  1. Amen. Jeff, I'm glad Christmas is not canceled.

  2. You have to admit, though, sometimes the Christmas season can make me a little bit of a curmudgeon.

  3. There's a song that I particularly find a little draining.

  4. It's on my Amy Grant Christmas album from 1987 or something.

  5. Many of those of you who were born then, so you haven't been subjected to this.

  6. One of the songs she sings is, It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

  7. And I know it's supposed to be an uplifting song, make you happy as you're going to the mall shopping or doing whatever.

  8. And I know there's a message of real joy at Christmas that these songs are supposed to be helping us take hold of.

  9. But, gosh, sometimes it's just so saccharine and so glitzy and so light and tinsel.

  10. And it seems to lack substance.

  11. It feels like it promotes Christmas as the hallmark countdown to Christmas holiday season.

  12. If you're not familiar with that, don't go there.

  13. No, even there, like, there's hopefulness there.

  14. Like, life can't turn out well.

  15. But, you can't find love in your life.

  16. But, the reality is that Christmas is, it just makes, leaves me feeling, having a hollow feeling.

  17. Is this really what Christmas is about?

  18. Is there anything more than this?

  19. This leads us to our passage this morning.

  20. We're continuing in our series on John the Baptist.

  21. And it's going to be a good day to talk about John the Baptist because we're going to have a lot of baptisms in a few minutes.

  22. And so, we're going to look at him.

  23. And if you were here last week, we talked a little bit about John the Baptist, the person, and the context of his ministry.

  24. That he was uniquely the last of the Old Testament prophets come to bridge into the New Testament by proclaiming that all the hopes and fears of the Old Testament people, God.

  25. As they look forward to what God would do.

  26. As they were longing and crying out for God to fulfill the promises of salvation and of restoration and of establishment of his kingdom.

  27. John has come and said, I'm the last of the Old Testament prophets because what's going to come after me will be the fulfillment of all those things.

  28. So, we looked at the context of who John the Baptist was last week.

  29. And then this week, we're going to talk a little bit about the context of his message.

  30. We're going to look at Luke chapter 3.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  31. If you want to turn there, it's page 858 in your pew Bible.

  32. Luke chapter 3.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  33. We're going to be reading verses 1 through 18.

  34. What we will see is that at the very core of John's message is this.

  35. Get ready.

  36. The Lord is coming.

  37. This is a message that is both a warning and a message of hope.

  38. And that's what we're going to see as we read this book together.

  39. So, Luke chapter 3, verses 1 through 18.

    Luke 3:1–18

  40. Let's read that together.

  41. In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate, being governor of Judea,

  42. and Herod, being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip, tetrarch of the region of Turia and Trachonitis,

  43. and Lysanias, tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,

  44. the word of God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.

  45. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

  46. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

  47. the voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  48. Prepare the way of the Lord, make his path straight.

  49. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low,

  50. and the crooked shall become straight,

  51. and the rough places shall become level waves,

  52. and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

  53. He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him,

  54. You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

  55. Bear fruits in keeping with repentance,

  56. and do not begin to say to yourselves,

  57. We have Abraham as our father.

  58. For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

  59. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees.

  60. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

  61. And the crowds asked him,

  62. What then shall we do?

  63. He answered them,

  64. Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none,

  65. and whoever has food is to do likewise.

  66. Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him,

  67. Teacher, what shall we do?

  68. And he said to them,

  69. Collect no more than you are authorized to do.

  70. The soldiers also asked him,

  71. And what shall we do?

  72. And he said to them,

  73. Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation,

  74. and be content with your wages.

  75. As the people were filled with expectation,

  76. and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John whether he might be the Christ,

  77. John answered them all,

  78. saying,

  79. I baptize you with water,

  80. but he who is mightier than I is coming,

  81. the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.

  82. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

  83. His winnowing fork is in his hands,

  84. clear his brushing floor,

  85. and gather the wheat into his barn,

  86. but the chaff he will burn with unfunchable fire.

  87. So with many other exhortations,

  88. he preached good news to the people.

  89. Let's pray together.

  90. Lord, we come before you this morning,

  91. yearning that the message of Christmas would have greater significance to us,

  92. because of your word.

  93. Lord, I pray this morning as we look into this passage,

  94. Lord, that you would speak to us.

  95. Lord, that you would prepare our hearts to receive the message that you have for us this morning.

  96. God, I pray that I might speak your words faithfully,

  97. and that your Holy Spirit would apply your word to our minds and to our hearts this morning.

  98. Lord, help us this morning to hear your word,

  99. and to listen to you, and to recite you.

  100. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  101. Amen.

  102. Get ready.

  103. The Lord is coming.

  104. It's interesting when you look at verse 18,

  105. how Luke kind of wraps up this section.

  106. He says that the Lord was preaching,

  107. or John the Baptist was preaching good news,

  108. but did it strike you as a message of good news as you listen?

  109. When you look particularly at verses 7 through 14,

  110. does this sound like good news to you?

  111. John's message has a warning in it.

  112. That we all need to hear this warning.

  113. And at its core, the message is this.

  114. You are not okay with God.

  115. And He is coming to settle accounts with you.

  116. Do you notice the images that he used?

  117. He talked about a wrath that is to come.

  118. He talked about an axe being laid at the root of a tree.

  119. A tree that would be evaluated for its fruit,

  120. and if found lacking,

  121. if found unworthy,

  122. it would be chopped down.

  123. John begins his message of good news by saying,

  124. there is a problem here.

  125. You are not okay with God,

  126. and He is coming.

  127. And He is coming to judge.

  128. Now, judgment is not something we particularly like in our culture today.

  129. It's not something that we...

  130. And part of it, there's a proper recognition that

  131. when we as human beings take on the role of ultimate judge in the world,

  132. we fail.

  133. Because we are finite people,

  134. and we are weak,

  135. and we don't know all that we ought to.

  136. And yet, it has made us squeamish about the idea

  137. that there could be any judgment at all.

  138. But instead, what we see in the Bible

  139. is that judgment is actually inherent

  140. in the overall message of the Bible,

  141. and is key to the good news that it proclaims.

  142. Let me explain that briefly.

  143. First of all, we see John has taken up this role

  144. as the last Old Testament prophet.

  145. And as you may have this impression in your mind,

  146. oh, the Old Testament prophets,

  147. they were the ones who always preached judgment,

  148. who always talked about how everyone was doing everything wrong,

  149. and how God was going to come and bring destruction.

  150. But interestingly,

  151. if you look at the New Testament,

  152. if you read Jesus' words carefully

  153. and with your eyes open,

  154. you will see that

  155. John is in a part of a tradition

  156. that does stretch back through the Old Testament,

  157. but stretches ahead

  158. into the very words and teaching of Jesus

  159. and the teaching of the Apostle Paul,

  160. the Bible speaks from beginning to end

  161. that judgment is coming.

  162. But it not only says that,

  163. but it says that this judgment is good.

  164. I'll explain that to you

  165. because you may be surprised when I say that.

  166. Judgment is good

  167. because it means that people will not be loved.

  168. Judgment is good

  169. because it means that wrongdoing

  170. will not be overlooked.

  171. We all have deep in us

  172. a sense of right and wrong,

  173. a sense of justice.

  174. We may argue until we,

  175. as long as the day is,

  176. about what is wrong and what is right,

  177. but we all know

  178. that there is a right and wrong.

  179. And we all long

  180. for evil to stop.

  181. We all long

  182. for wrongdoers

  183. to face consequences,

  184. to be punished,

  185. or to be redeemed,

  186. but not for it to be simply overlooked.

  187. And the message of judgment

  188. in the scriptures

  189. is an important one

  190. for us to recognize.

  191. That it is not just there

  192. consistently and conspicuously,

  193. but it is actually

  194. a good message for us.

  195. And so John comes and he says,

  196. there is a judgment coming.

  197. And here's the thing,

  198. if we're an oppressed people,

  199. if we are on the receiving end

  200. of wrongdoing or evil in the world,

  201. we long for that, don't we?

  202. We long for King Richard

  203. to return from his travels to England

  204. and cast out that nasty Prince John.

  205. All of this is through Disney.

  206. This is not history.

  207. This is all through Disney.

  208. Because that King Richard

  209. will come back

  210. and he will cast out Prince John

  211. who's been taxing people to death

  212. and putting people in prison

  213. and oppressing the good citizens

  214. of England.

  215. When we're on that end

  216. of evil,

  217. we long for this judgment to come.

  218. But John also sees

  219. that there are some

  220. who need to recognize

  221. that you're actually

  222. on the other side.

  223. You are the one

  224. who when God comes,

  225. he will find you wanting.

  226. He will find you

  227. to be one

  228. who is perpetrating

  229. evil in the world.

  230. He will find you

  231. whose heart is not right

  232. before God

  233. and before your fellow

  234. human beings.

  235. This is what we see.

  236. Look with me again

  237. in the scriptures.

  238. This is what we see

  239. in verse 8 particularly.

  240. John says,

  241. bear fruit

  242. of repentance.

  243. That is,

  244. look to your life

  245. to see what kind

  246. of things it bears.

  247. And then he goes on

  248. and this seems to be

  249. the very heart

  250. of his warning.

  251. And interestingly,

  252. when you look at the

  253. parallel passage

  254. in Matthew,

  255. Matthew identifies

  256. that he's particularly

  257. saying these things

  258. to the religious leaders,

  259. the Pharisees

  260. and the Sadducees.

  261. But it seems that here,

  262. Luke chooses not to do that

  263. because it's a broader thing

  264. that he's warning them of.

  265. Jews in the first century

  266. might have felt

  267. very entitled.

  268. I am a physical

  269. descendant of Abraham.

  270. I am a citizen

  271. of the nation of Israel.

  272. I am a regular partaker

  273. in the worship

  274. in the temple

  275. and the offering

  276. of sacrifices

  277. as I ought to.

  278. Therefore,

  279. I must be okay with God.

  280. And religious identity.

  281. Know that you cannot

  282. be good with God

  283. simply through

  284. those things.

  285. Those formal,

  286. external things

  287. are never enough.

  288. Your heritage

  289. as a churchgoer,

  290. your self-identity

  291. as a good person

  292. who does good things

  293. to others,

  294. these are not sufficient.

  295. John says,

  296. you need a life

  297. that's transformed.

  298. He even looks at,

  299. when he talks to those

  300. in verses 10 through 14,

  301. he has a whole list of people.

  302. He has a crowd

  303. and he has tax collectors

  304. who were hated collaborators

  305. of the Roman oppressors

  306. and he has soldiers

  307. who were the means

  308. by which this oppression

  309. has been laid out.

  310. And they come to him

  311. and they say,

  312. what do we have to do?

  313. And he says,

  314. you have to change

  315. the way you live.

  316. You have to change

  317. how you wield your power,

  318. whether it be

  319. your material belongings,

  320. your position

  321. in government,

  322. or the raw physical power

  323. of a soldier.

  324. You may no longer

  325. use these things

  326. to oppress,

  327. but you must use them

  328. righteously

  329. and to serve others.

  330. And the warning

  331. is that being religious

  332. does not save us.

  333. Being good

  334. does not save us.

  335. We need something else.

  336. We need a change of heart

  337. and we need a change

  338. of character.

  339. Friends,

  340. this is bad news for us

  341. potentially as well.

  342. You may be sitting here

  343. this morning

  344. because going to church

  345. is something

  346. you've grown up with.

  347. It's the right thing to do.

  348. As one of the great

  349. 70s theologians,

  350. Keith Green,

  351. that was a joke.

  352. If you don't know him,

  353. he's a popular singer.

  354. But going to church

  355. doesn't make you Christian

  356. any more than going to McDonald's

  357. makes you a hamburger.

  358. attendance does not produce

  359. what church

  360. is meant

  361. to produce.

  362. Simply being here,

  363. simply doing those,

  364. going through the motions

  365. is not enough

  366. for us.

  367. And even our

  368. good enough,

  369. whether we're not,

  370. maybe we're not churchgoers,

  371. but we're here this morning

  372. because our friend

  373. is being baptized.

  374. baptized,

  375. even your good enough

  376. by whatever standard

  377. you have

  378. is not going

  379. to be enough.

  380. John the Baptist says

  381. what you need

  382. is a baptism of repentance

  383. for the forgiveness

  384. of sins.

  385. That's what it says

  386. in verse 3.

  387. That was the core

  388. of his message.

  389. A baptism

  390. is a picture

  391. of cleansing.

  392. You need to be

  393. cleansed of something

  394. that right now

  395. you are

  396. dirty with.

  397. And that dirt

  398. is sin.

  399. And that sin

  400. is all the ways

  401. in which we fail

  402. to honor

  403. and glorify God.

  404. Tyler,

  405. thank you for your prayer

  406. this morning.

  407. That was a beautiful expression

  408. of our understanding

  409. of sin

  410. and how our selfishness

  411. and our rejection

  412. of God

  413. and our desire

  414. to glorify ourselves

  415. and the ways

  416. that in so many

  417. petty ways

  418. we hurt others

  419. and exalt ourselves.

  420. all the various ways

  421. in which we

  422. deny God

  423. in our lives

  424. and put ourselves

  425. at the center.

  426. All of these

  427. are expressions

  428. of sin.

  429. For the religious people

  430. it was putting

  431. their religious performance

  432. and identity

  433. before God

  434. in the middle

  435. of their lives.

  436. And John says

  437. you must turn

  438. from these things.

  439. The warning

  440. comes with an exhortation

  441. to repent.

  442. And repentance

  443. means to change

  444. your mind.

  445. It means to change

  446. your mind

  447. about something.

  448. What I used to think

  449. was most important.

  450. What I used to think

  451. was most central.

  452. What I used to think

  453. would make me okay

  454. with God

  455. and has failed.

  456. What I used to think

  457. would give me

  458. a good life

  459. but will put me

  460. at odds with God.

  461. I have to turn

  462. from those things.

  463. I need to abandon

  464. the belief

  465. that those things

  466. are right and good

  467. and what God

  468. wants for me

  469. and I must turn

  470. to something else.

  471. This is what

  472. biblical repentance is.

  473. It is seeing things

  474. the way God sees it

  475. and seeing what is wrong

  476. and what is evil

  477. and what is sinful

  478. and agreeing

  479. that those things

  480. are not good

  481. and turning from them

  482. to something else.

  483. And that something else

  484. is not simply

  485. a right understanding

  486. of God

  487. intellectually.

  488. Not simply

  489. an uptick

  490. in our morality

  491. for this week

  492. or this month

  493. but it's the forgiveness

  494. of our sins.

  495. Friends,

  496. this is the

  497. good news

  498. that John

  499. wants to bring.

  500. Though there is

  501. a great warning

  502. and though the king

  503. is going to come

  504. and there will be

  505. a reckoning

  506. but there is

  507. a place to turn

  508. not only turn from

  509. but there is a place

  510. to turn to

  511. and when we turn

  512. to him

  513. there is hope

  514. for us.

  515. Because many people

  516. flocked from Jerusalem.

  517. They were leaving

  518. behind the temple.

  519. They were leaving

  520. behind the city

  521. where God was

  522. meant to dwell

  523. with his people.

  524. They knew

  525. that it was empty

  526. and they were

  527. looking for

  528. something more.

  529. And they wondered,

  530. John, are you the one?

  531. Are you the one

  532. who's going to bring

  533. the fulfillment

  534. of all the promises?

  535. John says,

  536. no, it's not me.

  537. There's one coming

  538. after me.

  539. One who is so much

  540. greater than I

  541. that I am even

  542. unworthy

  543. to untie

  544. his sandals.

  545. And remember,

  546. untying his sandals

  547. is not an act

  548. of honor

  549. or a display

  550. of great respect.

  551. It was a work

  552. of a servant.

  553. It was a dirty work.

  554. It was taking off

  555. the shoes

  556. after you've lived,

  557. after you've walked

  558. around

  559. the dusty,

  560. dirty,

  561. and I mean

  562. stinky dirty,

  563. streets

  564. of Palestine.

  565. It was not an honor

  566. to untie their shoes.

  567. It was drudge work.

  568. And John says,

  569. I'm not even worthy

  570. to do that

  571. because of the greatness

  572. of the one

  573. who comes

  574. after me.

  575. He is coming.

  576. He is going to be

  577. the one

  578. that when you see him

  579. you will see

  580. the salvation

  581. of God

  582. mentioned in verse 6.

  583. He is going to be

  584. the one

  585. who's going to come

  586. and bring a greater

  587. baptism

  588. than I do

  589. because the baptism

  590. that I do

  591. is water

  592. and it's going

  593. to clean your skin

  594. but the baptism

  595. that he's going

  596. to bring

  597. is going to be

  598. done with the Holy Spirit

  599. and it's going

  600. to clean your soul

  601. and it's going

  602. to be able

  603. to change your heart

  604. and it's going

  605. to be able

  606. to transform

  607. your life.

  608. A turning

  609. to this one

  610. who comes

  611. after me

  612. will be turning

  613. to

  614. what you've

  615. really always

  616. longed for.

  617. And in fact

  618. it's not just

  619. you turning

  620. to him

  621. but it's him

  622. coming for you.

  623. Did you see it

  624. in verses

  625. 16 and 17

  626. which John

  627. is talking

  628. about

  629. this one

  630. who's coming

  631. after him.

  632. Verse 17

  633. is such a powerful

  634. verse.

  635. His winnowing fork

  636. is in his hand

  637. to clear his

  638. threshing floor

  639. and to gather

  640. the wheat

  641. into his barn

  642. but the chaff

  643. he will burn

  644. with the unquenchable

  645. fire.

  646. This is a picture

  647. from if you've

  648. never seen

  649. a threshing floor

  650. it's basically

  651. this platform

  652. that the harvested

  653. grain would be

  654. poured out upon

  655. and the grain

  656. had an inner

  657. meat of it

  658. that was good

  659. and an outer husk

  660. that was hard

  661. and dry

  662. and inedible

  663. and in order

  664. to separate them out

  665. the threshers

  666. would take a shovel

  667. and throw it

  668. up in the air

  669. and the wind

  670. would blow

  671. the hard

  672. chaff

  673. that was inedible

  674. away

  675. and the good

  676. grain would

  677. fall back

  678. to the

  679. to the floor

  680. and then it

  681. would be gathered

  682. up

  683. and it was

  684. how grain

  685. was harvested

  686. and gathered

  687. and part of

  688. what John

  689. is saying

  690. is that

  691. when Jesus

  692. comes

  693. he will gather

  694. his own

  695. there is wheat

  696. and he will

  697. gather it

  698. there is also

  699. chaff

  700. there are those

  701. who are going

  702. through the motions

  703. there are those

  704. who are trusting

  705. in themselves

  706. there are those

  707. who are doing

  708. all these things

  709. and they will

  710. be blown away

  711. and they will

  712. find themselves

  713. on the wrong

  714. side of judgment

  715. how does

  716. Jesus do this

  717. how do we know

  718. what Jesus

  719. is going to do

  720. what is it

  721. what is John

  722. saying

  723. well he doesn't

  724. say here

  725. but Luke knows

  726. Luke wrote the

  727. gospel to say

  728. read the rest

  729. of the story

  730. read all the way

  731. through chapter 24

  732. for that matter

  733. read the whole

  734. other book

  735. book of Acts

  736. and I'm going

  737. to write

  738. about how this

  739. will change

  740. the world

  741. and change

  742. your life

  743. but Luke

  744. as he lays

  745. out this

  746. he says

  747. this Jesus

  748. that John

  749. is proclaiming

  750. he will come

  751. and live

  752. the perfect

  753. life that we

  754. ought to

  755. but can't

  756. he will offer

  757. himself in our

  758. place

  759. taking upon

  760. himself

  761. the wrath

  762. of God

  763. against our

  764. sin

  765. he will be

  766. cut off

  767. the axe

  768. will be laid

  769. to his

  770. root

  771. he will be

  772. cut off

  773. from God

  774. the father

  775. so that we

  776. won't be

  777. cut off

  778. from God

  779. he will take

  780. the judgment

  781. upon himself

  782. as he dies

  783. on the cross

  784. on Good

  785. Friday

  786. but he will

  787. rise again

  788. as well

  789. he will rise

  790. victorious over

  791. sin and death

  792. and the grave

  793. and he is able

  794. then to be a

  795. savior who

  796. offers to all

  797. who believe

  798. and trust in him

  799. not in their

  800. religious actions

  801. not in their

  802. goodness

  803. but who trust

  804. in him

  805. alone

  806. he comes

  807. to them

  808. as their

  809. savior

  810. and he offers

  811. them

  812. a new

  813. life

  814. and that

  815. new life

  816. is characterized

  817. by repentance

  818. and turning

  819. from sin

  820. and taking

  821. hold of

  822. this new

  823. life that God

  824. has given us

  825. it transforms

  826. our hearts

  827. and enables

  828. us to be

  829. those who

  830. love and

  831. serve others

  832. the way God

  833. has called

  834. us to

  835. so Jesus

  836. comes

  837. Jesus

  838. comes as a

  839. savior

  840. and as a

  841. judge

  842. and the

  843. question that

  844. John the

  845. Baptist put

  846. to his

  847. hearers

  848. is the

  849. question

  850. that I

  851. want to

  852. leave you

  853. with today

  854. are you

  855. ready

  856. are you

  857. ready for

  858. Christmas

  859. are you

  860. ready for

  861. this Jesus

  862. to come

  863. he will

  864. come

  865. and to

  866. all who

  867. turn to

  868. him in

  869. repentance

  870. and faith

  871. who know

  872. the depth

  873. of their

  874. sin

  875. he will

  876. welcome

  877. but to

  878. those of

  879. us who

  880. want to

  881. stand

  882. obstinately

  883. outside

  884. who want

  885. to trust

  886. in ourselves

  887. and make

  888. our own

  889. way

  890. and be

  891. our own

  892. God

  893. he will

  894. come

  895. as a

  896. judge

  897. do you

  898. hear the

  899. warning

  900. and do you

  901. hear the

  902. hope

  903. this is

  904. what

  905. Christmas

  906. is about

  907. let's

  908. pray

  909. together

  910. Jesus

  911. we love

  912. you

  913. and we

  914. thank you

  915. for

  916. this season

  917. where we

  918. remember the

  919. incredible gift

  920. of your

  921. incarnation

  922. that you

  923. came

  924. to be

  925. our savior

  926. by identifying

  927. with us

  928. and dying

  929. for us

  930. Lord I

  931. pray this

  932. morning

  933. that as we

  934. walk through

  935. this season

  936. that you

  937. will help

  938. us

  939. Lord that

  940. you will

  941. help us

  942. to consider

  943. the significance

  944. and the

  945. depth of

  946. what we

  947. celebrate

  948. when we

  949. celebrate

  950. Christmas

  951. and Lord I

  952. pray for

  953. many this

  954. morning

  955. I pray

  956. that the

  957. joy

  958. of the

  959. hope of

  960. salvation

  961. in Christ

  962. would fill

  963. our hearts

  964. that we

  965. would turn

  966. from the

  967. empty

  968. things

  969. of this

  970. world

  971. from the

  972. empty

  973. religiosity

  974. and the

  975. empty

  976. works

  977. that we

  978. would turn

  979. to him

  980. and find

  981. hope

  982. we pray

  983. these things

  984. in Jesus

  985. name

  986. amen
