  1. Gospel of Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  2. If you're looking in one of the Pew Bibles, it's page 859.

  3. As we prepare to look into God's Word, let's pray.

  4. Lord, as we just sung, we acknowledge you as the fount of every blessing.

  5. Lord, we acknowledge that we are prone to wander away.

  6. We pray that through your Word this morning that you would once again seal our hearts,

  7. work in us by your Spirit to draw us near to you,

  8. to assure us of your grace and mercy,

  9. and to call us and equip us for what you've called us to do.

  10. Be with us today in Jesus' name. Amen.

  11. Well, this morning we're beginning a new series in the Gospel of Luke entitled,

  12. Who is This?

  13. From now until Easter, we'll be walking through chapters 4 through 8 of the Gospel of Luke.

  14. And we've chosen this part of Scripture to focus on,

  15. partly because it's just been a few years since we've preached through part of one of the Gospels in the morning service,

  16. and partly because the Gospels, perhaps more than any other part of Scripture,

  17. focus our attention directly on the person of Jesus.

  18. The heart of Christianity is not just a theological idea,

  19. or an ethical directive,

  20. or a spiritual experience.

  21. At the heart of Christianity is the person of Jesus Christ.

  22. And one of the main questions that the disciples and the crowds ask over and over in this section of Luke is,

  23. Who is this one?

  24. And Jesus himself will ask that question to his disciples,

  25. Who do you say that I am?

  26. And that's the question we want to focus on over the next few months,

  27. is looking at the person of Jesus.

  28. If you're not a follower of Jesus,

  29. if you're exploring Christianity,

  30. this is a great series for you,

  31. because we're focusing on the person who's right at the heart of the Christian faith.

  32. This is who it's all about.

  33. This is the one on whom Christianity stands or falls.

  34. This is the person whom you need to know above all else.

  35. If you're a new believer in Jesus,

  36. this will help you grow.

  37. As we look at the beginning of Jesus' ministry,

  38. when he calls his disciples to him,

  39. and begins teaching them who he is and what he's all about.

  40. And if you've been following Jesus for a long time,

  41. I hope that this time in the Gospel of Luke will refocus our attention once again,

  42. on the one who is truly central in our faith.

  43. And sometimes we can get distracted,

  44. even disillusioned by life's trials and troubles.

  45. Sometimes we can get excited and engaged in many good and worthwhile endeavors.

  46. But along the way, we can lose our focus on Jesus himself.

  47. And I hope this series will help us fix our eyes on him in a fresh way.

  48. So this morning we're reading Luke chapter 4, verses 14 to 30.

    Luke 4:14–30

  49. Let's read these verses together.

  50. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee.

  51. And a report about him went out through all the surrounding country.

  52. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

  53. And he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up.

  54. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day,

  55. and he stood up to read.

  56. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him.

  57. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

  58. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

  59. because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

  60. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives,

  61. and recovering of sight to the blind.

  62. To set at liberty those who are oppressed,

  63. to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

  64. And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down.

  65. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.

  66. And he began to say to them,

  67. Today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.

  68. And all spoke well of him,

  69. and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth.

  70. Then they said,

  71. Is not this Joseph's son?

  72. And he said to them,

  73. Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb,

  74. Physician, heal yourself.

  75. What we have heard you did in Capernaum,

  76. do here in your hometown as well.

  77. And he said,

  78. Truly I say to you,

  79. no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

  80. But in truth I tell you,

  81. there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah,

  82. when the heavens were shut up three years and six months,

  83. and a great famine came over all the land,

  84. and Elijah was sent to none of them,

  85. but only to Zarephath,

  86. in the land of Sidon,

  87. to a woman who was a widow.

  88. And there were many lepers in Israel

  89. in the time of the prophet Elisha,

  90. and none of them was cleansed,

  91. but only Naaman the Syrian.

  92. When they heard these things,

  93. all in the synagogue were filled with wrath,

  94. and they rose up and drove him out of the town

  95. and brought him to the brow of the hill

  96. on which their town was built

  97. so that they could throw him down the cliff.

  98. But passing through their midst,

  99. he went away.

  100. This morning we're looking at

  101. the opening of Jesus' public ministry

  102. in the Gospel of Luke,

  103. his inaugural speech, if you will,

  104. that sets the stage for all that is to come.

  105. And this morning we'll see two main things

  106. about Jesus and his mission.

  107. The first thing that we'll see

  108. is that Jesus came to comfort the afflicted.

  109. Verse 14 to 22.

  110. The first half of this passage

  111. is focused primarily on Jesus' words

  112. in verses 18 and 19.

  113. If you notice, verse 16 to 20

  114. all sort of surround these words.

  115. Verse 16 begins,

  116. he went to the synagogue,

  117. he stood up to read,

  118. the scroll was given to him,

  119. he unrolls the scroll,

  120. and then he reads.

  121. And then the same things happen

  122. in reverse order.

  123. He rolls up the scroll,

  124. he gives it back,

  125. he sits down,

  126. and then there's another reference

  127. to the people in the synagogue.

  128. And so this beginning of this passage

  129. focuses us on these words

  130. that he quotes from the prophet Isaiah,

  131. and then what he says in verse 21,

  132. today this scripture has been fulfilled

  133. in your hearing.

  134. Jesus came to comfort the afflicted.

  135. And he did so by teaching from the scriptures.

  136. That's the,

  137. under the heading of comforting the afflicted,

  138. I want to make three sub points,

  139. and this is the first one.

  140. He comforted the afflicted from the scriptures.

  141. Now this is actually the only recorded sermon

  142. of Jesus in a synagogue

  143. that we have recorded for us in the gospels.

  144. And obviously it's a summary of what he said,

  145. it's not every word he said,

  146. but the focus is

  147. how Jesus' ministry is to be interpreted

  148. by scripture,

  149. how he's the fulfillment of scripture.

  150. The first thing Jesus did to begin his public ministry

  151. was reading the scriptures.

  152. So we see that Jesus' public ministry

  153. was not only about healing sicknesses

  154. or driving out demons

  155. or being present with hurting people,

  156. though he would do all of those things,

  157. it began with proclaiming and teaching

  158. the word of God.

  159. Verse 15 says,

  160. he taught in their synagogues.

  161. And that's a word that indicates

  162. an ongoing pattern,

  163. not just a one-time action.

  164. But this was what Jesus was going around doing,

  165. teaching.

  166. Now, of course,

  167. Jesus' word and Jesus' works go together.

  168. Jesus did all the kinds of works

  169. that he talks about in his word.

  170. But here we see the importance of the scriptures

  171. to Jesus and his ministry.

  172. And before we get into the content of those,

  173. I want us to see that we can't understand Jesus

  174. apart from the scriptures that he quoted.

  175. You know, even think about it.

  176. When Jesus stood up,

  177. they gave him a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.

  178. Now, if you've ever read Isaiah,

  179. it's a long book.

  180. Right now, in the modern Bibles,

  181. there are 66 chapters.

  182. Back then, there were no chapter and verse divisions.

  183. It was just a long scroll.

  184. So how did Jesus know where to turn in the scroll?

  185. Think about it.

  186. Most of us would get up there,

  187. they give you a big scroll,

  188. and you think,

  189. hmm, yeah, there's this passage

  190. that's in here somewhere.

  191. Hmm, hmm, is it here?

  192. Fumbling around for five minutes.

  193. Jesus wasn't fumbling around for five minutes.

  194. He opened the scroll.

  195. He knew the scriptures because he had studied them.

  196. He had meditated on them.

  197. He had reflected on them.

  198. He knew the scriptures.

  199. And so he could open up the scriptures

  200. and speak to the people

  201. and speak about what he himself

  202. had come to do and to be.

  203. So let me encourage us

  204. in this new year to read the scriptures.

  205. You know, maybe you have trouble reading.

  206. Well, there are many other options.

  207. You can listen to the Bible on CD.

  208. You can download it on your phone.

  209. Listen to it while you're in the car,

  210. on the bus, walking to work.

  211. Maybe you have trouble understanding the scriptures.

  212. Join a Bible study group.

  213. Or talk to someone

  214. who's maybe been a Christian for a little while

  215. and say, I'm having trouble understanding.

  216. Can we get together and read the Bible together?

  217. If you're not sure who to ask,

  218. come and talk to one of the pastors or the elders.

  219. Or to one of the Bible study leaders.

  220. If Jesus defined his own ministry

  221. with reference to the scriptures,

  222. so must we.

  223. If Jesus prioritized teaching

  224. and learning from the scriptures,

  225. so must we.

  226. If Jesus looked, directed his hearers

  227. to the scriptures to find comfort

  228. and direction, so must we.

  229. So brothers and sisters,

  230. let us spend time in God's word this year.

  231. Sometimes we can look for comfort

  232. when we long for comfort everywhere else

  233. except in the word of God.

  234. And Jesus says, start in the word of God.

  235. That's how he comforts the afflicted

  236. through the word of God.

  237. Second sub point,

  238. Jesus came to comfort the afflicted

  239. as God's servant.

  240. Now Jesus quoted

  241. from the passage we read earlier

  242. in the service, Isaiah 61,

  243. the spirit of the Lord is upon me

  244. because he has anointed me.

  245. Now if you read the book of Isaiah,

  246. and especially if you come to chapter 42,

  247. you'll notice that Isaiah

  248. at several points

  249. talks about this figure

  250. whom he calls

  251. the servant of the Lord.

  252. So chapter 42 of Isaiah begins,

  253. behold my servant

  254. whom I uphold,

  255. I have put my spirit upon him.

  256. So Isaiah is speaking

  257. of this person

  258. who is a spirit-filled servant

  259. of the Lord.

  260. Now in some ways,

  261. does Isaiah see himself

  262. as that spirit-filled servant

  263. of the Lord?

  264. Perhaps in some ways.

  265. Does he see Israel as a nation,

  266. as being called to that?

  267. Perhaps in some ways.

  268. But Jesus sees himself

  269. as the ultimate,

  270. as the fulfillment

  271. of Isaiah's figure,

  272. of the servant.

  273. So let me just sort of

  274. explain this figure of the servant

  275. a little that Isaiah speaks about.

  276. So Isaiah 42 begins,

  277. behold my servant,

  278. I've put my spirit upon him.

  279. And then we see this servant

  280. is gentle and compassionate

  281. to comfort.

  282. Chapter 42, verses 2 and 3,

  283. he will not cry aloud

  284. or lift up his voice

  285. or make it heard in the street.

  286. A bruised reed

  287. he will not break

  288. and a faintly burning wick

  289. he will not snuff out.

  290. He's gentle.

  291. He's compassionate

  292. to comfort the weak

  293. and helpless.

  294. But he's also powerful

  295. and mighty to save.

  296. Chapter 42, verse 6 and 7,

  297. I will give you

  298. as a covenant for the people,

  299. a light for the nations

  300. to open blind eyes,

  301. to bring out prisoners

  302. from the dungeon,

  303. from the prison,

  304. those who sit in darkness.

  305. Isaiah 49 says

  306. that the servant

  307. will bring salvation

  308. not just to Israel

  309. but to the ends of the earth.

  310. He says,

  311. I will make you a light

  312. to the nations

  313. that my salvation

  314. may reach to the end

  315. of the earth.

  316. And then if you go on,

  317. Isaiah 50 and 52 and 53

  318. speak about the suffering

  319. and then the victory

  320. of this servant.

  321. He's one who would be

  322. despised and rejected,

  323. a man of sorrows,

  324. well acquainted with grief,

  325. one who would be pierced

  326. for our transgressions,

  327. crushed for our iniquities.

  328. He would suffer

  329. in the place of sinners.

  330. And then yet he would be victorious.

  331. The end of chapter 53 says,

  332. he shall see his offspring

  333. and prolong his days.

  334. The righteous one,

  335. my servant,

  336. shall make many

  337. to be accounted righteous.

  338. And Isaiah 61,

  339. even though it doesn't use

  340. the phrase,

  341. the servant of the Lord,

  342. it seems very clearly

  343. to be talking about

  344. the same person.

  345. Look at these verses

  346. that Jesus quotes from.

  347. The spirit of the Lord

  348. is upon me.

  349. He's a spirit anointed person.

  350. And Luke has pointed out

  351. several times

  352. Jesus is full of the spirit.

  353. Chapter 4, verse 1 and 14.

  354. He's gentle and compassionate

  355. to comfort,

  356. bringing good news to the poor.

  357. Isaiah speaks of him

  358. binding up the brokenhearted.

  359. But he's also powerful

  360. and mighty to save,

  361. proclaiming liberty

  362. to the captives

  363. and recovering of sight

  364. to the blind.

  365. And as we'll see later

  366. in this passage,

  367. he came to bring salvation

  368. not just for the people of Israel

  369. but to all the nations

  370. of the earth.

  371. And later on,

  372. the Gospel of Luke

  373. will show us

  374. that the salvation

  375. Jesus came to bring

  376. would come through

  377. his suffering

  378. and ultimately

  379. through his death

  380. on the cross.

  381. That's how he would

  382. achieve his victory.

  383. So Luke is introducing us

  384. and Jesus is saying,

  385. I am this servant

  386. of the Lord,

  387. the one of whom

  388. Isaiah prophesied

  389. so long ago.

  390. in him,

  391. in Jesus,

  392. we will find

  393. all the strength

  394. and all the comfort

  395. and all the salvation

  396. that we need.

  397. You see,

  398. when Jesus preached,

  399. he didn't just start

  400. by giving us good advice.

  401. He didn't just start

  402. by saying,

  403. here are the things

  404. that you need to change

  405. to make your life better.

  406. He started by saying,

  407. God has sent me.

  408. This is what I've come

  409. to do.

  410. I've come to do

  411. what you could never

  412. do on your own.

  413. I've come to bring

  414. good news

  415. that you could never earn

  416. and never deserve.

  417. So Jesus came

  418. to comfort the afflicted

  419. through the Scriptures.

  420. He came to comfort

  421. the afflicted

  422. as God's servant.

  423. And he came to comfort

  424. the afflicted

  425. both physically

  426. and spiritually.

  427. You know,

  428. many people have asked,

  429. well,

  430. who is Jesus speaking about?

  431. Is he speaking about

  432. people who are

  433. physically poor,

  434. blind,

  435. oppressed?

  436. Or is he speaking

  437. about spiritual poverty,

  438. blindness,

  439. oppression?

  440. I think the answer

  441. is yes.

  442. Both.

  443. There's an important sense

  444. in which Jesus

  445. is speaking about

  446. people who are literally

  447. poor,

  448. captive,

  449. blind,

  450. and oppressed.

  451. Howard Thurman,

  452. who is a close friend

  453. of Martin Luther King,

  454. Sr.,

  455. wrote this

  456. back in about 1949.

  457. He said,

  458. I can count on the fingers

  459. of one hand

  460. the number of times

  461. that I have heard

  462. a sermon on the meaning

  463. of Christianity

  464. to the man who stands

  465. with his back

  466. against the wall.

  467. The masses of men

  468. and women live

  469. with their backs

  470. constantly against

  471. the wall.

  472. They are the poor,

  473. the disinherited,

  474. the dispossessed.

  475. What does Christianity

  476. say to them?

  477. The search for an answer

  478. to this question

  479. is perhaps the most

  480. important religious quest

  481. of modern life.

  482. And maybe that's exactly

  483. how you feel.

  484. You feel like your back

  485. is against the wall.

  486. You feel desperate,

  487. trapped,

  488. distressed,

  489. depressed.

  490. Impossible demands

  491. are being made of you.

  492. How can you ever meet them?

  493. Terrible things

  494. have been done to you.

  495. Is there any hope

  496. of healing?

  497. Life seems perpetually

  498. overwhelming

  499. and there seems

  500. no way out.

  501. And Jesus speaks

  502. specifically to you

  503. here.

  504. You know,

  505. he doesn't just say

  506. I've come for anybody

  507. and everybody,

  508. though he will say that

  509. at other times.

  510. He says I've come

  511. for the poor,

  512. for the captives,

  513. for the blind,

  514. for the oppressed,

  515. for the people who

  516. would think that

  517. anybody and everybody

  518. means anybody

  519. and everybody else

  520. except me.

  521. and Jesus says

  522. to you specifically

  523. I've come for you.

  524. He chose to be born

  525. as a Jew

  526. in the line of Abraham

  527. in a time and place

  528. where Jews were

  529. an oppressed minority

  530. in a family

  531. that was not rich

  532. because he wants

  533. to communicate

  534. he can identify

  535. with you

  536. whatever your

  537. affliction may be.

  538. And you know,

  539. in the history

  540. of the world,

  541. whenever Jesus'

  542. teachings have been

  543. taken seriously,

  544. the poor,

  545. the captives,

  546. the blind,

  547. the oppressed

  548. have found renewed

  549. hope and joy

  550. and they've been

  551. treated with increased

  552. dignity

  553. and compassion.

  554. Even many

  555. non-Christians

  556. have recognized

  557. this.

  558. In the ancient world,

  559. in the fourth

  560. century AD,

  561. the pagan Roman

  562. emperor Julian

  563. said this.

  564. He said,

  565. these impious

  566. Galileans,

  567. that was his

  568. derogatory name

  569. for Christians,

  570. these impious

  571. Galileans not only

  572. feed their own

  573. poor people,

  574. they feed ours.

  575. Also,

  576. they devote

  577. themselves to

  578. works of charity,

  579. see their love

  580. feasts,

  581. their Christian

  582. assemblies,

  583. and their tables

  584. spread for the

  585. destitute.

  586. Such practice

  587. is common

  588. among them

  589. and causes

  590. contempt for

  591. our traditional

  592. pagan gods.

  593. Or in the

  594. modern world,

  595. Gandhi.

  596. Gandhi never

  597. embraced

  598. Christianity.

  599. He said he was

  600. a Hindu to the

  601. end of his

  602. life,

  603. but he was

  604. deeply attracted

  605. to something

  606. in Jesus,

  607. in the Sermon

  608. on the Mount,

  609. and in Jesus'

  610. example of

  611. self-sacrificial

  612. love.

  613. And his

  614. non-violent

  615. movement was

  616. deeply influenced

  617. by Jesus'

  618. example and

  619. teachings.

  620. Or consider

  621. Jürgen

  622. Habermas,

  623. the Christian

  624. social,

  625. he's not a

  626. Christian,

  627. the German

  628. social theorist

  629. who wrote

  630. this,

  631. the ideals

  632. of freedom,

  633. conscience,

  634. human rights,

  635. and democracy

  636. are the direct

  637. legacy of the

  638. Judaic ethic

  639. of justice,

  640. that is the

  641. Old Testament

  642. ethic of justice,

  643. and the Christian

  644. ethic of love.

  645. Up to this

  646. very day,

  647. there is no

  648. alternative to it.

  649. everything else

  650. is idle

  651. post-modern

  652. talk.

  653. Strong words

  654. from a scholar

  655. who back in

  656. the 80s said,

  657. religion is just

  658. an alienating

  659. reality and a

  660. tool of control.

  661. And he says,

  662. the Jewish

  663. and Christian

  664. legacy of

  665. justice and

  666. love that

  667. comes from

  668. the Bible

  669. is the root

  670. of our ideals

  671. of freedom,

  672. conscience,

  673. human rights,

  674. and democracy.

  675. Yes,

  676. the Bible

  677. has been

  678. misused

  679. to control

  680. and manipulate

  681. people.

  682. Yes,

  683. the Bible

  684. has been

  685. twisted out

  686. of context

  687. to support

  688. slavery and

  689. segregation and

  690. all kinds of

  691. other evils,

  692. but Jesus came

  693. to bring good

  694. news for the

  695. poor and the

  696. oppressed.

  697. And whenever

  698. people have

  699. taken his

  700. teachings seriously,

  701. it has made

  702. a difference.

  703. Jesus is not

  704. just speaking

  705. about people

  706. who are

  707. physically

  708. poor,

  709. captive,

  710. blind,

  711. and oppressed.

  712. He's also

  713. speaking about

  714. a spiritual

  715. reality.

  716. And this is

  717. actually a

  718. challenging

  719. thing because

  720. Jesus is saying,

  721. do you realize

  722. that you too

  723. are spiritually

  724. speaking

  725. poor,

  726. captive,

  727. blind,

  728. and oppressed.

  729. Jesus says,

  730. you're spiritually

  731. poor.

  732. In other words,

  733. as a finite

  734. creature,

  735. everything that

  736. you have

  737. is on loan

  738. from God.

  739. You own

  740. nothing.

  741. You didn't

  742. create yourself.

  743. Even more than

  744. that,

  745. you are in debt

  746. to God because

  747. you have not

  748. done what you

  749. should have done

  750. and you have

  751. done things that

  752. you shouldn't

  753. have done.

  754. And there's no

  755. way that you

  756. can pay God

  757. back.

  758. You are

  759. spiritually poor.

  760. you're spiritually

  761. captive.

  762. We are by

  763. nature captives

  764. to our sin

  765. whether it's

  766. manifest itself

  767. as pride

  768. or greed

  769. or lust

  770. or fear

  771. of other

  772. people.

  773. Jesus says,

  774. we cannot

  775. simply free

  776. ourselves

  777. because we're

  778. spiritually blind.

  779. You know,

  780. most of the

  781. ways that we

  782. hurt other

  783. people,

  784. we don't even

  785. realize.

  786. realize.

  787. Maybe the

  788. people around

  789. us realize.

  790. They can see

  791. and feel

  792. all the ways

  793. that we hurt

  794. one another.

  795. But we're

  796. often blind

  797. to our

  798. greatest

  799. weaknesses.

  800. And the

  801. Bible also

  802. says that we

  803. don't even

  804. recognize most

  805. of the ways

  806. that we

  807. deeply

  808. offend

  809. God,

  810. our

  811. creator.

  812. Jesus says

  813. we're

  814. spiritually

  815. oppressed.

  816. Not only

  817. by our

  818. own

  819. patterns

  820. of sin

  821. but

  822. vulnerable

  823. to dark

  824. spiritual

  825. forces

  826. that are

  827. out to

  828. steal

  829. and kill

  830. and destroy.

  831. And ultimately

  832. Jesus' message

  833. is only good

  834. news

  835. for us

  836. if we

  837. identify

  838. ourselves

  839. spiritually

  840. in these

  841. ways.

  842. If we

  843. acknowledge

  844. that we

  845. are not

  846. self-sufficient

  847. and we

  848. need

  849. help

  850. from

  851. outside

  852. ourselves.

  853. But if we

  854. acknowledge

  855. that then

  856. his word

  857. is good

  858. news

  859. because

  860. he's

  861. come

  862. to

  863. comfort

  864. the

  865. afflicted

  866. to

  867. proclaim

  868. good

  869. news

  870. for the

  871. poor

  872. and

  873. freedom

  874. for the

  875. captives

  876. and light.

  877. He shows

  878. us who

  879. we really

  880. are.

  881. He gives

  882. us insight

  883. and wisdom

  884. into who

  885. we are

  886. and into

  887. the world

  888. that he's

  889. made

  890. and into

  891. who God

  892. is most

  893. of all.

  894. And he

  895. gives us

  896. release.

  897. That word

  898. release is

  899. the same

  900. word that

  901. is sometimes

  902. translated

  903. forgiveness.

  904. Release

  905. from the

  906. burden

  907. of our

  908. sin.

  909. Forgiveness

  910. for our

  911. guilt

  912. and favor

  913. from God.

  914. Jesus

  915. has come

  916. to comfort

  917. the afflicted

  918. from the

  919. scriptures

  920. as God's

  921. servant

  922. both physically

  923. and spiritually.

  924. That's the

  925. first thing

  926. we see

  927. in this

  928. passage.

  929. But we

  930. also see

  931. a second

  932. thing

  933. in verses

  934. 22 to

  935. 30

  936. that Jesus

  937. has come

  938. to challenge

  939. the comfortable.

  940. Notice

  941. the crowd's

  942. initial reaction

  943. to Jesus.

  944. Verse

  945. 14.

  946. A report

  947. about him

  948. went out

  949. through all

  950. the surrounding

  951. country.

  952. His fame

  953. is growing.

  954. Verse

  955. 15.

  956. He's being

  957. glorified

  958. by all.

  959. Verse

  960. 17.

  961. He's given

  962. the honor

  963. of reading

  964. the scriptures

  965. publicly

  966. in the

  967. synagogue

  968. and given

  969. the invitation

  970. to expound

  971. upon them

  972. publicly.

  973. Verse

  974. 19.

  975. The eyes

  976. of all

  977. are fixed

  978. on him

  979. in a sense

  980. of expectant

  981. trust.

  982. Verse

  983. 22.

  984. All

  985. spoke

  986. well

  987. of him

  988. and marveled

  989. at the words

  990. coming from

  991. his mouth.

  992. But then

  993. notice how

  994. the crowd's

  995. reaction

  996. flips.

  997. And it

  998. starts in

  999. verse 22

  1000. when they

  1001. say,

  1002. isn't this

  1003. Joseph's

  1004. son?

  1005. Now what

  1006. does that

  1007. statement

  1008. mean?

  1009. It seems

  1010. like there's

  1011. at least

  1012. some

  1013. criticism

  1014. or skepticism

  1015. expressed

  1016. in that

  1017. statement.

  1018. Perhaps

  1019. even

  1020. mockery

  1021. or scorn.

  1022. What

  1023. is this

  1024. carpenter's

  1025. son?

  1026. This

  1027. small town

  1028. boy that

  1029. we've all

  1030. grown up

  1031. with.

  1032. What is

  1033. he doing

  1034. saying that

  1035. the scriptures

  1036. are fulfilled

  1037. in him?

  1038. That he

  1039. is the

  1040. promised

  1041. servant

  1042. of the

  1043. Lord.

  1044. That seems

  1045. rather arrogant

  1046. and self

  1047. important.

  1048. How can

  1049. he be

  1050. saying that

  1051. about himself?

  1052. Isn't

  1053. he just

  1054. Joseph's

  1055. son?

  1056. And then

  1057. in verse

  1058. 28 and

  1059. 29 it

  1060. gets worse.

  1061. They're

  1062. filled with

  1063. wrath.

  1064. They drive

  1065. him out

  1066. of town

  1067. and they

  1068. try to

  1069. throw him

  1070. off a

  1071. cliff.

  1072. They

  1073. start out

  1074. praising

  1075. him,

  1076. marveling

  1077. at him,

  1078. adoring

  1079. him.

  1080. They end

  1081. up furious

  1082. at him.

  1083. Wanting

  1084. to get

  1085. rid

  1086. of him.

  1087. What did

  1088. Jesus say

  1089. here that

  1090. was so

  1091. challenging,

  1092. that was so

  1093. provocative to

  1094. them?

  1095. We'll look

  1096. down at

  1097. verse 23

  1098. to 27.

  1099. Verse 23

  1100. and 24,

  1101. Jesus refers

  1102. to two

  1103. well-known

  1104. proverbs.

  1105. Physician,

  1106. heal yourself

  1107. and then

  1108. no prophet

  1109. is acceptable

  1110. in his

  1111. hometown.

  1112. both

  1113. were well-known

  1114. statements

  1115. that

  1116. acknowledged

  1117. people's

  1118. tendency

  1119. to reject

  1120. prophets

  1121. and

  1122. teachers,

  1123. especially

  1124. those who

  1125. are closest

  1126. to them.

  1127. And it's

  1128. sort of like

  1129. Jesus is

  1130. looking at

  1131. them and

  1132. saying,

  1133. yeah,

  1134. I know

  1135. how this

  1136. is going

  1137. to end

  1138. and it's

  1139. not going

  1140. to be

  1141. pretty

  1142. because I

  1143. won't be

  1144. able to

  1145. please you

  1146. because

  1147. ultimately

  1148. I haven't

  1149. come to

  1150. please you.

  1151. My purpose

  1152. is to do

  1153. the will

  1154. of my

  1155. father in

  1156. heaven.

  1157. And I

  1158. see

  1159. that you're

  1160. not going

  1161. to understand

  1162. that.

  1163. Now this

  1164. is where

  1165. Jesus had

  1166. been brought

  1167. up.

  1168. This is

  1169. Nazareth.

  1170. This was

  1171. his hometown.

  1172. He knew

  1173. these people

  1174. pretty well.

  1175. And so

  1176. he didn't

  1177. get caught

  1178. up in

  1179. their initial

  1180. expressions

  1181. of enthusiasm

  1182. and admiration.

  1183. He perceived

  1184. that underneath

  1185. they were

  1186. deeply at

  1187. odds with

  1188. his mission

  1189. and his

  1190. message.

  1191. And so

  1192. he spoke

  1193. some

  1194. challenging

  1195. words that

  1196. exposed their

  1197. underlying

  1198. attitudes.

  1199. Now verse

  1200. 25 to

  1201. 27,

  1202. Jesus gets

  1203. even more

  1204. specific.

  1205. He doesn't

  1206. just point

  1207. to this

  1208. general

  1209. pattern that

  1210. people often

  1211. reject,

  1212. prophets and

  1213. teachers,

  1214. especially those

  1215. closest to

  1216. them.

  1217. But he

  1218. says this,

  1219. he says,

  1220. there were

  1221. many widows

  1222. in Israel

  1223. in the days

  1224. of Elijah

  1225. during a

  1226. great famine,

  1227. a time of

  1228. divine judgment,

  1229. and Elijah

  1230. was sent to

  1231. none of

  1232. them,

  1233. but only

  1234. to a

  1235. woman who

  1236. was a

  1237. widow in

  1238. Zarephath

  1239. in the

  1240. land of

  1241. Sidon.

  1242. And there

  1243. were many

  1244. lepers in

  1245. Israel in

  1246. the time of

  1247. the prophet

  1248. Elisha,

  1249. and none

  1250. of them

  1251. was cleansed,

  1252. but only

  1253. Naaman the

  1254. Syrian.

  1255. And you

  1256. might say,

  1257. what exactly

  1258. is the

  1259. point that

  1260. Jesus is

  1261. making here?

  1262. Well,

  1263. Jesus is

  1264. speaking about

  1265. two of the

  1266. greatest

  1267. prophets in

  1268. the Old

  1269. Testament,

  1270. Elijah and

  1271. Elisha.

  1272. And he's

  1273. pointing out a

  1274. pattern that

  1275. happened in

  1276. both of their

  1277. ministries.

  1278. In both

  1279. cases,

  1280. native Israelites

  1281. were passed

  1282. over in

  1283. favor of

  1284. foreign

  1285. outsiders.

  1286. outsiders.

  1287. And even

  1288. more than

  1289. that,

  1290. they were

  1291. passed over

  1292. in favor

  1293. of foreign

  1294. outsiders who

  1295. were historically

  1296. hostile to the

  1297. nation of

  1298. Israel.

  1299. The land of

  1300. Sidon had

  1301. often been at

  1302. war with

  1303. Israel.

  1304. Naaman,

  1305. the Syrian,

  1306. was a military

  1307. commander.

  1308. He had

  1309. attacked

  1310. Israel.

  1311. And Jesus

  1312. says this was

  1313. not an

  1314. accident.

  1315. It was part

  1316. of God's

  1317. plan.

  1318. Do you

  1319. notice verse

  1320. 26?

  1321. It says,

  1322. Elijah was

  1323. sent.

  1324. It's what

  1325. is sometimes

  1326. called a

  1327. divine

  1328. passive.

  1329. In other

  1330. words,

  1331. it's a

  1332. passive

  1333. verb,

  1334. he was

  1335. sent,

  1336. that points

  1337. to divine

  1338. action.

  1339. Who sent

  1340. him?

  1341. God sent

  1342. him.

  1343. Elijah was

  1344. sent by

  1345. God.

  1346. Verse 27,

  1347. none of

  1348. them was

  1349. cleansed by

  1350. God,

  1351. only Naaman.

  1352. Now,

  1353. why would

  1354. this so

  1355. infuriate

  1356. the people

  1357. of Nazareth?

  1358. Well,

  1359. Jesus was

  1360. living in

  1361. a historical

  1362. time period

  1363. when many

  1364. people in

  1365. Israel were

  1366. fervently

  1367. hoping for

  1368. a restoration

  1369. of their

  1370. nation under

  1371. God.

  1372. Many people

  1373. were fed up

  1374. with the

  1375. powerful

  1376. pagan

  1377. Roman

  1378. elites,

  1379. the cultural

  1380. progressives

  1381. of the

  1382. day,

  1383. who were

  1384. gradually,

  1385. sometimes

  1386. violently

  1387. imposing

  1388. their will

  1389. on the

  1390. native

  1391. Israelites

  1392. and

  1393. offending

  1394. against

  1395. their

  1396. religious

  1397. and

  1398. cultural

  1399. traditions.

  1400. And so

  1401. various

  1402. popular

  1403. movements

  1404. had sprung

  1405. up

  1406. in response.

  1407. Some

  1408. were violent,

  1409. the zealots.

  1410. Some

  1411. were separatist,

  1412. the Essenes,

  1413. who lived

  1414. on top of a

  1415. cliff.

  1416. Some

  1417. were focused

  1418. on maintaining

  1419. cultural

  1420. boundaries against

  1421. foreign influence,

  1422. the Pharisees.

  1423. they were

  1424. all along

  1425. the lines

  1426. of,

  1427. make Israel

  1428. great again.

  1429. And many

  1430. in Jesus'

  1431. hometown

  1432. would have

  1433. been sympathetic

  1434. to such

  1435. movements.

  1436. And Jesus

  1437. had the

  1438. nerve

  1439. in that

  1440. context

  1441. to remind

  1442. them

  1443. that two

  1444. of the

  1445. greatest

  1446. prophets

  1447. of Israel,

  1448. whom they

  1449. all recognized,

  1450. had been

  1451. sent by God

  1452. to bless

  1453. not only

  1454. Israelites,

  1455. but also

  1456. foreign

  1457. outsiders,

  1458. even those

  1459. who were

  1460. natural

  1461. enemies

  1462. of God's

  1463. people.

  1464. And of

  1465. course,

  1466. the implication

  1467. is that

  1468. Jesus'

  1469. ministry

  1470. would not

  1471. just be

  1472. about

  1473. restoring

  1474. Israel

  1475. to

  1476. greatness,

  1477. but fulfilling

  1478. God's

  1479. promise to

  1480. Abraham,

  1481. in you

  1482. all the

  1483. nations of

  1484. the earth

  1485. will be

  1486. blessed.

  1487. You see,

  1488. Jesus didn't

  1489. completely buy

  1490. into the

  1491. agenda of

  1492. any of

  1493. the political

  1494. parties of

  1495. his day.

  1496. And sometimes

  1497. that made

  1498. some people

  1499. really mad.

  1500. Jesus didn't

  1501. side with

  1502. the pagan

  1503. Roman elites

  1504. who promised

  1505. peace and

  1506. security under

  1507. their rule.

  1508. Jesus warned,

  1509. don't believe

  1510. their promises.

  1511. They always

  1512. come at a

  1513. high cost

  1514. and they

  1515. won't last.

  1516. It's in me

  1517. that you'll

  1518. find true

  1519. liberation

  1520. and genuine

  1521. peace and

  1522. lasting hope.

  1523. It's my

  1524. kingdom that

  1525. will last

  1526. forever,

  1527. not theirs.

  1528. And yet

  1529. he didn't

  1530. scorn the

  1531. pagan

  1532. progressive

  1533. elites.

  1534. He healed

  1535. the son

  1536. of a

  1537. Roman

  1538. centurion.

  1539. He called

  1540. tax collectors

  1541. who were

  1542. back then

  1543. corrupt

  1544. government

  1545. employees

  1546. to be

  1547. his

  1548. disciples.

  1549. But neither

  1550. did Jesus

  1551. jump on

  1552. the popular

  1553. bandwagons

  1554. which promised

  1555. to restore

  1556. the kingdom

  1557. to Israel.

  1558. As we see

  1559. right here,

  1560. he challenged

  1561. their excessively

  1562. nationalistic

  1563. focus.

  1564. He said

  1565. God's plans

  1566. are bigger

  1567. and sometimes

  1568. different than

  1569. yours.

  1570. But he didn't

  1571. write them

  1572. off either.

  1573. He came to

  1574. Nazareth

  1575. even though the

  1576. majority of

  1577. people there

  1578. would reject

  1579. him.

  1580. He spent

  1581. time with

  1582. Pharisees.

  1583. And Jesus

  1584. called his

  1585. disciples from

  1586. the whole

  1587. range of

  1588. political parties

  1589. all the way

  1590. from Simon

  1591. the Zealot.

  1592. The Zealots

  1593. were the

  1594. violent

  1595. revolution group

  1596. drive out

  1597. the Romans

  1598. to Matthew

  1599. the tax

  1600. collector,

  1601. the Roman

  1602. government

  1603. employee.

  1604. I mean,

  1605. just imagine

  1606. the political

  1607. conversations

  1608. among Jesus'

  1609. twelve

  1610. disciples.

  1611. So here's

  1612. the point.

  1613. If within

  1614. the church

  1615. we're not

  1616. all on the

  1617. same page

  1618. about politics

  1619. but we're

  1620. united in

  1621. our allegiance

  1622. to Jesus

  1623. Christ,

  1624. I think

  1625. that's actually

  1626. a good

  1627. sign.

  1628. Because our

  1629. calling as

  1630. Jesus'

  1631. disciples is

  1632. first and

  1633. foremost

  1634. to the

  1635. lordship of

  1636. Christ.

  1637. And secondly

  1638. to carefully

  1639. work out

  1640. the implications

  1641. of that

  1642. lordship

  1643. over all

  1644. things together

  1645. in politics

  1646. and everywhere

  1647. else.

  1648. Jesus was

  1649. willing to

  1650. challenge

  1651. the comfortable

  1652. in his

  1653. hometown of

  1654. Nazareth.

  1655. And through

  1656. his word

  1657. and his

  1658. spirit he

  1659. continues to

  1660. challenge us

  1661. today.

  1662. So let me

  1663. conclude this

  1664. section with

  1665. three challenges

  1666. to us.

  1667. Number one,

  1668. a warning.

  1669. thing.

  1670. And this is

  1671. in the words

  1672. of James

  1673. Edwards,

  1674. commentator

  1675. on this

  1676. passage.

  1677. He said,

  1678. the greatest

  1679. danger to

  1680. the way

  1681. of God

  1682. in this

  1683. world is

  1684. posed by

  1685. those who

  1686. are closest

  1687. to it.

  1688. You see,

  1689. what should

  1690. surprise and

  1691. disturb us

  1692. in this

  1693. passage is

  1694. not just

  1695. that some

  1696. people reject

  1697. Jesus.

  1698. there's

  1699. always some

  1700. people who

  1701. reject Jesus.

  1702. But look at

  1703. who it is

  1704. that rejects

  1705. him here.

  1706. It's the

  1707. people who

  1708. would have

  1709. known him

  1710. best.

  1711. It's the

  1712. people who

  1713. grew up

  1714. around him.

  1715. The people

  1716. in his

  1717. hometown.

  1718. The people

  1719. who had been

  1720. around him

  1721. longer than

  1722. anyone else.

  1723. And later

  1724. on, who

  1725. would betray

  1726. Jesus?

  1727. Not a

  1728. Roman government

  1729. official.

  1730. but one of

  1731. his close

  1732. associates.

  1733. One of

  1734. his 12

  1735. disciples.

  1736. The one

  1737. whom he

  1738. had entrusted

  1739. to keep

  1740. track of

  1741. their

  1742. finances.

  1743. And where

  1744. was Jesus

  1745. crucified?

  1746. Not in

  1747. pagan Rome,

  1748. but in

  1749. the holy

  1750. city,

  1751. Jerusalem.

  1752. The warning

  1753. is this.

  1754. You can

  1755. be so

  1756. close to

  1757. Jesus,

  1758. but at

  1759. the same

  1760. time,

  1761. so far

  1762. away.

  1763. You can

  1764. be very

  1765. involved

  1766. in

  1767. church

  1768. activities.

  1769. You can

  1770. spend

  1771. lots of

  1772. social

  1773. time with

  1774. other

  1775. Christians.

  1776. You can

  1777. be very

  1778. knowledgeable

  1779. about

  1780. Christian

  1781. theology

  1782. and

  1783. church

  1784. polity.

  1785. But is

  1786. your gaze

  1787. fixed on

  1788. the person

  1789. of Jesus

  1790. himself?

  1791. all the

  1792. spiritual

  1793. benefits

  1794. that Christ

  1795. promises

  1796. are found

  1797. in union

  1798. with him

  1799. and nowhere

  1800. else.

  1801. Jesus

  1802. said,

  1803. abide in

  1804. me.

  1805. Keep

  1806. your gaze

  1807. fixed on

  1808. him.

  1809. Second

  1810. challenge.

  1811. The good

  1812. news that

  1813. Jesus came

  1814. to bring

  1815. is not

  1816. just for

  1817. people like

  1818. you and

  1819. people who

  1820. you like.

  1821. It is also

  1822. for people

  1823. unlike you

  1824. and people

  1825. who don't

  1826. like you.

  1827. That's the

  1828. challenge of

  1829. verse 25 to

  1830. 27.

  1831. Jesus is

  1832. saying,

  1833. sometimes

  1834. God,

  1835. in his

  1836. unfathomable

  1837. kindness,

  1838. chooses to

  1839. bless someone

  1840. else in a

  1841. way that he

  1842. has not yet

  1843. blessed you.

  1844. that doesn't

  1845. mean he's

  1846. never going

  1847. to bless

  1848. you.

  1849. It doesn't

  1850. mean he's

  1851. forever

  1852. cast you

  1853. off.

  1854. But he

  1855. might choose

  1856. to bless

  1857. someone that

  1858. you don't

  1859. like.

  1860. Or someone

  1861. who doesn't

  1862. like you.

  1863. Or someone

  1864. who clearly

  1865. doesn't

  1866. deserve

  1867. his blessing

  1868. in some

  1869. particular

  1870. way.

  1871. Maybe God

  1872. gives someone

  1873. else a

  1874. job.

  1875. Or a

  1876. house.

  1877. Or a

  1878. spouse.

  1879. child.

  1880. Or good

  1881. health.

  1882. Or close

  1883. community.

  1884. Maybe that's

  1885. something that

  1886. you desperately

  1887. long for.

  1888. And don't

  1889. yet have.

  1890. And Jesus

  1891. says,

  1892. you have no

  1893. right to

  1894. resent God

  1895. for that.

  1896. Because God

  1897. didn't have to

  1898. give you any

  1899. blessings at all

  1900. in the first

  1901. place.

  1902. He will show

  1903. mercy on whom

  1904. he will show

  1905. mercy.

  1906. Don't be

  1907. envious because

  1908. he's generous.

  1909. Have you

  1910. ever looked at

  1911. someone else

  1912. and felt

  1913. on the

  1914. inside?

  1915. No.

  1916. Not

  1917. them.

  1918. No.

  1919. I don't

  1920. want them

  1921. to receive

  1922. mercy and

  1923. forgiveness in

  1924. a second

  1925. chance.

  1926. They don't

  1927. deserve it.

  1928. They deserve

  1929. to be

  1930. punished.

  1931. judged.

  1932. And Jesus

  1933. says, don't

  1934. you remember

  1935. you did

  1936. too.

  1937. Those who've

  1938. been forgiven

  1939. much will

  1940. love much.

  1941. Those who've

  1942. been forgiven

  1943. little will

  1944. love little.

  1945. Third

  1946. challenge.

  1947. If Jesus

  1948. came to

  1949. proclaim good

  1950. news to

  1951. the poor,

  1952. the captive,

  1953. the blind,

  1954. the oppressed,

  1955. both physically

  1956. and spiritually,

  1957. then we as

  1958. spirit-filled

  1959. followers of

  1960. Jesus are to

  1961. join in that

  1962. mission.

  1963. In chapter

  1964. nine, Jesus

  1965. will send out

  1966. his disciples

  1967. to heal and

  1968. to proclaim

  1969. the kingdom

  1970. of God.

  1971. In the book

  1972. of Acts, we

  1973. see the

  1974. disciples carrying

  1975. out that

  1976. mission and

  1977. going into

  1978. the nations

  1979. of the

  1980. world.

  1981. Does this

  1982. mission of

  1983. Jesus

  1984. characterize us?

  1985. Are we

  1986. actually

  1987. participating

  1988. in what

  1989. Jesus describes

  1990. in verse

  1991. 18 and

  1992. 19?

  1993. Or are we

  1994. staying in

  1995. our comfortable

  1996. zones?

  1997. And living

  1998. out of

  1999. fear and

  2000. making excuses?

  2001. it is

  2002. often costly

  2003. and uncomfortable

  2004. and sometimes

  2005. even dangerous

  2006. to do what

  2007. Jesus describes

  2008. in verses

  2009. 18 and

  2010. 19.

  2011. Are we

  2012. willing to

  2013. make sacrifices

  2014. to follow

  2015. Jesus in

  2016. those ways,

  2017. even if other

  2018. Christians around

  2019. us don't seem

  2020. to be making

  2021. the same

  2022. sacrifices?

  2023. In John

  2024. 21,

  2025. when Jesus

  2026. called Peter

  2027. to follow him

  2028. in caring

  2029. for his

  2030. sheep.

  2031. And when

  2032. Jesus said

  2033. to Peter,

  2034. one day,

  2035. I'm actually

  2036. going to call

  2037. you to lay

  2038. down your

  2039. life for

  2040. me.

  2041. Peter's

  2042. first response

  2043. was to turn

  2044. and look at

  2045. another

  2046. disciple and

  2047. say,

  2048. Lord,

  2049. what about

  2050. him?

  2051. And Jesus

  2052. said,

  2053. what does

  2054. that matter

  2055. to you?

  2056. You must

  2057. follow me.

  2058. Jesus

  2059. comforts the

  2060. afflicted

  2061. and he

  2062. challenges

  2063. the comfortable.

  2064. And Luke

  2065. puts this

  2066. story at

  2067. the beginning

  2068. of his

  2069. account of

  2070. Jesus'

  2071. public

  2072. ministry

  2073. because it

  2074. sets the

  2075. pattern for

  2076. all that

  2077. is to

  2078. come.

  2079. In the

  2080. coming weeks

  2081. we'll see

  2082. Jesus

  2083. comforting

  2084. the

  2085. afflicted,

  2086. healing

  2087. the sick,

  2088. cleansing

  2089. lepers,

  2090. driving out

  2091. demons,

  2092. proclaiming

  2093. the good

  2094. news,

  2095. and we'll

  2096. see Jesus

  2097. challenging

  2098. the comfortable

  2099. warning,

  2100. and even

  2101. provoking

  2102. the proud

  2103. and complacent.

  2104. That's not

  2105. all.

  2106. The end

  2107. of this

  2108. story

  2109. gives us

  2110. a hint

  2111. of how

  2112. Luke's

  2113. gospel

  2114. and how

  2115. Jesus'

  2116. life is

  2117. going to

  2118. end.

  2119. How does

  2120. this story

  2121. end?

  2122. Verse 28

  2123. to 30.

  2124. The

  2125. townspeople

  2126. are filled

  2127. with wrath.

  2128. They drive

  2129. him out of

  2130. town.

  2131. They try

  2132. to throw

  2133. him off

  2134. a cliff.

  2135. It doesn't

  2136. work this

  2137. time.

  2138. But later

  2139. on when he

  2140. finally arrives

  2141. in Jerusalem,

  2142. a crowd

  2143. that had

  2144. initially

  2145. praised him

  2146. and hailed

  2147. him as

  2148. the king

  2149. would rise

  2150. up against

  2151. him and

  2152. drive him

  2153. out of

  2154. town and

  2155. take him

  2156. to a top

  2157. of a hill

  2158. and nail

  2159. him to a

  2160. cross.

  2161. And on that

  2162. day, it would

  2163. seem like all

  2164. was lost

  2165. and that Jesus'

  2166. mission had

  2167. failed.

  2168. world.

  2169. But it

  2170. wasn't.

  2171. And it

  2172. didn't.

  2173. Because three

  2174. days later,

  2175. he got up

  2176. out of the

  2177. tomb and

  2178. walked out

  2179. and appeared

  2180. to his

  2181. astonished

  2182. disciples and

  2183. sent them to

  2184. be his

  2185. spirit-filled

  2186. ambassadors in

  2187. the world and

  2188. he's still

  2189. building his

  2190. kingdom today.

  2191. day.

  2192. This morning's

  2193. passage ends

  2194. in verse 30

  2195. with a seemingly

  2196. effortless display

  2197. of Jesus'

  2198. sovereignty.

  2199. Despite

  2200. opposition,

  2201. he walked

  2202. right through

  2203. the crowd

  2204. and went on

  2205. his way.

  2206. And isn't

  2207. that what he

  2208. does in the

  2209. end?

  2210. He walks

  2211. right through

  2212. death and

  2213. comes out of

  2214. the grave and

  2215. goes on his

  2216. way,

  2217. bringing good

  2218. news to the

  2219. poor and

  2220. comfort for

  2221. the broken

  2222. hearted and

  2223. freedom for

  2224. the captives and

  2225. opening eyes

  2226. that are blind

  2227. and forgiving

  2228. and setting

  2229. free the

  2230. oppressed and

  2231. sending the

  2232. favor of God

  2233. upon all who

  2234. turn to him.

  2235. This is our

  2236. king.

  2237. Let us

  2238. pray.

  2239. Jesus, we

  2240. praise you.

  2241. Spirit-filled

  2242. servant of the

  2243. Lord, we

  2244. praise you for

  2245. the message of

  2246. mercy and

  2247. healing and

  2248. deliverance that

  2249. you come to

  2250. us with.

  2251. faith.

  2252. We pray that

  2253. we would heed

  2254. your words of

  2255. challenge and

  2256. warning, that

  2257. those would be

  2258. used in our

  2259. lives, that

  2260. our hearts

  2261. would not be

  2262. hardened, but

  2263. Lord, that you

  2264. would break us

  2265. open to you.

  2266. Humble us,

  2267. show us that

  2268. we are

  2269. spiritually poor

  2270. and blind and

  2271. captive and

  2272. oppressed apart

  2273. from you.

  2274. Lord, as your

  2275. spirit works within

  2276. us, would you

  2277. continue to

  2278. transform us into

  2279. your image, that

  2280. we might carry

  2281. this message to

  2282. all those who

  2283. you put in our

  2284. path.

  2285. we pray these

  2286. things in your

  2287. name.

  2288. Amen.
