  1. In our first time together, we considered the call of the disciple to put out into the

  2. deep with Christ.

  3. We then considered the course answering that call puts us upon one involving an ongoing

  4. dying, yet also of the simultaneous upwelling of the life of Christ within us.

  5. This morning, we want to take up another constant companion in our course as disciples, and that

  6. is an inner conflict with which our experience is perpetually fraught.

  7. And while I want to be soberly realistic as to this dread conflict, I want the accent to

  8. fall upon the hope we have that even in this fierce inner fray, our Lord Christ has given

  9. us provision that we might not finally succumb, but rather prevail.

  10. To speak of an inner conflict is to speak of a reality with which every disciple is intimately

  11. familiar.

  12. The Apostle Paul depicts this conflict forthrightly in Galatians 5.

  13. And that is where we will put in.

  14. Here is how he describes it.

  15. Turn there, if you would.

  16. Galatians 5, picking up in verse 17.

  17. What's going on here?

  18. How does this conflict play out?

  19. Well, when we choose one course of action, say something good or right, then our sinful

  20. desires, the desires of our fallen humanity, oppose.

  21. Alternately, when, alas, we have a mind to do something wrong, the spirit opposes, the indwelling

  22. spirit.

  23. Perhaps you experience this conflict this very morning, 7 a.m. snug in your warm bed.

  24. You awaken to your alarm, which you deliberately set early, reflecting your holy desire to make

  25. it to Sunday school this semester, as was your ambition.

  26. You start to get up accordingly.

  27. That is, about to do the thing that you please.

  28. Suddenly, your flesh opposes you, so that you would not do it.

  29. That is, not do your spiritual pleasure.

  30. You are, says the flesh.

  31. Really?

  32. Are you really going to get up?

  33. Oh, but you're so exhausted.

  34. You were reading that Page Turner spy novel last night, and you didn't get to bed till

  35. 1 a.m.

  36. You're awfully tired.

  37. Why don't you just take a miss this one morning?

  38. There will be plenty more.

  39. One morning can't hurt.

  40. You'll catch up next time.

  41. Besides, if you get up now, you'll be so tired, you'll probably embarrass yourself by

  42. falling asleep at the church service, the worship service.

  43. You wouldn't want to be nodding off then.

  44. So, a little more shut-eye, and you'll be able to stave off, nodding off.

  45. All right, so now, you are about to roll over and fall back asleep.

  46. That is, do the thing you please in fleshly esteem.

  47. Then, the spirit opposes you.

  48. That is, opposes your now prevailing fleshly pleasure.

  49. Suddenly, you feel convicted.

  50. What am I doing?

  51. I resolved this semester to attend Sunday school.

  52. I want my life to show some spiritual harvest.

  53. And, I think this would be a good way to sow to it.

  54. In the final clause of verse 17,

  55. So that you may not do the things you please.

  56. That describes the outcome of the conflict.

  57. Not simply the result of one or other force, whether flesh or spirit, prevailing.

  58. Sometimes, not doing as we are a mind to represents the spirit's victory.

  59. Other times, alas, it indicates the flesh prevailing.

  60. It all depends upon what or whom we allow ourselves to be persuaded by.

  61. I wonder if you've ever experienced this kind of thing.

  62. Which of us does not know this conflict?

  63. Now, I want you to take, for a moment,

  64. The most grueling, fleshly enticement.

  65. Self-pity or self-assertion.

  66. Anger or anxiety.

  67. Lust or laziness.

  68. Pride or possessiveness.

  69. Fear or fury.

  70. And recall the dread struggle.

  71. Is it not an experience of ferocity?

  72. Can we not at times feel as if in the throes of a Jekyll and Hyde tale?

  73. You recall the chilling description of the moral conflict within,

  74. which Robert Louis Stevenson gives us in his classic.

  75. The parallel was suggested by an old mentor of mine.

  76. Dr. Jekyll, a respectable London physician,

  77. in the course of research,

  78. discovers a drug which transmogrifies him

  79. into a repulsive, malevolent dwarf.

  80. Hyde.

  81. And Hyde performs all kinds of immoral and abominable acts.

  82. Yet for all of Jekyll's shame and disgust at these deeds,

  83. he finds himself incorrigibly addicted to his alter ego.

  84. And the more often he yields to the drug,

  85. the more difficult to regain his virtuous identity afterwards.

  86. Eventually, the evil side of his personality so dominates

  87. that he becomes permanently wedded to the character of Hyde,

  88. finally destroying himself after many a heinous crime,

  89. a dramatic and dreadful inner conflict.

  90. Interestingly, judging from some of the author's correspondence,

  91. it is not unlikely that Stevenson intended his story

  92. as an allegorical commentary on this very verse of Paul.

  93. Well, if so, and if he got it right,

  94. so much for our hoped-for hopeful accent.

  95. Will Hyde, in the end, destroy Jekyll?

  96. Will the deeds of the flesh,

  97. the very unglorious catalog of verses 19 through 21,

  98. be the prevalent display?

  99. Sometimes I can sure feel this way.

  100. But not according to Paul.

  101. And this is why this passage brings mighty encouragement.

  102. So for all of Paul's sympathy

  103. with the power and inveteracy of the flesh,

  104. all of the sinful desires of our fallen humanity,

  105. the apostle in this passage

  106. is notwithstanding optimistic.

  107. Notice that it opens with a reassuring promise.

  108. Surely one of the most wonderful promises

  109. of the whole Bible.

  110. Do you see it there, verse 16?

  111. Walk by the Spirit

  112. and you will not carry out

  113. the desire of the flesh.

  114. If you have the NIV,

  115. it dissolves this promise

  116. by making it a second imperative.

  117. In other words, a command.

  118. But that's not the way to translate it.

  119. It's a promise.

  120. It's a promise.

  121. You see, it is for us,

  122. as disciples of Jesus,

  123. no longer a conflict

  124. of Jekyll versus Hyde.

  125. That was the old war

  126. before we were believers.

  127. And that was a losing battle.

  128. But now,

  129. it is Jekyll plus the Holy Spirit

  130. versus Hyde.

  131. And with the Spirit,

  132. the balance of power

  133. in the inner war

  134. has been decisively altered.

  135. And this battle,

  136. we can win

  137. and we shall win.

  138. But how?

  139. That's what we need to know.

  140. What is the way of victory?

  141. How do we overcome

  142. the dark acts of the flesh,

  143. clamoring to be indulged?

  144. And instead,

  145. begin to bear the fruit

  146. of the Spirit.

  147. That glory display

  148. of the character of Christ

  149. that's cataloged there

  150. from verse 22 on.

  151. What is the dynamic?

  152. Surely,

  153. there are few questions

  154. more vitally practical

  155. for the Christian.

  156. And Paul gives us the answer

  157. in this passage.

  158. And though challenging

  159. to apply,

  160. I think it's probably

  161. simple to grasp.

  162. And I want us

  163. to apply ourselves

  164. to grasping it.

  165. So let's pray.

  166. Lord,

  167. we thank you

  168. that you have given us

  169. every good thing we need

  170. for doing your will.

  171. That you have given us

  172. all that we need

  173. for life and godliness

  174. in your scriptures.

  175. And that you can take

  176. these truths

  177. and you can make them real

  178. and animate them for us

  179. by your Spirit.

  180. Would you do that?

  181. That we might

  182. begin to display

  183. this wonderful glory

  184. that is the character

  185. of Christ.

  186. So we ask for this aid

  187. with confidence

  188. that you will give us

  189. it

  190. as our good shepherd

  191. in Jesus' name.

  192. Okay,

  193. here it is

  194. in a nutshell.

  195. Team,

  196. for victory

  197. in this battle,

  198. we must

  199. maintain

  200. both

  201. toward

  202. the flesh

  203. and the Spirit

  204. a right attitude

  205. or posture

  206. or disposition.

  207. Namely,

  208. in the Apostle's words,

  209. we must

  210. first

  211. crucify

  212. the flesh

  213. and we must

  214. walk

  215. by the Spirit.

  216. Okay?

  217. Let's look at each

  218. of these vital aspects

  219. in turn.

  220. So for one,

  221. we must

  222. crucify

  223. the flesh.

  224. Verse 24,

  225. those who belong

  226. to Christ

  227. have

  228. crucified

  229. the flesh.

  230. Notice the tense

  231. there,

  232. have

  233. crucified.

  234. This crucifixion

  235. is something

  236. that took place

  237. for us

  238. in the past.

  239. So when did we,

  240. described as

  241. those who belong

  242. to Christ,

  243. when did we

  244. crucify

  245. the flesh?

  246. Well,

  247. at our conversion,

  248. when we repented

  249. and we believed

  250. in Christ,

  251. it was then

  252. that we,

  253. by faith,

  254. were united

  255. to Christ

  256. and so shared

  257. in His

  258. crucifixion.

  259. It was then

  260. that we were

  261. incorporated

  262. into His,

  263. Christ's,

  264. death

  265. and resurrection.

  266. As Paul

  267. previously told

  268. the Galatians

  269. in 2.20,

  270. I have been

  271. crucified

  272. with Christ.

  273. So both

  274. 2.20,

  275. which I just quoted,

  276. I have been

  277. crucified with Christ

  278. and chapter

  279. 5.24

  280. refer to the

  281. same event.

  282. But,

  283. and this is

  284. vitally important,

  285. don't miss this,

  286. there's a crucial

  287. difference between

  288. 2.20

  289. and 5.24.

  290. Although they refer

  291. to the same event,

  292. they're looking

  293. at it

  294. from different

  295. angles.

  296. Notice

  297. that Galatians

  298. 2.20

  299. is passive.

  300. I have

  301. been

  302. crucified

  303. with Christ.

  304. Okay?

  305. I have been

  306. crucified.

  307. It happened

  308. to me.

  309. But here,

  310. in 5.24,

  311. it is

  312. active.

  313. Do you see

  314. that?

  315. Here,

  316. crucifixion

  317. is not

  318. done

  319. to us,

  320. but

  321. by us.

  322. Do you see

  323. that?

  324. It is

  325. we ourselves

  326. who are said

  327. to have

  328. crucified

  329. the flesh.

  330. How

  331. was this

  332. so?

  333. Well,

  334. when we came

  335. to Christ,

  336. we repented,

  337. we put to

  338. death

  339. everything

  340. that we knew

  341. to be wrong,

  342. we radically

  343. renounced

  344. fellowship

  345. with sin,

  346. we took

  347. our old

  348. self-centered

  349. selves,

  350. all its

  351. sinful

  352. passions

  353. and desires,

  354. and we

  355. nailed it

  356. to the

  357. cross.

  358. That's

  359. what we

  360. did.

  361. Probably,

  362. our promise

  363. at our

  364. baptism

  365. gave verbal

  366. expression

  367. to this

  368. turning

  369. from

  370. a life

  371. of following

  372. sin

  373. to a

  374. life

  375. of following

  376. Christ.

  377. Christ.

  378. Now,

  379. in describing

  380. the Christian's

  381. relation to

  382. her flesh

  383. as that

  384. of crucifixion,

  385. Paul is

  386. borrowing

  387. Jesus'

  388. metaphor.

  389. It was

  390. he that

  391. originated

  392. this

  393. metaphor.

  394. You

  395. recall,

  396. he says

  397. in Mark

  398. 8,

  399. 34,

  400. if anyone

  401. would follow

  402. me,

  403. they must

  404. deny

  405. themselves

  406. and take

  407. up their

  408. cross.

  409. Okay,

  410. crucifixion.

  411. And the

  412. cross was

  413. the Lord's

  414. figure of

  415. self-denial,

  416. a crucifying

  417. of self.

  418. Now,

  419. when anyone

  420. was seen

  421. taking up

  422. a cross,

  423. there was

  424. no question

  425. as to

  426. what was

  427. happening.

  428. That was

  429. very clear.

  430. Execution.

  431. That was

  432. the point

  433. of it.

  434. And Paul

  435. is making

  436. the same

  437. point here.

  438. Taking

  439. up the

  440. cross

  441. means

  442. that we

  443. need to

  444. make sure

  445. that an

  446. execution

  447. takes place.

  448. And that

  449. is the

  450. Christian's

  451. posture

  452. toward the

  453. flesh,

  454. their flesh,

  455. crucifixion.

  456. Okay,

  457. now,

  458. these days,

  459. I hope I

  460. may safely

  461. say that

  462. we haven't

  463. witnessed

  464. a live

  465. crucifixion.

  466. Not so

  467. for those

  468. in Jesus'

  469. and Paul's

  470. day.

  471. People

  472. would have

  473. seen

  474. crucifixion.

  475. Hence,

  476. for them,

  477. the

  478. grisly

  479. power

  480. of this

  481. metaphor.

  482. What did

  483. it

  484. communicate?

  485. Let me

  486. draw this

  487. out.

  488. And the

  489. late

  490. John

  491. Stott

  492. is very

  493. helpful in

  494. his commentary

  495. on this

  496. stuff,

  497. too.

  498. So,

  499. for one,

  500. crucifixion

  501. was

  502. pitiless.

  503. Pitiless.

  504. It was

  505. not a

  506. pleasant

  507. form of

  508. execution

  509. for the

  510. nice and

  511. the refined.

  512. It was

  513. reserved for

  514. the worst

  515. of criminals.

  516. If you

  517. were a

  518. Roman citizen,

  519. couldn't do

  520. this.

  521. No,

  522. this is

  523. too

  524. terrible.

  525. And that's

  526. how our

  527. flesh is

  528. to be

  529. treated.

  530. We are

  531. to show

  532. it no

  533. courtesy

  534. or deference.

  535. It is

  536. so

  537. flagitious

  538. that it

  539. deserves no

  540. better fate

  541. than to be

  542. crucified.

  543. Also

  544. significant to

  545. the metaphor,

  546. crucifixion

  547. was

  548. painful

  549. and so

  550. also

  551. will be

  552. our

  553. rejection

  554. of our

  555. flesh.

  556. Who

  557. does not

  558. know

  559. the acute

  560. pain,

  561. even

  562. anguish

  563. of the

  564. inner

  565. conflict

  566. when the

  567. fleeting

  568. pleasures

  569. of sin

  570. are

  571. renounced?

  572. You

  573. remember

  574. Augustine's

  575. cry,

  576. Oh,

  577. Lord,

  578. give me

  579. chastity.

  580. Just not

  581. yet.

  582. Just not

  583. yet.

  584. Or what's

  585. that wonderful

  586. part in

  587. Lewis's

  588. great

  589. divorce.

  590. Remember

  591. when that

  592. habit,

  593. that terrible

  594. fleshly

  595. habit that

  596. is dominated

  597. and the

  598. angel is

  599. saying,

  600. can I

  601. kill it?

  602. And that

  603. habit sitting

  604. on the

  605. shoulder,

  606. oh,

  607. you can't

  608. kill me,

  609. don't,

  610. no,

  611. oh,

  612. think of

  613. what it

  614. will be

  615. to be

  616. without

  617. me,

  618. no,

  619. I

  620. comfort

  621. you,

  622. oh,

  623. I

  624. bring

  625. you

  626. such

  627. pleasure,

  628. don't

  629. kill

  630. me,

  631. can I

  632. kill

  633. it?

  634. Oh,

  635. no,

  636. you

  637. can't,

  638. the

  639. anguish

  640. is terrible.

  641. That's

  642. what it's

  643. to crucify

  644. these things.

  645. And also,

  646. part of the

  647. metaphor as

  648. well,

  649. crucifixion

  650. was decisive.

  651. No one

  652. who saw

  653. someone nailed

  654. to a

  655. cross

  656. queried,

  657. you know,

  658. I wonder

  659. what the

  660. outcome of

  661. this will

  662. be.

  663. No,

  664. no,

  665. although

  666. death by

  667. crucifixion

  668. was a

  669. lingering

  670. death,

  671. it was

  672. a certain

  673. death.

  674. Everyone

  675. knew

  676. criminals

  677. nailed to

  678. a cross

  679. did not

  680. survive.

  681. they were

  682. left there

  683. to die.

  684. And so

  685. it is

  686. and must

  687. be with

  688. our

  689. flesh.

  690. Now,

  691. it is

  692. true

  693. that the

  694. crucifying

  695. of our

  696. flesh

  697. produces

  698. death,

  699. not

  700. suddenly,

  701. typically,

  702. rather

  703. gradually.

  704. In fact,

  705. we never

  706. succeed in

  707. completely

  708. killing it

  709. off in

  710. this life.

  711. But,

  712. we fixed

  713. it to

  714. the cross

  715. and we

  716. are

  717. determined

  718. to keep

  719. it there

  720. until it

  721. expires.

  722. It's

  723. interesting

  724. that soldiers

  725. were placed

  726. on the

  727. scene of

  728. the execution

  729. to guard

  730. the victim

  731. and their

  732. job was to

  733. prevent anyone

  734. rushing up

  735. and taking

  736. them down

  737. from the

  738. cross.

  739. So,

  740. at least

  741. until the

  742. felon was

  743. completely

  744. dead.

  745. God,

  746. and so

  747. it is

  748. with

  749. Christians.

  750. We have

  751. put,

  752. when we

  753. came to

  754. Christ,

  755. we have

  756. put our

  757. flesh on

  758. the cross.

  759. We

  760. crucified

  761. it at

  762. our

  763. conversion.

  764. This

  765. was a

  766. decisive

  767. action

  768. in the

  769. past.

  770. But,

  771. that

  772. decisive

  773. action in

  774. the past

  775. involves

  776. the

  777. ongoing

  778. duty

  779. of

  780. keeping

  781. the

  782. flesh

  783. on

  784. the

  785. cross.

  786. We

  787. need to

  788. leave it

  789. there

  790. to die.

  791. And,

  792. it will

  793. be a

  794. lingering

  795. death.

  796. Life

  797. long.

  798. Now,

  799. this

  800. requires

  801. of us

  802. a daily,

  803. moment

  804. by moment,

  805. continuous

  806. attitude

  807. toward our

  808. flesh

  809. of

  810. ruthless

  811. and

  812. uncompromising

  813. rejection.

  814. As

  815. Jesus

  816. said,

  817. take up

  818. your

  819. cross,

  820. daily.

  821. Daily.

  822. That is,

  823. each and

  824. every day.

  825. No half

  826. holidays or

  827. holidays or

  828. long weekends

  829. for the

  830. flesh.

  831. We can't

  832. do it.

  833. No.

  834. However

  835. painful to

  836. experience,

  837. we must

  838. show our

  839. flesh no

  840. pity.

  841. However

  842. much it

  843. pleads,

  844. screams,

  845. petitions,

  846. no

  847. mercy.

  848. This

  849. must be

  850. our

  851. policy.

  852. daily

  853. draconianism.

  854. Okay?

  855. And this

  856. daily

  857. reassertion

  858. of our

  859. crucifixion,

  860. decisively

  861. begun at

  862. conversion,

  863. is

  864. absolutely

  865. vital

  866. in this

  867. terrible

  868. contest.

  869. We

  870. cannot,

  871. having once

  872. nailed our

  873. flesh to

  874. the cross,

  875. wistfully

  876. return to

  877. the scene

  878. of execution

  879. and there

  880. begin to

  881. fondle and

  882. caress the

  883. flesh and

  884. long for

  885. its release

  886. or maybe

  887. even try to

  888. take it down

  889. from the

  890. cross just

  891. for a little

  892. bit.

  893. So how

  894. does all

  895. this play

  896. out

  897. practically?

  898. Okay?

  899. When some

  900. jealous

  901. or proud

  902. or malicious

  903. or lustful

  904. thought or

  905. suggestion

  906. invades our

  907. minds,

  908. we must

  909. banish it

  910. at once,

  911. instantly

  912. exile it,

  913. give it not

  914. a moment's

  915. refuge.

  916. We cannot

  917. be an

  918. abetter

  919. to a

  920. condemned

  921. criminal.

  922. And it's

  923. fatal to

  924. Parley

  925. to begin

  926. to examine

  927. it and

  928. consider

  929. whether or

  930. not we

  931. might give

  932. in.

  933. No,

  934. no.

  935. I mean,

  936. imagine

  937. Joseph

  938. responding to

  939. Potiphar's

  940. wife's

  941. proposition.

  942. Well,

  943. run that

  944. by me

  945. again.

  946. What

  947. particularly

  948. did you

  949. have in

  950. mind?

  951. Yeah,

  952. good luck,

  953. buddy.

  954. No,

  955. no.

  956. We have

  957. declared

  958. war on

  959. the flesh.

  960. We cannot

  961. resume

  962. negotiations.

  963. The issue

  964. is settled

  965. and cannot

  966. be reopened.

  967. We have

  968. crucified

  969. the flesh

  970. and we

  971. are never

  972. going to

  973. draw the

  974. nails.

  975. So this

  976. is the

  977. posture

  978. that we

  979. must

  980. maintain

  981. unflaggingly,

  982. indefatigably,

  983. incorrigibly

  984. toward our

  985. flesh.

  986. If we

  987. are to

  988. experience

  989. victory

  990. in this

  991. crucial

  992. campaign.

  993. If we

  994. are ever

  995. to see

  996. glory

  997. begin to

  998. dawn and

  999. show its

  1000. radiant

  1001. beauty

  1002. in our

  1003. lives,

  1004. the likes

  1005. of that

  1006. wonderful

  1007. catalog of

  1008. fruit

  1009. that we

  1010. see there.

  1011. But

  1012. there is

  1013. an

  1014. indispensable,

  1015. a second

  1016. prong to

  1017. this

  1018. strategy.

  1019. Namely,

  1020. the

  1021. attitude

  1022. or posture

  1023. that we

  1024. must

  1025. maintain

  1026. in relation

  1027. to the

  1028. indwelling

  1029. Holy Spirit.

  1030. Okay?

  1031. So,

  1032. we must

  1033. walk by

  1034. the Spirit.

  1035. And we

  1036. saw that

  1037. this was

  1038. pivotal to

  1039. that promise

  1040. there in

  1041. verse 16.

  1042. Walk by

  1043. the Spirit

  1044. and you

  1045. will not

  1046. carry out

  1047. the desire

  1048. of the

  1049. flesh.

  1050. And the

  1051. phrase occurs

  1052. again in

  1053. verse 25

  1054. there.

  1055. If we

  1056. live by

  1057. the Spirit,

  1058. let us

  1059. also

  1060. walk by

  1061. the Spirit.

  1062. Okay?

  1063. Here the

  1064. Spirit is

  1065. first described

  1066. as the

  1067. source and

  1068. sustaining

  1069. power of

  1070. the believer's

  1071. life.

  1072. We live

  1073. by the

  1074. Spirit,

  1075. then as

  1076. the

  1077. regulative

  1078. principle

  1079. of the

  1080. believer's

  1081. life.

  1082. Walk

  1083. by the

  1084. Spirit.

  1085. So,

  1086. the exhortation

  1087. here is

  1088. this.

  1089. Since,

  1090. and that

  1091. probably

  1092. better renders

  1093. the if

  1094. for the

  1095. condition

  1096. is assumed

  1097. to be

  1098. true,

  1099. since

  1100. the Spirit

  1101. is the

  1102. source of

  1103. our life,

  1104. let the

  1105. Spirit also

  1106. direct the

  1107. course of

  1108. our life.

  1109. So,

  1110. how does

  1111. this play

  1112. out?

  1113. Well,

  1114. it plays

  1115. out in

  1116. terms of

  1117. a posture

  1118. that we

  1119. adopt in

  1120. relation to

  1121. the Holy

  1122. Spirit.

  1123. And the

  1124. requisite

  1125. posture is

  1126. described in

  1127. this passage

  1128. in two

  1129. ways.

  1130. First,

  1131. it is to

  1132. be led

  1133. by the

  1134. Spirit,

  1135. verse 18,

  1136. led by

  1137. the Spirit.

  1138. Second,

  1139. it is to

  1140. walk by

  1141. the Spirit,

  1142. verses 16

  1143. and 18.

  1144. Sorry,

  1145. no,

  1146. 16 and 25.

  1147. Yeah,

  1148. 16 and 25.

  1149. In each of

  1150. these expressions

  1151. in the Greek,

  1152. Spirit is

  1153. positioned first

  1154. in word

  1155. order for

  1156. emphasis,

  1157. implying that

  1158. the Spirit

  1159. is the

  1160. key to

  1161. this

  1162. process.

  1163. And the

  1164. verbs are

  1165. both

  1166. continuous,

  1167. implying the

  1168. need for

  1169. this to

  1170. be happening

  1171. on an

  1172. ongoing

  1173. basis,

  1174. not just

  1175. episodic,

  1176. has to be

  1177. ongoing.

  1178. And so

  1179. much those

  1180. phrases have

  1181. in common.

  1182. But there

  1183. is a

  1184. critical

  1185. distinction

  1186. between

  1187. being led

  1188. by the

  1189. Spirit

  1190. and walking

  1191. by the

  1192. Spirit.

  1193. Notice that

  1194. the former

  1195. is passive

  1196. and the

  1197. latter is

  1198. active.

  1199. In other

  1200. words,

  1201. it is the

  1202. Spirit who

  1203. does the

  1204. leading,

  1205. but we

  1206. who do

  1207. the walking.

  1208. So first

  1209. then,

  1210. we are

  1211. led by

  1212. the Spirit.

  1213. That is,

  1214. the Spirit

  1215. here takes

  1216. the initiative,

  1217. he forms

  1218. within us,

  1219. the indwelling

  1220. Spirit forms

  1221. within us,

  1222. holy and

  1223. heavenly desires,

  1224. and he puts

  1225. gentle

  1226. pressure on

  1227. us to

  1228. yield to

  1229. his direction.

  1230. As, for

  1231. example, we

  1232. speculated may

  1233. have happened

  1234. at 7 a.m.

  1235. this morning

  1236. when the

  1237. Holy Spirit

  1238. awakened you

  1239. and gently

  1240. prompted you

  1241. perhaps to

  1242. recall your

  1243. ambition to

  1244. make it to

  1245. Sunday school

  1246. this semester.

  1247. Just gently

  1248. prompted you

  1249. with that

  1250. recognition.

  1251. And then

  1252. perhaps reminded

  1253. you gently

  1254. that you

  1255. desire a

  1256. spiritual harvest

  1257. in your life

  1258. and this is

  1259. going to be a

  1260. good way that

  1261. you might sow

  1262. to that.

  1263. So you

  1264. yielded to

  1265. his promptings

  1266. and you

  1267. got up and

  1268. here you are.

  1269. Well done!

  1270. Well done!

  1271. Here you are.

  1272. Maybe it's

  1273. growing up in

  1274. Vienna but I

  1275. tend to think

  1276. of this process

  1277. like a

  1278. waltz.

  1279. I wish my

  1280. sister were

  1281. here.

  1282. She could

  1283. really

  1284. demonstrate.

  1285. She's a

  1286. master waltz

  1287. instructor.

  1288. Well she's

  1289. actually a

  1290. missionary but

  1291. she does a

  1292. little waltzing

  1293. on the side.

  1294. But in

  1295. that it's

  1296. just you

  1297. get it's

  1298. probably with

  1299. a lot of

  1300. old-fashioned

  1301. dances at

  1302. least you're

  1303. just following

  1304. the gentle

  1305. lead of the

  1306. partner.

  1307. And this

  1308. kind of

  1309. describes the

  1310. passive aspect

  1311. of our

  1312. relation to

  1313. the spirit.

  1314. Yielding to

  1315. the spirit's

  1316. lead.

  1317. Just gently

  1318. taking us

  1319. along and we

  1320. just respond to

  1321. the lead of

  1322. the spirit.

  1323. So that's that

  1324. side.

  1325. But in

  1326. relation to

  1327. the holy

  1328. spirit it's

  1329. not our

  1330. relation to

  1331. the spirit is

  1332. not entirely

  1333. passive and

  1334. it would be a

  1335. grave mistake

  1336. to think so.

  1337. We are not

  1338. simply led by

  1339. the spirit.

  1340. We also

  1341. walk by the

  1342. spirit.

  1343. And this is

  1344. the active

  1345. side.

  1346. It's interesting

  1347. to note and

  1348. I think

  1349. suggestive that

  1350. the Greek

  1351. words translated

  1352. alike walk

  1353. so in the

  1354. English 16

  1355. and 25

  1356. just walk

  1357. same word

  1358. but in

  1359. Greek they're

  1360. different words.

  1361. The verb

  1362. in verse 16

  1363. is the

  1364. ordinary word

  1365. for walking

  1366. but in

  1367. verse 25

  1368. the verb

  1369. translated

  1370. walk

  1371. isn't the

  1372. ordinary

  1373. it's not

  1374. the ordinary

  1375. word

  1376. but rather

  1377. one that

  1378. suggests

  1379. marching

  1380. or

  1381. walking in

  1382. rank

  1383. or walking

  1384. in line

  1385. with

  1386. it's a

  1387. different one.

  1388. It's a word

  1389. that's used

  1390. in Romans

  1391. 4.12

  1392. and translated

  1393. follow in

  1394. the steps

  1395. of the

  1396. faith of

  1397. your father

  1398. Abraham.

  1399. And it

  1400. occurs again

  1401. in Galatians

  1402. 6.16

  1403. where it's

  1404. rendered

  1405. walk by

  1406. this rule

  1407. and the

  1408. notion is

  1409. deliberately

  1410. walking

  1411. the path

  1412. that's marked

  1413. out by

  1414. the spirit.

  1415. Okay?

  1416. In the

  1417. spirit's

  1418. steps.

  1419. Here,

  1420. because I

  1421. picked on

  1422. the NIV

  1423. before,

  1424. here the

  1425. NIV

  1426. very

  1427. felicitously

  1428. puts it

  1429. in step

  1430. with the

  1431. spirit.

  1432. That's

  1433. good.

  1434. That's

  1435. good.

  1436. I

  1437. regularly

  1438. take the

  1439. girls out

  1440. hiking,

  1441. my daughters,

  1442. and they

  1443. have become

  1444. equal to

  1445. some pretty

  1446. astonishingly

  1447. tough terrain

  1448. now.

  1449. Very proud

  1450. of them.

  1451. But when

  1452. they were

  1453. young,

  1454. occasionally

  1455. we would

  1456. encounter

  1457. a particularly

  1458. tricky bit

  1459. of trail

  1460. and some

  1461. sort of

  1462. soggy

  1463. slough

  1464. or a

  1465. carking

  1466. quagmire

  1467. or who

  1468. knows what.

  1469. And here

  1470. I would

  1471. tell Vienna

  1472. then Geneva

  1473. and Belle,

  1474. okay,

  1475. watch where

  1476. dad puts

  1477. his feet

  1478. and you

  1479. step just

  1480. where dad

  1481. steps.

  1482. And then I

  1483. would show

  1484. them how to

  1485. pick their

  1486. way through

  1487. the little

  1488. challenging

  1489. bit and

  1490. they would

  1491. do that.

  1492. And that's

  1493. the idea

  1494. here.

  1495. Or if

  1496. you,

  1497. again,

  1498. if you want

  1499. the ballroom

  1500. metaphor again,

  1501. think of a

  1502. dance school

  1503. this time,

  1504. not the

  1505. waltz,

  1506. but the

  1507. dance school

  1508. where don't

  1509. they stencil

  1510. out the

  1511. steps that

  1512. you're supposed

  1513. to take?

  1514. One,

  1515. two,

  1516. three,

  1517. four,

  1518. and you

  1519. place your

  1520. feet in

  1521. those steps

  1522. and that's

  1523. how you

  1524. learn these

  1525. moves.

  1526. And that's

  1527. what this

  1528. is.

  1529. So the

  1530. Holy Spirit

  1531. is not

  1532. simply the

  1533. partner to

  1534. prompt the

  1535. dance in

  1536. our first

  1537. metaphor to

  1538. whom we

  1539. passively

  1540. yield,

  1541. that's one

  1542. side,

  1543. but he is

  1544. also the

  1545. instructor

  1546. to indicate

  1547. the steps

  1548. in which

  1549. we

  1550. deliberately

  1551. walk,

  1552. kind of

  1553. in the

  1554. Spirit's

  1555. choreography.

  1556. That's what

  1557. we're doing

  1558. there.

  1559. So just

  1560. as we

  1561. actively,

  1562. consciously,

  1563. and deliberately

  1564. repudiate the

  1565. flesh,

  1566. we reject

  1567. to follow

  1568. the path

  1569. suggested by

  1570. the flesh,

  1571. likewise,

  1572. it's equally

  1573. vital

  1574. actively

  1575. to ply

  1576. the Spirit's

  1577. path

  1578. and deliberately

  1579. turn ourselves

  1580. toward the

  1581. things of

  1582. the Spirit.

  1583. This is what

  1584. Scripture means

  1585. when it tells

  1586. us to

  1587. set our minds

  1588. on the things

  1589. of the Spirit,

  1590. Romans 8.

  1591. Seek the

  1592. things that are

  1593. above,

  1594. set our minds

  1595. on things above,

  1596. in Colossians 3.

  1597. Or let your

  1598. mind dwell on

  1599. these things,

  1600. Philippians 4,

  1601. and so forth.

  1602. This sort of

  1603. active

  1604. resolve,

  1605. this posture,

  1606. will be

  1607. reflected in

  1608. our whole

  1609. way of life.

  1610. What we do

  1611. with our

  1612. leisure time,

  1613. those precious

  1614. discretionary

  1615. hours that we

  1616. have,

  1617. the books

  1618. that we

  1619. read,

  1620. the friendships

  1621. that we

  1622. cultivate.

  1623. Will these

  1624. choices play

  1625. out to

  1626. grieve or

  1627. quench the

  1628. Spirit?

  1629. Or will

  1630. they sow

  1631. to the

  1632. Spirit?

  1633. And especially

  1634. significant here

  1635. is what an

  1636. older generation

  1637. of Christians

  1638. called the

  1639. diligent use

  1640. of the means

  1641. of grace.

  1642. In other

  1643. words,

  1644. availing

  1645. ourselves

  1646. very prodigally

  1647. of those

  1648. means that

  1649. God has

  1650. particularly

  1651. established

  1652. and appointed

  1653. for our

  1654. growth in

  1655. grace.

  1656. He's given

  1657. us some

  1658. really good

  1659. fat paths

  1660. to grow

  1661. in grace,

  1662. such as

  1663. maybe the

  1664. disciplined

  1665. practice of

  1666. prayer,

  1667. meditation,

  1668. hiding God's

  1669. word in our

  1670. heart,

  1671. attending upon

  1672. the ministry

  1673. of the word,

  1674. corporate

  1675. worship,

  1676. remembering

  1677. Christ's

  1678. death

  1679. in the

  1680. cup,

  1681. and so

  1682. forth.

  1683. these

  1684. things.

  1685. So we

  1686. ought not

  1687. to

  1688. simply

  1689. wait

  1690. to be

  1691. prompted

  1692. by the

  1693. impulse

  1694. of the

  1695. Spirit.

  1696. That's the

  1697. passive side.

  1698. Okay,

  1699. if the

  1700. Spirit does

  1701. prompt us,

  1702. yield,

  1703. but we

  1704. don't just

  1705. wait for

  1706. the promptings

  1707. of the

  1708. Spirit.

  1709. We need

  1710. to be

  1711. forming

  1712. holy

  1713. resolves

  1714. and

  1715. resolutions

  1716. on the

  1717. basis of

  1718. what the

  1719. Spirit has

  1720. clearly mapped

  1721. out in

  1722. his word.

  1723. I think

  1724. of the

  1725. young

  1726. Jonathan

  1727. Edwards

  1728. during his

  1729. college

  1730. days.

  1731. He

  1732. formulated

  1733. some

  1734. resolutions

  1735. that would

  1736. guide his

  1737. paths while

  1738. he was in

  1739. college.

  1740. Here are a

  1741. few of the

  1742. ones that he

  1743. formulated as

  1744. a college

  1745. student.

  1746. Here was

  1747. number 28.

  1748. Resolved

  1749. to study

  1750. the Scriptures

  1751. so steadily,

  1752. constantly,

  1753. and frequently

  1754. as that I

  1755. may find

  1756. and plainly

  1757. perceive

  1758. myself to

  1759. grow in

  1760. the knowledge

  1761. of the

  1762. same.

  1763. Number

  1764. 30.

  1765. Resolved

  1766. to strive

  1767. to my

  1768. utmost

  1769. every week

  1770. to be

  1771. brought

  1772. higher in

  1773. religion

  1774. and do

  1775. a higher

  1776. exercise

  1777. of grace

  1778. than I

  1779. was the

  1780. week before.

  1781. Wow!

  1782. He wants

  1783. to be so

  1784. diligent

  1785. about his

  1786. growth

  1787. that there's

  1788. a, you

  1789. could actually

  1790. tell the

  1791. difference from

  1792. week to

  1793. week.

  1794. Yeah, I'm

  1795. growing.

  1796. I'm

  1797. growing.

  1798. Ah!

  1799. 43.

  1800. Resolved.

  1801. Never

  1802. henceforward

  1803. till I die

  1804. to act as

  1805. if I were

  1806. in any

  1807. way my

  1808. own,

  1809. but entirely

  1810. and altogether

  1811. Christ's.

  1812. Well, these

  1813. are three of,

  1814. I think it's

  1815. 70,

  1816. 70 that we

  1817. find in his

  1818. diaries.

  1819. Well, this is

  1820. just an

  1821. example of

  1822. the active

  1823. walking in

  1824. the way of

  1825. the Spirit.

  1826. And this

  1827. then is

  1828. the dynamic

  1829. of how we

  1830. are progressively

  1831. transformed

  1832. into the

  1833. image of

  1834. Christ.

  1835. We must

  1836. actively

  1837. crucify our

  1838. flesh and

  1839. actively walk

  1840. in the steps

  1841. of the Spirit

  1842. along with

  1843. passively

  1844. yielding to

  1845. the Spirit's

  1846. promptings.

  1847. And as

  1848. we do

  1849. this,

  1850. the layers

  1851. of tarnish

  1852. will begin

  1853. to come

  1854. off and

  1855. we will

  1856. begin to

  1857. sparkle with

  1858. the reflected

  1859. light of

  1860. the glory

  1861. of Christ.

  1862. This is

  1863. how the

  1864. Spirit will

  1865. manifest in

  1866. us the

  1867. character of

  1868. Christ.

  1869. And as if

  1870. this were

  1871. not enough,

  1872. we begin

  1873. also to

  1874. make the

  1875. discovery

  1876. that as

  1877. we yield

  1878. to the

  1879. Spirit

  1880. and as

  1881. we stay

  1882. in stride

  1883. with His

  1884. steps,

  1885. we find

  1886. that all

  1887. along

  1888. He is

  1889. giving us

  1890. a greater

  1891. and greater

  1892. taste

  1893. for the

  1894. things of

  1895. the Spirit,

  1896. a deeper

  1897. delight in

  1898. them,

  1899. a more

  1900. settled

  1901. satisfaction

  1902. in

  1903. them,

  1904. a richer

  1905. relish

  1906. of them,

  1907. a taste

  1908. for glory.

  1909. Isn't that

  1910. wonderful?

  1911. Haven't you

  1912. noticed,

  1913. you know,

  1914. when I was

  1915. in college,

  1916. I used to

  1917. love to

  1918. eat Lucky

  1919. Charms.

  1920. And then,

  1921. I don't

  1922. know,

  1923. after college

  1924. I couldn't

  1925. afford to

  1926. get them,

  1927. and then I

  1928. got married,

  1929. and that was

  1930. the best

  1931. thing that

  1932. happened to

  1933. me after

  1934. Christ.

  1935. And then I

  1936. started eating

  1937. Alpen and

  1938. this good

  1939. stuff.

  1940. And one

  1941. day I

  1942. was at a

  1943. conference,

  1944. and they

  1945. had a little

  1946. box of

  1947. Lucky Charms,

  1948. nostalgia,

  1949. and I

  1950. went back

  1951. and I

  1952. tried to

  1953. eat that.

  1954. It was

  1955. like burning

  1956. my tongue.

  1957. It was

  1958. so sweet.

  1959. I thought,

  1960. whoa,

  1961. my tastes

  1962. have changed.

  1963. You know,

  1964. you eat

  1965. good food,

  1966. and your

  1967. tastes actually

  1968. get bent

  1969. toward the

  1970. better quality.

  1971. That's the

  1972. way it is

  1973. in the

  1974. spiritual

  1975. life.

  1976. Our

  1977. tastes

  1978. actually

  1979. change.

  1980. The

  1981. Spirit

  1982. gives us

  1983. changed

  1984. taste.

  1985. It's

  1986. wonderful.

  1987. And

  1988. correspondingly,

  1989. those old

  1990. dainties of

  1991. the flesh,

  1992. after which

  1993. our hungry

  1994. hearts

  1995. had so

  1996. hankered,

  1997. well,

  1998. they just

  1999. don't seem

  2000. to have the

  2001. same appeal

  2002. that they

  2003. once did.

  2004. It's like

  2005. the Lucky

  2006. Charms

  2007. stuff.

  2008. And they

  2009. just fall

  2010. away,

  2011. and are

  2012. not even

  2013. missed.

  2014. You see,

  2015. the dynamic

  2016. of glory

  2017. to return

  2018. for a

  2019. moment to

  2020. Jekyll and

  2021. Hyde,

  2022. is not

  2023. Jekyll,

  2024. kind of

  2025. precariously

  2026. holding out,

  2027. kind of

  2028. white-knuckled

  2029. and squinting

  2030. over the

  2031. strain,

  2032. just managing

  2033. to keep

  2034. Hyde on

  2035. a tight

  2036. leash.

  2037. We're

  2038. imprisoned in

  2039. the

  2040. straitjacket

  2041. of

  2042. strictures.

  2043. No,

  2044. and without

  2045. denying the

  2046. blood,

  2047. sweat,

  2048. and tears

  2049. side of

  2050. discipleship.

  2051. That's part

  2052. of the

  2053. dynamic.

  2054. But the

  2055. dynamic also

  2056. involves being

  2057. caught up

  2058. in a

  2059. swell,

  2060. kind of an

  2061. incoming tide

  2062. of joy,

  2063. a spirit-generated

  2064. swell of

  2065. profounder

  2066. delights and

  2067. desires.

  2068. Delights in

  2069. and desires for

  2070. the things of

  2071. Christ and his

  2072. kingdom to

  2073. which he calls

  2074. us.

  2075. You remember

  2076. in Homer's

  2077. Odyssey,

  2078. Odyssey,

  2079. when Odysseus'

  2080. ship passed

  2081. the island of

  2082. the Sirens.

  2083. Remember those

  2084. fabled creatures,

  2085. kind of half

  2086. woman and

  2087. half bird,

  2088. that would

  2089. beguile passing

  2090. sailors by

  2091. their entrancing

  2092. singing,

  2093. luring them to

  2094. shipwreck on

  2095. the rocks.

  2096. Remember that?

  2097. Well,

  2098. Odysseus,

  2099. to escape

  2100. the seduction,

  2101. he stuffed

  2102. his sailors'

  2103. ears with

  2104. wax,

  2105. but he wanted

  2106. to hear them,

  2107. so he lashed

  2108. himself to

  2109. the mast

  2110. and forbade

  2111. his men

  2112. to loose

  2113. him no

  2114. matter what

  2115. he might

  2116. do or

  2117. plead.

  2118. Okay?

  2119. Lash

  2120. himself to

  2121. the mast.

  2122. Well,

  2123. there's one

  2124. technique,

  2125. all right?

  2126. Lash

  2127. yourself to

  2128. the mast,

  2129. okay?

  2130. But,

  2131. remember,

  2132. when the

  2133. Argonauts

  2134. traced the

  2135. same route,

  2136. Orpheus

  2137. employed a

  2138. different strategy.

  2139. Remember,

  2140. Orpheus took

  2141. out his

  2142. harp,

  2143. and he

  2144. played music

  2145. of such

  2146. surpassing

  2147. sweetness

  2148. that the

  2149. sailors paid

  2150. no heed

  2151. to the

  2152. siren song.

  2153. And so it

  2154. is with the

  2155. spirit.

  2156. He

  2157. fosters in

  2158. us a

  2159. greater delight

  2160. in holiness

  2161. than in the

  2162. flesh is

  2163. touted fair.

  2164. So we

  2165. may walk

  2166. through the

  2167. streets of

  2168. vanity fair,

  2169. like Christian

  2170. and faithful,

  2171. and not be

  2172. enticed by

  2173. its wares,

  2174. for ours is

  2175. a better

  2176. portion.

  2177. And we

  2178. not only know

  2179. it to be so,

  2180. we got good

  2181. theology here,

  2182. we know it to

  2183. be so.

  2184. No,

  2185. we experience

  2186. it as the

  2187. better portion.

  2188. Even the

  2189. best charms

  2190. of this

  2191. world cannot

  2192. match the

  2193. sweetness of

  2194. fellowship with

  2195. the Savior,

  2196. that his

  2197. spirit works

  2198. in our

  2199. hearts.

  2200. I don't

  2201. know if you

  2202. guys have

  2203. seen this

  2204. thing, I

  2205. read for it

  2206. occasionally,

  2207. it's a

  2208. Spurgeon

  2209. morning and

  2210. evening,

  2211. wonderful.

  2212. Here's a

  2213. little bit

  2214. from him.

  2215. Nothing

  2216. gives the

  2217. believer so

  2218. much joy as

  2219. fellowship with

  2220. Christ.

  2221. He has

  2222. enjoyment,

  2223. as others

  2224. have, in

  2225. the common

  2226. mercies of

  2227. life.

  2228. He can be

  2229. glad both in

  2230. God's gifts

  2231. and God's

  2232. works, but

  2233. in all these

  2234. separately,

  2235. yea, and

  2236. in all of

  2237. them added

  2238. together.

  2239. He doth

  2240. not find such

  2241. substantial

  2242. delight as

  2243. in the

  2244. matchless

  2245. person of

  2246. his Lord

  2247. Jesus.

  2248. He has

  2249. wine which

  2250. no vineyard

  2251. on earth

  2252. ever yielded.

  2253. He has

  2254. bread which

  2255. all the

  2256. cornfields of

  2257. Egypt could

  2258. never bring

  2259. forth.

  2260. Where can

  2261. such sweetness

  2262. be found as

  2263. we have tasted

  2264. in communion

  2265. with our

  2266. beloved?

  2267. in our

  2268. esteem, the

  2269. joys of

  2270. earth are

  2271. little better

  2272. than husks

  2273. for swine

  2274. compared with

  2275. Jesus, the

  2276. heavenly

  2277. manna.

  2278. We would

  2279. rather have

  2280. one mouthful

  2281. of Christ's

  2282. love and a

  2283. sip of his

  2284. fellowship than

  2285. a whole world

  2286. full of

  2287. carnal delights.

  2288. What is the

  2289. chaff to the

  2290. wheat?

  2291. what is the

  2292. sparkling paste

  2293. to the true

  2294. diamond?

  2295. What is a

  2296. dream to the

  2297. glorious reality?

  2298. What is

  2299. time's mirth in

  2300. its best trim

  2301. compared to

  2302. our Lord

  2303. Jesus Christ?

  2304. Friends and

  2305. fellow

  2306. wayfarers and

  2307. warfarers,

  2308. do not grow

  2309. weary in

  2310. well-doing or

  2311. faint in the

  2312. fray for its

  2313. ferocity.

  2314. Keep

  2315. crucifying the

  2316. flesh.

  2317. Keep

  2318. yielding to

  2319. the Spirit's

  2320. prompting and

  2321. walk deliberately

  2322. in his steps.

  2323. And the

  2324. indwelling

  2325. Spirit will

  2326. make your

  2327. communion with

  2328. Christ so

  2329. sweet it

  2330. will more

  2331. than compensate

  2332. for the

  2333. wending

  2334. weary way

  2335. that marks

  2336. our path

  2337. to glory.

  2338. those who

  2339. take up the

  2340. cross and

  2341. carry it

  2342. soon make

  2343. the discovery

  2344. that the

  2345. cross is

  2346. carrying them.

  2347. Well, let me

  2348. stop there

  2349. and open it up.

  2350. I think we have a

  2351. little bit of time

  2352. for any questions

  2353. or comments.

  2354. was this

  2355. practical?

  2356. If there's

  2357. something that

  2358. doesn't seem

  2359. concrete or

  2360. practical,

  2361. hold me to

  2362. it.

  2363. We want this

  2364. to be

  2365. practical.

  2366. You feel like

  2367. there's some

  2368. actionable,

  2369. there's some

  2370. actionable

  2371. things?

  2372. Okay.

  2373. Comments,

  2374. questions?

  2375. Wow!

  2376. Maybe it was

  2377. okay.

  2378. I thought it

  2379. was clear.

  2380. Not a chance.

  2381. I really

  2382. appreciated your

  2383. description of

  2384. putting the

  2385. flesh on the

  2386. cross and

  2387. guarding it

  2388. from not

  2389. coming off

  2390. again.

  2391. But yet,

  2392. despite all

  2393. the warnings,

  2394. it does

  2395. come off

  2396. sometimes.

  2397. Yeah.

  2398. And I guess

  2399. the question

  2400. is,

  2401. you know,

  2402. how do you

  2403. reason about

  2404. that?

  2405. Because,

  2406. you know,

  2407. as you were

  2408. describing,

  2409. there's a

  2410. tonality

  2411. having gone

  2412. on there

  2413. in the

  2414. first place.

  2415. Excellent.

  2416. Here's a,

  2417. I was just

  2418. looking at

  2419. a,

  2420. in

  2421. 2 Timothy

  2422. 2,

  2423. 21,

  2424. 22,

  2425. somewhere,

  2426. maybe 23,

  2427. verse 23,

  2428. it's talking

  2429. about,

  2430. hey,

  2431. if you want

  2432. to be a

  2433. vessel fit

  2434. for the

  2435. master's use,

  2436. you've got to

  2437. cleanse yourself.

  2438. How do you

  2439. cleanse yourself?

  2440. And he gets

  2441. real,

  2442. real practical,

  2443. okay?

  2444. And,

  2445. and he,

  2446. and he talks

  2447. about flee,

  2448. got to be

  2449. fleeing,

  2450. and then

  2451. pursue.

  2452. You got to

  2453. be pursuing.

  2454. And then,

  2455. he kind of

  2456. gives some

  2457. concretes in

  2458. how to do

  2459. that well.

  2460. And one of

  2461. these is,

  2462. flee,

  2463. youthful lust,

  2464. with those

  2465. who call

  2466. upon the

  2467. Lord.

  2468. So there's

  2469. a sense in

  2470. which this is,

  2471. it's really

  2472. hard to be

  2473. doing this

  2474. solo.

  2475. So we

  2476. want to be

  2477. surrounding

  2478. ourselves

  2479. with,

  2480. with

  2481. friendships,

  2482. kind of a

  2483. community of

  2484. the committed,

  2485. you know,

  2486. and who say,

  2487. yes,

  2488. we are committed

  2489. to this,

  2490. let's do

  2491. this.

  2492. And we

  2493. talk about,

  2494. we talk about

  2495. how hard it is,

  2496. the temptations,

  2497. the trials,

  2498. we encourage one

  2499. another.

  2500. So don't try to

  2501. fly solo in

  2502. this.

  2503. Find some

  2504. people with

  2505. whom you can,

  2506. you can be

  2507. engaged.

  2508. Then again,

  2509. he says,

  2510. have nothing

  2511. to do with,

  2512. you've got to

  2513. decide right

  2514. off the bat

  2515. to just,

  2516. your stance

  2517. is one of

  2518. rejection.

  2519. If you're

  2520. always considering

  2521. it,

  2522. and you haven't

  2523. just,

  2524. in principle,

  2525. rejected the

  2526. flesh,

  2527. it's got to be

  2528. really hard,

  2529. it's going to be

  2530. tempting each

  2531. time.

  2532. But we need

  2533. to have a

  2534. stance of

  2535. rejection.

  2536. He says,

  2537. refuse,

  2538. or have

  2539. nothing to

  2540. do with.

  2541. You know,

  2542. there are a

  2543. lot of

  2544. alternatives in

  2545. our culture

  2546. proffered,

  2547. offered to

  2548. us,

  2549. alternatives to

  2550. monogamous

  2551. fidelity in

  2552. marriage.

  2553. Well,

  2554. you know,

  2555. one of the

  2556. helpful things

  2557. is,

  2558. you don't

  2559. have to

  2560. spend one

  2561. ounce of

  2562. imaginative

  2563. energy

  2564. considering those

  2565. other options.

  2566. Because you

  2567. can just

  2568. have resolved,

  2569. no,

  2570. it's just

  2571. not a

  2572. category.

  2573. Not going

  2574. to go there.

  2575. So some

  2576. of those

  2577. stances.

  2578. But then

  2579. it also,

  2580. Paul in

  2581. that same

  2582. verse he

  2583. says,

  2584. knowing what

  2585. these things

  2586. lead to,

  2587. and there's

  2588. a sense of

  2589. understanding

  2590. some of the

  2591. dynamics of

  2592. these sins

  2593. that often

  2594. get us.

  2595. Think,

  2596. doggone it,

  2597. every time I

  2598. walk down

  2599. that alley I

  2600. get mugged

  2601. and I lose

  2602. my wallet.

  2603. Let me

  2604. stop and

  2605. think this

  2606. through.

  2607. Is this

  2608. going to be

  2609. the best

  2610. alley to

  2611. walk down

  2612. to get

  2613. home?

  2614. And you

  2615. begin to

  2616. ask,

  2617. how does

  2618. the devil

  2619. bait the

  2620. hook?

  2621. What is it

  2622. that I

  2623. desire?

  2624. What are

  2625. some maybe

  2626. idolatries

  2627. beneath these

  2628. desires?

  2629. Because sometimes

  2630. when we fight

  2631. sin,

  2632. we're just

  2633. kind of

  2634. weed whacking

  2635. on the

  2636. top and

  2637. we don't

  2638. go down to

  2639. the roots

  2640. of some

  2641. of these

  2642. things.

  2643. So when he

  2644. says,

  2645. knowing that

  2646. these things

  2647. lead to

  2648. and knowing

  2649. that,

  2650. he's talking

  2651. about getting

  2652. an understanding

  2653. of,

  2654. well,

  2655. as Paul

  2656. writes,

  2657. you are

  2658. not ignorant

  2659. of Satan's

  2660. devices.

  2661. In other

  2662. words,

  2663. don't be

  2664. ignorant of

  2665. how Satan

  2666. keeps taking

  2667. you out.

  2668. C.S. Lewis

  2669. has this book

  2670. called Screwtape

  2671. Letters,

  2672. where it's

  2673. kind of these

  2674. demon tempters

  2675. are trying to

  2676. get you.

  2677. So sit down

  2678. and think,

  2679. okay,

  2680. let me do a

  2681. screwtape

  2682. letter.

  2683. How is

  2684. Satan going

  2685. to try to

  2686. mug me

  2687. and take

  2688. my lunch?

  2689. So those

  2690. are some

  2691. practical,

  2692. concrete ways

  2693. to do

  2694. this.

  2695. And then let's

  2696. keep talking

  2697. about this

  2698. together with

  2699. each other.

  2700. Hey,

  2701. how are you

  2702. finding?

  2703. Oh,

  2704. boy,

  2705. where are you

  2706. stumbling and

  2707. falling and

  2708. what are you

  2709. finding to

  2710. fortify you?

  2711. What can

  2712. buttress your

  2713. best results?

  2714. And then just

  2715. to try to do

  2716. this together.

  2717. So there are

  2718. a couple

  2719. thoughts.

  2720. Yeah.

  2721. Anything else?

  2722. Maybe a chance

  2723. for one more?

  2724. I just wanted

  2725. to say that I

  2726. like the way

  2727. you illustrated

  2728. putting it on

  2729. the cross.

  2730. One of the

  2731. things that I

  2732. haven't ever

  2733. heard from

  2734. when you gave

  2735. God to me

  2736. though I was

  2737. somewhat conscious

  2738. of it,

  2739. but the consciousness

  2740. is clear to me

  2741. now,

  2742. that when you

  2743. put it up

  2744. here,

  2745. that crucifixion

  2746. is not an

  2747. instant thing.

  2748. It's gradual.

  2749. And what the

  2750. gentleman was

  2751. just referring to,

  2752. you're seeing

  2753. this thing

  2754. still alive,

  2755. and as you

  2756. were saying

  2757. earlier,

  2758. it's calling

  2759. out like,

  2760. free me,

  2761. set me free.

  2762. Yeah,

  2763. right,

  2764. right.

  2765. But,

  2766. yeah.

  2767. Thank you.
