  1. Well, good morning.

  2. As many of you know, I'm a huge fan of Les Miserables, the novel by Victor Hugo, and even more so, the musical.

  3. The novel's great.

  4. It's a long slog, though.

  5. But in the musical, one of the beautiful characters in the story is that of Eponine.

  6. Eponine is the woman who grew up in a terribly broken home.

  7. Who then, in the second act, you find her again on the street.

  8. She's living with her parents, who are her father's basically become a thug, who is seeking to rob people.

  9. But she has met the dashing young Marius, the student, the idealist, the dreamer, the one who hopes that the world can be a better place.

  10. And she has, in her own heart and mind, attached herself to him and put her dreams in being with him and living in the world that he imagines.

  11. And in a beautiful song, On My Own, she confesses how much she's invested herself into that dream, and yet how much she also knows that it's not really real.

  12. That she had hopes that her life would be going in a great direction.

  13. But she lives with doubt.

  14. She walks along the river, says she dreams that the lights are these beautiful symbols of love and relationship and being with him.

  15. But later in the song, she says,

  16. And in the morning, the river is just a river.

  17. Do you ever wonder if that's true in your life?

  18. If there are dreams that you have, but they're not real?

  19. That nothing's going to happen?

  20. You face this, especially when you go through times of transition.

  21. Typically, you move to a new place.

  22. And you wonder, what am I here for?

  23. What am I doing here?

  24. It comes when we face times of disappointment.

  25. We get laid off of work.

  26. We don't get the thing that we had hoped for in our lives.

  27. And of course, it faces us in times of real tragedy.

  28. When we face loss that dramatically changes the landscape of our lives.

  29. And I think that there's a spiritual question in the middle of it.

  30. Which is, is God really in this life with us?

  31. Or are we, like Eponine, on our own?

  32. Is God's power, is God's presence, is the reality of God with us or not?

  33. And I think that as we continue in our reading of the book of Ezra this morning, that we will see an answer to this question.

  34. Or at least we'll get a view into how we might answer that question as we look at it.

  35. If you want to look with me in Ezra, we're in Ezra chapter 8.

    Ezra 8 chapter mention

  36. I need someone to tell me what page it is.

  37. 367.

  38. So if you're using the Pew Bible, 367.

  39. Ezra chapter 8 is where we're going to be this morning.

    Ezra 8 chapter mention

  40. We are not going to start by reading the whole passage like I usually do.

  41. Because I'm going to spare you a genealogy.

  42. So we're actually going to read it as we go through it.

  43. And we'll read it along the way.

  44. But if you remember, if you haven't been here, if you're visiting,

  45. remember that in the book of Ezra,

  46. the big picture of this book is that God is rebuilding His people

  47. after sending them off into exile in the discipline of judgment.

  48. The nation of Israel had been conquered by the Babylonians and been scattered.

  49. The temple in Jerusalem had been razed to the ground.

  50. The city walls had been broken.

  51. And now, 70 years later, God is bringing His people back

  52. and rebuilding His people.

  53. And as He's rebuilding them, what we saw in chapters 1 through 6,

  54. is God is rebuilding them by rebuilding the temple

  55. and reestablishing their worship the way He had intended

  56. for the Old Testament nation of Israel to worship Him in Jerusalem

  57. with an altar and with a temple.

  58. And that's what we see in chapters 1 through 6.

  59. Chapters 7 through 10 now, the end of the book of Ezra

  60. is going to be the establishment of His people

  61. and some of their spiritual characteristics.

  62. We saw last week the establishment of God's Word.

  63. And we'll see next week the establishment of God's people in holiness.

  64. And this week we're going to look at how God establishes His people

  65. in their faith that God is truly with them.

  66. If you have your Bibles open, you can look with me at what I see as a key phrase.

  67. And it's actually both in chapters 7 and 8.

  68. And what we're actually seeing is chapter 7 is a decree of the king of Persia, Artaxerxes,

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  69. saying, we're going to send you, Ezra, with a group of people

  70. to go back and take the next step in really reestablishing the kingdom.

  71. And chapter 7 is mostly about this decree

  72. and how he's putting his hand on Ezra to say,

  73. you're going to go and bring the Word of God

  74. and establish your people under the Word of God.

  75. Chapter 8 is the story of this actually happening.

  76. But throughout this all, there is this phrase.

  77. Look with me in chapter 7, verse 6.

  78. Ezra went up from Babylonia.

  79. He was a scribe skilled in the law of Moses

  80. that the Lord, the God of Israel, had given.

  81. And the king granted him all that he asked

  82. for the hand of the Lord his God was on him.

  83. The end of verse 9 of chapter 7.

  84. For the good hand of his God was on him.

  85. If you skip to the end of chapter 7, you see it again.

  86. I took courage for the hand of the Lord my God was on me.

  87. And again, we see this through the narrative in chapter 8,

  88. repeated three times in verses 18, 22, and 31,

  89. that the hand of the Lord was on Ezra.

  90. Now, what does this mean?

  91. It's obviously an image.

  92. It's a hand.

  93. What is this hand doing?

  94. This hand is holding.

  95. This hand is providing.

  96. This hand is protecting.

  97. It is one of controlling even, right?

  98. In the Bible more broadly,

  99. to be given over into the hands of your enemy

  100. is a terrible thing

  101. because they're now in control of you.

  102. But here,

  103. what the writer is reminding us

  104. about what is going on in this chapter 8

  105. is that the hand of the Lord

  106. was with Ezra

  107. and with his people

  108. as he was going.

  109. Provision, protection,

  110. holding on to and not letting go.

  111. What we see in this chapter

  112. is that when God's hand is with his people,

  113. it evokes faithful courage in them

  114. to take the initiative

  115. and it is proven

  116. by God's faithful provision.

  117. So we're going to see

  118. those two aspects

  119. of faithful initiative

  120. and God's provision

  121. throughout two problems

  122. that emerge in the story.

  123. In verses 1 through 20,

  124. the problem is the people.

  125. What are the people

  126. that are going to go with Ezra?

  127. And then in verses 21 through 36,

  128. it's going to be

  129. the journey itself

  130. and the protection on the journey.

  131. And how is that going to happen?

  132. So these are the two things

  133. we're going to look through

  134. and we're just going to talk through it.

  135. What we see in verses 20,

  136. 1 through 20,

  137. is that God's hand

  138. in providing,

  139. we see God's hand

  140. providing for the,

  141. providing the right people

  142. to accomplish his purposes.

  143. So remember,

  144. we've seen the story.

  145. The king of Persia has said,

  146. Ezra, you may now go,

  147. collect people.

  148. And so in verse 8,

  149. in chapter 8, verse 1,

  150. you see,

  151. now Ezra is gathering people.

  152. There's been some sort of summons

  153. or call that's gone out

  154. and these people have responded.

  155. And in verses 2 through 14,

  156. we have a long list of people

  157. and I'm not going to read their names.

  158. But here's the really cool things about them.

  159. One is that it's listed by,

  160. starts with the priests.

  161. The first two people in verse 2,

  162. the sons of Phinehas

  163. and the sons of Ithamar,

  164. those are in the line of the priesthood.

  165. So at the very beginning,

  166. as they're returning,

  167. there's a reminder,

  168. God is providing people

  169. to continue the worship

  170. in the temple

  171. that has already begun

  172. that we saw established

  173. in chapters 1 through 6.

  174. So God is doing that.

  175. But then we see 12 tribes,

  176. basically 12 families.

  177. If you break it down there,

  178. there's a list of 12 different people.

  179. And what is going on there?

  180. Well, interestingly,

  181. if you take these names

  182. and you map them back onto the list,

  183. in chapter 2,

  184. the people who went with

  185. Joshua and Zerubbabel

  186. in the first migration,

  187. these people are of the same families.

  188. It seems that,

  189. particularly in the way

  190. that Ezra's recording this,

  191. God raised up people

  192. from 12 families,

  193. not necessarily from the 12 tribes,

  194. but from 12 families

  195. to continue to really spearhead this

  196. and to be the centerpiece of it.

  197. And it's possible

  198. that there are only 12 families listed

  199. because that's a picture of completeness,

  200. indicating the wholeness

  201. that Israel was returning to its land

  202. and returning to its people.

  203. As the story goes on,

  204. what you realize,

  205. and we'll read this in just a second,

  206. as the story goes on,

  207. you realize they get out a few days

  208. and they stop

  209. and they kind of take stock.

  210. I don't know if you,

  211. when I did campus ministry,

  212. when we had a big trip

  213. that was going down to Panama City Beach

  214. to do a spring break missions project,

  215. we often didn't know

  216. who was on the bus

  217. until the first stop that we had.

  218. Then we finally figured out

  219. who was actually on the bus

  220. and who we were responsible for

  221. for the rest of the trip.

  222. This is what happened to Ezra.

  223. They got out of town,

  224. stopped at this place along the river,

  225. and then they said,

  226. okay, who's here?

  227. And a problem arose

  228. because of all the people

  229. who had responded,

  230. all those families,

  231. there was not a single Levite

  232. among them.

  233. Now, it's not clear why that is.

  234. The Levites would have typically

  235. taken up about one-twelfth

  236. of the people of Israel

  237. because that's kind of how it works.

  238. And it's possible

  239. that there were fewer Levites

  240. because there were just fewer in number.

  241. It's not clear.

  242. It's also possible.

  243. One commentator suggested

  244. that the Levites weren't really keen

  245. to go back to Israel.

  246. In the exile,

  247. they had become normal people.

  248. But when they went back to Israel,

  249. God would ask them

  250. to play the special role

  251. of serving in the temple.

  252. They had a highly regimented

  253. and a highly ritualized life.

  254. It would be like you

  255. and your family saying,

  256. hey, thanks for living your life,

  257. but we're going to relocate you

  258. back to your hometown,

  259. and it's time to join the monastery.

  260. You don't get to do your job anymore.

  261. You now have a new job

  262. because that's what the Levites did.

  263. And it's possible

  264. the Levites didn't show up

  265. because they were thinking

  266. life in exile

  267. might have been pretty sweet.

  268. And maybe they weren't so excited.

  269. This is speculation.

  270. But whatever the problem was,

  271. it was real.

  272. And Ezra thought,

  273. what am I going to do?

  274. So read with me now,

  275. starting in verse 15.

  276. We'll pick up the narrative

  277. and read the text.

  278. I gathered them to the river

  279. that runs to Ahava,

  280. and there we camp three days.

  281. As I reviewed the people

  282. and the priests,

  283. I found there none

  284. of the sons of Levi.

  285. And then I sent for Eleazar,

  286. Ariel, Shemaiah,

  287. Elnathan,

  288. Jerib,

  289. Elnathan,

  290. Nathan,

  291. Zechariah,

  292. and Meshulam,

  293. leading men,

  294. and for Joerib

  295. and Elnathan,

  296. who were men of insight,

  297. and sent them to Ido,

  298. the leading man

  299. at the place,

  300. Kasipiah,

  301. telling them what to say

  302. to Ido and his brothers

  303. and the temple servants

  304. at the place,

  305. Kasipiah,

  306. namely,

  307. to send us ministers

  308. for the house of our God.

  309. And by the good hand

  310. of our God on us,

  311. they brought us

  312. a man of discretion,

  313. of the sons of Molly,

  314. the son of Levi,

  315. the son of Israel,

  316. namely,

  317. Sherabiah,

  318. with his sons

  319. and kinsmen,

  320. also,

  321. Hashabiah,

  322. and with him,

  323. Jeshiah,

  324. and the sons of Merari,

  325. who,

  326. with his kinsmen,

  327. and their sons,

  328. twenty,

  329. besides,

  330. two hundred and twenty

  331. of the temple servants,

  332. whom David

  333. and his officials

  334. had set apart

  335. to attend the Levites.

  336. These were all mentioned

  337. by name.

  338. Okay.

  339. We didn't get to avoid

  340. all the names,

  341. did we?

  342. But here we go.

  343. What happened?

  344. Ezra looked at this problem

  345. and he said,

  346. this is not good.

  347. As we go back

  348. and as we continue

  349. to build the people,

  350. we need Levites.

  351. We need to have those

  352. who are specially tasked

  353. by God

  354. to serve in the temple.

  355. And so he delegated,

  356. he chose twelve men

  357. and he sent them

  358. as a delegation

  359. to a place

  360. that historically has,

  361. we have no corroboration

  362. or understanding

  363. of what this place was,

  364. except that it seems

  365. that it was a place

  366. where probably

  367. there was a bunch

  368. of Levites.

  369. or some contact

  370. with the tribe

  371. of Levi.

  372. So he sent

  373. this delegation

  374. of twelve leading men

  375. plus two others

  376. who were particularly

  377. interpreters of the law.

  378. That might be a way

  379. to describe men

  380. of insight

  381. would also be those

  382. who particularly

  383. knew the law.

  384. And he sent them

  385. and asked for them

  386. to come.

  387. Send men,

  388. ministers

  389. of the house

  390. of Levi,

  391. the house of God.

  392. Send us provision.

  393. Now look,

  394. these men

  395. already hadn't

  396. showed up.

  397. They already

  398. hadn't responded

  399. to the call.

  400. It would have been

  401. very easy to think,

  402. hey,

  403. they knew the call.

  404. They're not coming.

  405. Why are we even asking?

  406. But Ezra believed

  407. that the hand

  408. of the Lord

  409. was on him.

  410. You see that

  411. in verse 18.

  412. By the good hand

  413. of our God

  414. on us,

  415. they brought us

  416. response.

  417. He took a step

  418. of faith to say,

  419. I can't make anyone go,

  420. but I'm going to take

  421. a special step.

  422. I'm going to step out

  423. in faith and say,

  424. will you come with us

  425. to serve

  426. in the house of God?

  427. And as he was doing that,

  428. he asked the Lord

  429. to provide.

  430. And the Lord did.

  431. Ezra was intentional.

  432. He was thoughtful.

  433. But he was also dependent.

  434. And God showed up

  435. and responded.

  436. And as these men,

  437. Sherebiah and his sons

  438. and Hashabiah

  439. and others,

  440. 38 Levites

  441. and 220 temple servants

  442. were provided

  443. to go with the people

  444. and to serve

  445. in the house of God.

  446. What a great thing.

  447. God provided

  448. the people.

  449. Ezra couldn't do this.

  450. Ezra had the decree

  451. from the king,

  452. go and take anyone

  453. who wants to go.

  454. But Ezra couldn't

  455. make anyone go.

  456. And yet God

  457. raised up these people

  458. to repopulate

  459. the place

  460. that God had intended

  461. for his people

  462. to dwell

  463. and to continue

  464. the worship

  465. in the temple

  466. that God had rebuilt

  467. in Jerusalem.

  468. So what do we think

  469. about this

  470. today?

  471. Well,

  472. in the church

  473. we don't need

  474. Levites anymore.

  475. Thankfully.

  476. We don't have a temple.

  477. We don't have an altar.

  478. The Old Testament system

  479. was meant to point us

  480. not to the way

  481. that the church

  482. now should worship

  483. but to point us

  484. to Christ

  485. and all that he had done

  486. has done for us.

  487. All that he

  488. it pointed ahead

  489. to what he would do

  490. and now for us

  491. we know what he has done

  492. so that we might

  493. truly be the people

  494. of God

  495. and so that we might

  496. truly worship him.

  497. And yet

  498. God is still

  499. raising up the people

  500. to do the work

  501. that he wants to do

  502. among us.

  503. Is he not?

  504. This is what Paul

  505. refers to

  506. in Ephesians

  507. or in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  508. chapter 12

  509. where he says

  510. the church

  511. is the body of Christ

  512. the relationship

  513. the group of people

  514. who are in Christ

  515. and every single one

  516. of them

  517. God has raised up

  518. not simply

  519. to be a member

  520. but to be an active

  521. participant

  522. in the body of Christ

  523. that each person

  524. has a particular role

  525. that God has designed

  526. for them to play

  527. in his church.

  528. And some may have

  529. greater honor

  530. and prestige

  531. and some may be

  532. more behind the scenes

  533. and less visible

  534. but everyone

  535. has one.

  536. Have you found yours?

  537. And are you being faithful

  538. to respond?

  539. We also see

  540. that in Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  541. chapter 4

  542. God raises up

  543. men and women

  544. in leadership roles

  545. particularly

  546. who may have

  547. these abilities

  548. apostles

  549. prophets

  550. pastors

  551. and teachers

  552. particular gifting

  553. to build

  554. the church

  555. so that we may

  556. all do the work

  557. of the ministry.

  558. As I was praying

  559. and just thinking

  560. about this passage

  561. I just want to say

  562. how thankful I am

  563. for the elders

  564. that I get to serve with

  565. for the deacons

  566. that we get to work

  567. together with

  568. and even more broadly

  569. than that

  570. for the godly people

  571. that he has raised up

  572. in this church

  573. to do the work

  574. of ministry

  575. and to train others.

  576. What a privilege

  577. it is

  578. to be in this

  579. with you

  580. and to see God

  581. continue to do this.

  582. I pray that we might

  583. be thankful to God

  584. for his provision.

  585. I pray that we might

  586. be active

  587. in faithfully

  588. playing the role

  589. that he has called us

  590. each one to play.

  591. And you know

  592. finally

  593. I pray that we'll be active

  594. in asking God

  595. to continue to provide

  596. that we would be a church

  597. that prays hard

  598. that prays consistently

  599. that prays dependently

  600. that God would continue

  601. to provide

  602. for this church

  603. the people

  604. to do

  605. what he wants

  606. to do

  607. in us

  608. and among us

  609. and through us.

  610. So God's hand

  611. has raised up

  612. the people

  613. to do

  614. what he wants

  615. to do.

  616. We see in the rest

  617. of the story

  618. that God's hand

  619. protects them

  620. while they're

  621. on their journey.

  622. Look with me

  623. at verses 21

  624. and following

  625. in chapter 8.

  626. Then I

  627. and that I

  628. is Ezra

  629. then I

  630. proclaimed a fast

  631. there

  632. at the river

  633. of Ahava

  634. that we might

  635. humble ourselves

  636. before our God

  637. to seek from him

  638. a safe journey

  639. for ourselves

  640. our children

  641. and all our goods

  642. for I was ashamed

  643. to ask the king

  644. for a band

  645. of soldiers

  646. and horsemen

  647. to protect us

  648. against the enemy

  649. on our way

  650. since we had told

  651. the king

  652. the hand of our God

  653. is for good

  654. on all who seek him

  655. and the power

  656. of his wrath

  657. is against all

  658. who forsake him.

  659. So we fasted

  660. and implored

  661. our God

  662. for this

  663. and he listened

  664. to our entreaty.

  665. So the second problem

  666. having now

  667. provided the Levites

  668. in a record time

  669. by the way

  670. it takes a total

  671. of about 12 days

  672. for them to

  673. get out of town

  674. realize their problem

  675. send this delegation

  676. and have people

  677. can you imagine

  678. that call

  679. people just picked up

  680. their lives

  681. and said sure

  682. we'll move to a place

  683. we've never been

  684. and live our lives there

  685. but they did.

  686. So anyway

  687. so God provides his people

  688. and now

  689. they're about to embark

  690. and they realize

  691. okay this is a large

  692. group of people

  693. probably thousands

  694. of people

  695. and they're carrying

  696. a lot of stuff.

  697. If you look at the story

  698. if you look back

  699. at chapter 7

  700. and then if you look

  701. in the next section

  702. chapter 8

  703. verses 24

  704. and following

  705. I'm not going to read

  706. all the details

  707. but goodness gracious

  708. the king of Persia

  709. was saying

  710. as I'm sending you

  711. I'm going to send you

  712. with a lot

  713. of supplies

  714. basically a lot

  715. of money

  716. and a lot of

  717. a lot of valuable

  718. things for you

  719. to use

  720. in the service

  721. in the temple.

  722. Now historically

  723. one of the interesting

  724. things we know

  725. is that Artaxerxes

  726. was ruling over

  727. the Persian Empire

  728. at this time

  729. when it stretched

  730. all the way

  731. from Greece

  732. to modern day India.

  733. So it was

  734. Greece

  735. to modern day India.

  736. There we go.

  737. And it

  738. was a huge empire

  739. and we know

  740. that Artaxerxes

  741. had just gone

  742. through a time

  743. where there had been

  744. multiple rebellions

  745. against him

  746. and it's very possible

  747. that God

  748. in overseeing

  749. all of this

  750. had moved

  751. Artaxerxes

  752. to want to

  753. reestablish

  754. or strengthen

  755. his ties

  756. with a strong

  757. ally

  758. in the middle

  759. of particularly

  760. the Greece

  761. and Egypt

  762. part

  763. where

  764. they were actually

  765. where the

  766. rebellions were happening.

  767. And so

  768. this may have been

  769. the motivation

  770. behind

  771. some of the support

  772. that Artaxerxes

  773. was giving

  774. and yet God

  775. using the global

  776. movements

  777. of socio-political

  778. power

  779. to provide

  780. for his people

  781. and so

  782. he was sending

  783. them with all

  784. this stuff

  785. so that they

  786. might be

  787. well established

  788. and flourish

  789. in Jerusalem.

  790. but they didn't

  791. want to take

  792. soldiers with

  793. them.

  794. Did you see

  795. how interesting

  796. it was?

  797. Verse 22

  798. for I was ashamed

  799. to ask the king

  800. for a band

  801. of soldiers

  802. and horsemen

  803. and ashamed

  804. is an interesting

  805. word.

  806. I'm not sure

  807. if English

  808. has the right

  809. connotations

  810. for what's here

  811. because do you

  812. see what he did?

  813. He went to the king

  814. and he said

  815. listen

  816. we serve

  817. a God

  818. who is able

  819. to protect

  820. his own

  821. that those

  822. who God

  823. has favor

  824. with

  825. that God

  826. is a powerful

  827. force

  828. and he might

  829. have said it

  830. to say

  831. hey we're going

  832. to be a good

  833. ally to you

  834. if you honor

  835. our God

  836. we're going

  837. to be a good

  838. ally to you.

  839. However he said

  840. it

  841. he said

  842. very strongly

  843. we believe

  844. in a God

  845. who is going

  846. to take care

  847. of us

  848. who will

  849. protect us

  850. against

  851. our enemies

  852. and in light

  853. of that testimony

  854. he didn't feel

  855. like he could

  856. then say

  857. hey our God

  858. can protect us

  859. and oh by the way

  860. can you send us

  861. some soldiers

  862. to protect us

  863. while we go?

  864. He said

  865. no

  866. I think we need

  867. to step out

  868. in faith

  869. and so he called

  870. the people

  871. to fast

  872. and to pray

  873. one side note

  874. this is not

  875. the way

  876. we must

  877. always respond

  878. to such situations

  879. we'll find out

  880. in just a few

  881. chapters

  882. in the beginning

  883. of Nehemiah

  884. when Nehemiah

  885. brings another

  886. delegation back

  887. he has an escort

  888. from the king

  889. of Persia

  890. there might be

  891. good reasons

  892. for that

  893. Nehemiah's mission

  894. is a little more

  895. political

  896. Ezra's is a little

  897. more religious

  898. but

  899. I want you

  900. to see

  901. that it's

  902. not a given

  903. that this was

  904. the only way

  905. to act in faith

  906. but it was

  907. very clear

  908. for Ezra

  909. this is the way

  910. that we ought

  911. to do it

  912. and so he

  913. stepped down

  914. in faith

  915. and he called

  916. the people

  917. to fast

  918. and pray

  919. that they would

  920. recognize

  921. their dependence

  922. on the Lord

  923. that they would

  924. reaffirm

  925. their allegiance

  926. to the Lord

  927. after

  928. remember

  929. part of the

  930. reason for

  931. the exile

  932. was that

  933. rather than

  934. trusting in

  935. the God

  936. who had

  937. called them

  938. and established

  939. them in Israel

  940. to protect them

  941. they ran after

  942. all sorts of

  943. political alliances

  944. to try to save

  945. themselves

  946. and so Ezra

  947. was stepping in

  948. saying no

  949. we are going

  950. to trust God

  951. so he called

  952. the people

  953. to this

  954. act of

  955. consecration

  956. to this act

  957. of dependence

  958. and this bold

  959. ask

  960. God will you

  961. keep us safe

  962. and in verses

  963. 24 through 34

  964. we see

  965. basically

  966. they arrived

  967. they made it

  968. God

  969. protected them

  970. all

  971. the way

  972. through

  973. Ezra

  974. took a big

  975. step

  976. by not

  977. asking

  978. for that

  979. protection

  980. and by

  981. calling the

  982. people

  983. to fast

  984. and pray

  985. God

  986. showed up

  987. and delivered

  988. his people

  989. to Israel

  990. with all

  991. the stuff

  992. and those

  993. Levites

  994. that had been

  995. raised up

  996. they were the

  997. caretakers

  998. of the riches

  999. and they had

  1000. to count it

  1001. at the beginning

  1002. and then count it

  1003. at the end

  1004. to make sure

  1005. all of it

  1006. was there

  1007. that not only

  1008. was it not

  1009. taken by

  1010. bandits

  1011. and thieves

  1012. but it wasn't

  1013. taken by

  1014. people

  1015. internally

  1016. God

  1017. brought

  1018. them

  1019. through

  1020. and God

  1021. brought

  1022. this second

  1023. wave

  1024. then

  1025. of people

  1026. to Israel

  1027. to establish

  1028. his people

  1029. again

  1030. and to

  1031. rebuild

  1032. them

  1033. I think

  1034. the question

  1035. you know

  1036. as I think

  1037. about

  1038. the writer

  1039. of this

  1040. why was

  1041. this being

  1042. written down

  1043. it was being

  1044. written down

  1045. so that

  1046. the future

  1047. generations

  1048. of Israelites

  1049. would hear

  1050. the words

  1051. the hand

  1052. of the Lord

  1053. was with us

  1054. and God

  1055. was faithful

  1056. and because

  1057. God was faithful

  1058. we took

  1059. great steps

  1060. of faith

  1061. to honor

  1062. him

  1063. and to pursue

  1064. him

  1065. and to be

  1066. his people

  1067. and to be

  1068. to do

  1069. what he called

  1070. us to do

  1071. and we saw

  1072. him provide

  1073. and the question

  1074. that I think

  1075. this chapter

  1076. puts before

  1077. us today

  1078. is do we

  1079. believe that

  1080. God will

  1081. be the same

  1082. for us

  1083. are we

  1084. willing to

  1085. take bold

  1086. risky moves

  1087. of faith

  1088. with the

  1089. spirit of

  1090. Jonathan

  1091. and his

  1092. armor bearer

  1093. let's go up

  1094. and maybe

  1095. the Lord

  1096. will give

  1097. them into

  1098. our hands

  1099. we don't

  1100. have to

  1101. have this

  1102. arrogant

  1103. faith that

  1104. says we

  1105. know what

  1106. God is

  1107. going to

  1108. do

  1109. and he

  1110. we don't

  1111. have to

  1112. be arrogant

  1113. in it

  1114. but the

  1115. question is

  1116. are we

  1117. willing to

  1118. be faithful

  1119. even when

  1120. it seems

  1121. risky

  1122. even when

  1123. it seems

  1124. unsafe

  1125. it's very

  1126. easy

  1127. to both

  1128. be impetuous

  1129. and assuming

  1130. on God

  1131. but it's

  1132. also very

  1133. easy for

  1134. us to

  1135. shrink back

  1136. in self

  1137. dependence

  1138. and in

  1139. fear

  1140. and you

  1141. know one

  1142. of the

  1143. things that's

  1144. striking in

  1145. this is that

  1146. when they get

  1147. there in

  1148. verses 35

  1149. and 36

  1150. what do

  1151. they do

  1152. they worship

  1153. God

  1154. they bring

  1155. the offerings

  1156. they bring

  1157. the sacrifices

  1158. they carry

  1159. out some

  1160. other things

  1161. they distribute

  1162. some of

  1163. the notices

  1164. to the

  1165. local

  1166. believers

  1167. but they

  1168. came and

  1169. they worship

  1170. God

  1171. and I

  1172. think they

  1173. worshiped

  1174. God

  1175. because they

  1176. had trusted

  1177. God

  1178. and I

  1179. know

  1180. Greg did

  1181. this just

  1182. a few

  1183. weeks ago

  1184. so I'm

  1185. not going

  1186. to recount

  1187. the whole

  1188. story of

  1189. this church

  1190. but this

  1191. church has

  1192. seen seasons

  1193. of real

  1194. real faith

  1195. stepping out

  1196. beyond what

  1197. would be

  1198. humanly

  1199. reasonable

  1200. whether it

  1201. be a

  1202. pastor moving

  1203. from England

  1204. sight unseen

  1205. to help a

  1206. struggling small

  1207. group of

  1208. people

  1209. whether it

  1210. be buying

  1211. a large

  1212. building that

  1213. was beyond

  1214. the church's

  1215. budget to

  1216. buy and

  1217. seeing it

  1218. paid off

  1219. in five

  1220. years

  1221. whether it

  1222. be stepping

  1223. into a

  1224. co-pastorate

  1225. which everyone

  1226. has said

  1227. won't work

  1228. and us

  1229. working

  1230. together

  1231. this church

  1232. has taken

  1233. risky steps

  1234. at times

  1235. and it's

  1236. been beautiful

  1237. to see

  1238. God's

  1239. hands

  1240. when people

  1241. ask me

  1242. about this

  1243. church

  1244. and what

  1245. have you

  1246. done to

  1247. make it

  1248. so successful

  1249. I usually

  1250. just shrug

  1251. my shoulders

  1252. and say

  1253. you know

  1254. I just

  1255. feel like

  1256. God is

  1257. going ahead

  1258. of us

  1259. and we're

  1260. just trying

  1261. not to

  1262. mess it

  1263. up

  1264. because I've

  1265. seen God

  1266. provide

  1267. and I've

  1268. seen God's

  1269. hand

  1270. and we do

  1271. need to

  1272. continue to

  1273. be humble

  1274. to be

  1275. dependent

  1276. and we

  1277. need to

  1278. continue to

  1279. be faithful

  1280. to the

  1281. gospel of

  1282. Jesus Christ

  1283. and what

  1284. God has

  1285. called us

  1286. to

  1287. that we

  1288. would continue

  1289. to make

  1290. the good

  1291. news about

  1292. Jesus

  1293. central

  1294. gospel

  1295. not only

  1296. what we

  1297. do

  1298. here

  1299. as we

  1300. gather

  1301. and as

  1302. we

  1303. interact

  1304. with

  1305. one

  1306. another

  1307. but as

  1308. we

  1309. live

  1310. in this

  1311. city

  1312. that we

  1313. would

  1314. continue

  1315. to make

  1316. the gospel

  1317. known

  1318. do you

  1319. believe that

  1320. God's hand

  1321. is on us

  1322. and are you

  1323. acting in

  1324. faith as a

  1325. result

  1326. and let me

  1327. be really

  1328. clear on

  1329. this

  1330. because I

  1331. can do

  1332. this today

  1333. especially

  1334. well

  1335. this does

  1336. not mean

  1337. that I'm

  1338. asking you

  1339. for more

  1340. money for

  1341. our capital

  1342. campaign

  1343. if that's

  1344. in your

  1345. brain

  1346. just please

  1347. remove that

  1348. that is not

  1349. what I'm

  1350. saying

  1351. we just

  1352. heard a

  1353. report that

  1354. Sarah gave

  1355. about how

  1356. God has

  1357. provided

  1358. for us

  1359. in an

  1360. amazing way

  1361. to move

  1362. ahead

  1363. and praise

  1364. the Lord

  1365. for that

  1366. right

  1367. what looked

  1368. honestly to

  1369. me two weeks

  1370. ago like

  1371. I don't know

  1372. if we're gonna

  1373. make it

  1374. I don't know

  1375. if this is

  1376. really gonna

  1377. work

  1378. and God

  1379. just said

  1380. oh no

  1381. I am here

  1382. with you

  1383. what we

  1384. as the

  1385. elders have

  1386. prayed from

  1387. the very

  1388. beginning

  1389. as we've

  1390. thought about

  1391. this building

  1392. campaign

  1393. and in

  1394. our hopes

  1395. that by

  1396. doing it

  1397. it might

  1398. establish a

  1399. base of

  1400. ministry

  1401. for 50

  1402. 100

  1403. 200

  1404. years

  1405. in this

  1406. city

  1407. but that

  1408. most of

  1409. all that

  1410. our

  1411. congregation

  1412. would see

  1413. the

  1414. see the

  1415. hear the

  1416. call to

  1417. be taking

  1418. up the

  1419. mission

  1420. of our

  1421. church

  1422. in this

  1423. city

  1424. and around

  1425. the world

  1426. that we

  1427. would be

  1428. saying

  1429. God

  1430. how do

  1431. you

  1432. want

  1433. to

  1434. use

  1435. me

  1436. what's

  1437. my

  1438. place

  1439. in

  1440. this

  1441. how do

  1442. you

  1443. want

  1444. me

  1445. to

  1446. step

  1447. out

  1448. in

  1449. faith

  1450. to

  1451. get

  1452. involved

  1453. in

  1454. what

  1455. God

  1456. is

  1457. doing

  1458. in

  1459. Trinity

  1460. and

  1461. through

  1462. Trinity

  1463. in

  1464. this

  1465. world

  1466. how does

  1467. God

  1468. want

  1469. me

  1470. to

  1471. reach

  1472. out

  1473. to

  1474. one

  1475. another

  1476. and

  1477. getting

  1478. involved

  1479. in

  1480. the

  1481. ministry

  1482. to

  1483. one

  1484. another

  1485. within

  1486. the

  1487. church

  1488. how does

  1489. God

  1490. want

  1491. me

  1492. to

  1493. take

  1494. a

  1495. step

  1496. of

  1497. faith

  1498. and

  1499. talk

  1500. to

  1501. my

  1502. co-worker

  1503. my

  1504. neighbor

  1505. about

  1506. Jesus

  1507. how does

  1508. God

  1509. want

  1510. me

  1511. to

  1512. step

  1513. out

  1514. in

  1515. faith

  1516. by

  1517. being

  1518. more

  1519. regular

  1520. in

  1521. praying

  1522. and

  1523. fasting

  1524. and

  1525. asking

  1526. God

  1527. to

  1528. bless

  1529. and

  1530. continue

  1531. to

  1532. multiply

  1533. the

  1534. ministries

  1535. of

  1536. this

  1537. church

  1538. not

  1539. that

  1540. Trinity

  1541. would

  1542. be

  1543. seen

  1544. to

  1545. be

  1546. great

  1547. but

  1548. that

  1549. Jesus

  1550. would

  1551. be

  1552. great

  1553. among

  1554. us

  1555. for

  1556. you

  1557. know

  1558. friends

  1559. this

  1560. is

  1561. the

  1562. good

  1563. news

  1564. of

  1565. the

  1566. gospel

  1567. and

  1568. this

  1569. is

  1570. how

  1571. we

  1572. know

  1573. that

  1574. God's

  1575. hand

  1576. is

  1577. with

  1578. us

  1579. as

  1580. his

  1581. children

  1582. it

  1583. is

  1584. because

  1585. God

  1586. himself

  1587. has

  1588. come

  1589. to

  1590. be

  1591. with

  1592. us

  1593. in

  1594. the

  1595. person

  1596. of

  1597. Jesus

  1598. and

  1599. this

  1600. is

  1601. our

  1602. great

  1603. confidence

  1604. and

  1605. you

  1606. know

  1607. what

  1608. we

  1609. may

  1610. build

  1611. a

  1612. building

  1613. and

  1614. it

  1615. might

  1616. fall

  1617. down

  1618. tomorrow

  1619. and

  1620. think

  1621. okay

  1622. well

  1623. that

  1624. wasn't

  1625. what

  1626. God

  1627. was

  1628. with

  1629. us

  1630. in

  1631. but

  1632. God

  1633. is

  1634. always

  1635. with

  1636. his

  1637. people

  1638. because

  1639. he

  1640. has

  1641. come

  1642. in

  1643. Jesus

  1644. he

  1645. said

  1646. that

  1647. he

  1648. will

  1649. build

  1650. his

  1651. church

  1652. on

  1653. the

  1654. rock

  1655. of

  1656. Jesus

  1657. Christ

  1658. that

  1659. he

  1660. will

  1661. build

  1662. his

  1663. church

  1664. on

  1665. the

  1666. proclamation

  1667. of

  1668. what

  1669. he

  1670. has

  1671. done

  1672. in

  1673. Jesus

  1674. that

  1675. Jesus

  1676. by

  1677. his

  1678. life

  1679. and

  1680. death

  1681. and

  1682. resurrection

  1683. has

  1684. established

  1685. a new

  1686. people

  1687. by

  1688. taking

  1689. the

  1690. pain

  1691. and

  1692. the

  1693. penalty

  1694. of

  1695. our

  1696. sin

  1697. upon

  1698. himself

  1699. by

  1700. rising

  1701. from

  1702. the

  1703. dead

  1704. to

  1705. defeat

  1706. sin

  1707. and

  1708. death

  1709. he

  1710. is

  1711. able

  1712. to

  1713. establish

  1714. a

  1715. new

  1716. people

  1717. who

  1718. will

  1719. be

  1720. his

  1721. forever

  1722. and

  1723. this

  1724. Jesus

  1725. now

  1726. calls

  1727. us

  1728. to

  1729. be

  1730. those

  1731. who

  1732. live

  1733. with

  1734. great

  1735. faith

  1736. that

  1737. he

  1738. who

  1739. is

  1740. able

  1741. to

  1742. save

  1743. us

  1744. from

  1745. our

  1746. sin

  1747. will

  1748. he

  1749. not

  1750. be

  1751. able

  1752. to

  1753. deliver

  1754. us

  1755. from

  1756. all

  1757. things

  1758. that

  1759. he

  1760. who

  1761. did

  1762. not

  1763. spare

  1764. his

  1765. son

  1766. but

  1767. gave

  1768. him

  1769. for

  1770. us

  1771. all

  1772. will

  1773. things

  1774. all

  1775. the

  1776. things

  1777. that

  1778. he

  1779. wants

  1780. so

  1781. that

  1782. we

  1783. might

  1784. glorify

  1785. him

  1786. all

  1787. the

  1788. things

  1789. that

  1790. he

  1791. wants

  1792. so

  1793. that

  1794. we

  1795. might

  1796. worship

  1797. him

  1798. and

  1799. be

  1800. to

  1801. the

  1802. praise

  1803. of

  1804. his

  1805. name

  1806. let's

  1807. pray

  1808. Lord

  1809. thank you

  1810. for this

  1811. encouragement

  1812. this

  1813. reminder

  1814. of how

  1815. you

  1816. have

  1817. been

  1818. faithful

  1819. to

  1820. your

  1821. people

  1822. in

  1823. the

  1824. past

  1825. Lord

  1826. thank

  1827. you

  1828. for

  1829. the

  1830. ways

  1831. that

  1832. we

  1833. have

  1834. seen

  1835. your

  1836. faithfulness

  1837. in

  1838. our

  1839. lives

  1840. God

  1841. I

  1842. pray

  1843. this

  1844. morning

  1845. that

  1846. you

  1847. would

  1848. Lord

  1849. help

  1850. us

  1851. to

  1852. be

  1853. women

  1854. and

  1855. men

  1856. of

  1857. faith

  1858. who

  1859. believe

  1860. and

  1861. trust

  1862. that

  1863. you

  1864. are

  1865. with

  1866. us

  1867. that

  1868. we

  1869. are

  1870. not

  1871. on

  1872. our

  1873. own

  1874. in

  1875. this

  1876. but

  1877. that

  1878. you

  1879. are

  1880. with

  1881. us

  1882. and

  1883. that

  1884. because

  1885. you

  1886. are

  1887. with

  1888. us

  1889. we

  1890. can

  1891. step

  1892. out

  1893. in

  1894. faith

  1895. and

  1896. trust

  1897. you

  1898. we

  1899. pray

  1900. these

  1901. things

  1902. in

  1905. Amen
