  1. Well, good morning.

  2. So I was preparing for my message this week.

  3. I was thinking about some of the appointments that I've had over the last couple of weeks.

  4. As I've seen some of you come in and sit in my office and share with me the battles of your life.

  5. I've heard some of you share as your heart pours out the pain, the heartache, the confusion, and the weariness.

  6. Of your lives.

  7. You've confessed to me that there are times you feel like you have no strength to go on.

  8. There are times when you have wondered aloud why it has to be so hard.

  9. And you wonder where does help come from?

  10. Where can I look for help in the middle of my life that feels daily like a battle for life and not death?

  11. For good and not evil?

  12. Battles without and battles within.

  13. And where is the help?

  14. And how do we, where do we turn in those moments?

  15. It's in light of that question that we're going to dive into our chapter today.

  16. We're continuing in our series in Daniel.

  17. The book of Daniel, you can turn there in your pew Bible.

  18. We're going to be looking at Daniel 10, page 748.

  19. But as you turn there, I want to say this.

  20. I think Daniel would understand.

  21. As we come to chapter 10, Daniel is near the end of his life.

  22. He has been in exile for 70 years or so.

  23. It was 70 years ago when he as a teenager was taken away from his homeland and brought into the capital city of Babylon.

  24. And as we've read, he's seen remarkable things.

  25. He's seen God deliver him.

  26. He's seen kings change and come and go.

  27. He's seen even kingdoms rise and fall as the Babylonian Empire fell and the Persian Empire rose with Cyrus.

  28. And yet, I think he would understand.

  29. For his life has always been as an exile and as a slave.

  30. His life has always been hard.

  31. And certainly, as we see in this chapter, there are days when his strength completely failed him.

  32. It probably was even more profound for him than it might be for some of you who are younger and maybe have lived a few fewer years of life.

  33. Because he has lived this for 70 years.

  34. And now, he's on the brink of hopefully seeing something happen.

  35. If you remember the history, the Babylonian Empire came to an end at 539.

  36. Cyrus rose to power.

  37. And Cyrus gave this decree that you can read about in 2 Chronicles 36 that allowed the people of God who were in exile to go back to their homeland.

  38. To rebuild their city, Jerusalem, and their temple.

  39. To worship their God.

  40. And in this great decree, there was great hope.

  41. Suddenly, the hardness will end.

  42. Suddenly, the battle will end.

  43. Suddenly, we'll have peace and a restoration.

  44. And yet, if you've been here for the last couple of weeks, you know that what we've seen instead is that in the midst of all of that hope,

  45. Daniel has also been reminded by visions over and over again that it actually won't be easy.

  46. That in the short term, it will be harder.

  47. And that the battles will be fiercer.

  48. And that his life will be harder than he even imagined.

  49. We see as we look into this chapter in the first verse, we see that Daniel has a vision.

  50. But he has a vision not of peace and prosperity.

  51. Not of the lion laying down with the lamb and a land flowing with milk and honey.

  52. No, he has a vision.

  53. But it is a vision of great conflict.

  54. And he, I think, would ask the same question.

  55. Where do I find the strength to go on?

  56. Why does it have to be so hard?

  57. Where does my help come from?

  58. I think that Daniel will give us some hope in answering these questions today.

  59. We'll see that in this section, Daniel is, in this section from chapter 10 through 12, this is the last part of the book.

  60. It's one episode in three parts.

  61. Greg, next week, is going to talk about the content of the vision of great conflict.

  62. And he'll talk about the kings of the north and the south and all sorts of fun things,

  63. which he will do great with.

  64. So we're looking forward to that.

  65. But what we do see is that this is the last episode.

  66. And we see that God gives us a unique perspective into the battle that Daniel fought and that we fight in our lives as well.

  67. How the Lord will meet him.

  68. And how the Lord will strengthen him.

  69. So let's look at Daniel chapter 10.

    Daniel 10 chapter mention

  70. We're going to read it together.

  71. And then we're going to pray and we'll continue.

  72. In the third year of Cyrus, king of Persia, a word was revealed to Daniel, who was named Belshazzar.

  73. And the word was true and it was a great conflict.

  74. And he understood the word and he had understanding of the vision.

  75. In those days, I, Daniel, was mourning for three weeks.

  76. I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all for the full three weeks.

  77. On the 24th day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river that is the Tigris,

  78. I lifted up my eyes and looked.

  79. And behold, a man clothed in linen with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz came up around his waist.

  80. His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches,

  81. his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze.

  82. And the sound of his voice was like the sound of a multitude.

  83. And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision.

  84. For the men who were with me did not see the vision, but a great trembling fell upon them

  85. and they fled to hide themselves.

  86. So I was left alone and saw this great vision and no strength was left in me.

  87. My radiant appearance was fearfully changed and I retained no strength.

  88. Then I heard the sound of his words and as I heard the sound of his words,

  89. I fell on my face in deep sleep with my face to the ground.

  90. And behold, a hand touched me and sent me trembling on my hands and knees.

  91. And he said to me, oh, Daniel, man greatly loved, understand the words that I speak to you

  92. and stand upright for now I have been sent to you.

  93. And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling.

  94. Then he said to me, fear not, Daniel, for from this day that you set your heart to understand

  95. and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard and I have come because of your words.

  96. The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me 21 days.

  97. But Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me for I was left there with the kings of Persia

  98. and came to make you understand what is to happen to your people in the latter days.

  99. For the vision is for days yet to come.

  100. When he had spoken to me according to these words, I turned my face toward the ground and was mute.

  101. And behold, one in the likeness of the children of men touched my lips.

  102. Then I opened my mouth and I spoke.

  103. I said to him who stood before me, oh, my Lord, by reason of this vision, pains have come upon me

  104. and I retain no strength.

  105. How can my Lord's servant talk with my Lord?

  106. For now no strength remains in me and no breath is left in me.

  107. Again, one having the appearance of a man touched me and strengthened me.

  108. And he said, oh, man, greatly loved.

  109. Fear not.

  110. Peace be with you.

  111. Be strong and of good courage.

  112. And as he spoke to me, I was strengthened.

  113. And I said, and said, let my Lord speak for you have strengthened me.

  114. And then he said, do you know why I have come to you?

  115. But now I will return to fight against the prince of Persia.

  116. And when I go out, behold, the prince of Greece will come.

  117. But I tell you, but I will tell you what is inscribed in the book of truth.

  118. There is none who contends by my side against these except Michael, your prince.

  119. And as for me in the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to confirm and strengthen him.

  120. Did you get all that?

  121. Let's pray.

  122. Lord, thank you for this passage.

  123. Thank you for your word that you have given to us to reveal to us you and your world and your kingdom.

  124. Lord, help us as we seek to understand what you have to say to us this morning through this passage.

  125. Lord, open our eyes that we might see, Lord, the unseen reality of the spiritual world.

  126. Open our hearts that we might believe and hope in you as the one who rules over all.

  127. And Lord, may we find in the midst of this passage strength to carry on.

  128. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  129. Amen.

  130. Amen.

  131. So this is not a normal story.

  132. But I think that, in fact, it is a gift to us.

  133. Because I think that in it, God helps us see things that we don't often get to see very clearly.

  134. And that we often don't talk about in our modern world.

  135. We're going to see two things in this passage this morning.

  136. The first is that the battle that we are in is greater than we think.

  137. And the second thing we're going to see is that the help that we have is greater than we hope.

  138. So the battle is greater, but the hope is also greater.

  139. So first of all, let's just think through what this passage has to tell us about the battle that we are in.

  140. And it feels like what happens in this passage is that Daniel pulls back the curtain.

  141. Or God meets Daniel and pulls back the curtain for Daniel.

  142. And he's just passing it along to us.

  143. About what is going on in the world in a very profound way.

  144. Specifically, what he's pulling back and helping us see is that the spiritual reality in our world,

  145. just as much as the physical reality or the material reality of our world,

  146. both of these things are at play in our lives and in the very conflicts and the battles that we are facing every day.

  147. Now, Daniel was not ignorant of this.

  148. You see this in the opening couple of verses, starting in verse 2,

  149. because he was fasting and praying.

  150. He was already engaging in a battle for his people.

  151. Because the return from exile had begun.

  152. The remnant had started to go back to Jerusalem.

  153. And they had found it hard.

  154. And it seems to me that what Daniel was praying for is for help for his people.

  155. It might have been a help in light of his recognition of their sin,

  156. like the prayer in chapter 9 that Nick preached on last week.

  157. It might have been a prayer because Daniel knew that the return to exile wasn't going to be all peaches and roses,

  158. but it was going to be a hard road full of battle.

  159. And so he was praying for them for that.

  160. It might be that he was praying because though Persia had delivered God's people from the rule of the Babylonians,

  161. they had replaced the Babylonians as a ruling power over his people.

  162. And God's people continued to be under another rule in this physical world.

  163. We don't know exactly why Daniel was fasting and praying,

  164. but he was already engaging in this spiritual,

  165. in this intersection between the spiritual and the physical realm.

  166. But we see far more clearly in this chapter than many places in Scripture

  167. as God meets Daniel and pulls back that curtain.

  168. So he meets Daniel.

  169. In the midst of this fasting, he meets Daniel first of all in a vision.

  170. He has a vision of this man coming.

  171. It's a vision of a strong warrior.

  172. All of these images have to do with strength and power and judgment.

  173. And it's a vision of a strong warrior.

  174. And then you see further on as you keep going

  175. that this warrior or perhaps another,

  176. it's not completely clear whether we have one person,

  177. two people, or maybe even three people who meet with Daniel.

  178. But they're all heavenly beings and they all have the same function in his life.

  179. We see in 13 and 14,

  180. again,

  181. that there is a vision of,

  182. or that there is a message that comes along with this vision.

  183. This vision is not just something in Daniel's head,

  184. but there's suddenly someone there

  185. and they're speaking real words to him.

  186. They're actually physically touching him.

  187. And these heavenly beings are recounting what's going on in the spiritual realm.

  188. That there's a battle.

  189. That there are these powers at war.

  190. There's a battle between the power of those on God's side

  191. and what he describes the princes of Persia and Greece,

  192. or the kings of Persia and Greece.

  193. We see this in 13 and 14 and in verse 20 and following.

  194. We see that Michael is called your prince,

  195. meaning that in some way he was particularly protecting Daniel and God's people.

  196. We see that this battle is a fierce one

  197. where even angelic beings fighting on behalf of the Almighty need help.

  198. And so Michael helped this other person who may have been Gabriel,

  199. if you go back to chapter 9.

  200. That might be him, but we don't know.

  201. But that similarly you see in 11.1

  202. that this one who is talking to Daniel

  203. went and helped Michael, it seems.

  204. And that's what chapter 11 verse 1 is about.

  205. That he stood with Michael

  206. in the transition of power from the Babylonians to the Persians.

  207. This is kind of heady stuff.

  208. I'm sure you don't think about this on a daily basis.

  209. But we shouldn't be surprised by this.

  210. The Bible actually,

  211. if we read it with the eyes to see it,

  212. reminds us over and over and over and over again

  213. that in fact this is true,

  214. that the physical and the spiritual realities

  215. are both at work all the time.

  216. Think of Elisha

  217. and his servant

  218. when the king of Syria came

  219. against

  220. the king of Judah.

  221. Elisha

  222. when they were surrounded

  223. and had no hope

  224. and no army,

  225. Elisha prayed

  226. and said,

  227. God, open my servant's eyes

  228. because he was afraid.

  229. And in 2 Kings 6

  230. we see the story

  231. of how God opened his eyes

  232. and he saw

  233. that in fact

  234. there was a whole host

  235. of heavenly warriors

  236. ready to fight

  237. for God's people

  238. and to deliver them

  239. from that

  240. very physical army

  241. on the other side.

  242. We see the same thing

  243. when Snakarib

  244. brings his Assyrian army

  245. to the very gates

  246. of Jerusalem

  247. ready to sack

  248. the capital

  249. of God's people

  250. and take

  251. the holy city.

  252. And we see in 2 Chronicles 32

  253. that Hezekiah

  254. cries out to the Lord

  255. and the Lord

  256. sends an angel

  257. and suddenly

  258. the entire

  259. encircling army

  260. is gone.

  261. They turn back

  262. and they forsake

  263. the battlefield

  264. even though they had

  265. the upper hand

  266. and all the power

  267. in the world.

  268. The spiritual forces

  269. influence

  270. the physical

  271. geopolitical reality

  272. in those moments.

  273. Jesus

  274. reminds us of this

  275. in the Garden of Gethsemane

  276. when Peter

  277. pulls out his sword

  278. to defend him

  279. against the ones

  280. who had come

  281. to arrest him.

  282. And Jesus

  283. looks at him

  284. and says

  285. don't you know

  286. I have legions

  287. of angels

  288. I could snap

  289. my fingers

  290. and they would be

  291. here to deliver us

  292. but that's not

  293. the way

  294. that we're going

  295. to play this out

  296. because that's not

  297. what God is doing

  298. right now.

  299. But don't you know

  300. I could be delivered

  301. in an instant.

  302. We see it in the letters

  303. over and over again

  304. maybe one of the most

  305. profound ones

  306. is in 1 Peter 5

    1 Peter 5:8

  307. verse 8.

  308. Peter is writing

  309. to a group of Christians

  310. who are being persecuted

  311. within the context

  312. of the Roman Empire.

  313. Their persecution

  314. is real

  315. it is physical

  316. it is political

  317. and it is harsh.

  318. Describes it

  319. as a fiery trial.

  320. And yet

  321. Peter reminds them

  322. that they have

  323. an adversary

  324. the devil

  325. who prowls around

  326. like a roaring lion

  327. seeking to devour.

  328. And so we see

  329. throughout scripture

  330. that this picture

  331. that is being

  332. unveiled for us

  333. in the book of Daniel

    Daniel 10 chapter mention

  334. chapter 10

  335. that this is actually

  336. an ongoing reality.

  337. Let me

  338. take a side note

  339. for just a minute.

  340. There are some

  341. who have taken

  342. this picture

  343. of the intersection

  344. between spiritual

  345. and political

  346. or physical powers

  347. and made it

  348. a very specific

  349. ministry strategy

  350. and a very specific plan.

  351. They have called it

  352. spiritual mapping

  353. and identifying

  354. territorial powers.

  355. and friends

  356. I'll tell you

  357. that I think

  358. that there's not

  359. enough evidence

  360. in this chapter

  361. or in other parts

  362. of scripture

  363. to justify it

  364. with the kind

  365. of specificity

  366. that it is presented

  367. by some.

  368. There are some

  369. who think

  370. the only way

  371. that renewal

  372. revival

  373. or the kingdom

  374. of God

  375. will ever come

  376. is if we engage

  377. with specific knowledge

  378. about the specific

  379. spiritual powers

  380. that are oppressing

  381. specific places

  382. to set them free

  383. and that's the only way

  384. that we are going

  385. to do it.

  386. They identify this

  387. with the rulers

  388. the authorities

  389. and the cosmic powers

  390. of this present darkness

  391. in Ephesians 6

  392. and say

  393. we need to identify them

  394. and overcome them

  395. by prayer.

  396. Friends,

  397. let me say this.

  398. There may be

  399. some truth in it.

  400. I have lived

  401. in places

  402. where it seems

  403. that there are

  404. particular spiritual battles

  405. that people fight

  406. over and over

  407. and over again.

  408. New people

  409. who come in

  410. old people

  411. who have lived there

  412. for a long time

  413. they fight the same

  414. spiritual battles.

  415. So I don't want

  416. to discount it

  417. as being completely

  418. wacky or crazy

  419. because I don't think

  420. that it is

  421. at one level

  422. and yet I also think

  423. that we must not see

  424. that this is the strategy

  425. the missing strategy

  426. that's going to bring

  427. in God's kingdom.

  428. If it were

  429. God could have been

  430. far clearer

  431. in his word

  432. to help us know

  433. how to fight

  434. this battle.

  435. It may be helpful

  436. for us to pray

  437. about the spiritual

  438. influences

  439. and dynamics

  440. of the place

  441. that we live

  442. or the people

  443. that we're praying for

  444. but do you see

  445. that even when

  446. in a place

  447. like this

  448. where God

  449. was almost

  450. as clear

  451. as he could be

  452. about that

  453. possibility

  454. he didn't give

  455. a prescription

  456. Daniel therefore

  457. you need to fight

  458. the battle

  459. against Persia

  460. by praying

  461. in these particular

  462. ways against

  463. this demon.

  464. That's actually

  465. not what the passage

  466. says.

  467. The passage says

  468. there is a battle

  469. in the spiritual realm.

  470. It is real.

  471. you engage

  472. with it

  473. by prayer

  474. but you're

  475. not the one

  476. actually ultimately

  477. fighting that battle

  478. are you?

  479. It is not up

  480. to you

  481. or to me

  482. to bring in

  483. the kingdom

  484. by how we do

  485. this

  486. because ultimately

  487. the witness

  488. of scripture

  489. is that it's

  490. God who triumphs

  491. over those powers

  492. and principalities.

  493. In Colossians 2

  494. and in 1 Peter 3

  495. it is explicit

  496. that it is Christ

  497. and through his death

  498. and resurrection

  499. and his exaltation

  500. that he is now

  501. seated at the right

  502. hand of God

  503. and he has disarmed

  504. those rulers

  505. and powers

  506. and principalities.

  507. It is he

  508. who has done it

  509. not us.

  510. That's my little

  511. excursus on that.

  512. Let's go back

  513. to the passage.

  514. Think about

  515. how about you?

  516. How about you?

  517. Have you ever seen

  518. or experienced

  519. a time

  520. where God's

  521. pulled back

  522. the curtain

  523. and you've seen

  524. some kind of

  525. divine intervention

  526. that doesn't seem

  527. to have any

  528. physical reason

  529. or rationale?

  530. I was thinking

  531. about

  532. back in 1987

  533. I was a new

  534. Christian.

  535. I was on a

  536. missions trip

  537. to India.

  538. We had flown

  539. in

  540. to

  541. Delhi

  542. and

  543. had a

  544. tight

  545. series

  546. of

  547. connections

  548. to be able

  549. to get

  550. to the

  551. place

  552. that we

  553. were going

  554. in the

  555. middle

  556. of the

  557. country

  558. and

  559. arrived

  560. and the

  561. plane

  562. was

  563. gone.

  564. Cancelled.

  565. And if you've

  566. ever been in

  567. these situations

  568. you realize

  569. that you

  570. have no

  571. ability to

  572. engage with

  573. that

  574. helpfully.

  575. You are

  576. outside of

  577. your language

  578. you are

  579. outside of

  580. your culture

  581. you have

  582. it's 11

  583. o'clock

  584. at night

  585. you're bleary

  586. from a

  587. 14 hour

  588. plane ride

  589. and you're

  590. thinking

  591. what in

  592. the world

  593. and how

  594. do I

  595. do this?

  596. So our

  597. team sat

  598. down and we

  599. prayed

  600. God help

  601. us.

  602. And then our

  603. leader went

  604. and got in

  605. some line

  606. that he

  607. thought might

  608. be the right

  609. line to get

  610. some sort of

  611. information about

  612. how possibly to

  613. find a rebooked

  614. flight somewhere

  615. at some point

  616. and thinking about

  617. all the dominoes

  618. that needed to

  619. be reshuffled

  620. because of it.

  621. And behind

  622. him a man

  623. named George

  624. came up.

  625. And George

  626. became our

  627. guide through

  628. that process.

  629. He was a

  630. local, he

  631. was a

  632. Christian, but

  633. we wonder if

  634. he was also an

  635. angel.

  636. Again, I

  637. don't know.

  638. I have no

  639. idea.

  640. But it sure

  641. felt like God

  642. came to our

  643. aid in a

  644. very supernatural

  645. way, in a

  646. way that we

  647. could have no

  648. control over and

  649. has no reason

  650. to expect except

  651. that God

  652. intervened into

  653. our lives.

  654. How about

  655. you?

  656. Do you

  657. believe that your

  658. reality includes

  659. unseen spiritual

  660. forces at work?

  661. Do you think

  662. there's a

  663. connection between

  664. what goes on in

  665. your material

  666. physical world

  667. every day and

  668. the spiritual

  669. life?

  670. C.S.

  671. Lewis, in

  672. the opening of

  673. his great book,

  674. The Screwtape

  675. Letters, says

  676. this,

  677. there are two

  678. equal and

  679. opposite errors

  680. into which our

  681. race can fall

  682. about the

  683. devils.

  684. One is to

  685. disbelieve in

  686. their existence.

  687. The other is to

  688. believe and to

  689. feel an excessive

  690. and unhealthy

  691. interest in them.

  692. They themselves

  693. are equally

  694. pleased by both

  695. errors and

  696. hail a

  697. materialist or

  698. a magician

  699. with the same

  700. delight.

  701. Some of us

  702. may fall into

  703. the danger of

  704. seeing a demon

  705. behind every

  706. parking ticket

  707. and be constantly

  708. casting out demons

  709. from your broken

  710. down jalopy,

  711. your difficult

  712. workplace

  713. relationships,

  714. or your

  715. disobedient child.

  716. my guess is,

  717. here at

  718. Trinity,

  719. more of us

  720. would fall

  721. on the other

  722. side.

  723. Though we would

  724. never deny it in

  725. our formal

  726. theology, we

  727. practically live as

  728. if the only

  729. reality in our

  730. world is the

  731. material and the

  732. natural one,

  733. the measurable

  734. and the visible

  735. one.

  736. And just to make

  737. sure we balance

  738. this right,

  739. we know that

  740. there are three

  741. enemies of our

  742. soul in the

  743. world, right?

  744. The world, the

  745. flesh, and the

  746. devil.

  747. The world, meaning

  748. the world in

  749. rebellion, the

  750. patterns of the

  751. cultures and

  752. societies that we

  753. live in and the

  754. way that they lead

  755. us away from

  756. faith and trust in

  757. God.

  758. The flesh, the

  759. sinful nature that

  760. when we are apart

  761. from Christ, we are

  762. enslaved to and have

  763. no power over, and

  764. even when we are in

  765. Christ, how it

  766. continues to cling

  767. and to seek to

  768. exert its influence

  769. in our lives away

  770. from godliness and

  771. worship and love and

  772. trusting faith and

  773. persevering faith, and

  774. instead exerting

  775. itself in selfishness,

  776. in self-dependence,

  777. in disbelief.

  778. So we have the

  779. world and the

  780. flesh, but we also

  781. have the devil.

  782. that there are

  783. spiritual forces that

  784. are seeking to trip

  785. us up, that are

  786. seeking to push our

  787. buttons, that are

  788. seeking to influence

  789. us away from godly

  790. living and from a

  791. knowledge of Christ.

  792. What we're being

  793. encouraged to today is

  794. to see how real that

  795. is.

  796. Now look, we can't

  797. blame our sin on the

  798. devil, and we

  799. can't excuse the sin

  800. in our world by

  801. saying, well, that's

  802. what the devil does.

  803. We are meant to

  804. fight those battles

  805. and to be responsible

  806. for our own lives, and

  807. yet, we must recognize

  808. that there is this

  809. spiritual battle that

  810. is real, and there

  811. are spiritual forces that

  812. seek to influence us.

  813. Let me try to unpack

  814. this a little more for

  815. you so you can think

  816. about it.

  817. In your workplace, you

  818. have a boss who's

  819. taken a dislike to you,

  820. and despite every

  821. effort to work hard,

  822. every effort to

  823. understand his

  824. expectations and to

  825. fulfill them, every

  826. initiative to address

  827. unknown offenses, you've

  828. done every human thing

  829. you can to repair this

  830. relationship.

  831. Have you ever

  832. considered that there

  833. may be a spiritual force

  834. at work seeking to

  835. poison your workplace

  836. and your relationship?

  837. How about your last

  838. fight with your spouse?

  839. Yes, you were both

  840. tired and stressed, of

  841. course.

  842. Yes, it was the

  843. hundredth time you've

  844. talked about that thing,

  845. a hundredth time you

  846. failed to address it

  847. well.

  848. And even though you

  849. both wanted to be

  850. different, you find

  851. yourselves acting in

  852. ways that you hate.

  853. And even in the

  854. moment where you know

  855. you want to turn and be

  856. gracious towards one

  857. another, you end up

  858. attacking.

  859. Has it ever occurred to

  860. you that there's a

  861. spiritual influence in

  862. that interaction that you

  863. need to be aware of,

  864. that you need to know

  865. about?

  866. Parents, children,

  867. you've tried to be

  868. patient with one

  869. another and to be

  870. gracious.

  871. You've tried to

  872. respect boundaries,

  873. to follow through on

  874. discipline as parents.

  875. You've tried to trust

  876. and obey as a child.

  877. You've tried to build

  878. closeness and yet it

  879. feels like there's this

  880. impenetrable distance.

  881. Some might call it

  882. teenagerdom, but others

  883. would see it as a real

  884. problem, a real distance

  885. and distrust, even anger

  886. or hatred.

  887. You don't understand where

  888. it's coming from.

  889. You go through the list.

  890. Is it new friends at

  891. school?

  892. Is it puberty?

  893. Is it that we were bad

  894. parents?

  895. You wrestle through all of

  896. these things.

  897. Maybe can you acknowledge

  898. that there's a spiritual

  899. aspect to that as well?

  900. That there's a battle.

  901. That there are those who,

  902. that there are spiritual

  903. forces that are

  904. whispering lies,

  905. that are pushing

  906. ungodly agendas,

  907. that are fueling

  908. ungodly emotions

  909. in all of these things.

  910. Friends,

  911. let us recognize that

  912. even today in our

  913. political climate,

  914. in the midst of

  915. real disagreement,

  916. and in the midst of

  917. real issues that need

  918. to be addressed well,

  919. can we not see

  920. that violence

  921. and hatred

  922. and fear

  923. are the very things

  924. that the enemy of our

  925. soul

  926. take gleeful joy in?

  927. That these things,

  928. that there may be

  929. spiritual forces at work

  930. driving

  931. our country,

  932. yes,

  933. even our church,

  934. away from the kind

  935. of godly living

  936. as compassionate

  937. and righteous human

  938. beings in this world.

  939. That we may be tempted

  940. to fall into attitudes

  941. and actions

  942. that compromise

  943. the very gospel

  944. of grace

  945. that God has called us

  946. to believe

  947. and to proclaim.

  948. Let us not be unaware,

  949. brothers and sisters,

  950. let us not be unaware

  951. of these things.

  952. Daniel 10

  953. wants to remind us

  954. that the battle

  955. is fierce

  956. and the battle

  957. is real

  958. and it's not

  959. just physical

  960. and social

  961. and sociopolitical

  962. and geopolitical

  963. but it is spiritual

  964. as well.

  965. but the good news is

  966. this passage tells us

  967. not only is that true,

  968. not only are we

  969. to see our lives

  970. through this lens

  971. of this integrated

  972. vision of reality

  973. where spiritual

  974. and physical

  975. are not separate

  976. but are actually

  977. overlapping

  978. and intertwined

  979. but we see

  980. that the help

  981. and the hope

  982. that we have

  983. is greater as well

  984. because of that.

  985. Because look at

  986. what happens

  987. to Daniel

  988. in the midst

  989. of this passage

  990. where he is

  991. clearly weary,

  992. worn out.

  993. How many times

  994. as I read through

  995. does he say

  996. my strength failed me

  997. when he fell down

  998. into a deep sleep

  999. because he was

  1000. so overwhelmed,

  1001. when he turned

1002. his face to the ground

  1003. and was mute,

  1004. all of these things.

  1005. What did God do?

  1006. God sent him.

  1007. God sent him

  1008. his messengers.

  1009. His people,

  1010. his,

  1011. these spiritual beings

  1012. to come

1013. and what did they do

  1014. over and over again?

  1015. They reminded Daniel

1016. that he was not alone.

  1017. They reminded Daniel

  1018. that there were others

  1019. fighting for him.

  1020. They reminded Daniel

  1021. that in God

  1022. and with God's people

  1023. there can be strength

  1024. strength given,

  1025. strength found

  1026. for us to stand

  1027. and to not fall,

  1028. to continue to

  1029. in our,

  1030. in our battle

  1031. to find that there

  1032. is a help

1033. and a hope for us

  1034. that is good.

  1035. Just run back

  1036. through the passage

  1037. with me.

  1038. Look at verse 10.

  1039. As he has fallen,

  1040. prostrate,

  1041. because of this vision,

  1042. the angel touches him

  1043. and gets him

1044. to his hands and knees.

  1045. Isn't it encouraging

  1046. that it doesn't all

  1047. happen at once?

  1048. Because that's how

  1049. we feel, right?

  1050. We get touched

  1051. when we feel

  1052. God's presence

  1053. helping us.

  1054. We sometimes think,

  1055. well,

1056. why can't it just be easy

1057. and have it be overcome?

  1058. But instead,

  1059. Daniel gives us

  1060. a very realistic picture.

  1061. No,

  1062. that help was simply

1063. to get up off the ground

1064. onto his hands and knees,

  1065. trembling.

  1066. And then verse 11,

  1067. the touch came first,

  1068. then the words,

  1069. stand and be strong.

  1070. And these words

  1071. strengthened him,

  1072. so he stood up,

  1073. yet still trembling.

  1074. And that trembling

  1075. may have just been,

  1076. it's consistent

  1077. throughout scripture

  1078. that whenever we encounter

  1079. heavenly beings,

1080. we fall on our faces

  1081. and we're afraid.

  1082. It's the only thing

1083. that angels seem to say,

  1084. don't be afraid.

  1085. afraid.

1086. And he has to say it

  1087. all the time

  1088. because of course,

1089. every time we see one,

  1090. we're afraid.

  1091. But having said,

  1092. don't be afraid.

  1093. He touches him

  1094. to remind them,

  1095. you are not alone.

  1096. And then the words

  1097. that he speaks,

  1098. look in verse 11.

  1099. Oh man of God,

  1100. you are greatly loved.

1101. Isn't this an interesting thing?

  1102. He didn't come

  1103. and exhort him,

  1104. Daniel,

  1105. buck up.

  1106. Pull up your bootstraps.

  1107. You can do this.

  1108. What does he say?

  1109. He says,

  1110. you are dearly loved.

  1111. Have you ever thought

  1112. about that?

  1113. That the greatest power

  1114. that we have

  1115. in the battle,

  1116. in these spiritual battles,

  1117. is to know

1118. that there is a loving God

1119. who is fighting for us

1120. and who is with us.

  1121. That he has set

  1122. his love on us.

  1123. What an incredible thing.

  1124. Not only

  1125. does God remind him

1126. that he is deeply loved,

  1127. but he's also,

  1128. in verse 12,

  1129. he says,

  1130. you've not been ignored.

  1131. Your prayers

  1132. have been heard.

  1133. Your cries for help

  1134. have been heard.

  1135. Isn't that encouraging

  1136. when we feel

  1137. in the midst

  1138. of those times

  1139. when we just think,

  1140. God,

  1141. how can we ever

  1142. keep going?

  1143. where I don't have

  1144. the strength

  1145. to keep going,

  1146. to know

  1147. that God hears

  1148. our cries.

  1149. And in verse 19,

  1150. he expands the words

  1151. even more.

  1152. Fear not.

  1153. Peace be with you.

1154. And here he does say it.

  1155. Be strong

  1156. and of good courage.

  1157. And he goes on

  1158. to explain why.

  1159. Not,

1160. I'm going to give you

  1161. the victory.

  1162. Not,

  1163. these troubles

1164. are going to go away.

  1165. not,

  1166. why you're so afraid.

1167. If you weren't so afraid,

  1168. this wouldn't be

  1169. such a problem.

  1170. But he goes on

  1171. to say,

  1172. be strong

  1173. and of good courage

  1174. because I

  1175. have been fighting

  1176. for you

  1177. and I will continue

  1178. to be fighting

  1179. for you.

  1180. What a remarkable thing

  1181. that God sends

  1182. this kind of help.

  1183. Heavenly beings

  1184. to come

  1185. to meet with Daniel,

  1186. to touch him,

  1187. to speak words

  1188. to him

1189. so that he may be helped

1190. in his time of trouble.

  1191. How encouraging

1192. it might be for us

  1193. similarly

  1194. if we remember

  1195. how God

  1196. has sent

  1197. the greatest

  1198. spiritual being

  1199. to us

  1200. who says things like,

  1201. behold,

  1202. I am with you

  1203. to the ends

  1204. of the age.

  1205. Who says to us,

  1206. I will never

  1207. leave you

  1208. or forsake you.

  1209. Whose servants

  1210. write reminding us

  1211. that there is nothing

  1212. that can separate us

  1213. from the love

  1214. of God

  1215. in Jesus Christ

  1216. for his people.

  1217. The one who said

  1218. to his disciples

  1219. even while he walked

  1220. the earth,

  1221. I have said

  1222. these things to you

1223. that you might have peace.

  1224. In this world

  1225. you will have

  1226. tribulation.

  1227. but take heart.

  1228. I have overcome

  1229. the world.

  1230. Friends,

1231. this is the good news

  1232. of the gospel

  1233. for us

  1234. in the midst

  1235. of the spiritual battle

  1236. that we fight.

  1237. And this is

  1238. a remarkable thing

  1239. because at the end

  1240. of the day

  1241. it's not our battle.

  1242. Oh,

1243. we are to engage in it.

  1244. We see in Ephesians

1245. that we are to engage

  1246. in it

1247. but how do we engage

  1248. in it?

1249. We are to take hold

  1250. of all that God

  1251. has done for us

  1252. in Christ.

  1253. Putting on the armor

  1254. is simply to believe

  1255. and entrust in

  1256. the grace of God,

  1257. the truth of God,

  1258. the righteousness of God

  1259. that is expressed

  1260. most fully

  1261. in Christ.

  1262. For friends,

  1263. we know

  1264. that it is Christ

  1265. who ultimately

  1266. has won the victory.

  1267. When he came,

  1268. when he left heaven

  1269. and came to earth,

  1270. it was God's greatest

  1271. divine messenger,

  1272. God's greatest

  1273. divine being

  1274. because it was

  1275. his very self

  1276. coming and taking

  1277. on human form

  1278. and invading

  1279. this world

  1280. and as he went

  1281. to the cross,

  1282. the greatest battle

  1283. that has ever been

  1284. fought

  1285. in the spiritual realms

  1286. and in our world

  1287. was fought

  1288. and Jesus

  1289. defeated

  1290. sin and death

  1291. by,

  1292. not by conquering

  1293. and raising

  1294. an army

  1295. to sweep over

  1296. the powers

  1297. of the enemy,

  1298. but by offering

  1299. up his very

  1300. own life.

  1301. He achieved

  1302. victory

  1303. by loving

  1304. self-sacrifice

  1305. and having

  1306. risen from

  1307. the dead,

  1308. he defeated

  1309. sin

  1310. and death

  1311. and indeed

  1312. the power

  1313. of the devil

  1314. himself.

  1315. And friends,

  1316. we know,

  1317. we know this,

  1318. right?

  1319. This battle

  1320. is not over.

  1321. You know

  1322. the analogy,

  1323. we are between

  1324. in the spiritual realms,

  1325. in the sweep

  1326. of human history,

  1327. we are between

  1328. D-Day

  1329. when the decisive

  1330. battle has been won

  1331. and V-E-Day

  1332. when the victory

  1333. is complete.

1334. We know that we live

  1335. in this in-between time

  1336. of the now

  1337. and the not yet.

  1338. Jesus has disarmed

  1339. those powers

  1340. and rulers

  1341. and authorities

  1342. and yet they are

  1343. still at war

  1344. with us

  1345. in this world

  1346. and we are called

  1347. to stand firm

  1348. in the midst

  1349. of them.

  1350. And so we live

  1351. as exiles

  1352. and yes,

  1353. as warriors,

  1354. but not the warriors

1355. the way we so often

  1356. think.

  1357. We are warriors

  1358. who fight a battle

  1359. by following

  1360. in the footsteps

  1361. of the one

  1362. who has already

  1363. won the victory,

  1364. by being steadfast

  1365. in endurance,

  1366. by persevering

  1367. in faith,

  1368. by continuing

  1369. to love

  1370. our enemies

  1371. and to pray

  1372. for them,

  1373. to bless

  1374. and not curse.

  1375. We fight

  1376. this battle

  1377. in prayer,

  1378. calling upon God

  1379. that his kingdom

  1380. would come

  1381. and his will

  1382. would be done

  1383. on earth

  1384. as it is

  1385. in heaven.

  1386. But at the end

  1387. of the day,

  1388. we fight this battle

  1389. most clearly

  1390. by trusting

  1391. in him

  1392. who has won

  1393. the battle

  1394. and who will

  1395. one day return

  1396. and he will come

  1397. and if you want

  1398. to read Revelation

  1399. 12 through 14,

  1400. you can see

  1401. all the echoes

  1402. of the imagery

  1403. of Daniel in it

  1404. where we see

  1405. that these

  1406. spiritual forces

  1407. will one day

  1408. be overcome.

  1409. Where the warrior,

  1410. the great warrior,

  1411. Jesus,

  1412. will come

  1413. and like one

  1414. riding on a horse,

  1415. he will overthrow

  1416. the enemies forever

  1417. and he will restore

  1418. this land

  1419. by making it

  1420. a new heavens

  1421. and a new earth

  1422. and suddenly

  1423. the physical

  1424. and the spiritual

  1425. that feel so separate

  1426. to us sometimes

  1427. right now

  1428. will be brought together

  1429. and God's dwelling

1430. will be with his people

1431. and there will be peace

1432. and that is our hope.

  1433. That is the hope

  1434. of the gospel

  1435. in the midst

  1436. of this spiritual battle

  1437. that we face.

  1438. So friends,

1439. as you go home today

1440. and you have a spat

  1441. with your spouse

  1442. on the way home

  1443. or you fight

  1444. with your friend,

  1445. you go home

  1446. and realize

  1447. that you've got

  1448. a really difficult

  1449. workplace

1450. to go back to tomorrow,

  1451. you interact

  1452. with someone

  1453. who disagreed

  1454. with you

  1455. about the outcome

  1456. of the election,

  1457. whatever it is,

  1458. friends,

  1459. be aware

  1460. of the spiritual battle

  1461. and look to Christ

  1462. who has won it

  1463. for you.

  1464. Let's pray.

  1465. Oh Lord,

  1466. we need you.

  1467. We need you

  1468. to be our champion

  1469. and our warrior.

  1470. Lord,

  1471. to fight for us

1472. when we have no strength.

  1473. Lord,

1474. to come and remind us

  1475. of your presence

  1476. and of your love.

  1477. Lord,

1478. and that you are the one

1479. who will fight for us.

  1480. Lord,

  1481. that you,

1482. we need to be reminded,

  1483. Lord,

1484. that you will never let go

  1485. your people.

  1486. And Lord,

  1487. though this world

  1488. with devils filled

  1489. should threaten

  1490. to undo us,

  1491. Lord,

  1492. may we be those

  1493. who do not fear

  1494. because we know

  1495. that you,

  1496. God,

  1497. have won the victory

  1498. already

  1499. and that our lives

  1500. are in your hands

  1501. and that one day

  1502. we will rise

  1503. with you victorious

  1504. forever.

  1505. Help us,

  1506. Lord.

  1507. Help us,

  1508. Lord,

  1509. each day

  1510. to see

  1511. and to trust

  1512. in Jesus.

  1513. And Lord,

  1514. to fight

  1515. the good fight

  1516. of faith,

  1517. Lord,

  1518. under him.

  1519. And we pray this

  1520. in Jesus' name.

  1521. Amen.

  1522. Amen.

  1523. Amen.

  1524. Amen.

  1525. Amen.

  1526. Amen.

  1527. Amen.

  1528. Amen.

  1529. Amen.

  1530. Amen.

  1531. Amen.

  1532. Amen.

  1533. Amen.

  1534. Amen.

  1535. Amen.

  1536. Amen.

  1537. Amen.

  1538. Amen.

  1539. Amen.

  1540. Amen.
