  1. 12 through 49. That's page 862 in the Pew Bible. Go ahead and turn there with me. Luke chapter 6

    Luke 6:12–49

  2. verses 12 through 49. We're looking this morning at a large block of Jesus's teaching.

  3. People will often acknowledge that Jesus was a great moral or spiritual teacher,

  4. but how often have we actually taken a close look at what he actually taught?

  5. Well, that's what we're going to do just here in Luke chapter 6. Since this is a long text,

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  6. I won't read it all at first like we normally do. Instead, we'll just kind of walk through the text

  7. this morning section by section, and we'll see together here what Jesus taught. So let's pray

  8. as we turn to God's word, and then we'll pick up in verses 12 through 16. Let's pray.

  9. Our Lord Jesus, indeed you are a good shepherd. You lead us, you feed us,

  10. you protect us. And we know that you do that all by your Holy Spirit through your word. So we ask,

  11. Lord, that you would indeed teach us and shepherd us and guide us this morning as your church,

  12. as your flock, as we gather around your word. Hungry, Lord, to hear a word from you.

  13. Lord, wanting to know what direction our lives as your people should take. God, thank you for the gift

  14. of your speaking word, of your speaking voice that continues to be the Lord of the church today.

  15. Lord, we acknowledge you as such. Pray that you would meet with us this morning

  16. and guide our thoughts as we walk through this text together. For your sake, amen.

  17. Amen. All right. Luke chapter six. Let's start with verses 12 through 19.

  18. In those days, he, Jesus, went out to the mountain to pray. And all night, he continued in prayer to God.

  19. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them 12 whom he named apostles.

  20. Simon, whom he named Peter and Andrew, his brother, and James and John and Philip and Bartholomew and

  21. Matthew and Thomas and James, the son of Alphaeus and Simon, who was called the Zealot and Judas,

  22. the son of James and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. And he came down with them and stood on a

  23. level place with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and

  24. Jerusalem and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases.

  25. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured and all the crowd sought to touch him

  26. for power came out from him and healed them all.

  27. Now, before we dive into the block of Jesus's teaching, starting in verse 20, we have to get

  28. this context that we just read because Jesus isn't just going to sort of lay out some general

  29. moral and spiritual principles here. No, he's doing something much more specific. And what is that?

  30. Well, think of it this way. One writer put it this way. He said, imagine you're a school teacher

  31. and you're out on the playground after school and a large crowd of kids are there and they're

  32. throwing a football around, a whole group of them. And then you walk over and you start counting them

  33. off. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11. And you gather them in a group.

  34. Well, what have you just done? What are you doing? Obviously you just counted off a football team,

  35. right? There they are. 11 players. You're ready to go. You're organizing a team. You're starting a game

  36. time to turn this mess into an actual organized sport.

  37. And you see, when Jews, when Jesus chooses out 12 of his disciples and gives them a unique role as

  38. apostles, you see, it would have been just as clear to his contemporaries, what he was doing as that

  39. playground example is to us. Of course, he wasn't sort of putting together a football team or a sports

  40. team. No, Jesus was reestablishing and renewing the people of God.

  41. 12, of course, wasn't just a nice, even number. It was the number of the ancient tribes of Israel.

  42. Jesus appoints 12 apostles as a sign of what he's come to do, that he's come to renew God's people,

  43. that this group of 12 is going to be the seed, the representative start of the new people of God

  44. around him and his ministry. And in renewing God's people, Jesus is going to bring God's blessing

  45. to the world. And sure enough, in verse 17, that's exactly what happens, isn't it? He brings the 12

  46. down with him and along with a great crowd of his disciples, they minister to the multitude of the

  47. people who've come at this point in Luke's gospel from all over, Jews and Gentiles.

  48. Now, as we approach a passage like this, it's sometimes good to ask, who are we?

  49. Who are you and I in a passage like this? Where are we in this story?

  50. Well, I hope you would agree that we're obviously not Jesus in this story, right? Okay. And you know,

  51. we're not even the 12, really. They had a unique role in redemptive history.

  52. But we are like this large crowd of disciples gathering around Jesus in the 12, ready to hear

  53. his instructions to us, asking and learning from Jesus, what does it mean to be his people, to be

  54. on mission with him? How are we to be his followers? How are we to be the church that Jesus at this point

  55. in his ministry is launching out? That's where we are. Or maybe some of us, maybe we're not quite in

  56. the group of disciples yet. Maybe some of us are in the multitude, curious about Jesus. You've heard

  57. some rumors about him. Your friends seem to keep talking about him and they keep coming to this

  58. weird thing called church. So you've decided to come along and listen in. And you're considering

  59. for yourself whether you too will take up his call to follow him, to be a part of his new people.

  60. So the teaching here in Luke six, then when we put it in context, is really about what it means to be

  61. the church called by Jesus to head into the world after him on mission, to be the renewed people of

  62. God. And so then as we do the same, even today here in New Haven, what does it mean? What does Jesus

  63. have to say to us as Trinity Baptist church? What does it look like for us to be the church on mission?

  64. That's what Luke six is about. And the first thing that Jesus has to say to us in this regard,

  65. as we think about being the church on mission, following Jesus, our King, the first thing that Jesus

  66. says to us is, don't be afraid to lose everything. Lose everything. This is verses 20 through 26. And he

  67. lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said, blessed are you who are poor for yours is the

  68. kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you

  69. who weep now for you shall laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and

  70. revile you and spurn your name as evil on account of the son of man. Rejoice in that day and leap for

  71. joy for behold, your reward is great in heaven for so their fathers did to the prophets.

  72. But woe to you who are rich for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now

  73. for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now for you shall mourn and weep. Woe to you when all

  74. people speak well of you for so their fathers did to the false prophets.

  75. Not a bad way to grab attention at the beginning of a sermon, is it?

  76. Now to understand what Jesus is saying here, notice first his audience. Who is Jesus speaking to?

  77. Not just anyone who happens to be poor in verse 20. No, he's speaking to his disciples,

  78. to those who have already responded to his call to follow him. And notice second in verse 22,

  79. why they're in this condition. Why are they poor and hungry and sorrowful and rejected?

  80. Verse 22 says that it's on account of the son of man.

  81. So Jesus is painting a picture of discipleship here. That to genuinely follow him, to really be

  82. the church, to be his people on mission is going to be genuinely costly.

  83. But Jesus says, if you're poor and hungry, if you become sad and rejected on my account,

  84. if you find that following me puts you on the margins, socially excluded, financially strained,

  85. emotionally taxed, if that's true of you because you're following me, then in reality,

  86. you're blessed. You've got the good life. In other words, if you have me, even though you have

  87. nothing else, the reality is you ultimately have everything. Yours is the kingdom of God.

  88. And then Jesus puts it in stark relief for us by flipping it around. Let's say you have everything

  89. worldly speaking, wealth, food, laughter, acceptance, and yet to hang on to those things,

  90. you forsake him. Instead of him pushing you to the margins of society, you push him to the margins

  91. of your life. In that case, Jesus says, woe to you. Which was how the Old Testament prophets would

  92. announce the coming disaster of living apart from the living God. Woe to you.

  93. And so you see, friends, the church on mission, you and I, we are meant to have a whole new set of

  94. priorities. No longer does financial security or relational comfort or social acceptance drive our

  95. decisions. That's not our agenda anymore. We can hold those things with a loose grip. In fact,

  96. we can even give those things up for the sake of being faithful to Christ and his kingdom.

  97. And I hope you see that that means we will treat others very differently. How we treat others will

  98. be very different. After all, if worldly status and wealth aren't what matter in God's kingdom,

  99. if that's not what drives our agenda, why would we end up then showing favoritism toward those who are

  100. more wealthy or socially connected? In fact, Luke's gospel has shown us more often than not

  101. that it's the socially marginalized whom God seems most often to call and to use.

  102. Just think of the first two chapters of Luke's gospel. Who does God choose to work through?

  103. You ready? A barren woman, a poor virgin, a bunch of working class shepherds out in the fields,

  104. an elderly man, an elderly widow. That's just the first two chapters.

  105. Through whom does God's kingdom break into the world?

  106. Not exactly the rich and powerful, are they?

  107. Friends, God often delights to display his grace and power through human weakness.

  108. Not many of you were wise or powerful or of noble birth when God called you,

  109. Paul says in 1 Corinthians chapter 1,

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  110. so that our boast might not be in ourselves, but in the Lord.

  111. Now, of course, that's not to say that being wealthy or socially connected is a bad thing.

  112. Because, friends, we all have to admit that compared to the rest of the world,

  113. all of us sitting in this room are fabulously wealthy.

  114. Are we not?

  115. Abraham and Job, Old Testament saints, were both wealthy men.

  116. What is Jesus showing us?

  117. He's showing us that these things aren't ultimate.

  118. They aren't the driving and deciding factor in God's kingdom.

  119. They don't drive our agenda.

  120. And they don't drive who we favor.

  121. If following Christ, if being the church means giving up wealth and social status,

  122. giving it away so that others can flourish,

  123. if being the church means giving up wealth and status for Christ's sake, for others' sake,

  124. then so be it.

  125. Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of heaven.

  126. But that is much easier said than done, isn't it?

  127. Of course, there are many parts of the world today where allegiance to Christ does result in very obvious poverty and hunger,

  128. in being disowned from one's family,

  129. fired from your work,

  130. even physically persecuted.

  131. But even for us here in our part of the world,

  132. what if your commitment to Christ in your job field, in your workplace, for instance,

  133. also means walking a very narrow road?

  134. Maybe there are widespread practices in your particular field that you won't engage in.

  135. Maybe you're in the medical field,

  136. and you won't perform procedures that compromise the dignity of human life,

  137. whether at the beginning or at the end.

  138. Maybe you're in the business world,

  139. and you won't round the numbers to make things look just a little bit better at the end of the quarter.

  140. These are incredibly hard decisions to face, aren't they?

  141. When everyone around you, supervisor included,

  142. is simply expecting certain actions, certain behaviors, certain attitudes,

  143. because this is how the world works.

  144. And to go against the grain means not just that your reputation is at stake,

  145. and whether people invite you to happy hour after work.

  146. To go against the grain could possibly cost you your very job itself.

  147. And might even come to a crisis point,

  148. where we have to decide between faithfulness to Christ

  149. and the prospect of rejection, exclusion,

  150. maybe even hunger and financial loss.

  151. And friends, it's at moments like these when we need to hear

  152. the comforting voice of our Savior saying,

  153. blessed are you who are poor,

  154. for yours is the kingdom of God.

  155. blessed are you who are poor,

  156. and hungry, and sorrowful, and rejected on my account.

  157. For you will be full,

  158. and you will laugh,

  159. and you will be in my kingdom.

  160. Even if you lose it all,

  161. you are a part of a kingdom that cannot fail.

  162. And whatever you lose here for his sake

  163. will be nothing compared to what you gain on that day.

  164. So Jesus' words here are meant to actually be a comfort

  165. and an encouragement to us.

  166. That even if discipleship is costly,

  167. don't be afraid.

  168. Don't be afraid.

  169. Don't be afraid even to lose everything.

  170. That's the first thing Jesus is teaching us here.

  171. But he doesn't stop there.

  172. If following him means rejection or exclusion,

  173. how are we going to respond to those

  174. who reject and exclude us?

  175. How should we treat those

  176. who will inevitably come against us,

  177. possibly even hate us on account of Christ?

  178. And that's why Jesus continues his second big point

  179. in verse 27 with the word, but.

  180. You'll be rejected,

  181. but here's how you're going to respond.

  182. But I say to you who hear,

  183. love your enemies.

  184. Do you see what Jesus is saying?

  185. What does it mean to be the church on mission?

  186. Not just to lose everything,

  187. but then to love those who take it from you.

  188. Look at verses 27 through 38.

  189. But I say to you who hear,

  190. love your enemies.

  191. Do good to those who hate you.

  192. Bless those who curse you.

  193. Pray for those who abuse you.

  194. To the one who strikes you on the cheek,

  195. offer the other also.

  196. And from the one who takes away your cloak,

  197. do not withhold your tunic either.

  198. Give to everyone who begs from you.

  199. And from one who takes away your goods,

  200. do not demand them back.

  201. And as you wish that others would do to you,

  202. do so to them.

  203. If you love those who love you,

  204. what benefit is that to you?

  205. For even sinners love those who love them.

  206. And if you do good to those who do good to you,

  207. what benefit is that to you?

  208. For even sinners do the same.

  209. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive,

  210. what credit is that to you?

  211. Even sinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount.

  212. But love your enemies and do good and lend,

  213. expecting nothing in return.

  214. And your reward will be great.

  215. And you will be sons of the Most High,

  216. for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

  217. Be merciful, be merciful,

  218. even as your Father is merciful.

  219. Judge not, and you will not be judged.

  220. Condemn not, and you will not be condemned.

  221. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

  222. Give, and it will be given to you.

  223. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together,

  224. running over will be put into your lap.

  225. For with the measure you use,

  226. it will be measured back to you.

  227. So this section of Jesus' teaching

  228. breaks down into two parts.

  229. First, the command.

  230. Second, the motivation.

  231. The command's obviously found in verse 27 through 31, isn't it?

  232. Love your enemies.

  233. And then, lest we're uncertain what that looks like,

  234. if it just sort of means

  235. having a nice fuzzy feeling in our heart,

  236. Jesus immediately gives us some examples.

  237. Think of someone who hates you.

  238. Do good to them.

  239. Think of someone who's cursing you.

  240. Bless them.

  241. Who's abusing you?

  242. Pray for them.

  243. Who's slapping you on the cheek

  244. because they're so offended by you?

  245. Who's taking the clothes off your back?

  246. Who's greedily demanding your goods,

  247. even forcefully taking them from you?

  248. How should you respond?

  249. Our natural response is to retaliate, isn't it?

  250. You hate me, I'll hate you.

  251. You hurt me, I'll hurt you.

  252. We pay them back.

  253. It's justice, right?

  254. But no, Jesus says,

  255. that's not how you're going to respond.

  256. You're not going to be a victim

  257. and get sucked down into the cycle of retaliation.

  258. You're actually going to break the cycle.

  259. In exchange for their evil,

  260. you're going to return good.

  261. Now, this doesn't mean

  262. that you should never remove yourself

  263. from physical harm or abuse.

  264. Think of the example of the Apostle Paul.

  265. Paul was often secretly snuck out of town

  266. to safety, wasn't he,

  267. when he was in danger

  268. of being harmed or persecuted.

  269. So it's okay to remove yourself

  270. from being physically harmed.

  271. And it doesn't mean

  272. that the right response

  273. to someone harming you

  274. can't be involving the police

  275. or the legal system.

  276. Again, the Apostle Paul's a helpful example.

  277. When necessary,

  278. Paul used his legal status

  279. as a Roman citizen

  280. to help fledgling churches

  281. to get protection under Roman law.

  282. from physical harm

  283. and legal persecution.

  284. So, physically removing yourself

  285. from an abusive relationship,

  286. involving the legal authorities

  287. when necessary,

  288. these are completely

  289. legitimate,

  290. Christ-like responses.

  291. But,

  292. in line with what Jesus

  293. is commanding us here,

  294. as far as we are able,

  295. even if we decide

  296. to respond in those ways,

  297. it should never be done

  298. with a spiteful heart,

  299. an attitude that makes

  300. the other person

  301. want to pay.

  302. What might that look like?

  303. Just this week in small group,

  304. someone mentioned

  305. how at work,

  306. a colleague of hers

  307. had been sending text messages

  308. around the office,

  309. basically maligning

  310. her character

  311. for no good reason.

  312. And these messages

  313. eventually fell into the hands

  314. of their mutual supervisor.

  315. Oops.

  316. And the supervisor

  317. was actually ready

  318. to fire the person

  319. who sent the messages.

  320. So, they called

  321. our small group member

  322. into her office

  323. and said,

  324. look,

  325. what this person done

  326. is a terminable offense.

  327. Do you want me to fire her?

  328. Now, what would you have done?

  329. What would it look like

  330. for you to bless those

  331. who curse you

  332. in this instance?

  333. Well, I think by God's grace,

  334. she decided to not recommend

  335. the supervisor fire this person.

  336. And rather,

  337. she showed

  338. radical mercy.

  339. How about you, friends?

  340. Is there a neighbor

  341. or a roommate

  342. or a family member,

  343. a spouse,

  344. maybe even a fellow church member

  345. that Jesus is calling you

  346. to show this kind of radical

  347. mercy toward?

  348. Of course, at first,

  349. this sort of behavior

  350. always seems impractical

  351. and absurd and weak.

  352. And yet,

  353. doesn't the 20th century

  354. show us examples

  355. where the church acting

  356. in this kind of weakness

  357. is actually true strength?

  358. Martin Luther King Jr.

  359. stands up to racism

  360. and segregation in America.

  361. The truth and reconciliation movement

  362. in South Africa

  363. responds to apartheid.

  364. Not through violence

  365. or retribution,

  366. but through actions

  367. that stop the downward cycle

  368. and even reverse it.

  369. We see the power

  370. of this sort of response

  371. in the earliest days

  372. of the church as well.

  373. After Stephen gives

  374. his groundbreaking speech

  375. in Acts 7,

  376. do you remember what happens?

  377. Jerusalem doesn't repent

  378. and the leaders

  379. don't all become Christians.

  380. No, what do they do?

  381. They grab him

  382. and they drag him out of town

  383. and they pick up stones

  384. to execute him.

  385. And Stephen responds

  386. not by cursing them,

  387. but by praying.

  388. Do you remember

  389. what he prayed?

  390. Lord,

  391. do not hold this sin

  392. against them.

  393. Just as Jesus commands,

  394. Stephen prays

  395. for those who persecute him.

  396. And what's the result?

  397. A young,

  398. zealous Pharisee

  399. named Saul

  400. is present

  401. approving Stephen's death.

  402. But in no short time,

  403. Jesus will reveal himself

  404. to Paul.

  405. And what Saul

  406. originally witnessed

  407. in Stephen,

  408. Saul comes to taste

  409. for himself

  410. when he finally

  411. gets a glimpse

  412. of the risen Lord.

  413. He comes to a personal

  414. knowledge

  415. of Christ's mercy

  416. and grace.

  417. You see,

  418. Stephen's radical love

  419. became part

  420. of what actually

  421. converts

  422. the church's

  423. greatest missionary

  424. and theologian,

  425. the apostle Paul.

  426. So what's the command?

  427. Love your enemies.

  428. And what's the motivation?

  429. Again,

  430. Jesus mentions

  431. a great reward

  432. in verse 35.

  433. And in verse 38,

  434. that great reward

  435. is described

  436. with an image

  437. from the marketplace.

  438. A giant heaping

  439. measure of grain

  440. that's been shaken

  441. and pressed down

  442. and it's spilling over

  443. and then poured

  444. into your lap.

  445. In the ancient world,

  446. you would sometimes

  447. fold up sort of

  448. the front layer

  449. of your robe

  450. to create a bit

  451. of a carrying sack

  452. and then they would

  453. just dump stuff

  454. into it

  455. and you could

  456. carry it home.

  457. That's what Jesus

  458. is talking about here.

  459. That's the image

  460. he's using.

  461. And isn't this

  462. a very earthy image

  463. for what heavenly reward

  464. will be like?

  465. Grain

  466. spilling over

  467. the edges

  468. of the cup,

  469. weighing down

  470. your robe.

  471. It's no surprise

  472. that Jesus uses

  473. such an earthy image

  474. because what do we know

  475. about the kingdom of God?

  476. The kingdom of God

  477. holds out

  478. a new creation,

  479. friends.

  480. It's not leaving

  481. behind this material life

  482. but it's God

  483. eventually healing it

  484. and transforming it

  485. and transfiguring it

  486. in the way

  487. it was always

  488. meant to be.

  489. You see,

  490. living against

  491. the grain now

  492. is really living

  493. with the grain

  494. of the age

  495. that's coming

  496. and cannot be stopped.

  497. I didn't even

  498. intend that

  499. to be a pun

  500. by the way.

  501. The grain

  502. of the...

  503. Never mind.

  504. But in addition

  505. to the great reward

  506. he had something

  507. even more

  508. in verse 35.

  509. What does he say?

  510. He says,

  511. you will be

  512. sons of the most high.

  513. In other words,

  514. your status

  515. as the children

  516. of God

  517. will be confirmed.

  518. Your family likeness

  519. will come shining through

  520. just as God's kindness

  521. extends

  522. to the ungrateful

  523. and evil

  524. so you

  525. when you love

  526. your enemies

  527. will be acting

  528. like the children

  529. of God

  530. that you are.

  531. Of course,

  532. Jesus isn't saying

  533. that these actions

  534. are going to make you

  535. sons and daughters

  536. of God, right?

  537. Only the gracious

  538. regenerating work

  539. of the Holy Spirit

  540. can do that

  541. as we respond

  542. in faith

  543. to Christ's death

  544. and resurrection.

  545. However,

  546. as those who have been

  547. made God's children

  548. there's a deep joy

  549. that comes

  550. in pleasing

  551. and in resembling

  552. our Heavenly Father.

  553. What's the motivation

  554. to love our enemies

  555. in this radical

  556. non-reciprocal way?

  557. that we get to be

  558. like our Heavenly Father.

  559. That we get to be

  560. imitators of God.

  561. That we get to display

  562. His character

  563. and mercy

  564. to the world.

  565. That we get to

  566. participate a little more

  567. in His being

  568. and likeness.

  569. That we get to live out

  570. the life of the sons

  571. and daughters

  572. that we are.

  573. So this is Jesus'

  574. second point.

  575. What does it look like

  576. to be the church?

  577. Don't be afraid

  578. to lose everything.

  579. And then

  580. even to love those

  581. who take it from you.

  582. But Jesus isn't done.

  583. There's one more thing

  584. we need to get straight.

  585. And perhaps you've already

  586. started to feel it.

  587. I have walking through

  588. this passage again

  589. this morning.

  590. Listen to what Jesus

  591. is saying.

  592. Blessed are you

  593. who are poor.

  594. Love your enemies.

  595. Friends, I don't know

  596. about you,

  597. but hasn't your heart

  598. been saying,

  599. but I don't want

  600. to be poor.

  601. I don't want

  602. to love my enemies.

  603. That's a bridge

  604. too far.

  605. But Jesus' sermon

  606. ends without any

  607. possibility of letting

  608. us off the hook.

  609. He ends with actually

  610. three interlocking

  611. parables or images

  612. that drive us

  613. to the very end

  614. of ourselves.

  615. And that becomes

  616. the last point.

  617. Lose everything.

  618. Love those who take it.

  619. And through it all,

  620. humbly acknowledge

  621. your need

  622. for grace.

  623. Let's pick up

  624. in verse 39.

  625. Jesus starts

  626. bringing things

  627. to a conclusion.

  628. He says,

  629. He also told them

  630. a parable.

  631. Can a blind man

  632. lead a blind man?

  633. Will they not both

  634. fall into a pit?

  635. A disciple's not

  636. above his teacher,

  637. but everyone,

  638. when he's fully trained,

  639. will be like his teacher.

  640. Why do you see the speck

  641. that is in your brother's eye,

  642. but do not notice

  643. the log that is

  644. in your own eye?

  645. How can you say

  646. to your brother,

  647. Brother,

  648. let me take the speck,

  649. let me take out the speck

  650. that is in your eye,

  651. when you yourself

  652. do not see the log

  653. that is in your own eye?

  654. You hypocrite.

  655. First take the log

  656. out of your own eye,

  657. and then you will see

  658. clearly to take the speck

  659. out that is in your

  660. brother's eye.

  661. For no good tree

  662. bears bad fruit,

  663. nor again does a bad tree

  664. bear good fruit.

  665. For each tree is known

  666. by its own fruit,

  667. for figs are not gathered

  668. from thorn bushes,

  669. nor are grapes picked

  670. from a bramble bush.

  671. The good person

  672. out of the good treasure

  673. of his heart

  674. produces good,

  675. and the evil person

  676. out of the evil treasure

  677. produces evil.

  678. For out of the abundance

  679. of the heart

  680. his mouth speaks.

  681. Why do you call me

  682. Lord, Lord,

  683. and not do what I tell you?

  684. Everyone who comes to me

  685. and hears my words

  686. and does them,

  687. I will show you

  688. what he's like.

  689. He's like a man

  690. building a house

  691. who dug deep

  692. and laid the foundation

  693. on the rock,

  694. and when a flood arose,

  695. a stream broke

  696. against that house

  697. and could not shake it

  698. because it had been

  699. well built.

  700. But the one who hears

  701. and does not do them

  702. is like a man

  703. who built a house

  704. on the ground

  705. without a foundation.

  706. When the stream

  707. broke against it,

  708. immediately it fell,

  709. and the ruin

  710. of that house

  711. was great.

  712. These images

  713. increase in gravity,

  714. don't they?

  715. The first,

  716. you have to admit,

  717. is a bit comical.

  718. It assumes

  719. that the disciples

  720. will be leading others

  721. and teaching others

  722. and training others.

  723. That's good.

  724. And yet there's a problem.

  725. Jesus says,

  726. how can the blind

  727. lead the blind?

  728. How can a student

  729. get above

  730. their faulty teacher?

  731. How are you going

  732. to get that speck

  733. out of your student's eye

  734. when you have a beam

  735. swinging around

  736. out of yours?

  737. I mean,

  738. imagine walking around

  739. with a giant piece

  740. of lumber

  741. protruding out of your face.

  742. And it's not just me,

  743. it's all of us.

  744. Church becomes

  745. a pretty dangerous place

  746. to hang out.

  747. You just might get

  748. hit in the head.

  749. Watch out.

  750. So we need some help,

  751. don't we?

  752. We need to do

  753. some self-examination.

  754. And we need to be open

  755. to each other's correction.

  756. But the next image

  757. is a little more serious.

  758. A good tree

  759. doesn't produce

  760. bad fruit,

  761. Jesus says.

  762. How often do we think

  763. that my bad actions,

  764. that slip of the tongue here,

  765. that burst of anger there,

  766. that small revenge

  767. over here,

  768. ah, well,

  769. those are just

  770. little slip-ups,

  771. you see.

  772. Deep down,

  773. I'm really a good person.

  774. That's me acting

  775. out of character.

  776. But friends,

  777. if the fruit

  778. coming off the tree

  779. is bad,

  780. then that tells you

  781. that something

  782. is wrong with the tree,

  783. doesn't it?

  784. The evil person

  785. out of his evil treasure

  786. produces evil.

  787. And suddenly,

  788. Jesus has stopped

  789. being funny.

  790. No more beams

  791. sticking out of eyes,

  792. now we're getting

  793. down to the heart.

  794. You need more

  795. than just a little push.

  796. You need more

  797. than just

  798. some remediation.

  799. What you need

  800. is a new heart,

  801. Jesus says.

  802. Third image.

  803. Two houses,

  804. one flood,

  805. one house stands,

  806. the other comes

  807. crashing down

  808. in ruin.

  809. And that's the image

  810. Jesus leaves us with.

  811. A house.

  812. Devastated.

  813. Utterly in shambles.

  814. And why?

  815. Because they heard

  816. Jesus' words,

  817. but didn't actually

  818. do what he said.

  819. By the way,

  820. it's quite a claim

  821. Jesus makes,

  822. isn't it?

  823. The only way

  824. to avoid

  825. utter spiritual ruin

  826. is to build your life

  827. on his words.

  828. anything or anyone

  829. else will simply

  830. not do

  831. shocking.

  832. And yet,

  833. how should we

  834. respond to this

  835. string of images

  836. that Jesus

  837. ends with?

  838. There's really

  839. only one way

  840. to respond.

  841. Humility.

  842. Doesn't Jesus

  843. remove any ground

  844. for spiritual pride

  845. in this final movement

  846. of the sermon?

  847. This is the most

  848. uncomfortable sermon

  849. conclusion I've ever

  850. heard.

  851. Who of us

  852. doesn't fall short?

  853. Who of us

  854. really does

  855. love our enemy

  856. exactly as we

  857. ourselves would like

  858. to be loved,

  859. as verse 31 says?

  860. This is how you're

  861. supposed to love them,

  862. exactly like you'd

  863. want to be loved.

  864. I mean,

  865. I can get loving

  866. my neighbor as myself,

  867. perhaps,

  868. but I'm not so sure

  869. about loving my

  870. enemy as myself.

  871. You see,

  872. friends,

  873. Jesus is pushing

  874. us here,

  875. pushing us

  876. to acknowledge

  877. our need

  878. for grace.

  879. Because the church

  880. on mission

  881. ceases

  882. to be the church

  883. at all

  884. when it forgets

  885. that it lives

  886. solely by

  887. and through

  888. grace.

  889. friends,

  890. our logs

  891. are wide

  892. and our hearts

  893. are dark

  894. and our house

  895. is built on sand.

  896. And at the end

  897. of the day,

  898. we need more

  899. than a teacher.

  900. We need a

  901. redeemer.

  902. And that's

  903. who Jesus is.

  904. Look at this

  905. sermon.

  906. Who does it

  907. really describe?

  908. Whose character

  909. is on display

  910. here?

  911. Blessed are you

  912. who are poor.

  913. Jesus Christ

  914. was the one

  915. who truly

  916. became poor,

  917. friends.

  918. He left

  919. heaven

  920. to become

  921. poor

  922. and despised

  923. and rejected

  924. so that through

  925. him,

  926. we might gain

  927. heaven,

  928. though we deserve

  929. no part in it.

  930. Love your enemies,

  931. Jesus says

  932. to his disciples.

  933. And on the cross,

  934. Jesus died

  935. for his enemies.

  936. for you and me

  937. so that we could

  938. become his friends.

  939. Do you see

  940. what he's done

  941. for you?

  942. Have you let

  943. that sink in?

  944. Do you see

  945. that he's the only

  946. one who's lived

  947. this sermon

  948. perfectly

  949. and he lived

  950. it perfectly

  951. for you?

  952. how are we going

  953. to be ultimately

  954. the church

  955. on mission?

  956. Only

  957. when we live

  958. in humble

  959. dependence

  960. on grace.

  961. But if we do

  962. that

  963. by his spirit,

  964. if we live

  965. in constant

  966. dependence

  967. on grace,

  968. then we won't

  969. be afraid

  970. to lose

  971. anything.

  972. Reputation,

  973. wealth,

  974. status.

  975. Friends,

  976. if God

  977. did not

  978. spare his

  979. own son,

  980. how will

  981. he not

  982. graciously

  983. with him

  984. give us

  985. all things?

  986. And if we

  987. live

  988. in Christ's

  989. grace,

  990. we'll even

  991. find the

  992. strength

  993. to love

  994. our enemies.

  995. Because we

  996. see that in

  997. the light

  998. of the cross

  999. that I was

  1000. once an

  1001. enemy.

  1002. And he

  1003. loved me

  1004. and gave

  1005. himself for

  1006. me.

  1007. Friends,

  1008. this is the

  1009. church that

  1010. the world

  1011. desperately

  1012. needs.

  1013. Paul says

  1014. in Romans

  1015. 8,

  1016. the creation

  1017. is groaning

  1018. for the

  1019. revelation

  1020. of the

  1021. sons of

  1022. God.

  1023. Speaking

  1024. ultimately

  1025. about the

  1026. kingdom

  1027. coming in

  1028. fullness.

  1029. But isn't

  1030. it true

  1031. now?

  1032. Isn't our

  1033. city groaning

  1034. for the

  1035. church to

  1036. be the

  1037. church?

  1038. Willing to

  1039. lose,

  1040. willing to

  1041. love,

  1042. and permeated

  1043. with grace?

  1044. That's what

  1045. it looks like

  1046. to be the

  1047. church.

  1048. church.

  1049. In just

  1050. a second,

  1051. we're going

  1052. to go to

  1053. the table

  1054. and we're

  1055. going to

  1056. remember what

  1057. Jesus did

  1058. for us on

  1059. the cross.

  1060. And this,

  1061. around the

  1062. cross of

  1063. Jesus,

  1064. is where we

  1065. find the

  1066. strength and

  1067. the power

  1068. and the

  1069. resource to

  1070. actually do

  1071. this.

  1072. So as we

  1073. do so,

  1074. let's pray that

  1075. God makes us

  1076. into this kind

  1077. of church.

  1078. Not so that

  1079. people think

  1080. much of us,

  1081. but so that

  1082. they think

  1083. much of

  1084. Jesus,

  1085. who's not

  1086. just our

  1087. teacher,

  1088. but who's

  1089. our

  1090. redeemer.

  1091. Let's pray

  1092. together.

  1093. Lord Jesus,

  1094. what shocking,

  1095. startling,

  1096. and seemingly

  1097. impossible commands

  1098. you've given

  1099. us.

  1100. Lord, this

  1101. way of life

  1102. we confess

  1103. in our own

  1104. strength,

  1105. in our own

  1106. power,

  1107. in our own

  1108. thinking is

  1109. beyond our

  1110. reach.

  1111. And yet,

  1112. Lord,

  1113. and yet,

  1114. you have

  1115. given us

  1116. your own

  1117. spirit.

  1118. You have

  1119. come,

  1120. and you've

  1121. gone before

  1122. us,

  1123. becoming poor

  1124. for us,

  1125. loving us

  1126. in our

  1127. hatred of

  1128. you,

  1129. changing our

  1130. hearts,

  1131. releasing us

  1132. from a

  1133. love of

  1134. this world.

  1135. Lord,

  1136. you've given

  1137. us what we

  1138. need,

  1139. depending on

  1140. your grace,

  1141. dependent on

  1142. your grace

  1143. to go

  1144. forth and

  1145. live this

  1146. way.

  1147. So help

  1148. us to

  1149. do it,

  1150. Lord Jesus.

  1151. Help us

  1152. to be your

  1153. church on

  1154. mission,

  1155. for your

  1156. name's sake.

  1157. Amen.

  1158. I wonder

  1159. if those

  1160. who are

  1161. helping with

  1162. the Lord's

  1163. Supper would

  1164. come up.

  1165. In 1 Corinthians,

  1166. Paul says,

  1167. for you know

  1168. the grace of

  1169. our Lord Jesus

  1170. Christ,

  1171. that though he

  1172. was rich,

  1173. yet for your

  1174. sake he

  1175. became poor,

  1176. so that you

  1177. by his

  1178. poverty might

  1179. become rich.

  1180. Friends,

  1181. when we come

  1182. to the Lord's

  1183. Supper,

  1184. we're coming

  1185. again to

  1186. remember the

  1187. cross of

  1188. Jesus Christ,

  1189. where he

  1190. spent literally

  1191. everything in

  1192. order to pay

  1193. your debt in

  1194. full and to

  1195. earn for you a

  1196. righteous record

  1197. with the

  1198. Father that is

  1199. perfect in every

  1200. way.

  1201. This is what

  1202. Christ has done

  1203. and this is why

  1204. we come to the

  1205. table, to

  1206. remember it and

  1207. to take hold of

  1208. it again.

  1209. And to

  1210. confess sin in

  1211. ways in which

  1212. we've fallen

  1213. short, but to

  1214. receive again and

  1215. remember again is

  1216. grace for us.

  1217. So friends, if

  1218. you're here and

  1219. you've turned from

  1220. sin and placed

  1221. your trust in

  1222. Christ, then

  1223. you're welcome to

  1224. take this bread and

  1225. take this cup and

  1226. to remember Christ's

  1227. death with us

  1228. together.

  1229. If you're here and

  1230. you're not a

  1231. follower of Jesus,

  1232. then instead of

  1233. taking the bread and

  1234. cup, just pass them

1235. by and use this as a

  1236. time to pray.

  1237. What would it look

  1238. like for you to

  1239. build your life on

  1240. the words of

  1241. Jesus?

  1242. And not just on

  1243. the words of

  1244. Jesus, but on the

  1245. work of Jesus.

  1246. What's keeping you

  1247. from stepping over

  1248. that line?

  1249. Use this time to

  1250. do some soul

  1251. searching and take

  1252. hold of him.

  1253. So let's take the

  1254. bread first.

  1255. James, would you

  1256. pray first?
