  1. Daddy.

  2. Daddy.

  3. Daddy is a powerful word.

  4. It has power for good.

  5. It has power to bring up painful memories.

  6. For some of us, it is a word with rich, warm, wonderful connotations of home and safety and security.

  7. And for others, it does not.

  8. I remember my dad.

  9. He passed away in 2004.

  10. He was not always the most affectionate, coming from a stodgy New England family where children were to be seen, not heard.

  11. And so, but he was always a cheerleader.

  12. He provided well.

  13. At his funeral, I shared about perhaps the most poignant image that I have of my father.

  14. And that is this.

  15. When we were kids, we would often have vociferous and boisterous conversation at our dinner table.

  16. I don't know if your dinner table is like that or not.

  17. But we would get into loud conversations.

  18. And surprisingly, maybe to some of you, I was the quiet one.

  19. And I would try to insinuate my thoughts or opinions into the conversation.

  20. And often find myself increasingly frustrated as I was talked over, dominated, shut out, denied.

  21. And at times I would just lose it.

  22. And in frustration and tears, I would slam my chair back from the table and run away to my room.

  23. My dad would be the one who would come to get me.

  24. Mom was probably more the one I would process my everyday trials with.

  25. But my dad would always come to get me.

  26. Not a lot of discussion, not a lot of words.

  27. He would say, hey, why don't you come back?

  28. Why don't you come back to the table?

  29. What's your relationship with your father like?

  30. What have you experienced?

  31. You know, one of the things that I think is often true is that we project our human earthly relationships with our father

  32. onto our understanding of God as father as well.

  33. For some of you, your earthly relationships have been full of pain or fear or trauma.

  34. And so when you hear the word God the father, it doesn't seem like a good thing to you.

  35. Maybe some of you, it does.

  36. My hope is that this morning, as we continue in our series in the book of Romans,

  37. and as we look at a glorious passage about God and his relationship to us,

  38. as he is our Abba Father and we are his children,

  39. that God will redeem and renew and restore and refresh in you a sense of awe and wonder

  40. at God as our father.

  41. So if you want to turn with me in your Bibles,

  42. if you're looking in the Pew Bibles, it's page 944.

  43. Therefore, we're in the book of Romans.

  44. We're going to be looking at verses 14 through 17 this morning,

  45. but I'm going to read the passage leading up to it so that we get a bit of the context.

  46. So let's read together Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  47. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  48. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

  49. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do,

  50. by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin.

  51. He condemns sin in the flesh.

  52. In order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not according to the flesh,

  53. but according to the Spirit.

  54. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh.

  55. But those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

  56. To set the mind on the flesh is death.

  57. But to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

  58. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law.

  59. Indeed, it cannot.

  60. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  61. You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.

  62. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him.

  63. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

  64. If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,

  65. He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

  66. So then, brothers, we are debtors not to the flesh to live according to the flesh.

  67. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die.

  68. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

  69. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

  70. For you did not receive the Spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,

  71. but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry,

  72. Abba, Father.

  73. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

  74. And if children, then heirs.

  75. Heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ,

  76. provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.

  77. Let's pray together.

  78. Lord, we thank You for this glorious word and this glorious truth.

  79. And Lord, we ask for Your help this morning.

  80. Lord, for we acknowledge that it touches us deeply,

  81. and for some of us that will be a painful place for us to go.

  82. But Lord, we pray that You would bring a healing and restoring.

  83. Lord, and bring awe and wonder.

  84. Lord, bring a sense of security and belonging,

  85. of hope and of love to our hearts.

  86. Lord, I pray for Your help this morning.

  87. Lord, that I might preach Your word clearly,

  88. and that You might, through me, speak to all of us.

  89. Lord, we pray these things in Jesus' name.

  90. Amen.

  91. Amen.

  92. Well, as we're looking at verses 14 through 17 this morning,

  93. there is only one big idea.

  94. And that is this.

  95. That we are sons of God if we are in Christ Jesus.

  96. Paul, in leading up to this, he's been talking about,

  97. if you were here last week,

  98. Pastor Greg talked about this incredible thing that God has done.

  99. He has made us now debtors,

  100. not to the flesh,

  101. not to our sinful nature,

  102. to continue living in rebellion against God,

  103. and in the ways that lead to death in our lives.

  104. But instead, God has given us His Spirit,

  105. so that now we might actually live a new way

  106. in His power,

  107. by putting to death those deadly things in our lives,

  108. and instead living the life that God has won for us

  109. in His Son, Jesus Christ.

  110. And so Paul says,

  111. for all who are led by the Spirit of God,

  112. and part of what he means by that is,

  113. all who are now putting to death the deeds of the flesh,

  114. all who are walking in this new identity,

  115. this new pattern of life that we have.

  116. It's partly why I read 1 through 12,

  117. as well as the passage that we're looking at this morning,

  118. because I wanted you to see,

  119. Paul is building this argument.

  120. You are now in Christ.

  121. There is no condemnation.

  122. God has set you free from the law of sin and death.

  123. God has now done what you could not do,

  124. so that you can now do what God calls you to.

  125. He has given you a life,

  126. and a life in His Spirit,

  127. free from condemnation,

  128. regenerated with a new life.

  129. And now,

  130. for all who are in Christ,

  131. for all who have placed their faith in Christ,

  132. He gives this incredible word.

  133. Lord,

  134. you are sons of God.

  135. This is a remarkable thing.

  136. But we maybe need to clear the brush a little bit,

  137. because some of you are sitting here thinking,

  138. I'm not a son.

  139. I'm a daughter.

  140. Can't make it there.

  141. Can't get to the son thing.

  142. How do we do that?

  143. And this is important for us to think through,

  144. because Paul,

  145. as you see further on,

  146. he goes to children.

  147. Verse 16,

  148. he changes the image from son to children,

  149. and he could have done that from the very beginning.

  150. Why did he not do it?

  151. Well,

  152. because

  153. he is pulling on

  154. a first century vision

  155. of what it meant to be a son

  156. that was contextualized in the era.

  157. If you were a son,

  158. you were,

  159. then,

  160. the carrier of the family line.

  161. You held all the privilege,

  162. all the position,

  163. and,

  164. particularly if you were the first son,

  165. all of the inheritance,

  166. maybe not all,

  167. but the lion's share of the inheritance

  168. would actually come to you

  169. as the son.

  170. And what Paul is referring to here

  171. is not a gendered position,

  172. but a social position.

  173. The ESV helpfully puts in,

  174. this word could be translated,

  175. sons and daughters.

  176. It is clearly inclusive

  177. of all people,

  178. but he uses sonship

  179. because a son has a particular position

  180. in the first century

  181. of all of this privilege.

  182. privilege.

  183. And here's the remarkable thing.

  184. What Paul is saying,

  185. given the flow of this argument,

  186. is if you are in Christ,

  187. if you've been set free

  188. from the law of sin and death,

  189. if the Spirit of God dwells in you,

  190. if you are led by the Spirit of God,

  191. then all of you,

  192. men and women,

  193. are sons of God.

  194. Did you see the all in verse 14?

  195. Look at it again.

  196. All of you are sons of God.

  197. He's saying all of you are able

  198. to step into this privileged position.

  199. What a wonderful thing this is.

  200. And Paul is saying this is true.

  201. This is true of all men and all women,

  202. which was revolutionary at that time.

  203. He's saying it is true

  204. for those who are slaves

  205. and those who are free.

  206. You are all members of God's family.

  207. When the social divisions of the day

  208. would have separated those out

  209. and said, no, they have to be kept

  210. differentiated.

  211. And even religiously,

  212. Jews and Gentiles,

  213. you are all brought in

  214. to God's family

  215. and able to be sons of God.

  216. When for those from the Jewish background

  217. in that time,

  218. they would have seen those outside

  219. as unable to be brought in

  220. unless they actually became Jewish.

  221. So Paul is saying something revolutionary here

  222. as he says,

  223. you are all in Christ

  224. sons of God.

  225. Then he spends the next three verses

  226. explaining that

  227. and unpacking that more.

  228. And that's what we're gonna look at

  229. for the next couple of minutes together.

  230. First of all,

  231. look with me at verse 15.

  232. You do not receive the spirit of slavery

  233. to fall back into fear,

  234. but you have received the spirit of adoption

  235. as sons

  236. by whom we cry,

  237. Abba, Father.

  238. So the first thing Paul wants to do

  239. is to clarify,

  240. for some,

  241. sonship before God

  242. might be this fearsome thing.

  243. Right?

  244. To approach a holy God

  245. to say that you are his son

  246. and to be a part of his family,

  247. that might be terrifying

  248. because he might destroy you.

  249. You know that God is a righteous judge.

  250. You know that God is a holy God

  251. who cannot tolerate evil in his presence.

  252. Paul says,

  253. no,

  254. becoming a son

  255. doesn't come

  256. with that kind of fear.

  257. It doesn't come

  258. with the slavery

  259. of trying to please God

  260. and the despair

  261. of knowing that you're unable to do that.

  262. It doesn't come

  263. from the fear of rejection.

  264. What if I blow it?

  265. Is God gonna throw me out

  266. of his family?

  267. In Romans 6,

  268. Paul has already said

  269. that when we were slaves to sin,

  270. we were unable

  271. to do what is right before God.

  272. And if we are in that state,

  273. what a fearsome thing it is then

  274. to be called part of God's family.

  275. We're just gonna be constantly in time out

  276. the whole life.

  277. But the Christian life

  278. is not a dutiful one

  279. because there is now,

  280. therefore,

  281. no condemnation

  282. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  283. Because Christ has done for us

  284. what we could not do

  285. so that we might be accepted.

  286. And so,

  287. Paul spins his own

  288. and said,

  289. this is not,

  290. sonship does not have this fear

  291. that God is going to continue

  292. to command us to perform

  293. and therefore justify ourselves

  294. by our perfection.

  295. He says,

  296. no,

  297. you have now

  298. received a spirit

  299. of adoption.

  300. Adoption

  301. as sons.

  302. And he says this amazing

  303. and incredible thing

  304. as he does this.

  305. Because as we've talked about,

  306. being adopted as a son

  307. means that we have

  308. all the rights

  309. and privileges

  310. of sonship

  311. in a family

  312. that we do not,

  313. by nature,

  314. belong to.

  315. In the Roman culture

  316. in the first century,

  317. a person who didn't have

  318. an actual son

  319. might adopt a servant,

  320. a slave,

  321. an orphan,

  322. to bring him in

  323. and say,

  324. you are now my son

  325. and you are going

  326. to take this role

  327. with all of the rights

  328. and the privileges

  329. and the responsibilities

  330. of sonship.

  331. And Paul is saying,

  332. that's what God

  333. has done for us.

  334. And as that son

  335. is adopted

  336. into a Roman family,

  337. all the past debts

  338. would have been paid out.

  339. All the past

  340. outstanding requirements

  341. would have been solved.

  342. And that son now

  343. is brought in

  344. and he gets a new identity.

  345. He gets a new name.

  346. He gets a new standing

  347. in society.

  348. He has a new inheritance

  349. of things that

  350. were not his

  351. before.

  352. And friends,

  353. this is what adoption

  354. does for us.

  355. It brings us

  356. from a place

  357. of alienation

  358. to a place

  359. of belonging

  360. in God's family.

  361. adoption

  362. brings us

  363. from lostness

  364. and loneliness

  365. to being

  366. in a place

  367. of being loved

  368. by the creator

  369. of the world.

  370. But friends,

  371. it's more than that

  372. because it's not

  373. just being made right

  374. and it's not just

  375. being put

  376. in a good standing.

  377. But he finishes

  378. by saying,

  379. by whom we cry,

  380. Abba,

  381. Father.

  382. Father.

  383. Daddy.

  384. The first word

  385. is Aramaic.

  386. The second one

  387. is Greek.

  388. They mean the same

  389. thing.

  390. Paul repeats it

  391. so that we get it.

  392. Friends,

  393. God has described

  394. as many things

  395. throughout the scripture.

  396. He is the sovereign

  397. creator

  398. of the whole world.

  399. He is the ruler

  400. and the king

  401. over all things.

  402. He is the judge

  403. to whom all

  404. are accountable.

  405. But remarkably,

  406. in the New Testament,

  407. Father becomes

  408. the most important,

  409. maybe,

  410. certainly the most central

  411. image

  412. of how we relate

  413. to God.

  414. God.

  415. What a wonderful

  416. thing this is.

  417. This is why

  418. when Jesus

  419. teaches his disciples

  420. to pray,

  421. he begins

  422. not with,

  423. O great God

  424. or O sovereign,

  425. but Father,

  426. our Father.

  427. Holy be your name.

  428. And so forth.

  429. So as J.I. Packer

  430. reads,

  431. by the way,

  432. J.I. Packer

  433. in his book

  434. Knowing God

  435. has a beautiful

  436. chapter on adoption,

  437. being adopted

  438. as God's child.

  439. If you

  440. are looking

  441. for more reading,

  442. I highly recommend it.

  443. In Knowing God,

  444. he writes this,

  445. Adoption is a family

  446. idea conceived

  447. in terms of love

  448. and viewing God

  449. as Father.

  450. In adoption,

  451. God takes us

  452. into his family

  453. and fellowship.

  454. He establishes us

  455. as his children

  456. and heirs.

  457. Looseness,

  458. affection,

  459. and generosity

  460. are at the heart

  461. of this relationship.

  462. To be right

  463. with God

  464. the judge

  465. is a great thing,

  466. but to be loved

  467. and cared for

  468. by God

  469. the Father

  470. is even

  471. greater.

  472. And so friends,

  473. this says

  474. for all who

  475. are in Christ

  476. Jesus,

  477. we now have

  478. a relationship

  479. with God

  480. that includes

  481. both

  482. intimacy

  483. and authority.

  484. We have

  485. a relationship

  486. with a God

  487. who is at once

  488. imminent

  489. and transcendent.

  490. He is both

  491. sovereign over all

  492. and yet

  493. he is

  494. the one

  495. that we can

  496. run to

  497. when we fall

  498. and skin our knee

  499. and need to be held.

  500. He is the holy

  501. one who cannot

  502. tolerate evil

  503. and yet

  504. also he is

  505. the God

  506. of love.

  507. Behold

  508. how great

  509. the Father's love

  510. that we should be

  511. called children

  512. of God.

  513. Friends,

  514. think about this.

  515. if you'll

  516. excuse me

  517. I want to

  518. translate it

  519. out of the

  520. human realm

  521. for a minute.

  522. If you had a dog

  523. who had a master

  524. and every time

  525. he did something

  526. wrong

  527. he was beaten

  528. he was starved

  529. he was deprived

  530. when that man

  531. walked through the door

  532. at the end of the day

  533. what do you think

  534. the dog would do?

  535. run

  536. hide

  537. cower

  538. at best

  539. not care

  540. and stay away.

  541. But if that master

  542. is a loving

  543. master

  544. who showers

  545. his dog

  546. not only with

  547. provision

  548. of a safe place

  549. to live

  550. and food

  551. and exercise

  552. but showers

  553. that dog

  554. with affection

  555. and love

  556. and companionship.

  557. I grew up

  558. with golden retrievers

  559. I know what they do.

  560. They jump on you

  561. they turn around

  562. in circles

  563. they chase their tail

  564. they slobber

  565. all over you

  566. but they rejoice

  567. and they come

  568. running to you.

  569. Friends,

  570. if this is true

  571. of a dog

  572. how much more

  573. is it true?

  574. in our human

  575. relationships

  576. we have a heavenly

  577. father

  578. who loves us

  579. so much

  580. and we are able

  581. to come to him

  582. and cry

  583. Abba Father

  584. to him.

  585. Friends,

  586. Paul goes on

  587. not only do we have

  588. this intimacy

  589. rather than slavery

  590. but verse 16

  591. being a child

  592. of God

  593. is an experiential

  594. as well as

  595. a positional

  596. relationship

  597. with God.

  598. Let me explain

  599. those terms

  600. so you understand.

  601. A positional

  602. relationship

  603. is what we are

  604. declared.

  605. This happens

  606. whenever an adoption

  607. happens.

  608. There is a day

  609. when the papers

  610. are signed

  611. and that child

  612. becomes

  613. legally

  614. and relationally

  615. connected

  616. to the adopted

  617. parents

  618. in a positional

  619. way.

  620. They are now

  621. parent and child

  622. father and son

  623. mother,

  624. daughter.

  625. They are now

  626. brought into that

  627. family.

  628. There is a position

  629. that is true.

  630. Verse 16

  631. says

  632. there is more

  633. than just position.

  634. the spirit

  635. himself

  636. bears witness

  637. with our spirit

  638. that we

  639. are children

  640. of God.

  641. Commentators

  642. argue a little

  643. about what

  644. exactly this

  645. means

  646. but

  647. in my

  648. understanding

  649. the most

  650. clear way

  651. that this

  652. makes sense

  653. is that God

  654. has given us

  655. his Holy Spirit

  656. to live

  657. within us

  658. so that the

  659. Holy Spirit

  660. might remind

  661. us

  662. that is

  663. bear witness

  664. or testify

  665. to our own

  666. spirits

  667. about

  668. who we

  669. now are

  670. as children

  671. of God.

  672. The British

  673. preacher

  674. Martin Lloyd

  675. Jones

  676. quotes an

  677. old Puritan

  678. from a couple

  679. of centuries

  680. ago

  681. named Thomas

  682. Goodwin

  683. explaining it

  684. in this way.

  685. Picture

  686. a man

  687. walking along

  688. the road

  689. with his

  690. little boy

  691. holding hands

  692. father and

  693. son,

  694. son and

  695. father.

  696. The boy

  697. knows that

  698. the man

  699. is his

  700. father

  701. and that

  702. his father

  703. loves him

  704. but all

  705. of a sudden

  706. the man

  707. sweeps

  708. the boy

  709. up into

  710. his arms

  711. embraces

  712. him and

  713. kisses him.

  714. Now the

  715. boy is

  716. actually no

  717. more of a

  718. son when

  719. he is being

  720. embraced and

  721. kissed than

  722. he was

  723. before.

  724. The father's

  725. action has

  726. not changed

  727. the status

  728. of the

  729. son but

  730. oh the

  731. difference in

  732. the enjoyment

  733. of the

  734. status.

  735. That son

  736. walking along

  737. next to

  738. his father

  739. knows he's

  740. a son but

  741. when his

  742. father scoops

  743. him up and

  744. showers him

  745. with that

  746. love and

  747. affection it

  748. becomes not

  749. just a

  750. positional

  751. relationship but

  752. an experiential

  753. one.

  754. And friends

  755. what Paul

  756. tells us is

  757. that for all

  758. who are in

  759. Christ Jesus

  760. if you are

  761. truly a son

  762. of God

  763. then the

  764. Holy Spirit

  765. is now

  766. telling you

  767. and reminding

  768. you on a

  769. daily basis

  770. that you

  771. are

  772. loved by

  773. God

  774. accepted

  775. by him

  776. welcomed

  777. by him

  778. embraced

  779. by him.

  780. Friends this

  781. is the tragic

  782. end of the

  783. parable

  784. of the

  785. prodigal son.

  786. The prodigal

  787. son goes away

  788. abandons his

  789. father

  790. lives his

  791. own selfish

  792. life

  793. finally

  794. realizes

  795. how foolish

  796. he's been

  797. comes back

  798. knowing he

  799. has no

  800. right to

  801. reclaim

  802. a position

  803. of sonship.

  804. Yet when

  805. the father

  806. sees him

  807. coming down

  808. the road

  809. he runs

  810. in a most

  811. undignified

  812. manner he

  813. runs

  814. to embrace

  815. his son

  816. and he

  817. gives

  818. them

  819. all

  820. he

  821. restores

  822. to him

  823. all the

  824. full

  825. privileges

  826. of the

  827. robe

  828. and the

  829. ring

  830. and the

  831. sandals

  832. and he

  833. throws

  834. the party

  835. for that

  836. son to

  837. know how

  838. much he

  839. is loved

  840. and yet

  841. the son

  842. who's been

  843. there the

  844. whole time

  845. is out

  846. in the

  847. fields

  848. bitter

  849. and angry

  850. and won't

  851. come in

  852. to the

  853. party

  854. and to

  855. the

  856. father

  857. because he's

  858. not experiencing

  859. this

  860. because he

  861. doesn't know

  862. this

  863. his position

  864. friends the

  865. holy spirit

  866. for all who are

  867. in christ

  868. jesus is

  869. nudging

  870. and reminding

  871. and whispering

  872. and maybe

  873. shouting

  874. to your

  875. hurting

  876. stubborn

  877. hard

  878. heart

  879. i love

  880. you

  881. you

  882. are my

  883. child

  884. this is the

  885. most wonderful

  886. thing about

  887. adoption

  888. isn't it

  889. when we're

  890. born into a

  891. family you feel

  892. like yeah

  893. nobody got to

  894. pick me

  895. i just

  896. just happened

  897. for good or

  898. for bad

  899. but when

  900. you're adopted

  901. someone looks

  902. at you and

  903. they say i

  904. choose you

  905. and god

  906. looks at his

  907. children he

  908. says i chose

  909. you and

  910. you and

  911. you and

  912. you and

  913. you i

  914. chose you

  915. to be

  916. mine

  917. not because

  918. you are

  919. worthy not

  920. because you

  921. have to

  922. perform to

  923. keep it

  924. up not

  925. because of

  926. any of

  927. those things

  928. but because

  929. i loved

  930. you

  931. friends i

  932. wonder this

  933. morning if

  934. you were

  935. listening to

  936. the spirit

  937. i wonder if

  938. some of you

  939. are here this

  940. morning and

  941. you haven't

  942. put your

  943. faith in

  944. christ if

  945. you haven't

  946. experienced the

  947. father's love

  948. for you if

  949. if you're

  950. still wondering

  951. whether god

  952. could accept

  953. you

  954. well friends

  955. this is what

  956. the good news

  957. of the gospel

  958. is all about

  959. that in

  960. jesus god

  961. has done

  962. everything

  963. necessary for

  964. you to be

  965. accepted by

  966. him and

  967. his call for

  968. you is to

  969. turn from

  970. all your

  971. other ways

  972. of trying to

  973. be right

  974. before god

  975. on your

  976. own to

  977. say i

  978. can't do

  979. it i'm a

  980. sinner and

  981. a failure

  982. to acknowledge

  983. your helplessness

  984. and then throw

  985. your trust on

  986. god and as

  987. he calls you

  988. to do that

  989. he will meet

  990. you and

  991. embrace you

  992. and then you

  993. will know the

  994. whispering of

  995. the holy spirit

  996. saying you are

  997. my child and i

  998. love you

  999. not only does

  1000. being a child

  1001. of god

  1002. mean

  1003. intimacy

  1004. rather than

  1005. slavery

  1006. not only does

  1007. it mean an

  1008. experiential as

  1009. well as a

  1010. positional

  1011. relationship

  1012. but verse 17

  1013. it means we

  1014. are joined with

  1015. christ in all

  1016. things

  1017. look with me

  1018. at verse 17

  1019. again i want

  1020. you to look for

  1021. the preposition

  1022. with

  1023. if the spirit

  1024. nope that's a

  1025. wrong verse i'm

  1026. looking here

  1027. verse 17

  1028. if children

  1029. then heirs

  1030. heirs of god

  1031. and fellow

  1032. heirs with

  1033. christ

  1034. provided we

  1035. suffer with

  1036. him

  1037. in order that

  1038. we may also

  1039. be glorified

  1040. with

  1041. him

  1042. so friends

  1043. this is the

  1044. most amazing

  1045. thing of all

  1046. we are now

  1047. heirs with god

  1048. we've talked

  1049. about this

  1050. already

  1051. this is part

  1052. of the

  1053. the reality

  1054. is that

  1055. when god

  1056. brings us

  1057. into his

  1058. family he

  1059. brings us

  1060. into the

  1061. family of

  1062. god who

  1063. owns and

  1064. rules everything

  1065. and specifically

  1066. then he says

  1067. in hebrews 1

  1068. 2 that

  1069. he has made

  1070. god

  1071. or made

  1072. christ

  1073. jesus christ

  1074. the heir

  1075. of all

  1076. things

  1077. and so we

  1078. are now

  1079. brought into

  1080. a family

  1081. where we

  1082. have

  1083. everything

  1084. everything

  1085. in god's

  1086. kingdom

  1087. everything

  1088. in the

  1089. world

  1090. is

  1091. is

  1092. going to

  1093. be ours

  1094. one day

  1095. we are

  1096. brought

  1097. into

  1098. this

  1099. incredible

  1100. privilege

  1101. and this

  1102. incredible

  1103. position

  1104. all the

  1105. riches of

  1106. knowing god

  1107. and being

  1108. found in

  1109. him

  1110. all the

  1111. wealth

  1112. of participating

  1113. in his

  1114. perfect

  1115. kingdom

  1116. all the

  1117. benefit

  1118. of living

  1119. under

  1120. his

  1121. loving

  1122. rule

  1123. and one

  1124. day

  1125. ruling

  1126. with him

  1127. over

  1128. a redeemed

  1129. creation

  1130. where there

  1131. will be

  1132. no more

  1133. sin

  1134. and no

  1135. more

  1136. sorrow

  1137. no more

  1138. sickness

  1139. and no

  1140. more

  1141. death

  1142. there will

  1143. be no

  1144. more

  1145. strife

  1146. because the

  1147. victory

  1148. will have

  1149. been won

  1150. and we

  1151. will

  1152. be with

  1153. him

  1154. and just

  1155. like the

  1156. pevensees

  1157. experience

  1158. the fullness

  1159. of life

  1160. in Narnia

  1161. as kings

  1162. and queens

  1163. as sons

  1164. and daughters

  1165. of Adam

  1166. redeemed

  1167. by Aslan

  1168. we too

  1169. will experience

  1170. that richness

  1171. and that

  1172. fullness

  1173. all the

  1174. love

  1175. all the

  1176. privilege

  1177. all the

  1178. status

  1179. and all

  1180. the wealth

  1181. that our

  1182. hearts

  1183. truly yearn

  1184. for

  1185. not the

  1186. passing

  1187. fleeting

  1188. treasures

  1189. of this

  1190. world

  1191. but the

  1192. things that

  1193. our hearts

  1194. truly long

  1195. for

  1196. we have

  1197. all of

  1198. that

  1199. in Christ

  1200. we have

  1201. all we

  1202. ever need

  1203. and what

  1204. we will

  1205. find

  1206. in eternity

  1207. is that

  1208. the thing

  1209. we most

  1210. need

  1211. is God

  1212. himself

  1213. and when

  1214. we have

  1215. him

  1216. it almost

  1217. doesn't

  1218. matter

  1219. everything

  1220. else

  1221. will fade

  1222. because we

  1223. have

  1224. God

  1225. himself

  1226. as our

  1227. father

  1228. and we

  1229. are living

  1230. with him

  1231. as he

  1232. reigns over

  1233. his new

  1234. creation

  1235. and that

  1236. will be

  1237. enough

  1238. for us

  1239. friends I

  1240. wonder though

  1241. if you

  1242. hear that

  1243. and you

  1244. think well

  1245. that sounds

  1246. really nice

  1247. but that's

  1248. not life

  1249. right now

  1250. is it

  1251. Paul knows

  1252. that

  1253. that's

  1254. exactly

  1255. what the

  1256. rest of

  1257. this verse

  1258. tells us

  1259. see this

  1260. is the

  1261. interesting

  1262. thing

  1263. of what

  1264. Paul is

  1265. telling us

  1266. is that

  1267. when we

  1268. are joined

  1269. with Christ

  1270. we are joined

  1271. with Christ

  1272. in all

  1273. of who

  1274. Christ is

  1275. and what

  1276. he's doing

  1277. we are not

  1278. called to be

  1279. the redeemer

  1280. in the same

  1281. way that he

  1282. is but we

  1283. are called

  1284. to live in

  1285. the pattern

  1286. of his

  1287. life and

  1288. being joined

  1289. with him

  1290. in this

  1291. incredible

  1292. position

  1293. as joint

  1294. heirs

  1295. with him

  1296. we then

  1297. walk

  1298. the road

  1299. that he

  1300. walked

  1301. for us

  1302. as we

  1303. follow him

  1304. and so

  1305. we have

  1306. this

  1307. surprising

  1308. thing

  1309. because

  1310. I

  1311. think

  1312. that

  1313. maybe

  1314. you

  1315. have

  1316. experienced

  1317. this

  1318. to hear

  1319. the message

  1320. you are

  1321. beloved

  1322. child of

  1323. God

  1324. and he

  1325. has given

  1326. you

  1327. everything

  1328. that you

  1329. need

  1330. you have

  1331. this

  1332. incredible

  1333. identity

  1334. and position

  1335. and inheritance

  1336. and God

  1337. is looking

  1338. out for you

  1339. and you

  1340. think

  1341. then why

  1342. is my

  1343. life

  1344. so hard

  1345. if my

  1346. life is

  1347. this hard

  1348. how could

  1349. it be

  1350. that God

  1351. actually

  1352. loves me

  1353. and is my

  1354. heavenly

  1355. father

  1356. because

  1357. wouldn't

  1358. a father

  1359. stop

  1360. these

  1361. things

  1362. from

  1363. happening

  1364. and Paul

  1365. says no

  1366. Paul says

  1367. that a

  1368. loving

  1369. father

  1370. loves us

  1371. so much

  1372. that he

  1373. wants us

  1374. to walk

  1375. the path

  1376. that Christ

  1377. walked

  1378. and to

  1379. know what

  1380. that means

  1381. because

  1382. if by

  1383. our logic

  1384. God

  1385. would

  1386. prevent

  1387. those

  1388. things

  1389. from

  1390. happening

  1391. do you

  1392. know

  1393. what

  1394. would

  1395. have

  1396. happened

  1397. to us

  1398. Christ

  1399. never

  1400. would

  1401. have

  1402. died

  1403. on the

  1404. cross

  1405. the

  1406. injustice

  1407. and the

  1408. suffering

  1409. that he

  1410. experienced

  1411. for us

  1412. never

  1413. would have

  1414. happened

  1415. if he

  1416. had been

  1417. a heavenly

  1418. father

  1419. like that

  1420. but in

  1421. fact his

  1422. love was

  1423. so great

  1424. for us

  1425. that he

  1426. allowed

  1427. those things

  1428. to happen

  1429. in fact he

  1430. planned for

  1431. them to

  1432. happen

  1433. for our

  1434. redemption

  1435. Jesus

  1436. who did

  1437. not count

  1438. equality

  1439. with God

  1440. something to

  1441. be grasped

  1442. but humbled

  1443. himself

  1444. took on

  1445. the form

  1446. of a

  1447. servant

  1448. suffered

  1449. in his

  1450. incarnate

  1451. form

  1452. tiredness

  1453. and hunger

  1454. but more

  1455. than that

  1456. as he

  1457. identified

  1458. with us

  1459. he then

  1460. went to

  1461. the cross

  1462. and took

  1463. upon

  1464. himself

  1465. our

  1466. sin

  1467. and the

  1468. wrath

  1469. of God

  1470. against

  1471. that

  1472. evil

  1473. that

  1474. dwells

  1475. in the

  1476. hearts

  1477. of all

  1478. of us

  1479. apart

  1480. from

  1481. God

  1482. Jesus

  1483. walked

  1484. this

  1485. incredible

  1486. path

  1487. of

  1488. suffering

  1489. and he

  1490. did it

  1491. for our

  1492. redemption

  1493. so that

  1494. by dying

  1495. in our

  1496. place

  1497. and rising

  1498. again

  1499. to new

  1500. life

  1501. he would

  1502. be able

  1503. to defeat

  1504. sin

  1505. and death

  1506. and so

  1507. to capture

  1508. us up

  1509. with him

  1510. in glory

  1511. for he

  1512. has been

  1513. exalted

  1514. to the

  1515. right hand

  1516. of the

  1517. father

  1518. he has

  1519. a name

  1520. which is

  1521. greater than

  1522. any name

  1523. in heaven

  1524. or earth

  1525. and the

  1526. Christian life

  1527. now is

  1528. not one

  1529. that does

  1530. not suffer

  1531. but one

  1532. that in

  1533. suffering

  1534. finds

  1535. fellowship

  1536. with the

  1537. one who

  1538. suffered

  1539. for our

  1540. redemption

  1541. and in

  1542. walking

  1543. through that

  1544. believing

  1545. that God

  1546. is doing

  1547. a greater

  1548. work of

  1549. redemption

  1550. in our

  1551. lives

  1552. in the

  1553. lives of

  1554. those around

  1555. us and

  1556. in this

  1557. world

  1558. than we

  1559. could ever

  1560. imagine

  1561. and as we

  1562. are identified

  1563. with Christ

  1564. and being a

  1565. son of the

  1566. father

  1567. we know

  1568. that this

  1569. will be a

  1570. part of

  1571. what our

  1572. lives will

  1573. look like

  1574. but friends

  1575. we know

  1576. it is all

  1577. worth it

  1578. because as

  1579. we hang

  1580. on through

  1581. those hard

  1582. things and

  1583. as God

  1584. gives us

  1585. the patient

  1586. endurance

  1587. in our

  1588. fight against

  1589. sin

  1590. in our

  1591. fight

  1592. as we

  1593. experience

  1594. injustice

  1595. and fallenness

  1596. in the

  1597. world

  1598. it will all

  1599. be worth it

  1600. because not

  1601. only are we

  1602. going to be

  1603. with Christ

  1604. in our

  1605. sufferings

  1606. but we

  1607. will be

  1608. with him

  1609. in glory

  1610. we will

  1611. be raised

  1612. with him

  1613. to a new

  1614. and eternal

  1615. life

  1616. where there

  1617. will be

  1618. no more

  1619. sickness

  1620. and sorrow

  1621. and death

  1622. and no more

  1623. suffering

  1624. we will be

  1625. raised with him

  1626. to this

  1627. exalted

  1628. position

  1629. where we

  1630. will sit

  1631. and reign

  1632. with him

  1633. and we

  1634. will know

  1635. the father's

  1636. love

  1637. without pain

  1638. without

  1639. trial

  1640. our sin

  1641. will be

  1642. done away

  1643. with

  1644. perfectly

  1645. and what

  1646. a glorious

  1647. glorious

  1648. thing

  1649. it is

  1650. and so

  1651. in fact

  1652. friends

  1653. what Paul

  1654. is telling

  1655. us here

  1656. is not

  1657. only is

  1658. that the

  1659. path

  1660. but in

  1661. fact it

  1662. is a

  1663. sign

  1664. if you

  1665. are a

  1666. child of

  1667. God

  1668. if you

  1669. are a

  1670. son of

  1671. God

  1672. you will

  1673. suffer

  1674. it is

  1675. an unpleasant

  1676. truth

  1677. to our

  1678. ears

  1679. and yet

  1680. it is

  1681. a consistent

  1682. witness

  1683. of the

  1684. scriptures

  1685. we will

  1686. suffer

  1687. in this

  1688. world

  1689. but it

  1690. is in

  1691. fact

  1692. a sign

  1693. that we

  1694. are

  1695. sons

  1696. of

  1697. God

  1698. when we

  1699. suffer

  1700. with

  1701. Christ

  1702. and so

  1703. anticipate

  1704. and look

  1705. forward

  1706. to the

  1707. glory

  1708. that will

  1709. be

  1710. with

  1711. him

  1712. and so

  1713. we say

  1714. with

  1715. Paul

  1716. we count

  1717. all things

  1718. as lost

  1719. for the

  1720. sake of

  1721. knowing

  1722. Christ

  1723. that we

  1724. may know

  1725. him

  1726. and the

  1727. power of

  1728. his

  1729. resurrection

  1730. that we

  1731. may share

  1732. in his

  1733. sufferings

  1734. becoming

  1735. like him

  1736. in his

  1737. death

  1738. so that

  1739. by any

  1740. means

  1741. possible

  1742. we might

  1743. attain

  1744. resurrection

  1745. from the

  1746. dead

  1747. and glory

  1748. and this

  1749. is our

  1750. greatest

  1751. hope

  1752. that our

  1753. sonship

  1754. that our

  1755. being a

  1756. child of

  1757. God

  1758. is not

  1759. just for

  1760. this life

  1761. but it

  1762. is for

  1763. eternity

  1764. that we

  1765. will be

  1766. with him

  1767. Lord what a

  1768. great hope

  1769. this is

  1770. for some

  1771. of you

  1772. this message

  1773. this morning

  1774. is a

  1775. reminder

  1776. a needed

  1777. reminder

  1778. of something

  1779. maybe you've

  1780. lost sight

  1781. of

  1782. about who

  1783. God is

  1784. and who

  1785. you are

  1786. in relationship

  1787. to him

  1788. for some

  1789. of you

  1790. this may

  1791. be a

  1792. revolutionary

  1793. revelation

  1794. I've never

  1795. heard of

  1796. this before

  1797. God could

  1798. really be

  1799. like that

  1800. to me

  1801. for some

  1802. of you

  1803. it may

  1804. still feel

  1805. like a

  1806. fairy tale

  1807. too good

  1808. to be

  1809. true

  1810. my prayer

  1811. is that you

  1812. may know

  1813. the love

  1814. of God

  1815. the Father

  1816. today

  1817. that you

  1818. may know

  1819. his calling

  1820. on all

  1821. in Christ

  1822. to be

  1823. his sons

  1824. and daughters

  1825. his children

  1826. let's pray

  1827. behold what

  1828. manner of

  1829. love the

  1830. Father has

  1831. bestowed on

  1832. us that we

  1833. should be

  1834. called

  1835. children of

  1836. God

  1837. Lord may

  1838. by your

  1839. spirit

  1840. you

  1841. help us

  1842. this morning

  1843. to know

  1844. these things

  1845. are true

  1846. Lord to

  1847. convict our

  1848. hearts when

  1849. we are

  1850. doubtful

  1851. when we

  1852. find ourselves

  1853. rejecting

  1854. these truths

  1855. Lord will

  1856. you help

  1857. us when

  1858. we find

  1859. that this

  1860. is painful

  1861. and we

  1862. need your

  1863. help and

  1864. your healing

  1865. to consider

  1866. you as

  1867. our Father

  1868. Lord will

  1869. you

  1870. affirm

  1871. and deepen

  1872. our

  1873. understanding

  1874. of these

  1875. things

  1876. for your

  1877. glory we

  1878. pray

  1879. in Jesus

  1880. name

  1881. Amen

  1882. Amen

  1883. to

  1884. the

  1885. a

  1886. manure
