  1. Good morning, church. Our sermon text this morning is John chapter 1, verses 19 through 34.

    John 1:19–34

  2. Let me ask you to turn there with me. That's page 886 in the Pew Bible.

  3. This Advent season, we've been looking at the life and message of John the Baptist,

  4. which isn't your typical Christmas sermon series, I admit. But John the Baptist has a lot to say

  5. about getting ready for Jesus' arrival. Prepare for the coming King. That was John's message.

  6. And after all, that's what Advent is all about, isn't it? Preparing for the coming King.

  7. We remember Jesus' first coming in grace. We look ahead to His second coming in glory. That's what

  8. we're doing this month. So let's pick up our series in the Gospel of John, chapter 1, verse 19. And

    John 1:19

  9. before we read that, let me pray for us. Father, as we have just sung, tidings of comfort and joy.

  10. Oh, how we long to hear a word of comfort that will produce much joy. God, we confess that we are

  11. often not a comforted people, but a very disturbed people.

  12. Lord, we are often not a joyful people, but we are a distressed people.

  13. So God, now as we draw near to you in your word, we pray that you would

  14. reveal to us now, through your written word, a fresh sight of Jesus, your incarnate word.

  15. Lord, help us by your spirit to behold him, and in beholding him to love him, and in loving him to

  16. follow him, and in following him to know this comfort and joy. Do this for our good, and for your glory,

  17. Father, we pray. For it is in Jesus' name we ask it. Amen.

  18. Amen. John chapter 1, verse 19 through 34.

    John 1:19–34

  19. And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,

  20. who are you? He confessed and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ.

  21. And they asked him, what then? Are you Elijah? He said, I'm not. Are you the prophet? And he answered, no.

  22. So they said to him, who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about

  23. yourself? He said, I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord,

  24. as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, then why are you

  25. baptizing if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet? John answered them, I baptize with

  26. water, but among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose

  27. sandal I'm not worthy to untie. These things took place in Bethany, across the Jordan, where John was

  28. baptizing. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, behold, the Lamb of God who takes away

  29. the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, after me comes a man who ranks before me, because

  30. he was before me. I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he

  31. might be revealed to Israel. And John bore witness. I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and

  32. it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me,

  33. he on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

  34. And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

  35. Well, there's a lot to look at during the Christmas season, isn't there? I wonder what you're looking

  36. for. Maybe you're still looking for some good sales on Christmas gifts, 20% off Star Wars at Target,

  37. just in case you're wondering. Maybe you're excited to look in your mailbox for Christmas cards from

  38. friends and family. Maybe you just keep looking at your calendar, counting down the days until

  39. Christmas vacation. One of the things we like to do as a family is drive around our neighborhood and

  40. look at all the lights and the lawn ornaments our neighbors have put up. I think the prize still goes

  41. to, for the second year in a row, the inflatable Darth Vader wearing a Santa hat just a few doors down.

  42. You gotta love how you can stick a Santa hat on anything, and suddenly it becomes a Christmas

  43. decoration, right? Santa hat on angry cat, Christmas decoration, done.

  44. But first, on a serious note, amidst all that fun and distracting stuff, what really has your attention

  45. this Christmas season? What do the eyes of your heart keep coming back to, keep looking at, as it were?

  46. What are you really beholding or focusing on?

  47. Maybe if we were to have a good heart-to-heart, you'd say it's finances.

  48. It's hard not to think about finances during the Christmas season, right?

  49. Maybe a relationship that's going well, or maybe not going well.

  50. Maybe a loved one who's sick, or maybe a health issue of your own.

  51. Maybe what keeps drawing your attention is a big decision on the horizon.

  52. Where to go to college, where to find work.

  53. Something probably is there, capturing your attention and drawing the gaze of your mind and your heart.

  54. You know, but amidst all these things that capture our gaze,

  55. here in the middle of our passage comes this word,

  56. behold.

  57. Now, that's not a word we use much, is it?

  58. Behold.

  59. It's not like you've opened your fridge late at night and said,

  60. behold.

  61. Leftovers for dinner, right?

  62. Behold.

  63. But it's a great word.

  64. I think we need to revive it.

  65. Behold.

  66. Look.

  67. Take notice.

  68. Set your gaze right here.

  69. This is it.

  70. For the last few weeks, we've looked at John the Baptist's ministry,

  71. his ministry of baptism.

  72. We've looked at his message, his message of repentance and how that's good news.

  73. But you know, this morning, we get down to it.

  74. We get to the heart of what John was all about.

  75. Look, John says.

  76. Behold.

  77. Behold.

  78. Amidst all the distractions, especially for us at Christmastime, the gifts, the lights, the gift sales.

  79. Amidst all the cares and concerns that this time of year brings, the hopes, the fears, the disappointments, the stress.

  80. This is what we really have to see.

  81. Here's the answer to what you've been looking for.

  82. This is what you really have to behold.

  83. Now, I wonder, when you look at Jesus, what do you see?

  84. Perhaps you see many things.

  85. See a great teacher.

  86. See a great teacher with some pretty good principles that only if you could put them into practice, things might be a little different.

  87. Maybe you see a religious founder, someone to admire for his spiritual bravery.

  88. John the Baptist, too, had a lot of things to say about Jesus, didn't he?

  89. I mean, just look at the paragraph.

  90. He's the one who ranks before me because he was before me.

  91. He is the one on whom the Spirit of God remains.

  92. Not like those other figures in the Old Testament on whom the Spirit of God would come and then leave and then come.

  93. No, the Spirit of God remains on him.

  94. He is the one who will usher in the new age of God's redemption.

  95. He will baptize us, not with water, but with the Holy Spirit.

  96. We will be awash in the very presence of God because of this one.

  97. And at the end of our text, he's the Son of God.

  98. The King.

  99. The Messiah.

  100. The one we've been waiting for.

  101. So much to say and to know about Jesus.

  102. But look.

  103. Fix your gaze on this.

  104. Here's what I really want you to see.

  105. Behold, John says, pointing at Jesus.

  106. The Lamb.

  107. Now, in the first century, there were some Jewish writers and some Jewish religious groups that weren't very mainstream.

  108. But we have some of their writings still in existence.

  109. And they would talk and they would write symbolically about a lamb-like figure who would come at the end of the age as a warrior to execute God's judgment on the world.

  110. A sort of apocalyptic warrior lamb.

  111. Sounds like a good Netflix series, doesn't it?

  112. But is that what John wants us to behold here in Jesus?

  113. The apocalyptic warrior lamb.

  114. Of course, John did speak of Jesus as the mighty one who would come with the Holy Spirit in fire.

  115. John wasn't afraid to talk about God's rightful king being the rightful judge who will set the world to rights.

  116. But, I think the answer is a little more obvious.

  117. Because John was the son of a priest, wasn't he?

  118. Zachariah.

  119. Remember that story from the Gospel of Luke?

  120. So, John, as a young man, would have grown up very personally familiar with a different kind of lamb.

  121. With lambs that were sacrificed every day in the temple.

  122. Day in and day out.

  123. And John would have been steeped, like every other Jew of his time, in the stories of the Old Testament.

  124. Stories of the lamb that God provided for Abraham in Genesis 22.

  125. Stories about the lambs that Moses prescribed in the law.

  126. In Leviticus, for example.

  127. The whole range of offerings and sacrifices.

  128. But most of all,

  129. John, like every other Jew of his day, would have been steeped and shaped by the story of the Passover.

  130. By the story of the Exodus.

  131. Do you remember the story of the Passover?

  132. When God's judgment came down upon everyone in Egypt.

  133. Both Egyptian and Israelite alike.

  134. And the only thing that kept the Israelite family safe was a lamb.

  135. Instead of God's judgment taking the firstborn,

  136. they were to sacrifice a lamb instead and put its blood on the doorposts.

  137. And as God's judgment came, it would literally pass them over.

  138. Because a sacrifice had been made in their place.

  139. And here is John the Baptist with rich symbolism, standing in the wilderness,

  140. identifying with the voice of Isaiah 40.

  141. I'm a voice crying out in the wilderness.

  142. That's a quote from Isaiah 40.

  143. And what was Isaiah 40 all about?

  144. That whole section of Isaiah is about a new Exodus.

  145. Here is John heralding the new Exodus that Isaiah looked forward to.

  146. And here was John saying, in light of that new Exodus that's coming,

  147. that we all need to be cleansed.

  148. And that this baptism that he had come with was just something,

  149. was just a sign of something greater to come.

  150. Knowing that in that same section of Isaiah, in Isaiah 53,

  151. there was a suffering servant who would die a sacrificial death

  152. that somehow, mysteriously, would set the people free.

  153. And now seeing Jesus, John says, behold, the lamb.

  154. The perfect sacrifice for our sins.

  155. So why don't we do this morning what John's telling us to do?

  156. Why don't we behold this lamb?

  157. We're going to focus on verse 29.

  158. And I want us to notice three things that we behold about this lamb in verse 29.

  159. First, we see something about his source.

  160. Jesus, we're told, is the lamb of God.

  161. That is, God himself provides this lamb.

  162. You know, outside of the Bible, nearly every other example of sacrifice

  163. is a human attempt to win over the gods.

  164. I just read the Iliad for the first time last month.

  165. Has anyone here read the Iliad?

  166. It's really long.

  167. It's great, though.

  168. But it's wonderful.

  169. You have these Greek warriors just sacrificing stuff all the time.

  170. Why?

  171. Because the gods are so unreliable.

  172. They're fickle.

  173. And they're selfish.

  174. And they have lots of sex with each other.

  175. It's crazy.

  176. That's how sacrifices worked in most of the ancient world.

  177. You take something that was of value, that belonged to you,

  178. a nice fat animal, a big cup of wine,

  179. and you would sacrifice it, and you would pour it out

  180. in hopes that the aroma of that going up

  181. would please somehow, someway,

  182. whatever God it was you were hoping to win favor with.

  183. But in the Bible, it's completely different.

  184. Here, in the Bible, we have not a human attempt

  185. to win over some fickle, temperamental deity.

  186. No, here we have the sacrifice that we need

  187. coming down as a gift from God himself.

  188. That the initiative to put things right

  189. comes not from our side, but from God's side.

  190. And the provision comes not from our side,

  191. but from God's side.

  192. And the atonement comes.

  193. The reconciliation comes.

  194. Not from our side, but from God's side.

  195. This is God's doing.

  196. It's his gift to us.

  197. And perhaps the deepest mystery of all

  198. that the gospel of John will unfold

  199. is that this Lamb of God

  200. is God.

  201. God incarnate in our flesh.

  202. He ranks before me because he was before me,

  203. John says.

  204. Now, on one level, that's not true.

  205. John the Baptist was older than Jesus.

  206. And he showed up on the scene before Jesus.

  207. And yet, John says, he was before me.

  208. The opening verses of John's gospel express

  209. the Trinitarian reality of God

  210. with such simplicity and profundity

  211. that will probably never be bettered.

  212. In the beginning was the Word.

  213. And the Word was with God.

  214. And the Word was God.

  215. You see, friends, when God gives his Son

  216. the Word to be the Lamb,

  217. it is God himself coming down to rescue us.

  218. Behold the Lamb of God.

  219. Now, what should we make of all this?

  220. Well, when we behold the source of the Lamb

  221. that God himself provided Jesus as our sacrifice,

  222. it ought to be humbling,

  223. at the very least.

  224. After all, how great must our sin be

  225. if it took nothing less

  226. than the self-giving sacrifice

  227. of God's own Son to reconcile us?

  228. How terrible must our condition be

  229. if God himself had to die for us?

  230. You know, if you take your car to the shop

  231. and they give you a bill for 50 bucks,

  232. then you know it's no big deal, right?

  233. An oil change, maybe a new belt, no problem.

  234. In, out, done.

  235. But if you go in and they hand you an estimate

  236. for $5,000,

  237. then you know something has gone horribly wrong.

  238. Your car's not even worth $5,000, right?

  239. The transmission must be blown.

  240. The engine must be totally seized up.

  241. Something has gone drastically wrong.

  242. And friends, spiritually, the same is true.

  243. If you and I could offer some sort of good work to God

  244. or make some sort of sacrifice on our end

  245. at our initiative to make things right,

  246. then the debt of sin might be uncomfortable,

  247. but it wouldn't be unbearable.

  248. We could handle it.

  249. We could manage it on our own.

  250. If we could scrap up the spiritual capital

  251. to make things right,

  252. well, maybe things aren't that bad.

  253. But if the only way to get right with God

  254. is through the sacrifice of his infinitely worthy son,

  255. then our sin must be more tremendously deep

  256. than we can imagine.

  257. And so it is.

  258. For why else would God give his own son?

  259. Things are really that bad.

  260. You see, the essence of sin

  261. is basically putting ourselves

  262. in the place of God, is it not?

  263. We decide that we can run our lives our own way

  264. without much reference to God as our creator

  265. or our rightful Lord.

  266. And when we do that,

  267. we're essentially telling God

  268. that we are wiser

  269. and more powerful

  270. and more compassionate

  271. and more just than he is,

  272. that we know best.

  273. And that we ought to be the rightful lords

  274. of our lives

  275. and the rightful lords of creation.

  276. Now, of course,

  277. if you happen to show up at work one day

  278. and you tell one of your colleagues at work

  279. that they're a fool

  280. and you can run things better than them,

  281. there might not be much of a price to pay, right?

  282. In fact, you might even get a chance

  283. to prove yourself right.

  284. Okay, you want to do it?

  285. You do it.

  286. All right, I will do a better job.

  287. Thank you very much.

  288. But if you tell your manager

  289. that they're a fool

  290. and you can run things better,

  291. well, the results probably won't be so positive, right?

  292. Try that one out,

  293. medical students,

  294. with your professor

  295. when you're doing a round.

  296. But how much more serious would it be

  297. if you walk into the CEO's office,

  298. berate him as a fool,

  299. and show him

  300. how you unilaterally reinvested

  301. the company's resources

  302. into what you ultimately think is best

  303. because he is so incompetent to do so.

  304. Well, for that offense,

  305. the penalty would most likely be termination.

  306. But think,

  307. is that not what each of us does with God every day?

  308. We might not come right out and say it,

  309. but with every unilateral,

  310. God-ignoring decision,

  311. we functionally call God a fool

  312. and set up ourselves

  313. as the rightful lords of creation.

  314. And if to do such a thing in the workplace

  315. spells the end of our working life,

  316. then surely to do such a thing in the spiritual realm

  317. spells the end of our spiritual life.

  318. The wages of sin,

  319. truly and justly,

  320. is death.

  321. But behold,

  322. John the Baptist says,

  323. in the face of this debt

  324. that we cannot repay,

  325. under this penalty

  326. that we cannot satisfy,

  327. behold, he says,

  328. the Lamb of God.

  329. In grace,

  330. the very one that we offended,

  331. the very one that we spurned

  332. and dishonored and hated,

  333. God himself,

  334. he provides the Lamb.

  335. He provides the way back in.

  336. And that brings us to the second thing

  337. we behold about this Lamb.

  338. If first we behold his source,

  339. that he's the Lamb of God,

  340. then second here,

  341. we behold his accomplishment.

  342. Jesus is the Lamb of God

  343. who takes away our sin.

  344. But how does that work?

  345. How does he bring about

  346. such an accomplishment?

  347. Well,

  348. again,

  349. think of the Passover.

  350. You see,

  351. the Passover Lamb

  352. was sacrificed

  353. as a substitute.

  354. God's terrible judgment

  355. meant the death

  356. of the firstborn.

  357. But in place of the firstborn,

  358. there would be a Lamb

  359. who would stand in its place

  360. and die.

  361. God's judgment

  362. would fall on the Lamb

  363. instead of the child,

  364. and in so doing,

  365. God would prove himself

  366. just and merciful,

  367. just because the penalty of death

  368. still comes down,

  369. and merciful

  370. because the penalty

  371. is borne away by another.

  372. But of course,

  373. an actual,

  374. literal,

  375. bleeding Lamb

  376. could never really serve

  377. as a proper substitute

  378. for a human being, right?

  379. I mean,

  380. we kind of get that.

  381. All those sacrifices

  382. in the Old Testament,

  383. the Passover,

  384. the daily sacrifices

  385. in the Temple,

  386. the annual Day of Atonement,

  387. all that could never

  388. really take away sin, right?

  389. This is what the writer

  390. to Hebrews says.

  391. Look,

  392. if it had really worked,

  393. they would have stopped

  394. doing it

  395. because it would have worked,

  396. but they had to keep doing it

  397. because it didn't really

  398. get to the root

  399. of the problem.

  400. All these sacrifices

  401. were just pointers

  402. to a greater sacrifice.

  403. After all,

  404. what good is an animal

  405. when the real lawbreaker

  406. is a human being?

  407. You know,

  408. as much as you want to try,

  409. you can't pay off

  410. your credit card debt

  411. with a goat

  412. or a few dozen eggs.

  413. I mean,

  414. you can go down

  415. to Bank of America

  416. with a grocery bag

  417. full of animal products

  418. and they are not

  419. going to release you

  420. from the debt

  421. that you accrued.

  422. And friends,

  423. what makes us think

  424. we could pay our spiritual debt

  425. in the same way?

  426. Wouldn't justice

  427. ultimately require

  428. a human

  429. to pay the proper penalty

  430. for human sin?

  431. But then again,

  432. would even a human

  433. be enough?

  434. After all,

  435. this is an offense

  436. against God,

  437. is it not?

  438. This sin

  439. which we have done.

  440. And that means

  441. that this penalty

  442. we are under

  443. is infinite

  444. because it's

  445. an infinite God

  446. whom we've offended.

  447. and who could pay

  448. such an infinite penalty

  449. besides the infinite

  450. God himself?

  451. So you see

  452. this dilemma we're in

  453. when it comes

  454. to the reality

  455. of our sin.

  456. A human must pay it

  457. and yet only God

  458. can pay it.

  459. We need a substitute

  460. that's both fully human

  461. and at the same time

  462. fully God.

  463. And where on earth

  464. are we going to find

  465. such a substitute

  466. like that?

  467. No.

  468. Search the history

  469. of religion, friends.

  470. Look

  471. and look

  472. and you will not find

  473. the one that you need.

  474. But then

  475. the words of John

  476. ring out.

  477. Behold

  478. the Lamb of God

  479. who takes away

  480. the sin of the world.

  481. Jesus Christ,

  482. the Word

  483. become flesh

  484. fully human

  485. and fully God.

  486. He's the one

  487. who can do it.

  488. Do you see now

  489. why Christianity

  490. is so unique?

  491. It is unlike

  492. every other religion.

  493. Deep down

  494. every other religion

  495. or worldview

  496. says one of two things

  497. basically.

  498. Either it says

  499. God or ultimate reality

  500. is so holy

  501. that you have to

  502. earn your way up to him

  503. through your own sacrifice

  504. or your own good works

  505. or your own sincere devotion

  506. whatever it is.

  507. Or it says

  508. God is loving.

  509. He doesn't require justice.

  510. He just accepts

  511. everyone

  512. and everything.

  513. but only Christianity

  514. comes along

  515. and says

  516. no God is holy

  517. and loving.

  518. So holy

  519. that he requires

  520. a payment for sin.

  521. So loving

  522. that he makes

  523. the payment for us

  524. in our place.

  525. Behold the Lamb

  526. who takes away

  527. our sin.

  528. Let's go to the third thing

  529. that we behold

  530. about this Lamb.

  531. Third,

  532. we see not just

  533. his source,

  534. not just his accomplishment

  535. but we see his scope.

  536. Jesus is the Lamb of God

  537. who takes away

  538. the sin

  539. of the world.

  540. Now the world

  541. in John's Gospel

  542. is a bit of a technical term.

  543. It's John's way

  544. of talking about

  545. not just the sort of

  546. big round thing

  547. that we're standing on

  548. or just all the people

  549. out there

  550. but it's John's way

  551. of talking about

  552. human society

  553. arranged

  554. without any reference

  555. to God.

  556. It's his way

  557. of talking about

  558. human society

  559. arranged

  560. in hostile rebellion

  561. against God.

  562. It's a negative term,

  563. the world

  564. for John.

  565. And it is for

  566. this world,

  567. this sinful

  568. fallen world

  569. that Jesus came.

  570. Friends,

  571. here's the good news

  572. that the atoning

  573. work of the Lamb

  574. is not merely

  575. for the religious

  576. and the morally upright.

  577. It's not for the deserving.

  578. It's for the undeserving.

  579. It's for the world.

  580. When Jesus was born

  581. in a manger,

  582. when he lived

  583. a perfect human life

  584. in our midst,

  585. when he died

  586. on a cross,

  587. when he was raised

  588. on the third day

  589. in glory,

  590. when he ascended

  591. to the Father,

  592. all of that was done

  593. not for the sake

  594. of just a special

  595. couple of people

  596. who happened to have

  597. all their ducks in a row

  598. and all their cards right.

  599. No.

  600. It was for lost

  601. and hopeless

  602. and guilty

  603. and flawed

  604. and moral failures

  605. like you and me.

  606. It was for the world.

  607. And it was so

  608. effectual.

  609. It was so powerful.

  610. It was so competent

  611. what he did

  612. that the sins of the world

  613. were taken away.

  614. There's no sin of yours

  615. so great,

  616. so heinous

  617. that his blood,

  618. his sacrificial death

  619. cannot cleanse.

  620. There's no habitual

  621. failure

  622. too repeated

  623. that it cannot

  624. be taken away

  625. by Christ,

  626. the Lamb of God.

  627. All who receive him,

  628. all who believe

  629. in his name,

  630. John says,

  631. their sins

  632. will be taken away.

  633. They'll be reconciled

  634. to God

  635. and made his sons

  636. and daughters.

  637. The curse is lifted.

  638. The guilt

  639. is done away.

  640. Friends,

  641. if you've put your trust

  642. in Jesus,

  643. your sins

  644. have been taken away.

  645. Let me end

  646. with three points

  647. of application.

  648. First,

  649. to you,

  650. if you're spiritually seeking

  651. or if you're new

  652. to Christianity,

  653. as you behold Jesus

  654. this morning,

  655. what do you see?

  656. What are you looking at

  657. when you look at Jesus?

  658. Do you see merely

  659. a good teacher,

  660. a profound spiritual guide,

  661. or are you beginning

  662. to behold Jesus

  663. as he really is?

  664. Are you starting

  665. to see that there's

  666. something unique

  667. about him,

  668. that he's the son of God

  669. and the one and only

  670. Lamb of God?

  671. Friend,

  672. you need to know

  673. that Christianity

  674. isn't ultimately

  675. about new rules

  676. to follow

  677. or new rituals

  678. to perform.

  679. It's ultimately

  680. about uniting

  681. your life

  682. to the crucified

  683. and risen Jesus

  684. through faith

  685. and living

  686. in an ongoing

  687. relationship with him.

  688. So what holds you

  689. back from believing

  690. in Christ?

  691. Why would you not

  692. take hold

  693. of this Lamb of God

  694. who's come in grace

  695. to take away your sin

  696. and reconcile you

  697. to God?

  698. Let me encourage you

  699. to talk to someone

  700. about your questions,

  701. your doubts,

  702. your fears.

  703. If you came with a friend

  704. this morning,

  705. I'm sure they'd be

  706. more than happy

  707. to share with you

  708. their own story,

  709. their own questions,

  710. their own doubts,

  711. their own fears

  712. that they had

  713. as they were coming

  714. to understand

  715. who Jesus is,

  716. as they were beginning

  717. to place their trust

  718. in him.

  719. In fact,

  720. maybe you're ready

  721. to do that this morning

  722. yourself.

  723. And if you're wondering

  724. how to start,

  725. how do I start

  726. in a relationship

  727. with Christ?

  728. There are some prayers

  729. in the bulletin

  730. to help you get started.

  731. Feel free to come up

  732. front after the service.

  733. We'd be happy

  734. to talk with you

  735. and pray with you.

  736. Talk to someone

  737. about what you're

  738. going through.

  739. Let others help you

  740. in this journey

  741. that you're on.

  742. It's not something

  743. you're meant to do

  744. on your own.

  745. Second point of application

  746. for those who are

  747. trusting in Christ already,

  748. as you behold Christ

  749. taking away your sin.

  750. Friends,

  751. let that increase

  752. your desire

  753. to be done

  754. with all the remaining

  755. sin in your life.

  756. Don't hold fast

  757. to the very thing

  758. that Christ died

  759. to take away.

  760. Be done with it.

  761. Be done with sin.

  762. Put it behind you.

  763. He's taken it all away

  764. by his grace.

  765. Now live into that freedom

  766. and that life

  767. that he's purchased

  768. for you.

  769. Behold the Lamb

  770. of God.

  771. Let love for him

  772. increase

  773. and let your love

  774. for sin

  775. wither and die.

  776. Do you want to know

  777. freedom

  778. from your besetting sins?

  779. Keep beholding

  780. the Lamb

  781. who was slain for you.

  782. Keep taking in

  783. the wonder

  784. of his achievement

  785. for you.

  786. Let that stir

  787. in your heart

  788. a passion,

  789. a love for him,

  790. a desire for him,

  791. a desire for the things

  792. of God

  793. and the kingdom

  794. of God

  795. that will cause

  796. the things

  797. of your old life

  798. to pale so much

  799. in comparison.

  800. Third thing,

  801. perhaps this Christmas season

  802. you,

  803. something that you hold

  804. very dear

  805. has been taken away

  806. from you.

  807. but friend,

  808. no matter what losses

  809. you've experienced,

  810. remember,

  811. amidst all of that,

  812. this core reality

  813. that he's taken away

  814. your sins.

  815. Even if you feel like

  816. God has taken away

  817. something very precious

  818. to you,

  819. he's taken away

  820. your sins.

  821. Behold the Lamb

  822. of God.

  823. See how deeply

  824. he loves you.

  825. See how much hope

  826. he has granted you.

  827. You're free from sin.

  828. No matter your

  829. present circumstances,

  830. you have reason

  831. to be thankful.

  832. You have reason

  833. even to rejoice.

  834. You're reconciled

  835. to God.

  836. The curse

  837. has been lifted.

  838. Your guilt is gone.

  839. The Holy Spirit

  840. lives inside of you.

  841. You will one day

  842. reign with him forever.

  843. So friends,

  844. no matter what

  845. has caught your attention

  846. this season,

  847. no matter where

  848. you're tempted to look

  849. amidst the joys

  850. and distractions

  851. and sorrows

  852. and disappointments,

  853. let's fix our gaze

  854. on Jesus,

  855. the Lamb of God

  856. who takes away

  857. the sin of the world.

  858. And in beholding him,

  859. may we testify with John

  860. that this is indeed

  861. the Son of God,

  862. the Savior,

  863. the King.

  864. Let's pray.

  865. Let's pray.

  866. Oh Lord,

  867. we confess that

  868. in our own strength,

  869. in our own

  870. vision,

  871. we don't know you.

  872. Lord,

  873. so often in this passage,

  874. John confesses

  875. that in and of himself,

  876. he didn't recognize

  877. in Jesus

  878. the Messiah,

  879. the Lamb.

  880. God,

  881. that is true of us too.

  882. In our own selves,

  883. we don't see it.

  884. We don't recognize it.

  885. So we need you,

  886. God.

  887. We need you to come

  888. and we need you

  889. to open the eyes

  890. of our hearts

  891. so that we might see him.

  892. Lord,

  893. as we come to the Lord's table,

  894. I pray

  895. that this would be

  896. a means that you use

  897. to help us

  898. to see

  899. and taste

  900. and to behold again

  901. the mighty Lamb of God

  902. who has taken away our sins.

  903. Amen.

  904. Well,

  905. I wonder if those

  906. who are helping to serve

  907. communion would come up.

  908. This is one of the great means

  909. that God has given us

  910. to do exactly

  911. what we've been talking about

  912. this morning,

  913. to behold the Lamb of God.

  914. That Jesus,

  915. on Passover,

  916. gathered with his friends,

  917. with his disciples,

  918. and he took that Passover meal

  919. that was about God

  920. liberating them,

  921. and he gave them

  922. its real interpretation.

  923. He said,

  924. this is what Passover

  925. is really all about.

  926. It's about a Lamb

  927. who's going to be broken,

  928. and it's about blood

  929. that's going to be poured out.

  930. It's about my body

  931. that's going to be broken,

  932. and it's about my blood

  933. that's going to be poured out

  934. for you

  935. and for your sins.

  936. And then he told his followers

  937. to keep doing this act

  938. over and over

  939. and over

  940. and over again.

  941. Why?

  942. Because we're very forgetful people,

  943. aren't we?

  944. It's like we have a hole

  945. and we leak

  946. all the time.

  947. Jesus said,

  948. here it is.

  949. Take this,

  950. eat it,

  951. drink it,

  952. and be filled

  953. with the remembrance

  954. of what I've done for you.

  955. So friend,

  956. if you're here this morning

  957. and you're a Christian,

  958. if you've turned from sin,

  959. if you've turned from

  960. trying to be your own Lord

  961. and trying to be your own Savior

  962. and trying to make

  963. your own way

  964. with your life,

  965. if you've given up

  966. on that pursuit

  967. and you've trusted in Christ

  968. as your hope,

  969. as your treasure,

  970. as your Savior,

  971. if that's true of you,

  972. then this table is for you.

  973. Take this time

  974. to repent of your sins again

  975. and receive this provision

  976. from God

  977. and remember the Lamb

  978. who was slain for you.

  979. If you can say yes to that

  980. and you haven't been baptized,

  981. let me encourage you

  982. to think about baptism.

  983. As we take up the Lord's Supper,

  984. this is a way of identifying

  985. with Jesus

  986. and with his people.

  987. And if you haven't been baptized,

  988. that's your next step

  989. to identify publicly

  990. with Christ in baptism.

  991. Let me read a couple words.

  992. Jesus says this.

  993. He says,

  994. Paul says this

  995. in 1 Corinthians 11.

  996. He says,

  997. For I received from the Lord

  998. what I also delivered to you,

  999. that the Lord Jesus

  1000. on the night

  1001. when he was betrayed

  1002. took bread.

1003. When he had given thanks,

1004. he broke it and said,

  1005. This is my body,

  1006. which is for you.

1007. Do this in remembrance of me.

1008. In the same way also

  1009. he took the cup

  1010. after supper,

  1011. saying,

1012. This cup is the new covenant

  1013. in my blood.

  1014. Do this as often

  1015. as you drink it

  1016. in remembrance of me.

  1017. For as often

1018. as you eat this bread

  1019. and drink this cup,

1020. you proclaim the Lord's death

  1021. until he comes.

  1022. So you see, friends,

1023. this is a table for believers

1024. to proclaim the Lord's death

  1025. until he comes.

  1026. If you're here

  1027. and you're not a believer,

1028. then let me encourage you

1029. to just pass the plates by

  1030. as it comes.

1031. We're going to pass out

  1032. the bread first.

1033. It's going to go around

1034. and then we're going to eat together

1035. and then we're going to pass out

  1036. the cup

1037. and we're going to drink together.

1038. And if you haven't placed

  1039. your faith in Christ,

1040. then just pass the plate by

  1041. and instead,

  1042. use this time,

  1043. use the prayers

  1044. in the bulletin

1045. to do some spiritual seeking,

  1046. some self-assessment.

  1047. Where are you

  1048. with God?

1049. instead of taking this bread

  1050. and taking this cup,

  1051. take Christ

  1052. as yours this morning.

  1053. Let me invite those

  1054. who are downstairs

  1055. to come on up.

  1056. If you're downstairs,

1057. you can come on up

  1058. to the lobby

1059. and we'll serve you there.

  1060. Jonathan,

  1061. would you pray

1062. for the bread for us?

  1063. Thanks.

  1064. Dear Lord God,

  1065. you knew that

  1066. in our human weaknesses

  1067. and sinful preoccupations

  1068. that we would

  1069. neglect to remember

  1070. our Savior.

  1071. and by your grace,

  1072. you have given us

  1073. this act

  1074. and this
