  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. Turn with me and your Bibles to the book of Colossians, Colossians page 984, 985 in the

  3. Pew Bibles.

  4. Colossians chapter 4, we're looking at verses 2 through 6 as we've been going through this

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  5. short but very powerful and wonderful letter of Paul this fall.

  6. And we are nearing the end.

  7. So we come to the end of Paul's instructions.

  8. Next week will be his closing and greetings.

  9. We'll see some of his friendships and the people, his co-workers in ministry.

  10. But today we're looking at the end of his instructions to the church.

  11. So let's read Colossians chapter 4, verses 2 through 6.

    Colossians 4:2–6

  12. Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.

  13. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare

  14. the mystery of Christ on account of which I am in prison, that I may make it clear which

  15. is how I ought to speak.

  16. Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.

  17. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought

  18. to answer each person.

  19. Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his letters and papers from prison wrote this.

  20. He said,

  21. The church is the church only when it exists for others.

  22. Not dominating, but helping and serving.

  23. It must tell people of every calling what it means to live in Christ, to exist for others.

  24. And as long as we're on earth, that's true.

  25. The church is the church only when it exists for others.

  26. Now, I think we would all admit the church has often struggled to live out this calling.

  27. Bonhoeffer was writing in a time and place where the church, when the church in Germany

  28. had become very powerful and very privileged, and as a result, it became self-serving.

  29. It became entangled with the power structures of the day and lost its distinctive witness.

  30. Now, in other times and places, the church has been marginalized and powerless and ridiculed,

  31. a small minority, and the church has been tempted to simply withdraw in fear from the world.

  32. Now, I think we're somewhere in the middle in the United States today.

  33. Christianity still has a privileged place in American history.

  34. But in certain sectors of society, Christianity is increasingly marginalized.

  35. So I think we can face both temptations.

  36. The temptation to compromise with the world, because we want to be accepted by it.

  37. And the temptation to withdraw from the world in fear, to make our faith just a private matter.

  38. Something that we do just on Sundays, and we don't tell anyone else about it the rest of the week.

  39. Last year, I was talking to another pastor in New Haven, and he said to me,

  40. the church is both a family and an army.

  41. And in order to be a healthy church, we need to hold both of those values together.

  42. As a church, we're called to be a family.

  43. We're called to be a refuge, a place of comfort and healing and community,

  44. of personal renewal and growth.

  45. But we're also called to be an army in the sense of a people on the mission to reach the world for Jesus.

  46. And to carry out the commission he's given us.

  47. So how do we live out this calling, this mission to the world to exist for others?

  48. And this morning's passage gives us some very practical instructions about how to do that.

  49. Now before we jump in, let me briefly review what we've seen in Colossians already.

  50. Or if you haven't been here, if you're here for the first time,

  51. this will sort of overview what we've looked at the last couple of months.

  52. The main idea of Colossians is chapter 2, verse 6.

    Isaiah 2:6

  53. As you receive Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.

  54. Now the first chapter of Colossians is about who is Christ Jesus the Lord,

  55. and what does it mean that we have received Him,

  56. and been brought into His kingdom, and belong to His family,

  57. and the gospel is growing in us.

  58. Chapter 2, starting at verse 8, we see Paul's warnings to the church in Colossae.

  59. He warned them, don't be taken captive by people who claim to offer you something better than Jesus.

  60. He says, there's nothing better than what Jesus has to offer you.

  61. You don't need to go somewhere else to find something that you can't get

  62. from knowing Jesus more deeply and fully.

  63. Chapter 3 is Paul's positive instructions.

  64. How do we live as people who have died and risen with Christ?

  65. And if you've noticed, Paul's instructions go from the inside out.

  66. So chapter 3, verses 1 to 4, he says,

  67. set your minds on things above.

  68. He starts with our own hearts and minds,

  69. and what we're seeking,

  70. and where we're directed, where we're focused.

  71. And then verses 5 to 17 of chapter 3,

  72. he focuses on the internal life of the Christian community.

  73. How we should be putting off sin,

  74. and putting on the character of Christ,

  75. and how we express that in our community together.

  76. Last week, we looked at verse 18 of chapter 3 to chapter 4, verse 1,

  77. which covers the household,

  78. which in the ancient world covered,

  79. was included both the home and work.

  80. And what does it mean to live in Christ in our home and work settings?

  81. And finally, the passage we're looking at today

  82. focuses on how do we relate to the outside world?

  83. How do we relate to people who are outside of the Christian community,

  84. who do not identify as believers in Christ?

  85. And the other thing Paul's doing here,

  86. as he sort of brings his letter to a close,

  87. is he's inviting the Colossian Christians to join in with him.

  88. In chapter 1, Paul began with praying with thanksgiving for the Colossians.

  89. And now here in chapter 4, verse 2, he says,

  90. join me in praying with thanksgiving,

  91. and praying for me.

  92. At the end of chapter 1,

  93. Paul spoke about his efforts in deed and word

  94. on behalf of the Colossians.

  95. And now in verses 5 and 6,

  96. he's going to urge them in their walk and talk,

  97. in our deed and word,

  98. to make efforts to share the gospel with their neighbors.

  99. So this section sort of wraps up the letter

  100. in a few different ways.

  101. So how do we, as the church of Jesus Christ,

  102. how do we exist for others?

  103. And Paul gives us two basic commands.

  104. Number one, be devoted in prayer.

  105. This is verse 2 to 4.

  106. And number two, be deliberate in witness.

  107. So that's what we're going to look at this morning.

  108. Prayer.

  109. You could also call this sermon,

  110. Pray, Walk, and Talk.

  111. Pray, verses 2 to 4.

  112. Walk, verse 5.

  113. Talk, verse 6.

  114. How do we relate to people outside the church?

  115. Those are Paul's three words for us today.

  116. So let's jump in.

  117. Verse 2, Paul tells us how to pray.

  118. He says three words.

  119. Be steadfast, be watchful, and be thankful.

  120. So first, be steadfast.

  121. What does that mean?

  122. It means to continue in prayer.

  123. It's a word that means pray with strength,

  124. pray with devotion, pray with endurance,

  125. with dedication and discipline.

  126. Jesus said like the persistent widow in the parable,

  127. we ought always to pray and not lose heart.

  128. We need to keep on praying even when we don't see answers

  129. to our prayers yet.

  130. Sam Storms has a book of meditations

  131. on the book of Colossians.

  132. And he gives a few reasons why God doesn't always

  133. answer our prayers immediately.

  134. Here are a few of them.

  135. He says sometimes we're too entitled.

  136. And through steadfast prayer, God wants to teach us

  137. that everything we receive is a gift.

  138. Sometimes he says we're too impatient.

  139. And through steadfast prayer, God wants to teach us

  140. patient dependence on him and not instant gratification.

  141. Sometimes we're too immature.

  142. We're not yet ready to handle the answers we're asking for.

  143. And through steadfast prayer, God prepares us

  144. to receive the answers that we're looking for to our prayers.

  145. Sometimes our motives are mixed.

  146. And through steadfast prayer, God starts to sort through our motives.

  147. Have you ever been praying for something?

  148. And then the Holy Spirit sort of starts to check your motives.

  149. And you sort of realize,

  150. my motives aren't quite right here.

  151. I really want this, but I need to sort those out before the Lord.

  152. Sometimes God wants to purify our hearts.

  153. Sometimes there's a spiritual battle going on that we're not even aware of,

  154. like it refers to in the book of Daniel.

  155. Sometimes God has his own sovereign reasons that we don't fully understand.

  156. But whatever the situation God's command to us is,

  157. be steadfast in prayer.

  158. But also, be watchful in prayer.

  159. Again, this goes back to the teaching of Jesus.

  160. Jesus taught his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  161. watch and pray that you may not fall into temptation.

  162. Luke 21 for 34, Jesus says,

  163. watch yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation,

  164. that is distraction and drunkenness and the cares of this life.

  165. And that day, the day when the Son of Man will return,

  166. come upon you suddenly like a trap.

  167. He says, watch yourselves.

  168. Watch and pray.

  169. Now, some Christians have misunderstood this command a little bit.

  170. Some Christians have gotten into the habit of watching for signs

  171. that supposedly indicate when Jesus will return.

  172. But that's not what Jesus said.

  173. Jesus didn't say, watch for signs and then make guesses about when I'll return.

  174. He said, no, you're not going to know.

  175. I'm going to comment unexpectedly.

  176. You won't be able to anticipate it.

  177. He says, watch yourselves.

  178. Sort of like a security guard working the night shift.

  179. You know the morning's going to come,

  180. but you're to be watchful in the face of potential spiritual dangers

  181. in this present evil age.

  182. We're to watch our lives and be in prayer, be watchful in prayer.

  183. Prayer helps us remain alive to the will of God

  184. and aware of the needs of the world,

  185. even as we await the glorious coming of our King.

  186. So be steadfast, be watchful,

  187. and third, be thankful in prayer.

  188. Paul says, pray with thanksgiving.

  189. You know, every once in a while,

  190. I've talked with Christians who are pretty persistent in prayer

  191. and perhaps watchful.

  192. Maybe they even are up in the middle of the night praying,

  193. but they're also anxious and restless.

  194. And you know, interestingly,

  195. prayer by itself doesn't always seem to make things better.

  196. Sometimes prayer even seems to make that anxiety worse.

  197. Because, you know, it's possible for our prayers

  198. to become a sort of meditation on our problems.

  199. But that's why Paul urges us to pray with thanksgiving.

  200. You see, giving thanks to God is one of the best ways

  201. to resist the dominance of anxiety and worry

  202. and restlessness and self-pity.

  203. Giving thanks to God reminds us of God's faithfulness in the past,

  204. and it points us towards God's promises in the future,

  205. and in doing so, it lifts us beyond our present circumstances.

  206. So Paul says, pray with steadfastness,

  207. pray with watchfulness,

  208. and also pray with thankfulness.

  209. So that's how we should pray.

  210. Now, before I go on to verse three and four,

  211. which gives us, which tells us what we should pray for,

  212. let me pause for a moment to speak to you.

  213. Perhaps you're not a Christian.

  214. Perhaps you're a skeptical or secular person.

  215. This week, we're celebrating Thanksgiving, right?

  216. We're talking about Thanksgiving here.

  217. And at one level, Thanksgiving's a great holiday

  218. because everyone can participate, right?

  219. People of all religious faith and none

  220. can agree that feeling and expressing gratitude

  221. is a good thing.

  222. It's one thing that almost all sociologists

  223. and psychologists agree.

  224. The practice of gratitude will make

  225. for a happier and healthier life.

  226. And so we can all take time to honor friends and family

  227. by thanking them this week.

  228. But I think practicing gratitude

  229. also raises a deeper question.

  230. If you're an atheist,

  231. if you're an agnostic,

  232. or if you believe in a higher power

  233. or a distant force

  234. rather than the personal and living God of the Bible,

  235. let me ask you a question.

  236. Where do you direct your feelings of gratitude

  237. aside from other human beings?

  238. Who do you thank

  239. when you feel overwhelmingly lucky to be alive?

  240. Gifted far beyond anything you've deserved.

  241. Rescued from a seemingly impossible predicament.

  242. Sustained and nourished in body and mind.

  243. Awaken to beauty and love

  244. and the mysteries of human life.

  245. Don't all those things make us

  246. intuitively want to thank someone?

  247. Not only have feelings of gratitude inside

  248. that have no object,

  249. or feeling grateful to the random variations

  250. of the universe.

  251. Don't our feelings of gratitude

  252. point us to someone

  253. whose wisdom astounds us

  254. and whose kindness beckons us.

  255. That's who the Bible speaks about.

  256. The Bible speaks about

  257. the infinitely wise God

  258. who made us for himself.

  259. And the Bible says

  260. that the kindness of God,

  261. the many gifts that all of us receive,

  262. whether we recognize them

  263. as coming from God or not,

  264. the kindness of God

  265. leads us toward repentance.

  266. That is towards turning to God.

  267. To look beyond ourselves

  268. and turn to the God who made us

  269. and the God who sent his son

  270. to reconcile us to himself

  271. so that we may know him

  272. as our heavenly father

  273. and as the source of every blessing.

  274. So let me challenge you

  275. as you celebrate Thanksgiving

  276. to consider

  277. who are you thankful to?

  278. And is the truly fitting object

  279. of your gratitude

  280. the God who is revealed

  281. in Jesus Christ?

  282. Christ.

  283. That's what the Bible

  284. has to offer.

  285. But moving on to verse 3 and 4,

  286. for those of us

  287. who are believers in Christ,

  288. Paul tells us

  289. not only how we should pray,

  290. but also what we should pray for.

  291. Now verses 3 and 4

  292. are not a comprehensive teaching

  293. on Christian prayer.

  294. There are many aspects of prayer

  295. that are not covered

  296. in these verses,

  297. but these verses tell us

  298. to pray for two things.

  299. Verse 3,

  300. Paul says,

  301. pray that God

  302. would open doors

  303. for his word.

  304. Now that phrase

  305. of God opening things

  306. that are previously closed

  307. is used in at least

  308. three ways

  309. in the New Testament.

  310. God opens the door

  311. to his kingdom.

  312. God opens the door

  313. to his family

  314. so that people

  315. from all nations

  316. can come in.

  317. So Acts 14.27 says,

  318. they declared

  319. how God had opened

  320. a door of faith

  321. to the Gentiles.

  322. to the nations

  323. of the world.

  324. But also God

  325. opens up opportunities

  326. for the gospel message

  327. to go out

  328. into all the world.

  329. Paul writes

  330. in 2 Corinthians 2.12,

  331. when I came to Troas

  332. to preach the gospel

  333. of Christ,

  334. a door was opened

  335. for me in the Lord.

  336. Or 1 Corinthians 16,

    1 Corinthians 16:8

  337. verse 8,

  338. I will stay in Ephesus

  339. for a wide door

  340. for effective work

  341. has opened to me.

  342. And there are

  343. many adversaries.

  344. So God opens up

  345. opportunities

  346. for the gospel

  347. to go out

  348. and also God

  349. opens the hearts

  350. of people

  351. to respond.

  352. Acts 16.14,

  353. the Lord opened

  354. Lydia's heart

  355. to pay attention

  356. to what was said

  357. by Paul.

  358. So God opens

  359. the door

  360. to his kingdom.

  361. He's done that

  362. in Christ Jesus.

  363. God opens up

  364. opportunities

  365. for the message

  366. to go out

  367. and God opens up

  368. people's hearts

  369. and minds

  370. so that Christ

  371. can come in.

  372. And in all these cases,

  373. God is the one

  374. who opens doors.

  375. Revelation 3.7

  376. describes Jesus

  377. as the one

  378. who has the key

  379. of David,

  380. who opens

  381. and no one

  382. will shut,

  383. who shuts

  384. and no one

  385. opens.

  386. And so when Paul

  387. prays here

  388. that God would

  389. open a door

  390. for his word,

  391. Paul is praying

  392. for God

  393. to do something

  394. that only God

  395. can do.

  396. And we too

  397. should pray

  398. earnestly

  399. for God

  400. to do

  401. what only God

  402. can do.

  403. To open hearts

  404. that are closed

  405. and resistant

  406. and hardened.

  407. To open doors

  408. for his word

  409. to go forth

  410. in places

  411. where there are

  412. barriers

  413. and hindrances

  414. and opposition.

  415. Now if you've been

  416. coming to our

  417. adult Sunday school

  418. class,

  419. you've heard stories

  420. about this

  421. just this morning

  422. and last week.

  423. Last Sunday,

  424. Kelechi was teaching

  425. and he told about

  426. his friend in Nigeria

  427. who had a dream

  428. two years ago.

  429. And this young man

  430. felt that in his dream

  431. God impressed

  432. upon his heart

  433. to go to a certain

  434. village in one of

  435. the most dangerous

  436. provinces in Nigeria.

  437. The headquarters

  438. of Boko Haram

  439. which is sort of

  440. a violent group

  441. felt that God

  442. was impressing

  443. upon him

  444. to go to this village

  445. and tell people

  446. there about Jesus.

  447. They had never

  448. been there before.

  449. They prayed

  450. about it together

  451. and four days later

  452. three people

  453. got in a car.

  454. Kelechi,

  455. his friend,

  456. another friend,

  457. they decided to go.

  458. And as they went

  459. they prayed

  460. because they realized

  461. that this was

  462. a very risky venture.

  463. They traveled

  464. eight hours by car

  465. to a place

  466. they'd never been before.

  467. They arrived

  468. at the village

  469. at night time.

  470. They met with

  471. the village chief

  472. who is a devout Muslim

  473. and they said,

  474. we're just visiting here

  475. and we weren't sure

  476. if people knew

  477. what Christmas was about.

  478. It was around

  479. Christmas time

  480. they were visiting.

  481. We'd like to share

  482. with you why

  483. Christians celebrate

  484. Christmas.

  485. And the chief said,

  486. sure.

  487. I'll get my boys

  488. to round everybody up

  489. and bring them

  490. to my palace

  491. and you can talk

  492. to them tomorrow.

  493. So the next day

  494. the chief summons

  495. everyone to his palace

  496. and they share

  497. for hours

  498. about why Jesus

  499. came into the world

  500. and the kind of life

  501. he lived

  502. and why he died

  503. on the cross.

  504. They had brought

  505. t-shirts with Bible verses

  506. in the local

  507. tribal language

  508. about Jesus

  509. as the prince of peace

  510. and about that province

  511. as a place

  512. of peace.

  513. They also talked

  514. to the chief

  515. about the possibility

  516. of opening a health clinic

  517. in the village

  518. at some point

  519. in the future.

  520. God opened a door

  521. for his word

  522. in a very unlikely place.

  523. And now we can pray

  524. that God would continue

  525. to open doors

  526. for his word

  527. in that village.

  528. That it would grow

  529. and bear fruit.

  530. So we should pray

  531. that God would open doors

  532. for his word.

  533. But the second thing

  534. Paul tells us

  535. to pray for

  536. is to pray

  537. that Christian missionaries

  538. and preachers

  539. would proclaim Christ

  540. with power

  541. and clarity.

  542. To declare

  543. the mystery of Christ

  544. on account

  545. of which I am in prison

  546. that I may make it clear

  547. which is how I ought

  548. to speak.

  549. So Paul says

  550. pray that God would do

  551. what only God can do

  552. that he would open the doors

  553. that no one else

  554. can open

  555. or shut

  556. once he opens them.

  557. But Paul also says

  558. pray that God

  559. would enable me

  560. to carry out

  561. the responsibility

  562. that God

  563. has given to me.

  564. Now on a side note

  565. if Paul asked people

  566. to pray for him

  567. we shouldn't be above

  568. asking people

  569. to pray for us.

  570. Occasionally

  571. I talk with Christians

  572. who almost

  573. seem to almost

  574. never ask anyone else

  575. to pray for them.

  576. You say

  577. can I pray for you?

  578. And they say

  579. no don't pray for me

  580. pray for somebody else.

  581. But you know what?

  582. Paul knew

  583. that God

  584. often chooses

  585. to work

  586. through the prayers

  587. of his people.

  588. And so we should

  589. ask others to pray

  590. that God

  591. would give us

  592. the strength

  593. to carry out

  594. the responsibilities

  595. he has set

  596. before us.

  597. All of us need that.

  598. Need others to pray

  599. that God would help us

  600. to be faithful

  601. in the mission

  602. he's given

  603. to each of us.

  604. That we'd have

  605. the courage

  606. and wisdom

  607. and power

  608. and love

  609. to fulfill

  610. all responsibilities

  611. before God.

  612. Now Paul's

  613. responsibility

  614. was to preach

  615. the gospel

  616. and to go

  617. to new places

  618. and begin churches.

  619. As he says

  620. in verse 3

  621. to declare

  622. the mystery

  623. of Christ.

  624. Now the mystery

  625. of Christ

  626. is simply

  627. the gospel

  628. of Christ.

  629. Romans 16

  630. 25

  631. Paul describes

  632. the gospel

  633. as the mystery

  634. that was kept

  635. secret for long

  636. ages

  637. but has now

  638. been disclosed

  639. to all nations.

  640. And in Colossians 2

    Colossians 2:2

  641. verse 2

  642. Paul says

  643. God's mystery

  644. is Christ

  645. in whom are hidden

  646. all the treasures

  647. of wisdom

  648. and knowledge.

  649. So when Paul talks

  650. about the mystery

  651. of Christ

  652. he's simply referring

  653. to it as something

  654. that had been hidden

  655. in the past

  656. in the Old Testament

  657. before Jesus came

  658. and now

  659. the curtain

  660. has been opened.

  661. In Jesus coming

  662. to earth

  663. in his life

  664. in his death

  665. in his resurrection

  666. in his ascension

  667. to glory

  668. the heavenly curtain

  669. has been drawn back

  670. and now the whole world

  671. can see God's plan.

  672. God's plan

  673. to reconcile

  674. sinful people

  675. to himself

  676. by his grace

  677. and God's plan

  678. to renew

  679. all of his creation

  680. for his glory.

  681. Now Paul's role

  682. and every Christian

  683. preacher's role

  684. is simply

  685. to make

  686. that gospel

  687. known

  688. to make it clear

  689. to preach it

  690. true

  691. truly

  692. as it is

  693. and not

  694. to mix it up

  695. with other things.

  696. One writer said

  697. the gospel

  698. is a summons

  699. to faith

  700. and obedience.

  701. It is an offer

  702. of reconciliation

  703. and peace

  704. with God.

  705. It is a warning

  706. of judgment

  707. to those who

  708. continue in sin

  709. and it is a gift

  710. of hope

  711. in a world

  712. that is brutal

  713. cold

  714. and dark.

  715. So we should pray

  716. that missionaries

  717. and preachers

  718. and evangelists

  719. throughout the world

  720. would make the gospel

  721. clear

  722. in all these ways

  723. as a summons

  724. as an offer

  725. as a warning

  726. and as a gift

  727. of hope.

  728. We should pray

  729. that through

  730. as the gospels

  731. preach

  732. that people

  733. would see Jesus

  734. in his glory

  735. and be drawn

  736. to him

  737. across all the barriers

  738. across cultural barriers

  739. across language barriers

  740. across intellectual barriers

  741. above the noise

  742. of all the distractions

  743. that clutter

  744. our modern world.

  745. We should pray

  746. particularly

  747. for believers

  748. who are suffering

  749. like Paul was.

  750. Paul mentions here

  751. he's in prison

  752. or at least

  753. literally that means bound.

  754. He was probably

  755. under house arrest

  756. on account of the gospel.

  757. Now at some times

  758. Paul did ask

  759. other Christians

  760. to pray for his release.

  761. Philippians 1.19

  762. Paul encourages

  763. the Philippian Christians

  764. to continue praying

  765. for his deliverance.

  766. But here

  767. in Colossians

  768. Paul's prayer

  769. is not

  770. that God

  771. would open the door

  772. so that I can go free

  773. ASAP.

  774. No,

  775. Paul's primary concern

  776. is that God

  777. would open a door

  778. for his word.

  779. And Paul knows

  780. that even if he's

  781. sitting there

  782. under house arrest

  783. chained to a guard

  784. that they're still

  785. letting him have visitors.

  786. And so the gospel

  787. and they're still

  788. letting him write letters.

  789. And so the gospel's

  790. going forward

  791. even through

  792. his imprisonment.

  793. That's actually

  794. the last word

  795. of the book of Acts.

  796. The last sentence

  797. of the book of Acts

  798. says Paul was

  799. under house arrest

  800. and it says

  801. he proclaimed

  802. the kingdom of God

  803. and taught about

  804. the Lord Jesus Christ

  805. boldly

  806. and unhindered.

  807. The word of

  808. even though Paul

  809. was confined

  810. the word of God

  811. was going forth

  812. and Paul

  813. could rejoice

  814. in that.

  815. And Paul was released

  816. from that imprisonment

  817. we think.

  818. The New Testament

  819. doesn't give us

  820. the chronology of that

  821. but as we put

  822. some things together

  823. it seems most likely

  824. that Paul was released

  825. from that particular

  826. imprisonment.

  827. He was able to go

  828. and travel

  829. and preach the gospel

  830. in other places

  831. again.

  832. But regardless

  833. we should pray

  834. for Christians

  835. who like Paul

  836. are persecuted.

  837. Who are

  838. pray for the persecuted

  839. church around the world

  840. that they would be relieved

  841. and comforted

  842. and released

  843. but also pray

  844. that they would be

  845. emboldened

  846. and empowered

  847. and encouraged

  848. like Paul.

  849. Now there's lots

  850. of opportunities

  851. that we have

  852. right here at Trinity

  853. to be reminded

  854. to pray for the church

  855. around the world.

  856. If you just go

  857. downstairs

  858. in the fellowship hall

  859. there's a bulletin

  860. board on the wall.

  861. It's just been

  862. nicely redone.

  863. It's called

  864. Trinity Around the World

  865. and you can see

  866. some of the ministries

  867. that we support

  868. and pray for

  869. throughout the world.

  870. In the month

  871. of December

  872. we'll be highlighting

  873. some of our global

  874. ministry partners

  875. in the bulletin

  876. each week

  877. so you can take

  878. your bulletin

  879. home with you

  880. and pray for them.

  881. We'll also be continuing

  882. our adult Sunday school.

  883. Next week we're not

  884. having Sunday school

  885. just the morning service

  886. at 10

  887. but again

  888. once December comes

  889. we have three more

  890. weeks of our

  891. global missions

  892. Sunday school class

  893. at 9 o'clock.

  894. You can join

  895. the prayer email list

  896. email Michelle

  897. call the office

  898. so you can receive

  899. email updates

  900. from the ministry

  901. partners we support

  902. as a church.

  903. There's all kinds

  904. of ways.

  905. We'll be having

  906. some people visit

  907. Joseph and Michelle

  908. coming we'll be

  909. visiting in a few

  910. weeks in December

  911. to share about

  912. their ministry.

  913. So let me just

  914. encourage you

  915. to take advantage

  916. of these opportunities

  917. to be reminded

  918. to pray

  919. for the church

  920. around the world

  921. and to remember

  922. that what God

  923. is doing is much

  924. bigger than what's

  925. going on in our

  926. individual lives

  927. or even in this

  928. local church

  929. but to pray

  930. as Paul encouraged

  931. the Colossians

  932. to pray

  933. for the work

  934. of God

  935. throughout the world.

  936. We've tried

  937. to start doing

  938. this with our

  939. kids

  940. with one or two

  941. of the families

  942. that they have

  943. met who have

  944. been part of

  945. this church

  946. who are now

  947. serving in other

  948. parts of the world

  949. and so we try

  950. to pray for

  951. those missionaries

  952. maybe once a week

  953. or at least

  954. every so often

  955. when we pray

  956. together at night

  957. to pray specifically

  958. for them

  959. and our kids

  960. pray for them.

  961. So let's find

  962. ways to be

  963. doing that

  964. and remembering

  965. that together.

  966. So that's

  967. Paul's first

  968. command

  969. be devoted

  970. in prayer

  971. for the church

  972. around the world

  973. but Paul's second

  974. command

  975. in verse 5

  976. and 6

  977. is not only

  978. be devoted

  979. in prayer

  980. for the church

  981. in other parts

  982. of the world

  983. but also be

  984. deliberate

  985. in witness

  986. to your neighbors

  987. next door.

  988. Verse 6

  989. this is the walk

  990. and talk

  991. part.

  992. You see

  993. the gospel

  994. the point is

  995. that the gospel

  996. of Jesus

  997. does not only

  998. go forth

  999. through missionaries

  1000. and preachers

  1001. and traveling evangelists

  1002. like Paul.

  1003. The gospel

  1004. goes forth

  1005. through the walk

  1006. and talk

  1007. of ordinary

  1008. followers of Jesus.

  1009. In verses 2

  1010. to 4

  1011. prayer supports

  1012. the church's mission

  1013. of proclaiming

  1014. the gospel abroad

  1015. and verses 5

  1016. and 6

  1017. wise living

  1018. supports the church's

  1019. mission of spreading

  1020. the gospel

  1021. at home.

  1022. So let's

  1023. look at verse 5

  1024. about our walk

  1025. and then we'll get

  1026. to verse 6

  1027. about our talk.

  1028. Verse 5

  1029. walk in wisdom

  1030. toward outsiders

  1031. making the best

  1032. use of the time.

  1033. Now when Paul

  1034. talks about our walk

  1035. he's talking about

  1036. our pattern of life

  1037. our attitude

  1038. our behavior

  1039. and notice

  1040. that when Paul

  1041. gives instructions here

  1042. about sharing

  1043. our faith

  1044. with people

  1045. outside the church

  1046. he begins

  1047. with our walk.

  1048. Bonhoeffer said

  1049. the church

  1050. must not

  1051. underestimate

  1052. the importance

  1053. of human example.

  1054. It is not

  1055. abstract argument

  1056. but example

  1057. that gives

  1058. its word

  1059. emphasis

  1060. and power.

  1061. I mean think

  1062. about it this way.

  1063. What was Jesus'

  1064. primary goal

  1065. in coming to earth?

  1066. Well most of us

  1067. would say something like

1068. to die on the cross

  1069. for our sins.

  1070. That's certainly

  1071. very central

  1072. to why Jesus came.

  1073. But if Jesus'

  1074. primary goal

  1075. in coming to earth

  1076. was to offer

  1077. his life

  1078. as a sacrifice

  1079. for us

  1080. why did he spend

  1081. 33 years

  1082. obeying his parents

  1083. working as a carpenter

  1084. teaching the crowds

  1085. healing the sick

  1086. casting out demons

  1087. instructing his disciples

  1088. praying to his father?

  1089. Well one reason is

  1090. because Jesus'

  1091. life and example

  1092. matters.

  1093. We see

  1094. from the way

  1095. Jesus lived

  1096. that he is

  1097. uniquely qualified

  1098. to be our savior.

  1099. We see

  1100. that he's

  1101. utterly wise

  1102. and fully trustworthy.

  1103. We see

  1104. that he's

  1105. a merciful

  1106. and faithful

  1107. high priest

  1108. who has been

  1109. tempted in every way

  1110. just as we are

  1111. yet without sin

  1112. so we can approach

  1113. him with confidence.

  1114. You see

  1115. Jesus'

  1116. walk matters

  1117. and our walk

  1118. matters too.

  1119. Someone said

  1120. we are the only

  1121. Bible

  1122. that some people

  1123. will ever read.

  1124. what does it

  1125. mean to walk

  1126. in wisdom?

  1127. Well John

  1128. Piper described

  1129. wisdom as

  1130. knowing what to

  1131. do for the

  1132. glory of God

  1133. when the rule

  1134. book runs out.

  1135. Knowing how to

  1136. become all things

  1137. to all people

  1138. without compromising

  1139. holiness and truth.

  1140. Creativity

  1141. and tact

  1142. and thoughtfulness.

  1143. It's a good

  1144. picture of

  1145. biblical wisdom.

  1146. It's not just

  1147. following the

  1148. rules

  1149. but it's

  1150. seeking to

  1151. live out the

  1152. mission that

  1153. God has given

  1154. us.

  1155. Seeking to

  1156. live out

  1157. the

  1158. live according

  1159. to the character

  1160. that God is

  1161. developing in

  1162. us.

  1163. And Piper

  1164. went on to

  1165. say there are

  1166. four sources

  1167. of wisdom.

  1168. Four ways we

  1169. can grow

  1170. in wisdom.

  1171. First,

  1172. meditating on

  1173. scripture.

  1174. Psalm 19

  1175. 7 says the

  1176. testimony of

  1177. the Lord is

  1178. sure,

  1179. making wise

  1180. the simple.

  1181. That word

  1182. simple means

  1183. those who

  1184. are naive.

  1185. And the

  1186. word of God

  1187. can help us

  1188. grow and

  1189. become wise.

  1190. Especially as

  1191. we meditate on

  1192. it.

  1193. Not just read

  1194. it quickly and

  1195. forget about

  1196. it but chew

  1197. on it.

  1198. Maybe that

  1199. means write

  1200. a verse

  1201. down and

  1202. repeat it and

  1203. read the same

  1204. verse for a

  1205. week so that

  1206. it gets into

  1207. us.

  1208. Prayer.

  1209. James 1 5,

  1210. if any of you

  1211. lacks wisdom,

  1212. let him ask

  1213. God.

  1214. Prayer is a

  1215. source of

  1216. wisdom.

  1217. Listening to

  1218. wise counselors,

  1219. Proverbs 19 20,

  1220. listen to advice

  1221. and accept

  1222. instruction and

  1223. at the end

  1224. you'll be

  1225. counted among

  1226. the wise.

  1227. Fourth,

  1228. constant

  1229. practice.

  1230. Hebrews 5 14

  1231. says that

  1232. mature Christians

  1233. have trained

  1234. themselves to

  1235. distinguish good

  1236. from evil by

  1237. constant use

  1238. of God's

  1239. word.

  1240. That is by

  1241. obeying biblical

  1242. commands and

  1243. applying biblical

  1244. principles day

  1245. by day just

  1246. like an athlete

  1247. trains for the

  1248. game by

  1249. constantly daily

  1250. practicing the

  1251. principles that

  1252. they've learned

  1253. from their

  1254. coach.

  1255. church.

  1256. So meditating

  1257. on scripture,

  1258. praying,

  1259. listening to

  1260. wise counselors

  1261. and seeking

  1262. out wise

  1263. counsel and

  1264. constant practice,

  1265. those are ways

  1266. that we can

  1267. grow in

  1268. wisdom.

  1269. And Paul

  1270. says walk

  1271. in wisdom.

  1272. All right,

  1273. the question

  1274. is does your

  1275. walk increasingly

  1276. reflect the

  1277. wisdom of God

  1278. in your

  1279. interactions with

  1280. people outside

  1281. the church?

  1282. can people who

  1283. are not

  1284. Christians look

  1285. at your life

  1286. and see not

  1287. perfection and

  1288. not someone

  1289. pretending that

  1290. they have it

  1291. all together

  1292. when they

  1293. don't?

  1294. Because none

  1295. of us will be

  1296. perfect and so

  1297. we shouldn't try

  1298. to pretend that

  1299. we are.

  1300. But can people

  1301. see sincerity

  1302. and can they

  1303. see growth over

  1304. time?

  1305. That's what Paul

  1306. is challenging

  1307. us to.

  1308. To walk and

  1309. to be growing

  1310. in wisdom.

  1311. He also says

  1312. making the best

  1313. use of the

  1314. time.

  1315. Think about

  1316. how do you

  1317. use your

  1318. time.

  1319. The best

  1320. use of our

  1321. time requires

  1322. intentionality.

  1323. Not just going

  1324. with the flow,

  1325. not just doing

  1326. whatever you feel

  1327. like doing in

  1328. the moment.

  1329. Now that doesn't

  1330. mean you have to

  1331. be type A and

  1332. have every hour

  1333. of your life

  1334. scheduled three

  1335. weeks in advance

  1336. and never be

  1337. spontaneous.

  1338. Right?

  1339. Type A people

  1340. have our own

  1341. problems.

  1342. We know that.

  1343. Even Jesus

  1344. accepted interruptions

  1345. from people.

  1346. It's a good

  1347. example for us

  1348. to follow.

  1349. But it does

  1350. mean that the

  1351. time we have

  1352. on earth is

  1353. short and we

  1354. ought to use it

  1355. well in light

  1356. of eternity.

  1357. You see,

  1358. the way we

  1359. use our time

  1360. is ultimately

  1361. a reflection of

  1362. our priorities.

  1363. priorities.

  1364. And the Bible

  1365. says that our

  1366. priorities ought

  1367. to be shaped

  1368. by eternal

  1369. realities.

  1370. You know,

  1371. Paul wrote this

  1372. letter to the

  1373. church in Colossae

  1374. and just a few

  1375. months or at

  1376. most a few

  1377. years after they

  1378. would have

  1379. received this

  1380. letter, the

  1381. entire city was

  1382. decimated by an

  1383. earthquake.

  1384. The time was

  1385. short and they

  1386. probably had no

  1387. idea how short

  1388. it was.

  1389. Here's a

  1390. question for us.

  1391. If your life

  1392. were unexpectedly

  1393. cut short

  1394. tomorrow, would

  1395. you have regrets

  1396. about how you

  1397. were using your

  1398. time today?

  1399. Are there

  1400. things that God

  1401. has commanded you

  1402. to do that you

  1403. are procrastinating

  1404. on or delaying?

  1405. Are there words

  1406. of comfort,

  1407. repentance,

  1408. forgiveness,

  1409. that you need

  1410. to speak to

  1411. someone else

  1412. and not keep

  1413. delaying?

  1414. Paul says,

  1415. make the best

  1416. use of the time

  1417. because the time

  1418. is short and we

  1419. will never know

  1420. how short it

  1421. might be.

  1422. But if verse

  1423. five focuses on

  1424. our walk,

  1425. verse six

  1426. focuses on

  1427. our talk.

  1428. Now, there's

  1429. a quotation

  1430. that is frequently

  1431. repeated and

  1432. it's almost

  1433. always attributed

  1434. to St. Francis

  1435. of Assisi that

  1436. says, preach

  1437. the gospel always

  1438. when necessary

  1439. use words.

  1440. There are at

  1441. least two

  1442. problems with

  1443. this quotation.

  1444. First, St.

  1445. Francis never

  1446. said it.

  1447. Okay?

  1448. Don't say

  1449. that somebody

  1450. said something

  1451. when they

  1452. didn't because

  1453. you wouldn't

  1454. want someone

  1455. saying that

  1456. about you

  1457. after you

  1458. die.

  1459. In fact,

  1460. St. Francis

  1461. preached a lot,

  1462. sometimes up

  1463. to five times

  1464. in a day,

  1465. so he didn't

  1466. even live

  1467. according to

  1468. this principle.

  1469. Second,

  1470. in order to

  1471. proclaim the

  1472. gospel of

  1473. Jesus,

  1474. words are

  1475. necessary

  1476. in some

  1477. form or

  1478. other,

  1479. whether it's

  1480. written down

  1481. or whether

  1482. it's spoken.

  1483. Now,

  1484. Paul,

  1485. a better

  1486. quotation is

  1487. this,

  1488. a godly

  1489. walk must

  1490. be accompanied

  1491. by godly

  1492. talk.

  1493. They have

  1494. to go

  1495. together.

  1496. That's why

  1497. Paul is

  1498. talking about

  1499. our walk

  1500. in verse

  1501. five,

  1502. and in

  1503. some ways

  1504. that's

  1505. foundational,

  1506. but talk

  1507. in verse

  1508. six needs

  1509. to go

  1510. along with

  1511. it.

  1512. Now,

  1513. Paul is

  1514. not saying

  1515. that all

  1516. of us

  1517. must stand

  1518. up in

  1519. front of

  1520. groups of

  1521. people and

  1522. give

  1523. speeches.

  1524. No,

  1525. but what

  1526. he does

  1527. say here

  1528. is that

  1529. our talk

  1530. matters.

  1531. Our

  1532. conversations

  1533. matter.

  1534. Let your

  1535. speech

  1536. always be

  1537. gracious,

  1538. seasoned

  1539. with salt,

  1540. so that

  1541. you may

  1542. know

  1543. how to

  1544. answer

  1545. each one.

  1546. Now,

  1547. Paul's

  1548. assumption

  1549. here is

  1550. that Christians

  1551. will regularly

  1552. be in

  1553. conversation

  1554. with people

  1555. who do

  1556. not identify

  1557. as believers

  1558. in Christ.

  1559. Right?

  1560. Earlier in

  1561. Colossians,

  1562. Paul warned

  1563. the Colossians.

  1564. He said,

  1565. don't be

  1566. led

  1567. astray

  1568. by deceptive

  1569. philosophies.

  1570. But here

  1571. we see

  1572. very clearly

  1573. that Paul's

  1574. warning not

  1575. to be led

  1576. astray

  1577. by false

  1578. teachers

  1579. does not

  1580. mean that

  1581. Christians

  1582. should

  1583. disengage

  1584. and withdraw

  1585. from all

  1586. of our

  1587. relationships

  1588. with people

  1589. who don't

  1590. identify

  1591. as Christians.

  1592. No.

  1593. We should

  1594. be engaged

  1595. in ongoing

  1596. relationship

  1597. and conversation.

  1598. That's a

  1599. basic assumption.

  1600. Paul doesn't

  1601. even need

  1602. to say it.

  1603. It's the

  1604. assumption

  1605. behind what

  1606. he's saying.

  1607. And in

  1608. fact,

  1609. Paul's

  1610. instructions

  1611. about how

  1612. we should

  1613. speak to

  1614. one another

  1615. inside the

  1616. church in

  1617. chapter 3

  1618. are quite

  1619. similar to

  1620. his instructions

  1621. here about

  1622. how to speak

  1623. with people

  1624. outside the

  1625. church.

  1626. So,

  1627. if you look

  1628. at chapter 3

  1629. verse 12,

  1630. Paul says,

  1631. put on

  1632. kindness,

  1633. humility,

  1634. meekness,

  1635. and patience.

  1636. And then here

  1637. in chapter 4

  1638. verse 6,

  1639. he says,

  1640. let your speech

  1641. always be

  1642. gracious.

  1643. Chapter 3

  1644. verse 16,

  1645. again,

  1646. within the

  1647. church,

  1648. we should be

  1649. teaching and

  1650. admonishing one

  1651. another.

  1652. And that

  1653. corresponds in

  1654. chapter 4

  1655. verse 6,

  1656. let your speech

  1657. be seasoned

  1658. with salt.

  1659. Right?

  1660. So,

  1661. there's a

  1662. parallel.

  1663. Right?

  1664. There shouldn't

  1665. be a huge

  1666. difference between

  1667. how we speak to

  1668. one another

  1669. inside the

  1670. church and how

  1671. we conversate

  1672. with people

  1673. outside the

  1674. church.

  1675. We shouldn't

  1676. only ever talk

  1677. about anything

  1678. spiritual with

  1679. only other

  1680. Christians and

  1681. never even

  1682. mention to

  1683. anyone else

  1684. that we

  1685. even go

  1686. to church.

  1687. No,

  1688. there should

  1689. be a

  1690. wholeness to

  1691. our life.

  1692. Right?

  1693. Christians are

  1694. not supposed to

  1695. be schizophrenic

  1696. and sort of

  1697. multiple personalities

  1698. in multiple

  1699. places.

  1700. No.

  1701. No.

  1702. Our life is

  1703. supposed to be

  1704. integrated and

  1705. whole and

  1706. truthful wherever

  1707. we are.

  1708. And we

  1709. shouldn't be

  1710. putting on a

  1711. show in front

  1712. of other

  1713. Christians when

  1714. we're not

  1715. living honestly

  1716. in the world.

  1717. Right?

  1718. There needs to

  1719. be a unity

  1720. here.

  1721. The only

  1722. difference I

  1723. can find is

  1724. Paul does

  1725. not say that

  1726. we should

  1727. sing psalms,

  1728. hymns, and

  1729. spiritual songs

  1730. to our

  1731. non-believing

  1732. neighbors.

  1733. Okay?

  1734. Probably in

  1735. most contexts

  1736. that would be

  1737. weird to go

  1738. up to your

  1739. non-Christian

  1740. neighbor and

  1741. start singing

  1742. one of the

  1743. songs that we

  1744. sang this

  1745. morning.

  1746. They'd

  1747. probably think

  1748. you're a

  1749. little odd.

  1750. And Paul's

  1751. saying, no,

  1752. you don't

  1753. need to be

  1754. odd.

  1755. You don't

  1756. need to be

  1757. deliberately

  1758. weird.

  1759. But here in

  1760. verse 6, what

  1761. we do see is

  1762. a picture of

  1763. how ordinary

  1764. non-weird

  1765. conversations can

  1766. unfold in a

  1767. way that leads

  1768. to opportunities

  1769. to share about

  1770. Christ.

  1771. Let your

  1772. speech always

  1773. be gracious.

  1774. What does

  1775. that word

  1776. mean?

  1777. It means

  1778. overflowing

  1779. with God's

  1780. grace.

  1781. Attractive,

  1782. gentle,

  1783. kind,

  1784. not harsh,

  1785. not overbearing.

  1786. Gracious

  1787. talk as

  1788. well as

  1789. gracious

  1790. listening,

  1791. because James

  1792. says we

  1793. should be

  1794. quick to

  1795. listen and

  1796. not just

  1797. to speak.

  1798. Gracious

  1799. talk as

  1800. well as

  1801. gracious

  1802. listening is

  1803. a testimony

  1804. to the

  1805. grace and

  1806. kindness that

  1807. we have

  1808. received from

  1809. God.

  1810. Someone said

  1811. people don't

  1812. care how much

  1813. you know until

  1814. they know that

  1815. you care.

  1816. So let your

  1817. speech always be

  1818. gracious.

  1819. But second,

  1820. our talk is

  1821. to be seasoned

  1822. with salt.

  1823. Now,

  1824. what does that

  1825. mean?

  1826. Well,

  1827. think about the

  1828. difference that

  1829. salt makes.

  1830. It adds flavor

  1831. to a meal.

  1832. It stimulates

  1833. appetite.

  1834. It makes you

  1835. want more.

  1836. In the ancient

  1837. world, salt was

  1838. also a preservative,

  1839. even today,

  1840. right?

  1841. If you have

  1842. sausages,

  1843. right?

  1844. They're probably

  1845. preserved with

  1846. salt and some

  1847. other things that

  1848. prevent the meat

  1849. from spoiling.

  1850. So Paul's

  1851. saying our

  1852. talk shouldn't

  1853. just be sweet

  1854. and inoffensive,

  1855. never challenging

  1856. the status quo,

  1857. never confronting

  1858. anyone, never

  1859. taking any risks.

  1860. No, our

  1861. talk also needs

  1862. to be salty.

  1863. It needs to be

  1864. sweet and gracious,

  1865. but it also needs

  1866. to be salty and

  1867. provocative.

  1868. You know,

  1869. invite someone to

  1870. come to the

  1871. Christmas carol

  1872. service with you.

  1873. Really?

  1874. What do you have

  1875. to lose?

  1876. They might even

  1877. say yes.

  1878. Look for

  1879. connections between

  1880. biblical truths

  1881. and ordinary

  1882. conversations.

  1883. And point them

  1884. out sometimes.

  1885. Learn to ask

  1886. thought-provoking

  1887. questions like

  1888. Jesus did.

  1889. Look at all the

  1890. questions.

  1891. Read through one

  1892. of the Gospels

  1893. and look at all

  1894. the questions

  1895. Jesus asks.

  1896. He asks people

  1897. a lot of

  1898. thought-provoking

  1899. questions.

  1900. And we can ask

  1901. questions like,

  1902. what are the

  1903. things you value

  1904. most in life?

  1905. Sincere questions

  1906. that help us

  1907. get to know

  1908. someone else

  1909. and get to

  1910. know what are

  1911. some of their

  1912. core concerns?

  1913. What's your

  1914. spiritual background?

  1915. Or maybe even

  1916. who do you think

  1917. Jesus was?

  1918. Or where are

  1919. you with God

  1920. in relationship

  1921. to God

  1922. if someone

  1923. is there?

  1924. Or even

  1925. this question.

  1926. If you were

  1927. to die tonight

  1928. and stand

  1929. before God

  1930. and God were

  1931. to say,

  1932. why should I

  1933. let you into

  1934. heaven?

  1935. How would

  1936. you respond?

  1937. God?

  1938. Now,

  1939. that's probably

  1940. not the most

  1941. helpful question

  1942. to ask an

  1943. atheist,

  1944. right?

  1945. Because they

  1946. would say,

  1947. well,

  1948. I don't believe

  1949. in God

  1950. at all.

  1951. But if someone

  1952. comes from a

  1953. nominally Christian

  1954. background,

  1955. that's actually a

  1956. really helpful

  1957. question to ask

  1958. because it's

  1959. really asking,

  1960. what are you

  1961. depending on

  1962. for your

  1963. salvation

  1964. and for being

  1965. right with

  1966. God?

  1967. those are

  1968. just some

  1969. examples.

  1970. But think

  1971. of your

  1972. own,

  1973. right?

  1974. What questions

  1975. can you ask

  1976. people that

  1977. will offer

  1978. an opportunity

  1979. for the

  1980. conversation to

  1981. go deeper?

  1982. But you know,

  1983. the only way

  1984. that our talk

  1985. will really

  1986. be both

  1987. gracious and

  1988. seasoned with

  1989. salt is if

  1990. we are resting

  1991. in the grace

  1992. of Jesus and

  1993. if we are

  1994. savoring Him.

  1995. If we've

  1996. tasted and

  1997. seen that He's

  1998. good and we

  1999. want more of

  2000. Him because

  2001. you know what?

  2002. You can't give

  2003. what you don't

  2004. have.

  2005. And so if

  2006. you're a

  2007. miserable

  2008. Christian,

  2009. you're not

  2010. going to be

  2011. able to share

  2012. it very well.

  2013. If you're

  2014. angry at God,

  2015. you need to

  2016. deal with being

  2017. angry and

  2018. bitter with

  2019. God before

  2020. you try to

  2021. go share the

  2022. gospel with

  2023. somebody else.

  2024. Although God

  2025. can sometimes

  2026. draw a

  2027. straight line

  2028. with a

  2029. crooked stick,

  2030. as they say.

  2031. But if

  2032. you're not

  2033. desiring more

  2034. of Jesus,

  2035. start there.

  2036. Because someone

  2037. who's hungry for

  2038. more of Jesus

  2039. and who's

  2040. finding satisfaction

  2041. in Jesus,

  2042. it'll overflow

  2043. naturally.

  2044. You might not

  2045. even need this

  2046. passage.

  2047. It'll just

  2048. start coming

  2049. out of you.

  2050. You might

  2051. sometimes need

  2052. some wisdom

  2053. and discernment,

  2054. but that's

  2055. another sermon

  2056. for another

  2057. day.

  2058. Finally,

  2059. verse 6 ends

  2060. with this,

  2061. so that you

  2062. may know how

  2063. you ought to

  2064. answer each

  2065. person.

  2066. I mean,

  2067. I think that

  2068. this verse

  2069. almost gives a

  2070. picture of

  2071. sort of a

  2072. relationship or

  2073. a conversation

  2074. that progresses,

  2075. right?

  2076. Someone sees

  2077. your walk,

  2078. you're growing

  2079. in wisdom,

  2080. your speech

  2081. is gracious,

  2082. you're building

  2083. a relationship,

  2084. your speech

  2085. is seasoned

  2086. with salt,

  2087. you ask

  2088. provocative

  2089. questions,

  2090. and then

  2091. eventually

  2092. someone asks

  2093. you a question

  2094. or they say,

  2095. you know,

  2096. I want to

  2097. know more

  2098. or,

  2099. sure,

  2100. I'll come

  2101. with you

  2102. to church.

  2103. I sort of

  2104. want to see

  2105. what it's

  2106. all about.

  2107. And then

  2108. you'll have

  2109. an opportunity

  2110. to answer.

  2111. And as 1 Peter

  2112. 3, 15 says,

  2113. you'll have an

  2114. opportunity to

  2115. give a reason

  2116. for the hope

  2117. that we have

  2118. in Christ

  2119. and to do

  2120. this with

  2121. gentleness

  2122. and respect.

  2123. You see,

  2124. in verses 5 and 6,

  2125. we see a picture

  2126. of how the gospel

  2127. of Jesus

  2128. goes forth,

  2129. not only by

  2130. preachers,

  2131. not only by

  2132. missionaries,

  2133. not only by

  2134. famous Christians

  2135. like Paul,

  2136. but they're

  2137. ordinary people

  2138. in one-to-one

  2139. conversations,

  2140. in,

  2141. through ordinary

  2142. Christian believers

  2143. who walk in wisdom

  2144. and whose talk

  2145. is gracious

  2146. and salty.

  2147. so brothers

  2148. and sisters,

  2149. pray,

  2150. walk,

  2151. talk,

  2152. because the church

  2153. is a church

  2154. only when it

  2155. exists for

  2156. others.

  2157. Let's pray.

  2158. Lord, we pray

  2159. that you would

  2160. help us to be

  2161. people of prayer,

  2162. people who pray

  2163. with steadfastness

  2164. and watchfulness

  2165. and thankfulness.

  2166. We pray for

  2167. open doors

  2168. for the gospel

  2169. people,

  2170. in other parts

  2171. of the world,

  2172. especially where

  2173. there are

  2174. hindrances.

  2175. churches,

  2176. but we pray

  2177. also that your

  2178. word would go

  2179. forth through

  2180. us.

  2181. Lord, we pray

  2182. that each of us

  2183. would be growing

  2184. in our walk

  2185. and in wisdom

  2186. as we meditate

  2187. on your word

  2188. and pray

  2189. and seek out

  2190. wise counsel

  2191. and seek to

  2192. constantly practice.

  2193. Lord, we pray

  2194. that our speech,

  2195. our talk,

  2196. would be gracious

  2197. and it would be

  2198. salty,

  2199. that our speech

  2200. would be truthful

  2201. and sincere.

  2202. And we pray

  2203. that many would

  2204. come to saving

  2205. faith in Jesus

  2206. Christ.

  2207. In his name we

  2208. pray.

  2209. Amen.
