  1. seated. Well, good morning. Again, it is warm. I see the fans and the bulletins flapping.

  2. Just so you can know, there are fan zones. If you are not in a fan zone and you are feeling like you

  3. are dying, go ahead and get up now and move to a fan zone so that you can feel the breeze and stay

  4. awake and stay alert for the next few minutes. If you need to get up and take a glass of water or

  5. the water fountain out by the bathroom in the back, please feel free to do that in the middle

  6. of my sermon. I promise I won't be offended. And please know that as well, there's downstairs,

  7. I think, is still a little cooler. Alex, is that right? Yes? A little bit. Not a lot, but a little

  8. bit. So if you just need a different space to get up, you may go downstairs and there's speakers down

  9. there and you'll be able to hear the sermon well from there. So in the next little while, we want

  10. you to be as comfortable as possible so that you can listen to God's Word. Because this is,

  11. as we gather, the central thing in many ways about what we do is to listen to what God has

  12. to say to us. So let me encourage you to take those steps as we get started this morning.

  13. We are in a series in the book of Exodus. And if you would like to turn there, you may turn there

  14. with me. Page 68 is in the Pew Bibles. As you're turning there, I want to ask you a question.

  15. If you could walk into God's throne room, what would be your default understanding of God?

  16. We often, I think, fall into one of two camps. And for those kids in the room, I'm going to teach you

  17. two really big words right now. The first one, the first camp is that we focus on God's transcendence.

  18. What does transcendence mean? My God is so big, so strong, and so mighty. It means that God is high

  19. and exalted and beyond us in His greatness and in His glory. He's untouchable and unreachable. That's

  20. transcendence. And often I think we focus on this, His majesty and His power, His sovereignty and His

  21. creator role that is other than the creation in which we live. His holiness, His moral purity and His

  22. judgment make a transcendent God unapproachable and terrifying. But some of us perhaps think of God by

  23. focusing on His imminence. Imminence means that He is close by or approachable or near to us.

  24. We focus on the fact that God has made Himself known, that God is with us. You know the old

  25. Bible song, Jesus is a friend, is a friend next to you. Jesus is a friend, is a friend. La la. Nope.

  26. Okay. I just dated myself, didn't I? So if you haven't heard that one, you need to sign up for a

  27. vacation Bible school or go off to Christian camp somewhere so you can pick it up. This sense that

  28. Jesus, that God is familiar to us, that He is close to us, that He is a friend and that in doing so,

  29. and that God in His mercy and grace is approachable and accepting.

  30. And I think the reality is that most of us have a default of one or the other.

  31. If I looked at our broad church culture, generally I think we lean towards the second.

  32. God is very familiar and approachable to us, and we lack a valuing of His holiness.

  33. But for each of us, because of your own story, because of your own background, both in church

  34. and in your own family, you may be on either side of this spectrum.

  35. But I want you to think about it because as you consider this, our default view of how God is

  36. then affects how we think we can or cannot approach Him, and how we worship Him, and how we serve Him.

  37. And we tend towards one or the other, and yet what we see in the Bible and what we have seen already

  38. in the book of Exodus is that the Bible affirms both. God is both a transcendent, high, exalted,

  39. holy God, and a God who has come down to be with His people, to be known, and to know, and to be amongst them.

  40. We've seen it. His transcendence is shown in things like His power in the ten plagues when He judged Egypt

  41. and showed His great judgment against sin and His great power over the created order.

  42. How He traveled with His people in a pillar of smoke and fire that was terrifying and unapproachable.

  43. How when Moses went up to the top of the mountain, the glory descended, and it was like lightning and thunder

  44. and a storm beyond, and the people shrank back in fear and said,

  45. we can't go up there. Moses, you go for us.

  46. Moses. And yet, this same story of Exodus has also had God meeting with Moses at the burning bush.

  47. We've seen God meeting with Moses on the mountain face to face.

  48. And we've seen back in chapter 19 the incredible promise that God will take this people

  49. and having delivered them from Egypt, make them His people.

  50. And He will be their God and He will dwell in their midst.

  51. This high and exalted, transcendent God will actually live among the people of God.

  52. And as we've been just recently talking about, if you were here last week,

  53. in chapters 25 through 31, we have the picture of the tabernacle,

  54. which is this portable worship center, basically, for God's people to worship Him.

  55. And the very picture that Nick painted of this is that this tabernacle had the amazing good news

  56. that God would actually, His glory would come and dwell in the midst of His people.

  57. And yet, that dwelling had curtains and layers and all these barriers

  58. because a holy God cannot be casually addressed, cannot be casually walked up into.

  59. Why is this?

  60. Try to make it through.

  61. Because God is a holy God.

  62. The Bible describes Him as being an unapproachable light

  63. or having a purity that is white as snow,

  64. having the purity of a clean water.

  65. And when in our sinfulness,

  66. in our imperfection, both morally and personally,

  67. we try to interact with this purity,

  68. all we do is besmirch such holiness.

  69. We soil His purity.

  70. We ruin His perfection.

  71. And so, sin is this defilement of a holy God.

  72. It is incompatible with God.

  73. And it results in judgment.

  74. Like approaching a fire too closely,

  75. you get burned.

  76. So, in our sinfulness,

  77. as we approach the fire of God's holiness,

  78. we find that judgment is the appropriate response

  79. for our imperfection.

  80. And so, this then leaves us with a great dilemma, doesn't it?

  81. And this is what God is answering

  82. in this section on the tabernacle

  83. and indeed in this greater story in Exodus

  84. of God calling His people to be His people

  85. is how is it that God,

  86. the Holy Transcendent One,

  87. can have communion or fellowship

  88. or be with a sinful people like us?

  89. How is it possible

  90. that we could approach God

  91. and that He could dwell in our midst?

  92. And this brings us to our text this morning.

  93. Chapters 28 and 29.

  94. Again, Nick mentioned last…

  95. or Nick preached last week

  96. on the tabernacle,

  97. the building in which all of this happened.

  98. But what we see is that

  99. in the midst of the building,

  100. God has provided something else

  101. for us to understand.

  102. No, I'm good, thanks.

  103. God has given us something else

  104. so that we can understand

  105. how it is that His people

  106. may interact with Him,

  107. a holy God,

  108. and that is the priesthood.

  109. God has provided one

  110. to stand in the gap

  111. between a holy God

  112. and sinful people

  113. to be a priesthood for us.

  114. So we're going to look at

  115. the nature of the priesthood today.

  116. We're going to look at

  117. what these two chapters

  118. tell us about it

  119. and we're going to think about

  120. what it means for us.

  121. So if you want to follow along with me,

  122. I'm going to read three sections.

  123. I'm not going to read

  124. the whole two chapters.

  125. I promise, good heavens,

  126. we'd be here till noon.

  127. We're going to read two sections,

  128. the beginning of chapter 28,

  129. the beginning of chapter 29,

  130. and the very end of chapter 29,

  131. just so you can get the shape

  132. of what it is.

  133. Broadly, chapter 28

  134. is about the garments

  135. that the priest would wear

  136. and chapter 29

  137. is about the process

  138. of the consecration

  139. or the setting apart

  140. of Aaron and his sons

  141. to actually be the priesthood.

  142. So broadly,

  143. that's what these two chapters

  144. are about.

  145. Let me read

  146. and then we'll pray

  147. and then we'll dive in

  148. and see what this has to teach us.

  149. So Exodus 28, chapter 1.

  150. Then bring near to you

  151. Aaron, your brother,

  152. and his sons with him

  153. from among the people of Israel

  154. to serve me as priests,

  155. Aaron and Aaron's sons,

  156. Nadab and Abihu,

  157. Eleazar and Ithamar.

  158. And you shall make holy garments

  159. for Aaron, your brother,

  160. for glory and for beauty.

  161. You shall speak

  162. to all the skillful

  163. whom I have filled

  164. with a spirit of skill

  165. that they make Aaron's garment

  166. to consecrate him

  167. for my priesthood.

  168. These are the garments

  169. that they shall make,

  170. a breast piece,

  171. an ephod,

  172. a robe,

  173. a coat of checker work,

  174. a turban,

  175. and a sash.

  176. They shall make holy garments

  177. for Aaron, your brother,

  178. and his sons

  179. to serve me as priests.

  180. They shall receive gold,

  181. blue and purple

  182. and scarlet yarns

  183. and fine twisted linen.

  184. And flip with me

  185. to the beginning of chapter 29

  186. and the consecration.

  187. Now this is what you shall do

  188. to them,

  189. to consecrate them,

  190. that they may serve me

  191. as priests.

  192. Take one bull of the herd

  193. and two rams

  194. without blemish,

  195. an unleavened bread,

  196. unleavened cake

  197. mixed with oil

  198. and unleavened wafers

  199. smeared with oil.

  200. You shall make them

  201. of fine wheat flour.

  202. You shall put them

  203. in one basket

  204. and bring them

  205. in the basket

  206. and you shall bring

  207. the bull and the two rams.

  208. You shall bring Aaron

  209. and his sons

  210. to the entrance

  211. of the tent of meeting

  212. and wash them with water.

  213. Then you shall take

  214. the garments

  215. and put on Aaron

  216. the coat and the robe

  217. and the ephod

  218. and the ephod

  219. and the breast piece

  220. and gird him

  221. with the skillfully woven

  222. band of the ephod.

  223. And you shall set

  224. the turban on his head

  225. and you put the holy crown

  226. on the turban.

  227. You shall take

  228. the anointing oil

  229. and pour it on his head

  230. and anoint him.

  231. Then you shall bring

  232. his sons

  233. and put coats on them

  234. and you shall gird Aaron

  235. and his sons

  236. with sashes

  237. and bind caps on them.

  238. And the priesthood

  239. shall be theirs

  240. by a statute forever.

  241. Thus you shall ordain

  242. Aaron and his sons.

  243. And then flip to me

  244. to the very end.

  245. God restates his purpose

  246. in doing all this.

  247. Starting in verse 44

  248. of chapter 29.

  249. I will consecrate

  250. the tent of meeting

  251. and the altar.

  252. Aaron also

  253. and his sons

  254. I will consecrate

  255. to serve me as priests.

  256. I will dwell

  257. among the people of Israel

  258. and will be their God

  259. and they shall know

  260. that I am the Lord

  261. their God

  262. who brought them

  263. out of the land of Egypt

  264. that I might dwell

  265. among them.

  266. I am the Lord

  267. their God.

  268. Please pray with me.

  269. Lord as we look

  270. into your word

  271. this morning

  272. we pray you help us

  273. on this hot day

  274. to listen well

  275. to your word

  276. and to learn of you.

  277. Lord I pray

  278. for your help.

  279. Lord that your word

  280. might be clear

  281. and that together

  282. we might marvel

  283. in the greatness

  284. of not only

  285. your holiness

  286. but also

  287. of the grace

  288. that you have shown

  289. giving us means

  290. that we might

  291. have fellowship

  292. with you.

  293. We pray this

  294. in Jesus name.

  295. Amen.

  296. Amen.

  297. What do we learn?

  298. As we're looking

  299. at this

  300. I just want to point out

  301. to you that in the bulletin

  302. if you haven't looked

  303. through it yet

  304. there is this lovely picture

  305. for those of you

  306. who have

  307. reading glasses

  308. I'm sorry

  309. the type

  310. is really small

  311. it's what we could get

  312. so

  313. I apologize

  314. for that not being

  315. as useful

  316. but what this does

  317. is it gives you

  318. a picture

  319. of everything

  320. that's talked about

  321. in chapter 28

  322. and I just want

  323. to point it out now

  324. because I'm not going

  325. to be reading

  326. through the sections

  327. but I'm going

  328. to be referring

  329. to verses

  330. and aspects

  331. of the priestly garments

  332. as part of

  333. what I want to do

  334. is look at the nature

  335. of the priesthood

  336. both in terms

  337. of its garments

  338. and in terms

  339. of its

  340. their consecration

  341. so that we can learn

  342. a little bit

  343. about what it means

  344. for these priests

  345. to play a mediating role

  346. between a holy God

  347. and a sinful man

  348. how is it that they

  349. take up this role

  350. and how is it that

  351. they are a blessing

  352. to God's people

  353. so let's look at that

  354. there are four things

  355. I want to point out

  356. this morning

  357. about the priesthood

  358. the first thing

  359. I want you to see

  360. and you see this

  361. in verses

  362. 1 through 4

  363. of chapter 28

  364. is that

  365. the priesthood

  366. was God's plan

  367. remember Moses

  368. has gone back up

  369. onto the mountain

  370. and God is now

  371. giving him further

  372. instruction

  373. on how they are

  374. to live as God's people

  375. and he's instructed them

  376. on this building

  377. they're supposed to make

  378. this movable tent

  379. and then in verse 28

  380. he just launches

  381. into it

  382. remember that the priesthood

  383. is not man's idea

  384. it was not Moses

  385. thinking hey

  386. I think there's a problem

  387. here God

  388. and I've got a solution

  389. God was the one

  390. who set aside

  391. Aaron and his sons

  392. and here's a remarkable thing

  393. Moses

  394. after the tabernacle

  395. was put together

  396. and consecrated

  397. Moses couldn't go in

  398. that wasn't his place anymore

  399. Moses was actually

  400. he had a different role

  401. to meet with God

  402. at the tent of meeting

  403. but he couldn't go in

  404. to the holy of holies

  405. his job was not

  406. as a priest

  407. in the same way

  408. it's a fascinating

  409. recognition

  410. that when God

  411. ordained this

  412. he actually brought

  413. Aaron in

  414. and his tribe

  415. to take this place

  416. and to play this role

  417. and what you see

  418. look at verse 41

  419. of chapter 28

  420. nope

  421. yep

  422. verse 41

  423. of chapter 28

  424. and you shall put

  425. them on Aaron

  426. your brother

  427. and on his sons

  428. and you shall

  429. anoint them

  430. and ordain them

  431. and consecrate them

  432. anoint them

  433. means that they are

  434. marked with God

  435. but with oil

  436. and for a special role

  437. to ordain them

  438. is to commission them

  439. to a particular

  440. place of service

  441. and to consecrate them

  442. is to set them apart

  443. these priests

  444. now have a role

  445. that is distinct

  446. from all the other

  447. peoples

  448. within God's

  449. within God's people

  450. they have now

  451. a special

  452. a special role

  453. that God has

  454. called them to

  455. to be fully devoted

  456. to this service

  457. of the Lord

  458. and to serve

  459. in the temple

  460. and it's a remarkable

  461. thing that God

  462. has said

  463. now I want

  464. this chunk

  465. of you

  466. to be set apart

  467. for just this

  468. and nothing else

  469. and we see that

  470. as it plays out

  471. the Levites

  472. don't have a land

  473. because they serve

  474. in the temple

  475. and they have cities

  476. and they're provided

  477. for by the other tribes

  478. and there are all sorts

  479. of ways in which

  480. God has allowed them

  481. and set them apart

  482. to have a focus

  483. on this one role

  484. and then on top of that

  485. look at 28

  486. verse 36

  487. for a minute

  488. as God is instructing

  489. them of the turban

  490. there is a crown

  491. there

  492. and that crown

  493. has emblazoned on it

  494. holy to the Lord

  495. is that what it says

  496. in the ESV

  497. holy to the Lord

  498. which means

  499. that the priest

  500. himself

  501. is being set apart

  502. again holiness

  503. really means set apart

  504. it has a moral component

  505. because God

  506. in his moral perfection

  507. is set apart

  508. from us

  509. but it's a broader

  510. concept

  511. to simply be set apart

  512. for God

  513. and the priest

  514. the high priest here

  515. Aaron is set apart

  516. and when he puts

  517. that thing on

  518. he is set apart

  519. for God

  520. to play this role

  521. and to do nothing else

  522. but to play that role

  523. friends

  524. what good news it is

  525. that God

  526. has ordained

  527. this role

  528. and this thing

  529. that he has created

  530. this priesthood

  531. that he has graciously

  532. seen the problem

  533. that we have

  534. of a sinful people

  535. approaching a holy God

  536. and he has set apart

  537. people to play

  538. a role of mediation

  539. between us

  540. we should know

  541. that we cannot

  542. approach God

  543. casually

  544. or on our own

  545. we ought to be

  546. reinforced

  547. in our understanding

  548. that we may not

  549. choose God

  550. simply on our own

  551. but that God

  552. calls

  553. and God

  554. invites

  555. and God

  556. draws

  557. and God

  558. makes us

  559. his people

  560. and what good news

  561. that is

  562. not only

  563. is the priesthood

  564. then set apart

  565. by God

  566. but the priesthood

  567. is characterized

  568. by beauty

  569. and glory

  570. you see this

  571. in chapter 28

  572. verse 2

  573. which I read

  574. earlier

  575. and again

  576. in chapter 28

  577. verse 40

  578. you shall make them

  579. for glory

  580. and for beauty

  581. now when we

  582. unpack this

  583. we see all sorts

  584. of things

  585. the colors

  586. purple

  587. gold

  588. blue

  589. are the colors

  590. of the tabernacle

  591. these are colors

  592. of royalty

  593. and colors

  594. of richness

  595. and both the tabernacle

  596. and the priestly garments

  597. are meant to reflect

  598. the richness

  599. and the beauty

  600. of God himself

  601. precious metals

  602. are used

  603. over and over again

  604. in the making

  605. of this garment

  606. for them

  607. gold in particular

  608. is throughout

  609. precious stones

  610. are put

  611. on the breastplate

  612. we see

  613. that God

  614. uses

  615. God

  616. takes

  617. the most precious

  618. things

  619. that the Israelites

  620. have

  621. to clothe

  622. the priest

  623. to clothe

  624. the one

  625. who will be

  626. this representative

  627. because it is

  628. fitting

  629. for one

  630. who approaches

  631. a holy God

  632. to have clothing

  633. that reflects

  634. his beauty

  635. and his glory

  636. and his majesty

  637. and interestingly

  638. too

  639. even something

  640. as mundane

  641. as the undergarments

  642. okay

  643. I don't know

  644. if you picked this

  645. we didn't read this

  646. so in verses 42

  647. and following

  648. of chapter 28

  649. it talks about

  650. the undergarments

  651. of the priest

  652. which is a little awkward

  653. but here's

  654. here's the amazing

  655. thing about it

  656. in all of the nations

  657. around

  658. in Canaanite ritual

  659. one of the major

  660. ways in which

  661. gods were worshipped

  662. in the cultures

  663. had to do

  664. with sex

  665. there was temple

  666. prostitution

  667. you would go in

  668. those who served

  669. in the temple

  670. would be available

  671. so that the worshipper

  672. could come

  673. and by having sex

  674. with them

  675. would actually

  676. then

  677. claim

  678. some sort of right

  679. or at least

  680. make a case

  681. for God

  682. to respond

  683. to them

  684. in a particular way

  685. and friends

  686. it's so

  687. far

  688. from what we do

  689. here at church

  690. that it's

  691. it's sort of

  692. unthinkable

  693. but recognize

  694. how radical

  695. it was

  696. because the God

  697. of the Bible

  698. says

  699. no that is not

  700. what that is for

  701. and that is not

  702. what it means

  703. to worship me

  704. and so I will

  705. clothe my priest

  706. with undergarments

  707. so that

  708. it is clear

  709. to all

  710. that this is not

  711. a part of worshipping

  712. me

  713. you worship me

  714. in spirit and truth

  715. you worship me

  716. through the offering

  717. of sacrifices

  718. and the washing

  719. of your hands

  720. you worship me

  721. through the lighting

  722. of candle

  723. because all of these

  724. have images

  725. of light

  726. and truth

  727. and purity

  728. that reflect

  729. who I am

  730. but not that

  731. now in the old days

  732. the church used to get

  733. dressed up for church

  734. used to wear

  735. a coat and tie

  736. some of you still do

  737. praise the Lord

  738. because there's a

  739. right recognition

  740. that in that culture

  741. there was a sense of

  742. I want to bring

  743. my best to church

  744. and there's a good

  745. heart behind that

  746. but on the other hand

  747. what we do see

  748. is that it's easy

  749. for us to

  750. just as in the old testament

  751. to get caught up

  752. in externalism

  753. and to think

  754. if I look good

  755. on the outside

  756. isn't that great

  757. and what God

  758. really wants

  759. is for us

  760. to clothe ourselves

  761. in beauty

  762. and glory

  763. not with our

  764. external

  765. merely

  766. thankfully we have

  767. great freedom

  768. in this church

  769. and may it go on

  770. forever

  771. you can wear

  772. what you have

  773. to come to church

  774. but what God

  775. really wants

  776. is for us

  777. to worship Him

  778. in the splendor

  779. of holiness

  780. Psalm 96

  781. says this

  782. ascribe to the Lord

  783. the glory

  784. due to His name

  785. bring an offering

  786. and come into His courts

  787. worship the Lord

  788. in the splendor

  789. of holiness

  790. tremble before Him

  791. all the earth

  792. say among the nations

  793. the Lord reigns

  794. worship the Lord

  795. in the splendor

  796. of holiness

  797. is not His holiness

  798. it's ours

  799. we are to bring

  800. the splendor

  801. of who He is

  802. and what He's done

  803. in us

  804. and for us

  805. to bear

  806. and we are to bring

  807. a goodness

  808. a character

  809. an internal

  810. reality

  811. that our life

  812. is set apart

  813. for God

  814. and that is a beautiful

  815. God that we serve

  816. so God has ordained

  817. the priests

  818. and God has made them

  819. beautiful

  820. and full of glory

  821. to reflect Him

  822. and to rightly

  823. approach Him

  824. the third thing

  825. we see is that

  826. the priest represents

  827. the people

  828. and turn with me

  829. to chapter 28

  830. verse 9

  831. in the middle

  832. of the ephod

  833. which is this tunic

  834. or piece of clothing

  835. that they wear

  836. there are clasps

  837. on the top

  838. and on those clasps

  839. there are onyx stones

  840. onyx is a black

  841. gemstone

  842. and on those stones

  843. then are written

  844. in filigree of gold

  845. the names of the tribes

  846. of the people of Israel

  847. and then on top of that

  848. is put the breast piece

  849. which some translations

  850. have breast plate

  851. which makes it feel

  852. like a medieval

  853. set of armor

  854. it's not that

  855. it's a piece of cloth

  856. but on that piece of cloth

  857. it has stones

  858. twelve of them in fact

  859. and on each stone

  860. is written

  861. again

  862. the names

  863. of the twelve tribes

  864. of Israel

  865. because

  866. the priest stands

  867. as he goes in

  868. and serves

  869. in the tabernacle

  870. because he represents

  871. the people of God

  872. he stands

  873. for

  874. the people of God

  875. just as Moses

  876. did

  877. in some way

  878. on the mountain

  879. as Moses went up

  880. and the people said

  881. no, no, no

  882. we don't want to go

  883. you go for us

  884. so God

  885. graciously accommodates

  886. and recognizes this

  887. and says

  888. okay

  889. I'm going to

  890. there is a priesthood

  891. that I have ordained

  892. to represent you

  893. before me

  894. and they wear these clothes

  895. so that they might do it

  896. and friends

  897. this is good news

  898. that one might stand

  899. for us

  900. we often think

  901. in our

  902. individualism

  903. and maybe

  904. in our pride

  905. and self-confidence

  906. that we can approach

  907. God on our own

  908. and be okay

  909. but I hope

  910. that as we've reflected

  911. a little bit

  912. on God's holiness

  913. this morning

  914. we realize

  915. it's a fearsome thing

  916. and that there is a place

  917. where it is a valuable thing

  918. to have someone

  919. mediate

  920. or someone stand

  921. between us

  922. and those

  923. who rule over us

  924. and judge us

  925. though God

  926. is a good God

  927. it does

  928. remind me of

  929. there's this great story

  930. that I read

  931. called

  932. The Miracle

  933. on the River Kwai

  934. about a guy

  935. named Ernest Gordon

  936. who was a

  937. prisoner

  938. in Southeast Asia

  939. in World War II

  940. and how he

  941. saw God

  942. at work

  943. in the midst

  944. of the most

  945. dismal

  946. abominable

  947. and cruel

  948. circumstances

  949. and one of the things

  950. that happened

  951. in those

  952. in those camps

  953. is that the officers

  954. would often

  955. stand in the place

  956. of their men

  957. when a man

  958. would find himself

  959. on the wrong side

  960. of a guard's attention

  961. where he'd done

  962. something wrong

  963. or maybe he hadn't

  964. done anything wrong

  965. and the guard

  966. had started

  967. to just abuse him

  968. which was common

  969. in this place

  970. the officers

  971. often would step in

  972. and stand in the place

  973. of their soldiers

  974. to mediate

  975. and sometimes

  976. that just

  977. simply relieved

  978. the pressure

  979. and the punishment

  980. did not happen

  981. and sometimes

  982. the punishment

  983. was turned

  984. on the officer

  985. friends

  986. those soldiers

  987. were glad

  988. to have one

  989. stand

  990. in their place

  991. now our God

  992. is not a cruel

  993. taskmaster

  994. but he is a holy God

  995. and for us

  996. to have one

  997. to stand

  998. in our place

  999. and to bear

  1000. our names

  1001. is a beautiful thing

  1002. so finally

  1003. God ordains them

  1004. God dresses them

  1005. in beauty

  1006. and glory

  1007. God calls them

  1008. to bear

  1009. the role

  1010. of a representative

  1011. and finally

  1012. we see

  1013. that this priesthood

  1014. must be

  1015. without sin

  1016. this is what

  1017. chapter 29

  1018. in some ways

  1019. is all about

  1020. as Aaron

  1021. and his sons

  1022. are set apart

  1023. there is a

  1024. recognition

  1025. that they

  1026. may not

  1027. approach

  1028. a holy God

  1029. on their own

  1030. righteousness

  1031. either

  1032. that they too

  1033. are sinful

  1034. that they too

  1035. must have

  1036. sacrifices

  1037. shed for them

  1038. in verses

  1039. 10 through 25

  1040. of chapter 29

  1041. it's about

  1042. three sacrifices

  1043. a bull

  1044. for a sin offering

  1045. to atone

  1046. for their sin

  1047. the first

  1048. ram

  1049. offered

  1050. as a

  1051. burnt offering

  1052. to express

  1053. their devotion

  1054. to God

  1055. and then the

  1056. third one

  1057. a wave offering

  1058. or a food offering

  1059. to express

  1060. their communion

  1061. with God

  1062. having had

  1063. the covering

  1064. of the first

  1065. two sacrifices

  1066. already

  1067. and when you

  1068. look throughout

  1069. you see

  1070. the blood

  1071. of these sacrifices

  1072. is sprinkled

  1073. everywhere

  1074. it's on the

  1075. altars

  1076. it's on the

  1077. clothing of the

  1078. priests

  1079. it's on the

  1080. priests themselves

  1081. their ear

  1082. and their nose

  1083. and their toe

  1084. signifying everything

  1085. that they do

  1086. these priests

  1087. needed

  1088. a sacrifice

  1089. to cover

  1090. their sin

  1091. as well

  1092. so that they

  1093. might not die

  1094. and you see

  1095. this actually

  1096. mentioned twice

  1097. in verse 28

  1098. or in chapter 28

  1099. verse 35

  1100. you see

  1101. this made

  1102. clear

  1103. right

  1104. they're wearing

  1105. these bells

  1106. and the hem

  1107. of their robe

  1108. is a particular

  1109. thing

  1110. when he comes

  1111. out

  1112. so that

  1113. the very end

  1114. of the verse

  1115. is so that

  1116. he does not

  1117. die

  1118. and then again

  1119. on verse 43

  1120. and then when

  1121. Aaron and his

  1122. sons

  1123. when they go

  1124. into the tent

  1125. of meeting

  1126. or when they

  1127. come near the

  1128. altar to minister

  1129. in the holy

  1130. place

  1131. lest they

  1132. bear guilt

  1133. and die

  1134. so built

  1135. into this

  1136. whole picture

  1137. there's a

  1138. recognition

  1139. that it

  1140. is a

  1141. fearsome

  1142. thing

  1143. to approach

  1144. a holy

  1145. God

  1146. and as we'll

  1147. see in just

  1148. a few more

  1149. chapters

  1150. as Aaron

  1151. and the people

  1152. rebel against

  1153. God with the

  1154. incident of the

  1155. holy calf

  1156. God breaks

  1157. out against

  1158. them

  1159. and he even

  1160. says I

  1161. can't go

  1162. with you

  1163. anymore

  1164. because my

  1165. holiness is so

  1166. hot and your

  1167. sinfulness is so

  1168. great I will

  1169. merely destroy

  1170. you

  1171. this is the

  1172. assumption

  1173. that God

  1174. is so

  1175. holy

  1176. and yet

  1177. what we see

  1178. here is that

  1179. even these

  1180. priests

  1181. who are

  1182. ordained

  1183. and called

  1184. by God

  1185. to represent

  1186. the people

  1187. and to stand

  1188. between

  1189. sinful people

  1190. and a

  1191. holy God

  1192. as they do

  1193. their office

  1194. they too

  1195. must offer

  1196. up

  1197. sacrifices

  1198. so what do

  1199. we see

  1200. we see

  1201. that the

  1202. tension

  1203. of how

  1204. a sinful

  1205. people

  1206. may

  1207. approach

  1208. a holy

  1209. God

  1210. is relieved

  1211. God

  1212. has provided

  1213. a mediator

  1214. God

  1215. has provided

  1216. someone

  1217. to serve

  1218. in the

  1219. temple

  1220. and to

  1221. play this

  1222. role

  1223. so that

  1224. we don't

  1225. have to

  1226. be afraid

  1227. as the

  1228. people

  1229. of God

  1230. and as

  1231. the people

  1232. of Israel

  1233. of old

  1234. and yet

  1235. the tension

  1236. is also

  1237. ratcheted up

  1238. because we

  1239. see that

  1240. even the

  1241. priest

  1242. that was

  1243. provided

  1244. wasn't

  1245. enough

  1246. it wasn't

  1247. perfect

  1248. enough

  1249. it didn't

  1250. actually

  1251. resolve

  1252. the tension

  1253. because they

  1254. were men

  1255. just like

  1256. we

  1257. they were

  1258. human beings

  1259. in our

  1260. sinful

  1261. condition

  1262. just like

  1263. we are

  1264. and it

  1265. is

  1266. awesomely

  1267. good

  1268. that God

  1269. would choose

  1270. them to

  1271. play this

  1272. role

  1273. but it

  1274. is

  1275. awesomely

  1276. terrifying

  1277. because God

  1278. cannot tolerate

  1279. sin

  1280. because only

  1281. a sinless

  1282. one

  1283. could truly

  1284. represent

  1285. and bear

  1286. the sins

  1287. of another

  1288. friends

  1289. this is

  1290. the good

  1291. news

  1292. is that

  1293. this whole

  1294. priestly

  1295. system

  1296. as much

  1297. as it

  1298. graciously

  1299. provided a

  1300. way for

  1301. God's

  1302. people to

  1303. interact

  1304. with him

  1305. and for

  1306. a holy

  1307. God to

  1308. dwell in

  1309. their midst

  1310. it also

  1311. pointed

  1312. ahead

  1313. it expressed

  1314. an incompleteness

  1315. a lack

  1316. of total

  1317. resolution

  1318. of the

  1319. problem

  1320. and it

  1321. pointed

  1322. ahead

  1323. and so

  1324. the

  1325. saints

  1326. of the

  1327. Old

  1328. Testament

  1329. looked

  1330. ahead

  1331. longing

  1332. to see

  1333. how

  1334. God

  1335. would

  1336. do

  1337. this

  1338. how

  1339. it

  1340. is

  1341. that

  1342. the

  1343. priesthood

  1344. would

  1345. be

  1346. finally

  1347. fulfilled

  1348. how

  1349. it

  1350. is

  1351. that

  1352. their

  1353. sins

  1354. could

  1355. finally

  1356. be

  1357. atoned

  1358. for

  1359. how

  1360. it

  1361. is

  1362. that

  1363. they

  1364. could

  1365. finally

  1366. dwell

  1367. with

  1368. God

  1369. and

  1370. he

  1371. with

  1372. them

  1373. in

  1374. perfection

  1375. and friends

  1376. this leads

  1377. us to

  1378. the passage

  1379. that was

  1380. read

  1381. earlier

  1382. and I

  1383. want to

  1384. look at

  1385. it

  1386. again

  1387. we're

  1388. not

  1389. going to

  1390. spend

  1391. a lot

  1392. of

  1393. time

  1394. here

  1395. but

  1396. in

  1397. chapter

  1398. 7

  1399. verses

  1400. 23

  1401. through

  1402. 27

  1403. let me

  1404. just

  1405. read

  1406. this

  1407. the

  1408. former

  1409. priests

  1410. were

  1411. many

  1412. in

  1413. number

  1414. because

  1415. they

  1416. were

  1417. prevented

  1418. by

  1419. death

  1420. from

  1421. continuing

  1422. in

  1423. office

  1424. but

  1425. he

  1426. that

  1427. is

  1428. Jesus

  1429. holds

  1430. his

  1431. priesthood

  1432. permanently

  1433. because

  1434. he

  1435. continues

  1436. forever

  1437. consequently

  1438. he

  1439. is

  1440. able

  1441. to

  1442. save

  1443. to

  1444. the

  1445. uttermost

  1446. those

  1447. who

  1448. draw

  1449. near

  1450. to

  1451. God

  1452. through

  1453. him

  1454. since

  1455. he

  1456. always

  1457. lives

  1458. to

  1459. make

  1460. intercession

  1461. for

  1462. them

  1463. now

  1464. listen

  1465. to

  1466. this

  1467. because

  1468. this

  1469. should

  1470. have

  1471. echoes

  1472. of

  1473. everything

  1474. we've

  1475. just

  1476. read

  1477. for

  1478. it

  1479. is

  1480. indeed

  1481. fitting

  1482. that

  1483. we

  1484. should

  1485. have

  1486. such

  1487. a

  1488. high

  1489. priest

  1490. holy

  1491. innocent

  1492. unstained

  1493. separate

  1494. from

  1495. sinners

  1496. and

  1497. exalted

  1498. above

  1499. the

  1500. heavens

  1501. he

  1502. has

  1503. no

  1504. need

  1505. like

  1506. those

  1507. high

  1508. priests

  1509. to

  1510. offer

  1511. sacrifices

  1512. daily

  1513. first

  1514. for

  1515. his

  1516. own

  1517. sins

  1518. and

  1519. then

  1520. for

  1521. those

  1522. of

  1523. the

  1524. people

  1525. since

  1526. he

  1527. did

  1528. this

  1529. once

  1530. for

  1531. all

  1532. when

  1533. he

  1534. offered

  1535. up

  1536. himself

  1537. for

  1538. the

  1539. law

  1540. appoints

  1541. men

  1542. in

  1543. their

  1544. weakness

  1545. as

  1546. high

  1547. priests

  1548. but

  1549. the

  1550. word

  1551. of

  1552. the

  1553. oath

  1554. which

  1555. came

  1556. later

  1557. than

  1558. the

  1559. law

  1560. appoints

  1561. a

  1562. son

  1563. who

  1564. has

  1565. been

  1566. made

  1567. perfect

  1568. forever

  1569. friends

  1570. do you

  1571. see

  1572. this

  1573. God

  1574. has

  1575. chosen

  1576. Jesus

  1577. and

  1578. anointed

  1579. him

  1580. and

  1581. consecrated

  1582. him

  1583. and

  1584. ordained

  1585. him

  1586. to

  1587. be

  1588. ultimately

  1589. our

  1590. high

  1591. priest

  1592. and

  1593. he

  1594. has

  1595. clothed

  1596. him

  1597. with

  1598. beauty

  1599. and

  1600. with

  1601. glory

  1602. that

  1603. is

  1604. unmatched

  1605. that

  1606. actually

  1607. reflects

  1608. the

  1609. fullness

  1610. of

  1611. the

  1612. glory

  1613. of

  1614. God

  1615. and

  1616. friends

  1617. Jesus

  1618. as

  1619. he

  1620. took

  1621. on

  1622. human

  1623. flesh

  1624. he

  1625. took

  1626. on

  1627. the

  1628. name

  1629. of

  1630. humanity

  1631. and

  1632. he

  1633. identified

  1634. with

  1635. us

  1636. so

  1637. that

  1638. he

  1639. might

  1640. bear

  1641. before

  1642. God

  1643. our

  1644. names

  1645. and

  1646. represent

  1647. us

  1648. completely

  1649. fully

  1650. as a

  1651. man

  1652. as a

  1653. human

  1654. being

  1655. and

  1656. finally

  1657. he

  1658. came

  1659. in

  1660. the

  1661. wonder

  1662. of

  1663. God's

  1664. plan

  1665. he

  1666. came

  1667. not only

  1668. as the

  1669. high

  1670. priest

  1671. who

  1672. needed

  1673. no

  1674. sacrifice

  1675. for

  1676. himself

  1677. but

  1678. he

  1679. came

  1680. as

  1681. the

  1682. sacrifice

  1683. as

  1684. well

  1685. he

  1686. as

  1687. the

  1688. high

  1689. priest

  1690. offered

  1691. up

  1692. himself

  1693. as

  1694. the

  1695. perfect

  1696. sacrifice

  1697. because

  1698. he

  1699. the

  1700. sinless

  1701. one

  1702. could

  1703. die

  1704. for

  1705. us

  1706. to

  1707. atone

  1708. for

  1709. our

  1710. sin

  1711. he

  1712. the

  1713. sinless

  1714. one

  1715. could

  1716. walk

  1717. into

  1718. the

  1719. holy

  1720. of

  1721. holies

  1722. and

  1723. not

  1724. die

  1725. and

  1726. not

  1727. be

  1728. burned

  1729. up

  1730. and

  1731. so

  1732. he

  1733. walks

  1734. into

  1735. the

  1736. heavenly

  1737. holy

  1738. of

  1739. holies

  1740. and

  1741. he

  1742. lays

  1743. his

  1744. own

  1745. blood

  1746. and

  1747. his

  1748. own

  1749. life

  1750. on

  1751. that

  1752. mercy

  1753. seat

  1754. to

  1755. cover

  1756. his

  1757. people

  1758. so

  1759. that

  1760. all

  1761. who

  1762. are

  1763. in

  1764. Christ

  1765. may

  1766. approach

  1767. God

  1768. and

  1769. friends

  1770. we've

  1771. read

  1772. this

  1773. and

  1774. we

  1775. have

  1776. to

  1777. keep

  1778. reading

  1779. it

  1780. because

  1781. it's

  1782. the

  1783. right

  1784. way

  1785. to

  1786. close

  1787. this

  1788. section

  1789. of

  1790. Ephesians

  1791. in

  1792. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  1793. chapter

  1794. 10

  1795. listen

  1796. to

  1797. what

  1798. the

  1799. benefit

  1800. of

  1801. Christ

  1802. as

  1803. our

  1804. high

  1805. priest

  1806. is

  1807. for

  1808. us

  1809. therefore

  1810. sisters

  1811. and

  1812. brothers

  1813. since

  1814. we

  1815. have

  1816. confidence

  1817. to

  1818. enter

  1819. the

  1820. holy

  1821. places

  1822. by

  1823. the

  1824. blood

  1825. of

  1826. Jesus

  1827. by

  1828. the

  1829. new

  1830. and

  1831. living

  1832. way

  1833. he

  1834. opened

  1835. for

  1836. us

  1837. through

  1838. the

  1839. curtain

  1840. that

  1841. is

  1842. through

  1843. his

  1844. flesh

  1845. and

  1846. since

  1847. we

  1848. have

  1849. a

  1850. great

  1851. priest

  1852. over

  1853. the

  1854. house

  1855. of

  1856. God

  1857. let

  1858. us

  1859. draw

  1860. near

  1861. with

  1862. a

  1863. true

  1864. heart

  1865. in

  1866. full

  1867. assurance

  1868. of

  1869. faith

  1870. with

  1871. our

  1872. hearts

  1873. sprinkled

  1874. clean

  1875. from

  1876. an

  1877. evil

  1878. conscience

  1879. in

  1880. our

  1881. bodies

  1882. washed

  1883. with

  1884. pure

  1885. water

  1886. let

  1887. us

  1888. hold

  1889. fast

  1890. the

  1891. confession

  1892. of

  1893. our

  1894. hope

  1895. without

  1896. wavering

  1897. for

  1898. he

  1899. who

  1900. promised

  1901. is

  1902. faithful

  1903. and

  1904. let

  1905. us

  1906. consider

  1907. how

  1908. to

  1909. stir

  1910. up

  1911. one

  1912. another

  1913. to

  1914. love

  1915. and

  1916. good

  1917. works

  1918. not

  1919. neglecting

  1920. to

  1921. meet

  1922. together

  1923. as

  1924. the

  1925. habit

  1926. of

  1927. son

  1928. but

  1929. encouraging

  1930. one

  1931. another

  1932. and

  1933. all

  1934. the

  1935. more

  1936. as

  1937. you

  1938. see

  1939. the

  1940. day

  1941. dawning

  1942. friends

  1943. because

  1944. of

  1945. Jesus

  1946. we

  1947. as

  1948. sinful

  1949. people

  1950. can

  1951. know

  1952. a

  1953. holy

  1954. God

  1955. and

  1956. in

  1957. fact

  1958. he

  1959. comes

  1960. and

  1961. he

  1962. says

  1963. I

  1964. will

  1965. dwell

  1966. not

  1967. amongst

  1968. my

  1969. people

  1970. but

  1971. in

  1972. my

  1973. people

  1974. as

  1975. his

  1976. Holy

  1977. Spirit

  1978. comes

  1979. into

  1980. the

  1981. heart

  1982. of

  1983. all

  1984. who

  1985. place

  1986. their

  1987. faith

  1988. in

  1989. Jesus

  1990. Christ

  1991. and

  1992. are

  1993. made

  1994. alive

  1995. in

  1996. Christ

  1997. God

  1998. dwells

  1999. with

  2000. us

  2001. because

  2002. of

  2003. Jesus

  2004. our

  2005. great

  2006. high

  2007. priest

  2008. let us

  2009. not

  2010. neglect

  2011. such

  2012. a

  2013. great

  2014. salvation

  2015. and

  2016. let

  2017. us

  2018. draw

  2019. near

  2020. to

  2021. God

  2022. let's

  2023. pray

  2024. Lord

  2025. thank

  2026. you

  2027. for

  2028. the

  2029. provision

  2030. of

  2031. Jesus

  2032. our

  2033. high

  2034. priest

  2035. and

  2036. Lord

  2037. thank

  2038. you

  2039. for

  2040. the

  2041. glory

  2042. that

  2043. he

  2044. had

  2045. and

  2046. Lord

  2047. thank

  2048. you

  2049. that

  2050. by

  2051. his

  2052. work

  2053. we

  2054. may

  2055. draw

  2056. near

  2057. to

  2058. you

  2059. we

  2060. pray

  2061. this

  2062. in

  2063. Jesus

  2064. name

  2065. amen
