  1. Well, good morning.

  2. Good morning.

  3. Because of those things, it is more important than ever for us to actually read the Bible itself and to hear what Jesus has to say to us about these things.

  4. As you know, at Trinity here, we preach through sections of Scripture.

  5. And one of the reasons we do it is because it brings us to these topics that we might feel uncomfortable choosing.

  6. But when we get to them, we now allow God to speak into our lives as God's Word wants to.

  7. And so we are doing that this morning.

  8. Last week, we did the end of chapter 11 and the beginning of 12 of the book of Luke.

  9. And so we are going to continue on.

  10. On the road of discipleship with Jesus.

  11. And this is what we're...

  12. What does it mean to follow Him?

  13. As Jesus is heading towards Jerusalem, heading towards His crucifixion and resurrection,

  14. heading towards the accomplishment of the purpose for which He came, the salvation of the world.

  15. He is teaching His disciples, spending this traveling journey, teaching them what does it mean to know Him and to follow Him.

  16. And so we're going to talk this morning about our relationship to money and wealth.

  17. I don't know if you watch the Super Bowl.

  18. My guess is there will be one of these.

  19. I don't know.

  20. But the Super Bowl commercials are always a big thing.

  21. And there's a commercial that's been out for a while by a company named ING.

  22. And its tagline is, what's your number?

  23. And you see a guy walking down the street and he's got this big six or seven digit orange number under his arm.

  24. And then there's someone else.

  25. A woman rides by on her bicycle and she's got her number on her back.

  26. And there's one where there's a guy clipping his head and he's got a number.

  27. And this is a gazillion because he has no idea what his number is.

  28. And his neighbor comes up and says, how are you going to plan for that?

  29. And the upshot of the commercial is that for you to plan for your retirement, ING can help you do that well.

  30. And in order to do that, you have to know your number to have enough to retire.

  31. And they want to help you to do that.

  32. What's your number?

  33. Underlying it is a question that we all need to ask ourselves, which is, what are we investing our lives, including our money, in?

  34. What are we investing our lives, including our money, for?

  35. ING says your goal should be a successful, comfortable, and financially secure retirement.

  36. What does Jesus have to say about that question?

  37. So let's look at this passage together.

  38. And hopefully we'll get some answers to that question before we go.

  39. So Luke chapter 12, it's page 818 in your Pew Bible if you're following along.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  40. Luke chapter 12, starting in verse 13 and going to verse 34.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  41. So let's read this together and then we'll pray and then we'll continue.

  42. And he said to them,

  43. And he told them a parable saying,

  44. The land of a rich man produced plentifully.

  45. And he thought to himself,

  46. What shall I do?

  47. For I have nowhere to store my crops.

  48. And he said,

  49. I will do this.

  50. I will tear down my barns and build larger ones.

  51. And there I will store all my grain and my goods.

  52. And I will say to my soul,

  53. Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years.

  54. Relax, eat, drink, be merry.

  55. But God said to him,

  56. Fool, this very night your soul is required of you.

  57. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?

  58. So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich towards God.

  59. And he said to his disciples,

  60. Therefore, I tell you,

  61. Do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat,

  62. nor about your body, what will you put on.

  63. For life is more than food and the body is more than clothing.

  64. Consider the ravens.

  65. They neither sow nor reap.

  66. They have neither storehouse nor barn.

  67. Yet God feeds them.

  68. Of how much more value are you than the birds?

  69. And which of you, by being anxious, can add a single hour to his span of life?

  70. If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that,

  71. why are you anxious about the rest?

  72. Consider the lilies, how they grow.

  73. They neither toil nor spin.

  74. Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

  75. But if God so clothes the grass,

  76. which is alive in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

  77. how much more will he clothe you,

  78. O you of little faith?

  79. Do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink,

  80. nor be worried.

  81. For all the nations of the world seek after these things,

  82. and your Father knows that you need them.

  83. Instead, seek his kingdom,

  84. and these things will be added to you.

  85. Fear not, little flock,

  86. for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

  87. Sell your possessions and give to the needy.

  88. Provide yourselves with money bags that do not grow old,

  89. with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail,

  90. where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.

  91. For where your treasure is,

  92. there will your heart be also.

  93. So, let's pray.

  94. Lord, we thank you for this word.

  95. Lord, we thank you that you speak to us

  96. so that we might know what it means to know you,

  97. and we might know what it means to live in a relationship with you.

  98. Lord, I ask this morning for your Holy Spirit to be at work in us

  99. as we look into your word together.

  100. Lord, may the truth of your word be plain.

  101. Will you apply it to our lives?

  102. Lord, will you change our hearts,

  103. and will you move our limbs to action?

  104. Lord, that we might be not only hearers of the word,

  105. but doers also.

  106. For your glory, we pray in Jesus' name.

  107. Amen.

  108. Amen.

  109. So, in this passage,

  110. Jesus gives us both warnings

  111. about how we ought not to relate to our possessions and our money,

  112. and then he gives us a new way to live,

  113. a different direction to go in how we think about this.

  114. So, that's how we're going to look at it.

  115. The warnings are in verses 13 through 30.

  116. The new way is in 30 to 34.

  117. So, we're going to look at this in

  118. and work our way through this passage together.

  119. So, first, Jesus' warnings to us

  120. to avoid greedy and grasping hearts.

  121. In the setup of this story,

  122. Jesus is publicly teaching,

  123. and there's a voice from the crowd.

  124. It's fascinating.

  125. This is a completely anonymous guy who says,

  126. Hey, Jesus, will you tell my brother

  127. that he needs to give me my share?

  128. And it's not even clear whether it's his share

  129. or whether this guy is just wanting more than he actually deserves.

  130. But whatever the request is,

  131. this guy is looking for Jesus

  132. to give this public intervention about it,

  133. about money.

  134. And, you know, it's so interesting to think

  135. that we wouldn't ever be the kind of grasping person

  136. who would put someone on the spot

  137. in a public forum

  138. to adjudicate for us

  139. against someone else

  140. in matters of money.

  141. We would like to think

  142. that we're generally generous people,

  143. that we would actually think

  144. that, you know,

  145. we wouldn't put someone

  146. in this position.

  147. If you were here last week,

  148. you heard Pastor Greg mention briefly

  149. in his sermon

  150. as the passage last week

  151. talked on generosity.

  152. That our culture has a problem

  153. and that our human hearts

  154. have a problem with thinking

  155. that we're more generous

  156. than we think we are.

  157. So, as Greg reported,

  158. I'm just going to report these again

  159. so you can remember them.

  160. 70% of millennials say

  161. that they're very or somewhat generous

  162. in 2016.

  163. But the same survey said

  164. that 84% of them

  165. reported giving away

  166. $50 or less

  167. during that same year

  168. that they were being very generous.

  169. Another way to think about it

  170. is that America is perhaps

  171. the wealthiest nation in the world

  172. and yet Americans today

  173. give away broadly

  174. 3% of our income.

  175. Not only is that not a lot

  176. on an absolute standard,

  177. but it was less than

  178. what people were giving away

  179. during the Great Depression

  180. when people were in serious need.

  181. I bring these up

  182. just to say that

  183. in our human hearts,

  184. it's easy for us to think

  185. that we're going to be okay

  186. about money

  187. and we don't need to hear

  188. a warning about being greedy,

  189. but in fact,

  190. we often do.

  191. Pastor Orly,

  192. it is remarkable

  193. how many stories I hear

  194. about how many families

  195. squabble and fight

  196. about inheritances

  197. and how much money they get.

  198. That's just an anecdotal observation.

  199. Many of you are not there yet.

  200. Bob's nodding.

  201. He's a lawyer.

  202. He gets it.

  203. But when you get there,

  204. you feel the pull on your heart

  205. in ways that you never knew

  206. would be there.

  207. And Jesus says,

  208. beware,

  209. beware of the impulse

  210. of your heart

  211. to be greedy.

  212. And he gives two reasons.

  213. And the first one,

  214. he tells us in verse 15

  215. and then he gives us

  216. a parable to illustrate it.

  217. The first reason why

  218. we ought not to be greedy

  219. is because life is not found

  220. in things that are temporal

  221. and passing.

  222. That's what he says

  223. at the end of verse 15

  224. and then he goes on

  225. and tells this story,

  226. this well-known story

  227. about a rich man,

  228. a rich man whose land

  229. has produced for him

  230. an abundant crop

  231. and he doesn't have

  232. the resources to,

  233. he doesn't have

  234. the buildings

  235. to store all of these goods.

  236. And if you're a businessman

  237. sitting out there,

  238. you might be thinking,

  239. what's wrong with that?

  240. His business is expanding.

  241. He's just increasing

  242. his operations

  243. so that he can continue

  244. to grow.

  245. And at one level,

  246. that's right.

  247. Because in the sense that

  248. there is no condemnation

  249. of this man

  250. having gotten this wealth

  251. in an ill-gotten way.

  252. He didn't do this deceitfully

  253. or manipulatively.

  254. He simply was prosperous.

  255. But you see that

  256. as the story goes on,

  257. this man's heart

  258. in relationship

  259. to his possessions

  260. was not right.

  261. You see,

  262. if you look in verses

  263. 17 through 19,

  264. the personal pronouns,

  265. I, me, and myself,

  266. or self,

  267. are used 12 times.

  268. And at the end,

  269. you see what his goal is.

  270. Soul, you now have

  271. all that you need.

  272. Eat, drink,

  273. and be merry,

  274. and relax.

  275. The underlying message

  276. of this man's heart was,

  277. when you have enough,

  278. now you have security.

  279. Now you have comfort.

  280. Now you have satisfaction.

  281. Now you have peace.

  282. It was not in the having

  283. of these things,

  284. but in the way

  285. that he valued them

  286. that was his downfall,

  287. says one commentator.

  288. And God intervenes

  289. at the end of the story

  290. and says,

  291. Fool,

  292. tonight your life

  293. is taken from you.

  294. You've gathered

  295. all this stuff

  296. for what?

  297. Because now you

  298. have died.

  299. And who's,

  300. who will get

  301. all this stuff?

  302. It doesn't matter

  303. to you, does it?

  304. Because you don't

  305. get any of it.

  306. And you have said,

  307. this is what my life

  308. is about.

  309. So Jesus finishes

  310. this parable

  311. in verse 21.

  312. So is the one

  313. who lays up

  314. treasure for himself.

  315. That is,

  316. that one is a fool

  317. who will recognize

  318. that the transience

  319. of life means

  320. that the possessions

  321. that they have

  322. cannot be the substance,

  323. the goal

  324. of meaningful investment

  325. in their lives.

  326. And Jesus points ahead

  327. to what we'll see

  328. at the end

  329. of this section

  330. when he says,

  331. and is not rich

  332. towards God.

  333. Jesus is tipping

  334. his hand saying,

  335. that's where we're going.

  336. There's a different

  337. kind of riches.

  338. There's a different

  339. kind of investment.

  340. There's a different

  341. kind of goal

  342. for you.

  343. Being rich

  344. towards God.

  345. Jesus then continues.

  346. If the first one is,

  347. you ought not to

  348. fall prey

  349. to greed

  350. because

  351. when you are greedy,

  352. you're setting

  353. your hearts on things

  354. that will never be able

  355. to do what you think

  356. it will.

  357. Your possessions

  358. are passing.

  359. Your money is fleeting.

  360. Your life is eternal.

  361. The second one

  362. is he says,

  363. don't spend your life

  364. grasping

  365. for material possessions.

  366. And I'm using

  367. grasping as a word

  368. you see in your text.

  369. The word is seek.

  370. That's,

  371. and I'm translating

  372. that grasping

  373. because I think

  374. this seeking

  375. has this all-consuming

  376. sort of fixation,

  377. obsessive

  378. approach

  379. to gaining

  380. these things

  381. when Jesus uses us

  382. in this section.

  383. And then he walks

  384. through this passage

  385. which you probably

  386. hear all the echoes

  387. of it.

  388. It's very similar

  389. to part of what

  390. Jesus does in Matthew

  391. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  392. It's a little different

  393. and so I want to let

  394. the way that

  395. Luke records it

  396. to speak as it does.

  397. He walks through

  398. and he reveals

  399. our heart attitudes

  400. towards

  401. are we those

  402. who are grasping?

  403. He says,

  404. don't be those

  405. who are grasping

  406. but instead

  407. recognize who God

  408. is for you.

  409. How does he do that?

  410. Well,

  411. look with me

  412. in verse 21.

  413. Don't be anxious

  414. about your life,

  415. what you will eat,

  416. about your body,

  417. what you will put on.

  418. Now look,

  419. here's what I want to say.

  420. How many of you,

  421. when you think

  422. about anxiety,

  423. think about those

  424. particular categories.

  425. Do I have enough food?

  426. Do I have clothes to wear?

  427. Some of you,

  428. that's real.

  429. For some of you,

  430. that's true

  431. and that is a concern

  432. that you have today

  433. that is real.

  434. For many of us,

  435. the anxieties

  436. that we have

  437. don't even touch

  438. on these most basic

  439. of human needs,

  440. do they?

  441. Our anxieties

  442. about things

  443. that are much less

  444. basic to human life.

  445. But Jesus says,

  446. don't be anxious

  447. even about the most

  448. basic of things

  449. in life.

  450. Now,

  451. he's not saying,

  452. let's clarify this,

  453. we need to make sure

  454. we clear the decks

  455. a little bit.

  456. He's not saying,

  457. don't be thoughtfully

  458. responsible

  459. before God

  460. about these things.

  461. There is,

  462. throughout Scripture,

  463. a clear picture

  464. of stewardship

  465. and responsibility

  466. of working hard

  467. and of providing

  468. for others.

  469. There's all sorts

  470. of things

  471. that are in there

  472. that we need

  473. to make sure

  474. that we don't neglect

  475. when we read

  476. a passage like this.

  477. But the passage here

  478. is talking about

  479. our heart.

  480. Are you consumed

  481. with fear today

  482. that you won't have

  483. what you think

  484. you need?

  485. Are you dominated

  486. and controlled

  487. by the uncertainty

  488. that is

  489. filling your life today

  490. because of those things?

  491. Jesus says,

  492. look,

  493. your life

  494. is more

  495. than those things.

  496. And then he gives

  497. an example

  498. of the ravens.

  499. And the ravens

  500. were sort of like

  501. seagulls

  502. or like common pigeons.

  503. They were flying rats

  504. with wings, right?

  505. They were the lowest

  506. of the low.

  507. And what Jesus

  508. is saying,

  509. he uses these

  510. very common,

  511. even detested animals

  512. to say,

  513. if God provides

  514. for even them,

  515. don't you think

  516. he will care for you?

  517. And then he goes on

  518. and he's piling on

  519. these rhetorical questions.

  520. Can you add anything

  521. to your life,

  522. to your lifespan?

  523. Can you live

  524. just a little bit longer

  525. by being anxious?

  526. And of course,

  527. that's ridiculous.

  528. Today we know

  529. anxiety is one of the reasons

  530. why we live shorter lives,

  531. right?

  532. It causes hypertension,

  533. it causes stress,

  534. it drives us

  535. in extremes

  536. to suicide.

  537. Anxiety is a terrible thing

  538. in our lives

  539. and we know that.

  540. And Jesus is saying,

  541. yeah,

  542. and well,

  543. how good is it?

  544. How much profit

  545. do you have

  546. in being anxious?

  547. He says,

  548. if you can't even

  549. add one little moment

  550. to your life

  551. by being anxious,

  552. why do you think

  553. it's worth being anxious

  554. about these other things?

  555. And then he turns

  556. and he says,

  557. consider,

  558. consider the flowers

  559. of the field,

  560. the lilies.

  561. They don't work,

  562. they simply are.

  563. They do what God

  564. designed them to do.

  565. They don't toil

  566. nor spin,

  567. they don't labor,

  568. they don't create

  569. their own clothing

  570. and yet God

  571. has clothed them

  572. in a splendor

  573. that is more majestic

  574. than even Solomon.

  575. I was trying to think,

  576. is there today

  577. an analogy

  578. to who Solomon is?

  579. I'm sure there probably

  580. is in the fashion world

  581. but I'm just too ignorant

  582. to know it.

  583. But someone who is,

  584. you know,

  585. Lady Gaga,

  586. right,

  587. who is displayed

  588. in the most amazing

  589. and without,

  590. golly,

  591. that was an off-the-cuff

  592. illustration

  593. that really went badly,

  594. didn't it?

  595. anyway,

  596. the people

  597. who have

  598. the brightest,

  599. the most abundant

  600. of the glorious

  601. clothing in the world.

  602. God gives

  603. to this lily

  604. more

  605. than the greatest

  606. human being

  607. has achieved

  608. on their own.

  609. and they're passing.

  610. The lilies

  611. are here today

  612. and gone tomorrow.

  613. You're living

  614. in the image

  615. of God.

  616. Don't you think

  617. God

  618. will care

  619. for you?

  620. And then

  621. as we're working

  622. through the passage,

  623. verse 30,

  624. he says,

  625. for all the nations

  626. of the world,

  627. and when he uses

  628. that phrase,

  629. he means

  630. all the people

  631. who don't know

  632. the God of the universe,

  633. the God of the Bible,

  634. the way you do,

  635. and all the nations

  636. of the world

  637. seek after these things.

  638. That is,

  639. they grasp

  640. and strive

  641. and are consumed

  642. by getting

  643. these things.

  644. And your heavenly

  645. Father knows

  646. that you need them.

  647. And this is where

  648. he turns

  649. and he points

  650. you to God.

  651. He points us

  652. to God.

  653. He says,

  654. don't you know

  655. the God

  656. who made the universe

  657. is a heavenly Father

  658. who knows

  659. what you need.

  660. Every parent

  661. thinks about this.

  662. How do I provide

  663. for my kids

  664. the things

  665. that they need?

  666. Every parent

  667. cares about that.

  668. Whether they're able

  669. to do what they want

  670. to do or not,

  671. every parent

  672. knows this.

  673. Jesus says,

  674. you have a heavenly Father

  675. and he knows

  676. what you need.

  677. He cares about you

  678. more than the natural world.

  679. Jesus says,

  680. an anxious heart

  681. is consumed

  682. by worry,

  683. not consumed

  684. by trusting

  685. God.

  686. Now,

  687. just stop

  688. and think.

  689. how do we know

  690. if we are anxious?

  691. How do we know

  692. if we are worried?

  693. Maybe it's not that hard.

  694. Maybe you're already thinking

  695. and the wheels are spinning.

  696. But what if you lost

  697. X tomorrow?

  698. I saw last week

  699. there was this fire

  700. in the Newark

  701. airport terminal.

  702. 17 cars

  703. just burned

  704. to ashes.

  705. Can you imagine

  706. coming back from a trip?

  707. I was walking through this.

  708. Coming back from a trip,

  709. you know,

  710. I've got a plan.

  711. I've probably got

  712. a pretty tight schedule.

  713. I know where I'm going.

  714. You come back.

  715. You go to the parking lot

  716. and there is your car,

  717. a hunk of molten metal

  718. and plastic.

  719. Don't be anxious,

  720. Jesus says.

  721. What if you saw a need

  722. that you could

  723. actually meet?

  724. You could loan your van

  725. to the youth group

  726. for a trip to Monadnock

  727. later this year.

  728. You have an old,

  729. you have a piece of furniture

  730. that you could give

  731. to someone

  732. who doesn't have a bed.

  733. Would you do it?

  734. Would you do it

  735. if it was your bed

  736. and you had to pull out

  737. the old rusty one

  738. from the closet

  739. and put that back

  740. in your bedroom?

  741. The fact is

  742. that we have,

  743. we live in a culture

  744. that has become

  745. very comfortable

  746. with a lot

  747. of material possessions.

  748. Our standard of living

  749. is high

  750. and our cost of living

  751. is high

  752. and yet

  753. in the eyes of the world

  754. we are wealthy.

  755. and God wants

  756. our hearts

  757. to not be consumed

  758. with accumulating,

  759. gathering,

  760. and collecting

  761. and keeping

  762. these things.

  763. He wants us

  764. to be people

  765. who are glad givers

  766. not tight-fisted

  767. graspers.

  768. Here's another diagnostic.

  769. What do you spend

  770. your time doing?

  771. What do you spend

  772. your things,

  773. what do you spend

  774. your time praying about?

  775. What do you talk about

  776. with your friends?

  777. Do you see anxiety

  778. filling those spaces

  779. in your life?

  780. Anxiety about material things.

  781. Jesus says

  782. this is a heart

  783. orientation

  784. towards our

  785. physical belongings

  786. that is not good.

  787. We are putting

  788. our hope

  789. in something

  790. that cannot deliver

  791. to give us life.

  792. We are finding

  793. our present lives

  794. consumed

  795. with anxiety

  796. and worry

  797. about having

  798. or not having

  799. these things.

  800. And I know that

  801. for some of us here

  802. in this room,

  803. we've had a lot

  804. for a long time

  805. and it's easy

  806. for us to get comfortable.

  807. I know that

  808. for some of you,

  809. you've actually lived

  810. in a lot of need

  811. and you've faced times

  812. where you don't know

  813. where the next meal

  814. comes from

  815. or where the roof

  816. is over your head

  817. or what clothes

  818. you will have to wear.

  819. But as I read

  820. through this,

  821. we can have

  822. grasping anxious hearts

  823. whether we have

  824. a lot

  825. or a little.

  826. And God instead

  827. points us

  828. to something else.

  829. He points us

  830. as disciples,

  831. as followers of Him

  832. to a new way

  833. in the end

  834. of this passage.

  835. And He's already

  836. pointed towards it twice,

  837. being rich towards God

  838. and knowing

  839. a heavenly Father

  840. who knows what we need.

  841. But starting

  842. in verse 30,

  843. we see Him turn.

  844. Verse 31 actually

  845. is where we see

  846. Him really turn the corner.

  847. He says,

  848. there is a new way

  849. for followers of Jesus

  850. to live.

  851. He says,

  852. instead,

  853. seek His kingdom,

  854. that is God's kingdom,

  855. and all these things

  856. will be added to you.

  857. What does it mean

  858. to seek God's kingdom?

  859. Remember,

  860. I told you earlier,

  861. seeking in this passage

  862. is being used for the,

  863. what are the things

  864. that dominate your attention?

  865. What are the things

  866. that drive you?

  867. What are the things

  868. that absorb you?

  869. What are your obsessions?

  870. He says,

  871. I want you to be obsessed

  872. with the kingdom of God.

  873. What does that mean?

  874. The kingdom of God

  875. is the extent

  876. of God's effective rule

  877. and reign in this world.

  878. Right?

  879. God is the sovereign

  880. over all things,

  881. but His kingdom,

  882. when Jesus came,

  883. He said,

  884. the kingdom of God

  885. is near.

  886. What He was saying was,

  887. God is about to do

  888. a new thing

  889. to impress His will

  890. and to begin to build

  891. a kingdom

  892. where what God values

  893. and what God says

  894. is right and wrong

  895. and good and bad

  896. happen

  897. and that God's kingdom

  898. is presented

  899. as a picture

  900. of a place

  901. of flourishing

  902. and a place

  903. of joy

  904. and a place

  905. of abundance

  906. and a place

  907. of provision.

  908. A place where God

  909. is in the center

  910. of the world again.

  911. And Jesus says,

  912. this is worth

  913. our hearts

  914. being consumed by.

  915. The nations seek

  916. after these things,

  917. but you have something

  918. better to seek for.

  919. God and His kingdom.

  920. This is what you can

  921. set your heart on.

  922. This is what you can

  923. invest your life on.

  924. And you're going to

  925. invest your life

  926. in something

  927. that will not fade

  928. and therefore

  929. is not disappointing.

  930. When He says

  931. in verse 34

  932. or verse 33,

  933. provide for yourself

  934. money bags

  935. that don't grow old

  936. and with a treasure

  937. in heaven

  938. that does not fail

  939. where no thief

  940. approaches

  941. and no moth destroys.

  942. He's saying

  943. all of your physical

  944. belongings

  945. and all of your

  946. possessions

  947. will pass away.

  948. But when you invest

  949. in God's kingdom,

  950. you're investing

  951. in things

  952. that will last

  953. forever.

  954. How do we do this?

  955. What does it look like

  956. to seek God's kingdom?

  957. Well,

  958. that's a very broad question,

  959. but Jesus has very specific

  960. applications here.

  961. Verse 33,

  962. sell your possessions

  963. and give to the poor.

  964. Okay.

  965. Now next week,

  966. I expect you all

  967. to come in

  968. having one pair of clothing,

  969. one car,

  970. one house,

  971. and nothing else

  972. because that's,

  973. no,

  974. I don't actually think

  975. that's what Jesus is saying.

  976. As often,

  977. Jesus says things

  978. in very black and white nature

  979. in order for us

  980. to feel the impact

  981. of what he is saying.

  982. The reason why I say that

  983. is not just because

  984. I don't want to feel

  985. the sting of this command,

  986. but the reason is because

  987. you see it,

  988. even in this passage,

  989. the man with his barns

  990. was not criticized

  991. for being a wealthy man.

  992. He's being criticized

  993. for making his life

  994. be in his wealth.

  995. Okay.

  996. And we also see it

  997. throughout Scripture.

  998. Right.

  999. If you look,

  1000. you know,

1001. this is the book of Luke,

1002. the gospel according to Luke.

  1003. Luke then went on

  1004. and wrote a sequel

1005. about how the early church

  1006. lived out these things.

1007. And part of what you see

  1008. in the early church

1009. is people actually owned things.

  1010. They had homes

  1011. that hosted churches.

  1012. They had belongings

  1013. that they could give.

  1014. Ananias and Sapphira

  1015. were not condemned

  1016. for having land

1017. that they hadn't sold yet.

  1018. They were condemned

  1019. for lying about

  1020. how they did it.

  1021. And so,

  1022. this is,

  1023. well,

  1024. it's not,

1025. the ideal of God's kingdom

  1026. isn't communism

  1027. and everything

  1028. being owned communally,

  1029. but what it is

  1030. is generosity

  1031. and a freedom

1032. and a sense of stewardship

1033. that all that we have

  1034. has come from God

1035. and God has given to us

  1036. not for simply

  1037. our own sake

  1038. but for the sake

1039. that we may bless others

1040. in the name of Christ

  1041. and build his kingdom

  1042. by the way

  1043. that we do that.

  1044. This is what God

1045. wants us to think about.

1046. He wants us to think about

  1047. all the things

  1048. that I have.

  1049. Am I thinking about

  1050. how can I bless

  1051. others with them

1052. or am I simply thinking about

1053. how can I be more comfortable,

  1054. more secure,

  1055. more important,

  1056. find more meaning

  1057. in the things

  1058. that I have?

1059. To invest in God's kingdom

1060. in the age of the church

  1061. is to invest

  1062. in the gospel ministry

  1063. of word and deed

  1064. to proclaim Jesus Christ

1065. and to then live out

  1066. the ethics

  1067. that Jesus Christ

  1068. commands us to

  1069. in the world

  1070. as we await

  1071. Jesus coming back.

  1072. This is what God's

  1073. called us to.

1074. So I want to get

  1075. really practical

  1076. for a few minutes.

1077. I want you to think about

  1078. how you can invest

  1079. some of the places

  1080. where,

  1081. because you might be

  1082. sitting there thinking,

  1083. I don't know

  1084. how to do that.

  1085. I don't know

  1086. where to go.

1087. I get lots of stuff

  1088. in the mail.

  1089. I don't know how much

1090. of that is kingdom oriented.

  1091. What do I do?

1092. I want to give you

  1093. some places

  1094. for you to consider

  1095. where you could

  1096. ask the Lord,

  1097. Lord,

  1098. do you want me

  1099. to become more generous?

  1100. Do you want me

  1101. to give more

  1102. in these areas?

  1103. Before I get into

  1104. some of the details,

1105. I want to say this.

  1106. The giving that Jesus

  1107. calls us to here

  1108. is not merely

  1109. financial giving.

  1110. I gave some examples

  1111. earlier.

  1112. Your homes,

  1113. your cars,

  1114. your time,

  1115. your hospitality.

  1116. There are lots of

  1117. other ways

  1118. that you can invest

  1119. your possessions

  1120. of your life

  1121. and your time

  1122. in the kingdom.

1123. But I'm going to talk

  1124. specifically about money

  1125. today

  1126. and how you can

  1127. invest finances.

  1128. First thing I'm going

  1129. to say,

  1130. and this is with

  1131. a great disclaimer,

  1132. is you can give

  1133. to your local church.

  1134. Now,

  1135. having said that,

  1136. look,

  1137. the kingdom of God

  1138. is larger than

  1139. any local church

  1140. and I hope

  1141. that you

  1142. who have been

  1143. coming here

  1144. for a while

  1145. know that our heart

  1146. is not simply

  1147. to build a bigger

  1148. barn here

1149. so that we can have

  1150. more stuff here

  1151. for our own comfort

  1152. and welfare.

  1153. Right?

  1154. I hope that

  1155. you would remember

  1156. how often we pray

  1157. for the flourishing

  1158. of other churches

  1159. in the city.

  1160. How we pray

  1161. for the gospel ministry

  1162. here and around

  1163. the world.

  1164. If you're new here,

  1165. I hope you'll stick

  1166. around long enough

  1167. to hopefully find

  1168. that this is true

  1169. and if it's not,

  1170. please come tell me

1171. so we can fix that

  1172. because that would be

1173. terrible if that were true.

  1174. But the church,

  1175. globally and locally,

  1176. is God's central means

  1177. of building His kingdom

1178. and giving to the church

  1179. is a good thing.

1180. And we are on the brink

  1181. as a church

  1182. of investing a lot

  1183. of money

  1184. in expanding

  1185. our base of operations

  1186. here on this little

  1187. postage stamp

  1188. with a building campaign.

  1189. You guys know,

1190. if you haven't heard it

  1191. in three weeks,

1192. we will have a launch,

  1193. you will hear

  1194. all sorts of details,

  1195. plan to be here

  1196. on the 24th

1197. to be able to hear

  1198. about all the details

1199. of what that looks like.

  1200. But our heart

  1201. is not to build

  1202. a bigger barn

1203. so that people will think

  1204. we're an impressive church.

1205. Our heart is to build

  1206. a base of a church

1207. so that we can continue

  1208. and expand the ministries

1209. that we are doing already

  1210. of gospel preaching,

  1211. of gospel ministry

  1212. to the city.

1213. So if you want to think

1214. about giving to our church

  1215. the building campaign,

  1216. consider how you might

  1217. be able to be

1218. sacrificially a part of that.

  1219. But consider some

  1220. other options too.

  1221. Consider the DBF fund

  1222. that Nick mentioned

  1223. earlier in our service.

  1224. Consider the campus ministers

  1225. in our midst

  1226. who raise support

  1227. for their salary

  1228. and who raise money

  1229. for their operation costs.

  1230. Consider the poverty

  1231. of the gospel

  1232. on university campuses

  1233. and how few voices

  1234. there are there

  1235. and invest in those.

  1236. Consider investing

  1237. in Bridges of Hope,

  1238. the coalition of churches

  1239. that we're a part of

  1240. that's seeking to,

  1241. in Christ's name,

1242. do good to the city,

1243. that runs a mentoring program

1244. and is seeking to launch

  1245. a prison re-entry program

  1246. in other ways.

  1247. Consider something like

  1248. the 180 Center.

  1249. If you don't know

  1250. the 180 Center,

1251. it's over on Grand Avenue.

1252. They do a great work

  1253. doing addiction,

  1254. treatment,

  1255. recovery,

  1256. job training.

  1257. They run a lot

  1258. of different things.

  1259. If you're looking

  1260. for a place

1261. in the city to give to

  1262. that's doing great ministry

  1263. in Christ's name,

  1264. consider them.

  1265. Not only consider

1266. the needs of the city,

  1267. consider the needs

  1268. of the world.

1269. If you haven't been here

  1270. on a Sunday

  1271. when Hanum Asad

  1272. has come and talked

  1273. about his ministry

  1274. called Christian Mission

  1275. to Gaza,

  1276. and the ministry

  1277. that he is having

  1278. to Palestinian Christians

  1279. and the ministry

  1280. of the gospel

  1281. to Gaza,

  1282. which you can imagine

  1283. is an incredibly fraught

  1284. and very difficult ministry.

1285. Not only is he doing

  1286. ministry there

  1287. where there are lots

  1288. of needs

  1289. because the Christians

1290. get it from both sides

  1291. in that political conflict,

  1292. but then his base

  1293. of operations,

  1294. which is in Jordan,

  1295. has been ministering

  1296. to refugees

  1297. from Syria

  1298. and from Iraq

1299. for quite a while now.

  1300. There are great opportunities

  1301. to think about giving

  1302. to his ministry

  1303. and to the things

  1304. that they're doing there.

1305. And if for whatever reason

  1306. Hana and his ministry

  1307. isn't something

1308. that you want to give to,

  1309. there are great organizations.

  1310. World Vision does wonderful

  1311. world relief,

  1312. particularly in light

1313. of natural and human disasters.

  1314. Compassion International.

  1315. If you're a family,

1316. if you want to engage

  1317. in an ongoing process

1318. of investing in a child

  1319. somewhere in the world

1320. where they will be ministered to

  1321. by a church

1322. and where they will be supported

1323. so they can get food

  1324. and clothing

  1325. and grow up

  1326. and get an education,

  1327. wonderful opportunities.

  1328. Personal ministry.

1329. What about your everyday life?

  1330. Are you thinking about

1331. how you can be generous

  1332. in your everyday life?

  1333. Now, if you're considering,

1334. if you work in downtown New Haven

  1335. and you are exposed

  1336. to homelessness,

  1337. I think I mentioned this before.

  1338. Greg has written

  1339. a really great pamphlet

1340. that's on the back table

1341. that gives some really great wisdom

  1342. about how to actually

  1343. be most helpful.

  1344. Homelessness in America

  1345. and panhandling,

  1346. it's a complicated issue.

1347. What God wants for you

1348. is to have a generous heart.

1349. And then we also want

1350. to give you some instruction

1351. on how you might do that best

  1352. to be truly helpful.

1353. So pick up that flyer

1354. as you cultivate that heart.

1355. If you aren't on it,

  1356. consider being a part

1357. of the have need email list

  1358. that Michelle has.

1359. When people in our church

  1360. have needs

1361. and there are things like,

  1362. I need a bed,

  1363. I'm moving in a new house,

  1364. I have nothing.

1365. These are the kinds of things

1366. that go out on that list.

1367. Consider being on that list

1368. so you know the needs

1369. so that you can respond to them.

  1370. Here's a very practical thing.

  1371. If you don't know

1372. how to budget your money

1373. in order to be able

1374. to take some of your money

  1375. and give it away

  1376. because you never know

  1377. how much you have

1378. and how much you spend

1379. and how much you need,

1380. well maybe that would be

  1381. a first step.

1382. We as a church leadership

1383. would love to help you.

1384. At our last congregational meeting,

1385. someone stood up and said,

  1386. I would be willing

1387. to help you take steps

1388. in learning how to get a handle

  1389. on your finances

1390. so that you can be generous,

1391. so that you can give,

1392. so that you can be not consumed

  1393. by these things.

1394. So if you are in that need,

  1395. please let us know.

1396. Write it in a prayer card.

1397. Please talk to the staff

  1398. or the elders.

1399. We would love to direct you

  1400. in that.

  1401. I actually heard a story

1402. of a family in our church

  1403. that is purposefully eating

  1404. an extremely inexpensive meal

  1405. once a week

1406. rather than the normal meal

  1407. that they eat.

  1408. They eat something

1409. that will cost like less than $2.

  1410. So they can take

1411. what they would normally budget

  1412. for that,

1413. take the rest of the money,

  1414. and give it

  1415. in a particular way.

1416. If you are a family,

1417. maybe you would want to consider

  1418. something like that.

1419. That money could be set aside

  1420. for a compassion child.

1421. It could be set aside

  1422. for the mentoring program

  1423. at Bridges of Hope.

1424. You could do all sorts

  1425. of things with it.

  1426. These are the ways

  1427. that we work

  1428. into our everyday lives,

  1429. patterns of generosity,

  1430. patterns of sacrificial living,

  1431. patterns of thinking

  1432. what we have

1433. is not simply for ourselves,

1434. but it is to bless others.

  1435. Jesus finishes this passage

  1436. with a diagnostic

  1437. that is always striking

1438. when we read it properly.

  1439. Verse 34,

1440. for where your treasure is,

1441. there will your heart be also.

  1442. Humanly, we always want

  1443. to read this as,

1444. well, where your heart is,

1445. there will be your treasure also.

1446. The things that you love,

  1447. those are the things

  1448. you give to.

1449. But Jesus is not saying that.

  1450. Jesus is actually saying,

1451. use this as a final diagnostic.

1452. Where do you spend your stuff?

  1453. Your money, your time,

  1454. your resources, your possessions.

1455. Where do you spend those things?

1456. Those are the things you value.

1457. And allow that to be

1458. a diagnostic tool for you

1459. to see whether your heart

  1460. is right towards God.

  1461. whether you are actually

  1462. seeking God's kingdom

  1463. and sacrificially

  1464. and generously giving

1465. for the work of God's gospel

  1466. and God's church

1467. and the expansion of His kingdom.

  1468. Or whether you are

  1469. consumed by anxiety

  1470. and find yourself

  1471. with a grasping heart.

  1472. Amen.

  1473. Amen.

1474. The reason why we can do this

  1475. is in verse 32.

1476. It's the very core of this

1477. and we could spend lots more time

1478. but I just want to say,

1479. why can we do this?

  1480. Because friends,

1481. you have a heavenly Father

  1482. in the heavens

  1483. who knows your need.

  1484. Verse 32 says that

1485. it's not just His duty

1486. but it is His delight

1487. to give you His kingdom.

  1488. When you are seeking

  1489. after something,

  1490. you're not seeking it

1491. hoping you might get it.

1492. You are seeking after it

1493. when the God of the universe

  1494. is saying to you,

1495. yes, it is my pleasure

  1496. and my joy

1497. to give this thing to you.

1498. As you set your heart on it,

1499. I will meet you in that

1500. and I will give it to you.

  1501. And friends,

  1502. we know this

  1503. because of the gospel.

  1504. We know this

1505. because when we were still

  1506. enemies of God,

1507. when we were still dead

1508. in our sins and trespasses,

  1509. God loved us

1510. and He sent us His Son.

1511. This is the loving heart

  1512. of our Heavenly Father

  1513. who at great cost,

1514. at infinite cost to Himself,

  1515. sacrificed up Jesus.

1516. Jesus willingly goes to the cross

1517. in love so that we might know Him.

1518. if you are ever afraid

1519. that God doesn't know your need,

1520. if you are ever afraid

1521. that God isn't willing to help you,

1522. if you are ever afraid

  1523. that God is unable

  1524. to solve your situation

1525. or to take care of you,

1526. look at the cross of Jesus Christ

  1527. and be reminded

1528. that God has done that for you.

1529. And if God did not spare His Son

1530. but gave Him up for us all,

1531. how much more will He give you

  1532. all things?

1533. As the Apostle Paul says

  1534. in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1535. He loves you

1536. and He will take care of you.

  1537. and He calls you

1538. and me as followers of Him

  1539. to have a generous

  1540. and sacrificial heart

1541. because He is a generous

  1542. and sacrificial God.

  1543. Let's pray.

1544. Lord, thank You for this word.

1545. Lord, I pray that it would

  1546. not simply blow through

  1547. our lives

  1548. in these few minutes.

1549. But Lord, I pray that this word

1550. would reside in our hearts.

1551. Lord, that You would allow it

1552. to shape us and mold us.

1553. Lord, help us to see

  1554. when we are afraid

1555. that You won't care for us.

  1556. Help us to see

  1557. when we become grasping

1558. or when we set our hearts

  1559. on the things

  1560. that are passing away.

1561. Lord, help us to see Your kingdom.

1562. Remind us of the way

1563. that You have met us

  1564. most importantly

1565. by the sending of Your Son.

  1566. And Lord, we pray

1567. that You would change our hearts

1568. and that You would change

  1569. our relationship

  1570. to our money

  1571. and our things.

1572. Lord, that we might be

  1573. truly followers of You

1574. and that You might use us,

1575. Lord, to build Your kingdom here.

  1576. Lord, we pray this

  1577. in Jesus' name.

  1578. Amen.

1579. Well, friends, as we close,

  1580. it's a fitting ending

  1581. for us to come

  1582. to the Lord's table

  1583. because what we do

1584. when we take the bread

  1585. and drink the cup

  1586. is we are reminded

1587. of God and His character.

  1588. God who has acted

1589. in such a way in history

1590. so that He might save us.

  1591. And so,

1592. this is what we commemorate.

1593. This is what we celebrate.

1594. As we come to this,

  1595. we are reminded

  1596. both of the weightiness

  1597. of our sin,

1598. that it took the death

1599. of God's very own Son

  1600. to be our redemption

1601. and to be our Savior,

  1602. but it is also

  1603. a place of joy

  1604. where we see

  1605. how much God

  1606. has set His love

  1607. on us

1608. and what He has done

  1609. for us in Christ.

  1610. And in light of

  1611. what we've talked about

  1612. this morning,

  1613. I hope and pray

  1614. that you will

1615. not only take this in

  1616. as a reminder

  1617. of salvation

  1618. for those who put

  1619. their faith in Christ

1620. and of the joy of that,

  1621. but also

1622. that you would allow it

  1623. to sink in

  1624. and reflect a little

1625. on what we've talked about,

  1626. about the state

  1627. of your heart

  1628. and are you responding

  1629. to the gospel,

  1630. being generous

  1631. and sacrificial people

  1632. towards others.

  1633. So,

1634. I'd like to ask you

  1635. to reflect on that.

  1636. As always,

  1637. we invite all

  1638. who have placed

  1639. their faith

  1640. and trust

  1641. in Jesus Christ

1642. as their Lord and Savior

  1643. to partake with us

  1644. in this.

  1645. But if you're here

  1646. and you're visiting

  1647. or you're checking out

  1648. Christianity

1649. or this is something new,

  1650. my hope and prayer

  1651. is that you would,

  1652. rather than taking

  1653. these elements,

1654. which is meant to be

  1655. an expression of faith,

1656. you can look at the,

1657. there are a couple prayers

  1658. in the bulletin

  1659. you could consider praying,

  1660. but think about

1661. what it is that God,

  1662. what these elements represent

1663. and reflect on God's love

1664. that He has shown for you

  1665. and the invitation

  1666. that this is

  1667. for you to come

  1668. and put your faith

  1669. and trust in Him

  1670. as you do it.

  1671. Those who are serving

  1672. want to come forward

1673. and that would be great.

1674. As we will pass this out,

  1675. what we'll do

  1676. is we'll pass out

  1677. the crackers

1678. and you can hold on to it

1679. and then we'll eat it together

1680. and then we'll pass out

  1681. the cups

  1682. and do the same.

  1683. Don't you guys

1684. want to come over here?

  1685. The Apostle Paul,

1686. as he wrote about this,

  1687. wrote this,

1688. for I received from the Lord

1689. what I delivered to you

  1690. that the Lord Jesus

  1691. on the night

  1692. when He was betrayed

  1693. took bread

1694. and when He had given thanks

  1695. He broke it

  1696. and said,

  1697. this is my body

  1698. which is for you.

1699. Do this in remembrance of me.

1700. In the same way also

  1701. He took the cup

  1702. after supper

  1703. saying,

1704. this cup is a new covenant

  1705. in my blood.

  1706. Do this as often

1707. as you drink of it

  1708. in remembrance of me.

  1709. For as often

1710. as you eat this bread

  1711. and drink this cup

1712. you proclaim the Lord's death

  1713. until He comes.

  1714. and that's what we're doing

  1715. this morning.

  1716. Suzanne,

1717. can I ask you to

1718. pray for the bread please?

  1719. Dear God,

  1720. thank you for

  1721. the sacrifice

  1722. of your son Jesus.

  1723. Thank you for

  1724. dying on the cross

  1725. for our sins.

1726. And let us take this time

  1727. to

  1728. remember

1729. the blood that was shed

  1730. for us.

  1731. Thank you for
