  9. As we come to God's word together, let's pray.

  10. Father, we ask that you would

  11. help us this morning

  12. to

  13. not just gather information,

  14. about

  15. the Bible, or even just

  16. information about you,

  17. but as we come now before

  18. your word, we pray that we would come to know you

  19. truly and better.

  20. That your Holy Spirit would be

  21. poured out this morning so that we might

  22. see you in the face of Jesus Christ

  23. and that

  24. we might know how deep

  25. and how

  26. certain

  27. and how transformative

  28. is your love for us.

  29. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  30. Amen.

  31. Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4:31–44

  32. verses 31 through 44.

  33. And he, that is Jesus,

  34. went down to Capernaum,

  35. a city of Galilee.

  36. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath

  37. and they were astonished at his teaching

  38. for his word

  39. possessed authority.

  40. And in the synagogue,

  41. there was a man who had the spirit

  42. of an unclean demon

  43. and he cried out with a loud voice,

  44. Ha!

  45. What have you to do with us,

  46. Jesus of Nazareth?

  47. Have you come to destroy us?

  48. I know who you are,

  49. the Holy One of God.

  50. But Jesus rebuked him,

  51. saying,

  52. Be silent

  53. and come out of him.

  54. And when the demon had thrown him down

  55. in their midst,

  56. he came out of him,

  57. having done him no harm.

  58. And they were all amazed

  59. and said to one another,

  60. What is this word?

  61. For with authority and power

  62. he commands the unclean spirits

  63. and they come out.

  64. And reports about him

  65. went out into every place

  66. in the surrounding region.

  67. And he arose

  68. and left the synagogue

  69. and entered Simon's house.

  70. Now Simon's mother-in-law

  71. was ill with a high fever

  72. and they appealed to him

  73. on her behalf.

  74. And he stood over her

  75. and rebuked the fever

  76. and it left her

  77. and immediately

  78. she rose

  79. and began to serve them.

  80. Now when the sun

  81. was setting,

  82. all those who had any

  83. who were sick

  84. with various diseases

  85. brought them to him

  86. and he laid his hands

  87. on every one of them

  88. and healed them.

  89. And demons also came out

  90. of many crying,

  91. You are the Son of God.

  92. But he rebuked them

  93. and would not allow them

  94. to speak

  95. because they knew

  96. that he was the Christ.

  97. And when it was day,

  98. he departed

  99. and went into a desolate place.

  100. And the people sought him

  101. and came to him

  102. and would have kept him

  103. from leaving them

  104. but he said to them,

  105. I must preach

  106. the good news

  107. of the kingdom of God

  108. to other towns as well

  109. for I was sent

  110. for this purpose.

  111. And he was preaching

  112. in the synagogues

  113. of Judea.

  114. So this winter

  115. and spring,

  116. we are studying

  117. the first part

  118. of the Gospel of Luke,

  119. Jesus' ministry

  120. in Galilee.

  121. And we're doing that

  122. because it's good,

  123. you know,

  124. in our life

  125. as a church

  126. to come back

  127. continually

  128. to the center

  129. of what it's all about.

  130. Because

  131. what Christianity

  132. is all about

  133. is not ultimately,

  134. what the church

  135. is all about

  136. is not ultimately

  137. a set of ideas

  138. or a code of ethics

  139. though it certainly

  140. implies those things.

  141. Ultimately,

  142. Christianity

  143. is about a person.

  144. It's about

  145. the historical

  146. person

  147. of Jesus Christ.

  148. So if you're

  149. not a Christian,

  150. we hope this series

  151. in some ways

  152. gives you a front row seat

  153. to the main event.

  154. Here we go.

  155. Here is what it's all about.

  156. What do you make

  157. of Jesus Christ?

  158. And if you're here

  159. and you are a Christian,

  160. honestly,

  161. we hope that this series

  162. sparks a season

  163. of renewal

  164. for you.

  165. Because you see,

  166. spiritually in the Christian life,

  167. spirituality in the Christian life

  168. really boils down

  169. to beholding Christ.

  170. To adoring him,

  171. to worshiping him,

  172. to having our hearts

  173. drawn to intimacy

  174. with him together.

  175. And through that work

  176. of the Holy Spirit,

  177. we're changed

  178. more and more

  179. to be like him.

  180. So that's why

  181. we're in Luke

  182. in this season.

  183. And our text this morning

  184. we see right away

  185. is about Jesus'

  186. authority.

  187. Verse 32,

  188. they were astonished

  189. at his teaching

  190. because his word

  191. possessed what?

  192. Authority.

  193. And then in verse 36,

  194. what is this word

  195. for with authority

  196. and power

  197. he commands

  198. the unclean spirits

  199. and they come out?

  200. We see the same theme

  201. repeated when Luke

  202. repeats that word

  203. rebuke

  204. in this passage.

  205. Did you catch that?

  206. In verse 35,

  207. Jesus does what?

  208. He rebukes

  209. the unclean spirit.

  210. And then in verse 39,

  211. he rebukes

  212. the high fever

  213. of Simon's mother-in-law.

  214. Then in verse 41,

  215. he rebukes

  216. even more

  217. oppressive evil forces.

  218. the rebuke here

  219. is Jesus'

  220. authoritative

  221. commanding word.

  222. So in our passage,

  223. Luke wants us

  224. to come face-to-face

  225. with Jesus'

  226. authority.

  227. Which maybe starts

  228. to challenge

  229. what we think

  230. we know about Jesus.

  231. And honestly,

  232. what we're comfortable with.

  233. I think most of us

  234. are probably comfortable

  235. with the idea of

  236. Jesus,

  237. the great moral example.

  238. He lived a good life

  239. and so should you.

  240. Or we're comfortable

  241. with Jesus,

  242. the encourager,

  243. the motivator,

  244. the one who gets behind me

  245. and helps me along the way,

  246. whatever I happen to choose

  247. my life path to be.

  248. Those ideas about Jesus,

  249. we're okay with them

  250. and there's some truth

  251. in each of them.

  252. But you know,

  253. according to the earliest

  254. witnesses to the life

  255. of Jesus that we have

  256. and the gospel of Luke

  257. is one of those,

  258. that's not primarily

  259. the picture that we get

  260. of Jesus.

  261. It's not Jesus

  262. the moral example.

  263. It's not Jesus

  264. the great motivator.

  265. But Jesus,

  266. the utterly authoritative one.

  267. And I think we see

  268. at least three things

  269. about Jesus' authority

  270. in our text this morning

  271. that we're going to walk through.

  272. The first thing is

  273. we see the threat

  274. of Jesus' authority.

  275. Jesus' authority

  276. threatens us.

  277. I think if we're honest,

  278. we don't really like

  279. the idea of authority.

  280. I've used the word authority

  281. about a hundred times

  282. already in this sermon

  283. and we're all sort of feeling

  284. a little uncomfortable,

  285. aren't we?

  286. Come on,

  287. we're all children

  288. of the enlightenment,

  289. children of the modern era,

  290. and for us,

  291. authority is nearly

  292. always viewed suspiciously.

  293. And you know,

  294. perhaps there's some

  295. or maybe a lot

  296. of justification for that.

  297. When people in positions

  298. of power abuse

  299. their authority,

  300. it's only natural

  301. to start to think

  302. that authority

  303. is a bad thing

  304. or at least

  305. a dangerous thing,

  306. a thing that needs

  307. to be sort of

  308. carefully contained

  309. like a hazardous substance.

  310. At best,

  311. we only want someone

  312. to have authority

  313. in our lives

  314. if we grant it to them

  315. and if it has

  316. very defined boundaries.

  317. I join a sports team

  318. or I join a theater group

  319. or I take a new job

  320. and I implicitly

  321. sort of grant

  322. that coach

  323. or that director

  324. or that boss

  325. some degree of authority

  326. in my life.

  327. They get to call the plays,

  328. they get to make

  329. the artistic decisions,

  330. they get to lead the company,

  331. but it's all very defined,

  332. all very compartmentalized.

  333. At the end of the day,

  334. I still keep my autonomy

  335. and I still have authority

  336. over my life.

  337. And so when Jesus arrives

  338. before us in this text

  339. as one with authority,

  340. with utter authority,

  341. with complete authority,

  342. such that what he says goes,

  343. I mean, come on,

  344. if we're honest,

  345. we don't really like it.

  346. Deep down, I think,

  347. we might even hate it.

  348. We can handle a moral example

  349. and we can handle a motivator,

  350. but not an authority.

  351. Have you thought about

  352. why that is?

  353. Why is the prospect

  354. of Jesus' complete authority

  355. such a threat to us?

  356. Why does it repel us so often?

  357. Well, deep down,

  358. I think it's because

  359. we think it will destroy us.

  360. What have you to do with us,

  361. Jesus of Nazareth?

  362. Have you come to destroy us?

  363. How many of us,

  364. maybe not in the same language,

  365. have thought the same thing?

  366. If I were to let Jesus' authority

  367. shape my entire life,

  368. if I were to let him

  369. have complete sway over me,

  370. if I made him my Lord,

  371. then the only possible outcome

  372. that I can envision

  373. in that scenario

  374. is that it would destroy me.

  375. My happiness,

  376. my joy,

  377. my freedom.

  378. And you know,

  379. this threat of his authority

  380. goes deeper

  381. than just having some

  382. new inconvenient things

  383. that I'd have to start doing

  384. or some sort of old

  385. things I like,

  386. I'd have to stop doing those.

  387. You know,

  388. it's not like,

  389. well,

  390. now I'd have to start

  391. going to church

  392. and I'd have to stop

  393. posting snarky comments

  394. on Facebook.

  395. It goes deeper than that,

  396. doesn't it?

  397. It gets down to our identity.

  398. You sense,

  399. you and I sense

  400. that there's something

  401. you have to let go of

  402. at a deep

  403. sort of subterranean level

  404. if Jesus is going to have

  405. this sort of authority

  406. in your life.

  407. And that's scary

  408. because up till now,

  409. there's a particular way

  410. that you've defined yourself.

  411. This is who I really am

  412. or this

  413. or this,

  414. whatever it is.

  415. But now,

  416. you have to belong to him.

  417. He has to be

  418. the Lord of your life.

  419. He's the defining thing now.

  420. I wonder how many

  421. of our intellectual objections

  422. to Christianity

  423. really at bottom

  424. are about this.

  425. Now,

  426. there's nothing wrong

  427. with questions

  428. and there's nothing wrong

  429. with honest doubts.

  430. If Christianity,

  431. after all,

  432. claims to be true,

  433. then we have to

  434. at some level

  435. ask questions

  436. and raise our doubts

  437. and wrestle with them.

  438. And here at Trinity,

  439. we want to be the kind of place

  440. where we ask those questions

  441. and wrestle with those doubts together.

  442. We want to welcome

  443. that sort of exploration.

  444. But at some point,

  445. there comes a moment

  446. when the questions before us

  447. as we consider Christianity

  448. stop being intellectual

  449. and they start being personal.

  450. Am I willing to stop

  451. being the Lord of my own life

  452. and let Jesus be Lord?

  453. And we have to ask ourselves,

  454. am I willing

  455. to be brutally honest

  456. with my own doubts

  457. to the point

  458. where I can admit

  459. that some of my intellectual questions

  460. might be a smokescreen,

  461. a way of avoiding

  462. the real question

  463. of whether or not

  464. I can embrace

  465. Jesus' authority over me?

  466. In other words,

  467. friends,

  468. can you be honest enough

  469. with yourself

  470. to acknowledge

  471. when deep down

  472. what's keeping you

  473. from Christianity

  474. is that you're afraid,

  475. afraid that submitting

  476. to his authority

  477. will simply destroy you.

  478. But you know,

  479. this isn't just an issue

  480. for those of us

  481. who are considering Christianity.

  482. It's an issue

  483. for those of us

  484. who are already Christians too.

  485. Because there will always

  486. be remaining sin

  487. in our lives.

  488. We will constantly

  489. encounter times

  490. when we don't want

  491. to live our lives

  492. under Jesus' authority.

  493. We'll come up against

  494. some clear word

  495. in Scripture

  496. and it will run

  497. counter to our desires

  498. or our plans

  499. or it will run

  500. against the grain

  501. of our culture

  502. and strike us

  503. as awkward

  504. or impossible even

  505. and we'll be tempted

  506. in that moment

  507. to sort of explain

  508. those passages

  509. of Scripture away

  510. or we'll come up

  511. with a whole list

  512. of reasons

  513. why my circumstances

  514. just make it too hard

  515. or too demanding

  516. or too costly

  517. to follow what he says

  518. and obey him.

  519. And the pattern

  520. is the same.

  521. Don't you see?

  522. Even in our hearts.

  523. Even in the hearts

  524. of believers

  525. there's still the voice

  526. that says

  527. have you come

  528. to destroy us?

  529. Which is why

  530. we all need to see

  531. the rest

  532. of what Luke

  533. shows us here.

  534. The second point

  535. we see

  536. and what Luke

  537. wants us ultimately

  538. to see about

  539. Jesus' authority here

  540. is that it doesn't

  541. just threaten us.

  542. Ultimately

  543. it liberates us.

  544. Jesus' authority

  545. sets us free.

  546. You see this evil spirit

  547. in verse 34

  548. he sort of throws down

  549. a challenge to Jesus

  550. doesn't he?

  551. He says

  552. have you come

  553. to destroy us?

  554. Now

  555. perhaps the word

  556. us there

  557. is referring to

  558. just sort of

  559. evil spirits

  560. in general.

  561. But the us

  562. could also be referring

  563. to the evil spirit

  564. and the man

  565. who is afflicted

  566. both of them together.

  567. In other words

  568. this evil spirit

  569. is saying to Jesus

  570. you take me down

  571. he goes with me

  572. what are you going

  573. to do to us

  574. Jesus?

  575. Have you come

  576. to destroy us?

  577. But what happens?

  578. At the word

  579. of Jesus'

  580. authoritative

  581. rebuke

  582. the evil spirit

  583. comes out

  584. of the man

  585. and as Luke

  586. says at the end

  587. of verse 35

  588. having done him

  589. no harm.

  590. you see

  591. the exercise

  592. of this

  593. total authority

  594. that Jesus has

  595. doesn't spell

  596. this man's

  597. destruction

  598. it ushers in

  599. this man's

  600. liberation

  601. it's his release.

  602. The same is true

  603. of Simon's

  604. mother-in-law

  605. but this time

  606. the destructive

  607. force isn't

  608. spiritual

  609. it's physical

  610. and with a word

  611. Jesus frees

  612. this woman

  613. from a life

  614. threatening illness

  615. she's unbound

  616. and immediately

  617. Luke says

  618. she can rise

  619. and minister.

  620. Do you see

  621. the picture

  622. that's emerging

  623. here?

  624. As humans

  625. we're threatened

  626. on every side

  627. by forces

  628. greater than us

  629. by forces

  630. that threaten

  631. to undo us

  632. do we not

  633. feel that?

  634. Their interior

  635. and their exterior

  636. their spiritual

  637. and their physical

  638. but here

  639. now

  640. at last

  641. a greater

  642. authority

  643. has arrived

  644. and this

  645. authority

  646. Jesus himself

  647. sets us free.

  648. Now you have

  649. to see

  650. that the

  651. liberation

  652. this passage

  653. depicts

  654. challenges

  655. both the

  656. skeptical

  657. mindset

  658. and the

  659. traditional

  660. mindset.

  661. What do I

  662. mean?

  663. Well it's

  664. easy to see

  665. how this

  666. passage is a

  667. bit of a

  668. challenge to

  669. the skeptic

  670. isn't it?

  671. I mean there's

  672. a whole lot

  673. of talk about

  674. demons here.

  675. Demons

  676. really?

  677. Maybe some

  678. of you are

  679. thinking

  680. isn't this

  681. the 21st

  682. century?

  683. Can we

  684. really believe

  685. in evil

  686. spirits

  687. anymore?

  688. Wasn't that

  689. just sort of

  690. a pre-modern

  691. way of

  692. talking about

  693. mental

  694. illness?

  695. I get it.

  696. To many

  697. of us

  698. in the

  699. west

  700. belief

  701. in evil

  702. spirits

  703. seems

  704. completely

  705. irrational

  706. and maybe

  707. even a

  708. little

  709. primitive.

  710. But actually

  711. you know

  712. I would

  713. submit to

  714. you that

  715. it

  716. needn't

  717. be

  718. either.

  719. And it

  720. actually

  721. isn't

  722. either.

  723. On the

  724. one hand

  725. it's not

  726. necessarily

  727. irrational

  728. if there's

  729. such a

  730. thing as

  731. a God

  732. after all.

  733. If God

  734. exists

  735. some

  736. personal

  737. spiritual

  738. good

  739. then it's

  740. not

  741. irrational

  742. to think

  743. that there

  744. just might

  745. be

  746. personal

  747. spiritual

  748. evil

  749. in the

  750. world.

  751. And on

  752. the other

  753. hand it's

  754. not necessarily

  755. a primitive

  756. belief

  757. either.

  758. Take a look

  759. very closely

  760. at this

  761. passage.

  762. Luke

  763. in this

  764. text is

  765. distinguishing

  766. quite

  767. carefully

  768. and quite

  769. deliberately

  770. between

  771. physical

  772. illness

  773. and

  774. demonic

  775. affliction.

  776. He's

  777. not

  778. conflating

  779. the two.

  780. And the

  781. New Testament

  782. never does.

  783. In fact

  784. the Bible

  785. as a whole

  786. would lead

  787. us to

  788. have

  789. not a

  790. primitive

  791. but

  792. actually

  793. quite

  794. robust

  795. and

  796. sophisticated

  797. view

  798. of the

  799. world

  800. and

  801. ourselves.

  802. Because it

  803. acknowledges

  804. that we're

  805. physical

  806. and emotional

  807. and social

  808. and psychological

  809. and also

  810. spiritual

  811. beings.

  812. That all

  813. of these

  814. things form

  815. a very

  816. complex

  817. view

  818. a very

  819. robust

  820. view

  821. of what

  822. reality

  823. is

  824. and the

  825. Bible

  826. doesn't

  827. allow us

  828. to sort

  829. of limit

  830. or narrow

  831. or oversimplify

  832. the reality

  833. in which

  834. we live.

  835. So yes

  836. this passage

  837. challenges

  838. our

  839. skeptical

  840. mindset

  841. but you

  842. know

  843. it also

  844. challenges

  845. our

  846. traditional

  847. our

  848. conservative

  849. mindset.

  850. How so?

  851. Well

  852. it's showing

  853. us here

  854. that the

  855. redemption

  856. that Christ

  857. brings

  858. isn't

  859. just

  860. spiritual

  861. but it's

  862. physical

  863. as well.

  864. Christ

  865. hasn't

  866. just come

  867. to save

  868. our souls

  869. and whisk

  870. us away.

  871. He's

  872. come to

  873. heal

  874. the

  875. material

  876. world

  877. as well.

  878. So if

  879. we're

  880. followers

  881. of Jesus

  882. we can't

  883. retreat

  884. from caring

  885. about

  886. physical

  887. needs.

  888. Whether

  889. it's

  890. illness

  891. and disease

  892. or

  893. poverty

  894. or racial

  895. injustice

  896. or the

  897. well-being

  898. of the

  899. environment

  900. Christ

  901. has come

  902. to set

  903. all

  904. creation

  905. free

  906. one day

  907. from

  908. its

  909. bondage

  910. to

  911. decay

  912. and disease

  913. and death

  914. and those

  915. who

  916. follow

  917. him

  918. will

  919. care

  920. about

  921. seeking

  922. peace

  923. and justice

  924. and healing

  925. here and

  926. now.

  927. Challenges

  928. both

  929. sides.

  930. You see

  931. what's going

  932. on in this

  933. passage is

  934. that in

  935. these mighty

  936. works of

  937. Jesus'

  938. authority

  939. we see

  940. signs

  941. of what

  942. he will

  943. do

  944. over all

  945. the

  946. earth

  947. one day.

  948. In the

  949. Old Testament

  950. God promised

  951. to put an

  952. end to

  953. evil and

  954. death

  955. and sickness

  956. and suffering.

  957. And here

  958. in Jesus'

  959. ministry

  960. in the

  961. first

  962. century

  963. that

  964. promise

  965. came

  966. forward

  967. breaking

  968. into

  969. history.

  970. It's as if

  971. God's future

  972. for a moment

  973. came flashing

  974. forward like

  975. a streak

  976. of lightning

  977. ripping

  978. open the

  979. old world

  980. so that we

  981. could see

  982. what it

  983. would be

  984. like when

  985. God

  986. one day

  987. finally

  988. liberates

  989. the whole

  990. creation

  991. from

  992. everything

  993. that threatens

  994. to undo

  995. us.

  996. Here's a

  997. glimpse of

  998. it.

  999. In other

  1000. words,

  1001. in Jesus,

  1002. the kingdom

  1003. of God,

  1004. God's

  1005. coming reign

  1006. of peace

  1007. and justice

  1008. was showing

  1009. up ahead

  1010. of time.

  1011. It was

  1012. showing up

  1013. ahead of

  1014. time because

  1015. Jesus,

  1016. the authoritative

  1017. one,

  1018. the king

  1019. of the

  1020. kingdom,

  1021. had landed

  1022. in enemy

  1023. territory

  1024. to demonstrate

  1025. his authority

  1026. and to begin

  1027. an insurgency

  1028. of freedom.

  1029. It was

  1030. showing up

  1031. ahead of

  1032. time

  1033. so that

  1034. we could

  1035. know the

  1036. one who

  1037. would one

  1038. day make

  1039. everything

  1040. right.

  1041. And end

  1042. every evil

  1043. power and

  1044. drive every

  1045. disease and

  1046. decay from

  1047. his good

  1048. creation.

  1049. So you

  1050. see,

  1051. friends,

  1052. coming under

  1053. Jesus'

  1054. authority won't

  1055. destroy you.

  1056. It heals

  1057. us.

  1058. It frees

  1059. us.

  1060. It gives

  1061. us back

  1062. our true

  1063. selves.

  1064. It's like

  1065. we're fish

  1066. sometimes,

  1067. I think.

  1068. It's like

  1069. we're fish

  1070. sometimes just

  1071. sort of flopping

  1072. on the sand,

  1073. wondering why

  1074. it's so hard

  1075. to breathe.

  1076. even though

  1077. we're free

  1078. and in

  1079. control of

  1080. our lives

  1081. and here

  1082. by our

  1083. own

  1084. decisions,

  1085. even though

  1086. all the

  1087. cultural forces

  1088. around me

  1089. are telling

  1090. me that

  1091. this is how

  1092. I should

  1093. find joy

  1094. and freedom,

  1095. and yet

  1096. there we

  1097. are,

  1098. and it's

  1099. so hard

  1100. to breathe.

  1101. And then

  1102. Christ comes,

  1103. and his

  1104. authority

  1105. rises

  1106. before us

  1107. like a

  1108. wave,

  1109. and it's

  1110. terrifying

  1111. in its

  1112. height

  1113. and in

  1114. its

  1115. speed,

  1116. and as

  1117. it starts

  1118. to turn

  1119. and come

  1120. down,

  1121. we think

  1122. it's going

  1123. to crush

  1124. us.

  1125. But when

  1126. it does

  1127. come down,

  1128. it carries

  1129. us,

  1130. not down

  1131. into destruction,

  1132. but it

  1133. takes us

  1134. back into

  1135. the rich

  1136. ocean depths

  1137. for which

  1138. we were

  1139. made.

  1140. So friends,

  1141. where's the

  1142. sticking point

  1143. for you?

  1144. Christian,

  1145. is there

  1146. some area

  1147. of obedience

  1148. that you

  1149. just can't

  1150. trust is

  1151. for your

  1152. good?

  1153. Look at

  1154. Jesus'

  1155. authority

  1156. here,

  1157. and know

  1158. that it

  1159. has come

  1160. to liberate

  1161. you and

  1162. set you

  1163. free.

  1164. Following

  1165. whatever

  1166. internal

  1167. desires or

  1168. feelings you

  1169. might have,

  1170. no matter

  1171. how loudly

  1172. they speak,

  1173. can't

  1174. guarantee

  1175. you the

  1176. freedom you

  1177. want,

  1178. the freedom

  1179. for which

  1180. you were

  1181. created,

  1182. but his

  1183. voice does.

  1184. The same

  1185. voice that

  1186. thunders over

  1187. the waters

  1188. and shatters

  1189. the cedars,

  1190. as Psalm 29

  1191. says,

  1192. is the same

  1193. voice that

  1194. silences the

  1195. evil powers

  1196. here,

  1197. heals the

  1198. multitudes,

  1199. and that same

  1200. voice speaks

  1201. his word to

  1202. us for our

  1203. instruction,

  1204. for our

  1205. liberty,

  1206. and for our

  1207. freedom.

  1208. And as you

  1209. follow his

  1210. word in

  1211. obedience,

  1212. you're

  1213. following the

  1214. word of

  1215. your

  1216. liberator.

  1217. But we

  1218. also need to

  1219. be reminded,

  1220. and this is

  1221. especially true

  1222. if you've been

  1223. following Jesus

  1224. for some

  1225. time,

  1226. that the

  1227. ultimate

  1228. freedom is

  1229. yet to

  1230. come.

  1231. As we

  1232. said,

  1233. these miracles

  1234. in the

  1235. gospels are

  1236. previews of

  1237. God's plan for

  1238. his redeemed

  1239. world.

  1240. And following

  1241. Jesus long

  1242. enough,

  1243. if you follow

  1244. him long

  1245. enough,

  1246. you will

  1247. encounter

  1248. hardships and

  1249. disappointments and

  1250. setbacks and

  1251. frustrations,

  1252. there is no

  1253. doubt.

  1254. And they

  1255. will be

  1256. painful

  1257. reminders that

  1258. the kingdom,

  1259. although already

  1260. present and at

  1261. work in our

  1262. midst,

  1263. is not yet

  1264. complete.

  1265. And yet

  1266. passages like

  1267. this are here

  1268. to remind you,

  1269. to remind us,

  1270. to keep

  1271. trusting in his

  1272. liberating authority.

  1273. glory.

  1274. If his first

  1275. coming was in

  1276. humility,

  1277. and with a

  1278. simple word he

  1279. made disease and

  1280. evil flee,

  1281. friends,

  1282. what will be

  1283. true of his

  1284. second coming

  1285. in glory?

  1286. What liberty and

  1287. healing and

  1288. wholeness will we

  1289. experience then?

  1290. Psalm 96 puts it

  1291. this way,

  1292. let the heavens be

  1293. glad and let the

  1294. earth rejoice.

1295. Let the sea roar and

  1296. all that fills it.

1297. Let the field exult and

  1298. everything in it.

1299. Let all the trees of

  1300. the forest shall sing

  1301. for joy before the

  1302. Lord, for he comes,

  1303. for he comes to

  1304. judge the earth.

  1305. You see what the

  1306. psalmist is saying

  1307. there?

  1308. When the Lord's

  1309. authority is unveiled

  1310. on that day, the

  1311. whole created order

  1312. will erupt in praise.

1313. It will be set free

1314. in a way that we

  1315. can only imagine.

1316. And as we look back

  1317. to these events in

  1318. the gospel, we can

  1319. look forward with

  1320. confidence to an even

  1321. greater future that

  1322. awaits.

  1323. And that will keep

  1324. you from despair when

  1325. things are hard.

  1326. And that will keep

  1327. you from complacency

  1328. when things are easy.

  1329. But there's one last

  1330. thing about Jesus'

  1331. authority that we need

1332. to see in this passage.

  1333. And it's actually just

  1334. a small hint here,

1335. but it will grow as

  1336. Luke's gospel unfolds.

1337. And this third point is

  1338. what I'll call the

  1339. secret of Jesus'

  1340. authority.

  1341. authority.

  1342. You know, it's one

1343. thing to be shown that

  1344. Jesus' authority is a

  1345. liberating authority, and

1346. it's one thing to sort of

1347. know that with our heads.

  1348. It's another thing to

1349. actually get that in our

  1350. hearts.

1351. What could make it real in

1352. such a way that it

  1353. actually moves us to

  1354. really trust his authority

1355. and to know that it

  1356. sets us free?

1357. We have to see that there's

1358. a bit of an unfolding

  1359. secret of Jesus'

  1360. authority in the

  1361. gospels.

1362. At the end of our

  1363. passage, Jesus tells the

1364. crowds who want him to

1365. stay that he's got to

  1366. keep moving.

1367. He's got to keep preaching

1368. the good news of the

  1369. kingdom.

1370. He's got to keep going.

  1371. He's been sent with a

  1372. mission, and that mission

1373. isn't just to stay in

  1374. Capernaum and build a

  1375. following of people who

  1376. are amazed that his

  1377. mighty works.

  1378. But why not?

  1379. Why not stay?

1380. Why not build a bigger

  1381. following?

  1382. What's the urgency?

1383. And on top of that, why

1384. is Jesus so adamant in

  1385. this passage that the

  1386. evil spirits remain

  1387. silent?

1388. They know who he is.

  1389. They get his identity

  1390. right.

1391. Yet he doesn't allow them

  1392. to speak.

  1393. Why?

1394. Well, of course, on the

  1395. one hand, demons aren't

1396. exactly the best PR for a

  1397. new ministry, are they?

  1398. Imagine that conversation

  1399. in first century Galilee.

1400. Hey, I heard that Jesus

1401. of Nazareth might be the

  1402. Messiah we've waited for.

  1403. Oh, yeah?

  1404. Who told you that?

  1405. A demon.

1406. It's not really the sort

  1407. of press you want.

  1408. But, you know, there's a

  1409. deeper reason why he

  1410. commands their silence.

  1411. You know, everyone in

1412. that day had their own

1413. idea of what the Messiah

1414. was supposed to come and

1415. do, how he was supposed

  1416. to exercise his authority,

1417. and most of those ideas

  1418. involved military authority

  1419. and political authority.

  1420. But that wasn't Jesus'

  1421. mission.

  1422. That wasn't what he'd

  1423. come to do.

  1424. His authority wasn't going

1425. to be exercised that way.

1426. And so for now, he told the

1427. demons to be quiet because

1428. he was going to show people

1429. in his own time what he'd

1430. come to do, what was

  1431. driving his mission, what

1432. purpose sent him to other

1433. towns with such urgency to

1434. proclaim the kingdom of God.

1435. You see, most of Jesus'

  1436. Jewish contemporaries thought

1437. that they were the good

1438. guys, and the pagans, the

  1439. Gentiles, the Romans, they

  1440. were the bad guys.

1441. So in that scenario, ending

  1442. evil was very easy.

1443. The Messiah should take his

1444. authority and crush the evil

  1445. people out there.

  1446. But here's the problem.

1447. What if evil isn't just out

  1448. there?

1449. What if it's in here as well?

1450. What if we need to be free

  1451. not from merely external

  1452. enemies, but from internal

1453. enemies of our own making?

1454. How then would the Messiah

1455. use his authority to destroy

  1456. evil without destroying us?

1457. How could he cleanse us of

1458. evil and yet somehow make it

1459. so that we too, like the man

1460. in verse 35, can come away

  1461. without any harm?

1462. As Luke's gospel unfolds and

1463. then races to its climax, we

1464. see exactly how Jesus does

  1465. that.

  1466. The secret of Jesus'

  1467. authority is that its

1468. ultimate act comes not in a

1469. display of power but of

  1470. weakness.

1471. On the cross, Jesus would use

1472. all of his authority to hang

1473. naked and weak to pay the

  1474. penalty for our sins.

1475. So that three days later, having

1476. risen from the grave, he could

1477. have all the authority to speak

1478. the liberating word, the most

1479. liberating word of all, the word

1480. of forgiveness and the word of

1481. peace and the word that makes us

1482. right with God, the word of our

  1483. justification.

1484. You see, Jesus took up this

1485. ultimate authority and laid it

  1486. aside for you.

1487. He was destroyed so that you never

  1488. have to be.

1489. And if that's what he's done for

  1490. you, if that's how he's already

  1491. exercised his authority for

1492. you, then friend, how could you

  1493. not trust him?

1494. How could you not trust one who

  1495. does that for you?

1496. How could his authority not

1497. ultimately be your true freedom?

1498. In the last battle, the final book

  1499. of C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of

1500. Narnia, the whole story revolves

1501. around this little shed, this

1502. little sort of tiny stable.

1503. And from the outside, it looks

1504. pretty beat up and raggedy and

1505. small and confining and sort of

1506. barely big enough for a person to

  1507. fit inside.

1508. But once the characters sort of

1509. step in and enter through, they

1510. realize that inside it contains

  1511. worlds.

1512. That the inside is bigger than

  1513. the outside.

1514. The authority of Jesus is like

  1515. that.

1516. From the outside, it looks like

1517. every other authority that we

  1518. know.

  1519. Constricting, confining, an enemy

  1520. to our happiness.

1521. But when you step inside, you find

  1522. just the opposite.

1523. That it's an authority unlike any

  1524. other.

  1525. It's freedom.

1526. And it contains worlds within

  1527. worlds.

1528. Some of you have tasted that

  1529. freedom.

1530. And his authority really has set

  1531. you free.

  1532. So keep going, friends.

1533. Further up and further in, as

1534. they say at the end of that

  1535. book.

1536. And some of you have been

1537. looking at it from the outside,

1538. maybe for months, maybe for

  1539. years.

1540. If so, then this is your moment

1541. right now to step inside.

  1542. To accept Jesus' liberating

1543. authority over your life, to

1544. rest in what he's done for you,

1545. and to live in his freedom.

1546. And as the characters at the

1547. end of that story say in wonder,

1548. at the end of Lewis' story, they

1549. say, you know, the further up and

1550. further in you go, the bigger

  1551. everything is.

  1552. Let's pray.

1553. Father, we confess that we need your

1554. help to trust the authority of

  1555. Jesus, the rightful king.

1556. Help us to see it and to see how

1557. much you love us and how much Christ

1558. has done for us so that we might

1559. take a step through that door and

1560. come to know the ultimate freedom

  1561. that you bring.

1562. And Father, what ought our

1563. response to these things be?

  1564. But to rejoice.

1565. To be glad and joyful that, Jesus,

1566. you have come and you've taken up

  1567. your rightful reign.

1568. And you've set us free from all

1569. that oppresses us and all that

1570. destroys us and all that holds us

  1571. bound.

1572. Jesus, how could we not rejoice this

1573. morning that you have come and

1574. through laying down your authority,

1575. you have freed us from guilt and

  1576. sin and death.

1577. And Jesus, having taken up your

1578. authority again in the resurrection,

  1579. you now reign forevermore.

1580. Give us glad hearts this week, Lord

1581. Jesus, that rejoice in you and find

1582. your authority to be a sweet thing, we

  1583. pray.

  1584. Amen.
