  2. Last week, Pastor Nick gave us an overview of the entire book of Exodus.

  3. So if you weren't here last Sunday, I encourage you to go to the website and listen to his

  4. sermon.

  5. We're looking at the book of Exodus over the next few months because it really is foundational

  6. to the entire Bible.

  7. It sets up the story, the rest of the Old Testament, and it also prepares us for what Jesus will

  8. come to do in the New Testament.

  9. Above all, Exodus shows us the character of God, the God who intervenes and instructs and

  10. indwells His people.

  11. So I encourage you as we journey through Exodus to read along.

  12. Maybe take one day a week in your private prayer time with the Lord to read and meditate on

  13. the passage that we'll be looking at the following Sunday or the previous Sunday.

  14. There's a sermon card in the pews you can take home with you.

  15. If that helps you, you can put it as a bookmark in your Bible.

  16. Now some of you may want to dig a little deeper in Exodus.

  17. You might have questions about the literary structure or the historical background of the

  18. book, or maybe you're wondering about the themes and interpretation.

  19. Let me recommend this book called How to Read Exodus by Tremper Longman.

  20. There's a couple copies on the bookstall downstairs.

  21. If you want to go a step deeper and delve into some of those more complicated questions, let

  22. me recommend that book.

  23. It's a great book to go along with reading through the book together.

  24. So this morning we're going to read…I'm going to start at chapter 1, verse 7.

  25. We read the first seven verses last week, and then our passage this morning is chapter 1,

    Isaiah 1:8

  26. verse 8 to chapter 2, verse 10.

  27. So here we go.

  28. Verse 7, but the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly.

  29. They multiplied and grew exceedingly strong so that the land was filled with them.

  30. Now there arose a new king over Egypt who did not know Joseph.

  31. And he said to his people, behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us.

  32. Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply.

  33. And if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.

  34. Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens.

  35. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Ramses.

  36. But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied, and the more they spread abroad.

  37. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel.

  38. So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves and made their lives bitter

  39. with hard service in mortar and brick and in all kinds of work in the field.

  40. In all their work, they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.

  41. Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,

  42. when you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool,

  43. if it is a son, you shall kill him.

  44. But if it is a daughter, she shall live.

  45. But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them,

  46. but let the male children live.

  47. So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them,

  48. why have you done this and let the male children live?

  49. The midwives said to Pharaoh, because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women,

  50. for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.

  51. So God dealt well with the midwives.

  52. And the people multiplied and grew very strong.

  53. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

  54. Then Pharaoh commanded all his people,

  55. every son that is born to the Hebrews, you shall cast into the Nile,

  56. but you shall let every daughter live.

  57. Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman.

  58. The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child,

  59. she hid him three months.

  60. When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes

  61. and daubed it with bitumen and pitch.

  62. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.

  63. And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him.

  64. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river

  65. while her young women walked beside the river.

  66. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it.

  67. When she opened it, she saw the child.

  68. And behold, the baby was crying.

  69. She took pity on him and said,

  70. This is one of the Hebrews' children.

  71. Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter,

  72. Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?

  73. And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go.

  74. So the girl went and called the child's mother.

  75. And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Take this child away and nurse him for me,

  76. and I will give you your wages.

  77. So the woman took the child and nursed him.

  78. When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son.

  79. She named him Moses because, she said, I drew him out of the water.

  80. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where everything just seems to be getting worse and worse?

  81. You feel taken advantage of, beaten down, left alone to fend for yourself.

  82. Perhaps you're exhausted by ruthless demands at work.

  83. Your reputation is slandered for no apparent reason.

  84. Your health is threatened.

  85. Your children's safety is threatened.

  86. Maybe you keep waiting and praying and hoping for circumstances to turn around,

  87. but very little seems to change for the better.

  88. Maybe you look around and wonder, Where is God in this chaotic mess?

  89. Now, even if that's not your situation right now,

  90. many of our brothers and sisters in Christ throughout the world

  91. face this kind of seemingly unrelenting oppression regularly.

  92. About a month ago, I got an email update from Syed and Jenya.

  93. They were part of our church last year.

  94. They live in Central Asia.

  95. Here's some of their update.

  96. Their own church was recently raided on a Sunday morning by the police.

  97. The pastor had to pay a fine because they teach children in the church.

  98. It's illegal to teach any religion to children in their country.

  99. He also had to pay a fine for storing some Christian books that were not permitted

  100. by the government.

  101. There's a very short list of Christian books that are permitted.

  102. Another pastor in their country has been in jail for several months already

  103. and still awaiting trial.

  104. Most of the other leaders and pastors in the country, they said,

  105. are exhausted physically and tired spiritually and always under serious pressure.

  106. Understandably, many of them just want to leave the country.

  107. Some of them have done so when they have had a chance.

  108. And many Christians throughout history, not just today, have felt the same way.

  109. About 180 years ago, on a Sunday morning, an 18-year-old boy named Frederick Douglass

  110. stood on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay, and he watched the ship sailing unhindered in the distance.

  111. He had never enjoyed such freedom, for he had been born a slave.

  112. He had witnessed and endured bloody beatings, physical and psychological torture,

  113. at the hands of professing Christian masters.

  114. In fact, his most outwardly religious masters had been by far the cruelest.

  115. He had recently found faith in Christ as a teenager.

  116. After reading the book of Job, he actually overheard the godly wife of one of his masters reading the book of Job out loud one evening

  117. and wondered, who is this man who could say, blessed be the name of the Lord after all that happened to him?

  118. And then he found some free black Methodists, and they taught him the way of salvation in Christ.

  119. But on that Sunday morning, he cried out to the god whom he had come to trust and believe in,

  120. Oh, why was I born a man of whom to make a brute?

  121. The glad ship is gone.

  122. She hides in the dim distance.

  123. I am left in the hottest hell of unending slavery.

  124. Oh, God, save me.

  125. God, deliver me.

  126. Let me be free.

  127. Is there any god?

  128. Why am I a slave?

  129. Why am I a slave?

  130. That's a question you might be asking when you read this section of Exodus.

  131. Is there a god, and if so, where is he?

  132. Because the first thing we see in this passage is Pharaoh's designs for evil.

  133. We see three successive and increasingly vicious attacks against the people of God.

  134. First, verse 8 to 14, Pharaoh appoints taskmasters to afflict them with heavy burdens.

  135. He enslaves them and works them ruthlessly.

  136. Then, in verses 15 to 21, Pharaoh launches a secret campaign,

  137. quietly instructing the Hebrew midwives to terminate the life of every Hebrew son.

  138. Third, in verse 22, Pharaoh openly commands all his people to throw every son born to the Hebrews into the Nile River.

  139. We go from ruthless enslavement to secret infanticide to public genocide.

  140. It's terrible, and it only seems to get worse.

  141. Now, let's look in more detail at Pharaoh's designs for evil, his three evil designs.

  142. First, verse 8,

  143. Now, there arose a new king over Egypt who did not know Joseph.

  144. Now, the story of Joseph, for those if you're not familiar with it,

  145. it's found at the end of the book of Genesis in chapters 37 to 50 of Genesis.

  146. Joseph was one of Jacob's 12 sons.

  147. Once, he became a high official in the Egyptian government,

  148. and he brought his whole family down to Egypt in a time of famine.

  149. With the Pharaoh's permission, Joseph settled his family in the land of Goshen.

  150. They were given property of their own in that district.

  151. So, for many years, the children of Israel were protected by the agreement that Pharaoh had made with Joseph.

  152. They made their living as farmers and keepers of livestock.

  153. But this new Pharaoh had forgotten, intentionally or not, that agreement.

  154. See, the promises of Pharaoh, unlike the promises of God, were subject to change from one generation to the next.

  155. And so, this Pharaoh had no loyalty to Joseph and the children of Israel.

  156. On the contrary, he perceived and portrayed them as a threat.

  157. But, verses 9 to 10, this is sort of a speech to his cabinet.

  158. And Pharaoh says,

  159. These are outsiders.

  160. They are prone to ally with our enemies and either run away,

  161. or possibly that word escape could be translated take over our land.

  162. Now, some of you might be wondering,

  163. who was this new king of Egypt?

  164. Scholars have spent a lot of time researching and debating this question

  165. because Exodus doesn't name any of the pharaohs it describes.

  166. Some scholars think this pharaoh was a man named Thutmose III in the 15th century BC.

  167. Others think this pharaoh was Ramses II in the 13th century BC.

  168. One of the cities in verse 11 is named after him.

  169. Those are sort of the two main theories out there.

  170. I don't have time to go into all the details, but I'm happy to discuss that.

  171. Tremper Longin's book goes into some detail about that historical background.

  172. But some skeptical scholars have said instead,

  173. Exodus doesn't name the pharaoh because it's just a fairy tale.

  174. It's a nice story, but it probably never happened.

  175. After all, we don't have any evidence outside of the Bible

  176. for the Israelites and their exodus from Egypt.

  177. But there's actually a very good reason

  178. why the pharaohs are never named in the book of Exodus.

  179. Not because they never existed, but because in the ancient Near East,

  180. referring to someone by name, especially in a written document,

  181. was a way of honoring them and preserving their memory in high regard.

  182. In the first five chapters of Exodus,

  183. there are three groups of people who are mentioned by name.

  184. Jacob and his family,

  185. at the beginning of chapter 1.

  186. Moses and his family, throughout chapters 2 to 4.

  187. And the Hebrew midwives in verse 15 of this chapter.

  188. We'll get to them in a bit.

  189. And then most prominently, the Lord reveals his name in chapter 3.

  190. That's sort of the biggest deal of all.

  191. Exodus doesn't name the pharaoh,

  192. not because he never really existed,

  193. but because Exodus isn't written to give honor to the pharaoh.

  194. There's also a very good reason

  195. why we don't have any other historical records

  196. that tell the story of the Exodus.

  197. For one thing,

  198. even today, 90% of the population of Egypt

  199. lives very close to the Nile River.

  200. It's a wet region.

  201. We have very few ancient documents from that area

  202. because they don't preserve well.

  203. And furthermore,

  204. ancient Egyptian historians,

  205. like most other ancient historians,

  206. were notorious for recording

  207. the high points and the victories

  208. and the glories of their nation.

  209. They tended to ignore and overlook

  210. and never write about

  211. the defeats and embarrassing moments.

  212. Why would they write about this people

  213. who grew up within their land

  214. and then successfully left?

  215. And Pharaoh tried to pursue them

  216. and a bunch of Pharaoh's army

  217. was drowned in the Red Sea.

  218. That's about the most embarrassing story

  219. you can come up with.

  220. You see, among ancient literature,

  221. the Bible's unusual

  222. because it tells the story of a people,

  223. but it doesn't hide their flaws.

  224. It doesn't overlook their failures.

  225. It doesn't deny their embarrassing moments.

  226. In fact, we'll see one of those failures

  227. of Moses himself next week,

  228. later in chapter 2.

  229. So there's no need to be intimidated

  230. when skeptical scholars claim

  231. that Exodus has no historical basis.

  232. It's entirely reasonable to affirm,

  233. as traditional Jews and Christians always have,

  234. that Exodus describes real events

  235. that happened in history.

  236. Now, that's a bit of an aside.

  237. Getting back to the story,

  238. the people of Israel find themselves

  239. in a bad situation.

  240. Instead of being under Pharaoh's protection,

  241. as they were during the time of Joseph,

  242. they are now under his suspicion.

  243. Instead of making a living independently

  244. as keepers of livestock,

  245. they are now slave laborers

  246. building Pharaoh's military empire.

  247. That word store cities in verse 11

  248. could also mean fortified military settlements.

  249. Some of these cities had large temples

  250. and palaces and government buildings,

  251. and these are the ones that they were building.

  252. And Pharaoh's strategy here

  253. is not only to use the Israelites

  254. to move forward his building projects,

  255. but oppress them as a means

  256. of population control.

  257. All right, practically how might this work?

  258. Well, you take the men away from their families,

  259. send them away to build these store cities.

  260. That at least hinders the reproductive abilities.

  261. The farming and livestock back home

  262. might suffer because fewer people would be around.

  263. There'd be a lot of work

  264. and fewer people around to take care of the animals

  265. and cultivate the land.

  266. Then you work the men ruthlessly,

  267. and they'll eventually get weak and sick

  268. and gradually die off.

  269. That's what Pharaoh's up to.

  270. Verse 13 and 14, the word work

  271. is repeated five times.

  272. One commentator said,

  273. each word in verse 13 and 14

  274. is like another blow from a slave driver's whip.

  275. They ruthlessly made the people work.

  276. They made their lives bitter with hard work.

  277. In all kinds of work.

  278. In all their work.

  279. They ruthlessly made them work as slaves.

  280. And these verses are not an exaggeration.

  281. We do have an ancient Egyptian document

  282. that describes the cruelty of Pharaoh's officials

  283. when they came to inspect

  284. those who were seen as Pharaoh's slaves.

  285. Here's an excerpt from it.

  286. The scribe, that is the Pharaoh's official,

  287. surveys the harvest.

  288. He's coming to inspect a farmer

  289. who owes him some grain.

  290. Attendants are behind him with staffs,

  291. Nubians with clubs.

  292. Give grain.

  293. There is none.

  294. The farmer is beaten savagely.

  295. He is bound, thrown in the well,

  296. submerged head down.

  297. His wife is bound in his presence.

  298. His children are in fetters.

  299. This is the kind of ruthless cruelty,

  300. senseless discrimination

  301. that the Israelites were experiencing.

  302. And that was only the beginning.

  303. Verse 15, it gets worse.

  304. Pharaoh summons the Hebrew midwives.

  305. Most likely these weren't the only midwives,

  306. but rather the head ones.

  307. He says to them,

  308. when you serve as midwife

  309. to the Hebrew children,

  310. to the Hebrew women,

  311. see the child being born.

  312. If it's a son, kill him.

  313. If it's a daughter, let her live.

  314. Now notice,

  315. this was not a public campaign.

  316. It was a private directive.

  317. Pharaoh says,

  318. nobody else needs to know about this.

  319. You could probably just strangle

  320. the baby boy as he comes out of the womb.

  321. The mother might not even know the difference.

  322. Besides,

  323. perhaps he phrases it this way,

  324. what hope did a Hebrew boy have

  325. for a good life?

  326. He would just grow up to be a slave

  327. and be worked to death.

  328. Perhaps it would be merciful

  329. not to bring such a child into the world.

  330. Of course, if Pharaoh lived in the modern world,

  331. he could have done it all

  332. even before the babies were born.

  333. require a blood test

  334. toward the end of the first trimester

  335. and based on the results,

  336. counsel the mother to abort.

  337. In Iceland and Denmark,

  338. 98% of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome

  339. never see the light of day.

  340. The United States is probably closer

  341. to 70 or 75%.

  342. Evil comes in many forms,

  343. whether it's racism and slavery

  344. or hostility toward immigrants

  345. and separating them from their families

  346. or killing off the weakest

  347. and least noticed ones

  348. through abortion

  349. or physician-assisted suicide.

  350. Most of us here would readily recognize

  351. slavery, infanticide,

  352. and ethnic cleansing as evils.

  353. But evil always presents itself deceptively

  354. as something good,

  355. rational,

  356. acceptable,

  357. perhaps necessary.

  358. Verse 22,

  359. Pharaoh makes a public proclamation.

  360. Every son born to the Hebrews

  361. throw into the Nile.

  362. We hear that,

  363. and that sounds,

  364. rightly,

  365. horrendously evil.

  366. But in Egypt,

  367. the Nile River

  368. was worshipped as a god.

  369. The giver and taker of life

  370. it was recognized as.

  371. And so Pharaoh's decree

  372. might well have been presented

  373. with a religious justification.

  374. The Nile is summoning Hebrew boys.

  375. If she does not receive them,

  376. our whole nation

  377. will be under her wrath.

  378. Might have sounded a lot more plausible

  379. than it would to us.

  380. What makes evil seem good

  381. or acceptable,

  382. then or now?

  383. It's the idols that we worship

  384. and cherish.

  385. In the ancient world,

  386. the nation and the tribe

  387. were the prevalent idols.

  388. That's what Pharaoh appealed to

  389. in verses 9 and 10.

  390. Those idols haven't gone away.

  391. In the modern world,

  392. we have another idol.

  393. It's called personal autonomy.

  394. The freedom to do

  395. whatever I want

  396. with my own body.

  397. And that idol,

  398. like every other idol,

  399. distorts our perspective.

  400. And it makes us think

  401. that all kinds of dehumanizing

  402. and destructive behaviors

  403. are not that bad after all.

  404. Or even pretty good.

  405. You know, education alone

  406. doesn't rescue us

  407. from this danger.

  408. Adolf Hitler came to power

  409. in one of the best educated

  410. and most technologically advanced

  411. and culturally sophisticated

  412. nations of his time.

  413. And he followed the same

  414. general pattern

  415. as this Pharaoh.

  416. From anti-Semitic rhetoric

  417. to increasingly restrictive policies

  418. around work

  419. to secret plots

  420. to open violence.

  421. Pharaoh's evil designs

  422. have been repeated

  423. over and over

  424. in the course of history

  425. on small and large scales.

  426. Because they're not just

  427. Pharaoh's designs.

  428. Behind Pharaoh's designs

  429. were the designs

  430. of Satan himself.

  431. Whom the Bible calls

  432. the father of lies.

  433. The enemy who seeks to steal

  434. and kill and destroy.

  435. You might say,

  436. where do I get that idea

  437. that Satan's behind this?

  438. Revelation chapter 12.

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  439. Revelation gives us a glimpse

  440. into some of the heavenly

  441. and spiritual realities

  442. behind earthly events.

  443. And in Revelation 12,

  444. there's a vision of a dragon

  445. who is identified as Satan,

  446. who is seeking to devour

  447. the male offspring

  448. of a pregnant woman.

  449. The woman represents

  450. the people of God.

  451. The point is,

  452. behind Pharaoh and Herod,

  453. Hitler and Stalin,

  454. all of the tyrants

  455. who dehumanize

  456. and persecute God's people

  457. and all of the people

  458. with a lot less power,

  459. but who still try

  460. to do the same things,

  461. is Satan himself.

  462. The Apostle Paul says,

  463. we are not unaware

  464. of Satan's designs.

  465. We should not be unaware

  466. of them.

  467. That's the first thing

  468. we see this morning,

  469. and it's quite sobering.

  470. Pharaoh's and Satan's

  471. designs for evil.

  472. But we also see

  473. a second thing

  474. in this passage.

  475. We see God's intervention

  476. for good.

  477. Now, God's intervention

  478. for good is not evident

  479. at first glance.

  480. You read through

  481. this whole passage,

  482. there are no words

  483. spoken by God,

  484. no prophetic encouragements,

  485. no wise explanations

  486. for why things are happening

  487. the way they are.

  488. Now, if you go back

  489. to Genesis,

  490. in Genesis 15,

  491. God spoke to Abraham

  492. and said his descendants

  493. would be enslaved

  494. and mistreated

  495. in a country not their own,

  496. but then he would

  497. be faithful to them

  498. and bring them up

  499. out of it.

  500. And in Genesis 46,

  501. God had spoken to Jacob

  502. and said,

  503. don't be afraid

  504. to go down to Egypt,

  505. for there I will make you

  506. into a great nation.

  507. I myself will go down

  508. with you there,

  509. and I will also

  510. bring you up again.

  511. But that was hundreds

  512. of years ago.

  513. Most likely,

  514. at least some of the

  515. children of Israel

  516. had passed down

  517. these promises

  518. from one generation

  519. to another,

  520. but for so very long,

  521. God was apparently silent.

  522. And it might have seemed

  523. that he was nearly absent.

  524. There's only one action

  525. explicitly ascribed to God

  526. in this narrative

  527. in verse 20 and 21.

  528. God dealt well

  529. with the midwives.

  530. Verse 21,

  531. and because the midwives

  532. feared God,

  533. God gave them families.

  534. God allowed two midwives,

  535. presumably older

  536. and previously infertile,

  537. to have children

  538. of their own.

  539. You might say,

  540. well, that's nice for them,

  541. but it doesn't do much good

  542. when a people are enslaved

  543. and on the brink

  544. of being slaughtered.

  545. But here's what I want to say.

  546. Even though it doesn't

  547. seem like it at first glance,

  548. when God is present

  549. and active

  550. and working out

  551. His plans for good

  552. in every part of this story.

  553. When we take a closer look,

  554. we see that God

  555. is intervening for good

  556. and undermining

  557. each of Pharaoh's evil designs.

  558. So let me show you

  559. how God is intervening for good

  560. in each of these three situations.

  561. First, in the midst

  562. of oppression and slavery,

  563. God causes supernatural growth.

  564. Verse 12,

  565. the more they were oppressed,

  566. the more they multiplied,

  567. and the more they spread abroad.

  568. Now that sentence

  569. is not what you would expect

  570. in the rest of this paragraph.

  571. What you would expect

  572. this sentence to say

  573. is the more they multiplied,

  574. the more they were oppressed.

  575. That would be very natural.

  576. It's happened over and over

  577. in all kinds of places in history.

  578. An immigrant population

  579. grows more rapidly

  580. than the majority culture.

  581. Majority culture

  582. feels afraid and threatened.

  583. Those people are trying

  584. to take over our country.

  585. They're moving

  586. into our neighborhood.

  587. Verse 12,

  588. the Egyptians were in dread

  589. in fear of the Israelites.

  590. That is all totally natural

  591. in a fallen world

  592. where human pride

  593. and fear rule the day.

  594. But the first half

  595. of verse 12

  596. is not natural.

  597. It's describing

  598. a supernatural

  599. intervention of God.

  600. God, the Creator

  601. and Redeemer,

  602. is blessing His people

  603. with overflowing

  604. and abundant life

  605. even in the most humanly

  606. unlikely circumstances.

  607. And you know,

  608. this pattern

  609. has often been repeated

  610. in the history

  611. of the church.

  612. Through periods

  613. of affliction

  614. and persecution

  615. and opposition,

  616. Jesus in supernatural

  617. and unexplainable ways

  618. grows His church.

  619. You can see it

  620. in the New Testament.

  621. One example,

  622. 1 Corinthians 16, 9,

  623. the Apostle Paul wrote,

  624. I'm staying here

  625. in Ephesus

  626. because a wide open door

  627. for effective work

  628. has opened to me

  629. and there are many adversaries.

  630. In the early church,

  631. Tertullian,

  632. I think it was Tertullian,

  633. said,

  634. the blood of the martyrs

  635. is the seed

  636. of the church.

  637. The Roman emperors

  638. put Christians to death,

  639. but the church

  640. kept on multiplying

  641. and spreading.

  642. We can see it

  643. in the modern world too.

  644. Just one example,

  645. China became a communist nation

  646. in 1949

  647. and all the Western missionaries

  648. were expelled.

  649. At that time,

  650. there were about

  651. four million Chinese Christians.

  652. But despite intense persecution

  653. at times

  654. and ongoing legal restrictions,

  655. there are by some estimates

  656. 50 to 100 million

  657. Chinese Christians today.

  658. The church has grown

  659. and flourished

  660. in the midst of oppression

  661. and persecution.

  662. Let me say to you,

  663. if you are experiencing

  664. spiritual attack

  665. and oppression,

  666. it usually means

  667. one of two things.

  668. One possibility

  669. is that you are engaged

  670. in a pattern of sin

  671. that is giving the devil

  672. a foothold,

  673. an ongoing foothold

  674. in your life,

  675. and you're not repenting of it.

  676. And if that's you,

  677. you need to repent now,

  678. today.

  679. Don't delay.

  680. But the second possibility

  681. is that you're experiencing

  682. spiritual attack

  683. because you're doing

  684. something right.

  685. You're seeking first

  686. the kingdom of God

  687. and the devil

  688. is not happy with that.

  689. And in that case,

  690. you need to know

  691. that in the midst

  692. of affliction,

  693. God causes supernatural growth

  694. in ways that

  695. you will not even

  696. be able to explain.

  697. In the kingdom of God,

  698. suffering and joy,

  699. oppression and growth

  700. are not opposites.

  701. They often come

  702. as a package deal.

  703. One of the reasons

  704. God brings affliction

  705. into our lives

  706. is so we don't get

  707. too comfortable

  708. here in this world.

  709. It makes us look up

  710. and call out

  711. for our Savior.

  712. And when we call out

  713. to Him

  714. in the midst

  715. of being oppressed

  716. or opposed

  717. or attacked,

  718. His grace

  719. is sufficient.

  720. Christians throughout history

  721. can testify to it.

  722. People here in this room

  723. can testify to it.

  724. His grace

  725. is sufficient

  726. for you

  727. in your weakness

  728. when you feel

  729. attacked

  730. and opposed

  731. and oppressed.

  732. Don't be afraid

  733. and don't be discouraged.

  734. God brings

  735. supernatural growth

  736. even in the most

  737. unlikely

  738. and hard

  739. circumstances.

  740. That's the first way

  741. we see God intervening.

  742. The second way

  743. we see God intervening

  744. for good

  745. is through courageous

  746. women

  747. who fear God

  748. more than man.

  749. Now notice

  750. throughout this passage

  751. the primary focus

  752. of Pharaoh's attacks

  753. is on

  754. the Hebrew men

  755. and on the boys

  756. who would one day

  757. grow up to become

  758. men.

  759. Satan seems to try

  760. different tactics

  761. in this regard.

  762. In the Garden of Eden

  763. he focused his attack

  764. on Eve

  765. and successfully

  766. undermined Adam

  767. and their marriage

  768. in the process.

  769. But here Satan

  770. takes aim

  771. at the men.

  772. Practically speaking

  773. Pharaoh knew

  774. that if he could get

  775. the men of Israel

  776. out of the picture

  777. then the women

  778. and children

  779. would be more vulnerable.

  780. And spiritually speaking

  781. Satan knows

  782. that if he can get

  783. the men of God

  784. spiritually off track

  785. that the church

  786. as a whole

  787. will be more vulnerable.

  788. And Satan

  789. has often been successful

  790. in his attempts

  791. to spiritually

  792. enslave

  793. and oppress

  794. Christian men.

  795. Men

  796. just as Pharaoh

  797. enslaved

  798. the Israelites

  799. physically

  800. Satan wants

  801. to enslave

  802. you spiritually.

  803. He wants

  804. to make you

  805. a slave

  806. to lust

  807. and pornography

  808. and self-gratification.

  809. He wants

  810. to make you

  811. a slave

  812. to your ambition

  813. and your work

  814. so that you have

  815. no time

  816. or energy

  817. for the worship

  818. of God.

  819. He wants

  820. to make you

  821. a captive

  822. to anger

  823. and rage.

  824. He wants

  825. to isolate

  826. you from

  827. intimate friendship

  828. with your wife

  829. and from

  830. genuine fellowship

  831. with your brothers

  832. in Christ.

  833. He wants

  834. to keep you

  835. perpetually immature

  836. and noncommittal.

  837. A boy

  838. who can shave

  839. and drive

  840. but who can't

  841. make and keep

  842. promises.

  843. Men

  844. we are

  845. under attack.

  846. Let us

  847. not be

  848. unaware

  849. of Satan's

  850. schemes.

  851. If

  852. Satan

  853. can disable

  854. us

  855. spiritually

  856. the women

  857. and children

  858. in the church

  859. will suffer

  860. and bear

  861. the burden.

  862. But there's

  863. good news

  864. because we

  865. have something

  866. that the men

  867. of Israel

  868. didn't

  869. yet.

  870. The men

  871. of Israel

  872. could not

  873. protect

  874. or save

  875. themselves

  876. from Pharaoh's

  877. oppression.

  878. They could

  879. only wait

  880. for God

  881. to raise

  882. up a

  883. Savior

  884. which he

  885. would.

  886. But our

  887. Savior

  888. has come.

  889. Our elder

  890. brother

  891. Jesus Christ

  892. has conquered

  893. sin and

  894. death for

  895. us.

  896. We do

  897. not need

  898. to be

  899. enslaved

  900. and oppressed

  901. by Satan

  902. anymore.

  903. So brothers

  904. live in the

  905. freedom

  906. for which

  907. Christ has

  908. set you

  909. free.

  910. Resist

  911. the devil

  912. and stand

  913. firm in

  914. your faith.

  915. faith.

  916. But what

  917. we see

  918. in this

  919. section

  920. is that

  921. when the

  922. men of

  923. God are

  924. oppressed

  925. and when

  926. the boys

  927. are threatened

  928. God

  929. raises up

  930. women

  931. of courage

  932. and faith

  933. who fear

  934. God

  935. and don't

  936. give in

  937. to the

  938. pressures

  939. of the

  940. world.

  941. Verse

  942. 17

  943. the midwives

  944. feared

  945. God.

  946. They did

  947. not do

  948. as the

  949. king of

  950. Egypt

  951. commanded

  952. them

  953. but let

  954. the male

  955. children

  956. live.

  957. Now the

  958. midwives

  959. had every

  960. reason to

  961. be afraid

  962. of Pharaoh.

  963. He had

  964. absolute

  965. power over

  966. them.

  967. They had

  968. no legal

  969. protections,

  970. no court

  971. of appeal,

  972. but they

  973. recognized that

  974. there was a

  975. higher authority

  976. than Pharaoh.

  977. They feared

  978. God

  979. more than

  980. they feared

  981. the king.

  982. They were

  983. like the

  984. apostles in

  985. the book

  986. of Acts

  987. who said

  988. we must

  989. obey God

  990. rather than

  991. men and

  992. God blessed

  993. the obedience

  994. of these

  995. faithful women.

  996. Pharaoh

  997. summoned

  998. them,

  999. verse 19,

  1000. to ask

  1001. why aren't

  1002. you following

  1003. through with

  1004. my decree

  1005. and they

  1006. had a

  1007. ready answer.

  1008. Now people

  1009. have debated

  1010. were they

  1011. telling a

  1012. lie?

  1013. If so,

  1014. was that

  1015. okay because

  1016. Pharaoh was

  1017. because innocent

  1018. lies were at

  1019. stake or

  1020. did God do

  1021. good to them

  1022. in spite of

  1023. their lie or

  1024. was there

  1025. some truth

  1026. to what

  1027. they said

  1028. even if

  1029. it wasn't

  1030. the whole

  1031. story.

  1032. Maybe the

  1033. Hebrew women

  1034. really were

  1035. more active

  1036. and involved

  1037. in their

  1038. labor while

  1039. most Egyptian

  1040. women just

  1041. laid back

  1042. and waited

  1043. for the

  1044. midwife to

  1045. tell them

  1046. what to

  1047. do.

  1048. Who knows?

  1049. We don't

  1050. really know.

  1051. Perhaps the

  1052. midwives

  1053. conveniently

  1054. arrived late

  1055. after having

  1056. given prior

  1057. instructions to

  1058. the expectant

  1059. mother and

  1060. another woman

  1061. nearby beforehand.

  1062. Right?

  1063. Perhaps it's

  1064. a clever answer

  1065. but not

  1066. necessarily

  1067. false.

  1068. We may

  1069. not know

  1070. with

  1071. certainty

  1072. how to

  1073. interpret

  1074. their

  1075. answer

  1076. but

  1077. Pharaoh

  1078. seems

  1079. stymied

  1080. by it.

  1081. He doesn't

  1082. punish them

  1083. and verse

  1084. 20 seems

  1085. to indicate

  1086. that God

  1087. was pleased

  1088. with their

  1089. answer too.

  1090. So God

  1091. dealt well

  1092. with the

  1093. midwives

  1094. and because

  1095. they feared

  1096. God

  1097. he gave

  1098. them families

  1099. of their

  1100. own.

  1101. At the

  1102. macro level

  1103. that may

  1104. seem like

  1105. an insignificant

  1106. thing

  1107. but God

  1108. is not

  1109. just concerned

  1110. about macroeconomic

  1111. trends.

  1112. He's

  1113. also concerned

  1114. about the

  1115. small people.

  1116. He's

  1117. concerned about

  1118. your individual

  1119. life.

  1120. If you've

  1121. been trusting

  1122. God through

  1123. infertility or

  1124. unwanted

  1125. singleness

  1126. it's no

  1127. small thing

  1128. if God

  1129. provides you

  1130. with a

  1131. spouse

  1132. or with a

  1133. family

  1134. through childbirth

  1135. or through

  1136. adoption.

  1137. God is

  1138. faithful and

  1139. merciful to

  1140. women like the

  1141. midwives who

  1142. find themselves

  1143. hard pressed

  1144. with no one

  1145. to protect

  1146. them and

  1147. they stand

  1148. firm and

  1149. fear God

  1150. more than

  1151. they fear

  1152. men.

  1153. God honors

  1154. these midwives

  1155. obedience not

  1156. only by giving

  1157. them a family

  1158. of their own

  1159. but he bestows

  1160. upon them the

  1161. honor of being

  1162. named and

  1163. having their

  1164. names preserved

  1165. in God's

  1166. very own

  1167. word.

  1168. Shiphrah

  1169. and Puah

  1170. verse 15

  1171. we know

  1172. their names.

  1173. We don't know

  1174. the pharaoh's

  1175. name.

  1176. Scholars will

  1177. debate that

  1178. forever but

  1179. we know their

  1180. names and

  1181. we know that

  1182. God named

  1183. them because

  1184. God is

  1185. honoring their

  1186. faithful obedience.

  1187. Like Mary who

  1188. poured ointment

  1189. on Jesus'

  1190. feet and

  1191. Jesus said

  1192. wherever the

  1193. gospel is

  1194. preached what

  1195. she has

  1196. done her

  1197. sacrifice will

  1198. be recognized.

  1199. Her story will

  1200. be told in

  1201. memory of

  1202. her.

  1203. So women

  1204. stand firm

  1205. in Christ

  1206. even if you

  1207. have nobody

  1208. else beside

  1209. you.

  1210. You have

  1211. Jesus and

  1212. he will make

  1213. you strong.

  1214. So in the

  1215. midst of

  1216. oppression God

  1217. brings supernatural

  1218. growth.

  1219. When the men

  1220. and boys are

  1221. threatened God

  1222. raises up women

  1223. of faith.

  1224. And third,

  1225. the third way we

  1226. see God

  1227. intervening for

  1228. good is

  1229. delivering the

  1230. baby who

  1231. would one day

  1232. deliver his

  1233. people.

  1234. Chapter two,

  1235. the focus of the

  1236. story narrows.

  1237. We've gone from

  1238. all the people of

  1239. Israel to the

  1240. midwives of the

  1241. Hebrews to a

  1242. three-month-old

  1243. baby.

  1244. His parents had

  1245. hidden him as

  1246. long as they

  1247. could.

  1248. His cries had

  1249. become too loud

  1250. most likely.

  1251. If he was

  1252. found in their

  1253. house, that

  1254. would be it.

  1255. And so his

  1256. mom made a

  1257. covered basket.

  1258. The word basket

  1259. is actually the

  1260. same word

  1261. translated ark

  1262. in Genesis

  1263. chapter six in

  1264. the story of

  1265. Noah.

  1266. She placed the

  1267. ark by the

  1268. reeds on the

  1269. side of the

  1270. river.

  1271. She wasn't

  1272. abandoning him.

  1273. She wasn't

  1274. turning her back

  1275. on him.

  1276. The basket was

  1277. in the reeds.

  1278. It's not going

  1279. to float away.

  1280. And Moses'

  1281. sister was

  1282. stationed there

  1283. to watch

  1284. carefully.

  1285. It's probably

  1286. a common

  1287. place where

  1288. women came to

  1289. wash their

  1290. clothing and

  1291. bathe in the

  1292. river.

  1293. Some people

  1294. have even

  1295. compared it to

  1296. leaving a baby

  1297. on the doorsteps

  1298. of a hospital.

  1299. Somebody will

  1300. likely take care

  1301. of it if you

  1302. are unable to.

  1303. Perhaps she

  1304. planned when the

  1305. coast was clear

  1306. to come back

  1307. and nurse him.

  1308. We have no

  1309. idea.

  1310. Furthermore,

  1311. she had

  1312. technically

  1313. complied with

  1314. the king's

  1315. edict.

  1316. The letter

  1317. but not the

  1318. spirit.

  1319. Now,

  1320. nobody knew

  1321. it then,

  1322. but God's

  1323. redemptive plans,

  1324. not just for

  1325. the people of

  1326. Israel but for

  1327. the entire world,

  1328. were hanging on

  1329. a helpless baby

  1330. in a homemade

  1331. ark.

  1332. God's plan of

  1333. redemption starts

  1334. in unexpected

  1335. places.

  1336. A baby lying

  1337. in an ark.

  1338. A baby lying

  1339. in a manger.

  1340. Sometimes God's

  1341. redemptive plans

  1342. seem to hang on

  1343. a very thin and

  1344. fragile thread,

  1345. but the hand that

  1346. holds that thread

  1347. is a strong and

  1348. steady hand,

  1349. and if you have

  1350. turned in faith

  1351. to Jesus Christ,

  1352. if you have cast

  1353. yourself and your

  1354. future on him

  1355. in your weakness

  1356. and your fragility,

  1357. the same hand

  1358. that was holding

  1359. on to Moses

  1360. is holding

  1361. on to you,

  1362. and he won't

  1363. let you go.

  1364. How does God

  1365. deliver Moses

  1366. from the water

  1367. again?

  1368. In an unexpected

  1369. way,

  1370. by the hand

  1371. of Pharaoh's

  1372. own daughter.

  1373. She wasn't

  1374. a fellow Hebrew.

  1375. She couldn't

  1376. personally sympathize

  1377. with their

  1378. precarious

  1379. social situation.

  1380. She had little

  1381. to gain and

  1382. everything to lose,

  1383. but she had

  1384. compassion.

  1385. She didn't

  1386. abandon the baby

  1387. but adopted him

  1388. as her own.

  1389. She even

  1390. paid his

  1391. mother to

  1392. nurse him.

  1393. You see,

  1394. she doesn't

  1395. treat the

  1396. Hebrews as

  1397. slaves.

  1398. She paid

  1399. for child

  1400. care out

  1401. of her own

  1402. pocket.

  1403. She put

  1404. herself at

  1405. risk to

  1406. raise this

  1407. child.

  1408. Now,

  1409. you might

  1410. ask,

  1411. wouldn't

  1412. Pharaoh have

  1413. gotten word

  1414. of this?

  1415. Well,

  1416. one Pharaoh

  1417. was reported

  1418. to have 200

  1419. children,

  1420. including 111

  1421. sons,

  1422. and 59

  1423. daughters

  1424. whose names

  1425. are recorded.

  1426. So,

  1427. the vast

  1428. majority of

  1429. Pharaoh's

  1430. children probably

  1431. would not

  1432. have seen him

  1433. very often,

  1434. but still,

  1435. it was a

  1436. risk.

  1437. What we see

  1438. in Pharaoh's

  1439. daughter is

  1440. this.

  1441. God's salvation

  1442. is for people

  1443. from every

  1444. nation of the

  1445. world.

  1446. No ethnic

  1447. group is

  1448. excluded.

  1449. Maybe you,

  1450. like Pharaoh's

  1451. daughter,

  1452. come from a

  1453. family that is

  1454. completely opposed,

  1455. most,

  1456. as Pharaoh

  1457. was,

  1458. to Christianity,

  1459. to God's

  1460. people.

  1461. But there's a

  1462. place in God's

  1463. kingdom in His

  1464. family for you,

  1465. as there was for

  1466. Pharaoh's daughter.

  1467. She named the

  1468. child Moses.

  1469. Moses was a

  1470. common Egyptian

  1471. name.

  1472. It simply means

  1473. son.

  1474. But verse 10

  1475. points out that

  1476. Moshe also sounds

  1477. like the Hebrew

  1478. mashah,

  1479. to draw out.

  1480. The one who

  1481. was drawn out,

  1482. delivered from

  1483. the waters of

  1484. the Nile,

  1485. would one day

  1486. grow up to

  1487. deliver God's

  1488. people through

  1489. the waters of

  1490. the Red Sea.

  1491. One commentator

  1492. put it this way,

  1493. this child,

  1494. once doomed to

  1495. death by

  1496. Pharaoh's decree,

  1497. would become

  1498. the very instrument

  1499. of Pharaoh's

  1500. destruction and

  1501. the means through

  1502. which all Israel

  1503. would escape,

  1504. not only Pharaoh's

  1505. decree, but Egypt

  1506. itself.

  1507. Do you see?

  1508. Every evil

  1509. design of

  1510. Pharaoh,

  1511. God intervened

  1512. for good.

  1513. When the people

  1514. were oppressed

  1515. and enslaved,

  1516. God supernaturally

  1517. grew them.

  1518. When the men

  1519. and boys were

  1520. under attack,

  1521. God raised up

  1522. women of faith.

  1523. And when the

  1524. Pharaoh summoned

  1525. every Egyptian

  1526. to throw every

  1527. Hebrew son into

  1528. the Nile,

  1529. God in his

  1530. providence

  1531. delivered the

  1532. one who would

  1533. one day deliver

  1534. his people by

  1535. the hand of

  1536. Pharaoh's own

  1537. daughter.

  1538. Everything that

  1539. Pharaoh intended

  1540. for evil,

  1541. God turned for

  1542. good.

  1543. That's the

  1544. message of

  1545. this passage.

  1546. We see it

  1547. right here,

  1548. and we see it

  1549. in the life

  1550. of Jesus even

  1551. more.

  1552. As a baby,

  1553. he was threatened

  1554. by King Herod

  1555. who wanted to

  1556. kill him.

  1557. In the desert,

  1558. the devil tempted

  1559. him.

  1560. In the garden,

  1561. he was betrayed

  1562. by one of his

  1563. friends,

  1564. and on the

  1565. darkest day of

  1566. all,

  1567. he was nailed

  1568. to a tree,

  1569. and he hung

  1570. on that tree,

  1571. and he cried

  1572. out,

  1573. and there was

  1574. no answer.

  1575. But every one

  1576. of Satan's

  1577. designs for

  1578. evil,

  1579. God turned

  1580. for good.

  1581. Jesus was

  1582. delivered from

  1583. the wrath of

  1584. Herod.

  1585. He resisted

  1586. the devil's

  1587. temptation,

  1588. and therefore

  1589. overcame him.

  1590. He remained

  1591. loyal to his

  1592. followers,

  1593. even when his

  1594. followers weren't

  1595. loyal to him,

  1596. and on the

  1597. cross,

  1598. he took our

  1599. sins away,

  1600. as far as the

  1601. east is from

  1602. the west.

  1603. And on the

  1604. third day,

  1605. he triumphed

  1606. over sin and

  1607. death in his

  1608. resurrection.

  1609. Brothers and

  1610. sisters,

  1611. that's why we

  1612. can be confident

  1613. that God is

  1614. present and active

  1615. in our lives,

  1616. and in this

  1617. world,

  1618. even when it

  1619. doesn't seem

  1620. like it,

  1621. even when he

  1622. seems to be

  1623. silent for a

  1624. really long

  1625. time and only

  1626. active in the

  1627. smallest ways,

  1628. we serve a God

  1629. who takes what

  1630. was intended for

  1631. evil and turns

  1632. it to accomplish

  1633. his good and

  1634. glorious and

  1635. saving purposes

  1636. in the world.

  1637. We're about to

  1638. come to the

  1639. Lord's table,

  1640. where we remember

  1641. the death of

  1642. Christ on our

  1643. behalf.

  1644. And we can

  1645. remember that

  1646. there, what

  1647. God, what

  1648. Satan intended

  1649. for evil, God

  1650. intended for

  1651. good.

  1652. And as we take

  1653. the bread and

  1654. the cup, we

  1655. take them in

  1656. faith.

  1657. We offer to

  1658. him our lives,

  1659. that he might

  1660. use them for his

  1661. good purposes.

  1662. Let's pray.

  1663. Father, we thank

  1664. you that what

  1665. Satan intends

  1666. for evil, that

  1667. you turn for

  1668. good.

  1669. We pray that

  1670. you would give

  1671. us faith, hope,

  1672. and love.

  1673. Pray that you'd

  1674. nourish us as we

  1675. receive the Lord's

  1676. Supper this

  1677. morning.

  1678. In Jesus' name,

  1679. amen.
