  1. There is a crack in everything.

  2. Our text this morning is a familiar one to many of us, I think.

  3. And there's a reason why.

  4. Because this is one of those texts where we get to see down clearly

  5. through the crack in everything down into the heart of what's gone wrong

  6. and what we need to fix it.

  7. In fact, it looks down even into the struggles of our own heart.

  8. So I want to approach this text very simply with two main points.

  9. We see in this text that Jesus reveals your greatest need

  10. and Jesus answers your greatest doubt.

  11. So let's dive in.

  12. First, Jesus reveals your greatest need.

  13. Look with me again at verse 17.

  14. On one of the verses, the teachers of the law were sitting there

  15. who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem

  16. and the power of the church with him to heal.

  17. So here is Jesus.

  18. He's beginning to sort of catch the attention at this early stage of his ministry.

  19. Now the attention is sort of going broader to the religious leaders

  20. and the religious authorities.

  21. And they've gathered around to hear him teach.

  22. Then verse 17.

  23. And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed

  24. and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus.

  25. But finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd,

  26. they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed

  27. through the tiles into the midst before Jesus.

  28. And when he saw their faith, he said,

  29. Man, your sins are forgiven you.

  30. What exactly, friends, do you think your greatest need is?

  31. I think we can guess pretty clearly what this man thought his was.

  32. It's obvious to anyone who met him, right?

  33. He was paralyzed.

  34. He couldn't walk.

  35. And think how massively that effect would have affected his whole life.

  36. Economically, in an agricultural society, of course, he couldn't work.

  37. He would have been utterly dependent on others for economic support.

  38. Socially, his paralysis, without a doubt, affected where he could go,

  39. who he could spend time with,

  40. who maybe was even comfortable to spend time with him.

  41. Relationally, it's possible that it meant he would maybe never marry,

  42. never have a family.

  43. And emotionally, psychologically, it must have been a crushing burden.

  44. His disability filling him at times with despair,

  45. at other times angry.

  46. And emotionally,

  47. at other times angry.

  48. Picture yourself standing there with them,

  49. peering down through the hole you just dug

  50. through some guy's roof.

  51. There you are,

  52. standing with them,

  53. peering down through the hole.

  54. You see the crowd jammed into the house.

  55. And Jesus looks up at you,

  56. and he looks at your friend,

  57. and he opens his mouth,

  58. and you know he's going to say it.

  59. Rise and walk.

  60. He's going to say it.

  61. Rise and walk.

  62. Man,

  63. your sins are forgiven you.

  64. And I imagine at that moment,

  65. the house went silent.

  66. And your buddy up on the roof with you,

  67. jabs you in the side and whispers,

  68. did he just say your sins are forgiven?

  69. Now,

  70. what must be going through their minds at this moment?

  71. What's going through your mind

  72. as you stare down at Jesus?

  73. I imagine partially,

  74. it must have been something like this.

  75. Well,

  76. Jesus,

  77. that's quite a nice thing to say.

  78. But we were hoping you might be able to do something about,

  79. well,

  80. you see,

  81. he is paralyzed after all.

  82. Did you notice the bed?

  83. We were thinking you might do something about his legs.

  84. But in this moment,

  85. Jesus is revealing something,

  86. not just to these friends,

  87. but to all of us.

  88. No matter what you face in life,

  89. no matter what trials or troubles you face,

  90. your greatest need,

  91. friends,

  92. is the forgiveness of sins.

  93. Now,

  94. don't get me wrong.

  95. God certainly cares about all of your other problems,

  96. and needs as well.

  97. And one day,

  98. he will make everything right.

  99. Don't we see a picture of that all over Jesus's ministry?

  100. But here,

  101. we're being graciously shown our deepest,

  102. greatest,

  103. most pernicious need.

  104. Imagine going to the doctor because for the last week or two,

  105. you've just had this nasty cough that won't go away.

  106. And it's affecting your work,

  107. and it's affecting your mood,

  108. and it's making everything just miserable.

  109. And so your doctor does a chest x-ray and discovers that sure enough,

  110. you've got a nasty case of pneumonia.

  111. But the images also happen to show something else.

  112. Something you weren't looking for,

  113. but it's clearly there on the screen.

  114. All around your lungs,

  115. your heart,

  116. even your spine.

  117. And the doctor says,

  118. we'll get you something for your cough,

  119. but your greatest need right now,

  120. we're sorry to say,

  121. is that your body is full of cancer,

  122. and we have to act immediately.

  123. And friends,

  124. that is all of our condition,

  125. spiritually speaking.

  126. Now, of course,

  127. we have trouble believing that the forgiveness of sins is our greatest need,

  128. don't we?

  129. Like that persistent,

  130. irritating cough,

  131. all of our other problems are just so much more in our face.

  132. They're just so much more inconvenient.

  133. But if we pause and consider what Jesus is telling us here,

  134. it is true,

  135. is it not?

  136. Why is the forgiveness of sins our greatest need?

  137. Well,

  138. think first.

  139. First,

  140. because sin runs deeper.

  141. If you go back to Genesis 3,

  142. you see that when sin enters the world,

  143. it breaks everything.

  144. It's the problem under all the problems.

  145. Our relationship to one another,

  146. our relationship to the created world around us,

  147. our relationship even to ourselves,

  148. all of these become broken.

  149. All of these are not the way they're supposed to be,

  150. because sin deep down has broken our relationship with God.

  151. Sin runs deeper.

  152. It's the problem under all the problems.

  153. Now,

  154. what are we not saying here?

  155. We're not saying that there's always a one-to-one connection between some specific sin in your life and some specific problem.

  156. Note that this man in Luke chapter 5 is not paralyzed because he committed some particular sin.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  157. That's not how it works.

  158. However,

  159. however,

  160. the reason we live in a world where there are things like paralysis and joblessness and loneliness,

  161. the reason why all these things afflict us is because the world has fallen.

  162. The problem of sin runs deeper.

  163. It's down underneath them all.

  164. And fixing all those other problems won't actually solve this one.

  165. When I was in high school,

  166. I thought that if I could just fix the problem of not having a driver's license,

  167. my life would be radically better.

  168. Just think of the freedom I would know.

  169. No longer waiting for my mom to pick me up with our dopey brown station wagon.

  170. I would drive the dopey brown station wagon.

  171. And I would take out all the seats in the middle and I would pile my friends in.

  172. And sheer unending bliss would be the result.

  173. And of course,

  174. once I got my driver's license,

  175. I realized it wasn't so.

  176. It's a trite example,

  177. I know,

  178. but haven't you seen that to be true in much greater areas of your life?

  179. You get the job,

  180. but you still struggle with a sense of purpose.

  181. You get the spouse,

  182. but you still wrestle with loneliness.

  183. You get the fame,

  184. but it doesn't take away your insecurity.

  185. You get the health,

  186. but your body still deteriorates

  187. and your end will still come.

  188. There's something deeper that's wrong with us.

  189. There's something deeper that needs to be put right.

  190. But the problem of sin not only runs deeper,

  191. it also lasts longer.

  192. I wonder how long this man and Luke had been confined to his bed.

  193. Do you think five years?

  194. Do you think maybe 10 years?

  195. Had his entire adult life been one of paralysis?

  196. And yet friends,

  197. the truth is that the alienation from God

  198. that sin brings

  199. won't last

  200. just 70, 80, or even 90 years.

  201. It will last for eternity.

  202. Sin is a problem

  203. with eternal consequences

  204. because it is an offense against an eternal God.

  205. But third,

  206. sin not only runs deeper

  207. and lasts longer,

  208. sin also costs more.

  209. And here's what I mean by that.

  210. I mean that sin keeps us

  211. from our greatest joy.

  212. You and I were created

  213. not just to have whole bodies

  214. and loving relationships

  215. and meaningful work.

  216. You and I were created friends

  217. to have fellowship with God.

  218. Picture it.

  219. From all eternity,

  220. God the Father,

  221. the Son,

  222. and the Holy Spirit

  223. encompassing one another

  224. in perfect love and joy.

  225. Three in one.

  226. One in three.

  227. And like a great symphony

  228. pouring out of the concert hall doors

  229. and into the streets,

  230. God made us to enter into His company.

  231. To have our hearts full of His music.

  232. To know that love and joy

  233. and to reflect it into the world

  234. with our own part to play.

  235. Friends,

  236. God made us to know Him.

  237. To know Him who is perfect in every way.

  238. Without limit and without reserve.

  239. The one who is not just the cause

  240. and the source of all joy,

  241. but the one who is very joy itself.

  242. Do you see why the forgiveness of sins

  243. is our greatest need?

  244. Do you see why Jesus reveals this to us?

  245. Because it's possible to have

  246. every earthly joy

  247. and yet to lose fellowship

  248. with joy itself.

  249. Let me make one application

  250. before moving to our second main point

  251. and the rest of the passage.

  252. Friends, I wonder if you can see yourself

  253. in this man's experience.

  254. If so, do you see how God can use

  255. some difficulty in your life

  256. to get down

  257. to something much deeper?

  258. This man's paralysis

  259. opens the window

  260. to Jesus' forgiveness

  261. in his life.

  262. And not just his life,

  263. but the lives of those around him.

  264. Would his friends

  265. ever have brought him to Jesus

  266. had he been able to walk?

  267. Would he have ever realized

  268. his need?

  269. Of course, his disability

  270. wasn't in itself

  271. a good thing.

  272. The things that are wrong

  273. with our world

  274. aren't in themselves good.

  275. And one day,

  276. God will eradicate

  277. all of them.

  278. But until that day,

  279. God is able to use them.

  280. He's able to take them

  281. and to use them

  282. and to show us

  283. our deepest needs.

  284. And ultimately,

  285. through them,

  286. to bring about

  287. our eternal good.

  288. This week,

  289. Greg was telling me

  290. about a talk he attended

  291. last week

  292. with David Brooks,

  293. the New York Times columnist.

  294. And Brooks was saying

  295. how he's interviewed

  296. a lot of people,

  297. asking them,

  298. what are the major things

  299. in your life

  300. that have really shaped you?

  301. Or what are the events

  302. that have really forged you

  303. in a meaningful way?

  304. And perhaps not surprisingly,

  305. he found

  306. that no one talks about

  307. that wonderful vacation

  308. to Hawaii.

  309. or that delightful getaway

  310. in the mountains.

  311. Those weren't the events

  312. that had a life-shaping,

  313. life-transforming effect.

  314. No, most of the time,

  315. it's the hard things

  316. that change and shape us.

  317. It's difficult things

  318. that open us up

  319. in a way that nothing will.

  320. So friends,

  321. I know this sounds

  322. very strange,

  323. but don't squander

  324. your hardships.

  325. It's so easy

  326. to just get angry

  327. and to just grow bitter

  328. and to just want

  329. to get it over with

  330. as quickly as possible.

  331. And know,

  332. to be sure,

  333. God in his mercy

  334. hears all of your cries,

  335. but also seek

  336. and ask God,

  337. what are you showing me

  338. through this?

  339. What are you teaching me?

  340. What are you forging in me

  341. in and through this experience?

  342. This could be the window

  343. God uses

  344. to open up

  345. a whole new depth

  346. of knowing him,

  347. a whole new depth

  348. of heart change,

  349. a whole new means

  350. of reaching those around you.

  351. You know,

  352. we often think

  353. if this or that problem

  354. were fixed,

  355. then I could get on

  356. with my life

  357. and follow God

  358. and serve Jesus.

  359. But actually,

  360. friends,

  361. this may be your moment

  362. when God is ready

  363. to do his greatest work

  364. through you.

  365. You may not get

  366. the physical healing

  367. this man got,

  368. but God still might be

  369. in the process

  370. of radically transforming

  371. you nonetheless.

  372. So this passage

  373. reveals our greatest need,

  374. the forgiveness of sins.

  375. But second,

  376. it also reveals

  377. our greatest doubt.

  378. Look again at verse 21.

  379. And the scribes

  380. and the Pharisees

  381. began to question,

  382. saying,

  383. who is this

  384. who speaks blasphemies?

  385. Who can forgive sins

  386. but God alone?

  387. When Jesus perceived

  388. their thoughts,

  389. he answered them,

  390. why do you question

  391. in your hearts?

  392. Which is easier,

  393. to say your sins

  394. are forgiven you

  395. or to say rise and walk,

  396. but that you may know

  397. that the Son of Man

  398. has authority on earth

  399. to forgive sins.

  400. He said to the man

  401. who was paralyzed,

  402. I say to you,

  403. rise,

  404. pick up your bed

  405. and go home.

  406. Now the Pharisees,

  407. of course,

  408. are completely correct.

  409. Only God can forgive sins.

  410. Why?

  411. Because sin,

  412. properly speaking,

  413. is vertical.

  414. It is rejecting

  415. and rebelling

  416. against God,

  417. our creator.

  418. Imagine a married couple

  419. sitting down

  420. with a counselor

  421. and they sit down

  422. and they just start

  423. to pour out

  424. their grievances

  425. against each other.

  426. He did this,

  427. she did this,

  428. oh yeah,

  429. he does this,

  430. oh yeah,

  431. well she does this.

  432. And this goes on

  433. for 15 minutes,

  434. 20 minutes.

  435. And then finally,

  436. when they begin

  437. to quiet down,

  438. the counselor

  439. looks at the wife

  440. and looks at the husband

  441. and says,

  442. I've heard your complaints

  443. and I want you to know

  444. I forgive you.

  445. They're going to find

  446. another counselor,

  447. right?

  448. Something is fundamentally

  449. wrong with that picture.

  450. Of course,

  451. he or she,

  452. that counselor,

  453. doesn't have the right

  454. to forgive.

  455. They're not the offended party.

  456. And friends,

  457. when it comes to our sin,

  458. our offense against God,

  459. yes,

  460. it might have effects

  461. that go all across horizontally,

  462. but the forgiveness of sin,

  463. only God has the authority,

  464. the right to forgive those.

  465. Which means that Jesus' claim

  466. here in Luke 5

  467. is simply and undeniably radical.

  468. In this moment,

  469. he has closed off from us

  470. so many of the explanations

  471. that we want to

  472. or that we try

  473. to put on him.

  474. A great teacher,

  475. we think.

  476. Perhaps even a great

  477. miracle worker.

  478. But Jesus has just declared

  479. the authority

  480. to forgive sins.

  481. And who can forgive sins

  482. but God alone?

  483. Do you see how Jesus

  484. is driving us

  485. into a corner here,

  486. friends?

  487. He's pushing us up

  488. against the doubt,

  489. the question

  490. that is the most important

  491. one of all.

  492. Does this man,

  493. Jesus,

  494. have the authority

  495. to forgive my sins?

  496. Can he be the answer

  497. to my greatest need?

  498. And if so,

  499. what does that mean

  500. about who this man

  501. truly is?

  502. Of course,

  503. the Pharisees here

  504. dismiss the possibility

  505. immediately.

  506. Only God can forgive sins

  507. and they also happen

  508. to know where

  509. and how God forgives sins.

  510. Thank you very much.

  511. God forgives sins

  512. at the temple

  513. through the sacrificial system.

  514. You see,

  515. the Pharisaical mindset

  516. has everything

  517. under control.

  518. I do my best

  519. to keep the law

  520. and when I mess up,

  521. I take care of things

  522. at the temple.

  523. Who doesn't need

  524. a little forgiveness

  525. every now and then

  526. after all?

  527. No one's perfect.

  528. So I do my duty,

  529. I perform my sacrifices,

  530. and I take care of it.

  531. But you see,

  532. they failed to see

  533. the real point

  534. of the sacrificial system

  535. at the temple.

  536. That whole business

  537. was meant to point

  538. beyond itself.

  539. After all,

  540. how could the sacrifice

  541. of a mere animal

  542. put sinful human beings

  543. right before a holy God?

  544. And doesn't the fact

  545. that those sacrifices

  546. have to be repeated

  547. year after year after year

  548. show that they were

  549. insufficient for the task?

  550. No, friends.

  551. The temple was a signpost

  552. that God set up

  553. of something greater

  554. to come.

  555. It was a signal,

  556. it was a sign,

  557. it was a pointer

  558. that God would come

  559. and do something

  560. in the future

  561. to put us right

  562. once and for all.

  563. But the Pharisees

  564. can't see it.

  565. And so often

  566. we miss it too,

  567. don't we?

  568. We think we have

  569. everything under control.

  570. I'll do my best.

  571. And when I mess up,

  572. I'll go to church

  573. and take care of it.

  574. After all,

  575. no one's perfect.

  576. But we fail to see

  577. how serious

  578. sin actually is.

  579. We don't have it

  580. under control.

  581. It isn't something

  582. we can just handle

  583. with a little

  584. church attendance here

  585. and a few good works there.

  586. It isn't a cough.

  587. It's a cancer.

  588. It's down in your bones

  589. and you need to be rescued.

  590. And only God can forgive.

  591. Well, okay, we think.

  592. So the Pharisees

  593. had it wrong

  594. trying to control God.

  595. But why can't God

  596. just forgive?

  597. I mean, if he is good,

  598. why doesn't he just

  599. say the word

  600. and forgive our sins?

  601. Why is there any need

  602. for Jesus?

  603. But then again, friends,

  604. does anyone just say

  605. the word

  606. when they truly forgive?

  607. Isn't forgiveness

  608. always costly?

  609. If I borrow your copy

  610. of Luther's commentary

  611. on Galatians

  612. because, hey,

  613. it is the 500th anniversary

  614. of the Reformation

  615. after all,

  616. why not catch up

  617. on a little Reformation reading?

  618. If I borrowed

  619. your prized copy

  620. of Luther's commentary

  621. on Galatians

  622. and I carelessly

  623. drop it into the bathtub,

  624. utterly ruining it,

  625. there are really

  626. only two options, right?

  627. Either I pay

  628. to replace the book

  629. or you forgive me

  630. and you absorb the cost.

  631. But either way,

  632. someone pays.

  633. Someone bears

  634. the cost of the wrong.

  635. And that's true

  636. even when the offense

  637. is much more serious.

  638. If a son says hurtful

  639. or untrue things

  640. about his father,

  641. ruins his reputation,

  642. breaks his heart,

  643. what are the options?

  644. Either the father

  645. can make the son pay,

  646. I'll write him

  647. out of my will,

  648. I'll tell everyone

  649. what a selfish ingrate

  650. he is at every

  651. opportunity I get.

  652. Or the father

  653. can absorb

  654. the cost of the wrong.

  655. He can bear the pain

  656. in himself

  657. and he can forgive.

  658. You see, friends,

  659. no one just forgives,

  660. no one just says

  661. the word.

  662. Someone pays the cost.

  663. But now in verses 23

  664. and 24 of our passage,

  665. it looks like Jesus

  666. does just say the word.

  667. Which is easier to say?

  668. Your sins are forgiven

  669. or to say rise and walk?

  670. But that you may know

  671. that the Son of Man

  672. has authority on earth

  673. to forgive sins?

  674. I say to you,

  675. rise, pick up your bed

  676. and go home.

  677. Now, of course,

  678. it's easier to say

  679. your sins are forgiven you

  680. because there's no way

  681. of seeing whether or not

  682. it actually worked, right?

  683. That's Jesus' point here.

  684. The rise and walk,

  685. that one's a little easier

  686. to verify.

  687. So as a sign

  688. of his authority

  689. to say and do the former,

  690. Jesus says and does

  691. the latter.

  692. To prove he has authority

  693. to forgive sins,

  694. he heals the man

  695. of his paralysis.

  696. But we've got to push

  697. a little deeper than that,

  698. don't we?

  699. What gives Jesus

  700. the authority

  701. to speak that word

  702. of forgiveness

  703. with such ease?

  704. Man, I say to you,

  705. your sins are forgiven.

  706. Of course,

  707. Jesus is making a point

  708. about who he is.

  709. Fully human, yes,

  710. but also fully God,

  711. but there's more.

  712. Jesus can speak this word

  713. with such ease.

  714. He can pronounce forgiveness

  715. with just a word,

  716. not just because of who he is,

  717. but because of what

  718. he's come to do.

  719. Forgiveness is

  720. always costly.

  721. And that's exactly

  722. what we see

  723. as Luke's gospel unfolds.

  724. Jesus,

  725. the one who came

  726. proclaiming freedom

  727. for the captives

  728. will himself be bound.

  729. He himself

  730. will be betrayed

  731. and he will give himself up

  732. to be pinned

  733. to death on a cross.

  734. Our sins

  735. will be laid upon him

  736. and he will absorb

  737. their cost in full

  738. once and for all.

  739. Something that no

  740. mere sacrifice

  741. could ever do.

  742. And three days later,

  743. he will rise

  744. and he will appear

  745. to his disciples

  746. and he will give them

  747. no surprise,

  748. this message.

  749. Go into all the nations

  750. and proclaim

  751. the forgiveness

  752. of sins

  753. in my name.

  754. How can Jesus

  755. say the word

  756. of forgiveness

  757. to this man

  758. in Luke 5?

  759. What gives him

  760. the right

  761. to declare

  762. that our sins

  763. are forgiven?

  764. And what gives

  765. the church today

  766. the right

  767. to continue

  768. to speak

  769. this word

  770. of forgiveness

  771. in his name

  772. to all who

  773. put their trust

  774. in him?

  775. It's because

  776. Jesus,

  777. very God

  778. and very man,

  779. has done

  780. what no one else

  781. has

  782. or can do.

  783. he died

  784. for our sins

  785. and rose again

  786. for our justification.

  787. Friends,

  788. Jesus has

  789. the authority

  790. to forgive

  791. your sins.

  792. To speak

  793. the word

  794. of forgiveness

  795. that we need

  796. to hear.

  797. Now,

  798. as we apply

  799. this to our lives,

  800. do you know

  801. what it's like

  802. to hear that word?

  803. Maybe you're not

  804. so sure you need it.

  805. Maybe you're new

  806. to Christian things.

  807. Maybe a friend

  808. invited you along

  809. this morning.

  810. But take a look

  811. here at verse 25.

  812. And immediately

  813. the man rose up

  814. before them,

  815. picked up what

  816. he had been lying on

  817. and went home

  818. glorifying God.

  819. And amazement

  820. seized them all

  821. and they glorified God

  822. and were filled

  823. with all saying,

  824. we have seen

  825. extraordinary things today.

  826. This man's

  827. physical healing

  828. is a window

  829. into what his

  830. spiritual healing

  831. was like.

  832. He could rise.

  833. He could walk.

  834. And most of all,

  835. he could glorify

  836. God.

  837. Something had been

  838. put right with him

  839. and the God

  840. who made him

  841. such that now

  842. his relationship

  843. was one

  844. of wonder

  845. and praise.

  846. Something had

  847. been released.

  848. A key

  849. had been turned.

  850. And now

  851. he knew

  852. real freedom

  853. and real joy.

  854. You see,

  855. friends,

  856. when Jesus

  857. shows us

  858. our need

  859. for the forgiveness

  860. of sins

  861. and when we

  862. see his

  863. rightful authority

  864. to actually

  865. forgive them,

  866. the results

  867. can be surprising.

  868. Of course,

  869. it can feel

  870. differently

  871. for different people.

  872. The English writer

  873. Francis Buford

  874. describes it this way.

  875. He says,

  876. what does it feel like

  877. to feel yourself

  878. forgiven?

  879. In my experience,

  880. he says,

  881. it's like a toothache

  882. stopping

  883. because a tooth

  884. has been removed.

  885. It has the numb

  886. surprisingness

  887. of something

  888. that hurt

  889. not being there

  890. anymore.

  891. For some,

  892. it's a flood

  893. of joy.

  894. For others,

  895. it's the quiet

  896. relief

  897. of a long-standing

  898. ache

  899. finally going away.

  900. One that you

  901. had grown

  902. so accustomed

  903. to,

  904. you thought it

  905. was just part

  906. of life.

  907. the way

  908. things worked

  909. finally

  910. being let go.

  911. But underneath

  912. all of these

  913. experiences,

  914. it's the reality

  915. of being put

  916. right with God.

  917. Have you experienced

  918. this?

  919. Do you know

  920. this joy,

  921. this relief?

  922. Jesus offers

  923. it to everyone

  924. who comes to him

  925. in faith and trust.

  926. You don't need

  927. to dig a hole

  928. through a roof.

  929. You just need

  930. to go to him

  931. in prayer.

  932. The word of

  933. forgiveness

  934. stands ready

  935. for you today

  936. if you will

  937. turn and

  938. trust in him.

  939. But second,

  940. if Jesus has

  941. the authority

  942. to forgive sins,

  943. it means that

  944. we should not

  945. only trust him

  946. for ourselves,

  947. but we should

  948. also eagerly

  949. take others

  950. to him as well.

  951. Look again

  952. at verses 18

  953. and 19.

  954. Look at the

  955. length to which

  956. these friends

  957. will go in

  958. order to

  959. bring their

  960. friend to

  961. Jesus.

  962. They dug a

  963. hole through

  964. a stranger's

  965. roof.

  966. And why did

  967. they do it?

  968. What gave

  969. them the

  970. courage and

  971. the perseverance

  972. and the

  973. somewhat

  974. insanity

  975. to actually

  976. do that?

  977. Because they

  978. knew Jesus

  979. could help.

  980. They had

  981. heard the

  982. reports.

  983. They had

  984. maybe even

  985. met some

  986. of the

  987. people that

  988. Jesus had

  989. healed.

  990. And how

  991. much more,

  992. friends,

  993. can we have

  994. that same

  995. confidence today

  996. because we

  997. know him

  998. not just

  999. to be a

  1000. teacher and

  1001. not just

  1002. to be a

  1003. healer,

  1004. but we

  1005. know him

  1006. to be the

  1007. risen Lord.

  1008. Why don't I

  1009. invite my

  1010. friends to

  1011. lunch and

  1012. ask some

  1013. spiritual

  1014. questions?

  1015. Why don't I

  1016. give that

  1017. Christian book

  1018. to my

  1019. neighbor who

  1020. I've been

  1021. spending time

  1022. with?

  1023. Why don't I

  1024. invite my

  1025. roommate to

  1026. come to

  1027. church?

  1028. Friends,

  1029. if Jesus

  1030. does have

  1031. the authority

  1032. to forgive

  1033. sins,

  1034. then surely

  1035. we can be

  1036. confident that

  1037. he is exactly

  1038. who our

  1039. friends need

  1040. to meet,

  1041. no matter

  1042. what it

  1043. takes to

  1044. get him

  1045. there.

  1046. And you

  1047. might need

  1048. to take

  1049. the long

  1050. road around.

  1051. You might

  1052. have to

  1053. climb a

  1054. building or

  1055. two.

  1056. You might

  1057. have to

  1058. circumvent

  1059. a doubt

  1060. or two.

  1061. But no

  1062. matter how

  1063. patient or

  1064. how resourceful

  1065. we need to

  1066. be,

  1067. we can be

  1068. confident that

  1069. Jesus can and

  1070. does meet

  1071. us in our

  1072. need.

  1073. He has the

  1074. authority to

  1075. forgive sins.

  1076. So friends,

  1077. take this

  1078. message with

  1079. you.

  1080. Our greatest

  1081. need has been

  1082. met and our

  1083. greatest doubt

  1084. has been

  1085. answered.

  1086. Jesus has

  1087. the authority

  1088. to forgive

  1089. sins.

  1090. The crack

  1091. in everything

  1092. is being

  1093. mended.

  1094. Though we

  1095. are sinners,

  1096. in Jesus we

  1097. can be

  1098. declared right

  1099. with God.

  1100. So like

  1101. these people

  1102. in this

  1103. passage,

  1104. glorify him

  1105. with all

  1106. and let

  1107. no crowd

  1108. keep you

  1109. from coming

  1110. to him.

  1111. Let's

  1112. pray.

  1113. Lord Jesus,

  1114. we are

  1115. thankful

  1116. and we

  1117. are humbled

  1118. by the fact

  1119. that you

  1120. have come

  1121. and you

  1122. have declared

  1123. the forgiveness

  1124. of our

  1125. sins.

  1126. Help us

  1127. to embrace

  1128. this deep

  1129. down in

  1130. our hearts

  1131. so that we

  1132. too might

  1133. glorify you

  1134. with all

  1135. and know

  1136. the freedom

  1137. that it

  1138. brings.

  1139. Amen.

  1140. Amen.
