  1. Now, friends, it's a great delight to be here in these four weeks as we talk about kind of the theology of worship.

  2. I figure that we know the elements of a church service.

  3. We know that we're going to sing, we know that we're going to pray or listen to the scriptures read and taught.

  4. But I find, at least at home, that there isn't great depth in understanding why we do what we do.

  5. So, adding to that, the kind of contemporary issue that people think regular church attendance is twice a month.

  6. Now, it might be a little different here, I'm not sure, though some of the pastors at Trinity think that probably that's becoming more and more of an expectation or a standard in the US as well.

  7. But certainly at home, if a person turns up twice a month, they see themselves as being very committed to this church.

  8. Now, when I first became a Christian when I was 13, it wasn't just you went to church twice a month, you went to church twice a Sunday.

  9. You were expected to come to church to the morning worship and the evening.

  10. We used to call it a gospel service, kind of a youth service.

  11. And notice then, just in the course of my own life, how our expectations have changed.

  12. So, it's a good question to ask, not just what do we do in a church service, but why do we do it and how do we think we should benefit from doing it regularly.

  13. So, that's kind of driving my interest in this four-part series.

  14. Now, I love you guys asking questions along the way.

  15. There are no dumb questions, there are just dumb answers.

  16. So, please don't feel self-conscious about putting up your hand, rugby tackling me from the microphone or something like that.

  17. But, I love your interaction.

  18. So, please feel free to do that, okay?

  19. I know that on Sunday morning, it's probably easier to err on the passive side and kind of listen.

  20. And if that's your thing, that's fine.

  21. But, please don't feel afraid to ask a question if you have a question that's...

  22. Just a comment.

  23. Or a comment even, of course.

  24. Yeah, yeah, do it all you want.

  25. No, the more the merrier.

  26. My comment is that we're called to worship, the why is that we're called to worship because we were built to worship.

  27. And because God tells us to worship Him.

  28. Sure, sure.

  29. Does He tell us to worship Him every week?

  30. He gives us a Sabbath that He made it holy.

  31. Sure.

  32. Yeah.

  33. Sure.

  34. Well, then that still begs other questions, doesn't it?

  35. Whether the Old Testament Sabbath is for Christians today and what it means that we have an eternal Sabbath that we're waiting for.

  36. So, these are the kinds of questions that I want to raise.

  37. And to do it in a friendly way, I'm trying to give us each week a big metaphor.

  38. A big idea that will somehow build our conversation, but perhaps as well help our memory.

  39. And this week, the metaphor that I'm appealing to is that worship is a compass.

  40. With my students, at least, having some of these picture words is very, very helpful because it's not just that I want to teach them, but I want them to teach others as well.

  41. And so, the more tools they have in their kit, pictures or kind of ideas that are readily transferable, that helps me and helps them too, I hope.

  42. Now, I want to start with a definition, though it's pretty loose.

  43. I want to say that worship is simply a God-centered life.

  44. We could unpack it more.

  45. For example, we could say that it's about both adoration and actions.

  46. We could unpack it further and say that it's response to God's revelation.

  47. I think all those are helpfully true.

  48. But it's the first phrase, worship is a God-centered life, that I really want to hold on to in particular.

  49. Because there are big debates about this.

  50. Is worship something you do every day of the week?

  51. Or is worship something you do on Sundays?

  52. Or is worship just that part of the service that's singing?

  53. So there are very broad definitions of worship and very narrow definitions of worship.

  54. And this is a hot debate in many circles.

  55. How do you define worship?

  56. Is worship more about the actions of your week?

  57. Or is worship more the attitudes and responses on Sunday?

  58. And according to your kind of tight or broad definitions, this sometimes becomes quite heated.

  59. So we had Don Carson come to Ridley where I teach to do a preaching school.

  60. He's known for that, right?

  61. And we arrived in chapel and one of my students stands up to begin the chapel service and says,

  62. Welcome this morning to worship.

  63. And at morning tea, not because of Don Carson's kind of influence,

  64. but at morning tea after the chapel service, there was this hot debate.

  65. Some people say you cannot stand up and say welcome to worship.

  66. You're worshiping every day of the week, right?

  67. You can say welcome to chapel or welcome to church, but not welcome to worship.

  68. But if you're on the more Pentecostal end of the Christian spectrum,

  69. you'll define worship even more narrowly to deal with a very particular kind of song

  70. in a very particular place in the church service.

  71. So when I first became a Christian, we had a hymn book in church, right?

  72. There aren't many hymn books around anymore.

  73. But in those days, in a hymn book, you'd have the section called Praise,

  74. and the section called Worship, and the section called Daily Christian Living,

  75. and the section called The Lord's Supper, and the section called Christ's Coming,

  76. or the section called Christ's Passion.

  77. In those days, worship was just a tiny bit of your singing.

  78. But it's as if these days, worship is just that part of the hymn book

  79. that's the first 30 songs.

  80. So there are big debates about how broad or how narrow we should think of worship.

  81. I actually think the Bible uses the worship language in both ways.

  82. So when you look at Romans 12, 1-2, you'll be reminded that worship is for every day, right?

  83. Let me read it to us.

  84. I appeal to you, therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God,

  85. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

  86. holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

  87. Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds

  88. so that you might discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  89. So at least for Paul in Romans 12, worship is just giving your body to God.

  90. And I presume you do that on Sundays and Mondays, right?

  91. That's the broad definition.

  92. Everything you do in your body can be a kind of worship.

  93. But when you get to Revelation chapters 4 and 5,

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  94. the word worship is applied to singing.

  95. Either in Revelation 4, singing about the Creator,

  96. or in Revelation 5, singing about the Redeemer.

  97. In both instances, the songs of worship are offered before the throne.

  98. You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power,

  99. for you created all things, and by your will they existed and they were created.

  100. So I take it that the Bible can use the word worship narrowly,

  101. or can use the word worship broadly.

  102. And I'm happy with both usages of the word.

  103. However, in these four Sunday school sessions,

  104. we're going to be using kind of the more narrow definition,

  105. what we do in church.

  106. Please don't hear me saying that I don't think your Monday to Friday work is worship.

  107. What you do in your body is worship.

  108. But for these weeks at least, for our purposes,

  109. we're narrowing a little our focus.

  110. So I'm going to take a pause for a moment

  111. and ask if you've got any comments or questions

  112. about our learning so far.

  113. Please, Lydia.

  114. You mentioned worship singing to the Creator and the Redeemer.

  115. And I know not very many, but many songs also make a point

  116. to praise the Spirit.

  117. I wondered if you had a comment for or against that or anything.

  118. Yes.

  119. So I think there's no biblical reason why you ought not to worship

  120. or name the Spirit in your worship.

  121. It's just that the Spirit is the shy one

  122. who keeps pushing the glory to the Father and the Son.

  123. So I'm not...

  124. I don't think it's wrong.

  125. And you could ask the same question about your praying.

  126. Should we pray to the Spirit?

  127. I think there's nothing wrong with that.

  128. The Spirit is the Lord, according to 2 Corinthians 4.

  129. But it seems to me that part of the way God works

  130. is that the Spirit helps me in my prayers

  131. to the Father through the Son.

  132. So I think it's probably more appropriate

  133. that we pray to the Father in the end.

  134. In the Scriptures.

  135. In the Scriptures.

  136. Yeah.

  137. Yeah, that's right.

  138. He leads us to the Scriptures.

  139. The Spirit leads us to the Scriptures as well, yes, of course.

  140. And then illuminates them for us in our heart and mind.

  141. Well, this is my basic idea this morning.

  142. I'm a simple man, so there's only going to be one big idea each week.

  143. The big idea is that when we come to church,

  144. when we come to worship,

  145. our main goal is to practice being the creature

  146. and letting God be the creator.

  147. That whatever else we do,

  148. however long the sermon goes,

  149. however long the singing goes,

  150. however long the praying goes,

  151. we've only got one job to do,

  152. and that's to practice being a creature.

  153. Now, this might sound kind of patently obvious,

  154. that you can never escape being the creature,

  155. but let me tell you,

  156. I think that's basically the human problem, right?

  157. That we pretend from time to time

  158. that we actually have the rights of the creator

  159. to create our own world in our own image.

  160. We're created in God's image, of course,

  161. but on the seventh day,

  162. God rests, having made men and women,

  163. so that he might just enjoy the creation

  164. with men and women at its climax.

  165. In a sense, the point of Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  166. is to show us how God loves for us

  167. to enjoy fellowship with him.

  168. He's the creator,

  169. and we've just recently been created, right?

  170. It seems to me the right attitude to have to God

  171. is to see ourselves as creature

  172. and not as a creator.

  173. And in Romans 1,

  174. the inverse is explained,

  175. that basically sin is worshipping the creature

  176. rather than the creator,

  177. who is forever to be praised.

  178. So it seems like to me,

  179. and Romans 1 is important because,

  180. let me read it then,

  181. it contains the worship language.

  182. Romans 1.24,

  183. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts

  184. to impurity,

  185. to the degrading of their bodies amongst themselves,

  186. because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie

  187. and worshipped and served the creature

  188. rather than the creator.

  189. So the fundamental description of sin,

  190. in this part of Romans at least,

  191. is that we try and act like the creator

  192. and worship incorrectly.

  193. What is worshipping correctly?

  194. It's practising being the creature

  195. and not the creator,

  196. letting God be in his place

  197. and we in ours.

  198. So what are we going to do this morning

  199. when we go upstairs to worship?

  200. Well, the only thing you have to do

  201. is realise that you're practising

  202. in any element in the service,

  203. no matter what part of it we're up to,

  204. you're practising being the creature.

  205. You've just got to let go.

  206. You've got to let God be God

  207. and pray to him and sing to him

  208. and learn from him.

  209. I don't want to argue

  210. that church is an instrument

  211. to achieve or do something else.

  212. Church is a way of doing evangelism.

  213. Well, it might be on the side.

  214. Church is a way of growing in our minds.

  215. Well, yes, of course it is.

  216. But actually the most basic reason

  217. why we worship

  218. is to practise being creatures

  219. and dependent.

  220. My second point is related to that

  221. and then I'll break again

  222. and you can ask some questions.

  223. Is that church reflects the relationship

  224. between the one who calls

  225. and the ones who are called.

  226. So God calls us.

  227. That means we are the called ones

  228. and we turn up in response to his voice,

  229. in response to his initiative.

  230. And if you read the first chapter

  231. of 1 Corinthians,

  232. you'll see how often the language of call

  233. is used there to describe God

  234. or to describe us.

  235. It's an important point.

  236. Lots of people will assume

  237. that we turn up to church

  238. and then through our intense emotions

  239. or through our beautiful voices

  240. or through a structure of the service,

  241. God sees fit to come and join us.

  242. He's a bit resistant, right?

  243. Because it's Sunday morning after all.

  244. He was having a nice snooze

  245. but our loud praises somehow

  246. kind of wake him

  247. or our loud praises give him a throne

  248. to sit on.

  249. Now actually,

  250. the basic relationship in church

  251. is that God is here before we turn up.

  252. God calls us.

  253. You and I, brothers and sisters this morning,

  254. have heard his voice

  255. and we respond to his voice

  256. and arrive.

  257. He is the one who calls

  258. and we are the ones

  259. who respond.

  260. It's kind of the same point

  261. about creator and creature

  262. with slightly different language.

  263. He's the creator.

  264. We're the creatures.

  265. We learn dependence.

  266. He's the one who calls.

  267. We are the called ones.

  268. So we listen to his voice

  269. and trust his words.

  270. He is the creator

  271. and knows best after all.

  272. Now this is also

  273. pretty controversial

  274. in lots of circles

  275. because assumption

  276. in lots of places is

  277. that God will respond

  278. and come to be with us

  279. if our words,

  280. our emotions

  281. or our services

  282. have particular characteristics.

  283. It drives me crazy

  284. when people start the church service

  285. and say, you know,

  286. please Lord,

  287. be in our midst this morning.

  288. Please Lord,

  289. may you take your place

  290. on our praises.

  291. It just drives me crazy.

  292. He was there in the first place.

  293. He's the one who called us.

  294. We're only here

  295. because he was here first.

  296. That's the whole point

  297. of being a Christian, right?

  298. God's voice

  299. comes before our response

  300. to his voice.

  301. So it's good

  302. and it's lovely

  303. that here at Trinity

  304. we do this,

  305. that we begin the service

  306. calling on

  307. or recognising

  308. the name

  309. of Jesus Christ.

  310. For he's the one

  311. who draws us together

  312. as his body.

  313. It's not like we turn up

  314. and then God

  315. scratches his head

  316. and realises

  317. that he should have done

  318. something this morning

  319. as well.

  320. It was his initiative.

  321. It's his power.

  322. It's his voice.

  323. It's his love

  324. which draws us together

  325. in the first place.

  326. Now, next week

  327. I'll unpack this

  328. a little bit more

  329. because it makes

  330. a big difference

  331. to the elements

  332. of a church service

  333. and how we might

  334. approach

  335. or how we think

  336. about praying

  337. or how we think

  338. about singing

  339. or how we think

  340. about Bible reading.

  341. But both

  342. these points

  343. from Romans

  344. and from Corinthians

  345. are trying to suggest

  346. that

  347. the purpose

  348. of Sunday

  349. meeting

  350. is that we

  351. practice

  352. a God

  353. centred

  354. life.

  355. And if we can

  356. practice it for an hour

  357. on Sundays

  358. then perhaps

  359. some of

  360. the muscle memory

  361. that we've

  362. practiced on Sundays

  363. will carry over

  364. into Mondays

  365. and Tuesdays

  366. and Wednesdays

  367. as well.

  368. You can also say

  369. that we're practicing

  370. what we're going

  371. to be doing

  372. for eternity.

  373. Yes, that's right.

  374. That's right.

  375. There will be singing

  376. forever.

  377. Correct.

  378. Yep.

  379. And we'll be depending

  380. on God forever.

  381. Yeah, indeed.

  382. I'm taking a pause

  383. so that you can

  384. gather your thoughts

  385. and ask some questions

  386. or make some comments.

  387. What do you think

  388. like a right

  389. understanding

  390. of how we do

  391. church together

  392. with our body

  393. here in Trinity

  394. how does that

  395. help us

  396. in our mission

  397. as Christians

  398. on this earth?

  399. Like what are

  400. the practical

  401. implications

  402. of having this right?

  403. Like as we think

  404. about we come here

  405. and this is what

  406. we're doing

  407. like what are

  408. some of the benefits

  409. that we experience

  410. the body

  411. by getting this

  412. problem.

  413. I think about it.

  414. Yep, so

  415. and I'll unpack

  416. some of it

  417. in the next few

  418. weeks as well.

  419. Primarily

  420. the church

  421. is a gift.

  422. It's something

  423. God's giving to us.

  424. He's giving

  425. to us each other

  426. and if we

  427. don't regard

  428. each other

  429. in church

  430. as a gift

  431. then what we

  432. end up doing

  433. is making

  434. of church

  435. a burden

  436. or a challenge

  437. and I think

  438. that just

  439. impacts

  440. how we

  441. approach it

  442. how we

  443. invite others

  444. to come along

  445. what we

  446. imagine we're

  447. doing here

  448. what we think

  449. we should be

  450. achieving

  451. or not

  452. achieving

  453. so I think

  454. it has

  455. a whole range

  456. of spin-offs

  457. the next

  458. few

  459. picture words

  460. that I'm using

  461. are the church

  462. is a gym

  463. church

  464. is a dinner

  465. party

  466. and church

  467. is a

  468. classroom

  469. and church

  470. is a

  471. party

  472. and so

  473. I want

  474. to unpack

  475. using those

  476. metaphors

  477. more of

  478. the

  479. value

  480. what do we

  481. lose if we

  482. don't turn up

  483. is the other

  484. way of putting

  485. it

  486. so

  487. lots of

  488. people

  489. decide not to

  490. come to church

  491. because they

  492. could listen to

  493. a podcast

  494. and what

  495. they say

  496. is get more

  497. from the

  498. podcast

  499. and turning

  500. up a church

  501. or they

  502. could put

  503. on their

  504. Christian music

  505. on a CD

  506. or people

  507. don't use

  508. CDs anymore

  509. do they

  510. that just

  511. dated me

  512. on Spotify

  513. whatever

  514. and that's

  515. it has

  516. better production

  517. values than

  518. their local

  519. congregation

  520. and so on

  521. but I just

  522. think that's

  523. so wrong

  524. headed

  525. because

  526. it's assuming

  527. that it's

  528. about achieving

  529. a certain

  530. kind of

  531. standard

  532. rather than

  533. receiving

  534. a generous

  535. gift

  536. and

  537. that we're

  538. doing it

  539. together

  540. with others

  541. not by

  542. ourselves

  543. with our

  544. earpiece

  545. the temptation

  546. with podcasts

  547. for example

  548. is that you

  549. put in your

  550. earpiece

  551. or put on

  552. your headphones

  553. and it

  554. sounds like

  555. that celebrity

  556. preacher

  557. is whispering

  558. to you

  559. right

  560. you and

  561. he have

  562. this kind

  563. of really

  564. close

  565. relationship

  566. he's just

  567. talking to

  568. you

  569. and so

  570. you kind

  571. of feel

  572. special

  573. the problem

  574. is of course

  575. he's not

  576. and secondly

  577. you haven't

  578. understood

  579. his applications

  580. because you

  581. receive it as

  582. application for

  583. an individual

  584. rather than

  585. application for

  586. congregation

  587. so it's

  588. you kind

  589. of end up

  590. missing all

  591. the gifts

  592. that God

  593. wants to

  594. give

  595. yeah

  596. and with TV

  597. evangelism

  598. and with

  599. podcasts

  600. I believe

  601. that God

  602. turns out

  603. being the

  604. second banana

  605. and the

  606. pastor

  607. the speaker

  608. ends up

  609. being the

  610. first banana

  611. and takes

  612. away from

  613. God

  614. yeah

  615. yeah

  616. it certainly

  617. does take

  618. away from

  619. God

  620. and

  621. the hair

  622. or the

  623. charisma

  624. of the

  625. pastor

  626. you know

  627. I often

  628. think about

  629. celebrity

  630. pastors

  631. hair

  632. that's

  633. right

  634. Mesopotamia

  635. Mesopotamia

  636. yeah that's

  637. right

  638. it's very

  639. easy to be

  640. distracted by

  641. the immediate

  642. yeah

  643. one of my

  644. students said

  645. he wasn't

  646. reading the

  647. Bible in the

  648. morning for

  649. himself anymore

  650. he was just

  651. listening to

  652. podcasts

  653. and I said to

  654. him he'd

  655. become a

  656. medieval

  657. Christian

  658. where he

  659. now had a

  660. priest who

  661. was getting

  662. him to

  663. God

  664. rather than

  665. reading the

  666. Bible for

  667. himself

  668. right

  669. that's what

  670. he was doing

  671. he was effectively

  672. not turning up

  673. at church

  674. because he

  675. thought that

  676. he could get

  677. the good

  678. oil from

  679. the podcast

  680. but he was

  681. just missing

  682. the gifts

  683. that God

  684. wants to

  685. give

  686. he says in

  687. his word

  688. do not forsake

  689. the assembly

  690. of one

  691. another

  692. that's

  693. right there

  694. yeah

  695. yeah

  696. yes

  697. and he'd

  698. say he

  699. wasn't

  700. he was still

  701. turning up

  702. once or twice

  703. a month

  704. that is

  705. the assumption

  706. about weekly

  707. attendance

  708. has gone

  709. missing

  710. yes sir

  711. what gifts

  712. do we get

  713. by coming

  714. together

  715. to worship

  716. that we

  717. don't get

  718. you know

  719. I'm agreeing

  720. but can you

  721. be a little

  722. more particular

  723. like when we

  724. come together

  725. what gifts

  726. are we

  727. receiving

  728. that we

  729. don't

  730. when a

  731. great

  732. worship

  733. song

  734. comes on

  735. and we're

  736. just

  737. we turn

  738. and we're

  739. praising God

  740. by ourselves

  741. yeah

  742. it's maturity

  743. so I don't

  744. think you can

  745. be mature

  746. alone

  747. that is

  748. I think

  749. sermons

  750. are primarily

  751. I hope I don't

  752. get into trouble

  753. for this

  754. I think sermons

  755. are primarily

  756. to build a

  757. congregation

  758. of which

  759. you will

  760. benefit as

  761. an individual

  762. but I

  763. think corporate

  764. maturity

  765. is the

  766. primary

  767. goal

  768. of a church

  769. service for

  770. that matter

  771. for worship

  772. as we

  773. together

  774. learn to

  775. be the

  776. creatures

  777. before the

  778. creator

  779. but of course

  780. in our world

  781. we think

  782. individual

  783. maturity

  784. and therefore

  785. we say

  786. well I'm

  787. individually

  788. maturing

  789. by listening

  790. to my

  791. podcast

  792. but actually

  793. you're not

  794. corporately

  795. maturing

  796. you're not

  797. actually

  798. maturing

  799. as God

  800. wants you

  801. to mature

  802. which is

  803. to learn

  804. your place

  805. in the

  806. body

  807. in the

  808. fellowship

  809. right

  810. this is

  811. the thing

  812. when I

  813. give these

  814. talks

  815. or these

  816. seminars

  817. that one

  818. of the

  819. things that

  820. people react

  821. most strongly

  822. to is that

  823. church is for

  824. corporate maturity

  825. not for your

  826. personal maturity

  827. and that gets

  828. often lots of

  829. pushback

  830. yes brother

  831. yeah I

  832. agree

  833. yeah sure

  834. so that

  835. I do

  836. in the end

  837. benefit

  838. individually

  839. too

  840. but I

  841. can't say

  842. I'm not

  843. going to

  844. turn up

  845. at church

  846. because I'm

  847. not going

  848. to get

  849. anything

  850. out of

  851. it today

  852. you turn

  853. up at

  854. church

  855. because we're

  856. going to get

  857. something out

  858. of it

  859. today

  860. and so

  861. the danger

  862. of highlighting

  863. the individual

  864. maturity

  865. at the expense

  866. of the

  867. corporate

  868. maturity

  869. is that

  870. then you

  871. say the

  872. podcast is

  873. going to

  874. do me

  875. just fine

  876. could you

  877. touch on

  878. the historical

  879. worship

  880. aspect

  881. with

  882. Israel

  883. and the

  884. relationship

  885. to God

  886. versus now

  887. sure

  888. so

  889. one of

  890. the

  891. biggest

  892. lessons

  893. in

  894. Leviticus

  895. or in

  896. God's

  897. instructions

  898. for the

  899. temple

  900. and the

  901. sacrifices

  902. is that

  903. you have

  904. to do

  905. things on

  906. God's

  907. own

  908. terms

  909. he's

  910. the one

  911. who sets

  912. the rules

  913. for how

  914. you worship

  915. he's

  916. the one

  917. who's

  918. at the

  919. center

  920. of the

  921. holy

  922. of holies

  923. and you

  924. can only

  925. approach

  926. him

  927. recognizing

  928. the way

  929. he wants

  930. us

  931. to approach

  932. him

  933. so I

  934. think

  935. this

  936. point

  937. I could

  938. expand

  939. it

  940. is

  941. actually

  942. deeply

  943. embedded

  944. in the

  945. Old

  946. Testament

  947. storyline

  948. that we

  949. worship

  950. according to

  951. the rules

  952. that God

  953. has made

  954. for worship

  955. we can

  956. only

  957. approach

  958. him

  959. because

  960. he's

  961. first

  962. approached

  963. us

  964. we can

  965. only

  966. approach

  967. him

  968. on the

  969. terms

  970. that he's

  971. laid

  972. down

  973. and of

  974. course

  975. in

  976. the

  977. worship

  978. of

  979. Israel

  980. they

  981. held

  982. strongly

  983. to it

  984. being a

  985. corporate

  986. experience

  987. it was

  988. after all

  989. the whole

  990. nation

  991. of the

  992. Hebrews

  993. that God

  994. brought out

  995. of Egypt

  996. through

  997. the

  998. Passover

  999. sacrifice

  1000. on a

  1001. potentially

  1002. pastoral

  1003. application

  1004. level

  1005. how does

  1006. this

  1007. how would

  1008. you translate

  1009. this to

  1010. someone who

  1011. says

  1012. I'm battling

  1013. feeling just

  1014. really discouraged

  1015. and depressed

  1016. and church

  1017. just feels

  1018. overwhelming

  1019. to me

  1020. or my

  1021. boyfriend

  1022. broke up

  1023. with me

  1024. and I

  1025. just can't

  1026. get myself

  1027. out of

  1028. bed

  1029. or

  1030. my

  1031. feelings

  1032. were hurt

  1033. by someone

  1034. and I

  1035. don't want

  1036. to go

  1037. and deal

  1038. with them

  1039. how

  1040. might this

  1041. be a

  1042. helpful

  1043. thing

  1044. how would

  1045. you

  1046. communicate

  1047. this to

  1048. someone

  1049. who's

  1050. saying

  1051. it just

  1052. feels

  1053. really hard

  1054. to go

  1055. to corporate

  1056. worship

  1057. yes

  1058. so I

  1059. understand

  1060. that

  1061. there'll

  1062. be

  1063. seasons

  1064. in a

  1065. person's

  1066. life

  1067. where

  1068. corporate

  1069. worship

  1070. is very

  1071. challenging

  1072. either

  1073. they have

  1074. a kind

  1075. of a

  1076. social

  1077. phobia

  1078. that makes

  1079. being

  1080. in groups

  1081. hard

  1082. and so

  1083. on

  1084. but I'd

  1085. say this

  1086. at least

  1087. at some

  1088. level

  1089. meeting

  1090. with other

  1091. Christians

  1092. in those

  1093. seasons

  1094. is really

  1095. important

  1096. even if

  1097. it's not

  1098. in Sunday

  1099. worship

  1100. for a

  1101. small

  1102. time

  1103. but a

  1104. small

  1105. group

  1106. in the

  1107. week

  1108. or a

  1109. prayer

  1110. triplet

  1111. as a

  1112. minimum

  1113. but the

  1114. other thing

  1115. is of course

  1116. you could

  1117. say to the

  1118. person

  1119. why don't

  1120. you come

  1121. five minutes

  1122. late

  1123. and leave

  1124. five minutes

  1125. early

  1126. so that

  1127. you don't

  1128. have to

  1129. talk to

  1130. anyone

  1131. but that

  1132. you can

  1133. remind

  1134. yourself

  1135. with

  1136. the

  1137. practices

  1138. of the

  1139. service

  1140. what

  1141. God

  1142. wants

  1143. to give

  1144. and how

  1145. you've

  1146. been

  1147. blessed

  1148. what your

  1149. responsibilities

  1150. are

  1151. despite

  1152. this

  1153. season

  1154. of

  1155. depression

  1156. or

  1157. trial

  1158. one

  1159. lesson

  1160. that I've

  1161. learned

  1162. in my

  1163. Christian

  1164. walk

  1165. is that

  1166. you go

  1167. to church

  1168. especially

  1169. when you

  1170. don't

  1171. want to

  1172. go

  1173. I was

  1174. battling

  1175. addiction

  1176. for a

  1177. decade

  1178. and a

  1179. half

  1180. and I

  1181. want to

  1182. go to

  1183. church

  1184. only

  1185. when I

  1186. had

  1187. some

  1188. clean

  1189. time

  1190. under

  1191. my

  1192. belt

  1193. and it

  1194. was like

  1195. get your

  1196. act

  1197. together

  1198. and then

  1199. you can

  1200. be in

  1201. God's

  1202. presence

  1203. and I

  1204. was at

  1205. Redeemer

  1206. then

  1207. under

  1208. Keller

  1209. and I

  1210. just

  1211. couldn't

  1212. and I

  1213. just

  1214. believe

  1215. that

  1216. you go

  1217. to church

  1218. especially

  1219. when you

  1220. don't

  1221. want to

  1222. go

  1223. go

  1224. when you

  1225. want to

  1226. go

  1227. but especially

  1228. when you

  1229. don't

  1230. want to

  1231. go

  1232. and I

  1233. never

  1234. regretted

  1235. going to

  1236. church

  1237. especially

  1238. when I

  1239. didn't

  1240. want to

  1241. go

  1242. yes I

  1243. agree with

  1244. you brother

  1245. that's great

  1246. and it

  1247. happens to

  1248. me like

  1249. that where

  1250. I'm

  1251. thinking oh

  1252. my goodness

  1253. I'm feeling

  1254. overwhelmed by

  1255. this that or

  1256. the other

  1257. why don't I

  1258. kind of

  1259. cut myself

  1260. some slack

  1261. and not go

  1262. everything

  1263. no no that's

  1264. just ridiculous

  1265. that's exactly

  1266. right doesn't

  1267. doesn't actually

  1268. in the end

  1269. help you

  1270. doesn't actually

  1271. what I need

  1272. to do then

  1273. is to practice

  1274. being the

  1275. creature rather

  1276. than the

  1277. creator

  1278. and church

  1279. will help

  1280. me set

  1281. set my

  1282. compass right

  1283. again

  1284. yeah the

  1285. reason why

  1286. I've used

  1287. this picture

  1288. of the

  1289. compass is

  1290. that I

  1291. think when

  1292. you're on a

  1293. long walk

  1294. or a long

  1295. journey

  1296. then repeated

  1297. appeals to

  1298. the compass

  1299. is exactly

  1300. when you

  1301. need to

  1302. find your

  1303. bearings again

  1304. right if

  1305. you're going

  1306. two paces

  1307. a compass

  1308. isn't actually

  1309. of enormous

  1310. use but if

  1311. you know the

  1312. journey is long

  1313. and hard

  1314. with lots of

  1315. distractions

  1316. and lots of

  1317. ways that

  1318. you can be

  1319. set off track

  1320. then looking

  1321. at your compass

  1322. repeatedly to

  1323. work out are

  1324. you still tracking

  1325. north one

  1326. degree

  1327. here or

  1328. there after

  1329. a year two

  1330. years five

  1331. years ten

  1332. years can

  1333. make an

  1334. enormous

  1335. difference you

  1336. can be so

  1337. far away from

  1338. the Lord if

  1339. you've only been

  1340. the first day

  1341. one degree

  1342. off so I'm

  1343. trying to argue

  1344. that coming to

  1345. church

  1346. practicing being

  1347. the creature

  1348. rather than the

  1349. creator learning

  1350. again to be the

  1351. called one

  1352. responding to

  1353. God's call

  1354. is a way of

  1355. weakly

  1356. recalibrating

  1357. celebrating our

  1358. journey

  1359. weekly

  1360. setting

  1361. ourselves

  1362. due north

  1363. again

  1364. and I

  1365. think

  1366. we need to

  1367. do that

  1368. regularly

  1369. and I'd say

  1370. weekly

  1371. in Hebrews

  1372. 2 we're

  1373. reminded that

  1374. often people

  1375. stop being

  1376. Christians

  1377. because not

  1378. because they've

  1379. made a

  1380. moral

  1381. a bad

  1382. moral choice

  1383. but they

  1384. kind of just

  1385. drift

  1386. like the

  1387. boat that

  1388. is no

  1389. longer

  1390. tethered

  1391. to the

  1392. jetty

  1393. and without

  1394. realising it

  1395. you're very

  1396. quickly a

  1397. long way

  1398. away from

  1399. where you

  1400. want to be

  1401. given the

  1402. pull of the

  1403. sea and the

  1404. winds

  1405. yes please

  1406. brother

  1407. a couple

  1408. of times

  1409. you made

  1410. implicit

  1411. references to

  1412. how often

  1413. yes

  1414. one you

  1415. just made

  1416. and I'm

  1417. just wondering

  1418. if you're

  1419. going to do

  1420. any more

  1421. than what

  1422. you just

  1423. did

  1424. which is

  1425. I think

  1426. weekly

  1427. would be

  1428. good

  1429. and you

  1430. said something

  1431. yes

  1432. sure

  1433. yes and

  1434. I do

  1435. think

  1436. weekly

  1437. is best

  1438. that is

  1439. it might

  1440. be good

  1441. if we

  1442. went to

  1443. church

  1444. twice a

  1445. day

  1446. I think

  1447. it's not

  1448. going to

  1449. happen

  1450. anytime

  1451. soon

  1452. but

  1453. weekly

  1454. is a

  1455. pattern

  1456. that the

  1457. scriptures

  1458. give us

  1459. both in

  1460. terms of

  1461. Old Testament

  1462. worship

  1463. and New

  1464. Testament

  1465. worship

  1466. as well

  1467. for the

  1468. reason that

  1469. as that

  1470. final point

  1471. makes

  1472. we're

  1473. setting our

  1474. compass to

  1475. north

  1476. we're

  1477. recalibrating

  1478. our walk

  1479. weekly

  1480. churches

  1481. like a

  1482. compass

  1483. because

  1484. the

  1485. first

  1486. Christians

  1487. moved

  1488. their

  1489. worship

  1490. day

  1491. from

  1492. Saturday

  1493. to

  1494. Sunday

  1495. to

  1496. the

  1497. Lord's

  1498. day

  1499. to

  1500. the

  1501. first

  1502. day

  1503. of

  1504. the

  1505. new

  1506. week

  1507. rather

  1508. than

  1509. the

  1510. seventh

  1511. day

  1512. of

  1513. the

  1514. old

  1515. week

  1516. that

  1517. is

  1518. what

  1519. we're

  1520. doing

  1521. on

  1522. Sundays

  1523. is

  1524. recalibrating

  1525. our

  1526. journey

  1527. around

  1528. the

  1529. new

  1530. world

  1531. world

  1532. that

  1533. was

  1534. begun

  1535. with

  1536. the

  1537. resurrection

  1538. of

  1539. Jesus

  1540. Christ

  1541. and

  1542. consequently

  1543. it's not

  1544. to say

  1545. therefore

  1546. it's not

  1547. the only

  1548. argument I

  1549. give for

  1550. weekly

  1551. worship

  1552. but at

  1553. least

  1554. this

  1555. that

  1556. we are

  1557. being

  1558. reminded

  1559. every

  1560. Sunday

  1561. of

  1562. the

  1563. new

  1564. world

  1565. that

  1566. we've

  1567. begun

  1568. to

  1569. celebrate

  1570. on

  1571. the

  1572. Lord's

  1573. day

  1574. and I

  1575. need

  1576. that

  1577. I

  1578. need

  1579. that

  1580. reminder

  1581. and that

  1582. shaping

  1583. every

  1584. week

  1585. to

  1586. orient

  1587. my

  1588. heart

  1589. to

  1590. true

  1591. north

  1592. to

  1593. the

  1594. new

  1595. heavens

  1596. and

  1597. the

  1598. new

  1599. earth

  1600. when

  1601. I'll

  1602. meet

  1603. the

  1604. Lord

  1605. face

  1606. to

  1607. face

  1608. I'll

  1609. give

  1610. in

  1611. some

  1612. texts

  1613. there

  1614. which

  1615. point

  1616. out

  1617. the

  1618. novelty

  1619. of

  1620. the

  1621. Lord's

  1622. day

  1623. the

  1624. Sunday

  1625. as

  1626. the

  1627. day

  1628. for

  1629. Christians

  1630. meeting

  1631. but of

  1632. course

  1633. in

  1634. Hebrews

  1635. 4

  1636. 9

  1637. as

  1638. well

  1639. we're

  1640. reminded

  1641. that

  1642. what

  1643. we're

  1644. doing

  1645. on

  1646. Sundays

  1647. is

  1648. practicing

  1649. for

  1650. the

  1651. eternal

  1652. Sabbath

  1653. and

  1654. so

  1655. it's

  1656. not a

  1657. bad

  1658. way

  1659. of

  1660. honoring

  1661. Sundays

  1662. this

  1663. being

  1664. our

  1665. Sabbath

  1666. rest

  1667. as a

  1668. way of

  1669. practicing

  1670. the

  1671. Sabbath

  1672. rest

  1673. forever

  1674. I

  1675. work

  1676. hard

  1677. and I'm

  1678. a single

  1679. man

  1680. so I

  1681. work

  1682. kind

  1683. of

  1684. too

  1685. much

  1686. basically

  1687. but

  1688. a good

  1689. thing

  1690. about

  1691. a

  1692. Sabbath

  1693. rest

  1694. is

  1695. I'm

  1696. telling

  1697. myself

  1698. I'm

  1699. not

  1700. stronger

  1701. than

  1702. God

  1703. I

  1704. need

  1705. to

  1706. rest

  1707. as

  1708. well

  1709. if

  1710. God

  1711. did

  1712. and

  1713. Sundays

  1714. might

  1715. be a

  1716. good

  1717. day

  1718. to

  1719. do

  1720. it

  1721. menos

  1722. back

  1723. hey

  1724. any

  1725. other

  1726. thoughts

  1727. means

  1728. so

  1729. the

  1730. original

  1731. Sabbath

  1732. was

  1733. from

  1734. sunset

  1735. Friday

  1736. to

  1737. sunset

  1738. Saturday

  1739. correct

  1740. and that

  1741. transition

  1742. into

  1743. Sunday

  1744. do you

  1745. know

  1746. exactly

  1747. how that

  1748. took place

  1749. and why

  1750. it took

  1751. place

1752. Yes, so the earliest Christians wanted to recognise the resurrection of Christ

1753. and on the first day of the week, on the Sunday,

1754. and because of his resurrection and his resurrection power

1755. and the new power we have as God's New Testament people.

1756. So it was a model recognising the centrality of Jesus' resurrection.

1757. I thought I read something about a Catholic priest initiating it,

1758. inaugurating it on a Saturday, taking it away from the day, Friday,

1759. I mean on a Sunday, taking it away from Saturday, put it on a Sunday, so I didn't know.

1760. Yes, I say, no, it's a long time before there were Catholic priests.

1761. So in those texts I've given you there, even the writers of the New Testament

1762. recognised that now this day, this Sunday, this Lord's Day,

1763. is the day where it's appropriate for Christians to gather to worship their risen King.

1764. In the Western world, I assume it's typical in Australia as well,

1765. like we kind of have a rhythm now of five days of work and two days of weekend.

1766. In Australia we do two days of work and five days of work.

1767. Have you thought much about sort of the difference between maybe a biblical view of a week

1768. and a cultural view of a week?

  1769. Interesting.

1770. So you mean the biblical view being six and one rather than five and two?

1771. Well, and also, like, it just occurs to me,

1772. there are some people who feel very inconvenienced by going to church in the morning

1773. because it's right in the middle of their weekend.

  1774. Yeah, sure.

1775. And you just sort of described it as being,

1776. hey, this should be the beginning of our week.

1777. Yeah, and if, you know, like in some of our churches in Melbourne,

1778. people have a holiday house or a vacation house and they go away for the weekend

1779. and they don't get back.

1780. They think they're doing well to get to church once a month

1781. because they're down at the beach the other weekends, whatever it might be.

1782. I think the pattern of one and six or five and two has been the most successful in history.

1783. So in the French Revolution they tried to make the working week ten days.

1784. You work for nine and have the tenth off.

1785. That didn't last very long.

1786. And it's actually why when the French decided after their revolution to have a ten-day week,

1787. that's when the English turned up the volume on having a Sabbath rest

1788. because they wanted to be unlike the French, right?

1789. And so the importance of Sabbath in Victorian England

1790. became increasingly important to show that we're not the French.

1791. We have a very strict six-on-one rule here, right?

1792. Yeah, of course, and kids have sport, at least in Australia.

1793. Kids have sport on Sunday morning, Saturday morning, Sunday morning.

1794. So that means that it's more difficult.

1795. It might mean that we need to think more flexibly about service times.

1796. So I know that there are churches in Melbourne that have Sunday night services

1797. so that those folk who've been away for the weekend at their holiday house,

1798. their vacation house, can get to church on Sunday nights as part of their strategy.

1799. You think, well, being as a person who doesn't have a holiday house,

1800. I don't have much sympathy for them.

1801. If I did, I'm sure I'd like the arrangement.

1802. Our son used to go with us from age 11 to like 14 or 15

1803. to the RP in Cambridge, and he got baptized,

1804. and I'd go to Bible school and all that, and worship.

1805. He knew the language and really loved the Lord,

1806. and he's an oboe player, and he went to conservatory.

1807. First boarding school, then conservatory.

1808. Now he's in L.A., and he's auditioning all over the world for an oboe player.

1809. And early on in his career, it was oboe on Sunday.

1810. He's completely left to faith.

1811. And it's a heartbreaker, and we wish, you know, what do you do?

  1812. What do you say?

  1813. Yes, that's awful.

  1814. This is his career.

  1815. He's a world-class oboe player, but he doesn't know the Lord.

  1816. He's fallen away.

1817. Yes, so we, of course, wish that things had otherwise eventuated.

  1818. But I'd say this.

1819. We ought not to develop our theology and our practice around the exceptions.

1820. That is, there are going to be people who do work on Sundays,

1821. either in trades or in professions where they have to.

  1822. That's just their job.

1823. And you kind of go, okay.

1824. But let's not then say, therefore, Sunday isn't the right thing to do.

1825. Sunday, weekly worship isn't the right thing to do.

1826. We still want to say it is, right?

1827. We just recognise there are going to be exceptions.

1828. We can't make law around exceptions.

1829. You have to establish the principles and then help individual folk fit into that model,

1830. given their own life situation.

  1831. Yes, but...

1832. Do you have strong opinions, including communion, every time we get together,

1833. as some denominations do, or just periodically,

1834. or is there a biblical view of this that we can...

  1835. No, I don't know that there's a particular biblical view.

1836. And there's a lot of theology that you have to sort through first

1837. before you make the decision how often you have communion.

1838. I'm an Anglican, so I do it more often than less often.

1839. But that's just my tribe.

  1840. Good.

1841. Well, I think we'll call it quits there.

1842. I'll say a prayer for us, and then we can get ready for worship.

1843. Our dear Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we thank you so much for this morning,

1844. this opportunity to talk and to listen,

1845. to spur each other on to love and good deeds.

1846. Even now I ask that you'd help us in the next hour or so to worship,

1847. to practise being creatures before our Creator,

1848. to respond to your call,

1849. which comes before our obedience.

1850. And I pray that you'd help us to learn these things such that we might teach others.

1851. For we ask it in Christ's strong name.

  1852. Amen.

1853. If those of you in the back could take your chairs and just fill them around the tables,

1854. and if you're up in the front, if you want to stack the chairs over here,

1855. that would be great help.

  1856. Thank you.

  1857. Thank you.
