  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. Turn with me in your Bibles to the Gospel of Luke.

  3. We are looking at Luke chapter 5.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  4. If you're looking in one of the few Bibles, it is page 861.

  5. We're looking at the Gospel of Luke over the next couple of months in a series entitled

  6. Who is This?

  7. This is one of the most common questions that the disciples and the crowds are asking about

  8. Jesus in this section of Luke, and we just want to focus our attention on Him.

  9. If you're exploring the Christian faith, Jesus is the one who's at the center of it all, and

  10. it stands or falls on Him.

  11. If you're a follower of Jesus, the Bible calls us to fix our eyes on Him and not let anything

  12. else take that primary place.

  13. So let's read together.

  14. We're reading Luke chapter 5, verses 12 to 16.

    Luke 5:12–16

  15. Let's read these verses.

  16. While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy.

  17. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged Him, Lord, if you will, you can make

  18. me clean.

  19. And Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, I will be clean.

  20. And immediately the leprosy left Him.

  21. And He charged Him to tell no one, but go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering

  22. for your cleansing as Moses commanded for a proof to them.

  23. But now even more, the report about Him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear Him

  24. and to be healed of their infirmities.

  25. But He would withdraw to desolate places and pray.

  26. This morning, I want to look at the leper's condition and the Savior's cleansing.

  27. The story begins with a man full of leprosy coming before Jesus.

  28. Now, the word leprosy was used to refer to a variety of skin diseases, including itches,

  29. boils, burns, ringworm, and scalp conditions.

  30. So we can't be completely sure of the exact nature of the man's condition.

  31. But Luke tells us in verse 12 that he was full of leprosy.

  32. That is, his case had progressed to an advanced stage.

  33. It wasn't a minor ailment confined to one localized region in his body.

  34. It wasn't just a slightly annoying rash that he could put clothes on that would cover it

  35. and go about his day mostly as usual.

  36. It had taken over his body and actually his life in a comprehensive way.

  37. So it's very possible that he had the disease that we know of as leprosy.

  38. The medical term is Hansen's disease.

  39. This is a chronic infectious disease that attacks the nervous system.

  40. Beginning with the peripheral regions such as fingers and toes,

  41. leprosy gradually makes your body numb, unable to feel anything.

  42. And it often causes the body to become disfigured as a result.

  43. In Jesus' time, leprosy wasn't just an undesirable medical condition.

  44. It also had devastating social consequences.

  45. Leprosy could not touch anyone.

  46. They were not allowed to live with anyone except each other.

  47. They were not allowed into public places such as the synagogue or the temple.

  48. They could not work normal jobs.

  49. They were not allowed or they could not get married or actively raise children.

  50. In Jesus' time, they were supposed to remain 50 paces away from other human beings.

  51. If someone wanted to help a leper, say by giving them food, they could leave the food somewhere, walk away, and the leper could go and get it.

  52. Many people saw leprosy as a sign of God's curse on a particular individual.

  53. And so in all these ways, leprosy was a mark of shame and exclusion.

  54. Now some of these attitudes and practices had simply developed over time in that culture.

  55. But some of them were rooted in the Old Testament law itself.

  56. If you look at Leviticus 13 and 14, it's an extensive discussion of how leprosy can be diagnosed.

  57. And then what lepers have to do as a result.

  58. And then what should happen if someone recovered.

  59. And this is what it says lepers have to do.

  60. Leviticus 13, 45 and 46.

  61. It says,

  62. The leprous person who has the disease shall wear torn clothes, let the hair of his head hang loose, cover his upper lip, and cry out,

  63. Unclean, unclean.

  64. He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease.

  65. He is unclean.

  66. He shall live alone.

  67. His dwelling shall be outside the camp.

  68. Now you might ask,

  69. Why would the Old Testament law, given by God himself,

  70. require lepers to have such a miserable existence through no fault of their own?

  71. Being separated from the broader society and making their appearance as off-putting as possible.

  72. Well, partly, it was a matter of public health.

  73. By the time of Jesus, scribes had counted as many as 72 different afflictions that were defined as leprosy,

  74. sort of included under that term.

  75. Some of these were skin diseases that were highly contagious.

  76. Some of them were incurable.

  77. Some of them had dreadful and even deadly effects.

  78. Rabbis spoke of lepers as the living dead.

  79. Right?

  80. Curing lepers was understood to be as difficult as raising the dead.

  81. But you know, the Old Testament laws weren't only about preserving public health,

  82. though that was a legitimate concern at the time.

  83. There was also a spiritual principle involved.

  84. You see, according to Leviticus,

  85. leprosy didn't just make you sick.

  86. It made you unclean.

  87. And even here in this passage in Luke, notice,

  88. the leper needs not just healing, but cleansing.

  89. It's actually one of the major themes if you read the book of Leviticus.

  90. What makes us unclean and how we can be cleansed?

  91. And according to Leviticus,

  92. it wasn't only direct personal violations of God's law,

  93. like idol worship or disobedience to the commandments

  94. that could make a person unclean.

  95. There were several other things that could make you unclean,

  96. such as coming into contact with death and decay,

  97. touching a dead body or eating a scavenging animal,

  98. coming into contact with blood or other bodily discharges,

  99. or skin diseases like leprosy that caused disfigurement of the human body.

  100. The common thread among all these things

  101. is that in some way or other,

  102. all of these things were visible signs or physical expressions

  103. of the brokenness and corruption in this world.

  104. In other words,

  105. the brokenness and corruption in this world

  106. somehow leaves its mark on us,

  107. and that's what makes us unclean.

  108. And in particular,

  109. leprosy,

  110. physically numbing

  111. and disfiguring

  112. was sometimes seen as a visual image

  113. of humanity's spiritual condition.

  114. Earlier we read in Isaiah 64,

  115. Isaiah says,

  116. we have all become

  117. like one who is unclean.

  118. All our righteous deeds

  119. are like a polluted garment.

  120. In other words,

  121. our sin,

  122. that is our core rejection of God

  123. and rebellion against Him,

  124. it makes us unable to feel rightly.

  125. It distorts our perceptions.

  126. It twists our very nature.

  127. Leprosy

  128. was one visible picture of just that.

  129. Now as Christians today,

  130. we are not bound by the Old Testament ceremonial law.

  131. But there's actually an important insight

  132. into human nature contained within it.

  133. You see,

  134. there are many things today

  135. that can make us feel

  136. just like the leper would have felt back then.

  137. Dirty,

  138. disgusting,

  139. disfigured,

  140. dishonored,

  141. damaged goods,

  142. ugly,

  143. unwanted,

  144. worthless,

  145. rejected,

  146. shut out,

  147. and self-conscious about it.

  148. In one word,

  149. what we're talking about here

  150. is shame.

  151. Shame is basically anything

  152. that makes you want to run and hide.

  153. Now sometimes we feel shame

  154. because of our past and present sins,

  155. especially ones that seem

  156. particularly scandalous

  157. or disgraceful.

  158. maybe you were sexually unfaithful.

  159. Maybe you have a pornography habit.

  160. Maybe you have a crime

  161. that you were arrested for

  162. and now it's on your record.

  163. Maybe you had an abortion.

  164. Maybe you pressured someone else

  165. to get an abortion.

  166. Maybe it's an addiction,

  167. drugs,

  168. or alcohol.

  169. And it's ruined your life.

  170. Torn apart relationships.

  171. Maybe you've had a failure

  172. as a parent.

  173. Maybe it's something seemingly

  174. less catastrophic,

  175. but still it's made you want

  176. to run away and hide.

  177. One of the first times I remember

  178. feeling shame in my life,

  179. I think I was about five years old.

  180. And my aunt had taken me

  181. to pick raspberries

  182. with my cousins.

  183. And I sat in the back of the car

  184. and against her command,

  185. I ate a lot of the box of raspberries.

  186. And we got back to her house

  187. and she said,

  188. did you eat the raspberries?

  189. And I said, no, I did not.

  190. And she said,

  191. look at your hands and face.

  192. You lied.

  193. And then of course

  194. she had to tell my mother.

  195. Now that was a minor incident.

  196. It hasn't stayed with me

  197. throughout my life.

  198. But sometimes even seemingly

  199. non-catastrophic things,

  200. lies,

  201. where we get caught,

  202. make us feel shame.

  203. But there's also other reasons,

  204. not just personal sins,

  205. there's also other reasons

  206. we might feel shame.

  207. Maybe you grew up in a house

  208. where you were constantly criticized

  209. and belittled

  210. or ignored

  211. and neglected.

  212. Maybe you were adopted

  213. and however wonderful

  214. your adoptive family may be,

  215. deep down part of you

  216. still feels

  217. cast off,

  218. abandoned.

  219. maybe you gave up

  220. a child for adoption.

  221. Not because you hated

  222. your child,

  223. but because you loved them dearly

  224. and because you knew

  225. that at that point

  226. in your life

  227. there was no way

  228. you could care for them.

  229. And yet you still feel shame.

  230. Maybe you've lived

  231. most or all of your life

  232. as an ethnic minority

  233. or a foreigner

  234. and every day

  235. you feel different,

  236. like you'll never fully belong

  237. and be valued

  238. and understood.

  239. Maybe you're a man

  240. and you haven't had

  241. a steady job

  242. for months

  243. or even years.

  244. And you feel like a failure.

  245. You feel powerless

  246. to provide

  247. for yourself,

  248. for your family.

  249. Maybe you're a woman

  250. who's been treated

  251. like an object

  252. or seen as a threat

  253. instead of an ally

  254. and you feel dishonored

  255. and worthless.

  256. Maybe you've been diagnosed

  257. with a mental illness

  258. or a learning disability

  259. and the label

  260. seems to define you.

  261. Bipolar,

  262. schizophrenic,

  263. ADHD.

  264. Maybe you've been

  265. sexually abused.

  266. What the abuser did

  267. was not your fault

  268. but it still leaves a mark.

  269. Maybe you feel

  270. same-sex attraction.

  271. Maybe you've prayed

  272. that God would take it away

  273. and every day

  274. that it doesn't go away

  275. you feel more and more ashamed

  276. and alienated

  277. before God

  278. and in the church.

  279. Maybe you're overweight.

  280. Makes you perpetually

  281. self-conscious,

  282. self-condemning.

  283. Shame comes from many sources.

  284. Shame is very powerful.

  285. It can fill us

  286. like leprosy filled

  287. this man.

  288. It can reside deep within us,

  289. hidden under the outward appearance

  290. of competence and success.

  291. It can crush us

  292. and debilitate us

  293. and even kill us.

  294. But in this story

  295. we see

  296. the good news

  297. of a Savior

  298. who has come

  299. to meet us

  300. in our shame

  301. to cleanse us

  302. from our shame

  303. and restore us

  304. to a place of honor.

  305. In verse 12,

  306. the man full of leprosy

  307. comes before Jesus.

  308. Somehow,

  309. we don't know how,

  310. he's heard

  311. about this man

  312. and what he's heard

  313. gives him hope.

  314. What he's heard

  315. gives him courage.

  316. He venters into a city,

  317. presumably a place

  318. where lepers

  319. weren't supposed

  320. to wander around,

  321. too many other people around.

  322. He comes close to Jesus,

  323. closer than he's supposed to

  324. according to the custom

  325. of the day

  326. and he humbles himself

  327. in utter dependence,

  328. falling on his face,

  329. begging for help,

  330. confessing Jesus as Lord,

  331. declaring his power

  332. to cleanse.

  333. Sometimes,

  334. sometimes in our shame,

  335. we can hold on to pride.

  336. We say,

  337. I don't need help.

  338. I don't want help.

  339. I could never be helped.

  340. And we isolate.

  341. And we self-sabotage.

  342. And we explode in anger

  343. and blame others

  344. and live in denial

  345. or despair.

  346. But this man had heard

  347. something about Jesus

  348. and in his desperation,

  349. he humbled himself

  350. before Jesus.

  351. And that is always

  352. the way to hope,

  353. to humble ourselves

  354. before God

  355. and say,

  356. if you will,

  357. you can.

  358. See, three things

  359. about Jesus' cleansing

  360. of the leper.

  361. First, Jesus meets us

  362. in our shame.

  363. Jesus stretched out

  364. his hand

  365. and touched him.

  366. Jesus didn't have

  367. to do that.

  368. In other situations,

  369. Jesus healed people's

  370. sicknesses

  371. or drove out demons

  372. by his word alone,

  373. even from a long

  374. distance away.

  375. But here,

  376. he intentionally reached out

  377. and touched this man

  378. who was considered

  379. untouchable.

  380. You see,

  381. if the leper

  382. touched anyone,

  383. they too

  384. would become

  385. ritually unclean.

  386. Imagine if you were

  387. this man.

  388. For months,

  389. no one has touched you.

  390. Maybe years.

  391. Ever since you were

  392. diagnosed with this

  393. horrible disease

  394. that has now filled

  395. your body.

  396. The disease has been

  397. your death sentence.

  398. First,

  399. socially.

  400. Second,

  401. economically.

  402. Third,

  403. psychologically.

  404. and you know

  405. eventually,

  406. physically.

  407. You're lying

  408. face down

  409. before Jesus,

  410. not quite knowing

  411. what to expect

  412. and you feel

  413. his hand

  414. on your shoulder.

  415. See,

  416. Jesus didn't just

  417. treat this man

  418. as a project

  419. to be fixed.

  420. He took the time

  421. to touch him,

  422. to honor him

  423. as a human being

  424. made in the image

  425. of God.

  426. James Edwards writes,

  427. the outstretched arm

  428. of Jesus

  429. was a long reach

  430. for his day,

  431. for any day.

  432. It removes

  433. the social,

  434. physical,

  435. and spiritual

  436. chasms

  437. prescribed

  438. by law

  439. and custom

  440. alike.

  441. Human touch

  442. matters

  443. in the body

  444. of Christ.

  445. You know,

  446. that's one reason

  447. why listening

  448. to a sermon

  449. on a podcast

  450. is never

  451. a substitute

  452. for physically

  453. coming to church.

  454. You can't take

  455. communion online

  456. either,

  457. by the way.

  458. Now,

  459. if you're too sick

  460. to leave the house

  461. or if you're home

  462. taking care of sick kids,

  463. listening to a sermon

  464. online is certainly

  465. better than nothing.

  466. But if you can't

  467. come to church

  468. for a long period

  469. of time,

  470. let someone know.

  471. so that somebody

  472. in the body of Christ

  473. can come and visit you

  474. and pray with you

  475. in person.

  476. Meaningful,

  477. purposeful,

  478. appropriate human

  479. touch

  480. communicates welcome,

  481. empathy,

  482. solidarity,

  483. friendship,

  484. affection,

  485. blessing.

  486. A few years ago

  487. there was a striking

  488. photograph

  489. that circulated

  490. in the world news.

  491. Pope Francis

  492. embracing a man

  493. whose body

  494. was covered

  495. with ugly tumors.

  496. He had a disease

  497. called,

  498. I'm forgetting

  499. the name of the disease

  500. and I didn't write it down.

  501. But his body

  502. was covered

  503. with tumors.

  504. He was tenderly

  505. kissing him

  506. on the top

  507. of his tumor-ridden head

  508. and praying with him.

  509. And it made an impression

  510. on the world

  511. because it wasn't fake.

  512. It bore witness

  513. to the world

  514. of the character

  515. of Christ.

  516. Some time ago

  517. a single person

  518. in our church

  519. said to me

  520. I often long

  521. for human touch.

  522. It means a lot

  523. to me

  524. when someone

  525. I know at church

  526. comes up

  527. and gives me

  528. a hug

  529. on Sundays.

  530. Often it's the only

  531. time in the week

  532. that someone does that.

  533. Whether it's a hug

  534. or a handshake

  535. or a fist pump

  536. or a high five

  537. or a gentle hand

  538. on the shoulder,

  539. touch makes

  540. a difference.

  541. That's why

  542. when Christians

  543. pray for one another

  544. we sometimes

  545. lay hands

  546. on one another.

  547. You know

  548. that's not just

  549. a Pentecostal church

  550. thing.

  551. That's a good

  552. normal

  553. biblical

  554. Christian practice.

  555. Now don't do it

  556. if it makes

  557. somebody uncomfortable

  558. but it can be

  559. a very good thing.

  560. Some of you know

  561. that touch

  562. makes a difference

  563. because you've been

  564. hurt by people

  565. who touched you

  566. in harmful ways.

  567. In appropriate ways.

  568. That can be

  569. another cause

  570. of lasting shame.

  571. But the way

  572. to seek healing

  573. from those wounds

  574. is not to forever

  575. recoil

  576. from human touch

  577. and friendship

  578. and intimacy.

  579. It's first and foremost

  580. of course

  581. to seek intimacy

  582. with the Lord

  583. and to find comfort

  584. in the love

  585. of a transcendent God

  586. who is unlike

  587. anyone else.

  588. but it also

  589. looks like

  590. receiving

  591. His mercy

  592. in the form

  593. of healthy

  594. purposeful

  595. appropriate

  596. kinds

  597. of human touch

  598. in friendship

  599. in marriage

  600. in the church

  601. and to let

  602. those good

  603. and right

  604. and honoring

  605. touches

  606. gradually erase

  607. and replace

  608. the wounds

  609. the deep wounds

  610. caused by

  611. harmful

  612. and violating

  613. touch.

  614. Jesus meets us

  615. in our shame

  616. but Jesus also

  617. cleanses us

  618. from

  619. our shame.

  620. Jesus' touch

  621. was not only

  622. a sympathetic

  623. and reassuring

  624. human touch

  625. it also conveyed

  626. divine

  627. cleansing

  628. power.

  629. You see

  630. according to

  631. the Old Testament

  632. law

  633. if Jesus

  634. were simply

  635. a normal

  636. human being

  637. touching the

  638. leper

  639. would have

  640. made Jesus

  641. unclean.

  642. But here

  643. the reverse

  644. happens.

  645. Jesus makes

  646. the leper

  647. clean.

  648. Immediately

  649. the leprosy

  650. left Him.

  651. Almost

  652. everywhere

  653. the Old Testament

  654. assumes the principle

  655. that we're all

  656. familiar with

  657. in our daily

  658. lives.

  659. Disease

  660. is contagious

  661. health

  662. isn't.

  663. Right?

  664. Someone shook

  665. my hand this

  666. morning and

  667. they said oh

  668. but by the

  669. way I have

  670. a bad cold

  671. and I thought

  672. I probably

  673. should wash

  674. my hands

  675. so I don't

  676. spread that

  677. to everyone

  678. else.

  679. I didn't

  680. think I'll

  681. make this

  682. person better

  683. because I'm

  684. feeling fine

  685. today.

  686. Right?

  687. You got a

  688. barrel of

  689. apples,

  690. there's one

  691. rotten apple,

  692. that one

  693. rotten apple

  694. can spoil

  695. all the ones

  696. right around

  697. it.

  698. All those

  699. good apples

  700. ain't going

  701. to do any

  702. good for

  703. that rotten

  704. apple.

  705. Sometimes we

  706. apply this to

  707. people's character,

  708. right?

  709. If you're

  710. known as an

  711. honorable,

  712. an upright,

  713. upstanding citizen,

  714. a morally pure

  715. person,

  716. don't associate

  717. with those

  718. people who are

  719. known for shameful

  720. and scandalous

  721. behavior because

  722. your reputation

  723. is at stake.

  724. people who are

  725. not going to

  726. do any

  727. things.

  728. But there's

  729. very few

  730. places in

  731. the Old

  732. Testament that

  733. hint that

  734. one day the

  735. reverse could

  736. be true,

  737. that cleansing

  738. could be

  739. contagious.

  740. Now, one of

  741. these places is

  742. in Exodus 29,

  743. and you probably

  744. haven't read it

  745. in a while because

  746. it's in the

  747. middle of all the

  748. regulations about

  749. the furniture for

  750. the tabernacle.

  751. But it says

  752. this, Exodus 29,

  753. 37, the altar,

  754. that is where the

  755. priest would offer

  756. sacrifice to God,

  757. shall be most

  758. holy.

  759. Whatever touches

  760. the altar shall

  761. become holy.

  762. Now, that's a very

  763. powerful statement

  764. because being holy

  765. was not just being

  766. clean.

  767. Being clean means

  768. you're okay,

  769. and you're honored,

  770. and you're good.

  771. Being holy means

  772. set apart for God.

  773. treasured,

  774. uniquely devoted

  775. to God.

  776. The problem was

  777. the altar was

  778. in the middle of

  779. the temple,

  780. and the only people

  781. who could come into

  782. that temple were

  783. the priests.

  784. So it was

  785. inaccessible to

  786. almost everyone.

  787. But then we come

  788. to Isaiah 6.

  789. Last week we read

  790. Isaiah 6.

  791. Isaiah cried out

  792. in the presence of

  793. the Lord.

  794. He has this vision

  795. that he's in the

  796. heavenly courtroom,

  797. and he cries out,

  798. woe is me,

  799. because he has a

  800. vision of God

  801. in his holiness.

  802. Woe is me,

  803. I'm lost,

  804. for I am a man

  805. of unclean lips.

  806. I dwell among a

  807. people of unclean lips,

  808. and my eyes have seen

  809. the King,

  810. the Lord Almighty.

  811. But then what

  812. happens next?

  813. One of the seraphim,

  814. that is,

  815. one of the angels,

  816. a representative of

  817. the King himself,

  818. flew to me,

  819. having in his hand

  820. a burning coal

  821. that he had taken

  822. with tongs from

  823. the altar,

  824. and he touched

  825. my mouth,

  826. and said,

  827. behold,

  828. this has touched

  829. your lips.

  830. Your guilt is

  831. taken away,

  832. and your sin

  833. atoned for.

  834. That's the exact

  835. same pattern that

  836. happens in this

  837. passage in Luke.

  838. Luke,

  839. the leper,

  840. is full of

  841. uncleanness.

  842. He cannot cleanse

  843. himself.

  844. He comes before

  845. Jesus like Isaiah.

  846. Woe is me,

  847. I'm lost.

  848. He falls on his face,

  849. begs for mercy.

  850. It's his only hope.

  851. And then Jesus

  852. touches him,

  853. and he's cleansed.

  854. Who is this Jesus?

  855. He's holy.

  856. He has come from

  857. the very presence

  858. of God in heaven.

  859. He's not just

  860. a good man.

  861. He's come to earth

  862. to make the holy

  863. God accessible

  864. to human beings.

  865. And he has divine

  866. power,

  867. not only to meet

  868. us in our shame,

  869. but to cleanse us

  870. from our shame,

  871. and clothe us

  872. in his holiness,

  873. and call us

  874. into his service.

  875. His authoritative

  876. word accompanies

  877. his healing touch.

  878. I will be clean.

  879. Through his touch

  880. and his word,

  881. Jesus cleanses us

  882. from shame.

  883. Sometimes it happens

  884. instantly like it did

  885. here.

  886. Sometimes it happens

  887. gradually as we abide

  888. in Jesus' word

  889. and rest in his love

  890. and participate

  891. in the body of believers.

  892. Maybe you believe

  893. in Jesus.

  894. Maybe you've believed

  895. in him for a long time.

  896. But every day

  897. you battle

  898. self-condemnation

  899. and shame.

  900. Let me encourage you

  901. to keep fighting

  902. that battle.

  903. Don't give more

  904. authority to your

  905. feelings of worthlessness

  906. than to Jesus.

  907. Let me also recommend

  908. a book

  909. that's on the bookstall

  910. downstairs called

  911. Shame Interrupted.

  912. How God Lifts

  913. the Pain of

  914. Worthlessness

  915. and Rejections

  916. by Ed Welch.

  917. It's not a quick

  918. and easy read.

  919. Because it's not

  920. a quick and easy

  921. topic.

  922. But it's really,

  923. really good.

  924. But most of all,

  925. let me point you

  926. to what God says

  927. in his word.

  928. The word of God

  929. says Jesus

  930. is not ashamed

  931. to call us.

  932. That is,

  933. everyone who

  934. looks to him

  935. like the leper

  936. and trusts in him.

  937. Brothers

  938. and sisters.

  939. The Bible says

  940. he has washed away

  941. our sins.

  942. That's what we celebrate

  943. in baptism.

  944. It says he has filled us

  945. with his very own spirit.

  946. The promise of glory

  947. to come.

  948. It says he welcomes us

  949. to feast at his table.

  950. We'll do that

  951. in a few minutes.

  952. And he clothes us

  953. with honor

  954. and beauty.

  955. I want to read

  956. from Isaiah chapter 61.

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  957. You don't have to turn there.

  958. Just listen.

  959. This is the same chapter

  960. Jesus read from

  961. in his sermon

  962. in the synagogue

  963. at Nazareth

  964. when he said,

  965. today this scripture

  966. is fulfilled

  967. in your hearing.

  968. In other words,

  969. this is why

  970. I have come.

  971. So if you,

  972. like the leper,

  973. have turned to Jesus

  974. and fallen at his feet

  975. and cried out

  976. for his mercy,

  977. I want you to hear

  978. these words

  979. because they are for you.

  980. They're not just for somebody else

  981. sitting next to you.

  982. They're for you.

  983. Christ has come

  984. to bestow on you

  985. a crown of beauty

  986. instead of ashes,

  987. the oil of joy

  988. instead of mourning,

  989. a garment of praise

  990. instead of a spirit

  991. of despair.

  992. You will be called

  993. oaks of righteousness,

  994. a planting of the Lord

  995. for the display

  996. of his splendor.

  997. You will rebuild

  998. the ancient ruins

  999. and restore the places

  1000. long devastated.

  1001. You will be called

  1002. priests of the Lord.

  1003. You know,

  1004. the New Testament says

  1005. that we are priests

  1006. of the Lord.

1007. That means we can come

  1008. into his presence freely.

  1009. There's not all those

  1010. barriers anymore.

  1011. You will be named

  1012. ministers of our God,

  1013. servants of our God.

  1014. Instead of your shame,

  1015. you will receive

  1016. a double portion.

  1017. Instead of disgrace,

  1018. you will rejoice

  1019. in your inheritance

  1020. and everlasting joy

  1021. will be yours.

  1022. You will be called

  1023. by a new name

  1024. that the mouth

  1025. of the Lord

  1026. will bestow.

  1027. No longer

  1028. will they call you

  1029. deserted

  1030. or name your land

  1031. desolate,

1032. but you will be called

  1033. Hephzibah,

  1034. that is,

  1035. my delight

  1036. is in her

  1037. and your land

  1038. Beulah,

  1039. married,

  1040. for the Lord

  1041. will take delight

  1042. in you.

  1043. As a bridegroom

  1044. rejoices over his bride,

  1045. so will your God

  1046. rejoice over you.

  1047. From Zephaniah 3,

  1048. the Lord your God

  1049. is in your midst,

  1050. a mighty one

  1051. who will save.

  1052. He will rejoice

  1053. over you

  1054. with gladness.

  1055. He will quiet you

  1056. by his love.

1057. He will exalt over you

  1058. with loud singing,

1059. I will save the lame

  1060. and gather the outcasts

  1061. and I will change

  1062. their shame

  1063. into praise

  1064. and renown

  1065. in all the earth.

  1066. This is what Jesus

  1067. has come to do,

  1068. to cleanse us

  1069. from our shame.

  1070. Finally,

  1071. he gives us

  1072. a place of honor.

  1073. Verse 14,

  1074. he charged him

  1075. to tell no one,

1076. but go and show yourself

  1077. to the priest

  1078. and make an offering

  1079. for your cleansing

  1080. as Moses commanded

1081. for a proof to them.

  1082. You might say,

  1083. that sounds sort of

  1084. anticlimactic.

  1085. Don't tell anyone

  1086. about the great thing

  1087. that's just happened

  1088. to you,

1089. just go to the priest.

  1090. But actually,

  1091. back then,

  1092. going to the priest

  1093. was the only way

1094. he could be fully restored

  1095. to participate

  1096. in his community.

  1097. Back then,

  1098. the priest function,

  1099. one of the functions

  1100. of the priest

  1101. was sort of

1102. as a public health official.

  1103. He was the one

  1104. who would examine you

  1105. and either say,

  1106. you're unclean,

  1107. so you're on quarantine,

  1108. or you're clean,

  1109. and you're free

1110. to go as you please.

  1111. So Jesus was saying,

  1112. respect the authorities

  1113. that are in place,

1114. do what the law says,

1115. but then he says more.

  1116. He says,

1117. do it for a proof to them.

  1118. That is,

1119. as a witness to them.

  1120. He's saying,

1121. don't just go to the priest

1122. to get your clean bill

  1123. of health

  1124. and be officially cleared,

1125. but go as a living witness,

  1126. a visible demonstration

  1127. of the cleansing

  1128. and healing power

  1129. of Jesus.

  1130. You see,

  1131. Jesus doesn't just

  1132. cleanse us from shame.

1133. He sends us on a mission

1134. to be a living testimony

  1135. of who he is

  1136. and what he's done.

  1137. When we've experienced

  1138. the cleansing power

  1139. of Jesus,

  1140. one writer says,

  1141. he sends us out

1142. to touch the hurting places

1143. in the lives of others.

  1144. We are now part

  1145. of a healing community

  1146. that the Holy Spirit

1147. uses to make people whole.

  1148. Not surprisingly,

  1149. verse 15,

  1150. the word spreads,

  1151. the crowds gather

  1152. to hear his word

  1153. and experience

  1154. his healing touch.

  1155. You know,

  1156. it's interesting

  1157. how Luke ends

  1158. this passage

  1159. in verse 16.

  1160. He ends this passage

  1161. by remarking

  1162. on Jesus'

  1163. frequent habit

  1164. of withdrawing

  1165. to pray.

  1166. You see,

  1167. Jesus' ministry

  1168. was beginning

  1169. to grow here.

  1170. He was teaching

  1171. in synagogues.

  1172. He was healing.

1173. He was driving out demons.

  1174. He was gathering disciples.

1175. He had cleansed this leper.

1176. He was in high demand.

  1177. Many responsibilities

  1178. and many good opportunities

1179. right in front of him.

  1180. But Jesus wasn't

  1181. exclusively focused

  1182. on gathering

  1183. the largest following

  1184. possible

  1185. as quickly

  1186. as possible.

  1187. He wasn't driven

  1188. by the desire

  1189. to please everyone

  1190. who was constantly

  1191. making requests

  1192. of him.

  1193. He would withdraw

  1194. and pray.

  1195. Now,

  1196. if you've experienced

  1197. the cleansing power

  1198. of Jesus

  1199. and if you've been

  1200. called into his mission,

  1201. sometimes life

  1202. can get pretty busy.

  1203. Lots of responsibilities

1204. and lots of good opportunities.

  1205. And Luke wants

  1206. to remind us

  1207. that Jesus

  1208. prioritized prayer.

  1209. He prioritized

  1210. intimate communion

  1211. with his heavenly father

  1212. because ultimately

  1213. he lived,

1214. that is who he lived

  1215. to please.

  1216. Yes,

  1217. Jesus restored

  1218. the leper

1219. to a place of honor

  1220. in his society.

  1221. That's why he sent,

1222. part of why he sent him

  1223. to the priest.

  1224. And yes,

  1225. he can bring you

  1226. from a place

  1227. of powerlessness

  1228. and voicelessness

  1229. and shame

  1230. and rejection

1231. to a position of honor.

  1232. and even leadership

  1233. in his kingdom.

  1234. But never forget,

  1235. the greatest honor

  1236. before the world

  1237. cannot compare

  1238. to the privilege

  1239. of coming before

  1240. the throne of God,

  1241. the throne of grace

  1242. with freedom

  1243. and confidence

  1244. because through Jesus Christ,

  1245. God is now

  1246. your heavenly father

  1247. and you can freely

  1248. approach him

  1249. and spend time

  1250. with him.

  1251. That's the greatest

  1252. honor of all.

  1253. We have free

  1254. access

  1255. and confidence

  1256. to enter

  1257. the presence of God.

  1258. Gerhardus Vos

  1259. wrote the following,

  1260. to be a Christian

  1261. is to live

  1262. one's life

  1263. not merely

  1264. in obedience

  1265. to God

  1266. nor merely

  1267. in dependence

  1268. on God

  1269. nor even

  1270. merely

  1271. for the sake

  1272. of God.

  1273. It is to stand

  1274. in conscious

  1275. reciprocal

  1276. fellowship

  1277. with God.

  1278. To be identified

  1279. with him

  1280. in thought

  1281. and purpose

  1282. and work

  1283. to receive

  1284. from him

  1285. and to give back

  1286. to him.

  1287. He's talking about

  1288. union

  1289. with Christ.

  1290. In the Holy Spirit

  1291. through which we enter

  1292. the presence

  1293. of God

  1294. the Father.

  1295. Jesus touches

  1296. the leper.

  1297. He cleanses

  1298. the leper.
