  1. Well, why don't I pray and we'll get started. I'm excited to get into this topic this morning.

  2. Heavenly Father, thank you so much that you've given us everything in Christ Jesus.

  3. That we, although lost and all but obliterated in our sinfulness, you came, condescended yourself in the person of your Son, Jesus Christ.

  4. And that you've given us the ability to study you, to contemplate you, to renew our minds to a worshipful life that anticipates the glory that we have in you.

  5. Help us focus on you this morning.

  6. Let everything that is said be said to your glory.

  7. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  8. Well, today the topic is the image of God in Christ.

  9. And the technical term is the imago substantialis, the essential image of God that's in Christ Jesus.

  10. I'm excited to get into that.

  11. But today we're going to recap a little bit first and talk about the image of God in man first.

  12. There are a few steps that we have to take before we get directly into the image of God in Christ.

  13. So you'll recall that last week, if you were here, we looked at Psalm 8 as well as Genesis 1 and 2.

  14. And we concluded that the image of God in humanity is humanity itself, united in both body and soul.

  15. It's everything that pertains to the human being.

  16. And that's important for how we reflect God and his goodness in creation.

  17. But it's also important secondarily and related to the first for ethics.

  18. We talked about that a little bit.

  19. In fact, there's a deep significance there.

  20. Earlier last week, in fact, Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia signed in to effect the fetal heartbeat bill,

  21. which directly ties to this idea of what we consider to be a person,

  22. a focus on the actual human person in the womb,

  23. which the Washington Post noted.

  24. They had an interesting article.

  25. And it was interesting seeing some of the reactions as well.

  26. CNN's Christine Quinn says this,

  27. quote,

  28. When a woman is pregnant, that is not a human being inside of her.

  29. End quote.

  30. Contrarily, Psalm 139.13 says that it uses the same potter imagery from Genesis 2.7

  31. as saying that we're fearfully and wonderfully made,

  32. woven together by God inside the womb.

  33. In fact, David in Psalm 51.5 says that he's conceived in sin

  34. and refers to himself as an I or a me.

  35. And both of those passages are drawing on this cosmological language, right,

  36. of the image of God as consisting in the body as well as the soul in the womb.

  37. And this dehumanizing sentiment that we see today

  38. is an affront, in fact, to the image of God in man

  39. that's continuing.

  40. We see, in fact, in Genesis 9.6,

  41. it says that whoever sheds man's blood,

  42. by man his blood shall be shed.

  43. For in the image of God he made man.

  44. In fact, that verse talks about the image of God

  45. as kind of this grounds for our moral accountability before God.

  46. Where, of course, all sin is directed ultimately towards God.

  47. Now, this points to the deterioration of the image in God

  48. when we talk about sin and its effects.

  49. We used last week the phrase that we've been defaced but not erased.

  50. The image has been defaced but not erased.

  51. And that means that it breaks our communion with God.

  52. It affects our whole person, body, as well as soul.

  53. In Genesis 3.7, it talks about the shame that Adam and Eve had bodily

  54. when sin had affected it after the fall.

  55. In fact, Augustine refers to that verse as,

  56. quote, a novel disturbance in their disobedient flesh.

  57. Now, there is a plethora of passages that talk about this state

  58. as being, in fact, a kind of deadness, a separation from God.

  59. Ephesians 2.1 refers to it as being dead in our trespasses and sins.

  60. Colossians 2.13 says that you were dead in your transgressions.

  61. And Romans 6.23 states that the wages of sin is death.

  62. However, in that verse, Paul immediately qualifies it by saying,

  63. but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

  64. Lord, we're going to be talking about Christ as the very image of God,

  65. equivalently, substantially, and essentially.

  66. And we're going to be entering upon the threshold of high Trinitarian theology.

  67. There's going to be a lot that's difficult to understand today for me and for you,

  68. which is why we're going to stick close to the text.

  69. This is going to be another Lerman lecture sermon.

  70. And we're going to be staying in Colossians in particular,

  71. which talks about the sufficiency of Christ,

  72. or that classic Reformation doctrine of Christ alone

  73. as the boundaries for our faith and our salvation.

  74. It was John Calvin who wrote,

  75. outside Christ there is nothing worth knowing.

  76. And elsewhere, that Christ is all-sufficient.

  77. He says that in his sermons on Ephesians in particular.

  78. Particularly, we're going to be talking about Colossians 1, 15-22.

  79. However, as R.C. Reid once says,

  80. to know just how much we are indebted to Christ,

  81. we must know how much we are indebted to Adam.

  82. So in order to get there, we're going to turn to Romans 5.

  83. If you have your Bibles,

  84. we're going to be looking at Romans 5 real quick.

  85. Of course, the synthetic nature of theology,

  86. like we said last week,

  87. that means that we have to cover a lot of ground

  88. in order to get to who Jesus Christ is

  89. in order to understand the name of God and Christ.

  90. I'm going to read Romans 5, 12-21.

  91. Therefore, just as through one man,

  92. sin entered into the world,

  93. and death through sin,

  94. and so death spread to all men because all sinned.

  95. For until the law, sin was in the world.

  96. But sin is not imputed when there is no law.

  97. Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam until Moses,

  98. even those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offensive Adam,

  99. who is a type of him who was to come.

  100. But the free gift is not like the transgression.

  101. For if by the transgression of the one,

  102. the many died,

  103. much more did the grace of God

  104. and the gift by the grace of the one man,

  105. Jesus Christ,

  106. the bound to the many.

  107. The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned.

  108. For on the one hand,

  109. the judgment arose from one transgression,

  110. resulting in condemnation.

  111. But on the other hand,

  112. the free gift arose from the many transgressions,

  113. resulting in justification.

  114. For if by the transgression of the one,

  115. death reigned through the one,

  116. much more those who receive the abundance

  117. of grace and the gift of righteousness

  118. will reign in life through the one,

  119. Jesus Christ.

  120. So then,

  121. as through one transgression

  122. there resulted condemnation to all men,

  123. even so through one act of righteousness

  124. there resulted justification of life to all men.

  125. For as through the one man's disobedience

  126. the many were made sinners,

  127. even so through the obedience of the one

  128. the many will be made righteous.

  129. The law came in

  130. so that the transgression would increase,

  131. but where sin increased,

  132. grace abounded all the more.

  133. So that as sin reigned in death,

  134. even so grace would reign through righteousness

  135. to eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

  136. Now, that's a confusing passage.

  137. And in fact, it sounds like word salad

  138. when I'm reading it out loud, doesn't it?

  139. But it's actually a very important passage.

  140. Paul places it central in his logic

  141. for how we understand our relation to Christ.

  142. And historically,

  143. it was the center of a controversy

  144. known as the Pelagian controversy

  145. between Augustine of Hippo on the one hand

  146. and Pelagius, who's a renowned heretic,

  147. on the other.

  148. The controversy revolved around

  149. what's called original sin.

  150. Where does sin come from

  151. and how does it affect our person?

  152. It was sparked when Pelagius,

  153. who's a monk in Jerusalem,

  154. heard Augustine being read aloud,

  155. Augustine's Confessions.

  156. And the passage was this one

  157. from Confessions chapter 10.

  158. My whole hope is in thy exceedingly great mercy

  159. and that alone.

  160. Give what thou commandest

  161. and command what thou wilt.

  162. This meant that humans can contribute nothing

  163. to God's grace

  164. and that God's grace is everything

  165. in the act of salvation.

  166. However, that didn't sit well with Pelagius

  167. or his student after him, Julianus.

  168. And they caused quite a controversy about this

  169. by saying that man is completely neutral

  170. in his ability to choose good or choose evil.

  171. Augustine's response to this came,

  172. in fact, from Romans 5,

  173. the passage we just read.

  174. Again, it's a confusing passage,

  175. but there's a basic key to understanding it

  176. the next time that you have to read through it.

  177. And that's the key of considering it

  178. as an imperfect analogy.

  179. There's a comparison on the one hand

  180. between Adam and Christ,

  181. and there's a contrast on the other hand

  182. between their various functions.

  183. This is called,

  184. just to give,

  185. for those of you who are curious,

  186. it's called synkresis.

  187. It's the comparison of comparable persons,

  188. objects, or things

  189. with deficiencies or superiorities highlighted.

  190. It was a classic literary device.

  191. And this militates, in fact,

  192. against the claim

  193. that this was not doctrinally central

  194. to Paul's theology.

  195. Occasionally you'll see people

  196. say that this verse

  197. is too imprecise

  198. to make any theological claims about it.

  199. But Paul places it very central here.

  200. And note also that

  201. it's a cosmological argument.

  202. That is to say,

  203. it's grounded

  204. in how we understand

  205. creation is told to us in the Bible.

  206. So the comparison

  207. teaches the means of participation,

  208. either in Adam, on the one hand,

  209. or Christ, on the other.

  210. The Greek word in verse 14

  211. is tupos,

  212. which is a type.

  213. It's the pattern

  214. against which a coin

  215. is struck from the mint.

  216. And that speaks

  217. of that same function

  218. that Christ has

  219. as Adam does.

  220. That is to say,

  221. they're both representatives

  222. of their respective races.

  223. And look at verse 19.

  224. It says that

  225. the word made is used.

  226. And that word made

  227. is kathistimit,

  228. to ordain

  229. or to establish.

  230. And the actual Greek form of it

  231. means that it's a

  232. sole act of God alone.

  233. God places

  234. either in Adam

  235. or he places in Christ

  236. as representatives.

  237. Now, that's the comparison

  238. in how they're functioning

  239. as heads of their respective races.

  240. The contrast

  241. is their differing acts

  242. and results.

  243. The one act

  244. of being an Adam

  245. is transgression

  246. resulting in condemnation.

  247. And that has to do

  248. with that covenant

  249. found in Genesis 2,

  250. 16 to 17.

  251. You recall

  252. God is talking to Adam

  253. in the garden

  254. and he says,

  255. it says,

  256. The Lord God

  257. commanded Adam

  258. saying,

  259. From any tree

  260. of the garden

  261. you may eat freely.

  262. But from the tree

  263. of the knowledge

  264. of good and evil

  265. you shall not eat.

  266. For in the day

  267. you eat from it

  268. you will surely die.

  269. This is why

  270. we speak of having

  271. sinned in Adam,

  272. by the way,

  273. not in Eve.

  274. Eve ate first, right?

  275. But Adam

  276. was constituted

  277. federal head

  278. of the human race.

  279. That's also why

  280. the verse here

  281. talks about

  282. the imputation

  283. of one sin,

  284. not all of Adam's sins

  285. to the human race.

  286. So Adam was created

  287. by God

  288. to be the perfect

  289. representative

  290. for all humans

  291. after him.

  292. And that's why

  293. we inherit both guilt

  294. and corruption

  295. from him.

  296. Ephesians 2, 3 says,

  297. By nature

  298. we are children

  299. of wrath.

  300. And Genesis 8, 21,

  301. speaking after the flood,

  302. says that the intent

  303. of man's heart

  304. is evil from his youth.

  305. In Augustine's words,

  306. we are born sinners.

  307. Yet,

  308. on the other hand,

  309. there's a distinct

  310. contrast in this passage.

  311. The parallel idea

  312. to the one act

  313. of condemnation

  314. is the one act

  315. of righteousness

  316. resulting in justification.

  317. That is to say,

  318. on the one hand,

  319. the one man,

  320. Adam,

  321. brought sin

  322. and condemnation

  323. to all men

  324. who are under

  325. his headship.

  326. And on the other hand,

  327. the one man,

  328. Jesus Christ,

  329. brought salvation

  330. to all who are

  331. under his headship.

  332. Now,

  333. you may be asking,

  334. what does this have to do

  335. with the image of God?

  336. Well,

  337. it has everything

  338. to do with the image

  339. of God.

  340. Turn with me

  341. to 1 Corinthians 15.

  342. 1 Corinthians 15.

  343. And this verse

  344. is actually

  345. underlying Paul's theology.

  346. It shows that

  347. underlying Paul's theology

  348. is a primarily

  349. kind of cosmological sense

  350. of our origins in Adam,

  351. which is the basis

  352. for our participation

  353. in Christ.

  354. And he draws that out

  355. more in this section.

  356. The context here

  357. is that Paul

  358. is attempting

  359. to underscore

  360. the importance

  361. of Christ's

  362. actual resurrection.

  363. He's applying it

  364. to our resurrection.

  365. and in doing so,

  366. he's pitting Adam

  367. versus Christ.

  368. And he uses

  369. very similar language

  370. to that which we just

  371. read in Romans 5.

  372. In verse 22,

  373. for as in Adam

  374. all die,

  375. even so in Christ

  376. we'll all be made alive.

  377. And that's the ground

  378. in Paul's logic

  379. for our resurrection

  380. and even glorification.

  381. And the ground

  382. is the image of God.

  383. Let's read verses

  384. 38 to 39.

  385. But God gives it a body

  386. just as he wished.

  387. And to each of the seeds

  388. a body of its own.

  389. All flesh is not

  390. the same flesh,

  391. but there is one flesh

  392. of men

  393. and another flesh

  394. of beasts

  395. and another flesh

  396. of birds

  397. and another of fish.

  398. There are also

  399. heavenly bodies

  400. and earthly bodies,

  401. but the glory

  402. of the heavenly is one

  403. and the glory

  404. of the earthly

  405. is another.

  406. There is one glory

  407. of the sun

  408. and the glory

  409. of the moon

  410. and another glory

  411. of the stars

  412. for star differs

  413. from star and glory.

  414. So also is the

  415. resurrection of the dead.

  416. It is sown

  417. a perishable body.

  418. It is raised

  419. an imperishable body.

  420. It is sown

  421. in dishonor.

  422. It is raised

  423. in glory.

  424. It is sown

  425. in weakness.

  426. It is raised

  427. in power.

  428. It is sown

  429. a natural body.

  430. It is raised

  431. a spiritual body.

  432. If there is

  433. a natural body,

  434. there is also

  435. a spiritual body.

  436. So also is it written,

  437. the first man,

  438. Adam,

  439. became a living soul.

  440. The last Adam

  441. became a life-giving spirit.

  442. However,

  443. the spiritual

  444. is not first,

  445. but the natural.

  446. Then the spiritual.

  447. The first man

  448. is from the earth,

  449. earthy.

  450. The second man

  451. is from heaven.

  452. As is the earthy,

  453. so also are those

  454. who are earthy.

  455. And as is the heavenly,

  456. so also are those

  457. who are heavenly.

  458. Just as we have

  459. borne the image

  460. of the earthy,

  461. we will also bear

  462. the image

  463. of the heavenly.

  464. Now,

  465. I chose

  466. several passages

  467. this morning

  468. that were word solid,

  469. right?

  470. This is another example

  471. of a difficult

  472. and interpretively

  473. difficult passage.

  474. And I don't have

  475. the time to

  476. comprehensively explain it,

  477. unfortunately,

  478. this morning,

  479. but just to simplify,

  480. note the parallels here.

  481. There's the first man

  482. who is Adam,

  483. and he's described

  484. as being earthy.

  485. The last man

  486. is Christ,

  487. and he's considered

  488. heavenly.

  489. heavenly.

  490. In fact,

  491. the cave verse here,

  492. however,

  493. that I want to zone in

  494. is verse 49.

  495. Just as we have

  496. borne the image

  497. of the earthy,

  498. we will also bear

  499. the image

  500. of the heavenly.

  501. That's not speaking,

  502. in fact,

  503. of a spiritualization

  504. of the body,

  505. right?

  506. We're not going to be,

  507. when we're resurrected,

  508. intangible ghosts

  509. floating around

  510. as orbs in heaven.

  511. That's contrary

  512. to Paul's logic,

  513. in fact.

  514. Paul isn't

  515. a Platonist.

  516. He's not

  517. positing kind of

  518. spirit versus

  519. matter dualism.

  520. He's assuming

  521. that heaven

  522. is a very real place

  523. where God's presence

  524. is manifest.

  525. And in Paul's logic here,

  526. he's saying that

  527. Christ,

  528. as the image

  529. of the heavenly,

  530. is bringing

  531. a restoration

  532. of the relationship

  533. lost in Adam.

  534. This is total,

  535. in fact.

  536. The more I read

  537. this passage,

  538. I see the focus

  539. is on the body

  540. as essential

  541. for renewed communion

  542. with God

  543. as part of that image.

  544. We'll talk about

  545. this passage a bit more

  546. and the future

  547. state of glorification

  548. next week

  549. and what that looks like.

  550. Now,

  551. I want to focus

  552. on the centrality

  553. of Christ

  554. as the essential

  555. image of God

  556. into which

  557. mankind's image

  558. is restored.

  559. And we're going

  560. to be focusing

  561. on Colossians.

  562. We're doing a lot

  563. of Bible hopping.

  564. Good systematic theology

  565. is synthesizing

  566. Bible.

  567. Oh, they teach me

  568. how Yale.

  569. So our primary text

  570. this morning

  571. is going to be

  572. Colossians 1 here.

  573. And you'll note

  574. that this text

  575. is going to be

  576. speaking of

  577. Christ's perfect

  578. mediator,

  579. which is an important

  580. reality.

  581. We talk about that

  582. in my Bible,

  583. the Bible study

  584. that I attend

  585. on Thursday nights.

  586. Another example

  587. where we're talking

  588. about union with Christ

  589. and we ended up

  590. having to talk about

  591. every other doctrine

  592. attached to union

  593. with Christ.

  594. Christ.

  595. But it's important

  596. to understand

  597. that Christ

  598. is our perfect

  599. mediator.

  600. 1 Timothy 2.5

  601. says there's one

  602. God and one

  603. mediator between

  604. God and men,

  605. the man Christ

  606. Jesus.

  607. That begs the

  608. question,

  609. why Christ?

  610. Why is Christ

  611. our perfect

  612. mediator?

  613. Why couldn't it

  614. have been the

  615. Holy Spirit?

  616. Why couldn't

  617. God have chosen

  618. some other means

  619. to save us?

  620. Christ.

  621. This text,

  622. and that text

  623. in 1 Timothy 2.5

  624. I read,

  625. directly equates

  626. Christ's mediation

  627. to his deity.

  628. It was Stephen

  629. Charnock who said

  630. that Christ is said

  631. to be the one

  632. mediator in the

  633. same sense that

  634. God is said to

  635. be the one God.

  636. And in our passage,

  637. it talks about

  638. Christ's mediatorial

  639. role in verse 20

  640. as being reconciled

  641. all things to

  642. himself,

  643. having made peace

  644. through the blood

  645. of his cross.

  646. So why?

  647. Why does that

  648. constitute him

  649. as mediator?

  650. Well, Paul provides

  651. the theological

  652. answer here,

  653. beginning in verse

  654. 15.

  655. It says here,

  656. He is the image

  657. of the invisible

  658. God, the firstborn

  659. of all creation.

  660. For by him all

  661. things were created,

  662. both in the heavens

  663. and on earth,

  664. visible and invisible,

  665. whether thrones

  666. or dominions or

  667. rulers or authorities.

  668. All things have

  669. been created through

  670. him and for him.

  671. He is before

  672. all things,

  673. and in him all

  674. things hold together.

  675. He is also head

  676. of the body,

  677. the church,

  678. and he is the

  679. beginning,

  680. the firstborn

  681. from the dead,

  682. so that he himself

  683. will come to have

  684. first place in

  685. everything.

  686. For it was the

  687. Father's good pleasure

  688. for all the fullness

  689. to dwell in him,

  690. and through him to

  691. reconcile all things

  692. to himself,

  693. having made peace

  694. through the blood

  695. of his cross.

  696. Through him,

  697. I say,

  698. whether things on

  699. earth or things

  700. in heaven.

  701. And although

  702. you were formerly

  703. alienated and

  704. hostile in mind,

  705. engaged in evil

  706. deeds, there it is,

  707. that original sin

  708. concept, yet he has

  709. now reconciled you

  710. in his fleshly body

  711. through death in

  712. order to present

  713. you before him

  714. holy and blameless

  715. and beyond

  716. reproach.

  717. Now, Christ is

  718. spoken of here as

  719. the image of the

  720. invisible God.

  721. Now, I do have to

  722. distinguish that's not

  723. the same as our

  724. image.

  725. We have a similar

  726. image, a likeness,

  727. an analogy is the

  728. word theologians

  729. will use.

  730. However, Hebrews 1.3

  731. will be even more

  732. explicit to say that

  733. he is the radiance

  734. of his glory and the

  735. exact representation

  736. of his nature and

  737. upholds all things by

  738. the word of his

  739. power.

  740. His very nature is

  741. the Son of God,

  742. is what's being

  743. talked about here.

  744. That he is, in

  745. fact, God himself

  746. derived from the

  747. essence of God

  748. and therefore

  749. fully God.

  750. Christ once said

  751. to Philip when

  752. Philip was asking

  753. him, you know,

  754. show me the

  755. Father.

  756. And Christ turns

  757. to him, kind of

  758. offended almost in

  759. his voice and

  760. says, he who has

  761. seen me has seen

  762. the Father.

  763. In fact, that's

  764. the entire theme

  765. of the Gospel of

  766. John, right?

  767. The idea that the

  768. word became, the

  769. word became flesh,

  770. the word was with

  771. God and was God.

  772. And John 1.18

  773. talks about Christ

  774. as the only

  775. begotten of the

  776. Father, the

  777. monogamous, that

  778. is, he's uniquely

  779. the second person

  780. of the Trinity and

  781. he's the same

  782. essence as God the

  783. Father.

  784. Now, exactly how

  785. this works within

  786. the Trinity, a

  787. kind of Trinitarian

  788. dynamic inherent

  789. inside itself, is a

  790. great mystery.

  791. It's a profound

  792. theological mystery.

  793. It doesn't mean we

  794. can't articulate it

  795. well.

  796. But we'll never be

  797. able to understand

  798. it.

  799. In fact, the

  800. greatest theological

  801. minds, Augustine

  802. talks about it in a

  803. work on the Trinity

  804. and Jonathan Edwards

  805. talks about it quite a

  806. bit.

  807. He has this idea that

  808. the Father's perfect

  809. and he has a perfect

  810. idea of himself when

  811. he thinks about

  812. himself and that

  813. perfect idea of

  814. himself has to be

  815. equally himself because

  816. he is himself

  817. perfect and so that

  818. is the Son.

  819. And, you know, Edwards

  820. gets into this whole

  821. thing but there are

  822. certain problems that

  823. people have with

  824. that and he's

  825. accused of actually

  826. some people accuse

  827. him of a kind of

  828. heterodoxy because

  829. of that idea.

  830. It has some

  831. problems and I

  832. think it's more

  833. correct to simply

  834. hedge with Calvin

  835. on this one.

  836. And Calvin once

  837. said, quote, it is

  838. not lawful for

  839. mortal men to

  840. intrude upon the

  841. secrets of God.

  842. So the Bible has

  843. revealed very high

  844. Trinitarian doctrine

  845. to us but we may

  846. never actually be able

  847. to make sense just

  848. thinking about it in

  849. our hearts.

  850. And in fact, that's

  851. probably a mystery that

  852. we'll be able to delve

  853. deeper and deeper into

  854. in eternity forever.

  855. That's a wonderful

  856. concept.

  857. All we need to know for

  858. this present study,

  859. however, is that Christ

  860. is the self-same image

  861. of God.

  862. There's a regulation

  863. that goes on there

  864. when it talks about

  865. Christ as the image

  866. of God in the

  867. superlative.

  868. Calvin says this,

  869. quote,

  870. God is comprehended

  871. in Christ alone.

  872. In Christ alone.

  873. In fact,

  874. Francis Turretin,

  875. who's a Genevan

  876. pastor and theologian

  877. in the 17th century

  878. after Calvin,

  879. he draws out four

  880. points of why

  881. Christ himself had

  882. to be our mediator.

  883. And the third point

  884. is directly related

  885. to his nature

  886. as the image of God.

  887. He says this,

  888. quote,

  889. it was his to recreate

  890. who it was to create.

  891. What the word

  892. by which all things

  893. were made in the

  894. first creation

  895. should reform us

  896. after his image

  897. in the second.

  898. The image of God

  899. obscured by sin

  900. and all but destroyed

  901. could not be repaired

  902. in us better

  903. than by him

  904. who was the image

  905. of the invisible God.

  906. End quote.

  907. That is to say,

  908. Christ,

  909. as the image of God,

  910. is the pattern

  911. for our renewal.

  912. And that's exactly

  913. why Colossians 3.10

  914. says that we,

  915. quote,

  916. have put on the new self

  917. who is being renewed

  918. to a true knowledge

  919. according to the image

  920. of the one who created him.

  921. Or Ephesians 4,

    Ephesians 4:3–24

  922. verses 3 to 24,

  923. says that

  924. you be renewed

  925. in the spirit of your mind

  926. and put on the new self

  927. which,

  928. according to God,

  929. has been created

  930. in righteousness

  931. and holiness

  932. of the truth.

  933. Or,

  934. speaking of

  935. the image of God

  936. in Christ,

  937. Romans 8.29,

  938. for those whom he foreknew,

  939. he also predestined

  940. to become conformed

  941. to the image of his Son

  942. so that he could be

  943. firstborn among

  944. many brethren.

  945. John Owen writes this,

  946. the infinite wisdom

  947. of God

  948. had this design,

  949. namely,

  950. that Christ

  951. might be

  952. the pattern

  953. and example

  954. of the renovation

  955. of the image

  956. of God

  957. in us

  958. and of the glory

  959. that doth and see

  960. thereon.

  961. He is in the eye

  962. of God

  963. as the idea

  964. of what he intends

  965. in us

  966. in the communication

  967. of grace

  968. and glory

  969. and he ought

  970. to be so

  971. in ours

  972. as unto all

  973. that we aim

  974. at

  975. in a way

  976. of duty.

  977. Now,

  978. there's a final

  979. aspect here

  980. and that's the aspect

  981. of the Holy Spirit.

  982. So,

  983. I'm going to take a look

  984. real quick

  985. at John 16

  986. because I think

  987. that's an important

  988. aspect

  989. in how we

  990. have our image

  991. of God

  992. renewed.

  993. John 16,

  994. 7 to 11,

  995. Christ is speaking

  996. of what he gains

  997. by his ascension

  998. into heaven

  999. and it says this,

  1000. but I tell you

  1001. the truth

  1002. it is to your

  1003. advantage

  1004. that I go away

  1005. for if I do

  1006. not go away

  1007. the helper

  1008. will not come

  1009. to you

  1010. but if I go

  1011. I will send

  1012. him to you

  1013. and he

  1014. when he comes

  1015. will convict

  1016. the world

  1017. concerning sin

  1018. and righteousness

  1019. and judgment

  1020. concerning sin

  1021. because they do

  1022. not believe me

  1023. and concerning

  1024. righteousness

  1025. because I go

  1026. to the Father

  1027. and you no longer

  1028. see me

  1029. and concerning

  1030. judgment

  1031. because the ruler

  1032. of this world

  1033. has been judged.

  1034. That speaks of

  1035. Christ's

  1036. mediatorial mission

  1037. obtaining

  1038. the work

  1039. of the Holy Spirit

  1040. and that idea

  1041. in this text

  1042. the idea of

  1043. convicting

  1044. of sins

  1045. is found

  1046. in fact

  1047. in Titus

  1048. when Paul talks

  1049. a little bit

  1050. about regeneration

  1051. and he has

  1052. this kind of

  1053. liturgical

  1054. almost passage

  1055. it says

  1056. but when the

  1057. kindness of God

  1058. our Savior

  1059. and his love

  1060. for mankind

  1061. appeared

  1062. he saved us

  1063. not on the basis

  1064. of deeds

  1065. which we have

  1066. done in righteousness

  1067. but according

  1068. to his great mercy

  1069. by here

  1070. it is the washing

  1071. of regeneration

  1072. and renewing

  1073. by the Holy Spirit

  1074. whom he poured

  1075. out upon us

  1076. richly

  1077. through Jesus

  1078. Christ our Savior

  1079. so that being

  1080. justified by his grace

  1081. we would be made

  1082. heirs

  1083. according to the hope

  1084. of eternal life.

  1085. And that's

  1086. noted especially

  1087. in 2 Corinthians

  1088. 3.18

  1089. which says

  1090. but we all

  1091. with unveiled face

1092. beholding as in a mirror

1093. the glory of the Lord

  1094. are being transformed

  1095. into the same image

  1096. from glory to glory

  1097. just as from

  1098. the Lord

  1099. the Spirit

  1100. there's an equation

  1101. in these verses

1102. the work of the Holy Spirit

  1103. is what's returning

  1104. that image of God

  1105. and restoring it

  1106. to our hearts.

  1107. This gives us

  1108. a remarkable glimpse

  1109. into the divine plan

  1110. doesn't it?

  1111. The Father

  1112. sent the Son

  1113. the Son

  1114. saves his people

  1115. and the Spirit

  1116. secures the renewed image

  1117. of God

  1118. in our hearts

  1119. He is the seal

  1120. that makes certain

  1121. the image of God

  1122. forever

  1123. onto our

  1124. very hearts

  1125. that's why

1126. we don't have to worry

  1127. about

  1128. from this point on

  1129. having that same

  1130. kind of

  1131. mutable will

  1132. that Adam did

  1133. where we could

  1134. maybe fall out

  1135. of God's grace

  1136. Christ makes that certain

1137. and he makes it certain

  1138. through the Holy Spirit

  1139. Ephesians 1

  1140. 13-14

  1141. in fact

  1142. in him

  1143. you also are

  1144. after listening

1145. to the message of truth

1146. the gospel of your salvation

  1147. having also believed

  1148. you were sealed

  1149. in him

  1150. with the Holy Spirit

  1151. of promise

  1152. who is given

  1153. as a pledge

  1154. of our inheritance

  1155. with a view

  1156. to the redemption

  1157. of God's own possession

  1158. the praise

  1159. of his glory

  1160. that's an

  1161. ever increasing

  1162. intimacy

  1163. that we have

  1164. with God

  1165. we'll be able to

  1166. in fact

  1167. participate

  1168. in some way

  1169. in the Trinitarian

  1170. harmony

  1171. even into eternity

  1172. that's why

  1173. Christ prays

  1174. on our behalf

  1175. as our faithful

  1176. mediator

  1177. and high priest

  1178. in John 17

  1179. the glory

  1180. which you have

  1181. given me

  1182. I have given

  1183. to them

  1184. that they may be

  1185. one

  1186. just as we are

  1187. one

  1188. and I

  1189. in them

  1190. and you

  1191. in me

  1192. that they may

  1193. be perfected

  1194. in unity

  1195. so that the world

  1196. may know

  1197. that you sent me

  1198. and loved them

  1199. even as you

  1200. have loved me

  1201. father I desire

  1202. that they also

  1203. whom you

  1204. have given me

  1205. be with me

  1206. where I am

  1207. so that they

  1208. may see me

  1209. in glory

  1210. which you

  1211. have given me

  1212. for you

  1213. loved me

  1214. before the

  1215. foundation

  1216. of the world

  1217. now we've

  1218. been speaking

  1219. of a

  1220. renewed

  1221. spiritual image

  1222. right

  1223. and this is

  1224. happening

  1225. presently

  1226. for those

  1227. who are

  1228. regenerated

  1229. in Christ

  1230. Jesus

  1231. of course

  1232. that means

  1233. that we're

  1234. still awaiting

  1235. renewal

  1236. and many

  1237. of you

  1238. eagerly

  1239. waiting

  1240. for the

  1241. renewal

  1242. of our

  1243. bodies

  1244. in the

  1245. future

  1246. state

  1247. in the

  1248. likeness

  1249. of

  1250. Christ

  1251. right

  1252. 1 John

  1253. 3

  1254. 2

  1255. in fact

  1256. talks about

  1257. that future

  1258. reality

  1259. that we're

  1260. going to be

  1261. like him

  1262. when he

  1263. appears

  1264. because we're

  1265. going to

  1266. see him

  1267. as he

  1268. is

  1269. it's a

  1270. remarkable

  1271. concept

  1272. that our

  1273. bodies will

  1274. be raised

  1275. incorruptible

  1276. bearing the

  1277. image of the

  1278. heavenly

  1279. family

  1280. and we're

  1281. going to

  1282. have to

  1283. talk more

  1284. about that

  1285. next week

  1286. so there are

  1287. several points

  1288. of application

  1289. that we could

  1290. give

  1291. in fact I

  1292. think on a

  1293. pastoral level

  1294. the idea of

  1295. having our

  1296. image the image

  1297. of God renewed

  1298. body and soul

  1299. is wonderfully

  1300. comforting to

  1301. the believer

  1302. and a great

  1303. pastoral emphasis

  1304. let me just

  1305. give you a few

  1306. points of

  1307. application that

  1308. we could possibly

  1309. take away from

  1310. this

  1311. on the

  1312. pastoral level

  1313. it's very

  1314. humbling

  1315. doesn't it

  1316. because it

  1317. takes the

  1318. focus away

  1319. from ourselves

  1320. and it gives

  1321. complete honor

  1322. to God

  1323. it talks about

  1324. the undeserving

  1325. grace that we

  1326. have in Jesus

  1327. Christ

  1328. he didn't have

  1329. to condescend

  1330. he didn't have

  1331. to come down

  1332. from heaven

  1333. but he did

  1334. he took the

  1335. form of a

  1336. bondservant

  1337. and emptied

  1338. himself

  1339. as it talks

  1340. about in

  1341. Philippians

  1342. in fact

  1343. that's why

  1344. Paul says

  1345. in Ephesians

  1346. 1-6

  1347. he talks

  1348. about this

  1349. whole scheme

  1350. of salvation

  1351. being

  1352. to the

  1353. praise of

  1354. the glory

  1355. of his

  1356. grace

  1357. which he

  1358. freely

  1359. bestowed

  1360. on us

  1361. in the

  1362. beloved

  1363. and in fact

  1364. that's why

  1365. Ephesians

  1366. 2-8-10

  1367. then goes on

  1368. to talk about

  1369. how it's by

  1370. grace we've been

  1371. saved

  1372. by faith

  1373. and that not

  1374. of ourselves

  1375. it is the

  1376. gift of God

  1377. not by works

  1378. for we are

  1379. his workmanship

  1380. created

  1381. there's that

  1382. recreation language

  1383. in Christ

  1384. Jesus

  1385. for good

  1386. works

  1387. which God

  1388. prepared

  1389. beforehand

  1390. for those

  1391. who love

  1392. him

  1393. and that

  1394. causes us

  1395. to want

  1396. to

  1397. in the

  1398. words

  1399. of

  1400. Hebrews

  1401. 12

  1402. to look

  1403. unto

  1404. Jesus

  1405. the author

  1406. and perfecter

  1407. of our

  1408. faith

  1409. in him

  1410. is all

  1411. the sufficient

  1412. requirements

  1413. for everything

  1414. that we need

  1415. to grow

  1416. spiritually

  1417. and that's

  1418. wonderfully

  1419. comforting

  1420. all we have

  1421. to do

  1422. is look

  1423. to Jesus

  1424. Christ

  1425. Colossians

  1426. 2-67

  1427. says

  1428. therefore

  1429. as you

  1430. have received

  1431. Christ Jesus

  1432. the Lord

  1433. so walk

  1434. in him

  1435. having been

  1436. firmly rooted

  1437. and now being

  1438. built up

  1439. in him

  1440. and established

  1441. in your faith

  1442. just as you

  1443. were instructed

  1444. overflowing

  1445. with gratitude

  1446. wonderful

  1447. wonderful

  1448. doctrine

  1449. in fact

  1450. it goes on

  1451. we could draw

  1452. this even

  1453. further

  1454. to talk

  1455. about

  1456. our

  1457. sanctification

  1458. it isn't

  1459. that we

  1460. are necessarily

  1461. driving

  1462. our own

  1463. sanctification

  1464. yes we

  1465. are part

  1466. of this

  1467. process

  1468. but

  1469. sanctification

  1470. itself

  1471. that's

  1472. conforming

  1473. us to

  1474. the image

  1475. of God

  1476. is empowered

  1477. solely

  1478. by

  1479. the Holy

  1480. Spirit

  1481. Philippians

  1482. 2

  1483. 12-13

  1484. says

  1485. that we

  1486. are to

  1487. work out

  1488. our salvation

  1489. with fear

  1490. and trembling

  1491. for

  1492. it is

  1493. God

  1494. who is

  1495. at work

  1496. in you

  1497. both

  1498. who will

  1499. and to

  1500. work

  1501. for his

  1502. good

  1503. pleasure

  1504. and 2

  1505. Corinthians

  1506. 3-17

  1507. says

  1508. where the

  1509. Spirit

  1510. of the

  1511. Lord

  1512. is

  1513. there

  1514. is

  1515. liberty

  1516. right

  1517. so it's

  1518. the Holy

  1519. Spirit

  1520. that's

  1521. giving us

  1522. that ability

  1523. to want

  1524. to be

  1525. conformed

  1526. to the

  1527. Son

  1528. to want

  1529. to love

  1530. him

  1531. and pursue

  1532. him

  1533. and pursue

  1534. holiness

  1535. and pursue

  1536. likeness

  1537. with Jesus

  1538. Christ

  1539. and finally

  1540. that provides

  1541. quite a great

  1542. degree of

  1543. assurance

  1544. for us

  1545. doesn't it

  1546. we are

  1547. protected

  1548. by that

  1549. same power

  1550. of God

  1551. that breathed

  1552. the world

  1553. into existence

  1554. that's the

  1555. point of

  1556. Colossians 1

  1557. in fact

  1558. that our

  1559. reconciliation

  1560. with Christ

  1561. is rooted

  1562. on his

  1563. mediatorial

  1564. reconciliation

  1565. of all

  1566. things

  1567. in him

  1568. as the

  1569. image

  1570. of the

  1571. invisible

  1572. God

  1573. and that

  1574. provides us

  1575. finally

  1576. comfort

  1577. in trouble

  1578. to know

  1579. that no

  1580. matter what

  1581. we go

  1582. through

  1583. we just

  1584. have to

  1585. set our

  1586. eyes

  1587. on

  1588. Jesus

  1589. to look

  1590. at

  1591. look into

  1592. the heavens

  1593. and to

  1594. see where

  1595. Christ

  1596. Jesus is

  1597. seated at

  1598. the right

  1599. hand

  1600. of the

  1601. Father

  1602. now

  1603. on the

  1604. more

  1605. outward

  1606. level

  1607. not just

  1608. personal

  1609. spirituality

  1610. I think

  1611. this also

  1612. has great

  1613. evangelistic

  1614. appeal

  1615. because

  1616. we now

  1617. have a

  1618. platform

  1619. we talked

  1620. about this

  1621. a little

  1622. bit last

  1623. week

  1624. a platform

  1625. for talking

  1626. about the

  1627. renewal

  1628. of image

  1629. in Christ

  1630. alone

  1631. we have

  1632. this

  1633. ability

  1634. profound

  1635. ability

  1636. to be

  1637. able to

  1638. speak

  1639. into

  1640. the

  1641. various

  1642. issues

  1643. that people

  1644. have

  1645. in their

  1646. lives

  1647. and to

  1648. be able

  1649. to say

  1650. well

  1651. look

  1652. we're

  1653. all

  1654. dead in

  1655. our

  1656. trespasses

  1657. and sins

  1658. the Bible

  1659. tells us

  1660. this

  1661. the Bible

  1662. tells us

  1663. that we've

  1664. fallen after

  1665. Adam

  1666. and that

  1667. the image

  1668. that we

  1669. have

  1670. the communion

  1671. we have

  1672. with God

  1673. has been

  1674. lost

  1675. but that's

  1676. renewed

  1677. in Jesus

  1678. Christ

  1679. that he

  1680. gives us

  1681. this remarkable

  1682. pattern

  1683. and that by

  1684. faith in him

  1685. we're renewed

  1686. to this

  1687. understanding

  1688. of who he

  1689. is

  1690. and we

  1691. get to

  1692. partake

  1693. in what

  1694. was lost

  1695. this speaks

  1696. directly

  1697. in fact

  1698. on a

  1699. more

  1700. social

  1701. level

  1702. to the

  1703. futility

  1704. of social

  1705. endeavors

  1706. for the

  1707. sake of

  1708. social

  1709. endeavors

  1710. doesn't

  1711. it

  1712. you hear

  1713. this a

  1714. lot

  1715. but

  1716. whenever I

  1717. hear some

  1718. of these

  1719. problems

  1720. and not

  1721. that these

  1722. aren't

  1723. important

  1724. problems

  1725. that's

  1726. actually

  1727. the

  1728. point

  1729. these are

  1730. important

  1731. problems

  1732. and the

  1733. problem

  1734. is human

  1735. simpleness

  1736. isn't it

  1737. and that

  1738. means that

  1739. only Christ

  1740. can transform

  1741. us

  1742. in 1

  1743. John 2

  1744. 15

  1745. it says

  1746. do not

  1747. love the

  1748. world

  1749. nor the

  1750. things

  1751. in the

  1752. world

  1753. those

  1754. things

  1755. are

  1756. passing

  1757. away

  1758. but if

  1759. we look

  1760. to Christ

  1761. he is

  1762. the only

  1763. the sole

  1764. platform

  1765. in which

  1766. that can

  1767. be renewed

  1768. and in which

  1769. we can

  1770. look ahead

  1771. to a

  1772. heaven and

  1773. earth

  1774. in which

  1775. the image

  1776. of Christ

  1777. fills

  1778. the new

  1779. heaven

  1780. and earth

  1781. and we

  1782. are able

  1783. to commune

  1784. with God

  1785. and our

  1786. renewed

  1787. bodies

  1788. and souls

  1789. forever

  1790. and ever

  1791. so let

  1792. me pray

  1793. and we

  1794. can have

  1795. some

  1796. questions

  1797. and answers

  1798. father as

  1799. we are

  1800. here on

  1801. earth

  1802. we know

  1803. that

  1804. our minds

  1805. can't fully

  1806. grasp the

  1807. glorious reality

  1808. of what this

  1809. means for us

  1810. that we

  1811. are

  1812. encumbered

  1813. not just

  1814. by that

  1815. first boundary

  1816. of our

  1817. finitude

  1818. as created

  1819. beings

  1820. but

  1821. that we

  1822. are sinful

  1823. even in

  1824. our state

  1825. in you

  1826. we still

  1827. have the

  1828. remnants

  1829. of sin

  1830. we just

  1831. pray that

  1832. you would

  1833. lift that

  1834. from our

  1835. hearts

  1836. so that

  1837. we could

  1838. pursue you

  1839. in humility

  1840. of lives

  1841. transforming

  1842. ourselves

  1843. by your

  1844. spirit

  1845. into your

  1846. image

  1847. may we

  1848. be shining

  1849. lights

  1850. images

  1851. of your

  1852. glory

  1853. representatives

  1854. in fact

  1855. of the

  1856. great

  1857. representative

  1858. who is

  1859. the head

  1860. of the

  1861. redeemed

  1862. race

  1863. christ

  1864. jesus

  1865. we pray

  1866. this

  1867. in

  1868. his name

  1869. amen

  1870. so questions

  1871. and answers

  1872. we've got

  1873. about

  1874. seven minutes

  1875. yeah

  1876. of the

  1877. image

  1878. the face

  1879. the perfect

  1880. image

  1881. in christ

  1882. the perfect

  1883. image of

  1884. god

  1885. in christ

  1886. does that

  1887. have to do

  1888. with his

  1889. human nature

  1890. no

  1891. no

  1892. no

  1893. that would

  1894. have to do

  1895. directly with

  1896. his essence

  1897. yeah

  1898. with who

  1899. he is

  1900. in himself

  1901. that

  1902. that

  1903. doesn't

  1904. have to

  1905. do

  1906. with his

  1907. incarnation

  1908. that has

  1909. to do

  1910. with his

  1911. existence

  1912. in the

  1913. trinity

  1914. so that's

  1915. an eternal

  1916. reality

  1917. so the

  1918. image to

  1919. which we're

  1920. renewed

  1921. in christ

  1922. it may

  1923. be related

  1924. is related

  1925. image in

  1926. adam

  1927. but is

  1928. right

  1929. that's

  1930. the step

  1931. of him

  1932. in his

  1933. messianic

  1934. mission

  1935. as mediator

  1936. is needed

  1937. in that

  1938. right

  1939. so that

  1940. him as

  1941. the perfect

  1942. image

  1943. makes him

  1944. the perfect

  1945. mediator

  1946. makes him

  1947. the perfect

  1948. as it were

  1949. trinitarian

  1950. candidate

  1951. to condescend

  1952. himself to

  1953. renew

  1954. the image

  1955. in adam

  1956. so there's

  1957. some steps

  1958. that we had

  1959. to take

  1960. to get

  1961. there

  1962. but

  1963. did that

  1964. help

  1965. so the

  1966. renewed

  1967. image

  1968. that we

  1969. have

  1970. through

  1971. christ

  1972. is it

  1973. basically

  1974. the same

  1975. as the

  1976. original

  1977. image

  1978. that adam

  1979. wore

  1980. yeah

  1981. i think

  1982. that's

  1983. fair

  1984. i think

  1985. that's

  1986. fair

  1987. there's

  1988. an added

  1989. element

  1990. of the

  1991. permanence

  1992. that comes

  1993. from

  1994. god's

  1995. grace

  1996. though

  1997. that i'm

  1998. trying to

  1999. yeah there's a permanence

  2000. through the holy spirit

  2001. that you have

  2002. not necessarily

  2003. just

  2004. you know

  2005. we're not having

  2006. something added

  2007. to our natures

  2008. we're not changing

  2009. necessarily

  2010. we're not becoming

  2011. superhuman

  2012. i guess is what

  2013. i'm trying to say

  2014. our humanity

  2015. is good

  2016. so

  2017. you might hear

  2018. some people

  2019. try and talk

  2020. about

  2021. maybe we'll

  2022. become more

  2023. and more

  2024. and more

  2025. and more

  2026. human

  2027. or more

  2028. extra human

  2029. in heaven

  2030. or we'll

  2031. become

  2032. some people

  2033. will try

  2034. and use

  2035. that verse

  2036. from matthew

  2037. 22 to say

  2038. we'll be

  2039. like angels

  2040. i think

  2041. they're making

  2042. a leap

  2043. in logic

  2044. when they

  2045. read that

  2046. we're gonna

  2047. be like

  2048. the angels

  2049. and that

  2050. we'll

  2051. neither be

  2052. married

  2053. nor given

  2054. a marriage

  2055. that's

  2056. that's one

  2057. qualification

  2058. there

  2059. but i don't

  2060. think that's

  2061. going to say

  2062. that we're

  2063. going to

  2064. literally

  2065. become angels

  2066. in heavens

  2067. where we

  2068. don't have

  2069. bodies

  2070. we're going

  2071. to be

  2072. renewed

  2073. human beings

  2074. and there's

  2075. going to be

  2076. a permanence

  2077. in our

  2078. ability to

  2079. commune with

  2080. god

  2081. through our

  2082. human bodies

  2083. that explain

  2084. it

  2085. was that

  2086. helpful

  2087. okay

  2088. just one

  2089. quick follow

  2090. yeah

  2091. so the

  2092. image in

  2093. christ

  2094. you said

  2095. that

  2096. is eternal

  2097. yeah

  2098. but

  2099. so is

  2100. that

  2101. distinct

  2102. from the

  2103. image

  2104. adam

  2105. bore

  2106. and that

  2107. he will

  2108. bear

  2109. well i

  2110. think it's

  2111. it's helpful

  2112. to see us

  2113. as obviously

  2114. christ is

  2115. fully god

  2116. and the

  2117. image of

  2118. god in

  2119. adam reflects

  2120. that

  2121. so that's

  2122. part of the

  2123. renewal

  2124. that's going

  2125. on there

  2126. is we're

  2127. brought to

  2128. reflect that

  2129. and we're

  2130. brought to

  2131. be renewed

  2132. into that

  2133. image

  2134. yes

  2135. great

  2136. i've always

  2137. been struck

  2138. by the

  2139. image of

  2140. god

  2141. so jesus

  2142. christ

  2143. being described

  2144. as meek

  2145. and humble

  2146. which god

  2147. himself

  2148. is

  2149. and he's

  2150. meek

  2151. but it's

  2152. not described

  2153. that way

  2154. like people

  2155. are beings

  2156. they realize

  2157. how low

  2158. they are

  2159. in comparison

  2160. to the

  2161. father

  2162. so is

  2163. that just

  2164. when jesus

  2165. christ came

  2166. down god

  2167. was always

  2168. humble

  2169. with me

  2170. is that

  2171. just like

  2172. a

  2173. amplification

  2174. like

  2175. manifestation

  2176. of his

  2177. humility

  2178. by coming

  2179. down as

  2180. a

  2181. bond

  2182. servant

  2183. is he

  2184. like just

  2185. in the

  2186. flesh

  2187. jesus christ

  2188. is he

  2189. just kind

  2190. of putting

  2191. that on

  2192. display

  2193. as before

  2194. where

  2195. god was

  2196. he was

  2197. in the

  2198. form of

  2199. a bond

  2200. servant

  2201. yeah

  2202. i think

  2203. i think

  2204. that's a

  2205. good way

  2206. to look

  2207. at it

  2208. that creation

  2209. the creation

  2210. itself even

  2211. was created

  2212. as an act

  2213. of god's

  2214. grace

  2215. he could

  2216. have been

  2217. perfect

  2218. god didn't

  2219. need us

  2220. you know

  2221. he could

  2222. have been

  2223. perfectly

  2224. content in

  2225. us

  2226. and he

  2227. in fact

  2228. he didn't

  2229. even need

  2230. to save

  2231. us

  2232. but that

  2233. in him

  2234. condescending

  2235. taking on

  2236. the form

  2237. of a bond

  2238. servant

  2239. this is the

  2240. ultimate

  2241. act of

  2242. grace

  2243. and john

  2244. 114

  2245. says that

  2246. he's

  2247. you know

  2248. jesus christ

  2249. is full

  2250. of grace

  2251. and truth

  2252. this idea

  2253. that he

  2254. could have

  2255. been perfectly

  2256. content in

  2257. heaven

  2258. but that

  2259. part of

  2260. his character

  2261. led him

  2262. to want to

  2263. dispose himself

  2264. to come

  2265. down

  2266. and the

  2267. infinite quality

  2268. of his love

  2269. demonstrated that

  2270. grace

  2271. so i think

  2272. that's helpful

  2273. the next

  2274. question that

  2275. some theologians

  2276. like to

  2277. tinker with

  2278. is does

  2279. that mean

  2280. that god

  2281. in his

  2282. character

  2283. did make

  2284. that does

  2285. make creation

  2286. necessary

  2287. so that's

  2288. that's this

  2289. whole other

  2290. dynamic aspect

  2291. i don't think

  2292. we have to

  2293. get into

  2294. that the

  2295. bottom line

  2296. is that

  2297. part of

  2298. his character

  2299. is that

  2300. he's so

  2301. infinitely

  2302. gracious

  2303. that he

  2304. could do

  2305. something he

  2306. didn't have

  2307. to do

  2308. so could

  2309. god properly

  2310. describe as

  2311. meek

  2312. before

  2313. jesus

  2314. i mean

  2315. before jesus

  2316. came down

  2317. and became

  2318. like you know

  2319. so dependent

  2320. on i guess

  2321. he must have

  2322. been

  2323. yeah

  2324. yeah

  2325. it's a

  2326. special

  2327. quality that

  2328. christ shows

  2329. by his

  2330. dependence on

  2331. the father

  2332. in weakness

  2333. yeah i guess

  2334. that has to do

  2335. with so

  2336. there's there's

  2337. an interesting

  2338. exercise in

  2339. theology of

  2340. when you're

  2341. defining the

  2342. attributes of

  2343. god or

  2344. virtues or

  2345. whatever it

  2346. is you define

  2347. it first in

  2348. relation to

  2349. god and

  2350. then second

  2351. in relation

  2352. to us

  2353. and that can

  2354. be fun with

  2355. something like

  2356. humility i think

  2357. that's kind of

  2358. like what your

  2359. meekness right

  2360. it's kind of

  2361. what you're

  2362. asking and

  2363. if you go

  2364. with you know

  2365. edwards has

  2366. this definition

  2367. of humility

  2368. which is

  2369. recognizing and

  2370. being content

  2371. with your

  2372. proper station

  2373. or something

  2374. like that

  2375. and so if

  2376. that's true

  2377. then god is

  2378. infinitely

  2379. perfect perfectly

  2380. meek he's

  2381. perfectly

  2382. content

  2383. his station

  2384. because his

  2385. station is

  2386. perfect and

  2387. that never

  2388. changes so

  2389. yeah yes

  2390. i think in

  2391. that idea

  2392. our first

  2393. to first relate

  2394. that idea of

  2395. meekness to

  2396. heaven we

  2397. first are

  2398. introduced to

  2399. god in

  2400. creation and

  2401. i think that

  2402. the delicate

  2403. quality of

  2404. so much in

  2405. creation would

  2406. infer an idea

  2407. of this

  2408. this nuance and

  2409. i think it's

  2410. like gracious

  2411. distance and

  2412. for there and

  2413. i think all of

  2414. this is

  2415. kind of

  2416. about

  2417. meekness

  2418. hmm

  2419. yeah

  2420. that's good

  2421. thank you

  2422. well it's

  2423. 950

  2424. so i suggest

  2425. we

  2426. ascend

  2427. to the

  2428. sanctuary

  2429. as it were

  2430. thank you

  2431. everyone

  2432. so Agent

  2433. thank you
