  1. of Luke, which focus on the question of who is this Jesus and seeking to refocus our attention

  2. on him just personally and directly as we look in the gospels at his works and his words.

  3. Luke chapter 7, beginning at verse 18, let's read together.

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  4. The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, calling two of his disciples to him,

  5. sent them to the Lord saying, are you the one who is to come or shall we look for another?

  6. And when the men had come to him, they said, John the Baptist has sent us to you saying,

  7. are you the one who is to come or shall we look for another?

  8. In that hour, he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits. And on many who

  9. were blind, he bestowed sight. And he answered them, go and tell John what you have seen and heard.

  10. The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear,

  11. the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them, and blessed is the one who is

  12. not offended by me. When John's messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning

  13. John. What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind. What then did you,

  14. what then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing. Behold, those who are dressed in

  15. splendid clothing and live in luxury are in king's courts. What then did you go out to see?

  16. A prophet? Yes, I tell you. And more than a prophet, this is he of whom it is written,

  17. behold, I send my messenger before your face who will prepare your way before you.

  18. I tell you, among those born of women, none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the

  19. kingdom of God is greater than he. When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too,

  20. they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John, but the Pharisees and the

  21. lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

  22. To what then shall I compare the people of this generation? And what are they like? They are like

  23. children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, we played the flute for you,

  24. and you did not dance. We sang a dirge, and you did not weep. For John the Baptist has come eating

  25. no bread and drinking no wine, and you say he has a demon. The Son of Man has come eating and drinking,

  26. and you say, look at him, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners, yet wisdom

  27. is justified by all her children. Let's pray. Father, we pray that you would send us your spirit

  28. as we look into your word now, open our hearts and minds to receive from you. In Christ's name, amen.

  29. The atheist Richard Dawkins wrote,

  30. In other words, religious faith is only sustained when people refuse to question, doubt, and think

  31. rationally. Now, some Christians have behaved as if Richard Dawkins was right. I was recently talking

  32. with a friend of mine. He's one of the only Christian faculty members at a small liberal arts

  33. college where he teaches, and he was talking with one of his colleagues, a fellow professor who shared

  34. with him that he had grown up in a Bible-believing church, but no longer identified as a Christian.

  35. And they had a 40-minute conversation about the questions that led this man to distance himself

  36. from and eventually abandon his Christian faith that he was raised with. And at the end of the

  37. conversation, he said to my friend, you're the only Christian I've met who's been willing to seriously

  38. engage with me about these questions. Now, sadly, that's how many people have experienced Christianity.

  39. If you believe in God or the Bible, don't ask too many questions. Don't worry about evidence. Don't

  40. ask for too many explanations. That means your faith is weak. Some Christians seem to resist or suppress

  41. all expressions of doubt or disappointment or questioning. They see no place for doubt in the life of a

  42. Christian. Now, by contrast, there are other Christians who seem to be strangely attracted to doubt.

  43. Doubt and disappointment and disappointment and questioning. They act as if doubt and disappointment

  44. should have a permanent place in the life of every Christian. One such person wrote,

  45. doubt is a healthy part of faith. I am generally suspicious of Christians who claim to be certain

  46. about what they believe. I think religious certainty is one of the biggest problems in the world today,

  47. and I think it is driving people out of the church. But that position has its problems as well.

  48. For one thing, doubts don't just come out of pure neutrality. Behind every doubt or question

  49. is an alternate belief. Doubts emerge from other, often unstated assumptions. For example,

  50. this particular person who I quoted assumes that certainty or confidence in one's faith in God

  51. fosters arrogance. Always or almost all the time.

  52. What does Christianity actually say about doubt and questions and disappointment with God?

  53. This morning's passage speaks to this very issue. In fact, it begins with a question

  54. from John the Baptist to Jesus.

  55. Are you the one who is to come? Or shall we look for another?

  56. This morning I want to look at John's question,

  57. at Jesus' answer,

  58. and finally at our response.

  59. So first, John's question.

  60. Now if you have read through the Gospel of Luke,

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  61. chapters 1 through 3, Luke has already introduced us to John the Baptist.

  62. And we see in those chapters that the lives and callings of John the Baptist and Jesus

  63. were deeply intertwined from the very beginning.

  64. Their mothers were even related to each other.

  65. Luke describes their birth and circumcision and naming and growth and beginning of their public ministry.

  66. Jesus goes to John to be baptized by him.

  67. John says,

  68. I'm not the Messiah,

  69. but he points to Jesus as the coming one.

  70. But by this point,

  71. John was no longer preaching in the wilderness.

  72. He was locked up in prison.

  73. We learn that in chapter 3, verse 20.

  74. John had confronted King Herod,

  75. the most powerful ruler in the region.

  76. Because Herod,

  77. Herod had divorced his wife

  78. and married his brother's wife instead.

  79. And John confronted him

  80. about that and many other evil things that he had done.

  81. And Herod decided he couldn't,

  82. the only way to shut him up was to lock him up.

  83. So he put him in jail.

  84. And from jail,

  85. John sent messengers to Jesus to ask this question.

  86. Are you the one who is to come?

  87. Or shall we look for another?

  88. It seems like,

  89. for whatever reason,

  90. John was having second thoughts.

  91. He was doubting.

  92. He was questioning.

  93. Now some commentators have said that can't be right.

  94. How can John the Baptist,

  95. the bold preacher,

  96. be doubting Jesus?

  97. No, he must have been asking this question

  98. simply for the sake of his disciples.

  99. That they could be reassured

  100. of who Jesus really was.

  101. But I think the most natural way

  102. to read John's question

  103. is as a genuine question.

  104. John's disciples had reported to him

  105. the things that they had seen Jesus do so far.

  106. What we've looked at over the last three chapters,

  107. the blind receiving their sight,

  108. the lame walk,

  109. the lepers are cleansed,

  110. the deaf hear.

  111. And perhaps John was thinking,

  112. okay,

  113. that sounds all well and good.

  114. But I thought that

  115. one mightier than I was coming

  116. to clear the threshing floor

  117. and gather the wheat into God's barn

  118. and burn up the chaff

  119. with unquenchable fire.

  120. What about God bringing his judgment,

  121. righteous judgment

  122. on an ungodly government

  123. and a corrupt religious establishment?

  124. What about the Messiah delivering me

  125. from the clutches of wicked King Herod?

  126. I don't hear about any of that happening yet.

  127. Jesus,

  128. are you really

  129. the coming Messiah?

  130. Or is there somebody else coming after you?

  131. Should we be on the lookout

  132. for someone else?

  133. You know,

  134. sometimes

  135. loyal and self-sacrificial servants of God

  136. experience doubt

  137. and disappointment

  138. and depression.

  139. The prophet Elijah did.

  140. Right after his dramatic showdown

  141. with the prophets of Baal,

  142. a victory,

  143. he ran away

  144. and went into a cave

  145. and wanted to die.

  146. Dietrich Bonhoeffer,

  147. the courageous German pastor

  148. who resisted the Nazis

  149. and protected the Jews

  150. and trained underground church leaders

  151. and even joined in a plot

  152. to assassinate Hitler,

  153. wrote a poem

  154. when he was in the concentration camp

  155. entitled,

  156. Who Am I?

  157. This is what he wrote.

  158. Who am I?

  159. They often tell me

  160. I would step from my cell's confinement

  161. calmly,

  162. cheerfully,

  163. firmly,

  164. like a squire

  165. from his country house.

  166. Who am I?

  167. They often tell me

  168. I would talk to my guards

  169. freely

  170. and friendly

  171. and clearly

  172. as though it were mine to command.

  173. Who am I?

  174. They also tell me

  175. I would bear the days

  176. of misfortune

  177. steadily,

  178. smilingly,

  179. proudly,

  180. like one accustomed to win.

  181. Am I really all that

  182. which other men tell of?

  183. Or am I only

  184. what I know of myself?

  185. Restless

  186. and longing

  187. and sick

  188. like a bird in a cage,

  189. struggling for breath

  190. as though hands

  191. were compressing my throat,

  192. thirsting for words

  193. of kindness,

  194. for neighborliness,

  195. trembling

  196. in expectation

  197. of great events,

  198. powerlessly trembling

  199. for friends

  200. at an infinite distance,

  201. weary

  202. and empty

  203. at praying,

  204. at thinking,

  205. faint

  206. and ready

  207. to say farewell

  208. to it all.

  209. Have you ever been there?

  210. Everybody around you

  211. looks at you

  212. and says

  213. you're so strong

  214. in God's word,

  215. you're so devoted

  216. to the Lord,

  217. you're such a servant

  218. of God's people

  219. and on the inside

  220. you feel like

  221. you're about to break down.

  222. You feel weary

  223. and worn out

  224. and short-tempered

  225. and cynical.

  226. Some days

  227. you look around

  228. and don't even quite know

  229. what to believe anymore.

  230. Doubt and disappointment

  231. can be provoked

  232. by all kinds of things,

  233. whether it's

  234. simple physical tiredness

  235. or grieving a loss,

  236. boredom and idleness,

  237. spiritual attack,

  238. harboring unconfessed sin,

  239. all kinds of reasons.

  240. Sometimes it's

  241. when we feel strongest

  242. that we're most

  243. spiritually vulnerable.

  244. After all,

  245. the Bible warns us

  246. pride goes before a fall.

  247. And sometimes

  248. it's when we feel weakest

  249. that our faith

  250. is being refined,

  251. sometimes unbeknownst to us.

  252. What do we do

  253. when we're in the midst

  254. of doubt,

  255. disappointment,

  256. or depression?

  257. Well, sometimes I think

  258. we hold on to those things.

  259. We sort of turn them

  260. over and over

  261. in our own minds.

  262. We simmer

  263. and marinate in them.

  264. We can even become proud

  265. of them.

  266. We see these things

  267. as a badge of authenticity

  268. that distinguishes us

  269. from more simple-minded believers.

  270. If we're honest with ourselves,

  271. we'd be afraid

  272. to let those things go.

  273. Sometimes we hide

  274. our doubts instead.

  275. We feel that doubt

  276. is inherently shameful,

  277. so we avoid

  278. revealing our doubts

  279. and our disappointments

  280. to fellow Christians.

  281. We especially resist

  282. voicing any doubts

  283. to a Christian leader.

  284. Perhaps we share

  285. our doubts

  286. and disappointments

  287. with unbelievers

  288. or unorthodox believers,

  289. thinking that they

  290. will be more sympathetic.

  291. But those are not

  292. healthy responses

  293. to doubt

  294. and disappointment.

  295. Look at what John does here.

  296. He sends messengers

  297. to Jesus.

  298. Despite the prison walls,

  299. despite the geographical distance

  300. separating him and Jesus,

  301. he finds a way

  302. to communicate his questions

  303. and bring his doubts

  304. to Jesus.

  305. There's no one

  306. more sympathetic

  307. and no one

  308. more wise

  309. than Jesus.

  310. So bring your doubt

  311. and your disappointment

  312. and your depression

  313. to Jesus

  314. through prayer

  315. and through fellowship

  316. with his people.

  317. There's John's question.

  318. Are you the one?

  319. Or shall we wait?

  320. Now let's look at Jesus' answer

  321. in verse 21 to 28.

  322. Notice how Jesus

  323. responds to John.

  324. He does not rebuke

  325. or shame him.

  326. He does not say

  327. stop asking such questions.

  328. You should know the answer,

  329. of course.

  330. Look instead

  331. at how he responds.

  332. Verse 21.

  333. He does a bunch of miracles

  334. right in front of their eyes.

  335. He shows John's messengers

  336. some of the visible

  337. fruits of his ministry.

  338. You learn who Jesus is

  339. by seeing what he does.

  340. And there are many people

  341. even right here

  342. in this room

  343. who can testify

  344. to the transforming

  345. and healing power

  346. of Jesus Christ.

  347. Where Christ is

  348. we will see his

  349. actual and visible work

  350. in people's hearts

  351. and lives.

  352. Not always in the form

  353. of miraculous healings

  354. but real fruits

  355. of the spirit.

  356. Real change over time.

  357. Sometimes it's two steps forward

  358. and one and a half steps back.

  359. But it's real change

  360. that wouldn't be happening

  361. in your life

  362. or in other people's lives

  363. apart from Christ

  364. and the Holy Spirit.

  365. And sometimes

  366. when we're doubting

  367. or disappointment

  368. we can be encouraged

  369. by looking around

  370. at our brothers and sisters

  371. and seeing God

  372. at work

  373. in their lives.

  374. Verse 22.

  375. Jesus lists

  376. the work of mercy

  377. he has done.

  378. Sort of summarizing

  379. these last three chapters.

  380. but these words

  381. are also a fulfillment

  382. of Isaiah's prophecies.

  383. And John

  384. well versed in the Old Testament

  385. would have recognized that.

  386. Because Isaiah prophesied

  387. that in the day of the Messiah

  388. exactly these things

  389. would happen.

  390. For example

  391. Isaiah 35

  392. 5 and 6

  393. says

  394. Then

  395. the eyes of the blind

  396. shall be opened

  397. and the ears

  398. of the deaf

  399. unstopped.

  400. Then shall the lame man

  401. leap like a deer.

  402. Isaiah 26

  403. says

  404. Your dead shall live

  405. their bodies shall rise.

  406. Isaiah 61

  407. 1

  408. The spirit of the Lord

  409. is upon me

  410. he has anointed me

  411. to bring good news

  412. to the poor.

  413. What Jesus is saying

  414. is I'm the promised Messiah

  415. the one of whom

  416. the scriptures

  417. have foretold.

  418. Jesus reminds John

  419. that the Bible

  420. has a storyline

  421. and Jesus is the climax

  422. it leads up to him

  423. and sometimes

  424. that's helpful

  425. when we're facing

  426. doubts as well.

  427. To see God's purposes

  428. God's faithfulness

  429. in the past

  430. to see that

  431. God led his people

  432. in the Old Testament

  433. through a wilderness too.

  434. And God's people

  435. waited

  436. hundreds of years

  437. and many of them

  438. died without seeing

  439. what was promised

  440. but God was faithful

  441. to his promises.

  442. It's helpful for us

  443. to look back

  444. and see

  445. God's faithfulness

  446. in the scriptures.

  447. Verse 23

  448. Jesus gives a challenge

  449. blessed is the one

  450. who is not offended

  451. by me.

  452. Another translation

  453. in the NIV says

  454. blessed is the one

  455. who does not stumble

  456. on account of me.

  457. You might say

  458. blessed is the one

  459. who is not turned off

  460. by me.

  461. What's Jesus saying here?

  462. Well it seems that John

  463. most likely

  464. had expectations

  465. about Jesus

  466. that needed

  467. to be revised.

  468. He was expecting

  469. Jesus

  470. to bring salvation

  471. and judgment

  472. all at once.

  473. Jesus was operating

  474. on a different timeline.

  475. Yes there would be

  476. a future day of judgment

  477. but now Jesus was here

  478. to bring God's mercy

  479. his saving grace

  480. to a broken world.

  481. Sometimes our doubts

  482. and disappointments

  483. are rooted in

  484. sincere

  485. but misguided

  486. expectations

  487. about what God

  488. is going to do

  489. and when he's going

  490. to do it

  491. and what part

  492. I'm supposed to play

  493. in it.

  494. And sometimes

  495. our doubts

  496. and disappointments

  497. are God's means

  498. instruments

  499. that he uses

  500. to reshape

  501. and refine

  502. and refocus

  503. our expectations.

  504. Sometimes we can be

  505. offended

  506. by the mercy

  507. Jesus shows.

  508. Isn't that what

  509. Jesus has been doing?

  510. Showing mercy

  511. to all kinds

  512. of people.

  513. Teaching his disciples

  514. love your enemies

  515. do good to those

  516. who hate you

  517. bless those

  518. who curse you

  519. pray for those

  520. who abuse you

  521. be merciful

  522. even as your father

  523. is merciful.

  524. God the father

  525. is merciful

  526. every day

  527. to people

  528. who hate him

  529. and curse him

  530. and abuse his blessings

  531. and he calls us

  532. to be merciful

  533. like him.

  534. That's a hard teaching.

  535. Right?

  536. Many of us

  537. would be offended

  538. by that

  539. if we take it

  540. seriously.

  541. Now it doesn't mean

  542. we shouldn't set

  543. appropriate boundaries

  544. when relationships

  545. turn toxic

  546. but it does mean

  547. we should pray

  548. for people

  549. even those

  550. that hurt us

  551. and pray

  552. for an open heart

  553. toward reconciliation.

  554. Perhaps we're offended

  555. when others seem

  556. to receive more mercy

  557. than we do.

  558. Imagine John

  559. sitting in prison

  560. and he gets

  561. this report.

  562. Jesus heals

  563. the lame.

  564. He gives sight

  565. to the blind.

  566. He cleanses lepers.

  567. He raises the dead

  568. and I'm still here

  569. in prison.

  570. Okay Jesus

  571. I can see you're there

  572. for somebody else

  573. but what about me?

  574. Jesus said

  575. blessed is the one

  576. who's not offended

  577. by me.

  578. In another place

  579. he says

  580. don't be envious

  581. because I'm generous.

  582. You see

  583. the salvation

  584. that Jesus brings

  585. is by his grace alone.

  586. It's not something

  587. we earn

  588. or deserve

  589. by our works.

  590. We can't deserve it.

  591. We can't earn it.

  592. We can only receive it.

  593. And some people

  594. are offended by that

  595. because it means

  596. it humbles us.

  597. The only way

  598. we can receive it

  599. is to humble ourselves

  600. and lay down our pride

  601. and acknowledge

  602. we don't deserve it

  603. and we can't earn it.

  604. And we have to

  605. open our hands

  606. and receive it

  607. as a free gift.

  608. But when we accept

  609. that salvation

  610. by grace

  611. Jesus says

  612. we're blessed.

  613. We're at peace

  614. with God.

  615. We can have joy

  616. from the Lord.

  617. Jesus is a merciful

  618. Messiah.

  619. That's the first part

  620. of his response

  621. to John

  622. is emphasizing

  623. his mission

  624. of mercy.

  625. But then Jesus

  626. turns to the crowds

  627. in verses 24 to 28

  628. and he asks them

  629. a question about John.

  630. What did you go out

  631. into the wilderness

  632. to see?

  633. He repeats this question

  634. three times.

  635. Right?

  636. Not a reed shaken

  637. by the wind.

  638. Not a weak

  639. and wavering

  640. individual

  641. driven by the trends

  642. of popular opinion.

  643. Not a man

  644. dressed in soft clothing.

  645. Overprivileged,

  646. overprotected,

  647. and overindulged.

  648. But a prophet.

  649. In fact,

  650. the messenger

  651. prophesied by Malachi

  652. who would prepare

  653. the way

  654. for the coming

  655. of the Lord himself.

  656. Jesus is a merciful

  657. Messiah,

  658. but John

  659. was a messenger

  660. of repentance.

  661. John was a prophet

  662. in the line

  663. of Elijah.

  664. He spoke the truth

  665. without apologizing

  666. for it,

  667. without mincing words,

  668. without beating

  669. around the bush.

  670. He called people

  671. to repent,

  672. to confess their sins,

  673. and be baptized

  674. in the Jordan River.

  675. That was a dramatic

  676. public symbol.

  677. It means I need

  678. to start all over again.

  679. I'm going to leave

  680. behind my old way

  681. of life

  682. and start something new.

  683. And John didn't just

  684. talk about forsaking

  685. sin in general.

  686. He called people

  687. to repent

  688. of particular sins.

  689. So John told

  690. the tax collectors

  691. who were notorious

  692. for fudging the numbers

  693. to their own benefit,

  694. don't collect any more

  695. than you're authorized

  696. to.

  697. He told the soldiers,

  698. notorious for abusing

  699. their power,

  700. don't extort money

  701. from anyone.

  702. By threats

  703. or false accusation,

  704. be content with your wages.

  705. He told Herod,

  706. who did whatever

  707. he wanted to do

  708. and expected others

  709. to get in line,

  710. repent,

  711. you're committing adultery.

  712. John was willing

  713. to get in people's face

  714. and confront them

  715. about their sin.

  716. He called people

  717. to repentance

  718. and warned

  719. of God's coming judgment.

  720. He said,

  721. even now the axe

  722. is laid to the root

  723. of the trees.

  724. Every tree,

  725. therefore,

  726. that does not produce

  727. good fruit

  728. will be cut down

  729. and thrown

  730. into the fire.

  731. Now,

  732. in some ways,

  733. Jesus and John

  734. might seem like opposites.

  735. John preaching

  736. about sin

  737. and repentance

  738. and warning

  739. of God's coming judgment.

  740. Jesus proclaiming

  741. good news to the poor

  742. and healing

  743. all kinds of people.

  744. John,

  745. the solemn ascetic

  746. living in the wilderness,

  747. subsisting on locusts

  748. and wild honey,

  749. eating no bread,

  750. drinking no alcohol,

  751. teaching his disciples

  752. to fast.

  753. Jesus,

  754. the joyful king

  755. who spent most of his time

  756. in the cities,

  757. eating and drinking

  758. with tax collectors

  759. and sinners,

  760. speaking of himself

  761. as the bridegroom,

  762. his disciples

  763. as wedding guests

  764. and his ministry

  765. as new wine

  766. in new wineskins.

  767. You might think,

  768. that looks about

  769. as different as can be.

  770. But Jesus spoke

  771. very highly of John.

  772. Jesus did not criticize

  773. anything about

  774. John's ministry.

  775. Among those born of women,

  776. none is greater than John,

  777. he said.

  778. Jesus absolutely affirmed

  779. John's ministry

  780. as a messenger of repentance.

  781. And yet,

  782. he said,

  783. the one who is least

  784. in the kingdom of God

  785. is greater than he.

  786. Verse 28.

  787. You might say,

  788. what does that verse mean?

  789. Well, it means that John

  790. was a transitional figure.

  791. The messenger

  792. going before the Messiah.

  793. Sort of like the torchbearer

  794. of the Olympic Games.

  795. Leading the way,

  796. heralding the greatness

  797. and uniqueness

  798. of what is to come.

  799. But of course,

  800. once the Olympic Games begin,

  801. the torchbearer

  802. fades into the background.

  803. Or it's like the first emissary

  804. of the Allied Liberation Forces

  805. announcing to the inhabitants

  806. of a Nazi concentration camp,

  807. you are no longer

  808. under Hitler's dominion.

  809. A new kingdom has arrived.

  810. A new regime is in place.

  811. John was preparing the way

  812. for the Lord,

  813. announcing the coming

  814. of the king.

  815. His role was unique.

  816. His role was important.

  817. But Jesus had come

  818. to establish God's kingdom

  819. with authority.

  820. And once the king

  821. had arrived,

  822. in particular,

  823. once his kingdom

  824. would be established

  825. through his own death

  826. and resurrection,

  827. John's role would fade

  828. into the background

  829. like a candle

  830. fading into irrelevance

  831. before the rising sun.

  832. So Jesus answered

  833. to John's question.

  834. Jesus is the merciful Messiah.

  835. John's the messenger

  836. of repentance.

  837. Now how do we respond

  838. to both of them?

  839. In verse 29 to 35,

  840. we see two responses

  841. to John and to Jesus.

  842. And interestingly,

  843. we don't see

  844. half the people

  845. taking John's side

  846. and half the people

  847. taking Jesus' side.

  848. What we see is

  849. half the people

  850. take neither side

  851. and half the people

  852. take both of them.

  853. Verse 29 and verse 35,

  854. we see a positive response.

  855. When the people

  856. heard this

  857. and the tax collectors too,

  858. they declared God just

  859. or they justified God

  860. having been baptized

  861. with the baptism of John.

  862. They had responded

  863. to John's call

  864. to repentance.

  865. They had taken

  866. his warning of judgment

  867. to heart.

  868. They had heeded his words

  869. and so they also

  870. welcomed Jesus' ministry.

  871. Verse 29,

  872. I think,

  873. helps us understand

  874. verse 35.

  875. Wisdom is justified

  876. by all her children.

  877. It's the same verb,

  878. justified.

  879. Now throughout the Bible,

  880. wisdom is always connected

  881. with the character of God.

  882. And the children of wisdom

  883. are people who live

  884. according to God's wisdom

  885. or according to God's ways

  886. and his character.

  887. In this case,

  888. those who receive

  889. John's baptism

  890. and receive Jesus' ministry

  891. are the children of wisdom.

  892. And so just as

  893. in verse 29,

  894. it says the tax collectors

  895. and the people

  896. declared God just.

  897. That's the same thing

  898. verse 35 is saying.

  899. Wisdom is justified.

  900. Wisdom's ways

  901. are proved right

  902. or declared right

  903. by all her children.

  904. All right?

  905. Those who receive

  906. the ministry of John

  907. and Jesus

  908. declare

  909. God is righteous

  910. in calling us

  911. to repentance

  912. and God is faithful

  913. to his promise

  914. in bringing

  915. his mercy

  916. through the Messiah.

  917. So we see

  918. those people

  919. receive both.

  920. Verse 30,

  921. by contrast,

  922. we see the Pharisees

  923. and the lawyers

  924. rejected both.

  925. And in verse

  926. 31 through 34,

  927. Jesus exposes

  928. their hypocrisy

  929. in doing so.

  930. He says,

  931. you are like

  932. fickle children.

  933. What you want

  934. is always changing.

  935. You're never satisfied.

  936. Right?

  937. When Jesus arrived

  938. playing the flute

  939. as it will,

  940. summoning people

  941. into the joy

  942. of God's kingdom,

  943. they didn't dance.

  944. They didn't rejoice.

  945. They didn't join in.

  946. Instead,

  947. they rejected Jesus

  948. and labeled him

  949. a glutton

  950. and a drunkard.

  951. When John came

  952. singing a dirge,

  953. speaking about

  954. God's wrath

  955. and judgment

  956. and calling people

  957. to repentance,

  958. they didn't

  959. mourn over their sin.

  960. They didn't repent.

  961. Instead,

  962. they labeled him

  963. a fanatic,

  964. demon-possessed.

  965. Jesus says,

  966. you're never satisfied.

  967. No matter what

  968. they look like,

  969. you're always

  970. finding fault

  971. with the servants

  972. of God.

  973. You see,

  974. there's a kind

  975. of doubt

  976. and questioning

  977. that is honest

  978. and sincere.

  979. There's a kind

  980. of disappointment

  981. and depression

  982. that God's servants

  983. may,

  984. and usually

  985. sometime in their lives

  986. do,

  987. experience.

  988. That's what John the Baptist

  989. was experiencing

  990. at the beginning.

  991. He had some

  992. misguided expectations.

  993. He was in a very

  994. difficult and stressful

  995. personal situation

  996. and so he had

  997. some doubts

  998. and disappointment.

  999. Jesus says,

  1000. no worries.

  1001. Jesus doesn't

  1002. rebuke or condemn

  1003. or shame him.

  1004. He responds

  1005. to his question

  1006. with mercy

  1007. and with encouragement

  1008. and even publicly

  1009. commending him

  1010. for his faithfulness.

  1011. But there's also

  1012. a kind of doubt

  1013. and questioning

  1014. that is not

  1015. fully honest

  1016. or sincere,

  1017. which we see

  1018. in the Pharisees

  1019. and the lawyers.

  1020. They were unmoved

  1021. either to joy

  1022. or to tears.

  1023. They were indifferent,

  1024. complacent,

  1025. apathetic,

  1026. dismissive,

  1027. impossible to please.

  1028. They were always

  1029. finding fault

  1030. with God's servants.

  1031. One's too strict,

  1032. the other's too generous.

  1033. because really,

  1034. they didn't want

  1035. either John

  1036. or Jesus

  1037. to interfere

  1038. too much

  1039. with their lives.

  1040. They thought

  1041. they were pretty good

  1042. as they were.

  1043. And so they would

  1044. always find a reason

  1045. to doubt

  1046. and reject

  1047. God's messengers.

  1048. And Jesus says

  1049. that kind of doubt

  1050. and questioning

  1051. is just sinful

  1052. and it leads

  1053. only to spiritual death

  1054. and destruction.

  1055. So three applications

  1056. as we close.

  1057. Number one,

  1058. God's servants

  1059. may have different gifts

  1060. or emphases

  1061. in their ministries.

  1062. The Apostle Paul

  1063. speaks about spiritual gifts.

  1064. In Romans 12,

  1065. he refers to some

  1066. who have the gift

  1067. of mercy

  1068. and others

  1069. who have the gift

  1070. of prophecy

  1071. or exhorting.

  1072. Some of you

1073. might be more like John.

  1074. You can point out

  1075. what is wrong

  1076. in the world

  1077. and what needs

  1078. to change

  1079. in the church.

  1080. You can speak

  1081. the truth

  1082. with boldness

  1083. and you don't really

  1084. care what people think.

  1085. That's a gift.

  1086. It can also be

  1087. a liability

  1088. if you don't learn

  1089. to use that gift

  1090. with appropriate

  1091. gentleness

  1092. and love

  1093. in an edifying way.

  1094. Some of you

  1095. might have

  1096. the gift of mercy.

  1097. You can come

  1098. alongside people

  1099. who are troubled.

  1100. You can come

  1101. alongside someone

  1102. who's weak

  1103. and practically

  1104. help them.

  1105. You can listen

  1106. to someone

  1107. who has an anxious

  1108. heart.

  1109. You can be patient

  1110. and forbearing

  1111. with difficult

  1112. personalities.

  1113. That's a gift.

  1114. It can also be

  1115. a liability

  1116. if you never

  1117. speak the truth

  1118. and always

  1119. refuse to confront

  1120. even when that's

  1121. called for.

  1122. But here's the thing.

  1123. God's gifted

  1124. us all differently

  1125. but through Christ

  1126. we're all

  1127. on the same team.

  1128. And so we need

  1129. to bear with

  1130. one another

  1131. and learn to work

  1132. together even if

  1133. we rub each other

  1134. the wrong way

  1135. sometimes.

  1136. We need to try

  1137. to use our gifts

  1138. for the edification

  1139. of the body

  1140. in a balanced way

  1141. but we also need

  1142. to bear with

  1143. one another

  1144. and receive

  1145. one another's gifts

  1146. and realize that

  1147. God has given

  1148. each of us

  1149. different gifts.

  1150. second application

  1151. John the preacher

  1152. of repentance

  1153. and Jesus the merciful

  1154. Messiah are on

  1155. the same team.

  1156. You can't have

  1157. one without

  1158. the other.

  1159. You can't fathom

  1160. the magnitude

  1161. of God's grace

  1162. in Jesus

  1163. until you have

  1164. taken to heart

  1165. God's law

  1166. and its demands.

  1167. You can't fully

  1168. enter into the joy

  1169. of Jesus' kingdom

  1170. without being serious

  1171. about turning to God

  1172. for the grace

  1173. to help you

  1174. change.

  1175. That's what the season

  1176. of Lent

  1177. is about.

  1178. The season of

  1179. leading up to Easter

1180. that we're in right now.

  1181. Traditionally

  1182. it's a time

  1183. of preparation

  1184. of fasting

  1185. and prayer

  1186. confessing our sin

  1187. seeking reconciliation

  1188. with God

  1189. with one another

  1190. preparing to share

  1191. in the feast

  1192. of Christ's resurrection

  1193. with fullness

  1194. of joy.

  1195. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  1196. wrote this

  1197. grace is costly

  1198. because it calls

  1199. us to follow

  1200. and it is grace

  1201. because it calls

  1202. us to follow

  1203. Jesus Christ.

  1204. It is costly

  1205. because it costs

  1206. a person his life

  1207. and it is grace

  1208. because it gives

  1209. a person

  1210. the only true life.

  1211. It is costly

  1212. because it condemns

  1213. sin

  1214. and grace

  1215. because it justifies

  1216. the sinner.

  1217. Above all

  1218. it is costly

  1219. because it costs

  1220. God

1221. the life of his son.

  1222. You were bought

  1223. at a price.

  1224. What has cost

  1225. God

  1226. much

  1227. cannot be cheap

  1228. for us.

  1229. Above all

  1230. it is grace

  1231. because God

  1232. did not reckon

  1233. his son

  1234. too dear

  1235. a price

  1236. to pay

  1237. for our life

  1238. but delivered

  1239. him up for us.

  1240. costly grace

  1241. is the incarnation

  1242. of God.

  1243. God

  1244. becoming flesh

  1245. in Jesus Christ

  1246. taking on our sin

  1247. bearing it

  1248. on the cross

  1249. being

  1250. just

  1251. in bearing

  1252. the punishment

  1253. of our sin

  1254. and being merciful

  1255. in offering us

  1256. a new life

  1257. in Christ.

  1258. So our final

  1259. application is to

  1260. take communion

  1261. together

  1262. with repentance

  1263. and with joy.

  1264. when we come

  1265. to the Lord's table

  1266. there's a call

  1267. to repent

  1268. to confess

  1269. our sins.

  1270. The apostle Paul

  1271. gives a strong

  1272. warning

  1273. whoever eats

  1274. the bread

  1275. or drinks

  1276. the cup

  1277. of the Lord

  1278. in an unworthy

  1279. manner

  1280. will be guilty

  1281. concerning the body

  1282. and blood

  1283. of the Lord.

  1284. Let a person

  1285. examine himself

  1286. then

  1287. and so eat

  1288. of the bread

  1289. and drink

  1290. of the cup.

  1291. What that means

  1292. is this

  1293. if you are

  1294. living

  1295. in unrepentant

  1296. sin

  1297. that is

  1298. if you know

  1299. you are living

  1300. in a pattern

  1301. of disobedience

  1302. to God

  1303. and you have

  1304. no intention

  1305. or desire

  1306. to change

  1307. then don't

  1308. take the bread

  1309. and the cup

  1310. because you

  1311. can't feast

  1312. on Christ

  1313. if you are

  1314. refusing

  1315. to turn

  1316. to him.

  1317. Let a person

  1318. examine himself

  1319. Paul says

  1320. as the bread

  1321. is being

  1322. passed out

  1323. pray with the

  1324. psalmist

  1325. search me

  1326. oh God

  1327. know my

  1328. heart

  1329. test me

  1330. and know

  1331. my anxious

  1332. thoughts

  1333. see if there

  1334. be

  1335. an evil

  1336. way in me

  1337. and lead

  1338. me in the

  1339. way everlasting.

  1340. But taking

  1341. communion

  1342. is not only

  1343. an opportunity

  1344. for repentance

  1345. and self

  1346. examination

  1347. it's also

  1348. an invitation

  1349. to partake

  1350. with Christ

  1351. in his

  1352. joy.

  1353. Because through

  1354. what the

  1355. communion

  1356. table

  1357. reminds us

  1358. is that

  1359. through

  1360. Jesus'

  1361. death

  1362. on the

  1363. cross

  1364. our sin

  1365. has been

  1366. paid for.

  1367. The price

  1368. has been

  1369. paid.

  1370. We don't

  1371. take the

  1372. bread and

  1373. the cup

  1374. because we're

  1375. good enough

  1376. or because

  1377. we've done

  1378. enough.

  1379. We take

  1380. the bread

  1381. and the cup

  1382. knowing that

  1383. he is

  1384. good enough

  1385. and what

  1386. he did

  1387. on the

  1388. cross

  1389. for us

  1390. is enough.

  1391. And in

  1392. response we

  1393. say take

  1394. me Lord

  1395. I'm yours.

  1396. You are

  1397. mine

  1398. and I

  1399. love you.

  1400. And we

  1401. can know

  1402. the joy

  1403. of forgiveness

  1404. as we

  1405. take the

  1406. bread remembering

  1407. his body

  1408. and take

  1409. the cup

  1410. remembering

  1411. his blood.

  1412. Jesus

  1413. described his

  1414. kingdom as a

  1415. great banquet

  1416. where the

  1417. poor and

  1418. the doubting

  1419. and the

  1420. disappointed

  1421. and the

  1422. depressed

  1423. can come

  1424. and find

  1425. rest and

  1426. peace and

  1427. joy and

  1428. feed on

  1429. the bread

  1430. of life

  1431. for this

  1432. life and

  1433. the life

  1434. to come.

  1435. Finally

  1436. if you're

  1437. not a

  1438. Christian

  1439. consider the

  1440. invitation of

  1441. Christ to

  1442. you.

  1443. Instead of

  1444. taking the

  1445. bread in

  1446. the cup

  1447. today

  1448. consider

  1449. taking

  1450. Christ.

  1451. If you

  1452. have many

  1453. doubts and

  1454. questions

  1455. feel free to

  1456. ask them.

  1457. There's no

  1458. shame in

  1459. doing that.

  1460. prayer.

  1461. But also

  1462. consider what

  1463. is holding

  1464. you back

  1465. from

  1466. surrendering

  1467. to

  1468. Christ

  1469. and

  1470. trusting

  1471. him.

  1472. There's

  1473. some

  1474. prayers in

  1475. the center

  1476. of the

  1477. bulletin

  1478. that you

  1479. can look

  1480. at and

  1481. read through

  1482. as the

  1483. bread and

  1484. cup are

  1485. being passed

  1486. out.

  1487. One's a

  1488. prayer for

  1489. those searching

  1490. for truth.

  1491. Another is a

  1492. prayer of

  1493. belief.

  1494. Perhaps one

  1495. of those

  1496. prayers you

  1497. would want to

  1498. read them

  1499. and perhaps

  1500. even use

  1501. those words

  1502. to pray.

  1503. As we

  1504. prepare to

  1505. share communion

  1506. together let's

  1507. pray.

  1508. Lord we

  1509. come to you

  1510. today

  1511. even with

  1512. our doubts

  1513. our questions

  1514. our disappointments

  1515. we pray that

  1516. you would feed

  1517. us with the

  1518. bread of life.

  1519. We thank you

  1520. Lord for your

  1521. mercy.

  1522. We thank you

  1523. Lord for your

  1524. righteousness.

  1525. righteousness.

  1526. We thank you

  1527. for the cross

  1528. of Jesus

  1529. Christ.

  1530. And that is

  1531. our hope.

  1532. In his name

  1533. we pray.

  1534. Amen.
