  1. Dear Lord, this morning we thank you for your presence.

  2. We thank you for this wonderful day that you have given us.

  3. We thank you for this chance that we have to study your word together,

  4. together in a place without any fear.

  5. And we pray especially for all of our brothers and sisters around the world

  6. who do not have that privilege.

  7. We pray for every group of people that gathers today

  8. to worship you, to honor you, to hear from your word, to praise you.

  9. And we pray that your Holy Spirit be with everyone.

  10. And those persons that hear for the first time from you,

  11. that they might be drawn towards you

  12. and may accept you as their Lord and Savior.

  13. And those that do know you already,

  14. that they might be built up in their faith.

  15. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  16. My name is Martin.

  17. I am from Paraguay.

  18. My wife Betty is there.

  19. We are married 30 years.

  20. Actually, that will be tomorrow.

  21. We have three sons.

  22. The oldest is 26.

  23. The second 22.

  24. The third is 14.

  25. And except for 10 years that we lived in different parts of the world,

  26. we lived all our life in Paraguay.

  27. Our parents were born in Paraguay, at least mine.

  28. And our grandparents were immigrants,

  29. Soviet Union refugees,

  30. that for some weird reason spoke German.

  31. So, English is obviously not my first language,

  32. not even my second.

  33. So, please forgive my spelling mistakes and pronunciation and so forth.

  34. This month we are talking about prayer.

  35. And last Sunday we had a wonderful explanation on how to pray.

  36. So, I thought I can't add anything to that.

  37. So, how are we supposed to pray?

  38. So, I was decided to focus more on what does God do in answer to our prayers.

  39. So, I don't know if the truth is correct there.

  40. How does God answer to our prayers?

  41. Or how does God answer our prayers?

  42. Whatever.

  43. But I see from Psalm and from many other parts that people who pray to God expect an answer.

  44. So, in Psalm 17 it says,

  45. I call on you, my God, for you will answer me.

  46. Turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.

  47. When I was much younger,

  48. we were taught at church that God has three ways to answer us.

  49. He says, sometimes he says yes,

  50. which is what all of us want to hear.

  51. Sometimes he says no.

  52. And sometimes he says wait.

  53. So, I thought, well, that's good.

  54. And when I tried to teach that to my sons,

  55. once they were smart enough to debate me,

  56. they said, well, that covers all the bases.

  57. So, you can, with that answer,

  58. you can always use something of that.

  59. Whenever you pray and you don't get what you want,

  60. okay, God said no or God said wait or whatever.

  61. So, it wasn't very helpful for them.

  62. But I think God hears all our prayers.

  63. I think he answers.

  64. I found seven ways how God answers in the Bible.

  65. There might be others, of course,

  66. but I want to share these ones with you.

  67. First, and that's what most people would like to hear,

  68. God speaks directly sometimes.

  69. And I think all these parts that we have in the Bible

  70. are still, should work, or are working today.

  71. I know people who have heard God's word directly.

  72. And one of these nice conversations that I find in the Bible,

  73. of course, we have to be very selective.

  74. We can't go over everything,

  75. is between Jonah and God.

  76. And it says there, it's in Jonah 4,

  77. but to Jonah, this seemed very wrong,

  78. and he became angry.

  79. He prayed to the Lord.

  80. So, let's use the word, he prayed to the Lord.

  81. Isn't this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home?

  82. That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish.

  83. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God,

  84. slow to anger and abounding in love,

  85. a God who relents from sending calamity.

  86. Now, Lord, take away my life,

  87. for it is better for me to die than to live.

  88. But the Lord replied.

  89. So, he speaks directly to Jonah.

  90. Is it right for you to be angry?

  91. And then the conversation goes on.

  92. When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind,

  93. and the sun blazed on Jonah's head so that he grew faint.

  94. He wanted to die and said,

  95. it will be better for me to die than to live.

  96. But God said to Jonah,

  97. is it right for you to be angry about the plant?

  98. It is, he said.

  99. And I'm so angry, I wish I were dead.

  100. But the Lord said,

  101. you have been concerned about this plant.

  102. Though you did not tend it or make it grow,

  103. it sprang up overnight and died overnight,

  104. and so on.

  105. We know that conversation.

  106. So, there is a,

  107. we wish for this to happen.

  108. So that we pray and God speaks to us directly.

  109. At the end of our class,

  110. we will have some minutes that you can share the ways that God has spoken to you.

  111. I know there are some people who have heard God's voice.

  112. In my case, it happened only once.

  113. And where you hear a voice,

  114. and you know it's God,

  115. but you don't know where it comes from.

  116. But it is clear,

  117. and sometimes,

  118. in my case,

  119. it was not as long as this.

  120. It was just one sentence.

  121. So, that is one way.

  122. Okay, here.

  123. Okay, there it goes.

  124. I'm not a good expert either on PowerPoint,

  125. so I had to do it myself.

  126. Before that, when my sons,

  127. the oldest were with me,

  128. they helped me always with that.

  129. God speaks through the Bible.

  130. That is, I think,

  131. what we are most familiar with.

  132. You know, we have some concern,

  133. and so we open the Bible,

  134. and look if the Bible tells anything to us.

  135. And that's what the disciples did.

  136. After Jesus went to heaven,

  137. and they were together,

  138. and there were 11 of them,

  139. and then Peter says,

  140. so it's up and says,

  141. okay, we have to do something here.

  142. And then he quotes two scriptures,

  143. two verses from scripture,

  144. that today,

  145. theologians will be having

  146. a little problem,

  147. maybe saying,

  148. okay, this does not directly speak

  149. to the problem that they are having there.

  150. But he says,

  151. may his place be deserted.

  152. For St. Peter,

  153. it is written in the book of Psalms,

  154. may his place be deserted,

  155. let there be no one to dwell in it.

  156. That was one thing.

  157. And may another take his place

  158. for leadership.

  159. So,

  160. he says,

  161. therefore,

  162. it is necessary to choose

  163. one of the men

  164. who have been with us

  165. the whole time

  166. the Lord Jesus

  167. was living among us.

  168. So,

  169. I don't know

  170. if you are

  171. one of those persons

  172. who says,

  173. okay, Lord,

  174. I need your direction.

  175. You close your eyes,

  176. you open the Bible,

  177. you put your finger

  178. on some verse

  179. and say,

  180. that must be the answer.

  181. And,

  182. sometimes it works,

  183. but most often,

  184. not quite.

  185. There's one lady

  186. in our church

  187. who bought a house

  188. according to that one,

  189. because she didn't know

  190. if she should move

  191. closer to a church or not,

  192. but one day,

  193. she opened the Bible

  194. and read one of the Psalms,

  195. let us go to Jerusalem

  196. to the house of the Lord.

  197. And she says,

  198. okay,

  199. that was the answer.

  200. So,

  201. okay.

  202. I wouldn't,

  203. probably not buy a house

  204. according to one of those verses,

  205. but she did.

  206. It worked for her.

  207. This one,

  208. I think,

  209. we would be most

  210. uncomfortable with.

  211. God speaks

  212. through casting lots.

  213. I mean,

  214. the same verse,

  215. portion that we were

  216. just reading,

  217. continues after that.

  218. When the disciples

  219. had decided,

  220. according to some

  221. Old Testament scriptures,

  222. that they needed

  223. a replacement,

  224. that there couldn't

  225. just be 11 of them,

  226. and then they chose,

  227. according to my opinion,

  228. the wrong guy,

  229. because there it is,

  230. oh no,

  231. here it is,

  232. yeah.

  233. They had one Joseph

  234. called Barzavos,

  235. also known as justice.

  236. So,

  237. that was a person,

  238. in my opinion,

  239. it sounds like a just person,

  240. when you go into Greek.

  241. He has,

  242. he has,

  243. we say in Spanish,

  244. a curriculum,

  245. he has,

  246. he has built something up,

  247. and Matthias.

  248. We don't know anything

  249. about Matthias.

  250. But he got chosen.

  251. And after that,

  252. he never appears

  253. again

  254. in the whole Bible.

  255. So,

  256. we don't know

  257. if he did anything.

  258. We would think,

  259. well,

  260. Paul,

  261. for instance,

  262. would fit much better

  263. with the apostles,

  264. or maybe

  265. Barnabas,

  266. or some of the guys

  267. who are really good,

  268. you know,

  269. who did lots of things.

  270. But,

  271. it was Matthias,

  272. according to this.

  273. So,

  274. you just cast lots.

  275. I know

  276. two churches,

  277. one church

  278. and one seminary,

  279. who chose

  280. their leaders like that.

  281. When the board

  282. was divided,

  283. deadlocked,

  284. okay,

  285. they cast lots.

  286. In the case

  287. of the seminary,

  288. in the case

  289. of the church,

  290. it was the whole

  291. procedure from

  292. the beginning.

  293. Everyone knew

  294. at the end,

  295. there will be

  296. two candidates

  297. and God

  298. will decide

  299. through lots

  300. who will be

  301. our senior pastor.

  302. And according

  303. to the members,

  304. God chose wisely.

  305. You know,

  306. I tell you

  307. because it's

  308. in the Bible.

  309. I'm not suggesting

  310. anything.

  311. This was actually

  312. in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  313. God speaks

  314. through dreams.

  315. And

  316. what strikes me

  317. most is that

  318. God so often

  319. speaks to people

  320. in dreams

  321. who are officially

  322. not His people.

  323. Or who officially

  324. don't acknowledge

  325. Him as the only

  326. God in heaven.

  327. God

  328. So we have

  329. a list

  330. from Abimelech,

  331. for instance,

  332. who through

  333. some lie

  334. on Abraham's

  335. side

  336. or of his

  337. wife's side

  338. got together

  339. with Sarah

  340. and then God

  341. had to intervene

  342. because before

  343. something happened

  344. bad,

  345. so He spoke

  346. to him in a dream

  347. and He said,

  348. that woman

  349. that you have

  350. there belongs

  351. to another man

  352. and you should

  353. not have anything

  354. to do with her.

  355. So that's the way

  356. He spoke to them.

  357. Laban or Laban,

  358. I don't know how

  359. you say it in English,

  360. he was the uncle

  361. of Jacob.

  362. He worshipped

  363. other gods

  364. and God speaks

  365. to him in a dream.

  366. We know,

  367. of course,

  368. the story of the

  369. copier and the

  370. baker in the

  371. jail who met

  372. Joseph.

  373. The pharaoh

  374. himself had a dream.

  375. God spoke to him.

  376. A Midianite

  377. soldier

  378. had a dream

  379. where he dreamt

  380. about Gideon.

  381. Nebuchadnezzar

  382. had several dreams,

  383. bad ones

  384. that made

  385. scared him very much.

  386. The Magi

  387. were people

  388. who had a job

  389. that was not

  390. allowed in Israel.

  391. Observing stars

  392. and reading stars

  393. and interpreting

  394. stuff from that.

  395. In the Bible,

  396. the autonomy,

  397. God says

  398. people like that

  399. should be cast

  400. out of Israel,

  401. should be killed.

  402. But then he reveals

  403. himself to them

  404. in a star,

  405. first one,

  406. but once they are

  407. in Bethlehem

  408. or wherever they

  409. went to find Jesus,

  410. that night he speaks

  411. to them in a dream.

  412. Not through stars

  413. or anything,

  414. he speaks in a dream

  415. to them.

  416. And even the wife

  417. of Pilate

  418. had a dream,

  419. seems not a pleasant

  420. one,

  421. because she says

  422. her husband,

  423. let him go,

  424. don't have anything

  425. to do with him.

  426. But of course

  427. God speaks to his

  428. people,

  429. also,

  430. Jacob,

  431. Joseph,

  432. Solomon,

  433. Daniel,

  434. Joseph,

  435. the husband

  436. of Mary.

  437. It always is

  438. interesting to me

  439. that God speaks

  440. once to Mary,

  441. but three times

  442. to Joseph.

  443. I can understand

  444. that.

  445. If he would ask

  446. me to marry

  447. my girlfriend

  448. who is pregnant

  449. from the Holy Spirit,

  450. I mean,

  451. he would have to

  452. talk a lot to me

  453. to convince me

  454. about that one.

  455. But we must be

  456. aware also

  457. that not all

  458. dreams are from

  459. God.

  460. And we were

  461. together at a

  462. seminary in

  463. Europe with my

  464. wife a couple

  465. years ago,

  466. where every

  467. day in the

  468. morning,

  469. people were

  470. invited to share

  471. their dreams.

  472. And the staff

  473. interpreted the

  474. dreams for us.

  475. and some

  476. of us

  477. participants

  478. also wanted

  479. to chip in

  480. and say,

  481. I think it

  482. means that,

  483. but we were

  484. not allowed

  485. to interpret,

  486. only staff

  487. could.

  488. So,

  489. that was

  490. rather an

  491. interesting

  492. experience,

  493. because we

  494. all dream a

  495. lot,

  496. and most of

  497. us don't

  498. think much

  499. about it.

  500. We think,

  501. okay,

  502. psychology

  503. says it's

  504. what you

  505. lived through

  506. the last

  507. days or

  508. hours or

  509. whatever is

  510. on your

  511. mind,

  512. that's what

  513. you're

  514. dreaming.

  515. but maybe

  516. there might

  517. be more

  518. to it as

  519. we think.

  520. Jeremiah

  521. says,

  522. Indeed,

  523. I am against

  524. those who

  525. prophesy

  526. false dreams,

  527. declares the

  528. Lord.

  529. They tell

  530. them and

  531. lead my

  532. people astray

  533. with their

  534. reckless lies,

  535. and yet I

  536. did not send

  537. or appoint

  538. them.

  539. They do

  540. not benefit

  541. these people

  542. in the least,

  543. declares the

  544. Lord.

  545. So,

  546. those people

  547. who just tell

  548. their dreams

  549. and always

  550. say,

  551. I dreamt

  552. something about

  553. you and

  554. so on.

  555. Even God

  556. himself says,

  557. be a little

  558. careful with

  559. that.

  560. But,

  561. there's a

  562. promise from

  563. Joel 2,

  564. and we know

  565. that promise

  566. got fulfilled,

  567. and afterward,

  568. I will pour

  569. out my spirit

  570. on all people.

  571. Your sons and

  572. daughters will

  573. prophesy.

  574. Your old men

  575. will dream

  576. dreams.

  577. So,

  578. I think I'm

  579. almost in that

  580. category already,

  581. you know,

  582. of the dreaming

  583. dreams.

  584. Your young men

  585. will see

  586. visions.

  587. And,

  588. Peter says,

  589. once the

  590. Holy Spirit

  591. falls on the

  592. disciples,

  593. and they

  594. all are

  595. speaking the

  596. gospel,

  597. and everybody

  598. who is there

  599. can understand,

  600. Peter says,

  601. this is the

  602. fulfillment.

  603. This is what

  604. Joel spoke

  605. about.

  606. So,

  607. according to

  608. him,

  609. that happened

  610. in Pentecost

  611. already.

  612. God speaks

  613. also to

  614. visions.

  615. Visions and

  616. dreams are

  617. not the

  618. same.

  619. They are

  620. often paired

  621. in the

  622. Bible,

  623. so they

  624. appear together

  625. in many

  626. verses,

  627. but vision

  628. is something

  629. that a

  630. person sees,

  631. and it can

  632. be in broad

  633. daylight.

  634. It's not a

  635. dream while

  636. you are

  637. sleeping.

  638. and I

  639. know people

  640. who have

  641. seen visions.

  642. To me,

  643. it happened

  644. twice that I

  645. know that I

  646. suddenly see a

  647. picture in

  648. front of me,

  649. and then it

  650. disappears again,

  651. and you

  652. know exactly

  653. what it is,

  654. or you know

  655. most often

  656. what it's

  657. supposed to

  658. be.

  659. So I

  660. just took

  661. one from

  662. Isaiah,

  663. first verse

  664. of the

  665. whole prophet,

  666. the vision

  667. concerning Judah

  668. and Jerusalem,

  669. that Isaiah

  670. son of Amos

  671. saw during

  672. reigns of

  673. all these

  674. kings.

  675. So of

  676. course,

  677. then it

  678. goes on

  679. 66 chapters.

  680. That's a

  681. very long

  682. vision,

  683. I should

  684. say a

  685. long list

  686. of visions

  687. that he

  688. saw there.

  689. God

  690. speaks to

  691. open and

  692. also to

  693. closed doors.

  694. Some call

  695. this the

  696. situations or

  697. the opportunities

  698. and so on.

  699. So,

  700. from Paul,

  701. we know,

  702. and I

  703. like to

  704. ask my

  705. students,

  706. how did

  707. Paul know

  708. where he

  709. was going

  710. while he

  711. was led

  712. by the

  713. Holy Spirit?

  714. When they

  715. did their

  716. first missions

  717. trip,

  718. because it's

  719. interesting,

  720. they start,

  721. they don't

  722. go just

  723. like,

  724. okay,

  725. now we

  726. are sent

  727. out by

  728. our church,

  729. let's go

  730. down to

  731. the port,

  732. take the

  733. first ship,

  734. and go

  735. where it

  736. goes.

  737. Actually,

  738. they go

  739. first to

  740. the people

  741. of where

  742. Barnabas

  743. came from.

  744. He came

  745. from that

  746. island,

  747. Cyprus,

  748. in English,

  749. yeah.

  750. That's where

  751. he came

  752. from,

  753. so they

  754. went first

  755. to visit

  756. his people.

  757. But,

  758. normally,

  759. good students

  760. say,

  761. Holy Spirit.

  762. So I

  763. say,

  764. well,

  765. look at

  766. this,

  767. Paul and

  768. his companions

  769. traveled

  770. throughout the

  771. region of

  772. Phyrgia and

  773. Galatia,

  774. having been

  775. kept by the

  776. Holy Spirit

  777. from preaching

  778. the word in

  779. the province

  780. of Asia.

  781. So they

  782. wanted to

  783. preach in

  784. Asia,

  785. but the

  786. Spirit did

  787. not allow

  788. it.

  789. When they

  790. came to

  791. the border

  792. of Mesia,

  793. they tried

  794. to enter

  795. Bithynia,

  796. but the

  797. Spirit of

  798. Jesus would

  799. not allow

  800. them to.

  801. So,

  802. again,

  803. they closed

  804. the door

  805. there.

  806. But then,

  807. in other

  808. parts,

  809. in 1st

  810. Thessalonians,

  811. Paul says,

  812. I wanted

  813. to go to

  814. you,

  815. but Satan

  816. did not

  817. allow me.

  818. So I'm

  819. amazed how

  820. Paul could

  821. tell the

  822. difference.

  823. When is

  824. the Holy

  825. Spirit

  826. closing a

  827. door,

  828. and when

  829. it is

  830. Satan?

  831. I only

  832. know when

  833. the door

  834. is closed.

  835. And,

  836. well,

  837. probably the

  838. difference

  839. isn't

  840. that much

  841. important,

  842. because if

  843. the door

  844. is closed,

  845. it's closed.

  846. But Paul

  847. had this

  848. capacity of

  849. discerning

  850. who had

  851. closed the

  852. doors.

  853. So,

  854. in this

  855. case,

  856. two doors

  857. got closed

  858. to Paul,

  859. and it

  860. was after

  861. that that

  862. he had

  863. this vision

  864. at night

  865. from this

  866. guy from

  867. Macedonia

  868. who were

  869. calling him

  870. come and

  871. help us

  872. there.

  873. So,

  874. through these

  875. closed doors

  876. where he

  877. could not

  878. go in,

  879. he understood

  880. that he

  881. had to go

  882. somewhere else.

  883. and,

  884. when we

  885. wanted to

  886. go to

  887. the United

  888. States to

  889. study many

  890. years ago,

  891. it was

  892. very easy

  893. for God

  894. to close

  895. doors.

  896. Because I

  897. told him,

  898. you know,

  899. we are so

  900. dependent on

  901. you,

  902. not just

  903. because of

  904. finances,

  905. because of

  906. visa.

  907. There

  908. isn't

  909. anything you

  910. can do

  911. as

  912. Paraguayan

  913. to get a

  914. U.S.

  915. American

  916. visa.

  917. You

  918. depend

  919. completely

  920. on

  921. God

  922. in

  923. first

  924. place

  925. and

  926. on

  927. the

  928. mood

  929. of

  930. the

  931. person

  932. in

  933. front

  934. of

  935. you

  936. who

  937. does

  938. the

  939. interview

  940. with

  941. you

  942. at

  943. the

  944. embassy

  945. and

  946. so on.

  947. So,

  948. we said,

  949. if you

  950. get us

  951. through that,

  952. we understand

  953. when the

  954. door is

  955. open,

  956. we can

  957. go in.

  958. If not,

  959. we go to

  960. some other

  961. place.

  962. And,

  963. the

  964. seventh

  965. way of

  966. speaking,

  967. God speaks

  968. through other

  969. persons.

  970. In the

  971. Bible,

  972. he did

  973. that often

  974. to

  975. prophets.

  976. But,

  977. it doesn't

  978. need always

  979. to be a

  980. prophet.

  981. And,

  982. I will

  983. speak to

  984. that

  985. in a

  986. personal

  987. short

  988. testimony.

  989. I'm

  990. trying to

  991. refrain

  992. myself

  993. to give

  994. an example

  995. to each

  996. of those.

  997. So,

  998. I will

  999. just give

  1000. one here.

  1001. In

  1002. Acts

  1003. 21,

  1004. we have

  1005. this

  1006. interesting

  1007. experience.

  1008. After

  1009. we had

  1010. been there

  1011. a number

  1012. of days,

  1013. a prophet

  1014. named

  1015. Agabus

  1016. came down

  1017. from

  1018. Judea,

  1019. coming

  1020. over

  1021. to

  1022. us,

  1023. he took

  1024. Paul's

  1025. belt,

  1026. tied his

  1027. own hands

  1028. and feet

  1029. with it,

  1030. and said,

  1031. the Holy

  1032. Spirit says,

  1033. in this

  1034. way,

  1035. the Jewish

  1036. leaders in

  1037. Jerusalem will

  1038. bin the

  1039. owner of

  1040. this belt,

  1041. and will

  1042. hand him

  1043. over to

  1044. the Gentiles.

  1045. So,

  1046. that was

  1047. very specific.

  1048. But,

  1049. the problem

  1050. is,

  1051. when we

  1052. think that

  1053. Paul said,

  1054. okay,

  1055. then I'm

  1056. not going

  1057. to Jerusalem,

  1058. he said,

  1059. well,

  1060. thank you for

  1061. the information.

  1062. I knew that

  1063. all along,

  1064. the Holy

  1065. Spirit told

  1066. me in

  1067. every part

  1068. that that

  1069. will happen,

  1070. so I

  1071. will just

  1072. keep going.

  1073. Even though

  1074. his whole

  1075. entourage,

  1076. his whole

  1077. team told

  1078. him not

  1079. to go to

  1080. Jerusalem,

  1081. Paul didn't

  1082. take this

  1083. as an

  1084. advice from

  1085. God for

  1086. not going

  1087. there.

  1088. For him,

  1089. it was just

  1090. a piece of

  1091. information,

  1092. you know,

  1093. okay,

  1094. or confirmation.

  1095. Okay,

  1096. we know what

  1097. will happen

  1098. there.

  1099. So,

  1100. often,

  1101. I'm

  1102. teaching at

  1103. a seminary

  1104. for,

  1105. this would

  1106. be if I

  1107. was at

  1108. a seminary,

  1109. I started

  1110. teaching 27

  1111. years ago,

  1112. we married

  1113. very young,

  1114. so,

  1115. these days,

  1116. most people

  1117. would not

  1118. get married

  1119. during college

  1120. years,

  1121. I think,

  1122. but at

  1123. that time,

  1124. we were

  1125. thinking,

  1126. being poor

  1127. alone and

  1128. being poor

  1129. together,

  1130. what's the

  1131. difference?

  1132. So,

  1133. let's just

  1134. being poor

  1135. together and

  1136. have fun

  1137. while we

  1138. are being

  1139. poor and

  1140. whatever.

  1141. So,

  1142. what I want

  1143. to say,

  1144. my two

  1145. oldest sons

  1146. are older

  1147. than me

  1148. at this

  1149. point,

  1150. when I

  1151. got married

  1152. and they

  1153. are still

  1154. single,

  1155. I'm fine

  1156. with that.

  1157. Just get

  1158. your bases

  1159. down and

  1160. so on.

  1161. Yeah,

  1162. very,

  1163. very,

  1164. yeah,

  1165. I'm the

  1166. student,

  1167. so I

  1168. had the

  1169. privilege for

  1170. over 20

  1171. years,

  1172. always having

  1173. young students

  1174. in classes

  1175. who always

  1176. want to

  1177. know,

  1178. how does

  1179. God speak

  1180. to me?

  1181. So,

  1182. I tell

  1183. them these

  1184. seven things

  1185. and often

  1186. I,

  1187. we end up

  1188. at the

  1189. seventh.

  1190. I say,

  1191. just go to

  1192. some people

  1193. that you

  1194. consider

  1195. mature,

  1196. spiritual

  1197. Christians

  1198. and ask

  1199. them for

  1200. advice.

  1201. And God

  1202. speaks through

  1203. them.

  1204. in the

  1205. year 2011,

  1206. I was

  1207. taking my

  1208. first

  1209. sabbatical

  1210. in Paraguay

  1211. it is

  1212. very unusual

  1213. to take

  1214. a sabbatical

  1215. so that

  1216. means you

  1217. don't get

  1218. paid.

  1219. You have

  1220. to find

  1221. your own

  1222. way to

  1223. live during

  1224. that

  1225. sabbatical.

  1226. In my

  1227. case,

  1228. it even

  1229. meant I

  1230. had to

  1231. step down

  1232. from the

  1233. position I

  1234. was director

  1235. of a

  1236. seminary

  1237. because they

  1238. said,

  1239. well,

  1240. we don't

  1241. have

  1242. sabbaticals,

  1243. if you

  1244. want to

  1245. take a

  1246. year off,

  1247. you have

  1248. to step

  1249. down.

  1250. I did

  1251. that because

  1252. I was so

  1253. convinced that

  1254. God wanted

  1255. me to

  1256. take a

  1257. sabbatical.

  1258. So during

  1259. that year,

  1260. we had to

  1261. decide what

  1262. we will do

  1263. next year.

  1264. In Paraguay,

  1265. the appointments

  1266. all run

  1267. from January

  1268. to December.

  1269. I mean,

  1270. everything starts

  1271. with January,

  1272. not like here

  1273. because right

  1274. now we have

  1275. summer there.

  1276. So it's

  1277. all just

  1278. the way

  1279. around it,

  1280. like here.

  1281. School year

  1282. starts in

  1283. February,

  1284. ends in

  1285. end of

  1286. November

  1287. and so

  1288. on.

  1289. So I

  1290. got three

  1291. proposals,

  1292. three offers,

  1293. job offers,

  1294. very good

  1295. ones,

  1296. and people

  1297. wanted me

  1298. by the

  1299. end of

  1300. June to

  1301. tell them

  1302. which one

  1303. I will

  1304. have so

  1305. that they

  1306. had another

  1307. six months

  1308. to look

  1309. for some

  1310. other person.

  1311. So I

  1312. was very

  1313. thankful

  1314. that the

  1315. Lord didn't

  1316. abandon me

  1317. and say,

  1318. okay,

  1319. there's

  1320. enough work

  1321. to do.

  1322. But I

  1323. didn't feel

  1324. very good

  1325. with any

  1326. of these

  1327. offers.

  1328. They were

  1329. good,

  1330. but not

  1331. exactly what

  1332. I was

  1333. thinking would

  1334. fit me

  1335. and my

  1336. concerns and

  1337. so on.

  1338. So I

  1339. was invited

  1340. to

  1341. Colombia,

  1342. Bogota,

  1343. Colombia,

  1344. for a

  1345. big

  1346. revival

  1347. meeting.

  1348. There's a

  1349. church that

  1350. they claim

  1351. that sits

  1352. 25,000.

  1353. It's a

  1354. bunch of

  1355. factories that

  1356. they bucked

  1357. together and

  1358. threw out the

  1359. walls and

  1360. made.

  1361. It's called

  1362. the city

  1363. of God

  1364. because even

  1365. the aisles

  1366. are numbered

  1367. and have

  1368. names so

  1369. that you

  1370. don't get

  1371. lost once

  1372. you go to

  1373. the bathroom

  1374. and you

  1375. find your

  1376. way back

  1377. again.

  1378. It's a

  1379. huge place.

  1380. I didn't

  1381. count if

  1382. there were

  1383. 25,000 in

  1384. it, but

  1385. I believe

  1386. it.

  1387. So

  1388. preachers

  1389. were very

  1390. charismatic

  1391. and had

  1392. this

  1393. Pentecostal

  1394. touch that

  1395. I don't

  1396. like very

  1397. much during

  1398. preaching when

  1399. they always

  1400. say,

  1401. tell your

  1402. neighbor,

  1403. God is

  1404. great.

  1405. Tell your

  1406. neighbor,

  1407. God made

  1408. you beautiful

  1409. and tell

  1410. your neighbor

  1411. this and

  1412. tell the

  1413. person next

  1414. to you

  1415. that and

  1416. tell the

  1417. person,

  1418. I don't

  1419. know what

  1420. else.

  1421. So I

  1422. usually

  1423. participate

  1424. once or

  1425. twice in

  1426. that.

  1427. I think

  1428. it's

  1429. ridiculous

  1430. because the

  1431. person heard

  1432. what the

  1433. preacher was

  1434. saying and

  1435. I think

  1436. the preacher

  1437. is just

  1438. using that

  1439. to think

  1440. what he

  1441. will say

  1442. next.

  1443. So usually

  1444. I tell

  1445. the person,

  1446. God is

  1447. great,

  1448. you are

  1449. great,

  1450. and after

  1451. that,

  1452. after I

  1453. have done

  1454. it once

  1455. or twice

  1456. or three

  1457. times max

  1458. that I

  1459. just,

  1460. I mean,

  1461. you heard

  1462. what he

  1463. said.

  1464. But one

  1465. of these

  1466. occasions,

  1467. I had

  1468. prayed before

  1469. the trip,

  1470. it was at

  1471. the end

  1472. of June,

  1473. I prayed

  1474. to God,

  1475. please show

  1476. me on

  1477. this trip

  1478. which one

  1479. of these

  1480. offers I

  1481. have to

  1482. accept,

  1483. which one

  1484. would be

  1485. the one

  1486. that you

  1487. want me

  1488. to take

  1489. on.

  1490. So suddenly

  1491. the preacher

  1492. says again,

  1493. tell the

  1494. person next

  1495. to you,

  1496. I show

  1497. them my

  1498. thumb up

  1499. to my

  1500. neighbor,

  1501. and he

  1502. turns to

  1503. me and

  1504. says,

  1505. God says,

  1506. don't move

  1507. until I

  1508. tell you

  1509. so.

  1510. I don't

  1511. know if

  1512. that makes

  1513. sense to

  1514. you,

  1515. but that's

  1516. what I

  1517. heard God

  1518. saying.

  1519. He didn't

  1520. know me,

  1521. I didn't

  1522. know him,

  1523. it was

  1524. not what

  1525. the preacher

  1526. had said,

  1527. of course

  1528. not.

  1529. So,

  1530. he didn't

  1531. know if

  1532. it made

  1533. sense to

  1534. me,

  1535. I didn't

  1536. tell him

  1537. that it

  1538. made a

  1539. lot of

  1540. sense to

  1541. me,

  1542. but it

  1543. scared me

  1544. also a

  1545. little.

  1546. I came

  1547. back home

  1548. and I

  1549. called all

  1550. the three

  1551. places and

  1552. told him I

  1553. would not

  1554. take it,

  1555. which is

  1556. very

  1557. not

  1558. responsible

  1559. for a

  1560. person who

  1561. has a

  1562. family.

  1563. So,

  1564. you are

  1565. six months

  1566. short of

  1567. your

  1568. sabbatical,

  1569. you don't

  1570. have anything,

  1571. July passed,

  1572. all of it,

  1573. half of

  1574. August passed,

  1575. and nothing,

  1576. and then I

  1577. was in,

  1578. we have in

  1579. Paraguay,

  1580. we have every

  1581. year a

  1582. national

  1583. marathon of

  1584. prayer,

  1585. where the

  1586. whole country,

  1587. well,

  1588. all the

  1589. Christians in the

  1590. country are

  1591. invited to

  1592. pray for

  1593. 24 hours,

  1594. and in

  1595. that

  1596. gathering,

  1597. the

  1598. president of

  1599. the

  1600. Pastors

  1601. Association

  1602. of

  1603. Paraguay

  1604. invited me

  1605. for a

  1606. meeting

  1607. together

  1608. with

  1609. another

  1610. guy

  1611. who

  1612. runs

  1613. a

  1614. foundation,

  1615. a

  1616. ministry,

  1617. and they

  1618. told me,

  1619. you know,

  1620. we have so

  1621. many pastors

  1622. in Paraguay

  1623. who have

  1624. never had a

  1625. chance to

  1626. go to a

  1627. Bible school,

  1628. and we

  1629. need to do

  1630. something with

  1631. them.

  1632. They

  1633. didn't tell

  1634. me anything

  1635. new,

  1636. I had

  1637. done a

  1638. survey,

  1639. for a

  1640. U.S.

  1641. American

  1642. university,

  1643. so I

  1644. knew the

  1645. percentage,

  1646. I knew

  1647. that 90%

  1648. of pastors

  1649. in Paraguay

  1650. never had

  1651. any formal

  1652. theological

  1653. training.

  1654. So they

  1655. are standing

  1656. every Sunday

  1657. before a

  1658. church,

  1659. not knowing

  1660. what they

  1661. are doing,

  1662. basically,

  1663. or not

  1664. knowing what

  1665. they should

  1666. do.

  1667. A church

  1668. like this,

  1669. that has

  1670. at least

  1671. three

  1672. well-educated

  1673. pastors

  1674. would be

  1675. a huge

  1676. luxury

  1677. in Paraguay.

  1678. It would

  1679. almost be

  1680. admirable

  1681. to have

  1682. that.

  1683. You should

  1684. split those

  1685. pastors and

  1686. send them

  1687. somewhere else.

  1688. But I

  1689. know the

  1690. situation is

  1691. different.

  1692. So during

  1693. the next

  1694. month,

  1695. the Lord

  1696. gave me

  1697. a vision

  1698. for what

  1699. we call

  1700. the Aquila

  1701. and Priscilla

  1702. Institute.

  1703. And you

  1704. might ask,

  1705. is there

  1706. anything wrong

  1707. with formal

  1708. theological

  1709. training?

  1710. I don't

  1711. think there

  1712. is anything

  1713. wrong with

  1714. it,

  1715. but we

  1716. know,

  1717. at least

  1718. in Paraguay,

  1719. it's elitist,

  1720. only a few,

  1721. very few

  1722. people can

  1723. go there.

  1724. It's

  1725. expensive,

  1726. it's

  1727. geographically

  1728. bound,

  1729. you have to

  1730. go to

  1731. the capital

  1732. city to

  1733. go to

  1734. that

  1735. seminary,

  1736. you are

  1737. there confined

  1738. for a

  1739. couple of

  1740. years,

  1741. and it

  1742. often doesn't

  1743. produce the

  1744. kind of

  1745. leaders we

  1746. wish for.

  1747. At least

  1748. that's what

  1749. always the

  1750. churches tell

  1751. us,

  1752. saying,

  1753. you know,

  1754. we had a

  1755. pastor that

  1756. went there

  1757. and it's

  1758. not quite

  1759. what we

  1760. were thinking

  1761. and so

  1762. on.

  1763. So is

  1764. there a

  1765. need for

  1766. an

  1767. alternative?

  1768. When you

  1769. have 90%

  1770. of churches

  1771. that don't

  1772. have a

  1773. pastor,

  1774. there is

  1775. a need

  1776. for it.

  1777. In

  1778. 2016,

  1779. there was

  1780. a congress

  1781. in Thailand

  1782. that I was

  1783. able to

  1784. attend where

  1785. it says

  1786. that the

  1787. number

  1788. worldwide

  1789. is at

  1790. 85%.

  1791. So

  1792. Paraguay

  1793. is a

  1794. little

  1795. worse

  1796. than the

  1797. average

  1798. in the

  1799. world.

  1800. The

  1801. United

  1802. States

  1803. is a

  1804. lot

  1805. better

  1806. than the

  1807. rest of

  1808. the world

  1809. because most

  1810. of the

  1811. churches

  1812. have

  1813. pastors

  1814. who went

  1815. to seminary.

  1816. So

  1817. since most

  1818. pastors don't

  1819. have academic

  1820. preparation to

  1821. go to an

  1822. institution of

  1823. higher education,

  1824. it means they

  1825. never finished

  1826. high school.

  1827. We even have

  1828. pastors who

  1829. can't read

  1830. or write

  1831. and you ask

  1832. yourself,

  1833. so how do

  1834. they preach?

  1835. preach.

  1836. I

  1837. discovered

  1838. they preach

  1839. by memory.

  1840. They have

  1841. some 50

  1842. or 100

  1843. or 150

  1844. verses in

  1845. their mind

  1846. that they

  1847. heard and

  1848. that's their

  1849. whole repertoire

  1850. what they

  1851. are preaching

  1852. by.

  1853. And so

  1854. you don't

  1855. have to

  1856. wonder if

  1857. the sermons

  1858. are repeating

  1859. themselves

  1860. regularly.

  1861. They don't

  1862. have the

  1863. finances to

  1864. pay for

  1865. this excellent

  1866. but highly

  1867. elitist

  1868. kind of

  1869. education.

  1870. the possibility

  1871. to relocate

  1872. their families

  1873. to one of

  1874. the bigger

  1875. urban centers

  1876. leaving their

  1877. church unattending

  1878. during the

  1879. absence,

  1880. they don't

  1881. have that.

  1882. And on

  1883. the other

  1884. hand,

  1885. 82% of

  1886. pastors in

  1887. Paraguay

  1888. cannot live

  1889. with what

  1890. the church

  1891. pays them.

  1892. So they

  1893. have to

  1894. have jobs

  1895. besides

  1896. the church.

  1897. So that

  1898. is when we

  1899. founded the

  1900. Aquila and

  1901. Priscilla

  1902. Institute.

  1903. According to

  1904. Acts 18,

  1905. I like that

  1906. so much,

  1907. there came

  1908. this guy

  1909. Apollos who

  1910. was a

  1911. very good

  1912. speaker,

  1913. but he

  1914. had limited

  1915. knowledge.

  1916. And instead

  1917. of exposing

  1918. him before

  1919. the whole

  1920. church,

  1921. laughing about

  1922. him or

  1923. discussing

  1924. him and

  1925. saying,

  1926. you know,

  1927. this guy

  1928. is a good

  1929. speaker but

  1930. he doesn't

  1931. have any

  1932. knowledge,

  1933. you shouldn't

  1934. listen to

  1935. him.

  1936. It says

  1937. that Aquila

  1938. and Priscilla

  1939. took him

  1940. beside and

  1941. explained him

  1942. the way and

  1943. everything that

  1944. had happened

  1945. so far.

  1946. And with

  1947. that new

  1948. knowledge,

  1949. she got

  1950. sent out

  1951. to Corinth

  1952. and he

  1953. had a

  1954. very

  1955. successful

  1956. ministry

  1957. there,

  1958. so that

  1959. even the

  1960. church in

  1961. Corinth

  1962. later on

  1963. became

  1964. known that

  1965. someone said

  1966. they were

  1967. followers of

  1968. Apollos and

  1969. some of

  1970. Paul and

  1971. so on.

  1972. You know,

  1973. I mean,

  1974. he had

  1975. almost the

  1976. same impact

  1977. as Paul

  1978. there.

  1979. But I

  1980. like what

  1981. Aquila and

  1982. Priscilla did

  1983. and we

  1984. have them

  1985. together in

  1986. the Institute

  1987. because we

  1988. always want,

  1989. if a pastor

  1990. gets training,

  1991. that his

  1992. wife comes

  1993. with him

  1994. and gets

  1995. the same

  1996. training.

  1997. Or if

  1998. the woman

  1999. comes,

  2000. then her

  2001. husband

  2002. comes

  2003. also.

  2004. So we

  2005. have a

  2006. vision,

  2007. mission,

  2008. whatever you

  2009. need for

  2010. these things.

  2011. We would

  2012. like that

  2013. every pastor

  2014. in Paraguay

  2015. could have,

  2016. could get the

  2017. tools that he

  2018. needs to

  2019. lead a

  2020. church.

  2021. And that's

  2022. our vision,

  2023. that every

  2024. church in

  2025. Paraguay could

  2026. have at least

  2027. one person

  2028. equipped for

  2029. that task

  2030. to do.

  2031. So we

  2032. offer a

  2033. program of

  2034. 15 modular

  2035. courses that

  2036. each one of

  2037. those has

  2038. 16 hours and

  2039. is being

  2040. taught during

  2041. two months.

  2042. Normally we

  2043. gather pastors

  2044. of one place

  2045. on one

  2046. weekend and

  2047. give them

  2048. eight hours

  2049. of classes.

  2050. Next one,

  2051. same weekend,

  2052. so if it's

  2053. the third

  2054. weekend, it

  2055. will always be

  2056. the third

  2057. weekend so

  2058. that they

  2059. get into

  2060. a rhythm.

  2061. They get

  2062. the next

  2063. eight hours

  2064. and then they

  2065. complete one

  2066. course.

  2067. How did

  2068. we come

  2069. up with

  2070. these

  2071. courses?

  2072. Well, I

  2073. ran a

  2074. survey among

  2075. pastors and

  2076. they gave

  2077. me actually

  2078. over 70

  2079. teams, but

  2080. we got them

  2081. down to

  2082. 15.

  2083. And so we

  2084. are teaching

  2085. things that

  2086. are not in

  2087. any seminary,

  2088. for instance,

  2089. the pastor

  2090. and the law.

  2091. Many pastors

  2092. don't know

  2093. anything about

  2094. the laws in

  2095. our country,

  2096. so they can

  2097. get in trouble

  2098. because they

  2099. know many

  2100. secrets of

  2101. their members.

  2102. And if

  2103. they don't

  2104. report certain

  2105. things,

  2106. to the

  2107. authorities,

  2108. then they

  2109. can end up

  2110. in jail as

  2111. well.

  2112. For instance,

  2113. so I

  2114. show you

  2115. some pictures

  2116. that on the

  2117. left is our

  2118. biggest prison

  2119. in Paraguay,

  2120. has 4,000

  2121. inmates.

  2122. We have a

  2123. church there,

  2124. we have

  2125. classes there,

  2126. sometimes we

  2127. have them

  2128. under a tree,

  2129. some because

  2130. it's too hot

  2131. in the church.

  2132. There are

  2133. some places

  2134. where we can

  2135. only go with

  2136. the airplane

  2137. because there

  2138. are no roads.

  2139. Of course,

  2140. we don't have

  2141. an airplane and

  2142. we can't pay

  2143. an airplane,

  2144. so we have

  2145. to ask

  2146. businesses or

  2147. big cattle

  2148. ranchers if

  2149. they can

  2150. give us for

  2151. free a ride.

  2152. And it's

  2153. not always

  2154. easy because

  2155. in that part

  2156. of the country

  2157. where we have

  2158. to go,

  2159. there are

  2160. lots of

  2161. other airplanes

  2162. that transport

  2163. all our

  2164. stuff,

  2165. especially at

  2166. night.

  2167. So no one

  2168. wants to be

  2169. in the wrong

  2170. list.

  2171. they don't

  2172. want to be

  2173. in the list

  2174. of the

  2175. government

  2176. or the

  2177. Paraguayan

  2178. DEA,

  2179. they don't

  2180. want to be

  2181. in the list

  2182. of some

  2183. of the

  2184. competing

  2185. drug bosses

  2186. there.

  2187. So you

  2188. have to

  2189. figure out

  2190. stuff like

  2191. that.

  2192. Sometimes you

  2193. have nicer

  2194. classrooms,

  2195. as I said,

  2196. sometimes you

  2197. do it

  2198. outside.

  2199. After

  2200. three years,

  2201. those that

  2202. participate

  2203. and stick

  2204. to it

  2205. for three

  2206. years,

  2207. at least

  2208. 12 of

  2209. those 15

  2210. courses,

  2211. they get

  2212. a graduation.

  2213. And to

  2214. pretend to

  2215. be humble,

  2216. I only

  2217. put a

  2218. picture of

  2219. the smallest

  2220. graduation

  2221. that we

  2222. had,

  2223. with three

  2224. persons.

  2225. But of

  2226. course,

  2227. it's much

  2228. nicer if

  2229. you have a

  2230. graduation

  2231. with 26

  2232. people,

  2233. and so that

  2234. means that

  2235. they all,

  2236. because

  2237. perseverance

  2238. is not

  2239. a virtue

  2240. in Paraguay.

  2241. It's very

  2242. hard to

  2243. continue for

  2244. more than

  2245. one year

  2246. in any

  2247. program.

  2248. Where are

  2249. we now?

  2250. At the

  2251. Akila and

  2252. Priscilla

  2253. Institute.

  2254. Until last

  2255. year,

  2256. we had

  2257. established

  2258. 33

  2259. training

  2260. centers.

  2261. That means

  2262. where pastors

  2263. gather once

  2264. a month.

  2265. In less

  2266. than seven

  2267. years,

  2268. it will be

  2269. seven years

  2270. now,

  2271. in May,

  2272. we have

  2273. trained

  2274. almost 1,200

  2275. church

  2276. workers,

  2277. I call

  2278. them,

  2279. because not

  2280. all of

  2281. them are

  2282. pastors,

  2283. church

  2284. leaders.

  2285. The only

  2286. requirement

  2287. that we

  2288. have is

  2289. that they

  2290. work

  2291. at the

  2292. church,

  2293. that they

  2294. have a

  2295. ministry

  2296. in church.

  2297. We don't

  2298. want to

  2299. have any

  2300. tourists

  2301. there.

  2302. Only people

  2303. that really

  2304. are working

  2305. at church,

  2306. including their

  2307. spouses,

  2308. have been

  2309. trained at

  2310. the Akila

  2311. and Priscilla

  2312. Institute.

  2313. And we

  2314. all know

  2315. this verse

  2316. in 2 Timothy,

  2317. two things

  2318. you have

  2319. heard me

  2320. say in

  2321. the presence

  2322. of many

  2323. witnesses

  2324. and trust

  2325. reliable

  2326. people.

  2327. That's what

  2328. we try to

  2329. do with

  2330. where do

  2331. we get

  2332. our

  2333. teachers

  2334. from.

  2335. We have

  2336. 47

  2337. teachers

  2338. at this

  2339. point

  2340. and most

  2341. of them

  2342. were my

  2343. students

  2344. at the

  2345. seminary.

  2346. So once

  2347. they get

  2348. graduated,

  2349. I invite

  2350. them to

  2351. become

  2352. teachers

  2353. themselves,

  2354. two pastors

  2355. and other

  2356. people who

  2357. never had

  2358. the chance

  2359. that they

  2360. had to

  2361. go to

  2362. an

  2363. accredited

  2364. Bible

  2365. school.

  2366. So we

  2367. will skip

  2368. this.

  2369. Just to

  2370. show you

  2371. there's

  2372. an

  2373. economical

  2374. reason

  2375. for doing

  2376. this as

  2377. well.

  2378. This is

  2379. what I

  2380. try to

  2381. show our

  2382. church

  2383. leaders.

  2384. The

  2385. yearly

  2386. cost of

  2387. college

  2388. education

  2389. in

  2390. Paraguay

  2391. is

  2392. $5,000.

  2393. So if

  2394. you consider

  2395. that for

  2396. your kids,

  2397. you know,

  2398. if you

  2399. want to

  2400. save big,

  2401. you can

  2402. send your

  2403. kids to

  2404. Paraguay.

  2405. This

  2406. includes

  2407. room and

  2408. board and

  2409. everything.

  2410. $5,000.

  2411. But

  2412. training a

  2413. pastor who

  2414. is already

  2415. in the

  2416. field,

  2417. it takes

  2418. only $400

  2419. for a

  2420. whole year.

  2421. So the

  2422. total cost

  2423. of producing

  2424. an

  2425. official

  2426. pastor is

  2427. $20,000

  2428. compared to

  2429. $1,200

  2430. for one

  2431. that is

  2432. already there

  2433. at the

  2434. church and

  2435. we know

  2436. that will

  2437. be a

  2438. pastor because

  2439. unfortunately

  2440. we also

  2441. know that

  2442. from all

  2443. the graduates

  2444. of our

  2445. school of

  2446. theology,

  2447. which at

  2448. this point

  2449. is part

  2450. of the

  2451. evangelical

  2452. university,

  2453. so it

  2454. has at

  2455. least

  2456. college

  2457. level

  2458. degree,

  2459. only four

  2460. from our

  2461. graduates go

  2462. into full

  2463. time ministry,

  2464. so in

  2465. the other

  2466. case,

  2467. in Akila and

  2468. Priscilla,

  2469. we know

  2470. everyone is

  2471. already working

  2472. there,

  2473. so down

  2474. there it's

  2475. just 100%,

  2476. 6% is the

  2477. cost of the

  2478. Akila and

  2479. Priscilla Institute

  2480. from the

  2481. other ones.

  2482. thank you.

  2483. We have

  2484. seven minutes

  2485. for questions

  2486. and sorry

  2487. Greg asked

  2488. me to leave

  2489. ten minutes

  2490. but we

  2491. have seven

  2492. minutes for

  2493. that you can

  2494. share something

  2495. how God

  2496. spoke to

  2497. you or

  2498. that if you

  2499. have any

  2500. questions about

  2501. our ministry,

  2502. what we are

  2503. doing, I'm

  2504. still teaching

  2505. at the

  2506. seminary, I

  2507. never left

  2508. it, I

  2509. think that

  2510. God allowed

  2511. me to get

  2512. an education

  2513. so that I

  2514. can prepare

  2515. other people

  2516. and so my

  2517. life is like

  2518. this, during

  2519. the week I'm

  2520. doing high

  2521. theology, at

  2522. least in

  2523. Paraguayan

  2524. context and

  2525. for the

  2526. weekend we

  2527. shift two

  2528. gears down

  2529. because in

  2530. Paraguay we

  2531. drive shift,

  2532. stick shift,

  2533. you know,

  2534. we shift

  2535. down, so

  2536. then we go

  2537. grassroots level

  2538. with the

  2539. people and

  2540. it's very,

  2541. I thank God

  2542. for giving me

  2543. that opportunity,

  2544. it's just

  2545. great, especially

  2546. if you, after

  2547. eight hours of

  2548. teaching you

  2549. want to go

  2550. home and

  2551. the pastor

  2552. says wait,

  2553. wait, wait,

  2554. I still have

  2555. a question,

  2556. you know, and

  2557. at the

  2558. seminary once

  2559. it comes at

  2560. 12 in the

  2561. morning when

  2562. it's lunch

  2563. time, you

  2564. know, everybody

  2565. is packing

  2566. up and you

  2567. try to teach

  2568. something but

  2569. no one is

  2570. listening because

  2571. they are hungry,

  2572. you know,

  2573. hungry for

  2574. other stuff,

  2575. so.

  2576. Any comments?

  2577. How does God

  2578. speak to you

  2579. when you

  2580. pray?

  2581. So are you

  2582. employed by

  2583. the seminary

  2584. to do this

  2585. project?

  2586. No, the

  2587. seminary employs

  2588. me to teach

  2589. at the

  2590. seminary, I

  2591. am employed

  2592. by this

  2593. independent

  2594. ministry, which

  2595. in Spanish is

  2596. called Jesus

  2597. Responde al

  2598. Mundo de Hoy,

  2599. Jesus Answers

  2600. the World

  2601. Today.

  2602. It is an

  2603. independent

  2604. ministry that

  2605. owns the

  2606. Aquila and

  2607. Priscilla

  2608. Institute.

  2609. And is

  2610. that run

  2611. by a board

  2612. of pastors

  2613. or just

  2614. by you?

  2615. No, it's

  2616. a board

  2617. of pastors

  2618. is for

  2619. the foundation,

  2620. for the

  2621. ministry.

  2622. Yeah.

  2623. The school

  2624. is pretty

  2625. much, I'm

  2626. the director

  2627. and so no

  2628. one, problem

  2629. is I'm on the

  2630. whole organization,

  2631. I'm the only

  2632. guy with a

  2633. PhD, so no

  2634. one wants to

  2635. tell me how

  2636. to do it.

  2637. They're all

  2638. too respectful.

  2639. I will need

  2640. some people

  2641. who would

  2642. say, Martin,

  2643. we need to

  2644. do it that

  2645. way or so.

  2646. And how

  2647. many are

  2648. So until

  2649. now I depend

  2650. on the

  2651. Holy Spirit

  2652. and my

  2653. wife.

  2654. How many

  2655. are on

  2656. your board?

  2657. Six people.

  2658. And do

  2659. they come

  2660. from different

  2661. denominations?

  2662. Yeah.

  2663. Yeah.

  2664. That is the

  2665. thing, the

  2666. ministry is

  2667. interdenominational

  2668. while the

  2669. Bible school

  2670. belongs only to

  2671. one denomination.

  2672. So that's, I

  2673. think that's why

  2674. we have so

  2675. many open

  2676. doors.

  2677. Among our

  2678. students, they

  2679. are from all

  2680. over, they're

  2681. Pentecostals to

  2682. Catholics.

  2683. So how do

  2684. you deal with

  2685. interminational

  2686. theological

  2687. differences?

  2688. We don't.

  2689. Now we

  2690. are, mostly

  2691. it's just

  2692. practical stuff,

  2693. how to preach,

  2694. how to interpret

  2695. the Bible,

  2696. I mean, of

  2697. course, you

  2698. know, how

  2699. you interpret

  2700. the Bible

  2701. feeds into

  2702. what you

  2703. believe later

  2704. on, yeah?

  2705. But how to

  2706. handle finances

  2707. at the church,

  2708. your own

  2709. finances, how

  2710. to have your

  2711. family, a

  2712. Christian family,

  2713. pastoral

  2714. family, pastoral

  2715. counseling, and

  2716. many of these

  2717. things.

  2718. Yeah.

  2719. Yeah.

  2720. Yeah.

  2721. I stepped

  2722. out for a

  2723. moment, and I

  2724. think I

  2725. missed at least

  2726. one of the

  2727. ways God

  2728. answers prayer,

  2729. but one of

  2730. yours, while

  2731. praying, a

  2732. strong impression.

  2733. Can you

  2734. repeat that?

  2735. One?

  2736. One way I

  2737. believe God

  2738. speaks to me.

  2739. Yeah.

  2740. is that while

  2741. I'm praying,

  2742. not hearing a

  2743. voice, not

  2744. seeing a vision,

  2745. but having a

  2746. strong impression

  2747. that's almost

  2748. like somebody

  2749. speaking to

  2750. you.

  2751. I used to

  2752. pray a lot,

  2753. Lord, show

  2754. me what to

  2755. do, and

  2756. then hurry

  2757. off and do

  2758. something else,

  2759. and not think

  2760. about it again.

  2761. Yeah.

  2762. Of late, I

  2763. feel like

  2764. God, if I

  2765. listen for a

  2766. while, that

  2767. sometimes it

  2768. gives me a

  2769. strong impression

  2770. which, for

  2771. me, seems

  2772. like a clear

  2773. message.

  2774. Yeah.

  2775. from the

  2776. Lord, including

  2777. a while ago,

  2778. Matt, do you

  2779. really love the

  2780. person you're

  2781. praying about

  2782. right now?

  2783. Or do you

  2784. just want to

  2785. go away and

  2786. go to hell?

  2787. And so

  2788. God changed

  2789. my heart, and

  2790. he just called

  2791. me through

  2792. the Sunday

  2793. school class.

  2794. He's coming

  2795. to the church

  2796. this morning.

  2797. Thank you,

  2798. Lord.

  2799. Amen.

  2800. Yeah,

  2801. I would

  2802. describe it as

  2803. a thought that

  2804. I know doesn't

  2805. hold me.

  2806. Okay.

  2807. Yeah.

  2808. So, it

  2809. may even be

  2810. an interruption

  2811. or an

  2812. antithetical

  2813. thought.

  2814. So, a

  2815. friend who

  2816. was praying

  2817. that God

  2818. would change

  2819. her husband,

  2820. and God

  2821. said, he's

  2822. not the

  2823. problem.

  2824. You know,

  2825. so this was

  2826. an interruption

  2827. in her thoughts

  2828. because she

  2829. was grinding

  2830. her eyes

  2831. was false.

  2832. and God

  2833. said, he's

  2834. not the

  2835. problem.

  2836. So, I

  2837. think sometimes

  2838. when God

  2839. speaks to

  2840. us, it's

  2841. in that

  2842. different

  2843. thought, a

  2844. thought that

  2845. obviously isn't

  2846. coming from

  2847. us, and

  2848. it's consistent

  2849. with Scripture,

  2850. so you know

  2851. it's God.

  2852. Yeah, yeah.

  2853. And it's

  2854. short and to

  2855. the point,

  2856. isn't it?

  2857. Yeah, yeah.

  2858. Yeah.

  2859. You know,

  2860. James said that

  2861. the wisdom

  2862. from above is

  2863. peaceful, and

  2864. it's gentle, and

  2865. it's easy to be

  2866. entreated or

  2867. applied, and

  2868. it's sown in

  2869. peace by those

  2870. who make

  2871. peace.

  2872. And so, when

  2873. God speaks to

  2874. us normally, it

  2875. makes sense, and

  2876. it has a

  2877. peacefulness about

  2878. it, you know.

  2879. And yeah, if

  2880. the Lord asks

  2881. you, do you

  2882. really love this

  2883. person you're

  2884. praying for?

  2885. That's definitely

  2886. God.

  2887. Right.

  2888. Right.

  2889. Okay.

  2890. Someone else?

  2891. Doesn't the

  2892. fact that you're

  2893. praying for

  2894. somebody necessarily

  2895. mean you have

  2896. some love for

  2897. them?

  2898. Not always

  2899. very much.

  2900. Yeah.

  2901. Yeah.

  2902. Sometimes praying

  2903. almost out of

  2904. guilt, okay, now

  2905. I've done it, I

  2906. don't have to do

  2907. anymore.

  2908. You may have to

  2909. be really sinful

  2910. to be like that,

  2911. but you're

  2912. right.

  2913. Or worse, we

  2914. have neighbors who

  2915. always have very

  2916. loud music, especially

  2917. on the weekends.

  2918. I have prayed a

  2919. lot for them, but

  2920. not out of love.

  2921. Yeah.

  2922. Well, we have to

  2923. get up to the

  2924. main...

  2925. Yeah.

  2926. Yeah.

  2927. Because I think

  2928. this might really

  2929. be helpful.

  2930. One day I was

  2931. praying to, and

  2932. the Lord said to

  2933. me, the person

  2934. that you see when

  2935. you're praying is

  2936. you.

  2937. And I said,

  2938. what do you

  2939. mean?

  2940. He says, well,

  2941. when you're happy,

  2942. you see me as

  2943. being happy with

  2944. you.

  2945. And when you're

  2946. upset, you see

  2947. me as being

  2948. upset with you.

  2949. You're really

  2950. just seeing

  2951. yourself.

  2952. And I went,

  2953. wow, that's

  2954. true.

  2955. Because Scripture

  2956. is what describes

  2957. how God feels

  2958. about us.

  2959. And it's not

  2960. that harsh person

  2961. that we tend

  2962. to be.

  2963. That's my phone.

  2964. Oh.

  2965. Like mine.

  2966. Take it,

  2967. my phone went.

  2968. Anyway, yeah,

  2969. hopefully that's

  2970. helpful.

  2971. Well, thank you,

  2972. Martin.

  2973. Martin and his

  2974. family are staying

  2975. at the Overseas

  2976. Ministry Study

  2977. Center this year,

  2978. so they'll be

  2979. here until June,

  2980. is that right?

  2981. And it may be

  2982. beginning of June.

  2983. So I encourage

  2984. you to get to

  2985. know them,

  2986. spend time with

  2987. them over the

  2988. next few months

  2989. if you have an

  2990. opportunity to do

  2991. that.

  2992. Let's close in

  2993. prayer.

  2994. Father, thank you

  2995. for the ways that

  2996. you hear and answer

  2997. our prayers, Lord.

  2998. Thank you for the

  2999. ways that you guide

3000. us and lead us in

  3001. the ways that we

  3002. should go.

  3003. Lord, we pray

  3004. this morning that

  3005. we would fix our

  3006. eyes on Jesus,

  3007. the author and

  3008. finisher of our

  3009. faith, and that

  3010. we'd be encouraged

  3011. to run the race

  3012. that you have set

  3013. before us with

  3014. perseverance and

  3015. endurance.

  3016. We pray for the

  3017. Aquila and Priscilla

  3018. Institute.

  3019. We pray, Lord,

  3020. that you would

  3021. continue to

  3022. strengthen the

  3023. pastors and church

  3024. leaders and their

  3025. spouses and families

  3026. in Paraguay.

  3027. Lord, that your

  3028. church would be

  3029. founded upon the

  3030. solid rock of

  3031. faith in Jesus

  3032. Christ and the

  3033. word of God, and

  3034. that it would be

  3035. empowered by your

  3036. Holy Spirit and

  3037. directed in the

  3038. ways of righteousness

  3039. and truth and

  3040. peace.

  3041. Lord, we pray that

  3042. you would strengthen

  3043. and guide Martin and

  3044. Betty, and we pray

  3045. for their time here

  3046. in Connecticut, in the

  3047. United States, that it

  3048. would be refreshing to

  3049. them, and that you

  3050. would give them wisdom

3051. for the next steps that

3052. are ahead of them when

  3053. they return.

3054. We pray these things in

  3055. Jesus' name, amen.

  3056. Amen.
