  1. All right.

  2. Well, good morning again.

  3. It's good to have you with us.

  4. We are continuing in our sermon series in the book of Colossians.

  5. And as we have seen along the way, the Apostle Paul has written this letter to a church that

  6. he did not plant and probably has never visited, but he's heard about God's work in them and

  7. he wants to encourage them.

  8. He wants them to have greater confidence in Christ, which is sort of the overwhelming

  9. message.

  10. But in it, you see laced at points, there are these warnings.

  11. There's a concern that he expresses.

  12. The concern is that you don't lose, that they would not lose their way in seeing that Christ

  13. is all that they really need.

  14. Paul's concern that this fledgling church as it's growing might turn aside from the right

  15. path.

  16. And like a toddler grabbing onto a pant leg that looks really familiar but ends up being

  17. the wrong mother in the crowded mall, that they would grab onto the wrong thing and be

  18. led astray from true worship of Christ and true confidence in what he has done.

  19. They might do this out of immature zeal or willful rebellion or weakness of understanding, but

  20. they might be led astray.

  21. And if you've read any commentaries on Colossian or even have been here, even if you were here

  22. last week as Pastor Greg punted on this completely from verse 8 in chapter 2 when he said, don't

  23. be deceived by these philosophies, he just said, and Pastor Matt's going to preach on that next

  24. week.

  25. This is where we're at.

  26. We're figuring out what is it that Paul's really concerned about?

  27. What are the dangers that he sees?

  28. And how is it that he expresses themselves?

  29. How is it that he sees them expressing themselves as potential false paths for the Colossians to

  30. fall down?

  31. And there has been a lot of ink spilled on what the quote-unquote Colossian heresy is.

  32. And as we start, I want to say a few things.

  33. One is that it's fascinating how creative people can be in trying to figure out what the Bible

  34. is talking about when they aren't really sure.

  35. And it's fascinating to see them look into historical context to say, oh, maybe it connects

  36. with this or maybe it connects with this.

  37. And what I do want to say with confidence, though, is that the book of Colossians is not

  38. like the book of Galatians, where there's a very clear false teaching that is being addressed

  39. very clearly and opposed very strongly.

  40. It's not even like the book of 1 Corinthians, where there are false teachers coming in and

  41. and whatever they're doing, Paul goes after them with a polemical force.

  42. And Paul doesn't take that tone here in Colossians.

  43. And I think we need to be careful not to overstate how we approach this.

  44. But it seems that Paul is laying down concerns about, hey, this is the world that you live

  45. in.

  46. This is the water that you drink and the air that you breathe.

  47. These false paths are all around you.

  48. And I want you to be aware of what they might be.

  49. I want you to see their dangers.

  50. And I want you to see Christ as sufficient in the midst of them.

  51. And that's where we're going to do this morning.

  52. We're going to dive into what those things actually look like and what some of those dynamics

  53. are.

  54. And as much as we can unpack what those problems might be, and hopefully that we will see and

  55. have benefit for ourselves as we look at these things and think, oh, I need to be aware of

  56. that danger in my own life, in our own world, in my own heart.

  57. So that's what we're going to do this morning.

  58. Let me read.

  59. We're going to look at Colossians chapter 2, starting in verse 16.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  60. We're going to read 16 to 23.

  61. And I completely forgot.

  62. Anyone want to give me a page number?

  63. 9?

  64. 84?

  65. 9.84, I'm being told.

  66. There you go.

  67. 9.84, we'll get you there.

  68. And so let's read God's word together.

  69. Therefore, let no one pass judgment on you.

  70. In questions of food and drink or with regard to a festival or a new moon,

  71. or Sabbath.

  72. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.

  73. Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about

  74. visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the head, from

  75. whom the whole body nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments grows with a growth that is from God.

  76. If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why?

  77. As if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations?

  78. Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch.

  79. Let's pray together.

  80. Let's pray together.

  81. Father, Lord, we ask for your help this morning as we look at this passage.

  82. We ask that you would make it clear to us, Lord, what you are saying, and Lord, that you would apply

  83. these truths to our hearts.

  84. Lord, I ask by your Holy Spirit, Lord, you would show us where we are prone to wander,

  85. where we are prone to fall into the dangers that Paul is concerned about in this passage,

  86. that we would see how easily we do stray from true and complete confidence in Christ.

  87. Lord, we ask that by your Spirit you would work in us, Lord, to deepen our confidence in you this morning.

  88. And Lord, I ask for your help.

  89. You would help me to speak clearly and that my words would be, Lord, in your hands,

  90. useful to proclaim the truth of the gospel.

  91. And we pray these things in Jesus' name.

  92. Amen.

  93. Don't let yourself be confused about what the gospel is really about.

  94. That's the summary of what this is about.

  95. He has three warnings, and I'm going to state them as warnings to you as we read through.

  96. So we're going to look at three warnings.

  97. The first one is in verses 16 and 17, where Paul is telling us,

  98. don't let people judge you by replacing Christ with things meant to point to Christ.

  99. What does that mean?

  100. Well, let's look at it.

  101. Paul says in verse 16,

  102. Let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink or with regard to a festival

  103. or a new moon or a Sabbath.

  104. Now, for those of us, we sort of think, huh?

  105. This is a very odd set of categories that we don't normally think about.

  106. But for a first century Christian, this would be a very common category because all of this

  107. flows from the Old Testament.

  108. All of this flows from the Jewish context out of which Christianity grew.

  109. And it seems that in the air there was a message going around of, if you really want to follow

  110. Christ, recognize that He is grounded in the Old Testament.

  111. And in the Old Testament, you had to keep these laws.

  112. You had to keep laws of eating and drinking these things and not these things to set yourself

  113. apart as being pure and faithful.

  114. You had to follow these patterns and rituals of a yearly calendar of festivals and sacrifices

  115. and offerings because this is how you worship God in the Old Testament.

  116. And it seemed that there was not only a strong exhortation, hey, this is really valuable to do,

  117. but even a condemnation.

  118. If you don't do these, you're not really a Christian.

  119. Now, look, we need to understand this carefully.

  120. The Old Testament law was good in that it meant it was there to display the dynamics of God's kingdom

  121. to show us the fabric of His character.

  122. And it teaches about the ways of His salvation.

  123. It established a righteousness and gave us standards for God's kingdom,

  124. but it was powerless to change us.

  125. And we see this so clearly in other places.

  126. The law could not save us.

  127. And that's why Christ came.

  128. In fact, the law was given to point to that helplessness

  129. and to point to the need for a Savior who is greater than us,

  130. one who could actually keep the law that we could never keep.

  131. One who could actually be righteous in ways that we never could.

  132. But as in verse 17, we see clearly,

  133. those things, the Old Testament laws, were shadows.

  134. And by shadows, that doesn't mean murky or mysterious.

  135. It means these things are signposts.

  136. These were forerunners pointing ahead to a truth.

  137. Again, in Galatians, we see the law was a tutor, a teacher to instruct us on our need for a Savior.

  138. And this is what this is pointing to.

  139. And so we don't need to, as believers in Christ,

  140. submit to the laws of the Old Testament anymore

  141. for our salvation, for our standing with God.

  142. We need to look to them to know the character of God and the ways of His kingdom,

  143. but we don't need to submit to it as for the means of our salvation.

  144. And it seems that there were those in the Colossian context

  145. who would be promoting this idea.

  146. Real Christians are not only those who believe in Jesus,

  147. but who keep the law too.

  148. You've got to do it both.

  149. And you've got to especially do these ritual parts.

  150. You've got to keep the ceremonial law.

  151. You've got to follow the patterns.

  152. Now, I doubt that there are many of us here today who struggle with this

  153. and think, oh, man, I had pork on Sunday or on Saturday.

  154. Maybe I shouldn't have done that because I believe in Jesus.

  155. You don't have to worry about pork.

  156. Thank God.

  157. That's a good thing.

  158. But what I do want to recognize is that the same impulse

  159. that I think was in a first century Jew to want to gravitate towards that

  160. can be a heart impulse for us as well.

  161. We love to have a standard of external conformity

  162. that we can try to meet to look good and to please God.

  163. We love to create rules and laws.

  164. We love to, and even when we're explicitly not doing it,

  165. we implicitly often do it over and over again.

  166. You're only a real Christian if you do this or don't do that.

  167. We love it because it creates an insider and an outsider dynamic.

  168. We're the ones who do it right.

  169. And you poor people out there, well, do you see?

  170. That's what he's concerned about, that you're not just doing it,

  171. but you're passing judgment on people about what they're doing.

  172. And these external things are easier for us to do.

  173. I know that I can do these things, and then I can say,

  174. I'm doing it right, aren't I?

  175. And isn't that good?

  176. Rather than the incredibly humbling call of the gospel,

  177. which is to be transformed by the power of God.

  178. We are to grow in righteousness.

  179. We are to honor God with everything we do.

  180. We are to schedule our whole life around worshiping him.

  181. But as we'll see in chapter 3,

  182. the heart of that is not about laws and rituals,

  183. but it's about character transformation.

  184. Putting on Christ and living as a Christian,

  185. as a follower of Christ,

  186. is not about keeping these external laws

  187. as much as it is being transformed

  188. so that with humility and kindness and gentleness

  189. and patience and self-control

  190. and forgiveness and love,

  191. spurring one another on in our hearts.

  192. This is what the true signs of following Christ are.

  193. And that in Christ,

  194. we actually find the power to live them out.

  195. I don't know if you've ever been hiking

  196. and lost the trail.

  197. It's kind of bewildering when it happens.

  198. You're halfway up a mountain.

  199. You know you want to get up there,

  200. or at least that's where you think.

  201. But suddenly you don't know

  202. what the next 50 yards looks like.

  203. And it could go that way.

  204. It could go that way.

  205. It could go that way.

  206. And I've done this.

  207. You fan out.

  208. Where's the next blaze?

  209. Where's the next trail?

  210. But friends, if you found the blaze,

  211. would you then stop and say,

  212. woo, we found the blaze.

  213. Now we know where we're going.

  214. All right, we're done.

  215. Let's party.

  216. We're going to camp out here and celebrate

  217. because we have found the blaze.

  218. Friends, this is what the problem that Paul has

  219. with those who would want to impose the law.

  220. They found the blazes,

  221. but never got to the point.

  222. They didn't get to the destination

  223. that the blazes were leading to,

  224. which was Christ.

  225. And somehow they're making the signposts

  226. the point rather than the end.

  227. And we need to be aware that we too might do the same thing.

  228. We are free to follow Christ.

  229. Free from obeying the law for the basis of our justification

  230. and acceptance with God.

  231. Free from those patterns.

  232. Now look, I need to say this well

  233. because you could hear this and think,

  234. great, so I don't have to worry about those things at all.

  235. I don't have to do anything.

  236. Well, no, let me say two things.

  237. One is that we need to recognize

  238. that this freedom does have some limits to it.

  239. The limit is that we do make Christ the center of our lives.

  240. There are boundary markers for the people of God,

  241. but the boundary markers for the people of God

  242. are not the external performance of certain things,

  243. but it is actually the believing faith in Christ

  244. for our salvation.

  245. It is looking back at chapter 2, 11 through 15

  246. and believing that in Christ the fullness of God dwelt

  247. and in Christ God has done everything we need.

  248. That the condemnation that is ours

  249. has been nailed to the cross.

  250. That by the resurrection from the dead

  251. the power of sin and death has been broken.

  252. And by his being seated at the right hand of God

  253. we now know there's no power in heaven

  254. that can control us.

  255. And we have to believe in that

  256. and trust in that as the central point

  257. and as the focal point

  258. and as the foundation

  259. and as the goal of our lives.

  260. This is the boundary marker for true Christianity.

  261. And we need to recognize that the gospel

  262. and trusting in the gospel is that.

  263. The second thing we need to say

  264. is that there's a lot of wisdom out there

  265. about how we cling to Christ

  266. and how we pursue that.

  267. Scripture has given us patterns

  268. maybe even New Testament commands.

  269. We need to be in God's word.

  270. We need to be praying.

  271. We need to be in fellowship with one another.

  272. We need to be giving and serving

  273. in God's kingdom and in God's church

  274. for the glory of God.

  275. We need to be gathering with other believers.

  276. I don't need to tell you that

  277. because you're here.

  278. But we need to be gathering

  279. with other believers.

  280. These are all normal parts

  281. of those who follow Christ.

  282. These are means of grace

  283. that are so clear in the New Testament.

  284. They are not laws.

  285. But they are patterns

  286. that is wisdom given to us

  287. on how we are meant to do that.

  288. So we need to hold them

  289. not as basis of judgments

  290. but as gifts from God

  291. to recognize how it is

  292. that we actually pursue

  293. a knowledge of God in Christ.

  294. And look, there's a whole other level

  295. of things too.

  296. You may have been super helped

  297. by Dave Ramsey

  298. on how to manage your finances

  299. to the glory of God.

  300. You may have found

  301. that a certain time management program

  302. has been your salvation

  303. and how to organize

  304. your chaotic life

  305. so that you can actually

  306. serve God the way you want to.

  307. There are all sorts of things

  308. but you know what we do?

  309. We then become the apostles

  310. for time management

  311. or Dave Ramsey

  312. or whatever else it is.

  313. The things that we have found

  314. particularly helpful

  315. in the application level

  316. of pursuing Christ.

  317. We then glorify

  318. and raise to a level

  319. of law,

  320. of expectation.

  321. then we judge other people

  322. when they don't do that.

  323. Oh, you watch Netflix.

  324. Well, okay.

  325. Good for you.

  326. I'll pray for you.

  327. You know,

  328. or whatever it is, right?

  329. I mean,

  330. I could go on it.

  331. We are so prone to do that

  332. and I don't want to go on and on

  333. because all of us

  334. are prone to do it

  335. and we need to be careful

  336. not to judge one another

  337. in these things

  338. even as we ought to be free

  339. to seek

  340. and to share wisdom

  341. with one another.

  342. Hey, this is what's been helpful

  343. for me.

  344. This has been,

  345. but these things are only helpful

  346. in as much as they point to Christ

  347. and help us to Christ

  348. and when we cling to them

  349. and think,

  350. well, if you have this,

  351. this is really going to like

  352. jumpstart your spiritual life.

  353. No,

  354. Christ will jumpstart

  355. your spiritual life.

  356. The Holy Spirit

  357. will jumpstart

  358. your spiritual life

  359. and maybe he might use

  360. something like that

  361. along the way

  362. and if so,

  363. praise God

  364. and be thankful for it

  365. and don't condemn it

  366. and don't get up,

  367. but also don't deify it

  368. and make it everything.

  369. So the passage warns us

  370. of a danger

  371. of judging,

  372. judging others

  373. by replacing Christ

  374. with things that point to Christ

  375. in our lives.

  376. The passage goes on

  377. in verse 18 and 19

  378. points to a second danger

  379. and that is

  380. don't let others exclude you

  381. on the demand

  382. of a deeper spiritual life

  383. apart from Christ

  384. rather than a deeper spiritual life

  385. in Christ.

  386. Did you get all that?

  387. It's a little complicated.

  388. Let me read that again.

  389. Don't let others exclude you

  390. on the demand

  391. of a deeper spiritual life

  392. apart from Christ

  393. rather than a deeper

  394. spiritual life

  395. in Christ.

  396. Look with me again

  397. in verse 18

  398. so we see the language.

  399. Let no one disqualify you.

  400. It's a strong word,

  401. disqualification.

  402. If you're a world football

  403. aficionado,

  404. I mean a soccer fan,

  405. then you know what it means

  406. to be disqualified, right?

  407. You get a red card

  408. in a game

  409. when you have been,

  410. when you have transgressed

  411. the boundaries,

  412. the laws,

  413. when you have,

  414. you've become disqualified

  415. from continuing in the game

  416. and you are removed

  417. from the field

  418. and you're removed

  419. from the stadium.

  420. You're removed from your team

  421. because of that

  422. and that's the picture here.

  423. Some of the language behind it

  424. is like an umpire

  425. or like an Olympic referee

  426. who disqualifies a runner

  427. for leaving the starting blocks

  428. too early

  429. or for interfering

  430. with another runner.

  431. It's a very strong word.

  432. It's a very categorical word.

  433. You're being separated out

  434. and divided from

  435. and excluded from something.

  436. On what basis

  437. is Paul concerned

  438. that that exclusion

  439. could happen?

  440. Because as we've seen earlier,

  441. there is an exclusion.

  442. If you are not in Christ,

  443. you are separate

  444. from the people of Christ.

  445. But that's not the problem

  446. he's dealing with.

  447. He's dealing with the problem

  448. within a church community,

  449. within a body

  450. that people are excluding others

  451. on a basis of

  452. some kind of demand

  453. for what I'm calling

  454. a deeper spiritual life.

  455. Look with me again

  456. in verse 18.

  457. See how he describes it.

  458. Insisting on asceticism

  459. and worship of angels,

  460. going on in details

  461. about visions,

  462. puffed up

  463. and without reason

  464. by his sensuous mind.

  465. Now, this is where

  466. all the ink has been spilled

  467. in commentaries

  468. about what in the world

  469. is he really referring to.

  470. If the first part

  471. was pretty clear

  472. that it was coming

  473. from some kind of impulse

  474. towards a return to Judaism

  475. or submitting to the Jewish law,

  476. the Old Testament law,

  477. here we have

  478. a broad number of terms

  479. that people have

  480. really wrestled with.

  481. And I don't think

  482. anyone has succeeded

  483. in convincingly identifying

  484. particular strands

  485. of first century religious

  486. or mystical practices

  487. that ought to be

  488. pegged as

  489. this is what it was talking about.

  490. But I do think

  491. that actually

  492. as you read this,

  493. the patterns are pretty clear.

  494. Right?

  495. On what basis

  496. is this disqualification

  497. happening?

  498. Well, one,

  499. the basis all seems

  500. to be in some form

  501. of experiential religion.

  502. All right?

  503. On one end,

  504. you have asceticism.

  505. I'm going to deny

  506. my body.

  507. I'm going to deny

  508. the goodness

  509. of the physical world

  510. that I live in.

  511. I see that it's dangerous,

  512. that it could lead me

  513. away from pure

  514. spiritual worship.

  515. And I'm going to do that.

  516. This is the kind of thing

  517. that led monks

  518. to, in the fourth century,

  519. live their lives

  520. literally on the tops

  521. of pillars in the desert

  522. to separate themselves

  523. from the world

  524. to try to subdue

  525. their body.

  526. This is the kind of impulse

  527. that leads us

  528. at times

  529. to self-destructive patterns

  530. of bodily control.

  531. we treat the world

  532. as a,

  533. this impulse

  534. is to treat the world

  535. as a,

  536. as a,

  537. the physical world

  538. as something

  539. that wasn't good

  540. and created by God.

  541. And call that spiritual.

  542. We set them up

  543. in contrast

  544. to one another.

  545. there are lots of ways

  546. this could live itself

  547. out today.

  548. But I think that

  549. recognizing that

  550. it's,

  551. it's an experience.

  552. If I can pursue

  553. this hard enough,

  554. I,

  555. I'm going to show

  556. that I'm really serious

  557. and that I'm really gonna,

  558. I'm really devoted

  559. and that I'm really

  560. committed

  561. to sacrificing

  562. for Christ.

  563. but it's more

  564. about our own

  565. experience

  566. of devotion

  567. than it is about

  568. truly submitting

  569. all things

  570. to God.

  571. Let me go on.

  572. The second thing,

  573. spiritualism.

  574. The worship

  575. of angels

  576. and going on

  577. insisting on visions.

  578. Well,

  579. yeah,

  580. this is the one

  581. that people really

  582. don't understand

  583. exactly what he's

  584. talking about

  585. or even remotely

  586. what he's talking

  587. about at one level.

  588. Some people even

  589. think that it's

  590. talking about

  591. being joined

  592. with the angels

  593. in their worship

  594. of God.

  595. Other people think

  596. that it's more

  597. worshiping angels

  598. as the object

  599. of their devotion

  600. but whatever it is,

  601. it's a spiritual practice

  602. that has an experiential

  603. component

  604. that includes

  605. visions

  606. and dreams

  607. and some kind

  608. of ecstatic

  609. experience

  610. that doesn't seem

  611. to have Christ

  612. in it

  613. at the end

  614. of the day.

  615. But the focal point

  616. is how it's relating

  617. to angels.

  618. And it seems

  619. that some

  620. were suggesting

  621. that real

  622. Christianity

  623. looks like

  624. having those

  625. experiences.

  626. Then the third

  627. part of this,

  628. he says,

  629. puffed up without

  630. reason by his

  631. sensuous mind.

  632. The core

  633. of these,

  634. this pursuit

  635. of experiential

  636. religion

  637. is that it's

  638. actually

  639. deeply,

  640. deeply

  641. self-centered.

  642. It is about

  643. me.

  644. I am pursuing

  645. these kinds

  646. of experiences.

  647. I am pursuing

  648. this kind

  649. of discipline.

  650. I am pursuing

  651. these kinds

  652. of things

  653. in a way

  654. that puffs

  655. me up

  656. and that

  657. tickles

  658. the fancy

  659. of my own

  660. fallen heart.

  661. When it talks

  662. about a sensuous

  663. mind,

  664. the word

  665. there is

  666. actually

  667. fleshly.

  668. And in Paul,

  669. the fleshly

  670. mind is the

  671. mind that

  672. rather than

  673. submitting to

  674. God and

  675. receiving from

  676. God,

  677. sets itself

  678. up against

  679. God in

  680. some kind

  681. of proud

  682. rebellion

  683. or resistance.

  684. sense.

  685. So whatever

  686. this is,

  687. this pursuit

  688. of experience

  689. of God

  690. in certain

  691. ways,

  692. it ultimately

  693. is a very

  694. self-centered

  695. spirituality.

  696. I had an

  697. experience with

  698. this quite a

  699. while ago.

  700. Some friends

  701. who I worked

  702. with got really

  703. excited about

  704. visions and

  705. how God was

  706. going to work

  707. in a particular

  708. way,

  709. in a particular

  710. face,

  711. in a particular

  712. space,

  713. in a particular

  714. time.

  715. And the further

  716. along it went,

  717. it got more

  718. and more

  719. particular and

  720. there's this

  721. invitation,

  722. come in and

  723. be a part of

  724. this.

  725. But at its

  726. core,

  727. what I saw

  728. was exactly

  729. what Paul

  730. was warning

  731. about here.

  732. That it

  733. didn't bless

  734. and invite

  735. and express

  736. the glory of

  737. God in the

  738. face of Christ

  739. with a gracious

  740. winsomeness,

  741. but it

  742. excluded.

  743. Why weren't

  744. you at the

  745. prayer meeting?

  746. Don't you

  747. really want

  748. to seek

  749. God to

  750. work here?

  751. Well,

  752. I know you

  753. haven't had

  754. this vision,

  755. but I have,

  756. so why don't

  757. you believe me

  758. and get on

  759. board with

  760. this particular

  761. plan?

  762. Oh,

  763. you're not

  764. fasting with

  765. us again

  766. today?

  767. maybe you're

  768. not really

  769. committed to

  770. us.

  771. This is the

  772. kind of

  773. disqualification

  774. that happened

  775. in the

  776. circumstance

  777. that I saw

  778. it happening

  779. in.

  780. It's one of

  781. those times

  782. where we

  783. see when

  784. excessive

  785. zeal for

  786. the glory of

  787. God gets

  788. warped.

  789. These are

  790. some of the

  791. ways we can

  792. see the

  793. cracks show.

  794. When it

  795. becomes a

  796. self-centered

  797. zeal,

  798. this kind

  799. of

  800. disqualification

  801. and separation

  802. and judgmental

  803. spirit is

  804. exactly what

  805. we can look

  806. for as a

  807. fruit of

  808. not true

  809. growth in

  810. Christ,

  811. but some

  812. kind of

  813. self-centered

  814. counterfeit.

  815. We become

  816. the church

  817. of mean

  818. girls,

  819. spiritually,

  820. when we

  821. do that.

  822. Right?

  823. I've got it

  824. together.

  825. What's wrong

  826. with you?

  827. This is where

  828. God is leading

  829. us.

  830. If you're not

  831. with us,

  832. you're against

  833. us.

  834. Oh,

  835. you don't

  836. have that?

  837. I feel

  838. sorry for

  839. you.

  840. There's so

  841. many different

  842. ways that we

  843. can express

  844. it.

  845. Paul says,

  846. don't let

  847. this happen

  848. God.

  849. Because in

  850. fact, what

  851. these people

  852. are pursuing,

  853. maybe with

  854. honest hearts

  855. and misguided

  856. direction,

  857. maybe with

  858. much more

  859. nefarious

  860. hearts,

  861. what they're

  862. pursuing is

  863. a real

  864. knowledge of

  865. God and

  866. a true

  867. deep

  868. spirituality.

  869. And what

  870. verse 19

  871. reminds us is

  872. that we know

  873. where we find

  874. that.

  875. We've already

  876. seen it.

  877. Christ is the

  878. head of the

  879. body.

  880. He is the

  881. kingpin.

  882. He is the

  883. control center

  884. for the

  885. church.

  886. And in the

  887. church, as we

  888. live under

  889. Christ's headship,

  890. he is the

  891. one who

  892. causes the

  893. growth.

  894. And do you

  895. notice that one

  896. of the things

  897. that Paul says

  898. in verse 19,

  899. but from

  900. whom the

  901. whole body

  902. nourished and

  903. knit together

  904. through its

  905. joints and

  906. ligaments,

  907. it's this

  908. picture of

  909. the totality.

  910. Nobody is

  911. excluded from

  912. a being under

  913. the head.

  914. If you're in

  915. Christ, you're a

  916. part of the

  917. body.

  918. And if you're

  919. a part of the

  920. body, then

  921. you are in.

  922. And Christ

  923. is able to

  924. make the

  925. growth that

  926. God wants to

  927. do in your

  928. life.

  929. In Christ, we

  930. are not

  931. disqualified.

  932. But as we

  933. saw in

  934. chapter 1,

  935. verse,

  936. where is it?

  937. Verse,

  938. I should

  939. have wrote

  940. this down.

  941. Verse 12,

  942. giving thanks

  943. to the

  944. Father who

  945. has qualified

  946. you to

  947. share in

  948. the inheritance

  949. of the saints

  950. in light.

  951. He has

  952. delivered us

  953. from the

  954. domain of

  955. darkness and

  956. transferred us

  957. to the

  958. kingdom of

  959. his beloved

  960. son in

  961. whom we

  962. have redemption,

  963. the forgiveness

  964. of sins.

  965. Christ has

  966. qualified us

  967. to be God's

  968. people and

  969. to be in

  970. him to

  971. experience the

  972. salvation that

  973. delivers us from

  974. sin and death

  975. and the kingdom

  976. of darkness and

  977. brings us into

  978. God's kingdom

  979. and God's

  980. people.

  981. Paul is

  982. saying to

  983. the Colossian

  984. church,

  985. don't think

  986. there's something

  987. more.

  988. The lure of

  989. a higher life,

  990. of a higher

  991. vision of

  992. Christianity

  993. is somehow

  994. separate from

  995. the grace that

  996. brought you in.

  997. It's not true.

  998. It's an illusion.

  999. It's a false

  1000. path.

  1001. Because the

  1002. true path

  1003. continues in the

  1004. path that you

  1005. started in,

  1006. which is in the

  1007. path of Christ.

  1008. It is the

  1009. gospel of Jesus

  1010. Christ, the

  1011. grace of God

  1012. meeting us in

  1013. our fallenness

  1014. and our

  1015. inability to

  1016. turn to

  1017. him.

  1018. He says,

  1019. we have a

  1020. head and

  1021. that's where

  1022. you're going

  1023. to find all

  1024. the spirituality

  1025. that you

  1026. want.

  1027. You want

  1028. more?

  1029. You want a

  1030. deeper walk

  1031. with God?

  1032. Don't go

  1033. somewhere else.

  1034. Go more

  1035. into Christ.

  1036. And yes,

  1037. you may have

  1038. visions.

  1039. as you

  1040. pursue Christ.

  1041. And yes,

  1042. you may

  1043. practice

  1044. self-discipline

  1045. of your

  1046. schedule or

  1047. of your

  1048. eating or

  1049. of your

  1050. physical,

  1051. of all sorts

  1052. of things.

  1053. You may do

  1054. those things.

  1055. But they're

  1056. all in service

  1057. to pursuing

  1058. Christ and

  1059. knowing him.

  1060. He is the

  1061. one in whom

  1062. we have the

  1063. deepest

  1064. spiritual

  1065. life.

  1066. Friends,

  1067. Paul is

  1068. then leading

  1069. to his

  1070. third and

  1071. final warning

  1072. in chapter

  1073. two,

  1074. which builds

  1075. and expands

  1076. on what he's

  1077. already said.

  1078. In verses

  1079. 20 through

  1080. 23,

  1081. he says,

  1082. don't be

  1083. deceived by

  1084. the empty

  1085. promises of

  1086. man-made

  1087. religion when

  1088. Christ is all

  1089. you really

  1090. need.

  1091. Look with

  1092. me again

  1093. at this.

  1094. You may

  1095. have,

  1096. if with

  1097. Christ you

  1098. died to

  1099. the elemental

  1100. spirits of

  1101. the world,

  1102. why is if

  1103. you were

  1104. still alive

  1105. in the

  1106. world?

  1107. Do you

  1108. submit to

  1109. the regulations,

  1110. do not

  1111. handle,

  1112. do not

  1113. touch,

  1114. taste,

  1115. do not

  1116. touch,

  1117. referring to

  1118. things that

  1119. all perish as

  1120. they are used

  1121. according to

  1122. human precepts

  1123. and teaching?

  1124. These have

  1125. indeed

  1126. appearance of

  1127. wisdom in

  1128. promoting

  1129. self-made

  1130. religion and

  1131. asceticism and

  1132. severity to the

  1133. body,

  1134. but they are of

  1135. no value in

  1136. stopping the

  1137. indulgence of

  1138. the flesh.

  1139. Paul paints

  1140. out a picture.

  1141. Before you

  1142. were in

  1143. Christ,

  1144. you lived in

  1145. a world and

  1146. you were under

  1147. the influence of

  1148. these elemental

  1149. spirits,

  1150. and these elemental

  1151. spirits,

  1152. maybe they're more

  1153. personal,

  1154. spiritual,

  1155. like demonic

  1156. forces,

  1157. maybe they're

  1158. more cultural

  1159. or just human

  1160. dynamics in a

  1161. fallen world.

  1162. world.

  1163. I don't think we

  1164. need to determine

  1165. or say which

  1166. one.

  1167. I think we're

  1168. influenced by

  1169. both.

  1170. He says,

  1171. you lived in a

  1172. world whereby

  1173. people sought

  1174. means of

  1175. justifying

  1176. themselves,

  1177. of belonging

  1178. to a people,

  1179. of changing

  1180. themselves,

  1181. of being

  1182. accepted in

  1183. the world

  1184. by external

  1185. things.

  1186. Do not

  1187. taste.

  1188. Right?

  1189. Sorry,

  1190. let's say it

  1191. right.

  1192. Do not

  1193. handle,

  1194. do not

  1195. taste,

  1196. do not

  1197. touch.

  1198. One

  1199. commentator

  1200. made it funny

  1201. that this is

  1202. actually ironic

  1203. and he's sort

  1204. of saying how

  1205. ridiculous these

  1206. rules can get.

  1207. It's kind of

  1208. like saying,

  1209. son,

  1210. I don't want

  1211. you to go on

  1212. a date with

  1213. that girl.

  1214. As a matter

  1215. of fact,

  1216. I don't even

  1217. want you to

  1218. look at that

  1219. girl.

  1220. As a matter

  1221. of fact,

  1222. you can't

  1223. even think

  1224. about that

  1225. girl.

  1226. And he's

  1227. sort of saying

  1228. this is the

  1229. extremity of

  1230. the ways that

  1231. these kind of

  1232. regulations can

  1233. go as we're

  1234. trying to

  1235. pursue

  1236. some kind

  1237. of acceptance

  1238. or belonging

  1239. or justifying

  1240. ourselves and

  1241. our lives in

  1242. this world.

  1243. It's

  1244. characterized

  1245. by rules

  1246. and it

  1247. reflects the

  1248. building of a

  1249. religious system

  1250. that is man

  1251. made.

  1252. We know

  1253. that we are

  1254. made for God

  1255. but apart

  1256. from Christ,

  1257. we don't know

  1258. how to get

  1259. there.

  1260. and we

  1261. fill that

  1262. gap in

  1263. all sorts

  1264. of ways.

  1265. We create

  1266. our own

  1267. religions

  1268. whether they

  1269. be more

  1270. spiritual or

  1271. not.

  1272. We create

  1273. our own

  1274. ways of

  1275. getting to

  1276. be acceptable

  1277. by God.

  1278. And Paul

  1279. says,

  1280. you know what

  1281. it was like

  1282. to be under

  1283. that?

  1284. That's slavery.

  1285. There's no

  1286. freedom there.

  1287. There's no

  1288. hope there.

  1289. It's an

  1290. ongoing

  1291. hamster wheel

  1292. of performance

  1293. that grinds

  1294. you till

  1295. you die.

  1296. It's a

  1297. standard of

  1298. unmeetable

  1299. expectations

  1300. that causes

  1301. you to

  1302. despair and

  1303. give up

  1304. hope

  1305. or to

  1306. succeed,

  1307. which is

  1308. even worse

  1309. because then

  1310. as a puffed

  1311. up person

  1312. you walk

  1313. around pitying

  1314. all the others

  1315. who can't do

  1316. it as well

  1317. as you can.

  1318. This is the

  1319. human heart.

  1320. Verse 23,

  1321. it says,

  1322. they have

  1323. the appearance

  1324. of wisdom

  1325. but they

  1326. have no

  1327. power.

  1328. Friends,

  1329. has it ever

  1330. occurred to

  1331. you that

  1332. we live in

  1333. an age where

  1334. we think

  1335. that humanity

  1336. ought to be

  1337. getting better?

  1338. We ought to

  1339. be improving.

  1340. We ought to

  1341. be showing

  1342. that we can

  1343. actually grow

  1344. and become a

  1345. better society

  1346. and a

  1347. better world.

  1348. As a

  1349. history major,

  1350. it's just

  1351. not true.

  1352. There are

  1353. some ways

  1354. in which

  1355. by God's

  1356. grace

  1357. things have

  1358. improved.

  1359. Wonderfully so.

  1360. There are

  1361. ways in which

  1362. God's gracious

  1363. common,

  1364. that His

  1365. common grace

  1366. is blessing

  1367. this world

  1368. in wonderful

  1369. ways.

  1370. And there are

  1371. ways in which

  1372. humanity has

  1373. progressed that

  1374. is glorious

  1375. and beautiful.

  1376. But friends,

  1377. we're not

  1378. better.

  1379. That has

  1380. come alongside

  1381. with an

  1382. ongoing

  1383. persistent

  1384. show that

  1385. in fact,

  1386. people are

  1387. sinful and

  1388. the world

  1389. has fallen

  1390. and we

  1391. can't fix

  1392. it.

  1393. And we

  1394. can't make

  1395. it better.

  1396. We can't

  1397. do it on a

  1398. societal and

  1399. a global

  1400. level and

  1401. we can't

  1402. even do it

  1403. on a personal

  1404. level.

  1405. It's what

  1406. sin of

  1407. Adam and

  1408. Eve in the

  1409. garden was

  1410. about.

  1411. God, I'd

  1412. rather create

  1413. my own

  1414. way rather

  1415. than follow

  1416. yours.

  1417. Thank you

  1418. very much.

  1419. I'll do it

  1420. myself.

  1421. And we

  1422. create our

  1423. own religions.

  1424. And Paul

  1425. says, why

  1426. would you go

  1427. back to that?

  1428. Why would you

  1429. go back to

  1430. these rules and

  1431. laws that

  1432. create these

  1433. ins and outs?

  1434. when you

  1435. have something

  1436. so much

  1437. better?

  1438. Verse 23

  1439. ends with

  1440. the fact that

  1441. these things

  1442. have no value

  1443. in stopping

  1444. the indulgence

  1445. of the flesh.

  1446. That is,

  1447. they have no

  1448. true ability

  1449. to transform

  1450. us so that

  1451. we no longer

  1452. are enslaved

  1453. to our

  1454. darkest

  1455. desires

  1456. and most

  1457. destructive

  1458. impulses.

  1459. He goes

  1460. on in

  1461. chapter 3

  1462. and this

  1463. is what

  1464. we're going

  1465. to see.

  1466. In Christ

  1467. we really

  1468. do have

  1469. all that

  1470. we need.

  1471. He looks

  1472. back,

  1473. what we

  1474. talked about

  1475. earlier in

  1476. chapter 2

  1477. verses 9

  1478. through 15.

  1479. Christ has

  1480. saved us

  1481. completely,

  1482. fully,

  1483. all that

  1484. we need.

  1485. Chapter 3

  1486. then is going

  1487. to say,

  1488. not only has

  1489. He saved

  1490. us,

  1491. but if you

  1492. want to

  1493. pursue Christ,

  1494. if you want

  1495. to know God,

  1496. if you think

  1497. that there's

  1498. more,

  1499. there is.

  1500. And it's

  1501. in Christ.

  1502. And it's

  1503. only in

  1504. Christ.

  1505. And we're

  1506. going to

  1507. see that

  1508. in Christ

  1509. there is

  1510. a power

  1511. to change

  1512. and be

  1513. transformed.

  1514. There is

  1515. a power

  1516. to put

  1517. off

  1518. patterns

  1519. of sin

  1520. and godlessness

  1521. in our

  1522. lives,

  1523. to put

  1524. off the

  1525. evil things

  1526. that continue

  1527. to destroy

  1528. our

  1529. relationships.

  1530. We have

  1531. the ability

  1532. to put

  1533. off these

  1534. things that

  1535. dishonor God

  1536. and ruin

  1537. our lives.

  1538. We can

  1539. put them

  1540. off because

  1541. of Christ

  1542. and because

  1543. we have

  1544. been transformed

  1545. and made

  1546. new in

  1547. Christ.

  1548. There is

  1549. now this

  1550. new life

  1551. that is

  1552. in Christ

  1553. for us

  1554. where He

  1555. will give

  1556. us a

  1557. character

  1558. that we

  1559. don't have

  1560. on our

  1561. own.

  1562. We're

  1563. in humility

  1564. and patience

  1565. and kindness

  1566. and gentleness

  1567. and forgiveness

  1568. and grace

  1569. and truth

  1570. and worship.

  1571. We are

  1572. able to

  1573. follow

  1574. and know

  1575. God.

  1576. and the

  1577. fullness

  1578. is there.

  1579. It's not

  1580. in these

  1581. other things.

  1582. It's not

  1583. in these

  1584. practices

  1585. of self-made

  1586. religion

  1587. of various

  1588. ways,

  1589. but it's

  1590. in Christ

  1591. that we

  1592. find these

  1593. things.

  1594. So in

  1595. closing,

  1596. if you

  1597. have found

  1598. yourself

  1599. put off

  1600. by the

  1601. empty

  1602. powerlessness

  1603. of

  1604. churchianity,

  1605. I just

  1606. made that

  1607. up.

  1608. Maybe I

  1609. didn't.

  1610. Somebody's

  1611. probably

  1612. thought about

  1613. it for

  1614. me,

  1615. but churchianity.

  1616. That's my

  1617. word for

  1618. the self-made

  1619. religion that

  1620. looks a lot

  1621. like

  1622. Christianity,

  1623. but it's

  1624. really about

  1625. ourselves and

  1626. not about

  1627. Christ.

  1628. If you

  1629. have found

  1630. yourself put

  1631. off by the

  1632. powerlessness

  1633. of it,

  1634. know that

  1635. yeah,

  1636. there's a lot

  1637. of counterfeit

  1638. out there,

  1639. but the

  1640. substance is

  1641. in Christ.

  1642. If you

  1643. have felt

  1644. yourself

  1645. excluded from

  1646. the people

  1647. of God

  1648. because they

  1649. have held

  1650. ungodly

  1651. standards,

  1652. because they

  1653. have created

  1654. these in

  1655. and out

  1656. groups that

  1657. are not

  1658. based on

  1659. scripture,

  1660. but are

  1661. based in

  1662. human religion,

  1663. know that

  1664. that's not

  1665. the gospel,

  1666. and that's

  1667. not Christ,

  1668. and that

  1669. Christ welcomes

  1670. you.

  1671. if you

  1672. are tempted

  1673. because the

  1674. long,

  1675. hard road

  1676. of fits

  1677. and starts

  1678. of pursuing

  1679. Christ can

  1680. sometimes get

  1681. really hard,

  1682. and you

  1683. think,

  1684. can't I

  1685. just skip

  1686. to the

  1687. end?

  1688. If you're

  1689. tempted to

  1690. want to

  1691. do that

  1692. by adding

  1693. on to

  1694. Christ,

  1695. heed Paul's

  1696. warnings.

  1697. Don't add

  1698. on,

  1699. but go

  1700. deeper,

  1701. go deeper

  1702. into Christ.

  1703. Come for

  1704. the next

  1705. three weeks

  1706. so you

  1707. will see

  1708. how it

  1709. is that

  1710. Paul wants

  1711. to lay

  1712. out what

  1713. there is

  1714. for us

  1715. in Christ

  1716. and see

  1717. its glory

  1718. and its

  1719. power

  1720. and be

  1721. renewed

  1722. in hope

  1723. that this

  1724. fumbling,

  1725. stumbling

  1726. walk of

  1727. faith in

  1728. Christ really

  1729. is headed

  1730. in the

  1731. right

  1732. direction

  1733. and that

  1734. Christ will

  1735. carry you

  1736. and Christ

  1737. will take

  1738. you to

  1739. the places

  1740. that you

  1741. want to

  1742. go

  1743. and that

  1744. in Christ

  1745. you will

  1746. find all

  1747. that you

  1748. need.

  1749. He really

  1750. is enough.

  1751. Let's pray.

  1752. Lord,

  1753. thank you

  1754. for this

  1755. word and

  1756. thank you

  1757. for the

  1758. pastoral

  1759. heart of

  1760. the apostle

  1761. for us

  1762. Lord,

  1763. that we

  1764. would not

  1765. miss the

  1766. glorious riches

  1767. of Christ

  1768. in whom

  1769. are hidden

  1770. all the

  1771. treasures

  1772. of wisdom

  1773. and knowledge.

  1774. Lord,

  1775. that we

  1776. would not

  1777. miss out

  1778. on that

  1779. or allow

  1780. that to

  1781. be replaced

  1782. by

  1783. counterfeit

  1784. self-made

  1785. religion.

  1786. Lord,

  1787. search our

  1788. hearts to

  1789. see us

  1790. that we

  1791. might see

  1792. ourselves

  1793. and see

  1794. how we

  1795. may be

  1796. tempted

  1797. in these

  1798. ways.

  1799. Lord,

  1800. help us

  1801. as a

  1802. church

  1803. to fight

  1804. against

  1805. cultural

  1806. developments

  1807. in our

  1808. body that

  1809. might

  1810. communicate

  1811. or build

  1812. up these

  1813. kinds of

  1814. self-made

  1815. standards.

  1816. words.

  1817. Lord,

  1818. help us

  1819. to be

  1820. faithful

  1821. and true

  1822. to the

  1823. message of

  1824. Christ

  1825. and Him

  1826. crucified,

  1827. Christ

  1828. and Him

  1829. raised

  1830. from the

  1831. dead,

  1832. Christ

  1833. the fullness

  1834. of God

  1835. and all

  1836. that we

  1837. need.

  1838. We pray

  1839. this in

  1840. Jesus'

  1841. name.

  1842. Amen.

  1843. Well,

  1844. friends,

  1845. we will

  1846. close

  1847. with a

  1848. song of

  1849. worship,

  1850. so let me

  1851. invite you

  1852. to stand

  1853. as we

  1854. do so.

  1855. what

  1856. to tend

  1857. to we

  1858. do so?

  1859. love you

  1860. love you

  1861. love you

  1862. and

  1863. that

  1864. know

  1865. how

  1866. you

  1867. love you

  1868. love me

  1869. love you

  1870. love you

  1871. love you

  1872. love you

  1873. love you

  1874. love you

  1875. love you

  1876. love you
