  1. A master storyteller.

  2. Am I on?

  3. Can you hear me?

  4. Yes?

  5. No?

  6. A master storyteller always delights us and surprises us.

  7. It is no surprise if you've been coming here for a while that I'm a J.R.R. Tolkien fan.

  8. And one of the things that I love about the Lord of the Rings is the richness of the story that he tells.

  9. And how a path of victory and deliverance takes unexpected twists and turns that are unforeseen by those taking the journey in the story.

  10. And so the fellowship breaks and is scattered and you wonder what will happen.

  11. Or Faramir shows up in the middle of the wasteland looking at first like an enemy but instead becoming an essential help and aid along the way of Frodo's journey.

  12. And so on and so forth.

  13. Unexpected twists and turns fill the best of stories.

  14. But when it comes to our lives we aren't so thrilled about the twists and turns that come to us do we?

  15. We don't necessarily like them.

  16. They're hard.

  17. They're inconvenient.

  18. They challenge us.

  19. And they leave us confused and uncertain.

  20. Particularly if we come to it from a perspective as we gather here this morning that we live under a God who is the master storyteller of our lives.

  21. He is in fact not just the storyteller but the story maker of our lives who leads us in a story of his own making.

  22. And he is overseeing those twists and turns.

  23. And so when we struggle with the challenges of our lives we struggle in fact with God himself.

  24. We struggle with who he is.

  25. You see maybe you're like me.

  26. You think if God is good and God is sovereign God's plan should be pretty straightforward.

  27. How can my life go from good to better to best.

  28. The straightest line possible without any trials.

  29. Doesn't that sound like a great thing?

  30. We want our lives easy.

  31. We want the challenges to be predictable and the outcomes certain.

  32. But it doesn't look like that often does it?

  33. Not in our lives and certainly not in the Bible storyline.

  34. We're continuing our series in the book of Exodus.

  35. If you want to turn with me there we'll be looking at Exodus 2.

  36. It's page 45 in the Pew Bible.

  37. And as you turn there let me remind you of where we've been.

  38. Exodus is the second book of the Bible and it picks up the narrative of the descendants of Abraham 400 years after Abraham had moved down to Egypt.

  39. Which at that point was an amazing act of provision by God to save and deliver his people.

  40. But 400 years later that provision has become a yoke of slavery.

  41. After 400 years that great provision now looks like a prison.

  42. And a terrible place to be.

  43. Some of the promises of God have been fulfilled.

  44. Surely this one man and him as good as dead now has children and grandchildren.

  45. In fact he has descendants that now number hundreds of thousands.

  46. In 400 years he's multiplied into a nation such that it creates a threat to the nation of Egypt.

  47. The leaders are afraid of the political instability that they would bring.

  48. And so they are enslaved and oppressed.

  49. They are the victims of a genocidal plot.

  50. If you didn't listen to Pastor Greg's sermon last week go back and listen to it.

  51. Think about what it has to say to us today.

  52. But then as we saw in the story of oppression and as the people cried out to God.

  53. Beginning of chapter 2 there's this story of a baby.

  54. A baby who is delivered from that genocidal act.

  55. A baby who is delivered miraculously and unexpectedly.

  56. And so we have a little hope.

  57. A hope that even though we haven't seen God act obviously.

  58. God has only been barely mentioned in the story so far.

  59. We have a hope as a reader reading this story that suddenly.

  60. Okay now there's this baby.

  61. Now this is going to go somewhere.

  62. It sets us up for a great deliverance that's at hand.

  63. Before we go on let me just ask.

  64. When you are facing times when you are longing for deliverance.

  65. What goes through your mind?

  66. When you have been enduring some trial that's been going on longer than you think it should.

  67. How easy it is for us to imagine how God could snap his fingers and make it all go away.

  68. How easily he could say I can fix this.

  69. Because we know that he can.

  70. And we have a hope and an expectation and a longing that God will show up in the middle of this trial.

  71. But God is the master storyteller and story maker.

  72. Often takes us on paths that we don't always expect.

  73. And that leads us to our passage today.

  74. Exodus chapter 2.

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  75. We're starting in verse 11.

  76. Let's read it together and then we'll pray.

  77. Exodus chapter 2 verse 11.

    Exodus 2:11

  78. One day when Moses had grown up he went out to his people and looked on their burdens.

  79. And he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.

  80. He looked this way and that and seeing no one he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

  81. And when he went out the next day behold two Hebrews were struggling together.

  82. And he said to the man in the wrong, why do you strike your companion?

  83. And he answered, who made you a prince and judge over us?

  84. Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?

  85. And Moses was afraid and thought surely the thing is known.

  86. And when Moses heard of it he sought to kill Moses.

  87. But Moses fled to Pharaoh.

  88. Fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian.

  89. And he sat down by a well.

  90. Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters.

  91. And they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.

  92. The shepherds came and drove them away.

  93. But Moses stood up and saved them and watered their flock.

  94. When they came home to their father Ruel, he said,

  95. How is it that you have come home so soon today?

  96. And they said, an Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds.

  97. And even drew water for us and watered the flock.

  98. And he said to his daughters, then where is he?

  99. Why have you left the man?

  100. Call him that he may eat bread.

  101. And Moses was content to dwell with the man.

  102. And he gave Moses his daughter Zipporah.

  103. She gave birth to a son.

  104. And he called his name Gershom.

  105. For he said, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.

  106. During these many days the king of Egypt died.

  107. And the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery.

  108. And cried out for help.

  109. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God.

  110. And God heard their groaning.

  111. And God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

  112. God saw the people of Israel.

  113. And God knew.

  114. Let's pray.

  115. Father, we acknowledge this morning that your ways are not our ways.

  116. And your thoughts are not our thoughts.

  117. Lord, that you are high and exalted.

  118. And Lord, we are creatures.

  119. And though, Lord, you have made us to know you.

  120. Lord, you are much greater than us.

  121. Lord, I pray this morning.

  122. That Lord, as we explore this passage.

  123. What we will see is you more clearly.

  124. We will understand you more deeply.

  125. Lord, we will trust you.

  126. Lord, I pray for your help this morning as I speak.

  127. Lord, that my words, Lord, would be useful in your hands.

  128. Lord, that you would prepare all of our hearts to receive your word this morning.

  129. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  130. Amen.

  131. Amen.

  132. So as we look at this passage this morning, we're simply going to look at two things.

  133. First, we see that on the path to deliverance, there is an...

  134. On the way to deliverance, there is an unexpected path taken.

  135. And secondly, there is an unexpected God revealed.

  136. So first, let's look at the unexpected path of deliverance.

  137. The unexpected path of deliverance is one in which we see deliverance delayed.

  138. Now, one of the things you want to think about as you're reading the book of Exodus is that

  139. the people who are receiving the book of Exodus know the story.

  140. It was written after the fact, right?

  141. And therefore, everyone who is reading the book of Exodus probably has heard of Moses.

  142. And they know that he is the deliverer.

  143. They know that God is going to use him in all the ways that any of us who know any...

  144. If you're familiar at all with the story of Exodus, you'll know this is the man that God

  145. is going to use to lead his people out of Egypt.

  146. But his story does not go as expected.

  147. As we said, the birth narrative sets us up to think, okay, now something big is going to happen.

  148. And in fact, what we see in verse 11 is Moses goes out and he's grown up and then he goes out.

  149. The words specifically say he looked on their people.

  150. He went out to his people and he looked on their burden.

  151. And you have to read this carefully because it wasn't just that Moses was in the palace

  152. and he thought today, oh, maybe I'll stroll among the slaves today and see what it looks like.

  153. The verb actually to go out to them is the word that's used later for the Exodus as they leave people.

  154. Moses was actually going out of the palace in a much more profound way.

  155. And looking upon his people was not simply detached observation, but it was an engaged examination.

  156. He was saying, what is the status of my people?

  157. I have had this privilege of being raised up in the Egyptian household as a prince of Egypt.

  158. But now I am going to go out and see how it is that my people live.

  159. And there's a strong sense of identification.

  160. There's a strong sense of Moses saying, I am now moving away from my Egyptian position to identify with my people.

  161. And in fact, we see this and know this more clearly because in the New Testament, the book of Hebrews reminds us of this.

  162. Hebrews 11, chapter 24, the writer says this,

  163. By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter,

  164. choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

  165. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt,

  166. for he was looking to the reward.

  167. As Moses went out and looked on his people, he was making a strong move,

  168. a strong move to identify with the Hebrews who were despised slaves.

  169. He was leaving behind a position of privilege and of treasures, as the writer of Hebrews reminds us of.

  170. And as he did that, he saw and he intervened.

  171. What we see from this story is that as we hoped this baby might be an instrument in God's hands,

  172. we now see Moses living it out.

  173. He is a deliverer.

  174. He intercedes and steps in to rescue a Hebrew who is being beaten and most likely going to be killed by the Egyptian.

  175. He steps in and he saves him.

  176. His instinct to be a deliverer is on display.

  177. And he knew it would be costly.

  178. Look with me in verse 12.

  179. Isn't it interesting?

  180. Moses knew that when he was doing this, he was drawing a line in the sand.

  181. He was doing something that would put in jeopardy his position in Egypt.

  182. Because he looked this way and that way.

  183. Not to see, oh, is someone else going to help?

  184. I think it was to say, if no one sees me, I can get away with this and still be able to keep my position.

  185. And he buried him in the sand because that's the quickest way to get rid of a body in Egypt.

  186. Because there's lots of sand.

  187. It's not very hard to dig in.

  188. So Moses knew what he was doing as he was taking the step of being a deliverer.

  189. He made a costly choice to identify with God's people.

  190. And as we look through the story, I'm just going to throw out a couple of questions for us to ask.

  191. How many of us make costly choices to identify with God's people?

  192. How often are we willing to forsake the riches of position in this world in order to say, yes, I'm one of God's people?

  193. The story continues.

  194. Moses then, the next day, having done this great act and seemingly having gotten away with it, is thinking,

  195. Okay, I'm stepping into this role as a deliverer.

  196. I'm going to do this.

  197. So he walks among his people again.

  198. He sees two Hebrews now who are having a conflict.

  199. And there's clearly a right and a wrong.

  200. Because the passage tells us he speaks to the one who was in the wrong.

  201. And he says, why are you doing this?

  202. He comes to deliver his people from internal conflict and strife and to rescue them.

  203. And we think, oh man, this is it.

  204. If you're reading the story and you don't know what's going to happen,

  205. you read the story and you think, okay, this is it.

  206. This is where they're going to say, oh, Moses, you're here.

  207. Our deliverer, our savior.

  208. We praise God that you have sent us.

  209. And we are so glad that you are here to help us solve this little dispute

  210. and to rescue us from slavery and overthrow Egypt in the process.

  211. But that's not what he gets at all, is it?

  212. His instincts to be a deliverer, his instinct to intercede for the good of his people backfires terribly.

  213. The Hebrew in the wrong looks at him and says, well, who made you?

  214. You know, who died and made you king, right?

  215. That's what we would say today.

  216. Who died and made you king of my life?

  217. And then he goes on and he says, are you going to kill me?

  218. Are you going to murder me the way you killed that Egyptian?

  219. It's a strong accusation.

  220. And Moses realizes, I haven't gotten away with it.

  221. People know what happened.

  222. Maybe the Hebrew that he saved went back and rejoiced and told all his friends.

  223. Maybe they went back and said, the weirdest thing happened today.

  224. That Moses guy, you know, he lives in the palace.

  225. He came and delivered, like he killed the Egyptian.

  226. And I think it's going to go bad for us.

  227. Because that was not a good thing.

  228. I don't know what he was thinking.

  229. And interestingly, I'll just say this.

  230. The Bible never says clearly, one way or the other,

  231. whether there is an affirmation that Moses was doing right

  232. or doing wrong in the killing of the Egyptian.

  233. We don't need to answer that question to know

  234. that God was using it as a display.

  235. It was a display of his delivering instinct

  236. and his self-understanding.

  237. Interestingly, in Acts,

  238. if you haven't read Acts 7

  239. and the speech that Stephen,

  240. the early follower of Jesus, gives

  241. about the history of Israel,

  242. you should read it sometime in the next couple of weeks

  243. because it's a great story

  244. and it will help you understand Exodus a lot more.

  245. Acts 27 describes Moses' thought

  246. at this point in the story in this way.

  247. He says,

  248. he supposed that his brothers would understand

  249. that God was giving them salvation by his hand,

  250. but they did not understand.

  251. So Stephen affirms what we guess about Moses,

  252. that he knew he was there to be their deliverer

  253. and that God had raised him up

  254. uniquely to have this position and this role.

  255. But they didn't see God's hand in it either

  256. and they rejected him.

  257. And the story of what Moses had been done

  258. became known

  259. and it came to the ears of Pharaoh

  260. and Pharaoh,

  261. in whose household Moses had been raised

  262. and who, as we see further on in the story,

  263. Moses looks like an Egyptian to everyone else.

  264. Pharaoh went after him.

  265. He knew that this was a betrayal of his loyalty to Egypt

  266. and he went after him

  267. and Moses was afraid

  268. and he fled.

  269. One of the interesting patterns we see

  270. is that this is one of the first places

  271. where we see God's people rejecting God's deliverer.

  272. Moses had a contentious relationship

  273. ongoing with the people of Israel.

  274. You'll see it in chapter five

  275. when Moses comes back to Egypt

  276. and tries to deliver them

  277. and their work is increased

  278. and they grumble and complain

  279. about Moses

  280. and his interceding and delivering

  281. and how much trouble it's causing for them.

  282. And then after God takes them out of Egypt

  283. with a mighty hand

  284. through the plagues

  285. and through the Red Sea,

  286. then in the desert,

  287. they don't have food one day

  288. and they grumble and complain.

  289. And the next time,

  290. they don't have water

  291. and they grumble and complain

  292. and then they don't have food again

  293. and they grumble and complain

  294. and then they grumble and complain

  295. about the food they do have

  296. and then they grumble and complain again

  297. because there isn't water in another place.

  298. And they grumble and complain

  299. over and over and over again

  300. against the very thing that God is doing,

  301. the very helper that God has given them.

  302. Friends, I want us to ask ourselves

  303. as we think about our lives,

  304. do we grumble and complain

  305. and resist God's saving work in our lives?

  306. Are we too proud to accept his help?

  307. Are we too committed to our sense of being in control

  308. to allow him to work in a way that we don't expect?

  309. Do we have faith and eyes

  310. to see God sustaining and delivering us

  311. when it doesn't feel like it?

  312. How often are we like the grumbling Israelites?

  313. So the deliverer is rejected.

  314. His deed becomes known and he flees Egypt.

  315. And he flees to a place called Midian.

  316. Now Midian is best described as the backside of nowhere.

  317. Technically, it's probably on the eastern side

  318. of the Sinai Peninsula above where the water is.

  319. But it's not,

  320. the Midianites were actually nomadic people.

  321. They were also long lost relatives.

  322. Midian was a son of Abraham

  323. by Abraham's second wife in Genesis 25 too.

  324. You can look it up.

  325. So they were Semitic people,

  326. but they were not part of the covenant community.

  327. But at this point,

  328. the distance must have been very great.

  329. So he's going out to a different people.

  330. And what we see in this next story

  331. is Moses continues in his character

  332. of wanting to be a deliverer.

  333. He comes upon a well

  334. and at this well,

  335. there are women,

  336. these girls are watering.

  337. And if you've ever seen the description,

  338. this helped me see this

  339. because it's described really well

  340. in verses 16 and 17.

  341. They drew water.

  342. So in order to water their flock,

  343. they had to go to the well

  344. and pull the water up out of the well.

  345. And then they had to put it

  346. in some kind of feeding trough

  347. so that the sheep could then come and take it.

  348. And what happened is

  349. these shepherds would come,

  350. let the women do all the work

  351. to get the water ready.

  352. And then they would come

  353. and drive off the sons of Jethro,

  354. who's also Ruel,

  355. and drive them off

  356. and then take the water for themselves.

  357. So these girls would have to draw water twice,

  358. once for the evil shepherds,

  359. and then they'd have to do it again

  360. for their own thing.

  361. That's why Jethro said,

  362. how is it that you're back so early?

  363. Because usually they had to do it twice.

  364. Moses steps in and intervenes,

  365. and he delivers them.

  366. And you see again,

  367. this same instinct,

  368. this same,

  369. and the storyteller is wanting us to remember,

  370. this is the deliverer

  371. that God saved from the water.

  372. This is the deliverer

  373. that God protected in the palace of Egypt.

  374. This is the deliverer

  375. that God is going to use.

  376. But right now,

  377. he's on the backside of nowhere.

  378. And not only is he on the backside of nowhere,

  379. but God is providing in ways

  380. it looks like he's going to settle in there.

  381. He isn't just there,

  382. and they say,

  383. hey, that's great, thanks.

  384. Why don't you have a cup of water

  385. and be on your way?

  386. They say, come, eat with us.

  387. Come, take my daughter as your wife.

  388. Come, bear children.

  389. I'm going to give you a livelihood.

  390. I'm going to give you a home.

  391. I'm going to give you everything you need

  392. to settle in.

  393. The story seems to have hit a dead end.

  394. How is God's deliverance

  395. and God's deliverer

  396. going to do anything for God's people

  397. while he's watching a bunch of smelly sheep

  398. on the backside of nowhere

  399. settling in to raise his family?

  400. And the literary form of this is beautiful

  401. because it leads you to this

  402. dead end of the plot line,

  403. except, look with me at verse 22.

  404. The son that was born

  405. to Moses and Zipporah,

  406. the one who probably would have,

  407. in human terms,

  408. nailed the,

  409. put the last nail in the coffin of,

  410. okay, I am now a Midianite.

  411. I'm going to stay here forever.

  412. God has taken me out of whatever happened before

  413. and he's got me here

  414. and this is where I'm going to be.

  415. But Moses names him Gershom,

  416. which sounds like,

  417. I've been,

  418. sounds like the Hebrew word sojourner.

  419. Moses indicates that even then,

  420. even though the whole flow of the plot line

  421. is Moses the deliverer being sidelined,

  422. led into a dead end where there's no way out,

  423. Moses himself still has this sense.

  424. This is not my home

  425. and these are not my people.

  426. I'm just here a while.

  427. That's what it means to be a sojourner.

  428. I'm just here for a while

  429. because my people are back in Egypt

  430. and my true home,

  431. well,

  432. Moses has yet to find where his true home will be.

  433. He's living in exile,

  434. both from the home he grew up in

  435. and from the people that he identified with.

  436. So he too is living in this place of uncertainty

  437. with unexpected twists.

  438. No, it never says it.

  439. It's possible Moses himself

  440. was asking the question,

  441. God, what are you going to do here?

  442. I know I belong somewhere else,

  443. but what are you going to do here?

  444. And the narrator,

  445. in a brilliant narrative form,

  446. then leaves us there.

  447. Leaves Moses on the backside of nowhere,

  448. raising his family and raising his sheep

  449. in the household of Jethro

  450. and makes a turn.

  451. Moses will be there for 40 years,

  452. according to Acts.

  453. Again, I want to ask,

  454. stop,

  455. just ask a question for a minute.

  456. How hard is it to wait

  457. for God's deliverance in our lives?

  458. When we're facing a hard situation,

  459. when we're looking at something

  460. and we think,

  461. God, I don't know how to get out of this.

  462. I don't know what it's going to look like.

  463. I don't see how you could ever

  464. redeem this situation.

  465. I've reached a dead end.

  466. What areas of your life

  467. are you longing for deliverance?

  468. How long has it been?

  469. Will you submit your storyline

  470. to the story that God has written for you?

  471. Will you trust him?

  472. Of course, you might ask,

  473. why?

  474. Why would I trust him?

  475. If you were Moses,

  476. you'd think,

  477. okay, God, I don't get it.

  478. I don't see you,

  479. and I'm here for a long time

  480. wondering what the heck you're doing.

  481. We feel that way too.

  482. But the narrator knows this,

  483. and he set us up

  484. for verses 23 through 25,

  485. because having walked

  486. this unexpected path

  487. where deliverance has been delayed

  488. and seemingly derailed,

  489. we then come to the end of the story,

  490. and the narrator helps us turn the corner

  491. to see why we should trust God

  492. even in the middle of it.

  493. Because what we see in verse 23 through 25

  494. is the unexpected God of deliverance revealed.

  495. If it were a movie,

  496. the lens changes from Midian back to Egypt.

  497. But the story there doesn't look good either, does it?

  498. It's actually gotten worse.

  499. In two verses,

  500. the writer uses terms

  501. for groaning and crying out twice.

  502. It's not the same term.

  503. There are actually four different words

  504. that are used here

  505. to describe the plight

  506. of God's people in Israel,

  507. or God's people,

  508. the Israelites in Egypt.

  509. They are enslaved.

  510. They are oppressed.

  511. They are groaning

  512. under the weight of their oppression.

  513. And they are crying out,

  514. please help us.

  515. Please save us.

  516. The narrator says,

  517. a new Pharaoh has risen up.

  518. Maybe that leaves the door open

  519. for Moses to come back.

  520. But the people, meanwhile,

  521. just as Moses had gone off to a dead end,

  522. the one thing they knew

  523. that God had delivered this one baby boy

  524. who maybe could be their deliverer,

  525. he's now gone.

  526. For a generation,

  527. 40 years,

  528. he's gone.

  529. But God is not gone.

  530. And you see,

  531. for the first time in Exodus,

  532. oh, there are a few mentions of God

  533. in chapter one

  534. as he relates to the Israelite midwives

  535. and how they rescued

  536. some of the Hebrew boys.

  537. but really for the first time,

  538. for the first time,

  539. God becomes a major actor in the story.

  540. And it's such a striking thing.

  541. If you read this with literary eyes,

  542. it's such a striking thing

  543. because 23 talks about the slavery

  544. and the groaning and the crying.

  545. At the very end,

  546. it says that the cry of rescue for slavery

  547. came up to God.

  548. And it's not as if God had never heard it before.

  549. It's not as if God was deaf

  550. and suddenly decided that he would listen

  551. or that he was somehow unable to hear

  552. and now he was.

  553. But what it means is that God

  554. in his perfect timing

  555. was now willing to pay attention.

  556. God was now willing to hear

  557. and respond in a particular way.

  558. He was now,

  559. in his timing,

  560. going to engage with their cries

  561. and with their situation.

  562. And there are four action verbs

  563. in verses 24 and 25

  564. that are beautiful

  565. because of what they tell us about God.

  566. Verse 24,

  567. and God heard their groaning.

  568. It wasn't just that he heard the thing

  569. for the first time,

  570. but that he was,

  571. his ears were open to them

  572. and he engaged with them

  573. on the basis of what he heard.

  574. And not only did he hear their cries,

  575. but he remembered.

  576. He remembered his covenant.

  577. Now this does not mean

  578. that God has forgotten.

  579. It doesn't mean that God thought,

  580. oh gosh, that's right,

  581. that thing with Abraham.

  582. What did I say?

  583. Oh right,

  584. about a people and a land

  585. and a, yeah.

  586. Oh, I gotta go back

  587. and look that up in Genesis

  588. so I remember what that's about.

  589. God didn't forget.

  590. But what it means

  591. is that God remembers

  592. in a way that is now

  593. moving him to action.

  594. God is remembering the promises

  595. that the descendants of Abraham

  596. would be blessed by God

  597. and be a blessing to the world.

  598. That he would make them

  599. into a great nation.

  600. That he would deliver them

  601. into a promised land

  602. where they would enjoy

  603. all the bounty and the fruit

  604. and the blessing

  605. of being his people.

  606. And he would be their God

  607. and through them

  608. he would display

  609. his glory to all the world

  610. that the nations would come

  611. and know what a great God,

  612. the God of the Hebrews is.

  613. This is the covenant

  614. that he promised them.

  615. That he would do these things.

  616. And they are as far from it

  617. as you can imagine.

  618. They're an enslaved people

  619. in a foreign land.

  620. But God remembered that covenant

  621. and is ready now to act.

  622. 25 keeps going about who God is.

  623. Because he doesn't just hear

  624. and he doesn't just remember.

  625. But he sees.

  626. Maybe you know what it's like

  627. when someone sees you

  628. in your situation

  629. with understanding.

  630. Where someone gets

  631. the depth of your trial.

  632. The hardness and the pain

  633. that you've endured and suffered.

  634. the confusion

  635. and the questions

  636. that have run through your brain.

  637. What it's like

  638. when someone really sees you.

  639. This is what this means here.

  640. Just like Hagar

  641. as she fled from Abraham

  642. and Sarah

  643. after their failed attempt

  644. to fulfill God's promises

  645. in their own way.

  646. As she fled into the wilderness

  647. thinking she was going to die there.

  648. She met with God.

  649. El Roy.

  650. The God who sees.

  651. The God who will look after her.

  652. God who sees and acts

  653. on their behalf.

  654. And then finally

  655. God doesn't just see them

  656. but he knows them.

  657. Maybe you all know this already

  658. but if you don't

  659. you should know this.

  660. The Hebrew word to know

  661. is not simply

  662. capacity for intellectual

  663. understanding.

  664. understanding.

  665. It is not simply

  666. gathering more information.

  667. Knowing in Hebrew

  668. is almost always

  669. a relational term.

  670. It is used

  671. for a deep intimacy

  672. of knowledge.

  673. Usually with people

  674. that has this

  675. sense of connection.

  676. It's used

  677. for what happens

  678. when a husband and wife

  679. come together

  680. physically

  681. and in all other ways

  682. in union

  683. in marriage.

  684. that they know

  685. one another.

  686. And after we've seen

  687. God take his people

  688. and his deliverer

  689. on a very unexpected

  690. journey

  691. to seemingly

  692. a dead end

  693. the writer of the story

  694. comes back

  695. and he says

  696. God knows.

  697. God knows

  698. what he is doing

  699. and he is intimately

  700. connected

  701. with his people

  702. through it all

  703. and he is now

  704. ready to act.

  705. Deliverance

  706. is on

  707. the way

  708. because God

  709. is now

  710. ready to act.

  711. He has not

  712. forgotten his people

  713. or his deliverer

  714. and Nick

  715. will have the privilege

  716. of telling us

  717. how God is going

  718. to show up

  719. and turn the corner

  720. in this grand story.

  721. Friends

  722. as we walk

  723. through our paths

  724. of life

  725. and when we go

  726. through the periods

  727. where we wonder

  728. whether God

  729. has led us

  730. to a dead end

  731. and we wonder

  732. and cry out

  733. and groan

  734. to him

  735. about our situation

  736. it is God's character

  737. that he has not

  738. forgotten

  739. or abandoned us

  740. that is

  741. the basis

  742. of our hope.

  743. When it seems

  744. like God is absent

  745. when we can't

  746. see his plan

  747. when we can't

  748. see his hand

  749. at work

  750. when it feels

  751. like our current

  752. place of suffering

  753. is not only that

  754. but it is in obscurity

  755. we wonder

  756. why God's plans

  757. are so strange.

  758. Friends

  759. the reason

  760. why God's plans

  761. are so strange

  762. is simply

  763. this

  764. God doesn't

  765. work

  766. in this story

  767. so that we would

  768. think

  769. Moses is going

  770. to be the great

  771. deliverer

  772. of Israel

  773. this story

  774. God takes

  775. Moses

  776. on this

  777. unexpected

  778. journey

  779. because he wants

  780. to remind

  781. Moses

  782. and his people

  783. that Moses

  784. is not the

  785. deliverer

  786. of his people

  787. God

  788. is the

  789. deliverer

  790. of his people

  791. God

  792. is the main

  793. character

  794. in this story

  795. God

  796. is the

  797. savior

  798. of his people

  799. and he

  800. is doing

  801. all of

  802. these things

  803. so that

  804. we would

  805. see and

  806. know

  807. this God

  808. as our

  809. deliverer

  810. and that we

  811. would not

  812. fall into

  813. the oh so

  814. human desire

  815. that someone

  816. else would be

  817. our savior

  818. and someone

  819. else would be

  820. our deliverer

  821. and that some

  822. human agent

  823. can step in

  824. and actually

  825. fix our

  826. story

  827. and change

  828. our trajectory

  829. and rescue

  830. us from

  831. dead ends

  832. and from

  833. obscurity

  834. Moses

  835. has

  836. characteristics

  837. of how

  838. God's

  839. deliverance

  840. is going

  841. to look

  842. like

  843. he has

  844. instincts

  845. to deliver

  846. he has

  847. a courage

  848. to identify

  849. with his

  850. people

  851. but even

  852. then

  853. even in

  854. this story

  855. part of

  856. what we

  857. see

  858. is a

  859. storyteller

  860. telling the

  861. story

  862. so we

  863. say

  864. oh it's

  865. God

  866. who's

  867. going to

  868. deliver

  869. not

  870. Moses

  871. and we

  872. know

  873. more broadly

  874. from the

  875. storyline

  876. of the

  877. Bible

  878. that Moses

  879. though he

  880. delivered his

  881. people from

  882. Egypt

  883. did not

  884. deliver his

  885. people

  886. from sin

  887. Moses

  888. delivered his

  889. people to

  890. the brink

  891. of the

  892. promised

  893. land

  894. and yet

  895. his

  896. failures

  897. and his

  898. weaknesses

  899. and his

  900. sin

  901. and the

  902. sin of the

  903. people

  904. continued

  905. and they

  906. grumbled

  907. and complained

  908. and did

  909. not trust

  910. God

  911. even after

  912. he had

  913. done

  914. great

  915. things

  916. for them

  917. because

  918. in the

  919. grand

  920. plan

  921. of God's

  922. deliverance

  923. even

  924. this

  925. was a

  926. signpost

  927. pointing ahead

  928. to something

  929. greater

  930. even

  931. these

  932. acts

  933. of

  934. deliverance

  935. are

  936. pointing

  937. ahead

  938. to

  939. one

  940. greater

  941. than

  942. Moses

  943. friends

  944. it points

  945. us to

  946. Jesus

  947. Jesus

  948. who

  949. was

  950. saved

  951. miraculously

  952. at birth

  953. Jesus

  954. who

  955. lived

  956. 30

  957. years

  958. in

  959. obscurity

  960. as a

  961. carpenter

  962. Jesus

  963. who

  964. at the

  965. very

  966. beginning

  967. of his

  968. ministry

  969. when it

  970. looked like

  971. he was

  972. going to

  973. blast

  974. out

  975. in his

  976. baptism

  977. and start

  978. his big

  979. public

  980. ministry

  981. instead

  982. was sent

  983. into the

  984. wilderness

  985. but more

  986. than that

  987. Jesus

  988. who came

  989. to identify

  990. with us

  991. with humanity

  992. who took

  993. on flesh

  994. and blood

  995. to identify

  996. with us

  997. to take

  998. on flesh

  999. and blood

  1000. he who

  1001. bore

  1002. our sin

  1003. he who

  1004. did not

  1005. sin

  1006. but who

  1007. bore

  1008. our sin

  1009. in

  1010. identification

  1011. with us

  1012. forsaking

  1013. as Philippians

  1014. says

  1015. the privilege

  1016. and the

  1017. honor

  1018. that was

  1019. his

  1020. in heaven

  1021. to be

  1022. the equal

  1023. of God

  1024. he

  1025. forsook

  1026. those

  1027. privileges

  1028. to take

  1029. on human

  1030. flesh

  1031. and blood

  1032. to identify

  1033. with us

  1034. so that

  1035. he might

  1036. be our

  1037. deliverer

  1038. and he

  1039. delivered us

  1040. from slavery

  1041. to sin

  1042. and the

  1043. oppression

  1044. and the

  1045. wreckage

  1046. and the

  1047. pain

  1048. and the

  1049. suffering

  1050. that sin

  1051. causes

  1052. in our

  1053. lives

  1054. and he

  1055. delivered us

  1056. from the

  1057. penalty

  1058. of sin

  1059. and the

  1060. wrath

  1061. of God

  1062. that is

  1063. rightly

  1064. upon it

  1065. because of

  1066. our rebellion

  1067. against him

  1068. Jesus is a

  1069. greater

  1070. deliverer

  1071. Jesus is the

  1072. certain

  1073. deliverance

  1074. that by his

  1075. life

  1076. of perfect

  1077. obedience

  1078. so that he

  1079. could stand

  1080. in our

  1081. stead

  1082. by his

  1083. death

  1084. in our

  1085. place

  1086. a substitute

  1087. and a

  1088. sacrifice

  1089. for us

  1090. so that

  1091. the penalty

  1092. and power

  1093. of sin

  1094. are taken

  1095. away

  1096. in our

  1097. lives

  1098. and he

  1099. who rose

  1100. from the

  1101. dead

  1102. so that he

  1103. might be

  1104. the ultimate

  1105. victor

  1106. over sin

  1107. and death

  1108. in this

  1109. world

  1110. and in

  1111. our

  1112. lives

  1113. this is

  1114. the great

  1115. deliverance

  1116. that we

  1117. have

  1118. and friends

  1119. we also

  1120. still now

  1121. because we

  1122. still groan

  1123. because we

  1124. still live

  1125. in this

  1126. fallen

  1127. world

  1128. because we

  1129. still suffer

  1130. because our

  1131. lives still

  1132. have many

  1133. unexpected

  1134. twists

  1135. and turns

  1136. and detours

  1137. when we

  1138. wonder God

  1139. why can't

  1140. you just

  1141. make the

  1142. path straight

  1143. and the

  1144. end

  1145. easy

  1146. we know

  1147. that he

  1148. has promised

  1149. that he

  1150. will come

  1151. back

  1152. and he

  1153. who has

  1154. worked

  1155. all that

  1156. is necessary

  1157. for our

  1158. salvation

  1159. he will

  1160. come back

  1161. and save

  1162. us one

  1163. day

  1164. and we

  1165. not just

  1166. save us

  1167. individually

  1168. but he

  1169. will save

  1170. this world

  1171. and he

  1172. will make

  1173. it new

  1174. and all

  1175. evil will

  1176. be punished

  1177. and all

  1178. suffering

  1179. will end

  1180. there will

  1181. be no

  1182. more tears

  1183. no more

  1184. crying

  1185. no more

  1186. sickness

  1187. and no

  1188. more death

  1189. he will

  1190. make all

  1191. things new

  1192. and so

  1193. we have

  1194. confidence

  1195. to wait

  1196. for that

  1197. just as

  1198. the Egyptians

  1199. could look

  1200. at the

  1201. character

  1202. of God

  1203. and wait

  1204. for a

  1205. deliverer

  1206. back

  1207. in their

  1208. time

  1209. friends

  1210. God is

  1211. trustworthy

  1212. he is

  1213. worth

  1214. us

  1215. giving

  1216. him

  1217. control

  1218. of the

  1219. storyline

  1220. of our

  1221. lives

  1222. we can

  1223. look back

  1224. on the

  1225. work of

  1226. deliverance

  1227. on Jesus

  1228. Christ

  1229. living

  1230. dying

  1231. and rising

  1232. again

  1233. and know

  1234. for certain

  1235. that this

  1236. is the

  1237. character

  1238. of the

  1239. God

  1240. that we

  1241. have been

  1242. called

  1243. to know

  1244. and to

  1245. trust

  1246. if you're

  1247. here this

  1248. morning

  1249. and you

  1250. haven't

  1251. put your

  1252. trust in

  1253. this God

  1254. or if you're

  1255. here this

  1256. morning

  1257. and you

  1258. are

  1259. struggling

  1260. I call

  1261. you

  1262. to think

  1263. that the

  1264. God who

  1265. leads you

  1266. on unexpected

  1267. paths

  1268. and what

  1269. seem like

  1270. dead end

  1271. roads

  1272. he has

  1273. not

  1274. forgotten

  1275. you

  1276. and he's

  1277. calling

  1278. you to

  1279. him

  1280. to trust

  1281. him

  1282. to put

  1283. your faith

  1284. in him

  1285. to know

  1286. that what

  1287. he's done

  1288. in Jesus

  1289. is for

  1290. you

  1291. let's

  1292. pray

  1293. Lord we

  1294. thank you

  1295. this morning

  1296. for this

  1297. passage

  1298. and we

  1299. thank you

  1300. for your

  1301. word

  1302. Lord and

  1303. how it

  1304. points us

  1305. to you

  1306. Lord I

  1307. do pray

  1308. that by

  1309. your spirit

  1310. you would

  1311. help us

  1312. to see

  1313. you as

  1314. you really

  1315. are

  1316. and Lord

  1317. you would

  1318. give us

  1319. hope this

  1320. morning

  1321. Lord I

  1322. do pray

  1323. that you

  1324. would strengthen

  1325. our faith

  1326. today as we

  1327. look at this

  1328. passage

  1329. Lord that we

  1330. would know

  1331. you to be a

  1332. God who

  1333. hears and a

  1334. God who

  1335. remembers

  1336. a God who

  1337. sees and a

  1338. God who

  1339. knows us

  1340. and a God

  1341. who being

  1342. all of those

  1343. things

  1344. has done

  1345. what is

  1346. necessary

  1347. in Jesus

  1348. for us

  1349. to be

  1350. delivered

  1351. to be

  1352. delivered

  1353. unto you

  1354. Lord

  1355. Lord we

  1356. pray that you

  1357. would help us

  1358. this morning

  1359. to have that

  1360. confidence

  1361. we pray this

  1362. in Jesus

  1363. name

  1364. amen
