  1. Good morning, church.

  2. Would you turn with me to the book of Exodus, chapter 23.

    Exodus 23 chapter mention

  3. That's page 64 in the Pew Bible.

  4. We're going to look at verses 20 through 33.

  5. Exodus 23, page 64.

  6. So it's high school graduation season.

  7. Congrats, high school seniors.

  8. You know who you are.

  9. Graduation is a bit of a climactic experience, isn't it?

  10. You've come through to the other side of, in this case, high school.

  11. In victory, you're done.

  12. And there's no going back.

  13. Praise the Lord.

  14. It feels like you're on top of the world.

  15. It's a good feeling.

  16. But then, as the excitement dies down,

  17. you realize that there's still a long road ahead.

  18. College, work, dating, family, career,

  19. it all still looms out there,

  20. scary and big,

  21. and at times, overwhelming.

  22. Of course, that's not just for the high school graduates among us, right?

  23. That feeling hits us at a lot of moments in life.

  24. Retirement,

  25. birth of a child,

  26. taking a new job,

  27. moving to a new city.

  28. Well, in our text today,

  29. we meet the people of Israel

  30. at the foot of Mount Sinai.

  31. And they, too,

  32. have come through a similarly climactic experience.

  33. God has rescued them from slavery in Egypt.

  34. He's brought them through the Red Sea.

  35. He's now spoken to them at Sinai.

  36. They are on the top of the world.

  37. But there's still a long road ahead.

  38. After all,

  39. they're still in the wilderness.

  40. And they're not home yet.

  41. Now, at the end of Exodus 23,

  42. our text today,

  43. God concludes the formal covenant at Sinai.

  44. That is,

  45. here are the final terms of God's binding relationship,

  46. His covenant with His people.

  47. So, let's hear what God has to say to His people

  48. as they look out at the long road ahead.

  49. Exodus 23, starting in verse 20.

  50. Behold,

  51. I send an angel before you

  52. to guard you on the way

  53. and to bring you to the place that I have prepared.

  54. Pay careful attention to him

  55. and obey his voice.

  56. Do not rebel against him,

  57. for he will not pardon your transgression,

  58. for my name is in him.

  59. But if you carefully obey his voice

  60. and do all that I say,

  61. then I will be an enemy to your enemies

  62. and an adversary to your adversaries.

  63. When my angel goes before you

  64. and brings you to the Amorites

  65. and the Hittites

  66. and the Perizzites

  67. and the Canaanites,

  68. the Hivites

  69. and the Jebusites

  70. and I blot them out,

  71. you shall not bow down to their gods

  72. nor serve them

  73. nor do as they do,

  74. but you shall utterly overthrow them

  75. and break their pillars in pieces.

  76. You shall serve the Lord your God

  77. and He will bless your bread and your water

  78. and I will take sickness away from you.

  79. None shall miscarry or be barren in your land.

  80. I will fulfill the number of your days.

  81. I will send my terror before you

  82. and will throw into confusion

  83. all the people against whom you shall come

  84. and I will make all your enemies

  85. turn their backs to you

  86. and I will send hornets before you

  87. which shall drive out the Hivites,

  88. the Canaanites and the Hittites

  89. from before you.

  90. I will not drive them out

  91. from before you in one year

  92. lest the land become desolate

  93. and the wild beasts multiply against you.

  94. Little by little

  95. I will drive them out from before you

  96. until you have increased

  97. and possess the land

  98. and I will set your border

  99. from the Red Sea

  100. to the Sea of the Philistines

  101. and from the wilderness

  102. to the Euphrates

  103. for I will give the inhabitants

  104. of the land into your hand

  105. and you shall drive them out before you.

  106. You shall make no covenant

  107. with them and their gods.

  108. They shall not dwell in your land

  109. lest they make you sin against me

  110. for if you serve their gods

  111. it will surely be a snare to you.

  112. Let's pray together.

  113. Heavenly Father,

  114. we ask that you would grant us

  115. the grace of your Holy Spirit

  116. this morning

  117. to understand

  118. and to hear

  119. what you are saying to us

  120. through this word this morning.

  121. Lord, we want to understand this text

  122. in light of

  123. the big picture

  124. of what you've done for us in Christ.

  125. So help us to do that

  126. and help us not to be

  127. callous

  128. or feel fearful

  129. or hard-hearted

  130. as we come to you this morning

  131. but would you

  132. open up our minds

  133. and our ears

  134. and our hearts

  135. to be receptive

  136. to what you're saying

  137. to each of us this morning.

  138. Thank you for speaking to us, God.

  139. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  140. Amen.

  141. Well,

  142. the sum

  143. of the passage

  144. that we just read

  145. is that God

  146. is going to send an angel

  147. before his people Israel

  148. to settle them safely

  149. in the land of Canaan.

  150. And with this promise

  151. comes a warning.

  152. And the warning is

  153. don't worship

  154. their false gods.

  155. Serve me.

  156. Serve the Lord God alone.

  157. Now,

  158. the conquest

  159. of Canaan

  160. as it's sometimes called

  161. which eventually happens

  162. in the book of Joshua

  163. we have to keep in mind

  164. that that is a unique

  165. event

  166. in redemptive history

  167. in the Bible.

  168. All Jewish

  169. and Christian commentators

  170. agree

  171. that the conquest

  172. was a one-time

  173. command

  174. not meant to be repeated

  175. in other times

  176. or places.

  177. And that means

  178. we have to be careful

  179. as we come to this text today

  180. not to draw

  181. the wrong conclusions

  182. from a passage like this

  183. as we think about

  184. what it's saying to us.

  185. After all,

  186. we live in a different time

  187. in a different place

  188. in a different moment

  189. in redemptive history.

  190. With all that being said,

  191. however,

  192. that doesn't mean

  193. that there aren't

  194. some important lessons here

  195. to be learned

  196. for us.

  197. And as a window

  198. into that,

  199. think about

  200. where Israel is at

  201. in the story

  202. of salvation.

  203. put yourself back

  204. in their shoes

  205. imaginatively.

  206. Where are they?

  207. The Israelites

  208. are somewhere

  209. between Egypt

  210. and Canaan.

  211. Right?

  212. In other words,

  213. they've been redeemed

  214. but they're not yet home.

  215. They've been baptized

  216. through the Red Sea

  217. but they've not yet

  218. come to rest

  219. in the promised land.

  220. There are still,

  221. as God tells them here,

  222. many battles to come

  223. and many trials to face.

  224. Now,

  225. spiritually speaking,

  226. is not that true

  227. of us,

  228. the church,

  229. today?

  230. Christians, too,

  231. have been redeemed.

  232. We've been redeemed

  233. through Christ's death

  234. and resurrection.

  235. The church has been baptized

  236. through Christ's death

  237. and resurrection.

  238. But,

  239. brothers and sisters,

  240. we are not yet home.

  241. We are not yet glorified

  242. in the rest

  243. God has in store for us.

  244. There are still

  245. many spiritual battles

  246. to come

  247. and many trials to face.

  248. So,

  249. what do we learn here then

  250. for this road ahead?

  251. Well,

  252. the first resounding

  253. message that we hear here

  254. is that God

  255. goes before us,

  256. His people.

  257. Notice that in verse 20

  258. and verse 23,

  259. God tells Israel twice

  260. that His angel

  261. will go before you.

  262. Now,

  263. briefly,

  264. what are we to make

  265. of this angel figure?

  266. We've actually encountered

  267. this angel a couple of times

  268. so far in the book of Exodus.

  269. We haven't spent a lot of time

  270. thinking or talking

  271. about this figure.

  272. Back in chapter 3,

  273. the angel showed up

  274. at the call of Moses

  275. in the burning bush.

  276. And in chapter 14,

  277. when Israel was crossing

  278. the Red Sea,

  279. this angel of the Lord

  280. also shows up

  281. protecting them

  282. from the attacking

  283. Egyptian armies.

  284. Now,

  285. here we're told

  286. that this angel

  287. once again

  288. will guard them

  289. and bring them

  290. into the promised land.

  291. Now,

  292. angels in the Bible

  293. are spiritual beings

  294. who serve God's purposes

  295. of redemption.

  296. If you're a bit skeptical

  297. about this whole

  298. angel business,

  299. on the one hand,

  300. maybe you'll be comforted

  301. to know that the Bible's

  302. idea of angels

  303. couldn't be further

  304. from the popular imagination.

  305. You know,

  306. when you come to the Bible

  307. and you hear

  308. what angels are doing,

  309. you know,

  310. there's no fluffy wings.

  311. There's no fat,

  312. chubby little cherubs

  313. with bows and arrows.

  314. You know,

  315. there's no Victorian women

  316. in long flowing gowns

  317. looking like they might

  318. bring you some more milk

  319. to put you to bed.

  320. You know,

  321. it's not Michael Landon

  322. or that other lady

  323. from Touched by an Angel,

  324. you know,

  325. who looks like they might

  326. just be a really nice counselor,

  327. someone you'd want

  328. to knit a sweater with

  329. and share a cup of tea.

  330. Um,

  331. no,

  332. actually,

  333. that's not the biblical

  334. picture of angels at all.

  335. Um,

  336. angels are actually

  337. beings of magnificent power

  338. and beauty and glory.

  339. Um,

  340. and most people

  341. end up falling down

  342. and mistakenly

  343. worshiping them

  344. in the Bible.

  345. Now,

  346. what's more,

  347. if what the Bible

  348. says about angels

  349. is true,

  350. if you're wrestling

  351. with that,

  352. but think about it,

  353. if what the Bible

  354. says about angels

  355. is true,

  356. consider what that means

  357. about God's love

  358. for us.

  359. Um,

  360. and here's what I mean.

  361. If there is a God,

  362. and if that God

  363. has created

  364. not just a seen,

  365. but also an unseen world

  366. with creatures

  367. full of His beauty

  368. and power and joy

  369. and an overflow

  370. of His,

  371. of His creative expression,

  372. uh,

  373. consider

  374. that this God,

  375. according to the Bible,

  376. is willing

  377. to marshal

  378. even those highest,

  379. most glorious,

  380. heavenly beings

  381. to carry out

  382. His saving plan

  383. for you.

  384. In other words,

  385. God doesn't withhold

  386. any part of His creation,

  387. seen or unseen,

  388. from working for the good

  389. for those He longs to save.

  390. Isn't that an incredible message?

  391. After all,

  392. is it so hard to believe

  393. that the God

  394. who created

  395. all the beauty

  396. that we see

  397. might also have

  398. even more in store,

  399. that there might be

  400. an unseen transcendent realm

  401. where this God

  402. also displays

  403. His beauty

  404. and power

  405. and majesty?

  406. And is it not a wonder

  407. to believe

  408. that God in love

  409. commands even

  410. that transcendent part

  411. of His creation

  412. to minister to those

  413. who are to inherit salvation?

  414. Little folks like you and me.

  415. Well, back to Exodus 23.

  416. Clearly,

  417. this particular angel

  418. has a special role

  419. to play in the story, right?

  420. Notice how closely

  421. he's identified

  422. with God's presence

  423. and activity.

  424. God tells Israel

  425. to obey His voice

  426. in verse 21.

  427. And then in verse 22,

  428. look at that verse with me.

  429. What the angel says

  430. and what God says

  431. are almost interchangeable.

  432. God says,

  433. carefully obey His voice

  434. and do all I say.

  435. That's a very interesting

  436. switch of pronouns.

  437. And this angel seems

  438. not just to convey

  439. God's own voice,

  440. but in verse 22,

  441. this angel seems

  442. to have God's own authority

  443. to pardon

  444. or not pardon transgression.

  445. And then to top it all off,

  446. God says,

  447. my name is in Him.

  448. That is God's revealed

  449. character and glory

  450. is somehow,

  451. someway in this angel,

  452. whatever that means.

  453. In other words,

  454. a closer identification

  455. with God

  456. couldn't be imagined.

  457. is it any wonder

  458. that many have looked back

  459. at these Old Testament passages

  460. about the angel of the Lord?

  461. They've looked back

  462. from the perspective

  463. of the New Testament

  464. and thought that

  465. perhaps we are dealing

  466. here with a pre-incarnate

  467. appearance of Christ Himself,

  468. God the Son,

  469. the second person

  470. of the Trinity.

  471. Who else could be,

  472. on the one hand,

  473. distinguished from God?

  474. Yes, it's different.

  475. And yet at the same time,

  476. so closely identified

  477. with God.

  478. But whether the angel

  479. is actually

  480. the pre-incarnate Christ

  481. or not,

  482. surely what we see

  483. about this angel

  484. in Exodus 23

  485. ultimately finds

  486. its fulfillment

  487. in Christ the Lord.

  488. God says,

  489. my angel is going

  490. to be with you

  491. and go before you.

  492. And the risen Lord Jesus

  493. says to His disciples,

  494. all authority on heaven

  495. and earth belongs to me,

  496. has been given to me,

  497. and I'm with you always,

  498. even to the end of the age.

  499. If God was somehow

  500. present with His people

  501. through this angel,

  502. how much more present

  503. is God with us

  504. in His own Son,

  505. the risen Lord Jesus?

  506. What good news that is,

  507. that God is going

  508. to be with us

  509. in this personal,

  510. present way.

  511. And not just with us.

  512. Notice what God says.

  513. God says,

  514. I'm not just going

  515. to be with you,

  516. but I'm going

  517. to go before you.

  518. And hasn't the Lord Jesus

  519. truly gone before us?

  520. He's gone before us

  521. into the depths

  522. of our human condition

  523. when He took on flesh,

  524. did He not?

  525. And He went before us

  526. in His temptation

  527. in the wilderness

  528. to know what it's like

  529. to face trial

  530. and temptation

  531. and spiritual attack.

  532. And He went before us

  533. in His earthly life

  534. as He ministered

  535. and loved God

  536. and loved others

  537. and as He faced rejection

  538. and as He faced challenge

  539. and as He faced persecution.

  540. And Jesus went before us

  541. when He was arrested

  542. and when He was crucified.

  543. Jesus went before us

  544. even into the grave.

  545. And Christ went before us

  546. into the new life

  547. of resurrection.

  548. and He went before us

  549. into the heavenly places

  550. when He ascended on high.

  551. And we know that He will

  552. go before us one day

  553. when He returns

  554. to make all things new.

  555. Friends,

  556. what good news

  557. that Jesus is not just with us.

  558. God is not just with us

  559. in His Son

  560. by His Spirit,

  561. but God is always before us.

  562. Blazing the trail ahead.

  563. Clearing the way for us.

  564. Our buffer and our shield.

  565. Ultimately taking our sin,

  566. giving us His righteousness,

  567. filling us with His Spirit.

  568. Now for the Israelites,

  569. God's angel going before them

  570. meant that God would ultimately

  571. drive out all their enemies

  572. and bring them safely home

  573. to the promised land.

  574. The victory against these warring tribes

  575. that they would face

  576. was assured.

  577. The battle,

  578. God said,

  579. I would win it for you.

  580. God will terrify their enemies.

  581. He will throw them into confusion.

  582. He will make them

  583. turn their backs and run.

  584. Again and again,

  585. God says,

  586. I will drive them out.

  587. I will make sure

  588. that you make it safely

  589. all the way home.

  590. And friends,

  591. isn't that the nature,

  592. the real nature

  593. of the biblical message?

  594. That God does something for us

  595. that we can't do.

  596. Our enemies are too strong

  597. and our guilt

  598. is too great

  599. for us

  600. to save ourselves.

  601. We can't make things right

  602. with God.

  603. We can't bring ourselves

  604. into the rest

  605. God has for us

  606. all on our own.

  607. In fact,

  608. it has to be

  609. God's grace.

  610. It has to be

  611. God's action

  612. on our behalf.

  613. That's the only thing

  614. that can assure us

  615. of final

  616. and complete salvation.

  617. And that's meant

  618. to give us hope

  619. and encouragement

  620. as we look at the long

  621. spiritual road ahead.

  622. You know,

  623. maybe you sit here

  624. and you look ahead

  625. and you see

  626. some of the challenges ahead.

  627. Most of us

  628. can't see

  629. what challenges

  630. are ahead.

  631. And maybe

  632. as you look ahead

  633. you wonder,

  634. man,

  635. am I going to make it?

  636. But we don't go alone.

  637. God is before us.

  638. Every battle,

  639. every trial,

  640. He is there

  641. to guard us

  642. and to bring us in.

  643. But this promise

  644. also comes

  645. with a clarification

  646. here in this text.

  647. Yes,

  648. God promises

  649. to go before His people.

  650. But the second thing

  651. we learn from this passage

  652. is that the battles

  653. are actually going

  654. to be won

  655. little by little.

  656. Look again

  657. at verses 29 and 30.

  658. They tell us

  659. that when Israel

  660. enters the land,

  661. God won't drive out

  662. the people all at once.

  663. It's going to be gradual.

  664. Why?

  665. Otherwise,

  666. if all the people

  667. just sort of disappeared,

  668. the uninhabited land

  669. would become

  670. too much

  671. for them to handle.

  672. They weren't strong enough.

  673. They weren't numerous enough

  674. to be able

  675. to manage

  676. that much.

  677. I think there's

  678. a really,

  679. really important

  680. analogy here

  681. to the Christian life.

  682. How many of us

  683. have been frustrated

  684. by a besetting sin

  685. and wondered why

  686. God doesn't just

  687. take it away?

  688. But you know,

  689. that is rarely

  690. how God works

  691. in the Christian life.

  692. The process

  693. of sanctification,

  694. of growing

  695. in godliness

  696. and Christ-like

  697. character

  698. is gradual.

  699. It's progressive.

  700. It happens

  701. little

  702. by little.

  703. God knew

  704. that if he drove

  705. out all the people

  706. from Canaan

  707. at once,

  708. the land

  709. would overwhelm

  710. the Israelites.

  711. You see,

  712. God's wisdom

  713. was so much

  714. deeper than theirs.

  715. Perhaps God

  716. has his reasons

  717. for not removing

  718. all of your

  719. besetting sins

  720. all at once,

  721. of making sure

  722. that it's a process

  723. of little

  724. by little

  725. growth.

  726. You see,

  727. there's a bigger

  728. story

  729. that you're a part of,

  730. and God

  731. is doing

  732. a much

  733. bigger

  734. work

  735. in your life

  736. than you can imagine.

  737. It's deeper

  738. and it's longer

  739. and it has

  740. a much

  741. greater end

  742. than most of us

  743. can conceive.

  744. At the very least,

  745. the Lord is teaching

  746. you to depend

  747. on him

  748. each day,

  749. to take up

  750. the means

  751. of grace

  752. like prayer

  753. and worship

  754. and the Lord's

  755. supper

  756. and the filling

  757. of your mind

  758. with scripture

  759. through reading

  760. and meditation,

  761. to take up

  762. these means

  763. of Christ

  764. and to fight

  765. the good fight

  766. of the faith.

  767. He's teaching

  768. you to press

  769. on in obedience

  770. and trust,

  771. to not be passive

  772. in our spiritual

  773. growth,

  774. but active,

  775. to keep in step

  776. with the spirit,

  777. to keep taking

  778. off the old self

  779. and putting on

  780. the new self,

  781. as Paul said

  782. in Ephesians.

  783. I sometimes think

  784. what sort of person

  785. I would be

  786. had God simply

  787. taken away

  788. some of my

  789. particular habitual

  790. sins all at once.

  791. And trust me,

  792. there are still

  793. many left in my life

  794. that God has taken

  795. care of.

  796. I don't stand

  797. before you

  798. a completely

  799. sanctified individual

  800. this morning,

  801. but,

  802. you know,

  803. I think had God

  804. just given me

  805. sort of instant

  806. victory

  807. over some of

  808. these things,

  809. I imagine

  810. that I would

  811. probably be

  812. very proud.

  813. Don't you think?

  814. I wouldn't know

  815. what it's like

  816. to depend

  817. on the Lord

  818. each day.

  819. I would be

  820. probably a lot

  821. more ingrained

  822. in my natural

  823. self-reliance.

  824. I wouldn't know

  825. what it's like

  826. to call out

  827. to Him

  828. in prayer,

  829. to wait on the Lord,

  830. to look to Him

  831. for daily grace.

  832. And I certainly

  833. wouldn't know

  834. half so well

  835. how to minister

  836. to others

  837. who struggle.

  838. I would probably

  839. be much more

  840. impatient

  841. and condescending.

  842. So, friends,

  843. God in His wisdom

  844. gives us the victory

  845. little by little

  846. so that the fields

  847. and the terrain

  848. of our uncultivated

  849. hearts don't come

  850. back to overwhelm us.

  851. I think there's

  852. a special word here

  853. to the discouraged

  854. among us this morning.

  855. Brothers and sisters,

  856. don't be downhearted

  857. by the little

  858. by little nature

  859. of the Christian life.

  860. Don't be discouraged

  861. that it's a process

  862. of growth.

  863. And if you feel

  864. like you can't even

  865. see the little

  866. by little,

  867. if it feels like

  868. you're not growing

  869. at all,

  870. then I would

  871. encourage you

  872. to get with

  873. an older,

  874. more mature

  875. Christian

  876. who knows you

  877. well

  878. and ask them

  879. what they see

  880. in your life.

  881. Often,

  882. we aren't the best

  883. judge of our

  884. own spiritual state.

  885. Often,

  886. others can see

  887. the little

  888. by little growth

  889. much better

  890. than we can.

  891. So, friends,

  892. don't be discouraged

  893. that the Christian life

  894. is a process.

  895. Expect it.

  896. Look at what

  897. God is teaching

  898. you through

  899. that little

  900. by little

  901. process of growth.

  902. And perhaps

  903. there's also

  904. a word here

  905. to the spiritually

  906. complacent.

  907. Friends,

  908. are you in

  909. the fight?

  910. Notice at the

  911. end of verse 31,

  912. after God says,

  913. I will drive them

  914. out,

  915. I will drive them

  916. out numerous times,

  917. then God says,

  918. I will give the

  919. inhabitants into

  920. your hand

  921. and you shall

  922. drive them out

  923. before you.

  924. Yes,

  925. the victory

  926. ultimately belongs

  927. to the Lord,

  928. Lord,

  929. but you do

  930. have a responsibility,

  931. a role to play

  932. in your growth

  933. and holiness.

  934. So,

  935. ask yourself

  936. this morning,

  937. am I concerned

  938. at all

  939. to engage

  940. in this little

  941. by little

  942. growth?

  943. Or have I

  944. become complacent?

  945. Friends,

  946. do you care

  947. at all

  948. for the growth

  949. of your fellow

  950. church members?

  951. believers?

  952. Are you praying

  953. and encouraging

  954. them in this

  955. battle to become

  956. more like Christ?

  957. Here,

  958. the call of this

  959. passage is to

  960. get in the game,

  961. to fight the good

  962. fight,

  963. to wake up

  964. from your sleep.

  965. And this leads us

  966. to the third

  967. and last lesson

  968. of our passage,

  969. the main exhortation

  970. that God gives

  971. to the Israelites

  972. as they're poised

  973. to enter

  974. the promised land

  975. is that they

  976. must have

  977. nothing to do

  978. with the false

  979. gods of the

  980. people around

  981. them.

  982. In very stark

  983. language,

  984. God says,

  985. when you encounter

  986. their idolatrous

  987. practices,

  988. here's what I

  989. want you to do.

  990. I want you to

  991. completely overthrow

  992. them and smash

  993. all their pillars

  994. into pieces

  995. and have nothing

  996. to do with

  997. their false

  998. worship.

  999. Verse 32

  1000. says,

  1001. don't make

  1002. any covenants

  1003. with any of

  1004. their gods.

  1005. Don't compromise

  1006. with them

  1007. in any way.

  1008. Otherwise,

  1009. he says,

  1010. it will be

  1011. a snare

  1012. to you.

  1013. Now,

  1014. that's an

  1015. interesting

  1016. little word

  1017. picture,

  1018. isn't it?

  1019. A snare.

  1020. Most of us

  1021. live in the

  1022. city or in the

  1023. suburbs,

  1024. so we don't

  1025. really go

  1026. hunting a lot.

  1027. Some of you

  1028. like to go

  1029. hunting.

  1030. I doubt

  1031. many of you

  1032. hunt with a

  1033. snare,

  1034. which is like

  1035. a small little

  1036. trap.

  1037. For a small

  1038. little animal.

  1039. And doesn't a

  1040. snare sort of

  1041. seem like a

  1042. harmless little

  1043. thing, right?

  1044. Something you

  1045. can kind of

  1046. easily avoid,

  1047. easily handle,

  1048. you just step

  1049. over it,

  1050. you watch out

  1051. for it,

  1052. until you get

  1053. caught,

  1054. until you get

  1055. stuck.

  1056. Idolatry and

  1057. sin are like

  1058. that, God

  1059. says.

  1060. You think you

  1061. can handle it.

  1062. You tell yourself

  1063. that you have

  1064. it under

  1065. control.

  1066. So what if I

  1067. indulge in a

  1068. little compromise

  1069. here or there?

  1070. It's no big

  1071. deal.

  1072. I'm not really

  1073. harming anyone.

  1074. And then,

  1075. it catches you.

  1076. It traps you.

  1077. That lustful look

  1078. here and there

  1079. becomes a

  1080. consuming

  1081. addiction.

  1082. indulging in

  1083. self-pity

  1084. every once in

  1085. a while

  1086. becomes a

  1087. deep-seated

  1088. bitterness

  1089. against God

  1090. and others.

  1091. Bending the

  1092. truth from

  1093. time to time

  1094. at work

  1095. becomes a

  1096. growing

  1097. cover-up

  1098. that spirals

  1099. out of

  1100. control.

  1101. That

  1102. hunger

  1103. for

  1104. whatever it

  1105. might be,

  1106. comfort or

  1107. approval

  1108. starts to

  1109. dominate all

  1110. of your

  1111. relationships,

  1112. your own

  1113. view of

  1114. yourself and

  1115. others in

  1116. the world.

  1117. What this

  1118. passage teaches

  1119. us is that

  1120. if you see

  1121. the sin in

  1122. your life,

  1123. if you see

  1124. the idols in

  1125. your own

  1126. heart,

  1127. those things

  1128. that are

  1129. taking the

  1130. place of

  1131. God in

  1132. your life,

  1133. the ultimate

  1134. drivers of

  1135. your motivation

  1136. and your

  1137. identity,

  1138. those good

  1139. things that

  1140. have become

  1141. ultimate

  1142. things,

  1143. if you see

  1144. those things

  1145. in your

  1146. heart,

  1147. the Lord

  1148. is telling

  1149. His people

  1150. here,

  1151. don't

  1152. compromise.

  1153. Be

  1154. unrelenting

  1155. in your

  1156. approach to

  1157. get rid

  1158. of them.

  1159. Back in the

  1160. fall, we

  1161. walked very

  1162. slowly through

  1163. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1164. 8, which is

  1165. a chapter of

  1166. much beauty

  1167. and power

  1168. and glory

  1169. and hope,

  1170. and in

  1171. the middle

  1172. of that

  1173. chapter,

  1174. Paul says,

  1175. here's what

  1176. you should

  1177. do with

  1178. your sinful

  1179. nature.

  1180. Kill it.

  1181. Put it to

  1182. death.

  1183. You know,

  1184. no one ever

  1185. finds a spot

  1186. of skin

  1187. cancer and

  1188. says,

  1189. no,

  1190. melanoma.

  1191. It's no big

  1192. deal.

  1193. I can handle

  1194. that.

  1195. You know,

  1196. I've got a lot

  1197. of freckles.

  1198. It's genetic.

  1199. I don't

  1200. tan.

  1201. I freckle,

  1202. and then I

  1203. burn.

  1204. No big deal.

  1205. I can handle

  1206. this.

  1207. No one says

  1208. that.

  1209. Why?

  1210. Because that

  1211. thing is going

  1212. to spread

  1213. before you

  1214. know it

  1215. to other

  1216. parts of

  1217. your body

  1218. and it's

  1219. going to

  1220. kill you.

  1221. Friends,

  1222. it's the

  1223. same with

  1224. the idols

  1225. of our

  1226. hearts.

  1227. Whether they

  1228. come from

  1229. within or

  1230. whether they

  1231. seep in

  1232. from the

  1233. outside,

  1234. they are

  1235. a snare

  1236. ready to

  1237. trap

  1238. and destroy

  1239. us.

  1240. And here's

  1241. the stark

  1242. thing about

  1243. this passage.

  1244. God says

  1245. if we

  1246. persist

  1247. in harboring

  1248. sin

  1249. and in

  1250. refusing to

  1251. heed God's

  1252. voice,

  1253. if we go

  1254. on in

  1255. unrepentant

  1256. idolatry,

  1257. thinking that

  1258. we can have

  1259. God's favor

  1260. and blatantly

  1261. disobey God

  1262. at the same

  1263. time,

  1264. then what

  1265. God says

  1266. earlier in

  1267. verse 21

  1268. will be

  1269. true of

  1270. us.

  1271. He will

  1272. not pardon

  1273. your

  1274. transgressions.

  1275. That's a

  1276. stark

  1277. verse.

  1278. But it's

  1279. a very

  1280. real warning.

  1281. If we

  1282. go on

  1283. refusing

  1284. to heed

  1285. God's

  1286. voice,

  1287. if we

  1288. persist

  1289. in

  1290. unrepentant

  1291. sin,

  1292. if we

  1293. never

  1294. humble

  1295. ourselves

  1296. before

  1297. Christ

  1298. as our

  1299. Savior

  1300. and as

  1301. our

  1302. much

  1303. needed

  1304. Lord,

  1305. if we

  1306. never

  1307. come to

  1308. God

  1309. and say,

  1310. I will

  1311. be done,

  1312. Lord,

  1313. then God

  1314. will turn

  1315. to us

  1316. and say,

  1317. I will

  1318. be done.

  1319. Go.

  1320. God

  1321. will not

  1322. pardon

  1323. our

  1324. transgressions.

  1325. However,

  1326. God

  1327. will

  1328. God

  1329. will

  1330. turn

  1331. from

  1332. self-reliance

  1333. and

  1334. self-direction

  1335. and idolatry

  1336. and sin

  1337. and turn

  1338. to Christ.

  1339. God

  1340. is rich

  1341. and abundant

  1342. in mercy.

  1343. God

  1344. does not

  1345. expect us

  1346. to be

  1347. sinless

  1348. in this

  1349. life.

  1350. That is

  1351. not what

  1352. God

  1353. requires.

  1354. God

  1355. doesn't

  1356. want

  1357. perfect

  1358. people

  1359. because

  1360. newsflash,

  1361. they don't

  1362. exist.

  1363. God

  1364. wants

  1365. humble

  1366. people

  1367. who

  1368. know

  1369. they

  1370. need

  1371. a

  1372. Savior

  1373. and

  1374. who

  1375. surrender

  1376. their

  1377. lives

  1378. to

  1379. him

  1380. in

  1381. willing

  1382. trust.

  1383. And

  1384. when

  1385. we

  1386. come

  1387. to

  1388. him

  1389. with

  1390. that

  1391. posture,

  1392. the

  1393. mercy

  1394. of

  1395. God

  1396. overflows

  1397. beyond

  1398. what we

  1399. could ask

  1400. or think.

  1401. In

  1402. verses

  1403. 25 and

  1404. 26,

  1405. listen

  1406. to how

  1407. God

  1408. woos

  1409. Israel

  1410. away from

  1411. the

  1412. worship

  1413. of

  1414. idols

  1415. to

  1416. serve

  1417. him

  1418. alone.

  1419. Look at

  1420. those

  1421. verses

  1422. again.

  1423. He

  1424. says,

  1425. you

  1426. shall

  1427. serve

  1428. the

  1429. Lord

  1430. your

  1431. God

  1432. and

  1433. he

  1434. will

  1435. bless

  1436. your

  1437. bread

  1438. and

  1439. your

  1440. water

  1441. and

  1442. I

  1443. will

  1444. take

  1445. sicknesses

  1446. away

  1447. from

  1448. you.

  1449. None

  1450. shall

  1451. miscarry

  1452. or be

  1453. barren

  1454. in

  1455. your

  1456. land.

  1457. I

  1458. will

  1459. fulfill

  1460. the

  1461. number

  1462. of

  1463. your

  1464. days.

  1465. It's

  1466. a

  1467. picture

  1468. of

  1469. total

  1470. flourishing.

  1471. Friends,

  1472. what

  1473. are you

  1474. looking

  1475. for

  1476. in

  1477. those

  1478. idols

  1479. of

  1480. your

  1481. heart

  1482. or

  1483. in

  1484. those

  1485. sins

  1486. that

  1487. you

  1488. harbor?

  1489. When

  1490. you're

  1491. driven

  1492. by a

  1493. need

  1494. for

  1495. success,

  1496. for

  1497. example,

  1498. what

  1499. is

  1500. you're

  1501. really

  1502. longing

  1503. for?

  1504. Acclaim,

  1505. affirmation,

  1506. a sense

  1507. of identity

  1508. and purpose,

  1509. a feeling

  1510. of worth?

  1511. What do

  1512. you seek?

  1513. When

  1514. God

  1515. says to

  1516. Old

  1517. Testament

  1518. Israel

  1519. that he's

  1520. going to

  1521. bless

  1522. him in

  1523. all

  1524. these

  1525. ways,

  1526. he's

  1527. trying to

  1528. teach

  1529. us

  1530. something.

  1531. He's

  1532. trying to

  1533. show

  1534. us

  1535. that

  1536. in

  1537. him

  1538. we

  1539. find

  1540. real

  1541. life

  1542. and

  1543. in

  1544. him

  1545. alone.

  1546. The

  1547. Old

  1548. Testament

  1549. promises

  1550. of

  1551. physical

  1552. or

  1553. material

  1554. blessing

  1555. for

  1556. serving

  1557. the

  1558. Lord

  1559. were

  1560. pointers

  1561. to

  1562. something

  1563. even

  1564. greater.

  1565. God

  1566. no

  1567. longer

  1568. promises

  1569. us

  1570. long

  1571. life

  1572. and

  1573. material

  1574. prosperity.

  1575. What

  1576. does

  1577. God

  1578. promise

  1579. us?

  1580. Resurrection

  1581. life.

  1582. eternal

  1583. life as

  1584. heirs

  1585. of a

  1586. new

  1587. creation.

  1588. You

  1589. know,

  1590. the

  1591. Old

  1592. Testament

  1593. Israelites

  1594. never

  1595. did

  1596. drive

  1597. out

  1598. the

  1599. Canaanites

  1600. completely.

  1601. They

  1602. persisted

  1603. in being

  1604. a snare

  1605. to them.

  1606. And they

  1607. never

  1608. did get

  1609. free

  1610. from the

  1611. false

  1612. gods

  1613. and the

  1614. idolatry

  1615. around

  1616. them.

  1617. But

  1618. then

  1619. Christ

  1620. lost.

  1621. Their

  1622. king,

  1623. our

  1624. king

  1625. came.

  1626. And he

  1627. went ahead

  1628. of us

  1629. and won

  1630. an even

  1631. greater

  1632. victory

  1633. and pioneered

  1634. away into

  1635. an even

  1636. better land.

  1637. And he's

  1638. defeated all

  1639. of our

  1640. enemies to

  1641. bring us

  1642. there.

  1643. Through

  1644. his own

  1645. blood,

  1646. Christ has

  1647. defeated

  1648. our sin

  1649. and death

  1650. and he

  1651. commands

  1652. everyone

  1653. everywhere

  1654. to turn

  1655. to him

  1656. and be

  1657. saved.

  1658. And he

  1659. promises

  1660. to go

  1661. before us

  1662. and to

  1663. bring us

  1664. all the

  1665. way home.

  1666. So

  1667. brothers and

  1668. sisters,

  1669. as we

  1670. look at

  1671. the road

  1672. ahead

  1673. and all

  1674. the

  1675. daunting

  1676. trials

  1677. that may

  1678. be in

  1679. store,

  1680. listen

  1681. to what

  1682. the book

  1683. of Hebrews

  1684. says.

  1685. It says,

  1686. lay aside

  1687. every weight

  1688. and the

  1689. sin which

  1690. clings so

  1691. closely

  1692. and let

  1693. us run

  1694. with endurance

  1695. the race

  1696. that is set

  1697. before us,

  1698. looking to

  1699. Jesus,

  1700. the pioneer

  1701. and perfecter

  1702. of our

  1703. faith,

  1704. the one

  1705. who goes

  1706. before us,

  1707. who for

  1708. the joy

  1709. that was

  1710. set before

  1711. him endured

  1712. the cross,

  1713. despising

  1714. the shame

  1715. and is

  1716. seated at

  1717. the right

  1718. hand of

  1719. the throne

  1720. of God,

  1721. reigning

  1722. in glory,

  1723. coming one

  1724. day to

  1725. bring all

  1726. things into

  1727. fullness and

  1728. to bring us

  1729. home safely.

  1730. Let's

  1731. pray.

  1732. Father,

  1733. perhaps as

  1734. we've

  1735. sat under

  1736. this passage

  1737. this morning,

  1738. we realize

  1739. that there

  1740. are some

  1741. areas of

  1742. our lives

  1743. where we

  1744. have been

  1745. too

  1746. compromising

  1747. with the

  1748. idols of

  1749. our world

  1750. around us

  1751. or the

  1752. secret sins

  1753. of our

  1754. own hearts.

  1755. Father,

  1756. we bring

  1757. those sins

  1758. before you

  1759. now in

  1760. the quiet

  1761. of our

  1762. hearts and

  1763. we ask

  1764. for your

  1765. forgiveness.

  1766. God,

  1767. help us

  1768. to see

  1769. that in

  1770. you and

  1771. in you

  1772. alone belongs

  1773. a real

  1774. blessing and

  1775. purpose and

  1776. joy.

  1777. God,

  1778. for many of

  1779. my brothers

  1780. and sisters

  1781. here this

  1782. morning who

  1783. are fearful

  1784. of the road

  1785. ahead or

  1786. who may be

  1787. discouraged,

  1788. encouraged by

  1789. their growth

  1790. and holiness

  1791. feeling that

  1792. they've just

  1793. not seen the

  1794. victory or the

  1795. conquest or the

  1796. growth that they

  1797. would like to

  1798. see.

  1799. Oh,

  1800. Lord,

  1801. by your

  1802. spirit would

  1803. you encourage

  1804. them this

  1805. morning.

  1806. Help them to

  1807. see that all

  1808. is not lost,

  1809. that even if

  1810. they've stumbled

  1811. for the

  1812. 19th,

  1813. for the

  1814. 20th,

  1815. for the

  1816. 21st,

  1817. for the

  1818. 100th time,

  1819. God,

  1820. you never

  1821. turn away

  1822. the broken

  1823. hearted and

  1824. the contrite.

  1825. God,

  1826. you are near

  1827. to us and

  1828. you promise

  1829. to carry us

  1830. through,

  1831. to go before

  1832. us.

  1833. Lord,

  1834. help us to

  1835. remember that

  1836. this week,

  1837. that you are

  1838. indeed before

  1839. us in all of

  1840. this earthly

  1841. pilgrimage.

  1842. We pray this

  1843. in Jesus' name.

  1844. Amen.
