  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. Would you turn with me to Exodus chapter 13 this morning?

    Exodus 13 chapter mention

  3. That's page 55 in the Pew Bible.

  4. We're going to pick up our series in Exodus with Exodus chapter 13.

    Exodus 13 chapter mention

  5. Let's begin by reading verses 3 through 10 of chapter 13.

  6. I'll read these for us.

  7. Verses 3 through 10, chapter 13.

  8. Then Moses said to the people,

  9. Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt,

  10. out of the house of slavery.

  11. For by a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place.

  12. No leavened bread shall be eaten.

  13. Today, in the month of Abib, you are going out.

  14. And when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites,

  15. the Hittites, the Amorites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites,

  16. which he swore to your fathers to give you,

  17. a land flowing with milk and honey,

  18. you shall keep this service in this month.

  19. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread,

  20. and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the Lord.

  21. Unleavened bread shall be eaten for seven days.

  22. No leavened bread shall be seen with you,

  23. and no leaven shall be seen with you in all your territory.

  24. You shall tell your son on that day,

  25. it is because of what the Lord did for me

  26. when I came out of Egypt.

  27. And it shall be to you as a sign on your hand

  28. and as a memorial between your eyes

  29. that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth.

  30. For with a strong hand the Lord brought you out of Egypt.

  31. You shall therefore keep this statute

  32. at its appointed time from year to year.

  33. Well, I wonder if you would consider yourself

  34. a forgetful person.

  35. Of course, sometimes forgetfulness can be funny.

  36. Like the man who had a leaking pipe under his sink

  37. and put a bucket under there to start collecting the water.

  38. And then when the bucket started to get full,

  39. decided to empty out the bucket into the same sink.

  40. Like, don't.

  41. Sometimes forgetfulness can be a bit embarrassing,

  42. like when someone asks you the date of your anniversary

  43. and suddenly your mind goes completely blank.

  44. That's never happened to me.

  45. Not once.

  46. Promise.

  47. But other times forgetfulness can be a bit more serious,

  48. can't it?

  49. You forget that this is actually a one-way street

  50. and here I am driving the wrong way.

  51. Or you forget to turn off the stove

  52. after cooking breakfast.

  53. Or you forget about the big phone call with a client.

  54. Sometimes forgetfulness can be pretty serious,

  55. pretty costly.

  56. And there are times when even forgetfulness can be devastating.

  57. For example, when an aging parent or an aging spouse

  58. begins to slide into dementia,

  59. forgetting the faces of even their closest loved ones.

  60. Forgetfulness.

  61. Forgetfulness.

  62. Now, we might not realize it at first,

  63. but forgetfulness is actually one of the greatest dangers

  64. that we face spiritually.

  65. You know, for most of us,

  66. it won't be a massive theological heresy or false teaching

  67. that undermines our relationship with God and with one another.

  68. For most of us,

  69. it won't be some sort of big overt temptation to immorality

  70. that shipwrecks our faith.

  71. No, actually, the much more pervasive

  72. and greater and widespread danger is forgetfulness.

  73. We forget who we really are

  74. and we forget what God has done

  75. and we forget the story that we're really a part of.

  76. In our passage that we had read earlier in the service

  77. that Suzanne read for us from 2 Peter,

  78. did you catch why Peter said

  79. our growth in grace tends to break down

  80. as he lists all those qualities

  81. with which the life of Christ begins to work itself out within us?

  82. What is it that makes us ineffectual and unfruitful

  83. in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus?

  84. In verse 9 of that passage,

  85. Peter said,

  86. it's because you've forgotten.

  87. It's because you've forgotten

  88. and you need to remember.

  89. And that's what this section of Exodus

  90. that we just read is all about.

  91. It's about the vital importance of remembering.

  92. Remember this day,

  93. Moses says to the Israelites.

  94. Remember.

  95. And as we think about this passage this morning,

  96. Exodus 12 and 13,

  97. I want us to think about three things.

  98. What to remember,

  99. how to remember,

  100. and lastly,

  101. why to remember.

  102. Why it's so important that we remember.

  103. So why don't we think first about

  104. what we need to remember.

  105. Now,

  106. at this point,

  107. in the story of Exodus,

  108. the Israelites had just witnessed

  109. God perform perhaps the most significant

  110. redemptive event in the entire Old Testament.

  111. The tenth plague has just fallen

  112. on the Egyptian firstborn sons.

  113. The blood of the Passover lamb

  114. has kept the Israelites safe.

  115. Pharaoh's obstinance against the Lord

  116. has finally been broken.

  117. He releases the people from slavery

  118. and they have now left Egypt

  119. once and for all.

  120. At last,

  121. after 400 years of slavery,

  122. the people are free.

  123. God has saved them.

  124. He's redeemed them.

  125. He's liberated them.

  126. They're no longer slaves of Pharaoh.

  127. They belong to the Lord now

  128. and they are free.

  129. That's where we're at

  130. in the story of Exodus.

  131. And now,

  132. Moses says to the Israelites,

  133. as they're going out,

  134. remember this day.

  135. But here's the surprising thing

  136. about what happens in Exodus 12 and 13.

  137. This command to remember

  138. doesn't just come after their redemption.

  139. This command to remember

  140. becomes before their redemption as well.

  141. If you glance back at Exodus chapter 12,

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  142. God doesn't just tell Moses

  143. what's going to happen

  144. on the night of the last plague.

  145. And God doesn't just tell Moses

  146. how the Israelites

  147. are going to be kept safe

  148. from the plague

  149. through the sacrifice of a lamb.

  150. That's sort of the verse,

  151. that's the first sort of 13 verses

  152. of chapter 12.

  153. God even tells Moses

  154. how they're going to remember this event

  155. throughout their generations.

  156. Before the event of the Passover in Egypt

  157. even happens,

  158. before the redemption even occurs,

  159. God tells Moses,

  160. here's how you're going to remember this forever.

  161. And you see that in verses 14 through 20

  162. of chapter 12

  163. as he describes the feast of unleavened bread.

  164. And you see it again

  165. in verses 24 through 27 of chapter 12

  166. as he talks about the Passover,

  167. celebrating the Passover year

  168. after year after year.

  169. God doesn't just say,

  170. here's what I'm going to do to rescue you,

  171. but also,

  172. here's how I want you to remember it.

  173. Now that seems a little strange at first,

  174. doesn't it?

  175. God tells them to remember something

  176. and how to remember it

  177. before he even does it.

  178. You know,

  179. it's sort of like

  180. we're going on family vacation

  181. and we spend the whole time

  182. on the drive thinking,

  183. here's how you're going to remember

  184. this family vacation.

  185. I want you to take pictures.

  186. I want you to put together a slideshow.

  187. I want you to play it at every reunion.

  188. This is how we're going to remember

  189. this great,

  190. awesome vacation

  191. that we're about to take.

  192. That seems really strange.

  193. All my kids would be like,

  194. dad,

  195. knock it off.

  196. We're just trying to watch our iPads.

  197. But God does that.

  198. He says,

  199. this is how you're going to remember

  200. this thing that I'm going to do.

  201. But you know,

  202. as strange as that feels to us,

  203. the same thing would happen

  204. 1,500 years after the Exodus.

  205. During a small Passover celebration

  206. in the upper room in Jerusalem,

  207. that same thing would happen again.

  208. The Lord Jesus would say to his disciples,

  209. here's how I'm going to rescue

  210. the whole world.

  211. And here's how I want you to remember it.

  212. What was Jesus doing

  213. on that night with his disciples

  214. when he took the Passover elements

  215. in his hands

  216. and told them to eat and drink?

  217. You see, for hundreds of years,

  218. Israel had remembered again and again

  219. how God liberated them from slavery.

  220. Passover was the liberation,

  221. celebration of Israel,

  222. that they were God's freed people.

  223. Again and again,

  224. they remembered how God

  225. had liberated them from slavery

  226. and had saved them

  227. through the blood of a lamb.

  228. And now,

  229. Jesus was telling his disciples

  230. that it had all been about him.

  231. that he was the true lamb

  232. who would die,

  233. that his blood would set us free

  234. and set us free

  235. from the greatest slavery of all,

  236. our slavery to sin

  237. and death

  238. and judgment.

  239. And what that means is this.

  240. You see,

  241. before the cross

  242. and the resurrection of Jesus,

  243. Israel looked back

  244. to the Passover from Egypt

  245. and remember how God

  246. had set them free.

  247. But now,

  248. for us,

  249. living on this side

  250. of the cross

  251. and resurrection of Jesus,

  252. we look back

  253. to the even greater Passover

  254. and remember

  255. how God set us free

  256. from sin and death.

  257. So what then

  258. do we need to remember?

  259. What do we need to remember?

  260. If we understand

  261. Exodus 12 and 13

  262. in the sweep of the whole Bible,

  263. if we see it

  264. in light of the whole story,

  265. then we remember

  266. the Passover best

  267. by remembering

  268. the cross.

  269. How do we keep

  270. the Passover feast today?

  271. We look back

  272. to the cross.

  273. But here's also

  274. what we see.

  275. We remember the cross

  276. best

  277. when we remember it

  278. through the lens

  279. of the Passover.

  280. Now,

  281. what do I mean by that?

  282. Well,

  283. it's actually very easy

  284. to view the cross

  285. with the wrong lens.

  286. All historians agree

  287. that around 30 AD,

  288. a young Jewish teacher

  289. from Galilee named Jesus

  290. was crucified by the Romans

  291. outside of Jerusalem.

  292. Pretty uncontested event.

  293. But what lens do you use

  294. to see that event?

  295. Was he just a martyr

  296. dying for a good cause?

  297. Was he a political

  298. revolutionary

  299. meeting his demise?

  300. But how did Jesus himself

  301. see his impending death?

  302. What lens did he use?

  303. It was the Passover lens.

  304. That his death

  305. is what would allow

  306. the just judgment of God

  307. to pass over his people

  308. and keep them safe.

  309. and as a result,

  310. set them free

  311. from slavery.

  312. In Egypt,

  313. the lamb died

  314. so that the firstborn

  315. didn't have to.

  316. And at the cross,

  317. Jesus died the death

  318. we deserve

  319. so that we don't have to.

  320. And he rose again

  321. as Lord and King

  322. to grant freedom

  323. to everyone

  324. who trusts in him.

  325. This is what we remember

  326. when we remember

  327. the cross

  328. and in doing so,

  329. remember the great Passover.

  330. So,

  331. Moses tells Israel

  332. to remember

  333. this day

  334. and that call

  335. to remember

  336. goes straight

  337. through the Old Testament

  338. into the new

  339. culminating

  340. in Jesus' death

  341. and resurrection.

  342. salvation.

  343. So,

  344. today,

  345. throughout all of our lives,

  346. this is what

  347. we need

  348. to remember.

  349. But second,

  350. how are we meant

  351. to remember this?

  352. How do we go about

  353. doing it?

  354. And God gives Israel

  355. very specific instructions

  356. about how they're

  357. to remember the Passover.

  358. They're not just going

  359. to do it

  360. in any old way.

  361. You know,

  362. go out into a field

  363. and write a poem

  364. if you feel like it.

  365. No,

  366. that's not what God says.

  367. They're very specific

  368. instructions.

  369. For Old Testament Israel,

  370. they were supposed

  371. to remember

  372. God's rescue from Egypt

  373. with three interrelated things.

  374. First was the annual

  375. Passover celebration.

  376. Second was the Feast

  377. of Unleavened Bread.

  378. And third,

  379. the ongoing consecration

  380. of the firstborn.

  381. Now,

  382. the Passover

  383. and the Feast

  384. of Unleavened Bread

  385. always went together.

  386. On the 14th day

  387. of the first month

  388. of the year,

  389. all the Israelite homes

  390. would have a Passover meal

  391. and they would retell

  392. the story

  393. of how God

  394. redeemed them

  395. from slavery.

  396. Generation after generation

  397. after generation.

  398. And then,

  399. for seven days

  400. following that,

  401. they wouldn't eat anything

  402. with leaven in it.

  403. In fact,

  404. they would get rid

  405. of all the leaven

  406. in their homes

  407. and eat only

  408. unleavened bread.

  409. And in the passage

  410. we read

  411. to start our sermon,

  412. God says,

  413. I want you to get rid

  414. of all the leaven

  415. in your whole land.

  416. Get rid of all of it.

  417. And then,

  418. at the end of that week,

  419. they'd have a feast

  420. to the Lord.

  421. That's how they were

  422. supposed to remember

  423. the Passover.

  424. That's how they were

  425. supposed to remember

  426. the redemption.

  427. celebration.

  428. And in addition

  429. to that annual

  430. week-long celebration,

  431. the Israelites

  432. were also meant

  433. to consecrate

  434. to the Lord

  435. on an ongoing basis

  436. any firstborn male.

  437. Now,

  438. that's the rest

  439. of chapter 13,

  440. verses 11 through 16.

  441. We didn't read that

  442. to start,

  443. but you can just sort of

  444. scan your eyes

  445. down through there.

  446. The firstborn male animals,

  447. God says,

  448. I want you to sacrifice

  449. those to me.

  450. And the firstborn male

  451. children would be redeemed.

  452. That is,

  453. the parents would offer

  454. a set amount of money

  455. to the priest

  456. as a gift and offering

  457. on behalf of their

  458. firstborn sons.

  459. And one sort of minor

  460. exception to those

  461. general rules

  462. was that animals

  463. that weren't typically

  464. used for sacrifice,

  465. like donkeys,

  466. well,

  467. those could be redeemed

  468. as well.

  469. And the point

  470. of all those practices

  471. was so that the people

  472. could remember again

  473. and again

  474. what God had done,

  475. how he had spared

  476. their firstborn in Egypt

  477. and rescued them

  478. from slavery

  479. would have been

  480. a very powerful reminder

  481. if every time

  482. you had a firstborn male

  483. in your land,

  484. you were doing

  485. something related to God,

  486. whether it was bringing

  487. an offering

  488. to the priests

  489. or whether it was

  490. bringing a sacrifice

  491. to the Lord.

  492. But I want to make

  493. three observations

  494. about these Old Testament

  495. practices that apply

  496. to how we are meant

  497. to remember

  498. our redemption today.

  499. You know,

  500. obviously living this side

  501. of the cross

  502. and resurrection,

  503. we don't do

  504. those things anymore,

  505. but there are still

  506. some patterns there

  507. that are helpful for us.

  508. And the three observations

  509. are this,

  510. that these acts

  511. of remembrance

  512. are perpetual

  513. and they're tangible

  514. and they're verbal.

  515. Where do we see that?

  516. Well, first,

  517. this remembrance

  518. is meant to be perpetual.

  519. And you actually see

  520. that throughout, right?

  521. Every single year

  522. without fail,

  523. Israel was supposed

  524. to celebrate the Passover

  525. and the Feast of Unleavened Bread

  526. again and again

  527. and again and again.

  528. They repeated it over

  529. and over

  530. and over again.

  531. Now,

  532. we, of course,

  533. live in a very

  534. entertainment-saturated age,

  535. don't we?

  536. We don't like things

  537. being the same.

  538. We value variety

  539. and change.

  540. But when it comes

  541. to remembering

  542. our redemption,

  543. it's supposed

  544. to be perpetual.

  545. We're supposed

  546. to do it over

  547. and over

  548. and over again.

  549. And you see this

  550. in the New Testament

  551. when it comes

  552. to the Lord's Supper.

  553. The church

  554. didn't just do it annually

  555. like the Old Testament

  556. Passover.

  557. They did it regularly.

  558. In many cases,

  559. they probably did it

  560. weekly

  561. every single time

  562. they met.

  563. Now,

  564. as Protestants,

  565. we can be very wary

  566. of repetition,

  567. can't we?

  568. We are afraid

  569. that something

  570. will become rote

  571. and empty.

  572. Just an empty ritual,

  573. right?

  574. We're very cautious

  575. of that.

  576. And that certainly

  577. is a very real danger.

  578. But at the same time,

  579. repetition

  580. can also be

  581. a great friend.

  582. Think about it

  583. this way.

  584. If you're playing

  585. a role

  586. in a theater performance,

  587. in a play,

  588. you probably

  589. practice your lines

  590. again and again

  591. and again.

  592. And you repeat

  593. them to yourself

  594. over and over

  595. and over,

  596. in the shower,

  597. in your bedroom,

  598. to your little siblings

  599. until they get sick

  600. of it, right?

  601. You just rehearse it

  602. and you repeat it.

  603. And your theater company

  604. will probably run

  605. through rehearsal

  606. after rehearsal

  607. leading up

  608. to your opening night.

  609. Why?

  610. Why do you do

  611. so much repeating

  612. and repetition

  613. in rehearsal?

  614. Well, it's not just,

  615. actually.

  616. It's not just

  617. so you don't mess up

  618. your lines

  619. during the performance

  620. and get embarrassed.

  621. That's one reason why.

  622. But it's not just that.

  623. It's more than that.

  624. It's because

  625. all that repetition

  626. internalizes

  627. the material

  628. so that when

  629. the curtain

  630. lifts

  631. and you take

  632. the stage,

  633. you can actually

  634. perform your role

  635. with freedom

  636. so that you can

  637. actually be

  638. who you're meant

  639. to be

  640. in the story.

  641. The same is very true

  642. of musicians.

  643. Some of the best

  644. improvisational players

  645. have honed their playing

  646. through endless hours

  647. of repetition

  648. until the scales

  649. and the progressions

  650. have become

  651. just second nature.

  652. And all of that

  653. is true for us

  654. in the spiritual life,

  655. in our life with God.

  656. Our weekly worship together,

  657. our regular taking

  658. of the Lord's Supper,

  659. hearing the word of God

  660. read and preached,

  661. giving,

  662. singing,

  663. praying,

  664. all of these practices

  665. that we do week in

  666. and week out

  667. again and again

  668. and again.

  669. Even the overall

  670. order of our service

  671. is the same every week.

  672. Have you noticed that?

  673. Every single week

  674. we do the exact same thing.

  675. Don't tell anybody.

  676. It's the secret.

  677. We begin with

  678. adoration of God, right?

  679. You can see this

  680. in your bulletin.

  681. We try to give you

  682. a little hint.

  683. Here's what we're doing now.

  684. We're adoring God, right?

  685. We begin with

  686. adoration of God,

  687. acknowledging and praising

  688. Him as our Creator

  689. and His majesty.

  690. And then we confess

  691. our sins.

  692. We look to God

  693. as our Redeemer

  694. in His mercy.

  695. And then we move

  696. to a time of thanksgiving

  697. and prayer and offering,

  698. which are all right responses

  699. to God's majesty

  700. and His mercy.

  701. We want to thank Him

  702. and we want to pray to Him

  703. and cast our burdens on Him

  704. and we want to give

  705. to the work of the gospel.

  706. Have you noticed?

  707. I hope you've noticed

  708. that sort of threefold movement

  709. every week.

  710. Worshiping God the Father,

  711. the Son,

  712. and the Holy Spirit,

  713. the Father who made us,

  714. and the Son who redeems us,

  715. and the Spirit who empowers us.

  716. And then we go to God's word together,

  717. eager to hear His voice.

  718. Why do we do that

  719. every single week?

  720. Because we need to get it

  721. ingrained deep down

  722. in our hearts

  723. so that when the curtain lifts,

  724. so that when we

  725. take the stage

  726. out in the world

  727. as God's people,

  728. we can actually be

  729. the image bearers

  730. He means for us to be

  731. with freedom.

  732. So that we can actually

  733. play the part in the story

  734. we're meant to play

  735. as His people

  736. in the world.

  737. So that our hearts

  738. can be calibrated

  739. to God and His kingdom.

  740. So our remembrance

  741. has to be perpetual.

  742. It's got to have some rhythm

  743. and some repetition to it.

  744. But it's also meant

  745. to be tangible.

  746. The Passover

  747. and the Feast of Unleavened Bread

  748. involved all of your senses.

  749. You ate the Passover meal,

  750. those herbs

  751. and that bread

  752. and that leg of lamb.

  753. You ate it.

  754. And you could feel

  755. and smell

  756. and taste the unleavened bread

  757. for the whole week following.

  758. You know,

  759. from time to time

  760. I'll attend seminars

  761. on youth ministry

  762. and one thing

  763. that comes up a lot

  764. in those seminars

  765. is how to teach well.

  766. How do we teach

  767. so that teenagers

  768. will really grasp the faith?

  769. And the answer

  770. that is often given is

  771. engage the senses, right?

  772. Don't just engage the hearing,

  773. engage their sight,

  774. show them a picture

  775. or engage their sense of touch.

  776. Bring an object

  777. to sort of pass around.

  778. Apparently educational research

  779. so is that if you engage

  780. more than one

  781. of the five senses at a time,

  782. we absorb the material

  783. at a much deeper

  784. and lasting level.

  785. And isn't it wonderful

  786. that God knew

  787. all about that

  788. thousands of years ago

  789. having made us

  790. after all.

  791. In the Passover

  792. and in the fulfillment

  793. of the Passover

  794. and the Lord's Supper,

  795. God has us engaging

  796. with nearly all of our senses,

  797. doesn't he?

  798. you can touch it

  799. and you can smell it

  800. and you can see it

  801. and you can taste it.

  802. And in some churches,

  803. they even hold it up

  804. and they break it

  805. so you can even hear it.

  806. And all of that

  807. is so that we can grasp it

  808. at the deepest

  809. and most meaningful level.

  810. That tangible nature of it

  811. connects us to the story

  812. in a powerful way.

  813. I mean, think about it.

  814. If we lived in Old Testament Israel,

  815. eating unleavened bread

  816. for a whole week

  817. connected generations

  818. of Israelites

  819. back to that original

  820. Exodus generation.

  821. How?

  822. Why were they eating

  823. unleavened bread?

  824. Because God's rescue

  825. was so decisive

  826. and so immediate

  827. that they had to go right away

  828. and there was no time

  829. for the bread to leaven.

  830. They had to go.

  831. And every generation

  832. would take up unleavened bread

  833. and eat it

  834. as a way of saying,

  835. we're part of that people too.

  836. We have an organic connection.

  837. God freed me

  838. from slavery in Egypt.

  839. And in the same way,

  840. when we eat the bread

  841. and drink the cup

  842. and the Lord's Supper,

  843. it connects us to the story.

  844. This is what Jesus ate

  845. and drank with his disciples.

  846. This bread that represents

  847. his broken body

  848. and this cup

  849. that represents his shed blood.

  850. in a tangible way,

  851. it's putting us

  852. into that same

  853. unbroken story,

  854. into that same

  855. unbroken people.

  856. But finally,

  857. remembrance is meant

  858. to not just be perpetual

  859. and tangible,

  860. it's got to be verbal.

  861. Look at Exodus chapter 12

    Exodus 12:26

  862. verses 26 and 27.

  863. It should just be

  864. on the opposite page

  865. from where we started.

  866. Exodus 12,

  867. 26 and 27.

  868. This is Moses

  869. giving instructions

  870. to the Israelites

  871. before the Passover event.

  872. He says,

  873. You see a similar thing

  874. in chapter 13,

  875. verse 14.

  876. Jump across

  877. to the next chapter.

  878. Verse 14 of chapter 13.

  879. And when in time to come,

  880. your son asks you,

  881. what does this mean?

  882. Meaning the consecration

  883. of the firstborn.

  884. You shall say to him,

  885. by a strong hand,

  886. the Lord brought us

  887. out of Egypt

  888. from the house

  889. of slavery.

  890. Yes,

  891. the remembrance

  892. needs to be tangible,

  893. but it can't just

  894. be tangible,

  895. friends.

  896. There need to be words.

  897. It has to be explained.

  898. Did you notice the pattern?

  899. Your children will ask,

  900. what does this mean?

  901. And God says,

  902. and then you will say.

  903. In other words,

  904. when we remember

  905. our redemption,

  906. we've got to tell

  907. the story with words.

  908. The tangible practices

  909. are an integral part,

  910. but they don't stand alone.

  911. That's why

  912. the reading

  913. and the teaching

  914. and the preaching

  915. of God's word

  916. has to be central

  917. in all that we do.

  918. Without the clear

  919. teaching of the Bible,

  920. without the consistent

  921. preaching of the gospel story,

  922. these tangible practices,

  923. whatever they are,

  924. they lose their meaning

  925. and they become empty.

  926. But,

  927. when joined

  928. with the teaching

  929. of the word,

  930. they become

  931. very powerful ways

  932. for us to remember

  933. our redemption.

  934. And, of course,

  935. isn't it true

  936. that the nature

  937. of our redemption,

  938. it has to be spoken,

  939. right?

  940. Why?

  941. Because

  942. our redemption

  943. was accomplished

  944. in a once-for-all

  945. historical event.

  946. You see,

  947. when Israel

  948. was celebrating

  949. the Passover

  950. year after year

  951. after year

  952. after year,

  953. they weren't actually

  954. redoing the Passover,

  955. right?

  956. The Passover

  957. happened once.

  958. God rescued them

  959. once and for all

  960. from slavery in Egypt.

  961. And when something

  962. happens once and for all,

  963. how can you reconnect

  964. with it?

  965. You talk about it.

  966. It's the same thing

  967. that's true

  968. of the cross.

  969. God has rescued us

  970. from sin and death

  971. once and for all

  972. through the perfectly

  973. sufficient sacrifice

  974. of Christ.

  975. And now,

  976. what do we do?

  977. We speak about it

  978. and we remember it.

  979. So these are the ways

  980. that we remember.

  981. This is how

  982. we're meant to remember.

  983. But last,

  984. why?

  985. Why do we need

  986. to remember

  987. our redemption?

  988. Why go through

  989. all the trouble

  990. of this perpetual,

  991. tangible,

  992. verbal remembrance?

  993. What is at stake

  994. in all of this?

  995. Well,

  996. these chapters of Exodus

  997. point us in three

  998. sort of related directions.

  999. reasons.

  1000. The first reason why

  1001. is for your children.

  1002. Remember your redemption

1003. for the sake of your children.

  1004. We already saw that

  1005. in chapter 12,

  1006. verse 26,

  1007. and 13, 14,

  1008. how the next generations

1009. are very much in view

  1010. as these practices

  1011. are put into place.

1012. But we see it again

  1013. in 13, 8.

  1014. Look at 13, 8.

  1015. During the Feast

  1016. of Unleavened Bread,

  1017. Moses says,

1018. you shall tell your son

  1019. on that day,

  1020. it is because of

1021. what the Lord did for me

1022. when I came out of Egypt.

  1023. You see, friends,

  1024. being born

  1025. into a certain family

  1026. doesn't make you

  1027. a Christian.

  1028. Just because I'm

  1029. a follower of Jesus

1030. doesn't mean that my kids

  1031. automatically are.

1032. They need to be shown

  1033. and told about

  1034. God's great work

  1035. of redemption in Christ

1036. so that they can trust it

  1037. for themselves

  1038. through faith.

  1039. Here in Exodus,

  1040. Moses envisions

  1041. children watching,

  1042. taking it all in,

  1043. participating,

  1044. and then asking

  1045. their parents

  1046. what it's all about.

  1047. And you know,

  1048. that dynamic

  1049. hasn't really changed

  1050. for us today.

  1051. When we celebrate baptism,

  1052. the kids are here

  1053. watching, right?

  1054. And when they ask,

  1055. Dad, Mom,

  1056. what does that mean?

  1057. Why are those people

  1058. getting all wet?

  1059. That's weird.

1060. then you can tell them

  1061. it's because of what

  1062. God did for us

  1063. through Jesus.

  1064. He went down

  1065. into death.

  1066. He rose again

  1067. to life for us

1068. to wash our sins away.

1069. And that can be true

  1070. of you too

  1071. if you take hold

  1072. of them by faith.

1073. And the same is true

1074. when we do the Lord's Supper,

  1075. isn't it?

  1076. Parents,

  1077. when you're fourth

  1078. and fifth

  1079. and sixth graders

  1080. or when you're teenagers

  1081. ask you,

1082. what is this all about?

1083. As we do the Lord's Supper

  1084. every other week,

  1085. you can then have

  1086. a conversation

  1087. about who Jesus is

  1088. and what he's done.

1089. When with a mighty hand,

1090. God dealt once and for all

  1091. for our sins.

  1092. You see,

  1093. every other week

1094. when we do the Lord's Supper,

  1095. we have an opportunity

  1096. to have spiritually

  1097. significant conversations

  1098. with our kids

  1099. because they've seen something

  1100. and something's gone

  1101. right before their eyes

  1102. that speaks

1103. of the gospel of Christ.

1104. And even if they don't

  1105. initiate with you,

1106. some of you are thinking,

1107. my teenagers would never say,

  1108. Dad,

  1109. what does this mean?

  1110. Right?

  1111. No.

1112. But even if they don't

  1113. initiate with you,

1114. the practice of the Lord's Supper

  1115. gives you a chance

  1116. to engage with them.

  1117. Doesn't it?

  1118. Hey,

  1119. I noticed you're not

  1120. taking the Lord's Supper.

  1121. How come?

  1122. Or,

  1123. hey,

  1124. I noticed you took

1125. the Lord's Supper this morning.

  1126. Let's talk about that.

1127. And let me just say,

  1128. if you yourself

  1129. are a middle schooler

  1130. or a high schooler

  1131. or in grade school,

1132. let me say to you

  1133. that the Lord's Supper

1134. isn't just an empty ritual,

  1135. but it's a powerful reminder

1136. of what Jesus has done.

  1137. The most important thing

1138. that you can ask this morning,

  1139. if you're here

  1140. with your parents,

  1141. is not,

1142. how can I make my parents happy?

1143. How can I get through this

  1144. as quickly as possible

1145. and get back to playing

  1146. video games this afternoon?

  1147. No.

  1148. The most important thing

  1149. you can ask yourself

  1150. this morning is,

  1151. where do I stand

  1152. with Jesus?

  1153. Do I believe

1154. that He's the Son of God?

  1155. Do I believe

1156. that He died for my sins

  1157. and rose again

1158. as the Lord of the universe?

  1159. And have I surrendered

  1160. my life to Him?

  1161. Can you answer yes

  1162. to those questions?

  1163. If not,

  1164. what's holding you back?

  1165. Talk to someone older

  1166. that you trust.

  1167. The reality is,

1168. you don't need to hide

  1169. your doubts and fears

  1170. about Christianity.

  1171. We've all been there.

  1172. And the spiritual life

  1173. is not something

1174. that you can do alone.

1175. Talk to someone about it.

1176. But if you can answer yes

  1177. to those questions,

1178. then who have you told?

  1179. If you are saying,

  1180. yes,

1181. I believe He's the Son of God.

1182. I believe He died for my sins.

  1183. Yes,

1184. I've surrendered my life to Him.

  1185. Then tell someone.

  1186. Tell your parents.

  1187. And then tell someone

  1188. here at the church.

  1189. Talk to me

  1190. or talk to one

  1191. of the other pastors.

  1192. Make a public profession

1193. of your faith in Jesus.

1194. And if you haven't been baptized,

  1195. that's your next step.

  1196. Step into the waters

1197. and make a public profession

1198. of your union with Christ.

  1199. You see,

  1200. friends,

  1201. what Christ has done,

  1202. He's done for you.

  1203. Middle schoolers,

  1204. high schoolers,

  1205. this is for you.

1206. And one of the main reasons

1207. God gave us the command

  1208. to remember our redemption

1209. again and again and again

  1210. is so that you

1211. would come to know Him too.

  1212. But this isn't just

  1213. for our children's sake.

1214. It's also for our own sake.

1215. Look at the next verse

  1216. in chapter 13.

  1217. Verse 9.

  1218. Verse 9 says,

  1219. And,

1220. you're not just going to tell

  1221. your kids about it,

  1222. and,

1223. it shall be to you

1224. as a sign on your hand

  1225. and as a memorial

  1226. between your eyes

1227. that the law of the Lord

1228. may be in your mouth.

1229. For with a strong hand,

1230. the Lord has brought you

  1231. out of Egypt.

  1232. I heard a statistic recently

  1233. that Americans watch

1234. an average of five hours

  1235. of TV a day.

  1236. A day!

  1237. Holy smokes!

1238. Think about all the advertising

  1239. and all the narratives

  1240. and pictures

  1241. of what it means

  1242. to be human

1243. and how to find happiness

  1244. that we're absorbing

  1245. through our media consumption.

  1246. You know,

1247. as I heard that statistic,

  1248. I thought,

  1249. where do people find

  1250. five hours a day

  1251. to watch TV?

1252. But then I started thinking

1253. about all the other ways

1254. in which I consume media

  1255. during the day.

  1256. And I thought,

  1257. okay,

  1258. maybe not five hours,

  1259. but

  1260. maybe a couple,

  1261. maybe a few,

  1262. if I count up

  1263. all the podcasts

  1264. and all the

  1265. flipping through

  1266. whatever I'm looking at

  1267. on my phone,

  1268. you know,

  1269. Facebook,

  1270. news feeds,

1271. blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

  1272. Right?

1273. And all of that stuff,

  1274. almost everything

  1275. that we come across

  1276. as humans

  1277. is in some big

  1278. or small way

  1279. telling a story

  1280. about where real life

  1281. and meaning

  1282. is to be found.

  1283. I read a book recently

  1284. called

1285. You Are What You Love

  1286. by a professor

  1287. out at Calvin College

  1288. named James Smith.

  1289. And in that book,

  1290. he spends some time

  1291. meditating

  1292. on the sort of

  1293. typical practice

1294. of going to the shopping mall.

1295. And as he sort of

  1296. starts to think about

  1297. what we do

1298. when we go to the mall,

  1299. you start to see

  1300. that even something

  1301. as mundane

1302. as going to the mall

  1303. has this pervasive power

  1304. to shape our desires

  1305. and to saturate us

  1306. in a narrative

  1307. about where real life

  1308. and real joy

  1309. is to be found.

  1310. Think about it.

  1311. You enter the mall

1312. and it's sort of enclosed

  1313. and it's its own

  1314. set apart space

  1315. in the world, right?

  1316. You're going

1317. to a different space now.

  1318. You're leaving

  1319. the real world

  1320. and you're stepping

  1321. into this sort of

  1322. trans-historical

  1323. timeless space

  1324. where there's never a clock

  1325. and there's always

1326. sort of nice music playing.

  1327. You've been transported

  1328. to a different realm

  1329. and there's a picture

  1330. of beauty

  1331. and health

  1332. and attraction

  1333. and joy

  1334. lining the walls

1335. at every step of the way.

  1336. There's a little place

  1337. where you can go

  1338. with the promise

1339. that if you turn in here

1340. and you just give us

  1341. a little money,

  1342. we will give you

  1343. an object

  1344. that will allow you

  1345. to experience

  1346. and participate

  1347. in that joy

  1348. and beauty

  1349. and you'll be able

  1350. to win friends

  1351. and influence people

1352. and you will be loved.

  1353. And then,

  1354. when the experience

1355. fades after a few weeks,

  1356. when the jeans

  1357. just don't feel

  1358. as cool anymore

  1359. or that sweet

  1360. leather purse

  1361. just doesn't quite

  1362. fit

  1363. what you're about

  1364. that week

  1365. or whatever,

  1366. you know,

  1367. those killer Jordans

  1368. you got,

1369. get a scuff on them.

  1370. When the experience

1371. fades after a few weeks,

  1372. when the purchase

  1373. starts to lose

  1374. its luster,

  1375. well,

1376. you can always come back

  1377. and find something new.

1378. Enter all ye who weary

  1379. and are heavy laden

1380. and we will give you stuff.

  1381. Right?

  1382. See,

  1383. the reality is,

  1384. friends,

  1385. that we are inundated

  1386. by counter narratives

  1387. all the time,

1388. not just in the shopping mall,

  1389. but everywhere.

  1390. Everything's telling a story

  1391. about what's real

  1392. and true

  1393. and good

  1394. and beautiful

  1395. and how our hearts

  1396. ought to be aligned

1397. and all of these stories

  1398. that saturate our world,

  1399. they cause us

  1400. to forget.

  1401. They cause us

  1402. to forget

  1403. who we really are

1404. and who God truly is

  1405. and the simply

  1406. astounding thing

1407. that he's done for us.

1408. Why did God tell Israel

  1409. to remember their redemption

  1410. year after year

  1411. after year after year?

  1412. Because he knew

1413. that even in the promised land

1414. they were going to be

  1415. surrounded by false gods

  1416. and false promises

  1417. of happiness

  1418. and if they forgot

  1419. that the Lord

  1420. had redeemed them,

  1421. they would run

  1422. to those other gods

  1423. for security

  1424. and protection

  1425. and life

  1426. and safety

1427. and they would end up

  1428. in spiritual slavery

  1429. once again.

  1430. And friends,

1431. our life is no different.

  1432. when I forget

  1433. that I've been liberated

1434. by the work of Christ

1435. and made a child of God,

  1436. an heir of God

  1437. and a co-heir with Christ

1438. to share with his suffering

1439. so that I might share

  1440. in his glory

  1441. of the new creation,

  1442. when I forget that

1443. and when you forget that,

  1444. then suddenly

  1445. you find yourself

  1446. going to all sorts

  1447. of other things

  1448. for security

  1449. or for joy

  1450. or for peace.

  1451. like the approval

  1452. of other people

  1453. for example.

  1454. And when you go

  1455. to those other things

  1456. like approval,

1457. you end up a slave.

1458. You end up a slave

1459. to what other people think

1460. or don't think of you

  1461. and people's criticism

  1462. crushes you

  1463. or their praise

  1464. elates you

  1465. and you end up

  1466. blown and tossed

1467. and then you end up

  1468. doing things

  1469. and saying things

  1470. that you know

  1471. you shouldn't

  1472. because the approval

  1473. of others

  1474. is really

  1475. what your heart

  1476. is resting in.

  1477. And yet at root,

  1478. what's happened?

  1479. We've forgotten

  1480. who we are.

  1481. We've forgotten

  1482. who God is.

  1483. We need to remember

  1484. that we've been

  1485. bought with a price

  1486. and that God alone

  1487. is worthy

  1488. of our heart's desire

  1489. and that we're

  1490. his beloved children

  1491. because of Jesus.

  1492. verse 9 here

  1493. says that remembering

  1494. our redemption

  1495. will function

  1496. like a compass,

  1497. reorienting our lives

  1498. and our identity

  1499. to true north

  1500. as a sign

  1501. on your hand

  1502. and as a memorial

  1503. between your eyes.

  1504. Not just individually

  1505. but corporately too.

  1506. And out of that

  1507. reorientation

  1508. again and again

  1509. to God

  1510. and God's redemption,

  1511. then genuine obedience

  1512. and service

  1513. to the Lord flow.

  1514. Look how the rest

  1515. of that verse runs.

  1516. That the law

  1517. of the Lord

1518. may be in your mouth.

  1519. As we reorient

  1520. back to God

  1521. and his redemption,

  1522. then our lives

  1523. begin to flow

1524. and we begin to live

  1525. the way we're meant

  1526. to live

  1527. as his image bearers.

  1528. Not just individually

  1529. but corporately.

1530. Why do so many churches

  1531. lose their way?

1532. Why do so many churches

  1533. become intoxicated

  1534. by the promise

  1535. of political power?

  1536. Why do churches

  1537. become rife

  1538. with conflict

  1539. and bitterness?

  1540. Why do churches

  1541. become proud

  1542. and look down

  1543. their noses

  1544. at other churches

  1545. who are less big

  1546. or less hip

  1547. or less doctrinally precise?

  1548. At the root

  1549. of it all,

  1550. brothers and sisters,

  1551. is because we fail

  1552. to remember

  1553. our redemption.

  1554. We forget

  1555. and other things

  1556. steal our hearts

  1557. and captivate us

  1558. and make us captives.

  1559. We fail

  1560. to keep God's

  1561. gracious work

  1562. in Christ

  1563. as the constant center

  1564. of our

  1565. congregational message

  1566. and our corporate life.

  1567. And if we think

  1568. that we're immune

  1569. to these kinds

  1570. of dangers

  1571. at Trinity,

1572. we need to think again.

  1573. We, too,

  1574. are always in danger

  1575. of letting

  1576. some other narrative

  1577. shape our life

  1578. and our identity

  1579. as a church.

1580. And so we must remember

  1581. again

  1582. and again

  1583. and again

  1584. the redeeming work

  1585. of Christ

  1586. like a sign

  1587. on our hands

  1588. and like a memorial

  1589. between our eyes.

  1590. It has to be

  1591. the thing

  1592. that colors

  1593. everything we do.

  1594. The inescapable

  1595. mark on all

  1596. of our words

1597. and all of our pursuits

1598. and all of our programs.

  1599. And that leads us

  1600. to the last reason

  1601. why.

  1602. Why do we need

  1603. to remember

  1604. our redemption?

  1605. It's not just

  1606. for our children's sake.

  1607. It's not just

  1608. for our own sake.

  1609. But friends,

  1610. it's for the world's sake.

  1611. At the end

  1612. of chapter 12

  1613. verses 43

  1614. through 49

  1615. the Lord

  1616. gives Moses

  1617. instructions

  1618. about who can

  1619. and who can't

  1620. eat the Passover

  1621. when they celebrate it

  1622. in the promised land.

  1623. And God,

  1624. it's very clear

  1625. that non-Israelites

  1626. are not allowed

  1627. to eat it.

1628. Just as the New Testament

  1629. is clear

  1630. that the Lord's Supper

  1631. is only for believers

  1632. in Christ.

  1633. However,

  1634. in verse 48

  1635. we read this.

  1636. If a stranger

  1637. shall sojourn

  1638. with you

  1639. and would keep

  1640. the Passover

  1641. to the Lord

  1642. let all his males

  1643. be circumcised

  1644. then he may come

  1645. near and keep it.

  1646. He shall be

  1647. as a native

  1648. of the land.

  1649. Do you see

  1650. what this verse

  1651. is envisioning?

  1652. The people of Israel

  1653. celebrating the Passover

  1654. in the promised land

  1655. and outsiders

  1656. who have come

  1657. to dwell

  1658. in the promised land.

  1659. They see

  1660. the common life

  1661. of Israel

  1662. and they hear

  1663. the story

  1664. of the Exodus

  1665. and they see

  1666. the Passover celebration

  1667. and they want

1668. to be a part of it.

  1669. And then

  1670. they actually

  1671. come in.

  1672. God says

  1673. they can get

  1674. circumcised

  1675. and they can become

  1676. a part

  1677. of the people

  1678. and God says

  1679. they shall be

  1680. as natives

  1681. of the land.

  1682. In other words,

  1683. the outsiders

  1684. will become insiders

  1685. and the strangers

  1686. and the foreigners

  1687. will become natives

  1688. and the homeless

  1689. will find a home.

  1690. God's mission

  1691. for Israel

  1692. wasn't just

1693. to be a holy club

  1694. that excluded

  1695. everyone else.

  1696. Their mission

1697. was to be a light

  1698. to the nations

1699. and though they fell short

  1700. time and time again,

1701. God still didn't give up

  1702. on his people

  1703. or his mission

  1704. for his people

  1705. because now that Jesus

  1706. has come

  1707. and poured out

  1708. the Holy Spirit,

  1709. that mission continues

  1710. through the church today.

  1711. We need to keep

  1712. remembering God's redemption.

  1713. We need to keep

  1714. holding it up

  1715. perpetually,

  1716. tangibly,

  1717. verbally,

  1718. verbally

  1719. because God

  1720. has many

  1721. people

  1722. in this city

  1723. who are his people.

  1724. And though they may

  1725. seem strangers now,

  1726. God's plan is to

  1727. call them

  1728. and bring them

  1729. to his self.

  1730. for the sake

  1731. of the world,

  1732. we need to remember

  1733. because God says

  1734. there's a place

  1735. at my table,

  1736. in my family,

  1737. in my home

  1738. for everyone

  1739. who believes.

  1740. Friends,

  1741. the reality is

  1742. we are

  1743. a forgetful

  1744. people.

  1745. Left to our

  1746. own devices,

  1747. we would forget

  1748. and we would

  1749. drift

  1750. and we would

  1751. allow the cares

  1752. and concerns

  1753. of life

  1754. and all those

  1755. competing narratives

  1756. to choke out

  1757. the growth

  1758. of the gospel

  1759. in our lives

  1760. and to choke out

  1761. the growth

  1762. of the gospel

  1763. in our church.

  1764. But here's

  1765. the good news.

  1766. God,

  1767. in his grace,

  1768. not only

  1769. tells us

  1770. to remember,

  1771. but he gives us

  1772. the very means

  1773. by which

  1774. we can remember.

  1775. So as we have

  1776. now heard

  1777. God's word,

  1778. we're going to

  1779. go to the table

  1780. this morning

  1781. and having heard

  1782. and considered

  1783. God's word,

  1784. we're going to

  1785. do just that.

  1786. We're going to

  1787. grab hold

  1788. of these means

  1789. of remembrance

  1790. and we're going to

  1791. pray that God

  1792. uses them

  1793. to orient

  1794. ourselves

  1795. back to God

  1796. and God's

  1797. great salvation,

  1798. not just

  1799. for our own sake

  1800. and for our

  1801. children's sake,

  1802. but what we do

  1803. here is for

  1804. the world's sake.

  1805. God's sake.

  1806. Let's pray.

  1807. Lord,

  1808. thank you

  1809. for all

  1810. the many

  1811. and varied

  1812. ways that you

  1813. have given us

  1814. to remember

  1815. our redemption.

  1816. Lord,

  1817. thank you

  1818. for the reminder

  1819. that we need

  1820. to keep it

  1821. in front

  1822. of our faces

  1823. at all times.

  1824. Lord,

  1825. thank you

  1826. for the table

  1827. where you

  1828. promise to meet

  1829. with us

  1830. in a special

  1831. way and feed

  1832. our faith

  1833. and realign us

  1834. to you

  1835. and to your

  1836. kingdom.

  1837. We thank you

  1838. for all this

  1839. in Jesus' name.

  1840. Amen.
