  1. Morning, church.

  2. So I ran across a blog entry the other day titled 22 Little Known Ways to Make a Name

  3. for Yourself. On the list were such things as grow the trust, ask the unaskable, avoid

  4. the always, court the irrational, and on and on and on. I had to laugh when I read number

  5. eight on this list, which was embody the values. Right after number seven, which was eliminate

  6. the losers. I wasn't sure at that point what values we were embodying. But anyway, why

  7. are we so obsessed with making a name for ourselves? In his book, The City of God, Augustine said

  8. that one of the undeniable elements of the human condition is that we have an insatiable love

  9. of praise. We want to make a name for ourselves thinking that if we have human praise, if we

  10. make our mark, if we make a name for ourselves, we will then be happy. Right?

  11. But so often it's the opposite that happens in our pursuit to make a name for ourselves. We end up

  12. in our pursuit of our pursuit of our pursuit of our pursuit of our pursuit of our pursuit. We

  13. always want more. Why is that? The late David Foster Wallace put it this way in a commencement

  14. address he gave at Kenyon College in 2005. It's a bit of a long quote, but I think you'll be able

  15. to follow it. He says, in the day-to-day trenches of adult life, there's actually no such thing as

  16. atheism. There's no such thing as not worshiping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what

  17. to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of God or spiritual type thing

  18. to worship is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money

  19. and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel

  20. you have enough. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure, and you will always feel ugly.

  21. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you.

  22. Worship power. You will end up feeling weak and afraid. You will need ever more power over others

  23. to numb you to your own fear. Worship your intellect. Being seen as smart, you'll end up feeling stupid,

  24. a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. But the insidious thing, he goes on to say,

  25. about these forms of worship is not that they're evil or sinful. It's that they're unconscious.

  26. They are default settings.

  27. Now Wallace wasn't a Christian,

  28. but he's right. Isn't he here?

  29. We all worship something,

  30. and that thing

  31. often crushes us.

  32. And isn't the same thing true of our love of praise,

  33. worship approval and success,

  34. making a name for yourself, and you'll

  35. always end up feeling like a failure,

  36. that nothing you do matters,

  37. that you never measure up, and there's always one more

  38. hurdle to get over.

  39. Remember,

  40. this is our default setting,

  41. as fallen human beings.

  42. And the question is, is there anything to get us off

  43. that default setting?

  44. To get us to not worship things,

  45. which in the end will destroy us?

  46. Again, from that same address,

  47. David Foster Wallace goes on to say,

  48. the so-called real world

  49. will not discourage you

  50. from operating on your default settings.

  51. Because the so-called real world

  52. of men

  53. and money

  54. and power

  55. hums merrily along

  56. in a pool of fear

  57. and anger

  58. and frustration

  59. and craving

  60. and worship of self.

  61. Cynical?

  62. Maybe.

  63. Maybe not.

  64. Maybe not.

  65. It seems we have to look somewhere else then,

  66. than the so-called real world.

  67. And where do we look?

  68. Well, this morning,

  69. we're going to look at Exodus,

    Exodus 7 chapter mention

  70. chapters 7 through 10.

  71. To a biblical text

  72. that I think is aimed

  73. at nothing less

  74. than the utter destruction

  75. of our so-called default settings.

  76. It's aimed at the realignment

  77. of our hearts

  78. to that which is truly

  79. and alone

  80. worthy of worship.

  81. So why don't we turn there together?

  82. That's page 49

  83. in the Pew Bibles.

  84. Exodus

    Exodus 7 chapter mention

  85. chapter 7 through 10.

  86. Page 49.

  87. We're going to look at a big chunk

  88. of scripture this morning,

  89. so let me encourage you

  90. to turn there.

  91. Even if you're not

  92. super familiar with the Bible,

  93. just go to page 49

  94. and you'll be able

  95. to follow right along.

  96. Now, as you turn there,

  97. you'll notice,

  98. maybe from some of the subject headings,

  99. that Exodus chapter 7

    Exodus 7 chapter mention

  100. begins the famous story

  101. of the ten plagues.

  102. In fact,

  103. this section of Exodus

  104. begins back in chapter 6

  105. with the genealogy of Moses

  106. in verse 14.

  107. In the ancient world,

  108. in ancient texts,

  109. genealogies were sort of ways

  110. of marking out

  111. a new section in the work.

  112. It was sort of a signal

  113. of a new chapter

  114. in the story.

  115. You see that in the book of Genesis

  116. over and over and over again.

  117. Whenever the story

  118. takes a new turn,

  119. it's introduced by a genealogy.

  120. The same thing's happening here

  121. in Exodus.

  122. This new chapter

  123. is starting

  124. and this,

  125. at last,

  126. will be the chapter

  127. in this story

  128. of how God rescues

  129. his people

  130. from slavery at last.

  131. Here we go.

  132. And we're going to take

  133. the next three weeks

  134. to look at this narrative

  135. of the plagues.

  136. Next week,

  137. we're going to get into

  138. the hardening

  139. of Pharaoh's heart.

  140. Sorry if you were really hoping

  141. we'd get into that

  142. this morning.

  143. You've got to come back

  144. next week.

  145. Two weeks from now,

  146. we're going to look

  147. at the Passover,

  148. which is the sort of

  149. climactic

  150. and last

  151. tenth plague.

  152. But today,

  153. what we're going to do

  154. is we're going to look

  155. at the first nine plagues

  156. in chapters 7 through 10

  157. as a whole.

  158. And we're going to ask

  159. the big,

  160. overarching question

  161. of,

  162. what are the plagues

  163. all about?

  164. Why

  165. the plagues?

  166. Now,

  167. you might be saying

  168. to yourself,

  169. well,

  170. gee,

  171. I thought the plagues

  172. were all about

  173. the Israelites

  174. being rescued

  175. from their oppressors

  176. in Egypt.

  177. And that is true.

  178. But as we look

  179. a little more closely

  180. at how this story

  181. unfolds,

  182. we find that there's

  183. an even bigger purpose

  184. at work.

  185. And it's a purpose

  186. that strikes

  187. to the very core

  188. of our hearts today.

  189. A purpose that seeks

  190. to conquer

  191. those default settings

  192. in our hearts

  193. of misplaced worship

  194. and our love of praise

  195. and our obsession

  196. of making a name

  197. for ourselves.

  198. Because you see,

  199. the plagues,

  200. what the plagues

  201. are all about really

  202. is God

  203. magnifying

  204. his name.

  205. It's about God

  206. making his name

  207. great.

  208. Turn with me

  209. to Exodus 9,

    Exodus 9:13

  210. verse 13.

  211. That's page 51.

  212. As I mentioned,

  213. the first nine plagues

  214. in the story

  215. span chapters 7

  216. through 10.

  217. And we're going to cover

  218. as much of that terrain

  219. as we can

  220. this morning.

  221. But I want to begin

  222. by giving us

  223. a foothold

  224. right here

  225. in the middle

  226. of the story.

  227. We're going to jump

  228. right into the middle

  229. and begin here

  230. in Exodus 9,

    Exodus 9:13–16

  231. verses 13 through 16.

  232. So Exodus 9, 13.

  233. This is the beginning

  234. of the seventh plague.

  235. Then the Lord said

  236. to Moses,

  237. Rise up early

  238. in the morning

  239. and present yourself

  240. to Pharaoh

  241. before Pharaoh

  242. and say to him,

  243. Thus says the Lord,

  244. the God of the Hebrews,

  245. Let my people go

  246. that they may serve me.

  247. For this time

  248. I will send

  249. all my plagues

  250. on you yourself

  251. and on your servants

  252. and your people

  253. so that you may know

  254. that there is none

  255. like me

  256. in all the earth.

  257. For by now

  258. I could have put out

  259. my hand

  260. and struck you

  261. and your people

  262. with pestilence

  263. and you would have been

  264. cut off from the earth.

  265. But for this purpose

  266. I have raised you up

  267. to show you my power

  268. so that my name

  269. may be proclaimed

  270. in all the earth.

  271. It's hard to miss there,

  272. isn't it?

  273. God does what he does

  274. in these chapters

  275. so that his name

  276. may be proclaimed

  277. in all the earth.

  278. In other words,

  279. for the purpose

  280. of making his name great

  281. before the whole world.

  282. That's the big idea.

  283. And that runs

  284. like a refrain

  285. throughout chapter 7

  286. through 10.

  287. Let me show you.

  288. Let's skip around.

  289. Let's take a cross section

  290. of this section

  291. of scripture.

  292. Turn to chapter 7

  293. verse 5.

  294. If you're new

  295. to the Bible,

  296. by the way,

  297. the big numbers

  298. are the chapters

  299. and the small numbers

  300. are the verses.

  301. Exodus 7 verse 5.

    Exodus 7:5

  302. Let me read.

  303. We're going to jump

  304. through these pretty quickly.

  305. The Egyptians

  306. shall know

  307. that I am the Lord.

  308. There it is.

  309. When I stretch out

  310. my hand against Egypt

  311. and bring out

  312. the people of Israel

  313. from among them.

  314. Exodus 7 verse 17.

    Exodus 7:17

  315. Thus says the Lord,

  316. by this you shall know

  317. that I am the Lord.

  318. Behold,

  319. with the staff

  320. that is in my hand

  321. I will strike the water

  322. that is in the Nile

  323. and it shall turn into blood.

  324. Exodus 8 verse 10.

    Exodus 8:10

  325. Pharaoh says,

  326. tomorrow.

  327. And Moses says,

  328. be it as you say.

  329. Why?

  330. So that you may know

  331. that there is no one

  332. like the Lord our God.

  333. Exodus 8 verse 22.

    Exodus 8:22

  334. Look at the end

  335. of that verse.

  336. That you may know

  337. that I am the Lord

  338. in the midst of the earth.

  339. We saw it twice

  340. in chapter 9 verses 13 through 16.

  341. But turn to Exodus 10 too.

  342. Here God's speaking

  343. to the Israelites.

  344. So that you may tell

  345. in the hearing of your son

  346. and of your grandson

  347. how I've dealt harshly

  348. with the Egyptians

  349. and what signs

  350. I have done among them

  351. that you may know

  352. that I am the Lord.

  353. The plagues are about God

  354. making himself known

  355. and magnifying his name.

  356. But how does God

  357. go about doing that?

  358. How does he magnify his name

  359. that we might know

  360. that he alone is the Lord?

  361. Well, as the plagues progress

  362. we see how God does that.

  363. And that's what we're going

  364. to try to unpack this morning.

  365. And the first thing

  366. that we see is that God

  367. magnifies his name

  368. in judgment.

  369. This is our first point.

  370. Turn back again

  371. to chapter 7.

  372. Kind of start at the beginning.

  373. In the beginning

  374. of this chapter

  375. God recommissions Moses

  376. after the disappointment

  377. and discouragement

  378. of chapters 5 and 6.

  379. Then in verses 8 through 13

  380. Moses and Aaron

  381. perform a preliminary sign

  382. before Pharaoh.

  383. Aaron's staff

  384. turns into a fearsome snake,

  385. a fearsome serpent

  386. and ends up swallowing

  387. the staffs

  388. of Pharaoh's magicians

  389. which is a bit of a preview

  390. of what's to come.

  391. And then in verse 14

  392. the plagues begin.

  393. And in order to understand

  394. sort of the meaning

  395. of the plagues

  396. and how they sort of unfold

  397. this theme of God

  398. magnifying his name

  399. I think it's helpful

  400. to see that the way

  401. in which the biblical author

  402. has structured this account

  403. is that the first nine plagues

  404. kind of come at us

  405. in three sets of three.

  406. The blood and frogs

  407. and gnats

  408. are sort of one cycle

  409. and then the flies

  410. and the livestock plague

  411. and the boils

  412. are sort of a second cycle

  413. and then lastly

  414. the hail

  415. and the locust

  416. and the darkness

  417. are kind of the last cycle.

  418. And where do we get that?

  419. Where do we see that?

  420. Well actually

  421. the literary structure

  422. is pretty clear

  423. once you see it.

  424. Again let's fly over

  425. the passage together

  426. and notice a pattern

  427. that starts to emerge.

  428. We're going to look at

  429. plagues 1, 2, and 3

  430. real quick

  431. just at the beginning

  432. of each of the plagues.

  433. You can probably

  434. just follow along

  435. by looking at the subject headings

  436. in your ESV.

  437. Look at 7.15

  438. the beginning

  439. of the first plague.

  440. How does God describe it?

  441. He says 7.15

  442. Go out to Pharaoh

  443. in the morning

  444. as he goes out

  445. to the water.

  446. Now jump down

  447. to 8.1

  448. the next plague.

  449. The Lord said to Moses

  450. go into Pharaoh.

  451. Now go to the third plague

  452. 8.16

  453. and there's no warning at all.

  454. Go out

  455. to Pharaoh

  456. in the morning

  457. go into Pharaoh

  458. no warning.

  459. Now watch that same pattern

  460. happen again

  461. in plagues 4, 5, and 6.

  462. 8.20

  463. Rise up early

  464. in the morning

  465. present yourself

  466. to Pharaoh

  467. as he goes out

  468. to the water.

  469. Oh that sounds familiar.

  470. Plague 5

  471. then the Lord said

  472. to Moses

  473. go into Pharaoh.

  474. Plague 6

  475. 9.8

  476. no warning.

  477. And again

  478. the same thing happens

  479. for plagues 7, 8, and 9.

  480. Go out to Pharaoh

  481. in the morning

  482. go into Pharaoh

  483. and then the last one

  484. comes without a warning.

  485. You see those are signals

  486. that the biblical author

  487. is giving us

  488. so that we can understand

  489. how this thing

  490. is unfolding.

  491. And once you see

  492. that threefold structure

  493. you begin to realize

  494. that each cycle

  495. of three

  496. brings out

  497. a different element

  498. of God magnifying

  499. his name.

  500. Each one

  501. building

  502. on the last.

  503. And as this first cycle

  504. kind of breaks upon us

  505. as we've said

  506. God shows us

  507. that he's magnifying

  508. his name

  509. in judgment.

  510. You see

  511. when God

  512. through Moses

  513. turns the Nile

  514. into blood

  515. in verse 7, 14

  516. and following

  517. he's not just

  518. sort of doing

  519. a random

  520. act of power

  521. it's not sort of

  522. a large scale

  523. party trick.

  524. Ha ha!

  525. You see

  526. for the Egyptians

  527. the Nile

  528. as Greg mentioned

  529. a few weeks ago

  530. was worshipped

  531. as a God.

  532. It was their life source.

  533. So right from the start

  534. God is enacting

  535. a judgment

  536. on the so called

  537. gods of Egypt.

  538. Proving

  539. that they are

  540. no gods at all

  541. but that they are

  542. mere idols.

  543. And that the one

  544. who really controls

  545. the life source

  546. of this people

  547. and all peoples

  548. is the God

  549. of the Hebrews

  550. the Lord.

  551. But just when things

  552. start to get off

  553. the ground

  554. Pharaoh's magicians

  555. enter the scene

  556. again.

  557. And they too

  558. it seems

  559. can turn water

  560. to blood

  561. by their secret arts.

  562. and so the battle

  563. is on.

  564. Round one

  565. seems to be a tie.

  566. What about round two?

  567. God unleashes

  568. hordes of frogs

  569. from the Nile

  570. so many

  571. that they begin

  572. to infest

  573. the cookware

  574. the ovens

  575. the beds.

  576. Imagine that

  577. crawling into bed

  578. at night

  579. finding nothing

  580. but frogs.

  581. In Australia

  582. actually

  583. there are things

  584. called cane toads

  585. which are giant

  586. they're like this big

  587. they're disgusting.

  588. Rhys

  589. you know what I'm

  590. talking about.

  591. And they're everywhere.

  592. Imagine that

  593. opening up

  594. your pot

  595. to cook

  596. and out

  597. jumps a frog.

  598. But the magicians

  599. step up

  600. and they too

  601. it seems

  602. can make frogs

  603. appear.

  604. But it's a bit

  605. of an irony

  606. isn't it?

  607. This is only

  608. a sort of

  609. partial victory

  610. for the magicians

  611. because

  612. haha

  613. they can make

  614. the frogs appear

  615. and yet

  616. that's not really

  617. the problem

  618. is it?

  619. We want the frogs

  620. to go away.

  621. So

  622. Pharaoh

  623. wisely

  624. appeals to Moses

  625. and he seems

  626. to concede

  627. okay Moses

  628. fine

  629. you win.

  630. but as soon

  631. as the Lord

  632. removes the frogs

  633. Pharaoh

  634. hardens his heart

  635. and refuses

  636. to let the people

  637. go.

  638. Then comes

  639. round three

  640. and this time

  641. there's no warning

  642. and there's

  643. no contest.

  644. Aaron

  645. strikes the dust

  646. of the earth

  647. and as the dust

  648. rises from the

  649. strike of his

  650. staff

  651. suddenly gnats

  652. mosquitoes

  653. begin to rise

  654. and sweep

  655. over the land.

  656. and the magicians

  657. try to do the same

  658. and yet

  659. they are bested

  660. and in 819

  661. the magicians

  662. admit defeat.

  663. This is the

  664. finger of God

  665. they say.

  666. But you see

  667. this contest

  668. is about more

  669. than God

  670. foiling

  671. some ancient

  672. magicians.

  673. This is a

  674. contest

  675. about who

  676. controls

  677. creation.

  678. Who

  679. is the

  680. rightful

  681. authority?

  682. The gods

  683. of Egypt

  684. or the

  685. one true

  686. God of Israel?

  687. Pharaoh

  688. and his

  689. magicians

  690. or the

  691. Lord?

  692. And as the

  693. Nile

  694. runs with

  695. blood

  696. and as the

  697. piles of

  698. dead frogs

  699. fill the land

  700. with their

  701. horrible smell

  702. and as the

  703. gnats fill

  704. the air

  705. God is

  706. giving them

  707. a clear

  708. uncomfortable

  709. sign

  710. that he

  711. is the

  712. Lord

  713. of creation

  714. and not

  715. them.

  716. And as the

  717. cycles continue

  718. the plagues

  719. intensify

  720. in severity.

  721. You know

  722. this first cycle

  723. is kind of gross

  724. as it might be

  725. blood

  726. and frogs

  727. and irritating

  728. as it might

  729. be with gnats

  730. not necessarily

  731. the most

  732. hygienic

  733. situation.

  734. It's a bit

  735. unfortunate

  736. it's a bit

  737. uncomfortable.

  738. But then comes

  739. the second

  740. cycle

  741. and flies

  742. will swarm

  743. their houses

  744. and ruin

  745. their land

  746. and a severe

  747. plague will

  748. kill the

  749. livestock

  750. which is a bit

  751. like your

  752. 401k losing

  753. 50, 60,

  754. 70 percent.

  755. And then

  756. finally

  757. soot from

  758. a kiln

  759. will again

  760. sweep

  761. through the

  762. land

  763. and this

  764. time

  765. not just

  766. irritating

  767. gnats

  768. that you

  769. need to

  770. flick away

  771. but boils

  772. on the

  773. skin.

  774. And the

  775. magicians

  776. at the

  777. end of

  778. plague

  779. six

  780. at the

  781. end of

  782. the second

  783. cycle

  784. now can't

  785. even stand

  786. before Moses

  787. because they're

  788. so sorely

  789. afflicted.

  790. But then

  791. the severity

  792. increases even

  793. more with the

  794. final cycle

  795. of three.

  796. Hail

  797. and locusts

  798. and darkness

  799. what was

  800. painful and

  801. costly in

  802. the second

  803. cycle

  804. has now

  805. become

  806. utterly

  807. devastating.

  808. By the

  809. end of

  810. the ninth

  811. plague

  812. there'll

  813. be nothing

  814. left

  815. in Egypt

  816. of value.

  817. It's all

  818. gone.

  819. And you

  820. see what's

  821. happening

  822. across these

  823. plagues.

  824. Again

  825. they're not

  826. mere random

  827. displays of

  828. power.

  829. this is the

  830. creator God

  831. exercising his

  832. judgment

  833. on a

  834. rebellious

  835. people

  836. in an

  837. unfolding

  838. act

  839. of

  840. un-creation.

  841. That the

  842. one who

  843. brought

  844. creation

  845. into being

  846. is now

  847. letting it

  848. fall apart.

  849. Piece by

  850. piece

  851. layer by

  852. layer

  853. the land

  854. of Egypt

  855. is reverting

  856. to chaos.

  857. The

  858. created

  859. order is

  860. coming

  861. unraveled.

  862. Frogs

  863. don't stay

  864. where they're

  865. supposed to

  866. stay.

  867. Hail

  868. isn't the

  869. size it's

  870. supposed to

  871. be.

  872. And with

  873. each new

  874. cycle the

  875. breakdown

  876. deepens.

  877. Order in

  878. life is

  879. stripped away

  880. until the

  881. ninth plague

  882. ends in

  883. total

  884. darkness.

  885. darkness.

  886. Do you

  887. remember the

  888. creation week

  889. of Genesis

  890. 1?

  891. Begins with

  892. what?

  893. The creation

  894. of light.

  895. And now

  896. it's as if

  897. creation has

  898. completely

  899. rewound

  900. into darkness.

  901. The light

  902. is made

  903. black and

  904. the un-creation

  905. is complete.

  906. And all

  907. this Exodus

  908. tells us

  909. throughout this

  910. narrative is

  911. a sign.

  912. the plagues

  913. are a sign.

  914. They point

  915. to something.

  916. They point

  917. to the fact

  918. that to

  919. reject our

  920. creator,

  921. to reject

  922. the Lord,

  923. ends

  924. in

  925. disintegration,

  926. chaos,

  927. darkness,

  928. and death.

  929. Of course

  930. the judgment

  931. of God is

  932. not a popular

  933. topic.

  934. But friends,

  935. it is a

  936. reality.

  937. And on

  938. the one

  939. hand,

  940. if it is

  941. a reality,

  942. if God

  943. will judge,

  944. then that

  945. does mean

  946. that our

  947. lives aren't

  948. just a

  949. string of

  950. meaningless

  951. events,

  952. that what

  953. we do

  954. does actually

  955. count in

  956. the grand

  957. scheme of

  958. things,

  959. and they

  960. will be

  961. counted in

  962. the grand

  963. scheme of

  964. things.

  965. God's

  966. judgment

  967. isn't

  968. just

  969. real,

  970. it's

  971. also

  972. perfectly

  973. just.

  974. Like the

  975. Egyptians,

  976. we often

  977. live our

  978. lives without

  979. any reference

  980. to the true

  981. God.

  982. We ignore

  983. him in the

  984. world that

  985. he has

  986. made.

  987. We reject

  988. his law

  989. and want

  990. nothing to

  991. do with

  992. him.

  993. we choose

  994. other gods

  995. and so

  996. God gives

  997. us exactly

  998. what we

  999. ask for.

  1000. The wages

  1001. of sin

  1002. is death,

  1003. Paul will

  1004. say in

  1005. Romans 6.

  1006. And friends,

  1007. what that

  1008. means is

  1009. that this

  1010. God,

  1011. this God

  1012. is the

  1013. one with

  1014. whom we

  1015. really have

  1016. to do.

  1017. The most

  1018. important thing

  1019. in your

  1020. life is not

  1021. what job

  1022. you have

  1023. or what

  1024. college you

  1025. graduated

  1026. from.

  1027. The most

  1028. pressing

  1029. issue of

  1030. your life

  1031. is not

  1032. how beautiful

  1033. or successful

  1034. or wealthy

  1035. you can

  1036. become,

  1037. how much

  1038. comfort you

  1039. can stock

  1040. up,

  1041. how much

  1042. status you

  1043. can win.

  1044. It's not

  1045. about getting

  1046. a spouse

  1047. or starting

  1048. a family.

  1049. The most

  1050. pressing

  1051. issue before

  1052. each and

  1053. every one

  1054. of us

  1055. is to

  1056. be

  1057. reconciled

  1058. to God,

  1059. our

  1060. creator.

  1061. What does

  1062. it profit,

  1063. Jesus said,

  1064. to gain

  1065. the whole

  1066. world

  1067. and lose

  1068. your soul?

  1069. And the

  1070. plagues are

  1071. here before

  1072. us like a

  1073. megaphone.

  1074. They're like

  1075. smelling salts

  1076. getting us

  1077. to wake up

  1078. from our

  1079. stupor

  1080. to realize

  1081. that God

  1082. is God

  1083. and he

  1084. must be

  1085. the center

  1086. of our

  1087. lives.

  1088. And all

  1089. the pursuits

  1090. that we

  1091. wrap our

  1092. lives around,

  1093. no matter

  1094. how great

  1095. they may

  1096. seem in

  1097. the world's

  1098. eyes,

  1099. work and

  1100. sex and

  1101. wealth and

  1102. success,

  1103. all right,

  1104. all good,

  1105. in their

  1106. proper place

  1107. are nothing

  1108. compared to

  1109. God.

  1110. And to

  1111. reject God

  1112. for those

  1113. things can

  1114. mean nothing

  1115. but eternal

  1116. death.

  1117. It's like

  1118. we're sawing

  1119. the branch

  1120. that we

  1121. stand on

  1122. at any

  1123. moment.

  1124. Down we

  1125. go.

  1126. My friends,

  1127. the message

  1128. of the

  1129. plagues

  1130. is not

  1131. just that

  1132. God magnifies

  1133. his name

  1134. in judgment.

  1135. In the

  1136. second cycle

  1137. of plagues

  1138. we see

  1139. that God

  1140. magnifies

  1141. his name

  1142. in salvation.

  1143. As the

  1144. judgments

  1145. increase,

  1146. as the

  1147. destruction

  1148. mounts,

  1149. what do

  1150. we find?

  1151. We find

  1152. the Lord

  1153. sheltering

  1154. his people

  1155. from the

  1156. coming wrath.

  1157. Look at

  1158. the beginning

  1159. of the

  1160. second cycle

  1161. in chapter

  1162. 8,

  1163. verse 20.

  1164. Chapter

  1165. 8,

  1166. verse 20.

  1167. I'm going

  1168. to read

  1169. these first

  1170. few verses.

  1171. Then the

  1172. Lord said

  1173. to Moses,

  1174. rise up

  1175. early in

  1176. the morning

  1177. and present

  1178. yourself to

  1179. Pharaoh as

  1180. he goes out

  1181. to the

  1182. water and

  1183. say to him,

  1184. thus says

  1185. the Lord,

  1186. let my

  1187. people go

  1188. that they

  1189. may serve

  1190. me.

  1191. Or else,

  1192. if you

  1193. will not

  1194. let my

  1195. people go,

  1196. behold,

  1197. I will send

  1198. swarms of

  1199. flies on you

  1200. and your

  1201. servants and

  1202. your people

  1203. and into

  1204. your houses.

  1205. And the

  1206. houses of

  1207. the Egyptians

  1208. shall be

  1209. filled with

  1210. swarms of

  1211. flies and

  1212. also the

  1213. ground on

  1214. which they

  1215. stand.

  1216. But on

  1217. that day

  1218. I will set

  1219. apart the

  1220. land of

  1221. Goshen where

  1222. my people

  1223. dwell so

  1224. that no

  1225. swarms of

  1226. flies shall

  1227. be there,

  1228. that you

  1229. may know

  1230. that I am

  1231. the Lord

  1232. in the

  1233. midst of

  1234. the earth.

  1235. Thus I

  1236. will put a

  1237. division between

  1238. my people

  1239. and your

  1240. people.

  1241. Tomorrow this

  1242. sign shall

  1243. happen.

  1244. God

  1245. Why does

  1246. God stop

  1247. the plagues

  1248. from ravaging

  1249. the people

  1250. of Israel

  1251. living in

  1252. Goshen?

  1253. Are they

  1254. more deserving

  1255. than the

  1256. Egyptians?

  1257. Do they

  1258. have a more

  1259. impeccable

  1260. moral record?

  1261. No.

  1262. They are the

  1263. recipients of

  1264. God's grace,

  1265. of his

  1266. undeserved

  1267. favor.

  1268. And he

  1269. sets them

  1270. apart so

  1271. that all

  1272. the world

  1273. might know

  1274. that he

  1275. is the

  1276. Lord.

  1277. We see

  1278. this highlighted

  1279. again in the

  1280. fifth plague,

  1281. and in the

  1282. seventh plague,

  1283. and in the

  1284. ninth plague.

  1285. We're told

  1286. that God

  1287. keeps his

  1288. people safe.

  1289. You know,

  1290. I wonder for

  1291. those living

  1292. through the

  1293. plagues at

  1294. that time,

  1295. was it more

  1296. of a wonder

  1297. to see the

  1298. flies swarm

  1299. and the

  1300. livestock die

  1301. and the

  1302. hail fall

  1303. and the

  1304. darkness

  1305. descend?

  1306. Or was it

  1307. more of a

  1308. wonder to

  1309. see the

  1310. flies and

  1311. the hail

  1312. inexplicably

  1313. stop right

  1314. at the

  1315. border of

  1316. Goshen?

  1317. Was it

  1318. more of a

  1319. wonder to

  1320. see their

  1321. livestock

  1322. remaining

  1323. healthy?

  1324. Was it

  1325. more of a

  1326. wonder to

  1327. see the

  1328. sun shining

  1329. there,

  1330. though all

  1331. else had

  1332. gone black?

  1333. God was

  1334. magnifying his

  1335. name in

  1336. salvation.

  1337. I mean,

  1338. think about

  1339. it.

  1340. After all,

  1341. there's glory,

  1342. isn't there,

  1343. when a team of

  1344. firefighters show

  1345. up on the

  1346. scene and

  1347. they just

  1348. douse a

  1349. home with

  1350. water.

  1351. That's a

  1352. home that's

  1353. on fire.

  1354. They just

  1355. put it out

  1356. and blow

  1357. it away.

  1358. That's pretty

  1359. awesome.

  1360. glory.

  1361. But isn't

  1362. there more

  1363. glory when

  1364. they enter

  1365. the burning

  1366. building and

  1367. bring out the

  1368. survivors in

  1369. the midst of

  1370. it?

  1371. And,

  1372. friends,

  1373. just so,

  1374. God's glory is

  1375. seen in his

  1376. judgment, his

  1377. sovereignty, his

  1378. justice, his

  1379. holiness, but

  1380. how much more in

  1381. his salvation

  1382. through judgment?

  1383. We see this

  1384. again and again in

  1385. the Bible, don't

  1386. we?

  1387. Think of the

  1388. flood.

  1389. The flood was a

  1390. display of God's

  1391. power and holy

  1392. justice, but

  1393. rescuing a family

  1394. in the ark through

  1395. the flood made

  1396. God's name great.

  1397. Jump ahead to the

  1398. exile to Babylon,

  1399. which was a

  1400. display, again, of

  1401. God's perfect

  1402. character.

  1403. But rescuing and

  1404. preserving a

  1405. remnant through the

  1406. exile displayed God's

  1407. faithfulness and his

  1408. mercy.

  1409. And just so here,

  1410. bringing the

  1411. Egyptian nation to

  1412. its knees in

  1413. judgment made God's

  1414. name great, but how

  1415. much more carrying

  1416. out a whole people

  1417. safely through the

  1418. midst of those

  1419. plagues, protecting

  1420. them, sheltering

  1421. them.

  1422. And here's where the

  1423. rubber hits the road

  1424. for us.

  1425. Have you ever

  1426. wondered, have you

  1427. ever doubted whether

  1428. God is willing to

  1429. save?

  1430. Friends, the reality

  1431. is that right now,

  1432. during this sermon,

  1433. you, right in your

  1434. seat, can turn from

  1435. sin, trust in Christ,

  1436. Christ, and be saved

  1437. from death and

  1438. judgment.

  1439. But do you wonder

  1440. whether God would

  1441. really receive you

  1442. with your sins and

  1443. your fears and your

  1444. doubts and your

  1445. pride?

  1446. God.

  1447. But remember, friend, he

  1448. doesn't save because of

  1449. how great you are.

1450. He saves because of how

  1451. great he is.

1452. And look at how great he

  1453. is.

1454. There is none like him.

  1455. He shelters his people.

1456. He sets them apart for the

1457. sake of his great name.

  1458. He's incomparable like

  1459. none other.

1460. And that leads us to our

  1461. third point.

1462. God magnifies his name in

  1463. judgment and in

  1464. salvation.

1465. And the third cycle of

  1466. plagues, chapter 9,

  1467. verse 13, through the

1468. end of chapter 10, God

  1469. shows us that he

  1470. magnifies his name beyond

  1471. all compare.

1472. That he's like no other.

  1473. God judges, God saves,

1474. and God does what no one

  1475. else can do.

1476. Where do we see that?

1477. As the last three plagues

  1478. rain down their

  1479. destruction, it's the

  1480. totality and it's the

  1481. magnitude of them that

1482. set them apart from the

  1483. previous plagues.

  1484. Look at chapter 9,

  1485. verse 24.

  1486. Chapter 9, verse 24,

1487. there was hail and fire

  1488. flashing continually in the

1489. midst of the hail, very

1490. heavy hail such as had

1491. never been in all the land

1492. of Egypt since it became a

  1493. nation.

1494. And that same thing is said

1495. of the locusts in chapter

  1496. 10, verse 14.

  1497. Chapter 10, verse 14, the

1498. locusts came up over all the

1499. land of Egypt and settled on

1500. the whole country of Egypt,

1501. such a dense swarm of

1502. locusts as had never been

1503. before nor ever will be

  1504. again.

1505. Like nothing that ever had

1506. been or ever will be.

1507. And the magnitude of the

1508. hail and the locusts and the

  1509. other devastation that they

  1510. bring, verse 10, 15 says,

1511. not a green thing remained,

1512. neither tree nor plant of the

1513. field through all the land of

  1514. Egypt.

  1515. That complete devastation,

1516. all of that is matched by the

1517. complete darkness of the ninth

  1518. plague.

1519. A darkness so thick you could

1520. feel it, the writer says.

1521. And that ninth plague would have

1522. been perhaps the most powerful

  1523. symbolic message to the

  1524. Egyptians.

1525. Because you see the sun in

  1526. Egyptian culture was their

1527. supreme god, the god Ra.

  1528. Its worship was pervasive,

1529. especially in the official palace

1530. and in the rituals there.

1531. But this last plague is saying

1532. to the Egyptians, and for that

1533. matter saying to us, take the

  1534. greatest, take the highest

1535. conception that you have of God.

1536. Take your highest, most exalted,

1537. most powerful thing that you can

1538. imagine, whatever that God is.

1539. And the reality is, the blazing

1540. glory of the Lord, the true God,

1541. makes such a God seem like

  1542. darkness in comparison.

1543. There's none like him, none

  1544. greater, none higher.

1545. He is beyond all compare.

1546. And so great is this God, so

1547. unexpected, so incomparable, that in

1548. this last cycle of plagues, he

  1549. actually does the unthinkable.

1550. And he offers mercy to his enemies.

1551. Though Pharaoh's heart is hardened

  1552. toward ever-increasing destruction,

1553. as this third cycle of plagues

1554. begins, the Lord warns and invites

  1555. the Egyptian people.

  1556. He says, come.

  1557. Look at chapter 9, verse 19.

  1558. Now, therefore, get your

1559. livestock and all that you have in

1560. the field into safe shelter, for

1561. every man and beast that is in the

1562. field and is not brought home will

  1563. die.

1564. God calls out to them in mercy and

1565. invites the Egyptians to take

1566. shelter from the coming wrath.

  1567. And what about us?

1568. Friends, the reality is that God

  1569. will come.

1570. The Creator will one day come in

1571. fullness to his creation and put it

  1572. right again.

1573. God, our true judge, will come and put

1574. an end to evil and wrong.

1575. And the question is, where will we

  1576. find shelter?

1577. Now, as we think about that

1578. question, I hope you see, I hope you

1579. see that this passage that we're

1580. looking at actually offers much hope

  1581. to a hurting world.

1582. Because what we have on display here,

1583. in no uncertain terms, is the great

1584. truth that the oppressive schemes of

1585. Pharaoh and of every Pharaoh who's

1586. come since then, all those oppressive

1587. schemes will not have the final word

1588. that in justice and slavery and evil,

1589. God will put it all to rights with

1590. perfect justice and with perfect

  1591. judgment.

1592. And that is good news.

1593. When the Psalms tell us of God's

1594. return as king to judge, do you know

1595. how the scene is pictured?

1596. The trees are clapping their hands

1597. and the oceans are roaring in praise

1598. because God's finally going to release

1599. creation from the evil that has

  1600. infested it.

1601. God's judgment is good news for the

  1602. world.

1603. The days of evil are numbered.

1604. But the pointed question is, is God's

1605. judgment good news for me?

1606. Because friends, I see my heart and it

1607. is so often on the side of selfishness

1608. and wrong and so often callous to the

1609. suffering of others and so often greedy

  1610. for my own comforts.

  1611. God's judgmental.

1612. And when God's justice is revealed, what hope

  1613. is there?

1614. Not just for me, but for you.

1615. Where will you and I find shelter?

1616. And you have to see that that's a problem

1617. that runs throughout the Old Testament.

1618. God again and again and again promises

1619. to judge, to rescue the world from darkness.

1620. But the question remains, what fallen human

1621. being would be left to stand when the light

  1622. shines in?

1623. And the answer finally comes in the New Testament.

1624. God comes in human flesh.

1625. The true and rightful judge of all walks among us.

1626. But in the most surprising and in the moment

1627. confusing turn of events, the judge of all creation

  1628. salvation is judged.

1629. We've read earlier that Jesus saves us

1630. from the wrath to come.

1631. How does he do it, friends?

1632. How does Jesus save us from the wrath to come?

  1633. From darkness and death.

1634. He does it by going into the darkness for us.

1635. You see, those three days of darkness in Egypt,

1636. that ninth plague, does it not point us ahead

1637. to the cross where for three hours of darkness,

1638. the Son of God died in the place of sinners,

1639. going into the darkness of God's judgment

1640. so that we don't have to.

1641. Christ died and rose again to rescue all of those

1642. and everyone who would turn from their sins

  1643. and believe in him.

1644. God magnifies his name most supremely at the cross

1645. for it's there that his judgment

  1646. and his salvation meet

1647. so that his enemies might become

  1648. his beloved friends

1649. so that we can all find shelter,

1650. so that we can all know protection.

1651. And when you see that,

  1652. when you see that,

1653. and when you know that,

1654. and when you come to take hold of him by faith,

  1655. suddenly,

1656. you don't need to obsess

1657. about your name being great anymore.

1658. When your heart is captured by who he is

  1659. and what he's done,

1660. suddenly you're freed from having to make a name

  1661. for yourself

  1662. because instead,

1663. you want his name to look great.

  1664. That's what drives you.

  1665. Finally, you're worshiping

1666. the one thing worthy of all our praise.

1667. Now the reality is, friends,

  1668. that maybe the Lord

1669. will give you success in the world's eyes.

  1670. Maybe he won't.

1671. At the end of the day,

1672. all of that is in his hands.

1673. Our little match will flicker

1674. one way or the other,

1675. but his torch is going to burn bright

  1676. for all eternity.

1677. And our desire is to be close to his heat

1678. and to bask in his light

1679. and to know that there,

  1680. that is freedom.

1681. That is the worship for which we were made.

  1682. His is the name

1683. that is worthy of making great.

1684. We want to magnify his name,

  1685. not ours.

1686. And we want to make him known

  1687. in all the earth.

1688. We want his mark to be left

  1689. on our communities

  1690. and on our families

  1691. and in our neighborhoods.

1692. And if we leave a mark,

  1693. so be it.

1694. But we want his name to be known.

1695. And we want it to be known as great.

  1696. Let's pray.

  1697. And now, Lord Jesus,

1698. we pray that you would do just that.

1699. You would help us by your Holy Spirit

1700. to make your name great

  1701. in our actions,

  1702. in our thoughts,

1703. in our words and deeds.

  1704. Lord, help us,

  1705. depending on your grace,

1706. to make much of you

  1707. as a church,

1708. to make much of you

  1709. as students,

1710. to make much of you

  1711. in our workplaces,

1712. to make much of you

  1713. with our neighbors

  1714. and our friends.

  1715. Lord, free us

  1716. from the obsession

  1717. of pride

1718. and the love of praise

  1719. and help us

  1720. to be lost

  1721. in you,

  1722. lost in wonder,

  1723. love,

  1724. and praise.

  1725. We pray this

  1726. in Jesus' name,

  1727. Father.

  1728. Amen.
