  1. So, this morning, let's start, if you have a Bible, if you don't have a Bible, it'll

  2. be helpful for you to have one, and there are some extras sitting in the bookshelf over

  3. there.

  4. But let's start with Psalm 95 this morning.

  5. Psalm 95, in some Christian traditions, is prayed every morning as part of morning prayer,

  6. and it happens to fit really well with what we're looking at this morning.

  7. So, which one did you say?

  8. Psalm 95.

  9. O come, let us sing to the Lord.

  10. Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

  11. Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving.

  12. Let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise, for the Lord is a great God, and

  13. a great King above all gods.

  14. In his hand are the depths of the earth.

  15. The heights of the mountains are his also.

  16. The sea is his, for he made it.

  17. And his hands formed the dry land.

  18. O come, let us worship and bow down.

  19. Let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.

  20. For he is our God.

  21. And we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.

  22. Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as on the day at

  23. Massa in the wilderness, when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof

  24. that they had seen my work.

  25. For forty years I loathed that generation and said, they are a people who go astray in their

  26. heart, and they have not known my ways.

  27. Therefore I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest.

  28. This psalm sings praises to the God of Israel, who is the rock of their salvation.

  29. And this morning we're going to be looking at the fundamental moment, the fundamental event

  30. of Israel's salvation in the Exodus.

  31. But then in the latter half of the psalm, you have this bit, today if you hear his voice,

  32. do not harden your hearts, as Israel did in the wilderness.

  33. And we're going to be looking at the wilderness years as well, the time when Israel went astray

  34. in their heart and did not know God's ways.

  35. So, this summer, through the whole summer in this Sunday school class, we're looking

  36. at a sort of big, broad, thirty-thousand-foot view picture of the Old Testament, and especially

  37. the narrative of the Old Testament.

  38. Because it's one big story.

  39. And sometimes we might know individual pieces of that story, but it's helpful for us to be

  40. able to put the whole thing together to see how Jesus is the climax of the whole story

  41. of the Old Testament.

  42. And today, we're looking at Israel's exodus from Egypt and their time wandering in the

  43. wilderness before they enter the Promised Land.

  44. And since, if you've been coming to the sermons, you would know that we are going through Exodus

  45. right now upstairs.

  46. So, we're going to, it's really going to be a thirty-thousand-foot view.

  47. Because if you come to the sermons, you will be getting a sort of verse-by-verse look at

  48. Exodus.

  49. So, I'm a handout.

  50. I have a very, it can't get any briefer than this, outline of the Torah, of the first five

  51. books of the Bible.

  52. I put this on here just because we're going to be finishing up the narrative of the Torah

  53. this morning.

  54. We looked at Abraham's life last week, and that's all in the first half of Genesis.

  55. And then today, we're looking at Exodus.

  56. And Numbers has some of the story of Israel in the wilderness.

  57. And then Leviticus and Deuteronomy, it doesn't have so much narrative in it.

  58. It's mostly just legal codes.

  59. So, we're not really going to be looking at those books at all this summer.

  60. But first, talking about the Exodus from Egypt, where we left off last week, Israel is not

  61. in Egypt.

  62. Abraham is still wandering in the land that God had promised to give to his offspring.

  63. So, I just put down a few sort of citations there if you want to chart out the story of Abraham's

  64. family getting down into Egypt.

  65. We talked about Abraham and Sarah being the parents of Isaac last week, the promised child,

  66. the child that God had promised to Abraham.

  67. And God's promises and blessing to Abraham that we talked about so much last week are

  68. reiterated to Isaac in Genesis 26.

  69. And then they're reiterated to Jacob, the child of Isaac, in Genesis 32.

  70. So, we see this family line of promise, of blessing, emerging in Genesis.

  71. Which is God bringing about and continuing his promise to Abraham that his offspring, his

  72. family, would be the means by which God would bless the whole world.

  73. And that promise is reiterated to Abraham's children.

  74. Then there's the story of Jacob's child, Joseph, who was sold into Egypt as a slave.

  75. Then God raises Joseph to prominence, saving the land from famine.

  76. That's about 10 chapters in Genesis that we're just totally, we're mentioning but not looking at.

  77. And then in this one, I think it might be helpful to look at really briefly.

  78. If we can turn to Genesis 45.

  79. So, starting in verse 4, this is Genesis 45.

  80. Joseph is talking to his brothers years later after they had sold him into slavery,

  81. after Joseph rises to prominence in Egypt.

  82. So, starting, so Genesis 45, verse 4.

    Genesis 45:4

  83. Joseph said to his brothers, come near to me, please.

  84. And they came near.

  85. And he said, I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt.

  86. And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here.

  87. For God sent me before you to preserve life.

  88. For the famine has been in the land these two years.

  89. And there are yet five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest.

  90. And God sent me here before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to keep alive

  91. for you many survivors.

  92. So, it was not you who sent me here, but God.

  93. He has made me a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his house and ruler over the land of Egypt.

  94. Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord

  95. over all Egypt.

  96. Come down to me.

  97. Do not tarry.

  98. You shall dwell in the land of Goshen.

  99. And you shall be near me, you and your children and your children's children and your flock

  100. and all that you have.

  101. There I will provide for you.

  102. For there are yet five years of famine to come.

  103. So that you and your household and all that you have do not come into poverty.

  104. So, in this way, Israel ends up going down into Egypt.

  105. And at first, it's not, they're not enslaved at first, right?

  106. This is a good thing for them to be going to Egypt.

  107. And Joseph even says God sent him there.

  108. But just as God had told Abraham in Genesis 15, which I put on the page there,

  109. know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs

  110. and will be servants there.

  111. And they will be afflicted for 400 years.

  112. But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve.

  113. And afterward, they shall come out with great possessions, just as God had assured Abraham.

  114. So it happens.

  115. A pharaoh, a new pharaoh comes up in the beginning of Exodus, who doesn't know Joseph's family.

  116. And out of fear of that family that is increasing greatly, he enslaves them.

  117. And they are afflicted for 400 years, as God had told Abraham.

  118. And like I said, it's because it's the sermon series upstairs.

  119. I have just a few notes here, like a really broad view of the book.

  120. And on the second page, I have an outline of the book of Exodus,

  121. which might actually help you follow the sermons upstairs.

  122. You can place any particular sermon within the broader outline of the book.

  123. But in short, the book of Exodus starts with God calling Moses and saving Israel from slavery in Egypt through Moses.

  124. Then there's this, God brings them to Sinai and makes a covenant with them and gives them some laws.

  125. That's where we are upstairs right now.

  126. Then Israel fails, breaches the covenant, worships the golden calf, but God renews, restores the covenant.

  127. And even from this really, really broad outline of the book of Exodus,

  128. I think we can learn a lot about the life of faith just from that very basic structure of God saves Israel,

  129. God makes a covenant and gives them laws.

  130. Israel fails miserably, worships the golden calf, even while Moses is up on the mountain receiving laws and talking to God.

  131. And then God restores the covenant.

  132. I think from just that very broadest outline of the book, we can learn a lot about the life of faith.

  133. For one thing, just as God saved Israel from slavery in Egypt,

  134. God saves us, his people today, from a kind of slavery to sin and death.

  135. Jesus says in the Gospel of John, and I put these on the handout,

  136. Jesus describes sin as almost a kind of addictive behavior.

  137. If you engage in it, and we all do, you become enslaved to it in a sense.

  138. I can, I can, how many times have I, has a word come out of my mouth,

  139. an unkind, cruel word come out of my mouth before I even realize it?

  140. It's, it's, it's, it's as if I cannot help but do wrong to God and my neighbor.

  141. I, I am, in some sense, a slave to sin.

  142. And, and Jesus says that is, that is our condition.

  143. But he, the Son, sets us free, and we are free indeed.

  144. Um, so, there is that kind of correspondence, um, that, that we see in the life of faith

  145. between the Exodus and, and, um, us today.

  146. And then, this, this bit from Hebrews.

  147. Since, therefore, the children, uh, human beings, share in flesh and blood,

  148. the Son himself, likewise, partook of the same thing.

  149. Becoming flesh and blood, that is.

  150. That through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil.

  151. And deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

  152. Um, there, there is a, a sense in which we are slaves of, of death and the fear of death.

  153. Uh, that, uh, the, the, the fear of death limits what we are willing and able to do.

  154. Um, but Jesus, in defeating death,

  155. uh, frees us from that.

  156. To be able to serve him, uh, live for him, uh, and, and say with Paul,

  157. for me, to, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  158. Whether I, whether I live or die ultimately is not the thing that matters,

  159. but whether I belong to Jesus is the thing that matters.

  160. Uh, and I want to be part of what he is doing in the world.

  161. Um, for, to, to be this conduit of blessing, uh, to the whole world.

  162. Um, so just as God saved Israel from Egypt,

  163. so also Jesus saves us from, from a kind of, a kind of slaver.

  164. Um, and just as God saved Israel apart from anything they did beforehand,

  165. so also God saves us irrespective of what we've done.

  166. Uh, the, the law is not given to Egypt, right?

  167. So that big, broad outline of the book of Exodus,

  168. God doesn't tell, uh, God doesn't tell Israel how to live,

  169. uh, giving them commands to live by,

  170. until after he saved them from Egypt.

  171. Um, and it, and it's the same, it's the same way for us.

  172. We don't, Israel didn't have to earn their, their freedom from Egypt

  173. in the same way we don't have to earn our, uh, relationship,

  174. our freedom with God.

  175. Uh, by grace you have been saved through faith,

  176. and this is not your own doing.

  177. It is the gift of God, not a result of works,

  178. so that no one may boast.

  179. Um, so you see what I'm doing here.

  180. I'm looking for these correspondences between, uh,

  181. the book of Exodus, and it's, it's big, broad outline,

  182. and the life of the Christian.

  183. Um, because there is this, the, the, the,

  184. the big, broad outline of Exodus is a picture of,

  185. of salvation in Jesus.

  186. Um, and then just as God gave Israel his law at Mount Sinai,

  187. um, after, after saving them,

  188. God gives us direction on how to live.

  189. Uh, God expects us to, to live in a certain way

  190. after he's, you know, saved us from this kind of slavery

  191. and, and brought us into a relationship with himself.

  192. Uh, just going on, right, uh,

  193. so the previous thing that I read was Ephesians 2, 8, and 9.

  194. Very next verse, uh, we are his workmanship,

  195. God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,

  196. which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

  197. Uh, in the same way that Israel is expected to live in a certain way

  198. after God brings them out of slavery,

  199. so also God expects us to live in a certain way

  200. after, after God brings us into relationship with himself.

  201. Um,

  202. and then just as God forgives Israel

  203. and restores his covenant with them,

  204. after they fail miserably in, in, in worship of the golden calf,

  205. so also God forgives our sin

  206. and restores our relationship with him

  207. when we genuinely turn back to him in, in, in faith.

  208. Um, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves

  209. and the truth is not in us.

  210. If we confess our sin, he is faithful and just

  211. to forgive us our sins

  212. and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  213. Uh,

  214. so as, as, um,

  215. as we are, uh,

  216. going through the rest of the book of Exodus upstairs,

  217. I hope, I hope I'm not rehashing too much

  218. what, what our pastors have been saying

  219. in sermons so far.

  220. Um, but as we go through the rest of the book of Exodus,

  221. uh,

  222. it can be helpful for us to look for ways that,

  223. uh,

  224. the story of Israel in, in the Exodus is,

  225. is our story too.

  226. Um, which we should expect if we are,

  227. as, as we were saying last week,

  228. if we are Abraham's offspring,

  229. uh, then we should expect the story of Abraham's offspring

  230. to be our story too.

  231. Um,

  232. if, if you, uh,

  233. if you know this word,

  234. the, the approach that I'm doing there

  235. is called typology.

  236. If you've heard that word before,

  237. that's why I'm saying it

  238. just so you have something to,

  239. to grab onto.

  240. If you don't know that word,

  241. forget it.

  242. It doesn't really matter.

  243. It's a seminary word.

  244. Um,

  245. you don't,

  246. you don't need that to follow God.

  247. Um,

  248. so that,

  249. that's a super,

  250. I, like I said,

  251. the,

  252. I feel like I'm doing violence to the text

  253. by skimming that briefly through it.

  254. But, um,

  255. I don't,

  256. I don't want to steal,

  257. steal anything from the pastors upstairs,

  258. uh,

  259. and,

  260. and sort of belabor the point.

  261. Um,

  262. I want to spend most of our time

  263. on something we,

  264. we are not going to be talking about

  265. so much upstairs

  266. when we look through Exodus,

  267. and that's Israel's wilderness years.

  268. Um,

  269. but before we move on to that,

  270. uh,

  271. are there any thoughts,

  272. questions?

  273. Um,

  274. I don't think you can do Exodus too much.

  275. I mean,

  276. I thought you could come back to it

  277. probably several times in your life

  278. and come back to it

  279. and find more.

  280. There's,

  281. there's a lot here for us.

  282. Um,

  283. you're fine.

  284. You can't talk to us.

  285. Amen.

  286. All right.

  287. So,

  288. um,

  289. after Israel leaves

  290. Mount Sinai,

  291. uh,

  292. God sends them away,

  293. uh,

  294. into,

  295. into the land that he had promised Abraham

  296. all those years before.

  297. Uh,

  298. we were looking last week in Genesis,

  299. uh,

  300. God promised Abraham,

  301. I'm going to give your offspring this land

  302. that you're wandering about in.

  303. Well,

  304. now God's doing it.

  305. Uh,

  306. finally,

  307. after 400 years,

  308. God is,

  309. is taking Israel into this land.

  310. Um,

  311. and,

  312. it's,

  313. if we look,

  314. there's this verse in the beginning of Deuteronomy

  315. that tells us that

  316. it's only an 11 days journey.

  317. Um,

  318. the second verse of Deuteronomy,

  319. it's only an 11 days journey

  320. from Mount Sinai

  321. to the edge of the land

  322. that God had promised

  323. to give to them.

  324. Uh,

  325. but it takes Israel 40 years to get there.

  326. Uh,

  327. and you think,

  328. what gives?

  329. Well,

  330. it's because Israel is

  331. once again disobedient.

  332. Uh,

  333. and,

  334. and this entire time,

  335. so most of Israel's time in the wilderness,

  336. uh,

  337. is in,

  338. uh,

  339. is recorded in the book of Numbers.

  340. Um,

  341. in the,

  342. the Hebrew name for the book called Numbers.

  343. See,

  344. we call it Numbers

  345. because it begins with some census data

  346. and we think the whole book

  347. is just a bunch of numbers.

  348. It's,

  349. it's not,

  350. uh,

  351. it's,

  352. it's a story

  353. and,

  354. and the Hebrew name for it

  355. is actually a lot better.

  356. It means in the wilderness,

  357. uh,

  358. which is really what the book is about.

  359. Um,

  360. so most of this,

  361. most of the story is in the book of Numbers.

  362. Uh,

  363. and their whole time in the wilderness

  364. is characterized by disobedience.

  365. Uh,

  366. it didn't end with the golden calf.

  367. They grumble about lack of food and water.

  368. Uh,

  369. they grumble about,

  370. uh,

  371. the leadership of Moses and Aaron.

  372. Um,

  373. and then later on in,

  374. in Numbers 25,

  375. they worship the pagan god Baal,

  376. uh,

  377. which comes up again and again

  378. in the rest of the Old Testament.

  379. Um,

  380. but I want to focus on one incident in particular,

  381. uh,

  382. in Numbers 13 and 14

  383. that sort of captures,

  384. uh,

  385. the whole,

  386. um,

  387. that really captures the whole thing.

  388. It's,

  389. it's maybe the most striking incident

  390. of,

  391. uh,

  392. of Israel's disobedience in the wilderness.

  393. Um,

  394. and,

  395. once again,

  396. I think this shows us a great deal

  397. about,

  398. um,

  399. our life of faith.

  400. Uh,

  401. and that's,

  402. and that's the lens I,

  403. I want to,

  404. uh,

  405. bring to it.

  406. Um,

  407. and it's,

  408. it's quite a lot of text,

  409. so that's why I left a lot of time for it.

  410. So let's,

  411. uh,

  412. look at Numbers chapter 13.

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  413. Um,

  414. um,

  415. so by this point,

  416. they've gone on that 11 day journey.

  417. Israel has,

  418. uh,

  419. they're at the promised land.

  420. Um,

  421. and

  422. God tells Moses

  423. to send people

  424. into the land

  425. to check it out.

  426. Um,

  427. so let's start in,

  428. in,

  429. I'll start reading in verse 17.

  430. Um,

  431. all right,

  432. since this is Numbers chapter 13,

    Numbers 13 chapter mention

  433. I'm going to start in verse

  434. 17.

  435. Great.

  436. All right.

  437. Moses sent them

  438. to spy out the land of Canaan

  439. and said to them,

  440. go up into the Negev

  441. and go up into the hill country

  442. and see what the land is

  443. and whether the people

  444. who dwell in it

  445. are strong or weak,

  446. whether they are few or many

  447. and whether the land

  448. that they dwell in

  449. is good or bad

  450. and whether the cities

  451. that they dwell in

  452. are camps or strongholds

  453. and whether the land

  454. is rich or poor

  455. and whether there are

  456. trees in it or not.

  457. Be of good courage

  458. and bring some of the fruit

  459. of the land.

  460. Now the time

  461. was the season

  462. of the first ripe grapes.

  463. So they went up

  464. and spied out the land

  465. from the wilderness

  466. of Zin

  467. to Rehob

  468. near Lebo Hamath.

  469. They went up

  470. into the Negev

  471. and came to Hebron,

  472. Ahaman,

  473. Sheshai,

  474. and Talmai.

  475. The descendants

  476. of Anak were there.

  477. Hebron was built

  478. seven years before

  479. Zoan in Egypt.

  480. And they came

  481. to the valley of Eshkol

  482. and cut down

  483. from there

  484. a branch

  485. with a single cluster

  486. of grapes

  487. and they carried it

  488. on a pole

  489. between two of them.

  490. They also brought

  491. some pomegranates

  492. and figs.

  493. That place was called

  494. the valley of Eshkol

  495. because of the cluster

  496. that the people

  497. of Israel

  498. cut down from there.

  499. At the end

  500. of forty days

  501. they returned

  502. from spying out

  503. the land

  504. and they came

  505. to Moses

  506. and Aaron

  507. and to all

  508. the congregation

  509. of the people

  510. of Israel

  511. in the wilderness

  512. of Paran

  513. at Kadesh.

  514. They brought back

  515. word to them

  516. and to all

  517. the congregation

  518. and showed them

  519. the fruit of the land.

  520. They said to them,

  521. We came to the land

  522. to which you sent us.

  523. It flows with milk

  524. and honey

  525. and this is the fruit.

  526. However,

  527. the people who dwell

  528. in the land

  529. are strong

  530. and the cities

  531. are fortified

  532. and very large

  533. and besides,

  534. we saw the descendants

  535. of Anak there.

  536. The Amalekites

  537. dwell in the land

  538. of the Negev.

  539. The Hittites,

  540. the Jebusites

  541. and the Amorites

  542. dwell in the hill country

  543. and the Canaanites

  544. dwell by the sea

  545. and along the Jordan.

  546. But Caleb quieted

  547. the people

  548. before Moses

  549. and said,

  550. Let us go up

  551. at once

  552. and occupy it

  553. for we are well able

  554. to overcome it.

  555. Then the men

  556. who had gone up

  557. with him said,

  558. We are not able

  559. to go up

  560. against the people

  561. for they are stronger

  562. than we are.

  563. So they brought

  564. to the people

  565. of Israel

  566. a bad report

  567. of the land

  568. that they had spied out

  569. saying,

  570. The land

  571. through which

  572. we have gone

  573. to spy it out

  574. is a land

  575. that devours

  576. its inhabitants

  577. and all the people

  578. that we saw in it

  579. are of great height

  580. and there we saw

  581. the Nephilim,

  582. the sons of Amak

  583. who come from

  584. the Nephilim

  585. and we seemed

  586. to ourselves

  587. like grass humpers

  588. and so we seemed

  589. to them.

  590. Then all the congregation

  591. raised a loud cry

  592. and the people

  593. wept that night

  594. and all the people

  595. of Israel

  596. grumbled against

  597. Moses and Aaron.

  598. The whole congregation

  599. said to them,

  600. Would that we had died

  601. in the land of Egypt

  602. or that we had died

  603. in this wilderness.

  604. Why is the Lord

  605. bringing us into this land

  606. to fall by the sword?

  607. Our wives

  608. and our little ones

  609. will become a prey.

  610. Would it not be better

  611. for us to go back

  612. to Egypt?

  613. And they said

  614. to one another,

  615. Let us choose a leader

  616. and go back to Egypt.

  617. Then Moses and Aaron

  618. fell on their faces

  619. before all the assembly

  620. of the congregation

  621. of the people of Israel.

  622. And Joshua,

  623. the son of Nun,

  624. and Caleb,

  625. the son of Jephunneh,

  626. who were among those

  627. who had spied out the land,

  628. tore their clothes

  629. and said to all

  630. the congregation

  631. of the people of Israel,

  632. The land which we passed

  633. through to spy it out

  634. is an exceedingly good land.

  635. If the Lord delights in us,

  636. he will bring us

  637. into this land

  638. and give it to us.

  639. A land that flows

  640. with milk and honey.

  641. Only do not rebel

  642. against the Lord

  643. and do not fear

  644. the people of the land

  645. for they are bread for us.

  646. Their protection

  647. is removed from them

  648. and the Lord is with us.

  649. Do not fear them.

  650. Then all the congregation

  651. said to stone them

  652. with stones.

  653. But the glory of the Lord

  654. appeared at the tent

  655. of meeting

  656. to all the people of Israel.

  657. And the Lord said to Moses,

  658. How long will this people

  659. despise me?

  660. And how long will they

  661. not believe in me

  662. despite all of the signs

  663. that I have done among them?

  664. I will strike them

  665. with the pestilence

  666. and disinherit them

  667. and I will make of you

  668. a nation greater

  669. and mightier than they.

  670. But Moses said to the Lord,

  671. Then the Egyptians

  672. will hear of it.

  673. For you brought up

  674. this people in your might

  675. from among them.

  676. And they will tell

  677. the inhabitants

  678. of this land,

  679. They have heard

  680. that you, O Lord,

  681. are in the midst

  682. of this people.

  683. For you, O Lord,

  684. are seen face to face

  685. and your cloud

  686. stands over them

  687. and you go out before them

  688. in a pillar of cloud by day

  689. and a pillar of fire by night.

  690. Now if you kill this people

  691. as one man,

  692. then the nations

  693. who have heard your fame

  694. will say it is because

  695. the Lord was not able

  696. to bring this people

  697. into the land

  698. that he swore to give them,

  699. that he has killed them

  700. in the wilderness.

  701. And now please let

  702. the power of the Lord

  703. be great as you have promised,

  704. saying the Lord

  705. is slow to anger

  706. and abounding

  707. in steadfast love,

  708. forgiving iniquity

  709. and transgression,

  710. but he will by no means

  711. clear the guilty,

  712. visiting the iniquity

  713. of the fathers

  714. on the children

  715. to the third

  716. and the fourth generation.

  717. Please pardon

  718. the iniquity

  719. of this people

  720. according to the greatness

  721. of your steadfast love,

  722. just as you have forgiven

  723. this people

  724. from Egypt until now.

  725. Then the Lord said,

  726. I have pardoned

  727. according to your word,

  728. but truly as I live

  729. and as all the earth

  730. shall be filled

  731. with the glory of the Lord,

  732. none of the men

  733. who have seen my glory

  734. and my signs

  735. that I did in Egypt

  736. and in the wilderness

  737. and yet have put me

  738. to the test

  739. these ten times

  740. and have not obeyed my voice

  741. shall see the land

  742. that I swore

  743. to give to their fathers.

  744. And none of those

  745. who despise me

  746. shall see it.

  747. But my servant Caleb,

  748. because he has

  749. a different spirit

  750. and has followed me fully,

  751. I will bring into the land

  752. into which he went

  753. and his descendants

  754. shall possess it.

  755. Now, since the Amalekites

  756. and the Canaanites

  757. dwell in the valleys,

  758. turn tomorrow

  759. and set out

  760. for the wilderness

  761. by way of the Red Sea.

  762. And then God repeats

  763. in verse 28,

  764. As I live,

  765. declares the Lord,

  766. what you have said

  767. in my hearing

  768. I will do to you.

  769. Your dead bodies

  770. shall fall

  771. in this wilderness

  772. and of all your number

  773. listed in the census

  774. from 20 years old

  775. and upward

  776. who have grumbled

  777. against me,

  778. not one shall come

  779. into the land

  780. where I swore

  781. that I would

  782. make you dwell.

  783. So,

  784. the spies go into the land,

  785. they're told to be

  786. of good courage,

  787. but they come back

  788. in fear.

  789. They bring a bad report

  790. and their fear

  791. goes viral

  792. and the people

  793. want to even stone them,

  794. Caleb and Joshua,

  795. with stones

  796. for having faith

  797. in God.

  798. And God ends up saying,

  799. you ask to die

  800. in the wilderness

  801. and that's what's

  802. going to happen.

  803. It is a chilling narrative.

  804. And it characterizes

  805. really Israel's

  806. entire time

  807. in the wilderness.

  808. God saves them

  809. from Egypt,

  810. makes this covenant

  811. relationship with them

  812. and yet they fail

  813. repeatedly again

  814. and again

  815. and again

  816. and they hear,

  817. even though they're

  818. on the cusp

  819. of the land of promise,

  820. the fulfillment

  821. of all these promises

  822. to Abraham

  823. 400 years earlier,

  824. even so,

  825. they refuse to go in

  826. out of fear,

  827. really.

  828. And,

  829. like I've been asking,

  830. I want to ask

  831. of this text,

  832. what does it show us

  833. about our life

  834. of faith now?

  835. I think it's

  836. at least a few things.

  837. One is this,

  838. be of good courage.

  839. That's what Moses

  840. tells these spies

  841. right towards

  842. the very beginning.

  843. Are we making

  844. our decisions

  845. out of fear

  846. or based on faith

  847. in what God

  848. has promised us

  849. in scripture?

  850. Israel's disobedience

  851. here,

  852. which excludes them

  853. from the land,

  854. excludes that

  855. entire generation,

  856. their disobedience

  857. emerges from fear.

  858. So I think it's good

  859. for us to ask ourselves

  860. on occasion,

  861. what are you afraid

  862. of in life?

  863. Um,

  864. and I don't mean

  865. like spiders

  866. or snakes,

  867. you know,

  868. uh,

  869. or,

  870. uh,

  871. your closet

  872. when you leave it

  873. open and you're

  874. in bed and the lights

  875. are off.

  876. That,

  877. that's something

  878. for me.

  879. I don't mean that.

  880. Um,

  881. I,

  882. I mean,

  883. I mean the big

  884. things.

  885. Uh,

  886. afraid of being

  887. alone.

  888. Um,

  889. and yet,

  890. Jesus has promised

  891. to be with you

  892. to the end

  893. of the age.

  894. church and,

  895. and he's given

  896. you a family

  897. and,

  898. and brothers

  899. and sisters

  900. in,

  901. in the church.

  902. All,

  903. all of us

  904. adopted it.

  905. Uh,

  906. uh,

  907. financial insecurity.

  908. Um,

  909. you know,

  910. big,

  911. the big things,

  912. you know,

  913. um,

  914. the big things

  915. that shape how we,

  916. how we live our

  917. lives.

  918. Uh,

  919. what,

  920. what,

  921. what are we afraid

  922. of?

  923. And,

  924. and how might

  925. these fears

  926. lead in the same

  927. way to rebellion

  928. against God

  929. just as,

  930. just as it leads

  931. Israel to rebellion

  932. against God here.

  933. Israel was afraid

  934. that if they went

  935. into this land,

  936. these tremendous,

  937. uh,

  938. tremendously strong

  939. people in the land

  940. would,

  941. uh,

  942. would destroy them.

  943. And yet,

  944. they,

  945. they had seen

  946. God taking care

  947. of them,

  948. bringing them out

  949. of Egypt,

  950. and God had promised

  951. to give them the land.

  952. So,

  953. Caleb says,

  954. of course,

  955. if,

  956. if we,

  957. if we don't rebel

  958. against God,

  959. we'll certainly

  960. be able to go in.

  961. Um,

  962. as a side note,

  963. one might wonder,

  964. you know,

  965. driving them out

  966. of the land,

  967. this is very violent.

  968. Uh,

  969. well,

  970. Nick will be,

  971. uh,

  972. telling us all

  973. about that this morning.

  974. Uh,

  975. uh,

  976. and if this is

  977. something that troubles you,

  978. come back next week

  979. because we're talking

  980. about the book of Joshua.

  981. Um,

  982. we seemed to ourselves

  983. like grasshoppers,

  984. and so we seemed

  985. to them,

  986. um,

  987. the spies say.

  988. Uh,

  989. I,

  990. I think this shows us

  991. we need to,

  992. we need to understand

  993. ourselves

  994. and our circumstances

  995. not based on,

  996. on,

  997. uh,

  998. we need to interpret

  999. ourselves and our circumstances

  1000. based on

  1001. who God

  1002. has revealed himself

  1003. to be

  1004. and what he says

  1005. about us.

  1006. Uh,

  1007. and not the other

  1008. way around.

  1009. Um,

  1010. here,

  1011. Israel looks at

  1012. their circumstances

  1013. and says,

1014. this is such a scary,

  1015. disastrous situation.

  1016. We feel like grasshoppers.

  1017. Therefore,

  1018. uh,

  1019. then,

  1020. you know,

  1021. they project that

  1022. onto,

  1023. um,

1024. the people in the land.

1025. If you look at the

  1026. beginning of Joshua,

  1027. actually,

  1028. it's the other way,

1029. it's the other way around.

  1030. Uh,

1031. at the beginning of Joshua,

  1032. I put the Joshua 2.11.

  1033. Uh,

1034. the people in the land

  1035. are actually really scared

  1036. of Israel.

  1037. Uh,

  1038. it's,

  1039. it's not that

  1040. they seem like grasshoppers.

  1041. Um,

1042. it's that they were actually

  1043. really scared of them.

  1044. Uh,

  1045. yeah,

  1046. I,

  1047. I think,

  1048. um,

  1049. you know,

  1050. it's only,

1051. it's only Joshua and Caleb

  1052. who understood their,

  1053. their situation

  1054. and who they are

  1055. in,

  1056. in the Lord,

  1057. uh,

  1058. correctly.

  1059. Um,

1060. and so I think this,

1061. this text would have us

  1062. ask ourselves,

  1063. uh,

  1064. is,

1065. is our sense of self

  1066. in our,

1067. in our sense of our circumstances,

  1068. uh,

1069. based on what God says about us?

1070. Or is it overly inflated

  1071. or overly deflated

  1072. because of,

  1073. uh,

  1074. a fixation on self,

1075. a kind of prideful fixation

  1076. on ourselves

  1077. and what we're thinking

  1078. and feeling?

  1079. Uh,

  1080. God,

  1081. you know,

  1082. it,

  1083. God made you

1084. in his very own image,

  1085. uh,

1086. as we were talking about

  1087. a few weeks ago.

  1088. Uh,

1089. you are of inestimable value.

1090. If you belong to Jesus,

  1091. you,

  1092. you are a,

  1093. a,

  1094. a brother or sister

1095. of the very son of God,

  1096. right?

  1097. Uh,

  1098. there,

  1099. there's,

1100. having a sense of self

  1101. that is like,

  1102. well,

  1103. I am,

  1104. I am worthless

  1105. or I am nothing,

  1106. uh,

  1107. as,

1108. as so many of us

  1109. sometimes fall into,

  1110. uh,

  1111. is not really grounded

  1112. on,

  1113. on the truth.

  1114. It's not grounded

1115. on what God says about us.

1116. And if we have this sense of,

  1117. I,

  1118. I'm,

  1119. I'm the man

1120. and I'm better than everyone

  1121. around me,

  1122. uh,

  1123. well,

  1124. no,

  1125. you're a creature.

  1126. Uh,

  1127. you're not God.

  1128. You're,

  1129. you're a creature.

  1130. Um,

  1131. God made you.

  1132. Uh,

1133. you came from the dust

  1134. and from the dust

  1135. into the dust

  1136. you will return.

  1137. Uh,

  1138. so that's,

  1139. that's what I mean.

  1140. Are,

  1141. are we,

  1142. are we constructing our,

  1143. are we understanding ourselves,

  1144. um,

1145. in light of what God

  1146. says about us

  1147. or,

  1148. or,

  1149. uh,

1150. does it come just out of a,

  1151. uh,

  1152. a fixation on ourselves

  1153. and our own feelings?

  1154. Um,

1155. then perhaps the most chilling

  1156. line in this entire

  1157. bit that,

  1158. that I,

  1159. that I read here,

  1160. God says to Israel,

  1161. what you have said

  1162. and my hearing

1163. I will do to you.

  1164. Um,

  1165. Israel cries out,

1166. if only we had died

  1167. in Egypt

  1168. or in this wilderness.

  1169. And God says,

  1170. okay,

1171. if that's what you want,

  1172. this entire generation

1173. will die in this wilderness.

  1174. Uh,

  1175. ultimately,

1176. I think this teaches us

  1177. that God gives us

  1178. what we really want,

  1179. either God

  1180. or not God.

  1181. Um,

  1182. we see this dynamic

  1183. in Romans chapter one.

  1184. Uh,

  1185. there's this refrain

  1186. of God saying,

  1187. uh,

  1188. he,

  1189. he,

  1190. Romans one describes,

  1191. um,

  1192. the pagan world

  1193. that worships idols.

  1194. Uh,

  1195. and,

  1196. and there's this refrain

1197. of God gave them up.

  1198. Um,

  1199. they exchanged the glory

  1200. of the immortal God

  1201. for images

  1202. resembling mortal man

  1203. and birds

  1204. and animals

  1205. and creeping things.

  1206. Therefore,

  1207. God gave them up

1208. in the lust of their hearts

  1209. to one period.

  1210. Uh,

  1211. God

  1212. ultimately gives us

  1213. what we really want,

  1214. whether God

  1215. or not God.

  1216. Uh,

  1217. C.S. Lewis

  1218. has this,

  1219. has this great quote.

  1220. I actually,

  1221. I put a citation for it,

  1222. but I actually couldn't

  1223. track it down yesterday.

  1224. Um,

  1225. so,

  1226. forgive me.

  1227. Uh,

  1228. it's either from somewhere

  1229. in the great divorce

  1230. or from near Christianity

  1231. and I couldn't find it,

  1232. but it's great.

  1233. Uh,

1234. there are only two kinds

1235. of people in the end.

1236. Those who say to God,

  1237. thy will be done

1238. and those to whom God says

  1239. in the end,

  1240. thy will be done.

  1241. Um,

  1242. and so this week,

  1243. will we choose

  1244. to live for God

  1245. or for lesser things?

  1246. Uh,

1247. because God will say to us,

  1248. uh,

  1249. in the end,

  1250. thy will be done

  1251. and either it'll be,

  1252. uh,

  1253. our will to,

  1254. to walk with Jesus

  1255. and live for him

  1256. and love him

1257. and be loved by him.

  1258. Uh,

  1259. or,

  1260. or,

  1261. uh,

  1262. for things that ultimately

1263. in the grand scheme of things

  1264. don't,

  1265. don't really matter,

  1266. um,

  1267. in comparison.

  1268. Uh,

  1269. in Numbers 13 and 14,

  1270. what we just read

  1271. takes us through

1272. a challenging aspect of that.

  1273. Israel chooses not God.

  1274. Uh,

  1275. but then there's this,

  1276. uh,

  1277. in,

  1278. in Luke 11,

  1279. um,

  1280. this,

1281. this ask and it will be given to you,

1282. seek and you will find,

1283. knock and it will be opened to you.

  1284. Uh,

  1285. and,

  1286. and Jesus says,

  1287. uh,

  1288. if,

  1289. if human parents,

  1290. uh,

1291. like to give gifts to their children,

1292. how much more then will the heavenly father

1293. give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

  1294. Right?

  1295. So,

  1296. take heart,

  1297. right?

  1298. If,

  1299. if we want to,

  1300. to know,

  1301. God

  1302. and,

  1303. and know his spirit,

1304. he will give them to us.

  1305. Um,

  1306. so it's,

  1307. it's not just this,

1308. I'm not trying to just be super dour

  1309. with,

1310. with this passage in Numbers 13 and 14.

  1311. There's also this,

  1312. a beautiful,

  1313. amazing aspect of,

1314. if we want to be with God

  1315. and know God

  1316. and love God,

  1317. then God says,

  1318. yes,

  1319. great.

  1320. Um,

  1321. and,

  1322. uh,

1323. this last bullet that I put on here,

1324. and there's more than this,

  1325. surely,

  1326. of what this can,

1327. passage can teach us about the life of faith.

  1328. Um,

  1329. but God,

1330. God will accomplish his purposes for the church.

  1331. Uh,

1332. God accomplished his purposes for Israel.

  1333. Israel enters the land,

  1334. ultimately.

1335. This generation dies in the wilderness,

1336. wandering around for 40 years,

1337. but ultimately they enter the land,

1338. and we're going to be talking about that next week.

  1339. Um,

  1340. God had promised.

  1341. God,

1342. God follows through on his promises.

1343. And God will follow through on his promises for the church.

  1344. Nevertheless,

1345. an entire generation of Israelites excluded themselves,

  1346. disqualified themselves,

  1347. from,

  1348. from enjoying God's purposes,

  1349. uh,

1350. and from resting in the land.

  1351. Um,

1352. and in the same way,

  1353. uh,

1354. we can disqualify and exclude ourselves

1355. from God's purposes for the church

  1356. through faithless disobedience.

  1357. Um,

  1358. I,

1359. we started this morning looking at Psalm 95.

  1360. Uh,

1361. there's this bit in chapters,

1362. in Hebrews chapters three and four,

  1363. I put a citation here.

1364. I'm not going to read it now,

  1365. because it's really,

  1366. it's,

  1367. it's pretty dense,

1368. and it would take more than 10 minutes to really unpack it.

  1369. Um,

  1370. well,

  1371. that bit in Hebrews,

  1372. uh,

  1373. takes this,

  1374. um,

  1375. this time,

1376. this disobedience in the wilderness,

1377. and applies it to the church,

  1378. and says,

  1379. uh,

  1380. that,

  1381. um,

  1382. he,

  1383. he,

1384. he connects Israel's rest in the promised land,

1385. from which a whole generation of Israelites excluded themselves.

1386. And he connects that to the Christians' heavenly rest,

  1387. and says,

  1388. uh,

1389. therefore strive to enter that rest,

  1390. that,

1391. that you might not fall by the same sort of disobedience.

  1392. Um,

1393. and I think there's more to it than just this,

  1394. you know,

  1395. heavenly rest thing.

  1396. I,

1397. I don't want you to go away this morning and think,

1398. Alex is beating us over the head with a fear of hell or something.

  1399. Um,

  1400. because I,

  1401. I think there's,

1402. there's even more to it.

  1403. Um,

1404. God is doing amazing things in the world.

  1405. Uh,

1406. the gospel is bearing fruit and increasing in the whole world,

  1407. Paul writes in Colossians,

  1408. and,

1409. and how much more so today?

1410. Paul's world was pretty small.

1411. Our world is much bigger.

  1412. Uh,

  1413. I,

  1414. I'm reading a book right now,

  1415. um,

1416. for a seminary class about,

  1417. um,

  1418. the role of,

1419. of the American church in the global mission of the church.

  1420. And,

1421. and this author who has spent decades,

  1422. uh,

1423. doing missionary work around the world,

1424. and working with missionaries and pastors around the world,

1425. is telling these incredible stories about what God is doing around the world,

1426. what he's seen God do around the world.

  1427. Uh,

  1428. and,

1429. and it can be hard for us to,

  1430. to realize,

  1431. uh,

  1432. sometimes in,

  1433. in New Haven,

  1434. uh,

1435. the whole global scope of what God is doing.

  1436. Um,

  1437. he,

  1438. he talks about,

  1439. uh,

1440. walking down a street in Nigeria and,

1441. and just hearing worship and praise of God booming in the streets.

1442. You walk down the streets of New Haven,

  1443. you don't hear on,

  1444. on a Sunday morning,

  1445. uh,

1446. unless you're right on State Street,

  1447. right outside this church,

1448. you don't hear worship on Sunday mornings.

  1449. But,

1450. he talks about in Nigeria,

  1451. uh,

  1452. there,

  1453. there,

  1454. the,

  1455. the,

1456. the gospel is going out and increasing so much,

  1457. uh,

1458. that you just hear booming worship.

  1459. Of course,

1460. partly it's a PA system and speakers.

  1461. Uh,

1462. but partly there's just so many people coming to,

1463. to know and love the Lord.

  1464. Um,

  1465. he,

  1466. he talked to a,

  1467. a pastor friend.

  1468. I,

  1469. I'm not,

1470. I'm not going to go on and on and on,

  1471. but,

  1472. uh,

1473. this one I found really striking and challenging.

  1474. He,

  1475. he,

  1476. he taught,

  1477. he,

1478. he tells about a story.

1479. He was talking to a pastor friend of his in,

  1480. in Nigeria.

  1481. And,

  1482. uh,

  1483. he,

1484. he asked him how he,

1485. how he became a Christian.

  1486. He said,

  1487. well,

  1488. uh,

1489. God raised me from the dead by the hand of a missionary.

  1490. And so then,

  1491. then I became a Christian.

  1492. I'm like,

  1493. I'm reading this.

1494. I have to put the book down.

  1495. Like,

1496. do I believe that God is actually working like that?

  1497. I,

  1498. I don't know.

  1499. That's,

  1500. uh,

  1501. that's,

1502. that's something challenging for me.

  1503. But,

  1504. uh,

  1505. nevertheless,

  1506. I can,

1507. I can say God is doing things around the world and not just around the world,

1508. but here in New Haven too.

  1509. Um,

  1510. uh,

1511. pastor Matt sermon a couple of weeks ago,

  1512. uh,

1513. he was talking about all of these ways that,

  1514. um,

1515. that people in this very congregation are,

  1516. uh,

  1517. working to,

1518. to care for and include,

  1519. uh,

  1520. the marginalized and,

1521. and the poor and the outcast in,

  1522. in this city.

  1523. Uh,

  1524. in the,

1525. the church is being the church here,

  1526. here in New Haven.

  1527. Um,

  1528. and,

  1529. and,

  1530. and,

1531. and accomplishing what God wants for the church to be doing.

  1532. Uh,

  1533. will we,

  1534. through fear,

  1535. uh,

1536. and a faithless disobedience exclude ourselves from the,

1537. the joy of participating in,

1538. what God is doing in,

1539. in the world and in New Haven?

  1540. Um,

  1541. I,

  1542. I think,

  1543. I think that's,

  1544. uh,

1545. I think that's a question that Israel's wilderness years would have us ask

  1546. ourselves.

  1547. Um,

1548. will we lift up our eyes to see what God is doing?

  1549. Uh,

1550. just like how Jesus says to his disciples in John four,

1551. lift up your eyes and see the fields are white with harvests.

  1552. Uh,

1553. God is doing amazing things.

  1554. Will,

1555. will we participate or will we through fear?

  1556. Um,

  1557. stand on the sidelines.

  1558. Um,

  1559. all right.

  1560. Uh,

1561. that was much more pontificating this morning than,

  1562. than I actually,

  1563. um,

1564. so we have about five minutes.

  1565. Um,

  1566. so are there any,

  1567. uh,

  1568. questions,

  1569. comments,

  1570. concerns?

  1571. Um,

  1572. okay.

  1573. Okay.

  1574. Well,

  1575. um,

  1576. let,

  1577. let us,

  1578. God,

1579. you are the rock of our salvation and,

  1580. you saved your people,

1581. Israel from Egypt and you have saved us from sin and death and have brought us into this

1582. relationship with you to know you and love you.

  1583. Um,

  1584. um,

  1585. Lord,

  1586. help us to,

  1587. um,

1588. to be a part of,

1589. of what you are doing,

  1590. um,

  1591. through your people.

  1592. Um,

  1593. help us to,

  1594. uh,

  1595. put aside,

  1596. um,

  1597. fears and uncertainties,

  1598. uh,

  1599. about you.

  1600. Um,

1601. and today when we go upstairs and hear your voice,

  1602. um,

1603. keep us from hardening our hearts to your word,

  1604. um,

  1605. as it's being preached,

  1606. um,

  1607. but soften us,

  1608. um,

  1609. that we might,

  1610. um,

1611. be receptive in knowing and loving you and in,

  1612. in walking in,

1613. in the ways that you've,

  1614. um,

1615. appointed for us to do those good works that you have prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

1616. Through Christ our Lord we pray.

  1617. Amen.
