  1. so let's let's let's ask God to be with us before we look at his word our father in heaven we

  2. simply pray that you would be here by your spirit this morning as we look at your word and study it

  3. and meditate on it together thank you for the great and awesome truths it contains in Jesus name

  4. so we have a relatively lengthy passage this is gonna bother me um so we're acts chapter two

  5. and we're going to be reading verses 14 through 41 um i wonder if i might get a couple of volunteers

  6. to maybe break that up and and read um read the entire passage for us any volunteers

  7. okay so tyler why don't you start and then stop where it seems about a third way laurie you pick up

  8. uh and do the same and then brian you finish this off nice and loud though okay because

  9. yeah acts chapter two verse 14 uh but peter standing with the eleven lifted up his voice

  10. and addressed them men of judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem let this be known to you and give

  11. the ears to my words for these people are not drunk as you suppose it is only the third hour of the day

  12. but this is what was uttered through the prophet joel and in the last days it shall be what god

  13. declares that i will pour out my spirit on all flesh and your son and your daughter shall prophesy

  14. and your young men shall have visions and your old men shall dream dreams even on my male servants

  15. and female servants in those days i will pour out my spirit and they shall prophesy i will show wonders

  16. in the heavens above and signs on the earth below blood and fire and vapor of snow the sun shall be

  17. turned to darkness in the moon's blood before the day of the lord comes the great and magnificent day

  18. and it shall come to pass if everyone who calls upon the name of the lord shall be saved

  19. men of israel hear these words jesus of nazareth a man attested to you by god with mighty works and

  20. wonders and signs that god did through him in your midst as you yourselves know this jesus delivered up

  21. according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of god you crucified and killed by the hands of

  22. lawless men god raised him up loose loosing the pangs of death because it was not possible for him to be

  23. held by it for david says concerning him i saw the lord always before me for he is at my right hand that

  24. i may not be shaken therefore my heart was glad and my tongue rejoiced my flesh also will dwell in hope

  25. for you will not abandon my soul to hades or let your holy one see corruption you have made known to me

  26. the path of life you will make me full of gladness with your presence brothers i may say to you with

  27. confidence about the patriarch david that he both died and was buried and his tomb is with us to this

  28. day being therefore a prophet and knowing that god had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of

  29. his descendants on his throne he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of christ that he was not

  30. abandoned to hades nor did his flesh see corruption this jesus god raised up

  31. and of that we are all witnesses being therefore exalted at the right hand of god and having received

  32. from the father the promise of the holy spirit he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing

  33. and hearing for david did not descend into the heavens but he himself says the lord said to my lord sit at

  34. my right hand until i make your enemies your footstool but all the house of israel therefore know

  35. for certain that god has made him both lord and christ this jesus whom you crucified now when they heard

  36. this they were cut to the heart and said to peter and to the rest of the apostles brothers what shall we

  37. do and peter said to them repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ for the

  38. forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the holy spirit for the promise is for you

  39. and for your children and for all who are far off everyone whom the lord our god calls to himself

  40. and with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them saying save yourselves from the

  41. crooked generation from this crooked generation so those who received his word were baptized and there

  42. were at that day about three thousand souls okay great thank you so we can see that there's a summary

  43. verse um if you look at verse 36 and peter says let all the house of israel therefore know for certain

  44. that god has made him both lord and christ this jesus whom you crucified and then shortly after

  45. after in verse 38 he says therefore repent okay so if we're going to understand i think the weight of

  46. what's going on we have to think about the context that peter's speaking into um

  47. we have the expectations of the people for what the messiah is going to be and um i want to read a couple

  48. passages for you to just put a little flavor on the the uh uh may you of what peter's speaking into

  49. um just after the resurrection happened okay so this is matthew chapter 27 this is the scene at the

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  50. crucifixion it's going to be familiar passage uh let me read a few verses for us

  51. and over his head they put a charge against him which read this is jesus the king of the jews

  52. then two robbers were crucified with him one on the right and one on the left and those who passed by

  53. derided him wagging their heads and saying you would just you who would destroy the temple and rebuild it

  54. in three days save yourself if you are the son of god come down from the cross

  55. so also the chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him saying he saved others he cannot

  56. save himself he is the king of israel let him come down now from the cross and we will believe in him

  57. he trusts in god let god deliver him if he desires him for he said i am the son of god

  58. god so basically what's happening is jesus is in his ministry claiming to be uh the messiah to which

  59. the jewish people perceive to be um a military ruler right who's going to come and liberate them from the

  60. romans and that is part um being king of course is part of what the prediction of the messiah was to

  61. be but there's also another side to being messiah which was which was what

  62. right so uh the suffering servant uh motif which the people um weren't prepared for right so

  63. um even people within jesus circle so i want to read another passage to to continue to flesh this out

  64. just a little bit so this is um a few verses from the emmaus road account so familiar with jesus has

  65. died he's been resurrected he's now encounters these two men on the emmaus road and this again is familiar

  66. but let me read these verses for us and jesus said to them what is this conversation that you are holding

  67. with each other as you walk and they stood still looking sad then one of them named cleopas answered

  68. him are you the only visitor to jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these

  69. days and he said to them what things and they said to him concerning jesus of nazareth a man who was a

  70. prophet mighty indeed and word before god and all the people and how our chief priests and rulers

  71. delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him but we had hoped that he was the one to redeem

  72. israel and he said to them oh foolish ones and slow and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets that

  73. had spoken was it not necessary that the christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory

  74. and beginning with moses and all the prophets he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things

  75. concerning himself okay so what we have is jesus himself

  76. explaining that there was a multi-dimensional facet to being messiah right there was this suffering

  77. servant who was to be the high priest the ultimate high priest of god's people who was going to suffer

  78. and pay for sins and make a way for forgiveness of sins but also a whole on the other side there's a

  79. whole nother dimension of christ which is his kingship his lordship over all and the people

  80. could not really conceive of those two things blending together and so they had a a pretty

  81. um narrow expectation of what messiah was going to be so that's if we if we have that in our backdrop

  82. and then we go back again and look at verse 36 so peter says let all the house of israel therefore

  83. know for certain that god has made jesus both lord and christ

  84. this jesus whom you crucified so what do you think is our possible ways we could render

  85. peter putting these two things out there side by side and saying there's a and b and jesus was actually

  86. both a and b what what would those what are possibilities for those two things well what does he mean by lord

  87. this is not a trick question but what does he mean by lord

  88. god

  89. what what category for what we were just talking about

  90. if peter says yes this jesus who you said if you really are

  91. king of the jews come on down from the cross by the way i hope we feel

  92. i hope we can existentially feel the weight of

  93. that moment where jesus is hanging on a cross and human beings are at the foot of the cross and

  94. saying you said you were you said you were king we doubted you this whole time now we've pinned you onto a tree

  95. let's see you prove it now which is interesting as we talk about the resurrection right because

  96. there's a big proof is coming um anyways lord is master lord is

  97. king when peter says jesus is lord it almost goes beyond the conception right of earthly king it is

  98. lord so what do you think might he mean then when he uses the word christ

  99. as a both and it it would be odd i think if those were synonyms that he would

  100. put them side by side like that in that phraseology

  101. so christ means messiah

  102. uh but you know looking at it this way you might say ah the other picture of the messiah the suffering

  103. sir

  104. yes so that's what i think is happening i think peter is trying to expand in the mind of his audience

  105. that messiah by god's determination is a much broader um role and because if you think about it

  106. the people all all saw jesus um get crucified this is just just happened and now the resurrection has

  107. also happened and there's accounts of it floating all around and so the part of messiahship which is the

  108. payment for sins is um in the background almost visually for these people at this time right

  109. it's the kingship of jesus frankly that is even at this point

  110. um jesus kingship has not been visually um

  111. uh well we well let's ask the question um what type of proof

  112. was offered the people that jesus was the king

  113. um and i'll even i'll even expand the question to prior to his prior to his crucifixion and

  114. resurrection what proofs did the people have that jesus was the messiah

  115. um and what proofs were they not given so i want to think about that together what what what

  116. were they shown and what were they not shown um the voice from heaven bearing him back to them

  117. good yes

  118. talk and the transfiguration they heard the voice again but only three three of the disciples heard

  119. that right yes good and all the miracles but um a lot of people did miracles so that wasn't really what

  120. they were looking for they were looking for they were looking for something

  121. they carried the voice

  122. right yes

  123. right

  124. they were

  125. they were afraid so

  126. they couldn't obey to a human being right

  127. so jesus said be calm to the storm and the calm and the storm was calm so we could we could

  128. roughly have a category that with that we would call signs and wonders

  129. and within signs and wonders or miracles or maybe even the voice of god coming down in affirmation of jesus

  130. um so there's there's there's that whole category of proofs if you want to if we want to

  131. term it that way um what else though there's another big category

  132. um we talk with authority and it's authority that

  133. other religious leaders sometimes felt threatened by yes

  134. yes so for example we do have we do have accounts where jesus took out the scroll and

  135. read about the messiah and then rolled the scroll back up and says something like

  136. this person that was just spoken of is here and you're misreading the scroll team

  137. um that kind of thing um and

  138. i think that would fall into your category of that he spoke in a in a in a way but that

  139. i don't know that that's evidence right he could have been just

  140. yes okay so we have the and this is where peter goes as part of his sermon here um to the old

  141. testament predictions um and prophecies about the messiah which jesus uh fulfilled

  142. but what types of proofs

  143. were not given to the people

  144. military and political conflict

  145. okay the the kingship that they were expecting

  146. there was very very little evidence of that humanly speaking right

  147. um

  148. um

  149. we're gonna we're gonna think through that a little bit here coming up but i just want to put that on the table for us to think about

  150. um

  151. he raised people from the dead that's pretty

  152. signs and wonders

  153. which by the way

  154. signs and wonders were also predicted as proofs of the messiah so they're kind of that's kind of in both categories

  155. um

  156. uh i'm i'm gonna argue that

  157. what was done was enough to be in the category that should have trumped the people's

  158. misunderstanding of

  159. of what messiah was going to be

  160. ben

  161. yes so uh good point and so that's that's a whole nother part of the discussion is is um

  162. i mean jesus says well even if a man were to come back from the dead

  163. people still aren't going to believe which is ironic because who came back from the dead and who

  164. so you're you're getting into

  165. sort of

  166. what does it

  167. all these evidences at the end of the day

  168. are not

  169. the heart changing

  170. power

  171. right

  172. but for now for this discussion i'm

  173. for us to understand what's going on with what peter's saying

  174. um

  175. i want to i want to think about

  176. um

  177. these proofs that are shown and and not shown so

  178. um

  179. you know even if we go back to acts chapter one even the believers

  180. um

  181. are still sort of even the people who are with peter and who are who have

  182. who have repented and are on are who are believing jesus even they are saying

  183. they say

  184. uh so

  185. when they had come together they asked him jesus lord

  186. will you at this time restore the kingdom to israel

  187. it's like as if they're saying

  188. all right it's it's go time now like we were we're all with you you're resurrected

  189. but now you're really going to come and do what we thought you were going to do in the first place

  190. our agenda

  191. so let's start seeing some fireworks you know

  192. and jesus said to them it is not for you to know times or seasons that the father has fixed by his

  193. own authority

  194. in other words

  195. jesus is a real king

  196. the real king determines

  197. which threats are the real threats to the people and he goes regardless of what the masses are saying in the in the brew houses

  198. right and deals with the real threats

  199. and you can see the masses are still like hey it's time to it's time to pick pick up your kingship and

  200. crush our immediate enemies

  201. um

  202. so

  203. i'd like to think together about what what were the error what errors were the people making with regard to their

  204. um belief

  205. paradigm

  206. they were thinking entirely in human times

  207. yes

  208. just what they could experience right there in that moment in that work

  209. yes

  210. they were taking the evidence

  211. and

  212. weighing the evidence

  213. the evidence is

  214. wrong wrongly by the way

  215. i'm just gonna show one of my cards here what i'm actually trying

  216. trying to do

  217. we are the they

  218. uh

  219. so

  220. right exactly thank you

  221. i don't need to elaborate on that

  222. um

  223. what else what other what other errors clay

  224. there's this sort of preconceived notion of what the savior would look like

  225. and who the savior would associate with

  226. instead of then when you have

  227. somebody that comes and says they're the savior and now they're associating

  228. cleaning prostitutes fee and

  229. helping the lowest although that doesn't exactly fit their description instead

  230. uh

  231. right

  232. that's

  233. true

  234. and

  235. what's behind do you think

  236. what's the heart attitude behind

  237. people determining what their savior should look like for themselves

  238. how much of them benefit them

  239. i'm sorry what

  240. how much of them benefit them

  241. right but i'm after more of um

  242. a diagnosis has to be made

  243. for internally for people then they prescribe their own medicine and then they look for their medicine to come

  244. and if it doesn't look like what they prescribe for themselves

  245. their god ship

  246. just got questioned

  247. okay so

  248. this goes all the way back to the garden

  249. right which is

  250. we want to be

  251. our own boss

  252. and we want to determine for ourselves even what we need to get out of a big hole like we're

  253. being oppressed by the romans and

  254. we need a military leader to come

  255. where were the people that are like we've got a huge sin problem between us and a holy god

  256. and if god's telling us that his savior is going to save on the level of ultimate spiritual reality

  257. we we need to submit to that

  258. right

  259. now

  260. this idea

  261. that god knows what we need

  262. is a is a huge lesson that i think

  263. this this

  264. proclamation of the resurrection

  265. hammers home and i'm going to try to show that here in a second

  266. um

  267. so in light of this the significance of the resurrection

  268. let's let's shift into that and talk about that

  269. i think

  270. that the resurrection is god's way

  271. of shouting

  272. um

  273. a divine affirmation from heaven

  274. that jesus is

  275. the priestly sacrifice

  276. for sins that is acceptable

  277. and

  278. that jesus is

  279. the victorious king

  280. that has triumphed over his and our

  281. true

  282. greatest enemies

  283. and eventually all enemies

  284. and it's god's way

  285. and this is the part i really want to emphasize because we're all from

  286. of course

  287. everyone here who's a believer is familiar with

  288. the idea of the resurrection and that

  289. jesus died

  290. for sins and god said yes

  291. this was adequate i raise you to validate it

  292. or we might even connect it directly to those people at the foot of the cross saying

  293. if you really are the king

  294. prove it

  295. come on down and god proved it

  296. by not only having

  297. if he had come down from the cross in the middle of all that

  298. that would have been one thing but to be

  299. to be dead and buried and then come down off the cross as it were

  300. is

  301. a much louder declaration

  302. of affirmation of jesus right

  303. but what i want to emphasize is the shouting part of it this is g this is god the

  304. father declaring

  305. declaring to the world

  306. that jesus is who he says that he is in all of his dimensions

  307. and that

  308. frankly

  309. the things that are getting debated on ground level between human beings

  310. should be getting drowned out

  311. by the shouting of you know i like that that you brought up um this verbal affirmation of god on jesus

  312. um

  313. you know uh this is like that

  314. times a million that god would bring him back from the dead

  315. um

  316. and

  317. and

  318. here's

  319. why i'm saying that

  320. were the people actually given the proofs that they wanted

  321. prior to i mean they're they're there with their hands on their hips saying okay

  322. you don't look like a king to us we're going to crucify you

  323. then when he was resurrected he still hasn't shifted into consummation of his

  324. kingship right

  325. visibly to the people

  326. and it's almost as if peter's saying here's this great reality

  327. to reorder how you're how you're measuring everything

  328. now

  329. how is that relevant to us i think this is so relevant to us

  330. um

  331. when we are

  332. wrestling with our own doubts for example

  333. or when we have circumstances in our life

  334. that that if we were to just use the circumstances as the rubric

  335. for let's just take let's just say is god loving does god love me

  336. if we were to use this human circumstances only

  337. kind of like the people did at the time jesus showed up

  338. on earth

  339. what we're what conclusions might we be tempted to draw

  340. again this is not a trick question

  341. question

  342. i would be

  343. one of the worst person at that time

  344. because

  345. every day in the situation

  346. i look at the situation

  347. as a human being

  348. yes

  349. um

  350. you know for that matter

  351. um

  352. um

  353. we could say well what proofs do we have right now that jesus is king of the universe

  354. ourselves

  355. um

  356. jesus is absolutely

  357. on the throne reigning

  358. uh

  359. what proofs do we have humanly speaking

  360. uh

  361. for that

  362. so

  363. what's the what's the christian answer to this

  364. if if i if i have a brother that comes to me and he says man

  365. i've got this going on in my life

  366. i've got this going on in my life

  367. i just read this book that

  368. really makes me wonder if

  369. god's loving at all you know what's our answer to that

  370. where are we pointed

  371. to

  372. by the new testament authors

  373. romans 5 god's demonstrated his love for us that while we were still yet sinners he died for us and then

  374. the resurrection proves that it's the objective evidence so we look to the cross when

  375. we

  376. doubt

  377. god's loving god at all

  378. why would loving god send his own son to die for

  379. sinners if he's not

  380. yes and

  381. so what i'm trying to argue is that

  382. that reality is in a whole different category it is not

  383. a counter argument that comes along against your

  384. doubts and it's like oh you know that it that it just sort of edges them out

  385. this is more like

  386. god saying this is ultimate reality

  387. and

  388. if we're just gonna be honest for a moment we are not given answers to every single one of our

  389. questions and i think that the passage from acts one has that flavor right it is not for you to know every

  390. thing that god's doing god is god god is king kings

  391. do things that they are free

  392. this is

  393. and so

  394. i think for us

  395. the question kind of swings around on us

  396. it's do we have that paradigm are we living out our christian life

  397. with that paradigm

  398. that this declaration and demonstration

  399. of what God has done in raising Jesus from the dead

  400. and validating his priestly role

  401. as a substitute sacrifice for us

  402. and also validating his kingly role

  403. as having authority over us.

  404. Are we holding that in the proper category of our heart

  405. so that these smaller issues

  406. are held in the proper perspective

  407. and considered by us to be smaller issues?

  408. Does that make sense?

  409. I always have appreciated when I hear sermons

  410. or when I hear someone read passages

  411. that are along the lines of,

  412. what more could God do

  413. than to send his own son to us

  414. and then put a seal on it

  415. by raising him from the dead?

  416. Now, some people might answer,

  417. I'll tell you what he could do.

  418. He could walk in this room right now

  419. and he could answer all of our questions

  420. and he could stop all the suffering in the world.

  421. But really, if we say that,

  422. then what we're saying is,

  423. well, we demand God to jump through our hoops

  424. and not be the king that he says he needs to be.

  425. And we now have made the same error

  426. where we've elevated ourselves

  427. to try to put ourselves back up

  428. on the board of directors.

  429. Jeff, I think no matter how far you dig into this,

  430. at some point you reach the limit of human understanding.

  431. Yes.

  432. And that's why we call it faith.

  433. Because there are some, like the Bible says,

  434. faith is belief and things unseen.

  435. If God did everything that we wanted him to do

  436. to prove that he was God,

  437. he would no longer be God

  438. because he would not be requiring faith

  439. from us to believe in him.

  440. So we're not believing,

  441. it's not blinding.

  442. Each one of us in our lives

  443. have had experience where we know personally

  444. that God expressed his Godship

  445. to us and through us

  446. and through other people around us.

  447. And some of those experiences

  448. have been very traumatic and very painful.

  449. And we know that without the divinity of God,

  450. the grace of God,

  451. we wouldn't have made it through that.

  452. But I can't write that out mathematically

  453. and prove it sometimes.

  454. If someone comes to me,

  455. as you said earlier,

  456. and said,

  457. I got this problem,

  458. I got that problem,

  459. and I read the Bible,

  460. and I want to know what God's going to do

  461. to solve my problems,

  462. my answer is,

  463. I can't answer that question for you.

  464. I don't know what God's going to do

  465. about your financial situation

  466. or your relationship situation.

  467. I don't know what God is going to do

  468. about each one of these specific,

  469. real human problems that you have.

  470. And if I could explain that to you,

  471. then there would be no more mystery left in God.

  472. There would be no more requirement for our faith.

  473. I think at some point,

  474. we have to understand

  475. that we can't explain everything to everybody

  476. for their satisfaction.

  477. And that's what happened

  478. when Jesus was hanging on the cross.

  479. Even after he rose from the dead,

  480. people were still trying to get him

  481. to explain things to them

  482. in terms that they could understand

  483. rather than getting them to understand

  484. that if you took an act of faith on their part

  485. in response to the grace of God,

  486. there are a lot of people

  487. and I've had conversations with people

  488. that have challenged me to prove that God exists

  489. because they don't believe God exists.

  490. I don't have an answer to prove that God exists

  491. because there is a point where

  492. human understanding stops

  493. and we can't fully understand God.

  494. Yeah.

  495. Yeah, I think that

  496. another way of sort of articulating

  497. what you said is that

  498. Keller says this.

  499. I think it's a nice formulation.

  500. You know, God,

  501. he doesn't give us all the answers

  502. to all of our questions.

  503. He doesn't give us a perfect argument,

  504. but he does give us a perfect person.

  505. And

  506. the embodiment of that person

  507. is like God's way of saying,

  508. this is the way home to me,

  509. but you don't get to invent your own way.

  510. So you have to accept

  511. this on my terms.

  512. And I think

  513. this sermon,

  514. we see a lot,

  515. we see some people

  516. that God wakes up

  517. through this sermon

  518. that says,

  519. I will accept your terms.

  520. We crucified

  521. the Son of God.

  522. And I don't think

  523. they understood everything.

  524. Obviously,

  525. they didn't

  526. because we have so much evidence

  527. of what

  528. the true believers

  529. are saying to Jesus

  530. after the fact.

  531. You know,

  532. they didn't get

  533. all their doubts answered.

  534. They didn't get

  535. everything resolved.

  536. This greater light

  537. shone on them

  538. and they're like,

  539. they just said,

  540. we're jumping off,

  541. we're jumping into this.

  542. We don't have to have

  543. all the answers.

  544. Now,

  545. I think a lot of answers

  546. can be had.

  547. So I don't want to say

  548. that I think this is a cop-out

  549. where we

  550. don't have to get serious

  551. about looking at what

  552. God has given us

  553. by way of certain arguments

  554. and all that.

  555. But having walked along

  556. with God for a good long while now,

  557. being 47 years old,

  558. I am ready to say

  559. the person of Jesus

  560. has to trump my doubts.

  561. It's the simplest way

  562. to say it.

  563. The resurrected Jesus

  564. as Savior and Lord

  565. is sufficient for me

  566. or he's not.

  567. And

  568. I am thankful

  569. to report,

  570. just from my own

  571. personal witness to you,

  572. that

  573. God has really met me

  574. personally in that way.

  575. I mean,

  576. I feel

  577. whenever I

  578. start tilting my head,

  579. I'm like,

  580. man,

  581. what do I do

  582. with this

  583. thing over here?

  584. What do I do

  585. with this poor girl

  586. that was born

  587. into a ghetto

  588. and

  589. had no chance

  590. it seems like

  591. and then died

  592. some horrible death

  593. and in my heart,

  594. I'm like,

  595. how is God fair

  596. and how is that right

  597. and how is he loving?

  598. It's just this one little example

  599. of a rock I get

  600. in my shoe

  601. from time to time.

  602. But then I look to Jesus

  603. and I say,

  604. well,

  605. wait a minute.

  606. It can't be

  607. that God's not loving

  608. because

  609. I have this greater truth

  610. that drowns that out.

  611. But I don't have my answer.

  612. I can't write

  613. a pamphlet on it

  614. that's going to make

  615. someone that hates God

  616. in their heart

  617. not hate him

  618. if they're not going

  619. to look to the person

  620. of Jesus

  621. to let that trump

  622. the other things

  623. they don't understand.

  624. I had written down here

  625. to discuss together

  626. some,

  627. to kind of drill

  628. into

  629. this next,

  630. so Peter says,

  631. repent.

  632. So there's this call

  633. to these folks

  634. to repent.

  635. repent.

  636. And it's a command

  637. and it's a call

  638. and there is the promise

  639. that God will forgive

  640. whoever repents

  641. right on the heels

  642. of this command

  643. to repent.

  644. But I thought

  645. it would be helpful

  646. for us to think about,

  647. let's say you were

  648. one of the people

  649. there listening

  650. to that sermon.

  651. And let's say,

  652. it is probably likely

  653. that some of those people

  654. were at the crucifixion scene.

  655. I mean,

  656. Peter says,

  657. you crucified him.

  658. I think that's probably

  659. literal for a lot

  660. of the folks

  661. that were listening

  662. to this sermon.

  663. Now when Peter says,

  664. you've got to repent

  665. and receive this forgiveness

  666. that your high priest

  667. Jesus has done for you.

  668. If you imagine

  669. these folks

  670. actually repenting

  671. for individual sins,

  672. what do you think

  673. would be

  674. on the top

  675. of the list?

  676. Because sometimes

  677. I think we,

  678. we,

  679. we're like,

  680. okay,

  681. yeah,

  682. repent from my sins.

  683. So it's like,

  684. it's sort of,

  685. you know,

  686. so I just walked up

  687. and I'm like,

  688. I'm sorry,

  689. you know,

  690. everything I've sinned

  691. is terrible

  692. and I need forgiveness.

  693. But,

  694. you know,

  695. if we take Peter

  696. as a case,

  697. Peter denied Jesus,

  698. right?

  699. He denied Jesus,

  700. he denied Jesus.

  701. Then Jesus came back

  702. and pulled him aside

  703. and forgave Peter

  704. in a personal way

  705. and Jesus knew

  706. what was going on

  707. in Peter's heart.

  708. I think that's true

  709. of all of us

  710. when we come,

  711. when we come to repent.

  712. We're not repenting

  713. generically,

  714. right?

  715. So,

  716. what do you think

  717. was on the top

  718. three bullets

  719. of the typical person

  720. that was one

  721. of the 3,000

  722. that turned

  723. and said,

  724. yeah,

  725. I'm in,

  726. I want it?

  727. No super right

  728. or wrong answer here.

  729. I just want to think

  730. together about it.

  731. Maybe some of them

  732. have been in the crowd

  733. cheering on the crucifixion

  734. or witnessing it

  735. and agreeing with it

  736. and needed to repent

  737. for that level

  738. of participation.

  739. because,

  740. because they had it wrong,

  741. right?

  742. So,

  743. that repentance means

  744. I was cheering

  745. but I had it wrong

  746. but what part,

  747. what parts do you think

  748. they're like,

  749. well,

  750. we had this wrong,

  751. I had this specific

  752. thing wrong?

  753. going my own way,

  754. choosing to do

  755. what I think

  756. is right

  757. instead of

  758. listening for God's

  759. will and plan.

  760. And it sort of goes

  761. to Satan

  762. offering Christ

  763. the kingdom

  764. and that's

  765. what everybody wants,

  766. the whole kingdom

  767. of the world.

  768. mindless.

  769. Yes.

  770. Yes.

  771. And related to it

  772. as somebody's already said,

  773. you know,

  774. my theological

  775. understanding

  776. of the Messiah

  777. which,

  778. you know,

  779. was a true part

  780. of the picture

  781. for most Jews,

  782. you know,

  783. the conquering king

  784. he will be.

  785. But,

  786. repenting from

  787. my theology

  788. to saying

  789. okay,

  790. now I get it.

  791. Jesus

  792. was right

  793. and

  794. things he was

  795. calling me

  796. to understand

  797. differently.

  798. That's right.

  799. Now,

  800. I'm ready to

  801. believe.

  802. Yes.

  803. Certainly there

  804. would have been

  805. more concrete sins.

  806. Yes.

  807. Yes.

  808. Yes.

  809. Yes.

  810. Yes.

  811. Yes.

  812. Yes.

  813. Yes.

  814. Yes.

  815. In the

  816. Israelite

  817. society.

  818. Yes.

  819. Yes.

  820. nationalistic pride

  821. sense of superiority. We are the Jews

  822. and

  823. Romans shouldn't be ruling over us. This isn't

  824. right, but just the sort of superiority

  825. complex that they all have.

  826. Yep.

  827. Yep, because

  828. right after

  829. you repent and get brought

  830. into the community of

  831. believers, right after that

  832. Jesus, well

  833. in the passage that we just read, Jesus

  834. gets asked, so when are we going to start

  835. really kicking some

  836. bottom

  837. and

  838. he's like

  839. you don't worry about that. I've got a

  840. job for you to do. And job number one

  841. is to go to the Samaritans

  842. and

  843. preach the gospel to them and then many

  844. of them receive the gospel.

  845. The Samaritans. It's like

  846. that would have been

  847. that's a huge

  848. evidence to them that their whole world

  849. their whole system, their whole paradigm

  850. is they've got to

  851. and I think the point that I think is so

  852. helpful for us to see is that

  853. they had to receive that

  854. from God. They had to be willing to

  855. say, okay, teach us

  856. because that

  857. didn't happen. I don't think that happened

  858. overnight. I think that

  859. happened over

  860. time. It's like

  861. and the key

  862. thing is the trust and faith

  863. to not come off the

  864. when God

  865. says, okay, now accept this.

  866. Now accept that these dietary laws are not

  867. everything.

  868. Now accept this. Now accept that

  869. circumcision, this thing that you thought was just

  870. baked in

  871. is not going to be

  872. absolutely necessary. It's hard for us to feel

  873. the weight of some of these things,

  874. but

  875. the underlying

  876. heart disposition

  877. is

  878. that we are willing to

  879. receive

  880. what God has

  881. for us both in

  882. the forgiveness

  883. of our own sins and the establishing us

  884. as children, but also in

  885. God's call on us

  886. and the mission that he gives us

  887. that I feel

  888. sure folks did not understand

  889. or

  890. it just required

  891. submission to God.

  892. I do think the more

  893. to your point, Peter, I do think that

  894. there was a way that

  895. that Jewish folks typically were

  896. viewing their own

  897. standing before God

  898. with regard to their moral

  899. to the law

  900. and that

  901. this outpouring of the spirit

  902. brought much more of a

  903. sermon on the mount

  904. style

  905. verdict

  906. where people

  907. were waking up to the fact that

  908. oh, wait a minute, I need a divine

  909. savior

  910. to bridge a divine gap

  911. that's caused by my

  912. by my sin

  913. which was yet another

  914. thing that had to be received by faith

  915. by

  916. by people

  917. okay, so

  918. I do want to

  919. make sure that we

  920. hit and observe

  921. this sort of good news

  922. that some

  923. Peter mentions here

  924. at the tail end of the passage

  925. if you look at me

  926. back in verse

  927. let's go back to verse 38

  928. Peter said to them

  929. repent and be baptized

  930. every one of you

  931. in the name of

  932. Jesus Christ

  933. for the forgiveness

  934. of your sins

  935. and you will receive

  936. the gift of the Holy Spirit

  937. and then he says

  938. for the promise

  939. is for you

  940. and for your children

  941. and for all

  942. who are far off

  943. everyone

  944. whom the Lord

  945. our God

  946. calls to himself

  947. so what's the promise?

  948. why that terminology?

  949. yes

  950. I'm sorry

  951. a son

  952. to become a son

  953. to become

  954. a child of God

  955. okay

  956. do we see

  957. any specifics

  958. here in the text

  959. that we might

  960. hang on

  961. the

  962. that terminology

  963. of promise

  964. forgiveness

  965. of sins

  966. and the Holy Spirit

  967. if the forgiveness

  968. of sins

  969. and receiving

  970. the Holy Spirit

  971. does not come

  972. by God's promise

  973. to give it to us

  974. if we repent

  975. what are some

  976. other channels

  977. that we might

  978. imagine

  979. that getting right

  980. with God

  981. would come through?

  982. yes

  983. okay

  984. so

  985. this is not

  986. you know

  987. this is Christianity 101

  988. but

  989. Christianity 101

  990. is pretty crazy

  991. awesome

  992. and profound

  993. yes

  994. I think

  995. that

  996. we don't

  997. want to

  998. lose

  999. the impact

  1000. of Peter

  1001. saying

  1002. right here

  1003. right after

  1004. he told

  1005. right after

  1006. he told

  1007. people

  1008. you literally

  1009. crucified

  1010. the son

  1011. of God

  1012. I mean

  1013. could you

  1014. imagine

  1015. the weight

  1016. of that

  1017. if you

  1018. had seen

  1019. that

  1020. with your

  1021. own

  1022. eyes

  1023. and then

  1024. he says

  1025. this forgiveness

  1026. that's being

  1027. offered to you

  1028. is being offered

  1029. to you

  1030. by God's

  1031. promise to

  1032. deliver it

  1033. by

  1034. in the name

  1035. of Jesus

  1036. and it's another

  1037. way of saying

  1038. free of charge

  1039. to you

  1040. because

  1041. you could

  1042. never

  1043. make yourself

  1044. right with God

  1045. and that's the

  1046. whole point

  1047. of why

  1048. Jesus

  1049. had to

  1050. be crucified

  1051. and be

  1052. the high

  1053. priest

  1054. right

  1055. yes

  1056. yes

  1057. yes

  1058. yep

  1059. and so

  1060. this is

  1061. the

  1062. new covenant

  1063. this is

  1064. one of the

  1065. first things

  1066. of the new

  1067. covenant

  1068. that was the

  1069. old covenant

  1070. you might

  1071. long

  1072. I will

  1073. be your

  1074. God

  1075. and the

  1076. covenant

  1077. if you

  1078. remember

  1079. there's

  1080. the animal

  1081. that was

  1082. split

  1083. and the

  1084. participants

  1085. of the

  1086. covenant

  1087. had to

  1088. clean

  1089. and let

  1090. it be

  1091. to me

  1092. like this

  1093. animal

  1094. that

  1095. break the

  1096. covenant

  1097. well

  1098. they had

  1099. written

  1100. covenant

  1101. they had

  1102. been

  1103. but this

  1104. is the

  1105. this is

  1106. the new

  1107. covenant

  1108. so

  1109. when

  1110. people

  1111. hear this

  1112. the promise

  1113. was

  1114. was it

  1115. it was

  1116. to the

  1117. Hebrews

  1118. it was

  1119. to my

  1120. children

  1121. it was

  1122. to

  1123. you

  1124. people

  1125. the people

  1126. who might

  1127. choose to

  1128. draw

  1129. the promise

  1130. and now

  1131. it says

  1132. it's for

  1133. you

  1134. and your

  1135. children

  1136. and all

  1137. who are

  1138. far off

  1139. Samaritans

  1140. yes

  1141. so this

  1142. is another

  1143. breaking of

  1144. that political

  1145. paradigm

  1146. that identification

  1147. of wait

  1148. we are

  1149. God's

  1150. people

  1151. oh

  1152. now

  1153. who is

  1154. the other

  1155. party

  1156. of the

  1157. house

  1158. Jesus

  1159. established

  1160. it

  1161. and the

  1162. other party

  1163. is you

  1164. and for

  1165. those who

  1166. believe

  1167. your children

  1168. and all

  1169. who are

  1170. far off

  1171. yes

  1172. yes

  1173. yes

  1174. thank you for

  1175. bringing that

  1176. up because

  1177. um

  1178. the that

  1179. language of

  1180. the promise

  1181. i think would

  1182. absolutely have

  1183. been

  1184. a

  1185. i think his

  1186. peter's hearers

  1187. would absolutely

  1188. have picked up

  1189. on and

  1190. connected that

  1191. promise back

  1192. to the

  1193. messiah

  1194. and um

  1195. it's

  1196. it's uh

  1197. they were

  1198. expecting a new

  1199. covenant

  1200. right of course

  1201. they had like the

  1202. deal that they

  1203. had an old

  1204. covenant

  1205. they keep

  1206. their part

  1207. yes

  1208. they thought

  1209. that that

  1210. was it

  1211. and then

  1212. it would be

  1213. that

  1214. and they

  1215. would be

  1216. you know

  1217. yes

  1218. whatever it

  1219. would be

  1220. this is the

  1221. right order

  1222. of God

  1223. and us

  1224. and oh

  1225. wait

  1226. there's

  1227. this is

  1228. different

  1229. and it's

  1230. not just

  1231. for

  1232. Hebrew

  1233. blood

  1234. yes

  1235. and never

  1236. and really

  1237. it never

  1238. was

  1239. um

  1240. uh

  1241. but

  1242. but no

  1243. that's a

  1244. great point

  1245. um

  1246. any other

  1247. thoughts or

  1248. questions

  1249. peter

  1250. i just

  1251. um

  1252. i think

  1253. complimented

  1254. that idea

  1255. it was

  1256. really good

  1257. really key

  1258. point

  1259. um

  1260. i think

  1261. um

  1262. the promise

  1263. there's a

  1264. promised land

  1265. associated with

  1266. the promise

  1267. right there's

  1268. still a

  1269. an earthly

  1270. inheritance

  1271. i think

  1272. that

  1273. doesn't

  1274. it seems

  1275. doesn't seem

  1276. like it's

  1277. totally being

  1278. being um

  1279. dismissed

  1280. by peter

  1281. right so

  1282. peter is

  1283. peter

  1284. peter is not

  1285. saying

  1286. peter is not

  1287. spiritualizing

  1288. the promised

  1289. land right

  1290. and he's

  1291. actually not

  1292. not

  1293. saying

  1294. there is

  1295. no promised

  1296. land here

  1297. anymore

  1298. because i

  1299. think very

  1300. much present

  1301. in their

  1302. minds is

  1303. is there's

  1304. a there's

  1305. a

  1306. to the

  1307. land

  1308. flowing with

  1309. milking

  1310. honey

  1311. you know

  1312. this is

  1313. the this

  1314. is the

  1315. inheritance

  1316. that we

  1317. have as

  1318. sons

  1319. right

  1320. um

  1321. this is

  1322. this is

  1323. part of

  1324. the promises

  1325. this thing

  1326. this this

  1327. shalom

  1328. this heavenly

  1329. kingdom

  1330. that is

  1331. coming

  1332. and is

  1333. given to

  1334. us

  1335. right

  1336. so i

  1337. just think

  1338. it's

  1339. important

  1340. to notice

  1341. that peter

  1342. is not

  1343. debunking

  1344. that or

  1345. saying no

  1346. that's not

  1347. a real

  1348. thing we're

  1349. not we're

  1350. not moving

  1351. there he's

  1352. just saying

  1353. that promised

  1354. land is

  1355. for everyone

  1356. yes um

  1357. and i do

  1358. think in the

  1359. context of

  1360. talking about

  1361. the resurrection

  1362. talking about

  1363. who jesus is

  1364. in these

  1365. these different

  1366. roles and

  1367. then having

  1368. the the

  1369. reality of

  1370. the resurrection

  1371. just flat

  1372. out preached

  1373. you know to

  1374. affirm who

  1375. jesus is

  1376. and then

  1377. connecting

  1378. that to

  1379. forgiveness

  1380. of sins

  1381. and then

  1382. referring to

  1383. the promise

  1384. i do think

  1385. the promise

  1386. is multi-dimensional

  1387. so i i i

  1388. would say

  1389. um that

  1390. um that's

  1391. that topic

  1392. is like

  1393. obviously

  1394. a large

  1395. topic um

  1396. and that

  1397. i would agree

  1398. that it's not

  1399. an abrogation

  1400. of older

  1401. promises but

  1402. but the c

  1403. but there's a

  1404. pointing going

  1405. on that

  1406. the promised

  1407. land ultimately

  1408. is going to

  1409. be all

  1410. of god's

  1411. people restored

  1412. with god

  1413. forever in

  1414. in heaven

  1415. right um

  1416. so um

  1417. other thoughts

  1418. or questions

  1419. i don't know

  1420. if um

  1421. what

  1422. whatever heaven

  1423. means right

  1424. what was the

  1425. understanding

  1426. and we

  1427. do we need

  1428. to get

  1429. back to

  1430. what the

  1431. situation

  1432. is

  1433. doing

  1434. or even

  1435. what ours

  1436. is

  1437. we don't

  1438. know

  1439. yeah

  1440. go ahead

  1441. we're going

  1442. there all

  1443. right let's

  1444. open it up

  1445. heaven is a

  1446. christian

  1447. president

  1448. oh my

  1449. goodness

  1450. yes it's

  1451. already

  1452. passed we

  1453. had jimmy

  1454. quarter

  1455. so heaven

  1456. uh the bible

  1457. tells us some

  1458. things about

  1459. it but it

  1460. is beyond

  1461. our clear

  1462. comprehension

  1463. what that

  1464. would be like

  1465. the picture is

  1466. so much bigger

  1467. than we

  1468. realized the

  1469. plan is so

  1470. much bigger

  1471. than we

  1472. realized um

  1473. but what i

  1474. really wanted

  1475. to say

  1476. uh uh you

  1477. talked about

  1478. the shout

  1479. yes um and

  1480. i believe for

  1481. you know the

  1482. women at the

  1483. tomb and the

  1484. disciples you

  1485. know and

  1486. thomas you

  1487. know seeing

  1488. the wounds of

  1489. jesus and his

  1490. hands inside

  1491. you know that

  1492. came across as

  1493. a big shout

  1494. um often in

  1495. our lives we

  1496. hear the we

  1497. only hear the

  1498. echoes yes

  1499. of the

  1500. shell um

  1501. and jesus i

  1502. think maybe

  1503. made reference

  1504. to that when

  1505. he said

  1506. blessed are

  1507. you thomas

  1508. you know you

  1509. believe see

  1510. but more

  1511. blessed are

  1512. those you

  1513. know who

  1514. won't see

  1515. and who

  1516. won't hear

  1517. the full

  1518. volume shout

  1519. you know but

  1520. just echoes

  1521. yes of that

  1522. um and so

  1523. as people just

  1524. hear echoes we

  1525. really do

  1526. the you

  1527. know the

  1528. full

  1529. church and

  1530. and all the

  1531. things god

  1532. has provided

  1533. you know since

  1534. the shout

  1535. you know to

  1536. reinforce those

  1537. echoes for us

  1538. and to help

  1539. us at those

  1540. tough times

  1541. um

  1542. um what i was

  1543. saying before

  1544. about not being

  1545. clear i think

  1546. two pictures

  1547. of where god

  1548. wants us to

  1549. be by the

  1550. time this

  1551. life is over

  1552. is like

  1553. joe who

  1554. you know

  1555. was really

  1556. struggling with

  1557. his theology

  1558. and what he

  1559. expected to

  1560. happen in

  1561. life and

  1562. his this

  1563. great

  1564. disappointment

  1565. uh and

  1566. god apparently

  1567. never gives

  1568. him an

  1569. answer as

  1570. i read it

  1571. you know why

  1572. this has

  1573. happened to

  1574. him joe

  1575. certainly there's

  1576. no hint that

  1577. joe learns

  1578. about satan

  1579. you know

  1580. conversation with

  1581. god and

  1582. their bet

  1583. so to speak

  1584. on whether

  1585. somebody

  1586. would be

  1587. good

  1588. even when it

  1589. doesn't seem

  1590. good for him

  1591. to be good

  1592. anymore you

  1593. know good for

  1594. goodness sake

  1595. uh

  1596. but he does

  1597. like you said

  1598. get the person

  1599. of jesus or

  1600. get the person

  1601. of god at the

  1602. end and that's

  1603. enough for him

  1604. even though he

  1605. doesn't get the

  1606. explanation he

  1607. has some idea

  1608. that there's so

  1609. much more going

  1610. on here that i

  1611. have a clue

  1612. about so i

  1613. just have to

  1614. trust the

  1615. lord uh and

  1616. jesus in in

  1617. his life on

  1618. earth you know

  1619. as far as his

  1620. first life you

  1621. know he ends

  1622. up dead on the

  1623. cross uh

  1624. but as a human

  1625. being those

  1626. difficult times

  1627. transformed him

  1628. with regard to

  1629. his human nature

  1630. i believe

  1631. and to the

  1632. man you know

  1633. god wanted him

  1634. to be and the

  1635. kind of person

  1636. he wants us to

  1637. be so we

  1638. have to live

  1639. uh knowing

  1640. there's so much

  1641. more to the

  1642. picture we just

  1643. see a little bit

  1644. of it and we

  1645. just have to

  1646. trust god to

  1647. do a time

  1648. plan

  1649. we have to

  1650. yeah we have

  1651. to tune our

  1652. we have to tune

  1653. our heart to

  1654. the places where

  1655. god is shouting

  1656. the loudest

  1657. um we have

  1658. two sacraments

  1659. in protestant

  1660. christianity one

  1661. is baptism and

  1662. one is

  1663. communion communion

  1664. is a picture

  1665. of the broken

  1666. body of jesus

  1667. and it is a

  1668. food that if

  1669. you go without

  1670. you will starve

  1671. and die and

  1672. it is also a

  1673. picture of the

  1674. blood of god

  1675. himself that

  1676. has been shed

  1677. for us

  1678. and here's

  1679. maybe we'll

  1680. just close with

  1681. this i think

  1682. this is god

  1683. has raised jesus

  1684. from the dead

  1685. he has established

  1686. and affirmed him

  1687. in every way

  1688. possible and

  1689. then he's given

  1690. us a tangible

  1691. method to say

  1692. don't forget

  1693. this thing

  1694. let it be the

  1695. thing that

  1696. trumps

  1697. and drowns out

  1698. some of these

  1699. other things

  1700. i know

  1701. that you're on

  1702. a pilgrimage

  1703. i didn't give

  1704. everyone else the

  1705. answers

  1706. you're not having

  1707. all the answers

  1708. frankly i might

  1709. just add

  1710. it's impossible

  1711. that we would

  1712. have all the

  1713. answers

  1714. it's ridiculous

  1715. i mean even

  1716. with human

  1717. reason we could

  1718. take a step

  1719. back and go

  1720. who do we

  1721. how could we

  1722. possibly imagine

  1723. that we're going

  1724. to understand

  1725. god's sovereignty

  1726. and man's free

  1727. will

  1728. how could we

  1729. even possibly

  1730. think that if

  1731. god tried to

  1732. explain the dual

  1733. nature of christ

  1734. to us

  1735. that we would

  1736. understand it

  1737. instead what

  1738. he's given us

  1739. is a shout

  1740. from heaven

  1741. that these

  1742. things are true

  1743. and you need

  1744. to trust me

  1745. and you need

  1746. to rest in

  1747. that

  1748. and you need

  1749. to prioritize

  1750. the conversations

  1751. inside your

  1752. heart along

  1753. the lines of

  1754. what i've said

  1755. is most important

  1756. i'm not saying

  1757. that's easy

  1758. but that's

  1759. what i think

  1760. is a good

  1761. takeaway from

  1762. for us from

  1763. this um

  1764. from looking

  1765. at the

  1766. resurrection

  1767. in this

  1768. passage

  1769. so

  1770. let's close

  1771. there

  1772. um

  1773. and i'll

  1774. pray for us

  1775. our father

  1776. in heaven

  1777. we

  1778. praise you

  1779. for

  1780. your mighty

  1781. acts of

  1782. salvation

  1783. that you

  1784. have clearly

  1785. demonstrated

  1786. there is

  1787. no

  1788. confusion

  1789. salvation

  1790. about your

  1791. gospel

  1792. help us

  1793. to believe

  1794. and help us

  1795. to receive

  1796. what you have

  1797. for us

  1798. in jesus

  1799. help us to

  1800. receive jesus

  1801. as merciful

  1802. savior that

  1803. paid for all

  1804. of our sins

  1805. and help us

  1806. to enthrone him

  1807. on our hearts

  1808. and to submit

  1809. and to submit

  1810. to him as

  1811. king

  1812. and help us

  1813. to see this

  1814. world rightly

  1815. and to not

  1816. be rattled

  1817. by all

  1818. the

  1819. small

  1820. things of

  1821. this life

  1822. that sometimes

  1823. bring into

  1824. question

  1825. um

  1826. your character

  1827. but father

  1828. may we fix

  1829. our eyes

  1830. on jesus

  1831. and may we

  1832. be filled

  1833. with his

  1834. love

  1835. by your

  1836. spirit
