  1. Church, our sermon text this morning is Colossians chapter 3, verses 1 through 4.

    Colossians 3:1–4

  2. That's page 984 in the Pew Bible.

  3. Go ahead and turn there with me.

  4. Colossians chapter 3, verses 1 through 4.

    Colossians 3:1–4

  5. As we turn there and before we read, let me pray for us.

  6. Our Father, we do indeed hunger for the day.

  7. When with Christ we will stand in glory.

  8. And Father, we thank you that you've given us your clear and present word in the scriptures to speak to us as we run the race looking forward to that day.

  9. So would you equip us this morning, Father, through your word, by your spirit, that we might set our minds on Christ and live for him looking forward to that great day.

  10. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  11. Amen.

  12. Colossians chapter 3, verses 1 through 4.

    Colossians 3:1–4

  13. Let me read this for us.

  14. If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

  15. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

  16. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

  17. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

  18. So I wonder if you think people can really change.

  19. Do you remember that great scene at the end of Rocky 4?

  20. You can talk to me about it afterwards.

  21. Rocky's just beaten the Russian, right?

  22. And the great call that he has is people can change.

  23. If you take a walk through the aisles of a bookstore, you might actually get mixed messages about whether or not people can change.

  24. On the one hand, there are lots of books in the self-help section.

  25. Lots about mindfulness and recovery and change and so on.

  26. Beth told me that she saw a whole section of magazines actually devoted to this the last time she was there.

  27. So on the one hand, maybe people can change.

  28. But on the other hand, the sheer number of those books kind of makes you pause, doesn't it?

  29. If people really can change and if someone has actually figured it out, why are there so many books on the topic?

  30. And why do they keep being published?

  31. Does any of it really work?

  32. In chapter 2 of Colossians, right before the text we just read,

  33. the Apostle Paul has been exposing the emptiness of what we might call man-made spirituality,

  34. of religion apart from Christ.

  35. Whether it's rules that promise to make us good and upright,

  36. or whether it's rituals that promise to deliver exciting spiritual experiences,

  37. Paul says apart from Christ, it's all empty.

  38. That's how chapter 2 ends.

  39. Look there with me at verse 23.

  40. He says,

  41. That is,

  42. The gospel of Jesus Christ is something different.

  43. In chapter 3 of Colossians, Paul is going to show us how the new life in Christ really does change us.

  44. Not from the outside in, like the old religious rules and rituals try to,

  45. but from the inside out.

  46. The heartbeat of chapter 3, if you take a step back and look at it,

  47. the heartbeat of chapter 3 is actually found in verses 9 and 10.

  48. And there Paul says,

  49. You have put off the old self with its practices,

  50. and have put on the new self,

  51. which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

  52. For those in Christ, something deep inside has happened.

  53. You've put off your old self.

  54. You've put on the new self.

  55. And the image of God, the very image of your creator is being renewed in you.

  56. Now, verses 5 through 9 talk about putting off the old self in Christ,

  57. and verses 12 through 17 talk about putting on the new self in Christ,

  58. and we're going to get to those passages in the next two weeks.

  59. But before Paul gets to all that,

  60. there's a critical first step.

  61. Before we can put off the old self,

  62. and before we put on the new,

  63. there's a principle or a practice that undergirds all the rest,

  64. like the deep pillars that hold up a bridge.

  65. If you've been over the new Tappan Zee Bridge recently,

  66. you realize how giant those pillars are,

  67. holding up that bridge, crossing that river.

  68. Or like a foundation holding up a building.

  69. There's a practice that precedes and undergirds all of this.

  70. What is it?

  71. The opening verses of chapter 3 tell us.

  72. Verse 1 says,

  73. Seek the things that are above.

  74. And then clarifying what he means,

  75. Paul says in verse 2,

  76. Set your minds on things that are above.

  77. So the practice or the duty that undergirds all the rest of Christian living

  78. and holiness and transformation is this,

  79. that we intentionally and constantly be setting our minds

  80. on things above.

  81. In other words,

  82. if we're going to see any progress in putting off our old nature,

  83. if we're going to see any growth in putting on the new nature of holiness

  84. and Christlikeness,

  85. we have to be deliberately and daily setting our minds on things above.

  86. Now what we're going to do this morning

  87. is we're going to unpack this exhortation

  88. to set our minds on things above.

  89. And we're going to unpack it

  90. and we're going to look at it from three different angles.

  91. First, we're going to look at the object.

  92. What are these things above that we're supposed to be setting our minds on?

  93. And then second, we're going to look at the motivation.

  94. Why should we actually be doing all this in the first place?

  95. Why should we?

  96. Why can we do this?

  97. And last, we're going to look at the practice.

  98. How do we do it?

  99. What are some practical steps that we can take

  100. to be daily and deliberately setting our minds on things above?

  101. So let's begin with the object, with the what.

  102. What are these things above on which we should be setting our minds?

  103. Is Paul saying that we should have our head in the clouds all day?

  104. I mean, what are these things above?

  105. Are we just supposed to be staring at the clouds,

  106. forgetting about all of our troubles,

  107. whistling a tune as we go,

  108. daydreaming about pie in the sky,

  109. by and by,

  110. forgetting about all of our worldly cares?

  111. No, look again at verse one.

  112. If then you have been raised with Christ,

  113. seek the things that are above where Christ is,

  114. seated at the right hand of God.

  115. Whatever else Paul might mean by the things above,

  116. this much is clear,

  117. it's where Christ is.

  118. In other words,

  119. Jesus Christ is the focal point of heaven,

  120. the things above.

  121. In other words,

  122. if we have thoughts of heaven,

  123. if right now we picture the dwelling place of God in our minds,

  124. if we think about the present spiritual dimension of reality

  125. where God dwells in fullness,

  126. that's what the Bible means by heaven,

  127. by the way,

  128. if we're thinking of that,

  129. and if Christ is not there,

  130. and if Christ is not the central reality of that picture,

  131. if Christ is not the all-consuming center of its glory,

  132. and worship,

  133. and joy,

  134. and life,

  135. then we aren't thinking biblically.

  136. In Revelation chapter 5,

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  137. the apostle John is given a glimpse into heaven,

  138. given a glimpse into this spiritual dimension of reality

  139. where God dwells in fullness,

  140. and what he sees,

  141. and what he hears,

  142. is actually all creation praising Christ.

  143. They're singing,

  144. worthy is the Lamb who was slain

  145. to receive power,

  146. and wealth,

  147. and wisdom,

  148. and honor,

  149. and glory,

  150. and blessing.

  151. To set our minds on things above

  152. means above all,

  153. to set our minds on Christ.

  154. And then Paul adds this detail in verse 1,

  155. did you catch it?

  156. That Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

  157. Now that's a reference to Psalm 110,

  158. which is a psalm about the coming Messiah's enthronement

  159. and his reign.

  160. And because Jesus is that long-awaited Messiah,

  161. this expression,

  162. seated at the right hand of God,

  163. is actually one of the most common ways

  164. the writers of the New Testament

  165. talk about Jesus' ascension

  166. and exaltation in heaven

  167. 40 days after his resurrection from the dead.

  168. You see,

  169. the same Jesus who became incarnate

  170. in the Virgin Mary,

  171. who lived a perfect life under God's law,

  172. who suffered and was crucified

  173. as the atoning sacrifice for our sins,

  174. who was raised bodily from the dead

  175. on the third day in power,

  176. that same Jesus has ascended in glory

  177. and lives right now,

  178. seated at the right hand of God the Father.

  179. You see, Jesus is not just a historical figure

  180. of long ago,

  181. although he certainly lived in history.

  182. He's living and reigning right now

  183. at the right hand of God,

  184. as real and as present as he was 2,000 years ago.

  185. So as we set our minds on things above,

  186. we're above all setting our minds

  187. on the Lord Jesus ascended

  188. and seated at God's right hand.

  189. This is where we are to fix our minds.

  190. But what's the significance

  191. of Jesus' session,

  192. as it's sometimes called?

  193. That is his being seated

  194. at the right hand of God.

  195. What does it tell us about Jesus

  196. on whom we are to set our minds?

  197. Well, in the Bible,

  198. at first,

  199. Jesus' session at God's right hand,

  200. his being seated at God's right hand,

  201. means that Jesus is ruling

  202. right now from heaven.

  203. To sit at God's right hand

  204. is a royal metaphor.

  205. It means that Jesus is the one

  206. who's in control,

  207. even though the world

  208. seems out of control,

  209. even though so much of the world

  210. is at present in rebellion against God,

  211. even though the church at times

  212. seems to be so beleaguered and weak,

  213. Christ is sitting on the throne

  214. and he will return.

  215. And then on that day,

  216. all of our trials

  217. and all of our hardships

  218. will be seen for what they truly are,

  219. light and momentary afflictions

  220. that have been preparing for us

  221. an eternal weight of glory

  222. beyond compare.

  223. Second,

  224. Jesus' session at God's right hand

  225. means that his work of atonement

  226. is complete.

  227. Hebrews 10, 11, and 12

  228. says that the Old Testament priests

  229. had to stand daily at their service,

  230. offering repeated sacrifices.

  231. But,

  232. when Christ had offered for all time

  233. a single sacrifice for sins,

  234. the writer of Hebrews says

  235. he sat down

  236. at the right hand of God.

  237. He sat down

  238. because the work of atonement

  239. was finished.

  240. It was totally complete.

  241. There was nothing left to be done.

  242. All that was needed

  243. to forgive our sins

  244. and reconcile us to God

  245. had been accomplished

  246. once and for all

  247. at the cross

  248. where he,

  249. the sinless one,

  250. took the place

  251. of the sinful many

  252. and bore all their sins away.

  253. So when you set your mind

  254. on things above,

  255. when you set your mind

  256. on Christ seated

  257. at God's right hand,

  258. you set your mind

  259. on a finished work of atonement.

  260. That all that is needed

  261. for you to be reconciled

  262. to your creator

  263. has been finished.

  264. And third,

  265. Jesus' session

  266. means that we have

  267. a perfect mediator in heaven.

  268. Friends,

  269. you realize

  270. that seated at God's right hand

  271. is Jesus,

  272. our perfect high priest,

  273. who,

  274. as Hebrews 4 says,

  275. sympathizes with all

  276. of our weakness.

  277. Jesus,

  278. in every respect,

  279. has been tempted as we are

  280. yet without sin.

  281. And so we can draw near to God

  282. in confidence.

  283. We can draw near to God

  284. in confidence

  285. that the throne of God

  286. is no longer

  287. a throne of judgment,

  288. but a throne of grace.

  289. And because Jesus

  290. is seated there,

  291. we will receive mercy

  292. and find grace to help

  293. in our time of need.

  294. So there's a beginning.

  295. But you know,

  296. these three short observations,

  297. they just scratch the surface,

  298. don't they,

  299. of the glory of Christ?

  300. How else might you be

  301. setting your mind

  302. on the ascended Lord Jesus?

  303. What else

  304. of the glories

  305. and beauties

  306. and wonders of Jesus

  307. full of mercy,

  308. love,

  309. and power

  310. can we be

  311. setting our minds on today

  312. and throughout this week?

  313. It reminds me of a song

  314. we sing here at Trinity

  315. from time to time.

  316. The second verse

  317. goes like this.

  318. It says,

  319. Could we with ink

  320. the ocean fill

  321. and were the skies

  322. of parchment made,

  323. were every stock

  324. on earth

  325. a quill

  326. and every man

  327. a scribe by trade

  328. to write the love

  329. of God above

  330. would drain the ocean dry,

  331. nor could the scroll

  332. contain the whole

  333. though stretched

  334. from sky to sky.

  335. On and on

  336. we could go

  337. reflecting on Christ,

  338. our crucified,

  339. risen,

  340. and ascended Lord.

  341. But for now,

  342. we have to go

  343. to our next point

  344. because eventually

  345. we have to take

  346. the Lord's Supper

  347. this morning.

  348. So let's keep going.

  349. Our next point,

  350. we move from the what

  351. of setting our minds

  352. on Christ ascended

  353. to the why.

  354. Why on earth

  355. should we be doing that?

  356. Why can we

  357. be spiritually raised

  358. to new life in Him?

  359. The difference

  360. between a person

  361. in Christ,

  362. a genuine Christian believer,

  363. and a person

  364. not in Christ,

  365. someone who has

  366. no saving faith

  367. in Jesus,

  368. is as big

  369. and broad

  370. as the difference

  371. between life

  372. and death,

  373. friends.

  374. Apart from Christ,

  375. we remain

  376. spiritually dead

  377. to God

  378. and captive

  379. to sin

  380. and guilt

  381. and death.

  382. But through faith

  383. in Christ,

  384. we become a new creation.

  385. The old has passed away

  386. and the new has come.

  387. We're alive to God

  388. and free from sin

  389. and guilt

  390. and death.

  391. And what's true

  392. of Christ our Savior

  393. is now true of us.

  394. He has been raised,

  395. therefore we have been

  396. raised with Him

  397. spiritually now

  398. and bodily

  399. in the day to come.

  400. And Paul says,

  401. if you've been raised,

  402. then you can set

  403. your mind on things above.

  404. You're no longer

  405. captive to the old ways

  406. of seeking

  407. and thinking

  408. and setting your mind.

  409. Now that raises

  410. two important points

  411. for us, I think.

  412. The first is this.

  413. Friend,

  414. where do you stand

  415. with Jesus Christ?

  416. You see,

  417. apart from Him

  418. and our own

  419. spiritual effort

  420. and our own

  421. moral performance,

  422. we remain lifeless

  423. to God,

  424. spiritually dead.

  425. Now that's a pretty

  426. stark claim.

  427. I realize that.

  428. It's not an easy one

  429. to come to terms with

  430. at first.

  431. But you see,

  432. that's the very reason

  433. why Jesus died

  434. and rose again.

  435. Christ came in love

  436. to enter into the death

  437. of all those

  438. deserving death

  439. so that in His resurrection

  440. they might come alive

  441. to God.

  442. And the free offer

  443. of the gospel

  444. is that when we admit

  445. that we're spiritually dead

  446. apart from Christ

  447. and when we place

  448. our trust in Him alone

  449. to give us life,

  450. He does just that.

  451. He breathes new life

  452. into our hearts,

  453. He forgives all our sins,

  454. and He reconciles us

  455. to God.

  456. So friends,

  457. where do you stand

  458. with Christ today?

  459. Today,

  460. place your trust in Him

  461. and come and know

  462. what it's like

  463. to have real spiritual life.

  464. The second point is this.

  465. If you have been raised

  466. with Christ,

  467. then you are now able

  468. to set your minds

  469. on things above.

  470. In other words,

  471. your thought life

  472. need not be controlled

  473. or dominated

  474. by your old self.

  475. Those old things

  476. you used to tell yourself

  477. about yourself.

  478. the old ways

  479. you used to describe

  480. and define yourself,

  481. whether they were

  482. self-exalting

  483. or self-debasing,

  484. whether those things

  485. used to make much

  486. of yourself

  487. or whether they used

  488. to make little of yourself,

  489. whether they were thoughts

  490. full of pride

  491. or full of despair.

  492. I'm the best.

  493. I'm the worst.

  494. I'm good enough.

  495. I'm smart enough.

  496. And gosh darn it,

  497. people like me.

  498. Or I'm terrible

  499. and I'm not worthy of love.

  500. The truth is

  501. those things

  502. need no longer be

  503. where you set your mind.

  504. The truth is

  505. you've been raised

  506. with Christ.

  507. There's a new power

  508. of life in you

  509. that has overcome death

  510. and now

  511. you can set your mind

  512. on things above.

  513. You have the power

  514. to do that now,

  515. to have a whole new mindset,

  516. a whole new focus,

  517. to silence

  518. and still

  519. the old voices

  520. and to set your mind

  521. on what's really real

  522. and really true

  523. about you.

  524. So we've been raised

  525. with Christ.

  526. That's why we can set

  527. our minds

  528. on things above,

  529. but why ought we?

  530. Why should we?

  531. Paul answers that question

  532. in verses 3-4.

  533. Look there again.

  534. Why should we set

  535. our minds

  536. on things above?

  537. He says,

  538. For you have died

  539. and your life

  540. is hidden

  541. with Christ and God.

  542. When Christ

  543. who is your life

  544. appears,

  545. then you also

  546. will appear

  547. with him

  548. in glory.

  549. So why should we

  550. set our minds

  551. on things above?

  552. Paul says here,

  553. because Christ

  554. is our life.

  555. Our life

  556. is hidden

  557. with Christ

  558. and God.

  559. Hidden

  560. in the sense

  561. of safe

  562. and secure,

  563. but also hidden

  564. in the sense

  565. of waiting

  566. to be fully

  567. revealed

  568. for what it is.

  569. As verse 4 says,

  570. when Christ returns,

  571. then we will appear

  572. with him

  573. in glory.

  574. Even if our lives

  575. right now

  576. from an earthly

  577. perspective

  578. seem less

  579. than glorious,

  580. maybe you think

  581. your life

  582. feels kind of boring.

  583. Maybe it's even

  584. somewhat embarrassing

  585. to you at times

  586. and to others.

  587. Paul's saying

  588. that's not really

  589. your life.

  590. Your life

  591. is hidden

  592. with Christ

  593. and God

  594. and one day

  595. your real glory,

  596. glory received

  597. from the Son

  598. of God himself

  599. will be displayed

  600. before all creation.

  601. That's who you

  602. really are.

  603. And so we ought

  604. to daily

  605. and deliberately

  606. set our minds

  607. on things above

  608. because we so often

  609. forget

  610. that Christ

  611. is our life.

  612. Our hearts

  613. are so forgetful,

  614. aren't they?

  615. How easily

  616. do our jobs

  617. become our life?

  618. How quickly

  619. does our marital

  620. status

  621. become our life?

  622. How naturally

  623. do our hearts

  624. drift into believing

  625. that our kids

  626. are our life

  627. or our financial

  628. well-being

  629. is our life

  630. or our physical

  631. appearance

  632. or our physical

  633. ability

  634. is our life?

  635. Friends,

  636. when any of these

  637. things become

  638. our life,

  639. that is when they

  640. become the

  641. determiner of our

  642. joy and happiness,

  643. when they become

  644. the driving motivator

  645. of our thoughts

  646. and actions,

  647. then we've allowed

  648. our minds to be set,

  649. as Paul says,

  650. on earthly things.

  651. You see,

  652. when Paul says,

  653. don't set your minds

  654. on things that are

  655. on the earth,

  656. in verse 2,

  657. here,

  658. earthly things

  659. doesn't have to

  660. exclusively mean

  661. overtly sinful things,

  662. like lust or anger

  663. or greed.

  664. Those things certainly

  665. count as earthly things,

  666. but we can also be

  667. setting our minds

  668. on earthly things

  669. when we take something

  670. that's good and right

  671. in its own place

  672. and elevate it

  673. and make it our life.

  674. when you set your mind

  675. on a certain job

  676. or set your mind

  677. on having a spouse,

  678. when you place your hopes

  679. and affections

  680. and joy in that thing,

  681. whatever it is,

  682. then it's become

  683. your life.

  684. And friend,

  685. when a created thing

  686. becomes your life,

  687. we are doomed

  688. for disappointment.

  689. None of those things

  690. can hold the weight

  691. of your life.

  692. your job,

  693. whether it's wonderful

  694. or miserable,

  695. is not your life.

  696. And your marital status,

  697. whether it's one

  698. that you want

  699. or one that you don't want,

  700. it's not your life.

  701. Christ is your life.

  702. And when you set your mind

  703. on things above,

  704. you're remembering

  705. what and who

  706. your life really is.

  707. So that when temptation comes,

  708. the temptation to despair

  709. because work isn't

  710. what you want it to be

  711. or your dating life

  712. isn't what you want it to be,

  713. the temptation to act out

  714. in anger or jealousy,

  715. when temptation comes

  716. on account of those things

  717. that have become

  718. your temporary life,

  719. you can say,

  720. wait, wait, wait.

  721. No, that's not my life.

  722. Christ is my life.

  723. He's the one who loves me

  724. and gave himself for me.

  725. He's the one who sits

  726. at God's right hand

  727. and will return one day

  728. and unveil a glory in me

  729. so weighty and so real

  730. that creation will tremble

  731. with awe at the sight of us.

  732. He's my life.

  733. Not this thing,

  734. not that thing,

  735. not the other thing.

  736. The Lord of the universe,

  737. the one seated

  738. at God's right hand,

  739. the one perfect

  740. in beauty and power

  741. and love,

  742. Christ is our life, friends.

  743. I am his

  744. and he is mine.

  745. Can you say that?

  746. That's why we have to daily

  747. and deliberately

  748. set our minds

  749. on things above

  750. because Christ is your life

  751. and you must not forget.

  752. So then this principle,

  753. this duty of a Christian,

  754. this first call for us

  755. as believers in Christ

  756. is to daily

  757. and deliberately

  758. set our minds

  759. on things above.

  760. If we ask

  761. what we're to set

  762. our minds on,

  763. the answer ultimately

  764. is Christ

  765. ascended and seated

  766. at God's right hand

  767. soon to return in glory.

  768. And if we ask

  769. why we're to set

  770. our minds on him,

  771. it's because

  772. that's our true life

  773. above everything

  774. and anything else.

  775. In conclusion then,

  776. let's end

  777. by asking how.

  778. If setting our minds

  779. on things above

  780. is the critical component

  781. to living this new life

  782. in Christ,

  783. how should we go

  784. about doing it?

  785. And there's a lot

  786. that we could say here

  787. and I want to end

  788. with just three practical helps,

  789. three things

  790. to get us started

  791. to maybe prime the pump

  792. along these directions

  793. and maybe

  794. after the service

  795. downstairs over coffee

  796. or over lunch,

  797. you can talk about

  798. more ways

  799. that you've found

  800. that are helpful to you

  801. to continually

  802. set your mind

  803. on things above,

  804. to set your mind

  805. on Christ.

  806. But three things

  807. as we close.

  808. First,

  809. consider the very word

  810. set your mind.

  811. In our technological age,

  812. we specialize

  813. in easy

  814. and fast,

  815. don't we?

  816. With a simple

  817. tap of a screen

  818. on my phone,

  819. I can find information

  820. from practically

  821. anywhere in the world.

  822. Right?

  823. If I'm bored,

  824. I can entertain myself.

  825. If I'm curious,

  826. I can find an answer.

  827. We have gadgets

  828. and machines

  829. that can do anything

  830. from make our coffee

  831. to make a 3D computer

  832. model of the solar system.

  833. Writer Andy Crouch

  834. calls our time

  835. the easy everywhere age.

  836. So what Paul is telling us

  837. to do here

  838. is very countercultural,

  839. is it not?

  840. He's telling us

  841. to slow down

  842. and set our minds.

  843. The word Paul uses here

  844. combines both

  845. our thinking faculties

  846. and our faculties

  847. of desire.

  848. He's saying,

  849. set your mind,

  850. but mind here in the Bible

  851. isn't just what you think about,

  852. it's what you long for

  853. in love.

  854. Set your heart's desire

  855. on the things above.

  856. Make it your treasure

  857. and your longing.

  858. Make it your daily bread

  859. and your food.

  860. It's as if Paul is saying,

  861. slow down

  862. and think about Christ

  863. and the realities of Christ

  864. long enough

  865. so that your heart

  866. starts to warm at the fire.

  867. When I was a kid,

  868. we used to play

  869. with those little green army men.

  870. Do you remember those?

  871. And one day we found out

  872. that we could take

  873. a magnifying glass

  874. and if we held it

  875. still long enough,

  876. we could actually

  877. melt their faces off.

  878. Oh man,

  879. that was like hours of fun

  880. watching them bubble

  881. and melt away.

  882. Don't read too much

  883. into that.

  884. But here's the thing.

  885. Like a magnifying glass

  886. held out to the sun,

  887. Paul's saying

  888. that you have to hold

  889. the truths of Christ

  890. in your mind

  891. long enough

  892. until the pointed rays

  893. of his love

  894. and beauty

  895. start to melt

  896. your cold heart.

  897. That's what he's saying here.

  898. Set your mind on it.

  899. And that brings me

  900. to the second practical help.

  901. You know,

  902. oftentimes we sit down

  903. to read the Bible

  904. and pray

  905. and it's a very

  906. lifeless experience,

  907. is it not?

  908. Perhaps you've tried it.

  909. You know,

  910. a trusted Christian friend

  911. or mentor

  912. has suggested

  913. that you take

  914. the first moments

  915. of your day

  916. to spend time with God

  917. reading his word

  918. and praying

  919. and that is

  920. wonderful advice.

  921. But after reading

  922. a chapter

  923. and then turning to prayer,

  924. your mind quickly runs off

  925. to your daily tasks,

  926. your upcoming meetings,

  927. the conflict you're having

  928. with a family member,

  929. whatever it is.

  930. In other words,

  931. you try to set your mind

  932. but your mind races off.

  933. And your morning time

  934. of prayer and communion

  935. with God

  936. seems pretty fruitless.

  937. You know,

  938. one person

  939. who had the exact

  940. same experience

  941. was a guy

  942. named George Mueller.

  943. Mueller is famous

  944. actually for starting

  945. orphanages in England

  946. in the 19th century.

  947. His autobiography

  948. is an incredible

  949. story of faith.

  950. And for years,

  951. this great man of God

  952. struggled

  953. in the exact same way

  954. as you or I do.

  955. This is what he writes.

  956. He said,

  957. I often spent

  958. a quarter of an hour

  959. or half an hour

  960. or even an hour

  961. on my knees

  962. before being conscious

  963. to myself

  964. of having derived

  965. any comfort,

  966. encouragement,

  967. or humbling of soul.

  968. And often,

  969. after having suffered

  970. much from wandering

  971. of mind

  972. for the first ten minutes

  973. or a quarter of an hour

  974. or even half an hour,

  975. I only then began

  976. really to pray.

  977. We can relate to that,

  978. can't we?

  979. We kneel to pray

  980. and our mind wanders

  981. fifteen minutes,

  982. thirty minutes,

  983. and then, uh-oh,

  984. time's up

  985. and we're off to work.

  986. So how do we remedy this?

  987. Mueller writes

  988. that after ten years

  989. of frustration

  990. in prayer,

  991. he stuck at it

  992. for ten years,

  993. he had a breakthrough.

  994. He said,

  995. Now,

  996. I saw that the most

  997. important thing

  998. I had to do

  999. in the morning

  1000. before God

  1001. was to give myself

  1002. to the reading

1003. of the Word of God

1004. and to meditation on it.

  1005. That thus,

  1006. my heart might be

  1007. comforted,

  1008. encouraged,

  1009. warned,

  1010. et cetera,

  1011. and that thus,

  1012. while meditating,

  1013. my heart

  1014. might be brought

  1015. into experiential

  1016. communion with the Lord.

  1017. I began, therefore,

  1018. to meditate

  1019. on the New Testament

  1020. from the beginning

  1021. early in the morning.

  1022. You see the change.

  1023. Mueller goes on

1024. to say that his aim

  1025. in this sort of

  1026. just biblical meditation

  1027. was not to prepare

  1028. to teach

  1029. or to prepare

  1030. to minister

  1031. or to have something

  1032. useful to say

  1033. when he showed up

  1034. at work,

  1035. but simply to get

  1036. food for his soul.

1037. And then what he found,

  1038. when he focused

  1039. on meditating

  1040. on the New Testament

  1041. just to get food

  1042. for his soul,

  1043. he found that prayer

  1044. would come,

  1045. that communion

  1046. with God

  1047. would come.

  1048. You see,

  1049. instead of just

  1050. reading through a chapter

  1051. really quickly

  1052. and then jumping

  1053. into his prayer list,

  1054. Mueller slowed

  1055. way down

  1056. and said,

  1057. let me just rest

  1058. before God

  1059. and sink my mind

  1060. into what he's showing

  1061. me of himself here.

  1062. And that biblical meditation

  1063. opened up

1064. a rich walk with God.

  1065. Mueller's example

  1066. is that we meditate

1067. on the word of God.

  1068. And he clarifies

  1069. what meditation means.

  1070. He says,

  1071. it's not the simple

  1072. reading of the word

  1073. of God

  1074. so that it passes

  1075. through our minds

  1076. just as water

  1077. passes through a pipe.

1078. You ever had that experience?

1079. You wake up in the morning,

  1080. it's however early

  1081. you wake up,

  1082. 6.30,

  1083. 7.30,

  1084. 9.30 if you're in college,

  1085. whatever,

  1086. you know,

  1087. and you're like,

  1088. okay,

1089. I gotta do my Bible reading.

  1090. You read three chapters

  1091. and you can't remember

  1092. even the book

  1093. that you were reading,

1094. let alone any of the content.

  1095. I've had that happen

  1096. to me too.

  1097. Mueller says,

1098. it's not just the simple

1099. reading of the word of God

  1100. so that it passes

  1101. through our minds

  1102. just as water

  1103. runs through a pipe,

  1104. but it's considering

  1105. what we read

  1106. and pondering over it

  1107. and applying it

  1108. to our hearts.

  1109. Biblical meditation,

  1110. you see,

1111. is not emptying the mind

  1112. like Eastern religions,

1113. but it's filling our minds,

  1114. steeping our minds

1115. in the word of God.

  1116. Like a good tea,

1117. we let the word of God

  1118. steep in the water

  1119. of our minds

  1120. and our hearts

  1121. until the whole pot

  1122. is flavored

  1123. and ready to drink.

1124. So if we're gonna set

1125. our minds on things above,

  1126. practically,

1127. we have to slow down

  1128. and think

1129. until our hearts grow warm

1130. and we have to come

  1131. to Scripture

1132. as food for our souls.

  1133. You know,

  1134. better to choose

  1135. a short passage

1136. and really soak in it,

  1137. meditate on it,

  1138. asking God to reveal

1139. the glory of Christ in it

1140. than to simply read quickly

  1141. like water passing

  1142. through a pipe.

  1143. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  1144. recommended to young pastors

  1145. in training

1146. that in their personal devotions

  1147. that we confine ourselves,

  1148. he said.

  1149. We confine ourselves

1150. to a brief selected text

1151. which possibly may not be changed

  1152. for a whole week.

1153. Do you hear Bonhoeffer's advice there?

  1154. Take one passage

  1155. and meditate on it

  1156. for a whole week.

  1157. Now perhaps you want

  1158. more variety than that.

  1159. Fair enough.

  1160. But the point remains.

1161. If you have 15 or 20 minutes

  1162. in the morning, friends,

  1163. rather than read

  1164. three chapters quickly

1165. and then try to eke out

  1166. some prayer,

  1167. read one paragraph

  1168. slowly.

  1169. Really set your mind

  1170. to what's there

  1171. and you'll find

  1172. it's a very,

  1173. very different experience.

  1174. Third practice

1175. that I'll mention this morning.

1176. Not only must we slow down

  1177. and think

1178. until our hearts grow warm,

1179. not only must we meditate

  1180. on Scripture

1181. rather than simply read it,

  1182. friends,

  1183. we have to engage

  1184. in spiritual things together.

  1185. The exhortation

  1186. of Colossians 3,

  1187. 1 through 4

  1188. is given

  1189. not just to individuals

  1190. but to the church.

  1191. This isn't a solo act.

  1192. That's why we gather

  1193. every Sunday

1194. to hear God's word preached

1195. and to partake in baptism

  1196. in the Lord's Supper.

  1197. Together

1198. we hear God's word afresh.

  1199. Together

  1200. we take the bread

  1201. and the cup

  1202. and have our minds

  1203. and hearts recalibrated

  1204. to our living Lord,

  1205. to Christ

  1206. who is our life.

  1207. So do you take

  1208. a few minutes

  1209. on Saturday evening

  1210. before bed perhaps

  1211. and pray

  1212. that our gatherings

  1213. on Sunday

  1214. would be full

  1215. of God's spirit

  1216. and power?

  1217. Do you pray

  1218. that your heart

  1219. would be open

  1220. to receive his word

  1221. and grace afresh

1222. together with your church family?

1223. Do you pray the same

  1224. that the hearts

  1225. of your fellow members

  1226. would also be open

  1227. to God's word

  1228. and to God's grace?

  1229. I guess what I'm trying

  1230. to say here is,

  1231. friends,

  1232. make the most

  1233. of your Sundays.

  1234. Take a break

  1235. from your regularly

  1236. scheduled

  1237. busyness

  1238. if you can

  1239. and devote time

  1240. to your church family,

  1241. to thinking

  1242. and reading

  1243. and listening

  1244. to things

  1245. that will lift

  1246. your thoughts

  1247. and heart

  1248. to Christ ascended.

  1249. You know,

  1250. I actually see

1251. a lot of this happening

  1252. here at Trinity

  1253. in our church family

  1254. and it's so encouraging.

  1255. Invitations to lunch,

  1256. hearty conversations

  1257. over coffee downstairs,

  1258. exchanging books,

  1259. trading encouragements

  1260. after the service,

  1261. praying for one another.

  1262. Church family

  1263. abound in this

  1264. more and more.

  1265. Seek to season

  1266. your conversations

  1267. with the salt

  1268. of the gospel.

  1269. Come ready

  1270. with something

  1271. that God has spoken

1272. to you out of the sermon

  1273. or this week.

  1274. Come ready

  1275. to share a concern

  1276. of the week ahead.

  1277. Sundays are a gift

  1278. to enjoy.

  1279. Set them apart

  1280. for spiritual fellowship

  1281. and conversation,

1282. for reading good Christian books

  1283. when you get home,

  1284. friends,

  1285. for slowing down

  1286. and setting your mind

  1287. on things above.

1288. So then what we see here

  1289. in Colossians 3

  1290. is that the first

  1291. and principle

  1292. and undergirding duty

  1293. of all Christian growth

  1294. and change

1295. of living this new life

  1296. in Christ

1297. is to seek the things

  1298. that are above

  1299. where Christ is,

1300. seated at the right hand

  1301. of God.

  1302. So friends,

1303. let us set our minds

  1304. on Him.

  1305. Let us do it

  1306. deliberately

  1307. and daily,

  1308. intentionally,

  1309. and constantly

  1310. because at the end

  1311. of the day,

  1312. Christ is our life

  1313. and one day

  1314. He will return

  1315. and we will appear

  1316. with Him in glory.

  1317. Amen?

  1318. Let's pray.

  1319. Oh Lord,

  1320. we confess

  1321. that we need

  1322. so much help

  1323. in this matter.

  1324. God,

  1325. our minds

  1326. are easily distracted.

  1327. Our time

  1328. is so easily

  1329. gobbled up

  1330. by the concerns

  1331. of our callings

  1332. and our day.

  1333. Lord,

  1334. we confess

  1335. to You

  1336. that our hearts

  1337. have been so cold

  1338. in setting our minds

  1339. on things above

  1340. and yet,

  1341. Father,

  1342. this morning

  1343. we are grateful

  1344. that You are

  1345. a gracious God

  1346. and that You

  1347. continue to reveal

  1348. Yourself to us

  1349. and open Your arms

  1350. to us

  1351. and say,

  1352. come,

  1353. feast Your mind

  1354. and heart

  1355. on me.

  1356. So help us

  1357. to do that

  1358. when we gather

  1359. on Sundays,

  1360. when we go forth

  1361. this week,

  1362. when we open

  1363. the Word

  1364. in our own

  1365. private devotions

  1366. daily.

  1367. Oh God,

  1368. by Your Holy Spirit

  1369. would You come

  1370. and would You

  1371. help us

  1372. to set our minds

  1373. on things above.

  1374. Help us to remember

  1375. that Christ

  1376. is our life

  1377. and in so doing

  1378. would we live

  1379. this new life

  1380. that You've given us.

  1381. In Jesus' name,

  1382. Amen.

  1383. Amen.

  1384. Amen.

  1385. Amen.

  1386. Amen.

  1387. Amen.

  1388. Amen.

  1389. Amen.

  1390. Amen.

  1391. Amen.

  1392. Amen.

  1393. Amen.

  1394. Amen.

  1395. Amen.

  1396. Amen.

  1397. Amen.

  1398. Amen.

  1399. Amen.

  1400. Amen.

  1401. Amen.

  1402. Amen.

  1403. Amen.

  1404. Amen.

  1405. Amen.
