  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. This summer, if you've been with us, you know we're studying the book of Proverbs,

  3. and Proverbs is a very practical book, isn't it?

  4. Last week, Pastor Greg got down to some of the nitty-gritty of the things that we're

  5. going to see in the book of Proverbs this summer.

  6. And one of the benefits of teaching straight through a passage of Scripture, like this

  7. opening section of Proverbs, is that it brings before us topics that otherwise we might choose

  8. to avoid, like this opening, like the chapters we'll be looking at this morning, which are

  9. all about wisdom and your sex life.

  10. One of the great things about preaching about sex is that I don't have to write a sermon

  11. introduction, because I just say we're preaching about sex and everyone pays attention.

  12. It's excellent.

  13. Now, remember, these opening chapters of Proverbs, chapters 1 through 9, they're cast mostly

    Proverbs 1 chapter mention

  14. in the form of speeches of a father to his son.

  15. And we'll be looking at three of these speeches this morning in chapters 5, 6, and 7, each of

  16. which has to do with wisdom and sex.

  17. So, in essence, what we have here in Proverbs through the literary voice of a father speaking

  18. to his son is God, our heavenly father, coming to us as children with infinite wisdom and

  19. infinite grace and saying to us, let's have a talk.

  20. And I think if we were to boil down what these three speeches are saying, I think we could sum

  21. it up in two big points.

  22. First, because sexual folly destroys, run from it.

  23. And second, because sexual wisdom satisfies, delight in it.

  24. Because sexual folly destroys, run from it.

  25. Because sexual wisdom satisfies, delight in it.

  26. So, let's jump in at Proverbs chapter 5, verse 1, and hear the wisdom our heavenly father has

    Proverbs 5:1

  27. for us when it comes to this all-important area of sex.

  28. That's page 530 in the Pew Bible, if you want to turn there with me.

  29. Page 530, Proverbs chapter 5.

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  30. Let's start with Proverbs chapter 5, verses 1 through 14.

    Proverbs 5:1–14

  31. My son, be attentive to my wisdom.

  32. Incline your ear to my understanding, that you may keep discretion and your lips may guard

  33. knowledge.

  34. For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil.

  35. But in the end, she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

  36. Her feet go down to death.

  37. Her steps follow the path to Sheol.

  38. She does not ponder the path of life.

  39. Her ways wander, and she does not know it.

  40. And now, O sons, listen to me.

  41. Do not depart from the words of my mouth.

  42. Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house.

  43. Lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the merciless.

  44. Lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner.

  45. And at the end of your life, you groan when your flesh and body are consumed, and you say,

  46. how I hated discipline, and how my heart despised reproof.

  47. I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors.

  48. I'm at the brink of utter ruin in the assembled congregation.

  49. So, here's the first thing our Heavenly Father wants us to know.

  50. Because sexual folly destroys, run from it.

  51. Keep your way far from it, verse 8 says.

  52. Now, in these chapters, we meet the character of the forbidden woman.

  53. Other translations you have might read the adulterous woman.

  54. And this character in the book of Proverbs represents sexual expression outside of what God intends,

  55. outside of what God designed.

  56. As we'll see in a minute, in the rest of chapter 5, God created sex to be fully enjoyed in the lifelong covenant of marriage.

  57. Sex inside of marriage is a good thing.

  58. But sex outside of marriage brings ruin.

  59. As one writer said, sex is like fire.

  60. Inside a fireplace, it keeps us warm.

  61. Outside the fireplace, it burns the house down.

  62. Now, before we go any further, you might be wondering,

  63. why does sexual folly here have to be described as a woman?

  64. That doesn't seem very fair, right?

  65. I mean, aren't men just as guilty of sexual folly as women?

  66. Well, if you're thinking that, actually, the Bible would totally agree with you.

  67. Men aren't any better than women in this regard.

  68. I think the reason why the forbidden woman is a woman here is because of the literary form of the passage.

  69. Remember, it's a father speaking to his son.

  70. But as we've said before, these speeches are intended not just for sons, but for all of us, for the whole people of God.

  71. Both sons and daughters are meant to put themselves in the place of the son in these chapters and translate it, apply it accordingly to their lives.

  72. In other words, Proverbs is really saying here, beware of those who would tempt you to sexual folly, whether male or female.

  73. And the first thing we need to know is that there will be temptation.

  74. And at first, what will come at us will seem sweet and smooth.

  75. Look again at verse 3.

  76. With lips sweeter than honey, with words smoother than oil, sexual folly will come at you promising something sweet and smooth.

  77. Something fun.

  78. Something pleasurable, real, lasting.

  79. But the Father wants us to get the whole picture here.

  80. He wants us to see that under the surface appeal lies hidden destruction.

  81. Look at verse 4.

  82. But in the end, it is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

  83. What promised to be sweet and smooth in the end is bitter and piercing.

  84. And instead of leading to life, it leads to the grave.

  85. But in the end.

  86. So much of wisdom, you know, is beginning with the end in mind.

  87. It's picking your head up from the immediate, from the now, from instant gratification, to view life as a whole.

  88. To see things from the perspective of the end.

  89. And what's the end of sexual folly?

  90. What's the end of pursuing sex outside of God's good design?

  91. The middle of Proverbs 5 starts to lay that out for us.

  92. And Proverbs 6, 20 through 35 unpacks it even more.

  93. Here, the Father's showing us the consequences.

  94. In verses 9 through 11 of chapter 5, we see that the pursuit of sexual folly will cost us dearly.

  95. Look at the list.

  96. Our honor, our years, our strength, our labors, even our flesh and bones will be consumed.

  97. In other words, it destroys our reputation, our wealth, our vigor.

  98. In the long run, all of it will be sucked out of us, the Father says.

  99. Now, does that sound exaggerated to you?

  100. I think it does, doesn't it?

  101. I think it sounds exaggerated because our world tells us over and over again

  102. that sexual expression and permissiveness is the key to happiness, life, and vigor.

  103. If you want to turn the engine on real life, you've got to turn the engine on sexual expression.

  104. Right?

  105. I mean, show me, show me a movie plot or a TV show

  106. where happiness is found in a married couple sticking it out through hardship

  107. and I will show you 20 where happiness lies in pursuing a relationship outside of marriage.

  108. But this is why we need the wisdom of Proverbs so badly.

  109. Because even though these are the stories we keep telling ourselves,

  110. in the end, they never come true.

  111. Instead, what's true is what verses 12 through 14 go on to describe.

  112. Sexual folly will bring deep regret.

  113. It destroys our conscience.

  114. In the end, you will look back and say,

  115. how I hated discipline, how my heart despised reproof.

  116. That's the voice of remorse, of regret.

  117. I knew what I should have done and I didn't do it.

  118. And now I've lost everything.

  119. If you look over at Proverbs chapter 6, starting in verse 20,

    Proverbs 6 chapter mention

  120. it picks up the same theme.

  121. This is the second of those three speeches about sex in the opening chapters of Proverbs.

  122. And here, the father unpacks the consequences of sexual folly in even greater detail.

  123. In verses 27 through 29, he shows us that the pain of sexual folly is inevitable.

  124. Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned?

  125. Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched?

  126. The answer is no.

  127. So is he who goes into his neighbor's wife.

  128. None who touches her will go unpunished.

  129. And even though the warning here is against adultery in particular,

  130. the same applies to sexual sin across the board.

  131. It's a fire that will inevitably consume you.

  132. Last, in verses 30 through 33 of chapter 6, we see that sexual folly brings ongoing shame.

  133. People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his appetite when he's hungry.

  134. But if he's caught, he will pay sevenfold.

  135. He will give all the goods of his house.

  136. He who commits adultery lacks sense.

  137. He who does it destroys himself.

  138. He will get wounds and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be wiped away.

  139. Proverbs is making a lesser to greater argument here, you see.

  140. If a person who steals when they're hungry still has to pay sevenfold when they're caught,

  141. how much greater and how much certain will the penalty be for the one who commits adultery?

  142. His disgrace will not be wiped away.

  143. There will be ongoing shame.

  144. And again, this sounds like an exaggeration to our ears, doesn't it?

  145. Is sexual folly really that bad?

  146. Is it really that costly?

  147. Is that really where it ends?

  148. But friends, despite what we see in our movies or hear in our pop songs,

  149. despite what we read in our magazines,

  150. despite what our friends might tell us,

  151. our Heavenly Father is telling us what's true and what's for our good.

  152. You know, in all the couples that Beth and I have done pre-marriage counseling with,

  153. we've never met a single person who said,

  154. you know, I'm really glad I had all those sexual experiences before marriage.

  155. I feel like they really prepared me well for what's ahead.

  156. No one has said that.

  157. Not a single one.

  158. Instead, all of them would erase their past sexual folly in a second if they could.

  159. So if sexual folly destroys, what should be our response?

  160. And Proverbs is very clear.

  161. Run.

  162. Keep your path far from it.

  163. Again and again, that's the Father's wisdom to His Son, to us.

  164. Chapter 5, verse 8.

  165. Keep your way far from her.

  166. Do not go near the door of her house.

  167. Chapter 6, verse 25.

  168. Do not desire her beauty in your heart.

  169. Do not let her capture you with her eyelashes.

  170. You see the advice?

  171. Physically and mentally, geographically and intellectually,

  172. go the opposite direction.

  173. In chapter 7, we have one last speech that illustrates this for us.

  174. The Father here tells us a story, a parable.

  175. In verse 6, he says,

  176. One day I looked out my window and here's what I saw.

  177. Let's pick up the drama in verse 7 of chapter 7.

  178. And I've seen among the simple, I've perceived among the youths,

  179. a young man lacking sense, passing along the street near her corner,

  180. taking the road to her house in twilight in the evening,

  181. at the time of night and darkness.

  182. In other words, here's a young person in the wrong place at the wrong time,

  183. foolishly wandering into danger.

  184. Verse 10,

  185. And behold, the woman meets him dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.

  186. She's loud and wayward.

  187. Her feet do not stay at home.

  188. Now in the street, now in the market, and in every corner she lies in wait.

  189. She seizes him and kisses him.

  190. And with bold face, she says to him,

  191. I had to offer sacrifices, and today I've paid my vows.

  192. In other words, under the veneer of religion,

  193. she's come back from the temple with a costly meal,

  194. an expensive meal that she's going to share with him.

  195. 15.

  196. So now I've come out to meet you, to seek you eagerly, and I found you.

  197. There's the flattery.

  198. You're the one I've been waiting for.

  199. There's no one like you.

  200. 16.

  201. I've spread my couch with coverings, colored linens from Egyptian linen.

  202. I've perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

  203. Come, let us take our fill of love till morning.

  204. Let us delight ourselves with love.

  205. For my husband's not at home.

  206. He's gone on a long journey.

  207. He took a bag of money with him.

  208. At full moon, he'll come home.

  209. In other words, no one will find us.

  210. We won't get caught, and there won't be any consequences.

  211. Do you see how powerful the temptation comes?

  212. It's attacking this foolish youth at every level.

  213. His pride, his ego, his sense of physical desire.

  214. And that's how it comes at us as well.

  215. You know, sexual folly is not going to show up at your doorstep and say,

  216. hey, if you want a big costly load of shame and regret, I'm the one for you.

  217. No, sexual folly will come and make you feel special.

  218. I've waited for you.

  219. You're the one for me.

  220. This is true love.

  221. And it will promise you the heights of pleasure without any consequence.

  222. Comfort, escape, delight with no consequence.

  223. No one's home.

  224. No one will find out.

  225. No one will get hurt.

  226. But that's not how it ends.

  227. Pick up in verse 21.

  228. With much seductive speech, she persuades him.

  229. With her smooth talk, she compels him.

  230. All at once, he follows her as an ox goes to the slaughter.

  231. Or as a stag is caught fast till an arrow pierces its liver.

  232. As a bird rushes into a snare, he does not know that it will cost him his life.

  233. Like an ox marching to his own slaughter.

  234. That's a vivid image, isn't it?

  235. It's an image meant to bring us to our senses and to get us to listen.

  236. Verse 24,

  237. You know, one of the things we often tell ourselves in the face of temptation, particularly sexual temptation,

  238. is that our situation is different.

  239. We're not like all those other people.

  240. I can handle this movie.

  241. I can handle this website.

  242. It won't suck me in.

  243. Or what I have with this other person, it's the real thing.

  244. We're not like all those other couples who are having an affair.

  245. We're in love.

  246. This is different.

  247. But verse 27, again, is telling us the truth.

  248. The victims are many.

  249. The slain are a mighty throng.

  250. In other words, you are no different.

  251. And we will not escape.

  252. And so we need to do the exact opposite of the foolish young man in this parable.

  253. We need to keep ourselves far from the path of sexual folly.

  254. Like Joseph in the house of Potiphar, we need to run in the opposite direction.

  255. So what does that look like practically?

  256. Can we just be real honest for a second?

  257. Most of us in this room have a ticking time bomb of sexual folly right in our pockets.

  258. And it's not just guys.

  259. I saw a statistic recently that one-third of women are viewing pornography every week.

  260. And you know where most of it's happening?

  261. No surprise.

  262. Friends, what are we going to do as a body of believers to stay out of the path of sexual folly?

  263. Parents, are you monitoring and engaging in conversation with your kids about what they're doing and seeing on their devices?

  264. And the conversations that they're having with their friends?

  265. Are you talking with them about this stuff?

  266. Do you know how to use the parental controls on their phones so you can protect them from spiritual danger?

  267. If not, what are you going to do this afternoon to figure that out?

  268. Don't wait until tomorrow.

  269. And if you don't know, figure it out.

  270. Talk to me.

  271. Talk to Matt.

  272. Talk to Jeff.

  273. Talk to one of the elders.

  274. Start to do some Google searches on how these things actually work.

  275. And figure out how you can come alongside your son or daughter and walk with them in the midst of this.

  276. And students, high schoolers, middle schoolers, I know who you are.

  277. If you have a phone or a tablet that your parents aren't plugged into and helping you with, here's your homework assignment.

  278. Invite them to do so.

  279. Welcome them into your space.

  280. Welcome their wisdom and protection.

  281. I know that might sound totally crazy.

  282. And cramping your style.

  283. But, imagine you wake up in the middle of the night, your house is on fire, and your bedroom is filling with smoke.

  284. And your mom or dad comes in with a fire extinguisher and an oxygen mask to rescue you and get you out of there safely.

  285. My bet is that you wouldn't complain that they're being overbearing and all up in your space.

  286. Just let me roast in my bed, dad.

  287. You're not going to tell them that.

  288. You're going to be like,

  289. Mom, dad, I love you.

  290. I missed you.

  291. Thank you.

  292. I'm a four-year-old again.

  293. Because, friends, here's the deal.

  294. Spiritually, we're all in that situation.

  295. And we need help.

  296. We need help.

  297. We need help.

  298. Now, more than half of us here aren't living at home with our parents.

  299. So, what are you going to do to stay far from the path of sexual folly?

  300. Are you willing to download an app like Covenant Eyes or X3 Watch on your phone

  301. and get a trusted mentor to track with you, to get into your story, and to help you?

  302. Look, I know those apps clunk up your phone, and I know that there are ways to get around them,

  303. and I know they're not foolproof, but at least it's a start.

  304. At least it's being intentional about living your life and staying far from the path.

  305. Maybe this week you need to get coffee with someone and say,

  306. I need help.

  307. Will you help me keep far from the path of sexual folly?

  308. Ask me hard questions.

  309. Help me get the right software on my devices.

  310. Be intentionally intrusive in my life.

  311. I'm opening up the door for you to step in and help me.

  312. And if you don't know who to ask in that regard,

  313. start with someone you trust in your small group.

  314. And if you're not in a small group, get into one.

  315. And if someone asks you to be that person for them,

  316. and you have no idea how to do that well,

  317. then come talk to one of us pastors and we can coach you on how to do it.

  318. We can come alongside you and point you into the right direction for resources

  319. and give you questions to ask and give you ways to pray for that brother or sister who's coming to you

  320. so we can do this together.

  321. But of course, sexual folly doesn't just come at us in our phones, does it?

  322. So for you, maybe there are other decisions you need to make,

  323. other ways you need to stay far from the path.

  324. Do you need to change the way you drive or the way you walk to work?

  325. Do you need to change some of the media you consume?

  326. Do you need to change the friends you spend time with?

  327. Do you need to change the job scenario that you're in?

  328. I know each one of those is costly, but it's worth it.

  329. And how is your thought life?

  330. Are you being intentional with what happens in your mind?

  331. Are you taking every thought captive for Christ's sake?

  332. When you see an image in the checkout line or when an old memory comes back to you in that moment,

  333. what do you do?

  334. Well, friends, here's what you can do.

  335. In that moment, pray for the Holy Spirit's help.

  336. The Holy Spirit is nearer to you

  337. than any of those distractions.

  338. Pray for His help to look away,

  339. to leave those thoughts behind,

  340. and to begin setting your mind on the good gifts

  341. that God has given you to rightfully enjoy.

  342. Interestingly, in a number of places in the New Testament,

  343. what's the antidote to sexual immorality?

  344. It's gratitude.

  345. Cultivating a heart of gratitude and praise of God

  346. from the New Testament perspective

  347. is what will wither away the roots of sexual folly in your life.

  348. Because ultimately, friends,

  349. the truth is,

  350. you have to fight fire with fire.

  351. Desire will only be overcome by a greater desire.

  352. When the desire of sexual folly comes blazing in,

  353. yes, you need to get away,

  354. but deeper still,

  355. you need to have a greater,

  356. brighter flame

  357. that's burning in your heart.

  358. And here's where the second big point of the passage comes in.

  359. We're only going to touch on this briefly because of time.

  360. But we said that sexual folly destroys,

  361. so we must run from it.

  362. But what are we running to?

  363. Go back to chapter 5.

  364. Pick up the rest of the Father's first speech.

  365. And in the rest of chapter 5,

  366. we see part of the answer.

  367. Part of the answer.

  368. Proverbs 5,

    Proverbs 5:15–20

  369. verse 15 through 20.

  370. Stay far from the woman of folly,

  371. but drink water from your own cistern,

  372. flowing water from your own well.

  373. Should your springs be scattered abroad,

  374. streams of water in the streets,

  375. let them be for yourself alone

  376. and not for strangers with you.

  377. Let your fountain be blessed.

  378. And then he raises the curtain on the metaphor.

  379. And rejoice in the wife of your youth.

  380. A lovely dear, a graceful doe,

  381. let her breasts fill you at all times

  382. with delight,

  383. be intoxicated always in her love.

  384. Why should you be intoxicated,

  385. my son, with a forbidden woman

  386. and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?

  387. The Father is telling the Son

  388. that because sexual wisdom satisfies,

  389. we must delight in it.

  390. And here in chapter 5,

  391. that means enjoying sex

  392. in the lifelong covenant of marriage.

  393. Paul will teach the same thing

  394. in 1 Corinthians chapter 7.

    1 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  395. Husbands and wives

  396. are to mutually give

  397. the good gift of sexual intimacy

  398. to one another joyfully,

  399. gladly,

  400. gladly,

  401. frequently.

  402. You see, friends,

  403. the Bible isn't embarrassed

  404. about human sexuality.

  405. It's a reality to rejoice in,

  406. and the proper context for it

  407. is the security and trust

  408. of the whole life commitment of marriage.

  409. But why is that so?

  410. Why is the exclusive covenant of marriage

  411. the only context God designed for sex?

  412. Well, there are lots of answers

  413. we could give to that,

  414. but the ultimate answer,

  415. biblically speaking,

  416. is this.

  417. Because God designed sex

  418. from the very beginning

  419. to be a picture,

  420. to be a picture of His exclusive,

  421. self-giving love

  422. and union

  423. to His bride,

  424. the church.

  425. We heard echoes of this

  426. in our passage from Isaiah

  427. earlier,

  428. didn't we?

  429. I am your husband,

  430. the Lord tells

  431. the people in Isaiah's day.

  432. In Ezekiel,

  433. in the opening chapters of Ezekiel,

  434. I think around 16,

  435. the metaphor gets even stronger.

  436. The Lord

  437. found His people,

  438. loved them,

  439. took them to Himself,

  440. made them His own,

  441. and yet,

  442. they ran away,

  443. whoring,

  444. Ezekiel says,

  445. after other lovers.

  446. And yet,

  447. though the Lord

  448. would be fully just

  449. in divorcing them,

  450. casting them off,

  451. leaving them in their sin and shame,

  452. what does He do?

  453. He takes them to Himself once more.

  454. He washes them clean.

  455. He renews His covenant with them,

  456. never to forsake them.

  457. Perhaps the most vivid picture

  458. of all this

  459. is found in the prophet Hosea.

  460. God tells Hosea

  461. to do something

  462. that seems absurd.

  463. He says,

  464. Hosea,

  465. I want you to go marry

  466. an unfaithful wife.

  467. And even when she leaves him

  468. for other lovers,

  469. God tells Hosea

  470. to go into the marketplace

  471. and buy her back.

  472. To pay whatever price

  473. her new lovers demand

  474. and bring her home.

  475. To be unswervingly faithful to her

  476. despite her sin.

  477. And God tells Hosea to do that

  478. because He says,

  479. that's how I love my people.

  480. And I want through you,

  481. I want you to be a picture

  482. of the faithful love

  483. that I have for my people.

  484. That though they had run

  485. after other lovers,

  486. other gods,

  487. other lords,

  488. He would buy them back.

  489. He would pay the price

  490. and He would establish

  491. His unbreakable covenant

  492. with them forever.

  493. And friends,

  494. when the fullness of time

  495. had come,

  496. after 400 years

  497. of prophetic silence,

  498. God literally came

  499. to give back

  500. His wayward bride.

  501. Friends,

  502. it's no accident

  503. that Jesus' first miracle

  504. turning water into wine

  505. was at a wedding feast.

  506. And throughout His ministry,

  507. Jesus was constantly

  508. saying things like,

  509. how can the wedding guests fast

  510. when the bridegroom

  511. is with them?

  512. Referring to Himself.

  513. He is the groom.

  514. Come for His bride.

  515. And because the sins

  516. of His bride

  517. were so great

  518. and because the weight

  519. of their infidelity

  520. was so heavy

  521. and because His love

  522. for us was so faithful,

  523. Jesus,

  524. our true spouse,

  525. went to the cross

  526. and there He shouldered

  527. the betrayal

  528. and the shame

  529. and the cost of our sin.

  530. There He groaned

  531. and His flesh

  532. and body were consumed

  533. for us

  534. and our place

  535. to ransom us.

  536. And three days later,

  537. our love arose again,

  538. conquering shame

  539. and death,

  540. ascended to the Father,

  541. poured out the Spirit

  542. and now,

  543. Jesus is gathering

  544. His bride

  545. from every tribe,

  546. tongue, and nation

  547. through the proclamation

  548. of the gospel,

  549. preparing us

  550. for the future wedding feast

  551. when He returns

  552. and makes all things new.

  553. Why is sex

  554. only for marriage?

  555. Because sex

  556. and marriage

  557. are part of a story

  558. that's so much bigger

  559. than you and me.

  560. They're pointers

  561. to the story

  562. of God's faithful,

  563. exclusive,

  564. covenant-keeping love

  565. for His bride,

  566. the church,

  567. of His union with us

  568. and for all

  569. who repent and believe.

  570. And that means

  571. two things

  572. as we close.

  573. First,

  574. for singles,

  575. there's an even

  576. greater fire

  577. for you to stoke

  578. against the flames

  579. of sexual folly.

  580. Chapter 5

  581. had advice

  582. for those of us

  583. who are married,

  584. right?

  585. But what about

  586. those of us

  587. who are single?

  588. By the way,

  589. don't forget

  590. that the only

  591. perfect human being

  592. the world has ever seen,

  593. the Lord Jesus,

  594. was single,

  595. right?

  596. And the greatest

  597. missionary and theologian

  598. of the church,

  599. the Apostle Paul,

  600. was also single.

  601. Singleness

  602. isn't a problem

  603. to overcome.

  604. It's a calling

  605. to live into.

  606. But look again

  607. at chapter 7.

  608. Pick up in verse 1.

  609. We skipped these verses

  610. earlier.

  611. My son,

  612. keep my words,

  613. treasure up my commandments

  614. with you.

  615. Chapter 7,

  616. verse 2.

  617. Keep my commandments

  618. and live.

  619. Keep my teaching

  620. as the apple

  621. of your eye.

  622. That's your pupil.

  623. Guard it.

  624. Protect it.

  625. Bind them on your fingers.

  626. Write them on the tablet

  627. of your heart.

  628. Say to wisdom,

  629. you are my sister.

  630. And call insight

  631. your intimate friend

  632. to keep you

  633. from the forbidden woman

  634. and the adulteress

  635. with her smooth words.

  636. Did you notice here?

  637. It's not the wife

  638. of your youth

  639. in this passage

  640. that will keep you

  641. on the path

  642. of sexual wisdom

  643. that satisfies.

  644. What is it?

  645. Verse 4.

  646. It's wisdom itself.

  647. Say to wisdom,

  648. you are my sister.

  649. And call insight

  650. your intimate friend.

  651. Now you need to understand

  652. that my sister

  653. was a term of endearment

  654. in the ancient world.

  655. Sounds a little weird

  656. to us

  657. to call your spouse

  658. my sister.

  659. But you know,

  660. terms of endearment

  661. are always a little weird

  662. and awkward.

  663. An intimate friend.

  664. Call insight

  665. your intimate friend.

  666. That's also a rich

  667. relational phrase,

  668. isn't it?

  669. So what is Proverbs

  670. saying here?

  671. It's saying that

  672. refraining from sex

  673. outside of marriage

  674. is possible

  675. because in wisdom

  676. itself

  677. we have an intimate friend,

  678. a lover even,

  679. who we can call to,

  680. who we can cherish,

  681. who we can rest

  682. and find our souls

  683. to light in.

  684. And you know,

  685. friends,

  686. when the curtain rises

  687. in the New Testament

  688. and we see that wisdom,

  689. this Old Testament figure

  690. of such grace

  691. and beauty

  692. and power,

  693. we see when the curtain

  694. rises in the New Testament,

  695. who is wisdom?

  696. Wisdom's fulfilled

  697. in none other than

  698. the Lord Jesus Himself.

  699. So when you walk

  700. with Him daily,

  701. communing with Him

  702. by His Spirit

  703. in the Word

  704. and prayer

  705. and worship

  706. and in fellowship,

  707. you're communing

  708. with the most faithful

  709. of spouses,

  710. with the most intimate

  711. of friends,

  712. with wisdom incarnate.

  713. You see, friends,

  714. every human marriage

  715. is just a shadow

  716. of what we have in Him.

  717. It's not,

  718. marriage isn't something

  719. we're supposed to look to

  720. in order to satisfy.

  721. It's something we're supposed

  722. to look through

  723. to the real marriage,

  724. our union with Christ.

  725. Every marriage

  726. is just a shadow

  727. of what we have in Him

  728. and what we ultimately

  729. will have

  730. in endless delight

  731. with Him

  732. when He returns.

  733. So for those of us

  734. who are single,

  735. stoke that desire

  736. for Christ.

  737. Do anything you can

  738. to fan the flame

  739. of your love

  740. for Christ.

  741. Delight in wisdom.

  742. Delight in your Lord Jesus

  743. and that will fill your heart

  744. with a joy

  745. and with a gladness

  746. and with a resilience

  747. that will keep you

  748. far from the path

  749. of folly.

  750. Last thing,

  751. when we see

  752. what sex means

  753. in its full biblical scope,

  754. we see and we know

  755. that in Christ

  756. there's full forgiveness

  757. for all your sexual folly.

  758. Friends,

  759. some of you are carrying

  760. a load of shame

  761. and guilt this morning

  762. because you were like

  763. that young fool

  764. in chapter 7.

  765. You put yourself

  766. in the wrong place

  767. at the wrong time

  768. and whether on the internet

  769. or in person

  770. with someone

  771. who wasn't your spouse,

  772. you willingly went

  773. looking for sexual pleasure

  774. outside of God's good design.

  775. But friends,

  776. brothers,

  777. sisters,

  778. as you see yourself

  779. in that story

  780. in Proverbs 7,

  781. let me call your mind

  782. to another story

  783. about a young man

  784. who took his father's inheritance

  785. and went into the far country

  786. and spent all that he had

  787. on prostitutes

  788. and reckless living.

  789. Do you remember

  790. that story?

  791. Do you remember

  792. what that young man did

  793. when he was finding himself

  794. feeding pigs,

  795. poor,

  796. alone,

  797. and ashamed?

  798. Loaded with guilt

  799. and regret

  800. when the price

  801. of his sexual folly

  802. had cost him everything?

  803. He came to himself

  804. and he remembered

  805. his father

  806. and he went home.

  807. And what did he find

  808. when he went home?

  809. Rejection?

  810. No.

  811. He found the father's embrace.

  812. The best robe

  813. was wrapped around him.

  814. The ring was put on his hand.

  815. The shoes were put on his feet.

  816. And the fattened calf,

  817. the feast,

  818. was prepared

  819. to celebrate his return.

  820. And friends,

  821. that can be your story

  822. this morning.

  823. It is your story

  824. if you're in Christ.

  825. Because of what Jesus has done,

  826. there's forgiveness

  827. for all your sins,

  828. covering all of your shame.

  829. The father who warns you

  830. in his grace

  831. receives you home

  832. in his grace.

  833. And he receives you home

  834. not with reservations,

  835. but with rejoicing.

  836. So you see,

  837. today,

  838. right now,

  839. if you're carrying

  840. a burden

  841. of sexual folly,

  842. go to Christ

  843. in faith.

  844. Rest in his finished work

  845. and know that the father

  846. delights in you.

  847. There's forgiveness

  848. for it all,

  849. no matter how great it's been.

  850. Christ,

  851. Ephesians 5,

  852. will tell us,

  853. has washed

  854. his bride clean.

  855. That we are spotless

  856. in him

  857. without wrinkle

  858. or blemish.

  859. That we're radiant

  860. so that now

  861. we can delight

  862. in him again.

  863. And we can walk

  864. faithfully

  865. in the way of wisdom

  866. once more,

  867. staying far from sin

  868. and close to your Savior,

  869. delighting in him

  870. and finding in him

  871. the satisfaction

  872. for your soul.

  873. Let's pray.

  874. Lord Jesus,

  875. we ask that,

  876. I ask that you would

  877. come near to us

  878. by your Spirit.

  879. Lord,

  880. we've dealt with

  881. heavy topics this morning

  882. from your Word.

  883. Lord,

  884. I pray that we've dealt

  885. with these things

  886. accurately and faithfully.

  887. Lord,

  888. I pray for those

  889. who are here now

  890. who find themselves

  891. enmeshed,

  892. entrapped in sexual folly.

  893. Lord,

  894. would you give them

  895. by your Holy Spirit

  896. the courage

  897. and the grace

  898. to turn

  899. and to step back

  900. into the path

  901. that leads to you,

  902. Father.

  903. Jesus,

  904. would they see

  905. the utter completion

  906. of your grace

  907. on the cross for them

  908. and know that all their shame

  909. and all their guilt

  910. has been covered

  911. and they can come home.

  912. And Lord,

  913. I pray that you would

  914. give us courage

  915. and perseverance

  916. as a church family

  917. to help one another

  918. in this fight of faith,

  919. to stay far from the path

  920. of folly

  921. and to stay near you.

  922. Lord,

  923. help us

  924. to be those

  925. who ask one another

  926. loving,

  927. good,

  928. intrusive questions,

  929. who welcome

  930. the input

  931. of our brothers

  932. and sisters

  933. into our lives.

  934. Lord Jesus,

  935. you said that

  936. it's better to

  937. pluck out an eye

  938. and cut off a hand

  939. in order to enter

  940. the kingdom of heaven

  941. than to go down

  942. to the grave.

  943. So Lord,

  944. give us that kind

  945. of courage

  946. and that kind

  947. of perseverance

  948. and that kind

  949. of desire

  950. to want to enjoy

  951. the riches of you

  952. more than we want

  953. to enjoy the folly

  954. of this world.

  955. Holy Spirit,

  956. stoke that love

  957. in our hearts,

  958. we pray.

  959. Amen.

  960. Well,

  961. friends,

  962. it's fitting

  963. that we're

  964. celebrating

  965. the Lord's Supper

  966. this morning.

  967. The Lord's Supper

  968. is actually

  969. an act

  970. of covenant renewal.

  971. Here is Christ,

  972. our lover,

  973. offering himself

  974. to us again

  975. through this bread

  976. and through this cup.

  977. And he's inviting

  978. us into deeper

  979. union with him.

  980. Here we see

  981. in this bread

  982. that's broken,

  983. our lover's body

  984. broken for us.

  985. And here in this cup

  986. that we share,

  987. the blood of our

  988. heavenly spouse

  989. shed for us,

  990. paying down

  991. the debt

  992. of every single sin

  993. so that we can

  994. be with him forever.

  995. And we celebrate

  996. the Lord's Supper

  997. regularly,

  998. frequently,

  999. because we so

  1000. often forget

  1001. how faithful

  1002. and how good

  1003. and how thorough

  1004. is the love

  1005. of Jesus for us.

  1006. The Lord's Supper

  1007. is for believers.

  1008. It's for those

  1009. who've turned

  1010. from sin

  1011. and placed

  1012. their trust in Christ.

  1013. What does that mean?

  1014. It doesn't mean

  1015. that you've sort of

  1016. tried to clean up

  1017. your act

  1018. and start living

  1019. the right way.

  1020. It means that

  1021. you've stopped

  1022. depending on

  1023. your own efforts

  1024. to clean up

  1025. your act

1026. and live the right way.

  1027. And it means

  1028. you've thrown

  1029. yourself

  1030. in complete rest

  1031. and trust

  1032. and abandon

  1033. on the one

  1034. who has lived

  1035. perfectly

  1036. and on the one

  1037. who has done

  1038. it for you.

  1039. And you're resting

  1040. in him alone

  1041. for your acceptance

  1042. with God.

  1043. So friends,

  1044. if you're here

  1045. this morning

  1046. and that's true

  1047. of you,

  1048. then as the bread

  1049. comes around

  1050. and as the cup

  1051. comes around,

  1052. then take

  1053. and eat

  1054. and drink

  1055. in repentance

  1056. and in faith

  1057. and remember

  1058. the deep love

  1059. of Christ

  1060. for you.

  1061. And if you're here

  1062. this morning

  1063. and that's true

  1064. of you

  1065. and you haven't

  1066. been baptized,

  1067. then that's

  1068. your next step.

  1069. Go down

  1070. into the waters

  1071. of baptism

  1072. and publicly

  1073. proclaim all

  1074. that Christ

  1075. has done

  1076. for you.

  1077. If you want

  1078. to talk about

  1079. baptism,

  1080. you can come

  1081. talk to me

  1082. after the service.

  1083. I'd be happy

  1084. to do that.

  1085. If you're here

  1086. and you're not

  1087. a believer

  1088. in Jesus yet,

  1089. if you're still

  1090. exploring what

  1091. Christianity is

  1092. all about,

  1093. then just

  1094. pass the plates

  1095. by.

  1096. Don't take it.

  1097. Instead,

  1098. we would invite

  1099. you this morning

  1100. to put your

  1101. trust in Christ.

  1102. Instead of taking

  1103. these signs

  1104. and tokens

  1105. of what Jesus

  1106. has done,

  1107. take hold

  1108. of Him

  1109. by faith.

  1110. There are some

  1111. prayers in your

  1112. bulletin a couple

  1113. pages in that

  1114. are just meant

  1115. to help you

  1116. cry out to God

  1117. and ask Him

  1118. to open your eyes

  1119. or ask Him

  1120. to become

  1121. your Savior

  1122. and your Lord.

  1123. So,

  1124. those who are

  1125. coming and

  1126. helping to serve,

  1127. come up.

  1128. The way we do

  1129. this at Trinity,

  1130. if you're new,

  1131. we pass out the

  1132. bread and we eat

  1133. it together,

  1134. then we're going

  1135. to pray again

  1136. and we're going

  1137. to pass out the

  1138. cup and we're

  1139. going to drink

  1140. it together.

  1141. We'll sort of

  1142. do one at a

  1143. time and we'll

  1144. sing and worship

  1145. and pour out

  1146. our hearts

  1147. to God together.

  1148. Antoine,

  1149. would you pray

  1150. for the bread

  1151. for us?

  1152. Thanks,

  1153. brother.

  1154. Lord,

  1155. how great it

  1156. is that we

  1157. stand here

  1158. in remembrance

  1159. of you,

  1160. your body

  1161. broken for us,

  1162. yet very

  1163. sobering,

  1164. knowing that

  1165. all our sins

  1166. are covered.

  1167. that you

  1168. stand unashamed

  1169. of us,

  1170. you've molded

  1171. and created

  1172. us into your

  1173. likeness,

  1174. into your

  1175. image,

  1176. and may

  1177. through your

  1178. sacrifice,

  1179. we may know

  1180. your great love

  1181. and desire

  1182. for us,

  1183. to restore

  1184. us and to

  1185. make us into

  1186. the people

  1187. you've called

  1188. us to be.

  1189. So as we

  1190. partake in

  1191. this bread,

  1192. Lord,

  1193. may we

  1194. remember

  1195. all you've

  1196. done for us

  1197. and how

  1198. great and

  1199. how wide

  1200. your love

  1201. is.

  1202. In Christ's

  1203. name,

  1204. amen.

  1205. Amen.

  1206. I heard

  1207. the voice

  1208. of Jesus

  1209. say,

  1210. come on

  1211. to me

  1212. and rest.

  1213. Lay down,

  1214. thou weary

  1215. one,

  1216. lay down

  1217. thy head

  1218. upon my

  1219. breast.

  1220. I came

  1221. to Jesus

  1222. as I

  1223. was,

  1224. weary

  1225. and worn

  1226. and sad.

  1227. I found

  1228. in Him

  1229. a resting

  1230. place,

  1231. and He

  1232. has made

  1233. me glad.

  1234. I heard

  1235. the voice

  1236. of Jesus

  1237. say,

  1238. behold,

  1239. I freely

  1240. give

  1241. the living

  1242. water.

  1243. Thirsty

  1244. one,

  1245. stoop

  1246. down

  1247. and drink

  1248. and live.

  1249. I came

  1250. to Jesus

  1251. and I

  1252. drank

  1253. of that

  1254. life-giving

  1255. stream.

  1256. My thirst

  1257. was quenched,

  1258. my soul

  1259. revived,

  1260. and now

  1261. living

  1262. in.

  1263. I heard

  1264. the voice

  1265. of Jesus

  1266. say,

  1267. I am

  1268. this

  1269. dark

  1270. world's

  1271. light.

  1272. Look

  1273. unto

  1274. me,

  1275. thy

  1276. morn

  1277. shall

  1278. rise,

  1279. and all

  1280. thy day

  1281. be bright.

  1282. I

  1283. looked

  1284. to

  1285. Jesus

  1286. and I

  1287. found

  1288. in Him

  1289. my star,

  1290. my sun.

  1291. And

  1292. in that

  1293. light

  1294. of

  1295. life

  1296. I'll

  1297. walk

  1298. till

  1299. traveling

  1300. days

  1301. are

  1302. dark.

  1303. Thank you.
