  1. Once again, good morning. We continue in the series on prayer with a topic today, wrestling

  2. in prayer. That's prevailing and persistent prayer. So from the Bible, we're to pray without

  3. season based on the verse 1 Thessalonians 5 verse 17. In Romans 12 verse 12, we're also

    1 Thessalonians 5:17 Romans 12:12

  4. again commanded to persevere in prayer. The text of the verse says, rejoice in hope, be

  5. patient in suffering, and persevere in prayer. Now one will ask, does this refer to the continual

  6. acts of prayer itself? Does that mean we're praying from minute to minute, or does it

  7. refer to the spirit of prayerfulness? Now from Colossians 3 verse 2, we're to set our affections

    Colossians 3:2

  8. on things above and not on things on earth. So linking these two together, I believe they're

  9. intertwined. So we're supposed to have this spirit of prayerfulness and also pray always.

  10. Now, what's the subject of our prayers? Are we to pray for ourselves, our families, or are

  11. we to intercede for others? From Scripture, clearly we're supposed to pray for others.

  12. Turn into Ephesians 1 verse 15 and 17. This is taken from the, I believe, the modern English

    Ephesians 1:15

  13. version. It says, therefore, I also, after hearing of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love

  14. towards all the saints, do not cease giving thanks for you, mention you in my prayers, so that the God of

  15. our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the

  16. knowledge of him. And then again, there's a similar prayer in Colossians 1 verse 9 to 11, where Paul

    Colossians 1:9–11

  17. says, for this reason, we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you and to ask that

  18. you may be filled with the knowledge of his will and all wisdom and spiritual understanding, that you

  19. may walk, that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, pleasing to him, being fruitful in every

  20. good work and increasing in the knowledge of God, strengthened with all might according to his

  21. glorious power, enduring everything with perseverance and patience joyfully. This is a certainly a beautiful

  22. and lovely prayer to pray for all, for all our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  23. Prayer builds us up into the body of Christ. Through prayer, we're able to know the mind of Christ,

  24. and also, we're also able to walk in his will.

  25. From 1 Timothy 2 verse 1, we're also commanded to pray, to lift up our hands, to pray for everyone,

    1 Timothy 2:1

  26. including authorities, kings, rulers, with supplications and thanksgiving. And this is

  27. acceptable and good and pleasing in the sight of God.

  28. Clearly, we can see that we're called not only to pray for our families or ourselves, but we're

  29. supposed to broaden the horizon to pray for our brethren in church, our church, the universal church,

  30. and our nations. So we'll go to the next portion of the session today.

  31. What's Jesus teaching on persistent and prevailing prayer?

  32. So we'll take our text for this portion is Luke 18, 1 to 8.

  33. Okay, and I'll take this from the New King James Version.

  34. So this is the parable of the persistent widow.

  35. Luke 18, verse 1.

    Luke 18:1

  36. Then he spake a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying,

  37. There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God, nor regard man.

  38. Now there was a widow in that city, and she came to him, saying, Get justice for me from my adversary.

  39. And he would not for a while, but afterward he said within himself, Though I do not fear God, nor regard man,

  40. yet because this widow troubles me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

  41. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge said,

  42. And shall not God avenge his own elect, who cry out day and night to him, though he bears long with them?

  43. I tell you that he will avenge them speedily.

  44. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he really find faith on the earth?

  45. Though answers to prayer may seem to be delayed, Jesus highlighted the need to pray always and not to lose heart.

  46. It's easy to lose heart, to become discouraged, when answers to prayer appear to be taken several years, or appear to be delayed.

  47. Believe me, I've personally been in this place often.

  48. However, from the text of the scripture, we can see that the widow's prayer was persistent.

  49. Her request was, Avenge me against my adversary.

  50. And let's see the promise from God from verse 7.

  51. And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto them, though he bear long with them?

  52. From this verse, we can see clearly that the struggle in prayer may be long and very hard.

  53. And in verse 8, there's an interesting question that Jesus poses to his listeners.

  54. He says, nevertheless, when the Son of Man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

  55. Now, Andrew Murray, the 19th century preacher from South Africa, wrote in his book titled,

  56. The Ministry of Intercession, that there can be no true prayer without faith.

  57. From the definition of faith given in the Bible, faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.

  58. So clearly, when we come to God in prayer, we must exercise faith.

  59. For without faith, the Bible says that if we come to the Lord Jesus in prayer without faith,

  60. and we don't believe, we're like one who's tossed on the waves of the sea.

  61. We do not expect to receive anything from God.

  62. So, like the widow in the parable, we must be persistent in prayer.

  63. We must exercise faith.

  64. No delay in prayer must shake our faith.

  65. We can clearly see that unbelief is a barrier to prayer, to answered prayer.

  66. Another barrier to answered prayer, which I like to talk about, is unforgiveness,

  67. bearing grudges, holding things against people.

  68. Now, let's see another promise from the word concerning prayer.

  69. From 1 John 5, verse 14 and 15.

    1 John 5:14

  70. And this is the confidence we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

  71. And if we know he hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the positions that we have desired of him.

  72. So, clearly, once again, we can see that ultimately we must believe and exercise faith in God and his word.

  73. Now, another of Jesus' teachings on prayer can be found in Luke chapter 11, verse 5 to 11.

    Luke 11:5–11

  74. Now, for want of time, I will not read the entire text.

  75. Clearly, from verse 8, we can see that because of the persistence of the individual in question,

  76. he got what he wanted.

  77. Because of his persistence, he will rise and give him as much as he needs.

  78. So, taking this into our context, we can see that from persistence, God will eventually give us what we need.

  79. The key phrase here is, yet, because of his persistence, importunity.

  80. So, clearly, once we are praying and we see that answers may be denied,

  81. that doesn't mean we should give up.

  82. We are mandated to continue praying.

  83. Now, there is the place of fasting in prayer.

  84. Fasting is very important, and this has been touched upon during one of the earlier sessions.

  85. Jesus' life on earth demonstrated the importance of fasting with prayer.

  86. Now, there was a situation where Jesus' disciples could not cast out a demon.

  87. They could not heal one of the individuals with epilepsy.

  88. What did Jesus say here?

  89. So, going to Mark chapter 9, verse 19 and 29, you can see what Jesus,

    Mark 9:19

  90. how Jesus highlighted the importance of fasting.

  91. I'll just read the text briefly.

  92. So, in Mark chapter 9, verse 19,

    Mark 9:19

  93. Jesus said,

  94. So, this is the context.

  95. The disciples had come to Jesus and asked him,

  96. why couldn't we drive out this spirit?

  97. And this was Jesus' answer to them.

  98. He answered and said,

  99. O faithless generation,

  100. how long shall I be with you?

  101. How long shall I bear with you?

  102. Bring him to me.

  103. You can see also from this text that he also spoke about faith.

  104. He perceived the faithlessness of his disciples.

  105. So, skipping to verse 29,

  106. this is Jesus' answer to them after he had driven the demon out.

  107. So, he said to them,

  108. This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.

  109. So, the words of Jesus on this matter,

  110. This kind cannot come out except by prayer and fasting.

  111. Clearly, clearly speaks to us in the sense that

  112. there are some times when we pray,

  113. when we are called to exercise faith and fasting

  114. in order to obtain our answers.

  115. From Scripture, the Old Testament saints fasted.

  116. In the lives of Daniel, David, Nehemiah, Esther,

  117. clearly we can see that they fasted at some point.

  118. Even when we don't see clear answers to problems

  119. or situations that have persisted over years and generations,

  120. we must pray and never give up.

  121. So, we'll go to the third and final portion of the session today.

  122. That's intercessory prayer.

  123. So, we're called to stand in the gap

  124. to intercede on behalf of brethren

  125. as outlined.

  126. And I'll take the text for,

  127. the opening text from Isaiah 59, verse 16.

    Isaiah 59:16

  128. Okay.

  129. He saw that there was no man

  130. and wondered that there was no intercessor.

  131. Therefore, his own arm brought salvation

  132. and his own righteousness.

  133. It sustained him.

  134. So, the previous verses in this chapter

  135. had highlighted the abundance of evil

  136. in Isaiah's day.

  137. There was no justice.

  138. Further verses show a description of God

  139. clothed in his wrath

  140. with the armor of God.

  141. The Lord was astonished that there was no intercessor.

  142. There was no one ready to plead on behalf of the nation.

  143. Again, the prophet Ezekiel

  144. also spoke about intercession.

  145. In Ezekiel 22, verse 30,

    Ezekiel 22:30

  146. this is what the Lord said.

  147. I sought for a man among them

  148. who would build up the hedge

  149. and stand in the gap before me

  150. for the land

  151. so that I would not destroy it.

  152. But I found none.

  153. Now, from Job 1, verse 10,

    Job 1:10

  154. we can clearly see that the hedge

  155. that Ezekiel refers to

  156. refers to spiritual,

  157. divine spiritual protection,

  158. where the devil,

  159. when he went before the Lord,

  160. said,

  161. have you not put a hedge around him?

  162. So, clearly,

  163. Satan could see the divine

  164. spiritual protection

  165. around Job and his family.

  166. Again, Ezekiel talks about the hedge

  167. in Ezekiel 13,

    Ezekiel 13:4

  168. verse 4 and 5.

  169. It says,

  170. O Israel,

  171. you prophets are like foxes

  172. in the ruins.

  173. You have not gone up

  174. into the gaps,

  175. nor did you build up the hedge

  176. for the house of Israel

  177. to stand in battle

  178. on the day of the law.

  179. So, what does intercessory prayer do?

  180. It builds up the hedge

  181. and it fills the gaps

  182. in the war.

  183. It's necessary for parents,

  184. for siblings,

  185. to stand in the gap

  186. for their families

  187. and for our communities

  188. and our nation

  189. to build the hedge

  190. and to stand in the gap.

  191. We must wrestle in prayer

  192. for our families,

  193. for our children,

  194. for we are involved

  195. in a daily,

  196. ongoing spiritual battle

  197. and we do not wrestle

  198. against flesh and blood.

  199. Spiritual warfare

  200. is an extensive area

  201. and it's probably

  202. beyond the scope

  203. of our session,

  204. but I'll just touch

  205. on some highlights

  206. from spiritual warfare.

  207. Now, what does

  208. Paul say we wrestle against?

  209. He says we wrestle

  210. against principalities,

  211. powers,

  212. rulers of darkness

  213. of this world,

  214. against spiritual forces

  215. of evil

  216. in heavenly places.

  217. this conflict.

  218. This conflict involves

  219. every believer

  220. bought by the blood

  221. of the Lord Jesus.

  222. There are sometimes

  223. some problems

  224. and challenges

  225. that are purely

  226. not physical

  227. and to seek

  228. a physical solution

  229. to these problems

  230. will not lead

  231. to any success.

  232. we may have tried

  233. many several approaches

  234. and looked

  235. for various solutions.

  236. However,

  237. from scripture,

  238. we're exhorted

  239. to take up

  240. the armor of God

  241. with prayer.

  242. From Ephesians 6,

    Ephesians 6:18

  243. verse 18,

  244. we must pray

  245. in the spirit

  246. always with all kinds

  247. of prayer

  248. and supplication.

  249. and we're commanded

  250. also to be alert

  251. with all perseverance

  252. and supplication

  253. for all the saints.

  254. So,

  255. we're supposed to pray

  256. for ourselves,

  257. our families,

  258. but then we're also called

  259. to pray for each other.

  260. Practically,

  261. how do we do this?

  262. We're supposed to pray

  263. for the brother

  264. and sister

  265. sitting next to us

  266. at all times.

  267. Now,

  268. I'll talk about

  269. two examples briefly

  270. in want of time

  271. highlighting the conflict.

  272. In Daniel chapter 10,

    Daniel 10 chapter mention

  273. we can see where

  274. Daniel was fasting

  275. and praying

  276. to learn more

  277. about

  278. God's plan

  279. for Israel.

  280. Now,

  281. let's see what

  282. the angel told him

  283. in chapter 3

  284. that

  285. your words were heard

  286. from the first day

  287. you started to pray.

  288. However,

  289. Daniel did not receive

  290. the answer

  291. until after 21 days.

  292. Why didn't Daniel

  293. receive the answer?

  294. The angel prince

  295. of the Persian kingdom

  296. resisted the angel

  297. who was sent

  298. with the message

  299. to Daniel

  300. for 21 days.

  301. So,

  302. this clearly

  303. demonstrates

  304. that there was

  305. spiritual warfare

  306. ongoing.

  307. however,

  308. Daniel persisted

  309. in prayer

  310. and fasted

  311. for 21 days

  312. and eventually

  313. received a revelation

  314. concerning God's people.

  315. This shows

  316. the need

  317. for persistence

  318. in prayer.

  319. And again,

  320. in 2nd Kings

  321. chapter 6,

  322. the king

  323. of Syria

  324. was hunting

  325. down Elisha

  326. and eventually

  327. surrounded him

  328. around the city

  329. of Dothan.

  330. Now,

  331. Elijah's servants,

  332. all Elijah's servants

  333. could see

  334. was the Syrian troops

  335. that were surrounding

  336. the city.

  337. However,

  338. Elisha

  339. was,

  340. Elisha's eyes

  341. were opened

  342. to the spiritual

  343. conflict

  344. ongoing

  345. around him.

  346. and he prayed

  347. that

  348. his servants'

  349. eyes

  350. would be opened

  351. and God

  352. opened the

  353. servants'

  354. eyes

  355. to see

  356. the chariots

  357. of fires

  358. and angelic

  359. warriors

  360. that were

  361. surrounding

  362. Elisha.

  363. I'll also

  364. mention

  365. two Old Testament

  366. heroes

  367. whose lives

  368. demonstrated

  369. powerful

  370. prevailing

  371. prayer.

  372. There are

  373. numerous

  374. examples

  375. in Scripture.

  376. However,

  377. I'll delve

  378. into the

  379. lives

  380. of

  381. Elijah

  382. and

  383. Nehemiah.

  384. One of the

  385. key verses

  386. in the life

  387. of Elijah

  388. is

  389. James 5

  390. 16-18

  391. where it

  392. demonstrates

  393. Elijah's

  394. persistence

  395. prayer.

  396. This is one

  397. of my

  398. favorite verses

  399. in the Bible.

  400. The text

  401. reads,

  402. The effective

  403. fervent

  404. prayer of a

  405. righteous man

  406. availeth much.

  407. Elijah was

  408. a man

  409. subject to

  410. like passions

  411. as we

  412. are,

  413. and he

  414. prayed

  415. earnestly

  416. that it

  417. might not

  418. rain,

  419. and it

  420. rained not

  421. on the

  422. earth by

  423. the space

  424. of three

  425. years and

  426. six months.

  427. And he

  428. prayed again,

  429. and the

  430. heaven gave

  431. rain,

  432. and the

  433. earth brought

  434. forth her

  435. fruit.

  436. However,

  437. note that

  438. in 1 Kings

    1 Kings 18 chapter mention

  439. chapter 18,

  440. it required

  441. one prayer

  442. from Elijah

  443. for fire

  444. to consume

  445. the sacrifice.

  446. However,

  447. he sent

  448. his servant

  449. to look

  450. towards the

  451. sea a

  452. total of

  453. seven times.

  454. During this

  455. time,

  456. the Bible

  457. tells us

  458. that he

  459. cast himself

  460. down on

  461. the ground

  462. and put

  463. his face

  464. between his

  465. knees.

  466. This is

  467. certainly

  468. the push

  469. of prayer

  470. before the

  471. living God.

  472. Now,

  473. let's see

  474. that it

  475. was only

  476. after the

  477. seventh time

  478. that his

  479. servant

  480. came to

  481. him and

  482. said,

  483. Behold,

  484. there arises

  485. a little

  486. cloud out

  487. of the sea

  488. like a

  489. man's

  490. hand.

  491. This

  492. later

  493. developed

  494. into

  495. black

  496. storm

  497. clouds

  498. and

  499. wind

  500. leading

  501. to

  502. rain.

  503. We see

  504. that Elijah

  505. was persistent

  506. and fervent

  507. in prayer.

  508. He simply

  509. did not

  510. give up

  511. after the

  512. third or

  513. fourth time.

  514. Nehemiah

  515. was also

  516. a man

  517. of prayer

  518. and action.

  519. On hearing

  520. of the sad

  521. and desperate

  522. state of

  523. the remnant

  524. and the

  525. state of

  526. Jerusalem,

  527. he wept,

  528. mourned,

  529. and fasted

  530. for several

  531. days and

  532. interceded

  533. for the

  534. people of

  535. Israel in

  536. Nehemiah

    Nehemiah 1 chapter mention

  537. chapter 1.

  538. At the

  539. end of the

  540. chapter,

  541. he asked

  542. for favor

  543. in the

  544. sight of

  545. the king.

  546. In

  547. chapter 2,

  548. we see

  549. him standing

  550. before the

  551. king,

  552. the king

  553. noticing his

  554. sad appearance

  555. and realizing

  556. that there

  557. was something

  558. going on in

  559. the heart

  560. of Nehemiah.

  561. what do

  562. we see

  563. Nehemiah

  564. doing?

  565. We see

  566. him praying

  567. to God

  568. whilst in

  569. the presence

  570. of the

  571. king,

  572. when he

  573. was asked

  574. about his

  575. personal

  576. request.

  577. We then

  578. see the

  579. mighty hand

  580. of God

  581. immediately

  582. at work.

  583. For think

  584. about it,

  585. which cup

  586. bearer

  587. would stand

  588. before a

  589. king and

  590. be elevated

  591. to a

  592. governorship

  593. if not

  594. for the

  595. mighty power

  596. of God

  597. which accompanied

  598. his prayer?

  599. In

  600. later chapters,

  601. you see

  602. that Nehemiah

  603. encountered

  604. intense

  605. opposition

  606. from his

  607. enemies

  608. when building

  609. the wall.

  610. In

  611. chapter 4,

  612. verses 1

  613. to 5,

  614. we see

  615. the fiery

  616. darts of

  617. the enemy

  618. which were

  619. held by

  620. Sanbalat

  621. and Tobias.

  622. What was

  623. Nehemiah's

  624. response?

  625. Was it

  626. to engage

  627. in a verbal

  628. slanging

  629. match or

  630. physical

  631. conflict?

  632. No.

  633. He prayed

  634. to God

  635. in verse

  636. 4 and

  637. was heard.

  638. In

  639. chapter 15,

  640. verse 15,

  641. we can see

  642. that God

  643. brought their

  644. counsel to

  645. naught.

  646. We can

  647. see that

  648. he prayed

  649. to God

  650. for strength

  651. for the

  652. work in

  653. chapters 6

  654. verse 9.

  655. Jesus

  656. commands us

  657. on several

  658. occasions to

  659. watch and

  660. to pray

  661. always.

  662. Paul also

  663. exhorts us

  664. in Colossians

    Colossians 4:2

  665. 4 verse 2

  666. to continue

  667. in prayer

  668. and watch

  669. in the same

  670. with thanksgiving.

  671. Thus,

  672. we must be

  673. persistent

  674. and prevail

  675. in prayer.

  676. Again,

  677. we must

  678. intercede for

  679. our families,

  680. our brethren,

  681. the church,

  682. our nation,

  683. and the

  684. world.

  685. Amen.

  686. Let's

  687. pray.

  688. Amen.

  689. Amen.

  690. Amen.

  691. Amen.

  692. Amen.

  693. Amen.

  694. Amen.

  695. Amen.

  696. Amen.

  697. Amen.

  698. Amen.

  699. Amen.

  700. Amen.

  701. Amen.

  702. Amen.

  703. Amen.

  704. Amen.

  705. Amen.

  706. Amen.

  707. Amen.

  708. Heavenly Father,

  709. we thank you

  710. for your word

  711. to us this

  712. morning.

  713. We pray

  714. that whatever

  715. was planted

  716. in our hearts

  717. will be watered

  718. and spring

  719. forth.

  720. I pray

  721. that you

  722. cause us

  723. to be persistent

  724. and to prevail

  725. in prayer.

  726. I pray

  727. that you

  728. grant us

  729. the grace

  730. and the strength

  731. not to lose

  732. heart,

  733. but to pray

  734. continually.

  735. I also

  736. pray that you

  737. also help

  738. us to be

  739. continually

  740. aware

  741. of the

  742. spiritual

  743. battle

  744. that we

  745. face

  746. that will

  747. appropriate

  748. the armor

  749. of God

  750. always

  751. and to be

  752. strong in

  753. you and

  754. in the

  755. power of

  756. your might.

  757. We thank

  758. you and

  759. bless you

  760. Father for

  761. answered

  762. prayer

  763. and for

  764. the opportunity

  765. to share

  766. your word

  767. this morning.

  768. In Jesus'

  769. name we

  770. pray.

  771. Amen.

  772. Amen.

  773. Amen.

  774. Amen.

  775. Amen.

  776. Amen.

  777. Amen.

  778. Amen.

  779. Amen.

  780. Amen.

  781. Amen.

  782. A cave.

  783. Amen.

  784. Amen.

  785. Amen.

  786. Thanks, Precious.

  787. Thanks, Precious.

  788. Thank you.

  789. That's cool.

  790. Yep.

  791. Okay.

  792. Pshh!
