  1. Proverbs chapter 6, this morning, we are looking, we're doing our series this summer in the

    Proverbs 6 chapter mention

  2. book of Proverbs about wisdom, and today we get some very practical instructions and guidance

  3. for our lives.

  4. So, let's read.

  5. We are reading chapter 6, verses 1 to 19.

  6. Page 530 in the Pew Bible, if you're looking at one of those, let's read together.

  7. My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger,

  8. if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, then do

  9. this, my son, and save yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor.

  10. Go.

  11. Go.

  12. Hasten.

  13. Plead urgently with your neighbor.

  14. Give your eyes no sleep and your eyelids no slumber.

  15. Save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the

  16. fowler.

  17. Go to the ant, O sluggard.

  18. Consider her ways and be wise.

  19. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers

  20. her food in harvest.

  21. How long will you lie there, O sluggard?

  22. When will you arise from your sleep?

  23. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will

  24. come upon you like a robber and want like an armed man.

  25. A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech, winks with his eyes, signals

  26. with his feet, points with his finger, with perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing

  27. discord.

  28. Therefore, calamity will come upon him suddenly.

  29. In a moment, he will be broken beyond healing.

  30. There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him.

  31. Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans,

  32. feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

  33. Let's pray.

  34. Lord, we thank you for your word.

  35. We pray that you would speak to us through it this morning.

  36. Open our ears, our hearts, our minds.

  37. We pray that you would shape us with your fatherly instruction to us as your children this morning.

  38. In Jesus' name we pray.

  39. Amen.

  40. Well, so far in the book of Proverbs, we've heard some several general exhortations to pursue wisdom.

  41. Chapter 1, we've seen a warning against following the crowd into foolishness.

  42. Chapter 2, an invitation to seek after wisdom as a good gift from God that will come into our heart and deliver us from evil.

  43. Chapter 3 pointed us to some benefits of wisdom, that it tends to lead to success and long life.

  44. And chapter 4, we had an exhortation to pursue wisdom as a treasured tradition handed down from the past,

  45. as an ever-brightening path leading into the future, and as a worthy object of our heart's desire.

  46. But if you've been here these last few weeks or reading these chapters, you might be wondering,

  47. okay, so Proverbs is saying, wisdom is worth pursuing.

  48. Pursue wisdom.

  49. Pursue it with all your heart.

  50. It comes from God.

  51. Well, what is it exactly, you might be asking?

  52. What does it actually look like practically, concretely, to live a life pursuing wisdom?

  53. And this morning's text begins to answer that question.

  54. It speaks to three very practical areas of our lives.

  55. Our money, our time, and our relationships.

  56. Now, you might have noticed we skipped chapter 5.

  57. That's not because we're avoiding the passage that talks about sex and marriage and adultery.

  58. We're going to address it next week, along with chapter 7, which also addresses the same topic.

  59. Pastor Nick's going to preach on that.

  60. Then we'll go on to chapters 8 and 9, which look again at wisdom and folly more broadly.

  61. And after that, we're going to look into more specific topics in the rest of Proverbs.

  62. So, that's where we're going in the rest of our series in Proverbs this summer.

  63. But today, we're looking at money, time, and relationships.

  64. And in particular, this passage warns us against three foolish and dangerous paths.

  65. Being irresponsible with our money.

  66. Being sluggish with our time and opportunities.

  67. And being divisive in our relationships.

  68. And there's a progression in this passage.

  69. In these three sections, verses 1 to 5, verses 6 to 11, and verses 12 to 19, it goes from bad to worse.

  70. Starts with a well-intentioned form of foolishness.

  71. And then there's a passive form of foolishness with really no intention at all.

  72. And then there's a malicious form of foolishness.

  73. Actively trying to harm others.

  74. It goes from someone who might potentially fall into danger.

  75. The father speaking to his son and says, if you find yourself in this situation.

  76. To someone who is in actual danger.

  77. Speaking to the sluggard saying, you're already in danger.

  78. To someone who is actively endangering others.

  79. The malicious troublemaker.

  80. Fear.

  81. So, that's what we're looking at this morning.

  82. But God wants to use these negative examples, these warnings, to point us to the way of positive wisdom.

  83. And to point us to Jesus Christ, who is the source and the one through whom we can live wisely.

  84. In our money, in our time, and in our relationships.

  85. So, let's jump in.

  86. One section after another.

  87. That's a big picture.

  88. First danger.

  89. Verses 1 to 5.

  90. Well-intentioned but irresponsible financial commitments.

  91. Now, you might say, well, what does this mean in verse 1 where it talks about putting up security for your neighbor or giving your pledge for a stranger?

  92. Basically, that means to guarantee someone else's debts.

  93. So, in the ancient world, if you ask someone for a loan, they would often say, okay, I'm willing to loan you some money, but give me some collateral.

  94. Give me a pledge.

  95. Give me something that will serve as a promise that you'll pay me back.

  96. But what if you really want or need the loan, but you don't have any collateral?

  97. Well, you might go to a friend and say, can you put up collateral for me?

  98. Can you co-sign on the dotted line?

  99. Same thing can happen in the modern world.

  100. Perhaps you've been in a situation where you've wanted to apply for a mortgage on a house or a loan on a car and your income wasn't enough.

  101. And so, the bank told you you need a co-signer.

  102. Maybe someone has approached you and said, will you co-sign on my loan?

  103. You're not going to have to pay it.

  104. I fully intend to pay the loan myself, but I need you to co-sign.

  105. Otherwise, I can't get the loan or I get a terrible interest rate.

  106. And you might think, well, I know this person.

  107. They're well-intentioned.

  108. They wouldn't try to hurt me.

  109. I want to help them.

  110. But Proverbs warns us, don't do it.

  111. Now, when we're applying the wisdom in Proverbs, we need to remember two things.

  112. Number one, we live in a different culture and economic system.

  113. So, we need to think carefully about how the principles in Proverbs apply in our different cultural context.

  114. So, sometimes there's a straight line and sometimes we need to apply the principles in a different context.

  115. Second thing is Proverbs tends to give general principles, but implicitly acknowledges that the world is messy and sometimes there are exceptions.

  116. Having said that, in this case, the teaching of Proverbs is very consistent and strongly worded about putting up security for debts.

  117. Proverbs 11.15,

  118. Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer harm.

  119. Now, chapter 17, verse 18, one who lacks sense gives a pledge and puts up security in the presence of his neighbor.

  120. Chapter 22, 26, and 27, be not one of those who give pledges, who put up security for debts.

  121. If you have nothing with which to pay, why should your bed be taken from under you?

  122. Proverbs said the same thing, whether it's a stranger or a neighbor.

  123. Someone close by or far away, known or unknown.

  124. It says, don't put up security for someone else's debt.

  125. Now, you might say, wow, that sounds a little harsh.

  126. I mean, is Proverbs saying everyone for himself?

  127. Don't help out your neighbor, just keep everything for yourself?

  128. No.

  129. Proverbs doesn't say that.

  130. There are many places where Proverbs encourages generous giving to people who have real needs.

  131. Proverbs 14.21 says,

  132. Blessed is the one who is generous to the poor.

  133. Proverbs 19.17,

  134. Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.

  135. So, if you want to help someone, you can always give them whatever they need.

  136. Or you can loan them the money yourself.

  137. Now, in the Old Testament, God's people were allowed to loan money to each other,

  138. but they couldn't charge interest, and every seven years they had to cancel all debts,

  139. whether they were paid or unpaid.

  140. So, it prevented people from being enslaved perpetually and on the very long term in debt.

  141. And in the New Testament, we see an interesting example in the book of Philemon.

  142. The Apostle Paul is writing to someone, and he says,

  143. If Onesimus owes you anything…

  144. Onesimus had become a Christian, was Paul's friend.

  145. He says,

  146. If Onesimus owes you anything, charge it to my account.

  147. In other words, Paul's saying,

  148. I'm willing to pay off all his past debts.

  149. Now, Paul doesn't say,

  150. Whatever debts Onesimus may incur in the future for any reason, I will pay for them.

  151. Right?

  152. Paul doesn't make an open-ended financial commitment

  153. that he can't actually follow through on.

  154. But he's generous in his giving.

  155. The Bible encourages generous giving,

  156. but it warns us against giving what we don't have.

  157. Or putting up security for someone's debt.

  158. Right?

  159. So, don't put up collateral for a debt.

  160. Or co-sign someone else's loan,

  161. unless you are prepared to pay the whole thing yourself.

  162. That's the question you should ask yourself.

  163. If someone ever comes to you and says,

  164. Will you co-sign on my loan?

  165. The question is,

  166. Are you willing to pay the whole thing yourself?

  167. And give it…

  168. And effectively give it as a gift to that other person.

  169. Right?

  170. So, when you're co-signing,

  171. the thing doesn't actually belong to you.

  172. You're helping someone else get something.

  173. So, that's a question you need to ask.

  174. You can't give what you don't have,

  175. so don't promise what you can't deliver.

  176. So, that's the direct implication of this text.

  177. Right?

  178. It may be well-intentioned,

  179. but Proverbs is saying,

  180. It's not wise.

  181. Don't co-sign unless you are ready to pay the whole thing yourself,

  182. and unless you have the resources to do so.

  183. And if you're married,

  184. you've talked to your spouse and agreed

  185. that it would be a wise thing to devote your resources in that way.

  186. Some other practical implications of this text.

  187. Three other practical implications.

  188. Number one,

  189. more broadly,

  190. don't make financial commitments impulsively

  191. or under emotional pressure.

  192. The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9 says,

  193. Each one should give as he has decided in his heart to give,

  194. not reluctantly or under compulsion,

  195. for God loves a cheerful giver.

  196. That applies to our offerings in church.

  197. That also applies to giving more broadly.

  198. So, practical examples.

  199. If you're walking downtown,

  200. and someone comes up to you

  201. and asks you for $20

  202. because I need to take the train to New York

  203. because I'm stranded

  204. and I have no way to get back there,

  205. don't just give them $20

  206. because you're in a rush

  207. and because you don't want to feel guilty for saying no.

  208. You're probably not helping them by doing that.

  209. I mean, everybody knows.

  210. It's the oldest trick in the book.

  211. Right?

  212. Or if you answer a phone call

  213. from some unknown number,

  214. and they ask you to make a donation on the spot

  215. for starving children

  216. halfway around the world

  217. in some orphanage,

  218. don't do it.

  219. The reason why there are so many scams out there

  220. is some people actually get fooled by them.

  221. If nobody ever said yes to them,

  222. they would stop calling all of us.

  223. Psalm 41.1 says,

  224. Blessed is the one who considers the poor.

  225. That word means

  226. who takes time to think

  227. about how best to help people

  228. who really have a need.

  229. Godly wisdom is not being naive and gullible.

  230. It's not saying yes to every request

  231. that comes your way.

  232. It's being thoughtful and intentional

  233. in our generosity.

  234. Second, practical implication,

  235. think twice before you loan money

  236. to someone else.

  237. Now, I'm not saying never do it,

  238. but ask this question,

  239. is there a good reason

  240. why I'm willing to agree to a loan,

  241. but I'm not willing to give the money

  242. to them outright?

  243. Sometimes there is.

  244. But sometimes I think we can agree

  245. to loaning money to someone

  246. because we don't want to say no to them,

  247. we're afraid of their disapproval,

  248. but our heart's not really in it.

  249. We don't really want to just give them the money,

  250. and so a loan is sort of

  251. a half-hearted compromise.

  252. And then it gets more complicated

  253. if they can't pay you back the loan

  254. or disappear.

  255. So that's one reason why

  256. the deacons of this church

  257. are in charge of a benevolence fund

  258. to help people who have financial needs.

  259. And sometimes people come to me

  260. or one of the other pastors,

  261. one of the deacons,

  262. and say,

  263. I need some help to pay my bills

  264. or pay my rent this month,

  265. but I can pay the church back next month.

  266. And what we always say is,

  267. we will certainly consider your request.

  268. The deacons will be happy

  269. to consider your request.

  270. We want to think carefully

  271. about how best we can help you.

  272. But we won't give money on the basis

  273. that you promise to pay us back next month.

  274. Because what if something happens,

  275. you know,

  276. there's all kinds of things

  277. that can happen,

  278. and you can't pay the church back.

  279. You'll be tempted to lie

  280. or you'll be tempted to run away.

  281. And we don't want you to run away.

  282. You're a lot more valuable to us

  283. than whatever amount of money

  284. you are asking for.

  285. And so we are,

  286. we try to be careful

  287. as the deacons try to be careful

  288. and thoughtful

  289. and generous in our giving.

  290. But we've decided not to go the lone route

  291. for that reason.

  292. Third implication.

  293. What verse three to five says,

  294. if you have made well-intentioned

  295. but foolish financial commitments

  296. that are hanging over your head,

  297. if you've made promises to other people

  298. that you really can't keep,

  299. if you've signed on the dotted line

  300. for a big loan

  301. that is bigger than the amount of money

  302. in your bank account,

  303. don't just close your eyes

  304. and hope it'll all work out for the best.

  305. Proverbs says,

  306. go,

  307. quickly,

  308. humble yourself,

  309. plead,

  310. beg,

  311. say,

  312. I need to get out of this.

  313. I'm sorry.

  314. I spoke too quickly.

  315. Figure out some way

  316. that that won't be hanging over your head

  317. and it won't catch you in the trap.

  318. Don't live by wishful thinking

  319. that everything's going to turn out okay

  320. and call it hope.

  321. Wishful thinking is not hope.

  322. Real hope is based in the promises of God

  323. and in reality.

  324. It's not the same as wishful thinking.

  325. So, Proverbs says,

  326. if you've promised something you can't deliver,

  327. go now and be honest and say,

  328. I'm sorry,

  329. I promised something that I can't follow through on

  330. and I need to figure out how to get out of this.

  331. And also,

  332. don't ask somebody to do these,

  333. don't ask somebody to promise what they can't deliver.

  334. Right?

  335. Sometimes if you're in a hard situation,

  336. I understand,

  337. there's a lot of hard situations that come our way

  338. and it's fine to ask for help.

  339. There's no wrong,

  340. there's no shame in asking for help.

  341. We all need help.

  342. I mean, goodness,

  343. why did Jesus come into the world?

  344. Because we needed a lot more than

  345. a little financial help.

  346. We needed a Savior.

  347. Right?

  348. We all acknowledge that.

  349. So, whatever kind of help you need,

  350. it pales in comparison to the help

  351. we all need from Jesus.

  352. So, there's no shame in asking for help.

  353. But don't put someone in a situation

  354. where you're asking them to promise

  355. what they can't deliver.

  356. Where you're asking them to co-sign

  357. or put up security for a debt

  358. that is putting them

  359. in an enslaving situation.

  360. So, there's some practical implications,

  361. but let me go one step deeper.

  362. Why are we tempted

  363. to make well-intentioned

  364. but irresponsible financial commitments

  365. to other people?

  366. Now, I've done this a few times myself.

  367. And usually, it's one of two things.

  368. It's being afraid of someone's disapproval

  369. if I say no.

  370. The Bible calls that the fear of man.

  371. Or being gratified

  372. because I feel like I'm rescuing someone

  373. and no one else can.

  374. That's called a Savior complex.

  375. Now, sometimes we're called

  376. to spend and be spent

  377. for other people

  378. within the kingdom of God.

  379. To lay down our lives

  380. for each other.

  381. And that certainly means

  382. sharing our material possessions

  383. when people have a real need.

  384. Opening your home.

  385. Right?

  386. Giving your money.

  387. The Apostle John says,

  388. how can you love your brother

  389. or sister in Christ

  390. who's really in need,

  391. who's without food and clothing

  392. if you don't give them

  393. some of your stuff?

  394. If you're not willing to share.

  395. But there's a fine line

  396. between sacrificial giving

  397. and having a Savior complex.

  398. And if you cross that line,

  399. it feels pretty good for a while.

  400. It feels gratifying

  401. because you feel like

  402. you're really rescuing someone

  403. and you're doing what no one else can

  404. and no one else will.

  405. But in the long term,

  406. you will either become codependent

  407. and unhealthily enmeshed

  408. or you will become resentful

  409. and burned out.

  410. If the person continues

  411. to need more and more.

  412. And either way,

  413. you'll only hurt yourself

  414. and the other person in the end.

  415. The Bible says

  416. there's only one Savior.

  417. There's only one Messiah.

  418. It's not me.

  419. It's not you.

  420. And that's good news.

  421. In Job chapter 17, verse 3,

    Job 17:3

  422. Job speaks to God

  423. using some of the language

  424. in this passage.

  425. He says,

  426. give me the pledge you demand.

  427. Who is there

  428. who will put up security for me?

  429. What Job's saying is,

  430. Job goes to God and says,

  431. God, I need you to help me

  432. because I've got nobody.

  433. I've got nobody

  434. who can cover my back.

  435. I'm in a bad situation

  436. and I'm a bad risk.

  437. I've got a bad history.

  438. No one else

  439. will promise themselves for me.

  440. I need you to pledge yourself for me

  441. because nobody else can.

  442. And the message of the Bible

  443. is that's the situation

  444. we're all in,

  445. spiritually speaking,

  446. and Jesus Christ

  447. has paid our greatest debt in full.

  448. Jesus didn't just say,

  449. I'll co-sign with you.

  450. You try to pay it off yourself

  451. and if you can't,

  452. well then,

  453. I guess I'll be there for you.

  454. He said, no,

  455. I'm going to pay it in full,

  456. up front,

  457. for all your sins.

  458. He has paid for all your sins

  459. by His most precious blood

  460. that He shed on the cross.

  461. That's the most precious gift

  462. that we have

  463. that can never be taken away.

  464. So treasure Jesus.

  465. And then He will lead you

  466. to use your money

  467. generously and wisely.

  468. That's the first point

  469. about money.

  470. The second point

  471. concerns our time.

  472. And the warning here

  473. is against passive sluggishness.

  474. Now this section begins

  475. with a positive portrayal

  476. of wisdom

  477. in verses 6 to 8.

  478. Go to the ant,

  479. O sluggard.

  480. Consider her ways

  481. and be wise.

  482. Do you notice

  483. Proverbs is not above

  484. using some sarcasm

  485. and ironic humor

  486. to provoke,

  487. especially in regards

  488. to the sluggard.

  489. Here's some other Proverbs

  490. about the sluggard.

  491. Chapter 26,

  492. verse 14 and 15.

  493. As a door turns

  494. on its hinges,

  495. so a sluggard

  496. turns on his bed.

  497. The sluggard

  498. buries his hand

  499. in the dish.

  500. It wears him out

  501. to bring it back

  502. to his mouth.

  503. Proverbs is not above

  504. using irony and sarcasm.

  505. Sometimes we think

  506. sarcasm is always a sin.

  507. I don't think it's always a sin.

  508. It's right here in the Bible.

  509. Now you've got to be careful

  510. with sarcasm.

  511. You can use it

  512. to cut people down.

  513. But Proverbs use it

  514. to provoke people

  515. who need a little provoking.

  516. But he goes on

  517. to point out

  518. two positive aspects

  519. of wisdom

  520. that the ant exemplifies.

  521. Self-discipline

  522. and diligence

  523. or foresight.

  524. Now ants are very interesting.

  525. I learned something

  526. about ants this week.

  527. Modern scientists

  528. have discovered

  529. that ant colonies,

  530. while they do have

  531. some structure

  532. and leadership,

  533. they don't operate

  534. through a top-down

  535. chain of command.

  536. ant.

  537. There's no one ant,

  538. even the queen,

  539. who is sort of

  540. directing everything

  541. and supervising everyone.

  542. So one scientist

  543. wrote this.

  544. An ant

  545. is a very simple animal.

  546. It can perform

  547. 10 to 40

  548. elementary behaviors.

  549. But ant hills

  550. are very complex.

  551. One can find nursery,

  552. warehouses,

  553. or kitchen gardens.

  554. Some individuals forage,

  555. others take care

  556. of the eggs,

  557. repair the nest,

  558. or protect the ant hill

  559. against miscellaneous threats.

  560. What is the secret?

  561. How can such mindless animals

  562. achieve such complex organization?

  563. In economics,

  564. division of labor

  565. leads to efficiency,

  566. but some sort of supervision

  567. is necessary.

  568. The different tasks

  569. have to be coordinated.

  570. But no such supervisors

  571. exist in ant hills.

  572. No ants,

  573. particularly not the queen,

  574. are able to manage

  575. this exploit.

  576. The coordination

  577. results from

  578. some sort of

  579. self-organization

  580. process.

  581. Now,

  582. Proverbs isn't

  583. precisely anticipating

  584. modern scientific insights.

  585. It's simply making a point

  586. based on general observation.

  587. Ants display

  588. a kind

  589. of self-discipline

  590. and internal

  591. motivation.

  592. And it says

  593. some of us

  594. would do well

  595. to learn from them.

  596. Even though

  597. that sounds humbling

  598. when you think about that.

  599. Self-discipline

  600. and diligent foresight.

  601. Ants are mentioned

  602. in Proverbs 30, 25,

  603. one other time

  604. in the book,

  605. the same point is made.

  606. They are small,

  607. but wise.

  608. They are not strong,

  609. but they provide

  610. their food in the summer.

  611. In other words,

  612. they see an opportunity

  613. and they take it.

  614. They see danger ahead

  615. and they prepare for it.

  616. God provides food

  617. for them in season,

  618. but they go and get it.

  619. If we forget

  620. to sweep

  621. under our kitchen table

  622. after dinner,

  623. you can see that

  624. right in our house.

  625. Right?

  626. The ants,

  627. they're coming,

  628. taking those little

  629. crumbs of bread

  630. and taking them

  631. over to their

  632. little corner.

  633. All right.

  634. So, the ants are a picture

  635. of self-discipline

  636. and foresight

  637. or diligence.

  638. But then in verse 9,

  639. Proverbs turns away

  640. from the ant

  641. and turns back

  642. to the sluggard.

  643. How long will you

  644. lie there,

  645. O sluggard?

  646. When will you arise

  647. from your sleep?

  648. And in verse 10,

  649. we sort of hear

  650. the sluggard's response.

  651. Just a little longer.

  652. A little more sleep.

  653. Just a little snooze.

  654. Just a little rest.

  655. Derek Kidner wrote,

  656. He deceives himself

  657. by the smallness

  658. of his surrenders.

  659. So, by inches and minutes,

  660. his opportunity slips away.

  661. By inches and minutes,

  662. his opportunity

  663. gradually slips away.

  664. A little nap

  665. becomes a long sleep.

  666. And finally,

  667. verse 11,

  668. danger strikes.

  669. Poverty will come upon you

  670. like a robber

  671. and want like an armed man.

  672. Now, this word

  673. translated poverty,

  674. it doesn't just mean

  675. having limited means

  676. or living a simple lifestyle.

  677. It's not the same word

  678. that's usually translated,

  679. the poor,

  680. in the rest of Proverbs

  681. or the Bible.

  682. This word translated poverty

  683. means ruin,

  684. destruction,

  685. destitution.

  686. And here,

  687. it's self,

  688. and pretty much everywhere

  689. it appears,

  690. it's self-inflicted.

  691. That's the warning.

  692. Ruin will come upon you

  693. if you continue

  694. in this passive path.

  695. Now, what exactly

  696. is the problem

  697. with the sluggard,

  698. we might ask?

  699. It's not that he wants

  700. to get a good night's sleep.

  701. Psalm 127,

    Psalms 127:2

  702. verse 2 says,

  703. the Lord grants

  704. to his beloved sleep.

  705. It's a gift sleep.

  706. A good night's sleep

  707. is a gift from God.

  708. Ecclesiastes 5 says,

  709. the sleep of a labor

  710. is sweet.

  711. Think of the last time

  712. you got a really good

  713. workout during the day

  714. and you slept well at night.

  715. Man, it feels good.

  716. You might wake up

  717. a little sore,

  718. but you sleep well

  719. after you work hard

  720. when your body's working right.

  721. The problem is not

  722. that he wants

  723. a good night's sleep.

  724. The problem is not

  725. that he wants

  726. a simple and quiet life.

  727. That's also a biblical virtue,

  728. generally speaking.

  729. The problem with the sluggard

  730. is that he's full

  731. of desires and cravings,

  732. full of hopes

  733. and expectations,

  734. mostly unrealistic ones,

  735. full of opinions

  736. and ideas,

  737. but unwilling to do

  738. the important

  739. and necessary work

  740. to make step-by-step progress.

  741. He doesn't follow through.

  742. He perpetually procrastinates.

  743. He indulges in various

  744. kinds of escapism.

  745. Proverbs talks a lot

  746. about this.

  747. 21-26,

  748. the desire of the sluggard

  749. kills him,

  750. for his hands refuse

  751. to labor.

  752. All day long,

  753. he craves and craves.

  754. It's not that the sluggard

  755. doesn't care about anything

  756. and doesn't want anything.

  757. He wants lots of things,

  758. but he just doesn't

  759. follow through

  760. and do what he needs

  761. to get what he needs.

  762. 13-4,

  763. the soul of the sluggard

  764. craves and gets nothing.

  765. 26-13,

  766. the sluggard says,

  767. there's a lion in the road,

  768. there's a lion in the streets.

  769. In other words,

  770. he makes excuses.

  771. He attaches himself

  772. to excessive

  773. and irrational fears

  774. and lets himself

  775. be driven by those fears

  776. instead of fighting

  777. against those fears.

  778. Maybe you feel those fears.

  779. Crushing anxiety.

  780. Are you fighting against it

  781. or are you just letting yourself

  782. be driven and blown along by them?

  783. Fight against them.

  784. It's hard.

  785. But God will give you strength

  786. and other people

  787. can encourage you.

  788. The sluggard is a perfectionist,

  789. criticizing much

  790. and accomplishing little.

  791. But there's hope

  792. for the sluggard.

  793. Proverbs doesn't abandon

  794. the sluggard to his passivity.

  795. He exhorts him firmly

  796. because there's hope for him

  797. to listen and change

  798. and become wise.

  799. And so Proverbs exhorts us

  800. who may have become sluggish.

  801. Don't live your life

  802. hesitating,

  803. making excuses,

  804. waiting for someone else

  805. to take the lead

  806. when decisive

  807. and courageous action

  808. is called for.

  809. Isn't it true

  810. that the only thing necessary

  811. for the triumph of evil

  812. is that good people do nothing?

  813. Spiritually speaking,

  814. don't be a slugger

  815. in the fight against sin

  816. for righteousness.

  817. Don't ignore a besetting sin,

  818. a habitual sin,

  819. just hoping it'll go away

  820. if you don't think about it

  821. and ignore it

  822. and pretend it's not there.

  823. No, confess it

  824. to a brother or sister in Christ

  825. and face it head on.

  826. Maybe you've had

  827. a major spiritual failure

  828. with lasting effects

  829. on yourself and others.

  830. I want you to know

  831. there is a path

  832. to healing

  833. and restoration

  834. for you,

  835. but it is a painful path

  836. and there are no shortcuts.

  837. You have to dig deep

  838. to pull out the roots

  839. of the poisonous weed

  840. from the soil of your heart.

  841. Otherwise,

  842. it's just going to stay

  843. under the surface

  844. and be liable

  845. to grow back

  846. in a different form.

  847. You have to expose

  848. the shame,

  849. the self-pity

  850. and self-justification,

  851. the lies you've let yourself believe.

  852. Bring all that out

  853. into the light

  854. with the help of mature

  855. brothers and sisters

  856. in Christ.

  857. That's part of the road

  858. to restoration

  859. and healing

  860. and wholeness

  861. and opportunity.

  862. Don't just lie down

  863. by the side of the road

  864. in the slough of despond

  865. and stay there.

  866. It's miserable.

  867. You're just trying

  868. to blind yourself

  869. and not deal with life.

  870. Don't deceive yourself

  871. into thinking

  872. that your sin

  873. will just magically go away

  874. without actually dealing with it.

  875. You can deal with your sin

  876. in light of the cross.

  877. Bring it before the cross

  878. where Jesus died

  879. and paid for it all

  880. and before the empty tomb,

  881. the empty grave

  882. that shows that He has risen

  883. from the dead

  884. and triumphed over sin and death

  885. and in the power

  886. of the Spirit of holiness

  887. who lives in you.

  888. You are not your own.

  889. You belong to Christ.

  890. So rise up,

  891. spiritually speaking.

  892. Rise up from your

  893. spiritual slumber.

  894. The Apostle Paul says this

  895. in Romans 13, 11,

  896. the hour has come

  897. for you to wake up

  898. from your sleep.

  899. The night is far gone.

  900. The day is at hand.

  901. Let us cast off

  902. the works of darkness

  903. and put on the armor of light.

  904. Let us walk properly

  905. as in the daytime,

  906. not in orgies

  907. and drunkenness,

  908. not in sexual immorality

  909. and sensuality,

  910. not in quarreling

  911. and jealousy,

  912. but put on the Lord Jesus Christ

  913. and make no provision

  914. for the flesh

  915. to gratify its desires.

  916. Hebrews 6 says,

  917. we desire each one of you

  918. to show the same earnestness,

  919. to have the full assurance

  920. of hope until the end,

  921. so that you may not be sluggish,

  922. but imitators of those

  923. who through faith

  924. and patience

  925. inherit the promises

  926. of God.

  927. God has given us

  928. the Holy Spirit

  929. to live within us,

  930. to give us

  931. that internal motivation,

  932. the spirit of power

  933. and love

  934. and self-discipline.

  935. So, let's make the most

  936. of the opportunities

  937. God has given us,

  938. even in these days.

  939. So, that's the second point

  940. about our time.

  941. We've dealt with money,

  942. we've dealt with time

  943. and opportunity,

  944. and finally,

  945. we come to our relationships,

  946. the last point.

  947. The last warning

  948. is against malicious

  949. troublemaking

  950. in our relationships.

  951. verse 12 to 19.

  952. Verse 12 begins

  953. with the phrase,

  954. a worthless person.

  955. Literally, the phrase

  956. is a son of Belial,

  957. which is a Hebrew word

  958. used to describe

  959. a person who is useless

  960. for any good purpose

  961. because he is bent

  962. on destruction

  963. and rebellion.

  964. And later,

  965. that word Belial

  966. becomes a name

  967. that's used

  968. for the devil himself.

  969. The father of lies,

  970. destruction,

  971. and rebellion

  972. against God

  973. appears in 2 Corinthians 6.15.

  974. Proverbs go on

  975. to describe this person

  976. who is bent on,

  977. not just in danger

  978. of harming himself,

  979. but actively seeking

  980. to undermine

  981. and bring other people down.

  982. Verse 12 to 15

  983. and verse 16 to 19,

  984. both of these sections,

  985. we see five bodily

  986. expressions of wickedness.

  987. Look down at verse 12.

  988. Crooked speech.

  989. Verse 17,

  990. a lying tongue.

  991. That's the first one,

  992. the tongue.

  993. Second,

  994. verse 13,

  995. winks with his eyes.

  996. Verse 17

  997. talks about haughty eyes.

  998. Third one,

  999. verse 13 again,

  1000. signals with his feet.

  1001. Verse 18,

  1002. talk about feet

  1003. that make haste

  1004. to run to evil.

  1005. Number four,

  1006. points with his finger.

  1007. Verse 13.

  1008. Verse 17

  1009. talks about hands

  1010. that shed innocent blood.

  1011. So we have mouth,

  1012. eyes,

  1013. feet,

  1014. hands,

  1015. our words,

  1016. attitudes,

  1017. and actions.

1018. Every part of this person's life

  1019. has been corrupted

  1020. by sin

  1021. and oriented

  1022. toward destruction.

  1023. and then we come

  1024. to verse 14,

1025. the fifth and final member

  1026. of the series.

  1027. The heart

  1028. with perverted heart

  1029. devises evil.

  1030. In the Bible,

1031. the heart is the center

  1032. of our thinking

  1033. and feeling

  1034. and decision making.

  1035. And it says,

  1036. this person's heart

  1037. is perverted,

  1038. it's twisted,

  1039. it's constantly

  1040. devising

  1041. evil plans.

  1042. You might say,

  1043. what exactly

  1044. do these bodily actions

  1045. in verse 12 and 13

  1046. indicate?

  1047. Maybe some people

  1048. have suggested

  1049. possibly they refer

  1050. to engaging

  1051. in sorcery,

  1052. casting spells,

  1053. or putting curses

  1054. on people.

  1055. More likely,

  1056. they're simply

  1057. secretive signals

  1058. intended to deceive

  1059. or cause harm.

  1060. Maybe it's also

  1061. a picture of

  1062. restless shifting

  1063. and shuffling,

1064. a sign of inner unrest.

  1065. But in verse 14

  1066. and 19,

  1067. we see the effect

  1068. of this person

  1069. on others around him,

  1070. continually sowing discord.

  1071. Verse 14,

  1072. verse 19,

  1073. sowing discord

  1074. among brothers.

  1075. The effect

  1076. of this person

  1077. is he provokes

  1078. bitter conflict,

  1079. strife,

  1080. and dissension,

  1081. breaking apart

  1082. families,

  1083. churches,

  1084. neighborhoods,

  1085. nations,

  1086. driving a wedge

  1087. between husbands

  1088. and wives,

  1089. parents and children,

  1090. fellow church leaders,

  1091. brothers and sisters

  1092. and friends.

1093. This is a dangerous man.

  1094. But verse 15 and 16

  1095. also tell us

  1096. that he is destined

  1097. for final

  1098. and irreversible judgment.

  1099. He seeks to ruin

  1100. his victims,

  1101. but ultimately

  1102. he will ruin himself.

  1103. He overthrows God's order

1104. so he will one day

  1105. be overthrown.

  1106. He sheds innocent blood

  1107. so one day

  1108. he will be broken

  1109. beyond healing.

  1110. He will get exactly

  1111. what he deserves.

  1112. Verse 16 says

  1113. the first time,

  1114. verse 16 is

  1115. the first time

  1116. that the Lord's name

  1117. is mentioned

  1118. in this chapter

  1119. and it says

  1120. the Lord hates

  1121. the thoughts,

  1122. the attitudes,

  1123. the words,

  1124. the actions,

  1125. the influence

  1126. of such a person.

  1127. They are an abomination

  1128. to him.

1129. This is very strong language.

  1130. Now what's the point

  1131. of this vivid description

  1132. of a malicious

  1133. troublemaker

  1134. and his inevitable demise?

  1135. Well, one,

  1136. I think there's a warning

  1137. against associating

  1138. too closely

1139. with a person like this.

  1140. We saw that back

  1141. in chapter 1

  1142. with a warning

  1143. against following

  1144. the crowd

  1145. into wickedness.

  1146. It's also a warning

  1147. against becoming

  1148. like this man

  1149. in part

  1150. even if not

  1151. in whole.

  1152. One commentator

  1153. put it this way,

  1154. the reader

  1155. of this section

  1156. can almost catch

  1157. the superior look

  1158. and the shifty talk

  1159. and may wonder

  1160. when his own hands

  1161. were last employed

  1162. to an innocent

  1163. person's detriment.

1164. When was the last time

  1165. you were

  1166. ruminating

  1167. in your heart

  1168. about someone

  1169. who has wronged you

  1170. or who has done

  1171. wrong to others?

  1172. What were you

  1173. ruminating about?

  1174. Were you praying

  1175. that God would bring

  1176. them to repentance?

  1177. Were you praying

  1178. for their ultimate good?

  1179. Or were you plotting

  1180. ways that you could

  1181. undermine them

  1182. in return?

1183. When was the last time

  1184. you participated

  1185. in gossip?

  1186. We could define

  1187. gossip as talking

  1188. with someone

  1189. who is neither

  1190. part of the problem

1191. nor part of the solution.

  1192. Proverbs 16, 28

  1193. says,

  1194. a whisperer,

  1195. that is,

  1196. someone who gossips,

  1197. separates close friends.

  1198. So there's a warning

  1199. in this picture

  1200. of becoming

  1201. like this person.

  1202. There's also

  1203. a comfort

  1204. if you're

  1205. on the receiving

  1206. end

  1207. of someone

  1208. who sows discord

  1209. and tears

  1210. relationships apart

  1211. and bears

  1212. false witness.

  1213. Maybe you've been

  1214. on the receiving

  1215. end

  1216. of a person

  1217. like this.

  1218. And the comfort

  1219. here

  1220. is that those

  1221. who continually

  1222. and unrepentantly

  1223. sow discord

  1224. will not escape

  1225. God's judgment.

  1226. encouragement.

  1227. So it's an encouragement.

  1228. Don't repay evil

  1229. for evil

  1230. but to overcome

  1231. evil with good.

  1232. To love even

  1233. your enemies

  1234. and to do good

1235. to those who hate you

  1236. because vengeance

  1237. is mine

  1238. says the Lord.

  1239. This passage warns

  1240. against the divisive

  1241. person but

  1242. we also see

  1243. in the Scriptures

  1244. encouragements

  1245. to pursue unity

  1246. and humility.

  1247. This person

  1248. is characterized

  1249. by pride

  1250. and divisiveness.

  1251. The opposite

  1252. is humility

  1253. and unity.

  1254. Psalm 133

  1255. says,

  1256. how good

  1257. and pleasant

  1258. it is

  1259. when brothers

  1260. and sisters

  1261. dwell together

  1262. in unity

  1263. for there

  1264. the Lord

  1265. has commanded

  1266. His blessing

  1267. even life

  1268. forevermore.

  1269. Or consider

  1270. the Beatitudes

  1271. that we read

  1272. earlier in the service.

  1273. Jesus' words

  1274. in Matthew 5

  1275. what do they

  1276. start with?

  1277. Blessed are

  1278. the poor

  1279. in spirit.

  1280. Do you notice

  1281. the list

  1282. in verse 17

  1283. begins with

  1284. haughty eyes

  1285. pride.

  1286. Jesus

  1287. begins

  1288. with humility.

  1289. That's where

  1290. it all starts.

  1291. You have to enter

  1292. the kingdom of God

  1293. with humility

  1294. like a child

  1295. acknowledging

  1296. your total dependence

  1297. on the unmerited

  1298. grace of God

  1299. humbling yourself

  1300. admitting

  1301. I'm a sinner

  1302. and crying out

  1303. to God

  1304. like the tax collector

  1305. in the temple

  1306. saying Lord

  1307. have mercy on me

  1308. Lord make atonement

  1309. for me

  1310. cover me

  1311. I'm a sinner

  1312. and I don't deserve

  1313. your righteousness

  1314. I need you.

  1315. That's where

  1316. it all starts.

  1317. And then

  1318. verse 18

  1319. in the middle

  1320. talks about

  1321. a heart

  1322. that devises

  1323. wicked plans

  1324. but the

  1325. Beatitudes

  1326. in the middle

  1327. speak about

  1328. those who are

  1329. pure in heart

  1330. who hunger

  1331. and thirst

  1332. for God's

  1333. righteousness

  1334. and that's

  1335. what happens

  1336. when we become

  1337. born again

  1338. when we get

  1339. regenerated

  1340. and come alive

  1341. in Christ

  1342. God gives us

  1343. a new heart

  1344. if you look

  1345. to

  1346. if you have

  1347. looked to Christ

  1348. and put your faith

  1349. in Him

  1350. it means He has

  1351. already put that

  1352. new heart in you

  1353. that's why you're

  1354. looking to Christ

  1355. if you're being

  1356. drawn toward Christ

  1357. maybe God's

  1358. in the process

  1359. of doing that

  1360. He is

  1361. implanting His

  1362. Word in you

  1363. giving you a heart

  1364. that hungers

  1365. and thirsts

  1366. for God

  1367. for His presence

  1368. for His glory

  1369. and we can pray

  1370. Lord renew my heart

  1371. you've given me

  1372. a new heart

  1373. in Christ

  1374. by your grace

  1375. fill me

  1376. in a fresh way

  1377. with your spirit

  1378. renew me

  1379. we start

  1380. with humility

  1381. and the new heart

  1382. that comes

  1383. from the new

  1384. covenant

  1385. in Christ

  1386. the result

  1387. is

  1388. peacemaking

  1389. right

  1390. number seven

  1391. in the list

  1392. in Proverbs

    Proverbs 7:19

  1393. chapter 7

  1394. verse 19

  1395. is sowing discord

  1396. among brothers

  1397. number seven

  1398. in the Beatitudes

  1399. blessed are the

  1400. peacemakers

  1401. humility

  1402. and a renewed

  1403. heart

  1404. that's changed

  1405. by God's grace

  1406. leads to

  1407. making peace

  1408. peace

  1409. and Ephesians 2

  1410. says Christ

  1411. Himself

  1412. is our peace

  1413. He suffered

  1414. and died

  1415. to make us

  1416. one in Him

  1417. to reconcile

  1418. us to God

  1419. in one body

  1420. through His cross

  1421. and that's why

  1422. Ephesians 4

  1423. says make

  1424. every effort

  1425. to keep

  1426. the unity

  1427. of the Spirit

  1428. in the bond

  1429. of peace

  1430. peacemaking

  1431. is not easy

  1432. it's not just

  1433. being

  1434. always having

  1435. a smile

  1436. on your face

  1437. and being nice

  1438. and pretending

  1439. nothing ever

  1440. goes wrong

  1441. that's not

  1442. biblical peacemaking

  1443. it's not

  1444. pretending

  1445. nothing ever

  1446. went wrong

  1447. what does it

  1448. mean to be

  1449. a peacemaker

  1450. well

  1451. sometimes it

  1452. means to

  1453. forbear

  1454. patiently

  1455. and prayerfully

  1456. that means

  1457. you tolerate

  1458. others weaknesses

  1459. because you

  1460. value them

  1461. and what the

  1462. Lord is doing

  1463. in them

  1464. sometimes it

  1465. means to

  1466. confront

  1467. lovingly

  1468. and truthfully

  1469. and speak

  1470. the truth

  1471. because you

  1472. care about

  1473. the person's

  1474. growth

  1475. in the

  1476. Lord

  1477. sometimes it

  1478. means to

  1479. acknowledge

  1480. our own

  1481. faults

  1482. even if we

  1483. think I was

  1484. only 5%

  1485. of the problem

  1486. and they

  1487. were 95%

  1488. well have you

  1489. acknowledged

  1490. your 5%

  1491. because that's

  1492. the only

  1493. that's the part

  1494. you will be

  1495. responsible

  1496. before God

  1497. for

  1498. not what they

  1499. did to you

  1500. but you

  1501. will be

  1502. responsible

  1503. before God

  1504. for your

  1505. part

  1506. to be

  1507. willing to

  1508. extend

  1509. forgiveness

  1510. as Christ

  1511. has forgiven

  1512. us

  1513. right

  1514. we can only

  1515. do this

  1516. we can only

  1517. be a peacemaker

  1518. through the

  1519. power of

  1520. Christ

  1521. through the

  1522. new heart

  1523. he's given

  1524. us

  1525. through the

  1526. power of

  1527. his cross

  1528. through the

  1529. Holy Spirit

  1530. this passage

  1531. is full of

  1532. warnings

  1533. we've seen

  1534. these warnings

  1535. against

  1536. well-intentioned

  1537. irresponsible

  1538. financial decisions

  1539. against

  1540. passive

  1541. sluggishness

  1542. with our

  1543. time

  1544. against

  1545. active

  1546. malice

  1547. in our

  1548. relationships

  1549. but it's

  1550. an invitation

  1551. in each

  1552. of these

  1553. areas

  1554. to look

  1555. to our

  1556. all-sufficient

  1557. God

  1558. Father

  1559. Son

  1560. and Holy

  1561. Spirit

  1562. to look

  1563. to our

  1564. Heavenly

  1565. Father

  1566. who sovereignly

  1567. provides

  1568. for the

  1569. needs

  1570. of each

  1571. of his

  1572. children

  1573. who has

  1574. been so

  1575. generous

  1576. in welcoming

  1577. us

  1578. into his

  1579. family

  1580. to look

  1581. to our

  1582. Savior

  1583. Jesus

  1584. Christ

  1585. who is

  1586. our

  1587. peace

  1588. who

  1589. reconciles

  1590. us to

  1591. God

  1592. and makes

  1593. us

  1594. peacemakers

  1595. by his

  1596. Spirit

  1597. living in

  1598. us

  1599. and to

  1600. live in

  1601. the power

  1602. of the

  1603. Holy Spirit

  1604. our

  1605. Comforter

  1606. who equips

  1607. and empowers

  1608. us to

  1609. not be

  1610. sluggish

  1611. but to

  1612. do the

  1613. good works

  1614. that God

  1615. has prepared

  1616. in advance

  1617. for us

  1618. to do

  1619. we have

  1620. an all

  1621. sufficient

  1622. God

  1623. so may

  1624. we glorify

  1625. him in

  1626. our money

  1627. in our

  1628. time

  1629. in our

  1630. relationships

  1631. let's

  1632. pray

  1633. Father

  1634. in heaven

  1635. we thank

  1636. you for

  1637. speaking to

  1638. us through

  1639. your word

  1640. we thank

  1641. you even

  1642. for these

  1643. warnings

  1644. that you

  1645. give us

  1646. through the

  1647. book of

  1648. Proverbs

  1649. against

  1650. potential

  1651. and actual

  1652. dangers

  1653. that we

  1654. can fall

  1655. into

  1656. we thank

  1657. you Lord

  1658. that you

  1659. are an

  1660. all sufficient

  1661. Savior

  1662. we thank

  1663. you that

  1664. we can

  1665. look to

  1666. you

  1667. and be

  1668. renewed

  1669. in our

  1670. heart

  1671. Lord we

  1672. pray that

  1673. you would

  1674. take these

  1675. words and

  1676. apply them to

  1677. each of our

  1678. hearts by

  1679. the power of

  1680. your Holy

  1681. Spirit

  1682. and help us

  1683. to look to

  1684. you this

  1685. week and

  1686. in the days

  1687. ahead that

  1688. we may bring

  1689. glory to

  1690. you in

  1691. our money

  1692. in our

  1693. time in

  1694. our

  1695. relationships

  1696. because you

  1697. have called

  1698. us to be

  1699. your very

  1700. own

  1701. love and

  1702. have loved

  1703. us with

  1704. an everlasting

  1705. love

  1706. we pray this

  1707. in Christ's

  1708. name

  1709. amen

  1710. we

  1711. be

  1712. see you

  1713. I

  1714. you

  1715. you
