  1. Amen.

  2. Welcome to the second Sunday in Advent.

  3. Our reading for the sermon this morning is the book of Isaiah, chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  4. Reading the first seven verses.

  5. If you want to look in your pew Bible, it's page 536.

  6. If you will turn there with me, we will read it together.

  7. Isaiah 9, verse 1.

    Isaiah 9:1

  8. But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish.

  9. In the former time, he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali.

  10. But in the latter time, he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan,

  11. Galilee of the nations.

  12. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

  13. Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.

  14. You have multiplied the nation.

  15. You have increased its joy.

  16. They rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

  17. For the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor,

  18. you have broken as on the day of Midian.

  19. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult, and every garment rolled in blood will be

  20. burned as fuel for the fire.

  21. For to us, a child is born.

  22. To us, a son is given.

  23. And the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,

  24. Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  25. Of the increase of his government and of peace, there will be no end.

  26. On the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice

  27. and righteousness from this time forth and forevermore, the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

  28. Will you pray with me?

  29. Amen.

  30. Lord, this morning, as we come to your word, we are humbled, humbled by the power and the majesty

  31. of the words that you give us, because they point us to you and your great power and your great majesty.

  32. Lord, I pray this morning that we would find comfort and joy, awe and wonder as we contemplate the coming of your son, Jesus,

  33. and the great things that you have done for us in him.

  34. Lord, I pray for your help that you would give me words.

  35. Lord, I pray for all of us that our ears would be opened and our hearts would be ready to receive your word this morning.

  36. Lord, we pray these things in Jesus' name.

  37. Amen.

  38. And they will be thrust into deep darkness.

  39. If you look just before the passage, the end of chapter 8, those are the words that set up the passage that we're looking at this morning.

  40. This passage is a well-known prophecy.

  41. We hear it in Handel's Messiah.

  42. This is one of those passages that if you've been around Christians, if you've been around Christmas, you've heard these.

  43. But to think about the context, it's important to recognize that 700 years before the coming of Jesus,

  44. the people of God were looking ahead for hope that they desperately needed because they had been thrust into deep darkness.

  45. And I wonder if this Christmas season you can relate.

  46. I wonder if you have felt like you have been thrust into deep darkness.

  47. Maybe you open up your browser or you get your feed, RSS feed on your phone,

  48. and you see the news of the world where we see wars and rumors of wars,

  49. conflict and suffering from famine.

  50. And we think the world is a dark place to live.

  51. You read the news of society.

  52. And you hear about sex trafficking and the suffering of immigrants.

  53. We read about misbehavior in every level of society, from governments to Hollywood,

  54. from church leaders to sports stars to everyday homes.

  55. The darkness seems great at times.

  56. Maybe the darkness has come into your home as well as you live with chronic illness,

  57. as you struggle in a strained marriage, as you weep over broken friendships,

  58. as you face the fearsome reality of joblessness or homelessness,

  59. as you walk in the quiet suffering of deep aloneness,

  60. as you grieve the loss of ones you've loved.

  61. Maybe the deep darkness that you know so deeply is the deep darkness of your own heart,

  62. where you've seen your own failures,

  63. and the worst of you come out,

  64. where you think,

  65. why can't I be better than that?

  66. Why do I always do that so poorly?

  67. Why do I hurt those that I love?

  68. Deep darkness is around us in every place.

  69. And in Israel,

  70. 730 years before Christ,

  71. they had been thrust into deep darkness,

  72. just as we today maybe feel the same way.

  73. And like them,

  74. we long for God to act decisively

  75. and to show that the darkness will not win.

  76. The darkness does not have the last word.

  77. It's to this that our text points to this morning.

  78. And the darkness,

  79. as we've alluded to already,

  80. but we want to unpack a little more.

  81. The darkness in the 8th century BC

  82. had a particular shape.

  83. If you were here last week,

  84. Pastor Greg gave a great explanation of the history.

  85. I'm going to try to summarize it.

  86. King Ahaz,

  87. sitting on the throne of the southern kingdom

  88. of God's people in Jerusalem,

  89. had shown himself to be fearful

  90. and faithless before God.

  91. And in trying to save his own skin,

  92. he had made terrible allegiances

  93. with the Assyrian nation,

  94. the nation to the north of Israel

  95. to try to save him.

  96. And what we've seen in chapter 8,

  97. if you went back and you looked at the end,

  98. is that the prophet Isaiah came to Ahaz

  99. and said,

  100. because you have abandoned God,

  101. darkness will come to this land.

  102. The northern kingdom will be conquered

  103. by this Assyria.

  104. And you will be left wondering,

  105. has God abandoned me?

  106. You will be left wearing a heavy yoke

  107. of oppression by the Assyrian rule.

  108. You will know that it has been your own sin

  109. and faithlessness that has ruined you.

  110. And you will know the reality

  111. that evil now has the power over your land.

  112. Now this never came to Jerusalem.

  113. It only happened to the northern kingdom

  114. from Assyria.

  115. And yet it is in this context

  116. that chapter 9 breaks into

  117. the narrative that Isaiah is giving

  118. and the message that he is giving

  119. to God's people.

  120. A message of hope comes

  121. that God has not abandoned his people,

  122. but will send one who will deliver his people

  123. and deliver them from the darkness.

  124. Two questions

  125. that this text answers this morning.

  126. One, whom will he send?

  127. And two, what will the one who he sends do?

  128. So that's what we're going to look at this morning

  129. in our next couple of minutes.

  130. First of all, whom will he send?

  131. Well, verse 6 is the answer.

  132. And you, if you've heard Handel's Messiah,

  133. I hope the little, you know,

  134. soprano line is singing in your ears.

  135. Unto us the child is born.

  136. Unto us.

  137. And so on and so forth.

  138. It's a beautiful place.

  139. If you don't know Handel's Messiah,

  140. if you're not familiar with classical music,

  141. this is your entree.

  142. Go listen to Handel's Messiah.

  143. It's a beautiful piece of music.

  144. Anyway, that's my aside.

  145. So verse 6, though,

  146. is the core of this hope

  147. in terms of who God will send.

  148. For to us, a child is born.

  149. To us, a son is given.

  150. And the government shall be upon his shoulder

  151. and his name shall be called

  152. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

  153. Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  154. God says that though right now

  155. the darkness comes with this power

  156. that is ruling over you,

  157. this government that is oppressing you,

  158. this consequence for your own

  159. faithlessness and sinfulness

  160. where you are suffering,

  161. there is going to be one

  162. who will take a throne of government

  163. that will break these powers,

  164. that will lose the control that they have,

  165. and will establish himself

  166. as the rightful ruler.

  167. This child is not going to be,

  168. as we saw earlier in chapter 7,

  169. a human baby.

  170. This is not the child of Isaiah

  171. and his wife,

  172. Mahar, Shalal, Hashbaz.

  173. This is not even Hezekiah,

  174. the next king of Israel.

  175. The dates don't add up.

  176. You can do the math.

  177. We'll figure it out later.

  178. But what this is,

  179. is the fulfillment of the idea

  180. that God has begun to bring

  181. from chapter 7

  182. that we looked at last week.

  183. This promise that God

  184. is going to use children as signs

  185. that He has not abandoned His people.

  186. That this Emmanuel isn't,

  187. in the Old Testament,

  188. simply just one child or one person,

  189. but it is a series of events

  190. where God is reminding His people,

  191. I will be with you.

  192. And in the end,

  193. it is pointing towards one

  194. who will come

  195. and fulfill all of these things.

  196. But when you look at verse 6

  197. and verse 7,

  198. you know that no human being

  199. will ever take this throne.

  200. No human being will be able

  201. to fulfill this role

  202. where the increase of His government

  203. and the peace will have no end.

  204. Is there any human ruler

  205. who has ever established that?

  206. No.

  207. And never will be.

  208. But He will come

  209. and He will establish a government.

  210. This promised one will come

  211. and His established government

  212. will bring the reign of God

  213. on earth.

  214. And He will be a mighty counselor,

  215. one who is both

  216. the fount of all wisdom

  217. and also a great advocate

  218. for His people

  219. before a holy God.

  220. He will be a mighty God

  221. whose power has no rival

  222. where there is no power

  223. on this earth,

  224. whether it be governmental

  225. or societal,

  226. whether it be personal.

  227. No power

  228. that He cannot overcome

  229. and that He will not overcome.

  230. He is the everlasting Father,

  231. the one who is from ages past

  232. and will live on to eternity

  233. so His kingdom will never fail.

  234. And as a father,

  235. here is more of an image

  236. that He will be one

  237. who will provide and protect

  238. for His people

  239. like a perfect father ought to,

  240. provide and protect

  241. for His home,

  242. for His family,

  243. for His household,

  244. so God will do that

  245. for His creation,

  246. for His world.

  247. And this one will come

  248. and sit on that throne

  249. and reign in that way.

  250. And He will be

  251. the Prince of Peace.

  252. The threats,

  253. the violence,

  254. the evil,

  255. the destruction,

  256. the suffering,

  257. they will end.

  258. One commentator said,

  259. there are no titles enough

  260. to capture all that He is

  261. and all that He will bring.

  262. This is just a taste

  263. of the greatness

  264. of the one

  265. that God will send.

  266. And so God gives

  267. to the nation of Israel

  268. this hope

  269. that though they are experiencing

  270. now great darkness,

  271. God has not left them

  272. or abandoned them,

  273. but that He will send one

  274. who will establish a kingdom

  275. whereby the darkness

  276. will never return.

  277. What will He do?

  278. What will this one do

  279. when He comes?

  280. This is what we're going

  281. to look at now.

  282. We look at these promises

  283. of as He comes

  284. broken up into three different things.

  285. That He will come

  286. and He will deliver

  287. God's people

  288. from contempt to glory.

  289. In verse 1,

  290. He will deliver us

  291. from darkness to joy

  292. in verses 2 and 3.

  293. He will deliver us

  294. from oppression

  295. to righteousness

  296. in 4 through 7.

  297. So let's look at these

  298. briefly together.

  299. First,

  300. the one who will come

  301. will deliver us

  302. from contempt to glory.

  303. Now,

  304. you look at this first verse

  305. and you think,

  306. I'm not really sure

  307. what He is saying here.

  308. Right?

  309. What you need to know

  310. is that

  311. Zebulun and Naphtali,

  312. all right?

  313. Here's your map.

  314. Here's the Mediterranean Sea

  315. and here's

  316. the nation of Israel

  317. and at the northern end

  318. of the nation of Israel

  319. are Zebulun and Naphtali.

  320. In fact,

  321. they are on the route.

  322. If you have a map

  323. of the Middle East

  324. and you're on,

  325. there's a fertile crescent,

  326. right?

  327. Out here is Devart.

  328. There's a fertile crescent

  329. that has to do with rivers

  330. and this is where

  331. all the civilizations were

  332. and up here is Assyria

  333. and over here is Babylon.

  334. And so,

  335. the route,

  336. the trade routes

  337. and the invasion routes

  338. all come down this road

  339. and Zebulun and Naphtali

  340. were the entrance point

  341. for all the attacks

  342. from these great nations

  343. onto Israel.

  344. They were also,

  345. because of that,

  346. the great place

  347. of interaction

  348. and in the view

  349. of Israel over time,

  350. the place of loss

  351. of purity

  352. or clarity

  353. of the nation of Israel.

  354. There was interaction

  355. with these other nations

  356. in ways that God

  357. had wanted his people

  358. to be set apart.

  359. And so,

  360. in this northern area,

  361. this is where

  362. the nation of Israel

  363. lost its identity

  364. and became a byword.

  365. It became a place of shame

  366. and a place of contempt.

  367. Place of shame

  368. because this is where

  369. their nation

  370. had been conquered from

  371. and contempt

  372. because this is where

  373. they had lost

  374. their identity.

  375. If you think about

  376. how Jews treated

  377. the Samaritans

  378. in the first century,

  379. if you know that story,

  380. you're not worth anything.

  381. You're a half-breed.

  382. You're not really

  383. a part of this nation.

  384. You're soiled,

  385. defaced,

  386. disgraced,

  387. rejected,

  388. condemned,

  389. hated.

  390. This was the contempt

  391. that fell upon

  392. this northern part

  393. because of their history.

  394. This was the way

  395. that they were viewed.

  396. And God says

  397. in the former time,

  398. that's right.

  399. This is a place

  400. of contempt.

  401. But look with me again

  402. in verse 1.

  403. But in the latter time,

  404. he has made glorious

  405. the way to the sea.

  406. The way to the sea

  407. is that same trade route,

  408. that same invasion route,

  409. that same,

  410. that comes right

  411. through that place.

  412. God comes

  413. and when this child

  414. comes

  415. and establishes

  416. his government,

  417. that place

  418. that was known

  419. as the place

  420. of contempt

  421. and scorn,

  422. he will make it

  423. a place

  424. of glory.

  425. What does that mean?

  426. What does that look like?

  427. You know,

  428. right down the street

  429. from the place

  430. where my kids

  431. go to school

  432. on Lenox Street

  433. over in Fairhaven,

  434. there's a house

  435. on the corner

  436. and I've been going

  437. there now

  438. for four years

  439. and you drive

  440. by this house

  441. and it's a fairly

  442. nice neighborhood

  443. until you get

  444. to the end

  445. of the street

  446. and the street

  447. on this house

  448. on the right-hand side,

  449. it was a disaster.

  450. The windows

  451. were broken,

  452. the door

  453. was even open

  454. half of the time,

  455. the foundation

  456. had holes in it,

  457. the paint

  458. was peeling,

  459. the roof

  460. was slowly decaying.

  461. It was a mess.

  462. It was a terrible,

  463. terrible blight

  464. on the neighborhood.

  465. The neighbors

  466. were worried

  467. about it.

  468. It was a mess.

  469. It was a mess.

  470. It was a mess.

  471. It was a mess.

  472. It was a mess.

  473. Last year,

  474. Habitat for Humanity

  475. took on this house

  476. as a project.

  477. I get to see Antoine

  478. all the time

  479. as I'm picking my kids

  480. up from school.

  481. I stop and wave

  482. at Antoine

  483. because he's there.

  484. He's managing this project.

  485. If you don't know Antoine,

  486. he works for Habitat for Humanity

  487. in the city.

  488. He's a part of our church

  489. and that house

  490. has regained a glory.

  491. It has been renewed

  492. in a beautiful way.

  493. It has new siding,

  494. new windows,

  495. a new door.

  496. The last week,

  497. a new front porch

  498. went in with steps.

  499. But not only did they

  500. fix the exterior,

  501. but they fixed

  502. the interior too.

  503. You watch them

  504. pull it down

  505. to its studs.

  506. They actually

  507. raised the whole frame

  508. and relayed

  509. the foundation

  510. of the house

  511. so that the family

  512. that will move in,

  513. Lord willing,

  514. at the end of this month

  515. will move into a house

  516. that has a glory

  517. of a home

  518. where they will be able

  519. to be a family

  520. and to live.

  521. Friends,

  522. this is what it looks like

  523. for God

  524. to restore glory

  525. to something

  526. that was contemptible

  527. and shameful.

  528. And this is what God

  529. is doing

  530. at the northern parts

  531. of Israel.

  532. He's saying this place

  533. of invasion

  534. is now

  535. something else.

  536. No longer

  537. are you worthless,

  538. but you are valued.

  539. No longer

  540. are you soiled

  541. and defaced,

  542. but you are cleaned

  543. and renewed.

  544. No longer

  545. are you rejected,

  546. but you are welcomed.

  547. No longer hated

  548. and condemned,

  549. but loved

  550. and exalted.

  551. This is the pattern

  552. of the one

  553. who will come

  554. and establish

  555. his government.

  556. and not only

  557. did he come

  558. and do this

  559. for the nation Israel,

  560. but he will do it

  561. for us.

  562. Christ has come

  563. for you

  564. who feel

  565. that you are the one

  566. who is called

  567. contemptible.

  568. He has come

  569. to do a work

  570. of renovation

  571. in your life

  572. to restore

  573. the glory

  574. that God

  575. gave you

  576. in creation

  577. that has been

  578. marred

  579. by sin

  580. and suffering.

  581. for those

  582. of you

  583. who feel

  584. outside,

  585. who look

  586. at the church

  587. and think,

  588. well,

  589. isn't that

  590. a group

  591. of people

  592. who look

  593. good

  594. and have

  595. it all

  596. together?

  597. I don't belong

  598. there.

  599. Christ has come

  600. for you.

  601. For those

  602. of you

  603. who felt

  604. marginalized,

  605. well,

  606. whoever those

  607. people are,

  608. I'm sure

  609. I can't measure

  610. up to their

  611. standards.

  612. I'm not good

  613. enough.

  614. Christ has come

  615. for you

  616. to say,

  617. come in.

  618. Christ,

  619. when he came,

  620. said,

  621. I have not

  622. come for the

  623. healthy,

  624. but for the

  625. sick.

  626. For those

  627. of you

  628. who know

  629. you need

  630. him,

  631. but feel

  632. like maybe

  633. you can't

  634. come in,

  635. know that

  636. Christ has

  637. come for

  638. you

  639. to bring

  640. glory

  641. to the

  642. contempt

  643. of your

  644. life,

  645. to restore

  646. you and

  647. to renew

  648. you,

  649. and to

  650. buy faith

  651. in him

  652. know the

  653. hope of

  654. Christ in

  655. you,

  656. the hope

  657. of glory.

  658. Not only

  659. does this

  660. one come

  661. to deliver

  662. us from

  663. contempt to

  664. glory,

  665. but he also

  666. in verses

  667. two and

  668. three turns

  669. us from

  670. darkness to

  671. joy.

  672. Look with

  673. me again,

  674. verses two

  675. and three.

  676. The darkness

  677. here is

  678. related to

  679. the exile.

  680. It is

  681. related to

  682. the loss

  683. of the

  684. light of

  685. their identity

  686. as God's

  687. special people

  688. protected by

  689. God.

  690. It is not

  691. only darkness,

  692. but deep

  693. darkness,

  694. if you see

  695. in verse

  696. two.

  697. And if you

  698. listened

  699. carefully earlier

  700. when John

  701. read from

  702. Matthew,

  703. the deep

  704. darkness is

  705. also the

  706. shadow of

  707. death.

  708. For in the

  709. Bible,

  710. darkness and

  711. death are

  712. often related

  713. thematically.

  714. In the

  715. experience of

  716. the exile,

  717. in the

  718. experience of

  719. the invasion

  720. of the

  721. series,

  722. in the

  723. experience of

  724. God's

  725. judgment,

  726. the nation

  727. of Israel

  728. felt that

  729. what had

  730. once been

  731. fair and

  732. flourishing,

  733. the people

  734. of God

  735. in the

  736. place of

  737. God,

  738. had now

  739. become

  740. ruined.

  741. I have a

  742. fascination

  743. with natural

  744. disasters.

  745. It goes way

  746. back to my

  747. childhood.

  748. When I was

  749. 10, I was

  750. reading about

  751. tornadoes and

  752. hurricanes and

  753. stuff like

  754. that.

  755. I don't know

  756. if you saw

  757. the pictures

  758. of the

  759. Florida Panhandle

  760. after the

  761. hurricane hit

  762. it.

  763. Places where

  764. once there was

  765. a community

  766. and neighborhoods,

  767. there is now

  768. simply concrete

  769. slabs.

  770. Where there

  771. were trees

  772. and vegetation,

  773. there were

  774. at best

  775. sticks and

  776. stumps.

  777. And the

  778. power had

  779. gone out,

  780. like really

  781. gone out.

  782. There would

  783. be no light

  784. there for

  785. weeks and

  786. weeks.

  787. This

  788. natural

  789. devastation

  790. maybe gives

  791. us a sense

  792. of how the

  793. people of

  794. Israel felt

  795. the darkness

  796. had descended

  797. on their

  798. land and

  799. on their

  800. nation.

  801. And into

  802. this darkness,

  803. God sends

  804. this one

  805. who will

  806. bring light.

  807. When you

  808. look at two

  809. and three,

  810. it's this

  811. picture of

  812. establishing and

  813. renewing the

  814. land.

  815. The nation is

  816. multiplying and

  817. flourishing.

  818. Rather than it

  819. feeling like decay,

  820. destruction, and

  821. ruin, the nation is

  822. now flourishing and

  823. growing and

  824. expanding.

  825. And not only is it

  826. expanding seemingly

  827. in size and in

  828. prosperity, but it's

  829. expanding in joy.

  830. Look with me at

  831. verse three.

  832. They rejoice before

  833. you, that is, the

  834. people of God as

  835. they see this one

  836. come.

  837. They're rejoicing

  838. before God as with

  839. the joy of the

  840. harvest.

  841. As in, as they are

  842. reaping the fruits of

  843. God's abundant

  844. goodness and

  845. deliverance to

  846. them.

  847. As they are glad

  848. when they divide the

  849. spoil, that is, as

  850. they have experienced

  851. victory over their

  852. enemies, as they

  853. have experienced the

  854. establishment of

  855. peace, the gladness

  856. is that they get to

  857. sit and be a part of

  858. the everlasting kingdom

  859. that will not end.

  860. This joy is

  861. characteristic and

  862. it's this joy that

  863. is so different from

  864. the darkness.

  865. For the darkness is

  866. often a deep darkness

  867. of despair and fear.

  868. But this joy is in the

  869. rejoicing that God has

  870. not abandoned his

  871. people.

  872. He has not forgotten

  873. them and he has not

  874. failed them.

  875. But that he is sending

  876. this one.

  877. How about you?

  878. Has the hurricane come

  879. through your life?

  880. Maybe you feel right

  881. now like the

  882. eye wall has just

  883. passed and it's

  884. looking pretty grim.

  885. Maybe some of you

  886. have just had a

  887. glancing blow.

  888. Maybe you've seen the

  889. darkness of sorrow or

  890. depression, of

  891. abandonment or

  892. failure.

  893. fear.

  894. You feel like life is

  895. over.

  896. You feel like the

  897. darkness will never

  898. get better.

  899. God speaks a better

  900. word.

  901. He has not abandoned

  902. his people but he has

  903. come for his people.

  904. The light shines most

  905. brightly for those who

  906. have lived in the

  907. darkness.

  908. The hope is sweetest to

  909. those who have tasted

  910. despair.

  911. And the love is most

  912. glorious for those who

  913. have known rejection.

  914. in the midst of the

  915. darkness then the

  916. light has come.

  917. If you're a believer and

  918. you are going through a

  919. period where darkness

  920. seems to be the thing

  921. that is winning, the

  922. word here is hold on.

  923. because Christ has come and

  924. he will be victorious over

  925. that darkness.

  926. Don't give up.

  927. Don't give in.

  928. Don't despair and allow

  929. that darkness to rule you

  930. for Christ has come.

  931. If you're here this morning

  932. exploring Christianity, you're

  933. here because it's Christmas

  934. season, maybe you've come to

  935. recognize that there's

  936. something missing in your

  937. life.

  938. Maybe there's a nagging sense

  939. that there's a darkness in

  940. your life, a yawning, aching,

  941. longing for something, a

  942. spiritual darkness, a

  943. lostness in your life.

  944. The reason why we celebrate

  945. Christmas every year is to

  946. remember that God has come

  947. for us.

  948. That this light of Jesus has

  949. come to save us and deliver

  950. us from the darkness and he

  951. invites you to come.

  952. Come and know him.

  953. Come and know him and all of

  954. who he is.

  955. Come and find out more of what

  956. this book says about who he

  957. is.

  958. And we pray that in him you

  959. will find hope and by

  960. believing in him you will

  961. find life.

  962. You will find him who is the

  963. real joy of Christmas.

  964. So not only from contempt to

  965. glory, not only from darkness

  966. to joy, but finally from

  967. oppression to righteousness.

  968. Look with me at verses 4.

  969. 4 through 7.

  970. The images are striking,

  971. aren't they?

  972. The very tools and the

  973. weight of the Assyrian

  974. invasion, the yoke of his

  975. burden, the staff for his

  976. shoulder, the rod of his

  977. oppression.

  978. Those are talking about the

  979. implements of war and the

  980. weight of a heavy government

  981. being brought upon God's

  982. people.

  983. slavery and servitude.

  984. Listen, if you haven't ever

  985. explored, I think Greg

  986. mentioned this last week, but

  987. if you've never explored how

  988. evil the Assyrian empire was,

  989. Wikipedia, do something, look

  990. it up.

  991. It was a truly horrific rule.

  992. It was not a society that you

  993. would have wanted to be a part

  994. of.

  995. The boots of the soldiers

  996. trampled over the ground and

  997. the land of Israel and the

  998. garments of blood remind us that

  999. they came not as peaceful

  1000. occupiers, but as warlike

  1001. conquerors.

1002. And they came with death.

1003. But the promise here is that all

1004. of those tools will end.

  1005. The yoke is removed.

  1006. The staff is broken.

  1007. The rod is broken.

1008. As on the day of Midian, which

1009. reminds us of the story of Gideon

1010. in Judges 6 and 7, when Gideon,

1011. with a very small army that God

1012. made even smaller, intervened and

1013. defeated the enemies of God's

1014. people in a miraculous way.

1015. God did an unlooked for and

1016. surprising victory in ways that you

1017. could never have seen because he

1018. did it without military might and

  1019. power.

1020. God is promising his people that

1021. those implements of warfare are not

1022. the last word, but that he will

  1023. break them.

1024. God is promising his people that

1025. those implements of oppression will

  1026. not continue forever.

1027. Now, we live in a world where

  1028. oppression does continue, doesn't

  1029. it?

1030. It happens on a global scale.

1031. Socioeconomic, the rich oppress the

  1032. poor.

1033. Racial tribes oppress other racial

  1034. tribes.

1035. Even in more genteel societies, we

1036. see gender discrimination and power

  1037. struggle.

1038. And in our personal lives, we see

1039. homes where oppressive abuse happens

  1040. on a regular basis.

1041. Oppression does happen on a global and

1042. on a personal level in these ways.

1043. We also recognize that the Bible says

1044. that the greatest oppressing force in

1045. our lives is actually the power of

  1046. sin.

1047. That the thing that we most are

1048. powerless over and the thing that

1049. most drives and controls us is our own

1050. evil hearts and our intent to live

1051. apart from God and the destruction that

1052. it causes in our lives.

1053. It is the weighty hand that rules over us

  1054. in our worst moments.

1055. And when we're honest, we recognize how

1056. often it still controls us and destroys us.

1057. Our life with God and our life with others.

1058. But verse 7 tells us that a new power has

  1059. come.

1060. There will be a government that will

1061. increase and grow until there is no other

  1062. government other than his.

1063. And he will establish a kingdom that will

1064. never fail but will go on forever.

1065. And he will establish justice and

  1066. righteousness.

  1067. righteousness.

1068. The wrongs that we face and the wrongs

1069. that we do and the wrongs, the evil that

1070. wells up in our hearts will no longer

  1071. control.

1072. That he will break their power.

1073. And he will establish instead justice and

1074. righteousness which is not merely vengeance

1075. but it is a life-giving establishment of all that

1076. is right and true and good.

1077. That we are right with God and right with one

  1078. another.

1079. And we as human beings under his rule will

1080. flourish and rejoice in one another.

1081. It is the very opposite of our fallen world

1082. and our fallen hearts when he comes to break

1083. the oppression and to establish rightness

1084. in our world and in our hearts.

1085. And friends, this is good news, isn't it?

1086. For we know how often we still face and

  1087. experience the oppression.

1088. We know that some of us are fighting today with

  1089. addictions.

  1090. Deep-seated patterns of sin.

  1091. Long stretches of failure.

1092. Where we feel helpless before our sin.

1093. Jesus has come to break those bonds.

1094. And to set you free from them.

1095. For is this not the very gospel that we preach

  1096. and that we proclaim?

1097. That we are dead in our sins and trespasses.

1098. That sin has a power over us that we cannot free

  1099. ourselves from.

1100. And the only hope and the only help we will find

1101. is not from improving ourselves but from looking

  1102. outside of ourselves.

1103. And God has come in the person of Jesus Christ

1104. to be that help from the outside.

1105. And by his perfect life and by his death on the cross

1106. bearing the penalty for our sin and breaking the power

  1107. of sin over us.

1108. By rising from the dead so that he might give new life.

1109. This is the great hope of the gospel for us.

1110. And it's not just for us as individuals but it is for our

  1111. society as well.

1112. We must not pit the oppression that he breaks of personal

1113. sin against the oppression of our society as if they're

  1114. separate.

1115. But in fact they are a weave of the power of sin in our

  1116. world.

1117. And we know that God has come to break those.

1118. And we know that he's not done doing those.

1119. And so it is right for us as his children to act for

1120. righteousness and justice in this world.

1121. We know that we know one who has the power and who wields

1122. the power to break those patterns.

1123. And we know that one day when his rule is fully established

1124. that those bonds of oppression, that that weight will be

  1125. broken.

1126. That the kingdom will come for the flourishing of all and

1127. flourishing of each one of us.

1128. But recognize at the very end, verse 7, the last line, to

1129. recognize that though we may work towards this, in the end, what

  1130. will accomplish this?

1131. It will be the zeal of the Lord.

1132. It will be the hand of the Lord who will bring this deliverance.

1133. It will be the person that God will send who will bring this

  1134. final victory.

1135. And friends, this is why in Matthew chapter 4, the passage that was read

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

1136. earlier this morning, the gospel writer refers to this passage.

1137. He says, Jesus is coming in the most unlikely way to bring a surprising

1138. redemption to remind you that God has not forgotten his promise.

1139. But in fact, he will fulfill his promise.

1140. Jesus comes out of Galilee in the north, a place of contempt in the first

  1141. century, to redeem him.

1142. Jesus comes not as a conquering warlord on a white horse with an army at his

1143. back, but he comes to a stable.

1144. And in Matthew 4, he's just beginning his ministry.

1145. And what has he started with?

1146. Temptation and exile in the wilderness.

1147. And he comes out of that.

1148. And Matthew says, do you see this one?

1149. He's coming from the north.

1150. He's coming to redeem Zebulun and Naphtali, Galilee of the Gentiles.

1151. He's coming to bring the fulfillment of the promise that light will win over

1152. darkness because he is the child that will be born.

1153. He is the one upon whom the government will rest.

1154. He is the coming king who has come to rescue us and to save us and to deliver us.

1155. But he does that not by great overpowering might and by fighting with the weapons of this warfare,

1156. but he does it with the incredible grace of offering himself to die in our place.

1157. And he breaks the power of darkness and of contempt and of oppression by taking those things upon himself.

  1158. He was scorned.

1159. He was abandoned to the darkness by his friends.

1160. He was oppressed in his crucifixion, in his death.

1161. He took those things on himself to free us to come so that we might have life,

1162. so that we might have freedom, so that we might have glory and joy and righteousness in God.

1163. Friends, this is the good news of Christmas.

1164. This is the good news of the gospel.

1165. And this is why we sing,

1166. Joy to the world, the Lord has come.

1167. Let earth receive her king.

1168. Let every heart prepare him room.

1169. And heaven and nature sing.

  1170. Let's pray together.

1171. Lord, we thank you for this word.

1172. We thank you for the word of hope that you bring us.

1173. Lord, that you have remembered your promises and you have remembered your people.

1174. And you have come to us in love.

1175. You have come to us in the person of Jesus.

1176. Who comes, Lord, as our savior, as our deliverer, as our king.

1177. Lord, we do pray that as we walk through this season, Lord, we would be renewed in hope.

1178. Lord, and that in hope we would be renewed in our devotion and our love for Christ who has come for us.

1179. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  1180. Amen.
