  2. How do we face the worst?

  3. How do we face the worst that life can throw at us?

  4. I don't know what the worst is for you, but I'll bet you can fill in the blank.

  5. What's the greatest disappointment you faced?

  6. What's the greatest disappointment you fear?

  7. The fact is that we might get into a competition and try to compare.

  8. Well, my worst might be worse than your worst.

  9. Your worst might be worse than my worst.

  10. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter, does it?

  11. Because it's your worst in that moment when it happens to you.

  12. When your hopes and your hearts are invested in something,

  13. when they are dashed and broken,

  14. when they are broken,

  15. they cause us to ask questions about God.

  16. Jerry Sitzer writes in his book,

  17. A Grace Disguised,

  18. a book he wrote after the loss of several family members in a terrible car crash.

  19. He said,

  20. My loss made God seem terrifying and inscrutable.

  21. For a long time I saw his sovereignty as a towering cliff in winter, icy, cold, and windswept.

  22. I stood in my misery at the base of this cliff and looked up at its forbidding, unscalable wall.

  23. I felt overwhelmed, intimidated, and crushed by its hugeness.

  24. It loomed over me, completely oblivious to my presence and pain.

  25. It defied climbing.

  26. It mocked my pusiness.

  27. I yelled at God to acknowledge my suffering and to take responsibility for it.

  28. But all I heard was the lonely echo of my own voice.

  29. Maybe you've been there.

  30. Maybe you're there today.

  31. But our worst suffering, our worst disappointment,

  32. is only a part of what could be the worst in our own lives.

  33. Because there's also our worst failure.

  34. When we do the thing we said we would never do.

  35. Maybe something comes to your mind when I see this.

  36. If anyone ever knew that I did that.

  37. The thing you promised you'd never do again.

  38. And you did.

  39. The act of violence or selfishness that destroyed the ones that you loved.

  40. The things that decent people are disgusted by.

  41. That you have done.

  42. Our greatest failures are our David moments.

  43. You remember King David in 2 Samuel 11 and 12.

  44. He looked upon a woman.

  45. He took what was not his.

  46. He schemed to cover it up.

  47. When he couldn't work out his first scheme,

  48. he worked out a worse one.

  49. That killed a man.

  50. And even after that,

  51. he continued to sit in his throne in self-righteousness.

  52. And proclaim with outrage

  53. how terrible it was that other people would do such terrible things.

  54. And it was only until the prophet Nathan looked at him and said,

  55. you are the man.

  56. That David's worst failure came to light.

  57. And we'd like to think we're not like that.

  58. And we wouldn't get there.

  59. But the Bible says otherwise.

  60. The Bible says that we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  61. The Bible says that there is no one righteous.

  62. Not one.

  63. The Bible tells us that we are all capable of our worst failure and sin.

  64. Maybe these moments have not happened to you yet.

  65. Maybe you feel like so far in life you've kind of skated by.

  66. I'd love to tell you, good for you.

  67. That'll be great.

  68. Hope that continues.

  69. But instead, I can only warn you,

  70. the day will come.

  71. The day will come when you will see these things.

  72. And they will test you to the core of your being.

  73. Some of you are sitting there and you are nodding

  74. because you've already seen it.

  75. Although you never know,

  76. there may be another one yet to come.

  77. But you've already seen what feels like your worst.

  78. Your worst trial.

  79. Your worst suffering.

  80. Your worst failure.

  81. Where do you turn?

  82. How do you face it?

  83. How will you walk through these worst of times?

  84. Well, this is what brings us to our passage this morning in Romans.

  85. We're in Romans chapter 8 in your pew Bible.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  86. It's page 944.

  87. We're looking today at Romans 8, 31 through 34.

  88. I'm going to read it in context.

  89. So that you can get a flow of the thought.

  90. I'm actually going to read it starting all the way back in verse 18.

  91. So if you want to start with me there, you can.

  92. We're going to read and pray and then look at this passage together.

  93. The Apostle Paul will help us think through how we face these worst moments in our lives.

  94. Let's read together.

  95. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

  96. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

  97. For the creation was subjected to futility not willingly but because of him who subjected it.

  98. In hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

  99. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

  100. And not only the creation but we ourselves.

  101. We who have the first fruits of the Spirit groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

  102. For in this hope we were saved.

  103. Now hope that is seen is not hope for who hopes for what he sees.

  104. But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

  105. Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

  106. For we do not know what we ought to pray for as we ought.

  107. But the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

  108. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

  109. And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good.

  110. For those who are called according to his purpose.

  111. For those he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

  112. For those whom he predestined, he also called.

  113. And those whom he called, he also justified.

  114. And those whom he justified, he also glorified.

  115. What then shall we say to these things?

  116. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  117. He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all.

  118. How will he not also with him graciously give us all things?

  119. Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?

  120. It is God who justifies.

  121. Who is to condemn?

  122. Christ Jesus is the one who died.

  123. More than that, who was raised?

  124. Who is at the right hand of God?

  125. Who indeed is interceding for us?

  126. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

  127. Shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

  128. As it is written, for your sake we are being killed all the day long.

  129. We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

  130. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors.

  131. Through him who loved us.

  132. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation.

  133. Will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  134. Amen.

  135. Let's pray together.

  136. Lord, we thank you for this word and we thank you for this morning that we have a chance to think on you and what a savior you are.

  137. God, I pray this morning that you would help us to wrestle with these texts.

  138. Lord, I pray for your spirit to apply them to our hearts.

  139. Lord, I pray that we might be encouraged as we meditate on what you have done for us.

  140. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  141. Amen.

  142. So as we look at verses 31 through 34, this is the final section, the climactic section of this tremendous chapter,

  143. which is the final chapter in this tremendous section in the first half of Romans,

  144. whereby God has laid out in careful detail and argumentation all that God has done for us

  145. in working salvation for us in Christ.

  146. We've seen in chapter 8 this great argument.

  147. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.

  148. Because in Christ, God has done what we could not do to satisfy the law.

  149. And he's given us the spirit so that we might actually be able to fulfill the law.

  150. And he's given us the spirit so we might actually live a new life, not according to our old paths of living in sin,

  151. but our new paths.

  152. And the spirit reminds us that we now have this new spirit of life.

  153. Because Christ has been raised from the dead, and the spirit of Christ who has been raised from the dead is now ours.

  154. And not only do we have this new life, but we have this new place as an adopted child of God,

  155. where he brings us.

  156. Not only does he raise us from the dead and call us right before him,

  157. but he brings us into his family.

  158. He calls us ours.

  159. And knowing that, he says, now we can face even the greatest sufferings of life with hope.

  160. Because we know that even the creation itself was subjected to futility, to corruption, to judgment,

  161. so that it might also, with us who are joined with Christ, be redeemed and brought into a place of glory.

  162. And we know that at the center of this glory is that we will be saved from our sin,

  163. and we will be renewed in the image of Christ.

  164. We will be conformed to who he is and his perfect humanity and sinlessness one day.

  165. And as we take up that glory, we reflect his glory, and we enjoy his glory.

  166. And it will be a beautiful thing, a beautiful place, and a beautiful world,

  167. where God will perfectly reign, and we will worship him.

  168. This is, in some ways, the argument of Romans 8.

  169. And it brings us then to this.

  170. What shall we say to these things, Paul says?

  171. How do we respond to all these great things that God has done for us?

  172. And then what we see in the thrust of these few verses in 31 through 34 is that no matter what,

  173. we are secure in the work of Christ for us.

  174. No matter what sufferings we face, no matter how great our sin and our failures are,

  175. the work of Christ is enough for us.

  176. And that's what we're going to look at.

  177. We're going to look at those things in order.

  178. So verses 31 and 32, in light of our suffering and hardship,

  179. we are secure in the work of Christ.

  180. Look at it with me again.

  181. Paul begins this.

  182. This section has five rhetorical questions in 31 through 39.

  183. We're going to answer the first four today.

  184. And Nick's going to get to finish with the last one in verse 35 next week.

  185. His rhetorical question is,

  186. what then shall we say to these things?

  187. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  188. And if you know anything about rhetorical questions,

  189. the answer should be obvious.

  190. Who can be against us?

  191. And what's the answer?

  192. Nobody.

  193. Nobody can be against us.

  194. And you sit there, and I sit here, and we say,

  195. really?

  196. Really, Paul?

  197. Nothing can be against us.

  198. It's one of those places where what the Bible tells us

  199. seems to be so jarringly out of step with our experience of life

  200. that it's almost shocking.

  201. I know because I've walked with many of you

  202. through your circumstances of life.

  203. I know what is against you.

  204. I've seen when to have and to hold from this day forward

  205. till death do us part

  206. seems like an empty at best and cruel at worst promise.

  207. I've seen some of you walk through singleness

  208. for longer than you would want to,

  209. hearing too many times,

  210. it's not you, it's me,

  211. but being left alone with your longing and your desire.

  212. I've seen you come into the office and say,

  213. I lost my section eight.

  214. I don't have a place to stay.

  215. I don't know where to go.

  216. I've seen you as you have tried again and again

  217. to have that baby you most wanted and failed and struggled.

  218. God, why wouldn't you give me this?

  219. I've seen you submit your papers

  220. and your applications for your jobs

  221. as you're finishing your PhDs

  222. and to find the silence be resounding

  223. or to find that all the work that your lab has done

  224. for the last four years

  225. hasn't really produced any results

  226. or the other lab produced their paper first.

  227. I've seen some of you hear the words,

  228. I'm sorry, there's nothing more we can do.

  229. All of these circumstances seem to say

  230. that God is not for us.

  231. All of these life challenges seem to say to us

  232. that God cannot be for us.

  233. I think of one of my high school friends.

  234. Married, had a family.

  235. After they had a couple of biological kids,

  236. they felt led to adopt.

  237. They'd been to Haiti.

  238. They'd seen the orphans left alone

  239. after the great earthquake.

  240. They said, we want to be a part of God adopting

  241. and loving those kids.

  242. They signed up, had a kid assigned to them.

  243. They knew there were a few developmental delays,

  244. but that was pretty typical

  245. of kids who had suffered that trauma.

  246. When they brought him home,

  247. they realized that his trauma

  248. was much deeper than that.

  249. He's never spoken.

  250. His emotional thermostat

  251. is completely unpredictable.

  252. He has fragile X.

  253. He has autism.

  254. He has a number of other things.

  255. How's God for us

  256. when we signed up to love a child

  257. and to help them,

  258. and we get this,

  259. this child whom we seek to love,

  260. but who is a terror in our household?

  261. It's so hard, isn't it?

  262. It's so hard when you face these things,

  263. and it causes us to question God.

  264. God cannot be for us, it seems,

  265. if these things are true.

  266. Paul knows that these are the things

  267. that we think,

  268. and so he leads us in verse 32

  269. to the second rhetorical question,

  270. which is an answer for us.

  271. Look with me again, verse 32.

  272. He who did not spare his own son

  273. but gave him up for us all,

  274. how will he not also with him

  275. graciously give us all things?

  276. Friends, this is the reality

  277. of how we face hard circumstances

  278. and the worst that life can throw at you.

  279. It has to do with where you look.

  280. Because what Paul says is,

  281. in the face of that,

  282. you must look at Jesus.

  283. You must look at what God has done for us

  284. in him.

  285. The cross is the place

  286. where we see something

  287. that we may not know

  288. in other places in our lives,

  289. but where we see it so securely.

  290. Look with me and walk through this,

  291. the language that Paul uses here.

  292. What did God do?

  293. First of all, he did not spare his son.

  294. What parent would choose

  295. to willingly subject his or her child

  296. to suffering,

  297. and yet God gave up his own son,

  298. not only in the incarnation,

  299. as he became human

  300. and took on human frailty,

  301. but also in the crucifixion,

  302. where he was treated abominably,

  303. unjustly, abusively, painfully.

  304. God, greater than Abraham,

  305. as he offered up his son Isaac on the altar,

  306. did not spare his son.

  307. He did not just spare his son,

  308. but he spared his,

  309. do you see the language,

  310. his own son.

  311. There is only one like this.

  312. For God, it was deeply personal.

  313. God gave up his greatest treasure

  314. of his own son

  315. in that sense for us.

  316. And it is not just for some of us,

  317. but it is,

  318. in this language,

  319. it is for us all.

  320. All who are in Christ,

  321. God gave his son up for us.

  322. None of us in Christ

  323. can say,

  324. yeah, God did that for others,

  325. but not for me.

  326. God, who did not spare his own son,

  327. but gave him up for us all,

  328. how will he not also with him

  329. graciously give us all things?

  330. God will graciously give us with him.

  331. Do you see that?

  332. What God gives us first and foremost

  333. is his son.

  334. But he doesn't just give us his son.

  335. He gives us all things with his son.

  336. All the things that we really want,

  337. all the things that we really need,

  338. all the things that we were created for,

  339. all the things so that we might be

  340. the glory that God created

  341. and intended humanity to be.

  342. Let's be clear.

  343. All things here does not include

  344. a big house,

  345. a comfortable life,

  346. lots of children,

  347. a fast car,

  348. and an easy retirement.

  349. It is not those things

  350. that God is most concerned about.

  351. He is concerned about those he called

  352. and those he predestined

  353. and those he justified

  354. and those he glorified.

  355. He is far more concerned

  356. with the salvation of your soul

  357. and your eternal destiny with God.

  358. And in that,

  359. his redemptive work of freeing you

  360. from the sin and brokenness

  361. and pain of life in a fallen world

  362. so that you might experience with him

  363. a restoration to perfection

  364. and to joy

  365. and to beauty

  366. and to glory beyond all imagination.

  367. He who did not spare his son

  368. but gave him up for us all,

  369. will he not

  370. also with him

  371. graciously,

  372. graciously,

  373. not because we deserve it,

  374. not because we've been such good

  375. or faithful Christians,

  376. not because we've sacrificed

  377. to serve him

  378. or to know him,

  379. but simply out of the abundance

  380. of his undeserved favor

  381. towards us,

  382. graciously give us

  383. all things.

  384. Friends,

  385. this is what it means.

  386. If God is for us,

  387. who can be against us?

  388. Well, it seems like

  389. there are a lot of things.

  390. God,

  391. how do I know

  392. that you're really for me?

  393. He who did not spare his son

  394. but gave him up for us all,

  395. will he not also

  396. graciously give us

  397. all things?

  398. What's the answer

  399. to that rhetorical question?

  400. Of course he will.

  401. Of course he will.

  402. God who gave up

  403. his greatest treasure for us,

  404. will he withhold from you?

  405. Will he hold back

  406. from giving you all

  407. that you need

  408. in this life

  409. and the life to come?

  410. Is he stingy?

  411. Is he hard-hearted?

  412. Friends,

  413. when we look at the cross,

  414. we can't say that he is.

  415. Some of you know

  416. that God has given me

  417. a chance to walk

  418. a road of great loss.

  419. And I can't tell you

  420. why he did it.

  421. Even today.

  422. It still doesn't make sense

  423. to me.

  424. Doesn't make sense

  425. when I see my kids

  426. without a mom

  427. day to day

  428. in our home.

  429. Doesn't make sense

  430. as I walk through life

  431. feeling like I've lost

  432. half of me

  433. in ministry

  434. and in parenting

  435. and in life.

  436. It doesn't make sense

  437. as I know many of you

  438. have lost a friend,

  439. a confidant,

  440. an encourager,

  441. someone who prayed

  442. for you.

  443. I don't see

  444. the good in it.

  445. Even today,

  446. the loss seems great

  447. and I don't understand

  448. why.

  449. But friends,

  450. if there's one thing

  451. that I know,

  452. it's this truth

  453. right here

  454. in verses 31

  455. and 32.

  456. that though I cannot

  457. explain my circumstances

  458. and I do not know

  459. all that God has done,

  460. I do know this.

  461. He did not spare

  462. his own son

  463. but he gave us,

  464. gave him up,

  465. us,

  466. gave him up for us,

  467. for me

  468. and for you

  469. and for Brandy

  470. and for our family

  471. and for our church.

  472. He did that

  473. and that is how I know

  474. that God is for us

  475. and not against us.

  476. That is how I know

  477. for sure.

  478. It is how I can sing

  479. when peace like a river

  480. attendeth my way,

  481. when sorrows

  482. like sea billows roll,

  483. whatever my lot,

  484. he has taught me to say

  485. it is well,

  486. it is well with my soul.

  487. Though Satan should buffet,

  488. though trials should come,

  489. let this blessed assurance

  490. control

  491. that Christ has regarded

  492. my helpless estate

  493. and has shed his own blood

  494. for my soul.

  495. My sin of the bliss

  496. of this glorious thought,

  497. my sin not in part

  498. but the whole

  499. is nailed to the cross

  500. and I bear it no more.

  501. Praise the Lord.

  502. Praise the Lord,

  503. oh my soul.

  504. It is well.

  505. It is well.

  506. It is well with my soul.

  507. God is for us.

  508. Who can stand against us?

  509. But Paul says

  510. there is more

  511. than just facing

  512. the trials

  513. and the hardships

  514. and suffering of life.

  515. As he goes on

  516. in verses 33 and 34,

  517. he faces another part

  518. of the worst

  519. of our lives.

  520. Look with me again

  521. and it is important

  522. to get the cadence.

  523. The language

  524. in the English translation

  525. sometimes is a little jarring.

  526. He is not asking a question

  527. and then giving an answer

  528. and then asking a question

  529. and then giving another answer.

  530. Listen as I read it again

  531. so you can try to get

  532. what he is saying here.

  533. 33,

  534. who shall bring any charge

  535. against God's elect?

  536. It is God who justifies.

  537. Who is to condemn?

  538. Christ Jesus

  539. is the one who died

  540. more than that

  541. who was raised,

  542. who is at the right hand

  543. of God,

  544. who indeed is interceding

  545. for us.

  546. So he starts off

  547. with this question

  548. and he moves it

  549. into a courtroom language.

  550. He is using

  551. forensic language here

  552. like we have now

  553. been brought into

  554. the courtroom of heaven

  555. and we are standing

  556. before God the judge

  557. and Paul says

  558. if our worst sufferings

  559. are one of our great trials,

  560. our worst sin and failure

  561. is our other great trial

  562. in this life.

  563. And he says,

  564. who can bring a charge

  565. against God's elect?

  566. And he says,

  567. listen,

  568. if it is God

  569. who is justified,

  570. then who can condemn?

  571. If God sitting in

  572. the throne room

  573. has said,

  574. no,

  575. you are,

  576. because of your attachment

  577. to Christ,

  578. been covered

  579. in his righteousness

  580. and are able

  581. to stand before me

  582. and I declare you

  583. righteous,

  584. then how can anyone

  585. gainsay that?

  586. How can anyone say,

  587. no,

  588. no,

  589. no,

  590. God,

  591. you don't understand.

  592. Let me tell you

  593. about him.

  594. Let me tell you

  595. about what he's done.

  596. I will bring

  597. a condemnation

  598. against him.

  599. Then Paul says,

  600. no,

  601. it is Christ.

  602. Christ who has died,

  603. Christ who was raised,

  604. Christ who is now

  605. at the right hand of God

  606. interceding for us

  607. like a lawyer,

  608. advocating for us,

  609. in fact,

  610. stepping in

  611. and taking our place

  612. in that judicial courtroom

  613. so that we might

  614. stand there.

  615. That's the basic

  616. argument here.

  617. The challenge,

  618. of course,

  619. is like in the first section.

  620. Who shall bring

  621. any charges

  622. against God elect?

  623. Well,

  624. I can think of a few people

  625. who could bring some charges

  626. against me.

  627. Maybe you can think

  628. of a few people as well.

  629. Those in our past,

  630. people you grew up with.

  631. Oh,

  632. you say you're a Christian now,

  633. huh?

  634. Really?

  635. Well,

  636. I knew you when.

  637. I know what you did.

  638. I was reading last night,

  639. rereading a testimony

  640. of Chuck Colson.

  641. You may know him.

  642. He worked for Nixon.

  643. He was a part of the Watergate

  644. damage control team.

  645. And he did,

  646. well,

  647. a number of not very

  648. upright things

  649. as he served in government.

  650. But God saved him.

  651. And he stayed in Washington

  652. and he did ministry there.

  653. And the article is interesting

  654. because it talked about

  655. how he continued to pursue

  656. relationships with his

  657. political friends

  658. who knew what he was like

  659. before.

  660. And how he had to endure

  661. at times

  662. the accusation.

  663. What are you now?

  664. One of those

  665. goody-two-shoe Christians?

  666. I don't think so.

  667. I know you.

  668. I know where you've been.

  669. Those in our past

  670. can bring accusations

  671. against us.

  672. Our own conscience

  673. can bring accusations

  674. against us.

  675. Because you know

  676. better than anyone else

  677. the worst things

  678. that you've done.

  679. You know the deepest

  680. and darkest secrets

  681. of your life.

  682. You know your worst sins.

  683. And even when it wasn't

  684. an action,

  685. even when it was

  686. only a thought

  687. or an attitude

  688. in your heart,

  689. you know how evil

  690. and vile

  691. your thoughts have been.

  692. You know how often

  693. you have lusted

  694. for power,

  695. for pleasure,

  696. for selfish gain.

  697. You know how often

  698. you have hated

  699. others

  700. for your own good.

  701. You know the ways

  702. that you have doubted

  703. and denied

  704. and rejected

  705. and resisted

  706. God.

  707. You know

  708. the way

  709. that you

  710. so often

  711. make your whole life

  712. revolve around you

  713. and you usurp

  714. God

  715. from the center

  716. of the universe

  717. and from your own life.

  718. And if you are honest,

  719. your conscience

  720. tells you

  721. how terrible

  722. you are.

  723. It's not just

  724. people in our past,

  725. it's not just

  726. our consciences,

  727. but there is

  728. in the spiritual world

  729. a power

  730. that brings

  731. to us

  732. accusation

  733. again and again

  734. and again.

  735. Revelation 12, 10

  736. talks about

  737. the accuser

  738. of the brethren,

  739. that is,

  740. Satan,

  741. who accuses them

  742. day and night

  743. and he whispers

  744. the lies.

  745. If they knew

  746. how bad you really were,

  747. if they knew

  748. that you had done that,

  749. they would never

  750. accept you.

  751. You can never

  752. be forgiven

  753. of that sin.

  754. You will never

  755. be good enough

  756. for God

  757. or for anyone else.

  758. And he will

  759. bring to mind

  760. to you

  761. again and again

  762. and again

  763. the worst

  764. of your sin

  765. and he will bring

  766. the weight

  767. of condemnation

  768. and judgment

  769. upon it

  770. and he will seek

  771. to crush you

  772. under guilt

  773. and shame.

  774. because that's

  775. what he does.

  776. Friends,

  777. not only do

  778. these things

  779. accuse you

  780. but here's the thing,

  781. the law of God

  782. itself,

  783. the holiness

  784. of God Almighty

  785. brings to you

  786. a charge

  787. because what we

  788. see in the scriptures

  789. and what we see

  790. in the character

  791. of God

  792. is a holiness

  793. that we will

  794. never attain to.

  795. we are only

  796. fooling ourselves

  797. when we think

  798. we can be good enough.

  799. If we think

  800. that a 60% good

  801. outweighs

  802. our 40% bad

  803. is good enough,

  804. we don't know

  805. the holiness of God.

  806. We don't understand

  807. the gravity of sin.

  808. We don't understand

  809. the weightiness

  810. of our rebellion

  811. and our rejection

  812. of God.

  813. God,

  814. he holds up

  815. a standard

  816. that we cannot

  817. meet

  818. because of our sin.

  819. These voices

  820. speak to us.

  821. So when Paul says,

  822. who can bring a charge

  823. against God's elect,

  824. it seems like

  825. there's a whole room

  826. full of them.

  827. Right?

  828. Right?

  829. guilty,

  830. vile,

  831. and helpless

  832. we.

  833. Who then

  834. does God

  835. think of us?

  836. What then

  837. does God

  838. say about us?

  839. I want to

  840. pause here

  841. for a minute

  842. because I want

  843. to make sure

  844. that we do

  845. understand this.

  846. Right?

  847. Because the argument

  848. in Romans

  849. doesn't make

  850. any sense at all

  851. if we think

  852. we're good.

  853. Go back and read

  854. Romans 1-3 again.

  855. That's the whole point

  856. of Romans 1-18-3-20

  857. is that

  858. all

  859. have sinned

  860. and fallen short

  861. of the glory of God.

  862. All of us

  863. are under it.

  864. Religious people,

  865. not religious people,

  866. Jews,

  867. Gentiles,

  868. people with consciences,

  869. people without consciences.

  870. It doesn't matter

  871. who you are.

  872. All of us.

  873. This is true.

  874. And here's the crazy

  875. thing about it.

  876. It is the most

  877. verifiable

  878. theological doctrine

  879. in human history.

  880. All you have to do

  881. is stop and think

  882. about your own life.

  883. Are you a sinful person?

  884. Have you done things

  885. that are not right?

  886. Well,

  887. of course you have.

  888. And when you look

  889. at the greater swath

  890. of human history,

  891. you think,

  892. well,

  893. what else is

  894. the story

  895. of human history?

  896. Oh,

  897. there are moments

  898. of bright lights.

  899. There are moments

  900. of redemptive breakthroughs.

  901. There are moments

  902. when our created goodness

  903. shines through

  904. and we respond

  905. for a moment

  906. with goodness.

  907. But when we look

  908. over all,

  909. human sinfulness

  910. is one of the most

  911. historically verifiable

  912. theological doctrines

  913. the church has.

  914. We must not

  915. live with the illusion

  916. that we will be good

  917. or good enough.

  918. If you're here

  919. this morning

  920. and you're exploring

  921. Christianity,

  922. know how central

  923. this is.

  924. And I do not say it

  925. to say that you are bad

  926. and we,

  927. I sitting up here,

  928. am good.

  929. No,

  930. what the Bible says

  931. is that we are all

  932. sinful.

  933. No one is righteous,

  934. not one.

  935. And we are all helpless

  936. before our sin.

  937. And if we stood

  938. in that heavenly courtroom

  939. before God

  940. on our own merits,

  941. we would all

  942. face condemnation

  943. condemnation

  944. and judgment

  945. and punishment

  946. for it.

  947. I started quoting

  948. the hymn.

  949. Some of you probably

  950. filled it in,

  951. right?

  952. Guilty,

  953. vile,

  954. and helpless we.

  955. Spotless

  956. Lamb of God

  957. is He.

  958. Full atonement

  959. can it be.

  960. Hallelujah.

  961. What a Savior.

  962. And this is where

  963. Paul points us

  964. again.

  965. Look with me

  966. in verse 34.

  967. We cannot be condemned

  968. because Jesus Christ

  969. has died.

  970. And more than that,

  971. has risen.

  972. And more than that,

  973. is at the right hand

  974. of God

  975. interceding for us.

  976. What is He saying here?

  977. He who died,

  978. the righteous one,

  979. the one who is

  980. perfectly sinless,

  981. died for us.

  982. He took our place

  983. when He came

  984. and died

  985. on the cross.

  986. He died not for Himself

  987. but for us.

  988. And bearing our sin

  989. and taking the punishment

  990. of God for us,

  991. we see both

  992. the greatness

  993. of the offense

  994. of our sin,

  995. but also

  996. the perfection

  997. of God's sinlessness

  998. in Christ

  999. that He might do it

  1000. for us.

  1001. Death would be

  1002. the only proper judgment

  1003. for sin

  1004. against a holy God

  1005. who is the giver

  1006. of life.

  1007. And so Jesus

  1008. took that death

  1009. for us.

  1010. But He did not

  1011. simply die for us.

  1012. But Paul goes on,

  1013. he says,

  1014. and He rose

  1015. from the dead.

  1016. And being raised

  1017. from the dead

  1018. shows that the death

  1019. that He died

  1020. was effective

  1021. to erase

  1022. the punishment

  1023. and to be able

  1024. to then,

  1025. as He rises

  1026. to new life,

  1027. He is able then

  1028. to justify us,

1029. that is to give us

  1030. a right standing

  1031. before God

  1032. by giving us

  1033. His righteousness

  1034. and by giving us

  1035. a new heart

  1036. and a new life,

  1037. a new spirit,

  1038. so that we might

  1039. actually be

  1040. His people.

1041. And so we are now

  1042. raised

  1043. to a new

  1044. and indestructible

  1045. life with Christ.

  1046. And this,

  1047. by faith.

  1048. And so Christ,

  1049. who was raised

  1050. from the dead,

  1051. not only was He

  1052. raised from the dead,

  1053. but He was raised

1054. up to the right hand

  1055. of God,

1056. the right hand of God

  1057. being first and foremost

  1058. a place of honor,

1059. but not only is He there,

1060. but He also is seated

1061. at the right hand of God,

1062. which means that His work

  1063. is finished.

  1064. There is nothing else

  1065. to do

  1066. because what Christ did

1067. when He died on the cross

1068. and rose from the grave

  1069. was to defeat

  1070. the power of sin

  1071. and death

  1072. in the life

  1073. of all who believe

  1074. in Him

  1075. forever.

  1076. Sins past,

  1077. sins present,

  1078. sins future,

  1079. they are covered

  1080. by Christ's death

  1081. and resurrection.

  1082. And therefore,

  1083. when we stand

  1084. in the courtroom,

  1085. when we,

  1086. the accused,

  1087. stand before Him,

  1088. God looks at us

  1089. and He sees

  1090. not our sin,

  1091. but He sees

  1092. the righteousness

  1093. of Christ.

  1094. He looks at us

  1095. and He cannot see

1096. what the rest of us

  1097. all see

  1098. is our sin.

  1099. and He does not

  1100. see it

  1101. because Christ

  1102. has covered us

  1103. in His righteousness.

  1104. And that's why

1105. no one can condemn us

  1106. because can you

  1107. condemn Jesus?

  1108. That's where we stand,

  1109. in Jesus.

  1110. And no one

  1111. can condemn Jesus

  1112. because He was

  1113. the perfect man

  1114. who was without sin.

  1115. and this is His

  1116. intercession for us.

  1117. This is His standing

  1118. in our place

  1119. for us.

  1120. This is His advocacy

  1121. for us

1122. in the heavenly throne room.

  1123. So friends,

  1124. just as we face

  1125. the greatest

  1126. sufferings

  1127. and look to Christ,

  1128. so when we face

  1129. the greatest sin

  1130. in our lives,

  1131. we look to Christ.

  1132. Is Jesus' death

  1133. sufficient

  1134. for the worst thing

  1135. that you've ever done?

  1136. Yes,

  1137. it is.

  1138. Can Jesus' righteousness

  1139. cover your worst sin?

  1140. Yes,

  1141. it can.

  1142. Is there any accusation

  1143. that can be brought

  1144. against you

  1145. when you are clothed

  1146. in the righteousness

  1147. of Christ?

  1148. No,

  1149. there is not one.

  1150. There is none.

  1151. And so we sing,

  1152. when Satan tempts me

  1153. to despair

  1154. and tells me

  1155. of the guilt within,

  1156. upward I look

  1157. and see Him there

  1158. who made an end

  1159. to all my sin.

  1160. Because the sinless

  1161. Savior died,

  1162. my sinful soul

  1163. is counted free

  1164. for God the just

  1165. is satisfied

  1166. to look on Him

  1167. and pardon me.

  1168. Friends,

1169. I wonder how many of you

  1170. are buried this morning

  1171. under the weight

  1172. of guilt and shame.

  1173. I wonder if you

  1174. are here this morning

  1175. and you have thought,

1176. if only I were good enough.

1177. I look at all these

  1178. really good looking people

  1179. around me

  1180. and I think,

  1181. well,

1182. they all have their acts

  1183. together.

  1184. What's wrong with me?

  1185. And so you hide.

  1186. And so you carry

  1187. this burden

  1188. of guilt and shame.

  1189. some of you

  1190. really struggle

  1191. to believe,

  1192. can God forgive me

  1193. of this sin?

  1194. Can God forgive me

  1195. when I blew it

  1196. like that?

1197. Who can bring a charge

  1198. against God's elect?

  1199. It is God

  1200. who justifies.

  1201. Who can condemn?

  1202. Christ Jesus,

  1203. it is He

  1204. who died

  1205. and was raised

  1206. and now intercedes

  1207. for us.

  1208. Friends,

  1209. I want to say

  1210. these things to you.

  1211. This is how

  1212. we face

  1213. the worst moments

  1214. of our lives.

  1215. We look

  1216. not at those things,

  1217. not at the circumstances

1218. and not at the realities

  1219. and it is not

  1220. to deny

  1221. that those things

  1222. are true,

  1223. that we are suffering

1224. and that we are sinful.

  1225. It is not

  1226. to deny

  1227. those things

  1228. but Paul says

  1229. when we face

  1230. those things,

1231. how do we face them?

  1232. We look up.

  1233. We look

  1234. to Christ

  1235. and when we look

  1236. to Christ,

  1237. we see

  1238. what we really need

  1239. because He

  1240. has done it

  1241. for us.

  1242. it is there

  1243. that we find

  1244. assurance

  1245. that God

  1246. is for us

  1247. because He

  1248. died for us.

  1249. It is there

  1250. that we find

  1251. the assurance

  1252. that even

  1253. our worst sin

  1254. cannot condemn us

  1255. because Christ

  1256. has taken

  1257. that condemnation

  1258. for us.

  1259. And friends,

  1260. I want to say

  1261. this with all,

1262. I know some of you

  1263. may be thinking,

  1264. yeah,

  1265. yeah,

  1266. yeah,

1267. I grew up in church,

  1268. I've heard that

  1269. my whole life,

  1270. I know,

  1271. Jesus died on the

  1272. cross for my sins,

  1273. blah, blah, blah.

  1274. Friends,

  1275. they may feel

  1276. like pat answers

  1277. and they may feel

  1278. like platitudes

  1279. to you

  1280. but I tell you

  1281. that they are

  1282. the very bedrock.

  1283. When everything

  1284. else is stripped

  1285. away,

  1286. they are the thing

  1287. that will,

  1288. these truths

  1289. are the things

  1290. that will remain.

  1291. Christ crucified

  1292. and risen

  1293. is the

  1294. unchangeable

  1295. truth

  1296. that will help

  1297. you through,

  1298. that will help

  1299. you to face

  1300. those worst

  1301. moments.

  1302. And friends,

  1303. as you think

  1304. about how to

  1305. prepare for those

  1306. worst moments,

  1307. I tell you,

  1308. practice this.

  1309. Practice looking

  1310. to Christ.

  1311. Practice looking

  1312. to Christ

  1313. in a life

  1314. of hopeful

  1315. faith,

  1316. even when you're

  1317. not in your

  1318. worst moments.

  1319. Look to Him

  1320. and remember

  1321. His goodness.

  1322. Look to Him

  1323. and develop

  1324. a reflex

  1325. of trusting

  1326. Him with

  1327. little things

  1328. so that you

  1329. can trust Him

  1330. with the big

  1331. things.

  1332. Friends,

  1333. look to Him

  1334. and live

  1335. a life

  1336. of costly

  1337. obedience.

  1338. Don't let

  1339. your suffering

  1340. or your failure

  1341. become an excuse

  1342. for you to say,

  1343. well,

  1344. it's all

  1345. gone to hell

  1346. in a handbasket

  1347. anyway,

  1348. so I might as

  1349. well just indulge.

  1350. Don't let that

  1351. happen to you.

  1352. Look to Christ

  1353. and seek to live

  1354. a life of

  1355. obedience,

  1356. even when it's

  1357. costly,

  1358. knowing

  1359. the greatness

  1360. of His sacrifice

  1361. for you.

  1362. And finally,

  1363. look to Him

  1364. in a life

  1365. of worship.

  1366. Whatever treasure

  1367. you are clinging

  1368. to,

  1369. the treasure

  1370. of peace

  1371. or security

  1372. or satisfaction

  1373. in this life,

  1374. the treasure

  1375. of your own

  1376. righteousness,

  1377. whatever treasures

  1378. you are holding

  1379. on to,

  1380. release them

  1381. so that you

  1382. might treasure

  1383. Christ

  1384. for you.

  1385. Let this

  1386. be the thing.

  1387. and as you

  1388. prepare

  1389. now

  1390. by doing

  1391. those things

  1392. daily,

  1393. weekly,

  1394. then

  1395. when you

  1396. face those

  1397. moments

  1398. of the worst,

  1399. you will know

  1400. where to stand.

  1401. What then

  1402. shall we say

  1403. of these things?

  1404. If God

  1405. is for us,

  1406. who

  1407. can be

  1408. against us?

  1409. Let's pray.

  1410. Lord,

  1411. this morning

  1412. we have

  1413. talked about

  1414. things that

  1415. are

  1416. touch on

  1417. perhaps

  1418. some of the

  1419. most painful

  1420. and difficult

  1421. things of our

  1422. lives.

  1423. Lord,

  1424. we pray

  1425. this morning

  1426. that you

  1427. would come

  1428. and bring

  1429. the comfort

  1430. and the

  1431. balm of

  1432. the cross

  1433. to our

  1434. hearts.

  1435. Lord,

  1436. I pray

  1437. for those

  1438. this morning

  1439. who are

  1440. burdened,

  1441. who are

  1442. doubting,

  1443. who are

  1444. questioning,

  1445. who are

  1446. wrestling

  1447. as they

  1448. face

  1449. suffering,

  1450. Lord,

  1451. as they

  1452. see and

  1453. feel the

  1454. guilt of

  1455. their own

  1456. sin.

  1457. Lord,

  1458. I pray

  1459. that you

  1460. will meet

  1461. them in

  1462. those moments

  1463. and Lord,

  1464. that you

  1465. will raise

  1466. them,

  1467. raise their

  1468. eyes to

  1469. see what

  1470. you have

  1471. done in

  1472. Christ for

  1473. them.

  1474. Lord,

  1475. that you

  1476. would help

  1477. us,

  1478. Lord,

  1479. to look not

  1480. on the

  1481. earthly things

  1482. but to look

  1483. at Christ

  1484. in the heavenly

  1485. realms,

  1486. to fix our

  1487. eyes on

  1488. him,

  1489. Lord,

  1490. to be

  1491. helped.

  1492. Lord,

  1493. will you do

  1494. this,

  1495. we pray in

  1496. Jesus' name.

  1497. Amen.

  1498. Amen.

  1499. Amen.

  1500. Amen.

  1501. Amen.

  1502. Amen.

  1503. Amen.

  1504. As the

  1505. music team

  1506. comes forward,

  1507. we're going

  1508. to sing a

  1509. great hymn,

  1510. Immovable Our

  1511. Hope Remains,

  1512. and I hope

  1513. that as you

  1514. sing it,

  1515. you will

  1516. consider the

  1517. words as

  1518. he walks

  1519. us through

  1520. the very

  1521. things we've

  1522. been looking

  1523. at this

  1524. morning in

  1525. Romans 8.

  1526. Please stand

  1527. as we sing

  1528. together.

  1529. Amen.
