  1. Turn with me in your Bibles to Isaiah chapter 50.

    Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  2. I want to welcome you if you're visiting in town for the holiday or here with family members or friends.

  3. Glad that you've joined us this morning.

  4. This month, the month that we anticipate and celebrate the coming of Jesus into the world.

  5. We've been doing a sermon series in the prophet Isaiah on messianic prophecies from the book of Isaiah.

  6. How the prophecy of Isaiah points to the person of Christ.

  7. Isaiah lived about 700 years before the coming of Jesus in the late 8th century BC.

  8. And yet the New Testament quotes from the book of Isaiah more than almost any other book.

  9. Over 75 times.

  10. And it refers and alludes to it even more than that.

  11. But what we're doing this month is looking at five of these texts that are used in the New Testament to help us understand the significance of Jesus.

  12. So as we look at these texts that were written hundreds of years before Jesus.

  13. And were studied for hundreds of years in anticipation of someone who would come.

  14. We are looking at how they shed light on the significance of Jesus coming into the world.

  15. So this morning we're looking at Isaiah chapter 50.

    Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  16. And I'm going to read the entire chapter.

  17. Isaiah 50.

  18. And if you're looking in the pew Bibles, the page number is in your bulletin if you're looking for that.

  19. Isaiah 50.

  20. Thus says the Lord.

  21. These are God's words to the people of Israel.

  22. Where is your mother's certificate of divorce with which I sent her away?

  23. Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you?

  24. Behold, for your iniquities you were sold.

  25. And for your transgressions your mother was sent away.

  26. Why when I came was there no man?

  27. Why when I called was there no one to answer?

  28. Is my hand shortened that it cannot redeem?

  29. Or have I no power to deliver?

  30. Behold, by my rebuke I dry up the sea.

  31. I make the rivers a desert.

  32. Their fish stink for lack of water and die of thirst.

  33. I clothe the heavens with blackness and make sackcloth their covering.

  34. The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught.

  35. That I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary.

  36. Morning by morning he awakens.

  37. He awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

  38. The Lord God has opened my ear.

  39. And I was not rebellious.

  40. I turned not backward.

  41. I gave my back to those who strike and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard.

  42. I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.

  43. But the Lord God helps me.

  44. Therefore, I have not been disgraced.

  45. Therefore, I have set my face like a flint.

  46. And I know that I shall not be put to shame.

  47. He who vindicates me is near.

  48. Who will contend with me?

  49. Let us stand up together.

  50. Who is my adversary?

  51. Let him come near to me.

  52. Behold, the Lord God helps me.

  53. Who will declare me guilty?

  54. Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment.

  55. The moth will eat them up.

  56. Who among you fears the Lord?

  57. And obeys the voice of his servant.

  58. Let him who walks in darkness and has no light.

  59. Trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.

  60. Behold, all you who kindle a fire.

  61. Who equip yourselves with burning torches.

  62. Walk by the light of your fire.

  63. And by the torches that you have kindled.

  64. This you have for my hand.

  65. You shall lie down in torment.

  66. Let's pray.

  67. God, we thank you for assembling us together this morning.

  68. We thank you for this text which has been preserved for us for literally thousands of years.

  69. We pray that you would speak to us by the power of your spirit through it.

  70. We pray that you would speak the message that each of us needs to hear this morning.

  71. And we commit this time to you in Jesus' name.

  72. Amen.

  73. Amen.

  74. Have you ever felt like you were walking in the darkness?

  75. Maybe you've walked or maybe you are walking through the darkness of trouble.

  76. Perhaps you're battling sickness or chronic pain.

  77. Maybe it seems like you can barely make it physically from one day to the next.

  78. Perhaps you're in a season of loneliness or loss.

  79. Maybe it feels like nobody else really understands.

  80. Nobody else really knows.

  81. Perhaps nobody else really cares what you're going through.

  82. Perhaps you're dealing with disappointment as you look into the past.

  83. And as you look into the future, the future only seems bleak.

  84. Maybe you're walking in the darkness of trouble.

  85. But perhaps you're also...

  86. Another kind of darkness.

  87. Maybe you're walking in the darkness of sin.

  88. Perhaps you're caught in habitual sin.

  89. One of those things that you've said over and over.

  90. I'll never do it again.

  91. And yet you still go back to it.

  92. The Bible says that sin darkens our minds.

  93. In other words, it confuses and distorts our perception of reality.

  94. Maybe you've been living in the darkness of deception.

  95. And half-truths and avoidance.

  96. You tell lies because you feel ashamed.

  97. You feel powerless to deal with reality so you run away from it.

  98. Maybe you've said to yourself, my sin is so great.

  99. How could God ever rescue me from it?

  100. Or even if he can, would God even want to rescue me?

  101. Maybe your sin and your trouble are tangled up together.

  102. Your trouble reminds you of your sin.

  103. And it's like a knot that you can't untie.

  104. And it just gets more and more tangled up.

  105. Well, this section of Isaiah was written for a group of people who were in a lot of trouble.

  106. Because they had sinned a lot.

  107. It was written for a group of people who felt like they were walking in the darkness and had no light.

  108. They couldn't see any hope.

  109. Any way forward.

  110. This morning I want to look at this passage in three parts.

  111. Verse 1 to 3 speaks about the people's sin.

  112. Verses 4 to the darkness that they were walking in.

  113. Verses 4 to 9 speaks about a servant's obedience.

  114. And verses 10 and 11 speak about our hope.

  115. The people's sin, the servant's obedience, and our hope.

  116. So let's jump into the first part.

  117. Verse 1 begins rather abruptly.

  118. Where is your mother's certificate of divorce with which I sent her away?

  119. Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you?

  120. Behold, for your iniquities you were sold.

  121. And for your transgressions your mother was sent away.

  122. You might say, what in the world is Isaiah talking about here?

  123. Well, he's speaking to the people of Israel.

  124. And he's speaking to them.

  125. He's speaking about the time of the Babylonian exile when they were removed from their homeland.

  126. When the temple was destroyed.

  127. The kingdom was abolished.

  128. The cities were ruined.

  129. Everything was gone.

  130. They were given into the hands of their enemies.

  131. They were taken hundreds of miles away.

  132. It was a terrible disaster.

  133. And that's why Isaiah compares it to a divorce or to a bankruptcy proceeding.

  134. Except in the ancient world, a bankruptcy proceeding meant you basically became the slave of your creditor.

  135. It was even worse than bankruptcy today.

  136. It's something that leaves you reeling and trying to recover for not just days, not just months, but for years to come.

  137. And the section of Isaiah is speaking to the people who are in this situation.

  138. And if you look back at chapter 49, because chapter 50 doesn't come out of nowhere.

  139. It's in a longer section.

  140. Chapter 49, verse 14.

  141. This is what the people were saying.

  142. In other words, the people were saying our sin and our trouble is just too much.

  143. God must have given up on us.

  144. God must have left us behind and gone on to someone else for good.

  145. Now, if you read the rest of chapter 49, which we're not going to look at in detail this morning,

  146. God basically says two things.

  147. First, he says, I want to help you.

  148. Verses 15 to 21.

  149. God says, I love you even more than a mother loves her baby.

  150. I have not forgotten you.

  151. And then God says, in verse 22 to 26, I can help you.

  152. I don't just want to help you.

  153. I can.

  154. I have the power to help you.

  155. I am your redeemer, the mighty one of Jacob.

  156. I have not forsaken you.

  157. And I have not forgotten you.

  158. Even in the middle of all your trouble, and even though all this trouble is your own fault,

  159. I am with you.

  160. And then we come to the beginning of chapter 50.

  161. Now, these first three verses of chapter 50 are a bit of a hard word.

  162. Basically, God is getting in the people's face a little bit.

  163. He's saying, let's be real about why you're in all this trouble that you're in.

  164. For your iniquities, you were sold.

  165. For your transgressions, your mother.

  166. So the mother is referring to the prior generation of Israel.

  167. Okay?

  168. For your transgressions, your mother was sent away.

  169. In other words, Isaiah is saying, the trouble you're in is your own fault.

  170. And it wasn't just because of a mistake you made or even a failure.

  171. No, he uses a far more serious word.

  172. Your iniquities.

  173. That is your transgressions.

  174. Your flagrant, ongoing, serious violations of my covenant.

  175. And then verse 2 he says.

  176. He says, I didn't just leave you alone.

  177. I came calling.

  178. I came knocking at your door.

  179. And no one answered.

  180. God is saying, don't act like your trouble came out of nowhere.

  181. Don't say that I didn't want to help you.

  182. And don't say that I can't help you.

  183. The second half of 2 and first half of the rest of verse 3.

  184. Is my hand shortened that it cannot redeem?

  185. Or have I no power to deliver?

  186. God is saying, remember who I am.

  187. I'm the Lord of the universe.

  188. I'm the God who holds all things together.

  189. And I'm also the Lord who brought judgment on the land of Egypt.

  190. Who turned the river to blood and made the sky dark so that I could redeem you.

  191. And set you free from your slavery there.

  192. In other words, God is saying, don't say that I don't want to help you.

  193. Don't say that I can't help you.

  194. God is saying to his people, we need to get real.

  195. Now let me be very clear here.

  196. In this fallen world, sometimes trouble comes upon us through no direct fault of our own.

  197. The Bible acknowledges that in many places.

  198. The book of Job is an entire book all about that theme.

  199. When all kinds of trouble comes upon someone and it wasn't a direct result of anything he did.

  200. So if you're dealing with all kinds of trouble, sickness, loss, disappointment, or even worse,

  201. if other people are attacking you or falsely accusing you or trying to take advantage of you,

  202. that does not necessarily mean that you are on the wrong path or that God is disciplining you.

  203. Sometimes people blame themselves for things that they never had any control over

  204. and that were never their responsibility in the first place.

  205. And if that's you, you might need to be reminded today

  206. the specific trouble you're walking through is not your fault.

  207. On the other hand,

  208. many times we are the cause of our own troubles.

  209. At least in part.

  210. And many times we don't want to face up to our own part.

  211. Instead, we want to pity ourselves and say,

  212. I deserve better.

  213. Why is the world so unfair?

  214. Or we blame God and say that if we ran the universe,

  215. we would do so slightly differently.

  216. Or we want to blame everybody and everything else in the world before we look at ourselves.

  217. We're not willing to acknowledge that we have dug the pit that we now find ourselves in.

  218. When I was a boy in second grade,

  219. I was always looking for ways to correct my teacher.

  220. It's probably my lowest point in that regard.

  221. Because I was clever and I had a technical mind,

  222. sometimes I succeeded.

  223. It was a hard year for my teacher.

  224. And I think a year or two later,

  225. I don't remember exactly the chronology,

  226. but at one point I finally went back and apologized.

  227. But sometimes God is trying to teach us something

  228. and we don't want to listen to him.

  229. Sometimes God is knocking at our door

  230. and we are not answering.

  231. And sometimes God lets us experience some of the consequences of our own sin.

  232. He gives us over

  233. to the idols that we have worshipped.

  234. He gives us over to the masters of our own making

  235. and the result is not pretty.

  236. Our sin can get us into a whole lot of trouble.

  237. Sometimes we need to get real about our sin and its consequences.

  238. We need to get real with ourselves,

  239. with others,

  240. and with God.

  241. That's the first part of this passage.

  242. God confronting the people

  243. with the reality of their sin

  244. and its consequences.

  245. But then,

  246. in the second part of this chapter,

  247. the tone abruptly and unexpectedly changes.

  248. It's no longer God confronting the people with their sin,

  249. but in verses 4 to 9,

  250. we hear the voice of a servant,

  251. a human being,

  252. declaring his faithful obedience.

  253. It's as if you're listening to an orchestra

  254. and you hear the crashing cymbals

  255. and blaring horns of God

  256. confronting his guilty people

  257. and suddenly they give way

  258. to the voice of a solo violin,

  259. a haunting but beautiful melody

  260. of faithfulness

  261. in the midst of chaos

  262. and disaster and darkness.

  263. It's a bit like

  264. if you're walking through a neighborhood

  265. with broken windows

  266. and bullet holes

  267. and boarded up houses

  268. and vacant lots

  269. and trash everywhere

  270. and then you come upon a block

  271. where the houses are freshly painted

  272. and the sidewalks are swept clean

  273. and children play freely

  274. in each other's backyards

  275. and neighbors look out for one another.

  276. It's not what you'd expect.

  277. It's an oasis of hope

  278. in the midst of darkness.

  279. So far we've heard God

  280. declaring his people's guilt

  281. but now we hear the voice

  282. of a human being

  283. proclaiming his innocence.

  284. The Lord God has given me

  285. the tongue of those who are taught,

  286. verse 4,

  287. that I may know

  288. how to sustain with a word

  289. him who is weary.

  290. Not only is this servant obedient

  291. but he gives help

  292. and sustaining grace

  293. to people who are weary.

  294. Now you might be wondering

  295. who exactly is speaking

  296. in these verses,

  297. verses 4 to 9.

  298. Now if you read

  299. the book of Isaiah,

  300. in the second part of Isaiah

  301. which is chapters 40 to 55,

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  302. the prophet introduces us

  303. to this figure

  304. who is called

  305. the servant of the Lord.

  306. And the servant

  307. speaks and is spoken about,

  308. the servant speaks

  309. basically four times.

  310. Or there's sort of four passages

  311. that are particularly focused

  312. on this figure

  313. but there's even other references

  314. throughout these chapters.

  315. It's sort of a major emphasis

  316. of these chapters.

  317. And at first it's sort of mysterious,

  318. who is this servant?

  319. The first reference

  320. to the servant

  321. is back in chapter 41,

  322. verse 8.

  323. But you, Israel,

  324. my servant,

  325. Jacob whom I have chosen,

  326. the offspring of Abraham,

  327. my friend,

  328. you whom I took

  329. from the ends of the earth

  330. and called from its farthest corners

  331. saying to you,

  332. you are my servant,

  333. I have chosen you

  334. and not cast you off.

  335. So at first,

  336. it seems like

  337. the people of Israel

  338. as a whole

  339. they are

  340. the servant of the Lord.

  341. So the figure of the servant

  342. represents the whole people.

  343. But then here's the problem.

  344. Throughout these chapters,

  345. not only in chapter 50,

  346. verses 1 through 3,

  347. but in several other places,

  348. Isaiah,

  349. he castigates the people.

  350. He says,

  351. you failed to live up

  352. to your calling

  353. to be the servant of God.

  354. You've turned to idols.

  355. You've been unfaithful.

  356. You're in all this trouble

  357. because you've transgressed

  358. God's covenant.

  359. You've seriously violated,

  360. you've messed it all up.

  361. Now, other people say

  362. Isaiah was speaking

  363. about himself

  364. as God's servant.

  365. Especially if you read here

  366. in chapter 50.

  367. The servant,

  368. one who listens to God,

  369. who speaks for God,

  370. perhaps that could be true

  371. of Isaiah.

  372. But chapter 50,

  373. verse 5,

  374. the servant says,

  375. I was not rebellious.

  376. I turned not backward.

  377. Now, if you go back

  378. to the beginning of Isaiah

  379. in chapter 6,

  380. Isaiah has a vision

  381. of the Lord.

  382. And you know what he says

  383. when he sees the Lord

  384. on his holy throne?

  385. He doesn't say,

  386. I have not been rebellious.

  387. He says,

  388. woe is me.

  389. I am ruined.

  390. Because I am a man

  391. of unclean lips

  392. and I live among a people

  393. of unclean lips

  394. and my eyes have seen

  395. the Lord God Almighty.

  396. Isaiah had a very clear sense

  397. that he was not,

  398. that he was in the mess

  399. along with the people.

  400. And yes,

  401. he was speaking for God

  402. and yes,

  403. God had set him apart.

  404. But the servant

  405. can't just be

  406. the people of Israel

  407. even though some of it

  408. applies to them

  409. and the servant

  410. can't just be Isaiah

  411. even though some

  412. of the description

  413. could apply to Isaiah.

  414. Beginning in chapter 49,

  415. the figure of the servant

  416. begins to emerge

  417. more and more clearly

  418. where the servant

  419. is both identified

  420. with the people

  421. but also stands out

  422. from the people.

  423. Now, let's look at chapter 50.

  424. As we,

  425. let me put pause

  426. on the question

  427. of who the servant is

  428. and let's look at what 50,

  429. chapter 50,

  430. how chapter 50

  431. describes the servant

  432. and then I'll get back

  433. to who actually

  434. fits the description.

  435. Chapter 50,

  436. verses 4 to 9

  437. basically show us

  438. three things

  439. about this servant.

  440. First,

  441. he obeys.

  442. Verse 4 to 5.

  443. Unlike the people

  444. who were sent into exile

  445. for their iniquities

  446. and transgressions,

  447. this one says,

  448. I was not rebellious.

  449. He's different

  450. from all the rest

  451. of the people.

  452. Unlike the people

  453. whose ears had been closed,

  454. this one says,

  455. verse 5,

  456. the Lord God

  457. has opened my ear.

  458. The servant here is,

  459. you might say,

  460. a model disciple,

  461. excuse me,

  462. of the Lord God himself.

  463. What's a disciple?

  464. A student.

  465. A student who's closely

  466. associated with his master

  467. and who takes into himself

  468. all that his master knows

  469. and then gradually

  470. becomes like his master.

  471. like a student

  472. of a great artist

  473. or who closely observes

  474. his master teacher.

  475. And yet this servant's teacher

  476. is the Lord himself.

  477. So the servant obeys.

  478. He speaks for God

  479. because he listens to God

  480. and he speaks words of hope

  481. and encouragement

  482. to people who are weary.

  483. But second,

  484. the servant not only obeys.

  485. In verse 6,

  486. we see that the servant suffers.

  487. I gave my back

  488. to those who strike

  489. and my cheeks

  490. to those who pull out the beard.

  491. I hid not my face

  492. from disgrace

  493. and spitting.

  494. Rather than being rewarded

  495. for his obedience,

  496. the servant suffers

  497. for his obedience.

  498. And he endures public humiliation

  499. and physical abuse

  500. and he does not run away.

  501. And he does not retaliate.

  502. But in verse 7 to 9,

  503. we see the third thing.

  504. The servant obeys,

  505. the servant suffers,

  506. and the servant triumphs.

  507. He can stand up in court

  508. confident of his innocence.

  509. He can withstand public humiliation,

  510. confident that one day

  511. he will be vindicated

  512. and he can challenge

  513. his adversaries

  514. because he knows,

  515. as he says

  516. in verse 7 and verse 9,

  517. the Lord God helps me.

  518. Who is this servant

  519. who obeys

  520. and suffers

  521. and triumphs?

  522. In all of human history,

  523. there's only one person

  524. who completely fulfills

  525. the whole description.

  526. And that is Jesus Christ.

  527. He obeyed.

  528. Morning by morning,

  529. Jesus listened

  530. to the voice of his father.

  531. He would often rise early

  532. and go to solitary places

  533. to pray

  534. and be alone with God.

  535. And day by day,

  536. he sustained

  537. the weary with his word.

  538. People hung on his words.

  539. Not just because he was intelligent,

  540. but because his words fed them.

  541. Because people found life

  542. in his words.

  543. And because he spoke

  544. with authority.

  545. His words carried weight.

  546. And his words made a difference.

  547. But he not only obeyed,

  548. he also suffered.

  549. He set his face

  550. like flint

  551. with resolute determination

  552. to go to Jerusalem.

  553. Despite knowing

  554. that opposition

  555. awaited him there,

  556. when he arrived,

  557. he was betrayed,

  558. he was falsely accused,

  559. he was arrested,

  560. and he was condemned to die.

  561. You know,

  562. if you think of it,

  563. almost every other

  564. religious leader

  565. in the world

  566. lived a long life

  567. and their life

  568. ended in honor

  569. and victory.

  570. They were recognized

  571. by their followers.

  572. they were praised

  573. by others.

  574. And they lived

  575. a long life.

  576. Only Jesus died

  577. at the young age

  578. of 33

  579. in humiliation.

  580. Strung up

  581. on a cross.

  582. Executed

  583. as a criminal.

  584. And before he was killed,

  585. he was publicly mocked,

  586. beaten,

  587. spat upon,

  588. struck on the head.

  589. Sometimes the

  590. humiliation

  591. is even worse

  592. than the pain.

  593. And yet,

  594. through it all,

  595. he triumphed.

  596. Like this servant,

  597. when he stood

  598. before his accusers,

  599. he calmly

  600. and confidently

  601. maintained his innocence.

  602. When he hung

  603. on the cross

  604. and took his last breath,

  605. he cried out

  606. in a loud voice,

  607. it is finished.

  608. And three days later,

  609. his followers testified

  610. that God raised him

  611. from the dead.

  612. And the world

  613. has never been the same

  614. ever since.

  615. Jesus obeyed,

  616. Jesus suffered,

  617. and finally,

  618. Jesus triumphed.

  619. You know,

  620. maybe you're here,

  621. maybe you're not a Christian.

  622. Maybe you're just

  623. visiting today.

  624. Let me challenge you.

  625. What do you make

  626. of a passage

  627. like this?

  628. Isaiah wrote

  629. these words

  630. hundreds of years

  631. before Jesus lived.

  632. We have manuscripts

  633. of the book of Isaiah

  634. from the Dead Sea Scrolls,

  635. from 100 or 200 years

  636. before the birth of Jesus.

  637. These words

  638. were not doctored up

  639. by Christians

  640. after the fact.

  641. And if this passage

  642. by itself

  643. is not compelling,

  644. go on to chapter 53.

  645. The climax

  646. of the servant songs,

  647. which describes

  648. the servant's suffering

  649. in even greater detail.

  650. Here's some of what

  651. chapter 53 says.

  652. He was despised

  653. and rejected

  654. by men.

  655. A man of sorrows

  656. and acquainted

  657. with grief.

  658. As one from whom

  659. men hide their faces,

  660. he was despised

  661. and we esteemed

  662. him not.

  663. Surely he has

  664. borne our griefs

  665. and carried

  666. our sorrows.

  667. Yet we esteemed

  668. him stricken,

  669. smitten by God

  670. and afflicted,

  671. but he was pierced

  672. for our transgressions.

  673. He was crushed

  674. for our iniquities.

  675. Upon him was

  676. the chastisement

  677. that brought us peace

  678. and by his wounds

  679. we are healed.

  680. All we like sheep

  681. have gone astray.

  682. We have turned

  683. everyone to his own way.

  684. And the Lord

  685. has laid on him

  686. the iniquity of us all.

  687. He was oppressed,

  688. he was afflicted,

  689. yet he opened

  690. not his mouth

  691. like a lamb

  692. that is led

  693. to the slaughter

  694. and like a sheep

  695. that before its shearers

  696. is silent,

  697. so he opened

  698. not his mouth.

  699. By oppression

  700. and judgment

  701. he was taken away.

  702. And as for his generation,

  703. who considered

  704. that he was cut off

  705. out of the land

  706. of the living,

  707. stricken for the transgression

  708. of my people,

  709. and they made his grave

  710. with the wicked

  711. and with a rich man

  712. in his death,

  713. although he had done

  714. no violence

  715. and there was no deceit

  716. in his mouth.

  717. Yet it was the will

  718. of the Lord

  719. to crush him.

  720. He has put him

  721. to grief.

  722. When his soul

  723. makes an offering

  724. for guilt,

  725. he shall see

  726. his offspring,

  727. he shall prolong

  728. his days.

  729. The will of the Lord

  730. shall prosper

  731. in his hand.

  732. Out of the anguish

  733. of his soul

  734. he shall see

  735. and be satisfied.

  736. By his knowledge

  737. shall the righteous one,

  738. my servant,

  739. make many

  740. to be accounted righteous

  741. and he shall bear

  742. their iniquities.

  743. How does a man

  744. living hundreds of years

  745. before Jesus

  746. in a society

  747. where crucifixion

  748. had not even

  749. been invented yet,

  750. how does he describe

  751. Jesus' crucifixion

  752. and its meaning

  753. so powerfully

  754. and poetically?

  755. Some people might

  756. want to dismiss

  757. these passages

  758. as mere coincidence

  759. or Christians

  760. seeing whatever

  761. they want to see

  762. in the Old Testament

  763. but I think that's

  764. a very superficial judgment.

  765. The more I read

  766. these passages,

  767. the more compelling

  768. I find them.

  769. they're uncanny,

  770. strange,

  771. mysterious,

  772. eerie

  773. and yet real

  774. and powerful messages

  775. from God himself

  776. that point

  777. to his ultimate work

  778. in the person

  779. of his son Jesus.

  780. What do you make

  781. of passages like these?

  782. For those of us

  783. who are Christians

  784. let me say

  785. two additional things.

  786. And if you're not

  787. a Christian

  788. these are really

  789. about the meaning

  790. of these passages

  791. and the difference

  792. they make.

  793. First,

  794. the way this passage

  795. speaks about

  796. the servant's suffering,

  797. the servant suffers

  798. and triumphs

  799. all alone.

  800. One of the commentators,

  801. John Oswalt,

  802. who I found very helpful

  803. in Isaiah,

  804. says one aspect

  805. of what is being said here

  806. that should not be overlooked

  807. is this,

  808. the aloneness of God

  809. in the work of redemption.

  810. What do I mean by that?

  811. Read through verses four to nine

  812. and notice all the pronouns.

  813. They're all first person singular.

  814. I,

  815. me.

  816. Now many times

  817. you can read

  818. lots of passages

  819. in Isaiah

  820. and the prophets

  821. like to go back and forth.

  822. I,

  823. we,

  824. he,

  825. they,

  826. singular you,

  827. plural you.

  828. That doesn't even come through

  829. in the English

  830. but sometimes there's a note

  831. that makes you see that.

  832. But here it's

  833. one lone individual

  834. speaking.

  835. The suffering,

  836. the obedience,

  837. the suffering

  838. and the triumph

  839. is the accomplishment

  840. of one person

  841. who did it

  842. without the help

  843. of any other

  844. human being.

  845. With only

  846. the help

  847. of the Lord

  848. God.

  849. The servant

  850. accomplished,

  851. in other words,

  852. the servant

  853. accomplishes something

  854. that nobody else

  855. can

  856. and nobody else

  857. will do.

  858. All right,

  859. if you go back

  860. to verse 2,

  861. God says,

  862. why when I came?

  863. Why when I came

  864. knocking at your door

  865. did no one answer?

  866. Only one answered

  867. with perfectly

  868. faithful obedience,

  869. this servant.

  870. Chapter 59,

  871. verse 16,

  872. Isaiah picks up

  873. this same theme.

  874. He says,

  875. the Lord saw

  876. that there was no man

  877. and he wondered

  878. that there was no one

  879. to intercede.

  880. There was no one

  881. to stand in the gap

  882. between God

  883. and his people.

  884. So,

  885. his own arm

  886. brought him salvation

  887. and his righteousness

  888. upheld him.

  889. And chapter 53

  890. speaks of the servant

  891. as the arm

  892. of the Lord.

  893. The power

  894. of the Lord

  895. himself

  896. in this

  897. human being.

  898. Working

  899. deliverance.

  900. Working

  901. salvation.

  902. You see,

  903. when God decided

  904. to redeem his people,

  905. he sent his one

  906. and only son

  907. to do the work

  908. that nobody else

  909. could

  910. and nobody else

  911. would do.

  912. To bear our sins

  913. on the cross

  914. and to triumph

  915. over them

  916. in his resurrection.

  917. That's why

  918. Christians call it

  919. the finished

  920. work

  921. of Christ.

  922. He did it

  923. without our help

  924. and he doesn't

  925. need you

  926. to add

  927. something on

  928. to his saving

  929. work either.

  930. You can't.

  931. Because it's

  932. complete.

  933. He accomplished

  934. the work

  935. of redemption

  936. alone

  937. so that we

  938. might enjoy

  939. the fruits

  940. of his labor

  941. with him.

  942. Second,

  943. Jesus knows

  944. how to sustain

  945. the weary

  946. with his word.

  947. Just as the servant

  948. does in verse 4.

  949. Jesus has a word

  950. to sustain you

  951. today

  952. if you are

  953. wearied

  954. by your troubles.

  955. A bruised

  956. reed

  957. he will not

  958. break

  959. and a smoldering

  960. wick

  961. he will not

  962. snuff out.

  963. Matthew says

  964. when Jesus

  965. saw the crowds

  966. he had compassion

  967. for them

  968. because they

  969. were harassed

  970. and helpless

  971. like sheep

  972. without a shepherd.

  973. Jesus has

  974. compassion

  975. compassion

  976. for those

  977. who are

  978. weary

  979. and troubled.

  980. And Jesus

  981. said to his

  982. disciples

  983. do not

  984. fear

  985. those

  986. who

  987. can

  988. kill

  989. the

  990. body

  991. but

  992. cannot

  993. kill

  994. the soul.

  995. Rather

  996. fear God

  997. who can

  998. destroy

  999. both soul

  1000. and body

  1001. in hell.

  1002. Are not

  1003. two sparrows

  1004. sold for a

  1005. penny

  1006. and not

  1007. one of them

  1008. will fall

  1009. to the ground

  1010. apart from

  1011. your father?

  1012. But even

  1013. the hairs

  1014. of your

  1015. head

  1016. are all

  1017. numbered

  1018. therefore

  1019. fear

  1020. not.

  1021. You

  1022. are of

  1023. more

  1024. value

  1025. than

  1026. many

  1027. sparrows.

  1028. Jesus

  1029. has a

  1030. word to

  1031. sustain

  1032. you

  1033. today

  1034. if you

  1035. are

  1036. wearied

  1037. by your

  1038. troubles.

  1039. And Jesus

  1040. has a

  1041. word to

  1042. sustain

  1043. you

  1044. today

  1045. if you

  1046. are

  1047. wearied

  1048. by

  1049. your

  1050. sins.

  1051. I

  1052. am

  1053. the

  1054. Lord

  1055. and

  1056. besides

  1057. me

  1058. there

  1059. is

  1060. no

  1061. savior.

  1062. I

  1063. am

  1064. he

  1065. who

  1066. blots

  1067. out

  1068. your

  1069. transgressions

  1070. for my

  1071. own

  1072. sake

  1073. and

  1074. I

  1075. will

  1076. not

  1077. remember

  1078. your

  1079. sins.

  1080. Return

  1081. to

  1082. me

  1083. for

  1084. I

  1085. have

  1086. redeemed

  1087. you.

  1088. Jesus

  1089. said

  1090. come

  1091. to

  1092. me

  1093. all

  1094. who

  1095. are

  1096. weary

  1097. and

  1098. burdened

  1099. and

  1100. I

  1101. will

  1102. give

  1103. you

  1104. rest.

  1105. Jesus

  1106. also

  1107. has a

  1108. word

  1109. to

  1110. sustain

  1111. you

  1112. today

  1113. if

  1114. you

  1115. have

  1116. become

  1117. weary

  1118. in

  1119. doing

  1120. good

  1121. for

  1122. his

  1123. name's

  1124. sake.

  1125. He

  1126. says

  1127. take

  1128. my

  1129. yoke

  1130. upon

  1131. you.

  1132. Learn

  1133. from

  1134. me.

  1135. I

  1136. am

  1137. gentle

  1138. and

  1139. lowly

  1140. in

  1141. heart

  1142. and

  1143. you

  1144. will

  1145. find

  1146. rest

  1147. for

  1148. your

  1149. souls

  1150. for

  1151. my

  1152. yoke

  1153. is

  1154. easy

  1155. and

  1156. my

  1157. burden

  1158. is

  1159. light.

  1160. Jesus

  1161. knows

  1162. how to

  1163. sustain

  1164. the

  1165. weary

  1166. with

  1167. his

  1168. word.

  1169. And

  1170. if you're

  1171. weary

  1172. today

  1173. he

  1174. has

  1175. a

  1176. word

  1177. for

  1178. you.

  1179. Finally

  1180. that

  1181. brings

  1182. us

  1183. to

  1184. our

  1185. third

  1186. point

  1187. we've

  1188. seen

  1189. the

  1190. people

  1191. sin

  1192. we've

  1193. seen

  1194. the

  1195. servants

  1196. obedience

  1197. and

  1198. finally

  1199. we

  1200. see

  1201. our

  1202. hope

  1203. when

  1204. we're

  1205. walking

  1206. in

  1207. the

  1208. darkness

  1209. verse

  1210. 10

  1211. and

  1212. 11

  1213. when

  1214. we

  1215. feel

  1216. like

  1217. we're

  1218. walking

  1219. in

  1220. the

  1221. darkness

  1222. verses

  1223. 10

  1224. and

  1225. 11

  1226. say

  1227. that

  1228. we

  1229. basically

  1230. have

  1231. two

  1232. options

  1233. verse

  1234. 10

  1235. says

  1236. that

  1237. we

  1238. can

  1239. trust

  1240. God's

  1241. character

  1242. even

  1243. though

  1244. we

  1245. might

  1246. not

  1247. understand

  1248. his

  1249. ways

  1250. and

  1251. verse

  1252. 11

  1253. says

  1254. we

  1255. can

  1256. instead

  1257. of

  1258. doing

  1259. that

  1260. attempt

  1261. to

  1262. create

  1263. our

  1264. own

  1265. light

  1266. that

  1267. will

  1268. save

  1269. us

  1270. from

  1271. the

  1272. darkness

  1273. that

  1274. we're

  1275. in

  1276. in

  1277. verse

  1278. 10

  1279. Isaiah

  1280. paints

  1281. a

  1282. picture

  1283. of

  1284. someone

  1285. who's

  1286. walking

  1287. in

  1288. the

  1289. darkness

  1290. without

  1291. any

  1292. light

  1293. and

  1294. yet

  1295. this

  1296. person

  1297. relies

  1298. on

  1299. God's

  1300. character

  1301. the

  1302. name

  1303. of

  1304. the

  1305. Lord

  1306. that

  1307. is

  1308. God's

  1309. character

  1310. and

  1311. follows

  1312. God's

  1313. word

  1314. obeys

  1315. the

  1316. voice

  1317. of

  1318. his

  1319. servant

  1320. verse

  1321. 11

  1322. is a

  1323. contrast

  1324. picture

  1325. Isaiah

  1326. says

  1327. behold

  1328. all you

  1329. who

  1330. kindle

  1331. a

  1332. fire

  1333. who

  1334. equip

  1335. yourselves

  1336. with

  1337. burning

  1338. torches

  1339. now

  1340. that

  1341. second

  1342. line

  1343. equip

  1344. yourselves

  1345. with

  1346. burning

  1347. torches

  1348. is hard

  1349. to

  1350. translate

  1351. because

  1352. literally

  1353. it

  1354. could

  1355. be

  1356. translated

  1357. who

  1358. gird

  1359. on

  1360. flames

  1361. so

  1362. most

  1363. likely

  1364. I

  1365. think

  1366. the

  1367. picture

  1368. is

  1369. of

  1370. someone

  1371. who

  1372. instead

  1373. of

  1374. walking

  1375. through

  1376. the

  1377. darkness

  1378. without

  1379. any

  1380. light

  1381. lights

  1382. a torch

  1383. and

  1384. straps

  1385. it

  1386. to

  1387. their

  1388. belt

  1389. so

  1390. as

  1391. to

  1392. walk

  1393. by

  1394. the

  1395. light

  1396. of

  1397. their

  1398. fire

  1399. as

  1400. it

  1401. says

  1402. in

  1403. verse

  1404. 11

  1405. and

  1406. to

  1407. keep

  1408. their

  1409. hands

  1410. free

  1411. while

  1412. they're

  1413. walking

  1414. through

  1415. the

  1416. darkness

  1417. now

  1418. the

  1419. problem

  1420. is

  1421. strapping

  1422. a

  1423. flaming

  1424. torch

  1425. to

  1426. your

  1427. belt

  1428. is

  1429. a

  1430. dangerous

  1431. way

  1432. to

  1433. operate

  1434. okay

  1435. Isaiah

  1436. gives

  1437. this

  1438. picture

  1439. because

  1440. he

  1441. says

  1442. you're

  1443. going

  1444. to

  1445. get

  1446. burned

  1447. by

  1448. the

  1449. fire

  1450. you've

  1451. kindled

  1452. if

  1453. you

  1454. refuse

  1455. to

  1456. obey

  1457. the

  1458. voice

  1459. of

  1460. God's

  1461. servant

  1462. if

  1463. you

  1464. refuse

  1465. to

  1466. rely

  1467. on

  1468. God

  1469. and

  1470. instead

  1471. think

  1472. I'm

  1473. going

  1474. to

  1475. light

  1476. my

  1477. own

  1478. fire

  1479. and

  1480. find

  1481. my

  1482. way

  1483. out

  1484. of

  1485. this

  1486. and

  1487. save

  1488. myself

  1489. God

  1490. says

  1491. the

  1492. very

  1493. thing

  1494. you

  1495. think

  1496. will

  1497. save

  1498. you

  1499. will

  1500. burn

  1501. you

  1502. up

  1503. in

  1504. the

  1505. end

  1506. and

  1507. it

  1508. will

  1509. wear

  1510. out

  1511. like

  1512. a

  1513. garment

  1514. that

  1515. gets

  1516. more

  1517. and

  1518. more

  1519. old

  1520. and

  1521. full

  1522. of

  1523. holes

  1524. and

  1525. ruined

  1526. so

  1527. here's

  1528. the

  1529. question

  1530. who

  1531. will

  1532. you

  1533. trust

  1534. when

  1535. you're

  1536. walking

  1537. in

  1538. the

  1539. darkness

  1540. who

  1541. are

  1542. you

  1543. trusting

  1544. or

  1545. what

  1546. are

  1547. you

  1548. trusting

  1549. what

  1550. are

  1551. you

  1552. looking

  1553. to

  1554. bring

  1555. you

  1556. through

  1557. the

  1558. darkness

  1559. to

  1560. give

  1561. you

  1562. hope

  1563. to

  1564. rescue

  1565. you

  1566. to

  1567. go

  1568. with

  1569. you

  1570. who

  1571. will

  1572. you

  1573. trust

  1574. in

  1575. the

  1576. darkness

  1577. of

  1578. your

  1579. trouble

  1580. remember

  1581. that

  1582. the

  1583. servant

  1584. whose

  1585. voice

  1586. you

  1587. are

  1588. called

  1589. to

  1590. obey

  1591. has

  1592. gone

  1593. ahead

  1594. of

  1595. you

  1596. through

  1597. the

  1598. darkness

  1599. you

  1600. are

  1601. not

  1602. blazing

  1603. a

  1604. trail

  1605. on

  1606. a

  1607. lonely

  1608. road

  1609. you

  1610. are

  1611. following

  1612. a

  1613. path

  1614. that

  1615. has

  1616. been

  1617. beaten

  1618. by

  1619. the

  1620. servant

  1621. himself

  1622. he

  1623. has

  1624. obeyed

  1625. and

  1626. he

  1627. suffered

  1628. for

  1629. his

  1630. obedience

  1631. and

  1632. he

  1633. triumphed

  1634. in

  1635. the

  1636. end

  1637. and

  1638. because

  1639. he

  1640. has

  1641. done

  1642. all

  1643. this

  1644. you

  1645. can

  1646. trust

  1647. his

  1648. voice

  1649. you

  1650. can

  1651. trust

  1652. Jesus

  1653. voice

  1654. even

  1655. when

  1656. your

  1657. depression

  1658. won't

  1659. lift

  1660. even

  1661. when

  1662. the

  1663. loneliness

  1664. seems

  1665. unbearable

  1666. even

  1667. when

  1668. the

  1669. pain

  1670. seems

  1671. relentless

  1672. and

  1673. overwhelming

  1674. even

  1675. if the

  1676. future

  1677. seems

  1678. completely

  1679. dark

  1680. and

  1681. from

  1682. a

  1683. worldly

  1684. point

  1685. of

  1686. view

  1687. life

  1688. seems

  1689. no

  1690. longer

  1691. worth

  1692. living

  1693. even

  1694. when

  1695. the

  1696. path

  1697. of

  1698. obedience

  1699. might

  1700. lead

  1701. to

  1702. public

  1703. humiliation

  1704. salvation

  1705. Jesus

  1706. has

  1707. walked

  1708. that

  1709. path

  1710. ahead

  1711. of

  1712. you

  1713. and

  1714. he

  1715. has

  1716. sent

  1717. his

  1718. spirit

  1719. to

  1720. abide

  1721. with

  1722. you

  1723. will

  1724. you

  1725. trust

  1726. him

  1727. in

  1728. the

  1729. darkness

  1730. of

  1731. your

  1732. trouble

  1733. will

  1734. you

  1738. the

  1739. darkness

  1740. of

  1768. minimize

  1769. and

  1773. and

  1775. and

  1777. and

  1778. control

  1779. and

  1780. distract

  1781. and

  1782. attack

  1783. or

  1784. will

  1785. you

  1786. trust

  1787. the

  1788. one

  1789. who

  1790. has

  1791. taken

  1792. all

  1793. your

  1794. sin

  1795. on

  1796. the

  1797. cross

  1798. for

  1799. you

  1800. will

  1801. you

  1802. say

  1803. I

  1804. will

  1805. fix

  1806. up

  1807. my

  1809. first

  1810. and

  1811. then

  1812. come

  1813. to

  1814. Jesus

  1815. later

  1816. but

  1817. if

  1818. you

  1819. say

  1820. that

  1821. you

  1822. will

  1823. never

  1870. what

  1871. is

  1872. true

  1873. of

  2070. nor

  2071. anything

  2072. else

  2073. in all

  2074. creation

  2075. will be able to

  2076. separate us

  2077. from

  2078. from the love

  2079. of God

  2080. in Christ

  2081. Jesus

  2082. our

  2083. Lord

  2084. see if

  2085. you're

  2086. trusting

  2087. that

  2088. servant

  2089. Jesus

  2090. who's

  2091. gone

  2092. ahead

  2093. of

  2094. you

  2095. you

  2096. can

  2097. have

  2098. that

  2099. same

  2100. confidence

  2101. because

  2102. you are

  2103. in him

  2104. and he

  2105. is in

  2106. you

  2107. and he

  2108. has

  2109. promised

  2110. never

  2111. to

  2112. leave

  2113. you

  2114. and

  2115. never

  2116. to

  2117. forsake

  2118. you

  2119. even

  2120. when

  2121. you

  2122. are

  2123. walking

  2124. through

  2125. the

  2126. darkness

  2127. and

  2128. there

  2129. seems

  2130. to

  2131. be

  2132. no

  2133. light

  2134. at

  2135. all

  2136. you

  2137. can

  2138. trust

  2139. his

  2140. words

  2141. because

  2142. he's

  2143. gone

  2144. ahead

  2145. of

  2146. us

  2147. there

  2148. is

  2149. no

  2150. darkness

  2151. that

  2152. he

  2153. has

  2154. not

  2155. walked

  2156. through

  2157. he

  2158. came

  2159. to

  2160. fill

  2161. the

  2162. darkness

  2163. with

  2164. his

  2165. presence

  2166. that's

  2167. what

  2168. we

  2169. celebrate

  2170. at

  2171. Christmas

  2172. that

  2173. Jesus

  2174. Christ

  2175. came

  2176. into

  2177. a

  2178. dark

  2179. world

  2180. yeah

  2181. you

  2182. might

  2183. have

  2184. been

  2185. wondering

  2186. where

  2187. does

  2188. this

  2189. get

  2190. to

  2191. Christmas

  2192. but

  2193. but

  2194. that's

  2195. what

  2196. we

  2197. celebrate

  2198. the

  2199. people

  2200. walking

  2201. in

  2202. darkness

  2203. have

  2204. seen

  2205. a

  2206. great

  2207. light

  2208. Jesus

  2209. comes

  2210. to

  2211. meet

  2212. us

  2213. in

  2214. our

  2215. darkness

  2216. in

  2217. our

  2218. trouble

  2219. in

  2220. our

  2221. sin

  2222. in

  2223. all

  2224. the

  2225. mess

  2226. we've

  2227. made

  2228. of

  2229. ourselves

  2230. and

  2231. of

  2232. the

  2233. world

  2234. and

  2235. he

  2236. comes

  2237. to

  2238. lead

  2239. us

  2240. onward

  2241. and

  2242. lead

  2243. us

  2244. to

  2245. glory

  2246. trust

  2247. him

  2248. today

  2249. let's

  2250. pray

  2251. father

  2252. father

  2253. we

  2254. thank you

  2255. for the

  2256. faithfulness

  2257. of

  2258. Jesus

  2259. your

  2260. son

  2261. we

  2262. thank you

  2263. for

  2264. your

  2265. words

  2266. we

  2267. thank you

  2268. that you

  2269. do not

  2270. hesitate

  2271. to

  2272. speak

  2273. the

  2274. truth

  2275. to

  2276. us

  2277. about

  2278. our

  2279. situation

  2280. because

  2281. you

  2282. don't

  2283. want

  2284. us

  2285. to

  2286. live

  2287. in

  2288. illusions

  2289. but

  2290. we

  2291. thank

  2292. you

  2293. lord

  2294. that

  2295. with

  2296. that

  2297. word

  2298. of

  2299. confrontation

  2300. and

  2301. truth

  2302. we

  2303. thank

  2304. you

  2305. that

  2306. you

  2307. have

  2308. also

  2309. given

  2310. us

  2311. a

  2312. word

  2313. of

  2314. mercy

  2315. and

  2316. hope

  2317. we

  2318. thank

  2319. you

  2320. for

  2321. Jesus

  2322. and

  2323. his

  2324. obedience

  2325. his

  2326. suffering

  2327. and

  2328. his

  2329. triumph

  2330. we

  2331. pray

  2332. that

  2333. you

  2334. would

  2335. strengthen

  2336. us

  2337. to

  2338. trust

  2339. and

  2340. rely

  2341. on

  2342. him

  2343. and

  2344. walk

  2345. with

  2346. him

  2347. on

  2348. all

  2349. the

  2350. paths

  2351. that

  2352. you

  2353. lead

  2354. us

  2355. pray

  2356. these

  2357. things

  2358. in

  2359. Jesus

  2360. name

  2361. amen

  2362. well

  2363. this

  2364. morning

  2365. we

  2366. have

  2367. the

  2368. joy

  2369. of

  2370. celebrating

  2371. baptism

  2372. Jesus

  2373. told

  2374. his

  2375. disciples

  2376. to

  2377. go

  2378. into

  2379. all

  2380. the

  2381. world

  2382. to

  2383. make

  2384. disciples

  2385. of

  2386. all

  2387. nations

  2388. baptizing

  2389. them

  2390. in

  2391. the

  2392. name

  2393. of

  2394. the

  2395. father

  2396. and

  2397. the

  2398. son

  2399. and

  2400. the

  2401. holy

  2402. spirit

  2403. and

  2404. so

  2405. we're

  2406. just

  2407. doing

  2408. what

  2409. Jesus

  2410. told

  2411. his

  2412. followers

  2413. to

  2414. do

  2415. and

  2416. what

  2417. the

  2418. church

  2419. has

  2420. done

  2421. throughout

  2422. the

  2423. ages

  2424. baptism

  2425. is

  2426. an

  2427. outward

  2428. sign

  2429. of

  2430. an

  2431. inward

  2432. reality

  2433. that

  2434. Jesus

  2435. has

  2436. cleansed

  2437. us

  2438. from

  2439. our

  2440. sin

  2441. that

  2442. he

  2443. has

  2444. set

  2445. us

  2446. apart

  2447. to

  2448. belong

  2449. to

  2450. him

  2451. and

  2452. filled

  2453. to

  2454. God

  2455. by

  2456. his

  2457. grace

  2458. and

  2459. he

  2460. promises

  2461. never

  2462. to

  2463. leave

  2464. us

  2465. nor

  2466. forsake

  2467. us

  2468. so

  2469. baptism

  2470. is

  2471. a

  2472. sign

  2473. and

  2474. a

  2475. seal

  2476. of

  2477. God's

  2478. promises

  2479. to

  2480. us

  2481. and

  2482. this

  2483. morning

  2484. Sam

  2485. Stevens

  2486. is

  2487. going

  2488. to

  2489. be

  2490. baptized

  2491. so

  2492. Sam

  2493. if

  2494. you

  2495. would

  2496. come

  2497. to

  2498. the

  2499. front

  2500. here

  2501. if

  2502. you've

  2503. been

  2504. baptized

  2505. consider

  2506. this

  2507. a

  2508. reminder

  2509. of

  2510. your

  2511. own

  2512. baptism

  2513. of

  2514. God's

  2515. promises

  2516. to

  2517. you

  2518. and

  2519. yours

  2520. to

  2521. him

  2522. if

  2523. you

  2524. haven't

  2525. been

  2526. baptized

  2527. consider

  2528. this

  2529. an

  2530. invitation

  2531. first

  2532. to

  2533. trust

  2534. in

  2535. Jesus

  2536. and

  2537. second

  2538. to

  2539. be

  2540. baptized

  2541. if

  2542. you

  2543. haven't

  2544. already

  2545. so

  2546. for

  2547. anyone

  2548. who's

  2549. being

  2550. baptized

  2551. we

  2552. give

  2553. them

  2554. an

  2555. opportunity

  2556. to

  2557. share

  2558. how

  2559. God

  2560. has

  2561. worked

  2562. in

  2563. their

  2564. lives

  2565. and

  2566. brought

  2567. them

  2568. to

  2569. this

  2570. day

  2571. so

  2572. Sam

  2573. go

  2574. right

  2575. ahead

  2576. good

  2577. morning

  2578. I'm

  2579. Sam

  2580. Stevens

  2581. I'm

  2582. 12

  2583. years

  2584. old

  2585. and

  2586. I

  2587. started

  2588. going

  2589. to

  2590. Trinity

  2591. about

  2592. four

  2593. years

  2594. ago

  2595. I

  2596. was

  2597. born

  2598. and

  2599. raised

  2600. into

  2601. a

  2602. Christian

  2603. family

  2604. and

  2605. I'm

  2606. pretty

  2607. familiar

  2608. with

  2609. Christianity

  2610. but

  2611. I

  2612. just

  2613. haven't

  2614. really

  2615. understood

  2616. what

  2617. it

  2618. is

  2619. until

  2620. now

  2621. and

  2622. so

  2623. during

  2624. our

  2625. Sunday

  2626. school

  2627. classes

  2628. at

  2629. Trinity

  2630. when

  2631. I

  2632. was

  2633. younger

  2634. I

  2635. was

  2636. always

  2637. taught

  2638. that

  2639. Jesus

  2640. loved

  2641. me

  2642. and

  2643. that

  2644. he

  2645. gave

  2646. up

  2647. his

  2648. life

  2649. for

  2650. me

  2651. and

  2652. that

  2653. he

  2654. was

  2655. resurrected

  2656. from

  2657. the

  2658. dead

  2659. but

  2660. I

  2661. never

  2662. really

  2663. understood

  2664. exactly

  2665. why

  2666. that

  2667. was

  2668. so

  2669. special

  2670. when

  2671. I

  2672. started

  2673. middle

  2674. school

  2675. I

  2676. was

  2677. put

  2678. into

  2679. a

  2680. new

  2681. Sunday

  2682. school

  2683. class

  2684. where

  2685. we

  2686. studied

  2687. a

  2688. book

  2689. called

  2690. the

  2691. New

  2692. City

  2693. Catechism

  2694. my

  2695. teachers

  2696. Josh

  2697. Chang

  2698. and

  2699. Amy

  2700. Bush

  2701. would

  2702. talk

  2703. to

  2704. us

  2705. a

  2706. little

  2707. bit

  2708. and

  2709. ask

  2710. us

  2711. a

  2712. question

  2713. from

  2714. the

  2715. book

  2716. and

  2717. we

  2718. would

  2719. learn

  2720. a

  2721. little

  2722. bit

  2723. more

  2724. in

  2725. depth

  2726. about

  2727. God

  2728. and

  2729. what

  2730. he

  2731. did

  2732. questions

  2733. and

  2734. answers

  2735. helped

  2736. me

  2737. get a

  2738. better

  2739. understanding

  2740. of

  2741. why

  2742. Jesus'

  2743. death

  2744. was

  2745. so

  2746. special

  2747. as

  2748. he

  2749. was

  2750. perfect

  2751. and

  2752. we

  2753. were

  2754. horrible

  2755. sinners

  2756. that

  2757. didn't

  2758. deserve

  2759. to

  2760. be

  2761. saved

  2762. by

  2763. his

  2764. sacrifice

  2765. last

  2766. year

  2767. I

  2768. also

  2769. started

  2770. going

  2771. to

  2772. youth

  2773. group

  2774. on

  2775. Wednesdays

  2776. as

  2777. well

  2778. as

  2779. going

  2780. to

  2781. Sunday

  2782. school

  2783. it

  2784. was

  2785. here

  2786. that

  2787. I

  2788. learned

  2789. just

  2790. how

  2791. sinful

  2792. I

  2793. really

  2794. am

  2795. as

  2796. we

  2797. read

  2798. the

  2799. books

  2800. of

  2801. the

  2802. Bible

  2803. telling

  2804. me

  2805. that

  2806. basically

  2807. things

  2808. I

  2809. do

  2810. all

  2811. the

  2812. time

  2813. are

  2814. sins

  2815. my

  2816. sister's

  2817. baptism

  2818. I

  2819. finally

  2820. found

  2821. out

  2822. what

  2823. baptism

  2824. symbolizes

  2825. and

  2826. I

  2827. wanted

  2828. to

  2829. be

  2830. baptized

  2831. as

  2832. well

  2833. I'm

  2834. very

  2835. excited

  2836. that

  2837. today

  2838. is

  2839. finally

  2840. the day

  2841. I

  2842. get to

  2843. publicly

  2844. profess

  2845. my

  2846. faith

  2847. in

  2848. Christ

  2849. and

  2850. get

  2851. baptized

  2852. thank

  2853. you

  2854. I

  2855. need

  2856. to

  2857. ask

  2858. you

  2859. a

  2860. couple

  2861. questions

  2862. thank

  2863. you

  2864. Sam

  2865. we

  2866. always

  2867. ask

  2868. a

  2869. couple

  2870. of

  2871. questions

  2872. to

  2873. people

  2874. who

  2875. are

  2876. being
