  1. I think that's right.

  2. So, I'm going to read verses 28 to 30, but this morning we are particularly looking at

  3. verses 29 and 30 as we continue in our series through this chapter.

  4. The Apostle Paul says this, and we know that for those who love God, all things work together

  5. for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.

  6. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in

  7. order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers.

  8. And those whom He predestined, He also called, and those whom He called, He also justified,

  9. and those whom He justified, He also glorified.

  10. Who is in control?

  11. Who am I, and where is my life going?

  12. Those are perhaps three of the most basic and profound human questions that we all ask ourselves

  13. at one time or another.

  14. But I think if we're honest with ourselves, many of us aren't quite sure how to answer

  15. those questions.

  16. And so, we live with an underlying sense of anxiety.

  17. Some of us live with anxiety about our past, maybe because of trauma or rejection that we've

  18. experienced, maybe because of failures that we fear will come back to haunt us, or we might

  19. even look back on our past successes, but we feel like they're never quite enough.

  20. There's always something more that we need to be working on, striving towards in order to

  21. prove to the world that we're still worthy of recognition.

  22. Some of us live with anxiety in the present.

  23. We live in a world that's rapidly changing.

  24. If you can remember, 10 years ago, no one owned a smartphone.

  25. Now we feel like we can't live a moment without them.

  26. And we live today with the fear of missing out.

  27. We try to stay constantly connected, but ironically, we're becoming lonelier than ever.

  28. Since the 1980s, the percentage of American adults who say they're lonely has doubled from

  29. 20 to 40 percent.

  30. And perhaps it's not a coincidence that the percentage of Americans diagnosed with anxiety

  31. disorders has steadily increased as well in the same time period.

  32. We have anxiety about the past, about the present, and even as we look toward the future, whether

  33. it's anxiety about our career, about our health, about our children, about aging parents and

  34. relatives, about what kind of legacy we'll leave behind, about death, and what comes after.

  35. Is there anything we can say with confidence about the future?

  36. You know, in this morning's passage, the Apostle Paul sounds a ringing note of assurance in the

  37. midst of our anxieties.

  38. Paul acknowledges in this chapter that we face afflictions, present sufferings, that we have

  39. weaknesses internally and emotionally, physically, spiritually, that we live in the midst of a world

  40. that groans under bondage to corruption and decay.

  41. But Paul says there's one thing of which we can be confident, that God is steadily carrying out His

  42. eternal purpose in the lives of everyone who loves Him.

  43. Last week, we looked at verse 28, a wonderful verse where Paul says that all things work together

  44. for good, under God's providence for the good of those who love Him.

  45. And the second half of that verse reminds us that everyone who loves God has also been called

  46. according to God's purpose.

  47. In verses 29 and 30, open a window, give us a glimpse behind the curtain into God's unchanging

  48. purpose from eternity past through the present age and to eternity future.

  49. There are five verbs in verses 29 and 30 that form an unbroken chain.

  50. Two of them refer to God's purpose from eternity past, foreknown and predestined.

  51. Two of them refer to God's purpose as it's carried out in the present age, called and justified,

  52. and one of them refers to God's purpose that stretches into eternity future, glorified.

  53. Now, before we look at each of these verbs in turn, I want you to notice that the subject

  54. of all five verbs is the same, God.

  55. And the object of all five verbs is also the same, those.

  56. It doesn't say that God foreknew one group of people and then decided to predestine a different

  57. group of people and then called half of those and justified a few of those and glorified somebody

  58. else.

  59. No.

  60. It says, those whom God foreknew, He also predestined and called and justified and glorified.

  61. God's purpose is carried out consistently, steadily, unswervingly from eternity past through

  62. the present age into eternity future.

  63. And in the end, we'll see that that's why we can find rest from our anxieties.

  64. That's why we can be assured, we can be confident in God's unchanging love.

  65. That's why we can persevere to the end with steadfastness, because God is steadfast in carrying

  66. out His purpose.

  67. One commentator put it this way.

  68. He wrote, in order to show the branches, that's us, that they are indeed to blossom and bear fruit,

  69. Paul demonstrates in these verses, that the tree is securely planted and well-rooted.

  70. So, that's what we're going to consider this morning, the tree on which we depend,

  71. of God's steady and unchanging purpose from eternity past through the present age and into

  72. eternity to come.

  73. Now, the last two weeks, we focused on God's work in the present age, the Holy Spirit helping

  74. us in our weakness through prayer, and God working all the things that we experience in

  75. our life together for our good.

  76. The two weeks before that, we looked at the future, about the hope that we have for the

  77. redemption of our bodies and the renewal of all creation.

  78. So, I'm going to spend the bulk of our time today on the first point, God's purpose from

  79. eternity past, and then more briefly address how that carries out in the present age.

  80. And the future, simply because we've addressed those aspects in some other sermons recently.

  81. But they're all connected from God's purpose from eternity past to eternity future.

  82. So, first, first point, God's purpose from eternity past.

  83. Those He foreknew, He also predestined.

  84. Oh boy, here we go.

  85. Right?

  86. These two words, foreknowledge and predestination, have been the subject of much controversy and

  87. some confusion in the history of the church.

  88. Now, to give you a bit of a sense of my background, I was brought up in a church that for the most

  89. part ignored or ridiculed the idea of predestination.

  90. Not that ugly idea.

  91. Then I came to college and started attending another church that strongly affirmed predestination,

  92. and one of the pastors even basically told me that if I couldn't agree with their view

  93. on predestination, I shouldn't become a member of their church.

  94. So, for about nine months during my sophomore year of college, I was inwardly obsessed with

  95. predestination.

  96. I couldn't figure out what to make of it.

  97. It kept me up at night, turning the concepts over and over in my mind with no satisfying resolution.

  98. It bothered me even at church.

  99. I found it hard to concentrate in worship and during sermons because my mind would go there

  100. and the wheels would start spinning and never really gain traction.

  101. But I told hardly anyone because I thought surely no one else can relate to such an esoteric

  102. struggle.

  103. Now, as a side note, if you are wrestling with some kind of doubt or question or temptation

  104. or besetting sin, and if you think that no other Christian can ever relate to what you're

  105. going through, that is always a lie from the devil.

  106. Don't believe it.

  107. Don't isolate yourself from the body of believers and fight your battles all alone.

  108. God's given us each other, and He sustains us by His grace through our fellowship with one

  109. another, imperfect as we are.

  110. Now, one of the things that was actually helpful, one of the ways that God did work through the

  111. body of Christ in my life at that time, was a few of us had started going to the homeless

  112. shelter and talking with people there about Jesus.

  113. You might think, what in the world does that have to do with predestination?

  114. Well, it didn't help me figure out predestination, but it got me out of my own head.

  115. And that's a blessing to any Yale undergraduate.

  116. Amen?

  117. Every once in a while at least.

  118. Talking with the people in the homeless shelter reminded me of the gospel that I'd always known,

  119. that Jesus Christ died for sinners, and that His blood was sufficient to save and powerful

  120. to transform anyone who would come to Him in faith.

  121. So, let me say this.

  122. The doctrines of foreknowledge and predestination are not the forefront of the gospel message.

  123. Okay?

  124. They're not the key above all else to understanding the message of the Bible.

  125. There's no book of the Bible whose main theme above everything else is God's foreknowledge

  126. and predestination.

  127. In the drama of Scripture, they're more like backstage realities, things that are well known

  128. to the director but aren't in clear and full view of the audience.

  129. And yet, we occasionally get a glimpse into them in Scriptures like these.

  130. And this Scripture, like every other one, is given for our good.

  131. So, let's dig in.

  132. Verse 29.

  133. Foreknowledge.

  134. Sometimes this word can mean simply knowing about something ahead of time.

  135. And so, some people have said God's foreknowledge refers to God knowing in advance who will choose

  136. to believe in and obey Him of their own accord.

  137. So, in other words, the verse would mean those whose faith and obedience God knew about beforehand,

  138. those ones He predestined to glory.

  139. So, in that view, God's predestination depends completely on our free choice.

  140. It's all up to us.

  141. But there are problems with that view.

  142. For one thing, it's just not what the verse says.

  143. The verse doesn't say those whose faith God foreknew or those whose obedience God foreknew.

  144. It says those whom God foreknew.

  145. God foreknew people, not choices or actions.

  146. When this verse says God foreknew us, it doesn't just mean God knew something about us.

  147. It means that long before we were born, He knew us in an intimate and personal way.

  148. He committed Himself to us and set us apart for Himself.

  149. And this is how the word is used in many other places in Scripture.

  150. Romans 11 verse 2 says,

    Romans 11:2

  151. God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew.

  152. In the Old Testament, God said to the prophet Jeremiah,

  153. Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.

  154. It doesn't just mean I knew about you.

  155. It doesn't just mean I knew you would exist one day.

  156. It means I've chosen you and called you.

  157. I set you apart to be a prophet to the nations.

  158. Jesus Himself actually uses the same language of being known by God

  159. in a rather scary warning at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.

  160. Jesus says that some people who call Him Lord but never obey Him

  161. will one day hear Him say to them,

  162. I never knew you.

  163. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.

  164. He's saying, I never knew you.

  165. In other words, I never enjoyed a genuine, personal, intimate relationship with you

  166. and you with me.

  167. In many places in the Bible, to know someone means to be intimately related to them,

  168. to know them inside and out.

  169. The Hebrew word to know is sometimes used to describe the exclusive intimacy

  170. shared by a husband and wife who have promised themselves to each other in love.

  171. So, when it says God foreknew His people from eternity past,

  172. it's as if a parent is talking to their child and saying,

  173. son or daughter, long before you were conscious,

  174. long before you were born into the world or adopted into our family,

  175. even before you were conceived in the womb,

  176. you were wanted.

  177. We wanted you.

  178. We sought you out.

  179. You were foreknown and foreloved.

  180. When you became part of our family,

  181. we gave you our name,

  182. our family name.

  183. Not as a crown for your achievements,

  184. not as a response to your performance,

  185. not for a probationary period of time to see how you turn out,

  186. but to say that you belong

  187. because you were foreknown and foreloved.

  188. That's what God says to every one of us.

  189. I knew you before the beginning of time,

  190. before you were aware of me,

  191. before you,

  192. certainly before you chose me.

  193. You were foreknown,

  194. pre-loved,

  195. from eternity past.

  196. And that's what God says to every one of His children

  197. who's been adopted into His family

  198. through faith in His Son.

  199. Paul goes on to say,

  200. those whom God foreknew,

  201. He also predestined.

  202. Now, for some of us,

  203. when we hear the word predestined,

  204. we think of the idea of fate.

  205. But these are not the same thing.

  206. Fatalism means living in a world

  207. where your destiny is determined by the stars

  208. or by something else that's impersonal

  209. and ultimately random.

  210. Biblical faith is living in a universe

  211. that is ruled by an ever-present

  212. and living and purposeful

  213. and personal God.

  214. Fatalism says,

  215. whatever will be, will be.

  216. So, it doesn't really matter what I do.

  217. And in the end,

  218. I'm not really responsible for what happens.

  219. But that's not what the Bible says.

  220. The Bible affirms both

  221. God's complete sovereignty

  222. and human responsibility.

  223. It's not an either-or,

  224. it's both-and.

  225. So, let me give you a few examples.

  226. Look in this chapter,

  227. look at verse 23.

  228. In this verse,

  229. in the middle of the verse,

  230. it says,

  231. we ourselves,

  232. we groan inwardly

  233. as we wait eagerly

  234. for the redemption of our bodies.

  235. But then look down at verse 26.

  236. The end of verse 26,

  237. it says,

  238. the Spirit,

  239. the Holy Spirit of God Himself

  240. intercedes for us

  241. with groanings too deep for words.

  242. Now, when you put these two verses together,

  243. what is it saying?

  244. It's saying,

  245. the groanings that come

  246. from the very depth of our own heart

  247. are simultaneously the groans

  248. produced by the Holy Spirit of God

  249. who dwells within us.

  250. Or you can look ahead

  251. to Romans 9 and 10.

  252. Now, Romans chapter 9

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  253. emphasizes God's sovereignty.

  254. If you look at Romans 9, verse 18,

    Romans 9:18

  255. it's about as strong a statement

  256. as you can get.

  257. God has mercy on whomever He wills,

  258. and He hardens whomever He wills.

  259. But then if you go on to chapter 10,

  260. chapter 10 emphasizes human responsibility.

  261. If you look at chapter 10, verse 13,

  262. it says,

  263. everyone who calls on the name of the Lord

  264. will be saved.

  265. The end of the chapter, verse 21,

  266. He says,

  267. God's speaking to His people,

  268. saying,

  269. all day long,

  270. I've held out My hands

  271. to a disobedient and contrary people.

  272. God's sovereignty over everything

  273. and human responsibility.

  274. They're two hands,

  275. and they're not chopped off from each other.

  276. Two hands part of the same body.

  277. Or consider another example,

  278. 2 Corinthians 8, 16 and 17.

  279. Paul says this.

  280. He says,

  281. Thanks be to God

  282. who put into the heart of Titus

  283. the same earnest care I have for you.

  284. And then he goes on and says,

  285. For He not only accepted our appeal,

  286. but being Himself very earnest,

  287. He is going to you of His own accord.

  288. So, Paul says,

  289. in one verse,

  290. God put it into the heart of Titus

  291. to do what He's doing.

  292. And in the second verse,

  293. he says,

  294. Titus is going to you of His own accord.

  295. And that's not a contradiction.

  296. See, the Bible puts both of these things together.

  297. N.T. Wright puts it this way,

  298. Christian faith is wholeheartedly

  299. and responsibly answering the call

  300. of a sovereign God

  301. with love, gratitude, and obedience

  302. that comes from the depth of our own being

  303. and is simultaneously experienced

  304. as a response to a sovereignty,

  305. a compulsion even.

  306. Now, some of you might say,

  307. but I just don't see how both of these things

  308. can be true at the same time.

  309. It just doesn't…

  310. I can't put it together in my head.

  311. It doesn't make sense.

  312. But consider this.

  313. In the natural world,

  314. in the physical universe,

  315. we see paradoxes

  316. that we cannot fully resolve.

  317. Yet, they are undeniably real.

  318. For example,

  319. physicists tell us

  320. that light is both a wave

  321. and a particle.

  322. Now, it's very difficult,

  323. right?

  324. It's very difficult to explain,

  325. and I think even the PhD students

  326. in physics can affirm this,

  327. it's very difficult to explain

  328. how both of those things

  329. are true at the same time.

  330. But it's very well established

  331. that they are both true.

  332. If you study quantum mechanics,

  333. it just makes your head spin.

  334. It's not what anyone

  335. would have come up with

  336. on their own.

  337. But it's reality,

  338. strange as it may seem.

  339. And if the physical universe

  340. that scientists can study

  341. and examine operates

  342. in ways that are counterintuitive

  343. and hard, if not impossible,

  344. for our human minds

  345. to fully grasp,

  346. how much more mysterious

  347. and unfathomable

  348. and glorious

  349. are the ways

  350. of an infinite God

  351. as God interacts

  352. with His creation.

  353. You know,

  354. if you think about

  355. nearly every major

  356. Christian doctrine,

  357. it contains some mystery.

  358. The Trinity,

  359. one God

  360. in three persons.

  361. Jesus Christ,

  362. completely God,

  363. and yet He became

  364. completely human

  365. at the same time.

  366. And the interplay

  367. between God's

  368. complete sovereignty

  369. and our human responsibility.

  370. And when we probe

  371. the depths of these

  372. biblical teachings,

  373. it's meant to lead us

  374. to awe-filled worship.

  375. That's where Paul goes

  376. at the end of Romans 11

  377. Oh, the depth

  378. of the riches

  379. and wisdom

  380. and knowledge of God!

  381. How unsearchable

  382. are His judgments

  383. and how inscrutable

  384. His ways!

  385. For who has known

  386. the mind of the Lord

  387. or who has been

  388. His counselor?

  389. Who has ever given

  390. a gift to Him

  391. that He might be repaid?

  392. For from Him

  393. and to Him

  394. and through Him

  395. are all things.

  396. To Him be glory forever.

  397. Amen.

  398. You know,

  399. every time the Bible

  400. talks about God's

  401. predestination,

  402. His sovereign choice

  403. of us before

  404. the foundation

  405. of the world

  406. is for one of three purposes.

  407. First,

  408. it's to promote

  409. gratitude

  410. and praise to God.

  411. So, Ephesians 1

  412. says,

  413. God chose us

  414. in Christ

  415. before the foundation

  416. of the world

  417. that we might be

  418. to the praise

  419. of His glory,

  420. that we might

  421. praise Him

  422. for His amazing grace,

  423. that He has lavished

  424. upon us

  425. from eternity past.

  426. Second,

  427. it's to promote

  428. humility.

  429. That's one of the main

  430. emphases of Romans 9.

  431. Romans 9.20 says,

  432. Who are you,

  433. O man,

  434. to answer back to God?

  435. Will the clay

  436. say to the potter,

  437. why have you made

  438. me like this?

  439. It humbles us.

  440. The third purpose

  441. is to give assurance

  442. to suffering believers,

  443. and that's actually

  444. the main purpose

  445. of this text

  446. in the context

  447. of the middle

  448. of Romans 8.

  449. The whole section

  450. is talking about

  451. our present suffering

  452. and our future glory,

  453. and so verses 29 and 30

  454. are meant to reassure us.

  455. They're meant to reassure us

  456. in the midst

  457. of our suffering

  458. and looking to Christ

  459. that He's on our side

  460. and He's for us

  461. and we can trust Him.

  462. And He's been there

  463. all along.

  464. To know that we are

  465. predestined by God

  466. means to know

  467. that our lives

  468. have a destination.

  469. Isn't that what's

  470. in that word,

  471. predestination?

  472. It means we have

  473. a destination

  474. that we're going to.

  475. The Greek word

  476. is prohorizo.

  477. It's where we get

  478. the word horizon.

  479. It's a word that's meant

  480. to focus our attention

  481. on the goal,

  482. the destination

  483. that God has set out

  484. for us

  485. in the second half

  486. of verse 29

  487. tells us what that is,

  488. to be conformed

  489. to the image

  490. of His Son.

  491. Pastor Nick talked

  492. last week

  493. that this is the good

  494. that verse 28

  495. is talking about

  496. when it says,

  497. all things work together

  498. for good.

  499. What's that good?

  500. It's that we

  501. become more

  502. and more

  503. like Jesus Himself.

  504. He is the pattern,

  505. the imprint,

  506. the glory,

  507. everything the human race

  508. was originally intended

  509. to be.

  510. And we who believe

  511. in Him

  512. and belong to Him

  513. are being shaped,

  514. polished,

  515. melted down,

  516. smoothed out,

  517. sculpted,

  518. framed,

  519. cast into that

  520. master design.

  521. This has been

  522. God's plan

  523. and purpose

  524. from eternity past.

  525. Now,

  526. I want you to think

  527. for a moment

  528. about the process

  529. of creating

  530. a work of art.

  531. Because it says

  532. that that's what

  533. God is doing

  534. in conforming us

  535. to the image

  536. of His Son.

  537. It's the image

  538. of creating

  539. a work of beauty.

  540. Creating a work

  541. of art is messy.

  542. Have you ever

  543. walked into

  544. an art studio

  545. with a bunch

  546. of works in progress

  547. that looks neat

  548. and tidy?

  549. No!

  550. But the artist

  551. has a purpose

  552. in mind,

  553. right?

  554. Despite the apparent

  555. madness and chaos.

  556. And God is not

  557. above working

  558. through

  559. apparent madness

  560. and chaos

  561. to produce

  562. His masterpieces.

  563. Second,

  564. creating a work

  565. of art is intense.

  566. Think about

  567. glass blowing

  568. or wood turning

  569. or sculpture making

  570. or anything

  571. where you have

  572. to use a blowtorch

  573. on metal.

  574. Not for the faint

  575. of heart.

  576. Sometimes God

  577. brings us

  578. through fiery trials

  579. trials that feel

  580. intense

  581. through painful

  582. experiences

  583. not to destroy us

  584. but to refine us

  585. and to make us

  586. into something

  587. unimaginably beautiful

  588. that we would

  589. otherwise

  590. never become.

  591. Third,

  592. it's time-consuming.

  593. Think about a painting

  594. on a large canvas.

  595. Last summer

  596. before last,

  597. my family went

  598. to a museum

  599. in Ohio

  600. that contained

  601. a circular mural

  602. 265 feet long

  603. by 10 feet high

  604. chronicling the history

  605. of the Anabaptist movement.

  606. It was entirely

  607. the work

  608. of one man

  609. from Germany.

  610. It took him

  611. 14 years

  612. to do the background

  613. research,

  614. to plan out

  615. the sequence,

  616. and finally

  617. to paint the mural.

  618. And he did it

  619. all by himself

  620. the whole way.

  621. Now think about that.

  622. It's messy,

  623. it's intense,

  624. and it's time-consuming.

  625. Brothers and sisters,

  626. here's the point.

  627. The life and work

  628. that God

  629. has set before you

  630. may be

  631. all those things.

  632. It might be messy.

  633. Your life

  634. might feel

  635. chaotic

  636. and

  637. just

  638. disordered

  639. right now.

  640. It might feel

  641. intense

  642. and painful.

  643. It might be

  644. just long

  645. and drawn out.

  646. A time-consuming

  647. journey.

  648. But here's what

  649. this verse is saying.

  650. It's saying,

  651. long ago,

  652. God made

  653. a plan.

  654. And long ago,

  655. God envisioned

  656. the glorious

  657. destination

  658. that He is

  659. leading you

  660. towards

  661. every day

  662. by His Spirit.

  663. His purpose

  664. from eternity

  665. past is that

  666. you might

  667. come to be

  668. one of His

  669. masterpieces,

  670. reflecting

  671. the beautiful

  672. image

  673. of His Son,

  674. Jesus Christ.

  675. That you might

  676. be one of

  677. Christ's brothers

  678. or sisters

  679. forever.

  680. That He might

  681. be the firstborn

  682. among many.

  683. Another way

  684. you can think

  685. about this

  686. is God's

  687. purpose from

  688. eternity past

  689. was to have

  690. a big family.

  691. Now,

  692. God always

  693. had a perfect

  694. family.

  695. The Father,

  696. the Son,

  697. and the Holy

  698. Spirit.

  699. They were one

  700. happy family

  701. from all

  702. eternity,

  703. full of

  704. love and

  705. glory and

  706. power and

  707. wisdom and

  708. mutual understanding

  709. and mutually

  710. indwelling,

  711. utterly complete

  712. and unbroken,

  713. not lacking

  714. anything.

  715. But God

  716. didn't just

  717. want a perfect

  718. family,

  719. He wanted

  720. a big one.

  721. He intentionally

  722. chose to open

  723. His home to a

  724. vast multitude

  725. of children.

  726. Not temporarily,

  727. but forever.

  728. forever.

  729. And oh,

  730. that was a

  731. costly choice.

  732. Because God

  733. the Father,

  734. to make us

  735. His children,

  736. had to send

  737. His one and

  738. only Son

  739. into this

  740. world,

  741. to rescue us

  742. from sin

  743. and death

  744. and the devil

  745. that we had

  746. gotten ourselves

  747. into.

  748. And the

  749. eternal Son

  750. of God,

  751. Jesus Christ

  752. Himself,

  753. suffered and

  754. bled and

  755. died to make

  756. us His

  757. brothers and

  758. sisters.

  759. brothers.

  760. Talk about a

  761. brother who

  762. will sacrifice

  763. for you,

  764. who would

  765. die for you.

  766. You have

  767. one.

  768. And now God

  769. the Father has

  770. sent His very

  771. own Holy Spirit

  772. into each of

  773. our hearts

  774. to assure us

  775. that God is

  776. really our

  777. Father,

  778. that He will

  779. never leave

  780. us nor forsake

  781. us,

  782. that despite

  783. all the

  784. rejection we

  785. might have

  786. experienced

  787. and all the

  788. trauma that's

  789. in our past

  790. and all the

  791. craziness we

  792. might have

  793. gone through,

  794. that we can

  795. trust this

  796. God.

  797. Forever and

  798. ever.

  799. God's the

  800. ultimate adoptive

  801. parent.

  802. And He has a

  803. glorious destination

  804. for every one

  805. of His children

  806. who've been

  807. adopted through

  808. Christ.

  809. Forever.

  810. That's God's

  811. purpose from

  812. eternity past.

  813. But second,

  814. we see that God's

  815. purpose continues to

  816. be carried out in

  817. the present age.

  818. Those He

  819. predestined,

  820. He also called,

  821. and those He

  822. called,

  823. He also

  824. justified.

  825. Second Timothy

  826. 1.9 says a

  827. similar thing,

  828. God saved us

  829. and called us

  830. to a holy

  831. calling,

  832. not because of

  833. our works,

  834. but because of

  835. His own purpose

  836. and grace,

  837. which He gave

  838. us in Christ

  839. Jesus before

  840. the ages began.

  841. Again,

  842. it began before

  843. the ages,

  844. and it's now

  845. carried out in

  846. the present age.

  847. What does it

  848. mean to be

  849. called?

  850. Again,

  851. Pastor Nick

  852. talked about

  853. this last week

  854. when Paul talks

  855. about being

  856. called according

  857. to God's

  858. eternal purpose.

  859. He's not just

  860. talking about

  861. being invited

  862. externally,

  863. He's talking

  864. about being

  865. awakened

  866. internally

  867. to the truth

  868. through the

  869. conviction of

  870. the Holy Spirit

  871. brought into

  872. a saving

  873. relationship

  874. with Jesus

  875. Christ.

  876. If you look

  877. at Romans 4,

    Romans 4:17

  878. verse 17,

  879. it says,

  880. God gives

  881. life to the

  882. dead and

  883. calls into

  884. existence the

  885. things that do

  886. not exist.

  887. Isn't that

  888. amazing?

  889. when God

  890. calls us,

  891. we become

  892. a new

  893. creation in

  894. Christ.

  895. He breathed

  896. life into

  897. us where

  898. previously we

  899. were spiritually

  900. dead and

  901. unresponsive

  902. to God.

  903. Some of you

  904. have experienced

  905. this very

  906. distinctly.

  907. You can point

  908. to a time

  909. in your own

  910. life.

  911. You can look

  912. back and

  913. remember a

  914. time when you

  915. wanted nothing

  916. to do with

  917. God.

  918. You hated

  919. God.

  920. You were

  921. indifferent

  922. toward Him.

  923. You just

  924. wanted to be

  925. your own

  926. God.

  927. Or you were

  928. trying to use

  929. God for your

  930. own purposes.

  931. Rather than

  932. let Him use

  933. you for

  934. His.

  935. And then

  936. one day God

  937. through His

  938. Word called

  939. you to

  940. Himself.

  941. Maybe it was

  942. through a

  943. sermon that

  944. you heard,

  945. maybe a

  946. scripture you

  947. were reading

  948. that jumped

  949. off the

  950. page to

  951. you,

  952. maybe a

  953. Christian

  954. friend or

  955. even a

  956. stranger who

  957. shared the

  958. gospel of

  959. Jesus Christ

  960. with you,

  961. and whatever

  962. the means,

  963. God awakened

  964. you that

  965. day, and

  966. you realized

  967. your spiritual

  968. need, and

  969. you saw the

  970. beauty and

  971. sufficiency of

  972. Jesus Christ

  973. dying on the

  974. cross for

  975. your sins,

  976. covering them

  977. with His

  978. blood, rising

  979. from the dead

  980. victorious, and

  981. He poured the

  982. love of God

  983. into your

  984. heart through

  985. the Holy Spirit,

  986. and now you

  987. don't just

  988. believe that

  989. God is out

  990. there somewhere,

  991. you love Him

  992. because He

  993. first loved

  994. you.

  995. You've been

  996. called.

  997. Now, not

  998. every one of

  999. us can pinpoint

  1000. a moment when

  1001. that happened.

  1002. Some of us

  1003. can't remember a

  1004. time when we

  1005. didn't believe in

  1006. Jesus Christ as

  1007. our Savior and

  1008. Lord.

  1009. God called us to

  1010. Himself before

  1011. we even knew

  1012. what He was

  1013. doing.

  1014. And that's a

  1015. wonderful testimony

  1016. too.

  1017. Sometimes we

  1018. know it's

  1019. happened, but we

  1020. can't quite identify

  1021. when, right?

  1022. Some days the sun

  1023. rises with brilliance

  1024. and glory, and

  1025. other days it's

  1026. behind all the

  1027. clouds.

  1028. But either way, a

  1029. new day has

  1030. dawned.

  1031. Paul says in

  1032. Romans 1, verse 6

    Romans 1:6

  1033. and 7, you are

  1034. called to belong to

  1035. Jesus Christ.

  1036. Loved by God and

  1037. called to be

  1038. saints.

  1039. That word means

  1040. God's holy people.

  1041. You're called to

  1042. belong to Jesus and

  1043. to be His holy

  1044. people in the

  1045. world.

  1046. That's what it

  1047. means to be

  1048. called by God.

  1049. And Paul goes on,

  1050. those he called,

  1051. he also justified.

  1052. To be justified by

1053. God means to be in

  1054. right standing with

  1055. God, to be forgiven

1056. of our sins, that God

  1057. will never hold them

  1058. against us anymore.

  1059. That we're declared

  1060. righteous in His sight.

  1061. This is the main

1062. theme of Romans 3 and

  1063. 4.

  1064. If you read those

  1065. chapters, it talks

  1066. all about being

  1067. justified by God's

  1068. grace through faith

  1069. in the Lord Jesus

  1070. Christ.

  1071. And chapter 5 says

  1072. the result of being

  1073. justified by faith in

  1074. Christ is we have

  1075. peace with God.

  1076. That we stand in

  1077. God's grace and we

  1078. rejoice in the hope

  1079. of God's glory.

  1080. Have you experienced

  1081. those things?

  1082. the peace with God

  1083. knowing that your sins

  1084. have been forgiven and

  1085. paid for.

  1086. The hope of God's

  1087. glory, God's grace to

1088. sustain you and help you

  1089. stand in the present

  1090. day.

1091. This is how God carries

  1092. out His eternal purpose.

  1093. By calling people to

  1094. belong to Jesus and

  1095. justifying them through

  1096. their belief in Jesus.

  1097. Have you experienced

  1098. this?

1099. Have you been called and

  1100. justified?

1101. Have you come to believe

1102. in and belong to Jesus

  1103. Christ?

1104. Maybe for some of you,

  1105. you haven't.

  1106. You say, I don't yet

  1107. really believe in Jesus.

1108. Well, let me ask you,

  1109. why not?

1110. What is there that is

  1111. holding you back from

  1112. fully entrusting yourself

  1113. to Him?

1114. Maybe you're just starting to

  1115. learn what Christianity is

  1116. all about.

  1117. That's great.

  1118. Start by reading through

1119. one of the New Testament

  1120. Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke,

  1121. or John.

1122. Maybe talk about it with a

  1123. friend.

  1124. Keep coming to church.

1125. We want to help you

  1126. understand what Christianity

  1127. is all about.

  1128. It's ultimately about who

1129. Jesus is and what God has

1130. done through Him for us.

  1131. Maybe you have questions

  1132. or objections or concerns

1133. that you need to work

  1134. through.

1135. If you haven't already read

  1136. Tim Keller's book,

  1137. The Reason for God,

  1138. I highly recommend it.

1139. Now, he has another one

  1140. that's very thought-provoking

1141. called Making Sense of God.

  1142. Those are excellent resources

1143. if you want to read

  1144. something that goes into

  1145. some depth.

  1146. But maybe you're mostly…

  1147. Maybe you've worked

  1148. through some questions.

  1149. Maybe you've been coming

  1150. for some time,

  1151. and if you're honest

  1152. with yourself,

  1153. you're mostly persuaded

  1154. that Jesus probably was

1155. who He said He was.

  1156. That, yeah, He probably

1157. really was the Son of God,

  1158. but there's something else

  1159. that holds you back

  1160. from committing to Him.

  1161. What is that?

1162. Is it fear of being ridiculed

  1163. by others

1164. or disapproved of by others?

  1165. Is it pride?

  1166. I mean, every Christian

  1167. has to let go

1168. of the air of being

  1169. totally self-sufficient.

1170. Because isn't that at the heart

  1171. of what it means

  1172. to be a Christian

1173. is to admit that you're not?

  1174. Is it reluctance

  1175. to embrace the cost

  1176. of following Jesus?

  1177. There's always a cost.

  1178. It may look different

  1179. for each of us.

  1180. Let me challenge you

  1181. to ask,

1182. what is holding me back

  1183. from fully trusting Jesus?

  1184. And to address

  1185. whatever that is.

1186. You see, if you have come

  1187. to believe in Jesus

  1188. and belong to Jesus,

1189. that is not an accident.

  1190. You've entered into

  1191. a much bigger story

  1192. than you can imagine.

  1193. God's own story

  1194. that stretches

  1195. from eternity past

  1196. to eternity future.

  1197. God's purpose

  1198. and plan for you

  1199. and for every believer

  1200. in Jesus

  1201. began in eternity past.

  1202. His purpose will continue

  1203. into eternity future

  1204. beyond the farthest horizon

  1205. that your eye

  1206. can now glimpse

  1207. or your mind imagine.

1208. To use a very imperfect analogy

  1209. of what this means

  1210. to be called

  1211. and justified

  1212. and brought into

  1213. God's eternal purpose,

  1214. imagine that you get

1215. a check in the mail

  1216. for $10,000

  1217. along with a note

  1218. that you're receiving

  1219. this check

  1220. because you've been included

  1221. in a distant relative's will.

1222. And your immediate reaction is,

  1223. wow, how generous.

1224. I can pay off some debts,

1225. I can stash some in savings,

1226. I can buy a couple of things

  1227. that our family needs,

1228. and then the next month

  1229. another check arrives

  1230. for the same amount

  1231. from the same source.

  1232. And the next month,

  1233. and another,

  1234. and another,

  1235. and then you learn

  1236. that this relative

1237. has set up a college fund

  1238. that will provide

1239. for all your kids' education,

  1240. and they've left you

  1241. a vacation home

  1242. in the Adirondacks.

1243. You thought the first check

  1244. was pretty good.

  1245. An undeserved favor

  1246. from a generous

  1247. and thoughtful relative

  1248. who thought of you

  1249. in advance.

  1250. But now you see

  1251. that it was only

  1252. one small part

1253. of a much larger inheritance.

  1254. Only one small link

1255. in a chain of kindness.

  1256. And that's what Paul's saying

  1257. is true,

  1258. spiritually speaking,

1259. of every believer in Jesus.

1260. When you first come to Jesus,

  1261. there's joy,

  1262. and you experience

  1263. some of His blessings.

  1264. And then Paul's saying,

  1265. but there's even a larger,

1266. longer chain of God's kindness

  1267. and His thoughtfulness

  1268. from eternity past

  1269. to eternity future

  1270. that you've come into.

  1271. Do you see that?

  1272. Have you begun

  1273. to glimpse

  1274. God's steady

  1275. and eternal

  1276. and loving purpose

  1277. for you?

1278. It goes from eternity past

  1279. through the present age,

  1280. and finally we see

1281. it goes into eternity future.

  1282. Those He justified,

  1283. He also glorified.

  1284. Now the puzzling thing

  1285. about this word glorified

  1286. is that Paul's talking

  1287. about something

  1288. that hasn't happened yet.

  1289. And that's very clear

1290. from the rest of verse 18,

  1291. for example.

  1292. Paul says,

  1293. I consider the sufferings

  1294. of this present time

  1295. are not worth comparing

  1296. with the glory

1297. that is to be revealed to us.

  1298. He's talking about

  1299. the future glory

  1300. when Jesus comes again

1301. and we'll be glorified with Him.

  1302. But he uses

  1303. the same verb tense

  1304. he's used

  1305. for every other action

1306. in this chain of events.

  1307. In Greek,

1308. it's called the aoris tense.

  1309. It's used to speak

  1310. about a completed action.

  1311. Now what's the point?

  1312. Paul's not using…

  1313. it's not a grammar mistake.

  1314. The point is

  1315. God's promises

  1316. for the future

  1317. are as real

  1318. and as reliable

1319. as if they had already

  1320. taken place

  1321. in history.

1322. You can be as certain

1323. of them as you can

  1324. of things

  1325. that have already happened.

  1326. God is not…

  1327. because God is not

  1328. limited by time

  1329. just as He's not

  1330. limited by space.

1331. And so Paul can speak

  1332. of our future glorification

  1333. as a completed work

1334. even though we have not

  1335. yet experienced it.

  1336. God's purposes

  1337. are eternal,

  1338. steady,

  1339. and sure.

1340. And even if we can't yet see

  1341. how they're all

  1342. going to work out,

  1343. God can guarantee it.

  1344. One commentator

  1345. described this passage

  1346. as a golden chain

  1347. of interconnected

  1348. divine actions

  1349. leading to a climax,

  1350. our glorification,

1351. a series of divine initiatives

  1352. snowballing toward fullness,

  1353. a steady drumbeat

  1354. of God's unshakable purpose.

  1355. What God undertakes

1356. will ultimately come to pass.

  1357. God will complete

1358. the work He has begun.

  1359. God will complete

  1360. that's our confidence.

  1361. That's our assurance

  1362. in the midst

  1363. of everything within us

  1364. and everything around us

  1365. that makes us anxious

  1366. and afraid

  1367. and complacent

  1368. and discontent.

  1369. Paul says,

  1370. look to God's

  1371. eternal purpose.

  1372. Now,

  1373. these verses

  1374. are not saying

  1375. that our faith

  1376. or our obedience

  1377. are irrelevant

  1378. or unnecessary.

  1379. Paul speaks a lot

  1380. about faith

  1381. in Romans 1-4

1382. and a lot about obedience,

  1383. putting sin to death,

  1384. walking in the Spirit

  1385. in chapters 5-8.

  1386. But Paul wants

  1387. to remind us here

  1388. that in the end,

  1389. our salvation

  1390. and the destiny

  1391. of all creation

  1392. is not ultimately

  1393. in our hands.

  1394. It's not ultimately

  1395. dependent on us.

  1396. God is God

  1397. and His sovereign purpose

  1398. won't be thwarted.

  1399. Salvation comes

  1400. from the Lord.

  1401. You see,

  1402. if our salvation

  1403. ultimately depends

  1404. on how strong

  1405. or how pure

  1406. or how enduring

  1407. our faith is,

  1408. then we will either

  1409. vastly overestimate

  1410. our capabilities

  1411. and fall into pride,

  1412. or we will despair

  1413. of ever reaching

  1414. the goal

  1415. that God has set

  1416. out for us.

  1417. To find assurance,

  1418. we need to rest

  1419. in God's eternal

  1420. and steady purpose

  1421. in His unfailing

  1422. love and faithfulness.

  1423. When we look down

  1424. below us

1425. and see that the tree

1426. to which we are connected

  1427. through Christ

  1428. is steadily planted

  1429. and well-rooted,

  1430. then we can continue

  1431. bearing fruit

  1432. and not constantly

  1433. be anxiously

  1434. looking around,

  1435. worrying that the tree

1436. is going to fall over

  1437. in the next storm.

  1438. You see,

  1439. it's with this assurance

  1440. we can face

  1441. all the sources

  1442. of our anxiety.

  1443. We can face

  1444. our past

1445. and know that our past

  1446. does not define us.

  1447. We can rest secure

  1448. because we have

  1449. a heavenly Father

  1450. who has foreknown

  1451. and foreloved us

  1452. from before time began.

  1453. We can face

  1454. our present weakness,

  1455. our present sufferings,

1456. and know that through them

  1457. God's refining us,

  1458. even when it's messy,

  1459. even when it's intense,

  1460. and even when it's

  1461. a long journey

  1462. because He's leading us

  1463. toward the destination

1464. that He has set out

  1465. for us in Christ.

  1466. And we can face

  1467. the uncertainties

  1468. of the future

  1469. knowing that God's plans

  1470. and purposes

  1471. for the future

  1472. are as certain

  1473. as if they had

  1474. already happened.

  1475. Brothers and sisters,

  1476. God's eternal purpose

  1477. in Jesus Christ

  1478. is steady

  1479. and strong.

  1480. Let's pray.

  1481. Our Father,

  1482. we thank You

  1483. for this window

  1484. into Your purposes

  1485. from eternity past

  1486. through the present age

  1487. into eternity future.

  1488. Father,

  1489. we pray,

  1490. Lord,

  1491. that as we

  1492. prepare to come

  1493. to the communion table

  1494. that we would cast

  1495. our anxieties on You,

  1496. that we would know

1497. that You care for us,

  1498. that we would know

  1499. that You are faithful

  1500. to Your promises,

1501. that we would be able

  1502. to rest assured

  1503. in Your good purpose

  1504. for us.

  1505. Strengthen us

1506. that we may love You

1507. with all of our hearts,

1508. that as we depend on You,

  1509. that our lives

  1510. might bear fruit.

  1511. Lord Jesus,

1512. You said to Your disciples,

1513. You did not choose me,

1514. but I have chosen You

  1515. and appointed You

1516. to go and bear fruit,

  1517. fruit that will last.

  1518. Lord, help us

  1519. to bear fruit

  1520. for Your kingdom

  1521. with our lives.

  1522. trusting in Your

  1523. mercy and grace.

1524. Pray this in Jesus' name.

  1525. Amen.
