  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. We are celebrating baptism this morning, as you've noticed from the giant tank up here,

  3. right?

  4. And we are looking at a passage from Exodus this morning that is about celebration, so

  5. it's very fitting.

  6. Would you turn with me to Exodus chapter 15, verses 1 through 21?

    Exodus 15:1–21

  7. Exodus 15.

  8. That's page 57 in the Pew Bible, if you want to turn there.

  9. It'll be helpful to have it open before you as we look at what this passage speaks to us

  10. today.

  11. Exodus chapter 15, page 57, if you're looking in the Pew Bible.

    Exodus 15 chapter mention

  12. Let me read this for us.

  13. Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying,

  14. I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously.

  15. The horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.

  16. The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.

  17. This is my God, and I will praise him.

  18. My father's God, and I will exalt in him.

  19. The Lord is a man of war.

  20. The Lord is his name.

  21. Pharaoh's chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk

  22. in the Red Sea.

  23. The floods covered them.

  24. They went down into the depths like a stone.

  25. Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power.

  26. Your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy.

  27. In the greatness of your majesty, you overthrow your adversaries.

  28. You send out your fury.

  29. It consumes them like stubble.

  30. At the blast of your nostrils, the waters piled up.

  31. The floods stood up in a heap.

  32. The deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.

  33. The enemy said, I will pursue.

  34. I will overtake.

  35. I will divide the spoil.

  36. My desire shall have its fill of them.

  37. I will draw my sword.

  38. My hand shall destroy them.

  39. You blew with your wind.

  40. The sea covered them.

  41. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.

  42. Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?

  43. Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?

  44. You stretched out your right hand.

  45. The earth swallowed them.

  46. You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed.

  47. You have guided them by your strength, your holy abode.

  48. The peoples have heard.

  49. They tremble.

  50. Pangs have seized the inhabitants of Philistia.

  51. Now are the chiefs of Edom dismayed.

  52. The trembling seizes the leaders of Moab.

  53. All the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.

  54. Terror and dread fall upon them because of the greatness of your arm.

  55. They are still as a stone till your people, O Lord, pass by.

  56. Till the people pass by whom you have purchased.

  57. You will bring them in and plant them on your mountain.

  58. The place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode.

  59. The sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established.

  60. The Lord will reign forever and ever.

  61. For when the horses of Pharaoh and his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea,

  62. the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them.

  63. But the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea.

  64. Then Miriam, the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand.

  65. And all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing.

  66. And Miriam sang to them, sing to the Lord.

  67. For he has triumphed gloriously.

  68. The horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.

  69. Let's pray as we consider this word together.

  70. Oh, Lord God, we thank you that we can gather together Sunday after Sunday.

  71. We can come together as your people.

  72. We can sing praises to your name.

  73. And Lord, best of all, we can hear your voice speaking to us from your word.

  74. God, thank you that you're a speaking God.

  75. Thank you that you're worthy to be praised.

  76. Thank you that you call us out of ourselves to know you and to see you in all of your beauty and glory.

  77. Lord, would you do that this morning as we consider this passage?

  78. Would you help us to see you afresh in the power of your Holy Spirit?

  79. Help us to see you, Jesus.

  80. We pray in your name.

  81. Amen.

  82. Well, I wonder what, if anything, makes you want to sing?

  83. You might be thinking, nothing makes me want to sing.

  84. At least not in front of other people.

  85. Maybe if I'm in the shower and no one's around.

  86. Sometimes I think we sing just because we're happy, right?

  87. Imagine the crowded stadium singing the home team's fight song when they've just scored the game-winning goal, right?

  88. Some of you maybe experienced something like that.

  89. Sometimes we sing for the very opposite reason, because we're sad.

  90. Just think of all the great breakup songs that have been written, right?

  91. And just think of all the times those songs have been sung behind the wheel of a lonely drive home, right?

  92. Or in front of a laptop camera for display on YouTube or whatever have you.

  93. You know, sometimes we sing just because it's the thing to do, right?

  94. Out comes the cake, candles are lit, and suddenly all the guests break out into happy birthday to you without any instructions whatsoever.

  95. It just happens because it's the thing to do.

  96. How about when we come to church?

  97. Too often I think we sing because it's just the thing to do.

  98. If you're new to Christianity, if you're exploring spiritual things,

  99. maybe it still feels a bit strange to you to stand in a room with a hundred or so people you've never met

  100. who then just start singing together.

  101. And if you're used to church, take a step back.

  102. That is a bit strange if you think about it.

  103. But it's more than just the thing we do.

  104. There's actually a deep reason why we sing.

  105. In fact, when you look across the whole Bible,

  106. and church history for that matter,

  107. you see all sorts of songs.

  108. Songs of lament at times.

  109. Songs when people are brokenhearted.

  110. Songs of praise.

  111. Songs that tell a story and frame how we understand ourselves.

  112. We see people singing in their homes.

  113. And we see people singing in the temple.

  114. We see people singing even in prison cells in the Bible.

  115. The people of God seem to be always singing.

  116. And here in Exodus 15, we see a great example

  117. of why.

  118. Why?

  119. Why do we sing?

  120. Why can we sing?

  121. At this point in the story of Exodus, you'll remember,

  122. the people of Israel have just passed through the Red Sea to the other side.

  123. And there they stand on the shore of the Red Sea.

  124. Free.

  125. Liberated at last.

  126. God has rescued them from slavery.

  127. And they sing.

  128. And we know from Miriam's response in verse 20 and 21,

  129. kind of at the end of the section we just read,

  130. we know from Miriam's response that this song

  131. that Moses teaches the people that they sing together

  132. was meant to be sung again and again.

  133. Notice in verse 1, look at just this little detail.

  134. Notice that verse 1 says,

  135. I will sing.

  136. But now take a look at verse 21.

  137. It becomes an invitation.

  138. It becomes a command even.

  139. Sing.

  140. Miriam's words here,

  141. calling out to the women and through the women,

  142. to all the people,

  143. telling them to make the theme of this song their own.

  144. Sing.

  145. Sing.

  146. Telling us to make it our own.

  147. So what is the theme of this song of the sea,

  148. as it's sometimes called in Exodus 15?

  149. Well, what we see here in the song of the sea

  150. is that there's one big main point

  151. with two practical implications.

  152. One big point,

  153. two implications,

  154. two results.

  155. First, let's take a look at what this main point

  156. of the song of the sea is.

  157. And when you take a look through the first,

  158. say, 10, 11, 12 verses of this song,

  159. you see that God is praised here.

  160. This is a hymn of praise to God.

  161. And God is praised here,

  162. not just for sort of generally rescuing the people

  163. for bringing them out of Egypt.

  164. He's praised for something even more specific than that.

  165. Isn't he?

  166. This is a song of praise,

  167. because God destroyed the Egyptian army in the sea.

  168. Sing to the Lord for,

  169. because he's triumphed gloriously.

  170. The horse and the rider,

  171. he has thrown into the sea.

  172. In other words,

  173. we sing

  174. because our enemy has been conquered.

  175. First 12 verses of the song,

  176. God's pictured as a mighty warrior.

  177. Verse 3,

  178. the Lord is a man of war.

  179. The Lord is his name.

  180. Now, at first,

  181. that might make us a little uncomfortable,

  182. right?

  183. Are we meant to be praising

  184. some kind of angry, vindictive deity here?

  185. Some God who just sort of flies off in a rage

  186. and plays favorites?

  187. What sort of God is this?

  188. But look again,

  189. that's not the picture here at all.

  190. Rather,

  191. we're singing praise to a God

  192. who in great might

  193. has stood up

  194. for the oppressed

  195. and the poor

  196. and has become their champion.

  197. After all,

  198. Pharaoh and his chariots

  199. and their riders,

  200. the Egyptians,

  201. they aren't coming

  202. to say they're sorry.

  203. Right?

  204. They're not coming out

  205. to say,

  206. oh,

  207. 400 years of slavery,

  208. you know,

  209. let us give you a parting gift.

  210. They're not coming out

  211. to say they're sorry.

  212. They're coming out to what?

  213. To devour.

  214. Look at verse 9.

  215. The enemy said,

  216. I will pursue,

  217. I will overtake,

  218. I will divide the spoil.

  219. My desire shall have its fill of them.

  220. I will draw my sword

  221. and my hand

  222. shall destroy them.

  223. Pharaoh's hand,

  224. the hand

  225. that had held

  226. the people of Israel

  227. in slavery

  228. for generations

  229. is now set

  230. on destroying them.

  231. But

  232. there's a stronger hand.

  233. Verse 6.

  234. Your hand,

  235. your right hand,

  236. oh Lord,

  237. glorious,

  238. in power,

  239. your right hand,

  240. oh Lord,

  241. shatters the enemy.

  242. Imagine how it must have felt

  243. in 1945

  244. in London

  245. when VE Day,

  246. Victory in Europe Day,

  247. finally came

  248. when Nazi Germany

  249. finally fell.

  250. Imagine what it must have been like

  251. living in fear

  252. year after year after year,

  253. wondering

  254. wondering when the next

  255. bombing raid

  256. would strike.

  257. Wondering year after year

  258. when the next friend

  259. or family member

  260. would be lost

  261. in combat

  262. in some ditch

  263. far away

  264. on the continent.

  265. And now imagine

  266. what it must be like

  267. to hear the news

  268. that there's peace,

  269. that the enemy

  270. has been conquered

  271. and the war

  272. is over.

  273. historical accounts

  274. of 45

  275. in London

  276. tell us that

  277. more than a million

  278. people packed

  279. the streets

  280. from Trafalgar Square

  281. to Buckingham Palace.

  282. Is it any wonder

  283. that they rushed

  284. into the streets

  285. and I'm sure

  286. they were singing

  287. something,

  288. God save the queen,

  289. whatever they could think of

  290. king at that point.

  291. No wonder

  292. they packed

  293. the streets

  294. and rejoiced.

  295. No wonder

  296. the Israelites

  297. sang on the shores

  298. of the Red Sea.

  299. Imagine the relief,

  300. imagine the joy

  301. they must have felt

  302. to look back

  303. and say,

  304. there's no more enemy.

  305. He's gone.

  306. And yet friends,

  307. here's what we know.

  308. we know

  309. that there's

  310. an even greater

  311. victory that's been won.

  312. An even greater

  313. enemy that's been conquered.

  314. You see,

  315. in and behind

  316. human oppression

  317. and injustice,

  318. deep down

  319. in our own hearts,

  320. there's a power

  321. at work,

  322. isn't there?

  323. And this power

  324. makes it such

  325. that even when

  326. we know

  327. the right thing

  328. to do,

  329. we find that

  330. we end up

  331. not doing it.

  332. And the things

  333. that we know

  334. we ought not

  335. to do,

  336. well,

  337. those are the very

  338. things we end up

  339. doing.

  340. Have you ever

  341. found that

  342. to be true?

  343. Good.

  344. I'm not the only

  345. one in the room.

  346. Who knows

  347. what that's like?

  348. And here's the thing,

  349. despite telling

  350. ourselves again

  351. and again,

  352. this time

  353. it's going to be

  354. different.

  355. This time

  356. it's going to be

  357. different.

  358. Still,

  359. that same

  360. inability,

  361. that same

  362. power at work

  363. in us,

  364. deep down

  365. in our hearts

  366. is there.

  367. And the trouble

  368. with this enemy

  369. is that we

  370. can't seem

  371. to externalize it

  372. and we can't seem

  373. to separate it

  374. from ourselves.

  375. Right?

  376. Pharaoh's chariots

  377. and horsemen

  378. are one thing,

  379. scary,

  380. yes,

  381. but able to be

  382. conquered and

  383. God did it.

  384. But what about

  385. this thing

  386. in me?

  387. This power

  388. that seems

  389. to hold

  390. on to bitterness

  391. when I know

  392. I should forgive.

  393. This power

  394. that just

  395. wants to look

  396. the other way

  397. when my neighbors

  398. are in need,

  399. when I know

  400. I should probably

  401. give them a call

  402. or show up

  403. or offer to

  404. just listen

  405. and help.

  406. this power

  407. in me

  408. that always

  409. seems to want

  410. to bend

  411. the truth

  412. when I know

  413. I should be

  414. truthful.

  415. If the waters

  416. of the Red Sea

  417. were to come

  418. crashing down

  419. on all that,

  420. what would be

  421. left of me

  422. in the process?

  423. Wouldn't I be

  424. swept away

  425. with it?

  426. So we ask,

  427. how could God

  428. win this victory?

  429. How could God

  430. conquer this enemy?

  431. Listen to what

  432. the Apostle Paul

  433. says in Romans 7

  434. reflecting

  435. on all these

  436. rich themes

  437. of deliverance

  438. and exodus.

  439. Paul says this,

  440. he says,

  441. I delight in the

  442. law of God

  443. in my inner being,

  444. but I see

  445. in my members

  446. another law

  447. waging war

  448. against the law

  449. of my mind

  450. and making me

  451. captive

  452. to the law

  453. of sin

  454. that dwells

  455. in my members.

  456. Wretched man

  457. that I am,

  458. who will deliver

  459. me from this

  460. body of death?

  461. Exactly.

  462. Who

  463. can rescue

  464. us from this?

  465. But then he says,

  466. thanks

  467. be to God

  468. through Jesus

  469. Christ

  470. our Lord.

  471. You see,

  472. when sin

  473. had pursued

  474. us

  475. and sought

  476. to devour

  477. us

  478. and when we

  479. were held

  480. captive

  481. by its power,

  482. a power that all

  483. of us in this room

  484. were just nodding

  485. our heads about,

  486. right?

  487. When that was

  488. the case,

  489. Christ

  490. stepped in

  491. as our champion

  492. and as our

  493. victor.

  494. He

  495. bore

  496. the worst

  497. that sin

  498. had to offer

  499. on the cross.

  500. Standing

  501. in our place,

  502. identifying

  503. with us,

  504. taking on

  505. our flesh,

  506. becoming

  507. like us

  508. in every way

  509. and on the cross

  510. taking on

  511. that power

  512. of sin

  513. and taking

  514. on the judgment

  515. that it rightly

  516. deserved.

  517. Letting sin

  518. and death

  519. pour its

  520. cascade

  521. over him.

  522. And then

  523. Christ

  524. came through

  525. the waters

  526. of judgment,

  527. victorious,

  528. risen to new

  529. life,

  530. such that

  531. now sin

  532. has no

  533. claim on

  534. him

  535. and united

  536. to him

  537. by faith,

  538. sin no

  539. longer has

  540. any claim

  541. on those

  542. who trust

  543. in him.

  544. You see,

  545. because Christ,

  546. our victor,

  547. Christ,

  548. our warrior,

  549. Christ,

  550. our champion,

  551. has stepped

  552. in and

  553. taken hold

  554. of us

  555. and gone

  556. through the

  557. waters

  558. and come

  559. out,

  560. our sins

  561. have been

  562. forgiven.

  563. The old

  564. is gone.

  565. The new

  566. has come.

  567. The horse

  568. and the rider

  569. he has thrown

  570. into the sea.

  571. Sin and death

  572. have been

  573. defeated

  574. and we stand

  575. on the shore

  576. of the new

  577. creation.

  578. And that's

  579. why

  580. we ought

  581. to be a

  582. singing people.

  583. Because the

  584. battle has

  585. been won

  586. through Jesus,

  587. our king.

  588. That's why

  589. Paul tells

  590. the church

  591. in Colossi

  592. that we read

  593. earlier to

  594. sing.

  595. He says,

  596. let the

  597. word of

  598. Christ

  599. dwell in

  600. you richly,

  601. teaching and

  602. admonishing one

  603. another in

  604. all wisdom

  605. and singing.

  606. Singing

  607. psalms and

  608. hymns and

  609. spiritual songs

  610. with thankfulness

  611. in your hearts

  612. to God.

  613. With thankfulness

  614. for the word

  615. of Christ,

  616. for the gospel,

  617. for the good

  618. news that in

  619. his grace,

  620. God's forgiven

  621. our sins and

  622. triumphed over

  623. death.

  624. But here's

  625. the thing,

  626. it's not just

  627. now that

  628. we'll sing

  629. this song.

  630. It's actually

  631. a song we'll

  632. sing for

  633. eternity.

  634. It's very

  635. interesting,

  636. Revelation

    Revelation 15 chapter mention

  637. chapter 15,

  638. at the very

  639. end of the

  640. Bible,

  641. says,

  642. and they

  643. sing the

  644. song of

  645. Moses,

  646. the servant

  647. of God,

  648. and the

  649. song of

  650. the Lamb

  651. saying,

  652. great and

  653. amazing are

  654. your deeds,

  655. O Lord

  656. God Almighty.

  657. you see,

  658. this theme

  659. that in

  660. Jesus God

  661. has conquered

  662. our greatest

  663. enemies and

  664. set us

  665. free,

  666. this song

  667. of deliverance,

  668. this song

  669. of salvation,

  670. this song

  671. of praise

  672. on the shores

  673. of the Red

  674. Sea,

  675. that is a

  676. song that

  677. the church

  678. is going to

  679. sing forever

  680. with thanksgiving

  681. in our hearts

  682. to the Lord.

  683. Now,

  684. this does not

  685. mean that

  686. the people of

  687. God,

  688. that the church

  689. never sing

  690. songs of

  691. lament.

  692. It never

  693. means that

  694. we never

  695. sing songs

  696. of crying

  697. out for help.

  698. We sing all

  699. of those songs,

  700. don't we?

  701. And yet,

  702. running like

  703. a current

  704. underneath

  705. is this

  706. new song,

  707. this song

  708. of the sea

  709. that the

  710. horse and

  711. the rider

  712. God has

  713. thrown into

  714. the sea

  715. for us.

  716. You know,

  717. this is the

  718. good news

  719. of the gospel,

  720. friends.

  721. You know,

  722. I think most

  723. of us,

  724. most of our

  725. friends,

  726. most of our

  727. neighbors,

  728. you know,

  729. underneath the

  730. sort of

  731. busyness of

  732. life,

  733. there's,

  734. I mean,

  735. if we're honest,

  736. isn't there

  737. just a quiet

  738. rumble

  739. of despair?

  740. Just a

  741. quiet,

  742. gnawing

  743. sense

  744. that the

  745. bottom's

  746. gonna drop

  747. out

  748. at some

  749. point.

  750. You're only

  751. gonna live

  752. so long.

  753. That the

  754. sort of

  755. tones

  756. that are

  757. played

  758. underneath

  759. every

  760. moment of

  761. life,

  762. even the

  763. joyful

  764. moments,

  765. end up

  766. being a

  767. tone of

  768. sadness.

  769. And yet,

  770. here the

  771. gospel comes

  772. in and

  773. says,

  774. oh no,

  775. that's not

  776. the song

  777. that underlies

  778. everything else.

  779. let me

  780. take that

  781. song of

  782. despair from

  783. you and

  784. give you a

  785. song,

  786. give you a

  787. hymn of

  788. praise,

  789. give you a

  790. song of

  791. victory and

  792. triumph that

  793. will run like a

  794. current under all

  795. of your sadness,

  796. under all of your

  797. hardship and your

  798. moments of joy and

  799. your moments of

  800. struggle.

  801. Come take this

  802. song,

  803. because he's done

  804. it.

  805. Christ is risen,

  806. the horse and the

  807. rider he's thrown

  808. into the sea.

  809. Now as Moses

  810. continues this

  811. song on the

  812. shore of the

  813. Red Sea,

  814. he begins to

  815. sing that of

  816. two kind of

  817. results or

  818. implications.

  819. He sort of,

  820. he looks back

  821. and says,

  822. look at what

  823. God has done,

  824. they've sunk

  825. like a stone.

  826. God blew his

  827. nose and

  828. destroyed our

  829. enemies.

  830. That's one of

  831. the only sermons

  832. I remember from

  833. growing up,

  834. by the way,

  835. in the church

  836. that I grew up

  837. in.

  838. The pastor

  839. gave a sermon

  840. called,

  841. what happens

  842. when God

  843. blows his

  844. nose?

  845. And it was

  846. on this

  847. text.

  848. Did you

  849. catch that?

  850. Now I'm

  851. sure there's

  852. someone who

  853. will be the

  854. only sermon

  855. they ever

  856. remember here

  857. at Trinity.

  858. This is

  859. God,

  860. this is our

  861. God,

  862. he's so

  863. great,

  864. he's so

  865. amazing,

  866. he's like

  867. you,

  868. oh God.

  869. So Moses

  870. sort of looks

  871. back and

  872. then he

  873. looks ahead

  874. and he

  875. sings of

  876. two kind

  877. of results,

  878. two implications

  879. of the fact

  880. that God

  881. has triumphed

  882. over his

  883. enemies.

  884. And the

  885. first is

  886. this,

  887. that the

  888. surrounding

  889. nations

  890. will fear

  891. God.

  892. Look again

  893. at verses

  894. 14 through

  895. 16,

  896. in the

  897. song of

  898. the sea

  899. here.

  900. Those names,

  901. if you're not

  902. familiar with

  903. those,

  904. those are

  905. nations in

  906. and around

  907. the promised

  908. land where

  909. God is

  910. eventually going

  911. to take

  912. his people.

  913. And Moses

  914. says that

  915. they're going

  916. to hear what

  917. God has

  918. done and

  919. they're going

  920. to tremble.

  921. God is

  922. to hear what

  923. God is

  924. God is

  925. a God

  926. who saves

  927. and God

  928. saves in

  929. such a

  930. mighty way

  931. that the

  932. nations will

  933. see his

  934. greatness

  935. and worship

  936. him.

  937. Of course,

  938. in the Old

  939. Testament,

  940. we see only

  941. a shadow

  942. of what this

  943. means.

  944. But when

  945. the New

  946. Testament,

  947. when the

  948. New Covenant

  949. comes,

  950. that has

  951. unfolded in

  952. all of its

  953. fullness.

  954. I've been

  955. reading the

  956. book of Acts

  957. recently in

  958. just some of

  959. my personal

  960. prayer time.

  961. And don't

  962. you see there

  963. that people

  964. from all

  965. nations don't

  966. just hear about

  967. Israel's God,

  968. but they come

  969. to trust and

  970. believe in

  971. Jesus,

  972. Israel's

  973. Messiah.

  974. They come

  975. to trust and

  976. believe in

  977. him as the

  978. world's true

  979. Savior and

  980. Lord.

  981. The nations

  982. now aren't

  983. just trembling

  984. because they

  985. heard of this

  986. mighty deed,

  987. but now they're

  988. trembling in

  989. worship and

  990. love as they

  991. take this

  992. God as

  993. their own.

  994. Moses was

  995. helping the

  996. people of

  997. Israel to

  998. see here,

  999. something I

  1000. think is

  1001. very important

  1002. for us.

  1003. He was

  1004. helping the

  1005. people to

  1006. see and to

  1007. sing right

  1008. here on the

  1009. shore of the

  1010. Red Sea that

  1011. if God had

  1012. defeated the

  1013. Egyptians behind

  1014. them,

  1015. then the

  1016. nations in

  1017. front of

  1018. them wouldn't

  1019. ultimately be

  1020. able to undo

  1021. them either.

  1022. If God had

  1023. defeated the

  1024. enemies behind

  1025. you, the

  1026. enemies in

  1027. front of you

  1028. won't be able

  1029. to conquer

  1030. you either.

  1031. And it's

  1032. true for us

  1033. today.

  1034. If Jesus has

  1035. defeated sin

  1036. and death, if

  1037. God has made

  1038. us his children

  1039. and called us

  1040. his own, what

  1041. is there really

  1042. to fear in

  1043. what lies

  1044. ahead?

  1045. God has

  1046. to fear in

  1047. God.

  1048. Of course, this

  1049. isn't saying

  1050. that we ought

  1051. to be triumphalist.

  1052. After all, between

  1053. the Red Sea and

  1054. the Promised Land,

  1055. what is there?

  1056. There's a

  1057. wilderness.

  1058. And in that

  1059. wilderness, there's

  1060. going to be hunger

  1061. and thirst and

  1062. there are nations

  1063. waiting to attack.

  1064. There are hardships

  1065. ahead.

  1066. But here in this

  1067. song, if the

  1068. greatest enemy has

  1069. already been sunk

  1070. in the sea, then

  1071. we need not be

  1072. afraid.

  1073. So the first

  1074. result is that

  1075. the nations will

  1076. fear God.

  1077. And the second

  1078. result is that

  1079. God will bring

  1080. his people safely

  1081. to his dwelling

  1082. place.

  1083. We see this in

  1084. verse 13 and

  1085. verse 17.

  1086. Let me read

  1087. those two verses

  1088. again for us.

  1089. You have led

  1090. in your steadfast

  1091. love the

  1092. people whom

  1093. you have

  1094. redeemed.

  1095. You have

  1096. guided them by

  1097. your strength

  1098. to your holy

  1099. abode.

  1100. You will bring

  1101. them in and

  1102. plant them on

  1103. your own

  1104. mountain.

  1105. This place, O

  1106. Lord, which you

  1107. have made for

  1108. your abode, the

  1109. sanctuary, O

  1110. Lord, which your

  1111. hands have

  1112. established.

  1113. We saw this at

  1114. the very start of

  1115. our series in

  1116. Exodus, didn't

  1117. we?

  1118. That God saves

  1119. in order to

  1120. dwell in our

  1121. midst.

  1122. God rescues

  1123. us so that he

  1124. can be with

  1125. us.

  1126. That the God

  1127. of the Bible

  1128. is a God who

  1129. comes into

  1130. intimate relationship

  1131. with his people.

  1132. He's a God who

  1133. comes near, so

  1134. near that he

  1135. even dwells in

  1136. our midst.

  1137. And that

  1138. dwelling has a

  1139. future.

  1140. The future for

  1141. the people of

  1142. Israel was a

  1143. home in the

  1144. land of Canaan.

  1145. And eventually

  1146. the temple that

  1147. Solomon would build

  1148. would be the

  1149. place where God's

  1150. glory dwelt in

  1151. their midst.

  1152. But you see, the

  1153. land and the

  1154. temple, that was

  1155. just a signpost of

  1156. an even greater

  1157. dwelling place that

  1158. God has in store

  1159. for his people.

  1160. That was just a

  1161. picture of what

  1162. was to come.

  1163. The Apostle

  1164. Peter writes in

  1165. his second letter

  1166. that according to

  1167. God's promise,

  1168. we're waiting for

  1169. a new heavens and

  1170. a new earth in

  1171. which righteousness

  1172. dwells.

  1173. The promised

  1174. land of the

  1175. Old Testament

  1176. was just a

  1177. picture of a

  1178. pointer to what

  1179. God promises to

  1180. do for the

  1181. whole creation.

  1182. To cover it with

  1183. his glory as the

  1184. waters cover the

  1185. sea.

  1186. To dwell with his

  1187. people and make

  1188. all things new.

  1189. That it wouldn't

  1190. just be a little

  1191. patch of earth in

  1192. Palestine, but it

  1193. would be the whole

  1194. earth made new.

  1195. You see, the song

  1196. of the church,

  1197. friends, is a

  1198. song of victory

  1199. in what Jesus has

  1200. done, and it's a

  1201. song of confidence

  1202. in what he's doing

1203. now in the midst of

  1204. the wilderness, but

  1205. it's also a song of

  1206. hope in what he

  1207. will do.

  1208. That if Jesus has

  1209. conquered sin and

  1210. death, then

  1211. ultimately he will

  1212. bring us safely

  1213. home, that he will

  1214. return in glory, and

  1215. all the earth will

  1216. be liberated from

  1217. evil and injustice,

  1218. sickness, and

  1219. death.

  1220. And as verse 18

  1221. says, the Lord will

  1222. reign forever and

  1223. ever.

  1224. So what, if

  1225. anything, makes you

  1226. want to sing?

  1227. The song of Moses,

  1228. as Miriam tells us,

  1229. as an invitation.

  1230. I wonder, friends,

  1231. can you sing verse

  1232. two?

  1233. Look at that verse.

  1234. The Lord is my

  1235. strength and my

  1236. song, and he has

  1237. become my salvation.

1238. This is my God, and I

  1239. will praise him.

  1240. That's very personal,

  1241. isn't it?

  1242. my strength.

  1243. My strength, my

  1244. strength, my song, my

  1245. salvation, my God.

1246. That's what it means to

  1247. become a Christian, to

  1248. look to Jesus Christ,

  1249. crucified and risen,

  1250. seated at God's right

1251. hand, the very Son of

1252. God, and to say to him,

1253. you are my strength and

  1254. my song.

  1255. You, Lord, are my

  1256. salvation.

  1257. You are my God.

  1258. To entrust yourself

  1259. completely to him.

1260. That's what he calls us

  1261. to do, even now.

  1262. And once you've taken

  1263. that step, once you've

  1264. made that decision, once

1265. you can sing that as

1266. your song, Jesus tells us

1267. that the next step is to

  1268. make a public profession

  1269. in baptism.

  1270. baptism.

  1271. Baptism is something that

  1272. Jesus commands, and it

  1273. essentially says, I'm

  1274. identifying with Christ.

  1275. He is my salvation.

  1276. He is my strength.

  1277. He is my song.

  1278. He is my God.

  1279. And there's nothing I'm

  1280. holding back from him.

1281. I'm going to get totally

  1282. wet.

  1283. Baptism says that he,

  1284. Jesus, has gone through

1285. the waters of judgment for

  1286. me.

1287. He's died and risen again,

1288. and through faith in him,

1289. I've come to new life as

  1290. well.

  1291. Friends, I wonder if you're

1292. here this morning and you

1293. can sing verse two to God,

  1294. to Christ.

  1295. Have you been baptized?

1296. Are you ready to take on the

1297. joy of stepping into the

1298. waters of baptism and be

  1299. reminded and be powerfully

1300. encouraged by what God has

1301. done and this gift that he

1302. gives you to be publicly

  1303. proclaiming your union with

  1304. him?

1305. Well, this morning we're going

1306. to invite Geneva and we're

1307. going to invite Tricia to come

1308. on up, and they're going to

  1309. do just that.

1310. They're going to tell us what

1311. God has done in their life,

1312. how they've come to know

  1313. Christ, and then they're

1314. going to step into the

  1315. waters and get baptized.

1316. The elders have met with

1317. both Tricia and Geneva, and

  1318. we've affirmed their

1319. profession of faith, and it's

1320. our privilege to bring them

  1321. forward for baptism.

1322. So let me invite them to

  1323. come on up.

1324. They're going to share their

1325. stories, and then we'll sing,

  1326. and then we'll celebrate

  1327. baptism together.

1328. And as they come on up,

1329. let me pray for us.

  1340. creation in him.

1341. Lord, you are our strength,

1342. and you are our song, and we

1344. Lord, we pray all this in

  1345. Jesus' name.

  1346. Amen.
