  1. Good morning, church.

  2. We are looking at Romans chapter 8 again this morning.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  3. We're going to focus in on verses 18 through 22.

  4. Let me invite you to turn there with me in the Pew Bible, Romans 8, verses 18 through

    Romans 8:18–22

  5. 22.

  6. The page number is in the bulletin if you need help finding that.

  7. We're going to look closely at these words this morning, so it'll be helpful if you have

  8. it open before you.

  9. Romans chapter 8, verse 18.

    Romans 8:18

  10. As we come to God's Word, let me pray for us.

  11. God, as we've just sung, we pray that you would, by your Spirit, give us a posture of humility

  12. now as we come before you in your Word.

  13. Lord, like Isaiah the prophet many years ago, we acknowledge that before you, our holy God,

  14. we are an unclean people.

  15. We are unclean in our lips, unclean in our hearts.

  16. God, only by your grace are we cleansed.

  17. So, as we come to your Word, we thank you for the grace that allows us to have ears that

  18. are open and hearts that are soft before you.

  19. We pray that your Spirit would take these words that you've inspired and that He would

  20. bring them like a gardening tool deep into our hearts to dig up that earth and sow good

  21. seed there, that it might bear much fruit in our life as a church.

  22. Thank you for working, God, in our midst.

  23. Thank you for being faithful to us, your people.

  24. Thank you for not abandoning us.

  25. Thank you for giving us this moment when you, God, speak to us.

  26. Give us ears to hear.

  27. We pray for Christ's sake.

  28. Amen.

  29. Amen.

  30. So, Romans chapter 8, we're going to pick up, we're going to begin in verse 16 to catch

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  31. some of the context for our sermon passage this morning.

  32. Let me begin in verse 16.

  33. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

  34. And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer

  35. with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.

  36. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the

  37. glory that is to be revealed to us.

  38. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

  39. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected

  40. it in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and

  41. obtain the glory, the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

  42. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until

  43. now.

  44. And not only the creation, but we ourselves who have the first fruits of the Spirit grown

  45. inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

  46. For in this hope we were saved.

  47. A hope that is seen is not hope for who hopes for what he sees.

  48. But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

  49. So, there are some passages in Scripture where you are allowed to step back and take in the

  50. whole view.

  51. There are some moments in the Bible where you get glimpses of the whole story in very short

  52. scope.

  53. And Romans 8 verses 18 and following is actually one of those places.

    Romans 8:18

  54. Up until this point in Romans 8, it's as if we've been following Paul on a trail through

  55. a dense forest.

  56. We've been going really slowly through this dense forest this fall, looking at all the

  57. details.

  58. And it's been beautiful in its own right.

  59. The trees have been towering above.

  60. The sunlight has been streaming through the canopy.

  61. But here in verse 18, the trail suddenly comes out of the thick undergrowth.

  62. And we find ourselves standing atop a cliff's edge.

  63. And what bursts into view is a breathtaking sight.

  64. A deep valley stretches out below.

  65. You're up so high now that you can see whole towns scattered into the distance.

  66. You can see smoke rising from chimneys.

  67. You can see the cars driving on the interstate.

  68. You can see for miles and miles into the horizon.

  69. You can see mountains rising up in majesty.

  70. You can see the ocean in the distance.

  71. You can see the ocean stretching even further beyond, farther than your eye can see.

  72. Here we stand in Romans 8, in this moment, taking in the whole scope of redemption and

  73. breathtaking heights.

  74. But this majestic view in Romans 8, 18 and following is here actually for a very practical

  75. pastoral purpose.

  76. Paul has just been describing in verses 14 through 17 how all those who believe in Jesus are made

  77. God's children.

  78. And if we are God's children, Paul says, then we are God's heirs.

  79. Heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.

  80. But if we are heirs with Christ, Paul says, then we will come into that inheritance in the

  81. same way as Jesus our King did.

  82. In other words, the road to glory will be marked with suffering.

  83. Paul ends verse 17 by saying, provided we suffer with Christ in order that we may also

  84. be glorified with him.

  85. Suffering and glory were inseparable for Jesus, weren't they?

  86. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, Hebrews says.

  87. And it will be the same for us as followers.

  88. 1 Peter 5 says that it's only after we have suffered a little while that we will enter into

  89. eternal glory in Christ.

  90. And this suffering that Paul is talking about here is not just persecution for the name of

  91. Christ, although it certainly includes that.

  92. It also takes within its scope the whole host of hardships and afflictions and diseases and

  93. broken relationships and heartbreaks that we will face in this life, in this age, in this

  94. fallen world.

  95. Being a child of God does not exempt us from these things in this age, you see.

  96. And when that suffering comes, whether it's a chronic bad back from that injury so many

  97. years ago, or whether it's cancer that takes your life, whether it's a friendship that's

  98. strained or whether it's a marriage that's on the verge of meltdown, whether it's a season

  99. of unemployment or a natural disaster that steals everything earthly that you love, your home,

  100. your family, your community, when suffering comes, as verse 17 says, it will, what is it

  101. that will keep us from walking away?

  102. What will keep us from thinking, God, if this is how you treat your children, no thanks.

  103. Paul has a very practical pastoral reason for leading us out of the woods to this high cliff's

  104. edge so we can take in the whole breathtaking view.

  105. Look at verse 18 again.

  106. For I consider, Paul says.

  107. I consider.

  108. This isn't Paul's sort of private opinion.

  109. This isn't sort of his ephemeral emotional response to some fleeting reality.

  110. No, this is Paul using his mind and thinking deeply, reasoning deeply about what he knows to

  111. be true in light of who God is and the gospel.

  112. As if to say we're not to be blown and tossed by sloppy thinking.

  113. No, Paul says, I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing

  114. with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

  115. Suffering and glory may be inseparable for the Christian, but they are not comparable, Paul says.

  116. Put them on a scale.

  117. That's a bit of what considering means.

  118. Weigh them up.

  119. Take the sufferings of this now time, this present age, and put them over here.

  120. And now take the glory that is to be revealed to us and put it on the other side.

  121. And Paul says, watch the scales tip so quickly that those sufferings suddenly seem so light

  122. in comparison.

  123. Now, what's Paul not saying here?

  124. He's not saying that suffering isn't suffering.

  125. He's not saying that evil is not evil.

  126. He's not denying the harsh, awful reality of our existence in a fallen world.

  127. He's not turning a blind eye to Alzheimer's or depression.

  128. He's not saying earthquakes and hurricanes don't matter or aren't really that bad.

  129. No, but he wants us to know.

  130. Paul wants us to know how to face those things when they come.

  131. And he says, put it on the scale.

  132. There's a glory that's going to be revealed.

  133. God is going to unfurl a beauty of such staggering dimensions in the coming age,

  134. a breathtaking majesty of such proportion that the real sufferings of this present time will

  135. not be worth comparison.

  136. And this glory will not just be revealed to us as if we'll sort of see it from afar and that's it.

  137. No, the word there actually means it will be revealed unto us.

  138. We will be participants in the glory to come.

  139. We will be swept up along with it.

  140. What God has in store in his coming glory isn't going to be a sort of mere movie that we get to watch

  141. in comfy stadium seating with a cup holder there and it sort of reclines.

  142. Have you been to those movie theaters?

  143. That's not what God has in store.

  144. It's not going to be like watching a movie.

  145. We know what's coming is going to be a drama for us to enact.

  146. Each of us with a part in hand.

  147. Each of us with a role to play.

  148. God's glory will come and it will sweep us into it as his children.

  149. So what is it?

  150. What is this vision, this practical pastoral vision of glory that Paul lays out for us

  151. so that when suffering comes on the path of discipleship, we won't give up?

  152. Well, it's a vision of glory that has two interlocking parts.

  153. The first part is a vision of God's creation.

  154. The second part is a vision of God's children, of us Christians.

  155. And they're interwoven, they're interlocked in this passage.

  156. And we're actually going to spend two weeks in our morning service

  157. unpacking this interlocking vision.

  158. Today we're going to look at verses 19 through 22

  159. and see what Paul has to say about God's creation, that first element.

  160. And then next week Greg's going to pick up in verse 23

  161. and we're going to consider what God has to say,

  162. what Paul has to say about us Christians, about us as God's children.

  163. So God's creation this week, God's children next week

  164. in this vision of glory to come.

  165. So what does Paul want us to see about God's creation

  166. and the incomparable glory that's in store for us?

  167. Well, first, before Paul actually gets into that,

  168. he wants to teach us a little bit.

  169. He wants us first to see that the present state of this world

  170. is not how it was originally intended to be.

  171. Let's get our thinking right, Paul says.

  172. Look at verse 20.

  173. Verse 20 says,

  174. the creation was subjected to futility.

  175. Now it's easy to look around the world and see futility, isn't it?

  176. That same word futility is used in the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes,

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  177. chapter 1.

  178. Everything under the sun, the writer of Ecclesiastes observes,

  179. it never seems to go anywhere.

  180. Empires are built, empires fall.

  181. The wise man builds up an inheritance,

  182. but it's left to a fool.

  183. Pleasures come and pleasures go.

  184. Everything seems trapped in a cycle of decay and disrepair.

  185. And as soon as you think you've made your mark,

  186. the tides of history rise and wash it all away.

  187. And those books you've labored long to write

  188. are found in the dusty corners of a used bookshop somewhere

  189. that will eventually go out of business thanks to Amazon.

  190. It's easy to look around and see futility, isn't it?

  191. Frustration, even emptiness.

  192. But that's not how it began.

  193. Creation didn't begin this way.

  194. It's not how it's supposed to be.

  195. You see, look carefully at what Paul says here.

  196. The creation was subjected to futility.

  197. Something happened along the way.

  198. And here Paul's alluding to the opening chapters of Genesis,

  199. where as a result of Adam's rebellion against God,

  200. God didn't just banish Adam and Eve from the garden,

  201. but God also cursed the ground.

  202. God subjected creation to futility.

  203. Now you have to see that God's intention for humanity,

  204. God's intention for us as his unique image bearers,

  205. he intended us to be stewards of creation.

  206. This is why he made us and put us in the created order.

  207. He put us there to joyfully unlock

  208. and discover this created order's potential,

  209. to unwrap its latent potencies and its treasures,

  210. to unwrap them like a gift that we would offer back to God.

  211. We were meant to sort of take our place in this created order

  212. and to tune it like an instrument

  213. so that it would sing the praises of its creator.

  214. But as a result of Adam's sin,

  215. and as a judgment on that sin,

  216. God subjected creation to futility.

  217. No longer would it yield its treasure,

  218. now it would produce thorns and thistles.

  219. And Adam and his descendants would extract the good from it

  220. only by painful toil and sweat

  221. until death claimed them

  222. and they returned to the dust from which they had been taken.

  223. What does all this mean?

  224. Friends, it means that the present futility

  225. futility of the created order

  226. from the worst of natural disasters

  227. to the weeds that choke out

  228. your measly little vegetable garden

  229. are a signpost.

  230. The futility of creation is a signpost

  231. declaring that our relationship with God

  232. has been broken because of sin

  233. and desperately needs to be repaired.

  234. The futility of creation is like a giant hedge

  235. on our self-centered path.

  236. Because as fallen humans,

  237. we want to live life without God, right?

  238. We want to be our own lords

  239. and our own saviors.

  240. We don't want anything to do with God.

  241. Thank you very much.

  242. We want to seek our joy and life and peace

  243. apart from God and apart from God's rule

  244. on our own two feet.

  245. We want to run things our own way.

  246. But in God's severe mercy to us,

  247. He subjects His good creation to futility

  248. against its own will

  249. so that we rebellious humans

  250. will be constantly reminded

  251. that our satisfaction can't be found

  252. in created things,

  253. but only in our Creator.

  254. So that we would be constantly reminded

  255. that we aren't in control

  256. and we can't be the master of our own destiny.

  257. And that if we keep trying,

  258. a much worse fate awaits us,

  259. an eternity without God.

  260. So friends, if you sometimes get the sense

  261. that this world isn't the way it's supposed to be,

  262. that all the evil and suffering and chaos

  263. isn't how it should be,

  264. then there is a sense in which you are utterly right.

  265. But are you listening rightly to the signpost

  266. that creation was subjected to futility?

  267. That's point number one,

  268. that the present state of the world

  269. is not the way it was originally supposed to be.

  270. But here's point number two,

  271. the present state of the world

  272. is not the way it will always be.

  273. Look again at verse 20.

  274. For the creation was subjected to futility,

  275. not willingly,

  276. but because of him who subjected it in hope.

  277. God subjected creation to futility

  278. as a judicial sentence on Adam's sin,

  279. but God did so in hope.

  280. When God struck the ground,

  281. he did so with a plan,

  282. with a purpose,

  283. with a goal in mind.

  284. God subjected creation to futility

  285. in redemptive hope.

  286. What is the future?

  287. This hope that God has in store for creation.

  288. Look at verse 21,

  289. in hope that the creation will be set free.

  290. One day, Paul says,

  291. creation itself will be set free.

  292. It'll be liberated.

  293. Its shackles will come off.

  294. Its chains will be broken.

  295. And what is it going to be set free from?

  296. The creation will be set free from

  297. its bondage to corruption.

  298. That word corruption here means

  299. decay and decline

  300. and disintegration.

  301. Of course, yes,

  302. there is now still amazing beauty in the world.

  303. There is now still life and birth

  304. and growth and joy,

  305. but none of these present graces

  306. escape the cycle of decay

  307. and disease and death now, do they?

  308. Creation is enslaved to futility,

  309. to disintegration,

  310. but not forever.

  311. One day, it will be set free

  312. from the tyranny of decay.

  313. That's what it will be set free from.

  314. What will it be set free for?

  315. Verse 21 again,

  316. the creation will be set free

  317. from its bondage to corruption

  318. and obtain the freedom

  319. of the glory of the children of God.

  320. And it's here.

  321. It's right here in this very moment.

  322. This is the moment

  323. when we step out of the forest trail

  324. and onto the cliff's edge.

  325. This is where we get the breathtaking view.

  326. This is what, as verse 19 says,

  327. creation is waiting for

  328. with eager longing.

  329. Paul says the whole created order

  330. is standing on tiptoe,

  331. stretching its neck,

  332. craning forward.

  333. That's the image of eager longing

  334. in verse 19.

  335. Creation is straining out its neck

  336. to see with eager expectation.

  337. What is it eagerly expecting?

  338. What is it yearning for?

  339. What is it waiting for?

  340. For the revealing of the sons of God.

  341. Or as verse 21 puts it,

  342. for the glory of the children of God.

  343. So friends,

  344. if you've come to put your trust in Christ,

  345. if you've put your faith in Him,

  346. and you are a daughter,

  347. you are a son of God,

  348. and this verse is about you.

  349. In Christ,

  350. you have become one of God's children,

  351. and God's purpose,

  352. God's plan,

  353. God's supreme hope for creation

  354. is bound up with you.

  355. When the children are revealed in glory,

  356. it will bring all creation with them.

  357. When Christ returns in this old age,

  358. finally gives way to the age to come,

  359. when the sun comes up

  360. and drives away the darkness forever,

  361. on that day,

  362. all of God's children will be seen

  363. as they truly are in Christ.

  364. We will be raised imperishable,

  365. incorruptible,

  366. and we will take our place

  367. with Christ as heirs,

  368. as the regents of creation

  369. God originally made us to be.

  370. And then,

  371. as the sons and daughters of God

  372. take their place,

  373. at long last,

  374. creation will be set free.

  375. And you just thought

  376. you were coming to church.

  377. This is how it was meant to be, friends.

  378. You see, Adam,

  379. Adam,

  380. as God's image bearer,

  381. was meant

  382. to lead creation

  383. into glory.

  384. Adam was meant to be

  385. at the head of the train,

  386. leading the procession

  387. of creation

  388. into the never-ending joy

  389. of God.

  390. Creation from the very start

  391. had a direction,

  392. and Adam was the one.

  393. Humanity were the ones

  394. who were supposed

  395. to take it there.

  396. But Adam failed.

  397. And we've all continued

  398. to fail after him.

  399. Yet,

  400. where Adam failed,

  401. Christ has succeeded.

  402. That through his perfect life.

  403. Do you think they were just

  404. magic tricks

  405. that Christ came,

  406. healing creation in his wake

  407. during his earthly ministry?

  408. In his life,

  409. he was showing us

  410. that he'd come

  411. to set creation free

  412. from its bondage to decay.

  413. But how would he ultimately do it?

  414. In death,

  415. he would destroy death.

  416. He would bear the curse

  417. of Adam,

  418. and he would bear the curse

  419. of creation,

  420. and he would go down

  421. and swallow it whole.

  422. And three days later,

  423. he would rise.

  424. And a new creation

  425. would begin.

  426. And friends,

  427. through faith,

  428. by his Spirit,

  429. those who respond

  430. to the call of God

  431. that goes out

  432. with the proclamation

  433. of the gospel,

  434. those who respond

  435. to Christ in faith

  436. and put their trust in him,

  437. are made,

  438. his brothers and sisters,

  439. are made,

  440. co-heirs with him.

  441. And we,

  442. along with Christ,

  443. will lead,

  444. once again,

  445. the procession

  446. of the created world

  447. into the never-ending

  448. joy of God.

  449. And it won't end.

  450. That's what never-ending means.

  451. Because if God is an

  452. infinitely majestic God,

  453. then there must be

  454. infinite ways

  455. in which we,

  456. as his creatures,

  457. can enjoy it

  458. and explore it

  459. and display it.

  460. Do you see the vision here?

  461. God isn't going to

  462. scrap this world,

  463. annihilate it,

  464. and start over.

  465. He's got a much

  466. deeper plan than that.

  467. He's going to liberate it.

  468. He's going to take

  469. this material world

  470. and it's going to be

  471. set free and transformed.

  472. And this is something

  473. that the New Testament

  474. says again and again

  475. and again.

  476. This isn't just Paul

  477. being a weirdo.

  478. This is what the New Testament

  479. says again and again.

  480. Jesus himself spoke

  481. of the new birth

  482. of the world

  483. at his second coming.

  484. Peter talked about

  485. the restoration

  486. of all things.

  487. Paul elsewhere

  488. will talk about

  489. the reconciliation

  490. of all things.

  491. And John will speak

  492. of the new heavens

  493. and the new earth

  494. where God dwells

  495. with his people.

  496. And we don't just see it

  497. in the New Testament,

  498. we see it in the Old Testament.

  499. The Psalms speak

  500. of creation clapping

  501. their hands

  502. and rejoicing

  503. when God comes to judge.

  504. We read it earlier.

  505. Elizabeth read it for us.

  506. Did you get an echo

  507. of creation set free

  508. from its bondage

  509. to decay

  510. in that Psalm

  511. at the end?

  512. Isaiah says

  513. that God will one day

  514. create a new heaven

  515. and a new earth

  516. and out of the desert

  517. will come streams

  518. of water

  519. and ferocious

  520. poisonous animals

  521. will end up laying down

  522. in peace.

  523. Death,

  524. disease,

  525. decay

  526. will be forever cast off.

  527. Isaiah says

  528. it's like a sheet

  529. that's been laid over us,

  530. like a shroud

  531. that's come down,

  532. a veil.

  533. But he says

  534. one day

  535. it will be torn off

  536. and on the mountain

  537. of God

  538. will be a feast

  539. of rich food

  540. and wine

  541. for us to enjoy

  542. forevermore.

  543. God's material creation

  544. will be redeemed

  545. and glorified

  546. because God's children

  547. will be redeemed

  548. and glorified.

  549. Now,

  550. if you're sitting there

  551. speculating

  552. how on earth

  553. that's going to happen,

  554. how these molecules

  555. are going to make

  556. those molecules,

  557. well,

  558. I think it's probably best

  559. to let God

  560. work out all the details

  561. of transforming this world

  562. into the world to come.

  563. There's going to be continuity

  564. and discontinuity.

  565. Clearly,

  566. what God has in store

  567. is beyond our imaginations.

  568. Yet,

  569. what's in store?

  570. This glimpse we're given

  571. is meant

  572. to start engaging

  573. our hearts now.

  574. It's meant

  575. to instill in us

  576. a sense

  577. of the incomparable

  578. glory to come

  579. so that all

  580. of our present suffering

  581. can be considered

  582. in the right perspective.

  583. And our third

  584. and last point

  585. is meant to do

  586. that very thing

  587. to help reframe

  588. our perspective

  589. on present suffering.

  590. If our first point,

  591. if Paul's sort of

  592. first point

  593. looked to the past

  594. when God subjected

  595. creation to futility

  596. and this next point,

  597. the second point

  598. sort of looked ahead

  599. to when creation

  600. will be liberated

  601. from its bondage

  602. to decay,

  603. Paul now brings us

  604. back to the present

  605. in verse 22.

  606. He comes back

  607. to the here and now.

  608. in creation,

  609. he says,

  610. is groaning.

  611. And we hear it,

  612. don't we?

  613. We feel it,

  614. groaning.

  615. But you see,

  616. this groaning

  617. isn't the meaningless

  618. groan

  619. of futility

  620. that it will never end.

  621. And this groan

  622. isn't the groan

  623. of despair

  624. in the face

  625. of disease

  626. and decay.

  627. No,

  628. what does Paul say?

  629. This is the groan

  630. of a mother

  631. in labor.

  632. The whole creation

  633. has been groaning

  634. together

  635. in the pains

  636. of childbirth

  637. until now.

  638. Now,

  639. you can probably guess

  640. that I have not

  641. given birth,

  642. but I have been

  643. present for three.

  644. And I think

  645. it is a safe

  646. assumption

  647. to say that

  648. childbirth

  649. is a painful

  650. process.

  651. Excruciating

  652. and exhausting.

  653. It takes

  654. the whole of you

  655. and it lays

  656. you down

  657. in pain.

  658. But in the end,

  659. it's exhilarating,

  660. is it not?

  661. At the end

  662. of the day,

  663. the pain

  664. of childbirth

  665. is not worth

  666. comparing

  667. to the joy

  668. of holding

  669. a new child

  670. in your arms.

  671. I have never

  672. seen

  673. someone

  674. move

  675. from

  676. excruciating

  677. pain

  678. to limitless

  679. joy

  680. in such

  681. a second

  682. as when

  683. my children

  684. were born.

  685. And Paul

  686. says,

  687. friends,

  688. the world

  689. in which we live

  690. is not a

  691. random,

  692. directionless

  693. mass

  694. of atoms

  695. fluttering

  696. this way

  697. and that.

  698. It's the

  699. good creation

  700. of a good

  701. God

  702. who,

  703. yes,

  704. subjected it

  705. to futility,

  706. but did so

  707. in hope

  708. that one day

  709. it would be

  710. set free

  711. when Christ

  712. and all the

  713. children of God

  714. are revealed

  715. and God

  716. gives birth

  717. to a new

  718. world

  719. that fulfills

  720. the deepest

  721. longings

  722. and intentions

  723. that this one

  724. was always

  725. meant to

  726. fulfill.

  727. I mean,

  728. goodness gracious

  729. friends,

  730. why do we

  731. as human beings

  732. still have an

  733. impulse to

  734. make art

  735. and music?

  736. Why do we

  737. still have an

  738. impulse to

  739. wake up in

  740. the morning

  741. and go to

  742. our jobs?

  743. Why are

  744. any of us

  745. crazy enough

  746. to have

  747. children given

  748. the present

  749. state of

  750. the planet?

  751. it?

  752. Why would

  753. you bring

  754. children into

  755. this world?

  756. Because you

  757. and all,

  758. you and I

  759. know

  760. that God

  761. subjected it

  762. to futility

  763. and hope

  764. and the

  765. suffering

  766. that we

  767. see now

  768. is not

  769. the final

  770. word.

  771. They're the

  772. birth pains

  773. pointing ahead.

  774. They're

  775. excruciating.

  776. They're

  777. exhausting.

  778. But one

  779. day,

  780. they will

  781. give way

  782. to joy.

  783. But here's

  784. where the

  785. rubber hits

  786. the road,

  787. friends.

  788. If you're

  789. going to

  790. be a part

  791. of that

  792. renewed

  793. creation,

  794. and all

  795. of us

  796. are beckoned

  797. in,

  798. if you're

  799. going to

  800. be a part

  801. of that

  802. renewal

  803. of all

  804. things,

  805. then you

  806. yourself

  807. need to

  808. be renewed.

  809. And that

  810. brings us

  811. to the

  812. heart of

  813. the gospel,

  814. that God

  815. wanting to

  816. create

  817. and recreate

  818. His people

  819. so that they

  820. might lead

  821. creation into

  822. glory,

  823. in love,

  824. sent His

  825. one and only

  826. Son into

  827. the world,

  828. who died

  829. in the place

  830. of sinners

  831. to take away

  832. the penalty

  833. of sin

  834. that we

  835. deserve,

  836. and who

  837. rose again

  838. on the third

  839. day to give

  840. us new

  841. life.

  842. You see,

  843. how was it

  844. that God

  845. could subject

  846. creation to

  847. futility and

  848. hope?

  849. How would

  850. God save

  851. creation from

  852. the futility

  853. that He

  854. sentenced it

  855. to?

  856. How would

  857. God rescue

  858. creation from

  859. Himself?

  860. Where did

  861. the hope

  862. spring from?

  863. God save

  864. Him?

  865. It sprang from

  866. the eternal

  867. counsels of

  868. our triune

  869. God,

  870. because God

  871. the Father

  872. and God

  873. the Son

  874. and God

  875. the Holy

  876. Spirit had

  877. planned from

  878. eternity a

  879. work of

  880. redemption,

  881. that where sin

  882. abounded,

  883. grace would

  884. much more

  885. abound,

  886. and where

  887. death reigned,

  888. life would

  889. give way to

  890. final victory.

  891. from the

  892. moment God

  893. struck the

  894. ground,

  895. He already

  896. knew that He

  897. was going to

  898. strike His

  899. Son so that

  900. we could all

  901. be set free,

  902. so that everyone

  903. who comes and

  904. takes hold of

  905. Christ would

  906. have their guilt

  907. of sin

  908. released,

  909. their hearts

  910. made new,

  911. and they might

  912. be adopted into

  913. God's family and

  914. made heirs of

  915. this new creation

  916. hope that God

  917. has always had.

  918. So friends,

  919. if you hear

  920. God's voice,

  921. don't harden

  922. your heart.

  923. Place your

  924. trust in the

  925. One who came

  926. in love for

  927. you.

  928. To all who

  929. received Him,

  930. who believed in

  931. His name,

  932. He gave them

  933. the right to

  934. become the

  935. children of

  936. God,

  937. and if

  938. children,

  939. then heirs,

  940. heirs of

  941. God,

  942. and co-heirs

  943. with Christ.

  944. And here is

  945. the good news

  946. for all of

  947. those who

  948. have trusted

  949. in Christ.

  950. God's going

  951. to renew

  952. all of

  953. creation.

  954. This whole

  955. thing is going

  956. to be transformed,

  957. set free from

  958. decay,

  959. and we will

  960. enjoy it

  961. forever,

  962. and God

  963. will give us

  964. new bodies

  965. and minds

  966. and hearts

  967. to be able

  968. to enjoy it.

  969. But the best

  970. thing of all

  971. is this,

  972. all of the

  973. ways in which

  974. creation was

  975. meant to

  976. display God's

  977. glory will be

  978. repaired.

  979. When creation's

  980. futility gives

  981. way to the

  982. liberty and the

  983. glory of the

  984. children of God,

  985. we will then

  986. taste and see

  987. that the Lord

  988. is good in

  989. ways that you

  990. and I right

  991. now can't

  992. imagine.

  993. Friends,

  994. if a sunset

  995. thrills your

  996. soul,

  997. imagine what

  998. that sunset

  999. will be like

  1000. when creation

  1001. is set free

  1002. from its

  1003. bondage to

  1004. decay.

  1005. If the

  1006. massive redwoods

  1007. of California

  1008. speak of the

  1009. majesty of God,

  1010. if the stars

  1011. and constellations

  1012. and galaxies

  1013. declare how holy

  1014. and powerful

  1015. God is,

  1016. if the waves

  1017. pounding against

  1018. the shore echo

  1019. God's faithfulness

  1020. and greatness

  1021. and steadfast

  1022. love that just

  1023. keep coming

  1024. and coming

  1025. and coming

  1026. and don't

  1027. stop.

  1028. Imagine what

  1029. God will show

  1030. us of Himself

  1031. in the new

  1032. heavens and

  1033. the new earth

  1034. when we can

  1035. enjoy it with

  1036. totally new

  1037. bodies and

  1038. selves.

  1039. then we'll

  1040. see that the

  1041. sufferings of

  1042. this present

  1043. age really

  1044. aren't worth

  1045. comparing to

  1046. the glory that

  1047. is to be

  1048. revealed unto

  1049. us.

  1050. So hold on,

  1051. brothers and

  1052. sisters.

  1053. Hold on.

  1054. One day an

  1055. incomparable

  1056. glory is coming

  1057. and you will be

  1058. at the front of

  1059. the procession

  1060. with Christ,

  1061. your King.

  1062. Amen.

  1063. Amen.

  1064. Let's pray.

  1065. Father, we need

  1066. Your Spirit to

  1067. come and

  1068. testify to

  1069. our hearts

  1070. that we are

  1071. indeed Your

  1072. children.

  1073. And we need

  1074. Your Spirit to

  1075. come and make

  1076. this vision of

  1077. glory real to

  1078. us.

  1079. Oh God, we've

  1080. lived in the

  1081. futility of this

  1082. creation for so

  1083. long that sometimes

  1084. it just seems like

  1085. a dream.

  1086. And yet,

  1087. Holy Spirit,

  1088. bring us back to

  1089. the resurrection

  1090. of Christ, to

  1091. the conquest of

  1092. death, to the

  1093. beginning of the

  1094. new creation in

  1095. Him.

  1096. And Lord, help us

  1097. to see and to

  1098. trust Your Word that

  1099. one day that will

  1100. be true of all

  1101. things and we in

  1102. Christ with it at

  1103. its head.

  1104. And Lord, help us

  1105. apart that, in the

  1106. midst of suffering,

  1107. to hold these

  1108. things tightly, we

  1109. pray.

  1110. In Jesus' name,

  1111. Amen.

  1112. Amen.

  1113. So I'll stand.

1114. All creatures of our God and King

1115. Lift up your voice and with us sing

  1116. Oh, praise Him, hallelujah

1117. Thou burning sun with golden dew

1118. Thou silver moon is often lean

1119. Oh, praise Him, oh, praise Him

  1120. Hallelujah, hallelujah

1121. Now rushing with my heart so strong

1122. Ye clouds that sail in heaven alone

  1123. Oh, praise Him, hallelujah

1124. Thou rising moon in praise rejoin

1125. The lights of evening fire roar

1126. Oh, praise Him, oh, praise Him

  1127. Hallelujah, hallelujah

  1128. Hallelujah, hallelujah

1129. And let all things their Creator bless

1130. And worship Him in humbleness

1131. Oh, praise Him, oh, praise Him

1132. Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son

1133. And praise the Spirit three in one

1134. Oh, praise Him, oh, praise Him

  1135. Hallelujah, hallelujah

  1136. Hallelujah, hallelujah

  1137. Hallelujah

  1138. ¡Oh, praise Him, hallelujah!

  1139. Hallelujah!

  1140. Hallelujah, hallelujah

  1141. we

  1142. praise praise our father

  1143. Oh

1144. Well friends feel free to stick around up here for fellowship.

  1145. There's coffee hour downstairs.

1146. Feel free to meet someone new and encourage one another down there.

1147. If you would like to
