  1. Good morning, church.

  2. It's good to see you this morning.

  3. Our sermon passage today is Nehemiah, chapters 3 and 4.

    Nehemiah 3 chapter mention

  4. That's page 371 in the Pew Bible.

  5. Let me invite you to turn there with me.

  6. Nehemiah, chapters 3 and 4.

    Nehemiah 3 chapter mention

  7. Now, to set the stage for our text, I want to begin by reading the end of actually Nehemiah, chapter 2, verses 17 through 20.

    Nehemiah 2:17–20

  8. So let me read verses 17 through 20 of chapter 2 for us, and then I'll pray, and then we'll dive in.

  9. So this is Nehemiah speaking to the returned exiles in Jerusalem.

  10. And they said,

  11. Let us rise up and build.

  12. So they strengthened their hands for the good work.

  13. But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite's servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it,

  14. they jeered at us and despised us and said,

  15. What is this thing that you are doing?

  16. Are you rebelling against the king?

  17. Then I replied to them,

  18. The God of heaven will make us prosper,

  19. and we his servants will arise and build.

  20. But you have no portion or right or claim in Jerusalem.

  21. Let's pray together.

  22. Father, we do ask for your blessing upon this time that we spend in these moments attending to your word.

  23. God, with the psalmists, we cry out that if you remain silent to us, God,

  24. we are like those who go down to the grave.

  25. Hearing your word spoken, hearing your voice coming to us through your word,

  26. God, these are our only hope of life.

  27. So we sit before you this morning, God, hungry to hear your words.

  28. God, would you help me as I unpack this passage and preach this word?

  29. Lord, would my human words be swept up into the words of your spirit

  30. to faithfully proclaim what is here and what you are saying to your church?

  31. We pray all this, Father, in Jesus' name.

  32. Amen.

  33. Well, it must have seemed like an impossible task.

  34. Build a wall around Jerusalem.

  35. The year is 445 B.C.,

  36. 90 years after the first group of Jews returned to the land of Judah

  37. after the exile to Babylon.

  38. At this point in history, the temple has been rebuilt.

  39. The word of God is being taught,

  40. but the city itself is still largely in ruins.

  41. And Nehemiah has just arrived in Jerusalem

  42. from the Persian imperial capital of Susa,

  43. and he's gathered together the people,

  44. and he's told them of his plan

  45. to restore the dignity of the city

  46. and rebuild its walls.

  47. Now, this was a huge task, a huge task.

  48. It was roughly 2,300 meters around the city.

  49. That's about the length of 250 football fields.

  50. How many football fields would you take up

  51. if this was the project before us?

  52. We'd each have to take about one.

  53. 100 yards, each of us.

  54. Build a wall.

  55. And what was left of the original wall

  56. was nothing but charred remains and rubble,

  57. which was utterly unusable for the reconstruction.

  58. But, you know, it wasn't just a huge task.

  59. It was a despised task.

  60. The surrounding people, their neighbors,

  61. hear about it, and they ridicule them.

  62. They despise them.

  63. So how would this small band of returned Jewish exiles

  64. be any match on the one hand

  65. for the magnitude of such a task?

  66. But not just that.

  67. On the other hand,

  68. how would they be any match

  69. for the opposition to the task?

  70. You know, we might ask the same question of ourselves,

  71. the church, today.

  72. Of course, now that Christ has come

  73. and poured out his spirit at Pentecost,

  74. God's people are no longer a physical city

  75. amidst the nations of Palestine.

  76. Rather, we are a spiritual city

  77. amidst the nations of the whole world.

  78. We're not building physical walls anymore.

  79. We're building spiritual communities

  80. of faith and hope and love.

  81. And yet, the task before us

  82. to build the church,

  83. to advance God's kingdom,

  84. is equally daunting, if not more so.

  85. Just like in Nehemiah's day,

  86. there is much work to be done.

  87. The magnitude of the task is great.

  88. And just like in Nehemiah's day,

  89. there's opposition that we need to withstand.

  90. Think about the magnitude of our task.

  91. There are about 860,000 people

  92. who live in New Haven County,

  93. many of whom have never heard the gospel,

  94. many of whom have actually had

  95. terrible experiences with the church

  96. and frankly want nothing to do with Jesus.

  97. Statistics about addiction, poverty,

  98. mental health, abuse,

  99. are at staggering levels.

  100. Not just outside the church,

  101. but inside the church.

  102. And rather than being communities

  103. of faith and hope and love,

  104. churches can often deteriorate

  105. into places of cynicism

  106. and bitterness and burnout.

  107. The task of building up the church

  108. and advancing God's kingdom

  109. is staggering.

  110. The magnitude of the task before us is great.

  111. But think about the opposition

  112. to the task as well.

  113. Christianity is often ridiculed

  114. as sort of an outdated,

  115. antiquated thing, isn't it?

  116. Too old, too prescriptive,

  117. too narrow to be of any real use.

  118. Besides, some think,

  119. haven't we tried it already?

  120. What makes us think it's going to work now?

  121. What good has it done?

  122. But you know,

  123. the opposition isn't just ridicule

  124. or unbelief from the world.

  125. We also have to contend

  126. with our own sinful natures,

  127. don't we?

  128. Our selfish pride

  129. that wants to be made up of,

  130. made much of.

  131. Our sinful desires

  132. that want to gratify ourselves

  133. rather than glorify God.

  134. Our self-justifying spirits

  135. that would rather fester over a wrong

  136. than overlook an offense.

  137. Oftentimes the enemy

  138. is ourselves, isn't it?

  139. But if that's not opposition enough

  140. from the world

  141. and from our own sinful natures,

  142. there's also the one

  143. that Jesus calls the accuser.

  144. A spiritual enemy

  145. whose main weapon

  146. is the lie.

  147. The lie that God

  148. is neither good enough

  149. nor powerful enough

  150. to make any difference.

  151. The lie that we don't need a Savior.

  152. The lie that even if there was a Savior,

  153. God couldn't possibly love someone like me

  154. and want to save me.

  155. And so it's easy,

  156. isn't it,

  157. to grow discouraged

  158. as a church

  159. when we see the magnitude

  160. of the task,

  161. when we see the opposition

  162. to the task.

  163. It's easy

  164. to get discouraged

  165. and it's easy

  166. to grow afraid.

  167. But what Nehemiah chapters 3 and 4

    Nehemiah 3 chapter mention

  168. show us is hope.

  169. God has made a way for us

  170. to meet

  171. both

  172. the magnitude of the task

  173. and the opposition

  174. to the task.

  175. We see the magnitude

  176. of the task

  177. being faced

  178. in chapter 3

  179. and the opposition

  180. in chapter 4.

  181. So first,

  182. let's think about

  183. the magnitude.

  184. In chapter 3,

  185. to sum it up,

  186. we see the magnitude

  187. of the church's task

  188. is no match

  189. for a ministry-minded

  190. membership.

  191. The magnitude

  192. of the church's task

  193. is no match

  194. for a ministry-minded

  195. membership.

  196. Now,

  197. at first glance,

  198. chapter 3,

  199. just looks like

  200. a long list

  201. of obscure names

  202. and places

  203. around Jerusalem,

  204. right?

  205. Look down there.

  206. You're like,

  207. man,

  208. I'm glad he's not

  209. going to read

  210. that whole chapter.

  211. And I'd be making up

  212. how to pronounce

  213. about half of those names.

  214. True confessions.

  215. But you know,

  216. actually,

  217. as we take a breath

  218. and glance over

  219. that chapter,

  220. what it is,

  221. it's actually

  222. a description

  223. of the work

  224. and the workers

  225. who took up

  226. the daunting task

  227. of rebuilding

  228. the walls.

  229. It's quite a heroic

  230. and courageous list.

  231. The description

  232. of the work

  233. begins

  234. in the north end

  235. of the city

  236. at what's called

  237. the Sheep Gate

  238. in verse 1.

  239. And then,

  240. we're going to move

  241. kind of counterclockwise

  242. around the city's perimeter,

  243. naming the various gates

  244. and landmarks

  245. along the way.

  246. And the gates

  247. of the city

  248. become the sort

  249. of major landmarks

  250. that divide up the work.

  251. From the Sheep Gate

  252. in verse 1,

  253. you see that there,

  254. we go west

  255. to the Fish Gate

  256. in verse 3,

  257. slightly south

  258. to the Gate of Yeshna

  259. in verse,

  260. is it verse 6?

  261. Then from there,

  262. we take a steep turn south

  263. down to the Valley Gate

  264. in 13

  265. until we reach

  266. the southernmost part

  267. of the city,

  268. what's called

  269. the Dung Gate

  270. in verse 14.

  271. Okay,

  272. you had to really feel

  273. for the guys

  274. who were building

  275. the Dung Gate,

  276. right?

  277. Not the most glamorous job,

  278. but there you go.

  279. They drew the short sticks.

  280. They had to build

  281. the Dung Gate.

  282. But anyway,

  283. keep going.

  284. From there,

  285. the wall shoots north again

  286. up to the Fountain Gate,

  287. the Water Gate,

  288. the Horse Gate

  289. in verse 28,

  290. the East Gate,

  291. the Mustard Gate

  292. until back to the

  293. northernmost part

  294. of the city

  295. where the work began

  296. at the Sheep Gate

  297. in verse 32,

  298. right near the temple

  299. in the northernmost part

  300. of the city,

  301. probably named

  302. the Sheep Gate

  303. because that's where

  304. the sacrifices

  305. were brought into the city

  306. for worship at the temple.

  307. And so we see

  308. that the people

  309. actually tackle

  310. the whole project

  311. at once,

  312. every member

  313. of the community

  314. finding their place,

  315. doing their part,

  316. joining in the great work.

  317. And the priests

  318. in verse 1,

  319. in verse 1,

  320. they consecrated,

  321. they set it apart,

  322. not just the Sheep Gate,

  323. but by relationship

  324. to the whole task,

  325. they consecrated,

  326. they set it apart

  327. as devoted to the Lord.

  328. Now it's hard not

  329. to think here

  330. as we see the community

  331. taking up this project

  332. together.

  333. It's hard not to think here

  334. of the description

  335. of the church

  336. in the New Testament,

  337. isn't it?

  338. Think of what Paul

  339. has to say

  340. in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  341. Speaking of the church,

  342. he says,

  343. and we heard this earlier,

  344. speaking the truth

  345. in love,

  346. we are to grow up

  347. in every way

  348. into Him

  349. who is the head

  350. into Christ,

  351. from whom the whole body

  352. joined and held together

  353. by every joint

  354. with which it is equipped.

  355. When each part

  356. is working properly,

  357. makes the body grow

  358. so that it builds

  359. itself up in love.

  360. When each part

  361. is working properly,

  362. the body grows,

  363. building itself up

  364. in love.

  365. You see,

  366. in the body of Christ,

  367. our membership

  368. means ministry,

  369. a call to serve

  370. and love

  371. and to find your place

  372. in this great work

  373. of building

  374. the spiritual city

  375. of God.

  376. Let me make

  377. a couple observations

  378. from Nehemiah chapter 3

    Nehemiah 3 chapter mention

  379. about this

  380. every member ministry.

  381. First,

  382. what we see here

  383. is that the workers

  384. on the wall

  385. come from all

  386. the social levels

  387. of the community.

  388. If you scan

  389. throughout this chapter,

  390. you'll come across

  391. priests,

  392. Levites,

  393. temple servants,

  394. civic rulers,

  395. craftsmen,

  396. merchants,

  397. men,

  398. and women.

  399. No one

  400. is excluded

  401. from the work.

  402. Everyone finds

  403. their place.

  404. Now,

  405. I think there's

  406. a two-fold lesson

  407. for us there.

  408. On the one hand,

  409. don't think

  410. that there's no place

  411. for you

  412. in the work

  413. of the church

  414. and the work

  415. of the kingdom.

  416. You may not think

  417. that you have much

  418. to contribute,

  419. but friend,

  420. Jesus made you

  421. a part of His body,

  422. a part of His city

  423. for a reason.

  424. There are no accidents.

  425. For the sake

  426. of the kingdom,

  427. you do have a role

  428. to play.

  429. In fact,

  430. you're a needed member.

  431. Remember what Paul says?

  432. Only when each part

  433. is working properly,

  434. each and every part,

  435. do we grow

  436. the way God intends.

  437. You have a place.

  438. We actually need you

  439. on the wall,

  440. as it were.

  441. On the other hand,

  442. if some people

  443. think they're no good

  444. to minister in the church,

  445. don't fall into

  446. the opposite trap

  447. of thinking you're too good.

  448. Notice verse 5.

  449. Look at the end

  450. of verse 5.

  451. And next to them,

  452. the Techoites repaired,

  453. but their nobles

  454. would not stoop

  455. to serve their Lord.

  456. The nobles of Techoa,

  457. a region I think

  458. south of Jerusalem,

  459. were a bit too proud

  460. to get their hands dirty

  461. and build a wall.

  462. Friend,

  463. don't let that be you.

  464. Consider rather

  465. the example

  466. of verse 9.

  467. Next to them,

  468. Rephiah,

  469. the son of Hur,

  470. ruler of half

  471. the district

  472. of Jerusalem repaired.

  473. Or verse 12.

  474. Next to him,

  475. Shalom,

  476. the son of Halahesh,

  477. ruler of half

  478. the district

  479. of Jerusalem repaired.

  480. He and his daughters.

  481. Who are these two men?

  482. They were basically

  483. what we might call mayors

  484. of half of the city

  485. and half of the surrounding district.

  486. But they didn't think

  487. that the work

  488. of rebuilding the wall

  489. was too mundane

  490. for them.

  491. No,

  492. it was an honor

  493. to serve God's kingdom

  494. in this way.

  495. It was a privilege to them.

  496. No matter how great

  497. their social standing

  498. in the world,

  499. they were willing

  500. to be servants

  501. in the church.

  502. another observation

  503. about every member

  504. ministry

  505. that we see here.

  506. Consider that many people

  507. built the wall

  508. even though it wasn't

  509. necessarily

  510. what we might call

  511. their gifting.

  512. In verse 8,

  513. who do we see there?

  514. There are goldsmiths

  515. and perfumers

  516. who are working

  517. on the construction project.

  518. In verse 32,

  519. there are merchants.

  520. In verse 26,

  521. there are temple servants.

  522. And not one of them

  523. seemingly said,

  524. sorry, Nehemiah,

  525. this isn't really

  526. my spiritual gift,

  527. you know.

  528. I took a spiritual gift survey

  529. when Ezra came into town.

  530. It showed that I was

  531. something very different,

  532. not bricklaying,

  533. not masonry,

  534. not carrying stuff.

  535. So I'm going to sit

  536. this one out.

  537. But hey,

  538. when we start

  539. the perfume ministry,

  540. let me know.

  541. I'm on it.

  542. I'm in there.

  543. In the meantime,

  544. I'm going to sit

  545. this one out.

  546. Now,

  547. of course,

  548. it is okay

  549. to want to serve

  550. out of your strengths,

  551. right?

  552. That's a good principle.

  553. But friends,

  554. if a perfumer

  555. can lay bricks,

  556. how much more

  557. can you and I

  558. take up a ministry

  559. that might not necessarily

  560. be a perfect match

  561. for our skills

  562. for the sake

  563. of loving Christ's church.

  564. If the real need

  565. is there,

  566. ministry-mindedness

  567. means that we gladly

  568. engage in the task

  569. wholeheartedly.

  570. We take up our place

  571. on the wall

  572. for the good of the whole

  573. and count it a privilege

  574. to be a part

  575. of beautifying God's city

  576. and restoring its dignity.

  577. And so what's the result

  578. of this every-member ministry?

  579. Jump down

  580. into chapter 4,

  581. verse 6.

  582. Look at chapter 4,

  583. verse 6.

  584. It says,

  585. And so we built the wall,

  586. and all the wall

  587. was joined together

  588. to half its height,

  589. for the people

  590. had a mind to work.

  591. Isn't that awesome?

  592. When everyone

  593. joined the work,

  594. the wall came together,

  595. and pretty soon

  596. they were halfway done.

  597. They started to actually

  598. turn the corner.

  599. This impossible task

  600. suddenly looked

  601. pretty possible.

  602. So let me make

  603. a very simple application

  604. to our life here at Trinity.

  605. And this is going to feel

  606. really mundane, I know,

  607. but let's just go there.

  608. If every member

  609. of our church

  610. served on a ministry team

  611. on Sunday

  612. just once or twice a month,

  613. friends,

  614. we'd almost never have to ask

  615. for volunteers.

  616. If every member

  617. served in some ministry

  618. just once or twice a month,

  619. we'd have more than enough

  620. to do the work before us

  621. and more.

  622. Now,

  623. I know we don't do

  624. a lot of volunteer

  625. asking at Trinity,

  626. but imagine that.

  627. Think of how much

  628. encouraging,

  629. life-giving energy

  630. would be released

  631. in our midst

  632. if we loved one another

  633. in just that simple way

  634. to serve in some ministry

  635. just once or twice

  636. a month around here.

  637. And as our church grows,

  638. imagine how we'd be able

  639. to welcome more people,

  640. serve more newcomers,

  641. allow our body

  642. to grow

  643. into the full measure

  644. of the stature

  645. of Christ,

  646. as Paul says.

  647. So where's your place

  648. on the wall?

  649. Do you have one?

  650. If you don't know

  651. where you should join in,

  652. you can talk to me

  653. after the service.

  654. I can point you

  655. in the right direction.

  656. Or you can email

  657. the church office

  658. through the website.

  659. The staff would be

  660. more than happy

  661. to connect you

  662. with the ministry.

  663. You can talk to someone

  664. who's doing something

  665. around here

  666. that looks like

  667. you might be interested in.

  668. Do that

  669. so you can take

  670. an active part

  671. in the good work

  672. that's going on

  673. around here.

  674. But let me apply

  675. this principle

  676. to our evangelistic task

  677. as well,

  678. our call

  679. to make disciples

  680. and be salt and light

  681. in the world.

  682. You know,

  683. providentially,

  684. providentially,

  685. God has placed

  686. each one of us

  687. in our particular context

  688. in our city,

  689. in our communities.

  690. Whether it's your job

  691. or your neighborhood

  692. or your campus

  693. or your kayaking club,

  694. whatever,

  695. when you look down

  696. through this list

  697. in chapter 3,

  698. a lot of people

  699. start rebuilding the wall

  700. right across the street

  701. from their house.

  702. It's no mistake

  703. that you are

  704. where you are.

  705. And in this list

  706. from Nehemiah,

  707. we see that people

  708. are taking up the work

  709. right before them.

  710. Look at verse 23.

  711. After them,

  712. Benjamin and Hashab

  713. repaired opposite

  714. their house.

  715. And after them,

  716. Azariah,

  717. the son of Maseah,

  718. son of Ananiah,

  719. repaired beside

  720. his own house.

  721. Where do you belong

  722. in the work

  723. of the kingdom?

  724. Right where you are.

  725. God's placed you there

  726. for a reason.

  727. If each of us

  728. viewed our lives this way

  729. and began praying,

  730. God, use me right here.

  731. Open my eyes

  732. to how you're going

  733. to use me

  734. in these relationships,

  735. in this workplace,

  736. on this street,

  737. in this neighborhood,

  738. in this residence hall,

  739. in this apartment building.

  740. Just imagine

  741. what could happen.

  742. Yes,

  743. the task

  744. would still be great,

  745. but it would not

  746. be impossible.

  747. The wall

  748. would start

  749. to come together.

  750. People will come

  751. to know Christ

  752. and the kingdom

  753. will advance.

  754. How can we be so sure?

  755. I'm speaking

  756. pretty confidently,

  757. aren't I?

  758. Friends,

  759. as we heard this morning

  760. in Sunday school,

  761. it's not because

  762. I have a lot of faith

  763. in humanity.

  764. It's because I have

  765. a lot of faith

  766. in the Lord.

  767. Isn't this the message

  768. of Christianity?

  769. That God loved

  770. the fallen world

  771. so much

  772. that he gave

  773. his only son

  774. to die on a cross

  775. for our sins,

  776. to rise again

  777. on the third day,

  778. to ascending glory

  779. to the Father,

  780. to pour out his Spirit

  781. so that he might draw

  782. men and women

  783. to himself

  784. from every tribe,

  785. every tongue,

  786. every culture,

  787. every city

  788. so that he might

  789. reconcile us

  790. to God

  791. and one another.

  792. Did Christ die

  793. on the cross?

  794. Did he rise again?

  795. If yes,

  796. then our mission

  797. cannot fail.

  798. And he's inviting

  799. all of us

  800. to join in the work,

  801. to take your place

  802. on the wall

  803. and see the city

  804. come alive again.

  805. But that doesn't mean

  806. it's going to be easy.

  807. The work gets off

  808. to an incredible start

  809. in chapter 3.

  810. The people say

  811. they're going to do it

  812. in chapter 2

  813. and then they do it

  814. in chapter 3.

  815. It's wonderful.

  816. But soon,

  817. opposition comes.

  818. Let's pick up the story

  819. in chapter 4, verse 1.

  820. Let me read chapter 4

  821. for us.

  822. Now, when Sanballat,

  823. he's one of the local

  824. non-Jewish officials

  825. sort of of the neighboring

  826. surrounding people.

  827. Now, when Sanballat heard

  828. that we were building

  829. the wall,

  830. he was angry

  831. and greatly enraged

  832. and he jeered

  833. at the Jews.

  834. And he said

  835. in the presence

  836. of his brothers

  837. and of the army

  838. of Samaria,

  839. Samaria is sort of

  840. the district just north

  841. of Judea and Jerusalem,

  842. what are these

  843. feeble Jews doing?

  844. Will they restore it

  845. for themselves?

  846. Will they sacrifice?

  847. Will they finish up

  848. in a day?

  849. Will they revive

  850. the stones

  851. out of the heaps

  852. of rubbish

  853. and burned ones

  854. at that?

  855. Tobiah the Ammonite

  856. was beside him

  857. and he said,

  858. yeah, what they're building,

  859. if a fox goes up on it,

  860. he'll break down

  861. their stone wall.

  862. And then Nehemiah prays,

  863. Hear, O God,

  864. for we are despised.

  865. Turn back their taunt

  866. on their own heads

  867. and give them up

  868. to be blundered

  869. in a land

  870. where they're captives.

  871. Do not cover their guilt

  872. and let not their sin

  873. be blotted out

  874. from your sight,

  875. for they've provoked you

  876. to anger

  877. in the presence

  878. of the builders.

  879. So we built the wall

  880. and all the wall

  881. was joined together

  882. to half its height

  883. for the people

  884. had a mind to work.

  885. But when Sanballat

  886. and Tobiah

  887. and the Arabs

  888. and the Ammonites

  889. and the Ashdodites

  890. heard that the repairing

  891. of the walls of Jerusalem

  892. was going forward

  893. and that the breaches

  894. were beginning to be closed,

  895. they were very angry.

  896. And they plotted,

  897. they all plotted together

  898. to come and fight

  899. against Jerusalem

  900. and to cause confusion in it.

  901. And we prayed to our God

  902. and said a guard

  903. is a protection

  904. against them day and night.

  905. In Judah,

  906. it was said,

  907. the strength of those

  908. who bear the burdens

  909. is failing.

  910. There's too much rubble.

  911. By ourselves,

  912. we will not be able

  913. to rebuild the wall.

  914. And our enemies said,

  915. they will not know

  916. or see

  917. till we come among them

  918. and kill them

  919. and stop the work.

  920. At that time,

  921. the Jews who lived near them

  922. from all directions

  923. came and said to us

  924. ten times,

  925. you must return to us.

  926. So,

  927. in the lowest parts

  928. of the space

  929. behind the wall

  930. and open places,

  931. I stationed the people

  932. by their clans

  933. with their swords,

  934. their spears,

  935. and their bows.

  936. And I looked

  937. and arose

  938. and said to the nobles

  939. and to the officials

  940. and to the rest of the people,

  941. do not be afraid of them.

  942. Remember the Lord

  943. who is great

  944. and awesome

  945. and fight for your brothers,

  946. your sons,

  947. your daughters,

  948. your wives,

  949. and your homes.

  950. When our enemies heard

  951. that it was known to us

  952. and that God

  953. had frustrated their plan,

  954. we all returned to the wall,

  955. each to his work.

  956. From that day on,

  957. half of my servants

  958. worked on construction

  959. and half held the spears,

  960. shields, bows,

  961. and coats of mail.

  962. And the leaders stood

  963. behind the whole house of Judah

  964. who were building the wall.

  965. Those who carried burdens

  966. were loaded in such a way

  967. that each labored

  968. on the work with one hand

  969. and held his weapon

  970. with the other.

  971. And each of the builders

  972. had his sword

  973. strapped at his side

  974. while he built.

  975. The man who sounded

  976. the trumpet

  977. was beside me

  978. and I said to the nobles

  979. and to the officials

  980. and to the rest of the people,

  981. the work is great

  982. and widely spread

  983. and we are separated

  984. on the wall

  985. far from one another.

  986. In the place

  987. where you hear

  988. the sound of the trumpet,

  989. rally to us there,

  990. our God will fight for us.

  991. So we labored at the work

  992. and half of them

  993. held the spears.

  994. From the break of dawn

  995. until the stars came out.

  996. I also said to the people

  997. at that time,

  998. let every man and his servant

  999. pass the night

  1000. within Jerusalem

1001. that they may be a guard

  1002. for us by night

1003. and may labor by day.

  1004. So neither I

  1005. nor my brothers

  1006. nor my servants

1007. nor the men of the guard

  1008. who followed me,

1009. none of us took off our clothes,

  1010. each kept his weapon

  1011. at his right hand.

1012. So what do we see?

1013. By the end of chapter 4,

  1014. this construction site

  1015. around Jerusalem

1016. has turned into a battleground.

  1017. Brothers and sisters,

  1018. let us not think

  1019. that the task

  1020. of building the church,

1021. of seeing God's kingdom advance,

1022. will happen without a fight.

  1023. In this chapter,

  1024. notice how the taunts

  1025. of verses 1 and 3

  1026. become threats

  1027. in verses 7 and 8.

  1028. As the work progresses,

  1029. the opposition

1030. doesn't get less and less,

1031. it gets more and more.

1032. The higher the wall becomes,

1033. the fiercer the opposition grows.

  1034. In verse 7,

  1035. in verse 7,

1036. the city is now actually

  1037. sort of surrounded

  1038. with enemies.

  1039. Sanballat from Samaria

  1040. in the north,

  1041. Arabs in the south,

  1042. Ammonites in the east,

1043. the Ashdodites in the west,

  1044. they are literally surrounded

  1045. by their opponents.

1046. And the people get discouraged

  1047. in verse 10.

  1048. Seeing the opposition

  1049. growing,

  1050. their work songs

  1051. actually turn into

1052. sort of songs of despair.

1053. What they say in verse 10

  1054. actually sort of has

1055. a kind of meter to it

  1056. in the Hebrew.

  1057. One translator rendered

  1058. verse 10 this way,

  1059. the builders are pooped,

  1060. the rubbish piles up,

1061. we're in over our heads,

1062. we can't build this wall.

1063. And yet by the end

  1064. of the chapter,

  1065. the discouragement

1066. and fear of verse 10

  1067. has given way

  1068. to renewed energy

  1069. and courage to work

  1070. in verse 21,

1071. from the break of dawn

1072. until the stars come out.

  1073. So what happened?

  1074. What changed?

  1075. Well, what we see

  1076. in Nehemiah 4

  1077. is that the opposition

  1078. to the task

  1079. is no match

  1080. for a great

  1081. and awesome God.

  1082. The opposition

  1083. to our task

  1084. is no match

  1085. for a great

  1086. and awesome God.

  1087. Verse 14

  1088. is the turning point.

  1089. Nehemiah says,

  1090. do not be afraid

  1091. of them.

  1092. Remember the Lord

  1093. who is great

  1094. and awesome

  1095. and fight.

  1096. Now as Paul says

  1097. in Ephesians 6,

  1098. today the church

  1099. is not waging war

  1100. against flesh and blood.

  1101. This is now

  1102. a spiritual battle

  1103. we are in.

1104. The people of Nehemiah's day

  1105. had one hand

  1106. on the work

  1107. and one hand

  1108. on the weapon,

  1109. the sword

  1110. and the trowel

  1111. as Charles Spurgeon

  1112. so famously put it.

  1113. But the armor

1114. that we take up today

  1115. is not the literal

  1116. steel of a sword.

  1117. No, today we actually

1118. reject that kind of violence

1119. for the way of the cross.

  1120. Rather today

  1121. what we take up

  1122. is the spiritual armor

  1123. of God,

1124. the sword of the spirit

  1125. to fight discouragement,

  1126. to withstand

  1127. even physical threats,

  1128. to overcome our fears.

  1129. Paul says

1130. it's the belt of truth

  1131. that we fasten on

  1132. when the lies

  1133. come streaming in.

  1134. and it's a breastplate

  1135. of righteousness

  1136. that we put on

  1137. when the accuser says

  1138. we're not worthy

  1139. of God's acceptance

  1140. in God's people.

  1141. And it's the gospel

  1142. of peace

  1143. that becomes shoes

  1144. for our feet

  1145. when our doubts

1146. begin to trip us up.

  1147. And it's the shield

  1148. of faith

  1149. and it's a helmet

  1150. of salvation

  1151. that allows us

  1152. to withstand,

  1153. yes,

  1154. even threats of violence

1155. that may come our way.

  1156. And it's the word

  1157. of God

  1158. that is the sword,

1159. the sword of the spirit.

  1160. That word,

  1161. as Hebrew says,

  1162. that is sharper

  1163. than any two-edged sword,

  1164. piercing to the division

  1165. of soul and spirit,

  1166. discerning the thoughts

1167. and intentions of the heart,

  1168. engaging even our enemies

  1169. with the grace

  1170. of the gospel.

1171. Now, I know this battle,

  1172. this warfare language

  1173. can sometimes make us

  1174. uncomfortable.

  1175. I get it.

  1176. But friends,

1177. we are in a spiritual fight.

  1178. The church

  1179. is a liberation movement

  1180. behind our great

  1181. liberator, Jesus.

1182. And he has stationed us

  1183. behind enemy lines

1184. to get about the work

  1185. of setting captives free.

  1186. Free from sin

  1187. and guilt

  1188. and shame

  1189. and condemnation

  1190. and dread

  1191. and addiction

  1192. and self-pity

  1193. and pride

  1194. and fear.

  1195. But these enemies

  1196. don't go down

  1197. without a fight, friends.

1198. The work of the kingdom

  1199. means one hand

  1200. on the shovel

  1201. and one hand

  1202. on the sword.

  1203. Are you taking up

  1204. the resources

  1205. for this fight

1206. in the word of God

  1207. and in the gospel?

  1208. But notice,

  1209. Nehemiah doesn't just

1210. tell the people to fight.

  1211. They have their responsibility

  1212. to take up

  1213. their defenses, yes.

  1214. But underneath

  1215. and around

  1216. and over

  1217. their human responsibility

  1218. to fight

  1219. is the sovereignty

  1220. of God

  1221. who fights for us.

  1222. Remember the Lord

  1223. who is great

  1224. and awesome.

  1225. At the head

  1226. of the church

  1227. then

  1228. and now

  1229. is a great

  1230. and awesome God.

  1231. But friends,

  1232. don't you see

  1233. how God

  1234. has revealed himself

  1235. even further

  1236. in the gospel?

  1237. that we have

  1238. a captain

  1239. who took the field

  1240. on our behalf

  1241. and who strode

  1242. into battle

  1243. against our greatest foe

  1244. sin and death

  1245. and hell

  1246. and who triumphed

  1247. not with the sword

  1248. but with a cross

  1249. by laying down

  1250. his own life

1251. so that you and I

  1252. might live.

  1253. Do you remember

  1254. when Jesus

  1255. was in the Garden

  1256. of Gethsemane

  1257. praying

  1258. and the soldiers

  1259. came for him

  1260. and for his disciples

  1261. and he said,

  1262. who are you seeking?

  1263. And they said,

  1264. Jesus of Nazareth

1265. and what did Jesus do?

  1266. Did he shrink back?

  1267. Did he sort of

  1268. lose himself

  1269. in the crowd

  1270. of disciples?

  1271. No,

  1272. just the opposite.

  1273. He steps forward

  1274. to meet them

  1275. putting himself

  1276. in between

  1277. their enemies

  1278. and his people

  1279. and says,

  1280. I'm the one

  1281. you're looking for.

  1282. Let them go free.

  1283. Don't you see,

  1284. friends,

  1285. in our place

  1286. Jesus meets

  1287. his accusers

  1288. and ours

1289. so that we can go free.

  1290. In our place

  1291. Jesus bears

  1292. our sin

  1293. and guilt

  1294. so that we

  1295. can go free.

  1296. That's how

  1297. the battle's

  1298. been won.

  1299. So that whatever

  1300. the world throws

  1301. at us,

  1302. so whatever

  1303. the evil one

  1304. threatens us with,

  1305. they're no match

  1306. for our great

  1307. and awesome God,

  1308. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1309. Friends,

  1310. have you come

  1311. to trust

  1312. in this

  1313. captain

  1314. of souls,

  1315. this loving

  1316. Lord

  1317. who will always

  1318. protect you

  1319. and never

  1320. lead you astray?

  1321. If so,

  1322. then do not fear.

  1323. Do not fear

  1324. the magnitude

  1325. of our task.

  1326. It is great,

  1327. but he's made us

  1328. one body

  1329. in himself,

  1330. every member

  1331. a minister

  1332. to complete

  1333. the work before us

  1334. and do not fear

  1335. the opposition

  1336. to the task.

  1337. It will be fierce

  1338. at times.

  1339. Do not be surprised.

  1340. It may grow

  1341. as the work continues,

  1342. but remember the Lord

  1343. who is great

  1344. and awesome.

  1345. He has already

  1346. won the battle

  1347. and we can stand

  1348. strong in the Lord

  1349. Jesus and in the

  1350. strength of his might

  1351. to withstand

  1352. whatever may come.

  1353. It may seem

  1354. like an impossible

  1355. task before us,

  1356. church,

  1357. but what is impossible

  1358. for us

  1359. is much more

  1360. than possible

  1361. with God.

  1362. And so,

  1363. brothers and sisters,

1364. to him who is able

  1365. to do far more

  1366. abundantly

  1367. than all we ask

  1368. or think

  1369. according to the power

  1370. at work within us,

  1371. to him be glory

  1372. in the church

  1373. and in Jesus Christ

  1374. throughout all generations

  1375. forever and ever.

  1376. Amen.

  1377. Let's pray.

  1378. Amen.

  1379. Father, we pray

  1380. that you would send

  1381. out your spirit

  1382. upon us now.

  1383. Cause the seed

  1384. of your word

  1385. to take deep root

  1386. in the soil

  1387. of our hearts.

  1388. God, we know

  1389. that as soon as

  1390. we step out

  1391. those doors,

  1392. there's going

  1393. to be birds

  1394. that want to

  1395. snatch this seed away.

  1396. There are going

  1397. to be cares

  1398. and concerns

  1399. that want to

  1400. choke it out.

  1401. There's going

  1402. to be rocky soil

  1403. that wants it

  1404. to just stay shallow,

  1405. but God,

  1406. would you do

  1407. a sovereign work

  1408. and bury this word

  1409. deep in our hearts

  1410. and change us

  1411. from the inside out.

  1412. Clothe us

  1413. with your gospel,

  1414. we pray,

  1415. Lord Jesus,

  1416. as we go out

  1417. into the world today.

  1418. Lord,

  1419. help us not

  1420. to fear

  1421. or grow discouraged

  1422. when the task

  1423. seems big

  1424. and the opposition

  1425. seems great.

  1426. Help us

  1427. to keep our eyes

  1428. on you,

  1429. Lord Jesus,

  1430. the captain

  1431. of our souls.

1432. You will hold us fast.

  1433. You will allow us

  1434. to rise up

  1435. and do the work

  1436. that you've called

  1437. us to do.

  1438. Oh God,

  1439. help us

  1440. to keep in step

  1441. with your spirit

  1442. as we do so.

  1443. In Jesus' name

  1444. we pray,

  1445. Father.

  1446. Amen.

  1447. Well,

  1448. friends,

  1449. in response,

  1450. let's stand

  1451. and we're going

  1452. to sing a song,

  1453. Oh Church Arise,

  1454. which is about

  1455. taking up the armor

  1456. of God

  1457. for this spiritual

  1458. calling that he's

1459. given us as a church.

  1460. So let's sing

  1461. this song together.

  1462. Amen.
