  1. Well, good morning.

  2. Since it's July and we are having a family service, I want to make sure I point out if

  3. you have children who are unused to being in the service, there's a table with some

  4. goodies in the back, and as the temperature gets warmer, just to remind you that there's

  5. water in the back, there's a water fountain in the back, and there is seating downstairs,

  6. which is a little cooler if you're finding it uncomfortable enough that it's hard to

  7. continue to be a part of the service.

  8. So, all those resources are here, hopefully, to help you continue to be able to worship

  9. the Lord together with us this morning.

  10. In the movie, All the President's Men, the book about the Nixon-Watergate scandal, based

  11. on a book by journalists Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, there is a famous scene where

  12. these two journalists investigating the corruption in the White House meet with their informant

  13. deep throat.

  14. And the movie, he says, follow the money.

  15. Follow the money because it would show where the power lay.

  16. Follow the money because it would lead them to who was responsible.

  17. Follow the money because it would reveal the depths of the heart of those in power.

  18. For those of you who are under 35, you've got to go out and rent it.

  19. It would probably need to go to the coffee shop in Hamden because they probably don't

  20. have it on Netflix.

  21. It's a great movie.

  22. It's wonderful.

  23. But follow the money because it reveals the heart of the leaders.

  24. As we look at money this morning and how wealth is used, it occurs to me that in our culture,

  25. money is a taboo subject almost like no other in our culture.

  26. We don't like to talk about it, even more so than what happens in the bedroom.

  27. Don't ask me about my budget is a typical thing that is true of us.

  28. And even more so, don't you dare tell me what I should do with my money.

  29. But oddly enough, when we look at the Bible, we recognize that it actually has a lot of

  30. things to say about money.

  31. One count had over 2,000 different verses in the Bible that dealt with money and wealth.

  32. One other account figured that one-tenth of the Gospels Jesus teaching was about money

  33. and the use of money in our lives.

  34. Why does God care so much about it?

  35. Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount says this,

  36. For where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.

  37. Follow the money because it reveals your heart's treasure.

  38. And whether we have a little or whether we have a lot,

  39. what we do with our money is a key area where we show

  40. the degree to which we know and fear God or not.

  41. And that's what our passage this morning leads us to.

  42. We're looking in Nehemiah chapter 5 in your pew Bibles.

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  43. It's page 372.

  44. So if you want to follow along in there, you can.

  45. The book of Nehemiah chapter 5.

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  46. And just in case you're visiting or if you haven't been here for a couple weeks

  47. because you've been on vacation,

  48. remember we're looking at the story of Ezra and Nehemiah,

  49. how God was bringing his people back from exile to the promised land to rebuild them.

  50. To rebuild the temple where they could worship him as he described and prescribed.

  51. To rebuild the people that they would know him and follow him

  52. in the distinct ways that he has called them to follow him.

  53. And to rebuild the city of Jerusalem.

  54. This place where God in that season in redemptive history said,

  55. this is a place where I will dwell on my people

  56. and my light will shine to all the nations of the world from this place.

  57. And what we've seen in the early part of Nehemiah,

  58. it actually has this very cool structure in verses,

  59. in chapters 3 through 7,

  60. where chapters 1 and 2 set up the problem.

  61. And then 3 through 7 you have this beginning of the work of building the wall in chapter 3.

  62. Chapter 4 talks about opposition to the building of the wall and how they overcome it.

  63. And then chapter 6 talks about opposition again to the building it.

  64. And in the end of chapter 6 you see the finishing of the building of the wall.

  65. And right in the middle is chapter 5.

    Isaiah 5 chapter mention

  66. Where as God is helping the people do these external things,

  67. he also wants to continue to build their hearts.

  68. Their hearts to love him and fear him above all things.

  69. And it is in fact in the middle of the work of building the wall

  70. that a crisis occurs that reveals these things and brings it to light.

  71. And that leads us to our passage this morning.

  72. Nehemiah chapter 5.

    Nehemiah 5 chapter mention

  73. We're going to read this together.

  74. So please read along with me.

  75. Now there arose a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their Jewish brothers.

  76. For there were those who said,

  77. With our sons and daughters we are many.

  78. So let us get grain that we may eat and keep alive.

  79. And there were those who said,

  80. We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses to get grain because of the famine.

  81. And there were those who said,

  82. We have borrowed money for the king's tax on our fields and our vineyards.

  83. Now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers.

  84. Our children are as their children.

  85. Yet we are forcing our sons and daughters to be slaves.

  86. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved.

  87. But it is not in our power to help it.

  88. For other men have our fields and our vineyards.

  89. I was very angry when I heard their outcry in these words.

  90. I took counsel with myself.

  91. And I brought charges against the nobles and the officials.

  92. I said to them,

  93. You are exacting interest, each from his brother.

  94. And I held a great assembly against them and said to them,

  95. We, as far as we are able, have brought back our Jewish brothers who have been sold to the nations.

  96. But you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us.

  97. And they were silent and could not find a word to say.

  98. And so I said,

  99. The thing that you are doing is not good.

  100. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God to prevent the taunts of the nations, our enemies?

  101. Moreover, I and my brothers and my servants are lending them money and grain.

  102. Let us abandon this exacting of interest.

  103. Return to them this very day.

  104. Their fields, their vineyards, and their olive orchards, and their houses,

  105. and the percentage of money, grain, wine, and oil that you have been exacting from them.

  106. Then they said,

  107. We will restore these and require nothing from them.

  108. We will do as you say.

  109. And so I called the priests and I made them swear to do as they had promised.

  110. I also shook out the fold of my garment and said,

  111. So may God shake out every man from his house and from his labor who does not keep this promise.

  112. So may he be shaken out and emptied.

  113. And all the assembly said,

  114. Amen!

  115. And praised the Lord and the people did as they had promised.

  116. Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah,

  117. from the 20th year to the 32nd year of Artaxerxes the king, 12 years,

  118. neither I nor my brothers ate the food allowance of the governor.

  119. The former governors who were before me laid heavy burdens on the people

  120. and took from them for their daily ration 40 shekels of silver.

  121. Even their servants lorded it over the people.

  122. But I did not do so because of the fear of God.

  123. I also persevered in the work on this wall.

  124. And we acquired no land and all my servants were gathered there for the work.

  125. Moreover, there were at my table 150 men, Jews and officials,

  126. besides those who came to us from the nations that were around us.

  127. Now what was prepared at my expense for each day

  128. was one ox and six choice sheep and birds

  129. and every 10 days all kinds of wine in abundance.

  130. Yet for all this I did not demand a food allowance of the governor

  131. because the service was too heavy on this people.

  132. Remember for my good, oh my God, all that I have done for this people.

  133. As we look at this, will you pray with me?

  134. Lord, we thank you for this word.

  135. We thank you for the way that it pierces to the depth of our heart,

  136. the way that it confronts and challenges us,

  137. the way that it shows us, Lord, what it means to be your people

  138. and to follow you.

  139. God, I pray this morning by your spirit that you would help us,

  140. Lord, to see our own hearts more clearly.

  141. Lord, that you would confront and change places

  142. in our hearts that need to be changed.

  143. And Lord, that we would be a people who fear you

  144. and in fearing you live a life that brings glory and honor to you

  145. in all that we do.

  146. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  147. Amen.

  148. Amen.

  149. So as we look at this passage this morning,

  150. I think the central idea is this,

  151. that God's people show that they fear God

  152. by how they use their wealth.

  153. God is building his people,

  154. restoring them to the promised land,

  155. having redeemed them from the slavery of exile

  156. and restoring them to the land of promise.

  157. And in the middle of this, he calls them to use their wealth

  158. to help God's people because they fear God.

  159. We see two things.

  160. We see that God shows us how to fear him

  161. by confronting our selfish use of wealth.

  162. And God shows us how to fear him with an example

  163. of sacrificial and costly use of wealth.

  164. So this is what we're going to look at this morning,

  165. a confrontation and an example to help us understand

  166. what it means to fear God in the way that we use our wealth.

  167. So first, God shows us how to fear him

  168. by confronting our selfish use of wealth.

  169. As we look at verses 1 through 13,

  170. the core verses, the core confrontation happens

  171. in verses 7 through 9.

  172. Verse 6 says that he was angry when he heard this

  173. and he comes to the people and he says,

  174. how could you be doing this?

  175. Specifically, how could you be doing this

  176. to your fellow Jewish people?

  177. How could you be exacting interest,

  178. taking advantage of the poor among you

  179. who don't have the resources to manage the famine

  180. that seemed to be the context of this,

  181. who don't have the resources to continue

  182. to manage their own fields while they're working the fields?

  183. How could you come and take advantage of them?

  184. This is what verses 1 through 5 show.

  185. The people cry out because they're being taken advantage of.

  186. We have big families and we don't have enough food.

  187. And because we don't have enough food,

  188. we're having to mortgage our long-term resources.

  189. And because we're mortgaging our long-term resources,

  190. we're in a much more dire state of need

  191. such that when we still need more,

  192. we're having to give our children

  193. as debt slaves to others

  194. within the community of God's people

  195. so that we have food to feed them.

  196. It's not hard to see some cycles of oppression

  197. and the ways that poverty can circle

  198. and become a greater and greater burden

  199. and how those with wealth can impose

  200. greater and greater cost

  201. in ways that crush people and destroy their lives.

  202. Nehemiah comes and he says,

  203. this is not good.

  204. And in verse 9, the core of the confrontation,

  205. ought you not rather to fear God?

  206. Why does Nehemiah talk about fearing God here?

  207. You might need to step back for a minute

  208. and think about what does it mean to fear God?

  209. Martin Luther famously made a distinction

  210. between two different kinds of fearing God.

  211. One is a servile fear of God.

  212. That is, a cowering, scared response

  213. to a cruel or an evil taskmaster.

  214. He said that's one kind of fear that we might have

  215. and we might think of as what it means to fear God.

  216. But Martin Luther said rather biblically,

  217. fearing God is more of what he called a filial fear.

  218. It is the fear of a child

  219. not wanting to displease or disappoint

  220. or to cross their parents.

  221. It is a recognition we are under an authority,

  222. we are accountable for our lives to someone else,

  223. but that someone else is benevolent and loving

  224. and their instruction and even their correction

  225. is good for us.

  226. And we fear them not in a cowering sense,

  227. but in a sense of recognizing with awe and reverence

  228. the role that they're meant to have in our lives

  229. and to respond to them by saying,

  230. all of our lives is accountable to you

  231. and I choose and desire to do everything to please you.

  232. In the context of this love relationship,

  233. we are to fear God.

  234. This is what Nehemiah means by it.

  235. Ought you not to fear God?

  236. What you are doing with your stuff,

  237. what you are doing with your wealth and power,

  238. you who have the ability to take advantage of those,

  239. you who are able to give out the loans,

  240. you who are the ones who are able to give grain

  241. in exchange for the deeds,

  242. you who are able to give help

  243. in exchange for the debt slavery

  244. of the children of Israel.

  245. Ought you not to fear God

  246. in how you are managing your wealth?

  247. And notice that Nehemiah,

  248. he does not pull his punches.

  249. He said, I was angry,

  250. I thought about it for a little while

  251. and then I let him have it

  252. and I didn't do this in private.

  253. Or maybe he did and they didn't respond.

  254. It's not clear, that's a possibility.

  255. But he went public with it.

  256. He called an assembly of the people of God

  257. and said, you rich people

  258. are oppressing the poor among us.

  259. This is not right.

  260. And not only is it not right

  261. because you are hurting your brothers,

  262. but it is not right

  263. because you are opening up God's people

  264. to the taunts of the nations around.

  265. Do you remember back in Ezra

  266. where Ezra didn't want to ask the king for a guard

  267. because he had said,

  268. our God is able to protect us.

  269. Here what we have is Nehemiah saying,

  270. we have said our God is able to provide for us.

  271. Our God is able to rebuild this nation

  272. and to rebuild this people.

  273. And now you are destroying that in selfishness.

  274. And in doing that,

  275. the name of God is being tarnished in the world.

  276. You who are meant to display the glory of God,

  277. the abundance of God's goodness

  278. and his generosity and his favor and his grace

  279. are showing instead selfishness

  280. in a profound way.

  281. And beautifully in the story,

  282. the people respond.

  283. Nehemiah says,

  284. this is what you must do.

  285. You must make this right.

  286. Give them back their lands.

  287. Give them back their things.

  288. Give them back the interest you have charged.

  289. One would assume,

  290. although it's not in the text,

  291. give them back their children.

  292. Make it right.

  293. Undo it all.

  294. And the people do respond.

  295. And maybe it's because

  296. they were not principally committed

  297. to this being the right way to do it.

  298. Maybe because they weren't hard-heartedly saying,

  299. let's wring every ounce of mammon

  300. that we can out of our fellow Jews.

  301. Maybe they were just going with the flow.

  302. Maybe they were just living within the culture

  303. and the society that they lived in.

  304. This is what you do.

  305. Someone comes and asks you for something.

  306. You give them help,

  307. but you make your peace out of it.

  308. Maybe that's true.

  309. That's a conjecture.

  310. Maybe it's being too kind to them.

  311. But maybe they were just swimming in the tide

  312. of the culture that they knew.

  313. And therefore,

  314. when God's clear path of righteousness

  315. was laid forth,

  316. when God's clear path

  317. of how to use wealth and power,

  318. not selfishly,

  319. but to bless God's people,

  320. they responded and said,

  321. yes, we will do that.

  322. And they did.

  323. Nehemiah held them to it,

  324. made the priests take an oath,

  325. to make sure that they would follow through.

  326. He called down a curse on them.

  327. He shook his garments and said,

  328. may God shake you out.

  329. May you end up with nothing

  330. if you don't follow through.

  331. But they did.

  332. And it's a beautiful picture.

  333. And again,

  334. we noticed this earlier.

  335. One of the interesting things

  336. in Ezra and Nehemiah

  337. is that compared to much

  338. of the Old Testament,

  339. when God's people are confronted,

  340. they tend to be stiff-necked

  341. and hard-hearted.

  342. And yet,

  343. in this story of Ezra and Nehemiah,

  344. we see glimpses of God's grace

  345. and his people responding

  346. with a humble heart

  347. and a teachable spirit.

  348. And they actually do what is right

  349. and turn away from their sin.

  350. So what about us?

  351. What does this first part

  352. of the chapter 5 of Nehemiah teach us?

  353. It seems at the heart of the matter

  354. is how do we use our wealth

  355. in ways that don't fear God.

  356. And we just need to be honest.

  357. It's very easy for us to be selfish.

  358. It's very easy for us

  359. to think,

  360. I got to keep getting more

  361. because you never know

  362. what's coming around the corner.

  363. It's up to me to take care of myself.

  364. It's very easy for us to think,

  365. I work hard.

  366. I deserve this.

  367. This is mine

  368. to do what I want with.

  369. Maybe we think

  370. with a sense of hyper-responsibility,

  371. I've got to take care of my own

  372. before I can help anyone else.

  373. But sometimes that's a mask

  374. for just our selfishness.

  375. I wonder too

  376. if in our modern society,

  377. in our culture today

  378. here in New Haven,

  379. that it's less

  380. I won't help people in need

  381. but more

  382. I'm too busy

  383. to even know

  384. that you have a need.

  385. I live such an isolated life

  386. that I'm not engaged

  387. in the people of God

  388. and the community of God

  389. enough to know

  390. where the needs are.

  391. I'm not coming alongside people

  392. and loving them

  393. and engaging

  394. in a way that I could know

  395. how I might be able to help.

  396. Maybe we swim in the cultural tide

  397. of I'd love to help

  398. but it's all tied up

  399. in investments.

  400. I need my ING number,

  401. my retirement number

  402. of seven or eight digits

  403. or whatever that silly ad

  404. shows us on TV.

  405. We don't think

  406. about

  407. how we might use it differently.

  408. We find money

  409. to be a place

  410. of security

  411. and safety for us.

  412. And often we fall

  413. into pride

  414. about what we've earned,

  415. what we've accomplished

  416. and the life

  417. that we've built.

  418. And we don't want that

  419. to be put into jeopardy

  420. or at risk.

  421. And in all of this,

  422. what it shows

  423. is a heart

  424. that does not fear God.

  425. We don't recognize

  426. that everything we have

  427. comes from God.

  428. We don't recognize

  429. and live

  430. out of a heart of

  431. God, everything I have

  432. is yours.

  433. How do I use it

  434. to please you?

  435. It's a pattern

  436. that says

  437. I've got to take care

  438. of my own.

  439. I can't think about others

  440. and their needs.

  441. Sometimes it's

  442. I don't want to look

  443. like a fool.

  444. My friends

  445. who invest wisely,

  446. the parents

  447. who I know

  448. who spend the money

  449. on their kids,

  450. I don't want to look

  451. like a fool

  452. to feel like

  453. I'm depriving

  454. my kids

  455. by being generous

  456. even at a cost.

  457. In all these ways,

  458. we fear other things

  459. more than we fear God.

  460. But what would it look like

  461. if we did fear God

  462. in the use of our money

  463. and wealth?

  464. Well, firstly,

  465. we cannot say to God,

  466. get your hands off my money.

  467. Don't tell me

  468. what to do with it.

  469. First and foremost,

  470. it's just saying

  471. we cannot say those things

  472. if we fear God.

  473. Instead,

  474. we begin to ask

  475. our question,

  476. God,

  477. from all that you have given me,

  478. whether a little or a lot,

  479. how can I use that

  480. to bless others

  481. and to show others

  482. the abundant grace

  483. of God?

  484. Not how much

  485. can I spend

  486. or even how much

  487. can I save,

  488. but how much

  489. can I give?

  490. How can I

  491. be a place

  492. where the abundance

  493. of God

  494. that has come to me

  495. overflows

  496. to the abundance

  497. of God

  498. being experienced

  499. by those

  500. around us?

  501. You know,

  502. it's remarkable

  503. in that passage

  504. we read earlier

  505. that Elizabeth read

  506. from 2 Corinthians,

  507. the Macedonian church

  508. begged earnestly

  509. for the favor

  510. of taking part

  511. in the relief

  512. of the saints,

  513. giving not only

  514. what they could

  515. but beyond

  516. what they could

  517. because they so

  518. wanted to be a part

  519. of what God

  520. was doing

  521. and they so

  522. wanted to love

  523. God's people

  524. and they so

  525. wanted to fear

  526. God

  527. and honor Him

  528. with what they did

  529. that they sought out

  530. and begged

  531. for the opportunity

  532. to do this.

  533. and they did this

  534. because they had

  535. experienced

  536. the abundance

  537. of God's goodness

  538. and provision

  539. to them

  540. because when we know

  541. that all that we have

  542. has come from God

  543. then it frees us

  544. to count all things

  545. as lost

  546. for the sake

  547. of knowing Him

  548. and serving Him.

  549. It means we don't

  550. have to live our lives

  551. grasping for those things

  552. but we can freely trust

  553. that He will give

  554. and in response

  555. we can be generous

  556. people to others.

  557. I'm not going to give you

  558. prescriptions

  559. on what this looks like.

  560. There aren't numbers

  561. amounts

  562. even contexts

  563. because I think

  564. that it's the heart

  565. of the matter.

  566. And friends

  567. if the church

  568. really lived

  569. with this kind

  570. of generous spirit

  571. if we as individuals

  572. and we as a body

  573. lived with this kind

  574. of overflowing

  575. giving heart

  576. would we not

  577. be distinct

  578. and would the world

  579. around us

  580. not stop

  581. and wonder

  582. how it is

  583. that that could

  584. truly be what we do

  585. and how we do it.

  586. with our wealth.

  587. God shows us

  588. not only how to fear Him

  589. by confronting

  590. our selfish use

  591. but then

  592. in verses 14

  593. through 19

  594. He shows us

  595. how to fear Him

  596. with an example

  597. of selfless

  598. sacrificial

  599. giving of wealth

  600. for the good

  601. of others.

  602. Interestingly

  603. in verse 14

  604. Nehemiah

  605. begins to talk

  606. about his own experience

  607. and his own role

  608. verse 14

  609. it talks about

  610. how he had been

  611. exalted

  612. to a position

  613. of governorship

  614. under

  615. under the law

  616. the larger

  617. rulership

  618. of the Persian Empire

  619. he had been given

  620. control over this area

  621. and he shares

  622. about his own experience

  623. and it might be easy

  624. to think

  625. well he's kind of

  626. tooting his own horn

  627. isn't he?

  628. He's

  629. he's looking pretty good

  630. in this

  631. isn't he?

  632. and often

  633. when we read

  634. the Bible

  635. we look

  636. at examples

  637. the best way

  638. to read it

  639. is to think

  640. how am I like them

  641. in their fallenness

  642. and their sinfulness

  643. sometimes we like

  644. to read the Bible

  645. looking for heroes

  646. that we can emulate

  647. but I think it's often

  648. better to read the Bible

  649. thinking

  650. how does this

  651. reveal my own sin

  652. and my own fallenness

  653. but every once in a while

  654. we actually do see

  655. a very clear example

  656. of this is good

  657. this is a pattern

  658. to follow

  659. this is a life

  660. to emulate

  661. and that's what we see here

  662. in God's wisdom

  663. as he confronted

  664. the people

  665. and as he recorded

  666. this for us

  667. he says

  668. not only am I going

  669. to rebuke

  670. when you're not

  671. doing it right

  672. but I'm going to show you

  673. what it could look like

  674. and the pattern

  675. is basically this

  676. Nehemiah was at the top

  677. of the food chain

  678. he had power

  679. and wealth

  680. unrivaled

  681. in the area

  682. he had this position

  683. and with that position

  684. came perks

  685. the governors

  686. what do they call it

  687. the allowance

  688. of the governor

  689. and yet

  690. Nehemiah chose

  691. not

  692. to take advantage

  693. of this perk

  694. why?

  695. well verse 15

  696. says that

  697. former governors

  698. and notice

  699. that this could have been

  700. some of the Jewish governors

  701. it's not clear

  702. which ones

  703. he's talking about

  704. but clearly

  705. others in this position

  706. had used it

  707. and abused it

  708. they laid a heavy burden

  709. on the people

  710. and their servants

  711. acted arrogantly

  712. it's so easy

  713. isn't it

  714. when we have those positions

  715. for these perks

  716. and these

  717. you know

  718. this is the diva culture

  719. in Hollywood right

  720. I want my Perrier

  721. to be 37 and a half degrees

  722. and if it's not that

  723. then

  724. you know

  725. it's so easy

  726. for us

  727. in places

  728. of position

  729. and power

  730. to abuse it

  731. and become

  732. very accustomed

  733. to incredible perks

  734. in ways

  735. that are very selfish

  736. Nehemiah looked at that

  737. and he said

  738. no I can't do that

  739. because not only

  740. was it

  741. abused in the past

  742. but you see it

  743. both in verse 16

  744. and in 18

  745. that it was costly

  746. for the people

  747. that those perks

  748. didn't come

  749. from nowhere

  750. they didn't come

  751. from the treasury

  752. of Persia

  753. they came

  754. from the taxes

  755. that were levied

  756. on the people

  757. in Jerusalem

  758. and in Judea

  759. his people

  760. God's people

  761. and he said

  762. I'm not going

  763. to do that

  764. and interestingly

  765. verse 16

  766. it talks about

  767. how he didn't

  768. even take land

  769. and I think

  770. if you piece this

  771. together

  772. part of what he's

  773. saying is

  774. I had the ability

  775. because of my

  776. place of power

  777. to really build

  778. my empire

  779. even personally

  780. to gain more wealth

  781. by having land

  782. right

  783. I could build

  784. my real estate empire

  785. and not only that

  786. but then I would

  787. build my empire

  788. of having servants

  789. to take care

  790. of all these lands

  791. but Nehemiah

  792. said we didn't

  793. take advantage

  794. of those perks

  795. either

  796. and one of the

  797. benefits of that

  798. was my servants

  799. were free

  800. to build the wall

  801. along with

  802. everyone else

  803. I didn't allow

  804. my investments

  805. or my possible

  806. investments

  807. to distract

  808. from God's plan

  809. of rebuilding

  810. this city

  811. for his glory

  812. that's what

  813. verse 16

  814. points to

  815. and instead

  816. of taking

  817. those perks

  818. Nehemiah said

  819. I took the cost

  820. myself

  821. verse 18

  822. sounds like

  823. quite a feast

  824. and when you

  825. multiply that out

  826. by days

  827. and weeks

  828. and 12

  829. years

  830. you realize

  831. Nehemiah was

  832. a very wealthy

  833. man

  834. it's a lot

  835. of oxen

  836. and yet

  837. he chose

  838. to spend

  839. his wealth

  840. to bless

  841. his people

  842. as the

  843. governor

  844. he had

  845. a responsibility

  846. for the

  847. household

  848. for the

  849. government

  850. for these

  851. 150

  852. who were

  853. a part

  854. of the

  855. government

  856. he had

  857. a responsibility

  858. to provide

  859. for them

  860. he did it

  861. himself

  862. as he

  863. was welcoming

  864. foreign dignitaries

  865. who came

  866. and visited

  867. he paid

  868. for them

  869. in the

  870. hospitality

  871. himself

  872. he said

  873. I will

  874. not do

  875. this

  876. at the

  877. cost

  878. of my

  879. own

  880. people

  881. who are

  882. already

  883. suffering

  884. but I

  885. will take

  886. the cost

  887. on myself

  888. so that

  889. I might

  890. please

  891. God

  892. interestingly

  893. did you

  894. notice

  895. how he

  896. said it

  897. in

  898. where is

  899. it

  900. I forgot

  901. to write

  902. it down

  903. I did

  904. this

  905. because

  906. I feared

  907. God

  908. such a

  909. strong

  910. example

  911. he confronted

  912. the leaders

  913. in the

  914. first half

  915. because they

  916. were not

  917. fearing

  918. God

  919. here

  920. he reveals

  921. his own

  922. heart

  923. I did

  924. this

  925. because

  926. I feared

  927. God

  928. I knew

  929. that my

  930. life was

  931. accountable

  932. to him

  933. I knew

  934. that this

  935. was his

  936. people

  937. and that

  938. I had a

  939. position

  940. to love

  941. them

  942. and to

  943. bless

  944. them

  945. with what

  946. he had

  947. given

  948. me

  949. and I

  950. chose

  951. to use

  952. it

  953. so what

  954. does this

  955. mean for

  956. us

  957. how do

  958. we tie

  959. this

  960. in to

  961. us

  962. today

  963. you know

  964. one of the

  965. things that's

  966. important to

  967. notice is

  968. that it

  969. could be

  970. very easy

  971. to think

  972. this passage

  973. is all

  974. for those

  975. of us

  976. who may

  977. have more

  978. and to

  979. give

  980. but notice

  981. that at the

  982. very beginning

  983. the context

  984. of this

  985. was that

  986. the poor

  987. Jews

  988. had committed

  989. Nick preached

  990. on this

  991. last week

  992. had committed

  993. and they

  994. left their

  995. fields to

  996. come into

  997. Jerusalem

  998. to build

  999. the wall

  1000. and to

  1001. do God's

  1002. work

  1003. and though

  1004. they didn't

  1005. have great

  1006. wealth

  1007. at cost

  1008. to

  1009. themselves

  1010. they gave

  1011. what they

  1012. could

  1013. which is

  1014. their time

  1015. and their

  1016. labor

  1017. and then

  1018. most of

  1019. this passage

  1020. then

  1021. confronts

  1022. others who

  1023. had more

  1024. and how

  1025. they could

  1026. use it

  1027. to bless

  1028. God

  1029. to fear

  1030. God

  1031. is to

  1032. use

  1033. our

  1034. wealth

  1035. to be

  1036. a blessing

  1037. to God's

  1038. people

  1039. out of

  1040. reverence

  1041. to God

  1042. you know

  1043. it's so

  1044. striking

  1045. the book

  1046. of Acts

  1047. this is

  1048. one of

  1049. those passages

  1050. that we

  1051. in our

  1052. capitalistic

  1053. west

  1054. don't always

  1055. know what

  1056. to do

  1057. with

  1058. Acts

  1059. chapter

  1060. four

  1061. the end

  1062. of it

  1063. I'm going

  1064. to read

  1065. it just

  1066. so you

  1067. can hear

  1068. what the

  1069. early church

  1070. looked like

  1071. now the

  1072. full number

  1073. of those

  1074. who believed

  1075. were of

  1076. one heart

  1077. and one

  1078. soul

  1079. and no

  1080. one said

  1081. that any

  1082. of the

  1083. things that

  1084. belonged to

  1085. him was

  1086. his own

  1087. but they

  1088. had everything

  1089. in common

  1090. and with

  1091. great power

  1092. the apostles

  1093. were giving

  1094. their testimony

  1095. to the

  1096. resurrection

  1097. of the

  1098. Lord

  1099. Jesus

  1100. and the

  1101. great grace

  1102. was upon

  1103. them all

  1104. there was

  1105. not a

  1106. needy

  1107. person

  1108. among

  1109. them

  1110. for

  1111. as

  1112. many

  1113. as

  1114. were

  1115. owners

  1116. of

  1117. lands

  1118. and

  1119. houses

  1120. sold

  1121. them

  1122. and

  1123. brought

  1124. the

  1125. proceeds

  1126. of what

  1127. was sold

  1128. and laid

  1129. it at

  1130. the

  1131. apostles

  1132. feet

  1133. and it

  1134. was

  1135. distributed

  1136. to each

  1137. as

  1138. any

  1139. had

  1140. need

  1141. thus

  1142. Joseph

  1143. who is

  1144. also

  1145. called

  1146. by the

  1147. apostles

  1148. Barnabas

  1149. which means

  1150. son of

  1151. encouragement

  1152. a Levite

  1153. a native

  1154. of Cyprus

  1155. sold a

  1156. field that

  1157. belonged to

  1158. him

  1159. and brought

  1160. the money

  1161. and laid

  1162. it at

  1163. the

  1164. apostles

  1165. feet

  1166. because

  1167. Jesus

  1168. was raised

  1169. from the

  1170. dead

  1171. because

  1172. this

  1173. great

  1174. grace

  1175. of the

  1176. forgiveness

  1177. of their

  1178. sins

  1179. of the

  1180. possibility

  1181. of new

  1182. life

  1183. of a

  1184. restoration

  1185. of a

  1186. relationship

  1187. with God

  1188. of an

  1189. eternity

  1190. as God's

  1191. people

  1192. because of

  1193. Jesus

  1194. they had

  1195. all of

  1196. those riches

  1197. and therefore

  1198. what they

  1199. had

  1200. they made

  1201. available

  1202. to be used

  1203. by God

  1204. to bless

  1205. his people

  1206. so that no

  1207. one was

  1208. in need

  1209. they flourished

  1210. in serving

  1211. God as they

  1212. sacrificially gave

  1213. to one another

  1214. and again

  1215. there's some nuance

  1216. to this

  1217. if you go back

  1218. and read that

  1219. 2 Corinthians 8

  1220. passage

  1221. recognize that

  1222. that the call

  1223. is not to give

  1224. what you don't

  1225. have but to give

  1226. what you do

  1227. have and to

  1228. have a ready

  1229. heart

  1230. not a full

  1231. bank account

  1232. God isn't

  1233. asking you

  1234. to do

  1235. what you

  1236. can't do

  1237. but he's

  1238. asking you

  1239. are you

  1240. willing to

  1241. do what

  1242. you can

  1243. do

  1244. to help

  1245. others

  1246. what might

  1247. this look

  1248. like

  1249. let me end

  1250. by giving

  1251. you some

  1252. examples

  1253. first of all

  1254. I just want

  1255. to say

  1256. because

  1257. this passage

  1258. in Nehemiah

  1259. talks about

  1260. leadership

  1261. and because

  1262. Billy Graham

  1263. in many ways

  1264. was such an

  1265. example

  1266. when Billy Graham

  1267. was starting out

  1268. his ministry

  1269. and he saw

  1270. the potential

  1271. for it to grow

1272. and for it to be

  1273. a big organization

1274. and for there to be

  1275. a lot of money

  1276. flowing through it

1277. he set up a board

  1278. of directors

  1279. he set himself

  1280. a salary

  1281. that he was not

  1282. in control of

  1283. and then

  1284. everything else

  1285. was not to him

  1286. but was given

  1287. to the ministry

  1288. to be used

  1289. for the ongoing

  1290. work

  1291. of proclaiming

  1292. Jesus

  1293. in the 20th

  1294. century

  1295. around the

  1296. world

  1297. many many

  1298. counter examples

  1299. could be given

  1300. in the last

  1301. 50 years

  1302. of American

  1303. evangelicalism

  1304. but praise

  1305. God

  1306. for this one

  1307. good example

  1308. and may we

  1309. continue to seek

  1310. leaders

  1311. who do such

  1312. things

  1313. may we

  1314. who are

  1315. leaders

  1316. in this

  1317. church

  1318. continue

  1319. to follow

  1320. that

  1321. example

  1322. what about

  1323. those of us

  1324. who aren't

  1325. leading things

  1326. how about

  1327. our everyday

  1328. lives

  1329. what does

  1330. it look

  1331. like

  1332. friends

  1333. I just

  1334. want you

  1335. to think

  1336. broadly

  1337. about

  1338. what kind

  1339. of wealth

  1340. do you

  1341. have

  1342. it's

  1343. very easy

  1344. to think

  1345. about that

  1346. in terms

  1347. of money

  1348. what's in

  1349. my pocket

  1350. what's in

  1351. my bank

  1352. account

  1353. but I want

  1354. you to think

  1355. of the wealth

  1356. of God

  1357. has given

  1358. you

  1359. some of

  1360. the ways

  1361. that I

  1362. have seen

  1363. this church

  1364. bless other

  1365. people

  1366. in the

  1367. family of

  1368. God

  1369. inviting

  1370. an individual

  1371. in need

  1372. to come

  1373. and live

  1374. for a day

  1375. for a week

  1376. for a month

  1377. for a year

  1378. sometimes not

  1379. just an

  1380. individual

  1381. sometimes a

  1382. family with

  1383. kids

  1384. squeezing them

  1385. into the

  1386. basement

  1387. throwing them

  1388. up on the

  1389. in the extra

  1390. bedrooms

  1391. in your

  1392. empty nest

  1393. I've seen

  1394. this happen

  1395. and it's

  1396. been an

  1397. incredible

  1398. testimony

  1399. I think

  1400. about those

  1401. of us

  1402. who have

  1403. cars

  1404. and vehicles

  1405. would you

  1406. consider

  1407. thinking about

  1408. who you

  1409. can give

  1410. your car

  1411. to

  1412. rather than

  1413. getting

  1414. the

  1415. measly

  1416. $800

  1417. the

  1418. dealership

  1419. will give

  1420. to you

  1421. in a

  1422. trade-in

  1423. would you

  1424. consider

  1425. giving it

  1426. to someone

  1427. who couldn't

  1428. afford it

  1429. otherwise

  1430. I know

  1431. I've seen

  1432. that happen

  1433. in this

  1434. church

  1435. I've seen

  1436. it happen

  1437. where you've

  1438. given your

  1439. vans to

  1440. Eli and

  1441. to a bunch

  1442. of youth

  1443. group leaders

  1444. to drive

  1445. to New

  1446. Hampshire

  1447. in the

  1448. snow

  1449. and usually

  1450. they've come

  1451. back in one

  1452. piece and

  1453. sometimes they

  1454. haven't

  1455. right

  1456. and yet

  1457. you

  1458. welcomed

  1459. that cost

  1460. and said

  1461. yes

  1462. I can

  1463. share

  1464. what I

  1465. have

  1466. for the

  1467. good

  1468. of others

  1469. many of

  1470. you

  1471. open

  1472. your

  1473. homes

  1474. week

  1475. in

  1476. week

  1477. out

  1478. to

  1479. host

  1480. small

  1481. groups

  1482. to

  1483. invite

  1484. God's

  1485. people

  1486. in

  1487. to

  1488. study

  1489. his

  1490. word

  1491. and

  1492. to

  1493. have

  1494. fellowship

  1495. together

  1496. many of

  1497. you

  1498. set

  1499. aside

  1500. in

  1501. your

  1502. budget

  1503. extra

  1504. what can

  1505. I cut

  1506. out

  1507. this

  1508. month

  1509. so that

  1510. I just

  1511. have money

  1512. to give

  1513. where there's

  1514. a need

  1515. that might

  1516. arise

  1517. it's a

  1518. beautiful

  1519. thing

  1520. I pray

  1521. and hope

  1522. that our

  1523. church

  1524. will continue

  1525. to excel

  1526. still more

  1527. in these

  1528. ways

  1529. and if

  1530. you're

  1531. someone

  1532. who

  1533. isn't

  1534. sure

  1535. what the

  1536. needs

  1537. are

  1538. maybe

  1539. you're

  1540. newer

  1541. to the

  1542. church

  1543. I want

  1544. to let

  1545. you know

  1546. we have

  1547. something

  1548. called

  1549. a

  1550. have

  1551. need

  1552. list

  1553. Michelle

  1554. in the

  1555. office

  1556. moderates

  1557. it

  1558. you can

  1559. let the

  1560. church

  1561. office

  1562. know

  1563. and they'd

  1564. be glad

  1565. to put

  1566. your email

  1567. address

  1568. onto it

  1569. and it

  1570. just means

  1571. when someone

  1572. has something

  1573. they don't

  1574. need

  1575. they can

  1576. put it

  1577. on the

  1578. have

  1579. need

  1580. list

  1581. say

  1582. hey

  1583. I have

  1584. a

  1585. washing

  1586. machine

  1587. does

  1588. anyone

  1589. need

  1590. it

  1591. and

  1592. similarly

  1593. if there's

  1594. a need

  1595. I need

  1596. a ride

  1597. to the

  1598. airport

  1599. or I

  1600. need

  1601. a bed

  1602. or

  1603. whatever

  1604. and we've

  1605. seen

  1606. over and

  1607. over and

  1608. over again

  1609. God take

  1610. care of

  1611. one another

  1612. in this

  1613. church

  1614. through these

  1615. things

  1616. now what we've

  1617. talked about

  1618. so far

  1619. is all

  1620. material

  1621. things

  1622. but there are

  1623. other kinds

  1624. of wealth

  1625. as well

  1626. some of you

  1627. are great

  1628. cooks

  1629. and have

  1630. blessed one

  1631. another

  1632. with meals

  1633. when a new

  1634. baby has

  1635. come

  1636. when you've

  1637. come home

  1638. from a

  1639. hospital

  1640. even

  1641. just

  1642. in the

  1643. midst

  1644. of a

  1645. crisis

  1646. you have

  1647. blessed

  1648. one another

  1649. with meals

  1650. again

  1651. if you're

  1652. not in

  1653. on that

  1654. let

  1655. Michelle

  1656. know

  1657. we can

  1658. put you

  1659. on the

  1660. list

  1661. so that

  1662. you can

  1663. do that

  1664. some

  1665. of you

  1666. have a

  1667. great

  1668. knowledge

  1669. of the

  1670. city

  1671. of New

  1672. Haven

  1673. and our

  1674. church

  1675. is full

  1676. of people

  1677. who come

  1678. in

  1679. and don't

  1680. know much

  1681. about the

  1682. city

  1683. don't know

  1684. how it

  1685. works

  1686. some of

  1687. you have

  1688. great

  1689. knowledge

  1690. to share

  1691. about

  1692. how to

  1693. find social

  1694. services

  1695. about

  1696. how to

  1697. buy a

  1698. house

  1699. about

  1700. where there

  1701. might be

  1702. shelters

  1703. or need

  1704. places

  1705. for people

  1706. in need

  1707. you have

  1708. knowledge

  1709. to share

  1710. which is a

  1711. great wealth

  1712. seek to

  1713. use it

  1714. some of

  1715. you are

  1716. professionals

  1717. and when

  1718. appropriate

  1719. and legal

  1720. I'll put

  1721. those

  1722. little

  1723. caveats

  1724. on there

  1725. when

  1726. appropriate

  1727. and legal

  1728. consider

  1729. making

  1730. your

  1731. professional

  1732. help

  1733. available

  1734. and I

  1735. know

  1736. that gets

  1737. tricky

  1738. sometimes

  1739. but

  1740. press

  1741. on

  1742. find a

  1743. way

  1744. to do

  1745. it

  1746. in a

  1747. way

  1748. that's

  1749. okay

  1750. it doesn't

  1751. mean you

  1752. all get

  1753. free

  1754. health

  1755. care

  1756. by

  1757. finding

  1758. the

  1759. doctors

  1760. in

  1761. the

  1762. church

  1763. but

  1764. consider

  1765. that

  1766. these

  1767. people

  1768. might

  1769. be

  1770. able

  1771. to

  1772. consult

  1773. with

  1774. you

  1775. might

  1776. be

  1777. able

  1778. to

  1779. help

  1780. you

  1781. think

  1782. through

  1783. hard

  1784. problems

  1785. whether

  1786. you're

  1787. a

  1788. doctor

  1789. a

  1790. lawyer

  1791. a

  1792. social

  1793. worker

  1794. whatever

  1795. and

  1796. you know

  1797. friends

  1798. in our

  1799. modern

  1800. world

  1801. one of

  1802. the

  1803. greatest

  1804. wealth

  1805. that we

  1806. have

  1807. is

  1808. time

  1809. it's

  1810. very

  1811. precious

  1812. to us

  1813. and we're

  1814. loath to

  1815. share it

  1816. with

  1817. others

  1818. maybe

  1819. you don't

  1820. have a

  1821. lot of

  1822. wealth

  1823. maybe

  1824. you don't

  1825. have a

  1826. lot of

  1827. professional

  1828. degrees

  1829. but maybe

  1830. you have

  1831. time

  1832. time

  1833. to share

  1834. with

  1835. others

  1836. time

  1837. to help

  1838. to visit

  1839. the

  1840. homebound

  1841. time

  1842. to

  1843. come

  1844. alongside

  1845. those

  1846. who

  1847. may

  1848. be

  1849. struggling

  1850. one of

  1851. the things

  1852. that I

  1853. want to

  1854. say

  1855. is that

  1856. in all

  1857. of these

  1858. examples

  1859. and in

  1860. all of

  1861. these

  1862. opportunities

  1863. there's

  1864. cost

  1865. and we

  1866. need to

  1867. be prepared

  1868. for that

  1869. when we

  1870. give to

  1871. other

  1872. people

  1873. it will

  1874. be

  1875. inconvenient

  1876. and

  1877. sometimes

  1878. we will

  1879. really

  1880. lose

  1881. things

  1882. and we

  1883. need to

  1884. be

  1885. prepared

  1886. that this

  1887. isn't a

  1888. quid pro quo

  1889. kind of

  1890. world

  1891. it's an

  1892. abundance

  1893. that springs

  1894. up from

  1895. the goodness

  1896. and the

  1897. wellspring

  1898. of God's

  1899. love for

  1900. us

  1901. who then

  1902. provides

  1903. for us

  1904. who then

  1905. cascades

  1906. to those

  1907. around us

  1908. and we

  1909. don't look

  1910. for it

  1911. to be

  1912. given

  1913. back to

  1914. us

  1915. by those

  1916. that we

  1917. give to

  1918. but we

  1919. look to

  1920. God

  1921. to give

  1922. to us

  1923. so that

  1924. we might

  1925. give to

  1926. others

  1927. God

  1928. calls us

  1929. to

  1930. something

  1931. greater

  1932. than

  1933. simply

  1934. hoarding

  1935. what

  1936. we

  1937. have

  1938. he

  1939. calls

  1940. us

  1941. to

  1942. give

  1943. it

  1944. and

  1945. friends

  1946. as we

  1947. finish

  1948. and as

  1949. we

  1950. close

  1951. one of

  1952. the

  1953. things

  1954. I

  1955. want

  1956. to

  1957. point

  1958. out

  1959. is

  1960. that

  1961. these

  1962. problems

  1963. came

  1964. not

  1965. before

  1966. God's

  1967. kingdom

  1968. advanced

  1969. not

  1970. before

  1971. they

  1972. began

  1973. the

  1974. building

  1975. of

  1976. the

  1977. work

  1978. but

  1979. it

  1980. happened

  1981. in

  1982. the

  1983. context

  1984. of

  1985. it

  1986. and

  1987. as

  1988. we

  1989. continue

  1990. here

  1991. at

  1992. Trinity

  1993. to

  1994. want

  1995. to

  1996. build

  1997. our

  1998. church

  1999. to

  2000. the

  2001. glory

  2002. of

  2003. God

  2004. as

  2005. we

  2006. do

  2007. this

  2008. work

  2009. of

  2010. wanting

  2011. to

  2012. be

  2013. a

  2014. place

  2015. where

  2016. Jesus

  2017. Christ

  2018. is

  2019. lifted

  2020. up

  2021. and

  2022. his

  2023. grace

  2024. overflows

  2025. to

  2026. our

  2027. neighbors

  2028. to

  2029. our

  2030. friends

  2031. to

  2032. our

  2033. family

  2034. to

  2035. our

  2036. city

  2037. and

  2038. to

  2039. our

  2040. world

  2041. we

  2042. need

  2043. to

  2044. be

  2045. prepared

  2046. that

  2047. these

  2048. challenges

  2049. will

  2050. come

  2051. and

  2052. our

  2053. hearts

  2054. will

  2055. be

  2056. tested

  2057. are

  2058. you

  2059. willing

  2060. to

  2061. give

  2062. when

  2063. it

  2064. hurts

  2065. we

  2066. need

  2067. to

  2068. be

  2069. ready

  2070. for

  2071. our

  2072. sin

  2073. to

  2074. be

  2075. exposed

  2076. for

  2077. the

  2078. places

  2079. where

  2080. we

  2081. have

  2082. just

  2083. assumed

  2084. that

  2085. the

  2086. world

  2087. works

  2088. in

  2089. a

  2090. right

  2091. way

  2092. and

  2093. that

  2094. gets

  2095. exposed

  2096. and

  2097. we

  2098. see

  2099. it

  2100. for

  2101. what

  2102. it

  2103. is

  2104. a

  2105. heart

  2106. that

  2107. doesn't

  2108. fear

  2109. God

  2110. we

  2111. need

  2112. to

  2113. be

  2114. prepared

  2115. for

  2116. our

  2117. selfishness

  2118. to

  2119. be

  2120. tried

  2121. and

  2122. for

  2123. God's

  2124. call

  2125. on us

  2126. to

  2127. have

  2128. a

  2129. cost

  2130. in

  2131. new

  2132. ways

  2133. as

  2134. we

  2135. continue

  2136. to

  2137. pursue

  2138. God's

  2139. God

  2140. friends

  2141. this is

  2142. a big

  2143. task

  2144. and

  2145. of

  2146. course

  2147. we

  2148. cannot

  2149. do

  2150. it

  2151. on

  2152. our

  2153. own

  2154. if

  2155. we

  2156. sought

  2157. to

  2158. be

  2159. more

  2160. generous

  2161. people

  2162. simply

  2163. on

  2164. our

  2165. own

  2166. power

  2167. we

  2168. would

  2169. at

  2170. best

  2171. become

  2172. very

  2173. proud

  2174. about

  2175. how

  2176. wonderfully

  2177. gracious

  2178. and

  2179. giving

  2180. we

  2181. are

  2182. and

  2183. how

  2184. terrible

  2185. that

  2186. would

  2187. be

  2188. but

  2189. the

  2190. way

  2191. that

  2192. we

  2193. do

  2194. this

  2195. is

  2196. that

  2197. we

  2198. look

  2199. at

  2200. our

  2201. Savior

  2202. we

  2203. look

  2204. at

  2205. Jesus

  2206. that

  2207. though

  2208. he

  2209. was

  2210. rich

  2211. though

  2212. he

  2213. sat

  2214. at

  2215. the

  2216. right

  2217. hand

  2218. of

  2219. God

  2220. for

  2221. all

  2222. eternity

  2223. though

  2224. he

  2225. is

  2226. the

  2227. second

  2228. person

  2229. of

  2230. the

  2231. triune

  2232. eternal

  2233. God

  2234. by

  2235. whom

  2236. all

  2237. things

  2238. were

  2239. created

  2240. and

  2241. for

  2242. whom

  2243. all

  2244. things

  2245. were

  2246. created

  2247. though

  2248. he

  2249. was

  2250. rich

  2251. and

  2252. all

  2253. of

  2254. that

  2255. wealth

  2256. of

  2257. position

  2258. and

  2259. power

  2260. and

  2261. though

  2262. everything

  2263. he

  2264. has

  2265. belongs

  2266. to

  2267. him

  2268. he

  2269. became

  2270. poor

  2271. for

  2272. us

  2273. he

  2274. humbled

  2275. himself

  2276. and

  2277. took

  2278. on

  2279. flesh

  2280. and

  2281. blood

  2282. and

  2283. he

  2284. for

  2285. for

  2286. for

  2287. for

  2288. for

  2289. the

  2290. prerogatives

  2291. of

  2292. that

  2293. position

  2294. so

  2295. that

  2296. he

  2297. might

  2298. come

  2299. and

  2300. be

  2301. a

  2302. servant

  2303. and

  2304. not

  2305. only

  2306. a

  2307. servant

  2308. but

  2309. a

  2310. slave

  2311. and

  2312. not

  2313. only

  2314. a

  2315. slave

  2316. but

  2317. a

  2318. sacrifice

  2319. he

  2320. went

  2321. to

  2322. the

  2323. cross

  2324. to

  2325. die

  2326. for

  2327. us

  2328. to

  2329. redeem

  2330. us

  2331. from

  2332. our

  2333. selfish

  2334. hearts

  2335. and

  2336. our

  2337. love

  2338. of

  2339. everything

  2340. but

  2341. God

  2342. in

  2343. the

  2344. world

  2345. to

  2346. redeem

  2347. for

  2348. himself

  2349. a

  2350. people

  2351. who

  2352. would

  2353. fear

  2354. him

  2355. and

  2356. show

  2357. it

  2358. and

  2359. how

  2360. they

  2361. use

  2362. all

  2363. that

  2364. they

  2365. have

  2366. because

  2367. of

  2368. the

  2369. great

  2370. abundance

  2371. that

  2372. he

  2373. has

  2374. shown

  2375. us

  2376. in

  2377. Christ

  2378. and

  2379. this

  2380. leads

  2381. us

  2382. then

  2383. to

  2384. the

  2385. table

  2386. as

  2387. we

  2388. continue

  2389. our

  2390. service

  2391. we're

  2392. going

  2393. to

  2394. celebrate

  2395. the

  2396. Lord's

  2397. Supper

  2398. and

  2399. what

  2400. we do

  2401. here

  2402. this

  2403. is

  2404. the

  2405. table

  2406. of

  2407. God's

  2408. abundance

  2409. this

  2410. is

  2411. the

  2412. table

  2413. of

  2414. God's

  2415. great

  2416. provision

  2417. for

  2418. us

  2419. that

  2420. he

  2421. has

  2422. given

  2423. us

  2424. the

  2425. life

  2426. of

  2427. his

  2428. very

  2429. own

  2430. son

  2431. so

  2432. that

  2433. the

  2434. grace

  2435. that

  2436. we

  2437. receive

  2438. in

  2439. him

  2440. by

  2441. when

  2442. you

  2443. you

  2444. into

  2445. the
