  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. Turn with me in your Bibles to Colossians chapter 2.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  3. If you're looking in one of the few Bibles, it is page 984.

  4. We're continuing through this little but dense and powerful letter of the Apostle Paul,

  5. written to what was probably a small church in a relatively insignificant city,

  6. but it's a letter that has resounded through the ages and that has been passed on ever since then

  7. and has strengthened generations of Christians in their faith in Christ.

  8. So, let me read Colossians 2.

  9. We are reading verses 6 to 15 this morning.

  10. Hear now God's Word.

  11. Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,

  12. rooted and built up in Him, and established in the faith,

  13. just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

  14. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit,

  15. according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world,

  16. and not according to Christ.

  17. For in Him, the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,

  18. and you have been filled in Him,

  19. who is the head of all rule and authority.

  20. In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands,

  21. by putting off the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ.

  22. Having been buried with Him in baptism,

  23. in which you were also raised with Him through faith,

  24. in the powerful working of God who raised Him from the dead.

  25. And you who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh,

  26. God made alive together with Him.

  27. Having forgiven us all our trespasses by canceling the record of debt

  28. that stood against us with its legal demands,

  29. this He set aside, nailing it to the cross.

  30. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame

  31. by triumphing over them in Him.

  32. About five years ago, the movie Twelve Years a Slave came out.

  33. It tells the true story of an African-American man named Solomon Northup,

  34. who grew up in upstate New York in the early 1800s.

  35. He was an educated businessman.

  36. He owned a 50-acre farm.

  37. He was a talented musician.

  38. And he was a devoted husband and father.

  39. But one day, in 1841, two men who were coming through town

  40. invited him to go along with them to New York City

  41. as part of a traveling circus.

  42. They said they needed a violinist and wanted him.

  43. Work was scarce at the time.

  44. They promised him some good money.

  45. He always wanted to see the city, so he went.

  46. But when they got there, they didn't put on any shows.

  47. They instead asked him to go further south.

  48. The circus was still in Washington, D.C.

  49. They said, come with us down there.

  50. And then once you get there, the circus will be ready to go north

  51. because it's getting towards summertime

  52. and the weather's growing warmer.

  53. They paid him some money for the time he had given them already.

  54. They promised him more money.

  55. They flattered him, and he went along with them.

  56. Two days after he arrived in Washington, D.C.,

  57. he was poisoned, beaten, chained,

  58. and shipped to Louisiana to be sold as a slave.

  59. The two men who had seemed so generous and kind,

  60. who had flattered him and fed him,

  61. who had paid him and promised so much to him,

  62. had kidnapped him and sold him into captivity.

  63. In the passage we're looking at today,

  64. the Apostle Paul is concerned that what happened to Solomon North

  65. physically would not happen to us spiritually.

  66. Verse 8, see to it that no one takes you captive.

  67. That word can mean kidnap or carry off as a prisoner of war.

  68. Paul is warning the Christians in Colossae against empty philosophies,

  69. against deceitful promises that only result in spiritual bondage.

  70. And Paul is saying, just as much as you would keep your distance

  71. from someone who wanted to deceive you and kidnap you

  72. and enslave you physically,

  73. you should also keep your distance from anything

  74. which would lead you into spiritual bondage and powerlessness.

  75. And just as there are very real dangers to our bodies

  76. in this fallen world, Paul says,

  77. there are also very real dangers to our souls.

  78. And we should not be naive or unaware

  79. or living in denial of them.

  80. But Paul's strategy in these verses

  81. is not to list all the spiritual dangers that we can face

  82. and describe them and elaborate on them

  83. and give us specific instructions for how to face them all.

  84. There's some of that in other parts of the New Testament.

  85. But in this passage, Paul points us to three things we can count on,

  86. three things which will help us,

  87. that can protect us from being taken in

  88. by deceitful promises, by empty words.

  89. Paul points us to the foundation we have in Christ,

  90. to the fullness we have in Christ,

  91. and to the freedom we have in Christ.

  92. Foundation, fullness, freedom.

  93. We're going to look at each of these themes one by one.

  94. So first, the foundation we have in Christ.

  95. This is verses six to seven.

  96. Therefore, as you receive Christ Jesus the Lord,

  97. so walk in Him.

  98. Now, this verse is really the hinge

  99. on which the whole book of Colossians turns.

  100. The whole book of Colossians, in a nutshell, is verse six.

  101. As you receive Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.

  102. In the beginning of the letter,

  103. Paul gave thanks for how the Colossians had received Christ.

  104. This is chapter one, verses three to eight.

  105. He said, the gospel has come to you.

  106. You heard it and understood the grace of God in truth.

  107. And then Paul went on to pray that they would walk in Him.

  108. That they would walk in a manner worthy of the Lord,

  109. bearing fruit in every good work, verse 10 of chapter one.

  110. And then in chapter one, verses 15 to 23,

  111. Paul reminded the Colossians of who is Christ Jesus the Lord.

  112. He was not, He is the firstborn over all creation,

  113. the one in whom all things hold together,

  114. and the one who made peace through His blood

  115. that He shed on the cross.

  116. Broadly speaking, all of Colossians that we've looked at so far

  117. focuses on the first half of verse six.

  118. As you receive Christ Jesus the Lord.

  119. And the second half of Colossians that we're starting to jump into

  120. from chapter two, verse eight, to chapter four, verse six,

  121. the rest of chapter four is closing greetings,

  122. but is about walking in Christ.

  123. It gives specific warnings and instructions

  124. about how to live with Christ Jesus as our Lord.

  125. Martin Luther said,

  126. the life of a Christian is a life of daily repentance and faith.

  127. That's actually, that's how you become a Christian

  128. in the first place, right?

  129. By repenting, that means turning from sin

  130. and faith, trusting in Jesus.

  131. And that's also how you grow as a Christian,

  132. is every day turning away from sin

  133. and trusting in Christ and living out of that trust.

  134. So chapter two of Colossians gives us three warnings.

  135. Verse eight,

  136. see to it that no one takes you captive.

  137. Verse 16,

  138. therefore let no one pass judgment on you.

  139. Verse 18,

  140. let no one disqualify you.

  141. Then in chapter three,

  142. we'll see some more positive instructions.

  143. Seek the things that are above.

  144. Chapter three, verse one.

  145. Chapter five,

  146. put to death what is earthly in you.

  147. Verse 12,

  148. put on as God's chosen ones,

  149. holy and beloved,

  150. really the qualities of Christ.

  151. And he goes into a long list there.

  152. Compassion,

  153. kindness,

  154. patience,

  155. and love.

  156. And so on.

  157. So we could zoom out from verse six

  158. and see the whole of the book,

  159. but if we zoom back in

  160. to verse seven,

  161. Paul gives us four pictures

  162. of what it looks like

  163. to walk in Christ.

  164. Or as we might say,

  165. to build on the foundation

  166. that we have in Christ.

  167. First picture,

  168. rooted like a tree.

  169. This verb is in the perfect tense,

  170. which often indicates

  171. the ongoing result

  172. of a completed action

  173. in the past.

  174. In other words,

  175. what that means is that

  176. by receiving Christ,

  177. we have already been

  178. rooted in Christ.

  179. We read,

  180. our first reading

  181. was John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  182. where Jesus said,

  183. I am the vine,

  184. you are the branches.

  185. Right?

  186. You're already connected

  187. to Jesus

  188. in a life-giving way

  189. if you're one of His disciples,

  190. if you're one of His followers.

  191. We've already been rooted.

  192. So the New American Standard

  193. translates,

  194. walk in Him having been

  195. firmly rooted.

  196. Now the rest of the verbs

  197. in this sentence

  198. are in the present tense,

  199. which simply indicates

  200. an ongoing process.

  201. Being built up,

  202. being established,

  203. abounding in thanksgiving.

  204. But rooted is sort of

  205. the beginning of that,

  206. having been rooted.

  207. But there's an ongoing result

  208. of having been rooted in Christ

  209. is that our roots

  210. are to grow ever deeper

  211. in Him.

  212. We've been connected

  213. to Christ

  214. and we're meant to be,

  215. to grow down

  216. into Christ

  217. more and more.

  218. One verse

  219. in the Bible

  220. that goes with this image

  221. is Jeremiah 17.

  222. It said,

  223. Blessed is the man

  224. who trusts in the Lord,

  225. whose trust is the Lord.

  226. He is like a tree

  227. planted by water

  228. that sends out

  229. its roots by the stream.

  230. It does not fear

  231. when heat comes,

  232. for its leaves remain green.

  233. It is not anxious

  234. in the year of drought,

  235. for it does not cease

  236. to bear fruit.

  237. That's the picture

  238. of someone

  239. who has received Christ

  240. and who is walking in Him,

  241. whose roots are growing deeper

  242. every day.

  243. But the second metaphor

  244. is sort of a contrast.

  245. We're not just growing deeper,

  246. we're also growing up.

  247. We're being built up

  248. like a house.

  249. Most often in the New Testament,

  250. the metaphor of a house

  251. or a temple

  252. is used to describe

  253. the church.

  254. Not only the individual Christian,

  255. but the community

  256. of God's people.

  257. So Ephesians 2.20,

  258. Ephesians and Colossians,

  259. Ephesians sort of expands

  260. on a lot of the things

  261. that are in Colossians.

  262. So often some of the,

  263. many of the ideas

  264. that are in Colossians,

  265. you'll find a parallel

  266. in Ephesians,

  267. partly because Paul

  268. was probably writing

  269. these letters

  270. around the same time.

  271. He was writing to churches

  272. that were closely located

  273. to each other.

  274. Anyway,

  275. we could go into more

  276. of a relationship

  277. between Colossians and Ephesians,

  278. but we won't do that now.

  279. But Ephesians 2.20

  280. says this,

  281. you are members

  282. of the household of God

  283. built on the foundation

  284. of the apostles and prophets,

  285. Christ Jesus himself

  286. being the chief cornerstone

  287. in whom the whole structure

  288. being joined together

  289. grows into a holy temple

  290. in the Lord.

  291. You also

  292. are being built together

  293. into a dwelling place

  294. for God by the Spirit.

  295. You see,

  296. being a Christian

  297. isn't just a private endeavor.

  298. It's not just

  299. sort of quietly growing

  300. our roots down

  301. deeper into Christ.

  302. It's also a public project

  303. that we're engaged in together,

  304. a community project

  305. that we're being built up

  306. to be a display

  307. of God's glory

  308. to the world.

  309. Now,

  310. I hope that many of you

  311. will stay after church

  312. to hear our presentation

  313. of the proposed building project,

  314. but that's not

  315. an appropriate application

  316. of this verse.

  317. The primary application

  318. of this verse

  319. is that we would be

  320. looking for ways

  321. to build each other up

  322. in faith and hope and love.

  323. And honestly,

  324. the building project

  325. will only

  326. bring glory to God

  327. if we're constantly

  328. building one another up

  329. spiritually

  330. and building

  331. on the foundation of Christ

  332. and building each other up

  333. in the truth

  334. and in the grace of Jesus.

  335. All right,

  336. third metaphor,

  337. right?

  338. We've seen rooted like a tree,

  339. built up like a house,

  340. established in the faith

  341. just as you were taught.

  342. Now,

  343. that word established

  344. was often used

  345. to describe legal contracts

  346. or judicial verdicts.

  347. Established,

  348. confirmed,

  349. settled,

  350. verified,

  351. proven valid.

  352. All of those

  353. would be similar ideas.

  354. Paul wanted his hearers

  355. to have a confident assurance

  356. that the Christian faith,

  357. which they had been taught,

  358. is true and reliable

  359. so that they wouldn't

  360. easily be swayed.

  361. Again,

  362. he expresses the same idea

  363. in Ephesians 4,

  364. 14 to 15.

  365. He says,

  366. so that we may no longer

  367. be like little children

  368. tossed to and fro

  369. by the waves

  370. and carried about

  371. by every wind of doctrine,

  372. by human cunning,

  373. by craftiness

  374. and deceitful schemes.

  375. Rather,

  376. speaking the truth in love,

  377. we are to grow up

  378. in every way into Christ.

  379. So let me ask you

  380. this question.

  381. Practically,

  382. are you seeking to grow

  383. in your understanding

  384. of the foundations

  385. of your faith

  386. in Christ

  387. so that you won't

  388. be quickly swayed

  389. when someone else

  390. expresses a different opinion?

  391. In the Middle Ages,

  392. the Christian philosopher

  393. Anselm

  394. began his most famous treatise

  395. with the concept

  396. of faith-seeking understanding.

  397. He said,

  398. on the one hand,

  399. you can't insist

  400. on understanding everything

  401. before you believe anything.

  402. That's not how

  403. human life works.

  404. Every one of us

  405. came out of the womb

  406. and the only way

  407. we stayed alive

  408. was by trusting someone

  409. who we didn't fully understand,

  410. by latching onto

  411. the breast

  412. or the bottle

  413. and trusting

  414. that what came out of there

  415. would nourish us

  416. instead of kill us.

  417. It's the only reason

  418. you are alive today.

  419. It's because you trusted,

  420. you lived by faith,

  421. without much understanding.

  422. But of course,

  423. as you grow up,

  424. the natural process

  425. of growing up

  426. involves growing

  427. in understanding

  428. and eventually

  429. learning not only

  430. to eat solid food

  431. but also to cook

  432. your own food

  433. and to cook food

  434. for somebody else.

  435. And so that's meant

  436. to be a picture

  437. of the progress

  438. of a growing Christian,

  439. right?

  440. As a new Christian,

  441. sometimes you just

  442. got to start by drinking

  443. in the Word of God

  444. as it's being fed to you,

  445. as someone else

  446. is explaining

  447. and distilling it for you

  448. and trusting

  449. that God is there

  450. and God is real

  451. and God is wiser

  452. than any of us

  453. and that He loves us

  454. no matter what we feel.

  455. But you know,

  456. growing Christians

  457. don't just stop there.

  458. They don't just stop

  459. with believing something

  460. that they don't

  461. really understand.

  462. Anselm said this,

  463. he said,

  464. I do not endeavor,

  465. O Lord,

  466. to penetrate

  467. your transcendence

  468. for in no way

  469. do I compare

  470. my understanding

  471. with that.

  472. But I long

  473. to understand

  474. in some degree

  475. your truth

  476. which my heart

  477. believes and loves.

  478. So are you seeking

  479. to grow

  480. in your understanding

  481. of the God

  482. that you have come

  483. to trust and believe in?

  484. You're seeking

  485. to grow

  486. in your understanding

  487. of God's ways

  488. and God's will.

  489. Are you dealing

  490. with the hard questions

  491. that other people

  492. ask you

  493. or you ask yourself

  494. rather than avoiding

  495. them out of fear?

  496. Are you getting

  497. to know the Bible

  498. better

  499. so that you're not

  500. just able to receive

  501. someone else's teaching

  502. from it but that you

  503. can pick up the Bible

  504. and read it

  505. and benefit from it?

  506. You can cook a meal

  507. for yourself

  508. as well as coming

  509. to church each Sunday

  510. and receiving the Word

  511. as it's fed to you.

  512. Are you growing

  513. in discernment

  514. so that you can listen

  515. to different people

  516. teaching the Bible

  517. and you can compare it

  518. with what it actually says

  519. and be able to say,

  520. hmm,

  521. there's a difference here.

  522. I need to

  523. eat the meat

  524. and not the bones.

  525. I need to

  526. grow in discernment.

  527. So rooted like a tree,

  528. built up like a house,

  529. established like

  530. a legal contract,

  531. forth,

  532. abounding in thanksgiving.

  533. That word abounding

  534. could refer to

  535. something that was

  536. overflowing like a fountain

  537. or it could refer

  538. to a surplus,

  539. an unexpectedly large

  540. profit from a business.

  541. All right,

  542. a whole bunch of leftovers

  543. from a feast.

  544. Paul says,

  545. we have received

  546. Christ Jesus the Lord

  547. and so our expressions

  548. of thankfulness to God

  549. should be overflowing

  550. and abounding.

  551. Seven times

  552. in this short little book

  553. of Colossians,

  554. Paul emphasizes

  555. the importance

  556. of thanksgiving.

  557. Chapter 1,

  558. verse 3,

  559. we always thank God

  560. when we pray for you.

  561. Chapter 1,

  562. verse 12,

  563. with joy giving thanks

  564. to the Father,

  565. here abounding

  566. in thanksgiving.

  567. 315,

  568. and be thankful.

  569. 316,

  570. with thankfulness

  571. in your hearts to God.

  572. 317,

  573. giving thanks to God

  574. the Father through Him.

  575. 42,

  576. being watchful in prayer

  577. with thanksgiving.

  578. Seven times

  579. Paul's reminding us

  580. of the importance

  581. of thanksgiving.

  582. Now,

  583. there's a lot

  584. that could be said

  585. about thanksgiving.

  586. But in the context

  587. of this sermon

  588. where Paul's warning them

  589. against spiritual dangers

  590. that could take them captive,

  591. a heart that is abounding

  592. in thanksgiving

  593. is a safeguard

  594. against all kinds

  595. of things,

  596. all kinds of negative

  597. thought patterns

  598. that can quickly

  599. take us captive.

  600. It's a safeguard

  601. against envy.

  602. It's a safeguard

  603. against jealousy.

  604. It's a safeguard

  605. against self-pity.

  606. It's a safeguard

  607. against entitlement.

  608. It's a safeguard

  609. against arrogance.

  610. It's a safeguard

  611. against discontentment

  612. and grumbling.

  613. Thankfulness drives

  614. all those ugly things away.

  615. And thankfulness

  616. doesn't let them gain

  617. a destructive foothold

  618. in our soul.

  619. That's why so many

  620. of the Psalms begin

  621. with the psalmist

  622. speaking to himself

  623. and saying,

  624. praise the Lord,

  625. O my soul.

  626. And all that is within me,

  627. praise his holy name.

  628. Praise the Lord,

  629. O my soul,

  630. and forget not

  631. all his benefits.

  632. So being rooted down

  633. and builded up,

  634. being established securely

  635. and abounding freely

  636. with thanksgiving,

  637. that's what it looks like

  638. to build on the foundation

  639. of Christ,

  640. to be strong and secure

  641. in our attachment

  642. to the foundation

  643. that we're building on.

  644. But that's the first point.

  645. But the second thing,

  646. which we see in verses 9 to 12,

  647. is that we not only have

  648. a solid foundation in Christ,

  649. we also have

  650. a wonderful fullness

  651. in Christ.

  652. Verse 9,

  653. That's a profound verse.

  654. And you know,

  655. you can't really get

  656. any clearer than that

  657. if you want to say

  658. Jesus is fully God.

  659. All the fullness of deity

  660. dwells in him.

  661. There's no ambiguity there.

  662. Jesus isn't sort of filled

  663. with some divinity.

  664. He isn't just deeply

  665. connected to God.

  666. He isn't just a human being

  667. who achieved closeness to God.

  668. All the fullness of deity

  669. dwells in him.

  670. There's nothing missing.

  671. And by the way,

  672. this was not just Paul's idea.

  673. Some people want to say

  674. this was just Paul's idea.

  675. But Jesus said,

  676. Matthew 11, 27,

  677. All things have been handed over

  678. to be by my Father.

  679. And no one knows the Son

  680. except the Father.

  681. And no one knows the Father

  682. except the Son.

  683. And anyone to whom

  684. the Son chooses

  685. to reveal him.

  686. Jesus, again,

  687. very clear,

  688. saying he has this intimate

  689. and close

  690. and unique relationship

  691. with God the Father.

  692. Over and over

  693. throughout the Gospels,

  694. Jesus claims to be and do

  695. what, according to the Scriptures,

  696. only God can be and do.

  697. And so you have to wrestle

  698. with that

  699. and ask the question,

  700. is he telling the truth

  701. or not?

  702. And if he's not telling the truth,

  703. then he's not a wise man

  704. and he's not a prophet

  705. you should trust

  706. and he's not a teacher

  707. you should follow.

  708. Because you shouldn't follow

  709. someone who claims

  710. to have the fullness of deity

  711. dwelling in him

  712. and claims to have

  713. an exclusive and unique

  714. connection to God

  715. if it ain't true.

  716. So it's really one way

  717. or the other.

  718. But Christians believe

  719. that Jesus is fully God.

  720. Christians believe

  721. that if you want to know God,

  722. you need look no further

  723. than the face of Jesus Christ.

  724. Jesus is God's presence

  725. and his very self.

  726. Again, this is one

  727. of the main differences

  728. between Christianity

  729. and every other religion

  730. in the world.

  731. Some religions

  732. and philosophies

  733. would say that

  734. the fullness of deity

  735. is inherently unapproachable.

  736. That humanity

  737. and deity

  738. are like oil and water.

  739. They don't,

  740. they cannot mix,

  741. they cannot inhabit

  742. the same space.

  743. But if God

  744. is truly omnipotent

  745. and beyond our comprehension,

  746. wouldn't that be limiting

  747. God's power

  748. to say that he can't

  749. fully inhabit

  750. one of his creatures?

  751. that he couldn't

  752. become a human being?

  753. How can you say

  754. that God can't do that

  755. because that's impossible?

  756. Isn't nothing impossible

  757. for God

  758. if God is truly transcendent

  759. and wise

  760. beyond our understanding?

  761. Now, other religions

  762. go the opposite way

  763. and they say

  764. God is everything

  765. and everything is God.

  766. They would have no problem

  767. with verse 9,

  768. in him all the fullness

  769. of deity dwells,

  770. but they would say

  771. sure,

  772. all the fullness

  773. of deity dwells

  774. in you and me too

  775. or like drops

  776. in the ocean.

  777. But if God

  778. is everything

  779. and everything

  780. is God,

  781. it becomes very hard

  782. to make any ultimate

  783. distinctions

  784. between good

  785. and evil

  786. or even between

  787. a human being

  788. and a piece of dirt.

  789. Isn't that important

  790. to make such distinctions?

  791. Christians.

  792. So, Christianity says

  793. that God is fundamentally

  794. different than us,

  795. that we cannot approach

  796. God on our own

  797. because of our sin,

  798. our corruption,

  799. but in his mercy

  800. and wisdom,

  801. God has made a way.

  802. God chose to enter

  803. into our space

  804. and our world

  805. and our flesh

  806. in the person

  807. of Jesus Christ

  808. so that we might know him,

  809. so that we might be

  810. reconciled to God,

  811. the Father through him,

  812. so that we might

  813. be filled

  814. with the presence of God.

  815. That's the amazing

  816. message of Christianity,

  817. that yes,

  818. there is that

  819. amazing transcendent God

  820. who's not just

  821. in and out

  822. of each one of us,

  823. and yet we can

  824. connect with him.

  825. We can be reconciled

  826. with him,

  827. and we can even have

  828. God dwelling in us

  829. through his spirit.

  830. Verse 10 goes on,

  831. not only is Christ,

  832. not only does the whole

  833. fullness of deity

  834. dwell in Christ,

  835. Paul goes on to say,

  836. you have been filled

  837. in him.

  838. You see,

  839. some people were coming

  840. to the Colossians,

  841. and they were saying,

  842. okay,

  843. you believe in Christ,

  844. that's fine.

  845. Maybe he's even necessary,

  846. but he's not sufficient.

  847. In order to really thrive

  848. and really flourish,

  849. you need something

  850. more than Christ,

  851. something other than Christ,

  852. something outside of Christ.

  853. Next week,

  854. we'll get into more

  855. of the details

  856. of what exactly

  857. they were offering

  858. and why it would have

  859. seemed so attractive,

  860. but here the details

  861. are not that important.

  862. Paul wants to remind them

  863. that all that they need

  864. is found in Christ.

  865. Paul says,

  866. live out of the fullness

  867. that is in Christ

  868. and that's been given

  869. to you

  870. as you've been united

  871. with Christ

  872. through faith.

  873. Don't be taken captive

  874. by an empty

  875. and deceptive philosophy.

  876. Now, Paul is not demonizing

  877. the discipline of philosophy

  878. in general,

  879. nor is Paul rejecting

  880. logical argument

  881. and reasoning.

  882. If you translate

  883. the Greek of verse 8 literally,

  884. it says,

  885. see that no one

  886. takes you captive

  887. by the philosophy

  888. and empty deceit.

  889. Paul's warning

  890. against the specific philosophy

  891. being taught in Colossae,

  892. which he describes

  893. in the rest of the verse.

  894. So, if you're considering

  895. being a philosophy major,

  896. this verse is not saying

  897. that it is a sin

  898. to do that.

  899. At the same time,

  900. philosophy will never save you.

  901. As one of my philosophy

  902. professors once said,

  903. philosophers say

  904. they love wisdom,

  905. but most of the time

  906. they just love arguments.

  907. A little bit more seriously,

  908. like many other

  909. academic disciplines,

  910. philosophy is perhaps

  911. most useful

  912. when we're humbled by it.

  913. In other words,

  914. when we allow it to show us

  915. how much we don't know,

  916. how much is out there

  917. in the world

  918. that is beyond

  919. our limited comprehension.

  920. How limited our reason

  921. can be

  922. and how far it gets us.

  923. But getting back

  924. to the text,

  925. verses 11 to 12

  926. show us

  927. in some rather graphic imagery

  928. what it means

  929. that we have been filled

  930. in Christ.

  931. Again,

  932. continuing with this

  933. fullness theme.

  934. Now, 11 and 12,

  935. I think,

  936. are the most dense verses

  937. in this passage.

  938. This whole passage,

  939. 8 through 15,

  940. is one long sentence

  941. in the Greek.

  942. So, Paul is just

  943. piling metaphor upon metaphor,

  944. image upon image,

  945. to paint, again,

  946. this powerful picture.

  947. He's using this rhetorical style

  948. to sort of paint a picture

  949. of the fullness

  950. and later on the freedom

  951. that we have in Christ.

  952. But 11 and 12

  953. are pretty dense,

  954. so let me go phrase by phrase.

  955. In him,

  956. you are also circumcised.

  957. Now,

  958. where does this image

  959. of circumcision come from?

  960. It comes from the Old Testament.

  961. The Old Testament,

  962. God required

  963. the male descendants

  964. of Abraham

  965. to be physically circumcised

  966. as a sign

  967. that they belong

  968. to God's covenant people.

  969. So, circumcision represented

  970. cutting off

  971. or putting away

  972. everything that displeases God

  973. and dedicating oneself

  974. fully to God

  975. for the task ahead.

  976. But verse 11

  977. is not talking about

  978. physical act of circumcision.

  979. It continues,

  980. in him you are circumcised

  981. with a circumcision

  982. made without hands.

  983. When the Bible talks

  984. about something

  985. made without hands,

  986. it's talking about

  987. something that's done

  988. by God

  989. and not by human beings.

  990. In other words,

  991. you were circumcised

  992. by God.

  993. That is spiritually cleansed

  994. and set apart.

  995. Paul's drawing on

  996. an Old Testament idea

  997. which is sometimes expressed

  998. as circumcision

  999. of the heart.

  1000. God spiritually,

1001. not just a physical act

  1002. that sort of symbolically

  1003. represented something,

  1004. but God spiritually

  1005. cleansing His people

  1006. and setting them apart

  1007. for His service.

  1008. Going on,

  1009. by putting off

1010. the body of the flesh.

1011. Now, if you look down

  1012. at verse 13,

  1013. it says,

  1014. you were dead

  1015. in the uncircumcision

  1016. of your flesh

1017. and God made you alive.

1018. And if you look down

  1019. at chapter 3, verse 9,

  1020. the same verb

  1021. put off appears.

  1022. You have put off

  1023. the old self

  1024. with its practices

  1025. and have put on

  1026. the new self.

  1027. So, the image is

1028. when we come to Christ,

  1029. it's like we're wearing

  1030. a full-body suit

  1031. that is dirty

  1032. and stinky

  1033. and stained

1034. and we've worn it forever

1035. and it's never been washed.

1036. And God strips it off of us.

  1037. He removes our uncleanness

  1038. and our inherited corruption.

  1039. And He does it,

  1040. this verse goes on,

1041. by the circumcision of Christ.

  1042. Now, that phrase

1043. could mean one of two things.

  1044. It could mean

  1045. the spiritual circumcision

  1046. that Christ Himself performs,

  1047. right?

  1048. Christ is the one

  1049. who removes

  1050. our inherited corruption

1051. and sort of cleanses us spiritually.

  1052. But more likely,

  1053. I think this phrase,

  1054. the circumcision of Christ,

  1055. actually refers

1056. to the crucifixion of Christ.

  1057. Christ,

  1058. circumcision was both

1059. an act of devotion to God

  1060. and a bloody mess.

  1061. And I think Paul's using

  1062. this metaphor

  1063. to remind us

  1064. of the greatest act

  1065. of devotion to God,

1066. which was also a bloody mess,

1067. the death of Jesus on the cross.

  1068. Through and through

1069. the death of Christ on the cross,

  1070. our uncleanness,

  1071. our corruption

  1072. can be removed

1073. and stripped off of us.

  1074. One other reason

  1075. I think Paul's referring

  1076. to Christ's death

  1077. on the cross here

1078. is that the next phrase

  1079. refers to His burial,

1080. having been buried with Him

  1081. in baptism.

  1082. Christian baptism means

  1083. we've been identified

  1084. with the death

  1085. and burial

  1086. and resurrection of Jesus.

  1087. In other words,

  1088. it's a sign

  1089. that we've experienced

  1090. what verse 11 describes,

1091. the circumcision of the heart.

1092. Christ died for our sins.

  1093. He was buried.

  1094. On the third day,

1095. God raised Him from the dead.

  1096. And now,

1097. if we have faith in Christ,

  1098. we can say,

1099. my old self died with Him

  1100. on that cross.

  1101. Christ took my stinky,

  1102. dirty, stained bodysuit.

1103. He took all of my sin

  1104. on Himself.

1105. And our sins were then

1106. buried with Him in the grave,

1107. and through faith in Him,

1108. we've been raised to new life.

  1109. That's what baptism celebrates,

  1110. that we've become

1111. a new creation in Christ

1112. by His mercy and grace

  1113. because of the death

  1114. and burial

  1115. and resurrection of Jesus.

  1116. Not only has God

  1117. stripped off

  1118. our stinky,

  1119. dirty, stained clothes,

  1120. He's washed us clean,

  1121. and He's given us

  1122. a whole new wardrobe.

  1123. He's given us

  1124. the righteousness of Christ.

  1125. He's raised us up

  1126. with His mighty power,

  1127. the same power

  1128. that raised Jesus Christ

  1129. from the dead.

  1130. And so Paul says,

  1131. the fullness of deity

  1132. dwells in Christ,

1133. and in Him you have fullness.

  1134. Fullness of cleansing.

1135. Fullness of all of your sins

  1136. being removed.

  1137. Fullness of regeneration

1138. of a new life in Christ.

  1139. Paul says,

1140. what more do you need?

1141. You can't get any more

  1142. cleansed than that.

1143. You can't get any more

  1144. empowered from something else.

  1145. No.

1146. You just need to go

  1147. deeper into Christ.

1148. Don't need to run away

  1149. anywhere else.

  1150. There's nothing else

  1151. you're missing.

  1152. There's nothing else

  1153. that any other philosophy

1154. or religion can give you

  1155. that you cannot find

  1156. in Christ.

1157. So that's the second point.

  1158. Paul says,

  1159. live into the fullness

  1160. of Christ.

  1161. Third,

  1162. verse 13 to 15,

  1163. the freedom we have

  1164. in Christ.

  1165. Foundation,

  1166. fullness,

  1167. freedom.

1168. In these last three verses,

1169. Paul points us to the freedom

  1170. we have in Christ

  1171. because of His work

  1172. on the cross.

  1173. Freedom from the guilt

  1174. of sin.

  1175. It's verse 13 and 14.

1176. And freedom from the powers

  1177. of darkness.

  1178. That's verse 15.

1179. And if you think about

  1180. what kinds of things

1181. can spiritually take us captive,

  1182. those have to be

1183. at the top of the list.

  1184. Right?

  1185. Guilt and shame

1186. and the powers of darkness.

  1187. Guilt and shame

  1188. can enslave us.

  1189. Look at the imagery

  1190. Paul uses in 13 and 14,

  1191. the record of debt

  1192. that stood against us.

  1193. Verse 14,

  1194. that word can mean

  1195. an IOU,

1196. signed by one's own hand,

  1197. or a legal bond.

  1198. Some people even think

  1199. that Paul was referring

  1200. to a common idea

  1201. in his day

  1202. that there was

  1203. a heavenly register

  1204. of deeds

  1205. in which a record

  1206. of your wrongdoings

  1207. was kept.

  1208. And there's a list

1209. in the presence of God.

  1210. You see,

  1211. this is something

  1212. we can't simply overlook

  1213. or ignore.

  1214. It's something

  1215. that doesn't go away

1216. just because we forget about it

1217. or choose not to think about it

1218. or live in denial of it.

  1219. As God's image bearers,

1220. we owe Him full obedience

  1221. and none of us

1222. have come anywhere near that.

  1223. If we measure ourselves

  1224. up against the standard

  1225. of God's holy law,

  1226. we have all transgressed.

1227. We owe God a debt.

  1228. There's no way

1229. we can pay it off.

1230. Even if I did not sin

  1231. for an entire year,

  1232. guess what?

1233. I would simply be doing

  1234. my duty to God

  1235. because He made me

  1236. in His image

  1237. and that's what I owe Him.

  1238. I owe Him everything.

  1239. So there's no way

1240. you can pay anything back

  1241. because obedience to God

1242. is not paying God back

  1243. for our sins.

  1244. It's simply

1245. what we owe Him already.

  1246. We're in a hole.

1247. We have no way out.

  1248. And some of you

  1249. know very well

  1250. what that feels like.

  1251. The fear

  1252. that grips us,

  1253. the sense of hopelessness

  1254. that overwhelms us

1255. when we think of the debt

1256. that we owe to God

  1257. and the record

  1258. of our past sins.

  1259. The vain attempts

  1260. to cleanse ourselves

1261. and hide our shameful failures

  1262. from others.

  1263. The anger and despair

  1264. that fills us

  1265. when the futility

  1266. of those efforts

  1267. is exposed

  1268. and the underlying feeling

  1269. of worthlessness

  1270. that haunts us.

  1271. But verse 14

  1272. is wonderful news.

  1273. He forgave us

  1274. all our trespasses.

1275. Not just some of them

  1276. but all of them.

  1277. Sometimes I've asked people

  1278. who are struggling

  1279. with receiving

  1280. God's forgiveness,

  1281. did Jesus Christ

  1282. die on the cross

1283. for some of your sins

1284. or for all of your sins?

1285. And they almost always say

  1286. oh well

  1287. like all.

  1288. Right?

  1289. Because you realize

  1290. that it would be

1291. it doesn't make any sense

  1292. to say some.

1293. Are you living that way?

  1294. Or do you think

  1295. there's something

1296. that you've done in the past

1297. that there is no way

  1298. that God could forgive?

  1299. He forgave us

  1300. all our trespasses.

  1301. trespasses.

  1302. He canceled

  1303. the record of debt.

1304. He didn't just reduce it.

1305. He didn't just refinance it.

  1306. He erased it.

  1307. He wiped it away.

  1308. He set it aside.

  1309. That's actually

  1310. an interesting phrase

  1311. that literally means

1312. he took it out of the middle.

  1313. In an ancient courtroom

  1314. the record of debt

  1315. along with other

  1316. signed statements

  1317. would be placed

  1318. right in the middle

  1319. of the courtroom.

1320. But now what Paul is saying

1321. is the list of accusations

1322. that stood in the middle

  1323. has been nailed

1324. to the cross of Christ.

  1325. Jesus paid it all.

  1326. We can know forgiveness

  1327. and freedom

  1328. from enslaving guilt

  1329. and shame.

  1330. There's freedom

1331. from the guilt of sin

  1332. in Jesus Christ.

  1333. Verse 15 tells us

  1334. there's also freedom

1335. from the powers of darkness.

  1336. God disarmed

  1337. the rulers

  1338. and authorities

  1339. and put them

  1340. to open shame

  1341. by triumphing over them

  1342. in Christ.

  1343. You might say

1344. what exactly does that mean?

  1345. Who are these rulers

  1346. and authorities?

  1347. Well verse 1

  1348. chapter 1 verse 16

  1349. says that the rulers

  1350. and authorities

  1351. in heaven

  1352. and on earth

  1353. have been created

  1354. by Christ

  1355. were created

  1356. through Christ

  1357. and for Christ.

  1358. And in chapter 2 verse 10

  1359. which we read

  1360. we read that Christ

  1361. is the head

  1362. of all rule

  1363. and authority.

  1364. In other words

  1365. no authority

  1366. stands above

  1367. the eternal

  1368. son of God.

  1369. There is no one

  1370. that can overrule

  1371. or override

  1372. what Jesus

  1373. decrees.

  1374. But it's also evident

  1375. from verse 15

  1376. and elsewhere in scripture

  1377. that these rulers

  1378. and authorities

1379. that Paul is speaking of

  1380. in both heaven

  1381. and on earth

  1382. have rebelled against

  1383. the rightful authority

  1384. of Christ.

  1385. So Ephesians 6

  1386. speaks of

  1387. rulers and authorities

  1388. cosmic powers

  1389. over this present darkness

  1390. spiritual forces

  1391. of evil

  1392. in the heavenly places.

  1393. Paul may also

  1394. be referring

  1395. to earthly rulers

  1396. and authorities

  1397. that is power structures

  1398. in this world

  1399. that have become

  1400. bent and twisted

  1401. toward carrying out

  1402. Satan's evil designs.

  1403. What he's saying here

1404. is that on the cross

  1405. God triumphed

  1406. over all

  1407. the evil

  1408. powers.

  1409. Think about

  1410. what happened

  1411. when Jesus

  1412. was nailed

  1413. to the cross.

  1414. He was condemned

  1415. to die

  1416. by the rulers

  1417. and authorities

  1418. of Rome

  1419. and of Israel.

  1420. Their power

  1421. was bent

  1422. toward accomplishing

  1423. the evil designs

  1424. of Satan himself.

  1425. But paradoxically

  1426. when it seemed

  1427. that the powers

  1428. had triumphed

  1429. over Jesus

  1430. Jesus was actually

  1431. triumphing

  1432. over the powers.

  1433. And T. Wright

  1434. put it this way

  1435. these powers

  1436. stripped him

  1437. naked

  1438. held him up

  1439. to public contempt

  1440. and celebrated

  1441. a triumph over him.

  1442. But in verse 15

  1443. Paul declares

  1444. that on the cross

  1445. God was stripping

  1446. them naked

  1447. disarming them.

  1448. It's the same word

  1449. as put off

  1450. in verse 11.

  1451. God was holding

  1452. them up

  1453. to public contempt

  1454. put them

  1455. to open shame

  1456. and leading

  1457. them in his own

  1458. triumphal

  1459. possession

  1460. in Christ.

  1461. The crucified

  1462. Messiah was in fact

  1463. their rightful

  1464. Lord.

  1465. The cross

  1466. therefore

  1467. becomes the

  1468. source of hope

  1469. for all

  1470. who are held

  1471. captive

  1472. under the rule

  1473. of powers

  1474. which are hostile

  1475. to God

  1476. enslaved

  1477. in fear

  1478. and suspicion.

  1479. Christ breaks

  1480. the last hold

  1481. that the powers

  1482. had over his people

  1483. by dying

  1484. on their behalf.

  1485. he now welcomes

  1486. us into

  1487. God's new

  1488. family.

  1489. What that means

  1490. is that the cross

  1491. of Jesus

  1492. gives hope

  1493. to all of God's

  1494. people who are

  1495. oppressed by

  1496. hostile rulers

  1497. and authorities

  1498. whether those

  1499. are spiritual

  1500. powers,

  1501. demons,

  1502. or corrupt

  1503. human authorities.

  1504. They will not

  1505. have the last

  1506. word.

  1507. Christ has

  1508. triumphed

  1509. and he will

  1510. have the last

  1511. word.

  1512. Are there demons

  1513. that are afflicting

  1514. you?

  1515. We don't always

  1516. talk a lot

  1517. about demons

  1518. in some

  1519. of the churches

  1520. in the West

  1521. but they're

  1522. real.

  1523. Are there demons

  1524. that are afflicting

  1525. you?

  1526. Are there addictions

  1527. that threaten

  1528. to overcome

  1529. you?

  1530. Do you believe

  1531. that your future

  1532. is determined

  1533. by curses

  1534. or spells

  1535. or other words

  1536. that people

  1537. have spoken

  1538. over your life

  1539. in the past?

  1540. Verse 15

  1541. says,

  1542. none of these

  1543. hostile rulers

  1544. and authorities

  1545. can stand

  1546. before the

  1547. triumphing

  1548. power of the

  1549. crucified

  1550. and risen

  1551. Lord Jesus.

  1552. They are enemies

  1553. but they are

  1554. defeated enemies

  1555. so stand firm

  1556. in the name

  1557. of Jesus Christ

  1558. and do not

  1559. believe their

  1560. lies.

  1561. Verse 15

  1562. also gives hope

  1563. to Christians

  1564. who are persecuted

  1565. and oppressed

  1566. by earthly rulers

  1567. and authorities

  1568. who are carrying

  1569. out Satan's

  1570. evil designs.

  1571. no matter

  1572. how strong

  1573. and how unyielding

  1574. they may seem

  1575. they do not

  1576. have the final

  1577. word.

  1578. Christ triumphed

  1579. through his cross

  1580. and he leads us

  1581. in triumphal

  1582. procession

  1583. even when we

  1584. suffer injustice

  1585. as Jesus

  1586. himself did.

  1587. And just as

  1588. Christ was raised

  1589. from the dead

  1590. we can be

  1591. confident

  1592. that all God's

  1593. people

  1594. will one day

  1595. be vindicated.

  1596. for 12 years

  1597. Solomon Northup

  1598. was a slave

  1599. and his story

  1600. is one of

  1601. perseverance

  1602. and endurance.

  1603. It doesn't come

  1604. out in the movie

  1605. but if you read

  1606. the book

  1607. it's also evident

  1608. that he was

  1609. sustained by his

  1610. faith in Christ.

  1611. But 12 years

  1612. after he was

  1613. kidnapped and

  1614. sold into slavery

  1615. he was working

  1616. in the fields

  1617. of Louisiana

  1618. one morning

  1619. he saw two

  1620. men approaching

  1621. neither of whom

  1622. he recognized

  1623. one was an

  1624. attorney from

  1625. his home

  1626. state of New

  1627. York.

  1628. He wrote this

  1629. as my eyes

  1630. rested on his

  1631. countenance

  1632. a world of

  1633. images thronged

  1634. my brain

  1635. a multitude

  1636. of well-known

  1637. faces

  1638. my wife

  1639. Ann's

  1640. and the dear

  1641. children's

  1642. and my old

  1643. dead fathers

  1644. all the scenes

  1645. and associations

  1646. of childhood

  1647. and youth

  1648. all the friends

  1649. of other

  1650. and happier

  1651. days

  1652. until at last

  1653. the perfect

  1654. memory of the

  1655. man recurred

  1656. to me

  1657. and throwing

  1658. up my hands

  1659. towards heaven

  1660. I exclaimed

  1661. in a voice

  1662. louder than

  1663. I could utter

  1664. in a less

  1665. exciting moment

  1666. Henry B.

  1667. Northup

  1668. thank God

  1669. thank God

  1670. in an instant

  1671. I comprehended

  1672. the nature

  1673. of his business

  1674. and felt

  1675. that the hour

  1676. of my deliverance

  1677. was at hand

  1678. I seized

  1679. my old

  1680. acquaintance

  1681. by both hands

  1682. I could not

  1683. speak

  1684. I could not

  1685. refrain from

  1686. tears

  1687. throw down

  1688. that sack

  1689. Northup said

  1690. your cotton

  1691. picking days

  1692. are over

  1693. he was

  1694. finally

  1695. vindicated

  1696. he became

  1697. an abolitionist

  1698. he lived the rest

  1699. of his life

  1700. as a free man

  1701. now his

  1702. vindication

  1703. wasn't complete

  1704. because those

  1705. who had kidnapped

  1706. and enslaved him

  1707. were prosecuted

  1708. but were let

  1709. off

  1710. without anyone

  1711. being punished

  1712. there was not

  1713. full justice

  1714. and of course

  1715. there wasn't

  1716. full justice

  1717. for many other

  1718. people

  1719. who remained

  1720. in slavery

  1721. their whole

  1722. lives

  1723. but the promise

  1724. for every

  1725. Christian

  1726. is that

  1727. however

  1728. incompletely

  1729. it may happen

  1730. in this world

  1731. or however

  1732. much it may

  1733. happen in this

  1734. world

  1735. that the day

  1736. of your

  1737. vindication

  1738. will one

  1739. day come

  1740. that the powers

  1741. and authorities

  1742. will not

  1743. have the last

  1744. word

  1745. Paul says

  1746. see to it

  1747. that no one

  1748. takes you

  1749. captive

  1750. do not

  1751. be hopeless

  1752. build on the

  1753. foundation

  1754. you have in

  1755. Christ

  1756. live in the

  1757. fullness

  1758. revel in the

  1759. fullness

  1760. that you have

  1761. in Christ

  1762. and stand

  1763. firm in the

  1764. freedom you

  1765. have in Christ

  1766. and know

  1767. that he is

  1768. the Lord

  1769. who will one

  1770. day be

  1771. completely

  1772. victorious

  1773. and we will

  1774. stand with him

  1775. let us pray

  1776. father we pray

  1777. that you would

  1778. help us to

  1779. to build on

  1780. the foundation

  1781. of Christ

  1782. to be rooted

  1783. down and built

  1784. up

  1785. to be

  1786. established

  1787. and abounding

  1788. in thanksgiving

  1789. we pray that we

  1790. would know the

  1791. fullness that is

  1792. in Christ

  1793. and that we

  1794. would go deeper

  1795. and deeper

  1796. into the

  1797. fullness

  1798. that you have

  1799. given to us

  1800. and we pray

  1801. that we would

  1802. stand firm in

  1803. the freedom

  1804. that you have

  1805. purchased for us

  1806. the freedom

  1807. from guilt

  1808. and shame

  1809. the freedom

  1810. from the powers

  1811. and authorities

  1812. which threaten

  1813. us

  1814. we pray

  1815. that

  1816. we would

  1817. walk

  1818. in Christ

  1819. just as we

  1820. have received

  1821. Christ

  1822. the Lord

  1823. we pray this

  1824. in his name

  1825. amen

  1826. joy

  1827. and

  1828. Lord

  1829. say

  1830. just لل

  1831. любой

  1832. egal

  1833. His name on fact

  1834. and the

  1835. God

  1836. and the

  1837. man

  1838. have

  1839. seen
