  1. If you're looking at the few Bibles, that is page 856.

  2. In this Advent season, we're looking at four songs, which open up the Gospel of Luke.

  3. Last week we looked at Mary's song, the song of joyful praise.

  4. This week we'll look at Zacharias' song, the song of confident hope.

  5. Next week we'll look at the angel song, the song of good news.

  6. And on Christmas Day we'll look at Simeon's song of blessed peace.

  7. And in the way that Luke organizes Gospel and introduces Jesus to us,

  8. these are songs that prepare us for the arrival of Jesus.

  9. And then invite us to join in, to sing along in our hearts.

  10. As I said this morning, this song is focused on the theme of confident hope.

  11. Where does your hope and confidence come from in this holiday season?

  12. What are you waiting, anticipating, longing for?

  13. I've put Zacharias' song in context before I read it.

  14. The beginning of Luke chapter 1 tells about Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  15. For many years they have been waiting, longing, praying, particularly praying for a child.

  16. But they were now a older couple, yet they were childless.

  17. And yet one day, Zacharias was in the temple and the angel appears to him and says,

  18. God's going to give you and your wife a son.

  19. And Zacharias' initial response was, yeah right.

  20. We're past the age.

  21. This is not going to happen.

  22. And the angel says, well yes it will.

  23. And you'll be silent.

  24. You won't say anything until it does happen.

  25. So Zacharias is unable to speak until, and yet, the angel's promise comes true.

  26. Elizabeth gets pregnant.

  27. And verse 57, the time came for Elizabeth to give birth and she bore a son.

  28. And soon after he was born, a debate broke out as to what the child should be named.

  29. Should he be named Zacharias Jr.?

  30. Or should he be named John, as the angel had said?

  31. And Zacharias writes, his name is John.

  32. And then his mouth is opened.

  33. Verse 64 says, his mouth is opened, his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.

  34. And this is where he sings his song.

  35. So he's been waiting, longing, hoping for a long time.

  36. And yet now he has the hope of a new beginning.

  37. So today as we look at Zacharias' song, we'll see the source of our confident hope in this Christmas season as we look at this song.

  38. So Zacharias' song, starting at verse 67 of Luke chapter 1, let's read it together.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  39. His father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

  40. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,

  41. as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from a gold, that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.

  42. To show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our father Abraham,

  43. to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear.

  44. And all his glory will be opened all our days.

  45. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

  46. to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins.

  47. Because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high,

  48. to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

  49. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

  50. Well, this song is structured in two parts.

  51. Verse 68 to 75, as you may notice, they're in the past tense.

  52. They're talking about God in the third person, specifically talking about how God has been faithful to the promises he made in the past.

  53. And then verse 76 to 79 are in the future tense.

  54. Zachariah is speaking to his little baby son, John.

  55. Speaking about what God will do through him in the future.

  56. And so those are the two themes we're going to focus on today.

  57. God has been faithful to his promises in the past, number one.

  58. And two, because of that we can have confident hope as we look toward our future.

  59. So let's start by looking at the first theme.

  60. God has been faithful to his promises in the past.

  61. Now, if you have a bulletin, turn to the middle page of your bulletin.

  62. I've put in this insert to show how this first section, or how the song is arranged structurally.

  63. Because there's a sequence of seven words in this song that appear in one, as you see, visited, people, salvation, prophets, enemies, hand, fathers.

  64. And then they appear exactly in reverse order in the second half of the song.

  65. And so I don't think this is just a coincidence.

  66. I think this is an intentional part of how the song is structured, perhaps even a way for it to be remembered.

  67. And when you have this kind of structure, sometimes it's called a kai of them,

  68. most often the author is particularly trying to draw attention to what's right in the middle.

  69. Or what's right in the middle of the sandwich.

  70. Verse 72 and 73 says,

  71. He has shown the mercy promised to our fathers.

  72. He has remembered the oath that he swore to our father Abraham.

  73. In other words, God has been faithful to the promises that he made to our spiritual ancestors in the past.

  74. And I want to look a little bit at these seven words.

  75. Because I think these seven words that appear in this song, that each appear twice,

  76. they point back to a particular way that God had been faithful to the people of Israel in the past.

  77. Now the song mentions Abraham, and it mentions David.

  78. But these seven words all points back, I think most, more than anything else, to the story of the Exodus.

  79. Each of these seven words are key words when you think about the story of the Exodus.

  80. So first, God has visited his people.

  81. First two words.

  82. If you look at the end of the book of Genesis, Joseph's last words are,

  83. I am about to die, but God will visit you and bring you up out of this land,

  84. to the land that he swore, that he promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  85. Exodus chapter 4.

    Exodus 4 chapter mention

  86. The people believed when they heard that the Lord had visited the people of Israel,

  87. and he had seen their affliction.

  88. And God had visited not just one person here and another person there and somebody else over there,

  89. but he had visited his people.

  90. That is, God has come near to bless and save his people.

  91. Moses says to Pharaoh in Exodus, let my people go.

  92. Exodus 6-7, God promises, I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God.

  93. So we see that God had visited his people in the time of the Exodus and drawn near to them.

  94. But he hadn't just come close to them and sympathize with them in their state of bondage.

  95. He visits them to intervene, to rescue them from their helplessness, from their hopelessness.

  96. In other words, he brings salvation as announced through his prophets.

  97. Those are the next two words, salvation and prophets.

  98. Again, Exodus 14-13, when the people have come out of Egypt and when they're facing the Red Sea,

  99. Moses says to the people, fear not, stand firm, and you will see the salvation of the Lord.

  100. Exodus 15, after they've crossed the sea, the song of Moses,

  101. Moses says, the Lord is my strength and my song, he has become my salvation.

  102. And the salvation, God's work of salvation, delivering his people, has been announced by the prophets.

  103. In Exodus, God raised up Moses and Aaron to be prophets, to speak on his behalf, to represent him,

  104. to announce his authoritative word, to announce his acts of deliverance and judgment,

  105. to Pharaoh and to the Israelites.

  106. In fact, at the end of Deuteronomy, it says, there has never been another prophet since, like Moses.

  107. Right, so God visits his people, he announces his salvation through prophets,

  108. and the result is, people are delivered from the hand of their enemies.

  109. Those are the next two words.

  110. Again, book of Exodus, Exodus 3, verse 8, God says,

    Exodus 3:8

  111. I've come now to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

  112. Exodus 14, after the Red Sea, the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians.

  113. So Moses, your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, your right hand, O Lord,

  114. shatters the enemy.

  115. God intervened by his mighty hand to deliver his people from the hand of their enemies.

  116. And of course, all this was according to God's promise to their fathers, their ancestors,

  117. to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  118. That's what God says when he introduces himself to Moses in Exodus 3.

  119. I am the God of your father.

  120. The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.

  121. And Moses says, this is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him.

  122. So as you see, all seven of these words

  123. are key words in the story of God saving the people of Israel

  124. from slavery in Egypt and bringing them out to be his own people

  125. and to be delivered from the hands of their enemies,

  126. just as he had promised to their fathers.

  127. So that's the story that Zechariah's song would bring to mind,

  128. especially if you were hearing it in the historical context,

  129. the story of the Exodus.

  130. But notice this.

  131. Zechariah's not just looking back and saying,

  132. and reminiscing,

  133. about what happened 1,500 years ago.

  134. He's not just saying,

  135. oh, those were the glory days

  136. when God saved our people out of Egypt.

  137. Wasn't that a good thing,

  138. that he did so, so long ago?

  139. No.

  140. What is Zechariah responding to?

  141. He's responding to the birth of his son.

  142. But, just as the angel foretold,

  143. when it seemed like he and his wife had hit a wall,

  144. they were helpless and hopeless,

  145. when it seemed like they had no future,

  146. God intervened to do a new thing.

  147. And that's what Zechariah's responding to.

  148. Basically what Zechariah's saying is,

  149. God did it in the past,

  150. and he's now going to do it again.

  151. Just like God saved his people from slavery in Egypt,

  152. he came to visit them,

  153. he announced his salvation through the prophets,

  154. he came to deliver them from the hand of their enemies,

  155. all this is like,

  156. as he promised to our fathers,

  157. he's come to do it again.

  158. Now, Zechariah hadn't seen the complete fulfillment

  159. of God's plan yet, right?

  160. Jesus hadn't even yet been born.

  161. His son John was, it seems like,

  162. only eight days old at this point.

  163. And yet, Zechariah saw God has begun.

  164. God has begun to fulfill his plan.

  165. He's begun to carry out his salvation.

  166. And so in his mind,

  167. the work was as good as done.

  168. That's why he speaks in the past tense,

  169. even when he says,

  170. the Lord God of Israel has visited and redeemed his people,

  171. and has raised up a heart of salvation for us.

  172. Now, literally, right?

  173. Jesus hasn't even been born yet.

  174. Yes, and he certainly hasn't died on the cross

  175. and resurrected yet.

  176. So, in that sense,

  177. God hadn't yet redeemed his people.

  178. But Zechariah is saying,

  179. no, it's as good as done.

  180. God has promised it.

  181. He's begun his work.

  182. And because he's begun his work,

  183. he's going to complete what he's begun.

  184. And so I can speak with confidence

  185. about what God has promised,

  186. because he's going to carry it through completion.

  187. God had intervened

  188. in the midst of a seemingly hopeless situation.

  189. He had brought new life.

  190. And Zechariah is acknowledging here,

  191. God mercifully intervened,

  192. despite my initial unbelief.

  193. When the angel said to Zechariah in the temple,

  194. you're going to have a son,

  195. and he'll be great,

  196. and he'll be the prophet of the Most High,

  197. and Zechariah said,

  198. really?

  199. How in the world is that going to happen?

  200. And Zechariah's acknowledging here,

  201. God's intervened.

  202. God carried out his plan,

  203. despite my initial unbelief.

  204. You know, God doesn't always wait for us

  205. to believe in wholeheartedly

  206. before he intervenes in our lives

  207. for our good.

  208. He intervenes in his mercy

  209. so that we may come to believe

  210. and trust him more fully.

  211. and recognize him for who he really is.

  212. And that's why Zechariah rejoices.

  213. Because God has intervened.

  214. You know, maybe, maybe,

  215. I wonder how many of you can say,

  216. well, Zechariah,

  217. God intervened in my life

  218. despite my initial unbelief

  219. and or resistance.

  220. And now I do believe.

  221. Now I can sing this song

  222. of confidence and hope

  223. in the God who's faithful to his promises.

  224. Just take a moment,

  225. think about what the Lord has done

  226. in the past.

  227. Just think about your own life for a moment.

  228. Think about how it could

  229. broaden you to faith.

  230. Verse 69 mentions David.

  231. And David grew up

  232. as the son of Jesse,

  233. who was the son of Obed,

  234. who was the son of Boaz and Ruth.

  235. In other words,

  236. he grew up in a believing family

  237. with a godly heritage.

  238. Maybe you can identify with David.

  239. Maybe you can look back

  240. for generations

  241. in your family history.

  242. You can see God's faithfulness

  243. to your parents

  244. and your grandparents

  245. and your great-grandparents.

  246. Maybe you look back

  247. at your childhood

  248. and you can't remember a time

  249. when you didn't believe in Christ.

  250. God was there

  251. even before you knew it.

  252. He hasn't left you

  253. and He's kept you

  254. from leaving Him.

  255. Praise God.

  256. That's a wonderful testimony.

  257. But verse 73

  258. also mentions Abraham,

  259. another one of the fathers of Israel.

  260. And Abraham's story

  261. was very different.

  262. Abraham's parents

  263. and great-grandparents

  264. and great-grandparents

  265. worshipped idols.

  266. They didn't know God at all.

  267. God called Abraham

  268. out of the blue

  269. when he was 75 years old.

  270. To leave his homeland

  271. and followed him

  272. on a journey

  273. toward the promises of God.

  274. Abraham wasn't following

  275. a well-worn path.

  276. He was a trailblazer

  277. made to breaking new ground.

  278. Being led only

  279. by the Spirit

  280. and the Word

  281. and the providence of God.

  282. If you can identify

  283. with Abraham's story,

  284. God interrupted your life

  285. even when you weren't

  286. looking for Him.

  287. God called you

  288. into a new family in Christ

  289. even when you perhaps

  290. didn't have much

  291. of a family left.

  292. Or perhaps your family

  293. didn't understand that.

  294. Christ called you

  295. into a new way of life

  296. following Him.

  297. Perhaps some of the people

  298. that you hang around with

  299. or used to hang around with

  300. think that's a little strange.

  301. You might be one of the first

  302. in your family

  303. to follow Christ

  304. but now you have

  305. spiritual fathers and others.

  306. Abraham and Sarah,

  307. Moses and Mary,

  308. Boaz and Ruth,

  309. Mary and Joseph,

  310. Zechariah and Elizabeth.

  311. You know,

  312. that part of why the Bible

  313. is full of so many stories.

  314. So we can see

  315. how God has been faithful

  316. to His people in the past.

  317. People with all kinds

  318. of different backgrounds

  319. and all kinds of different

  320. pathways to faith

  321. and all kinds of different stories

  322. that led them to where they are

  323. and all kinds of different

  324. struggles and weaknesses

  325. and challenges.

  326. People who are both

  327. very different from us

  328. and very much like us.

  329. God has been faithful

  330. in the past.

  331. That's what He wants us to see.

  332. When we look at our own lives,

  333. when we look at others' lives

  334. around us,

  335. when we look at this church,

  336. when we look at the church worldwide,

  337. when we look at the story

  338. of the scriptures,

  339. we can see the ways

  340. that God has been faithful

  341. to His people in the past.

  342. That's the first thing you see.

  343. And the second thing

  344. we see in this song

  345. is that God will continue

  346. to be faithful in the future.

  347. That we can approach

  348. the future with confident hope

  349. in the promises of God.

  350. Look down again

  351. at the first half

  352. of this psalm.

  353. Verse 68 to 70

  354. speaks about what God has done.

  355. He's visited,

  356. redeemed His people,

  357. raised up to salvation

  358. just as He spoke

  359. by the prophets.

  360. And then verse 71

  361. begins with the word

  362. that we,

  363. or we can translate it,

  364. it must be translated,

  365. so that we.

  366. Pointing to the purpose

  367. of what God has done.

  368. so that we should be saved

  369. from our enemies

  370. and from the hand

  371. of all who hate us.

  372. Then verse 72 to 73

  373. goes back to what God has done.

  374. He has shown the mercy,

  375. promised to our fathers,

  376. He has remembered

  377. His holy covenant,

  378. the oath He swore to Abraham.

  379. And then a similar phrase,

  380. to grant us that we,

  381. beginning in verse 74.

  382. And then being delivered

  383. from the hand of our enemies,

  384. that's what He already said

  385. in verse 71.

  386. And then this comes

  387. to the climax

  388. of the first half

  389. of the psalm,

  390. that we might serve Him

  391. without fear.

  392. In holiness and righteousness

  393. all our days.

  394. You see how the first half

  395. of the psalm

  396. leads up to this

  397. great purpose

  398. of what God has done

  399. in intervening

  400. and visiting

  401. and redeeming His people.

  402. It's so that we would

  403. serve Him

  404. without fear

  405. all our days.

  406. You might wonder

  407. what are the enemies

  408. that Zechariah is talking about?

  409. It talks about being delivered

  410. from the hand of our enemies.

  411. Was He speaking about

  412. external oppression

  413. or internal division?

  414. Was He speaking about

  415. political enemies

  416. or spiritual enemies?

  417. Well,

  418. He doesn't specify.

  419. But I think in the context

  420. it seems to,

  421. the enemies seem to be

  422. anything that prevents us

  423. from serving God

  424. in holiness

  425. that is having a pure

  426. love for God

  427. and righteousness

  428. that is being faithful

  429. and just

  430. toward our fellow human beings

  431. and without fear.

  432. Alright,

  433. what prevents you

  434. from serving God

  435. wholeheartedly

  436. without fear?

  437. That's what Zechariah says

  438. Jesus Christ has come

  439. to deliver you

  440. from the hand

  441. of those enemies

  442. that,

  443. the things that prevent you

  444. from serving God

  445. without fear.

  446. And think about

  447. some of the fears

  448. that we experience.

  449. Fear is a very powerful thing.

  450. It motivates us

  451. in all kinds of ways.

  452. What are some of the fears

  453. that are competing

  454. for your heart

  455. this morning?

  456. is it the fear

  457. of being alone?

  458. The fear of being alone

  459. can drive people

  460. into unhealthy

  461. and codependent relationships.

  462. The fear of being alone

  463. can drive us

  464. to compulsive habits,

  465. to feel comfort,

  466. to feel companionship,

  467. even if it's from a thing

  468. and not a person.

  469. What about the fear

  470. of being known?

  471. The fear of becoming vulnerable?

  472. If you feel like

  473. if anyone really knew you,

  474. if you would really

  475. open up to them,

  476. that they will one day

  477. turn on you.

  478. For some of you,

  479. maybe that's a fear

  480. deeply reinforced

  481. by past experience.

  482. You've been rejected

  483. by people

  484. who were close to you.

  485. You've been gossiped

  486. about by people

  487. who you thought

  488. and said

  489. were your friends.

  490. You've been ignored

  491. though

  492. when you became

  493. no longer useful.

  494. So we can

  495. live by that fear.

  496. We can close ourselves off.

  497. That fear

  498. of being known

  499. and being vulnerable

  500. and being rejected

  501. and constrained.

  502. So perhaps

  503. it's a fear of opposition.

  504. So what the Israelites

  505. experienced

  506. when they

  507. had left Egypt,

  508. when God

  509. had intervened

  510. in their lives

  511. and saved them,

  512. they'd become his people

  513. but then they came

  514. to the Red Sea.

  515. In other words,

  516. they faced

  517. a seemingly

  518. insurmountable obstacle

  519. that was bigger

  520. than anything

  521. they had faced before.

  522. They had Pharaoh's army

  523. coming behind them

  524. and they had

  525. the big Red Sea

  526. with no way,

  527. no seemingly,

  528. no way

  529. to look in front of them.

  530. Have you felt that way?

  531. Do your life

  532. follow Christ?

  533. Yes,

  534. Christ has done

  535. something in the past.

  536. Yes,

  537. you've received

  538. his salvation

  539. but now you're

  540. facing something

  541. that's bigger

  542. than anything

  543. you've ever faced before.

  544. And you don't

  545. see a way forward

  546. and maybe like

  547. the Israelites

  548. you think,

  549. why don't I just,

  550. it'd be a lot easier

  551. just making you turn

  552. right now.

  553. Go back to Egypt,

  554. go back to my

  555. old way of life,

  556. go back to the way

  557. I used to deal

  558. with things.

  559. Fear can drive us

  560. into debilitating

  561. anxiety

  562. and paralyzing

  563. depression

  564. or it can drive us

  565. into a frenzy

  566. of anxious

  567. and panicked

  568. activity.

  569. Listen to these words.

  570. The Lord God

  571. has visited

  572. and redeemed

  573. his people.

  574. He's delivered us

  575. from the hand

  576. of our enemies

  577. that we might

  578. serve him

  579. without fear.

  580. without being

  581. controlled

  582. by our fears.

  583. Now it doesn't

  584. mean you will

  585. never feel fear,

  586. that's probably

  587. unrealistic

  588. for most of us

  589. to expect

  590. you will never

  591. feel fear,

  592. even very strong

  593. feelings of fear,

  594. but it's saying

  595. that

  596. by God's power

  597. that we might be

  598. unable to serve

  599. him and not be

  600. driven by our

  601. fears,

  602. but be led

  603. by the Holy Spirit

  604. and by faith

  605. in him.

  606. And it's not just

  607. sometimes,

  608. it's not just most

  609. of the time,

  610. but all our days.

  611. This is a promise

  612. for all our days,

  613. for every day

  614. of our life

  615. and every situation

  616. we find ourselves in.

  617. we may feel fear

  618. for all kinds

  619. of reasons,

  620. but we have a God

  621. whose power

  622. and mercy

  623. and faithfulness

  624. are bigger

  625. than all of our fears.

  626. And when we sing

  627. his praises,

  628. when we declare

  629. his faithfulness

  630. in the past

  631. and look back

  632. at how he's been

  633. faithful to me

  634. and to the people

  635. of my brothers

  636. and sisters in Christ

  637. and to our spiritual

  638. ancestors,

  639. those who have

  640. gone before us

  641. and finished the race

  642. and who are now

  643. at worshiping Jesus,

  644. we can serve him

  645. by faith

  646. instead of being

  647. driven by fear.

  648. We don't have to fear

  649. being alone

  650. because God has promised

  651. to be ever present

  652. with us,

  653. to never leave us

  654. nor forsake us.

  655. Jesus is a Savior

  656. who is interceding

  657. for us day by day,

  658. moment by moment,

  659. on our behalf.

  660. He is our advocate

  661. before God the Father

  662. in heaven.

  663. So you can sit all day

  664. by yourself

  665. and commune

  666. with God the Father

  667. and God the Son

  668. and God the Holy Spirit.

  669. You can have

  670. his Spirit abiding in you

  671. in the depths

  672. of your inner being,

  673. filling you with love

  674. and light

  675. and hope

  676. and joy.

  677. We don't have to fear

  678. becoming vulnerable

  679. and being known

  680. because you know

  681. how we have God

  682. who has made himself

  683. known

  684. and who made himself

  685. vulnerable to us.

  686. Jesus Christ knows

  687. what it's like

  688. to make himself

  689. vulnerable

  690. and then be rejected

  691. and slandered

  692. and betrayed

  693. and crucified.

  694. And that continues

  695. to happen to him

  696. every single day.

  697. Right?

  698. God's children

  699. say we love him

  700. and yet sometimes

  701. we ignore him

  702. and reject him.

  703. He can empathize

  704. with that

  705. more than anyone else.

  706. And yet despite

  707. our rejection of him

  708. he has opened himself

  709. to us

  710. that we might know him.

  711. That we might be

  712. known by him

  713. and be loved by him

  714. and know his grace.

  715. That he will not

  716. reject us.

  717. That he knows us already.

  718. That it was while

  719. we were yet sinners

  720. that he died for us.

  721. And we might begin

  722. to find our security

  723. in his acceptance

  724. of us by his grace.

  725. When we have

  726. that security

  727. in knowing

  728. who we are in Christ

  729. then we can use

  730. wisdom and discernment

  731. in opening ourselves

  732. up to others.

  733. It doesn't mean

  734. that we should

  735. open ourselves

  736. without restrictions

  737. to everyone and anyone.

  738. That's not wise.

  739. There are some people

  740. that you should not trust.

  741. And you should only

  742. trust God completely.

  743. But when we know

  744. the security

  745. of belonging to Christ

  746. and being known

  747. by him

  748. and being deeply loved

  749. eternally loved

  750. by him

  751. then we can

  752. gradually

  753. with wisdom

  754. and discernment

  755. open ourselves

  756. to be known

  757. by others.

  758. And to be vulnerable

  759. to our brothers

  760. and sisters in Christ

  761. because that's partly

  762. how God communicates

  763. his grace to us.

  764. By a physical person.

  765. And I think

  766. one of the most

  767. powerful things

  768. that Christians

  769. can do

  770. with one another

  771. is to confess

  772. our sins

  773. to one another

  774. and pray for one another.

  775. That's what

  776. James 5.16 says.

  777. Confess your sins

  778. to one another

  779. and pray for each other

  780. so that you may be healed.

  781. And when you open up

  782. to another

  783. brother or sister in Christ

  784. and say this is what

  785. I've been struggling with

  786. and here's where

  787. I've been falling

  788. and failing.

  789. And to have someone else

  790. come alongside

  791. and say if you confess

  792. that sin to the Lord

  793. why don't we speak

  794. to the Lord

  795. about that now.

  796. And you can pray

  797. and confess that

  798. to the Lord

  799. and then you can have

  800. another person say to you

  801. the Bible says

  802. 1 John 1.9

  803. that if we confess

  804. our sins

  805. God is faithful

  806. and just

  807. to forgive our sins

  808. and purify us

  809. from all unrighteousness.

  810. We can give each other

  811. that assurance

  812. that God has promised

  813. of his forgiveness

  814. and his grace.

  815. That's what we do

  816. when we gather

  817. every morning.

  818. Every Sunday morning

  819. we have a prayer

  820. of confession

  821. then we have songs

  822. about God's mercy

  823. and pardon

  824. and then we have

  825. that word of assurance

  826. that always comes

  827. right from the scriptures

  828. speaking to us

  829. about the forgiveness

  830. and the redemption

  831. and the assurance

  832. that we can have

  833. in Christ.

  834. We can do that

  835. one to one

  836. and encourage

  837. one another.

  838. We don't have to

  839. fear failure

  840. when we face

  841. seemingly insurmountable

  842. obstacles

  843. bigger than anything

  844. we've previously faced

  845. because our God

  846. is stronger

  847. and he can make

  848. a way forward

  849. even when there seems

  850. to be no way.

  851. Has he not done so

  852. in the past?

  853. Brothers and sisters

  854. we can look to the future

  855. without fear

  856. but with confident hope

  857. in the promises of God.

  858. And that's what we see

  859. in verse 76 to 79

  860. Zachariah as it were

  861. turns to his

  862. eight day old son

  863. and speaks directly

  864. to him.

  865. And you child

  866. will be called

  867. the prophet of the most high

  868. for you will go

  869. before the Lord

  870. to prepare his ways

  871. to give knowledge

  872. of salvation

  873. to his people

  874. and the forgiveness

  875. of their sins

  876. because of the tender

  877. mercy of our God

  878. whereby the sunrise

  879. shall visit us

  880. from on high

  881. to give light

  882. to those who sit

  883. in darkness

  884. and in the shadow

  885. of death

  886. and to guide our feet

  887. into the way of peace.

  888. Zachariah's vision

  889. is that a new day

  890. is dawning.

  891. The sunrise

  892. shall visit us.

  893. It's a vision

  894. of a new start

  895. for God's people

  896. knowledge of salvation

  897. and his assurance

  898. of salvation

  899. and the forgiveness

  900. of their sins.

  901. This is good news.

  902. This is the good news

  903. that the apostle Paul

  904. proclaimed throughout

  905. the world.

  906. He said,

  907. through Jesus

  908. the forgiveness of sins

  909. is proclaimed to you

  910. through him.

  911. Everyone who believes

  912. is set free

  913. from every sin

  914. of justification

  915. you were not able

  916. to obtain

  917. under the law

  918. of Moses

  919. or anywhere else.

  920. And the apostle John

  921. later writes,

  922. I am writing to you

  923. dear children

  924. because your sins

  925. have been forgiven

  926. on account of his name.

  927. Have you received

  928. that assurance

  929. of salvation,

  930. the forgiveness

  931. of your sins

  932. through Jesus Christ?

  933. Or do you still live

  934. under the burden

  935. of guilt

  936. and fear

  937. of condemnation?

  938. It's perhaps

  939. one of the most

  940. powerful fears of all.

  941. The good news

  942. is that in Jesus Christ

  943. God has come

  944. to release us

  945. from the burden

  946. of guilt

  947. and fear

  948. of condemnation.

  949. That we might have

  950. knowledge of salvation

  951. and the forgiveness

  952. of our sins.

  953. This is the reason

  954. why Jesus Christ

  955. came into the world.

  956. So turn to him today

  957. if you haven't already.

  958. Ask him for it.

  959. Acknowledge that you

  960. are a sinner

  961. and that you need

  962. his grace

  963. and receive his promise

  964. of forgiveness.

  965. And if you've done that,

  966. know that his promise

  967. is for you.

  968. Don't live like

  969. it's not true.

  970. It's a true promise.

  971. And God is faithful

  972. to his promises.

  973. This is the message

  974. that Zechariah's son

  975. John will proclaim.

  976. Repentance,

  977. a baptism of repentance

  978. for the forgiveness

  979. of sins.

  980. Now John's role

  981. was unique.

  982. It was to prepare

  983. the way for Jesus

  984. as a prophet.

  985. And yet in some ways

  986. the pattern of his life

  987. is also the pattern

  988. that we are called to

  989. in some ways.

  990. His calling is not

  991. to be great

  992. for his own sake

  993. but to point

  994. to a greater one

  995. who was to come.

  996. And if you look at

  997. Luke chapters 1 and 2

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  998. as a whole,

  999. it's the story of

1000. the birth of John the Baptist

1001. and the birth of Jesus

  1002. and they're woven together

  1003. but in the way

  1004. they're woven together

  1005. you can see

  1006. that John is meant

  1007. to point us

  1008. toward Jesus.

  1009. Right?

  1010. If you look at

1011. the beginning of chapter 1

  1012. verse 5 to 25

  1013. John's birth is announced

  1014. in advance

  1015. he will be great

  1016. before the Lord.

  1017. And then

  1018. verse 26 to 38

  1019. Jesus' birth is announced

  1020. to Mary

  1021. he will be great

  1022. and will be called

1023. the Son of the Most High.

  1024. He will reign forever

  1025. and of his kingdom

1026. there shall be no end.

  1027. You see Jesus

  1028. will be even greater.

  1029. And then we have

  1030. 57 to 66

  1031. the birth

  1032. and circumcision

  1033. and naming of John

  1034. with relatives

  1035. and neighbors rejoicing

  1036. followed by

  1037. Zacharias' prophecy.

  1038. But then chapter 2

  1039. the birth

  1040. and circumcision

  1041. and naming of Jesus

  1042. chapter 2

  1043. verse 1 to 21

  1044. with not just

  1045. neighbors

  1046. and friends rejoicing

  1047. but angels.

  1048. The armies of heaven

  1049. are rejoicing

  1050. because God's peace

  1051. has come to earth.

  1052. Simeon and Anna

  1053. greet Jesus

  1054. with words of prophecy.

  1055. Chapter 1 verse 80

  1056. says John

  1057. grew and became

  1058. strong in spirit.

1059. But then in chapter 2

  1060. verse 40

  1061. and 52

  1062. it says Jesus

  1063. not only grew

  1064. but became strong

1065. but he was full of wisdom

1066. and the favor of God

  1067. was upon him.

  1068. See if you look

  1069. at these two chapters

  1070. God's doing a great thing

1071. in the birth of John

  1072. the Baptist

  1073. but he's doing

  1074. even a greater thing

1075. in the life of Jesus.

  1076. That's who he's meant

  1077. to point to.

  1078. John the forerunner

1079. would point to the light

1080. but Jesus would be the light.

  1081. John would proclaim

  1082. forgiveness of sins.

  1083. Jesus would purchase

  1084. forgiveness of sins.

1085. John would prepare the way

  1086. but Jesus would say

  1087. I am the way

  1088. and the truth

  1089. and the life.

1090. This is what we're called

  1091. to do

  1092. as believers in Christ

1093. is to have our lives

  1094. point to

  1095. the greatness

  1096. the all surpassing

  1097. greatness of Jesus Christ

1098. the light of the world

1099. the hope of the nations.

  1100. John's life

  1101. wasn't an easy one.

  1102. Zachariah was speaking

  1103. with confident hope

  1104. about his

  1105. new child

  1106. well that child

  1107. would grow up

1108. to live in the wilderness

  1109. not the easiest place

  1110. to live.

1111. He was a bit strange

  1112. but Dr. Mark says

  1113. that he ate

  1114. focused and wild honey

  1115. not sure that

  1116. that's in the parents

  1117. ambition

  1118. for their children's diet

  1119. the one

  1120. little odd.

  1121. John would later

  1122. be thrown in prison

  1123. for speaking the truth

  1124. to King Herod

1125. and while he was in prison

  1126. John would have doubts

  1127. about Jesus

  1128. he would send messengers

  1129. in Luke 7

1130. saying are you the one

  1131. who is to come

  1132. or should we look

  1133. for another?

  1134. And then eventually

  1135. John would be beheaded

  1136. by King Herod.

  1137. John didn't live

  1138. an easy

  1139. or comfortable

  1140. or prosperous

  1141. life

  1142. and yet Zachariah

  1143. was happy

  1144. at the birth

  1145. of his son

  1146. not because

  1147. John's life

  1148. was promised

  1149. to be smooth

  1150. and comfortable

  1151. and easy

  1152. but because

  1153. John's life

  1154. could point

  1155. faithfully

  1156. to the light

  1157. of the world

  1158. to the coming

  1159. King

  1160. to the great

  1161. Redeemer

  1162. to the Savior

  1163. so as we look

  1164. as we think

  1165. what does it mean

  1166. to look toward

  1167. the future

  1168. with confident hope

  1169. it doesn't just

  1170. mean wishing

  1171. and hoping

  1172. that our life

  1173. is going to be

  1174. easy and smooth

  1175. and comfortable

  1176. God never promises

  1177. that

  1178. but it means

  1179. that by his grace

  1180. our lives

  1181. can point

  1182. to the light

  1183. of the world

  1184. our lives

  1185. can be rooted

  1186. in the tender

  1187. mercy of our God

  1188. verse 78

  1189. it says

  1190. that all this

  1191. John being raised

  1192. up as a prophet

  1193. salvation

  1194. and forgiveness

  1195. of sins

  1196. it's all because

  1197. of the tender

  1198. mercy

  1199. of our God

  1200. that phrase

  1201. is

  1202. that we're tender

  1203. it's a word

  1204. that means

  1205. deeply felt

  1206. compassion

  1207. it's a word

  1208. that's used

  1209. sometimes to talk

  1210. about

  1211. your guts

  1212. that really

  1213. down

  1214. deep

  1215. feeling

  1216. saying

  1217. this word

  1218. of salvation

  1219. that God

  1220. has promised

  1221. the light

  1222. of the world

  1223. dawning upon us

  1224. it's all because

  1225. of the deeply

  1226. felt compassion

  1227. compassionate

  1228. mercy

  1229. of our God

  1230. that's what we

  1231. can be confident

  1232. in

  1233. that's what we

  1234. can be confident

  1235. in

  1236. that's what can

  1237. sustain us

  1238. above all else

  1239. is the

  1240. compassionate

  1241. mercy

  1242. of our God

  1243. God's been

  1244. faithful to his

  1245. promises in the

  1246. past

  1247. so we can look

  1248. to the future

  1249. with confidence

  1250. in them

  1251. let's pray

  1252. Father we thank you

  1253. for Zachariah's song

  1254. we thank you

  1255. Lord

  1256. that you

  1257. gave him

  1258. Lord not just

  1259. words to speak

  1260. but a song

  1261. to sing

  1262. we pray that

  1263. this song

  1264. would come to

  1265. resonate in our

  1266. hearts

  1267. Lord that we

  1268. would look

  1269. back

  1270. at the

  1271. faithfulness

  1272. that you

  1273. have shown

  1274. to your people

  1275. in the past

  1276. to Abraham

  1277. and Moses

  1278. and David

  1279. Zachariah

  1280. and Elizabeth

  1281. Mary

  1282. and Joseph

  1283. or that we

  1284. would look

  1285. back

  1286. at the past

  1287. that your

  1288. faithfulness

  1289. that that

  1290. would enable

  1291. us to look

  1292. towards our

  1293. future with

  1294. confidence

  1295. and with

  1296. hope

  1297. and we

  1298. pray Lord

  1299. that like

  1300. John the

  1301. Baptist

  1302. you would

  1303. make us

  1304. people who

  1305. point

  1306. to the

  1307. light of

  1308. the world

  1309. make us

  1310. people who

  1311. shine with

  1312. the light

  1313. that you

  1314. have given

  1315. to us

  1316. Lord we

  1317. pray that

  1318. you would

  1319. draw near

  1320. to us

  1321. in our

  1322. fears

  1323. draw near

  1324. to us

  1325. in our

  1326. loneliness

  1327. in places

  1328. where we

  1329. feel the

  1330. lack of

  1331. hope

  1332. we pray

  1333. that you

  1334. would

  1335. shine your

  1336. light upon

  1337. us

  1338. Lord that

  1339. we might

  1340. walk on

  1341. the paths

  1342. of peace

  1343. and that

  1344. we might

  1345. be filled

  1346. with your

  1347. spirit

  1348. with hope

  1349. and joy

  1350. believing in

  1351. you

  1352. we pray

  1353. this in

  1354. Jesus name

  1355. amen
