  1. Well, let me again say Happy New Year, church.

  2. It's good to be with you all this morning.

  3. We are looking this morning at the Gospel of John,

    John 2:1–11

  4. chapter 2, verses 1 through 11.

  5. This coming spring, we're going to do a series in the Gospel of Luke

  6. in the early part of Jesus' ministry.

  7. But for the next couple of weeks, we're just going to take just a couple of weeks

  8. and look at some various texts together before we dive into that series.

  9. So this morning, we're going to be in the Gospel of John,

    John 2:1–11

  10. chapter 2, verses 1 through 11.

  11. That's page 887 in the Pew Bible, if you want to turn there with me.

  12. Gospel of John, chapter 2.

    John 2 chapter mention

  13. All right, let me read this text for us.

  14. John writes this.

  15. He says,

  16. On the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee,

  17. and the mother of Jesus was there.

  18. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

  19. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him,

  20. They have no wine.

  21. And Jesus said to her,

  22. Woman, what does this have to do with me?

  23. My hour has not yet come.

  24. His mother said to the servants,

  25. Do whatever he tells you.

  26. Now, there were six stone water jars there

  27. for the Jewish rites of purification,

  28. each holding 20 or 30 gallons.

  29. Jesus said to the servants,

  30. Fill the jars with water.

  31. And they filled them up to the brim.

  32. And he said to them,

  33. Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.

  34. So they took it.

  35. When the master of the feast tasted the water,

  36. now become wine,

  37. and did not know where it came from,

  38. though the servants who had drawn the water knew,

  39. the master of the feast called the bridegroom

  40. and said to him,

  41. Everyone serves the good wine first.

  42. And when people have drunk freely,

  43. then the poor wine.

  44. But you have kept the good wine until now.

  45. This, the first of his signs,

  46. Jesus did at Canaan and Galilee

  47. and manifested his glory.

  48. And the disciples believed in him.

  49. Let's pray together.

  50. Father, we ask that this morning,

  51. as we attend now to your word,

  52. Father, that your living word,

  53. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  54. would come and be present to us

  55. and speak to us by your Holy Spirit.

  56. Lord, as we put ourselves under your word,

  57. we pray that you would raise us up by your spirit

  58. to hear and see and know

  59. and to taste that you are good.

  60. Lord, would we come to understand you

  61. and love you and know you more fully this morning

  62. as a result of this time together

  63. around your word.

  64. God, we ask that our time spent here this morning

  65. would bring much praise and much honor

  66. and much glory to you,

  67. our great and loving King.

  68. We ask this in his name.

  69. Amen.

  70. Well, it's the start of another year, isn't it?

  71. Hard to believe.

  72. 2017, how many months is it going to take you

  73. to write the right date on your checks?

  74. Oh, wait, we don't write checks anymore,

  75. so forget about that.

  76. Our cell phone just does it all for us, right?

  77. But I think this is a good time of year, isn't it,

  78. to recalibrate and to realign ourselves

  79. with what's really important,

  80. both as individuals and as a church.

  81. And as I thought about a text

  82. that would help us do that this morning,

  83. this is the text that came to mind.

  84. Because I think that this is a text

  85. that helps us to see in a really vivid way,

  86. as John says at the end of our text in verse 11,

  87. it helps us to see in a vivid way

  88. the glory of Jesus.

  89. This, the first of his signs, John writes,

  90. Jesus did at Cana in Galilee

  91. and manifested his glory.

  92. After all, what is really important?

  93. What is worth building your life

  94. and reorienting your life around?

  95. What ought we as Christians, as a church,

  96. constantly be recalibrating

  97. and reorienting ourselves around?

  98. If we are listening to God's revelation in scripture,

  99. that thing above all else

  100. is the glory of Jesus.

  101. If you think about it,

  102. most of us are hunting and searching for glory,

  103. aren't we?

  104. For something beautiful and awe-inspiring.

  105. In other words, we're looking for something

  106. that's worthy,

  107. worthy of giving our lives to,

  108. worthy of our time and our efforts

  109. and our dreams and our energies,

  110. aren't we?

  111. I think in our worst moments as human beings,

  112. we're hunting for our own glory.

  113. We want ourselves to be great.

  114. But thankfully, by God's common grace,

  115. we're often not as bad as we could be.

  116. And in those not as bad moments,

  117. rather than wanting ourselves to be great,

  118. we want to be a part of something great.

  119. We want to live for something or someone

  120. that is truly worthy.

  121. But it's so easy to go after the wrong thing.

  122. Even as Christians, even as a church,

  123. we often get caught up in secondary things

  124. and lose sight of the main thing.

  125. But John's entire gospel

  126. that we're just dipping into this morning

  127. is written to show us

  128. that this desire for glory within all of us

  129. is really meant to find its object,

  130. its goal, its satisfaction

  131. in the one who is glorious in Jesus.

  132. The word of God who became flesh

  133. so that we might see the glory of God.

  134. And by believing in him,

  135. we might become the children of God.

  136. That is, we might become partakers of that glory.

  137. So here then, as we begin another year,

  138. I think there are three things in this text

  139. that can help reorient us back to the center,

  140. back to the main thing.

  141. Back not just to an idea or a program

  142. or a set of resolutions,

  143. but back to a person,

  144. back to Jesus himself

  145. and to his glory.

  146. The one who is truly worth actually living for.

  147. So let's look first at what we see here.

  148. First, we see here

  149. the glory of the power of Jesus.

  150. Don't we?

  151. I mean, at the most basic level,

  152. this text is about Jesus

  153. doing something extraordinary, isn't it?

  154. He literally turns water into wine.

  155. Now this event in the life of Jesus

  156. is so familiar to so many of us

  157. that we can lose sight

  158. of how extraordinary it actually is.

  159. How many children's Bibles

  160. have this story in it?

  161. We're so familiar with it

  162. and yet, it's incredible.

  163. Look again at verses 6, 7, and 8.

  164. Look down there in the text again

  165. at 6, 7, and 8

  166. where this miracle happens

  167. and notice what Jesus doesn't do there.

  168. There's no big production, is there?

  169. He doesn't wave his hands over the water

  170. and say something really profound

  171. and powerful, right?

  172. He doesn't sort of gather everyone around

  173. to watch him work.

  174. He doesn't say, stop the feast.

  175. Something big's gonna happen right here.

  176. You know?

  177. He doesn't tell the disciples

  178. to cue the music

  179. and fire up the smoke machine.

  180. You know?

  181. The final countdown, here we go.

  182. Because the magic's about to happen.

  183. None of that.

  184. In fact, John narrates this story

  185. so beautifully, so subtly, doesn't he?

  186. Look again.

  187. Where in this story

  188. does the miracle actually happen?

  189. In verse 9, John tells us

  190. that the master of the feast

  191. tasted the water,

  192. now become wine.

  193. But by that point in the story,

  194. by the point in the story

  195. where John actually says

  196. that the water had become wine,

  197. the miracle's already happened.

  198. At some point between the servants

  199. filling the jars to the brim

  200. and Jesus saying,

  201. now draw some out,

  202. Jesus had already done the impossible.

  203. Just like that.

  204. Perhaps with that simple word,

  205. now.

  206. Now draw some out, Jesus says.

  207. And with that simple word,

  208. this everyday substance,

  209. this water,

  210. has been changed forever.

  211. Imagine yourself at the gym.

  212. Come on.

  213. It's New Year's Day.

  214. I'm sure I'm not the only one

  215. who's been thinking about

  216. my need to get to the gym, right?

  217. So imagine yourself at the gym.

  218. And there are two people there

  219. lifting weights.

  220. First one comes up,

  221. grabs the bar,

  222. stares into the mirror.

  223. Why do people always lift weights

  224. looking in a mirror?

  225. I don't get it.

  226. You can tell I don't go to the gym a lot.

  227. Grabs the bar,

  228. and with a good deal of grunting

  229. and groaning and this noise,

  230. sts, sts, sts,

  231. why do they do that too?

  232. With a solid yell,

  233. they lift the bar above their head.

  234. Not bad.

  235. But then another steps up,

  236. and without a sound,

  237. without seemingly any effort,

  238. lifts the bar aloft

  239. and puts it down again.

  240. And of course,

  241. in that moment,

  242. we know who has the greater strength,

  243. don't we?

  244. Not the one who is grunting and groaning,

  245. but the one who can do it

  246. without the slightest sign of exertion.

  247. And is that not Jesus here?

  248. And yet he's doing something more

  249. than lifting a barbell,

  250. isn't he?

  251. He's altering something

  252. in the created order

  253. at its very root

  254. and bringing it into newness.

  255. Water becomes wine.

  256. And as his ministry continues

  257. in the Gospel of John,

  258. this is just the beginning.

  259. This is just the first,

  260. this is just the beginning

  261. of his signs,

  262. John will say.

  263. In chapter four,

  264. an official son will be healed

  265. with just a word.

  266. In chapter six,

  267. 5,000 people will be fed

  268. with just one small meal.

  269. In chapter nine,

  270. a man who's been blind since birth

  271. will see again

  272. with just a little wash

  273. in the city pool.

  274. And in chapter 11,

  275. with a simple prayer

  276. and a command,

  277. a dead man will walk out

  278. of his own tomb.

  279. So who is this Jesus?

  280. Who is this one

  281. who has such power

  282. to overcome sickness

  283. and hunger

  284. and blindness

  285. and even death itself?

  286. The earliest followers of Jesus

  287. all came to one conclusion.

  288. That in Jesus,

  289. God himself,

  290. the creator God himself

  291. had come.

  292. Here's how John explains it

  293. in the opening chapter

  294. of his gospel.

  295. In the beginning was the word

  296. and the word was with God

  297. and the word was God.

  298. He was in the beginning with God

  299. and all things were made

  300. through him

  301. and without him

  302. was not anything made

  303. that was made.

  304. And then he goes on to say,

  305. and that word became flesh

  306. and dwelt among us

  307. and we have seen his glory.

  308. Glory is of the only son

  309. from the father

  310. full of grace and truth.

  311. This is who Jesus is.

  312. The word of God,

  313. the son of God,

  314. the second person

  315. of the Trinity

  316. become flesh

  317. and dwelling among us.

  318. Almighty in power.

  319. And that helps to explain

  320. Jesus' interaction with Mary

  321. in these opening verses,

  322. I think.

  323. Mary tells Jesus

  324. that they've run out of wine.

  325. And how does Jesus respond?

  326. Well, surprisingly,

  327. he responds with a gentle

  328. but firm rebuke.

  329. Woman,

  330. what does this have to do

  331. with me?

  332. Not exactly how you think

  333. Jesus would respond

  334. to his own mother, right?

  335. Now, the word woman there

  336. sounds really harsh,

  337. doesn't it?

  338. If I were to walk up

  339. to someone and say,

  340. woman,

  341. da-da-da-da-da-da-da,

  342. you would think,

  343. whoa,

  344. where's that guy get off?

  345. No, well, okay.

  346. But in the historical context,

  347. that particular word

  348. in this particular context

  349. would have actually been

  350. a quite respectful way

  351. for Jesus to reply to Mary.

  352. In fact,

  353. that same sort of expression

  354. can even be used

  355. with some warmth

  356. and some affection

  357. in certain contexts.

  358. That's the same way

  359. Jesus will address his mother

  360. at the end of his life

  361. at the cross

  362. when he's sort of making sure

  363. that Mary's taken care of

  364. by John.

  365. So Jesus is being respectful.

  366. He's being caring here.

  367. But in the rest of his reply,

  368. Jesus is telling Mary what?

  369. He's telling Mary

  370. in no uncertain terms

  371. that she or anyone else

  372. can dictate the terms

  373. or the times of his ministry.

  374. He is telling her

  375. that his ministry

  376. will be utterly free

  377. from any kind of human advice

  378. or agenda or manipulation.

  379. Not even Jesus' own earthly mother

  380. has an inside track

  381. to get Jesus to do something

  382. on her timetable.

  383. You see?

  384. This almighty Lord Jesus

  385. isn't something

  386. that we can control.

  387. Isn't someone

  388. that we can control

  389. or even someone

  390. we can advise.

  391. Mary wants Jesus to act

  392. but Jesus is clear

  393. that he will work

  394. in his own time

  395. and in his own way.

  396. Rather,

  397. the lesson here

  398. is that we should respond

  399. the way Mary responds

  400. and how she advises

  401. the servants to respond

  402. in verse 5.

  403. Do whatever he tells you.

  404. That is the right response

  405. to this almighty Jesus.

  406. He's not someone

  407. that we could ever

  408. possibly control

  409. but he is someone

  410. that we must trust.

  411. He doesn't obey us

  412. but we must obey him.

  413. Do whatever

  414. he tells you.

  415. So this text

  416. is helping us

  417. to see the glory

  418. of Jesus' power

  419. and a little bit

  420. of how we should be

  421. responding to that power.

  422. But this miracle

  423. is a lot deeper than that.

  424. There's more going on here

  425. than just a brute display

  426. of power

  427. and there are hints

  428. sort of all over

  429. this narrative

  430. that tell us

  431. that something more

  432. is going on.

  433. First,

  434. Jesus talks about

  435. his hour

  436. in verse 4

  437. and then second

  438. there's this detail

  439. that John points out

  440. about these jars

  441. being used

  442. for Jewish purification

  443. in verse 6

  444. and then third

  445. we're told

  446. that this miracle

  447. is the first

  448. of Jesus' signs

  449. in verse 11.

  450. All these little hints

  451. in the narrative

  452. are pointers

  453. that what Jesus

  454. is doing here

  455. is more than just

  456. showing his power.

  457. It's more than just

  458. a trick

  459. to display

  460. how great he is.

  461. There's something

  462. deeper that we're

  463. meant to see

  464. and this is our

  465. second point.

  466. The deeper thing

  467. that we're meant

  468. to see is the glory

  469. not just of Jesus' power

  470. but the glory

  471. of his mission.

  472. Now isn't it strange

  473. that Jesus replies

  474. to Mary

  475. what does this

  476. have to do with me?

  477. My hour

  478. has not yet come.

  479. That's all the more

  480. strange when you realize

  481. that in John's gospel

  482. whenever Jesus

  483. talks about his hour

  484. he's talking about

  485. something very specific.

  486. It's not just

  487. a general way

  488. of him referencing

  489. his ministry

  490. as if

  491. it's not my time

  492. yet to sort of

  493. start doing all

  494. these things.

  495. In fact

  496. throughout the first

  497. half of John's gospel

  498. as we're being told

  499. about Jesus' ministry

  500. we're constantly

  501. being told

  502. that his hour

  503. hadn't come yet.

  504. It's not until

  505. chapter 12

  506. after Jesus

  507. rides into Jerusalem

  508. for the last time

  509. that finally

  510. he says

  511. now my hour

  512. has come.

  513. This is my hour

  514. because at that

  515. moment

  516. he's on his way

  517. to the cross

  518. and to his resurrection

  519. and to his exaltation.

  520. You see

  521. in John's gospel

  522. Jesus' hour

  523. is the hour

  524. of his death

  525. and resurrection.

  526. So the question is

  527. why

  528. when this young

  529. couple

  530. runs out of wine

  531. at their wedding feast

  532. and Mary says

  533. Jesus

  534. you should probably

  535. do something here

  536. why does Jesus say

  537. but my hour

  538. hasn't come?

  539. And by the way

  540. Mary probably

  541. isn't asking Jesus

  542. or intending for Jesus

  543. to do something

  544. miraculous here

  545. she's probably just

  546. asking him for help.

  547. John tells us

  548. in verse 11

  549. that this is the first

  550. miracle Jesus did

  551. so Mary probably

  552. isn't expecting him

  553. to do something miraculous.

  554. We know from Luke 1 and 2

  555. that Mary knew

  556. that Jesus was destined

  557. to be Israel's

  558. long awaited king

  559. but she probably

  560. hadn't seen him

  561. do anything like this

  562. before.

  563. So she's saying

  564. Jesus help

  565. and yet Jesus

  566. in response

  567. comes back

  568. with this almost

  569. nuclear reply

  570. but my hour

  571. hasn't come yet.

  572. What did Jesus see

  573. in this moment

  574. that Mary

  575. didn't see?

  576. What is it

  577. about this setting

  578. and this context?

  579. A bridegroom

  580. a bride

  581. a wedding

  582. a feast

  583. what about all

  584. that made Jesus

  585. think explicitly

  586. of his hour?

  587. Well friends

  588. I think Jesus

  589. was thinking

  590. of his hour

  591. because of what

  592. he understood

  593. his mission

  594. to be.

  595. You see

  596. when the great

  597. Old Testament

  598. prophets

  599. look forward

  600. to the messianic

  601. age

  602. to the age

  603. when God

  604. would come

  605. they often

  606. characterize it

  607. as a time

  608. when the wine

  609. would flow freely

  610. when fasting

  611. would give way

  612. to feasting.

  613. That's what

  614. Jeremiah 31

  615. was all about

  616. that we read

  617. earlier.

  618. Just one of

  619. many texts

  620. in the prophets

  621. when they

  622. looked ahead

  623. and saw

  624. that one day

  625. God would

  626. finally be

  627. united to

  628. his people

  629. like a groom

  630. united to

  631. his bride

  632. and that

  633. that would

  634. be a celebration

  635. to end

  636. all celebrations

  637. and they would

  638. feast

  639. and they would

  640. drink

  641. and they would

  642. do so forever.

  643. Later in his

  644. ministry

  645. Jesus himself

  646. would adapt

  647. the image

  648. of a wedding

  649. as a symbol

  650. for the completion

  651. of the messianic

  652. age.

  653. And you see

  654. friends

  655. that was

  656. Jesus'

  657. mission.

  658. He had

  659. come

  660. to begin

  661. to inaugurate

  662. this great

  663. work of God

  664. this in

  665. breaking

  666. of God's

  667. kingdom

  668. to start

  669. this banquet

  670. of lasting

  671. joy

  672. because

  673. God was

  674. breaking

  675. in.

  676. You see

  677. all around

  678. him

  679. in this

  680. moment

  681. in John

  682. 2

  683. Jesus

  684. was seeing

  685. an image

  686. a parable

  687. of why

  688. he came

  689. and at

  690. the center

  691. of that

  692. great feast

  693. that great

  694. feast of

  695. God

  696. that the

  697. prophets

  698. spoke of

  699. at the

  700. center

  701. of that

  702. great

  703. coming

  704. feast

  705. that Jesus

  706. had come

  707. to inaugurate

  708. just like a

  709. marriage

  710. in the center

  711. of that

  712. feast

  713. there was

  714. a covenant

  715. it's no

  716. accident

  717. that Jesus

  718. told them

  719. to fill

  720. the jars

  721. that were

  722. ordinarily

  723. used for

  724. purification

  725. rites

  726. there were

  727. probably other

  728. jars they

  729. could have

  730. used

  731. by the way

  732. you see

  733. there were

  734. rituals in

  735. the first

  736. century

  737. for Jews

  738. rituals

  739. for washing

  740. their utensils

  741. and rituals

  742. for washing

  743. their hands

  744. and all

  745. of these

  746. sort of

  747. were ways

  748. of kind

  749. of embodying

  750. and expressing

  751. the mosaic

  752. law

  753. and these

  754. big jars

  755. were the

  756. ones

  757. that you

  758. would

  759. use

  760. so what

  761. better

  762. way

  763. for Jesus

  764. to show

  765. that now

  766. the old

  767. covenant

  768. was being

  769. fulfilled

  770. in the

  771. new

  772. that the

  773. new

  774. had come

  775. than to

  776. take those

  777. old jars

  778. and fill

  779. them with

  780. something

  781. radically

  782. new

  783. to do

  784. a work

  785. of

  786. transformation

  787. in them

  788. the water

  789. of those

  790. old

  791. purification

  792. rites

  793. that water

  794. that could

  795. only wash

  796. you on

  797. the outside

  798. and it

  799. had to be

  800. repeated

  801. again

  802. and again

  803. and again

  804. was now

  805. giving way

  806. to the

  807. new wine

  808. of the

  809. great

  810. feast

  811. that God

  812. had all

  813. along

  814. promised

  815. you would

  816. bring

  817. this wine

  818. that you

  819. would drink

  820. down

  821. deep

  822. into the

  823. inside

  824. of yourself

  825. and that

  826. would

  827. satisfy

  828. you

  829. once

  830. and for

  831. all

  832. again

  833. John's

  834. gospel

  835. is in

  836. many ways

  837. all about

  838. this

  839. theme

  840. in his

  841. opening

  842. chapter

  843. we read

  844. there again

  845. and the

  846. word

  847. became

  848. flesh

  849. and

  850. dwelt

  851. among

  852. us

  853. and we

  854. have

  855. seen

  856. his

  857. glory

  858. from

  859. his

  860. fullness

  861. we've

  862. all received

  863. grace

  864. upon

  865. grace

  866. for the

  867. law

  868. was given

  869. through

  870. Moses

  871. grace

  872. and truth

  873. came

  874. through

  875. Jesus

  876. Christ

  877. the law

  878. of Moses

  879. the old

  880. covenant

  881. was just a

  882. pointer

  883. was just a

  884. shadow

  885. and Jesus

  886. came to bring

  887. the substance

  888. the fullness

  889. he came to

  890. bring the new

  891. and lasting

  892. covenant

  893. and at the

  894. heart of

  895. this new

  896. covenant

  897. that would

  898. bind God

  899. and his

  900. people together

  901. in lasting

  902. joy

  903. joy like a

  904. feast

  905. like a

  906. banquet

  907. at the

  908. heart

  909. of that

  910. binding

  911. covenant

  912. at the

  913. heart

  914. of that

  915. covenant

  916. was what

  917. those jars

  918. stood for

  919. but could

  920. never

  921. actually

  922. deliver

  923. at the

  924. heart

  925. of the

  926. new

  927. covenant

  928. was

  929. something

  930. that the

  931. law

  932. could never

  933. give

  934. lasting

  935. real

  936. purification

  937. cleansing

  938. the

  939. forgiveness

  940. of sins

  941. and that's

  942. why Jesus

  943. was at a

  944. wedding

  945. thinking of

  946. his hour

  947. that's why

  948. his mother's

  949. request for

  950. more wine

  951. made Jesus

  952. think of

  953. the cross

  954. because Jesus

  955. knew that

  956. one day

  957. he would

  958. be feast

  959. with his

  960. bride

  961. one day

  962. there would

  963. be

  964. festival

  965. joy

  966. with his

  967. church

  968. and there

  969. would be

  970. no

  971. unstoppable

  972. limit

  973. there would

  974. be nothing

  975. that would

  976. stop the

  977. feast of

  978. that day

  979. but to

  980. get there

  981. to win

  982. his bride

  983. to cleanse

  984. her so that

  985. she might

  986. drink deeply

  987. of the wine

  988. of his love

  989. and be

  990. satisfied

  991. Jesus

  992. would need

  993. to say

  994. I thirst

  995. God

  996. John will

  997. show us

  998. in chapter

  999. 19

  1000. that as

  1001. Jesus is

  1002. hanging on

  1003. the cross

  1004. they'll

  1005. fill a

  1006. sponge

  1007. with sour

  1008. wine

  1009. bitter to

  1010. the taste

  1011. and in

  1012. his thirst

  1013. he will

  1014. drink it

  1015. isn't it

  1016. amazing how

  1017. this gospel

  1018. is constructed

  1019. that the

  1020. very first

  1021. miracle that

  1022. Jesus does

  1023. is bringing

  1024. the best

  1025. wine

  1026. that they

  1027. had ever

  1028. tasted

  1029. but in

  1030. order to

  1031. bring it

  1032. home

  1033. Jesus will

  1034. drink the

  1035. bitterness

  1036. of our

  1037. sin

  1038. and our

  1039. guilt

  1040. and our

  1041. death

  1042. he'll

  1043. drink it

  1044. down

  1045. so that

  1046. we can

  1047. drink the

  1048. wine of

  1049. his

  1050. righteousness

  1051. and because

  1052. he's taken

  1053. our cup

  1054. down to

  1055. the very

  1056. dregs

  1057. we can

  1058. have no

  1059. fear

  1060. that the

  1061. cup of

  1062. his

  1063. righteousness

  1064. will ever

  1065. run dry

  1066. you see

  1067. friends this

  1068. new covenant

  1069. that Jesus

  1070. has come to

  1071. bring cannot

  1072. and will not

  1073. be broken

  1074. because he's

  1075. fulfilled all

  1076. the terms

  1077. and this is the

  1078. glory of his

  1079. mission

  1080. to fulfill the

  1081. law and to

  1082. complete what the

  1083. prophets spoke

  1084. of to win

  1085. his bride

  1086. and to save

  1087. the feast

  1088. isn't that a

  1089. sobering

  1090. description of

  1091. our human

  1092. condition

  1093. verse 3

  1094. the wine

  1095. ran out

  1096. how often

  1097. do our

  1098. human

  1099. attempts to

  1100. find joy

  1101. and happiness

  1102. come crashing

  1103. down

  1104. no matter

  1105. what it

  1106. is

  1107. the wine

  1108. runs out

  1109. but here

  1110. to rescue

  1111. us

  1112. Christ

  1113. intervenes

  1114. in verse

  1115. 10 the

  1116. master of the

  1117. feast pulls

  1118. the bridegroom

  1119. aside

  1120. now in that

  1121. culture the

  1122. groom actually

  1123. would have been

  1124. responsible for

  1125. paying for and

  1126. putting on the

  1127. wedding feast

  1128. so that's why the

  1129. master of

  1130. ceremonies this

  1131. master of the

  1132. feast pulls

  1133. the groom

  1134. aside

  1135. and he tells

  1136. this young

  1137. man he says

  1138. everyone serves

  1139. the good wine

  1140. first and

  1141. when people

  1142. have drunk

  1143. freely then

  1144. the poor

  1145. wine but

  1146. you have

  1147. kept the

  1148. good wine

  1149. until now

  1150. and is in

  1151. that moment

  1152. an incredible

  1153. picture of the

  1154. gospel

  1155. this young

  1156. groom is

  1157. about to

  1158. experience the

  1159. embarrassment of

  1160. his lifetime

  1161. in an honor and

  1162. shame culture this

  1163. wedding feast that

  1164. he has planned and

1165. he has paid for and

  1166. his family is

  1167. responsible for is

  1168. about to come up

  1169. short and all of

  1170. his family and

1171. all of his friends and

  1172. all of his in-laws

  1173. are there and

  1174. there's a whole

  1175. mountain of

  1176. social shame that's

  1177. about to come

  1178. crashing down on

  1179. his head

  1180. a mountain that

  1181. he might never

  1182. come out from

  1183. under

  1184. but instead of

  1185. getting all that

  1186. this young

  1187. groom

  1188. he gets the

  1189. credit for what

  1190. Jesus has done

  1191. and he's

  1192. saved

  1193. and that's the

  1194. heart of the

  1195. gospel friends

  1196. that through

  1197. believing and

  1198. trusting in

  1199. Christ you

  1200. get the

  1201. credit for

  1202. what he

  1203. has done

  1204. his death

  1205. pays for

  1206. your sin

  1207. and his

  1208. righteousness

  1209. covers your

  1210. life and

  1211. you are

  1212. saved

  1213. have you come

  1214. to rest in

  1215. that

  1216. or are you

  1217. still trying to

  1218. prop up your

  1219. identity in some

  1220. other way are

  1221. you still trying to

  1222. get out from

  1223. under that

  1224. mountain of

  1225. shame in some

  1226. other way are

  1227. you still trying to

  1228. be whole in some

  1229. other way and

  1230. your wine is

  1231. running out

  1232. instead receive

  1233. him get the

  1234. credit for what

  1235. he's done that's

  1236. the gospel and

  1237. that's the glory of

  1238. his mission

  1239. let's finish with

  1240. the last point that

  1241. we see here

  1242. third I think we

  1243. see here the glory

  1244. of Jesus's

  1245. lasting joy

  1246. don't these words

  1247. just ring out

  1248. the master of the

  1249. feast says you

  1250. have kept the

  1251. good wine

  1252. until now

  1253. that's the note

  1254. that the story

  1255. ends on

  1256. and of course the

  1257. irony is is that

  1258. the bridegroom had

  1259. served his best

1260. he had done all he

  1261. could do and it

  1262. fell short and it

  1263. wasn't enough and

1264. it was about to end

  1265. in disappointment and

  1266. shame but the

  1267. wine that Jesus

  1268. brings is better

  1269. better than the

  1270. best thing that

  1271. they could ever

  1272. come up with on

  1273. their own

  1274. you've kept the

  1275. good wine until

  1276. now

  1277. J.C.

  1278. Ryle put it this

  1279. way commenting on

  1280. this paragraph of

  1281. scripture he says

  1282. the world gives its

  1283. best things like the

  1284. best wine first and

  1285. its worst things

  1286. last the longer we

  1287. serve the world the

  1288. more disappointing

  1289. unsatisfactory and

  1290. unsavory will its

  1291. gifts prove Christ

  1292. on the other hand

  1293. gives his servants

  1294. their best things

  1295. last they have

  1296. first the cross the

  1297. race and the battle

  1298. but then the rest

  1299. the glory and the

  1300. crown for the

  1301. believer in Christ

  1302. friends there is

  1303. always better to

  1304. come no matter how

  1305. good things are now

  1306. no matter how terrible

  1307. things are now

  1308. better things are

  1309. still to come and

  1310. what we know from

  1311. the New Testament is

  1312. that the work of

  1313. Christ will ultimately

1314. end in the renewal of

  1315. all creation that

  1316. these joys that we

  1317. experience now that if

  1318. we are in Christ

  1319. they're just a

  1320. foretaste of something

  1321. better to come when

  1322. Christ returns and

  1323. heals this created

  1324. order when the banquet

  1325. of heaven becomes the

  1326. feast of earth and

  1327. again all of creation

  1328. rejoices in the

  1329. presence of its creator

  1330. and redeemer and we

  1331. the bride of Christ

  1332. those who have

  1333. trusted in him will

1334. be in the midst of

  1335. that celebration

  1336. living out the

  1337. glorious freedom as

  1338. Paul says of the

  1339. daughters and the

1340. sons of God no matter

  1341. what our journey has

1342. been in this life one

1343. day we will turn to

1344. the great master of the

  1345. banquet and say you've

  1346. kept the good wine

1347. until now and it will

  1348. only get better so

  1349. for instance this is

  1350. glory so orient your

  1351. life around this make

1352. this what you live for

1353. this glory yeah and you

  1354. will not be disappointed

1355. let's pray our Lord Jesus

1356. how often we have sought

1357. for joy and happiness and

1358. created things when Lord you

1359. are the giver of all good

1360. gifts Lord thank you that

  1361. the promise of this
