  1. Well, good morning, church.

  2. We are picking up our series in the Gospel of Luke, looking at chapter 13 today, verses

  3. 1 through 9.

  4. That's page 819 in the Pew Bible.

  5. Let me invite you to turn there with me as we look at this next section in the Gospel

  6. of Luke.

  7. Let me read chapter 13, verses 1 through 9 for us.

  8. There were some present at that very time who told him, that is Jesus, about the Galileans

  9. whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

  10. And Jesus answered them, do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all

  11. the other Galileans because they suffered in this way?

  12. No, I tell you.

  13. But unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

  14. Or those 18 on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were

  15. worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem?

  16. No, I tell you.

  17. But unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

  18. And he told this parable.

  19. A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.

  20. And he said to the vinedresser, look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this

  21. tree and I find none.

  22. Cut it down.

  23. Why should it use up the ground?

  24. And he answered him, sir, let it alone this year also until I dig around it and put on

  25. manure.

  26. Then, if it should bear fruit next year, well and good.

  27. But if not, you can cut it down.

  28. Let's pray together.

  29. Father, we ask this morning that you would give us ears to hear and hearts to receive

  30. what you're saying through your son this morning.

  31. Lord, we need a word from outside of us to tell us what is good and right and beautiful.

  32. Lord, we need a word from outside of us to rescue us.

  33. So, Father, would we hear your word this morning?

  34. And would you get the glory?

  35. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  36. Amen.

  37. Well, the theme of our text this morning is repentance.

  38. And in particular, Jesus teaches us two things about repentance in this passage.

  39. The first thing we see is that the need for repentance is universal.

  40. And the second thing that Jesus teaches us is that the time for repentance is now.

  41. We see the first in verses one through five.

  42. The need for repentance is universal.

  43. Now, to understand what's going on in this paragraph, we have to see the context.

  44. In fact, we won't really understand what Jesus means by repent unless we take a step back

  45. and catch the larger story.

  46. About a week ago, I watched the new Avengers movie.

  47. What was it called?

  48. Infinity War.

  49. Has anyone seen that?

  50. And if you've seen that, you know that the opening of that movie starts with like Thor's

  51. missing an eye.

  52. His brother gets killed.

  53. There's this purple guy who's just wrecking havoc in the universe.

  54. And I haven't seen some of the other movies of the Avengers series.

  55. So, I had absolutely no clue what was going on.

  56. You know, when we come to a passage like this, it can feel a bit like that.

  57. We hear these commands, but we don't know the context.

  58. So, we need to take a step back and catch the larger story.

  59. At the end of chapter 12, if we just look at the literary context, starting in verse 49,

  60. Jesus has been teaching that in his ministry, in his presence, the great time of crisis,

  61. of division, and decision has come for Israel.

  62. Will they accept him as Messiah, as King, or not?

  63. The signs are all there, his teaching, his miracles, but are they willing to pay attention

  64. and read those signs?

  65. That's the point of verses 54 through 56 of chapter 12.

  66. Are they willing to open their eyes and see who Jesus really is, just like they're willing

  67. to read the signs of the weather?

  68. Then Jesus concludes with an illustration in verses 57 through 59.

  69. He says, if you were on your way to court and you had to settle things with your accuser

  70. before going to the judge, before getting thrown into prison, you would settle things before

  71. you got there, right?

  72. Jesus' point is that God's judgment is coming, and it's time for his audience to make things

  73. right while they still can.

  74. Of course, the idea of God's judgment isn't exactly a popular idea.

  75. I get that.

  76. But, you know, it's helpful for us to see that the reality of judgment and the need for repentance

  77. is something that Jesus himself taught.

  78. You know, this isn't an idea that some particularly sinister Puritans came up with in the 17th century.

  79. This isn't something that medieval theologians concocted in their monasteries.

  80. The idea of God's judgment isn't something that the apostle Paul invented, though we like

  81. to blame him for a lot of our issues with religion.

  82. No, it was Jesus himself who spoke more than anyone else in the Bible about the reality of

  83. divine judgment and the need for everyone to repent.

  84. But it's even bigger than that.

  85. You see, the context of Jesus' call to repentance is the whole sweeping biblical story itself.

  86. What we're listening into here in this passage from Luke 13 is the crux of the entire message of the Bible.

  87. That message, that story that the Bible unfolds for us, that there's one true God, a God of holy love,

  88. who created absolutely everything, who created everything to display his glory,

  89. and created everything to participate in his joy.

  90. Do you sometimes catch the sense of glory and joy at times in creation?

  91. Do you get a whiff of that wonder in the world around you?

  92. And the biblical story says that God created humans, God created you and me,

  93. to actually occupy a special place in creation.

  94. That amidst all of the wonder and beauty that God created,

  95. he made humanity in his own image,

  96. to reflect his glory in a unique way.

  97. And more than that, to be vice regents in God's good world,

  98. to be as it were sort of stewards or under kind of rulers,

  99. to cultivate and steward creation under God's good rule.

  100. This is what he's made us for.

  101. To bear his image in that way.

  102. Don't we kind of feel that responsibility today,

  103. even as we consider something like ecological justice,

  104. and humanity's unique role in caring for creation?

  105. There's something that we know that we are responsible for,

  106. a part and above, and that has an impact on everything else.

  107. But you know, this picture of humans sort of ruling joyfully under God,

  108. their creator, of flourishing, of bringing praise and honor to him,

  109. that's not how things remained.

  110. And as we look out in the world, we see that's not how things are, right?

  111. Rather than glorifying God as God, humanity rebelled against God's good rule.

  112. And in an act that the Bible pictures as an act of cosmic treason,

  113. we chose to be our own kings instead.

  114. And we chose to ignore God and the world God has made,

  115. and put ourselves in the center of things.

  116. And that is what the Bible means by sin.

  117. You see, sin doesn't necessarily mean doing lots of really bad things.

  118. You can actually be very, very moral,

  119. and still be living for yourself,

  120. rather than for God.

  121. You can be a quote-unquote good person,

  122. and yet still be rejecting God's kingship.

  123. And the penalty for sin is death.

  124. Just like a light bulb,

  125. being unscrewed from the socket eventually goes dark.

  126. So humanity, cut off from God,

  127. the source of all life and goodness and grace,

  128. so humanity, cut off from God,

  129. faces the dark of physical and spiritual death.

  130. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

  131. and the wages of sin is death.

  132. And this is where Jesus' call to repentance comes in.

  133. Repentance, you see, is not trying to clean up your act

  134. so God will accept you.

  135. Don't you see, if you're trying to earn God's favor

  136. through being a good person,

  137. then you're still trying to be your own king

  138. and your own master and run things your way.

  139. Because you're thinking you can fix the problem,

  140. and you can overcome the breach that's opened up

  141. between you and God.

  142. You can be the fixer.

  143. You can still be the king.

  144. But that's not what repentance is.

  145. That's not what Jesus is telling us we need.

  146. Repentance doesn't mean reform your life.

  147. It literally means change your mind.

  148. Repentance, it means admitting.

  149. You've been living as your own master,

  150. worshiping the wrong things,

  151. violating God's law.

  152. And to repent is actually to turn.

  153. It's transferring your allegiance,

  154. your priority from yourself as king

  155. to Jesus as king.

  156. It's willingly laying down your arms

  157. in the cosmic revolt

  158. and coming home to God.

  159. But here's the problem.

  160. When we hear Jesus' call to repent,

  161. to lay down our arms and receive him

  162. as God's rightful king,

  163. we can easily think that that call

  164. does not apply to me.

  165. We don't think it applies to us.

  166. And that brings us back

  167. to the heart of Luke chapter 13.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  168. Jesus has just said that divine judgment is coming,

  169. but rather than consider

  170. what that means for themselves,

  171. some people in the audience

  172. bring up a saucy piece of recent news.

  173. It's just blown up the Twitterverse

  174. in early Palestine.

  175. The news that Pilate,

  176. the Roman governor,

  177. who was a butcher

  178. and a cruel man,

  179. has just done something

  180. completely in character

  181. and murdered some Galileans in Jerusalem,

  182. sent his troops right in to kill them

  183. while they were worshiping

  184. and sacrificing in the temple.

  185. And such a gruesome death,

  186. Jesus' audience thinks,

  187. such a gruesome death like that

  188. must prove that those Galileans

  189. were really bad sinners.

  190. Right, Jesus?

  191. Isn't that the sort of judgment

  192. you're talking about, Jesus?

  193. Isn't it those sort of people

  194. who really need to repent?

  195. The ones who get what's coming to them?

  196. But how does Jesus respond?

  197. He reads right through.

  198. Do you think they were worse sinners

  199. because they suffered in this way?

  200. No.

  201. You see, it was a commonly held belief

  202. in the first century

  203. that tragedy and suffering

  204. was a result of personal sinfulness.

  205. In other words,

  206. if you were a bad person,

  207. bad things happen to you.

  208. But Jesus completely rejects

  209. that line of thinking.

  210. He says these people

  211. did not suffer this way

  212. because they were worse

  213. than anyone else.

  214. But more than that,

  215. Jesus won't allow his audience

  216. to deflect their own need

  217. for repentance

  218. by pointing to some group of people

  219. over there

  220. who they think must be really bad

  221. because of what's happened to them.

  222. You see what's happening here?

  223. It's as if the people in the crowd

  224. are actually saying,

  225. well, Jesus,

  226. we believe what you're saying

  227. about judgment.

  228. Surely there's going to become a time.

  229. The midnight hour

  230. is going to get struck

  231. when all of our masks come off,

  232. as Kierkegaard said, right?

  233. We all know that at some point

  234. we're going to face our maker

  235. and the true selves

  236. are going to be exposed.

  237. Of course,

  238. we believe what you're saying

  239. about judgment, Jesus,

  240. but surely that doesn't apply to us.

  241. Surely you must be talking

  242. about those Galileans

  243. who got what they deserved.

  244. Now,

  245. I'm sure

  246. that you don't share

  247. the mistaken first century belief

  248. that suffering and tragedy

  249. only happen to those

  250. who deserve it.

  251. That's a wrong belief

  252. and we should,

  253. along with Jesus,

  254. rightly reject it.

  255. But at the heart level,

  256. don't you and I feel

  257. that same tendency

  258. to deflect

  259. our own need

  260. to repent?

  261. Maybe you think,

  262. well,

  263. I'm not that bad.

  264. I mean,

  265. I make mistakes,

  266. but I'm not as bad

  267. as those people.

  268. And for you,

  269. it's not the hapless

  270. victims of tragedy

  271. that you point to,

  272. no,

  273. but it's some other

  274. seemingly notorious

  275. group of people

  276. how we happen

  277. to define it today.

  278. And yet,

  279. Jesus will not

  280. let us

  281. play

  282. the comparison game.

  283. Perhaps

  284. your outward life

  285. is more moral

  286. than another person.

  287. Maybe you have it

  288. all together

  289. for the most part.

  290. Maybe your life

  291. is successful

  292. and things are going well.

  293. Maybe you haven't

  294. broken any laws.

  295. Maybe you haven't

  296. done anything

  297. that's sort of

  298. especially terrible

  299. in the world's eyes.

  300. But have you given

  301. to God

  302. the glory

  303. he deserves?

  304. God has given us

  305. every breath

  306. in our lungs,

  307. every talent

  308. and skill

  309. we possess,

  310. every opportunity

  311. we enjoy.

  312. God holds us

  313. in being

  314. every moment.

  315. We are completely

  316. and utterly

  317. dependent upon

  318. him

  319. every single

  320. second.

  321. And yet,

  322. most of the day,

  323. we utterly

  324. ignore him.

  325. We put our own

  326. desires

  327. and our own

  328. wants

  329. and our own

  330. agenda

  331. at the center

  332. of our affections

  333. and drive

  334. that ship

  335. exactly as

  336. we choose.

  337. And then,

  338. if things

  339. don't go our way,

  340. we finally

  341. find the decency

  342. to think of God

  343. if only to

  344. blame him

  345. and question

  346. his goodness

  347. because things

  348. haven't gone

  349. the way

  350. we wanted

  351. them to.

  352. I know this,

  353. friends,

  354. about you

  355. because it's

  356. true of me.

  357. I do the exact

  358. same thing.

  359. Though the outward

  360. degree of sin

  361. may be different

  362. from person

  363. to person,

  364. the inner

  365. presence of sin

  366. is the same

  367. for us all.

  368. We all need

  369. to repent

  370. because we're

  371. all sinners

  372. and unless

  373. you repent,

  374. Jesus says,

  375. you will all

  376. likewise

  377. perish.

  378. like a ship

  379. sailing

  380. straight

  381. for the cliffs.

  382. Unless we

  383. turn

  384. and chart

  385. a new course

  386. and follow

  387. a new captain,

  388. we will all

  389. crash upon

  390. the rocks

  391. of God's

  392. goodness

  393. and holiness.

  394. Jesus is telling

  395. us loud and clear

  396. that the need

  397. for repentance

  398. is universal.

  399. But that's

  400. not the end.

  401. Jesus goes on

  402. in verses 6

  403. through 9

  404. to tell us

  405. that the time

  406. for repentance

  407. is now.

  408. Throughout this

  409. whole section

  410. of Luke,

  411. this whole middle

  412. section of Luke's

  413. gospel,

  414. Jesus has been

  415. pleading with

  416. Israel,

  417. with his own

  418. people,

  419. with the people

  420. of promise

  421. to turn back

  422. to God

  423. and acknowledge

  424. him as their

  425. Messiah before

  426. it's too late

  427. and to drive

  428. that point

  429. home,

  430. he tells a

  431. parable

  432. about a

  433. barren fig tree

  434. in a garden

  435. and there are

  436. three observations

  437. we need to make

  438. about this

  439. parable.

  440. The first thing

  441. we see in this

  442. parable,

  443. friends,

  444. is that God

  445. is making

  446. time for us.

  447. The owner

  448. of the vineyard

  449. comes to his

  450. own garden

  451. and to his

  452. own fig tree

  453. looking for

  454. fruit and he

  455. finds none

  456. and then we

  457. learn that it's

  458. actually been

  459. three years

  460. in a row

  461. that the owner

  462. has been

  463. patiently waiting

  464. for this tree

  465. to bear fruit

  466. and still

  467. none.

  468. Surely

  469. the time

  470. has come

  471. to cut

  472. this tree

  473. down

  474. and plant

  475. something else

  476. in its place

  477. to make room

  478. for a more

  479. productive tree.

  480. But the

  481. vinedresser,

  482. the gardener

  483. comes and

  484. says,

  485. let's give

  486. it one

  487. more year.

  488. we'll dig

  489. around it

  490. so water

  491. can get

  492. down to

  493. the roots,

  494. we'll

  495. fertilize

  496. it.

  497. And so

  498. together

  499. the owner

  500. and the

  501. vinedresser

  502. agree they'll

  503. extend one

  504. more year

  505. to this

  506. barren fig

  507. tree.

  508. And you see

  509. Jesus'

  510. point.

  511. Right now

  512. God is

  513. making a

  514. time for

  515. us.

  516. He would

  517. be fully

  518. within his

  519. rights to

  520. call us

  521. to account

  522. right now.

  523. And yet

  524. God

  525. still

  526. makes

  527. time.

  528. The

  529. apostle

  530. Peter writes

  531. this in

  532. his second

  533. letter.

  534. He says,

  535. God is

  536. patient

  537. towards you,

  538. not wishing

  539. that any

  540. should perish,

  541. but that

  542. all should

  543. reach

  544. repentance.

  545. patience.

  546. And this

  547. patience of

  548. God means

  549. that there's

  550. hope.

  551. The parable

  552. Jesus tells

  553. here holds

  554. out the

  555. possibility

  556. of fruit

  557. bearing,

  558. holds out

  559. the possibility

  560. of becoming

  561. a vibrant

  562. tree when

  563. before there's

  564. been nothing

  565. but a history

  566. of barrenness.

  567. There's hope

  568. that even if

  569. a life has

  570. been lived

  571. utterly

  572. fruitlessly

  573. to this

  574. moment,

  575. while God

  576. makes time,

  577. there's still

  578. hope for

  579. the about

  580. face of

  581. repentance

  582. and for

  583. the new

  584. spiritual

  585. life and

  586. vitality

  587. that God

  588. gives with

  589. repentance.

  590. In other

  591. words,

  592. your past

  593. does not

  594. need to

  595. determine

  596. your future

  597. with God.

  598. There is a

  599. gardener

  600. who has

  601. done a

  602. costly work

  603. on your

  604. behalf so

  605. that you

  606. might come

  607. alive.

  608. You know,

  609. in this

  610. story,

  611. the owner

  612. of the

  613. vineyard

  614. and the

  615. vine dresser

  616. of this

  617. parable,

  618. they make

  619. a costly

  620. decision,

  621. don't they?

  622. They make a

  623. costly decision

  624. to work

  625. and to dig

  626. up the soil

  627. around the

  628. tree,

  629. to spend

  630. time caring

  631. for this

  632. tree,

  633. to fertilize

  634. it,

  635. and perhaps

  636. even more,

  637. they absorb

  638. the cost

  639. of allowing

  640. this fruitless

  641. tree to

  642. remain

  643. and use

  644. up the

  645. ground

  646. when another

  647. more profitable

  648. tree could

  649. be put in

  650. its place.

  651. It was a

  652. costly decision

  653. for the owner

  654. and the

  655. vine dresser

  656. to make

  657. time for

  658. this barren

  659. fig tree.

  660. But friends,

  661. how much

  662. more costly

  663. was a

  664. decision

  665. made

  666. between God

  667. the Father

  668. and God

  669. the Son

  670. to make

  671. time for

  672. us.

  673. At the

  674. end of

  675. Jesus'

  676. journey to

  677. Jerusalem,

  678. he would

  679. be faced

  680. by the

  681. most

  682. barren

  683. tree

  684. imaginable,

  685. a Roman

  686. cross.

  687. And rather

  688. than turn

  689. away,

  690. Jesus

  691. identified

  692. fully with

  693. us.

  694. By being

  695. nailed to

  696. the cross,

  697. Jesus would

  698. literally take

  699. the place

  700. of the

  701. fruitless

  702. and

  703. unrepentant.

  704. Do you

  705. see it

  706. there?

  707. That

  708. utterly

  709. stripped

  710. down

  711. piece

  712. of

  713. wood

  714. and

  715. Jesus

  716. allowing

  717. himself

  718. to be

  719. pinned

  720. there

  721. in the

  722. place

  723. of the

  724. fruitless

  725. and

  726. unrepentant

  727. to

  728. literally

  729. take

  730. our

  731. place,

  732. to be

  733. cut

  734. down,

  735. to

  736. undergo

  737. the

  738. perishing

  739. we

  740. deserve

  741. so that

  742. you and

  743. I

  744. would

  745. never

  746. have

  747. to

  748. Jesus

  749. faced

  750. God's

  751. judgment

  752. for us

  753. so that

  754. we might

  755. receive

  756. God's

  757. favor.

  758. Through

  759. the

  760. cross,

  761. God

  762. has made

  763. time

  764. in the

  765. most

  766. costly

  767. way

  768. so that

  769. everyone

  770. who

  771. repents

  772. and

  773. trusts in

  774. Christ

  775. can receive

  776. pardon

  777. and new

  778. life.

  779. But the

  780. second observation

  781. from this

  782. parable is

  783. this,

  784. God has

  785. made

  786. time

  787. but the

  788. time won't

  789. be forever.

  790. The

  791. parable

  792. ends with

  793. another

  794. year being

  795. given to

  796. the fig

  797. tree but

  798. if the

  799. year ends

  800. and there's

  801. still no

  802. fruit that

  803. will be the

  804. end.

  805. The

  806. time of

  807. God's

  808. mercy,

  809. the

  810. opportunity

  811. to turn,

  812. to repent,

  813. to receive

  814. Christ as

  815. king,

  816. this time

  817. for you

  818. and for

  819. me,

  820. it won't

  821. extend

  822. forever,

  823. Jesus

  824. says.

  825. Friends,

  826. Jesus is

  827. warning us

  828. not to

  829. presume on

  830. God's

  831. mercy and

  832. patience.

  833. Our

  834. end could

  835. come at

  836. any moment.

  837. Life is

  838. fleeting and

  839. fragile.

  840. There are no

  841. guarantees that

  842. you or I will

  843. live out even

  844. this year.

  845. Does that

  846. sound a bit

  847. morbid to

  848. you?

  849. And yet,

  850. what good

  851. does it do

  852. to live in

  853. denial of

  854. the fact?

  855. If you had

  856. a medical

  857. condition that

  858. threatened to

  859. take your

  860. life, you

  861. would want

  862. to know,

  863. right?

  864. So you

  865. could get

  866. your affairs

  867. in order

  868. before it

  869. was too

  870. late.

  871. Jesus is

  872. the great

  873. physician and

  874. he's telling

  875. us that our

  876. spiritual

  877. condition is

  878. just the

  879. same.

  880. Sin will

  881. result in

  882. spiritual

  883. death.

  884. But if

  885. we turn

  886. to him,

  887. if we turn

  888. to Christ,

  889. we can be

  890. made right

  891. with God,

  892. our debt

  893. can be

  894. forgiven,

  895. and we

  896. can actually

  897. face death

  898. and judgment

  899. with confidence.

  900. Friends,

  901. there's time.

  902. God's made

  903. time for you.

  904. But Jesus

  905. is very clear

  906. that time

  907. is not going

  908. to extend

  909. forever.

  910. The third

  911. observation to

  912. make about

  913. this parable

  914. is that it's

  915. open-ended.

  916. Jesus doesn't

  917. tell us

  918. whether the

  919. fig tree

  920. bears fruit

  921. or not,

  922. does he?

  923. And that's

  924. intentional,

  925. you see.

  926. The parable

  927. is meant

  928. to challenge

  929. us.

  930. Jesus is

  931. trying to

  932. exhort us,

  933. to persuade

  934. us.

  935. He's trying

  936. to press

  937. home the

  938. question,

  939. what will

  940. you do?

  941. The owner

  942. has made

  943. time for

  944. you.

  945. That time

  946. will not

  947. last forever.

  948. How will

  949. you respond?

  950. the parable

  951. is a bit

  952. of a

  953. cliffhanger,

  954. isn't it?

  955. How will

  956. you respond?

  957. Will you

  958. acknowledge

  959. that as

  960. Jesus says,

  961. you too

  962. need to

  963. repent?

  964. Perhaps

  965. you're a

  966. person of

  967. high moral

  968. ideals.

  969. Perhaps

  970. you're here

  971. and you're

  972. a person

  973. of another

  974. faith

  975. altogether.

  976. Maybe the

  977. idea of

  978. repentance

  979. hasn't

  980. seriously

  981. crossed

  982. your

  983. mind

  984. before

  985. now.

  986. Maybe

  987. you've

  988. never

  989. felt

  990. the

  991. need.

  992. But for

  993. just a

  994. moment,

  995. friend,

  996. consider

  997. the

  998. cross

  999. of

  1000. Jesus.

  1001. The

  1002. cross

  1003. of

  1004. Jesus

  1005. demonstrates

  1006. both

  1007. the

  1008. unbelievable

  1009. love

  1010. of God

  1011. and the

  1012. terrible

  1013. sinfulness

  1014. of sin.

  1015. The

  1016. cross

  1017. demonstrates

  1018. the

  1019. love

  1020. of

  1021. God

  1022. because

  1023. Jesus

  1024. was

  1025. willing

  1026. and

  1027. glad

  1028. to

  1029. come

  1030. and

  1031. die

  1032. for

  1033. you.

  1034. But

  1035. the

  1036. cross

  1037. also

  1038. demonstrates

  1039. the

  1040. sinfulness

  1041. of our

  1042. sin.

  1043. Jesus

  1044. had to

  1045. die

  1046. in order

  1047. for our

  1048. sin

  1049. to be

  1050. forgiven.

  1051. If

  1052. there

  1053. was any

  1054. other

  1055. way

  1056. to be

  1057. reconciled

  1058. to

  1059. God,

  1060. if

  1061. there

  1062. was any

  1063. other

  1064. path

  1065. that could

  1066. be

  1067. tread,

  1068. if

  1069. there

  1070. was

  1071. any

  1072. other

  1073. way

  1074. through

  1075. the

  1076. dilemma,

  1077. why

  1078. on

  1079. earth

  1080. would

  1081. Jesus

  1082. die

  1083. if

  1084. there

  1085. was

  1086. some

  1087. other

  1088. way?

  1089. Why

  1090. would

  1091. God

  1092. send

  1093. his

  1094. son

  1095. in

  1096. this

  1097. way?

  1098. Surely

  1099. we

  1100. must

  1101. need

  1102. a

  1103. radical

  1104. redemption

  1105. only

  1106. Jesus

  1107. can

  1108. give

  1109. and

  1110. that's

  1111. why

  1112. Jesus

  1113. tells

  1114. everyone

  1115. to

  1116. repent

  1117. and

  1118. trust

  1119. in

  1120. him.

  1121. But

  1122. what

  1123. about

  1124. you

  1125. if

  1126. you're

  1127. a

  1128. long

  1129. time

  1130. church

  1131. attender?

  1132. Maybe

  1133. you've

  1134. been

  1135. coming

  1136. to

  1137. Trinity

  1138. for

  1139. some

  1140. length

  1141. of

  1142. time

  1143. and

  1144. if

  1145. so

  1146. you've

  1147. probably

  1148. heard

  1149. most

  1150. of

  1151. what

  1152. this

  1153. passage

  1154. has

  1155. to

  1156. say

  1157. along

  1158. the

  1159. way.

  1160. If

  1161. you've

  1162. been

  1163. coming

  1164. to

  1165. Trinity

  1166. maybe

  1167. you've

  1168. grown

  1169. up

  1170. here

  1171. maybe

  1172. this

  1173. is

  1174. your

  1175. church

  1176. where

  1177. you've

  1178. been

  1179. coming

  1180. your

  1181. whole

  1182. life

  1183. maybe

  1184. you've

  1185. been

  1186. coming

  1187. here

  1188. ever

  1189. since

  1190. you

  1191. moved

  1192. to

  1193. town

  1194. maybe

  1195. you

  1196. come

  1197. because

  1198. your

  1199. spouse

  1200. or

  1201. your

  1202. friend

  1203. keeps

  1204. dragging

  1205. you

  1206. along

  1207. you've

  1208. heard

  1209. the

  1210. gospel

  1211. of

  1212. Jesus

  1213. preached

  1214. you've

  1215. heard

  1216. the

  1217. good

  1218. news

  1219. of

  1220. forgiveness

  1221. of

  1222. sins

  1223. and

  1224. new

  1225. life

  1226. to

  1227. all

  1228. who

  1229. repent

  1230. and

  1231. trust

  1232. in

  1233. Christ

  1234. but

  1235. let

  1236. me

  1237. ask

  1238. you

  1239. friend

  1240. have

  1241. you

  1242. actually

  1243. repented

  1244. have

  1245. you

  1246. made

  1247. the

  1248. decisive

  1249. turn

  1250. or

  1251. do

  1252. you

  1253. just

  1254. come

  1255. and

  1256. participate

  1257. in the

  1258. service

  1259. and

  1260. make

  1261. friends

  1262. over

  1263. coffee

  1264. maybe

  1265. even

  1266. serve

  1267. in a

  1268. ministry

  1269. all

  1270. those

  1271. things

  1272. are

  1273. good

  1274. things

  1275. but

  1276. it's

  1277. possible

  1278. to

  1279. do

  1280. all

  1281. that

  1282. and

  1283. still

  1284. not

  1285. repent

  1286. repentance

  1287. is a

  1288. surrendering

  1289. of the

  1290. whole

  1291. heart

  1292. to

  1293. Christ

  1294. do

  1295. you

  1296. sit

  1297. week

  1298. after

  1299. week

  1300. under

  1301. God's

  1302. word

  1303. without

  1304. any

  1305. real

  1306. turning

  1307. to

  1308. him

  1309. do

  1310. you

  1311. see

  1312. any

  1313. fruit

  1314. any

  1315. evidence

  1316. of

  1317. repentance

  1318. in

  1319. your

  1320. life

  1321. what

  1322. does

  1323. fruit

  1324. of

  1325. repentance

  1326. look

  1327. like

  1328. here's

  1329. how

  1330. J.C.

  1331. Ryle

  1332. described

  1333. it

  1334. he

  1335. said

  1336. real

  1337. repentance

  1338. starts

  1339. to

  1340. look

  1341. like

  1342. this

  1343. it

  1344. begins

  1345. with

  1346. a

  1347. knowledge

  1348. of

  1349. sin

  1350. you

  1351. see

  1352. it

  1353. you

  1354. acknowledge

  1355. it

  1356. and

  1357. it

  1358. goes

  1359. on

  1360. to

  1361. sorrow

  1362. for

  1363. sin

  1364. you

  1365. grieve

  1366. it

  1367. it

  1368. leads

  1369. to

  1370. confession

  1371. of

  1372. sin

  1373. before

  1374. God

  1375. you

  1376. start

  1377. to

  1378. admit

  1379. it

  1380. and

  1381. call

  1382. out

  1383. to

  1384. God

  1385. for

  1386. forgiveness

  1387. but

  1388. then

  1389. it

  1390. starts

  1391. to

  1392. bear

  1393. other

  1394. fruit

  1395. it

  1396. starts

  1397. to

  1398. show

  1399. itself

  1400. before

  1401. others

  1402. by

  1403. a

  1404. thorough

  1405. breaking

  1406. off

  1407. from

  1408. sin

  1409. you

  1410. want

  1411. to

  1412. not

  1413. just

  1414. has

  1415. your

  1416. mind

  1417. changed

  1418. your

  1419. heart

  1420. changed

  1421. but

  1422. you

  1423. want

  1424. to

  1425. change

  1426. your

  1427. life

  1428. too

  1429. it

  1430. leads

  1431. to

  1432. a

  1433. new

  1434. direction

  1435. and

  1436. it

  1437. results

  1438. in

  1439. producing

  1440. a

  1441. habit

  1442. of

  1443. deep

  1444. distaste

  1445. for

  1446. all

  1447. sin

  1448. it

  1449. loses

  1450. the

  1451. savor

  1452. that

  1453. it

  1454. once

  1455. had

  1456. and

  1457. above

  1458. all

  1459. repentance

  1460. is

  1461. inseparably

  1462. connected

  1463. Ryle

  1464. says

  1465. with

  1466. a

  1467. lively

  1468. faith

  1469. in

  1470. the

  1471. Lord

  1472. Jesus

  1473. it's

  1474. a

  1475. turning

  1476. from

  1477. one

  1478. thing

  1479. unto

  1480. him

  1481. has

  1482. repentance

  1483. begun

  1484. to

  1485. produce

  1486. that

  1487. sort

  1488. of

  1489. fruit

  1490. in

  1491. your

  1492. life

  1493. has

  1494. the

  1495. about

  1496. face

  1497. from

  1498. self

  1499. to

  1500. God

  1501. the

  1502. surrender

  1503. of

  1504. your

  1505. whole

  1506. self

  1507. to

  1508. him

  1509. begun

  1510. to

  1511. look

  1512. like

  1513. that

  1514. there's

  1515. a

  1516. difference

  1517. you know

  1518. between

  1519. merely

  1520. professing

  1521. Christ

  1522. and

  1523. really

  1524. possessing

  1525. Christ

  1526. if

  1527. you've

  1528. been

  1529. coming

  1530. to

  1531. church

  1532. for

  1533. some

  1534. time

  1535. can

  1536. you

  1537. say

  1538. you

  1539. really

  1540. possess

  1541. him

  1542. maybe

  1543. so

  1544. maybe

  1545. by

  1546. God's

  1547. grace

  1548. you

  1549. can

  1550. point

  1551. to

  1552. the

  1553. fruit

  1554. of

  1555. repentance

  1556. in

  1557. your

  1558. life

  1559. for

  1560. many

  1561. of

  1562. you

  1563. here

  1564. I

  1565. know

  1566. that's

  1567. true

  1568. and

  1569. if

  1570. that

  1571. is

  1572. true

  1573. in

  1574. your

  1575. own

  1576. life

  1577. then

  1578. Christian

  1579. thank

  1580. God

  1581. for

  1582. it

  1583. and

  1584. go

  1585. on

  1586. repenting

  1587. to

  1588. the

  1589. end

  1590. of

  1591. your

  1592. earthly

  1593. life

  1594. perhaps

  1595. one

  1596. of

  1597. the

  1598. greatest

  1599. signs

  1600. that

  1601. repentance

  1602. is

  1603. starting

  1604. to

  1605. take

  1606. root

  1607. is

  1608. that

  1609. you

  1610. realize

  1611. how

  1612. much

  1613. you

  1614. always

  1615. needed

  1616. that

  1617. you're

  1618. never

  1619. exempt

  1620. even

  1621. if

  1622. you've

  1623. been

  1624. a

  1625. genuine

  1626. Christian

  1627. for

  1628. a

  1629. long

  1630. time

  1631. friends

  1632. our

  1633. repentance

  1634. will

  1635. continue

  1636. all

  1637. the

  1638. way

  1639. into

  1640. glory

  1641. when

  1642. finally

  1643. we're

  1644. made

  1645. new

  1646. in the

  1647. very

  1648. presence

  1649. of

  1650. our

  1651. triune

  1652. God

  1653. but

  1654. responding

  1655. to

  1656. Jesus'

  1657. parable

  1658. doesn't

  1659. just mean

  1660. acknowledging

  1661. our need

  1662. to

  1663. repent

  1664. it

  1665. means

  1666. seeing

  1667. our

  1668. need

  1669. to

  1670. repent

  1671. now

  1672. to

  1673. really

  1674. feel

  1675. the

  1676. urgency

  1677. of

  1678. it

  1679. do

  1680. you

  1681. remember

  1682. that

  1683. scene

  1684. from

  1685. the

  1686. screw

  1687. tape

  1688. letters

  1689. if

  1690. you're

  1691. a

  1692. CS

  1693. Lewis

  1694. fan

  1695. early

  1696. on

  1697. I

  1698. think

  1699. the

  1700. main

  1701. character

  1702. is

  1703. sitting

  1704. in

  1705. the

  1706. library

  1707. I

  1708. imagine

  1709. him

  1710. sitting

  1711. in

  1712. the

  1713. in

  1714. the

  1715. Bodleian

  1716. in

  1717. Oxford

  1718. staring

  1719. up

  1720. maybe

  1721. he's

  1722. in

  1723. Radcliffe

  1724. camera

  1725. sort

  1726. of

  1727. admiring

  1728. the

  1729. glass

  1730. window

  1731. and

  1732. suddenly

  1733. has

  1734. this

  1735. thought

  1736. oh

  1737. my

  1738. goodness

  1739. God

  1740. is

  1741. real

  1742. and

  1743. I

  1744. need

  1745. to

  1746. get

  1747. right

  1748. with

  1749. him

  1750. and

  1751. it

  1752. strikes

  1753. the

  1754. main

  1755. character

  1756. as

  1757. the

  1758. most

  1759. important

  1760. question

  1761. in

  1762. the

  1763. universe

  1764. but

  1765. then

  1766. he

  1767. gets

  1768. hungry

  1769. and

  1770. he

  1771. has

  1772. to

  1773. go

  1774. get

  1775. something

  1776. to

  1777. eat

  1778. by

  1779. the

  1780. time

  1781. he

  1782. makes

  1783. it

  1784. out

  1785. to

  1786. the

  1787. street

  1788. and

  1789. sees

  1790. the

  1791. bus

  1792. is

  1793. going

  1794. by

  1795. and

  1796. sees

  1797. the

  1798. new

  1799. books

  1800. he

  1801. wants

  1802. to

  1803. buy

  1804. oh

  1805. he's

  1806. on

  1807. to

  1808. something

  1809. else

  1810. but

  1811. friends

  1812. do you

  1813. see

  1814. the

  1815. urgency

  1816. of

  1817. repentance

  1818. why

  1819. would

  1820. you

  1821. wait

  1822. it's

  1823. a very

  1824. foolish

  1825. thing

  1826. to put

  1827. it

  1828. off

  1829. you

  1830. know

  1831. some

  1832. people

  1833. think

  1834. that

  1835. they'll

  1836. have

  1837. their

  1838. fun

  1839. now

  1840. and

  1841. then

  1842. when

  1843. they're

  1844. old

  1845. they'll

  1846. come

  1847. to

  1848. terms

  1849. with

  1850. God

  1851. but

  1852. that

  1853. is

  1854. a

  1855. very

  1856. foolish

  1857. agenda

  1858. friends

  1859. after

  1860. all

  1861. what

  1862. makes

  1863. you

  1864. think

  1865. that

  1866. in

  1867. old

  1868. age

  1869. you'll

  1870. have

  1871. any

  1872. desire

  1873. to

  1874. come

  1875. to

  1876. terms

  1877. with

  1878. God

  1879. and

  1880. what

  1881. guarantee

  1882. do

  1883. you

  1884. have

  1885. that

  1886. God

  1887. will

  1888. allow

  1889. you

  1890. to

  1891. tarry

  1892. that

  1893. long

  1894. and

  1895. moreover

  1896. don't

  1897. you

  1898. see

  1899. that

  1900. a

  1901. life

  1902. lived

  1903. for

  1904. God

  1905. in

  1906. Christ

  1907. is

  1908. where

  1909. your

  1910. deepest

  1911. purpose

  1912. and

  1913. joy

  1914. is

  1915. found

  1916. repentance

  1917. is a

  1918. transformation

  1919. from

  1920. death

  1921. to

  1922. life

  1923. from

  1924. sleeping

  1925. to

  1926. waking

  1927. from

  1928. captivity

  1929. to

  1930. freedom

  1931. from

  1932. the

  1933. dangerous

  1934. rocks

  1935. of the

  1936. cliff

  1937. ridden

  1938. shore

  1939. to the

  1940. open

  1941. seas

  1942. of

  1943. God's

  1944. kingdom

  1945. repentance

  1946. isn't

  1947. a

  1948. turning

  1949. into

  1950. some

  1951. sort

  1952. of

  1953. dark

  1954. alley

  1955. and

  1956. biding

  1957. our

  1958. time

  1959. it's

  1960. stepping

  1961. out

  1962. into

  1963. the

  1964. light

  1965. and

  1966. finding

  1967. the

  1968. real

  1969. reason

  1970. for

  1971. which

  1972. we

  1973. were

  1974. made

  1975. communion

  1976. with

  1977. God

  1978. and

  1979. a

  1980. life

  1981. lived

  1982. as

  1983. a

  1984. part

  1985. of

  1986. his

  1987. loving

  1988. redemptive

  1989. liberating

  1990. reign

  1991. in the

  1992. world

  1993. why

  1994. on earth

  1995. would you

  1996. want to

  1997. wait

  1998. are there

  1999. questions or

  2000. doubts you

  2001. still have

  2002. about

  2003. Christianity

  2004. maybe that's

  2005. what's

  2006. holding you

  2007. back

  2008. then

  2009. explore

  2010. them

  2011. without

  2012. delay

  2013. the

  2014. stakes

  2015. are

  2016. too

  2017. high

  2018. to

  2019. keep

  2020. putting

  2021. those

  2022. questions

  2023. off

  2024. and

  2025. maybe

  2026. you

  2027. need

  2028. to

  2029. consider

  2030. whether

  2031. some

  2032. of

  2033. your

  2034. doubts

  2035. and

  2036. questions

  2037. might

  2038. better

  2039. be

  2040. explored

  2041. inside

  2042. the

  2043. faith

  2044. rather

  2045. than

  2046. outside

  2047. of

  2048. it

  2049. you

  2050. know

  2051. you

  2052. can

  2053. learn

  2054. how

  2055. a

  2056. bike

  2057. a bicycle

  2058. works

  2059. by

  2060. riding

  2061. it

  2062. just

  2063. as

  2064. well

  2065. as

  2066. by

  2067. studying

  2068. it

  2069. some

  2070. questions

  2071. about

  2072. Christianity

  2073. may be

  2074. better

  2075. answered

  2076. in a

  2077. living

  2078. relationship

  2079. with

  2080. Christ

  2081. than

  2082. far

  2083. apart

  2084. from

  2085. him

  2086. maybe

  2087. you

  2088. need

  2089. to

  2090. take

  2091. a

  2092. step

  2093. and

  2094. keep

  2095. exploring

  2096. that

  2097. way

  2098. but maybe

  2099. it's not

  2100. the questions

  2101. or doubts

  2102. maybe it's

  2103. the cost

  2104. of following

  2105. Jesus that

  2106. causes you

  2107. to delay

  2108. perhaps the

  2109. idea of

  2110. transferring

  2111. your allegiance

  2112. to Christ

  2113. makes it

  2114. seem like

  2115. the very

  2116. thought of

  2117. that seems

  2118. like you'd

  2119. lose

  2120. just too

  2121. much

  2122. friends

  2123. reputation

  2124. pursuits

  2125. maybe

  2126. maybe you

  2127. feel like

  2128. you'd

  2129. lose

  2130. a

  2131. key

  2132. part

  2133. of

  2134. your

  2135. very

  2136. identity

  2137. in

  2138. giving

  2139. your

  2140. life

  2141. over

  2142. to

  2143. Christ

  2144. and

  2145. transferring

  2146. yourself

  2147. to

  2148. him

  2149. the

  2150. cost

  2151. seems

  2152. too

  2153. high

  2154. but

  2155. if that's

  2156. true

  2157. for you

  2158. friend

  2159. remember

  2160. all that

  2161. Christ

  2162. has done

  2163. for

  2164. you

  2165. if

  2166. he

  2167. gave

  2168. up

  2169. his

  2170. own

  2171. life

  2172. if

  2173. he

  2174. climbed

  2175. the

  2176. barren

  2177. tree

  2178. for

  2179. you

  2180. then

  2181. nothing

  2182. we

  2183. lose

  2184. for

  2185. him

  2186. will

  2187. compare

  2188. to

  2189. what

  2190. we

  2191. stand

  2192. to

  2193. gain

  2194. God

  2195. has

  2196. made

  2197. time

  2198. for

  2199. you

  2200. his

  2201. kindness

  2202. is

  2203. meant

  2204. to

  2205. lead

  2206. you

  2207. to

  2208. repentance

  2209. don't

  2210. delay

  2211. let's

  2212. pray

  2213. why don't

  2214. we

  2215. take a

  2216. few

  2217. moments

  2218. in

  2219. the

  2220. quiet

  2221. of

  2222. this

  2223. moment

  2224. together

  2225. just

  2226. to

  2227. reflect

  2228. silently

  2229. on

  2230. what

  2231. God

  2232. may

  2233. have

  2234. been

  2235. speaking

  2236. to

  2237. our

  2238. hearts

  2239. this

  2240. morning

  2241. for

  2242. some

  2243. of

  2244. us

  2245. this

  2246. morning

  2247. it's

  2248. a good

  2249. opportunity

  2250. to give

  2251. quiet

  2252. thanks

  2253. in

  2254. our

  2255. heart

  2256. that

  2257. our

  2258. eyes

  2259. have

  2260. indeed

  2261. been

  2262. opened

  2263. and

  2264. God

  2265. has

  2266. granted

  2267. us

  2268. the

  2269. gift

  2270. of

  2271. repentance

  2272. would you

  2273. thank him

  2274. this

  2275. morning

  2276. if that's

  2277. you

  2278. for

  2279. some

  2280. of us

  2281. there's

  2282. still

  2283. things

  2284. we're

  2285. grappling

  2286. with

  2287. as we

  2288. consider

  2289. the

  2290. claims

  2291. of

  2292. Christ

  2293. I

  2294. wonder

  2295. this

  2296. morning

  2297. if you

  2298. would

  2299. ask

  2300. God

  2301. to help

  2302. give

  2303. you

  2304. wisdom

  2305. and

  2306. clarity

  2307. on

  2308. some

  2309. of

  2310. those

  2311. questions

  2312. God's

  2313. a

  2314. speaking

  2315. God

  2316. Jesus

  2317. says to

  2318. ask

  2319. and seek

  2320. and knock

  2321. and it

  2322. will be

  2323. opened

  2324. to

  2325. us

  2326. would

  2327. you

  2328. ask him

  2329. this

  2330. morning

  2331. I

  2332. wonder

  2333. if

  2334. some

  2335. of

  2336. us

  2337. are

  2338. ready

  2339. to

  2340. make

  2341. the

  2342. decisive

  2343. turn

  2344. that

  2345. Jesus

  2346. talks

  2347. about

  2348. in

  2349. this

  2350. passage

  2351. if

  2352. that's

  2353. you

  2354. maybe

  2355. you

  2356. could

  2357. pray

  2358. something

  2359. along

  2360. these

  2361. lines

  2362. father

  2363. I

  2364. see

  2365. that

  2366. I'm

  2367. more

  2368. flawed

  2369. and

  2370. I'm

  2371. more

  2372. sinful

  2373. than

  2374. I

  2375. ever

  2376. dared

  2377. believe

  2378. but

  2379. I

  2380. also

  2381. see

  2382. that

  2383. I'm

  2384. even

  2385. more

  2386. loved

  2387. and

  2388. more

  2389. accepted

  2390. than

  2391. I

  2392. ever

  2393. dared

  2394. hope

  2395. father

  2396. I

  2397. turn

  2398. from

  2399. my

  2400. old

  2401. life

  2402. of

  2403. living

  2404. for

  2405. myself

  2406. I

  2407. have

  2408. nothing

  2409. in

  2410. my

  2411. record

  2412. to

  2413. merit

  2414. your

  2415. approval

  2416. but

  2417. now

  2418. I

  2419. rest

  2420. in

  2421. what

  2422. Jesus

  2423. did

  2424. and

  2425. ask

  2426. to

  2427. be

  2428. accepted

  2429. into

  2430. God's

  2431. family

  2432. into

  2433. your

  2434. family

  2435. father

  2436. for

  2437. his

  2438. sake

  2439. if

  2440. you

  2441. can

  2442. make

  2443. that

  2444. prayer

  2445. your

  2446. own

  2447. this

  2448. morning

  2449. would

  2450. you

  2451. tell

  2452. someone

  2453. after

  2454. the

  2455. service

  2456. maybe

  2457. the

  2458. friend

  2459. you

  2460. came

  2461. with

  2462. you

  2463. can

  2464. talk

  2465. to

  2466. me

  2467. afterwards

  2468. take

  2469. a

  2470. step

  2471. of

  2472. being

  2473. known

  2474. as

  2475. a

  2476. follower

  2477. of

  2478. Jesus

  2479. father

  2480. we

  2481. pray

  2482. that

  2483. you

  2484. would

  2485. take

  2486. all

  2487. that

  2488. we've

  2489. heard

  2490. this

  2491. morning

  2492. you

  2493. would

  2494. seal

  2495. it

  2496. into

  2497. our

  2498. hearts

  2499. and

  2500. above

  2501. all

  2502. Lord

  2503. we

  2504. pray

  2505. that

  2506. you

  2507. would

  2508. give

  2509. us

  2510. a

  2511. deep

  2512. gladness

  2513. in

  2514. Christ

  2515. who

  2516. has

  2517. opened

  2518. the

  2519. door

  2520. of

  2521. repentance

  2522. for

  2523. us

  2524. so

  2525. that

  2526. all

  2527. might

  2528. go

  2529. in

  2530. Jesus

  2531. we

  2532. give

  2533. you

  2534. praise

  2535. and

  2536. glory

  2537. this

  2538. morning

  2539. for

  2540. the

  2541. great

  2542. Savior

  2543. and

  2544. Lord

  2545. that

  2546. you

  2547. are

  2548. and

  2549. we

  2550. surrender

  2551. our

  2552. lives

  2553. to

  2554. you

  2555. amen

  2556. well

  2557. friends

  2558. one of

  2559. the

  2560. first

  2561. public

  2562. steps

  2563. that

  2564. we

  2565. take

  2566. when

  2567. we've

  2568. committed

  2569. our

  2570. lives

  2571. to

  2572. Christ

  2573. is

  2574. to

  2575. make

  2576. a

  2577. public

  2578. profession

  2579. of

  2580. faith

  2581. in

  2582. baptism

  2583. baptism

  2584. is

  2585. a

  2586. symbol

  2587. of

  2588. our

  2589. union

  2590. kingdom

  2591. kingdom

  2592. the

  2593. organization

  2594. to

  2595. Creator

  2596. is

  2597. responsible

  2598. to
