  1. Good morning, church. It's good to see you all this morning. We are in Romans 8 this morning.

  2. That's page 944 in the Pew Bible. Let me ask you to turn there with me.

  3. We are going to focus on verses 9 through 11 today.

  4. But for our reading, I'm going to start in verse 1 so we get the context.

  5. As we come to God's Word together, let me pray for us.

  6. Amen.

  7. Our Father, as we have just sung, how great is your steadfast love toward us.

  8. Lord, you have taken our sin and you have separated it from us as far as the east is from the west.

  9. Lord, there is no remembrance of our sin because of what Christ has done for us.

  10. Lord, we confess this morning that we need your Spirit to come and make this truth real to our hearts.

  11. Lord, in our own selves, our hearts are so cold toward you.

  12. Our minds are so closed toward you and the things of you.

  13. So now, God, as we come to your life-giving Word, we pray that you would dwell richly among us by your Spirit

  14. and help us to behold wondrous things from your Word.

  15. Lord, we ask this in Jesus' name, Father.

  16. Amen.

  17. Well, let me read Romans 8, verses 1 through 11.

    Romans 8:1–11

  18. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  19. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

  20. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.

  21. By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh

  22. in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us,

  23. who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

  24. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh,

  25. but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

  26. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

  27. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law.

  28. Indeed, it cannot.

  29. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  30. You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.

  31. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him.

  32. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin,

  33. the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

  34. If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,

  35. He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies

  36. through His Spirit who dwells in you.

  37. When Beth and I were dating after college, we lived about two and a half hours away from each other.

  38. I was living in Pennsylvania where I had a job,

  39. and she was living and working back home in New Jersey with her parents.

  40. So what that meant was that every weekend, I would drive two and a half hours on Friday after work

  41. to stay in the spare bedroom at her parents' place just so we could spend Saturday and most of Sunday together,

  42. and then I would turn around and drive another two and a half hours back to Pennsylvania.

  43. Needless to say, that was not very fun.

  44. And keep in mind, this was in the stone age when Skype and FaceTime didn't exist,

  45. that when we talked to each other on the phone, we could literally only hear each other's voices.

  46. That was all we had.

  47. So when it became pretty clear to us and to the people whose godly wisdom we trusted

  48. that marriage was in our future, that that was the right path for us, we could not wait.

  49. We planned a six-month engagement, which is crazy short if you haven't gotten married before.

  50. We booked the church.

  51. We booked the ladies' club for the reception.

  52. We booked the caterers.

  53. We sent out the invitations.

  54. And if you've planned a wedding, you realize that that's an incredible amount of work.

  55. And at last, when our wedding day came, what happened?

  56. We took on a whole new status.

  57. Now, we were legally husband and wife.

  58. Everything was now redefined.

  59. Legally, what was mine was hers.

  60. What was hers was mine.

  61. You see, we had taken on a whole new status in getting married.

  62. But with that new legal status of husband and wife came something else.

  63. Beth packed up all of her stuff, brought it all the way from New Jersey to Pennsylvania,

  64. and we moved into our first apartment together.

  65. We actually started doing life together, taking up residence, dwelling in the same space.

  66. Then the real fun began.

  67. Now, imagine how strange it would have been after getting married, after entering into this whole new status,

  68. where we were now considered one in a binding legal union.

  69. What's true of her is true of me, and vice versa.

  70. Imagine if after all that, we wrapped up the reception, said goodbye to the guests, watched the caterers clean up and head home.

  71. Imagine if after all that, I then drove two and a half hours back to Pennsylvania,

  72. only to see her every once in a while when the weekend rolled around,

  73. and when we could get a chance to talk on our flip flones, and maybe write a letter or two.

  74. That would have been very strange, would it not?

  75. Now, I know some married couples have seasons where they have to live apart for various reasons,

  76. but apart from those circumstances, don't you see the change in status goes hand in hand with the change of dwelling.

  77. What's pronounced legally, that these two are now one, gets then lived out relationally.

  78. And they don't just live in the same space, but financially, emotionally, physically, socially,

  79. there's this increasing union.

  80. They really begin to dwell with one another.

  81. Now, what Paul is helping us to see in verses 9 through 11 of Romans 8,

  82. this great chapter about assurance, is that something very similar,

  83. but even more profound happens in a believer's relationship with God in Christ.

  84. You see, over and over again in Romans, Paul has been saying,

  85. through faith in Christ, you have a new status.

  86. As chapter 5 of Romans will say, you've moved from being in Adam,

  87. the old humanity, under the curse of sin and death,

  88. and now, through faith, you are in Christ.

  89. You are in the new humanity,

  90. where his gift of righteousness has brought life.

  91. Or, as Paul puts it right here in verse 1 of chapter 8,

  92. there's therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  93. Through faith, we're united to Christ, now what's his becomes ours.

  94. You see, if God's verdict over Christ is that there's no condemnation,

  95. then that means God's verdict over us.

  96. Though in and of ourselves, we don't deserve it.

  97. It's the same.

  98. There's no condemnation.

  99. But you see, that's not the end of the story.

  100. This new status comes hand in hand with a new presence.

  101. Three times in these three verses, 9 through 11,

  102. we're told that the Holy Spirit indwells the believer.

  103. That he comes and he takes up residence within.

  104. And the word indwell means a settled, permanent residence.

  105. The Holy Spirit's not just passing through,

  106. here one day, gone the next.

  107. The Holy Spirit's not like most of us when it comes to New Haven.

  108. We're here for a couple years,

  109. and we're on to something else, right?

  110. That's what I thought was going to happen to Beth and I.

  111. God had other plans.

  112. Maybe he's got other plans for you.

  113. But no, the Holy Spirit is here to stay.

  114. He's settling in.

  115. He's never going to leave.

  116. So this morning, I want us, with the Apostle Paul here in verses 9 through 11,

  117. to pause and to consider and to rejoice in the reality

  118. that if you are in Christ, then the Spirit of God dwells in you.

  119. And we're going to do that in three steps,

  120. just looking at each of these three verses in turn.

  121. And in verse 9, we're going to see the fact of the Spirit's indwelling,

  122. just the brute fact of it, the reality of it.

  123. And then in verse 10, we're going to see that there's present power

  124. in the Spirit's indwelling.

  125. And then in verse 11, we're going to see that there's future transformation

  126. because of the Spirit's indwelling.

  127. Clear?

  128. Let's do it.

  129. Okay, first, the fact.

  130. Verse 9.

  131. Look at verse 9 again.

  132. You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit,

  133. if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.

  134. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

  135. It is a truth universally acknowledged

  136. that a single man in possession of a good fortune

  137. must be in want of a wife.

  138. You recognize that line?

  139. It's the opening line of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

  140. Some people are shaking their heads.

  141. Am I the only geek here who's a Jane Austen fan?

  142. Okay.

  143. Jane Austen begins one of her greatest novels

  144. with just wit and irony and sarcasm,

  145. as only she can do.

  146. Here's a universal truth.

  147. That a man possessing good fortune must be in want of a wife.

  148. But here, you see, Paul is laying down a universal truth.

  149. He is laying down a reality with no irony,

  150. no sarcasm,

  151. just full-on joyful truth.

  152. That the Spirit of God indwells everyone who belongs to Christ,

  153. and conversely, no one who does not belong to him.

  154. Look at verse 9 again.

  155. Let me try to unpack Paul's tightly packed reasoning in this verse.

  156. I think it goes something like this.

  157. How can Paul be so sure that the Roman Christians,

  158. the you in verse 9,

  159. are no longer in the flesh?

  160. That is that they're no longer in the realm

  161. or under the sway

  162. of that old self-centered nature

  163. that we inherit from Adam.

  164. That's what the flesh means here in Romans

  165. and in pretty much all of Paul's language.

  166. It's our old self-centered fallen nature.

  167. How can Paul be so sure

  168. that they're no longer in that realm,

  169. but in the realm of the Spirit?

  170. That is in the realm of the Spirit's liberating reign and presence.

  171. How can he be so sure

  172. that that transfer has been made of them?

  173. Well, because the Spirit of God dwells in them.

  174. You see, the words, if in fact, there,

  175. don't so much cast doubt on whether the Spirit dwells in them.

  176. Rather, Paul is showing the deep logical connection

  177. between being in the Spirit

  178. and having the Spirit in you.

  179. But how can Paul be so sure

  180. that the Spirit of the living God dwells in them?

  181. It's quite a claim.

  182. Well, because as the rest of verse 9 says,

  183. if anyone doesn't have the Spirit of Christ dwelling in them,

  184. they don't belong to Christ at all.

  185. So the question for Paul is,

  186. do you belong to Christ?

  187. Are you His through faith?

  188. If yes,

  189. then there's no doubt in Paul's mind

  190. that the Holy Spirit dwells in you.

  191. And if the Spirit dwells in you,

  192. then you're no longer in the flesh,

  193. but you're in the Spirit.

  194. That is Paul's reasoning.

  195. And you see what the central plank of it all is.

  196. It's the reality, the truth,

  197. that the Spirit of God indwells everyone

  198. who belongs to Christ through faith.

  199. Okay, now why is that such a big deal?

  200. Well, in the next two verses,

  201. we're going to see two implications

  202. of the Spirit's dwelling in us.

  203. But I want us to just pause for a second

  204. on the stunning fact of what Paul is saying.

  205. That if you are in Christ,

  206. then the Spirit of God dwells in you.

  207. The Spirit of God dwells in you.

  208. If you've been a Christian for a while,

  209. maybe that's become a very familiar thing to you.

  210. You were told, rightly,

  211. that when you put your trust in Christ,

  212. the Holy Spirit came to dwell within.

  213. But do you realize, friend, what that means?

  214. Stop and consider who we are talking about here.

  215. The Holy Spirit of God.

  216. The one who hovered over the waters of creation,

  217. bringing life to what God the Father made through the Son.

  218. The Holy Spirit.

  219. The Holy Spirit who descended in glory

  220. upon the tabernacle and the temple in the Old Testament

  221. with a glory so devastatingly holy

  222. that everyone had to bow down

  223. and no one could stand up

  224. because he was there.

  225. The Holy Spirit who came like a whirlwind

  226. and fire at Pentecost

  227. and that launched the church into a mission

  228. that erupted and ripped through the first century

  229. with an energy and a life that is yet to cease

  230. even to this day.

  231. The Holy Spirit who created worlds,

  232. who brought men and women to their knees,

  233. who conquered empires with the word of the cross,

  234. the same Holy Spirit,

  235. the Lord,

  236. the giver of life,

  237. who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

  238. who with the Father and the Son

  239. is worshipped and glorified,

  240. as the Nicene Queen says.

  241. This Holy Spirit dwells in you.

  242. I think we need to just pause for a second

  243. and take that in.

  244. In you, Christian.

  245. And so you realize that according to Paul

  246. and to the rest of the New Testament,

  247. there's no sort of two-tiered Christianity.

  248. There's no sort of group of super-Christians over here

  249. who are indwelt by the Spirit

  250. and they've really got it going on.

  251. And then there's all the schmucks over here,

  252. the rest of us,

  253. who aren't indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

  254. We're just getting by by the skin of our teeth.

  255. No, Paul is saying,

  256. if you belong to Christ,

  257. the Spirit of the living God

  258. has taken up settled,

  259. permanent residence within

  260. every single one of you.

  261. Friends, does that not change

  262. how you see yourself?

  263. More importantly,

  264. does that not change

  265. how you see God

  266. and His great grace

  267. and His great purpose?

  268. Now, I realize some of you here

  269. are not Christians.

  270. Maybe you're interested in spiritual things.

  271. Maybe you're not so sure

  272. about this Christianity thing just yet.

  273. Let me say to you

  274. that you're very welcome here.

  275. We want this to be a place

  276. where you can explore

  277. and hear what Christianity is all about

  278. and ask good questions

  279. and see whether or not

  280. Jesus is who He says He is.

  281. And I imagine that for you,

  282. all this talk about the indwelling Holy Spirit

  283. probably either seems very curious to you

  284. and maybe you want to know more,

  285. or else, maybe more likely,

  286. this just seems totally absurd.

  287. How could anyone believe such a thing?

  288. But you know, if you think about it,

  289. is it all that absurd?

  290. If there is a God who made us

  291. and who loves us,

  292. and if that God in love

  293. took our humanity upon Himself,

  294. and if He bore our worst,

  295. if He bore our failure

  296. and our selfishness and our sin

  297. so that you and I could be released from it,

  298. is it so hard to believe

  299. that that God who made us,

  300. who loves us,

  301. is it so hard to believe

  302. that that God would also want to be near to us?

  303. to be with us,

  304. to not just be a God above us

  305. or over us

  306. or even a God among us,

  307. but to be the God within us,

  308. closer to us

  309. than we are to ourselves.

  310. Maybe it's not so strange.

  311. Maybe it's exactly

  312. what we've all been longing for.

  313. So that's our first point.

  314. Just the fact

  315. of the Spirit's indwelling.

  316. But what's the implication of all this?

  317. If the Holy Spirit dwells in us,

  318. what does that mean?

  319. So in the next two verses,

  320. Paul will show us,

  321. and if we could sum it up

  322. with one word,

  323. that one word would be

  324. life.

  325. Life.

  326. In verse 10,

  327. we see that the indwelling Spirit

  328. is life.

  329. And in verse 11,

  330. we see that the indwelling Spirit

  331. will give life.

  332. In verse 10,

  333. this life means present power.

  334. And in verse 11,

  335. this life means future transformation.

  336. Let's look at the present power.

  337. Verse 10,

  338. but if Christ is in you,

  339. notice by the way,

  340. before we go,

  341. here's an aside.

  342. Notice by the way

  343. how differently Paul describes

  344. the Holy Spirit here.

  345. The Spirit,

  346. the Spirit of God,

  347. the Spirit of Christ.

  348. Here he just says,

  349. if Christ is in you,

  350. what's Paul doing?

  351. Is he sort of getting

  352. all of his categories confused?

  353. Is for Paul the Spirit in Christ

  354. just sort of one person?

  355. No.

  356. What Paul is saying

  357. that the Spirit of God

  358. and the Son of God

  359. and the Father,

  360. though they are very distinct persons

  361. in one God,

  362. their actions can never be separated.

  363. That Jesus,

  364. from the Father,

  365. sends the Spirit

  366. and the Spirit mediates

  367. the presence of Jesus

  368. into our hearts.

  369. This is the same thing

  370. Jesus taught

  371. in the chapter from John

  372. that we read earlier

  373. in the service,

  374. that he was going to send

  375. a helper,

  376. the Holy Spirit,

  377. and he would dwell in you.

  378. And then Jesus is going to say,

  379. oh,

  380. and my Father

  381. and I will come

  382. and we'll make our home in you.

  383. You can see how reading passages

  384. like Romans 8,

  385. like John 14,

  386. how the early church

  387. in faithful interpretation

  388. of Scripture

  389. would speak of God

  390. as triune,

  391. one God,

  392. eternally existing

  393. as three persons.

  394. But that's not Paul's

  395. main point here.

  396. He's talking about

  397. the present power

  398. of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

  399. Back to verse 10.

  400. If Christ is in you,

  401. although the body is dead

  402. because of sin,

  403. the Spirit is life

  404. because of righteousness.

  405. Now, friends,

  406. Paul in the rest

  407. of the New Testament

  408. is quite clear.

  409. Being a Christian

  410. does not exempt you

  411. from physical death.

  412. The body,

  413. as Paul says here,

  414. is still subject to death

  415. because of sin,

  416. because we still inhabit

  417. this fallen world.

  418. But that is not

  419. the whole story

  420. for the Christian.

  421. Even though our outward bodies

  422. waste away,

  423. even though we get sick,

  424. even though we wrestle

  425. with mental illness

  426. and physical illness,

  427. even though we struggle

  428. with aging and dementia,

  429. even though,

  430. unless the Lord returns,

  431. each one of us

  432. in this room

  433. will physically die.

  434. Despite of all that,

  435. Paul says there's another

  436. principle at work

  437. within us.

  438. The Spirit is life

  439. because of righteousness.

  440. Oh, we could have spent

  441. the whole morning

  442. on just that one phrase.

  443. I was actually tempted

  444. to just preach

  445. a whole sermon

  446. on the Spirit is life

  447. because of righteousness.

  448. The Spirit is life

  449. because of righteousness.

  450. First,

  451. whose righteousness?

  452. Yours?

  453. Has the Spirit come

  454. and given you life

  455. because of your moral goodness?

  456. Because of your worthiness?

  457. Because of your record?

  458. No.

  459. God takes up residence

  460. in you

  461. because of His righteousness.

  462. This is the message

  463. of the entire book

  464. of Romans.

  465. In our high school

  466. Sunday school class

  467. this morning,

  468. we tried to spend

  469. most of our time

  470. thinking about this idea

  471. of God's righteousness.

  472. That God's righteousness

  473. has come to us

  474. the guilty

  475. as a gift

  476. through Jesus Christ,

  477. the righteous one.

  478. And this makes Christianity

  479. totally different

  480. than anything else.

  481. Every other religion,

  482. friends,

  483. is about offering

  484. a righteousness

  485. to God

  486. in hopes

  487. that He'll love

  488. and accept us.

  489. but Christianity

  490. is about receiving

  491. a righteousness

  492. from God

  493. with the assurance

  494. that nothing then

  495. can separate us

  496. from His love

  497. and acceptance.

  498. And because of that

  499. righteous status,

  500. the righteous

  501. given to us

  502. through Jesus'

  503. faithful life

  504. and sin-bearing death,

  505. because of that,

  506. there is nothing

  507. keeping the Holy Spirit

  508. from coming

  509. and taking up

  510. residence within

  511. and bringing

  512. a new power of life

  513. where once there was

  514. sin and death.

  515. The power of sin

  516. has been broken

  517. through the righteousness

  518. of Christ

  519. and now the Spirit

  520. comes flooding in

  521. with unstoppable life.

  522. Now what does that

  523. present power

  524. look like?

  525. Well, Paul has actually

  526. been telling us

  527. and he'll go on

  528. to tell us

  529. right here

  530. in Romans 8.

  531. Let's paint a picture.

  532. The present life

  533. of the Spirit

  534. means a new mindset,

  535. verse 5.

  536. If you live

  537. according to the Spirit,

  538. you set your mind

  539. on the things

  540. of the Spirit.

  541. It's a whole new

  542. desire

  543. or controlling

  544. passion

  545. for your life.

  546. You're no longer

  547. bound

  548. to just think

  549. about yourself

  550. and how you can

  551. exalt yourself

  552. and how you can

  553. win others' favor

  554. for yourself,

  555. but you're bound

  556. and you're captivated

  557. and you're drawn out

  558. into loving Christ

  559. and delighting

  560. and exalting

  561. in Him.

  562. You have a whole

  563. new mindset.

  564. The power

  565. of the Spirit

  566. also means

  567. a new

  568. submission

  569. to God

  570. and God's

  571. word.

  572. That's verse 7.

  573. Paul says there,

  574. if you're in the flesh,

  575. you don't submit

  576. to God,

  577. you're hostile

  578. to God,

  579. you don't submit

  580. to His word.

  581. The implication

  582. is that the

  583. opposite is true.

  584. If you're in the Spirit,

  585. if the Spirit

  586. dwells in you,

  587. then

  588. out of our

  589. new desires

  590. come a new

  591. obedience.

  592. You see,

  593. the Spirit

  594. comes and He

  595. changes not just

  596. our inner desires,

  597. but also our habits,

  598. also the way we live,

  599. also the shape

  600. of our life.

  601. Of course,

  602. we will always

  603. wrestle with

  604. temptation and sin

  605. in this life,

  606. but what Paul

  607. is saying here

  608. is that more

  609. and more

  610. sin

  611. loses its

  612. control over us.

  613. More and more

  614. we delight

  615. in God's ways

  616. now

  617. and new habits

  618. begin to form.

  619. This new life

  620. also means

  621. a new witness

  622. within

  623. that we are

  624. children of God.

  625. This is jumping

  626. ahead to verse 16.

  627. Friends,

  628. I don't know

  629. about you,

  630. but I think

  631. most of us

  632. struggle

  633. with an old

  634. voice

  635. in our heads,

  636. a voice

  637. of condemnation,

  638. of shame,

  639. of guilt.

  640. An old voice

  641. that stretches

  642. the whole way

  643. back

  644. to the garden

  645. that comes

  646. and tells us

  647. that we need

  648. to work harder

  649. and prove ourselves

  650. that God

  651. doesn't really

  652. love us

  653. and have our best,

  654. so we need

  655. to do it

  656. on our own

  657. to fit in.

  658. But you see,

  659. now,

  660. because of the

  661. indwelling Holy Spirit,

  662. because the Spirit

  663. is life,

  664. because of righteousness,

  665. that old voice

  666. is met

  667. by another voice,

  668. the voice

  669. of the Spirit

  670. witnessing to our

  671. spirit

  672. that we are

  673. God's children,

  674. heirs of eternity,

  675. awash in dignity

  676. and glory

  677. that's nothing

  678. like this world

  679. or the favor

  680. of the world

  681. can give.

  682. Last,

  683. this new life

  684. in the Spirit

  685. means that there's

  686. a new groaning

  687. within us,

  688. a new groaning

  689. for the new creation

  690. and the Spirit's help

  691. for us

  692. as we pray.

  693. That's verse 23

  694. and verse 26

  695. and 27.

  696. This life

  697. that's in us

  698. because of Christ's

  699. righteousness

  700. through the Spirit

  701. means that there's

  702. an inner longing

  703. for God's future.

  704. There's an inner groaning

  705. to see creation healed

  706. and for his justice

  707. to come

  708. and make things right.

  709. And when we don't

  710. even know how to pray

  711. for that,

  712. Paul says,

  713. the Spirit prays

  714. for us.

  715. And though we might

  716. not be able to hear

  717. those prayers

  718. on our behalf,

  719. we can be sure

  720. that with them come

  721. peace

  722. and joy

  723. and a renewed sense

  724. of the love of God.

  725. So,

  726. brothers and sisters,

  727. Christian,

  728. the Spirit

  729. is life in you.

  730. Next week,

  731. we'll go deeper

  732. into what that looks like

  733. for us

  734. to be active

  735. in that life-giving power

  736. in the present,

  737. what it means

  738. to put sin to death,

  739. to live by the Spirit.

  740. We'll talk about

  741. some of our responsibility

  742. and all of that

  743. next week,

  744. but this morning,

  745. I wonder

  746. if we just need

  747. to hear a word

  748. of comfort

  749. and encouragement.

  750. Perhaps you're discouraged

  751. and disappointed

  752. in your own lack

  753. of holiness.

  754. Perhaps you're feeling stuck.

  755. How can I ever

  756. overcome

  757. this area

  758. of sin

  759. in my life?

  760. How can I ever

  761. change?

  762. How can I ever

  763. meet the challenge

  764. that lies before me now

  765. as a follower of Christ?

  766. Well,

  767. friend,

  768. the short answer is,

  769. in yourself,

  770. you can't.

  771. But,

  772. the Holy Spirit

  773. dwells within you.

  774. So,

  775. you don't have

  776. to remain

  777. stuck.

  778. You don't have

  779. to remain

  780. in that relationship

  781. that you know

  782. isn't pleasing

  783. to Christ.

  784. The Holy Spirit

  785. dwells in you.

  786. He will give you

  787. the courage

  788. to end things

  789. if you need to end things,

  790. to walk away,

  791. to ask for help.

  792. You don't have

  793. to go back

  794. to that sinful habit.

  795. The Holy Spirit

  796. dwells in you

  797. in that habit,

  798. that behavior.

  799. It's not you anymore.

  800. It doesn't define

  801. you anymore.

  802. It doesn't have

  803. dominion over you anymore.

  804. You belong

  805. to the Spirit

  806. and He dwells in you.

  807. And if you've been

  808. too afraid

  809. to ask for help,

  810. too embarrassed

  811. or ashamed,

  812. listen to what

  813. the Holy Spirit

  814. says to your spirit.

  815. You

  816. are a child

  817. of God.

  818. And there's

  819. no place

  820. for shame here.

  821. We're all sinners

  822. and we all

  823. stand

  824. on the righteousness

  825. of another,

  826. the righteousness

  827. of our faithful

  828. Savior,

  829. Jesus Christ,

  830. and He has made

  831. us all

  832. sons and daughters.

  833. So there's

  834. no more shame.

  835. There's no more fear.

  836. And that old

  837. way of living,

  838. it's not

  839. your future.

  840. There's present

  841. power

  842. through the

  843. indwelling

  844. Spirit.

  845. But last,

  846. this is our

  847. third big point,

  848. the fact,

  849. the present

  850. power,

  851. power.

  852. But Paul goes

  853. on to say

  854. there's future

  855. transformation.

  856. Verse 11,

  857. if the Spirit

  858. of Him

  859. who raised

  860. Jesus from

  861. the dead

  862. dwells in

  863. you,

  864. He who raised

  865. Christ Jesus

  866. from the dead

  867. will also

  868. give life

  869. to your

  870. mortal bodies

  871. through His

  872. Spirit

  873. who dwells

  874. in you.

  875. Where

  876. is all

  877. of this

  878. heading?

  879. Not just

  880. our service

  881. this morning,

  882. which you're

  883. thinking,

  884. well,

  885. I hope it's

  886. heading to

  887. coffee downstairs

  888. or something

  889. cold to

  890. drink because

  891. it's hot

  892. in here.

  893. Where is

  894. all this

  895. heading?

  896. Not just

  897. your week

  898. at work.

  899. Is it

  900. heading to

  901. a promotion?

  902. Is it

  903. heading to

  904. a vacation?

  905. Where is

  906. all of

  907. this

  908. heading?

  909. Your life.

  910. What's

  911. the destination

  912. that God

  913. has in store

  914. for those

  915. who belong

  916. to His

  917. Son and

  918. are indwelt

  919. by His

  920. Spirit?

  921. Paul says

  922. if you

  923. want to

  924. see your

  925. future,

  926. then look

  927. to Christ

  928. Jesus.

  929. If you

  930. want to

  931. see where

  932. God is

  933. taking you,

  934. then look

  935. to your

  936. King.

  937. Look to

  938. your King

  939. who entered

  940. into such

  941. deep

  942. solidarity

  943. with us,

  944. who took

  945. hold of us

  946. so firmly

  947. and so

  948. completely

  949. in the

  950. incarnation

  951. that now

  952. what's

  953. true of

  954. Him

  955. will be

  956. true of

  957. us.

  958. That's

  959. part of

  960. what it

  961. means that

  962. Jesus is

  963. the Christ,

  964. is the

  965. Messiah.

  966. In the

  967. Old Testament,

  968. the Messiah

  969. stood for

  970. His people.

  971. What was

  972. true of

  973. the King

  974. was true

  975. of the

  976. people.

  977. If the

  978. King

  979. obeyed,

  980. the people

  981. got blessed.

  982. If the

  983. King

  984. disobeyed,

  985. everything

  986. went downhill.

  987. But now

  988. Christ,

  989. our perfect

  990. King,

  991. has come.

  992. He's

  993. taken hold

  994. of us

  995. as people

  996. so that

  997. what's

  998. true of

  999. Him is

  1000. true of

  1001. us and

  1002. He's

  1003. taking us

  1004. there.

  1005. And friends,

  1006. what do we

  1007. know is

  1008. true of

  1009. Jesus?

  1010. It's that

  1011. God the

  1012. Father

  1013. raised Him

  1014. from the

  1015. dead

  1016. through the

  1017. power of

  1018. the Holy

  1019. Spirit.

  1020. And Paul

  1021. says if

  1022. that same

  1023. Spirit

  1024. dwells in

  1025. you and

  1026. He does

  1027. on the

  1028. last day

  1029. when the

  1030. trumpet

  1031. sounds and

  1032. Christ returns

  1033. to judge the

  1034. world and

  1035. make all

  1036. things new,

  1037. you too

  1038. will be

  1039. raised to

  1040. unceasing,

  1041. transformed,

  1042. physical,

  1043. material,

  1044. unending

  1045. life.

  1046. And

  1047. nothing

  1048. is going

  1049. to stop

  1050. it.

  1051. now there

  1052. are many

  1053. saints in

  1054. this room,

  1055. many

  1056. believers in

  1057. this room

  1058. who have

  1059. run the

  1060. race

  1061. faithfully

  1062. for many

  1063. years.

  1064. And

  1065. brothers and

  1066. sisters,

  1067. you know

  1068. better than

  1069. many of

  1070. us what

  1071. it means

  1072. to have,

  1073. as Paul

  1074. says,

  1075. a mortal

  1076. body,

  1077. a body

  1078. that grows

  1079. old and

  1080. weary,

  1081. weary.

  1082. But know

  1083. this,

  1084. saints,

  1085. one day

  1086. the Holy

  1087. Spirit in

  1088. you,

  1089. who has

  1090. continued to

  1091. give your

  1092. spirit new

  1093. life and

  1094. vitality through

  1095. all of life's

  1096. trials and

  1097. temptations,

  1098. that spirit

  1099. who has

  1100. empowered you

  1101. to live for

  1102. Christ day

  1103. in and day

  1104. out will

  1105. one day

  1106. make your

  1107. body

  1108. new,

  1109. just like

  1110. Christ,

  1111. your Savior.

  1112. You will

  1113. be raised

  1114. anew on

  1115. the last

  1116. day,

  1117. you will

  1118. run and

  1119. not grow

  1120. weary,

  1121. you will

  1122. walk and

  1123. not faint.

  1124. All the

  1125. effects of

  1126. sin on

  1127. the fall

  1128. of your

  1129. body

  1130. will be

  1131. undone

  1132. and God

  1133. will get

  1134. the glory

  1135. for conquering

  1136. all the

  1137. effects of

  1138. sin,

  1139. even

  1140. undoing

  1141. death

  1142. itself.

  1143. But if

  1144. you're here

  1145. this morning

  1146. and your

  1147. race is

  1148. just

  1149. beginning,

  1150. if your

  1151. body is

  1152. still pretty

  1153. healthy,

  1154. if you

  1155. seem to

  1156. be doing

  1157. okay,

  1158. if you're

  1159. in your

  1160. 20s,

  1161. you can

  1162. pull

  1163. all-nighters,

  1164. do all

  1165. that good

  1166. stuff that

  1167. people in

  1168. their 30s

  1169. and 40s

  1170. shouldn't do

  1171. anymore,

  1172. well friends,

  1173. you need to

  1174. hear this

  1175. too.

  1176. You need

  1177. to see what

  1178. sort of

  1179. future God

  1180. has in

  1181. store for

  1182. you.

  1183. You need

  1184. to see

  1185. that the

  1186. indwelling

  1187. of the

  1188. Spirit

  1189. means

  1190. that what

  1191. lies ahead

  1192. of you

  1193. in Christ

  1194. is not

  1195. something

  1196. less

  1197. physical,

  1198. less

  1199. joyful,

  1200. less

  1201. thrilling,

  1202. but more.

  1203. What's

  1204. ahead of

  1205. you

  1206. in

  1207. Christ

  1208. is

  1209. life.

  1210. So when

  1211. you are

  1212. tempted

  1213. to trade

  1214. Christ

  1215. for the

  1216. pleasures

  1217. of this

  1218. world

  1219. now,

  1220. when you

  1221. are faced

  1222. with that

  1223. bargain,

  1224. remember

  1225. where the

  1226. Spirit

  1227. of God

  1228. is taking

  1229. you.

  1230. Remember

  1231. that this

  1232. life isn't

  1233. your only

  1234. shot at

  1235. joy,

  1236. that this

  1237. life isn't

  1238. the terminus

  1239. of all

  1240. your desires,

  1241. that the

  1242. days of

  1243. your youth

  1244. aren't the

  1245. only chance

  1246. that you

  1247. get to

  1248. enjoy

  1249. life and

  1250. have

  1251. pleasure.

  1252. you see,

  1253. the Spirit's

  1254. indwelling

  1255. presence means

  1256. that you

  1257. are destined

  1258. for the

  1259. new heavens

  1260. and the

  1261. new earth

  1262. and the

  1263. resurrection

  1264. of the

  1265. body where

  1266. the present

  1267. joys of

  1268. this present

  1269. age will

  1270. be seen

  1271. as just

  1272. the foretaste

  1273. that they

  1274. are.

  1275. It's almost

  1276. impossible for

  1277. us to

  1278. imagine

  1279. what it

  1280. will be

  1281. like to

  1282. live in

  1283. a renewed

  1284. creation

  1285. that's been

  1286. liberated from

  1287. sin and

  1288. death,

  1289. that's been

  1290. liberated from

  1291. evil and

  1292. injustice,

  1293. that's been

  1294. liberated from

  1295. shame and

  1296. guilt.

  1297. It's almost

  1298. impossible for

  1299. us to

  1300. imagine how

  1301. rich it

  1302. will be to

  1303. drink the

  1304. joys that

  1305. God, our

  1306. Creator,

  1307. intended us

  1308. to drink

  1309. and to

  1310. drink in

  1311. these, in

  1312. our bodies.

  1313. After all, God

  1314. created us in

  1315. a body, didn't

  1316. He not?

  1317. He redeemed us

  1318. through a body,

  1319. the body of

  1320. Christ that's

  1321. been resurrected

  1322. and His future

  1323. for us will be

  1324. in the body

  1325. made totally

  1326. new.

  1327. joy.

  1328. And it

  1329. means all

  1330. the things

  1331. that you

  1332. want to

  1333. enjoy and

  1334. experience in

  1335. this body.

  1336. The rightful

  1337. enjoyment of

  1338. those things

  1339. will not be

  1340. withheld from

  1341. you in

  1342. God's future.

  1343. Following

  1344. Christ,

  1345. friends,

  1346. doesn't mean

  1347. less joy,

  1348. but more,

  1349. infinitely more,

  1350. and He's

  1351. put His

  1352. Spirit in

  1353. you to

  1354. make sure

  1355. that He

  1356. gets you

  1357. there.

  1358. So,

  1359. friends,

  1360. if you

  1361. belong to

  1362. Christ,

  1363. if you

  1364. belong to

  1365. Him through

  1366. faith and

  1367. the Spirit

  1368. of God,

  1369. the very

  1370. Spirit of

  1371. the living

  1372. God dwells

  1373. in you,

  1374. and that

  1375. means life,

  1376. life now

  1377. and life

  1378. to come.

  1379. So,

  1380. let me wrap

  1381. up by

  1382. asking,

  1383. do you

  1384. have that

  1385. life?

  1386. Do you

  1387. want it?

  1388. In your

  1389. more sober

  1390. moments,

  1391. do you see

  1392. how lifeless

  1393. your life

  1394. has been?

  1395. then,

  1396. friends,

  1397. hear the

  1398. call of

  1399. the gospel

  1400. that Jesus

  1401. says,

  1402. I've come

  1403. that you

  1404. might have

  1405. life and

  1406. have it

  1407. to the

  1408. full.

  1409. Jesus

  1410. says,

  1411. everyone who

  1412. comes to

  1413. me,

  1414. out of your

  1415. heart will

  1416. flow a

  1417. river of

  1418. living water

  1419. by which He

  1420. meant the

  1421. Spirit who

  1422. dwells within.

  1423. a life

  1424. that will

  1425. start to

  1426. overflow

  1427. its bounds

  1428. of our

  1429. old way

  1430. of being

  1431. until in

  1432. the future

  1433. to come

  1434. it will

  1435. overflow

  1436. and transform

  1437. even our

  1438. very physicality.

  1439. Friend,

  1440. you want

  1441. that life,

  1442. and if you

  1443. want that

  1444. life,

  1445. then you

  1446. must come

  1447. to Christ,

  1448. the life

  1449. giver,

  1450. the one

  1451. who died

  1452. and rose

  1453. again for

  1454. you so

  1455. you could

  1456. be right

  1457. with God

  1458. and so

  1459. you could

  1460. receive His

  1461. indwelling

  1462. Spirit and

  1463. have that

  1464. life.

  1465. Life now

  1466. and life

  1467. to come.

  1468. Let's

  1469. pray.

  1470. Father,

  1471. we pray

  1472. that you

  1473. would help

  1474. us to

  1475. grasp more

  1476. deeply the

  1477. reality of

  1478. the indwelling

  1479. Spirit within.

  1480. And,

  1481. Father,

  1482. as we've

  1483. meditated this

  1484. morning on

  1485. some of the

  1486. truths that

  1487. this brings,

  1488. things,

  1489. Lord,

  1490. I pray that

  1491. you would

  1492. help us

  1493. to see that

  1494. begin to

  1495. shape our

  1496. lives,

  1497. shape how

  1498. we think,

  1499. shape how

  1500. we act,

  1501. shape how

  1502. we love

  1503. and how

  1504. we long.

  1505. But most

  1506. of all,

  1507. Father,

  1508. in this

  1509. moment,

  1510. we just

  1511. give you

  1512. thanks and

  1513. we give you

  1514. praise that

  1515. you would

  1516. look upon

  1517. us,

  1518. guilty

  1519. sinners,

  1520. sinners,

  1521. and you

  1522. would choose

  1523. to take up

  1524. residence

  1525. within,

  1526. that you

  1527. would come

  1528. and you

  1529. would dwell

  1530. within us,

  1531. and that

  1532. where we

  1533. had chosen

  1534. death again

  1535. and again

  1536. and again,

  1537. you would

  1538. come and

  1539. free us

  1540. to choose

  1541. life and

  1542. to be

  1543. alive.

  1544. Lord,

  1545. help us

  1546. as a

  1547. church

  1548. to be

  1549. people

  1550. who live

  1551. by your

  1552. Spirit,

  1553. we pray.

  1554. Amen.
