  1. Our sermon text today is found in Isaiah chapter 61.

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  2. That's page 581 in the Pew Bible, if you want to turn there with me.

  3. This morning we're going to look at the first four verses of Isaiah chapter 61.

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  4. Let me pray as we come to God's Word together.

  5. Father, long ago, at many times and in many ways, you spoke to your people by the prophets.

  6. But in these last days, you've spoken to us by your Son, our Lord Jesus.

  7. Father, we pray in the next few moments you would help us by your Spirit to hear again

  8. through your written Word, the voice of your incarnate Word, Jesus,

  9. so that we might know you better and love you more

  10. and find our deepest joy and purpose in you just as you created us to.

  11. We ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

  12. So Isaiah chapter 61, verses 1 through 4.

    Isaiah 61:1–4

  13. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.

  14. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

  15. to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound,

  16. to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God,

  17. to comfort all who mourn,

  18. to grant to those who mourn in Zion to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,

  19. the oil of gladness instead of mourning,

  20. the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit,

  21. that they may be called oaks of righteousness,

  22. the planting of the Lord,

  23. that he may be glorified.

  24. They shall build up the ancient ruins.

  25. They shall raise up the former devastations.

  26. They shall repair the ruined cities,

  27. the devastations of many generations.

  28. Well, waiting can be really hard, can't it?

  29. If you're like me,

  30. whenever you're in a situation where you have to wait,

  31. wait for a ride,

  32. wait in line at the store,

  33. wait for a meeting to start,

  34. what's the first thing you do?

  35. Well, you pull out your cell phone, right?

  36. I mean, that's what we do when we wait.

  37. We check our email,

  38. we flip around on a few websites.

  39. We can't just wait.

  40. We have to do something, right?

  41. Waiting is hard work.

  42. Of course, now that Christmas Day has come and gone,

  43. the big wait of the season is finally over.

  44. The presents are opened.

  45. And the family visits have happened.

  46. But you know, Advent is about much more

  47. than just remembering Christ's first coming.

  48. It's also about anticipating Jesus' second coming,

  49. his coming again in glory.

  50. In other words, Advent's about learning how to anticipate,

  51. how to wait.

  52. It's about learning to wait.

  53. And we're not so good at waiting.

  54. What exactly are we supposed to be doing as we wait?

  55. Today we're looking at the last text in our short sermon series in Isaiah

  56. about the messianic prophecies of Isaiah.

  57. And this text that we're looking at today

  58. comes right in the middle of the third and final part of Isaiah's book,

  59. chapters 56 through 66.

  60. Now, very broadly speaking,

  61. chapters 1 through 39 of Isaiah have highlighted the great problem of human sin.

  62. And chapters 40 through 55 have highlighted the even greater answer of God's grace.

  63. And now these last 11 chapters, Isaiah 56 through 66,

  64. are going to tell us what we do while we wait.

  65. While we wait for God's glorious future to come in full.

  66. The glorious future that Jesus,

  67. the King and the servant of Isaiah's book,

  68. has won through his atoning death and his resurrection.

  69. The future that Isaiah will call in these climactic chapters,

  70. he'll call them the new heavens and the new earth.

  71. Where evil and injustice are no more.

  72. Where God's people are radiant with God's glory.

  73. Where death is defeated and joy is everlasting.

  74. That's what's coming, Isaiah says.

  75. That's what we're waiting for.

  76. But Isaiah wants to answer the question of what we do

  77. while we wait for it.

  78. And what we see in Isaiah 61 is that the life God has for us

  79. in this in-between time, in-between Christ's first and second coming,

  80. is so much greater than just standing around

  81. metaphorically checking our cell phones.

  82. Isaiah 61, which is the center and heart of this last section of the book,

  83. brings us face to face with the great mission of the Messiah.

  84. A mission that we enter into when we are united to him and to his people in the world.

  85. Isaiah is saying, this is what it means to wait,

  86. to anticipate the glorious future God has in store.

  87. It means to be on mission with the Messiah,

  88. with King Jesus.

  89. And we're going to look at these four verses and see that this mission has three parts.

  90. First, there's gospel proclamation.

  91. Second, there's personal transformation.

  92. And third, there's communal restoration.

  93. So we see the first part of that mission in verses 1 through 3, the gospel proclamation.

  94. Here in these verses, we have the voice of the Messiah speaking in the first person,

  95. the spirit of the Lord God is upon me,

  96. declaring that the Lord has given him a mission of proclaiming, of bringing good news.

  97. Now, how do we know that this voice in verse 1 is the voice of the Messiah?

  98. Could Isaiah be portraying some other figure here?

  99. Who is it that's speaking in these verses?

  100. But you know, as you look over Isaiah as a whole,

  101. you have to ask who else in Isaiah is said to possess the spirit of the Lord like this?

  102. Back in chapter 11, verse 2, we see that it is the one called the branch of Jesse,

  103. the future king in the line of David, the Messiah himself,

  104. that the spirit of the Lord will rest upon.

  105. And then as we jump ahead to the second part of Isaiah's book,

  106. in chapter 42, verse 1, God says,

  107. Behold my servant whom I uphold, I've put my spirit upon him.

  108. So there it's the great servant of the Lord.

  109. So here, in the third and climactic part of Isaiah's book,

  110. when we hear a voice saying,

  111. The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, who else could it be?

  112. But that same king and that same servant of the Lord

  113. that Isaiah has told us so much about.

  114. Here again, we have the long-awaited Messiah now speaking in his own voice,

  115. declaring that he's been anointed to bring good news.

  116. And notice who this good news is for.

  117. It's good news for the poor,

  118. and for the brokenhearted,

  119. for the captives,

  120. and for all who mourn.

  121. This good news that

  122. the Messiah brings is not for those

  123. who think they have it all together.

  124. It's for those who know they're sick,

  125. who know they're needy,

  126. who know they need to be rescued.

  127. And in the context of Isaiah,

  128. we know that the poor and the brokenhearted

  129. and the captives aren't just mourning their circumstances.

  130. Above all, they're mourning their sin.

  131. One commentator put it this way,

  132. and I thought this was good.

  133. He said,

  134. Who are the poor?

  135. Here in Isaiah,

  136. who's he referring to?

  137. Who are the poor?

  138. Those who are so broken by life

  139. that they have no more heart to try.

  140. Those who are so bound up in their various addictions

  141. that liberty and release

  142. are a cruel mirage.

  143. Those who think that they will never again

  144. experience the favor of the Lord

  145. or see his just vengeance meted out

  146. against those who have misused them.

  147. Those who think their lives hold nothing more

  148. than ashes, sackcloth,

  149. and the fainting heaviness of despair.

  150. They are those to whom the Messiah,

  151. the servant, shouts good news.

  152. But is this message just that?

  153. Is it just words?

  154. Is it mere talk?

  155. But you have to remember who it is

  156. who's speaking these words.

  157. This is the king of Isaiah chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  158. The one called Wonderful Counselor,

  159. Mighty God,

  160. Everlasting Father,

  161. Prince of Peace.

  162. This is the servant of Isaiah 53

  163. who has borne our iniquities.

  164. And will make the many to be counted righteous.

  165. When this king proclaims liberty,

  166. it's not just mere talk.

  167. It's an announcement of what is now true.

  168. After all, when a judge pronounces a verdict,

  169. when the gavel comes down and it says,

  170. not guilty.

  171. Or when a head of state pronounces amnesty

  172. for those who are convicted of crimes.

  173. Is that mere talk?

  174. No.

  175. It produces the reality that the words declare.

  176. And friends,

  177. if the words of a mere human being,

  178. a mere human judge,

  179. a mere human king,

  180. can produce that kind of life-changing reality,

  181. how much more true must it be

  182. of the very words of Christ?

  183. His announcement of liberty

  184. must bring the reality of liberty.

  185. So this is the mission of the Messiah

  186. that Isaiah foresees,

  187. to bring good news.

  188. And when Jesus began his ministry in Nazareth,

  189. it was this very text in Isaiah 61

  190. that he took up and read in the synagogue.

  191. As we read earlier in the service from Luke 4,

  192. Jesus took the scroll of Isaiah,

  193. read these verses,

  194. and then said,

  195. today this scripture has been fulfilled

  196. in your hearing.

  197. Imagine what they must have thought

  198. at such a declaration.

  199. And throughout Jesus' ministry,

  200. he healed the sick

  201. and made paralytics walk again

  202. and opened the eyes of the blind,

  203. even raised the dead,

  204. all to demonstrate this great truth

  205. that he had come to set the captives free.

  206. That the year of the Lord's favor,

  207. grace, and restoration

  208. had arrived in his own person and work.

  209. Here it was.

  210. The thing you've been waiting for.

  211. It's right now.

  212. Of course, as many point out in Luke 4,

  213. Jesus actually stopped reading Isaiah 61

  214. right before the words in verse 2

  215. about the day of vengeance of our God.

  216. Sort of a curious thing.

  217. Why did Jesus stop the reading there?

  218. Well, the reality is,

  219. is that Jesus' work of judgment

  220. was reserved and is reserved

  221. for his second coming,

  222. not his first.

  223. In his first coming,

  224. Jesus had come not to judge,

  225. but to save.

  226. After all,

  227. he didn't want his fellow Israelites

  228. to think that he'd come to judge the Romans,

  229. to start a military war.

  230. That would have been the first thing

  231. they thought of.

  232. He wanted to make very clear

  233. that that's not why he came at first.

  234. He had come to do something much more profound,

  235. to grant a liberty and a comfort

  236. that would be eternal.

  237. Isaiah 61 verse 3

    Isaiah 61:3

  238. gives this beautiful image

  239. of what that would be like.

  240. It says that Jesus has come

  241. to give a beautiful headdress

  242. instead of ashes,

  243. the oil of gladness

  244. instead of mourning,

  245. the garment of praise

  246. instead of a faint spirit.

  247. It's actually wedding imagery,

  248. believe it or not.

  249. It's being decked out

  250. for the day

  251. of a marriage,

  252. of a wedding,

  253. of being united

  254. to the one you love.

  255. And instead of ashes

  256. and mourning

  257. and a faint spirit,

  258. all the things that describe

  259. our hopeless

  260. and hurt

  261. and lost condition

  262. were given in exchange.

  263. Beauty

  264. and joy

  265. and praise.

  266. And how on earth

  267. does Jesus accomplish that?

  268. Something so much greater

  269. and something so much more lasting

  270. than a mere change

  271. of political circumstance.

  272. Well, as we see

  273. as the gospels unfold,

  274. we see that Christ

  275. does this great work

  276. through the cross.

  277. Because it's at the cross

  278. where Jesus takes upon himself

  279. our ashes

  280. and our mourning

  281. and our faint spirit.

  282. He takes all of our sin

  283. and in return

  284. he gives us his beauty

  285. and his gladness

  286. and his praise.

  287. Look at the end of Isaiah chapter 61.

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  288. Look at verse 10.

  289. It says it so well.

  290. Here Isaiah

  291. is now leading us

  292. in a song of praise

  293. for what the Messiah would do.

  294. And in 61 verse 10

  295. he says,

  296. I will greatly rejoice

  297. in the Lord.

  298. My soul shall exult

  299. in my God

  300. for he has clothed me

  301. with the garments

  302. of salvation.

  303. He has covered me

  304. with the robe

  305. of righteousness.

  306. As a bridegroom

  307. decks himself

  308. like a priest

  309. with a beautiful headdress

  310. and as a bride

  311. adorns herself

  312. with her jewels.

  313. What an image.

  314. Taking our sin

  315. upon himself

  316. in return

  317. Jesus gives us

  318. a robe

  319. of righteousness.

  320. Friends,

  321. this is the great exchange

  322. at the heart

  323. of the gospel

  324. for all who believe.

  325. My sin

  326. in exchange

  327. for his righteousness.

  328. that on the cross

  329. he would be clothed

  330. with my moral failures

  331. and bear their penalty away

  332. and in exchange

  333. I would receive

  334. a robe

  335. of his perfect righteousness.

  336. So you see,

  337. Jesus comes

  338. not just

  339. proclaiming good news.

  340. He is the good news.

  341. He can bring good news

  342. because he is it himself.

  343. He is our freedom

  344. and our comfort.

  345. He is our liberty

  346. and our joy.

  347. And this is exactly

  348. what we proclaim

  349. as we enter

  350. into the mission

  351. of the Messiah.

  352. We proclaim

  353. the good news,

  354. the freedom

  355. that Jesus has won.

  356. Freedom from sin's penalty,

  357. freedom from sin's guilt,

  358. freedom from sin's power even.

  359. All accomplished

  360. through Jesus' death

  361. and resurrection

  362. and applied to our hearts

  363. by the Holy Spirit

  364. and faith.

  365. that's why Paul can say

  366. living in light

  367. of Jesus' death

  368. and resurrection,

  369. he can say

  370. I'm not ashamed

  371. of the gospel

  372. for it is

  373. the power of God

  374. for salvation

  375. to everyone who believes.

  376. Notice that Paul

  377. is saying that the gospel,

  378. the message about Jesus,

  379. isn't just about

  380. God's power, right?

  381. He's not even saying

  382. that it conveys God's power.

  383. He's saying that

  384. the gospel

  385. is God's power.

  386. Proclaiming what Jesus

  387. has done in his life

  388. and death and resurrection

  389. that he lived a perfect life

  390. of obedience to God

  391. in our place,

  392. that he died on the cross

  393. to bear sin's penalty

  394. in our place,

  395. that he rose to life

  396. on the third day

  397. conquering death

  398. and securing our salvation,

  399. proclaiming this good news,

  400. this gospel,

  401. is God's power.

  402. Power to comfort

  403. those who mourn

  404. and power to liberate

  405. those who are bound.

  406. So as we think

  407. about our mission,

  408. about joining Christ

  409. in his mission today,

  410. we must be about

  411. the work

  412. of gospel proclamation.

  413. As the new year

  414. is about to begin,

  415. I wonder,

  416. are there two

  417. or three coworkers

  418. or neighbors

  419. or friends

  420. or even family members

  421. whose conversion

  422. you will particularly

  423. pray for this year?

  424. And will you pray

  425. that God will give you

  426. an open door

  427. and well-seasoned,

  428. well-timed words

  429. to invite them

  430. to church,

  431. to speak to them

  432. about the liberty

  433. that Christ has brought us?

  434. Perhaps a good goal

  435. this year

  436. in addition to prayer

  437. and in sharing the gospel

  438. is to read one good book

  439. about personal evangelism

  440. this year.

  441. That is sharing the gospel

  442. in the context

  443. of our friendships.

  444. There are lots

  445. of good ones out there.

  446. One I've been reading lately

  447. is by Max Stiles

  448. called Speaking of Jesus.

  449. It's kind of an oldie

  450. but goodie,

  451. but it's a good one.

  452. Max Stiles,

  453. Speaking of Jesus.

  454. But why not take up

  455. one book

  456. that will help equip you

  457. to be about

  458. this great work

  459. of gospel proclamation?

  460. If you want

  461. some more recommendations,

  462. you can come talk to me

  463. after the service.

  464. But being about

  465. the work of gospel

  466. proclamation

  467. is more than just

  468. about one-to-one

  469. conversations.

  470. It's about creating

  471. a church life,

  472. a loving church culture

  473. where non-Christians

  474. feel welcome

  475. to ask questions

  476. and explore

  477. spiritual things

  478. and learn about

  479. Jesus for themselves.

  480. It's about this place

  481. and this space

  482. being open to those

  483. who are seeking

  484. and being ready

  485. to be patient

  486. with their questions

  487. and with their

  488. searchings

  489. and their explorings

  490. to welcome those things,

  491. to be honest

  492. about our own doubts

  493. and misgivings at times

  494. and our own journey.

  495. So when we gather

  496. on Sundays

  497. or in small groups

  498. or in other settings,

  499. do we assume

  500. that everyone there

  501. is already a Christian

  502. or do we speak and act

  503. as if there are curious

  504. non-Christians

  505. present as well?

  506. All of that

  507. is what it means

  508. to be on the mission

  509. of proclaiming

  510. the good news of Jesus.

  511. But the mission

  512. of the Messiah

  513. doesn't actually

  514. just stop there.

  515. This passage

  516. shows us

  517. that the good news

  518. of Jesus

  519. creates profound change.

  520. The second thing

  521. we see here

  522. is that

  523. this mission

  524. of proclamation

  525. is also a mission

  526. of personal transformation.

  527. We see this

  528. at the end

  529. of verse 3.

  530. This message

  531. of the gospel

  532. goes forth

  533. in these opening verses

  534. with the result

  535. at the end

  536. of verse 3

  537. says that they

  538. may be called

  539. oaks of righteousness,

  540. the planting

  541. of the Lord,

  542. that he,

  543. that is the Lord,

  544. may be glorified.

  545. God's creating

  546. oaks of righteousness.

  547. In the first chapter

  548. of Isaiah,

  549. the people there

  550. were described

  551. as being

  552. like an oak

  553. whose leaf

  554. withers.

  555. In other words,

  556. because of their

  557. self-reliance

  558. and their self-centeredness,

  559. the people had become

  560. spiritually dry

  561. and lifeless

  562. and near to death.

  563. But here in Isaiah 61,

  564. a great transformation

  565. has happened.

  566. how will we go about

  567. living this life

  568. that God wants us to live?

  569. Will it be in our own strength?

  570. Will it be in our own power?

  571. Will we just pull ourselves

  572. up by our bootstraps

  573. and get about the work?

  574. No.

  575. God says,

  576. I'll produce in you

  577. that fruit

  578. that I want to see.

  579. My grace will give you

  580. a new status,

  581. but my grace will give you

  582. a new nature.

  583. And now,

  584. as a result

  585. of the gospel,

  586. the ones

  587. who were once

  588. oaks

  589. with withering leaves

  590. have become

  591. oaks

  592. of righteousness.

  593. Friends,

  594. being in a relationship

  595. with Jesus Christ

  596. really does

  597. change people's lives.

  598. If you've been around

  599. the church

  600. for a long time

  601. and you've seen

  602. a lot of hurt

  603. and brokenness

  604. and struggling,

  605. sometimes you doubt that.

  606. But it's helpful

  607. to take a step back

  608. and see the good

  609. that is produced

  610. by the Holy Spirit

  611. through the gospel

  612. of grace.

  613. Being in a relationship

  614. with Jesus

  615. really does change us

  616. from the inside out.

  617. Think of an oak tree.

  618. A healthy oak tree

  619. is stable,

  620. isn't it?

  621. It withstands

  622. the rains

  623. and the storms

  624. that come.

  625. You know,

  626. with Christ

  627. in your life,

  628. you no longer

  629. need to rely

  630. on the shifting sands

  631. of other people's approval

  632. and you don't have to

  633. ride the roller coaster

  634. of worldly success.

  635. You don't have to live

  636. for the gods of career

  637. or family

  638. or money.

  639. All those things

  640. will come

  641. and go.

  642. But Christ

  643. remains

  644. faithful,

  645. loving,

  646. ever-present,

  647. ever-merciful,

  648. ever-strong.

  649. And being rooted in Him

  650. gives you a stability

  651. like nothing else.

  652. And oak trees

  653. are also fairly permanent,

  654. aren't they?

  655. Apparently,

  656. oak trees can live

  657. and flourish

  658. for hundreds of years.

  659. You know,

  660. we've got an oak tree

  661. in our backyard

  662. and it's stunning

  663. to think that that oak tree

  664. has been there

  665. probably longer

  666. than the house

  667. that I live in.

  668. Most of what we do

  669. in our lives

  670. will probably be forgotten

  671. in a generation or two.

  672. Don't you think

  673. about that sometimes?

  674. But here's the wonderful

  675. good news of the gospel,

  676. that in the Lord Jesus,

  677. our labors

  678. are not in vain.

  679. Because of His resurrection,

  680. even our most mundane

  681. labors

  682. have eternal significance.

  683. And on top of it all,

  684. Christ offers us

  685. eternal life.

  686. In Him,

  687. you will live

  688. forever.

  689. no more

  690. do our lives

  691. need to be haunted

  692. by the fear

  693. of dying

  694. or by the many

  695. lesser fears

  696. that are like it,

  697. those fears

  698. of missing out.

  699. In Christ,

  700. your best

  701. is always still to come,

  702. which gives you

  703. a permanence

  704. like nothing else.

  705. But oak trees

  706. aren't just stable

  707. and permanent,

  708. they're abundant,

  709. aren't they?

  710. Oak trees

  711. can produce

  712. thousands of acorns,

  713. as you know,

  714. if you've ever walked

  715. under an oak tree

  716. after a heavy wind,

  717. right?

  718. We've had so many acorns

  719. in one spot

  720. that you almost

  721. trip on them.

  722. It's like a sheet

  723. of marbles.

  724. You just sort of

  725. go flying.

  726. They're everywhere.

  727. Friends,

  728. that's what happens

  729. when the new life

  730. of Christ

  731. is at work in us.

  732. God starts to do

  733. an abundant

  734. and total work

  735. in our lives.

  736. It changes all of us

  737. from the inside out.

  738. Now,

  739. of course,

  740. sometimes that change

  741. takes time,

  742. right?

  743. I think there's a reason

  744. why God often uses

  745. agricultural

  746. or organic metaphors

  747. to describe our growth

  748. in righteousness,

  749. our growth

  750. in godly character.

  751. Because it takes time

  752. for things to grow.

  753. Mighty oaks

  754. of righteousness

  755. don't just pop up

  756. overnight.

  757. it takes time.

  758. And sometimes

  759. it's hard work.

  760. Farmers need to

  761. get up early

  762. and go to bed late.

  763. I would be a terrible

  764. farmer.

  765. I don't like getting

  766. up early.

  767. So I'm told.

  768. But it can be hard work,

  769. this growth

  770. in righteousness.

  771. But you see,

  772. ultimately,

  773. one of the beautiful

  774. things about the

  775. organic metaphor

  776. isn't just that it

  777. takes time,

  778. isn't just that

  779. sometimes it takes

  780. some hard work,

  781. but ultimately

  782. that it's the Lord's

  783. doing.

  784. There's a confidence

  785. we can have in Christ

  786. that God is going

  787. to produce in us

  788. the righteousness,

  789. the holiness

  790. he desires in us.

  791. Sometimes it will be

  792. a much more painful

  793. process than we

  794. would ever imagine,

  795. but he's going to

  796. finish what he started.

  797. And as a result,

  798. the Lord will get

  799. the glory.

  800. He will make us

  801. more and more

  802. into his image,

  803. and as others

  804. see Christ in us,

  805. Christ will be

  806. praised.

  807. One of the most

  808. important things

  809. that we can do

  810. to share Christ

  811. with our city

  812. and to see the

  813. gospel go forth

  814. is to live lives

  815. of godliness,

  816. friends.

  817. to live

  818. holy lives.

  819. And that is the

  820. mission of the Messiah,

  821. to make us

  822. something new.

  823. It's a mission

  824. of personal

  825. transformation,

  826. of becoming more

  827. and more godly

  828. in our character.

  829. So again,

  830. let me ask,

  831. as a new year

  832. begins,

  833. how will you

  834. cooperate with God

  835. to cultivate

  836. this growth

  837. in your life?

  838. What fruit

  839. of the Spirit

  840. are you longing

  841. to see more of

  842. in the year ahead?

  843. What vices

  844. or sins

  845. are you hoping

  846. to see less of

  847. in the year ahead?

  848. And not just

  849. in your own life,

  850. how do you plan

  851. to cooperate

  852. with God

  853. to cultivate

  854. this growth

  855. in the lives

  856. of those around you?

  857. Perhaps there's

  858. a sin

  859. that you need

  860. to confess,

  861. something that you

  862. need to tell

  863. a trusted Christian

  864. mentor or pastor

  865. so they can pray

  866. for you

  867. and point you

  868. to the right avenues

  869. for help and change.

  870. If there's a deeper

  871. besetting sin

  872. that you're wrestling

  873. with,

  874. perhaps you need

  875. to get connected

  876. with a recovery group,

  877. with an addiction

  878. recovery group

  879. who can help you

  880. walk in the paths

  881. of God's grace

  882. together.

  883. Again,

  884. come talk to the pastors.

  885. Let us help

  886. resource you

  887. into the help

  888. that you need.

  889. Or maybe you just

  890. need to be more

  891. transparent with

  892. your Christian friends

  893. or your spouse

  894. about how you'd like

  895. to grow in Christlikeness.

  896. The work of

  897. personal transformation

  898. is not a solo sport.

  899. We need each other.

  900. We need each other

  901. to help apply

  902. the grace of Christ

  903. to our hearts

  904. and we need each other

  905. to fan into flame

  906. the Spirit's work within.

  907. So how will this year

  908. be a year of personal

  909. transformation for you?

  910. But there's one last

  911. element to this mission.

  912. Do you see the progression

  913. that's happening

  914. in this passage?

  915. We see that the

  916. mission of the Messiah

  917. begins in gospel

  918. proclamation.

  919. It extends to

  920. personal transformation

  921. and then out

  922. in verse 4

  923. into community

  924. restoration.

  925. Look again at verse 4.

  926. They shall build up

  927. the ancient ruins.

  928. They shall raise up

  929. the former devastations.

  930. They shall repair

  931. the ruined cities.

  932. the devastations

  933. of many generations.

  934. Now Isaiah's

  935. immediate audience

  936. was the exile generation.

  937. He was writing ahead

  938. to the generation

  939. that would see

  940. Jerusalem destroyed

  941. and the people

  942. carried off

  943. to captivity.

  944. So this image

  945. of city being rebuilt

  946. would have been

  947. a powerful image

  948. for them

  949. of what renewal

  950. and repair

  951. and new life

  952. looked like.

  953. But notice that

  954. the vision here

  955. encompasses more

  956. than just Jerusalem.

  957. It's all in the plural,

  958. isn't it?

  959. Ruins,

  960. devastations,

  961. cities.

  962. In other words,

  963. what Isaiah has

  964. in view here

  965. is that wherever

  966. sin has brought

  967. its wreckage,

  968. there the gospel

  969. is meant to go

  970. and produce

  971. restoration

  972. and renewal.

  973. Broken marriages,

  974. broken families,

  975. broken churches,

  976. broken workplaces,

  977. broken neighborhoods,

  978. broken cities,

  979. broken regions,

  980. wherever poverty

  981. and racism

  982. and joblessness

  983. and fear

  984. and despair

  985. and addiction

  986. rear their ugly heads,

  987. there the gospel

  988. is meant to go

  989. and bring hope

  990. and repair

  991. to make something

  992. new

  993. out of what's

  994. old,

  995. to make something

  996. whole

  997. out of something

  998. that's been torn.

  999. So you see

  1000. the progression

  1001. in these verses.

  1002. Jesus is the one

  1003. proclaiming

  1004. and the one

  1005. proclaimed

  1006. and when he is

  1007. proclaimed

  1008. and received

  1009. in repentance

  1010. and faith

  1011. there's liberty

  1012. and there's comfort

  1013. and then the gospel

  1014. begins to produce

  1015. personal change

  1016. and those transformed

  1017. by the gospel

  1018. go out

  1019. and do this work

  1020. of rebuilding

  1021. and repairing.

  1022. In other words,

  1023. the gospel changes

  1024. people who then

  1025. go out

  1026. and change the world.

  1027. The church really

  1028. is meant to be

  1029. salt and light

  1030. as Jesus said.

  1031. So friends,

  1032. this new year

  1033. where will you seek

  1034. to build up

  1035. the ancient ruins

  1036. and repair

  1037. the ruined cities?

  1038. How will you use

  1039. the gifts and talents

  1040. God has given you

  1041. to do good

  1042. to your neighbors?

  1043. Both your Christian

  1044. neighbors right here

  1045. in your church family

  1046. and also your

  1047. non-Christian neighbors too.

  1048. One day Christ

  1049. will return

1050. and make all things new.

1051. How can you be at work

  1052. to anticipate

  1053. that great day

  1054. through love

  1055. and service

  1056. and justice today?

  1057. When the King comes,

  1058. friends,

1059. let us not be waiting

  1060. with our hands

  1061. in our pockets.

  1062. merely checking

  1063. our email.

  1064. Let us be about

  1065. the mission

  1066. of the King.

  1067. Christ has rescued us

  1068. for a great purpose

  1069. to join Him

  1070. in this work

  1071. of freedom

  1072. and joy,

  1073. proclaiming liberty

  1074. to the captives,

  1075. living transformed lives,

  1076. seeing the ruins

  1077. become rebuilt

  1078. and restored.

  1079. Lord,

  1080. where will you

  1081. join the mission

  1082. in this coming year?

  1083. What good goals

  1084. will you set

  1085. to be about

  1086. the mission of Christ?

  1087. Friends,

  1088. soon

  1089. our King

  1090. will return in glory.

  1091. How will He

  1092. find you waiting?

  1093. May He find us

  1094. joyfully

  1095. and passionately

  1096. engaged in His mission

1097. and may He say to us

  1098. all on that day,

  1099. well done,

  1100. good and faithful servant.

  1101. Let's pray together.

  1102. Come,

  1103. thou long-expected Jesus,

  1104. born to set

  1105. thy people free.

  1106. O Lord,

  1107. thank you that you've

1108. come to set us free.

  1109. Father,

  1110. I pray this morning

1111. for those who are here

1112. and maybe they're not sure

  1113. about the claims

  1114. of Christianity,

  1115. but they do know

  1116. what it's like

  1117. to be stuck

  1118. and they do know

  1119. what it's like

  1120. to feel like

  1121. they're in captivity.

  1122. O God,

1123. I pray that by your Spirit

  1124. you'd give them

  1125. eyes to see

  1126. the sweet freedom

  1127. of the forgiveness

  1128. of sins

  1129. that's offered in Jesus,

1130. the offer of your Holy Spirit

1131. at work in their lives.

1132. I pray that you would

  1133. open their hearts

  1134. to receive you today.

  1135. And Lord,

  1136. I pray for us

  1137. who have already

  1138. heard that message

  1139. and responded in faith.

  1140. O Lord,

  1141. would you give us

  1142. courage this year

  1143. and boldness this year

1144. to be about the work

  1145. of your mission.

  1146. Lord,

1147. help us to see the ways

  1148. in which our workplaces

  1149. can be avenues

  1150. of rebuilding

  1151. and restoring.

  1152. Give us eyes

  1153. to see areas

  1154. of our hearts

  1155. that need to change.

  1156. Give us eyes

  1157. to see the relationships

  1158. you've providentially

  1159. placed around us

  1160. where gospel proclamation

  1161. can happen.

  1162. And O God,

  1163. give us the confidence

  1164. that you indeed

  1165. are doing this work

  1166. that you will accomplish

  1167. the purposes

  1168. that you have said

  1169. for your great glory.

1170. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  1171. Amen.
