  1. church. Turn with me and your Bibles to Isaiah. Isaiah chapter 7. In the Pew Bibles, it is page

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  2. 535. This morning is the first Sunday of Advent. That is the season where we anticipate celebrating

  3. the coming of Christ leading up to Christmas, and we're beginning a new sermon series on

  4. Messianic prophecies from the book of Isaiah. So this month in December, we'll be looking at how

  5. the prophecy of Isaiah points forward to the person of Christ. Isaiah lived and prophesied in

  6. the 8th century BC, about 700 years before the coming of Jesus into the world, and yet the New

  7. Testament quotes from the book of Isaiah over 75 times. And what we want to do this month is look

  8. at just five of those texts from Isaiah that are quoted or alluded to in the New Testament

  9. in reference to Jesus. So we'll consider how Isaiah's words shed light on the significance of

  10. Jesus' birth, Jesus' ministry, Jesus' character, Jesus' suffering, and Jesus' mission. The chapters

  11. we'll be focusing on are listed on the blue sermon cards in the pews, so if you want to take one of

  12. those home with you, feel free to do that if that helps you to prepare for Sundays. This morning,

  13. we're focusing on the prophecy that is in Isaiah chapter 7, verse 14, but I want to read chapter 7

    Isaiah 7:14

  14. beginning at verse 1 so that we can see some of the bigger context of the verse that we'll be looking

  15. at today. So join me, read with me from Isaiah chapter 7, beginning at verse 1.

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  16. In the days of Ahaz, the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin, the king of Syria,

  17. and Pekah, the son of Remaliah, the king of Israel, came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it,

  18. but could not yet mount an attack against it. When the house of David was told, Syria is in league

  19. with Ephraim, the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake

  20. before the wind. And the Lord said to Isaiah, go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shear Jashub, your son,

  21. at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the washer's field, and say to him,

  22. be careful, be quiet, do not fear. And do not let your heart be faint because of these two

  23. smoldering stumps of firebrands at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and the son of Remaliah.

  24. Because Syria with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah has devised evil against you saying,

  25. let us go up against Judah and terrify it and let us conquer it for ourselves and set up the son of

  26. Tabeal as king in the midst of it. Thus says the Lord God, it shall not stand and it shall not come

  27. to pass. For the head of Syria is Damascus and the head of Damascus is Rezin. And within 65 years,

  28. Ephraim will be shattered from being a people. And the head of Ephraim is Samaria and the head of

  29. Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all.

  30. Again, the Lord spoke to Ahaz, ask a sign of the Lord, your God, let it be deep as Sheol,

  31. as the grave or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask and I will not put the Lord to the test.

  32. And he, that is Isaiah said,

  33. hear then, O house of David, is it too little for you to weary men that you weary my God also?

  34. Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son

  35. and shall call his name Emmanuel. He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and

  36. choose the good. For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose

  37. two kings you dread will be deserted. And the Lord will bring upon you and upon your people and upon

  38. your father's house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah,

  39. the king of Assyria.

  40. What is it that strikes fear into your heart?

  41. Maybe it's something personal.

  42. Could be a medical diagnosis or a relational conflict or financial stresses or looming deadlines.

  43. Perhaps those final exams and papers that are due next week or the project that your boss wanted done yesterday.

  44. Maybe you're afraid because you have enemies.

  45. You have people who seem to be out to get you.

  46. And you don't feel like you have a way to defend yourself against them.

  47. Or maybe it's not just a personal crisis.

  48. Maybe it's a family crisis.

  49. Maybe you're worried about your kids.

  50. They're having problems and you can't seem to make any progress in dealing with them.

  51. Maybe you're worried about their school.

  52. The town of Hamden, where we now live, just approved a plan to redistrict their elementary schools

  53. and close two of them.

  54. It's a big change and affects a lot of people.

  55. The Board of Education meetings this fall have been filled with concerned parents.

  56. Or maybe it's something even bigger.

  57. Maybe you're worried about the direction of national politics.

  58. Or the effects of global warming.

  59. Or the worldwide refugee crisis.

  60. The passage we just read from Isaiah begins with the hearts of King Ahaz and his people

  61. shaking as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.

  62. King Ahaz was facing a national crisis.

  63. Two neighboring countries had banded together against him.

  64. They had invaded his land.

  65. They had caused some damage.

  66. They were headed toward Jerusalem.

  67. And Ahaz was shaking in his boots.

  68. Now the passage we read earlier in the service from the Gospel of Matthew

  69. also begins with someone facing a crisis.

  70. Joseph wasn't facing a national crisis, but he was facing a personal crisis because Joseph

  71. was betrothed.

  72. That is, he was legally pledged to be married.

  73. To marry.

  74. And he finds out she's pregnant with a child that's not his.

  75. What does he do now?

  76. Now, this morning as we look at both of these passages, I want us to see that God speaks

  77. to us in the midst of our fears.

  78. In the midst of our problems and crises, he speaks to us.

  79. And he speaks to us through a child called Emmanuel.

  80. I want us to look at this theme in three parts.

  81. First, I want to begin by looking at God's word to faithless Ahaz in the book of Isaiah.

  82. Then I want to look at God's word to faithful Joseph in the Gospel of Matthew.

  83. And third, I want us to consider God's word for us in our own problems and crises and fears today.

  84. So first, God's word for faithless Ahaz.

  85. As we said, Ahaz was facing a national crisis.

  86. It's described here in Isaiah chapter 7.

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  87. It's described with some more details in 1 Kings 16 and 2 Chronicles 28.

  88. So here's a bit more of the situation.

  89. Two neighboring countries.

  90. So one of them is called Syria.

  91. Not to be confused with Assyria.

  92. Those are two different countries.

  93. Both appear.

  94. So Syria, in some translations, if you have the NIV, it's called Aram.

  95. So Syria is one country.

  96. And then Israel, which is also called Ephraim, which was the northern ten tribes that had broke away from Judah.

  97. So Syria and Israel had allied themselves against Ahaz, who was down in Judah.

  98. And they had invaded his land.

  99. They had killed some of his people.

  100. They had taken many captives.

  101. And they were heading toward his capital city of Jerusalem.

  102. And Ahaz was shaking in his boots.

  103. Where we meet Ahaz in verse 3 is he's apparently gone out of the city to inspect the water supply.

  104. A practical thing to do.

  105. That's probably why he was at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the washer's field.

  106. It was one of the water sources for the city of Jerusalem.

  107. He's sort of thinking, if we're besieged, what do we have on hand?

  108. How are we going to deal with this?

  109. And there, verse 4, Isaiah delivered God's word to Ahaz.

  110. What's God's word?

  111. Be careful.

  112. Be quiet.

  113. Don't fear.

  114. Fear.

  115. And don't let your heart be faint because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands.

  116. In other words, what Isaiah is saying is that these two countries who are attacking you

  117. and who you're shaking in your boots about,

  118. they're like the remnants of a bonfire.

  119. They're still creating a bunch of smoke, but they're on their way down and they're on their way out.

  120. They are not the ones that you need to fear.

  121. So, verse 7 says,

  122. it, that is their plan to conquer Judah,

  123. shall not stand and it shall not come to pass.

  124. God says,

  125. they're trying to conquer you, they will not succeed.

  126. And then in verse 9, Isaiah challenges Ahaz and says,

  127. if you won't stand firm,

  128. if you are not firm in faith,

  129. you will not be firm at all.

  130. Now, that word has,

  131. that sentence,

  132. there's a word play in that verse

  133. that's hard to capture precisely in English

  134. because the same verb appears twice,

  135. first in an active form and then in a passive form.

  136. So, basically what Isaiah is saying is,

  137. if you won't actively trust and rely and believe in God,

  138. you won't be established,

  139. confirmed, reinforced by God.

  140. If you won't stand firm in faith,

  141. you won't be confirmed and established.

  142. Now, Ahaz doesn't seem to respond to Isaiah's first word,

  143. or at least his response is not recorded here in the text.

  144. So, Isaiah goes to,

  145. God sends another word to Ahaz.

  146. Verse 10,

  147. again,

  148. the Lord spoke to Ahaz a second time.

  149. Ask a sign of the Lord your God.

  150. Let it be as deep as the grave or as high as heaven.

  151. In other words,

  152. God was saying to Ahaz,

  153. let me show you how trustworthy I am.

  154. Let me demonstrate my love for you.

  155. I am your God.

  156. Let me show you my power to save.

  157. And Isaiah says,

  158. I mean, sorry,

  159. Ahaz says,

  160. verse 12,

  161. no.

  162. Now, he says this in a way that sounds rather polite

  163. and even sort of religious.

  164. I won't ask.

  165. I will not put the Lord to the test.

  166. All right, now, back in Deuteronomy,

  167. the Israelites were in the wilderness.

  168. And they were testing God,

  169. even though they had seen his faithfulness

  170. over and over and over again.

  171. And God says to them,

  172. do not put the Lord your God to the test.

  173. You've seen enough evidence.

  174. He brought you out of Egypt from slavery.

  175. He brought you through the Red Sea.

  176. You've seen enough.

  177. You don't need another sign.

  178. But here,

  179. God is offering Ahaz.

  180. It's a rather unusual offer.

  181. God doesn't make this offer to everyone in the scriptures.

  182. Ask me for a sign.

  183. Whatever you want.

  184. But Ahaz says no.

  185. Because really what Ahaz was saying

  186. was something like this.

  187. God,

  188. I don't even want to consider the possibility

  189. that you might be right.

  190. I don't even want to give you a chance

  191. to show me that you're worth trusting.

  192. I'm not asking you for a sign

  193. because I don't want a sign.

  194. Because my mind is already made up.

  195. I know who I trust,

  196. and it's not you.

  197. Now, you might say,

  198. well, how do we know that?

  199. How do we know that's what was going on

  200. in Ahaz's mind?

  201. Well, verse 13 indicates,

  202. here then, O house of David,

  203. is it too little for you to weary men

  204. that you weary my God also?

  205. In other words,

  206. Ahaz is test-trying the patience of God

  207. first by ignoring Isaiah's first word

  208. and then refusing the second word.

  209. But if you look at 2 Kings, verse 16,

  210. again, one of the other passages

  211. that speaks about the same situation,

  212. it makes it very clear

  213. who Ahaz was really trusting.

  214. So 2 Kings 16, verse 5,

    2 Kings 16:5

  215. just summarizes the situation.

  216. Rezin, king of Syria,

  217. and Pekah, the son of Ramaliah,

  218. king of Israel,

  219. came up to wage war in Jerusalem,

  220. and they besieged Ahaz.

  221. So they finally reached Jerusalem,

  222. but they couldn't conquer him.

  223. And then verse 7,

  224. here's Ahaz's response.

  225. So Ahaz sent messengers

  226. to Tiglas Pileser, king of Assyria,

  227. again, not Syria, but Assyria,

  228. saying,

  229. I am your servant and your son.

  230. Come up and rescue me

  231. from the hand of the king of Syria

  232. and from the hand of the king of Israel

  233. who are attacking me.

  234. Ahaz also took the silver and gold

  235. that was found in the house of the Lord

  236. and in the treasures of the king's house

  237. and sent a present to the king of Assyria.

  238. Who was Ahaz trusting to save him

  239. from this national crisis?

  240. He wasn't trusting the Lord,

  241. but he was trusting the king of Assyria.

  242. He was even willing to clean out

  243. the treasures of the Lord's house

  244. and send them off to the king of Assyria

  245. to try to buy his favor.

  246. Now you might say,

  247. who were the Assyrians?

  248. Well, they were the rapidly expanding

  249. superpower of the day.

  250. They were the largest empire

  251. that had yet existed in world history.

  252. They were also incredibly cruel

  253. and ruthless.

  254. They routinely deported

  255. and brutally tortured peoples

  256. whom they had conquered.

  257. But Ahaz thought

  258. the king of Assyria is strong.

  259. Ahaz's pro-Assyrian stance

  260. might have been partly

  261. what provoked Syria and Israel

  262. to unite and come against him

  263. in the first place

  264. because they realized

  265. that if he allied with Assyria,

  266. they were in trouble

  267. so they were going to strike first.

  268. So Ahaz might have just

  269. even brought this trouble on himself.

  270. By trusting in Assyria

  271. and looking to Assyria.

  272. So Ahaz was facing a national crisis

  273. and he refused to trust

  274. and obey the word of God.

  275. Instead, he trusted the king of Assyria.

  276. And that brings us to verse 14.

  277. God says to Ahaz,

  278. Okay.

  279. You won't ask me for a sign.

  280. I'll give you a sign.

  281. Behold,

  282. the virgin shall conceive

  283. and bear a son

  284. and shall call his name

  285. Emmanuel.

  286. This child Emmanuel

  287. will be a sign.

  288. In other words,

  289. this child Emmanuel

  290. will be a living demonstration

  291. that God's word

  292. is trustworthy and true

  293. even though you have rejected it.

  294. Ahaz.

  295. Now many people have wondered

  296. who in the world

  297. was Isaiah talking about?

  298. Here in verse 14.

  299. Now look down at verse 16.

  300. For before the boy knows

  301. how to refuse the evil

  302. and choose the good,

  303. the land whose two kings you dread

  304. will be deserted.

  305. Isaiah was speaking to Ahaz

  306. in the year 735 BC.

  307. That was the year

  308. that Syria and Israel

  309. invaded Judah.

  310. Three years later,

  311. the king of Assyria

  312. conquered Damascus.

  313. That was the capital of Syria.

  314. Killed the king of Syria

  315. and deposed the king of Israel.

  316. And ten years after that,

  317. the Assyrians conquered Samaria,

  318. the capital of Israel,

  319. and the nation of Israel

  320. fell apart.

  321. The northern kingdom.

  322. So at one level,

  323. verse 14

  324. has to be talking about

  325. a child who was born

  326. in the time of King Ahaz.

  327. Otherwise,

  328. the child is not assigned

  329. to King Ahaz

  330. and verse 16

  331. doesn't make any sense.

  332. So at one level,

  333. in the immediate context,

  334. there has to be

  335. a child that Isaiah

  336. is speaking about

  337. who was born back then

  338. in the 8th century BC.

  339. Now you might say,

  340. well,

  341. what about this word virgin?

  342. The virgin shall conceive

  343. and bear a son.

  344. Well,

  345. that word translated virgin

  346. can also mean more generally

  347. a young woman

  348. of marriageable age.

  349. So this is not necessarily

  350. speaking about

  351. a miraculous conception

  352. or a miraculous birth

  353. in Isaiah's time.

  354. So,

  355. okay,

  356. if there's a child

  357. that was born back then,

  358. who was it?

  359. Well,

  360. I think the beginning

  361. of chapter 8

  362. shows us

  363. who this child was.

  364. Chapter 8,

  365. verse 3.

  366. And I,

  367. this is Isaiah speaking,

  368. and I went to the prophetess,

  369. that is,

  370. Isaiah's wife,

  371. and she conceived

  372. and bore a son.

  373. Do you notice

  374. the parallel wording?

  375. 7,

  376. 14.

  377. The virgin shall conceive

  378. and bear a son.

  379. Chapter 8,

  380. verse 3.

  381. I went to the prophetess

  382. and she conceived

  383. and bore a son.

  384. Sign,

  385. fulfillment.

  386. And you might say,

  387. okay,

  388. so if Emmanuel

  389. is at least in part

  390. talking about Isaiah's son,

  391. then how is Isaiah's son

  392. assigned to King Ahaz

  393. and to his people?

  394. Well,

  395. primarily Isaiah's son

  396. would be a sign

  397. of God's coming judgment

  398. because Ahaz

  399. had refused

  400. to trust

  401. and obey

  402. the word of God.

  403. And God says,

  404. this child

  405. will show you

  406. and be a living demonstration

  407. that my words

  408. will come to pass

  409. regardless of whether

  410. you believe them or not.

  411. And because you have chosen

  412. not to believe them,

  413. you will experience

  414. judgment.

  415. Now,

  416. if you look at

  417. the verses following,

  418. 714 and 8.3,

  419. Isaiah first reaffirms

  420. that the two nations

  421. who are attacking Ahaz

  422. will be defeated.

  423. So,

  424. 716,

  425. the land whose two kings

  426. you dread

  427. will be deserted.

  428. 8.4,

  429. the wealth of Damascus

  430. and the spoil of Samaria

  431. will be carried away

  432. before the king of Assyria.

  433. But Isaiah's main emphasis

  434. is in the verses

  435. that follow.

  436. In 717-25

  437. and 8.5-8.

  438. What do these verses say?

  439. Verse 17,

  440. chapter 7,

  441. verse 17,

  442. the Lord will bring

  443. upon you

  444. and upon your people

  445. and upon your father's house

  446. such days

  447. as have not come

  448. since the day

  449. that Ephraim

  450. departed from Judah,

  451. the king of Assyria.

  452. So, basically,

  453. Isaiah's saying,

  454. you know what?

  455. These two nations

  456. that are attacking you now

  457. that you're worried about,

  458. yeah,

  459. they'll be dealt with,

  460. but guess what?

  461. Something worse

  462. is going to happen to you.

  463. Chapter 7,

  464. verse 18-25

  465. basically talks about

  466. how terrible things

  467. will be

  468. when the Assyrians

  469. invade Judah

  470. and how the land

  471. will be depopulated

  472. and how it will become

  473. briars and thorns.

  474. It'll become

  475. a wilderness again.

  476. Chapter 8,

  477. verse 5-8

  478. is even more clear.

  479. The Lord spoke to me again

  480. because this people,

  481. that is the people of Judah,

  482. has refused

  483. the waters of Shiloah

  484. that flow gently.

  485. So, Shiloah

  486. was a little stream

  487. outside Jerusalem

  488. that is just

  489. a small,

  490. gentle brook.

  491. And Isaiah's

  492. basically saying,

  493. because you're

  494. not willing

  495. to just be content

  496. being who you are

  497. and who God

  498. has made you to be

  499. and you rejoice

  500. over Rezin

  501. and the son of Ramaliah.

  502. That is,

  503. you're rejoicing

  504. that Assyria

  505. is conquering

  506. these Syria

  507. and Israel

  508. because you're

  509. so happy about that.

  510. Therefore,

  511. behold,

  512. the Lord is bringing up

  513. against them

  514. that is against you

  515. the waters of the river

  516. mighty and many,

  517. the king of Assyria

  518. and all his glory.

  519. It will rise

  520. over all its channels.

  521. It will go over

  522. all its banks.

  523. It will sweep

  524. on into Judah.

  525. In other words,

  526. the king of Assyria

  527. is going to come

  528. in like a flood

  529. and nearly drown you.

  530. You have something

  531. much bigger

  532. that you should be

  533. worried about.

  534. You're worried

  535. about the wrong thing.

  536. You're worried

  537. about these two

  538. little nations

  539. that God is going

  540. to deal with soon.

  541. And guess what?

  542. You have something

  543. even worse.

  544. If you want

  545. to think about this

  546. with a simple analogy,

  547. somebody else

  548. came up with this.

  549. Ahaz has been

  550. compared to a mouse

  551. who is being

  552. attacked by two rats

  553. and the mouse

  554. calls out for help

  555. to the neighborhood cat.

  556. You get it?

  557. Isaiah says,

  558. the cat is not

  559. your friend.

  560. He might attack

  561. the rats first,

  562. but once you're

  563. on his radar screen,

  564. he's coming for you.

  565. Isaiah says,

  566. Assyria is the

  567. wrong one to trust.

  568. And one commentator,

  569. John Oswalt,

  570. said,

  571. whatever we trust

  572. in place of God

  573. will eventually

  574. turn on us

  575. and destroy us.

  576. Isn't that so true?

  577. And that's part

  578. of God's judgment

  579. judgment when God

  580. gives us over

  581. to the fickle

  582. and selfish

  583. masters that we

  584. have chosen

  585. for ourselves.

  586. That's what the

  587. child Emmanuel

  588. would be a warning

  589. to Ahaz of.

  590. He would see

  591. this child growing up

  592. and he would see

  593. the word of God

  594. being fulfilled

  595. at each stage

  596. of this child's life

  597. and he would see

  598. that God's words

  599. were trustworthy

  600. and true

  601. and he would see

  602. that because he

  603. didn't listen

  604. and didn't obey

  605. that these judgments

  606. were coming

  607. on him.

  608. So Ahaz faced

  609. the national crisis.

  610. He refused to trust

  611. and obey the word

  612. of God

  613. so God gave him

  614. the sign of the child

  615. Emmanuel

  616. as a sign

  617. of his coming judgment.

  618. But now,

  619. that's Act 1.

  620. Now we go to Act 2,

  621. the Gospel of Matthew,

  622. God's word

  623. to faithful Joseph.

  624. Turn ahead

  625. to Matthew 1.

  626. We read this earlier

  627. in the service.

  628. The page number's

  629. in your bulletin

  630. if you need that.

  631. Matthew 1,

  632. 18 to 25.

  633. Now here we have

  634. somebody who's not

  635. facing a national crisis

  636. but he's facing

  637. a personal crisis.

  638. Back then,

  639. being betrothed

  640. was,

  641. it was even more

  642. binding than engagement.

  643. Okay,

  644. being betrothed

  645. meant you're legally

  646. pledged to be married.

  647. The only way

  648. you could break off

  649. a betrothal agreement

  650. was through

  651. a legal divorce.

  652. So it was even

  653. more serious

  654. and even more difficult

  655. than breaking off

  656. an engagement today

  657. as devastating

  658. as that can be.

  659. So Joseph has already

  660. signed on the dotted line.

  661. They have a wedding,

  662. they've, you know,

  663. they've probably

  664. got a wedding date

  665. but they've made

  666. a legal and binding agreement.

  667. They will be married,

  668. they're not yet married,

  669. they're not yet living together

  670. but they haven't yet

  671. slept together

  672. but then he learns

  673. Mary's pregnant.

  674. And so what does he do?

  675. Verse 19,

  676. it says Joseph resolved

  677. to divorce her quietly.

  678. Now notice,

  679. verse 19 says

  680. Joseph was a just man,

  681. that is a righteous man

  682. and he was also

  683. a compassionate man

  684. because it says

  685. he was unwilling

  686. to put her to shame.

  687. In other words,

  688. Joseph was saying,

  689. I'm committed

  690. not to dishonor you

  691. even though

  692. I can no longer

  693. trust you.

  694. I can't marry you

  695. but I won't do anything

  696. to harm you.

  697. I won't make a big scene.

  698. I won't gossip about this.

  699. I won't seek to undermine

  700. your reputation.

  701. We will go our separate ways

  702. peaceably.

  703. Now on a side note,

  704. Joseph in verse 19

  705. is an example

  706. of how to go through

  707. a divorce

  708. in a godly

  709. and righteous way

  710. when you have clear

  711. biblical grounds

  712. for divorce,

  713. in this case

  714. apparent sexual

  715. unfaithfulness.

  716. Joseph resolved

  717. not to be vindictive

  718. even when it seemed

  719. that trust

  720. had been irreparably

  721. broken.

  722. However,

  723. that's a side note,

  724. what seemed

  725. to be the case

  726. was not actually

  727. the case.

  728. God sent his word

  729. to Joseph,

  730. verse 20,

  731. not through a prophet

  732. as with Isaiah

  733. but through an angel

  734. in a dream.

  735. Joseph,

  736. son of David,

  737. do not fear.

  738. Again,

  739. notice the theme

  740. of fear.

  741. Do not fear

  742. to take Mary

  743. as your wife

  744. for that which is

  745. conceived in her

  746. is from the Holy Spirit.

  747. Okay,

  748. that's the one

  749. and only time

  750. that this is going

  751. to happen,

  752. just so you know.

  753. She will bear a son

  754. and you shall call

  755. his name Jesus

  756. for he will save

  757. his people

  758. from their sins.

  759. And unlike

  760. King Ahaz

  761. who twice

  762. rejected God's word,

  763. we see that

  764. Joseph obeyed

  765. immediately.

  766. Verse 24,

  767. when Joseph woke

  768. from sleep,

  769. he did as the angel

  770. of the Lord

  771. commanded him.

  772. He took his wife

  773. but knew her not

  774. till she had given

  775. birth to a son

  776. and he called

  777. his name Jesus.

  778. So Joseph was facing

  779. a personal crisis.

  780. God sent his word

  781. to him

  782. and Joseph trusted

  783. and obeyed.

  784. And what we also see

  785. is that God

  786. gave him a sign.

  787. the child

  788. Emmanuel

  789. as a sign

  790. not of his

  791. coming judgment

  792. but of his

  793. coming salvation.

  794. Jesus

  795. who will save

  796. his people

  797. from their sins.

  798. Verse 22

  799. and 23,

  800. Matthew tells us

  801. that all this

  802. took place

  803. to fulfill

  804. what the Lord

  805. had spoken

  806. through the prophet

  807. Isaiah.

  808. Now,

  809. I'm sure

  810. that some of you

  811. are asking this question.

  812. You're saying,

  813. wait a minute,

  814. you just told me

  815. that Isaiah

  816. was talking about

  817. his own son

  818. Emmanuel

  819. back in the 8th century

  820. BC.

  821. How can then

  822. Matthew

  823. say

  824. that Isaiah's

  825. prophecy

  826. is fulfilled

  827. in the birth

  828. of Jesus?

  829. Let me say

  830. three things

  831. out to that

  832. very reasonable

  833. question.

  834. First,

  835. many biblical

  836. prophecies

  837. have both

  838. an immediate

  839. fulfillment

  840. that is

  841. a specific

  842. relevance

  843. to the time

  844. and place

  845. where they

  846. were first

  847. spoken

  848. and a

  849. longer

  850. range

  851. fulfillment

  852. that becomes

  853. evident

  854. later on

  855. in the

  856. unfolding

  857. story

  858. of God's

  859. salvation.

  860. So,

  861. it's a bit

  862. like if you're

  863. watching,

  864. it's not a

  865. perfect analogy,

  866. but if you're

  867. watching a movie

  868. and the movie

  869. begins

  870. with a close-up

  871. of a particular

  872. individual

  873. individual.

  874. And for a

  875. while,

  876. the movie

  877. is just

  878. focused on

  879. you see

  880. that person

  881. as a

  882. child,

  883. you see

  884. them growing

  885. up,

  886. you see

  887. their life

  888. develop,

  889. and you

  890. think

  891. this movie

  892. is all

  893. about that

  894. one person.

  895. For example,

  896. take Thomas

  897. Edison.

  898. I'm not sure

  899. there's a movie

  900. about him,

  901. but he's the

  902. one who invented

  903. electricity

  904. and all other

  905. kinds of

  906. things.

  907. So,

  908. the movie

  909. focuses on

  910. his childhood

  911. and then

  912. finally on

  913. his adventures,

  914. but then as

  915. the movie

  916. comes to

  917. an end,

  918. the story

  919. broadens.

  920. Because it's

  921. not just

  922. about Thomas

  923. Edison,

  924. it's about

  925. how electricity

  926. changed the

  927. world.

  928. It's about

  929. his followers

  930. and their

  931. legacy and

  932. his legacy

  933. and his

  934. impact,

  935. and it's

  936. about the

  937. people who

  938. come after

  939. him who

  940. even far

  941. surpassed

  942. them.

  943. The people

  944. who make

  945. even other

  946. inventions that

  947. even perhaps

  948. have a greater

  949. impact that

  950. grow out of

  951. that.

  952. You realize

  953. that this one

  954. person is only

  955. the beginning

  956. of a much

  957. bigger story.

  958. Second,

  959. so that's a

  960. general point

  961. about biblical

  962. prophecy.

  963. They often

  964. have both

  965. an immediate

  966. fulfillment

  967. and a longer

  968. range fulfillment.

  969. In the case

  970. of this

  971. particular

  972. prophecy,

  973. second point,

  974. the book

  975. of Isaiah

  976. itself points

  977. to both

  978. an immediate

  979. fulfillment

  980. and a longer

  981. range fulfillment.

  982. You might say,

  983. how?

  984. Well,

  985. turn back to

  986. Isaiah,

  987. but keep

  988. your finger

  989. in Matthew.

  990. Turn back

  991. to Isaiah.

  992. Isaiah,

  993. the child

  994. Emmanuel is

  995. first named

  996. in Isaiah

  997. 7,

  998. 14.

  999. And as I've

  1000. pointed out,

  1001. the rest of

  1002. chapter 7

  1003. and the beginning

  1004. of chapter 8

  1005. clearly indicate

  1006. that Isaiah's

  1007. son was in

  1008. mind.

  1009. I think that's

  1010. the best way

  1011. to understand

  1012. them.

  1013. But that's

  1014. not all that

  1015. Isaiah says

  1016. about Emmanuel.

  1017. Look at

  1018. chapter 8,

  1019. verse 8.

  1020. It's talking

  1021. about the king

  1022. of Assyria

  1023. invading Judah

  1024. and sweeping

  1025. on into Judah,

  1026. overflowing

  1027. and passing

  1028. on,

  1029. reaching even

  1030. to the neck.

  1031. It's as if

  1032. Judah is

  1033. nearly drowning

  1034. in this flood

  1035. and its

  1036. outspread wings

  1037. that is the

  1038. extent

  1039. of the king

  1040. of Assyria,

  1041. his power

  1042. will fill

  1043. the breadth

  1044. of your land,

  1045. O Emmanuel.

  1046. And you think,

  1047. what?

  1048. your land,

  1049. O Emmanuel.

  1050. Wait a minute.

  1051. I thought

  1052. Emmanuel's just

  1053. Isaiah's son.

  1054. Isaiah's son

  1055. doesn't even

  1056. become a king.

  1057. How does the

  1058. whole land

  1059. belong to

  1060. Emmanuel?

  1061. And then,

  1062. verses 9 and 10,

  1063. the tone

  1064. abruptly shifts

  1065. from a prophecy

  1066. of judgment

  1067. that almost

  1068. overwhelms

  1069. and destroys

  1070. Judah

  1071. to

  1072. an announcement

  1073. of judgment

  1074. on the other

  1075. nations that

  1076. are attacking

  1077. Judah.

  1078. And a word

  1079. of hope

  1080. for God's

  1081. people.

  1082. Verse 10,

  1083. take counsel

  1084. together,

  1085. but it will

  1086. come to

  1087. nothing.

  1088. Speak a word,

  1089. but it will

  1090. not stand,

  1091. for God

  1092. is with us.

  1093. Emmanuel.

  1094. There's that

  1095. word again.

  1096. It's a word

  1097. play.

  1098. The word

  1099. Emmanuel

  1100. means God

  1101. with us.

  1102. For God

  1103. is with us.

  1104. So,

  1105. Emmanuel seems

  1106. to give

  1107. renewed

  1108. strength

  1109. and hope

  1110. to God's

  1111. people,

  1112. even after

  1113. God has

  1114. judged them

  1115. for their

  1116. faithlessness.

  1117. And then,

  1118. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  1119. 9,

  1120. which we'll

  1121. look at

  1122. more next

  1123. week,

  1124. also talks

  1125. about this

  1126. child who

  1127. will be

  1128. born.

  1129. Chapter 9,

  1130. verse 6,

  1131. for to us a

  1132. child is

  1133. born.

  1134. To us a

  1135. son is

  1136. given,

  1137. and the

  1138. government

  1139. shall be

  1140. upon his

  1141. shoulder.

  1142. And the

  1143. end of

  1144. verse 7

  1145. says,

  1146. he will

  1147. reign with

  1148. justice and

  1149. righteousness

  1150. from this

  1151. time forth

  1152. and forever

  1153. more.

  1154. You see,

  1155. the horizon

  1156. has broadened.

  1157. We've started

  1158. by just

  1159. looking at

  1160. Emmanuel as

  1161. Isaiah's son,

  1162. and then the

  1163. camera angle

  1164. has zoomed

  1165. out,

  1166. and now

  1167. we see

  1168. that someone

  1169. called Emmanuel

  1170. will reign

  1171. forever.

  1172. So it

  1173. can't just

  1174. be talking

  1175. about Isaiah's

  1176. son,

  1177. even though

  1178. it is

  1179. talking about

  1180. Isaiah's

  1181. son at

  1182. the first.

  1183. Third

  1184. point,

  1185. Matthew

  1186. sees this

  1187. familiar

  1188. pattern first

  1189. described by

  1190. Isaiah,

  1191. and he

  1192. sees that it

  1193. has now come

  1194. to a greater

  1195. fulfillment

  1196. in the

  1197. birth of

  1198. Jesus.

  1199. He sees

  1200. that Jesus

  1201. is this

  1202. child who

  1203. will one

  1204. day reign

  1205. forever.

  1206. You know,

  1207. if you look

  1208. at Old

  1209. Testament

  1210. prophecies,

  1211. there are a

  1212. few Old

  1213. Testament

  1214. prophecies

  1215. that are

  1216. about the

  1217. Messiah that

  1218. are fairly

  1219. straightforward

  1220. predictions.

  1221. Prophecies

  1222. that were

  1223. recognized even

  1224. before the

  1225. coming of

  1226. Christ,

  1227. by faithful

  1228. Jews,

  1229. they were

  1230. expecting

  1231. these words

  1232. to refer

  1233. to the

  1234. Messiah.

  1235. A good

  1236. example of

  1237. one of

  1238. these is

  1239. Micah 5.2,

  1240. which basically

  1241. says that a

  1242. ruler of

  1243. Israel will

  1244. come from

  1245. Bethlehem.

  1246. And you can

  1247. look at the

  1248. Dead Sea Scrolls,

  1249. you can look at

  1250. pre-Christian

  1251. Jewish documents

  1252. that clearly

  1253. interpret that

  1254. verse as

  1255. referring to a

  1256. coming Messiah.

  1257. Messiah.

  1258. But you know,

  1259. many or

  1260. perhaps even

  1261. most Old

  1262. Testament

  1263. prophecies,

  1264. it's not

  1265. quite that

  1266. clear in

  1267. advance what

  1268. they're referring

  1269. to.

  1270. Their

  1271. significance

  1272. only becomes

  1273. clearer in

  1274. hindsight after

  1275. Christ has

  1276. come.

  1277. One scholar,

  1278. Craig Blomberg,

  1279. put it this

  1280. way.

  1281. He said,

  1282. the key

  1283. patterns of

  1284. activity

  1285. ascribed to

  1286. God

  1287. recur,

  1288. that is,

  1289. they happen

  1290. over and

  1291. over,

  1292. in striking

  1293. discernible

  1294. patterns such

  1295. that the

  1296. believer can

  1297. only affirm

  1298. the same

  1299. hand of

  1300. God at

  1301. work in

  1302. both events.

  1303. It's sort

  1304. of like if

  1305. you turn on

  1306. the radio

  1307. and you

  1308. hear a

  1309. song that

  1310. you have

  1311. never heard

  1312. before,

  1313. but immediately

  1314. you recognize

  1315. the singer's

  1316. voice.

  1317. You recognize

  1318. the band's

  1319. style and

  1320. you know

  1321. immediately

  1322. who it

  1323. is even

  1324. though you've

  1325. never heard

  1326. that song

  1327. in your

  1328. life.

  1329. Or you

  1330. see a

  1331. piece of

  1332. art that

  1333. you've never

  1334. seen before

  1335. and immediately

  1336. you know

  1337. that's a

  1338. Van Gogh,

  1339. that's a

  1340. Monet,

  1341. because you

  1342. see the

  1343. fingerprints of

  1344. the artist.

  1345. I think

  1346. Matthew looks

  1347. at the story

  1348. of the birth

  1349. of Christ

  1350. and he

  1351. says,

  1352. that's the

  1353. God who

  1354. speaks to

  1355. us in

  1356. our

  1357. fears.

  1358. That's the

  1359. God whose

  1360. word is

  1361. always

  1362. trustworthy.

  1363. That's the

  1364. God who

  1365. gives his

  1366. people a

  1367. sign,

  1368. the sign

  1369. of Emmanuel,

  1370. so they

  1371. can see

  1372. that he

  1373. will always

  1374. be true

  1375. to his

  1376. word.

  1377. And so

  1378. they can be

  1379. encouraged and

  1380. challenged to

  1381. trust him

  1382. and not

  1383. trust anything

  1384. else that is

  1385. not worthy

  1386. of their

  1387. trust.

  1388. You see,

  1389. here's the

  1390. basic comparison.

  1391. Back in the

  1392. day,

  1393. Isaiah's son

  1394. Emmanuel was

  1395. assigned to

  1396. unfaithful Ahaz

  1397. of God's

  1398. coming judgment,

  1399. but now

  1400. Matthew is

  1401. saying,

  1402. Emmanuel,

  1403. born of the

  1404. Virgin Mary,

  1405. is assigned to

  1406. faithful Joseph

  1407. and to all

  1408. God's people of

  1409. his God's

  1410. coming salvation.

  1411. As Joseph

  1412. watched the

  1413. child Jesus

  1414. grow up,

  1415. as he watched

  1416. him be born,

  1417. as he watched

  1418. him grow up,

  1419. he would see

  1420. God's promises

  1421. are coming

  1422. to pass

  1423. in him.

  1424. He is a

  1425. sign that God

  1426. is faithful to

  1427. his word,

  1428. and he is a

  1429. sign that God

  1430. has come

  1431. to save us.

  1432. That's what

  1433. the name Jesus

  1434. means.

  1435. The Lord

  1436. saves.

  1437. There's

  1438. salvation

  1439. for everyone

  1440. who will put

  1441. their trust

  1442. in Jesus.

  1443. Emmanuel,

  1444. God with

  1445. us.

  1446. So we've

  1447. seen God's

  1448. word to

  1449. unfaithful

  1450. Ahaz,

  1451. and we've

  1452. seen God's

  1453. word to

  1454. faithful

  1455. Joseph,

  1456. and finally,

  1457. I want us

  1458. to consider

  1459. God's word

  1460. to us.

  1461. What are the

  1462. crises and

  1463. problems that

  1464. you're facing?

  1465. What are the

  1466. things that can

  1467. make your heart

  1468. shake like a

  1469. tree in the

  1470. wind?

  1471. Whether they're

  1472. personal problems

  1473. or family

  1474. crises or national

  1475. or global

  1476. concerns?

  1477. Let me speak

  1478. to you for a

  1479. moment if

  1480. you're not

  1481. a Christian,

  1482. if you're not

  1483. currently trusting

  1484. Jesus as your

  1485. Lord and Savior.

  1486. God spoke to

  1487. Ahaz, and God

  1488. said, ask me

  1489. for a sign.

  1490. Now, as I

  1491. said, God

  1492. does not tell

  1493. everyone to

  1494. ask him for

  1495. signs anytime

  1496. they want.

  1497. God does not

  1498. say, ask me

  1499. for whatever

  1500. you want, and

  1501. if I don't

  1502. give it to

  1503. you, then

  1504. don't worry,

  1505. you don't

  1506. have to

  1507. trust me.

  1508. The Pharisees

  1509. came to

  1510. Jesus, they

  1511. demanded a

  1512. sign, and

  1513. Jesus said

  1514. no, because

  1515. their motives

  1516. weren't right.

  1517. But here's

  1518. the question.

  1519. Are you

  1520. giving God

  1521. a chance to

  1522. show himself

  1523. to you as

  1524. trustworthy and

  1525. true?

  1526. Maybe you have

  1527. questions, maybe

  1528. you have doubts

  1529. thoughts or fears

  1530. or issues, barriers

  1531. to faith in the

  1532. Christian God.

  1533. Talk about them

  1534. with a Christian.

  1535. You'll almost

  1536. certainly find that

  1537. other people have

  1538. wrestled with the

  1539. very same things.

  1540. There are good

  1541. books by Christians

  1542. that address all

  1543. kinds of issues and

  1544. fears and doubts

  1545. and concerns and

  1546. questions.

  1547. Have you read a

  1548. thoughtful book by

  1549. a Christian that

  1550. explains a

  1551. Christian perspective

  1552. on whatever your

  1553. top doubt or

  1554. issue is with

  1555. Christianity?

  1556. Also, let me

  1557. challenge you, are

  1558. you willing to

  1559. question your

  1560. default assumptions?

  1561. Ahaz's default

  1562. assumption was,

  1563. I need to trust

  1564. the biggest guy

  1565. on the block.

  1566. Everybody trusts

  1567. something, even

  1568. if it's only

  1569. themselves.

  1570. Who are you

  1571. trusting if it's

  1572. not God?

  1573. Finally, have you

  1574. ever prayed and

  1575. asked God, God,

  1576. if you're real,

  1577. would you please

  1578. show yourself to

  1579. me?

  1580. In the

  1581. bulletin, there's

  1582. a prayer for

  1583. those searching

  1584. for truth.

  1585. It's on the

  1586. page titled

  1587. Prayers for

  1588. Communion.

  1589. When we serve

  1590. communion in a few

  1591. minutes, let me

  1592. encourage you to

  1593. consider that

  1594. prayer.

  1595. Second, for

  1596. those of us who

  1597. are Christians,

  1598. will we let God's

  1599. word speak to our

  1600. fears and our

  1601. problems and our

  1602. crises?

  1603. You know, the

  1604. right kind of fear

  1605. can be clarifying.

1606. It can jolt us out of

  1607. apathy and

  1608. complacency.

1609. It can give us a

  1610. laser-like focus and

  1611. clarity to face the

  1612. challenges before us or

  1613. to flee the temptations

  1614. that ensnare us.

  1615. Sometimes we need a

  1616. little bit of that

  1617. right kind of fear,

  1618. which begins with the

  1619. fear of God.

1620. All the right kinds of

  1621. fear are ultimately

  1622. derived from the fear

  1623. of God.

1624. Because the fear of God

1625. gives us a respect for

1626. the order that God has

  1627. established in this

  1628. world.

  1629. And therefore, we

1630. learn to live wisely in

1631. the world that God has

  1632. made when we recognize

  1633. that there's a maker of

  1634. this world who ordered

  1635. it.

1636. And so, we ought to

  1637. respect His design for

  1638. things.

  1639. There's a right kind of

  1640. fear, but there's a

  1641. wrong kind of fear.

1642. And the wrong kind of

1643. fear, the kind of fear

  1644. that Ahaz had,

  1645. God just further

  1646. confuses us.

  1647. It further creates

  1648. clouds of dust.

  1649. Sometimes fear can

  1650. paralyze us.

  1651. Sometimes fear can

1652. drive us into a frenzy

  1653. of chaotic activity.

1654. But to be honest, you

  1655. can't even quite explain

  1656. why you're doing what

  1657. you're doing.

  1658. You just know that

  1659. you're afraid and you're

  1660. running.

  1661. And you're spinning your

  1662. wheels.

1663. Sometimes we can get so

  1664. worried about our

  1665. concerns, that is,

  1666. things that we cannot

  1667. control.

  1668. And therefore,

  1669. ultimately, we need to

  1670. trust God with those

  1671. things, that we neglect

  1672. our responsibilities,

1673. the things that God has

1674. actually assigned us to do.

1675. One person said, we are

1676. always in danger of paying

1677. too much attention to the

  1678. passing and paying too

  1679. little attention to the

  1680. significant.

1681. So will we let God's

1682. words speak to our fears

  1683. and reshape our concerns?

1684. You see, on the one hand, the

1685. sign of Emmanuel is a warning,

1686. as it was to King Ahaz.

1687. Whatever we trust in place of

1688. God will eventually turn on us

  1689. and destroy us.

1690. But on the other hand, the

1691. sign of Emmanuel is a comfort.

1692. Because we can look at Jesus

1693. and see, God has come to be

  1694. with us.

1695. That's how Matthew begins his

1696. gospel, by introducing Jesus as

  1697. Emmanuel, God with us.

1698. And what's the last word of the

  1699. gospel of Matthew?

1700. Jesus says to his disciples,

1701. go and make disciples of all

1702. nations, and I am with you

  1703. always.

1704. to the very end of the age.

1705. Emmanuel has come to be with

1706. us, and he's promised to stay

1707. with us, and never leave us,

  1708. and never forsake us.

1709. And so he's with us in our

1710. problems, in our crises, in our

  1711. fears.

  1712. Don't live as if he's not.

  1713. He's not absent.

1714. Brothers and sisters, do not

  1715. fear the wrong things.

1716. For God is with us.

  1717. Let us pray.

1718. Father God, we thank you for

1719. speaking to us in the midst of

  1720. our fears.

1721. We thank you that you do not

1722. only speak to us from afar,

1723. but we thank you that in Jesus

1724. Christ you have come to dwell

1725. with us, that we would know

1726. that we are never alone in all

1727. the battles we face, in all the

1728. uncertainties of life in this

  1729. unpredictable and fallen world.

1730. Lord, we thank you that you are

1731. the rock upon which we can stand.

1732. We thank you that you are the

1733. one who can give us courage and

1734. confidence, who can give us

  1735. humility and peace.

1736. We pray that we would take heed,

1737. that we would listen and obey

  1738. your word.

1739. We pray that in this Advent season

1740. that we would know your presence

  1741. with us.

1742. We pray that we would

  1743. forsake our

  1744. loyalties that are

  1745. misguided,

  1746. that we would

  1747. not trust

  1748. other people or other

  1749. things

  1750. that we should not

  1751. be trusting in.

1752. That we would trust in you

  1753. alone above all

  1754. things.

1755. And that you would give us

  1756. wisdom

1757. to live wisely in this world.

1758. We pray that as we

1759. come to the Lord's Supper,

  1760. that you would

1761. nourish us and strengthen us

  1762. to live by faith

1763. in the one who died for us

1764. and rose again from the dead.

1765. We pray in his name,

  1766. Jesus our Lord.

  1767. Amen.

  1768. Amen.

  1769. Amen.

  1770. Amen.

  1771. Amen.
