  1. It was the summer of 1986.

  2. I had just finished my junior year in high school.

  3. Having grown up in a home that went to church, but in which Christian worship was not a daily part of our lives.

  4. Having gone through a confirmation process where I filled out a statement of faith without knowing any of what I really wrote.

  5. And submitted it so that I could be brought in as a member of the church that our family went to.

  6. Having wandered out on a youth group retreat one night and looking up at the stars and wondered if maybe there was a God.

  7. And wondering if maybe there was something to this whole thing.

  8. But never getting an answer until during my sophomore and junior year I met Bill and Becky and other friends who knew Jesus.

  9. And I didn't like their Jesus very much, but I liked them.

  10. And I saw that they had something that was to me irresistibly attractive.

  11. And so I kept hanging out with them and I kept asking questions.

  12. And it brought me to this summer.

  13. This summer where my friend went off across the sea and left me with Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis.

  14. And in that time as I read through this book, I saw who Jesus was for the first time.

  15. And C.S. Lewis walked through the argument that he puts forth in that book.

  16. I found myself being compelled by it.

  17. And I got to the end.

  18. And I remember thinking, if this is true, what am I going to do with it?

  19. I could no longer think, I wonder if there might be something to this.

  20. Now I knew something.

  21. Now I knew something about who Jesus was.

  22. I had been confronted with him.

  23. And I knew that I needed to respond.

  24. Friends, this morning as we continue in our series in the book of Luke, we will find a similar encounter with the Apostle Peter and some of his friends.

  25. As they encountered Jesus and saw him, perhaps for the first time, with real eyes.

  26. So we're looking at the Gospel of Luke.

  27. If you want to turn there, I think it's page 860 in your pew Bible.

  28. Is that right?

  29. Yes?

  30. Good.

  31. As we turn there, let me just remind us of where we are.

  32. We're doing a series this winter on who is this Jesus.

  33. Looking at Luke chapter 4 through chapter 8.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  34. If you remember, we started a couple weeks ago hearing about Jesus as he walked into the synagogue.

  35. And he sat down and he read the words from Isaiah.

  36. Isaiah, the Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

  37. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind.

  38. To set at liberty those who are oppressed.

  39. And to proclaim the day of the Lord's favor.

  40. And then having read this, he sat down and he said, today it is fulfilled.

  41. What he was basically saying is, now that I am here.

  42. And then as we've seen, after that he went out and he did ministry.

  43. And he did it with a kind of authority.

  44. Authority over spiritual forces of darkness.

  45. Authority over physical sickness that would cause to destroy.

  46. Destroy.

  47. And in all of these things it arouses in our hearts the question, who is this one?

  48. And that brings us to our text this morning.

  49. Luke chapter 5.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  50. We're going to look at verses 1 through 11.

  51. So please read along with me.

  52. On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret.

  53. And he saw two boats by the lake.

  54. But the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.

  55. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land.

  56. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

  57. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.

  58. And Simon answered, Master, we toiled all night and took nothing.

  59. But at your word, I will let down the nets.

  60. And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish.

  61. And their nets were breaking.

  62. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.

  63. And they came and filled both the boats so that they began to sink.

  64. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me.

  65. For I am a sinful man, O Lord.

  66. For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken.

  67. And so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.

  68. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid.

  69. From now on, you will be catching men.

  70. And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

  71. Let's pray together.

  72. Lord, we thank you for your word.

  73. And we thank you that in it you reveal yourself to us.

  74. Lord, that it is not simply an instruction book for us on how to live.

  75. But it is a book about you that we might see you clearly and know you rightly.

  76. And respond in love and worship and obedience.

  77. God, what a precious gift it is that you have given us your word.

  78. So that we might know what kind of a God you truly are.

  79. And Lord, as we look at this word this morning, I pray for receptive hearts.

  80. Lord, for eyes that are ready to see you anew, afresh, or maybe for the first time.

  81. Lord, I pray that you might use me.

  82. Lord, that my words would be useful in lifting up Jesus in our midst.

  83. That we might see him and respond.

  84. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  85. Amen.

  86. Amen.

  87. Well, friends, as we look at this story, one of the fun things about doing the Gospels is that they're stories.

  88. And by that I don't mean they're fictional.

  89. By that I mean they're narrative.

  90. Which means that the way that God is telling truth is telling it through an account of what happened.

  91. And so what we're going to do is we're going to look at this.

  92. And instead of giving you an outline of here are the three theses that Luke wants you to understand.

  93. What I want you to see is there are three movements in this drama.

  94. There are three actions that happen or three places that three three sections of this of this passage that capture us and grip us and teach us a bit about what is going on.

  95. We're going to see first we're going to see Jesus unveiled.

  96. And secondly, we're going to see Peter undone.

  97. And third, we are going to see Jesus calling for us to follow.

  98. So let's look at those three movements and see what they have for us this morning.

  99. First of all, Jesus unveiled in the glory of the catch.

  100. This is in verses 1 through 7.

  101. And as you look at this, I want you to sit by the Sea of Galilee.

  102. This Gennesaret is just a section of shoreline along the Sea of Galilee.

  103. Luke uses a different word to tell you.

  104. It's the same familiar place of Galilee.

  105. So Jesus is ministering up north in Israel.

  106. He's collected a group of people.

  107. They've heard about what he's doing.

  108. They've heard about his teaching with authority.

  109. And they've gathered along to do it.

  110. I want you to notice too that Luke says on one occasion.

  111. He's not saying this is an account of everything Jesus did.

  112. And he's not even saying, oh, and this is what happened right after what happened at the end of chapter 4.

  113. He's just saying, oh, let me tell you something else about what Jesus was doing during this time.

  114. And he was gathered in this.

  115. And the crowd became so big that they were pressing in on him.

  116. And he saw the crowd growing.

  117. And he thought, how do I love them?

  118. They've come here to hear the words that I have to say to them.

  119. And I want them to do that.

  120. So we love them enough to look for a solution.

  121. And lo and behold, there it was, two fishing boats by the water.

  122. The fishermen, having fished all night, were now out of their boats,

  123. tending to their nets at the end of a long night.

  124. And he said to the fishermen, hey, can I use your boat?

  125. And so they pushed out from shore.

  126. And the boat became his pulpit.

  127. And the water became his microphone amplification as he preached to a large crowd.

  128. But notice that for Luke, this isn't the point today.

  129. It is the context in which Jesus was doing something else.

  130. It's simply the setup.

  131. Because in verse 4 then, we begin to see the story really take shape.

  132. Because having then sat down as teachers would do and taught the people,

  133. when he was done teaching, he then turned to Peter and said,

  134. Peter, put out into the deep and put your nets down.

  135. Now, Peter would have been pretty taken aback by this for a number of reasons.

  136. One, Jesus was a carpenter, not a fisherman.

  137. Or maybe Jesus was an itinerant religious teacher.

  138. But he still didn't know anything about fishing.

  139. And anyone who knows anything about fishing knows that if you've fished all night

  140. and you haven't caught anything,

  141. you don't go out in the middle of the day to try again.

  142. Because the fish aren't out in the middle of the day.

  143. That's why fishermen always fish at dawn and dusk.

  144. They go out in the right times of day.

  145. And this was the wrong time of day.

  146. As one commentator said,

  147. we need not ask what goes through the mind of a professional fisherman

  148. in a foul mood when a non-fisherman orders him to do again in bad conditions

  149. what he has already tried and failed to do in good conditions.

  150. But interestingly, with all of that resistance,

  151. Peter still responds.

  152. He knows something of Jesus.

  153. He's heard the teaching, maybe, as he's been mending the nets.

  154. Maybe, likely, the account of his healing of his mother had happened

  155. as it was reported in chapter 4.

  156. He knew something of him.

  157. He called him master.

  158. It's an honorary term, like, of teacher or one who deserves honor.

  159. He said,

  160. this is the dumbest thing in the world,

  161. but all right, I'll try it.

  162. I'll try it.

  163. Peter allowed Jesus to invade

  164. an inappropriate place in his life.

  165. Peter may have looked at him and said,

  166. he's a great teacher.

  167. He maybe even, he healed my mother.

  168. That seems like a good place for Jesus to stay in my life.

  169. Now Jesus has insinuated himself into the place of Peter's expertise,

  170. the place of his greatest ability.

  171. Peter's doubtful, but he gives him a chance.

  172. I want to stop for a minute.

  173. I want you to think about your own life.

  174. Jesus walks into your lab.

  175. Why don't you try this?

  176. I couldn't even begin to, like, give you technical terms.

  177. Titrate this.

  178. Spin this.

  179. I don't even know.

  180. I was an history major.

  181. You know what I mean.

  182. Jesus walks into your homeschooling.

  183. Maybe you should do this with your kids.

  184. He invites you into your romantic life.

  185. He goes along on the date.

  186. Follows you into your bedroom.

  187. How about this?

  188. He walks with you down the hall in your high school.

  189. Greeting your friends.

  190. Sitting with you in the lunchroom.

  191. How do you respond?

  192. Master, we fished all night.

  193. We didn't catch anything.

  194. But since you ask, we'll do it.

  195. I'll bet we, he wouldn't get master out of us most of the time.

  196. More like the question.

  197. Jesus, what do you have to do with this part of my life?

  198. This isn't where you belong.

  199. In those places of our greatest expertise.

  200. When we think we're in control, and when we think God really doesn't know what he's doing

  201. or what he's up to, we resist him, and we don't see him as he truly is.

  202. But Peter gave him a doubtful chance.

  203. And look with me at verse 6 and 7.

  204. Luke tells us in excruciating detail to make sure we don't miss what happened.

  205. They enclosed a large number of fish.

  206. And their nets were breaking.

  207. That meant that the weight was greater than what those nets were built to catch.

  208. And so they called their friend over in the other boat.

  209. And they put the fish in the boat.

  210. And these boats that were made to fish, made to hold fish, were sinking.

  211. Because the catch was so great.

  212. This is a fisherman's tail beyond belief.

  213. It was this big!

  214. But it really was.

  215. It wasn't a fiction.

  216. And joy turns into panic.

  217. But it's a gleeful panic.

  218. What are we going to do?

  219. And notice this too.

  220. When Jesus invades Peter's area of expertise,

  221. he doesn't do it flippantly.

  222. It's not just a random display of power.

  223. For the fun of it.

  224. He actually graciously provides for Peter the thing that he most needed and didn't have on his own.

  225. He blessed Peter and the other fishermen with the catch that they could not catch on their own.

  226. So Jesus' display of power was not simply asserting himself to say,

  227. I'm better than you.

  228. Or I'm bigger than you.

  229. Or I'm greater than you.

  230. Although all of those things, as we will see, are true.

  231. But he's saying, don't you see how much I love you?

  232. That I will use all of my greatness for your good.

  233. And so, with Peter, we must look at this Jesus again with new eyes.

  234. Who is this man?

  235. Suddenly the compartments come down.

  236. It's running through Peter's head.

  237. Who is he?

  238. What has he just done?

  239. He's the creator who knows the fish.

  240. Whether he commanded them to jump into the nets or whether he just knew where they were at the wrong time of day,

  241. he's the one who rules over creation.

  242. He's the almighty provider who's able at the snap of his finger with what humanly seems like an irrational request,

  243. provide the thing that we most need.

  244. He is the sovereign over all.

  245. He is the Holy One of God.

  246. Who is he?

  247. This must be God.

  248. Not just a teacher.

  249. Not just a helpful man who might tell me something useful about my spiritual life.

  250. But someone who is greater than all.

  251. This must be God.

  252. The analogy is, if Jesus can rule in the area of my greatest expertise,

  253. then doesn't he have a claim to rule over all?

  254. If Jesus can do this in the place where I'm the professional,

  255. then doesn't Jesus make me accountable to him in everything?

  256. That I do.

  257. And if that request is so surprising and the response so unbelievable,

  258. then the second thing that happens in this story is additionally so surprising.

  259. Because, as we see moving on to verses 8 through 10,

  260. we see our second movement.

  261. Because we see Peter, Simon Peter, responding.

  262. And his response is surprising.

  263. What we see is him undone.

  264. Look with me again at verse 8.

  265. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees,

  266. saying,

  267. Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

  268. With echoes of the Isaiah passage that we read further,

  269. when Isaiah encountered the glory of God

  270. and fell down before him and says,

  271. Woe is me.

  272. Peter falls down before Jesus.

  273. And he says three things.

  274. First thing he says is,

  275. Depart from me.

  276. This is not a Mike Myers,

  277. I'm not worthy.

  278. There's no tongue in cheek.

  279. It's not even just awe and wonder.

  280. You are bigger than me.

  281. But what it is,

  282. is in this common pattern

  283. that we see over and over in the scriptures,

  284. when people encounter God himself,

  285. when people encounter messengers of the God Most High,

  286. they fall down on their faces.

  287. And their beginning start is,

  288. Oh Lord, I can't handle this.

  289. It's too much.

  290. Depart from me,

  291. for I am afraid that I might die in your presence.

  292. Depart from me,

  293. for I am fearful that I am not worthy to be before you.

  294. I cannot stand in your presence.

  295. It would be like the present

  296. who, hearing a surprising knock at the door,

  297. finds the king standing at the doorstep saying,

  298. May I come in and eat?

  299. No, I'm not worthy.

  300. My table is not clean.

  301. My food is not good enough.

  302. I have nothing to offer what you really deserve.

  303. You must be mistaken, Lord.

  304. It must be another house you're looking for.

  305. I think that's what Peter is saying

  306. when he says,

  307. Depart from me, Lord.

  308. He's expressing this fear.

  309. Then the second thing,

  310. For I am a sinful man.

  311. Jesus hasn't said anything about sin.

  312. We haven't heard anything about righteousness,

  313. about the law,

  314. about doing right and wrong.

  315. None of that has happened.

  316. How did Peter get here?

  317. This doesn't make any sense, does it?

  318. Spurgeon helpfully says this about it.

  319. I do not doubt that in the sermon which Christ delivered,

  320. there was such a clear declaration of the holiness of God

  321. that Peter felt himself unveiled,

  322. discovered, his heart laid bare.

  323. And now came the finishing stroke.

  324. The one who had done this could also rule the fishes of the sea.

  325. He must therefore be God.

  326. And if it was to God that all the defects and evils of Peter's heart

  327. had been revealed and thoroughly known,

  328. and almost fearing,

  329. with a kind of inarticulate cry of alarm

  330. because the criminal was in the presence of the judge,

  331. the polluted in the presence of the immaculate,

  332. Peter says,

  333. Depart from me,

  334. for I am a sinful man,

  335. O Lord.

  336. When we find ourselves in the presence of God,

  337. we find ourselves in the presence of all of Him.

  338. And in His perfect power,

  339. in His perfect createrness that rules over all things,

  340. He is also the perfect moral one.

  341. And in His greatness,

  342. we see our smallness.

  343. In His perfection,

  344. we see our sinfulness.

  345. In His power,

  346. we see our weakness.

  347. And Peter confesses it.

  348. For I am a sinful man.

  349. I cannot stand before your holiness.

  350. I think it's possible

  351. that part of what Peter recognized

  352. in that moment was,

  353. I didn't really think,

  354. Jesus,

  355. that you knew anything about fishing.

  356. And so I had you over here

  357. in this nice little compartment

  358. in my life.

  359. And you've now blown that up.

  360. And I've recognized

  361. how sinful that is.

  362. Because if you are God over all,

  363. then you are God over me.

  364. And I am a sinful man

  365. for not seeing your glory

  366. and responding rightly.

  367. Depart from me

  368. for I am a sinful man,

  369. O Lord.

  370. This is the final recognition.

  371. He called him earlier,

  372. Master,

  373. you're one who deserves honor.

  374. But now he says,

  375. you are Lord.

  376. And fascinatingly,

  377. if you have the time,

  378. go back and read Luke 1-3

  379. and see the almost 30 times

  380. when the writer Luke

  381. uses the word Lord.

  382. And in all of those contexts,

  383. it is the Lord God Almighty,

  384. the Lord who rules over,

  385. the Lord of Israel,

  386. the Lord of the promises

  387. of the Old Testament,

  388. the Lord who brings life

  389. to a virgin womb,

  390. the Lord who appears

  391. and opens barren Elizabeth,

  392. the Lord who has shown favor

  393. to those who don't deserve favor.

  394. It is the sovereign good Lord.

  395. And Peter now uses this term

  396. on his lips,

  397. no longer master,

  398. but Lord.

  399. Peter's experienced

  400. both his awesome power

  401. and greatness

  402. and his gracious goodness.

  403. And in this,

  404. he is undone.

  405. He's forgotten about the fish.

  406. He fell down in the boat

  407. at Jesus' knees.

  408. Suddenly,

  409. as he sees what Jesus has done,

  410. Jesus now fills

  411. the whole screen of his life.

  412. Everything that he's concerned about

  413. now fades.

  414. Only Jesus is there.

  415. Friends,

  416. I wonder if Jesus has undone you.

  417. this morning.

  418. I wonder if you've seen him

  419. as he really is.

  420. If he's opened your eyes

  421. to see him as the creator

  422. to whom you're accountable,

  423. as the holy one

  424. whose moral perfection exposes

  425. our sin

  426. and the ugliness of our hearts,

  427. his gracious love for us,

  428. that shows us how ungrateful

  429. and selfish we really are,

  430. his sovereign goodness

  431. that shows us how often we grasp

  432. for control,

  433. for power,

  434. and our own lives.

  435. And our own lives.

  436. Have you seen him

  437. as he really is?

  438. Has he undone you?

  439. When he undoes you,

  440. there's no more pretense.

  441. There's no more excuses.

  442. There's no more expertise

  443. to fall back on

  444. in parts of our lives.

  445. We are laid bare before him

  446. when he undoes us.

  447. We realize we have no basis

  448. to claim rightness before him.

  449. We have no merit

  450. that we might be commended to him.

  451. We have no goodness to cling to

  452. and no self to exalt before him.

  453. We see him and we are undone

  454. because he is greater.

  455. Because he is God.

  456. Maybe you have been a Christian

  457. for a long time.

  458. Maybe you grew up

  459. reading these stories

  460. and thinking,

  461. oh yeah, I know that one.

  462. That's all about,

  463. we will get to the end

  464. about following Jesus.

  465. And I know the song,

  466. I have decided to follow Jesus.

  467. You know,

  468. or I am sure there are other songs

  469. about the fishermen and stuff.

  470. But I did not grow up in that as much

  471. so I do not know the songs.

  472. But maybe you have grown up

  473. in that kind of a background.

  474. And you know those stories from heart.

  475. And you are sort of like,

  476. yeah, yeah, yeah,

  477. we have done this a lot.

  478. I know that.

  479. But I wonder if Jesus

  480. has become too familiar to you.

  481. I wonder if the Jesus of this story

  482. has been lost to you

  483. under the guise of a nice, pleasant Jesus

  484. who wants good for you in your life.

  485. And yeah, he died on the cross for your sins.

  486. And that is good.

  487. And you know,

  488. he can sort of take care of that part of your life

  489. and let you go on your merry way.

  490. I wonder if this morning

  491. you would see him afresh.

  492. If you would see him with new eyes

  493. and see him in his glory

  494. as he says,

  495. I am Lord of all.

  496. I am the giver of life.

  497. I am the one who calls you.

  498. Maybe some of you are like me

  499. and you've grown up in church

  500. and you've known about Jesus,

  501. but you've never really encountered him

  502. and you've never really seen him this way ever.

  503. Or maybe you're here

  504. because through God's gracious work in your life,

  505. you're wondering

  506. whether there might be something to this Christianity.

  507. Maybe like me,

  508. you have a friend

  509. who believes this stuff

  510. and you're like,

  511. what is that all about?

  512. I gotta figure that out.

  513. Maybe you're here this morning wondering,

  514. who is this Jesus?

  515. Jesus.

  516. Whatever it is,

  517. whatever your situation is,

  518. I pray this morning

  519. that as you see him

  520. that you would be undone.

  521. I pray this morning

  522. that you would encounter him.

  523. Friends, when I encountered him,

  524. it was not because God intervened in some,

  525. he didn't suddenly make me win

  526. the lacrosse championship

  527. or make me the star of the school play

  528. or give me a straight egg average

  529. or whatever.

  530. He didn't come in

  531. and invade my areas of expertise.

  532. But through the words of my friends

  533. and through the words of C.S. Lewis

  534. and through my own time

  535. actually reading parts of the Bible,

  536. I encountered him

  537. and saw who he was

  538. and God opened my eyes

  539. to see him

  540. for the first time.

  541. So friends,

  542. wherever you are this morning,

  543. I pray,

  544. I pray that you would see him.

  545. And if you're sitting there

  546. and you know

  547. I haven't been undone by Jesus,

  548. I don't even know this Jesus,

  549. friends,

  550. this is where we look.

  551. This is where you will find him.

  552. Keep reading,

  553. keep looking,

  554. come talk to me,

  555. talk to your friend

  556. who brought you,

  557. talk to your friend

  558. who you've known

  559. for 30 years

  560. as you've gone to church together

  561. and marvel again

  562. at who Jesus is.

  563. Be undone by him.

  564. So Jesus unveils himself

  565. in his glory.

  566. Peter and his friends

  567. and we are undone

  568. as we see him,

  569. as he really is.

  570. And then Jesus responds

  571. to us again

  572. as he does to Peter

  573. and he gives this call.

  574. Look with me again.

  575. Verse 10.

  576. Second half.

  577. And Jesus said to Simon,

  578. don't be afraid.

  579. That is,

  580. I haven't come to destroy you.

  581. I'm not going to simply

  582. wipe you out

  583. though your sin is real

  584. and though your unworthiness

  585. is right.

  586. No,

  587. I've come to do something else.

  588. You see,

  589. it's never been about the fish.

  590. The beginning

  591. and the end of the story

  592. tell us that

  593. the fish has just been a sign

  594. and a symbol

  595. and an unveiling

  596. of the person.

  597. Jesus says,

  598. no,

  599. I'm not going to run

  600. from you,

  601. Peter.

  602. Instead,

  603. I'm going to call you.

  604. I'm going to call you

  605. to follow me.

  606. He doesn't say,

  607. okay,

  608. now you've understood me better.

  609. Go back and do your thing

  610. and we'll go on

  611. and do our thing.

  612. I'll go teach

  613. and you go fish

  614. and we'll be fine.

  615. Isn't that nice?

  616. Jesus doesn't say that.

  617. He says,

  618. no,

  619. I've come to radically

  620. reorient your life.

  621. There's a place

  622. for you to fish.

  623. But what I want you to do

  624. is I want you to begin

  625. to see what I'm about

  626. and to reorient your life

  627. around me

  628. and what my purposes

  629. are in the world

  630. and what my glory

  631. is all about.

  632. He says,

  633. no longer will you fish

  634. for those things

  635. in the lake

  636. but you will fish

  637. for the souls

  638. of men and women.

  639. He'll say,

  640. come follow me

  641. because this is what I'm about.

  642. Don't you see?

  643. This is my teaching ministry

  644. that you've seen.

  645. The net that I throw out

  646. is the net

  647. of the good news

  648. of the kingdom of God

  649. and the gospel.

  650. And the catch that I get

  651. is not

  652. flapping little fish

  653. but it's the souls

  654. of men and women

  655. cast over the crowds.

  656. This is the call

  657. that Jesus gives to them.

  658. He says,

  659. Peter,

  660. you are not undone.

  661. I am now capturing you

  662. and calling you

  663. in fact

  664. into a greater thing

  665. than what you've ever done.

  666. And as you are undone

  667. from all these little things

  668. that consumed your lives

  669. and dominated your attention,

  670. now I want you

  671. to reorient those things

  672. around me

  673. and the things

  674. that I am about.

  675. He wants to say,

  676. no longer is fishing

  677. the purpose of your life.

  678. No longer is fishing

  679. your security.

  680. No longer is fishing

  681. your capital.

  682. No longer is being a fisherman

  683. your identity.

  684. Jesus is Lord of all,

  685. the fish and the fishermen.

  686. And he has come to say,

  687. I now,

  688. as I call you

  689. to follow me,

  690. I will be for you

  691. your security,

  692. your capital,

  693. your identity,

  694. your purpose

  695. in life.

  696. Jesus is saying,

  697. I am not the moon

  698. that simply reflects light

  699. on you at the night,

  700. but I am the sun

  701. around which you

  702. and the planets

  703. of your life

  704. are meant to orbit.

  705. I am meant to be

  706. and call you

  707. to make me

  708. the gravitational center

  709. of what you are

  710. and who you are.

  711. Because don't you see

  712. how easy it is for us

  713. to not do that?

  714. How easy it is for us

  715. to say,

  716. yeah, Jesus,

  717. we'll give you some of it,

  718. but not this stuff.

  719. You can't touch this.

  720. This is mine.

  721. This is where I'm in charge.

  722. This is where I exalt myself.

  723. This is where I'm,

  724. I'm the one

  725. who knows what's going on.

  726. Jesus says,

  727. no,

  728. I'm the Lord of everything.

  729. Even your fishing.

  730. And now look,

  731. let's make sure

  732. we get this right.

  733. Jesus doesn't call

  734. all Christians

  735. to forsake

  736. every other vocation

  737. to become a minister.

  738. In case you're confused

  739. by that,

  740. that's not what

  741. he's saying here.

  742. Right?

  743. Not everyone is called

  744. to literally leave

  745. their boats

  746. and their nets.

  747. God called these men

  748. in a very special way

  749. to play a special role.

  750. They were his disciples

  751. who went with him

  752. and through them

  753. he then shared

  754. and spread

  755. the ministry

  756. that he was called to

  757. of proclaiming the word

  758. and bringing

  759. the kingdom of God

  760. to this world.

  761. They were the beginning

  762. of the church

  763. which was the thing

  764. that he was birthing

  765. through his ministry.

  766. And yes,

  767. he called them

  768. to leave their nets

  769. and their fish

  770. and everything

  771. to follow him.

  772. But practically

  773. for us,

  774. some of you

  775. are going to be called

  776. to leave

  777. all the security,

  778. all the identity,

  779. all the capital,

  780. and all the expertise

  781. that you have

  782. in your career

  783. and to abandon

  784. all of those things

  785. to Jesus' hand

  786. and then to go back

  787. and to do

  788. the very same thing.

  789. And I know some of you,

  790. that's a really hard road

  791. to walk.

  792. I don't know

  793. if you ever think about it

  794. but I sit up here sometimes

  795. and I think,

  796. I have the easy life.

  797. I get to do this

  798. all day,

  799. every day.

  800. This is my joy

  801. that this is my vocation.

  802. Some of you

  803. have a hard road

  804. to walk

  805. in what you do.

  806. Having to live out

  807. making Jesus

  808. the center of your life

  809. as a carpenter

  810. or a fisherman,

  811. as a postdoc

  812. or a mom,

  813. as a teacher,

  814. as an executive,

  815. as a student,

  816. as simply a citizen

  817. in this world.

  818. Whatever you do,

  819. the call here

  820. is to reorient

  821. your life around Jesus

  822. and to live

  823. for Him

  824. and to follow Him

  825. in His work.

  826. And yes,

  827. that does mean

  828. that in your workplace

  829. you are called

  830. to carry out

  831. His mission

  832. which is to love

  833. people in His name

  834. and to proclaim

  835. the good news

  836. that Jesus has come.

  837. You are called

  838. to do that

  839. wherever you are

  840. and whatever you do.

  841. but He doesn't mean

  842. that you have to

  843. leave your vocation

  844. and your work

  845. but He does mean

  846. reorient your life.

  847. Make me the center.

  848. See who I am.

  849. And this is what

  850. I want you to see,

  851. friends,

  852. is that this isn't

  853. a command

  854. try harder,

  855. try harder

  856. to be a better Christian.

  857. Be more committed

  858. to being more committed.

  859. no,

  860. that's not it.

  861. Because you see,

  862. friends,

  863. this story helps us see

  864. the very dynamics

  865. of the gospel itself.

  866. Jesus reveals Himself

  867. in His glory.

  868. And friends,

  869. you know that

  870. in the gospel of Luke,

  871. this section,

  872. chapter 4 through 9,

  873. is a setup.

  874. It started with

  875. this quotation

  876. from Isaiah

  877. about Jesus has come

  878. and the kingdom has come

  879. and then there's

  880. this display of it

  881. in chapters 4 through 9.

  882. This is what it looks like.

  883. Jesus is Lord over this.

  884. Jesus is Lord over that.

  885. Jesus showing the character

  886. of God's kingdom

  887. where He's setting

  888. the captives free

  889. and bringing freedom

  890. to those who are oppressed

  891. and bringing sight

  892. to the blind.

  893. And He does all these things.

  894. And then in chapter 9

  895. in Luke,

  896. Jesus turns

  897. and He sets His face

  898. towards Jerusalem.

  899. And as He goes

  900. to Jerusalem,

  901. He encounters

  902. increasing resistance.

  903. People hate Him

  904. for His message.

  905. And He has resisted

  906. more and more.

  907. And Luke structures

  908. the whole gospel

  909. to lead us

  910. to the end chapters

  911. where we see Jesus

  912. in the fullness

  913. of His glory.

  914. In the greatest,

  915. greatest expression

  916. of His sovereign power

  917. and His love for us.

  918. as He lays down

  919. His life for us.

  920. As He offers Himself

  921. up in our place

  922. because we are sinful men

  923. and ought to be destroyed

  924. by a holy God.

  925. Yet Jesus says,

  926. no, I will take that place

  927. and I will suffer

  928. the destruction

  929. that your sins deserve.

  930. And I will hang

  931. on that cross

  932. in your place

  933. because I love you

  934. and because I have come

  935. to redeem you,

  936. to make you my own.

  937. And He died

  938. and He rose again

  939. to show His power

  940. even over sin

  941. and death

  942. to show that

  943. His redemption

  944. is real

  945. and one day

  946. will be complete

  947. as He lives it out.

  948. As He comes one day

  949. to return

  950. to make it all right.

  951. friends,

  952. when we see

  953. this Jesus,

  954. when this Jesus

  955. is unveiled

  956. before our eyes,

  957. we are able both

  958. like Peter

  959. to fall at His knees

  960. and say,

  961. woe is me,

  962. I am undone

  963. before you

  964. and yet we are able

  965. then to rise

  966. at His gracious call

  967. and say,

  968. I will follow you

  969. and I will leave

  970. everything

  971. because I have seen

  972. how great you are.

  973. Why would I want

  974. to follow anything else?

  975. Why would I want

  976. to spend my life

  977. glorifying anything else

  978. other than the thing

  979. that you are

  980. because you are

  981. the best

  982. and the greatest thing

  983. I have ever encountered?

  984. Lord,

  985. so friends,

  986. it's not about us

  987. working harder

  988. to work harder

  989. or being more committed

  990. to being more committed

  991. but it's about us

  992. seeing Jesus

  993. as He really is

  994. because when we see

  995. Him like that,

  996. He will do this work

  997. in us.

  998. He will undo us

  999. and convict us

  1000. of sin.

  1001. He will show us

  1002. the areas

  1003. where we have not

  1004. given Him

  1005. the Lordship

  1006. of our lives.

  1007. He will bring us

  1008. faith

  1009. when we don't

  1010. have faith.

  1011. He will do

  1012. these things

  1013. when we see

  1014. Him rightly.

  1015. So friends,

  1016. the call

  1017. to Peter

  1018. is a call

  1019. to us.

  1020. Will you

  1021. follow me?

  1022. With all that

  1023. that means

  1024. from this passage,

  1025. we talked

  1026. about it before,

  1027. some of you,

  1028. this may be

  1029. a call

  1030. for the first time

  1031. that you need

  1032. to respond to.

  1033. I've never

  1034. followed Him.

  1035. I've never

  1036. seen Him

  1037. like that.

  1038. I've never

  1039. understood

  1040. what He did

  1041. for me.

  1042. I've never

  1043. understood

  1044. who He

  1045. really is.

  1046. Friends,

  1047. today He

  1048. calls you.

  1049. Follow me.

  1050. Some of you

  1051. have lived

  1052. your life

  1053. about Him

  1054. or knowing

  1055. Him

  1056. for a long

  1057. time.

  1058. But maybe

  1059. today He's

  1060. put a finger

  1061. on a part

  1062. of your life

  1063. that He's

  1064. invaded.

  1065. with His

  1066. Lordship

  1067. and His

  1068. call to

  1069. leave everything

  1070. and to

  1071. follow Him.

  1072. Maybe you

  1073. need to

  1074. surrender

  1075. those areas

  1076. to Him

  1077. and reaffirm

  1078. that you

  1079. will follow

  1080. Him.

  1081. No turning

  1082. back.

  1083. No turning

  1084. back.

  1085. We don't

  1086. usually do

  1087. this in this

  1088. church,

  1089. but I'm

  1090. actually going

  1091. to ask the

  1092. worship team

  1093. to come in.

  1094. I want to

  1095. give you

  1096. just a

  1097. brief moment

  1098. to reflect

  1099. on what

  1100. we've heard

  1101. this morning,

  1102. to think

  1103. about this,

  1104. to pray,

  1105. God,

  1106. will you

  1107. help me?

  1108. To pray,

  1109. God,

  1110. will you

  1111. show me

  1112. yourself?

  1113. Will you

  1114. make my

  1115. eyes see

  1116. who you

  1117. are?

  1118. Maybe you

  1119. already hear

  1120. the Holy

  1121. Spirit

  1122. whispering to

  1123. you

  1124. how you

  1125. need to

  1126. respond to

  1127. Him this

  1128. morning.

  1129. So as the

  1130. musicians begin

  1131. to play,

  1132. I'm just
