  1. Again, I want to extend a welcome to you and particularly those of you who are here visiting

  2. for graduation weekend.

  3. We are glad that you are able to join us this morning.

  4. You know, trajectory is an important thing.

  5. I don't know if you're a fan.

  6. I know this is dating me, but if you haven't seen it, it's Oscar worthy.

  7. Apollo 13 is a great movie with Tom Hanks.

  8. And for those of you who are younger, pull it out of some archive and go watch it.

  9. One of the things, it's about this tragedy of Apollo 13 and how the launch created a

  10. problem with the mission and how they sought to rescue the astronauts and bring them home.

  11. And in the midst of the crisis that was happening in Houston as they were trying to solve multiple

  12. problems of failing systems and failing vehicles and limited resources, one of the things they

  13. realized was that if they didn't get their trajectory right, as they sought to take this group of

  14. men flying through space in this little piece of metal around the moon and bring it, slingshot

  15. it back to earth, if they didn't get the trajectory right, they would be lost.

  16. It's graduation weekend.

  17. And for some of you, this is a time of transition.

  18. For all of us, the question of the trajectory of our lives is always an important one.

  19. The Westminster Catechism gives us an answer to the question, what is the trajectory of our

  20. lives as God designed it?

  21. The chief end of humanity is that we would glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

  22. If I might translate that into 21st century language, the whole purpose that we are here

  23. is that we would focus our lives on the worship and display of God's glory in our lives.

  24. We are here for God.

  25. But friends, we know how easy it is for us to not do that, don't we?

  26. Think back over your last week.

  27. How much was God the center of your life in your everyday comings and goings, wakings and

  28. sleepings, working and playing, recreating?

  29. We don't treat God the way He deserves.

  30. We don't make Him the proper focal point of our trajectory of our lives.

  31. We often diminish Him and make Him less than He truly is.

  32. We often ignore Him or dismiss Him when it's inconvenient.

  33. Often we don't trust Him, perhaps because of our past disappointments, perhaps because

  34. of our fear of future uncertainties.

  35. Sometimes for those who have grown up in church, we become familiar with God and in becoming

  36. familiar, we diminish Him.

  37. Sometimes we make God about us.

  38. And we think that God is there to make us happy and to serve our purposes and to make our lives

  39. great.

  40. As we look at a passage this morning in Exodus 20, we're continuing in our series in the book

  41. of Exodus.

  42. And as we look at this passage this morning, I want you to know that as we think about these

  43. things, I don't stand before you as one who knows the answers or who has done this perfectly.

  44. In fact, this week has been a struggle for me because I realize how much I need this message

  45. and this word as well as you.

  46. But if you would, turn with me in your Bibles to Exodus 20, page, I forgot, 61 in the Pew Bibles

  47. if you need to look at those.

  48. We're going to begin a two-week series on the Ten Commandments, which is probably a very well-known

  49. part of the Bible.

  50. Well, you've probably heard them before, so we're going to read them again in just a minute.

  51. But remember where this comes in the story.

  52. In Exodus, in chapters 1 through 18, there is this grand story of deliverance.

  53. God has come, and with a mighty hand and with great works, He has shown His power to deliver

  54. His people.

  55. And not only to deliver His people from slavery in Egypt, but to deliver them into His own

  56. possession and in His own care as He has now delivered them from Egypt and has led them

  57. through the wilderness, providing for them in ways that miraculously showed His commitment

  58. to not only deliver them, but to sustain them as His people.

  59. And so He brings us, then the story brings us to the foot of Mount Sinai.

  60. And in chapter 19, if you were here with Greg last week, we explored the question, what does

  61. it mean to be God's people?

  62. What does it mean to look at Him and to come to Him on His own terms and to understand the

  63. pattern of grace and law that He calls us to be His people by His grace and to live according

  64. to His instructions?

  65. We come to chapter 20 and the beginning of the instruction of the giving of the law.

  66. We'll continue to explore this as we look at it in the chapters in the weeks to come.

  67. But let me quote a great Bible commentator who says this about the Ten Commandments just

  68. to orient our thoughts a little bit about the law before we jump into our passage.

  69. He says this,

  70. This is the way we are to think of the Ten Commandments, not as cramping restrictions on a fullness

  71. of life that we might otherwise have enjoyed, but as the very gateway to the fullness we seek.

  72. As God gives us the law, what He's doing is instructing us on how to live as His people,

  73. how to live and to flourish under His rule and under His.

  74. But what that means is that we live according to the patterns and according to the current

  75. of His created purposes for us and His redemptive purposes for us.

  76. And so as we receive the law, we receive it hopefully not as a restriction, but as instruction

  77. to teach us who don't know God as well as we ought, how we ought to live as people who

  78. do know God.

  79. So that's where we are as we come to Exodus chapter 20.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  80. We're going to focus this morning on the first four commandments, but I'm going to read a good

  81. part of the chapter for us to get the context.

  82. So let's read Exodus chapter 20 together.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  83. And God spoke all these words saying, I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the

  84. land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

  85. You shall have no other gods before me.

  86. You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven

  87. above or that is in the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth.

  88. You shall not bow down to them or serve them.

  89. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the

  90. children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing steadfast

  91. love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

  92. You shall not take the Lord, the name of the Lord your God in vain.

  93. For the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

  94. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

  95. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord,

  96. your God.

  97. On it you shall not do any work.

  98. You or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your livestock

  99. or the sojourner who is within your gates.

  100. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested

  101. on the seventh day.

  102. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

  103. Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your

  104. God is giving you.

  105. You shall not murder.

  106. You shall not commit adultery.

  107. You shall not steal.

  108. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

  109. You shall not covet your neighbor's house.

  110. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his

  111. ox or his donkey or anything that is your neighbor's.

  112. Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the

  113. trumpet and the mountains smoking, the people were afraid and trembled and they stood far off

  114. and said to Moses, you speak to us.

  115. We will listen.

  116. But do not let God speak to us lest we die.

  117. And Moses said to the people, do not fear, for God has come to test you that the fear

  118. of him may be before you and that you may not sin.

  119. The people stood far off while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.

  120. And the Lord said to Moses, thus you shall say to the people of Israel, you have seen for

  121. yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven.

  122. You shall not make gods of silver to be with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.

  123. An altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your

  124. peace offerings, your sheep and your oxen.

  125. And in every place where I cause my name to be remembered, I will come to you and bless you.

  126. If you will make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones, for if you wield your tool

  127. on it, you profane it.

  128. And you shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness be not exposed on it.

  129. Now these are the rules that you shall set before them.

  130. Let's pray.

  131. Lord, we thank you for your word.

  132. We thank you that you have not left us to grasp at seeking to understand you on our own wisdom

  133. or by our own imaginations.

  134. But God, you have revealed yourself and you have spoken to us so that we might know what kind

  135. of a God you are.

  136. And Lord, we pray this morning that you would give us ears to hear and hearts to receive

  137. your word.

  138. Lord, that your spirit would be at work amongst us as we look into this word together.

  139. We pray in Jesus' name.

  140. Amen.

  141. Amen.

  142. To be God's people is to make him truly first in everything in our lives.

  143. Truly first in our hearts and truly first in the pattern of our lives.

  144. This is the main idea of the first four commandments that we're going to look at.

  145. If you look at the ten commandments, it's fairly clear there are ten of them.

  146. There are actually ten words technically as they're described.

  147. And it's very easy to split them up.

  148. The first four are about our vertical relationship with God primarily.

  149. And then the second six are more about our horizontal relationship with one another.

  150. And yet all of them are about what does it mean that we are God's people?

  151. He's giving instructions.

  152. These are principles, foundational concepts of what it means to be God's people.

  153. So we're going to spend a few minutes this morning looking at the first four commandments.

  154. And I'm going to lump them together.

  155. We're going to start first by looking at commandments one and two.

  156. And seeing that being God's people means making God first in our hearts.

  157. That is, the thing that we worship, the thing that we love the most,

  158. the thing that we set our heart upon is to be God himself.

  159. Look with me again.

  160. God says, you shall worship no other gods before me.

  161. You shall make no images for my worship.

  162. And if you think about the context that God was speaking this word into,

  163. think about what the Israelites had known for 400 years.

  164. They had lived in Egypt, a land full of graven images,

  165. a land full of idols, of statues that were bowed down to

  166. and worshiped for various things in the transactional nature of ancient religion

  167. where you offered to a particular image, a particular God,

  168. a particular act of worship, and he gives you something that you want.

  169. Fertility, long life, healing, crops, children, success in battle.

  170. And God spoke this word knowing that these people were going to enter into the promised land

  171. where similarly the Canaanite religions would be characterized by a similar kind of idolatry.

  172. And God comes and says, if you are to know me and to worship me right,

  173. you must do it differently than those people do.

  174. And recognize, too, that God isn't simply saying to Israelites,

  175. hey, I'm your God, everything else is excluded.

  176. You can't build those statues and bow down to them and worship other gods.

  177. But he's also saying you can't worship me by using statues and images as well.

  178. And I don't know about you, I didn't think this week,

  179. you know, I wonder if I should just build a statue.

  180. You know, life is kind of hard.

  181. My worship, my life with God, my relationship is a little dry.

  182. I think I'll build a statue so it'll help me to worship.

  183. It's not a common impulse in our modern culture, is it?

  184. Right?

  185. But recognize how much it was for the people of Israel.

  186. For 12 chapters later, what will they do as they sit at the foot of Mount Sinai,

  187. as God reveals himself in these very words to Moses?

  188. What do they do?

  189. They make a golden calf.

  190. Why?

  191. Not to worship some other god, to worship this god.

  192. They think God's given us all this bounty.

  193. Let's make an image so that we can worship this god.

  194. God says, no, you may not do that.

  195. Why does God care so much?

  196. Well, first of all, as we see in verse 5, he says, I am a jealous god.

  197. I want your worship to be for me alone.

  198. This is where the images of citizenship and marriage come in as analogies for how we relate to God.

  199. What spouse wants to share the affection of their partner with another?

  200. What country says, sure, you could be a citizen of our country and five others.

  201. You can fight in their army, work in their government.

  202. It doesn't matter.

  203. It's not a big deal.

  204. Now, in our fallen world today, we might start to think, well, okay, we might hedge our bets on some of that

  205. because all those institutions seem pretty fallen.

  206. But in their ideal, in what they were meant to be, in what they were made to be,

  207. God is saying, I want you to be wholly mine.

  208. And it's not based on a jealous grasping.

  209. It's not God seeking to simply control his people.

  210. But it's based on the grace that he has already shown him.

  211. Look back with me at verse 2 of chapter 20.

  212. Do you see what he says?

  213. Because I have redeemed you.

  214. Because I have brought you out of the land of slavery.

  215. I have rescued you to be mine.

  216. Worship me.

  217. Worship me alone.

  218. And he's really serious about this.

  219. You see in verses 6 and 7 that there's a result if you don't do this.

  220. And for those of you who read this the way I read it the first time and think,

  221. well, that doesn't seem fair.

  222. God's just extending punishment from generation to generation for no good thing.

  223. I want you to read the verse again carefully.

  224. The end of verse 5.

  225. Visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children of those who hate me.

  226. The point here is not that God is going to punish you because your grandfather hated God

  227. and you are trying to love God and you are still reaping those consequences.

  228. The point here is that you will be punished as you are a part of a generation

  229. that refuses to worship God and rejects him.

  230. And yes, we know that these things are often passed down from father to son,

  231. from generation to generation, from parent to child.

  232. And so it may be that the apples don't fall far from the tree

  233. and therefore God's judgment will.

  234. But recognize that what God is saying here is,

  235. if you are going to be my covenant people,

  236. I really expect you to be committed to this.

  237. I really expect you to be wholehearted in it.

  238. Because what I have done is called you into a covenant relationship with me.

  239. Because I love you.

  240. And I want to show my steadfast love to you for thousands of generations.

  241. Friends, we know that our hearts don't do this very well.

  242. As John Calvin said, our hearts are idol factories.

  243. Human culture, ever since the fall in the Garden of Eden,

  244. has created other things to worship other than God.

  245. We confuse the distinction between creator and creation.

  246. And rather than trying to worship an unseen God,

  247. which can be challenging sometimes,

  248. we worship a seen God by making idols out of them.

  249. And if they're not physical idols that we shape with our hands and bow down to,

  250. they're idols of our hearts.

  251. Things that we look to, to be our provider, to be our protector,

  252. to be our justification, to be our identity,

  253. our careers, our families, our successes.

  254. And we cling to these things.

  255. But the God of the Bible is one who has come and said,

  256. I am a spirit.

  257. You cannot see me, but you can know me.

  258. Because I am a God who has revealed myself in my words.

  259. Think about that.

  260. As God is meeting with his people on this mountain,

  261. he is manifesting his majesty through great signs and wonders.

  262. But there is no manifestation of God himself.

  263. What there is, is words.

  264. God gives us words to know him.

  265. God allows us to worship him and to know who he is

  266. because he speaks to us.

  267. And friends, we know that God in his graciousness knows our weakness.

  268. And in the fullness of time,

  269. the word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  270. And we have beheld his glory.

  271. The glory as only the son of the father,

  272. full of grace and truth.

  273. Friends, we know today as we gather

  274. that the God of the Israelites in Exodus 20

  275. was the God who came in Jesus Christ

  276. to be our savior and our redeemer,

  277. to work a greater redemption for us

  278. and to make a greater people of God.

  279. The fulfillment of all that the story in Exodus points to

  280. will come in Jesus.

  281. And so, friends, this morning as we look at these first two,

  282. have no other gods before me.

  283. Do not worship any other thing.

  284. I simply want to ask you,

  285. what do you worship?

  286. What is the thing on your lips most often?

  287. Where do you run in times of trouble?

  288. What do you trust in when everything else falls away?

  289. What do you rejoice and exult in on your best days?

  290. Friends, God is meant to be the answer

  291. to all of those questions in our lives.

  292. He wants us to experience the Copernican revolution in our lives

  293. whereby we as the self are unseated

  294. from the center of our solar system

  295. and God is put in place.

  296. It's the center of gravity

  297. and the one who is the life-giving force.

  298. As we relate to him rightly,

  299. we find our place in the universe.

  300. This is what God has called us to,

  301. to make him our God above all other things.

  302. So if the first two commandments tell us that,

  303. to love God with all of our heart

  304. and be wholehearted in this God-centered life

  305. that he's called us to,

  306. the next two commandments help us make it practical

  307. in very real ways.

  308. Look with me in verses seven and following in chapter 20.

  309. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain

  310. for the Lord will not hold him guiltless

  311. who takes his name in vain.

  312. What's in a name?

  313. Your reputation, your significance,

  314. your lineage, your identity.

  315. We live in a world where names are cheap,

  316. where presidential debates can descend into name-calling

  317. and cheap words.

  318. But throughout history and certainly in the scriptures,

  319. a name was the badge of who you were.

  320. It was your reputation.

  321. It was your person.

  322. It was your character.

  323. In fact, the New Testament talks about

  324. the word glory or weightiness

  325. to be connected with a person

  326. and a person's name.

  327. And when God says this,

  328. he says,

  329. you may not call me your God

  330. and you may not claim to be my people

  331. if you are frivolous or empty

  332. in the way that you use my name.

  333. Now, for most of you,

  334. and for me too,

  335. I grew up in church.

  336. What does the third commandment mean?

  337. Well, you don't curse.

  338. And you don't use God's name when you curse.

  339. That's sort of the simple,

  340. and you know what?

  341. That's right.

  342. That's exactly right.

  343. We should never use God's name

  344. simply because we're frustrated or angry

  345. because we want to call down judgment on someone else.

  346. But this commandment is much more than that.

  347. This commandment is to say,

  348. if you are going to say that you are God's people,

  349. you are taking up the name of this God

  350. and you are saying,

  351. this is who I am.

  352. This is the family that I have belonged to.

  353. Again, the marriage analogy,

  354. I am joining in with you

  355. and I am taking your name

  356. and I am being yours fully and completely.

  357. we have hitched our wagon to him

  358. and we will follow him to the end of the road.

  359. This is what it means to be God's covenant people

  360. and therefore to take his name seriously

  361. is to not use it in an empty way in our lives,

  362. to not use it without substance.

  363. Friends, we live in a culture today in America

  364. where there are,

  365. depending on where you're from,

  366. depending on what part of America you're in,

  367. there are parts of America

  368. where Christian is a social category.

  369. There are parts of America

  370. where Christian is a political category.

  371. But friends,

  372. we must understand that when the Bible talks about Christians,

  373. it is those who have identified

  374. with the name of Jesus Christ.

  375. And therefore,

  376. we must not take his name lightly in how we live.

  377. We must not be afraid

  378. to identify with him publicly

  379. and to say,

  380. yes,

  381. I am one who has been bought

  382. by the blood of Jesus Christ.

  383. I am one who has been saved

  384. by this Savior.

  385. Even when you may be misunderstood,

  386. even when you may be rejected,

  387. even when you may,

  388. it may cost you much.

  389. Friends,

  390. the third commandment

  391. joins us.

  392. It tells us

  393. that we are to take up that name

  394. and to live according to it.

  395. And that in our words,

  396. we are to speak reverently

  397. and joyfully

  398. and gladly

  399. and worshipfully

  400. about God.

  401. Not only

  402. are we to worship God,

  403. not only

  404. are we to make him

  405. first in our words,

  406. but we are also

  407. to make him

  408. first in the way

  409. that we use our time.

  410. As we look at verses

  411. 8 through 11,

  412. we see the fourth commandment.

  413. To take the Sabbath,

  414. to take one day

  415. out of the week

  416. and to set it aside.

  417. Set it aside

  418. from the regular work.

  419. And we've already seen this

  420. in the story.

  421. Do you remember

  422. when God gave manna

  423. in chapter 16,

  424. 17,

  425. 17,

  426. chapter 17,

  427. when God gave manna,

  428. he instructed them,

  429. six days you go out

  430. and gather it.

  431. And on the sixth day,

  432. gather extra

  433. because on the seventh day,

  434. you won't need to

  435. because I will have

  436. provided for you.

  437. And there's all this,

  438. oh,

  439. and if you try to save it

  440. on other days,

  441. it'll go bad.

  442. And if you go out

  443. and do it on that day,

  444. it'll go bad.

  445. God gave all sorts

  446. of specifics,

  447. but we've already

  448. seen this happen.

  449. And in that story,

  450. we see God

  451. asking his people

  452. a couple of questions.

  453. Do you think

  454. that you know

  455. better than the Lord

  456. how to provide

  457. for yourself?

  458. Do you think

  459. you know better

  460. than God

  461. what you need?

  462. For the Sabbath rest

  463. is a rest

  464. from our regular work

  465. so that we might

  466. be renewed

  467. personally

  468. and spiritually

  469. in our worship

  470. of God

  471. so that we might

  472. take one day

  473. out of the week

  474. and trust

  475. that God

  476. will provide

  477. for us

  478. as we take

  479. a break

  480. from our regular

  481. work.

  482. And friends,

  483. it's not a break

  484. so that we can

  485. play Fortnite

  486. for 14 hours.

  487. Okay?

  488. This is not

  489. a Sabbath.

  490. Nor is it

  491. doing hobbies

  492. while your spouse

  493. takes care

  494. of everybody

  495. else all day.

  496. But it is

  497. setting aside

  498. your regular work

  499. as best as you can,

  500. as much as possible

  501. so that you

  502. can focus

  503. on the Lord

  504. and remember

  505. his goodness,

  506. enjoy his creation,

  507. take a nap,

  508. sing songs,

  509. be with friends.

  510. Now look,

  511. I know some of you

  512. are in medical

  513. residency

  514. and you don't

  515. have control

  516. of your life.

  517. You don't get

  518. to say,

  519. I can't work

  520. on Sunday

  521. right now.

  522. Okay?

  523. I get it.

  524. Some of you

  525. are moms

  526. of newborns.

  527. Where's the

  528. Sabbath rest

  529. in that,

  530. right?

  531. I mean,

  532. seriously.

  533. Okay?

  534. But here's the thing.

  535. The pattern

  536. is still

  537. the same.

  538. And for the rest

  539. of us,

  540. we really have

  541. no excuse.

  542. Do you really

  543. think you know

  544. better than the Lord

  545. what you need

  546. to do

  547. to be successful,

  548. to accomplish?

  549. So what does

  550. it look like?

  551. Unplug.

  552. Unplug from your

  553. devices,

  554. unplug from your

  555. regular schedule,

  556. unplug from your

  557. phone,

  558. turn off your

  559. email notifications,

  560. get out into

  561. creation if you

  562. can.

  563. Be with God's

  564. people as much

  565. as you can.

  566. Friends,

  567. if nothing else,

  568. and I say this

  569. particularly to those

  570. of you who are

  571. graduating and

  572. moving on,

  573. observe the

  574. Sabbath by making

  575. it a commitment

  576. to be with God's

  577. people every week.

  578. Go to church.

  579. It's not optional.

  580. It's a part of

  581. Sabbath observance

  582. to be with God's

  583. people.

  584. And you're going

  585. to go out into

  586. a world that is

  587. going to trample

  588. all over that.

  589. And your work

  590. group is going

  591. to say,

  592. can you come in

  593. on 9 o'clock

  594. on Sunday mornings?

  595. And your ultimate

  596. Frisbee game

  597. down the street

  598. is going to say,

  599. hey,

  600. we're playing

  601. at 10,

  602. why don't you

  603. come over?

  604. And your sports

  605. teams,

  606. as you have kids,

  607. are going to say,

  608. oh,

  609. we've got a

  610. weekend tournament

  611. and the game's

  612. at 8.30 and we

  613. got to be there.

  614. And so on and so

  615. forth.

  616. We live in a

  617. culture that no

  618. longer recognizes

  619. Sunday as a

  620. separate.

  621. You're going to

  622. have to be ready

  623. to be different

  624. and stand out

  625. from your peers

  626. to take that

  627. rest.

  628. Some of you

  629. work in labs

  630. where you think,

  631. I can't tell

  632. my PI that.

  633. I'll get fired.

  634. There are

  635. challenging things

  636. we have to face.

  637. I will not say

  638. you have to,

  639. therefore,

  640. not work on

  641. Sundays.

  642. The New Testament

  643. does not tell us

  644. explicitly that this

  645. is what all

  646. believers must do.

  647. But it is a

  648. principle based

  649. in the very

  650. fabric of

  651. creation itself

  652. that God

  653. created the world

  654. in six days

  655. and then he

  656. rested.

  657. He didn't do it

  658. because he was

  659. tired.

  660. He didn't do it

  661. because he needed

  662. a break

  663. or he was

  664. overwhelmed.

  665. He did it for

  666. us.

  667. He did it so

  668. that we would

  669. enter into a

  670. rhythm of rest.

  671. And so that we

  672. would know,

  673. as Deuteronomy

  674. will point out,

  675. that the Sabbath

  676. is also the

  677. freedom from

  678. work,

  679. the work that

  680. we do as we

  681. seek to justify

  682. ourselves in the

  683. world by how

  684. well we do,

  685. how well we

  686. succeed,

  687. and how well

  688. we progress

  689. in the world.

  690. So friends,

  691. this is what God

  692. calls us to in

  693. the first four

  694. commandments.

  695. To truly be

  696. God's people

  697. is to make him

  698. first in all

  699. things,

  700. in our hearts,

  701. in our worship,

  702. in our identity,

  703. in our words,

  704. in our use of

  705. time,

  706. and to honor him

  707. as God in all

  708. of these things,

  709. to make him the

  710. center around

  711. which our lives

  712. find their

  713. orbit.

  714. And of course,

  715. we know that the

  716. problem with this

  717. is that we do

  718. this so poorly,

  719. don't we?

  720. Like the church

  721. in Ephesus in

  722. Revelation 2,

  723. we wander from

  724. our first love.

  725. We grow cold

  726. in our affection.

  727. We grow weary

  728. in our obedience.

  729. We want so much

  730. to be accepted

  731. by others

  732. that we lose

  733. sight of what

  734. God has called

  735. us to in his

  736. people.

  737. Our efforts to

  738. be law keepers

  739. will fail.

  740. And if we try

  741. really hard,

  742. it will crush

  743. us.

  744. But as we do

  745. that, it brings

  746. us, in fact,

  747. to the very

  748. sweetest part

  749. of what this

  750. passage in

  751. Exodus points

  752. us to.

  753. Because it points

  754. us ahead to

  755. another time,

  756. to another

  757. covenant, to

  758. another promise.

  759. We read it

  760. earlier in

  761. Ezekiel 36.

  762. this covenant

  763. prepares the

  764. world to know

  765. that we can't

  766. be law keepers

  767. on our own.

  768. And that God

  769. is going to have

  770. to intervene and

  771. do something.

  772. And God himself

  773. and Ezekiel

  774. promised that he

  775. would.

  776. And in the

  777. person of Jesus,

  778. he did.

  779. He came,

  780. and Jesus came

  781. to be the law

  782. keeper for us.

  783. To perfectly

  784. worship God

  785. and to love him

  786. above all things.

  787. And as he lived

  788. this life of

  789. perfect obedience,

  790. he did this for

  791. us.

  792. And then he did

  793. that, not only

  794. that, but then

  795. he offered

  796. himself in

  797. our place to

  798. take the penalty

  799. for our sin that

  800. separates us from

  801. God.

  802. So that by his

  803. life and death

  804. and resurrection,

  805. we might be

  806. God's new

  807. people in a

  808. new covenant

  809. relationship with

  810. God based not

  811. on our works,

  812. but based on

  813. his gracious

  814. work for us

  815. in Christ.

  816. And with this

  817. new covenant

  818. comes one

  819. wonderful things.

  820. He gives us

  821. a new heart

  822. that can now

  823. love God in

  824. ways that we

  825. never could

  826. apart from him.

  827. He gives us

  828. his spirit to

  829. live in us

  830. so that we

  831. actually know

  832. the laws and

  833. that we long

  834. to please God

  835. because God's

  836. spirit lives

  837. within us.

  838. Friends,

  839. this is what

  840. the Ten

  841. Commandments

  842. points us

  843. towards.

  844. It points us

  845. towards Christ

  846. who did all

  847. these things

  848. for us so

  849. that we might

  850. be God's

  851. people.

  852. So that we

  853. might be like

  854. the Thessalonian

  855. church at the

  856. end of chapter

  857. one who

  858. turned from

  859. idols to

  860. serve the

  861. true and

  862. living God

  863. and to

  864. live our

  865. lives for

  866. his glory.

  867. This is the

  868. trajectory and

  869. this is our

  870. hope.

  871. We pray this

  872. will be true

  873. for you,

  874. for me,

  875. today.

  876. Let's pray

  877. together.

  878. Lord, thank

  879. you for this

  880. word.

  881. Lord, thank

  882. you that you

  883. have created

  884. us for

  885. yourself and

  886. though we so

  887. often fail,

  888. Lord, you

  889. graciously draw

  890. us back again

  891. and again.

  892. Lord, I pray

  893. for those this

  894. morning, Lord,

  895. that you may

  896. have convicted

  897. that they

  898. haven't made

  899. their life

  900. about you.

  901. Lord, they

  902. have made

  903. empty the

  904. name of

  905. Christ and

  906. the work of

  907. Christ on the

  908. cross for

  909. them.

  910. I pray, Lord,

  911. that in this

  912. conviction that

  913. they would turn

  914. to you in

  915. their need and

  916. find grace and

  917. know, Lord,

  918. that they would

  919. know salvation

  920. is in Jesus.

  921. Lord, I pray

  922. for all of us

  923. that you might

  924. prick our

  925. consciences to

  926. see the places

  927. in our lives

  928. where we don't

  929. put you first,

  930. where we have

  931. made other

  932. things more

  933. important, where

  934. we have

  935. worshipped other

  936. gods, where we

  937. have bowed down

  938. to other things

  939. to play God

  940. in our lives.

  941. Lord, help us

  942. to repent of

  943. those and,

  944. Lord, in

  945. turning from

  946. them to find

  947. you to be the

  948. God who has

  949. delivered us

  950. from slavery,

  951. from slavery to

  952. sin, rescued us

  953. and called us to

  954. be your people.

  955. By the grace of

  956. Jesus, we pray.

  957. Amen.
