  1. Good morning.

  2. Happy Mother's Day.

  3. We're going to continue in our series in the book of Ezra.

  4. If you want to pull out your pew Bibles, it's page 363.

  5. And we're going to be looking this morning at chapter 3.

  6. And we're going to start by reading the text this morning.

  7. So if you want to turn with me, we're going to look at the next chapter in this story of God restoring and rebuilding his people.

  8. Ezra chapter 3, starting in verse 1.

    Ezra 3 chapter mention

  9. When the seventh month came and the children of Israel were in the towns, the people gathered as one man to Jerusalem.

  10. Then arose Joshua, son of Josedach, and his fellow priests, and Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, with his kinsmen.

  11. And they built the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the law of Moses, the man of God.

  12. They set the altar in its place, for fear was on them because of the peoples of the lands.

  13. And they offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, burnt offerings morning and evening.

  14. And they kept the feast of booths, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number according to the rule, as each day required.

  15. And after that, the regular burnt offerings, the offerings at the new moon and all the appointed feasts of the Lord,

  16. and the offerings of everyone who made a freewill offering to the Lord.

  17. From the first day of the seventh month, they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord.

  18. But the foundation of the temple of the Lord was not yet laid.

  19. So they gave money to the masons and the carpenters, and food and drink and oil to the Sidonians and the Tyrians,

  20. to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea, to Joppa, according to the grant that they had from Cyrus, king of Persia.

  21. Now, in the second year, after the coming to the house of God at Jerusalem,

  22. in the second month, Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua, the son of Josedach,

  23. made a beginning together with the rest of their kinsmen, the priests and the Levites,

  24. and all who had come to Jerusalem from the captivity.

  25. They appointed the Levites from twenty years old and upwards to supervise the work of the house of the Lord.

  26. And Jeshua, with his sons and his brothers, and Cadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah,

  27. together supervised the workmen in the house of the Lord, along with the sons of Hennadad and the Levites,

  28. their sons and brothers.

  29. And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord,

  30. the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets,

  31. and the Levites sung the sons of Asaph with cymbals

  32. to praise the Lord according to the directions of David, king of Israel.

  33. And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the Lord.

  34. For he is good, and his steadfast love endures forever towards Israel.

  35. And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord,

  36. because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.

  37. But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' houses,

  38. old men who had seen the first house,

  39. wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid,

  40. though many shouted aloud for joy,

  41. so that the people could not distinguish the sound of joyful shout

  42. from the sound of the people's weeping.

  43. For the people shouted with a great shout,

  44. and the sound was heard far away.

  45. Will you pray with me?

  46. Amen.

  47. Lord, as we look at this text,

  48. this account from long ago,

  49. of your work in this world,

  50. of the story of your people,

  51. Lord, I pray that you would help us

  52. to see and understand,

  53. Lord, the truths in this story.

  54. Lord, help it to come alive to us

  55. so that we might be encouraged,

  56. so that we might be challenged.

  57. Lord, so that we might see you more clearly,

  58. so that we might hear your call

  59. distinctly,

  60. that we might respond to you as we ought.

  61. Lord, I pray for your help this morning,

  62. Lord, that you would give me words to speak,

  63. clarity

  64. in my speaking,

  65. and Lord, that by your Holy Spirit,

  66. we might together

  67. sit under your word,

  68. and Lord, watch you,

  69. reveal yourself to us in it.

  70. Lord, help us to be

  71. not only hearers of your word,

  72. but doers also.

  73. For Jesus' sake, we pray.

  74. Amen.

  75. Amen.

  76. So I was thinking about this time of year,

  77. 32 years ago now,

  78. which is kind of frightening.

  79. I was graduating from high school

  80. and moving on,

  81. and I was going off to college

  82. and looking forward to that,

  83. but I realized that it was a momentous occasion.

  84. Even then, I think I had an inkling of it,

  85. and as I look back,

  86. much more so now,

  87. I realized that going off to college

  88. is often the first time in our lives

  89. when we are actually able to choose

  90. who we are,

  91. what we value,

  92. and what's important to us.

  93. Until that point,

  94. we live in our family's houses usually,

  95. and we live under the protection

  96. and the provision

  97. and within the value system of our parents,

  98. and when we go off to college,

  99. it's the first time

  100. that we get to begin to choose

  101. what does that look like?

  102. It makes us answer the questions.

  103. What will I invest in?

  104. And what will be most important to me?

  105. And of course,

  106. this is the first step

  107. for those of us

  108. who have gotten beyond that stage.

  109. We recognize this is the first step

  110. of doing this for the rest of our lives

  111. because then we move on to the next thing,

  112. the new city that we move to,

  113. the new relationship that we move into

  114. if we get married

  115. or the new community of friends

  116. we move into

  117. as we begin our workplace.

  118. And it continues throughout life

  119. as your children grow up

  120. and leave the empty nest

  121. or as you find yourself

  122. in your 50s and 60s single.

  123. You find yourself in new seasons

  124. and you're always choosing.

  125. You're always deciding

  126. what's most important to me.

  127. What will my life be about?

  128. Even retirement

  129. creates another opportunity

  130. to decide what we want to do

  131. with our lives.

  132. And I think that this connects

  133. with the story

  134. that we read

  135. from Ezra this morning.

  136. You see,

  137. remember the history

  138. of where we're at

  139. in the big picture.

  140. Going all the way back,

  141. God through Abraham

  142. in Genesis 12 said,

  143. I'm going to make you great people.

  144. And then through Moses

  145. he delivered a great people

  146. out of slavery to Egypt

  147. and brought them

  148. into the promised land

  149. and then through David

  150. raised up a kingdom

  151. and this great land.

  152. But the people

  153. consistently

  154. found themselves unable.

  155. They chose not to believe God

  156. and to trust God

  157. and to follow God

  158. and to submit to God.

  159. And so in this kingdom

  160. it became increasingly

  161. ungodly

  162. as the people rejected God

  163. over and over again.

  164. And so God

  165. in 586 BC

  166. brought the Babylonians

  167. to conquer Jerusalem,

  168. to raise the city,

  169. to sow salt in the fields

  170. and to export the people

  171. away from the city.

  172. And for 50, 70 years,

  173. what is it?

  174. 70 years total,

  175. the people were in exile.

  176. They were scattered

  177. around the land.

  178. And the book of Ezra

  179. tells the story

  180. of how God

  181. has then taken people

  182. who have been shattered

  183. and scattered

  184. and is now beginning

  185. to bring them back

  186. to restore them

  187. and to rebuild them

  188. as God's people.

  189. And what we saw

  190. in chapters 1 and 2

  191. is how God moved

  192. the king of Persia

  193. who had now become

  194. the ruler of the land

  195. taking over

  196. the Babylonian captivity,

  197. how God had moved

  198. his heart

  199. to change the regulations

  200. and to actually

  201. give an edict

  202. to declare that

  203. the restoration

  204. of the worship

  205. of the God

  206. of the Jews

  207. in Jerusalem

  208. was a good

  209. and right thing

  210. that they had

  211. the support

  212. of the Persian emperor

  213. and the Persian empire.

  214. And so what we see then

  215. in Ezra 3,

  216. beginning in verse 1,

  217. is that the people,

  218. a first contingent,

  219. had returned

  220. to Jerusalem

  221. and they had gone

  222. to their towns

  223. and they had begun

  224. to settle in

  225. and they gathered.

  226. But in this situation,

  227. recognize a few things.

  228. One is their needs

  229. were great.

  230. Their moving back

  231. to this land

  232. was like moving

  233. into the Wild West

  234. in the 1800s.

  235. They were restarting

  236. from scratch

  237. and they had only

  238. what they brought

  239. with them.

  240. And though they had

  241. the political backing

  242. of the emperor of Persia,

  243. they didn't have

  244. the welcome

  245. of the people

  246. in the surrounding lands.

  247. We'll see that next week.

  248. There's actually

  249. some resistance

  250. and opposition

  251. to them being there

  252. and doing

  253. what they were doing.

  254. They had been uprooted

  255. from their homeland

  256. and had lived far away

  257. for a long time.

  258. Had they become

  259. more Babylonian

  260. than Jewish?

  261. Had they become

  262. more Persian

  263. than Jewish?

  264. Jewish.

  265. They'd also lived

  266. for 70 years

  267. without

  268. the structures

  269. of their relationship

  270. with God.

  271. There was no city,

  272. no holy city

  273. to gather to

  274. for the feasts,

  275. the three festivals

  276. every year.

  277. There was no temple

  278. to go to.

  279. There was no altar

  280. to sacrifice on.

  281. There was none

  282. of the means

  283. by which God

  284. had given

  285. his people

  286. to relate to him

  287. were available

  288. to them

  289. for 70 years.

  290. And even as they

  291. came back

  292. and as Greg

  293. preached last week

  294. on one and two,

  295. how much of this

  296. there were echoes

  297. of returning

  298. of the second exodus,

  299. that this is a second

  300. deliverance of God

  301. and bringing his people

  302. back to himself

  303. and back to the

  304. promised land.

  305. recognize also though

  306. that the people

  307. were much smaller

  308. and much less wealthy.

  309. When Joshua

  310. led the people in,

  311. they were a large army

  312. and they were outnumbered

  313. at times,

  314. but they were

  315. a significant people.

  316. They are now small

  317. and they are not able

  318. to defend themselves.

  319. Smaller in number

  320. and smaller in worth.

  321. And therefore,

  322. as it says in verse 3,

  323. they feared the people.

  324. Is it verse 3?

  325. Did I get that right?

  326. Yes, verse 3.

  327. They feared the people

  328. around them

  329. as they were entering in.

  330. I want you to put yourself

  331. in that position

  332. for a second.

  333. What would you do

  334. if you were entering

  335. into a land

  336. that you felt in danger

  337. and you felt hostile?

  338. Right?

  339. You've got a couple

  340. of things you need to build.

  341. You've got to build

  342. your home.

  343. You've got to build

  344. some walls

  345. to protect yourself.

  346. You've got to build

  347. a temple.

  348. You've got to build

  349. an altar.

  350. Right?

  351. Those are some things

  352. for you to do.

  353. Now, if it were me,

  354. I would start with the walls

  355. because that's what

  356. I would want.

  357. I would want protection first.

  358. Once you get the walls up,

  359. then you can start

  360. building the buildings.

  361. And once you get

  362. the buildings up,

  363. you build the temple

  364. and then you put

  365. the altar in place

  366. because then it's got

  367. protection

  368. and then we can start doing.

  369. So in my human mind,

  370. that would be the order

  371. that we would go in

  372. if I were part

  373. of this returning group.

  374. And yet,

  375. in the face

  376. of their fear,

  377. the people chose

  378. to do something else.

  379. Stephen Covey,

  380. the guru

  381. of time management

  382. in the 1980s,

  383. he's probably passé now

  384. and people don't think

  385. much of him,

  386. but back in the 1980s,

  387. he was the big deal.

  388. Seven Habits

  389. of Highly Effective People.

  390. One of his principles

  391. is put the big rocks

  392. in your schedule.

  393. Our time is important

  394. and what we value

  395. is shown

  396. by how we spend our time

  397. and what we invest in.

  398. And it's at times

  399. when we're most afraid

  400. often that we see

  401. the things

  402. that are most important

  403. to us

  404. and where we invest

  405. our time.

  406. And the people

  407. of Israel

  408. under the leadership

  409. of Zerubbabel

  410. and Yeshua

  411. started

  412. in an unlikely place.

  413. And in that,

  414. I think we see

  415. some things

  416. for ourselves

  417. to learn

  418. about what is

  419. most important

  420. for God's people.

  421. So that's where

  422. we want to go today

  423. is look at

  424. what's most important

  425. for God's people.

  426. We're going to look

  427. at two different things,

  428. two different sections

  429. of the passage,

  430. one through seven.

  431. We're going to see

  432. that they set themselves

  433. apart for worship.

  434. and then we're going

  435. to look at

  436. eight through 13

  437. and look at

  438. how they set their hearts

  439. on God's glory.

  440. And then we're going

  441. to think about

  442. what this means

  443. for us today.

  444. So that's where

  445. we're going.

  446. Look with me again

  447. at verses

  448. one through seven

  449. and think about

  450. what is it

  451. as they

  452. in this fear

  453. began to do things,

  454. what did they do first?

  455. And you see it

  456. in verse

  457. two,

  458. right?

  459. As they gathered

  460. and the seventh month

  461. by the way,

  462. they gathered

  463. at the timing

  464. because the seventh month

  465. was kind of like

  466. it would have been

  467. like Easter

  468. or a Christmas,

  469. a high point

  470. in the church calendar

  471. so to speak

  472. for the Jewish people

  473. in the Old Testament.

  474. It was the month

  475. in which the Day of Atonement

  476. fell.

  477. It was the month

  478. during which

  479. the Feast of Booths

  480. fell.

  481. And it was one

  482. of the three times

  483. of the year

  484. where the people

  485. were meant to gather

  486. in Jerusalem

  487. to offer sacrifices

  488. and worship God.

  489. And as they returned

  490. the land,

  491. it seems they were there

  492. for a little while

  493. and then this month

  494. came and they gathered

  495. in Jerusalem

  496. and as they gathered,

  497. they built an altar.

  498. They didn't build walls.

  499. They didn't build

  500. the temple.

  501. But they started

  502. by building the altar

  503. so that they could

  504. offer up sacrifices

  505. to God

  506. as he had instructed them

  507. in Leviticus

  508. and Numbers

  509. so long ago.

  510. And as they had done

  511. for many years

  512. in the tabernacle

  513. and then in the temple

  514. that Solomon built

  515. in Jerusalem,

  516. they started with this

  517. because in their fear

  518. they knew that

  519. the most important thing

  520. was being right

  521. with God.

  522. the most important thing

  523. was to honor God

  524. because he would be

  525. their refuge

  526. and he would be

  527. their protector.

  528. There's lots of resonance

  529. in the timing of this.

  530. When you think about

  531. the Day of Atonement,

  532. if you remember

  533. the Day of Atonement

  534. was a time

  535. when the high priest

  536. would come

  537. and bring two goats,

  538. right,

  539. and he would sacrifice one

  540. and his blood

  541. would be shed

  542. and the other one

  543. he would lay his hand on

  544. and representing

  545. the sins of the people

  546. and then the goat

  547. would be sent out

  548. into the wilderness

  549. far away.

  550. And in both of these

  551. pictures,

  552. you see God saying,

  553. you may not approach me,

  554. a holy God,

  555. on your own,

  556. but

  557. I am going to graciously

  558. make a way for you

  559. to approach me.

  560. And through this

  561. sacrificial system,

  562. these were pointers

  563. and signs

  564. of how it would be

  565. that we might approach

  566. a holy God.

  567. The Feast of Booths

  568. and in-gathering

  569. that says that they

  570. celebrated

  571. was a time of both

  572. celebrating the harvest

  573. and God's provision

  574. and think about

  575. how sweet that would be.

  576. After 70 years in exile,

  577. they've come back

  578. and they're actually

  579. celebrating the harvest.

  580. Now,

  581. it's not clear

  582. how much harvest

  583. they had that year

  584. because they hadn't been there

  585. for a full year

  586. of agriculture yet.

  587. And yet,

  588. God asked them,

  589. celebrate my provision.

  590. And my faithfulness

  591. to you.

  592. And remember, too,

  593. that the Feast of Booths

  594. was enacted

  595. so that they would remember

  596. how God carried them

  597. through the wilderness

  598. after the exodus,

  599. how they lived in tents

  600. and these booths,

  601. these makeshift houses,

  602. so that they would remember

  603. that their security

  604. is not in those things,

  605. but in the Lord.

  606. And then,

  607. interestingly enough,

  608. as the author

  609. writes about this,

  610. he doesn't camp out

  611. a lot on the Day of Atonement,

  612. which is what I really

  613. wanted to preach

  614. to you guys about

  615. this morning,

  616. but it's not in the text,

  617. so we didn't talk about it.

  618. You can go back

  619. and read it

  620. in the Old Testament.

  621. It's a great thing.

  622. But he says

  623. over and over again,

  624. what they offered

  625. was the burnt offerings.

  626. The burnt offerings

  627. were given

  628. over and over

  629. and over again.

  630. Why?

  631. Because the burnt offerings

  632. were offerings

  633. of consecration.

  634. That is,

  635. they were offerings

  636. to say to the Lord,

  637. Lord,

  638. I am wholly yours.

  639. They were,

  640. the people brought that,

  641. those offerings,

  642. those burnt offerings

  643. on a daily basis

  644. to remind themselves

  645. and to say to God,

  646. God,

  647. you are our God

  648. and we are your people

  649. and we will not worship

  650. anyone else.

  651. And as they did this,

  652. you see the repetition of

  653. and they did this

  654. as it was written.

  655. They were doing this

  656. under God's instruction.

  657. They did not come

  658. and say,

  659. God,

  660. hey,

  661. it's a new day.

  662. You know,

  663. we've been away

  664. for 70 years.

  665. Why don't we kind of

  666. spice things up

  667. and do some things differently?

  668. I've liked,

  669. I'd like to think about

  670. some worship

  671. doing it this way.

  672. He says,

  673. no.

  674. Instead,

  675. what you see

  676. is them saying,

  677. God,

  678. we're going to return

  679. to your word

  680. and to submitting

  681. to your instructions

  682. that we cannot worship you

  683. as we want to,

  684. but we are called

  685. to worship you

  686. as you have called us to.

  687. And this is what you see

  688. as they're returning.

  689. Their priority

  690. was not safety,

  691. but being right

  692. with God

  693. and establishing

  694. the worship of God

  695. as he had instructed.

  696. So that's really

  697. what you see

  698. in verses

  699. one through seven

  700. is the establishment

  701. as the people

  702. come together

  703. in this month,

  704. what they say

  705. is the most important

  706. thing is that

  707. we're going to worship

  708. God the way

  709. he told us to.

  710. But then you see

  711. that there's more

  712. that the writer

  713. brings out today

  714. because he says,

  715. okay,

  716. so they built the altar,

  717. but then the foundations

  718. were not laid.

  719. And it says,

  720. so they sent out

  721. some work orders,

  722. they did a little

  723. comparison shopping

  724. with contractors,

  725. they found some guys

  726. up in Tyre and Sidon

  727. who had really good

  728. building materials

  729. in Cyprus,

  730. and so they planned

  731. and then returned again

  732. the beginning

  733. of the next year,

  734. the second month,

  735. and they came back

  736. and they laid

  737. the foundation

  738. of the temple.

  739. And in this

  740. amazing story,

  741. there's a lot

  742. about the organization

  743. of setting up

  744. the Levites

  745. and priests,

  746. but I think

  747. that the high point

  748. of it is in verses

  749. 11 and 12

  750. because as they

  751. build this temple,

  752. and they haven't even

  753. built the building yet,

  754. Nick's going to preach

  755. on that in like

  756. three, two weeks,

  757. no, Greg's going to

  758. preach on it in two weeks,

  759. they haven't even

  760. built the whole temple,

  761. they just laid the foundation,

  762. but as they laid

  763. the foundation,

  764. they gathered

  765. in song and praise,

  766. and part of what

  767. would strike a Jewish

  768. writer as they were

  769. listening to this

  770. is that this is

  771. the same story,

  772. in fact,

  773. these are the exact

  774. same words,

  775. for he is good

  776. and his steadfast love

  777. endures forever,

  778. that were said

  779. two other times

  780. in the story

  781. of the Old Testament.

  782. The first one

  783. was when King David

  784. had recaptured

  785. the Ark of the Covenant,

  786. remember the Ark

  787. of the Covenant

  788. which was this box

  789. that they carried around

  790. that had all these signs

  791. of God's faithfulness,

  792. the Ten Commandments,

  793. the rod and staff,

  794. manna,

  795. they carried around

  796. things that were

  797. reminding them

  798. of how God

  799. has been faithful

  800. to them

  801. and how he was,

  802. had set a covenant

  803. relationship

  804. whereby they might

  805. be his people

  806. and he would be

  807. their God.

  808. And as this Ark

  809. of the Covenant

  810. is regained

  811. from the Philistines

  812. and brought

  813. into Jerusalem,

  814. in 1 Chronicles 16,

  815. 34,

  816. they gather

  817. the singers

  818. and in almost

  819. the same vocabulary,

  820. the cymbals

  821. and the trumpets,

  822. the Levites

  823. and the priests,

  824. they celebrate

  825. the goodness

  826. of God

  827. and they offer

  828. burnt offerings

  829. to the Lord.

  830. and then the second

  831. place that you see

  832. this is in 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 5:13

  833. chapter 5,

  834. verse 13

  835. and this is when

  836. Solomon has actually

  837. built a temple

  838. in which they're

  839. going to worship God

  840. and all the instructions

  841. that God

  842. had given them

  843. in all of its fullness.

  844. 2 Chronicles 5,

  845. 13 says this,

  846. when the song

  847. was raised

  848. and the trumpets

  849. and cymbals

  850. and other musical instruments

  851. and praise to the Lord

  852. for he is good

  853. for his steadfast love

  854. endures forever.

  855. The house,

  856. the house of the Lord

  857. was filled with a cloud

  858. so that the priests

  859. could not stand

  860. to minister

  861. because of the cloud

  862. for the glory

  863. of the Lord

  864. filled the house

  865. of God.

  866. You see, friends,

  867. in the Old Testament

  868. for the people of God,

  869. the temple was the place

  870. where the glory of God,

  871. the presence of God,

  872. the very radiance

  873. and manifestation

  874. of all of his qualities

  875. and his characters

  876. that God created the temple

  877. to be the meeting place

  878. between God and man,

  879. between God and humanity

  880. that as we get,

  881. that this would be the place

  882. where he would choose

  883. to manifest himself

  884. and dwell among his people.

  885. and this glory

  886. was the sweetest thing

  887. for the people of Israel

  888. that God himself

  889. dwelt in their midst.

  890. And yet,

  891. now what we have

  892. is these people

  893. returning from exile

  894. and they'd not had

  895. that presence

  896. and there was no place

  897. of that glory.

  898. And so,

  899. even the laying

  900. of the foundation

  901. caused them

  902. to praise God

  903. in hopes that

  904. God was with them

  905. and that God

  906. would renew

  907. his relationship

  908. with them

  909. and be among them.

  910. And yet,

  911. you see in verse 12

  912. how this is mixed

  913. even from the very start

  914. because the older men,

  915. those who had been around,

  916. those who had seen

  917. this temple

  918. that Solomon had built

  919. with its great glory,

  920. they knew that

  921. the former house

  922. would have greater glory

  923. than the one

  924. that they were building.

  925. It's kind of like

  926. going from a Lincoln

  927. to a Yugo.

  928. Yugos aren't around anymore.

  929. A Lincoln to a Cooper,

  930. Mini Cooper.

  931. You guys like Mini Coopers.

  932. What's a good example?

  933. It's like,

  934. it's like going

  935. from a Lincoln Navigator

  936. to a Ford Fiesta.

  937. Are we getting there?

  938. Right?

  939. It still works.

  940. It still does

  941. what it's supposed to do.

  942. But it's smaller

  943. and far less glorious.

  944. And the people grieved

  945. because they knew

  946. that the loss

  947. of that glory

  948. was because

  949. of their own sin.

  950. It had been

  951. their national disobedience

  952. that had caused it.

  953. and yet they longed

  954. for that past glory.

  955. And the words

  956. that Julie read earlier

  957. from the book of Haggai.

  958. Haggai is one

  959. of the prophets

  960. who is ministering

  961. to the people of God

  962. during this very time.

  963. And in fact,

  964. it seems that these words

  965. came right after

  966. chapter three,

  967. probably,

  968. where they need

  969. encouragement

  970. to keep going

  971. and to not give in

  972. to the despair.

  973. Just to reread again

  974. what was read earlier

  975. from Haggai,

  976. the prophet

  977. as he speaks

  978. to the people.

  979. Work,

  980. that is work

  981. in building this temple

  982. for I am with you

  983. declares the Lord

  984. according to the covenant

  985. that I made with you

  986. when you came out of Egypt.

  987. My spirit remains

  988. in your midst.

  989. Fear not

  990. for thus says

  991. the Lord of hosts,

  992. yea,

  993. once more

  994. in a little while

  995. I will shake

  996. the heavens

  997. and the earth

  998. and the sea

  999. and the dry land

  1000. and I will shake

  1001. all the nations

  1002. so that the treasures

  1003. of all nations

  1004. shall come in

  1005. and I will fill

  1006. this house

  1007. with glory

1008. says the Lord of hosts.

  1009. The silver is mine

1010. and the gold is mine

1011. declares the Lord of hosts.

  1012. The latter glory

  1013. of this house

  1014. shall be greater

  1015. than the former

1016. says the Lord of hosts.

  1017. And so,

  1018. these old men

  1019. thinking back

  1020. to Solomon's temple

  1021. are weeping

  1022. because they see

  1023. the lack of it.

  1024. They see this sense

  1025. of incomplete restoration

1026. of what had been before

  1027. and God comes

  1028. and he says,

  1029. I'm not done

1030. and though this is what,

  1031. this is the temple

  1032. you will have now,

1033. there is a greater glory

1034. that I have for you

  1035. and my presence

  1036. is still with you

  1037. and my spirit

  1038. is still with you

1039. and you do not need

  1040. to be afraid.

  1041. in some ways,

  1042. what we see

1043. in all of this chapter

  1044. is a bit like

  1045. a marriage renewal ceremony.

  1046. A couple who've been married

  1047. for 25 years

  1048. maybe walked through

  1049. really hard things,

  1050. maybe thought,

  1051. is this worth it?

  1052. God is bringing them

  1053. back together

1054. and the people of God

  1055. are coming

1056. to the God of Israel

  1057. and saying,

  1058. we renew our vows

  1059. and God is saying,

1060. I am going to be faithful

  1061. to you.

  1062. I will,

  1063. the people are saying,

  1064. we will not run

  1065. after other gods.

1066. We will forsake all others

1067. till death do us part.

  1068. and God is saying,

  1069. I am inviting you

  1070. into this relationship

  1071. with me

  1072. where you will find

  1073. the glory

  1074. that you long for

  1075. and that your soul

  1076. hungers and thirsts for.

1077. It is a marriage renewal covenant

  1078. where to say,

  1079. to be in relationship

  1080. with you

  1081. is to taste

  1082. of your glory.

1083. So this is what's going on

  1084. in 536 BC.

  1085. God is renewing

  1086. and restoring

  1087. and we'll see.

  1088. God's not done yet.

1089. He's going to build the temple.

1090. He's going to bring the law.

1091. He's going to renew the sacrament.

1092. He's going to rebuild the city.

  1093. God's rebuilding

  1094. is just beginning.

  1095. But in it,

1096. we see that God's people

1097. have made the worship of God

  1098. their priority

1099. and the glory of God

  1100. their longing

  1101. and their heart.

  1102. So,

1103. what do we do with that?

  1104. That's great.

  1105. It's a long time ago

1106. in a very physical picture

1107. of how to do these things.

1108. What do we do with this?

1109. I want to just locate this

  1110. in the biblical story

  1111. a little bit

  1112. and help you see

  1113. some of the threads

1114. because I hope you hear

1115. that what God is doing

  1116. with this particular people

  1117. is an example

  1118. and a foretaste

  1119. of the greater things

  1120. that would come.

  1121. You see,

1122. because God is in the business

1123. of gathering in wandering exiles.

1124. God is in the business

1125. of bringing back to himself

  1126. men and women

  1127. from every tribe

  1128. and tongue

  1129. and nation

  1130. across the land

  1131. who,

  1132. because of their sin,

  1133. are estranged

  1134. and exiled from him

  1135. and are not dwelling

  1136. in relationship with him

  1137. and are not experiencing

  1138. his glory.

1139. We see that what God

1140. is doing in the world

  1141. is he is building

  1142. a new temple,

1143. a temple that is not a place,

  1144. not this building,

  1145. it's not this edifice,

  1146. it's not the thing

1147. we're going to build next door.

  1148. That's not where God's temple dwells.

  1149. But God's temple

  1150. is his people,

  1151. his people built

  1152. on a cornerstone,

  1153. the cornerstone being

  1154. Jesus Christ,

  1155. the Son of God.

  1156. We see these pictures

  1157. in the scriptures.

  1158. Jesus himself,

1159. while he was on earth,

  1160. told the Pharisees,

  1161. destroy this temple

  1162. and in three days

1163. I will raise it up.

1164. He was talking about himself

  1165. and his own body

  1166. that would be destroyed

  1167. by death

  1168. and yet raised

  1169. to new life

  1170. for us

  1171. and for the beginning

  1172. of this new people

  1173. that wouldn't simply be

  1174. about the descendants

  1175. of Abraham

  1176. but would be

  1177. for all people

  1178. everywhere.

1179. And then the apostle Peter

  1180. reminds us in 1 Peter 2

  1181. that that Jesus

  1182. then becomes the cornerstone

1183. and that we are being built

  1184. as his people

  1185. into a living temple.

  1186. That we are meant

1187. to be the building blocks

1188. of the temple of God.

  1189. That is,

  1190. we are the place

  1191. as we gather

  1192. in relationship

  1193. with one another

  1194. in this world

  1195. where God displays

  1196. his glory

1197. and where the meeting place

1198. between God and man is

  1199. in this world.

  1200. The very center

  1201. of God's work

  1202. in this era

  1203. is that the church

1204. that is the people of God

  1205. gathered and scattered

  1206. are,

  1207. is the place

  1208. where God

  1209. is meeting

  1210. with humanity.

1211. it is the very center

  1212. of it.

1213. And so we don't have

1214. to go to a place

  1215. with an altar

  1216. and sacrifice

  1217. burnt offerings.

1218. We don't have to find

  1219. goats and bulls

  1220. to do these things

  1221. anymore.

  1222. But what God

  1223. calls us to do

  1224. is to make

  1225. his people,

  1226. his church,

  1227. the priority

  1228. in our lives.

  1229. This is the most

  1230. important thing

  1231. about me.

  1232. And we don't have

  1233. sacrifices

  1234. to be repeated

  1235. because we know

  1236. that the sacrifice,

  1237. all those sacrifices

  1238. pointed ahead

1239. to the once for all

  1240. sacrifice of Jesus.

  1241. That he has taken

  1242. the sin

  1243. and the guilt

  1244. and the judgment.

  1245. He is sent

  1246. into the exile

  1247. of death

1248. so that he can be

  1249. brought back

  1250. in new life

  1251. and restore forever

  1252. our relationship

  1253. with him.

  1254. He is both

  1255. the sacrifice

  1256. and the scapegoat

  1257. who both dies

  1258. and is cut off

  1259. and sent out

  1260. into the wilderness

  1261. so that we might

  1262. be brought in

  1263. by faith

  1264. in him.

  1265. So briefly,

  1266. how do we apply

  1267. this to our lives?

  1268. Well,

  1269. the first is

  1270. we make

  1271. the worship

  1272. of God

  1273. our priority.

  1274. that is,

  1275. there are sacrifices

  1276. for us

  1277. to make.

  1278. Romans 12.1

  1279. tells us this,

  1280. I appeal to you

  1281. therefore,

  1282. brothers and sisters,

1283. by the mercy of God

  1284. to present your bodies

  1285. as living sacrifices,

  1286. holy and acceptable

  1287. to God,

  1288. which is your

  1289. spiritual worship.

  1290. when we join

  1291. with Christ

  1292. by faith,

  1293. he calls us

  1294. to say,

  1295. lay it all down

  1296. before me.

  1297. All that you have,

  1298. all of your life,

1299. put it on the altar,

  1300. make it mine,

  1301. give it to me

  1302. and let me do

  1303. what I want

  1304. with it.

  1305. There are kinds

  1306. of specific sacrifices

  1307. that flow from this

  1308. that we see

  1309. in the New Testament.

  1310. Ephesians 2 says,

  1311. and walk in love

  1312. as Christ loved us

  1313. and gave himself up

  1314. for us,

  1315. a fragrant offering

  1316. and a sacrifice

  1317. to God.

  1318. Our loving others

  1319. is a sacrifice

  1320. to God

  1321. just as Jesus'

  1322. sacrifice

  1323. was a loving act

  1324. for us.

  1325. And so,

  1326. are we willing

  1327. to make that

  1328. a priority

  1329. in our lives?

  1330. Or do we allow

  1331. ourselves

  1332. to become distracted

  1333. and selfish

  1334. and fearful

  1335. and think

  1336. that we have

  1337. to spend

  1338. our energies

  1339. building our own

  1340. walls instead?

  1341. Hebrews 13,

  1342. 15 and 16

  1343. points to another

  1344. kind of sacrifice.

  1345. Through him,

  1346. that is through Christ,

  1347. then let us

  1348. continually offer up

  1349. a sacrifice

  1350. of praise to God,

  1351. that is the fruit

  1352. of lips

  1353. that acknowledge

  1354. his name.

  1355. Do we make

  1356. praise to God

  1357. the thing

  1358. that we most

  1359. long for

  1360. in our lives?

  1361. Or do we really

  1362. wish deep down

  1363. that God would

  1364. let us get

  1365. some of that

  1366. praise too?

  1367. That people would

  1368. think really well

  1369. of us

  1370. and praise us

  1371. and think us

  1372. important?

  1373. Are we willing

  1374. to make

  1375. the praising

  1376. of God

  1377. the greatest

  1378. joy of our

  1379. hearts?

  1380. And then also,

  1381. there is a sacrifice

  1382. of submission

  1383. to God's word.

  1384. That is,

  1385. there is a sacrifice

  1386. of our independence.

  1387. Just as the people

  1388. followed the instructions

  1389. of Moses

  1390. and said,

  1391. as it is written,

  1392. we too are called

  1393. to sacrifice

  1394. our independence

  1395. and even

  1396. our own

  1397. sense of

  1398. what is right

  1399. and wrong

  1400. at times

  1401. to submit

  1402. to the God

  1403. of the universe

  1404. who has revealed

  1405. himself in the Bible.

  1406. And so,

  1407. we live lives

  1408. of ethical purity,

  1409. of morality,

  1410. but more than that,

  1411. we live lives

  1412. that seek

  1413. to honor God

  1414. and do things

  1415. his way

  1416. in humility

  1417. and in graciousness

  1418. and in patience

  1419. and in kindness

  1420. and in perseverance.

  1421. So,

  1422. there are many

  1423. sacrifices

  1424. that God

  1425. does call us

  1426. to make,

  1427. but they all

  1428. flow from

  1429. the fundamental

  1430. sacrifice

  1431. of saying,

  1432. God,

  1433. my life

  1434. is not my own.

  1435. You have bought

  1436. it with the price

  1437. of Jesus Christ.

  1438. Glorify me.

  1439. Glorify you,

  1440. Lord,

  1441. in my life,

  1442. whatever that means.

  1443. Help me to love.

  1444. Help me to praise

  1445. you.

  1446. It also means

1447. that we set our hearts

1448. on the glory of God.

  1449. And friends,

1450. it's so easy for us

  1451. to want glory

  1452. for ourselves

  1453. because,

  1454. of course,

  1455. you know,

1456. we were made for glory

  1457. and we experience this

  1458. on a regular basis,

  1459. that we were made

  1460. to be caught up

  1461. in something

  1462. greater than ourselves,

  1463. something more transcendent

  1464. and more wonderful

  1465. and bigger than ourselves.

  1466. And it's the thing

  1467. that we taste

  1468. in all sorts

  1469. of little ways.

  1470. It's the thing

  1471. that we taste

  1472. when your sports team

  1473. wins game seven

  1474. of the series

  1475. and you think,

  1476. woo,

  1477. you get caught up

  1478. in that glory of,

  1479. we won,

  1480. even though you're

  1481. just a spectator,

  1482. but we won

1483. and you get caught up

  1484. in something bigger

  1485. than yourself.

  1486. It's the glory

  1487. of the honor

  1488. of your country

  1489. acting for good

  1490. and battling evil

  1491. in the world.

  1492. It's the honor

  1493. in your work.

  1494. It's the glory

  1495. in your work

1496. of a job well done

  1497. and successfully done.

  1498. It's the glory

  1499. that we taste

  1500. when we go

  1501. to the Rockies

  1502. and we sit

  1503. on the shore

  1504. of Bierstadt Lake

1505. and look at the crags

1506. as they rise above us

1507. on a beautiful summer day.

  1508. It's the glory

  1509. that we feel

  1510. in the swell

  1511. of Mozart's Requiem.

  1512. All of these

  1513. are tastes of glory

  1514. that help us know

  1515. that as human beings

1516. we are made for glory,

  1517. but these aren't

  1518. the substance of them.

  1519. These are the signposts.

  1520. These are the,

  1521. this is the taste

  1522. at the mall

  1523. where you get,

  1524. hey,

1525. do you want a taste

  1526. so you can have

  1527. the whole meal?

  1528. That's what we're getting

  1529. in these,

  1530. right?

  1531. Four tastes

  1532. and shadows

  1533. that point

  1534. to a greater reality,

  1535. a greater reality

  1536. of a glory

  1537. that we will never

  1538. be able to manufacture

1539. and never be able to,

  1540. but a glory

  1541. that seeks us out

  1542. in Jesus Christ

1543. and comes and finds us

  1544. and invites us in

  1545. to his glory.

1546. And in the glory of God

  1547. we find his worthiness,

  1548. that he is good

  1549. and his steadfast love

  1550. endures forever.

  1551. that the God

  1552. of the Bible

  1553. will come to us

1554. with all of this goodness

  1555. and invite us

  1556. to say,

  1557. come and live,

  1558. sit and soak

  1559. and absorb

  1560. and revel

  1561. and rejoice

  1562. and sing

  1563. in my glory.

  1564. And not only

  1565. do we find

  1566. his worthiness,

  1567. but we also find

  1568. his weightiness.

  1569. we find

  1570. that God

  1571. is so great

  1572. that

  1573. as we

  1574. set our hearts

  1575. on him

  1576. and as we drink

  1577. from his goodness

  1578. and as we taste

  1579. of his faithfulness

  1580. and as we sing

  1581. his praises,

  1582. our hearts are tuned

  1583. for more of it

  1584. and we find

  1585. that he is able

  1586. to carry

  1587. that weight

  1588. that our greater

  1589. desires

  1590. that continue

  1591. to increase

  1592. find that God

  1593. is able to carry

  1594. all of those things.

  1595. John Hanks and I

  1596. were talking about

  1597. this yesterday

  1598. and he reminded me

  1599. of,

  1600. there was a

  1601. Veritas Forum

  1602. a couple years ago

  1603. where Shelley Kagan

  1604. who is a professor

  1605. of philosophy,

1606. the head of the department

  1607. and very highly respected,

  1608. was in a discussion

  1609. with N.T. Wright

  1610. and at one point

  1611. the topic of eternity

  1612. came up

  1613. and Shelley Kagan

  1614. says,

  1615. I don't want,

  1616. this is a paraphrase,

  1617. I don't want to live forever

  1618. because everything

  1619. that I desire

  1620. and everything

  1621. that I enjoy

  1622. eventually disappoint me

  1623. and I would hate

  1624. to live forever,

  1625. that would be horrible.

  1626. Friends,

  1627. the weight

  1628. of God's glory

  1629. is that we will

  1630. continue to plumb

  1631. the depths

  1632. of his goodness

  1633. and his mercy

  1634. of his grace

  1635. and his love

  1636. of his power

  1637. and his majesty

  1638. and his beauty

  1639. for the rest

  1640. of our lives

  1641. and we will never

  1642. be disappointed.

  1643. In fact,

  1644. it will lead us

  1645. into eternity

  1646. and we will feel

  1647. like the prodigal son

  1648. who has come home

  1649. from eating

  1650. the swine's food

  1651. into the household

  1652. of the father

1653. where we have a ring

  1654. and a robe

  1655. and sandals

  1656. and a party

  1657. where we sing praises

  1658. and are caught up

  1659. in this glory

  1660. of being with God.

  1661. and Jesus

  1662. will not disappoint.

  1663. And we,

  1664. like the old men

  1665. in the Old Testament

  1666. today,

  1667. look with,

  1668. through a dark,

  1669. through a glass

  1670. darkly.

  1671. We don't see

  1672. the fullness

  1673. of that glory

  1674. even now.

  1675. We've tasted it.

  1676. We know it's real

  1677. but we know

  1678. that there's a glory

  1679. yet to come.

1680. we know that one day

  1681. with unveiled faces

  1682. we will see him

1683. and we will be like him

1684. and the glory of God

  1685. will fill the earth

  1686. as he renews

  1687. ultimately

  1688. the people of God

1689. to the place of God

  1690. where they enjoy

  1691. the presence of God

  1692. forever

  1693. and his glory

  1694. will fill the heavens

  1695. and the earth.

  1696. Amen.

  1697. When we've been there

  1698. 10,000 years

  1699. bright shining

  1700. as the sun

  1701. we've no less days

  1702. to sing his praise

  1703. than when we first

  1704. begun.

  1705. Friends,

  1706. this is what

  1707. Ezra 3 tells us

  1708. is most important

  1709. about being

  1710. the people of God.

  1711. Will you make it

  1712. the thing that's

  1713. most important

  1714. for you today?

  1715. Let's pray.

  1716. Lord,

  1717. we have

  1718. touched on things

  1719. that are

  1720. greater than words.

  1721. We have spoken

  1722. of things

  1723. that

  1724. Lord,

  1725. are

  1726. too high

  1727. for us

  1728. to fully comprehend.

  1729. and yet

  1730. Lord,

  1731. we know

  1732. that

  1733. in this text

  1734. Lord,

  1735. you point us

  1736. to

  1737. yourself

  1738. that you

  1739. are worthy

  1740. of our worship

  1741. and Lord,

  1742. that

  1743. in you

  1744. we find

  1745. the glory

  1746. that our hearts

  1747. long for.

  1748. The glory

  1749. that

  1750. magnifies you

  1751. in all of your

  1752. greatness.

  1753. Lord,

  1754. help us

  1755. to taste

  1756. and see

  1757. that you

  1758. are good

  1759. and Lord,

  1760. help us

  1761. to order

  1762. our lives

  1763. that we

  1764. might pursue

  1765. these things

  1766. above all

  1767. else.

  1768. Lord,

  1769. free us

  1770. from our

  1771. fears

  1772. and the

  1773. things that

  1774. keep us

  1775. from pursuing

  1776. these things.

  1777. We pray

  1778. these things

  1779. in Jesus'

  1780. name.

  1781. Amen.
