  1. Morning Church. Turn with me in your Bibles to the book of Ezra.

  2. The book of Ezra, chapter 1, it's on page 362 in your Bibles.

    Ezra 1 chapter mention

  3. Last week, Pastor Nick gave us an overview of Ezra and Nehemiah.

  4. And two books, they were originally one book, most likely.

  5. They still are one book in Hebrew Bibles today.

  6. This book about the people of Israel returning from their exile in Babylon.

  7. So this morning we're going to dig into the first two chapters of the book of Ezra.

  8. And I want to start by reading chapter 1 and the first two verses of chapter 2.

  9. So let's read these verses together.

  10. The book of Ezra.

  11. In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled,

  12. the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia,

  13. so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing.

  14. Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia,

  15. The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth,

  16. and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

  17. Whoever is among you of all his people, may his God be with him,

  18. and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah,

  19. and rebuild the house of the Lord, the God of Israel.

  20. He is the God who is in Jerusalem.

  21. And let each survivor, in whatever place he sojourns,

  22. be assisted by the men of his place with silver and gold, with goods and with beasts,

  23. besides freewill offerings for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.

  24. Then rose up the heads of the fathers' houses of Judah and Benjamin,

  25. and the priests and the Levites, everyone whose spirit God had stirred,

  26. to go out to rebuild the house of the Lord that is in Jerusalem.

  27. And all who were about them aided them with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, with beasts,

  28. and with costly wares, besides all that was freely offered.

  29. Cyrus the king also brought out the vessels of the house of the Lord

  30. that Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and placed in the house of his gods.

  31. Cyrus, king of Persia, brought these out in the charge of Mithradath,

  32. the treasurer who counted them out to Shesh-bazar, the prince of Judah.

  33. This was the number of them.

  34. Thirty basins of gold, a thousand basins of silver,

  35. twenty-nine censers, thirty bowls of gold, four hundred ten bowls of silver,

  36. and a thousand other vessels.

  37. All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand four hundred.

  38. All these did Shesh-bazar bring up when the exiles were brought up from Babylonia to Jerusalem.

  39. Now these were the people of the province who came up out of the captivity

  40. of those exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, had carried captive to Babylonia.

  41. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town.

  42. They came with Zerubbabel, Joshua, Nehemiah, Zerah, Rileah, Mordecai,

  43. Bilshan, Mizpar, Bigbi, Rehum, and Bono.

  44. Now, what's your family history?

  45. What are your roots?

  46. On the one hand, many people who live in modern cities are increasingly disconnected from their roots.

  47. Many of us live far from parents and grandparents and uncles and aunts and cousins.

  48. Some people move to cities for that purpose, to escape the oppressive patterns

  49. and unwanted constraints of their families of origin.

  50. Other people would prefer to stay where they grew up,

  51. but the educational and career opportunities are lacking,

  52. and so people are drawn to move.

  53. But those opportunities are often temporary,

  54. and they often lead to more travel and more transients,

  55. and it's hard to find a place to settle down and plant roots.

  56. Now, on the other hand, though many of us are disconnected from our roots,

  57. we can also see a growing interest in reconnecting with our roots.

  58. The past couple of years, one of the most popular Christmas presents

  59. has been DNA testing kits from companies like AncestryDNA or 23andMe

  60. that tell you where your ancestors may have come from.

  61. And there are also all kinds of websites and apps.

  62. Some of you are probably more familiar with them than I,

  63. but they can help you build a family tree

  64. and even connect with long-lost relatives.

  65. I know for some of you it's been very meaningful to meet a relative

  66. that you didn't know existed,

  67. or to learn about a part of your family history

  68. that had been forgotten over time.

  69. Why are we drawn to reconnect with our roots?

  70. Even though it can be inconvenient,

  71. even though it can be at times painful

  72. to learn about troubling or broken parts of our family history.

  73. Well, I would suggest this.

  74. As human beings,

  75. we don't flourish by trying to live completely disconnected from the past.

  76. Whether or not we want to admit it,

  77. we wouldn't be here today

  78. apart from those who have come before us.

  79. And part of being human is that

  80. we want to be part of something bigger than ourselves.

  81. Self-actualization,

  82. whatever that is,

  83. doesn't all by itself end up being that fulfilling

  84. in the long term.

  85. We want to be part of a people.

  86. We want to be part of a family.

  87. We want to be part of a legacy

  88. that has roots in the past

  89. and that will live on into the future.

  90. We want a place to belong.

  91. And that's in large part

  92. what these books,

  93. Ezra and Nehemiah,

  94. were willing to provide.

  95. Ezra and Nehemiah

  96. tell the story of

  97. the Israelite exiles

  98. returning to the land.

  99. We've entitled this sermon series

  100. Rebuilding the Ruins.

  101. The story covers over 100 years

  102. from 538 B.C.

  103. at the beginning of Ezra

  104. to about 430 B.C.

  105. at the end of Nehemiah.

  106. Now we don't know exactly

  107. when the book was compiled

  108. or who wrote it.

  109. Some have suggested

  110. that Ezra himself

  111. may have been responsible

  112. for compiling it.

  113. But the author

  114. drew from several

  115. historical sources.

  116. We have quotes

  117. from Persian government

  118. correspondents.

  119. We have census records.

  120. We have other official lists.

  121. And we have personal memoirs

  122. of both Ezra and Nehemiah.

  123. As we'll see

  124. throughout these books,

  125. there are many reasons

  126. to believe that these books

  127. are historically accurate.

  128. But Ezra is about

  129. much more than preserving

  130. historical information

  131. from a bygone era.

  132. What Ezra is doing

  133. is he's connecting

  134. the people's present experiences

  135. with their past history.

  136. These people have been displaced.

  137. Their ancestors were moved

  138. to Babylon unwillingly.

  139. And then they come back.

  140. Their lives have been

  141. sort of in upheaval.

  142. They're rebuilding

  143. a ruined city

  144. and a ruined nation.

  145. But Ezra wants them to know

  146. that they are not

  147. ruthless.

  148. They have a heritage.

  149. They have a history.

  150. And because they have

  151. a heritage

  152. and because they have

  153. a history,

  154. they have a mission

  155. in the present

  156. and they have a hope

  157. for the future.

  158. And for those of us

  159. who are Christians,

  160. if you are a Christian,

  161. this is also part

  162. of your spiritual heritage.

  163. Ezra Nehemiah

  164. is a part of our heritage

  165. that perhaps we may have

  166. neglected or forgotten

  167. or haven't spent,

  168. perhaps we're not as familiar

  169. with it as with some other parts

  170. of our spiritual heritage.

  171. But it points us

  172. to our mission

  173. in the present

  174. and our hope

  175. for the future.

  176. If you're not a Christian,

  177. if you're exploring Christianity,

  178. I hope that as we look

  179. through these books

  180. over the next couple of months

  181. and today,

  182. that they'll introduce you

  183. to the story of the Bible

  184. and to the God of the Bible.

  185. Because if you come to believe

  186. and trust

  187. in the God of the Bible,

  188. then this story

  189. becomes your story too.

  190. It becomes part

  191. of your heritage as well.

  192. This morning we're looking

  193. at the first two chapters

  194. of Ezra

  195. and I want to do two things.

  196. I want to show you

  197. the story that Ezra

  198. was telling his people

  199. and second,

  200. why that story matters

  201. to us today.

  202. So the story Ezra

  203. is telling his people

  204. in these two chapters

  205. is this,

  206. the same God

  207. who brought the children

  208. of Israel

  209. out of slavery in Egypt

  210. has now brought you back

  211. from exile in Babylon.

  212. The same God

  213. who long ago

  214. brought the children

  215. of Israel

  216. out of slavery in Egypt

  217. has now brought you back

  218. home from exile

  219. in Babylon.

  220. If you notice,

  221. Ezra ends,

  222. or sorry,

  223. Ezra begins

  224. with the two verses

  225. that 2 Chronicles,

  226. the page right before Ezra,

  227. end with.

  228. Okay?

  229. If you look back

  230. at that page,

  231. 2 Chronicles 36.22

  232. now in the first year

  233. of Cyrus,

  234. King of Persia,

  235. blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

  236. Beginning of Ezra

  237. in the first year

  238. of Cyrus, King of Persia

  239. goes on.

  240. So Ezra is very intentionally

  241. picking up

  242. on an unfinished story.

  243. It's continuing

  244. the story

  245. of Chronicles.

  246. Now,

  247. Chronicles

  248. summarizes

  249. the history

  250. of God's people

  251. from the creation

  252. of the world.

  253. The first

  254. part of Chronicles

  255. begins

  256. with

  257. a genealogy

  258. that goes from

  259. Adam

  260. to Abraham.

  261. It's basically

  262. summarizing

  263. in condensed form

  264. the entirety

  265. of the Old Testament

  266. from Genesis

  267. to the end

  268. of Kings

  269. in one book.

  270. So Chronicles

  271. just sort of

  272. gives you

  273. a compact version

  274. and highlighting

  275. certain things.

  276. Ezra is continuing

  277. that story.

  278. Intentionally

  279. and self-consciously

  280. he's continuing

  281. this story

  282. that has already begun.

  283. And specifically

  284. in chapters 1 and 2

  285. we see three

  286. significant parallels

  287. between what God

  288. did to bring

  289. the children of Israel

  290. out of slavery

  291. Egypt

  292. and what God

  293. did to bring

  294. the children of Israel

  295. back from exile

  296. in Babylon.

  297. So let me show you

  298. these three parallels.

  299. First,

  300. first parallel

  301. one,

  302. God works

  303. through a pagan

  304. king

  305. to deliver

  306. his holy people.

  307. We see this

  308. in verses 1

  309. to 4

  310. of Ezra chapter 1.

    Ezra 1 chapter mention

  311. Now,

  312. if you are familiar

  313. with the story

  314. of the Exodus

  315. we studied

  316. the book of Exodus

  317. last year

  318. but I'll sort of

  319. try to summarize it

  320. for you

  321. if you're not familiar

  322. with it.

  323. It's the story

  324. of God bringing

  325. the people of Israel

  326. out of slavery

  327. in Egypt

  328. teaching them

  329. his law

  330. and then coming

  331. to dwell

  332. among them.

  333. Sort of God

  334. making these people

  335. his own.

  336. And at the beginning

  337. of the book of Exodus

  338. we encounter Pharaoh

  339. the king of Egypt

  340. and he's the enemy

  341. of the Israelites.

  342. He is dead set

  343. against them

  344. from the beginning.

  345. He tries to get rid

  346. of them.

  347. He tries to exterminate

  348. them first quietly

  349. and gradually

  350. and then openly

  351. and he resists

  352. the repeated warnings

  353. of Moses and Aaron

  354. even of his own

  355. court officials.

  356. But what we see

  357. in Exodus

  358. is that at the same

  359. time that Pharaoh

  360. is the sworn enemy

  361. of God's people

  362. he also ends up

  363. being an unwitting

  364. instrument of God's

  365. purposes.

  366. So Exodus chapter 9

    Exodus 9:16

  367. verse 16

  368. God says to Pharaoh

  369. for this purpose

  370. I raised you up

  371. to show you

  372. my power

  373. that my name

  374. may be proclaimed

  375. in all the earth.

  376. See Pharaoh

  377. wanted to be

  378. in charge of everything.

  379. And yet

  380. what you see

  381. in the book of Exodus

  382. is that God

  383. was working out

  384. his sovereign purposes

  385. even through Pharaoh

  386. who was dead

  387. to death

  388. against God

  389. and his people.

  390. Exodus even says

  391. in several places

  392. God hardened

  393. Pharaoh's heart.

  394. In other words

  395. God judged Pharaoh

  396. by sort of

  397. giving him over

  398. to his own

  399. stubborn desires

  400. and plans

  401. and then working

  402. his purposes

  403. through them

  404. so that everyone

  405. would ultimately

  406. see that God

  407. and not Pharaoh

  408. was the true

  409. Lord over all.

  410. So in Exodus

  411. God worked

  412. through a hostile

  413. pagan king

  414. in order to deliver

  415. his holy people

  416. and in Ezra

  417. we see that

  418. same pattern.

  419. God works

  420. in the heart

  421. another pagan king

  422. to deliver

  423. his holy people

  424. namely Cyrus.

  425. Now Cyrus

  426. is not

  427. openly hostile

  428. like Pharaoh.

  429. Cyrus

  430. has a much more

  431. friendly

  432. and tolerant

  433. policy.

  434. We know about

  435. Cyrus from

  436. several historical

  437. sources

  438. not only

  439. the biblical text

  440. but from many

  441. other historical

  442. writings.

  443. He defeated

  444. the Babylonians.

  445. He ascended

  446. to power

  447. in 539 BC.

  448. That's the first

  449. year Cyrus

  450. came in Persia

  451. and in contrast

  452. to the Babylonian

  453. and Assyrian

  454. kings who had

  455. preceded him

  456. he took a much

  457. more tolerant

  458. policy towards

  459. conquered people

  460. groups and

  461. their local

  462. religious customs.

  463. So previous

  464. Babylonian emperors

  465. like Nebuchadnezzar

  466. had deported

  467. conquered people

  468. groups and

  469. had destroyed

  470. their temples

  471. and had confiscated

  472. their valuable

  473. artifacts and

  474. brought the images

  475. of their gods

  476. and the vessels

  477. from their temples

  478. to Babylon

  479. to sort of

  480. show off

  481. and say

  482. ha

  483. you see

  484. we conjured

  485. your gods

  486. we conjured

  487. your people

  488. and now

  489. we're going to

  490. show it off

  491. to the world.

  492. But Cyrus

  493. took a different

  494. attack.

  495. Cyrus was

  496. wanting to

  497. build a big

  498. empire

  499. but he thought

  500. better to

  501. use carrots

  502. than sticks

  503. shall we say.

  504. He said

  505. let's make

  506. people happy

  507. let's let

  508. people go

  509. back home

  510. let's let

  511. everybody

  512. worship their

  513. own gods

  514. as they

  515. please

  516. and then

  517. they'll be

  518. happier to

  519. you know

  520. they won't

  521. be as

  522. prone to

  523. rebel.

  524. You know

  525. they'll be

  526. on board

  527. with our

  528. big virgin

  529. empire.

  530. So

  531. archaeologists

  532. have found

  533. a place

  534. still in

  535. or commissioned

  536. by Cyrus

  537. explaining his

  538. policies in

  539. this regard.

  540. Here's what's

  541. called the

  542. Cyrus cylinder

  543. from 539

  544. BC or 538

  545. BC says

  546. Cyrus writes

  547. I returned

  548. the images

  549. of the gods

  550. who had

  551. resided in

  552. Babylon to

  553. their places.

  554. I gathered

  555. all their

  556. inhabitants and

  557. returned to

  558. them their

  559. dwellings.

  560. I settled

  561. in their

  562. habitations the

  563. gods of

  564. Sumer and

  565. Akkad whom

  566. the former

  567. Babylonian

  568. emperor

  569. Nabonidus

  570. had brought

  571. into Babylon.

  572. Then he

  573. says here's

  574. sort of the

  575. religious worldview

  576. behind it.

  577. He says may

  578. all the gods

  579. whom I

  580. settled in

  581. their sacred

  582. centers ask

  583. daily of

  584. Bel and

  585. Nabu that

  586. my days be

  587. long and

  588. may they

  589. intercede for

  590. my welfare.

  591. So he's

  592. basically hoping

  593. that all these

  594. other gods in

  595. sort of these

  596. far-flung

  597. provinces would

  598. pray to the

  599. head gods who

  600. he really

  601. believed in

  602. Bel and

  603. Nabu who

  604. were the

  605. Babylonian

  606. gods.

  607. And he

  608. thought you

  609. know they'll

  610. help out

  611. you.

  612. So that's

  613. sort of

  614. Cyrus'

  615. motivation.

  616. Cyrus was

  617. not a

  618. believer.

  619. He was

  620. not a

  621. believer in

  622. the God

  623. of the

  624. Bible.

  625. He did

  626. not believe

  627. that the

  628. God of

  629. the Bible

  630. was the

  631. one and

  632. only true

  633. God.

  634. And if

  635. you read

  636. verses 2

  637. to 4

  638. they're not

  639. a declaration

  640. of exclusive

  641. loyalty to

  642. the Lord.

  643. Cyrus

  644. sort of

  645. carefully

  646. avoids

  647. making a

  648. declaration of

  649. exclusive loyalty

  650. in those

  651. verses even

  652. though he's

  653. very respectful

  654. to the

  655. Jewish

  656. exiles who

  657. wanted to

  658. rebuild their

  659. own temple.

  660. So Ezra

  661. tells us that

  662. he extended

  663. the policy

  664. that was

  665. inscribed on

  666. that cylinder

  667. to the

  668. Israelites as

  669. well.

  670. He permitted

  671. and even

  672. promoted the

  673. return of the

  674. exiles to

  675. Jerusalem and

  676. the rebuilding

  677. of a temple

  678. to the God

  679. of Israel

  680. there.

  681. So this is

  682. the first

  683. parallel in

  684. Exodus.

  685. God works

  686. through a

  687. hostile pagan

  688. king to

  689. deliver his

  690. people and

  691. Ezra God

  692. works through a

  693. friendly pagan

  694. king to

  695. deliver his

  696. people.

  697. So that's

  698. the first

  699. parallel.

  700. Second

  701. parallel is

  702. in verses 5

  703. to 11 God

  704. provides the

  705. materials for

  706. his people to

  707. build his

  708. house.

  709. Now if you

  710. read Exodus

  711. when the

  712. people of

  713. Israel left

  714. Egypt they

  715. didn't leave

  716. empty handed.

  717. So Exodus

  718. 12, 35 and

  719. 36 the people

  720. of Israel asked

  721. the Egyptians

  722. for silver and

  723. gold jewelry and

  724. for clothing and

  725. the Lord gave

  726. people favor in

  727. the sight of the

  728. Egyptians so they

  729. let them have

  730. what they asked

  731. thus they

  732. plundered the

  733. Egyptians.

  734. In some ways

  735. it was a

  736. reversal.

  737. For years,

  738. decades the

  739. Egyptians had

  740. been plundering

  741. the Israelites

  742. profiting from

  743. their slave

  744. labor and

  745. now as they

  746. left the

  747. Israelites

  748. finally received

  749. some compensation.

  750. And later on

  751. in Exodus

  752. we see that

  753. those items

  754. were used to

  755. construct the

  756. tabernacle.

  757. The dwelling

  758. place where

  759. God had

  760. promised to

  761. be with his

  762. people.

  763. God provided

  764. exactly what

  765. they needed to

  766. build his

  767. house.

  768. We see the

  769. same thing here

  770. in Ezra.

  771. Verses 5 to

  772. 11, God

  773. stirred up the

  774. spirit of Cyrus.

  775. Verse 1, he

  776. stirred up the

  777. spirit of his

  778. people.

  779. Verse 5, and

  780. he supplies them

  781. with all that

  782. they need.

  783. Verses 6 and

  784. 7, all who are

  785. about to

  786. aid in them

  787. with vessels

  788. of silver,

  789. gold, goods,

  790. beasts, and

  791. costly wares.

  792. Verse 7 notes

  793. that Cyrus also

  794. brought out the

  795. vessels of the

  796. house of the

  797. Lord that

  798. Nebuchadnezzar,

  799. Babylonian emperor,

  800. 70 years ago,

  801. or sorry, 50,

  802. it wasn't 70,

  803. it was 50,

  804. about 50 years

  805. ago, had

  806. carried away from

  807. Jerusalem and

  808. placed in the

  809. house of his

  810. God.

  811. So again,

  812. there's this

  813. reversal.

  814. Right?

  815. What had been

  816. lost in the

  817. exodus to

  818. Babylon was

  819. now being

  820. restored to

  821. its proper

  822. place in

  823. the worship

  824. of God.

  825. And verses

  826. 8 to 11

  827. give us an

  828. inventory of

  829. some of those

  830. items.

  831. So there's

  832. second parallel,

  833. God provides

  834. the materials for

  835. his people to

  836. build his house

  837. in Exodus,

  838. and again,

  839. in Ezra.

  840. Third parallel,

  841. God organizes

  842. the people whom

  843. he has

  844. delivered.

  845. And this is

    Isaiah 2 chapter mention

  846. chapter 2.

  847. Now, when

  848. God brought

  849. the people out

  850. of Egypt,

  851. he organized

  852. them in the

  853. wilderness,

  854. and we see

  855. this especially

  856. in the Old

  857. Testament book

  858. of Numbers.

  859. People were

  860. organized tribe

  861. by tribe,

  862. and each tribe

  863. had its proper

  864. place.

  865. There were

  866. three tribes

  867. on the north

  868. side,

  869. three on the

  870. south side,

  871. three on the

  872. east side,

  873. three on the

  874. west side,

  875. and in the

  876. middle of the

  877. camp was the

  878. tabernacle.

  879. In other

  880. words,

  881. the Israelite

  882. camp was

  883. organized around

  884. the centrality

  885. of the worship

  886. of God.

  887. And the

  888. priests and

  889. Levites were

  890. responsible for

  891. the tabernacle.

  892. They were

  893. assigned specific

  894. duties so that

  895. the community

  896. would function

  897. as a cohesive

  898. whole.

  899. And that's

  900. also what we

  901. see here in

  902. Ezra 2.

  903. God organizes

  904. the people

  905. who he

  906. delivers.

  907. Psalm 68

  908. says,

  909. God sets

  910. the lonely

  911. in families,

  912. he leads

  913. forth the

  914. prisoners with

  915. singing.

  916. And that's

  917. what God

  918. does with

  919. the returning

  920. exiles.

  921. They're not a

  922. nameless,

  923. faceless mass.

  924. They're not

  925. simply an

  926. aggregate number.

  927. No, in the

  928. family of God,

  929. everyone has a

  930. place to belong,

  931. and everyone has

  932. a reason to

  933. rejoice.

  934. Now look down

  935. to chapter 2

  936. for a minute.

  937. We won't

  938. read through

  939. it, but

  940. notice how

  941. it's organized.

  942. First, the

  943. first two

  944. verses, we

  945. see the

  946. leaders of

  947. the community

  948. in verse 2.

  949. Beginning with

  950. Zerubbabel,

  951. who was a

  952. member of the

  953. royal line

  954. descended from

  955. King David,

  956. and Jeshua,

  957. who became

  958. the high

  959. priest.

  960. So those

  961. two will show

  962. up later in

  963. the story.

  964. Nehemiah is

  965. not the Nehemiah

  966. who comes

  967. 70 years later.

  968. I was

  969. a common

  970. name at the

  971. time.

  972. I was referring

  973. to someone

  974. else.

  975. Then a list

  976. of other

  977. leaders.

  978. And Nehemiah

  979. 7 repeats

  980. the list in

  981. verse 2,

  982. and includes

  983. a 12th name,

  984. Nahamani.

  985. So we have

  986. 12 leaders

  987. representing

  988. the 12

  989. tribes.

  990. So first,

  991. the leaders

  992. of the

  993. community.

  994. Then verses

  995. 3 to 35,

  996. we see the

  997. men of the

  998. people of

  999. Israel.

  1000. Then verses

  1001. 3 to 20,

  1002. lists those

  1003. who are

  1004. descended from

  1005. particular known

  1006. families.

  1007. 21 to 35,

  1008. we see those

  1009. who belong to

  1010. specific places.

  1011. Towns like

  1012. Bethlehem,

  1013. Nebo,

  1014. and Jericho.

  1015. So the

  1016. leaders,

  1017. people as a

  1018. whole,

  1019. verses 36

  1020. to 58,

  1021. we see the

  1022. temple officials

  1023. in four groups.

  1024. The priests

  1025. who had the

  1026. highest level

  1027. of authority

  1028. and responsibility,

  1029. the Levites

  1030. who served

  1031. under the

  1032. priests,

  1033. and then the

  1034. temple servants

  1035. and the sons

  1036. of Solomon

  1037. servants who

  1038. carried out

  1039. the more

  1040. mundane daily

  1041. tasks.

  1042. Then in

  1043. verses 59

  1044. to 63,

  1045. we have some

  1046. people who

  1047. could not

  1048. prove their

  1049. lineage.

  1050. So it would

  1051. be sort of

  1052. like somebody

  1053. today who's

  1054. lost all

  1055. their IDs

  1056. and has no

  1057. way of

  1058. retrieving them.

  1059. And so they

  1060. couldn't

  1061. demonstrate their

  1062. family

  1063. lineage.

  1064. And notice

  1065. how these

  1066. people were

  1067. dealt with.

  1068. they were

  1069. included with

  1070. the returning

  1071. exiles.

  1072. So they

  1073. were not

  1074. sent back

  1075. to Persia.

  1076. Even in the

  1077. Old Testament,

  1078. foreigners who

  1079. were pledging

  1080. their loyalty

  1081. to the God

  1082. of Israel

  1083. could join

  1084. the people

  1085. of Israel.

  1086. That was

  1087. true throughout

  1088. the Old

  1089. Testament.

  1090. And you

  1091. can even

  1092. notice some

  1093. of the names

  1094. in verses

  1095. 43 to 54

  1096. in particular

  1097. are non-Israelite

  1098. names.

  1099. Egyptian names

  1100. like Zihab

  1101. and Asna,

  1102. Sisera,

  1103. and others.

  1104. So over

  1105. time there

  1106. were people

  1107. from other

  1108. nations who

  1109. joined the

  1110. Old Testament

  1111. people of

  1112. Israel.

  1113. That was

  1114. happening

  1115. throughout

  1116. the history

  1117. by people

  1118. declaring their

  1119. exclusive loyalty

  1120. to the God

  1121. of Israel,

  1122. the males

  1123. in the family

  1124. being circumcised

  1125. as a sign

  1126. of that

  1127. loyalty

  1128. and they

  1129. would join

  1130. in with

  1131. the people

  1132. of Israel.

  1133. However,

  1134. verse 62

  1135. says that

  1136. those who

  1137. could not

  1138. prove their

  1139. descent

  1140. were not

  1141. included

  1142. in the

  1143. priesthood.

  1144. God had

  1145. specifically

  1146. commanded that

  1147. the priest

  1148. must be

  1149. descended from

  1150. Aaron and

  1151. so in order

  1152. to obey that

  1153. command they

  1154. decided let's

  1155. play it safe.

  1156. If we can't

  1157. prove that

  1158. these men

  1159. are descended

  1160. from Aaron

  1161. it's better

  1162. to play it

  1163. safe and

  1164. wait for

  1165. more clarity

  1166. in time

  1167. rather than

  1168. risk disobeying

  1169. God simply

  1170. because of

  1171. the present

  1172. uncertainty.

  1173. And it

  1174. seems like

  1175. at least

  1176. one of

  1177. these families

  1178. was later

  1179. proven to

  1180. belong to

  1181. the priesthood

  1182. because one

  1183. of the names

  1184. appears later

  1185. in Ezra

  1186. in the list

  1187. of the priests

  1188. so it seems

  1189. like they

  1190. were able

  1191. to work

  1192. that out

  1193. over time.

  1194. So finally

  1195. verses 64

  1196. to 67

  1197. we get to

  1198. the totals.

  1199. Now by the

  1200. time we get

  1201. to the totals

  1202. most of you

  1203. are ready

  1204. to go on

  1205. from chapter

  1206. two and

  1207. go on to

  1208. chapter three

  1209. and pick up

  1210. the story

  1211. and leave

  1212. this long

  1213. list behind

  1214. and you're

  1215. thankful that

  1216. I didn't

  1217. read the

  1218. list verbatim.

  1219. But some

  1220. of you might

  1221. be detail

  1222. oriented

  1223. persons

  1224. or perhaps

  1225. slightly

  1226. obsessive

  1227. compulsive

  1228. persons

  1229. and I can

  1230. understand that

  1231. I had to

  1232. deal with

  1233. that and

  1234. quite

  1235. prove that

  1236. but if

  1237. you might

  1238. notice here

  1239. an important

  1240. detail

  1241. or some

  1242. perhaps

  1243. troubling

  1244. details

  1245. if you add

  1246. up the

  1247. individual

  1248. numbers

  1249. in all

  1250. of the

  1251. lists

  1252. in chapter

  1253. two

  1254. they add

  1255. up to

  1256. 29,818

  1257. but verse

  1258. 64 says

  1259. the total

  1260. is 42,316

  1261. also the

  1262. list in Ezra

  1263. two is

  1264. repeated in

  1265. Nehemiah

  1266. chapter seven

  1267. but several

  1268. of the numbers

  1269. and a few

  1270. of the names

  1271. in that list

  1272. are different

  1273. and also

  1274. the temple

  1275. vessels in

  1276. verses nine

  1277. and ten

  1278. of chapter

  1279. one

  1280. don't add

  1281. up to the

  1282. total in

  1283. chapter one

  1284. verse 11

  1285. so some

  1286. of you

  1287. might be

  1288. thinking

  1289. what's the

  1290. deal with

  1291. these

  1292. discrepancies

  1293. can we

  1294. really trust

  1295. that the

  1296. bible is

  1297. true and

  1298. reliable and

  1299. authoritative

  1300. if the authors

  1301. don't even

  1302. seem to have

  1303. their math

  1304. facts straight

  1305. so before

  1306. we move on

  1307. let me address

  1308. that concern

  1309. with three

  1310. points

  1311. first

  1312. briefly

  1313. first the

  1314. list are

  1315. most likely

  1316. incomplete

  1317. by the

  1318. time Ezra

  1319. Nehemiah

  1320. was written

  1321. 430 BC

  1322. at the

  1323. earliest

  1324. the first

  1325. group of

  1326. exiles had

  1327. returned over

  1328. a hundred

  1329. years previously

  1330. and particularly

  1331. in that time

  1332. it's certainly

  1333. possible that

  1334. some of the

  1335. records of

  1336. particular

  1337. families

  1338. might not

  1339. have been

  1340. preserved

  1341. over those

  1342. hundred years

  1343. so the author

  1344. of Ezra Nehemiah

  1345. would have

  1346. simply recorded

  1347. the information

  1348. that was

  1349. available to

  1350. him at the

  1351. time

  1352. even if

  1353. information

  1354. about some

  1355. family groups

  1356. was no longer

  1357. available

  1358. second the

  1359. list in chapter

  1360. 2 seemed to

  1361. list the men

  1362. from the tribe

  1363. of Judah

  1364. and the priests

  1365. from the tribe

  1366. of Levi

  1367. if that's true

  1368. the extra 13,000

  1369. could be women

  1370. children or

  1371. members of the

  1372. northern tribes

  1373. it would not be

  1374. surprising

  1375. for the

  1376. perilous

  1377. four month

  1378. long journey

  1379. from Babylon

  1380. to Jerusalem

  1381. to attract

  1382. a disproportionate

  1383. number of

  1384. young single

  1385. men and a

  1386. smaller number

  1387. of families

  1388. with children

  1389. so that's the

  1390. second possibility

  1391. third it is

  1392. possible that

  1393. at this point

  1394. the original

  1395. text of Ezra

  1396. Nehemiah was

  1397. not copied

  1398. precisely over

  1399. the centuries

  1400. so for centuries

  1401. the books of

  1402. the bible were

  1403. copied by hand

  1404. and we have

  1405. many copies of

  1406. the bible

  1407. from many

  1408. different periods

  1409. of history

  1410. so we have

  1411. the Dead Sea

  1412. Scrolls from

  1413. 2nd century

  1414. 3rd, 2nd, 1st

  1415. century BC

  1416. we have the

  1417. Greek versions

  1418. a translation

  1419. of the Old

  1420. Testament from

  1421. Hebrew into

  1422. Greek that

  1423. also is from

  1424. sort of pre

  1425. New Testament

  1426. times

  1427. we have the

  1428. Old Testament

  1429. quotations and

  1430. a whole range

  1431. of other

  1432. historical documents

  1433. we have what's

  1434. called the

  1435. Masoretic text

  1436. which is the

  1437. Hebrew text of

  1438. the Old Testament

  1439. from the early

  1440. Middle Ages

  1441. and so you can

  1442. compare all these

  1443. copies of the

  1444. Old Testament

  1445. with each other

  1446. and by and large

  1447. we can demonstrate

  1448. that the bible

  1449. has been extremely

  1450. well preserved

  1451. over time

  1452. the overall story

  1453. of the bible

  1454. has not changed

  1455. and many of the

  1456. details have been

  1457. very carefully

  1458. handed out

  1459. to us

  1460. even the

  1461. widest differences

  1462. among all the

  1463. copies of

  1464. biblical manuscripts

  1465. do not call

  1466. into question

  1467. any significant

  1468. biblical or

  1469. Christian teachings

  1470. so even if you

  1471. take the copies

  1472. of the bible

  1473. that are most

  1474. different from

  1475. each other

  1476. you've got the

  1477. same story

  1478. and you've got

  1479. the same basic

  1480. Christian doctrines

  1481. but when you

  1482. compare the

  1483. different managers

  1484. over time

  1485. there are a

  1486. couple areas

  1487. that do

  1488. occasionally diverge

  1489. and one of the

  1490. areas that seems

  1491. most prone to

  1492. variation is

  1493. long lists of

  1494. numbers

  1495. have you ever

  1496. tried copying

  1497. by hand

  1498. a long list

  1499. of unfamiliar

  1500. names

  1501. and numbers

  1502. and then

  1503. have somebody

  1504. else do it

  1505. and then

  1506. have somebody

  1507. else do it

  1508. so this is

  1509. an area

  1510. where we

  1511. may not be

  1512. 100% sure

  1513. what the

  1514. original author

  1515. wrote

  1516. but having

  1517. said that

  1518. we can still

  1519. trust that

  1520. God inspired

  1521. the original

  1522. author to write

  1523. what God

  1524. wanted him to

  1525. write

  1526. that's what

  1527. the doctrine

  1528. of the

  1529. inspiration

  1530. of scripture

  1531. means

  1532. and that

  1533. God has

  1534. preserved for

  1535. us all

  1536. that we

  1537. need to

  1538. know

  1539. so even if

  1540. we can't

  1541. be 100%

  1542. sure about

  1543. some of

  1544. the numbers

  1545. and how

  1546. they add

  1547. up

  1548. we can

  1549. for all

  1550. these other

  1551. reasons

  1552. be confident

  1553. in the

  1554. trustworthiness

  1555. of the

  1556. scriptures

  1557. that we

  1558. read today

  1559. so having

  1560. addressed that

  1561. concern

  1562. let me get

  1563. back to the

  1564. main point

  1565. right

  1566. the same

  1567. God who

  1568. brought the

  1569. children from

  1570. Israel out

  1571. of Egypt

  1572. has brought

  1573. them back

  1574. from exile

  1575. and Babylon

  1576. right

  1577. in those

  1578. three parallels

  1579. God works

  1580. through a

  1581. painting to

  1582. bring back

  1583. his people

  1584. God provides

  1585. them with all

  1586. they need

  1587. to build

  1588. his house

  1589. and God

  1590. organizes the

  1591. people whom

  1592. he has

  1593. delivered

  1594. so that's

  1595. what Ezra

  1596. wants the

  1597. people to

  1598. know

  1599. at the

  1600. beginning

  1601. of the

  1602. story

  1603. it's the

  1604. same God

  1605. who's been

  1606. working all

  1607. along

  1608. now you might

  1609. say well why

  1610. does that story

  1611. matter to us

  1612. right

  1613. and this is the

  1614. second half

  1615. of the message

  1616. why does this

  1617. story matter to

  1618. us 2500 years

  1619. later

  1620. here's why it

  1621. matters

  1622. the same God

  1623. who brought

  1624. the children of

  1625. Israel out of

  1626. slavery in

  1627. Egypt

  1628. the same God

  1629. who brought

  1630. the exiles

  1631. from Babylon

  1632. is the God

  1633. and father

  1634. of our Lord

  1635. Jesus Christ

  1636. she's through

  1637. his life

  1638. death and

  1639. resurrection

  1640. Jesus accomplished

  1641. an even

  1642. greater

  1643. exodus

  1644. what did

  1645. Jesus accomplish

  1646. when he died

  1647. on the cross

  1648. he rescued us

  1649. from slavery

  1650. to sin

  1651. and Satan

  1652. and death

  1653. he opened the

  1654. way for us

  1655. to paradise

  1656. once more

  1657. Jesus came

  1658. to bring us

  1659. home to God

  1660. out of our

  1661. exile

  1662. out of our

  1663. lostness

  1664. out of

  1665. and back

  1666. into God's

  1667. family

  1668. with a place

  1669. to belong

  1670. forever

  1671. the apostle

  1672. Paul wrote

  1673. if you belong

  1674. to Jesus

  1675. to Christ

  1676. to the Messiah

  1677. you are

  1678. Abraham's

  1679. see Abraham's

  1680. children

  1681. and heirs

  1682. according

  1683. to the promise

  1684. of God

  1685. so if you've

  1686. entrusted yourself

  1687. to Jesus

  1688. this story

  1689. is also

  1690. your story

  1691. this God

  1692. is also

  1693. your God

  1694. so when we

  1695. read this book

  1696. about people

  1697. who lived long

  1698. ago and far

  1699. away

  1700. in different

  1701. historical

  1702. and cultural

  1703. contexts

  1704. we can still

  1705. trace the

  1706. fingerprints

  1707. of our

  1708. faithful

  1709. God

  1710. and Savior

  1711. we can still

  1712. see the same

  1713. God at work

  1714. who is taking

  1715. care of us

  1716. every day

  1717. and who

  1718. hears our

  1719. Christ

  1720. Paul wrote

  1721. in Romans 15

  1722. whatever was

  1723. written in the

  1724. former days

  1725. was written

  1726. for our

  1727. instruction

  1728. so that

  1729. through endurance

  1730. and through

  1731. encouragement

  1732. from the

  1733. scriptures

  1734. we might

  1735. have hope

  1736. so I want

  1737. to conclude

  1738. with three

  1739. specific ways

  1740. that Ezra

  1741. 1 and 2

  1742. gives us

  1743. mission and

  1744. hope today

  1745. first

  1746. God is

  1747. still sovereign

  1748. over pagan

  1749. political leaders

  1750. right

  1751. in Exodus

  1752. God rescued

  1753. his people

  1754. despite

  1755. Pharaoh's evil

  1756. designs

  1757. in Ezra

  1758. God brought

  1759. his people

  1760. home

  1761. through a

  1762. friendly decree

  1763. of Cyrus

  1764. now if

  1765. were up

  1766. to me

  1767. I would

  1768. always

  1769. vote for

  1770. friendly Cyrus

  1771. over persecuting

  1772. Pharaoh

  1773. but in both

  1774. cases

  1775. God accomplished

  1776. his purposes

  1777. and God

  1778. rescued his

  1779. people

  1780. now the

  1781. New Testament

  1782. teaches us

  1783. that as

  1784. Christians we

  1785. have responsibilities

  1786. toward our

  1787. political leaders

  1788. to respect

  1789. those in

  1790. authority

  1791. to honor

  1792. the law

  1793. of the

  1794. land

  1795. unless it

  1796. conflicts

  1797. with the

  1798. law of

  1799. God

  1800. to pray

  1801. for those

  1802. in authority

  1803. whoever they

  1804. may be

  1805. to seek

  1806. justice

  1807. and correct

  1808. oppression

  1809. but the

  1810. Bible also

  1811. tells us

  1812. in Proverbs

  1813. 21

  1814. 1

  1815. the king's

  1816. heart

  1817. is a

  1818. stream

  1819. of water

  1820. in the

  1821. hand of

  1822. the Lord

  1823. and God

  1824. turns it

  1825. wherever he

  1826. will

  1827. and otherwise

  1828. he would say

  1829. it like this

  1830. no matter

  1831. who is in

  1832. power on

  1833. earth

  1834. God is

  1835. still on

  1836. his throne

  1837. in heaven

  1838. and that's

  1839. something that

  1840. we need to

  1841. remember

  1842. today

  1843. we live in

  1844. uncertain

  1845. times

  1846. divided

  1847. times

  1848. tumultuous

  1849. times

  1850. American

  1851. Christians

  1852. today

  1853. can be

  1854. tempted

  1855. to line

  1856. up behind

  1857. one political

  1858. party or

  1859. another

  1860. to devote

  1861. ourselves

  1862. to one

  1863. candidate

  1864. or another

  1865. and to

  1866. give them

  1867. uncritical

  1868. and whole

  1869. hearted

  1870. support

  1871. but if

  1872. we are

  1873. Christians

  1874. our whole

  1875. hearted

  1876. allegiance

  1877. belongs

  1878. only

  1879. to

  1880. Jesus

  1881. Christ

  1882. he

  1883. alone

  1884. reigns

  1885. over

  1886. the

  1887. nations

  1888. in

  1889. righteousness

  1890. no

  1891. other

  1892. human

  1893. being

  1894. comes

  1895. anywhere

  1896. close

  1897. to his

  1898. majesty

  1899. his

  1900. mercy

  1901. his

  1902. justice

  1903. his

  1904. faithfulness

  1905. and so

  1906. knowing

  1907. that God

  1908. is still

  1909. on the

  1910. throne

  1911. can give

  1912. us a

  1913. steady

  1914. confidence

  1915. when the

  1916. world

  1917. feels

  1918. shaky

  1919. it can

  1920. give us

  1921. hopeful

  1922. perseverance

  1923. when the

  1924. world

  1925. seems hostile

  1926. and dark

  1927. and it

  1928. can give

  1929. us

  1930. humble

  1931. gratitude

  1932. when things

  1933. seem to be

  1934. going well

  1935. so that's the

  1936. first thing

  1937. that we can

  1938. hold on to

  1939. and remember

  1940. is that God

  1941. is still

  1942. sovereign

  1943. even over

  1944. pagan

  1945. political

  1946. leaders

  1947. second thing

  1948. that gives us

  1949. mission

  1950. and hope

  1951. is that God

  1952. still supplies

  1953. all we need

  1954. to carry out

  1955. all that he

  1956. stirs us

  1957. up to do

  1958. so God

  1959. stirred the

  1960. hearts of

  1961. his people

  1962. to return

  1963. and to

  1964. rebuild

  1965. the temple

  1966. but he

  1967. also supplied

  1968. them with

  1969. all that they

  1970. needed to

  1971. carry out

  1972. that task

  1973. now how

  1974. did God

  1975. provide

  1976. well

  1977. provided

  1978. through the

  1979. gifts of

  1980. neighbors

  1981. in Persia

  1982. some of

  1983. whom may

  1984. not have

  1985. even been

  1986. believers

  1987. verses

  1988. verse 6

  1989. all

  1990. more about

  1991. them

  1992. and he

  1993. provided

  1994. in part

  1995. through a

  1996. grant

  1997. from the

  1998. Persian

  1999. government

  2000. surprise

  2001. right

  2002. and

  2003. most of

  2004. all he

  2005. provided

  2006. with the

  2007. freely

  2008. given

  2009. offerings

  2010. of his

  2011. own

  2012. people

  2013. chapter 2

  2014. verses 68

  2015. and 69

  2016. God supplies

  2017. what we need

  2018. to carry out

  2019. what he

  2020. wants us

  2021. to do

  2022. now

  2023. this principle

  2024. can be

  2025. misused

  2026. in a variety

  2027. of ways

  2028. one way

  2029. it can be

  2030. misused

  2031. is to insist

  2032. that I

  2033. know exactly

  2034. what God

  2035. has stirred

  2036. us up

  2037. to do

  2038. and therefore

  2039. everybody else

  2040. better get

  2041. behind me

  2042. 100%

  2043. and not ask

  2044. any questions

  2045. otherwise

  2046. they're

  2047. disobey

  2048. God

  2049. but that's

  2050. presumptuous

  2051. often that's

  2052. simply fearful

  2053. we have to

  2054. be humble

  2055. enough to

  2056. admit that

  2057. we don't

  2058. always see

  2059. everything

  2060. clearly

  2061. from the

  2062. start

  2063. and sometimes

  2064. we need

  2065. to change

  2066. course

  2067. it's right

  2068. for us

  2069. to pursue

  2070. plans

  2071. when they

  2072. seem

  2073. wise

  2074. and right

  2075. but

  2076. our plans

  2077. are not

  2078. always the

  2079. same thing

  2080. as God's

  2081. will

  2082. as the

  2083. elders

  2084. we've become

  2085. convinced

  2086. that this

  2087. building

  2088. project

  2089. is the

  2090. right

  2091. next step

  2092. for our

  2093. church

  2094. and as

  2095. the

  2096. members

  2097. we voted

  2098. overwhelming

  2099. last fall

  2100. to approve

  2101. it

  2102. so we

  2103. earnestly

  2104. desire

  2105. to see

  2106. God

  2107. supply

  2108. our

  2109. need

  2110. through

  2111. the

  2112. freely

  2113. given

  2114. offerings

  2115. of his

  2116. people

  2117. and we've

  2118. been encouraged

  2119. by some

  2120. of the

  2121. progress

  2122. we've

  2123. seen

  2124. we want

  2125. to encourage

  2126. ourselves

  2127. and our

  2128. plans

  2129. before

  2130. the

  2131. Lord

  2132. in

  2133. prayer

  2134. and

  2135. depending

  2136. on him

  2137. throughout

  2138. the

  2139. entire

  2140. process

  2141. and looking

  2142. to him

  2143. to lead

  2144. us in

  2145. all that

  2146. we do

  2147. we can

  2148. pray like

  2149. Paul does

  2150. in 2nd

  2151. Thessalonians

  2152. 1

  2153. Paul says

  2154. we always

  2155. pray for

  2156. you

  2157. that our

  2158. God

  2159. may

  2160. fulfill

  2161. every

  2162. resolve

  2163. for good

  2164. and every

  2165. work of

  2166. faith

  2167. by his

  2168. power

  2169. so that

  2170. the name

  2171. of our

  2172. Lord

  2173. Jesus

  2174. may be

  2175. glorified

  2176. in you

  2177. and you

  2178. in him

  2179. that's

  2180. the purpose

  2181. that we

  2182. need to be

  2183. seeking in

  2184. everything we

  2185. do

  2186. you know

  2187. sometimes it

  2188. matters

  2189. less what

  2190. you do

  2191. and it

  2192. matters more

  2193. how we

  2194. do it

  2195. are we

  2196. doing it

  2197. so that

  2198. the name

  2199. of God

  2200. the name

  2201. of Jesus

  2202. would be

  2203. seen as

  2204. beautiful

  2205. and glorious

  2206. and the

  2207. people would

  2208. be blessed

  2209. so let's

  2210. pray that

  2211. God would

  2212. fulfill

  2213. every

  2214. resolve for

  2215. good

  2216. and every

  2217. work

  2218. motivated

  2219. by faith

  2220. that God

  2221. wouldn't

  2222. leave us

  2223. half finished

  2224. but he would

  2225. carry us

  2226. all the way

  2227. through

  2228. and guide

  2229. us to

  2230. the end

  2231. so that's

  2232. the second

  2233. thing God

  2234. supplies what

  2235. we need

  2236. to do what

  2237. he stirred

  2238. us up to

  2239. do

  2240. third

  2241. we can be

  2242. encouraged that

  2243. God still

  2244. organizes the

  2245. people whom

  2246. he has

  2247. delivered

  2248. God sets

  2249. the lonely

  2250. in families

  2251. and he leads

  2252. forth the

  2253. prisoners with

  2254. singing

  2255. everyone has

  2256. a place to

  2257. belong in the

  2258. family of God

  2259. and everyone

  2260. has a reason

  2261. to rejoice

  2262. have you found

  2263. your place to

  2264. belong

  2265. here

  2266. or in

  2267. some other

  2268. local

  2269. expression of

  2270. the family

  2271. of God

  2272. most of you

  2273. have been

  2274. coming to

  2275. Trinity for a

  2276. little while

  2277. you have

  2278. probably noticed

  2279. we have this

  2280. thing called

  2281. membership

  2282. and among

  2283. other things

  2284. when you

  2285. become a

  2286. member

  2287. we add

  2288. your name

  2289. to a

  2290. list

  2291. like the

  2292. list in

  2293. chapter 2

  2294. but you

  2295. know what

  2296. we use

  2297. that list

  2298. the elders

  2299. and the

  2300. staff pray

  2301. through that

  2302. list

  2303. we pray

  2304. for about

  2305. 10 members

  2306. by name

  2307. alphabetically

  2308. every week

  2309. at staff

  2310. meeting

  2311. and at least

  2312. once a year

  2313. the elders

  2314. try to

  2315. connect with

  2316. everyone on

  2317. that list

  2318. to specifically

  2319. ask how

  2320. at the very

  2321. least

  2322. how can we

  2323. be praying

  2324. for you

  2325. to be

  2326. growing in

  2327. your water

  2328. with Jesus

  2329. and if

  2330. you're on

  2331. that list

  2332. and if

  2333. you just

  2334. sort of

  2335. disappear

  2336. and don't

  2337. come to

  2338. church for

  2339. several weeks

  2340. or a couple

  2341. months

  2342. we'll eventually

  2343. reach out to

  2344. you and say

  2345. we love you

  2346. and we miss

  2347. you

  2348. and can we

  2349. pray with you

  2350. can we help

  2351. you

  2352. the bible

  2353. tells us

  2354. not to

  2355. forsake

  2356. assembly

  2357. together

  2358. we don't

  2359. want to

  2360. let you

  2361. just drift

  2362. away

  2363. easily

  2364. you see

  2365. as the elders

  2366. we believe

  2367. that we have

  2368. a particular

  2369. responsibility

  2370. before God

  2371. to spiritually

  2372. care for

  2373. everyone

  2374. who says

  2375. count me

  2376. in

  2377. and put me

  2378. on that list

  2379. because I belong

  2380. to Jesus

  2381. and he's put me

  2382. on the list

  2383. in heaven

  2384. so I want to

  2385. put myself

  2386. on the list

  2387. in a local

  2388. family of

  2389. believers

  2390. on earth

  2391. so that as

  2392. the elders

  2393. as God's

  2394. under shepherds

  2395. care for me

  2396. I can be

  2397. reminded that I

  2398. have a great

  2399. shepherd in

  2400. heaven

  2401. who will never

  2402. forget me

  2403. and who will

  2404. not just let me

  2405. drift away

  2406. and who will

  2407. pray and who

  2408. is always

  2409. interceding

  2410. for me

  2411. you see

  2412. that's what

  2413. membership

  2414. is about

  2415. it's being

  2416. reminded that

  2417. we have a

  2418. faithful shepherd

  2419. who is always

  2420. looking after

  2421. us

  2422. so find a

  2423. place to

  2424. belong

  2425. whether it's

  2426. here or in

  2427. some family

  2428. of Christian

  2429. believers

  2430. and get on

  2431. that list

  2432. finally

  2433. you have a

  2434. reason to

  2435. rejoice

  2436. not only a

  2437. place to

  2438. belong

  2439. but we

  2440. have a

  2441. place to

  2442. belong

  2443. we have

  2444. a reason

  2445. to rejoice

  2446. that's why

  2447. we read

  2448. Psalm 126

  2449. earlier

  2450. when the

  2451. Lord restored

  2452. the fortunes

  2453. of Zion

  2454. we were

  2455. like those

  2456. who dreamed

  2457. and our

  2458. mouths were

  2459. filled with

  2460. laughter

  2461. and our

  2462. tongues

  2463. chouts

  2464. of joy

  2465. the Lord

  2466. has done

  2467. great things

  2468. for us

  2469. we are

  2470. glad

  2471. when we

  2472. know what

  2473. God has

  2474. done for

  2475. us in

  2476. Jesus

  2477. Christ

  2478. that he

  2479. loves us

  2480. that he

  2481. has reached

  2482. out to

  2483. us

  2484. that he

  2485. has called

  2486. us to

  2487. belong to

  2488. him

  2489. and know

  2490. his love

  2491. and be

  2492. assured of

  2493. his grace

  2494. and that he

  2495. will never

  2496. leave us or

  2497. forsake us

  2498. and that he's

  2499. going to walk

  2500. with us and

  2501. bring us all

  2502. the way to

  2503. our true

  2504. home in

  2505. heaven

  2506. that gives

  2507. us a joy

  2508. that sustains

  2509. us through

  2510. every trial

  2511. and difficulty

  2512. and disappointment

  2513. we know

  2514. we have

  2515. roots

  2516. in what God

  2517. has done in

  2518. the past

  2519. and we know

  2520. that we have

  2521. a hope for

  2522. the future

  2523. because the

  2524. same God

  2525. is going

  2526. to be with

  2527. us as we

  2528. move forward

  2529. let's pray

  2530. father thank you

  2531. for your

  2532. faithfulness

  2533. to the people

  2534. of Israel

  2535. thank you that

  2536. as we see

  2537. your faithfulness

  2538. to them in the

  2539. scriptures that

  2540. we can be

  2541. reminded of

  2542. your faithfulness

  2543. to us

  2544. we pray

  2545. that you

  2546. would draw

  2547. us to

  2548. near to you

  2549. and renew

  2550. our joy

  2551. today

  2552. Lord as we

  2553. celebrate the

  2554. Lord's Supper

  2555. renew our joy

  2556. we pray in

  2557. Jesus name

  2558. l relieve

  2559. of the

  2560. Jesus name

  2561. to the

  2562. Lord as we

  2563. have

  2564. to

  2565. best

  2566. to

  2567. ios

  2568. and

  2569. to
