  1. Turn there with me.

  2. Our passage today is a summary of the whole Old Testament in one chapter.

  3. So if you're new to the Bible, maybe this will be a helpful chapter for you.

  4. But this text is also a prayer.

  5. It is a prayer to God for mercy.

  6. So let's pray, and then I'll read the text for us.

  7. Amen.

  8. God, what a wonderful thought it is that you are everlasting

  9. and that your glory will outlast and outstrip and exceed

  10. any of the fame that we see in this life.

  11. God, what our hearts are really hungry for is an intimate word from you,

  12. our Creator and our Redeemer.

  13. So as we draw near to you and your word in this moment,

  14. would you speak, God, through your Holy Spirit by your word

  15. and help us to see Jesus in fresh ways, Father, we pray.

  16. In his name, amen.

  17. Nehemiah chapter 9.

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  18. Now, on the 24th day of this month, the people of Israel were assembled with fasting

  19. and in sackcloth and with earth on their heads.

  20. And the Israelites separated themselves from all foreigners and stood and confessed their sins

  21. and their iniquities of their fathers.

  22. And they stood up in their place and read from the book of the law of the Lord their God

  23. for a quarter of the day.

  24. For another quarter of it, they made confession and worshiped the Lord their God.

  25. On the stairs of the Levites stood Jeshua, Bonnie, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Buni,

  26. Sherabiah, Bonnie, and Chanani.

  27. And they cried out with a loud voice to the Lord their God.

  28. Then the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bonnie, Hashbaniah,

  29. Sherabiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pathahiah said,

  30. stand up and bless the Lord your God from everlasting to everlasting.

  31. Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

  32. You are the Lord.

  33. You alone.

  34. You have made heaven, heaven of heavens with all their host,

  35. the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them,

  36. and you preserve all of them.

  37. And the host of heaven worships you.

  38. You are the Lord, the God who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans

  39. and gave him the name Abraham.

  40. You found his heart faithful before you and made with him the covenant

  41. to give to his offspring the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite,

  42. the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite.

  43. And you have kept your promise, for you are righteous.

  44. And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt

  45. and heard their cry at the Red Sea

  46. and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants

  47. and all the people of his land,

  48. for you knew that they acted arrogantly against our fathers.

  49. And you made a name for yourself, as it is to this day.

  50. And you divided the sea before them

  51. so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land,

  52. and you cast their pursuers into the depths as a stone into mighty waters.

  53. By a pillar of cloud you led them in the day,

  54. and by a pillar of fire in the night,

  55. to light for them the way in which they should go.

  56. You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven

  57. and gave them right rules and true laws,

  58. good statutes and commandments.

  59. And you made known to them your holy Sabbath

  60. and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law

  61. by Moses your servant.

  62. You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger

  63. and brought water for them out of the rock for their thirst.

  64. And you told them to go in,

  65. to possess the land that you had sworn to give them.

  66. But they and our fathers acted presumptuously

  67. and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments.

  68. They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders

  69. that you had performed among them.

  70. But they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader

  71. to return to their slavery in Egypt.

  72. But you are a God ready to forgive,

  73. gracious and merciful,

  74. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love,

  75. and did not forsake them.

  76. Even when they had made for themselves a golden calf and said,

  77. this is your God who brought you up out of Egypt

  78. and had committed great blasphemies,

  79. you and your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness.

  80. The pillar of cloud to lead them in the way

  81. did not depart from them by day,

  82. nor the pillar of fire by night

  83. to light for them the way by which they should go.

  84. You gave your good spirit to instruct them

  85. and did not withhold your manna from their mouth

  86. and gave them water for their thirst.

  87. Forty years you sustained them in the wilderness

  88. and they lacked nothing.

  89. Their clothes did not wear out

  90. and their feet did not swell.

  91. And you gave them kingdoms and peoples

  92. and allotted to them every corner.

  93. So they took possession of the land of Sihon,

  94. king of Heshbon,

  95. and the land of Og, king of Bashan.

  96. You multiplied their children as the stars of heaven

  97. and you brought them into the land

  98. that you had told their fathers to enter and possess.

  99. So the descendants went in and possessed the land.

  100. And you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land,

  101. the Canaanites,

  102. and gave them into their hand

  103. with their kings and the peoples of the land

  104. that they might do with them as they would.

  105. And they captured fortified cities and a rich land

  106. and took possession of houses full of all good things,

  107. cisterns already hewn, vineyards,

  108. olive orchards, and fruit trees in abundance.

  109. So they ate and were filled

  110. and became fat and delighted themselves

  111. in your great goodness.

  112. Nevertheless, they were disobedient

  113. and rebelled against you

  114. and cast your law behind their back

  115. and killed your prophets who had warned them

  116. in order to turn them back to you.

  117. And they committed great blasphemies.

  118. Therefore, you gave them into the hand of their enemies

  119. who made them suffer.

  120. And in the time of their suffering,

  121. they cried out to you,

  122. and you heard them from heaven.

  123. And according to your great mercies,

  124. you gave them saviors

  125. who saved them from the hand of their enemies.

  126. But after they had rest,

  127. they did evil again before you,

  128. and you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies

  129. so that they had dominion over them.

  130. Yet when they turned and cried to you,

  131. you heard from heaven,

  132. and many times you delivered them

  133. according to your mercies.

  134. And you warned them

  135. in order to turn them back to your law.

  136. Yet they acted presumptuously

  137. and did not obey your commandments,

  138. but sinned against your rules,

  139. which if a person does them,

  140. he shall live by them.

  141. And they turned a stubborn shoulder

  142. and stiffened their neck

  143. and would not obey.

  144. Many years you bore with them

  145. and warned them by your spirit

  146. through your prophets,

  147. yet they would not give ear.

  148. Therefore, you gave them into the hand

  149. of the peoples of the lands.

  150. Nevertheless, in your great mercies,

  151. you did not make an end of them

  152. or forsake them,

  153. for you are a gracious and merciful God.

  154. Now, therefore, our God,

  155. the great, the mighty, and the awesome God

  156. who keeps covenant and steadfast love,

  157. let not all the hardships seem little to you

  158. that has come upon us,

  159. upon our kings, our princes, our priests,

  160. our prophets, our fathers, and all your people

  161. since the time of the kings of Assyria

  162. until this day.

  163. Yet you have been righteous

  164. in all that has come upon us,

  165. for you have dealt faithfully

  166. and we have acted wickedly.

  167. Our kings, our princes, our priests,

  168. and our fathers have not kept your law

  169. or paid attention to your commandments

  170. and your warnings that you gave them,

  171. even in their own kingdom

  172. and amid your great goodness that you gave them

  173. and in the large and rich land

  174. that you set before them,

  175. they did not serve you

  176. or turn from their wicked works.

  177. Behold, we are slaves this day.

  178. In the land that you gave to our fathers

  179. to enjoy its fruits and its good gifts,

  180. behold, we are slaves.

  181. And its rich yield goes to the kings

  182. whom you have set over us

  183. because of our sins.

  184. They rule over our bodies

  185. and over our livestock as they please,

  186. and we are in great distress.

  187. Because of all this,

  188. we make a firm covenant in writing

  189. on the sealed document

  190. are the names of our princes,

  191. our Levites, and our priests.

  192. We are in great distress.

  193. Now, on the one hand,

  194. it's a bit surprising

  195. that the people in Nehemiah chapter 9

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  196. would describe themselves this way,

  197. great distress.

  198. After all, as we've seen this summer,

  199. God has been at work pretty powerfully

  200. during this period in Israel's history.

  201. After all, aren't these the very people

  202. who can remember how God,

  203. just a generation before,

  204. moved the heart of the Persian king

  205. to bring them home from exile

  206. around 539 B.C.?

  207. Aren't these the very people

  208. who can remember how not so long ago

  209. God empowered them to overcome opposition

  210. and rebuild the temple in 516?

  211. And aren't these the very people

  212. who just a month ago,

  213. in the sixth month of 445 B.C.,

  214. didn't they just see God

  215. bring them together

  216. and complete the massive rebuilding project

  217. of rebuilding Jerusalem's walls?

  218. That sounds like a pretty inspiring

  219. string of events.

  220. You would think that they are

  221. flying high spiritually.

  222. And yet here in Nehemiah 9,

  223. as the people are gathered

  224. on the 24th day of the seventh month,

  225. having just completed celebrating

  226. the Feast of Booths

  227. for the first time

  228. since the days of Joshua,

  229. here they are,

  230. calling out to God,

  231. saying that they are in great distress.

  232. The key is verse 36.

  233. Although the people are indeed

  234. in the land

  235. that God had promised to Abraham,

  236. yet they are still slaves.

  237. A foreign king rules over them,

  238. verse 37 says,

  239. over their bodies

  240. and over their livestock

  241. all as they please.

  242. On the one hand,

  243. the people are free.

  244. They are back home

  245. in the land of promise

  246. and yet at the same time

  247. they are not free.

  248. They are slaves,

  249. servants of a foreign king.

  250. On the one hand,

  251. God's promises

  252. are already fulfilled.

  253. Here we are,

  254. we're back in the land

  255. and yet at the same time

  256. they're not fulfilled.

  257. They're still in bondage.

  258. Now we have to appreciate

  259. how disconcerting

  260. that reality would have been

  261. for the Israelites

  262. in Nehemiah's day,

  263. not just politically

  264. but spiritually.

  265. After all,

  266. what is the basic story

  267. of the Old Testament?

  268. It's this,

  269. God frees his people

  270. from slavery

  271. and then he puts them

  272. in the land of promise.

  273. That's sort of the basic arc.

  274. Out of slavery

  275. and into their true home.

  276. And now,

  277. the people are back

  278. in the land of promise.

  279. God brought them

  280. back from exile.

  281. They're back in the land

  282. but paradoxically,

  283. they are still slaves.

  284. They are free

  285. and yet not free.

  286. They are home

  287. and yet not home.

  288. And perhaps you've begun

  289. to feel that this

  290. spiritual experience

  291. isn't just limited

  292. to the people

  293. in Nehemiah's day.

  294. Isn't that true

  295. of us today as well?

  296. On the one hand,

  297. living this side

  298. of the New Testament,

  299. we see so many

  300. of God's promises fulfilled.

  301. The Messiah has come.

  302. The Spirit has been poured out.

  303. The nations are coming

  304. into the people of God.

  305. The new creation has begun

  306. and yet at the same time,

  307. there's still suffering

  308. and death

  309. and decay

  310. and injustice.

  311. And that can cause

  312. great distress.

  313. We are living

  314. in the tension

  315. between the already

  316. and the not yet.

  317. Already,

  318. God's kingdom

  319. has come in Christ.

  320. Not yet

  321. is God's kingdom

  322. fully complete.

  323. We can feel like

  324. we're free

  325. and yet not free.

  326. Home and yet not home.

  327. And that often puts us

  328. in a place

  329. of great distress.

  330. distress.

  331. But the biggest challenge

  332. of all,

  333. the source of

  334. their greatest distress

  335. and our greatest distress

  336. today,

  337. the source of our

  338. greatest distress,

  339. even living on this side

  340. of the New Testament,

  341. is it not this?

  342. That in Christ,

  343. our sins have been forgiven

  344. and yet

  345. we still sin.

  346. We've been liberated

  347. from spiritual slavery

  348. and yet so often

  349. we return to our chains.

  350. We've been given

  351. an internal inheritance.

  352. We've been made

  353. a new creation

  354. and yet we so often

  355. live as if we belong

  356. to the old.

  357. All of our sins

  358. have been forgiven

  359. and yet

  360. we still sin.

  361. does that not cause

  362. great distress

  363. in our hearts?

  364. For some of us

  365. it causes doubt.

  366. For some of us

  367. discouragement.

  368. For some of us

  369. fear.

  370. For some of us

  371. loneliness

  372. and isolation,

  373. confusion.

  374. What are we to do?

  375. Where are we to go?

  376. Well,

  377. Nehemiah chapter 9

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  378. points the way.

  379. You see,

  380. this prayer in Nehemiah 9

  381. is more than just

  382. a recitation

  383. of Old Testament history.

  384. Although it is

  385. a beautiful retelling

  386. of the whole biblical story

  387. up to this point,

  388. it's more than that.

  389. It's a humble prayer

  390. to the God of mercy.

  391. In our great distress,

  392. we must remember

  393. the inexhaustible

  394. mercy of God.

  395. So for a few moments

  396. this morning,

  397. I want to look

  398. at the mercy of God

  399. displayed in this prayer.

  400. And then once we have

  401. God's mercy fully

  402. in our sights,

  403. we're going to apply it

  404. to ourselves

  405. and to our neighbors

  406. and to our world.

  407. But first,

  408. let's look at the prayer itself.

  409. Now,

  410. there are lots of ways

  411. we could approach

  412. this lengthy prayer

  413. in chapter 9,

  414. but I think the simplest way

  415. is to just take it

  416. in four broad movements.

  417. And that fourth

  418. and last movement

  419. is what we've already

  420. been looking at,

  421. verses 32 through 37.

  422. The people of Nehemiah's day

  423. after the exile

  424. calling out to God

  425. in the land

  426. in their great distress,

  427. confessing their sin.

  428. But the first three movements

  429. walk us through

  430. the reasons why

  431. we can call out to God

  432. in the first place.

  433. Why should we?

  434. Why can we go to God

  435. in our great distress?

  436. And the first movement

  437. of the prayer

  438. in verses 6 through 8

  439. tells us this.

  440. In your great distress,

  441. remember that your Creator

  442. is a merciful God.

  443. Now, in these verses,

  444. we don't see God's mercy

  445. explicitly referenced.

  446. Compared to verses 16 through 21,

  447. where God's mercy

  448. is a major theme,

  449. or compared to verses 26 through 31,

  450. where God's mercy

  451. is referenced

  452. in nearly every verse,

  453. this opening movement

  454. of the prayer

  455. seems a bit quiet

  456. on the theme

  457. of God's mercy.

  458. However, that doesn't mean

  459. that this opening movement

  460. of the prayer

  461. is just an introduction.

  462. After all,

  463. consider everything

  464. that transpires

  465. in the biblical story

  466. between verses 6 and 7

  467. of our prayer here

  468. in chapter 9.

  469. In other words,

  470. consider all that happens

  471. between the creation

  472. of all things

  473. in Genesis 1 and 2

  474. and the covenant

  475. with Abraham

  476. in Genesis 12.

  477. What happens?

  478. The fall of Adam and Eve,

  479. the murder of Abel

  480. by his brother Cain,

  481. the worldwide judgment

  482. of the flood,

  483. the building

  484. of the Tower of Babel.

  485. What does God,

  486. our Creator,

  487. do in the face

  488. of humanity's

  489. constant rebellion

  490. against his goodness?

  491. Well,

  492. he makes a covenant

  493. with Abraham.

  494. Now, a covenant

  495. is a binding promise,

  496. and God binds himself

  497. to Abraham

  498. and Abraham's family,

  499. promising to give them

  500. a place to dwell

  501. and to bless them

  502. in order that the effects

  503. of curse and sin

  504. might be overcome.

  505. That's what God promised

  506. Abraham from the very beginning,

  507. that in Abraham

  508. and in his offspring,

  509. all the world

  510. would one day be blessed.

  511. So this story

  512. of creation and covenant

  513. in verses 6 through 8

  514. is really a story

  515. of God's mercy.

  516. When the world stood

  517. under the curse of sin,

  518. God made a covenant

  519. to bring blessing.

  520. Notice how verse 8 ends.

  521. And you've kept

  522. your promise

  523. for you are righteous.

  524. The people in Nehemiah's day

  525. were indeed living

  526. in the land.

  527. God kept his promise.

  528. And did that not mean

  529. that God would also

  530. keep his promise

  531. to be merciful to them,

  532. to forgive their sin,

  533. to liberate them

  534. once for all?

  535. Indeed, if this is the God

  536. who created heaven

  537. with all their hosts,

  538. the earth and all that is in it,

  539. the seas and all that is in them,

  540. if this is the God

  541. who not just creates

  542. but preserves

  543. every living thing

  544. every second of every day,

  545. if that is who God is,

  546. how could he not

  547. keep his promise?

  548. What would stop such a God

  549. from keeping his promise?

  550. And if this God promises

  551. to be merciful,

  552. then indeed he will show mercy.

  553. So our creator

  554. is a merciful God.

  555. But the prayer goes on.

  556. In verses 9 through 21,

  557. we find the second movement

  558. of the prayer.

  559. And in the second movement,

  560. we find this.

  561. It tells us,

  562. in your distress,

  563. remember that your Redeemer

  564. is a merciful God.

  565. Remember that your Redeemer

  566. is a merciful God.

  567. These verses retell

  568. the story of the Exodus

  569. when God liberated,

  570. when he redeemed his people

  571. from slavery in Egypt.

  572. And after liberating them,

  573. he led them with a cloud and fire.

  574. He gave them his law at Sinai,

  575. even fed them with bread and water

  576. in the wilderness.

  577. God sees our affliction.

  578. He sympathizes with our slavery

  579. and he rescues us.

  580. Our creator is our Redeemer.

  581. But in verse 16,

  582. we see that the people

  583. acted presumptuously,

  584. stiffened their necks,

  585. and would not obey.

  586. They even had the audacity

  587. when God had just told them

  588. for their own good

  589. not to make idols,

  590. that is carvings of false gods,

  591. and worship them.

  592. When God had just told them

  593. not to do that,

  594. they had the presumption

  595. to make a metal calf statue

  596. and say,

  597. here's the Lord

  598. who brought you out of Egypt.

  599. Behold your God, Israel.

  600. And what does God do?

  601. Does he leave them

  602. to wander in the wilderness alone?

  603. Does he revoke his law?

  604. Does he allow them to starve?

  605. No.

  606. No.

  607. Verse 19,

  608. you in your great mercies

  609. did not forsake them

  610. in the wilderness.

  611. The cloud and the fire remained.

  612. God even imparted his spirit

  613. to instruct them in the law.

  614. The manna continued to appear

  615. morning after morning

  616. because our Redeemer

  617. is a merciful God.

  618. And how could he not be

  619. at this point?

  620. Having redeemed his people,

  621. you see,

  622. God's name, as it were,

  623. was on this people now.

  624. They were the Lord's people.

  625. And how was he going

  626. to forsake them?

  627. How could he allow his name

  628. to be dishonored in that way?

  629. He had bound himself

  630. to this people

  631. to be their God,

  632. to be their Redeemer.

  633. In other words,

  634. his own reputation

  635. was at stake now

  636. with his people.

  637. He didn't just look

  638. at their affliction

  639. and have sympathy on them.

  640. He bound himself to them

  641. and said,

  642. this is my people now.

  643. So all the nations

  644. looking on would not just

  645. see what happened

  646. to that people,

  647. but would see what

  648. this God was like.

  649. God's own reputation

  650. was at stake now

  651. with his people

  652. in the world.

  653. And if that was true,

  654. how could God forsake them?

  655. How would his mercy

  656. not remain on them?

  657. Our Redeemer

  658. is a merciful God.

  659. But the prayer goes on.

  660. In verses 22 through 31,

  661. we find the third movement

  662. of the prayer.

  663. And as it walks through

  664. Israel's history,

  665. it tells us this.

  666. It says,

  667. in your distress,

  668. remember that your glorifier

  669. is a merciful God.

  670. Now these verses tell the story

  671. of how God gave Israel

  672. the land of Canaan

  673. and how he made good

  674. on all of his promises

  675. to fight for them

  676. and give them a home,

  677. to make them a numerous people,

  678. as numerous as the stars of heaven,

  679. and how he filled them

  680. with good things.

  681. You see,

  682. God not only creates us

  683. and redeems us,

  684. but he also glorifies us.

  685. That is,

  686. he brings all of his promises

  687. to completion,

  688. to consummation.

  689. He is our goal

  690. and our end

  691. and our delight.

  692. God saves us

  693. to bring us somewhere

  694. and he brings us there

  695. to glory.

  696. But in verse 26,

  697. we see that although God

  698. had given the people

  699. everything,

  700. they still rebelled.

  701. So throughout what's called

  702. the period of the judges,

  703. a downward spiral takes place

  704. in Israel's history.

  705. The people would begin

  706. serving other gods,

  707. the Lord would give them

  708. over to their enemies,

  709. the people would cry out

  710. to the Lord,

  711. and then the Lord

  712. would send a judge

  713. or a savior,

  714. as verse 27 puts it,

  715. and the people would be

  716. liberated for a while.

  717. But then the same thing

  718. would happen all over again.

  719. They would go back

  720. to other gods

  721. and experience defeat

  722. and cry out for help

  723. and another rescuer would come

  724. and it would keep going

  725. and going on and on.

  726. The downward spiral went.

  727. And when Israel

  728. eventually became a monarchy

  729. under Saul

  730. and then ultimately

  731. under King David,

  732. it seemed like maybe

  733. things would be different

  734. at that point.

  735. It seemed like maybe

  736. God would be able

  737. to get them out

  738. of the downward spiral

  739. and yet as the generations

  740. of kings went on,

  741. the kings proved

  742. just as fickle

  743. as the people.

  744. Until eventually

  745. God ultimately gave them

  746. up to the Assyrians

  747. and then the Babylonians

  748. to be ejected

  749. from the land,

  750. to be sent out

  751. into exile.

  752. And it seemed like

  753. that might be

  754. the end of the story.

  755. Had God simply

  756. had enough,

  757. was God done

  758. once and for all

  759. with his rebellious people?

  760. No.

  761. Look at verse 31.

  762. Nevertheless,

  763. in your great mercies,

  764. you did not make

  765. an end of them

  766. or forsake them,

  767. for you are a gracious

  768. and merciful God.

  769. Our creator

  770. and redeemer

  771. and glorifier

  772. is a merciful God.

  773. A remnant survived

  774. the exile

  775. and eventually

  776. God brought them home.

  777. And that's the story

  778. of Ezra and Nehemiah,

  779. right,

  780. that we've been looking at.

  781. And you see,

  782. it's on the basis

  783. of this history,

  784. this history

  785. of inexhaustible mercy

  786. that the people

  787. in Nehemiah's day,

  788. knowing their own sin

  789. and sensing

  790. their own slavery

  791. and feeling the dislocation

  792. of being in between

  793. the already

  794. and the not yet,

  795. it's on the basis

  796. of that history

  797. that they call out

  798. to God

  799. and ask for mercy.

  800. And friends,

  801. it's on the basis

  802. of that same history

  803. that you and I

  804. can call out to God

  805. for mercy as well.

  806. It means we can be honest

  807. with our sins

  808. and our failings.

  809. We don't have to try

  810. to hide them

  811. or cover them up.

  812. Don't try to excuse them

  813. or pass them off

  814. or stuff them down.

  815. After all,

  816. God is an almighty.

  817. God is the almighty creator.

  818. There's no use hiding

  819. from a God like that.

  820. He keeps your DNA running.

  821. I'm pretty sure

  822. you can't keep your secrets

  823. from Him.

  824. But God's also

  825. the almighty redeemer

  826. who loves you

  827. and longs to receive you

  828. and enters into your pain

  829. and your suffering.

  830. You don't have to keep secrets

  831. from a God like that.

  832. You can be confident

  833. to go to a God like that

  834. and ask for mercy

  835. because He knows you.

  836. And what's more,

  837. God is your glorifier.

  838. He has a plan for you

  839. and He has a future for you.

  840. A plan and a future

  841. that actually no sin

  842. and no shame

  843. can stand in the way of.

  844. But perhaps this morning

  845. your sins seem too great.

  846. Perhaps you know

  847. what it's like

  848. like the people

  849. at the beginning

  850. of this chapter

  851. to maybe you're not

  852. literally throwing dirt

  853. on your head

  854. and tearing your clothes

  855. because your heart

  856. is so broken

  857. but maybe at a spiritual

  858. or existential level

  859. you can feel that.

  860. Perhaps doubt

  861. and great distress

  862. still haunt you.

  863. Could God still love me?

  864. Could God still receive me?

  865. Have I not sinned

  866. too greatly?

  867. Have I not acted

  868. too presumptuously?

  869. Have I not actually

  870. stiffened my neck?

  871. Have I not refused

  872. to obey even when

  873. I knew better?

  874. How could God

  875. be merciful to me?

  876. You know,

  877. we've been looking back

  878. over the story

  879. of the Old Testament

  880. but for a moment

  881. look ahead.

  882. Look at what

  883. the New Testament holds

  884. and what do you see there?

  885. The almighty creator

  886. takes flesh

  887. and becomes a creature

  888. weak and in a manger.

  889. The compassionate redeemer,

  890. the one who rescues

  891. from slavery

  892. with a strong arm

  893. takes the form

  894. of a servant.

  895. The glorifier,

  896. the one who lives

  897. in perfect beauty

  898. and goodness

  899. is put to shame.

  900. Why?

  901. Why would such a great,

  902. mighty,

  903. and awesome God,

  904. as our chapter says,

  905. why would that God

  906. do such a thing?

  907. Why would Jesus

  908. come and suffer

  909. and die?

  910. It's mercy.

  911. It's mercy for you,

  912. friend.

  913. He was forsaken

  914. so that you

  915. would never have to be.

  916. No matter how great

  917. your sins,

  918. there's mercy for you

  919. in the arms of Christ.

  920. So how should we apply

  921. this great prayer

  922. of Nehemiah 9?

  923. First,

  924. to ourselves.

  925. And the key word here

  926. is peace.

  927. For all who are in Christ,

  928. the mercy of God

  929. covers all your sins,

  930. past,

  931. present,

  932. and future.

  933. So confess your sins

  934. to God.

  935. Go to Him

  936. in sorrow

  937. and repentance.

  938. Cry out to Him

  939. for mercy

  940. and you will find it.

  941. And let the words

  942. of God's mercy

  943. bring your heart peace.

  944. And you know,

  945. this is the sort of peace

  946. that doesn't give you

  947. a license

  948. to sort of do

  949. whatever you want.

  950. This is the sort of peace

  951. that causes you

  952. to sin less and less.

  953. Let me use a somewhat

  954. simple illustration.

  955. When I go to the grocery store

  956. hungry,

  957. what do I usually

  958. come home with?

  959. What do you usually

  960. come home with?

  961. I'll tell you

  962. what I come home with.

  963. Ice cream.

  964. Those New England

  965. barbecue chips

  966. that are so crunchy

  967. and delicious.

  968. Some form of baked good

  969. that probably has

  970. a high fat content.

  971. Oreos.

  972. Do you know they make

  973. mega stuffed Oreos now?

  974. I think when you open up

  975. the package

  976. it's just white stuff.

  977. There's not even

  978. a cracker in there.

  979. That's what happens

  980. when I go

  981. to the grocery store

  982. hungry

  983. and all that food

  984. ends up in my cart

  985. because my stomach

  986. is growling

  987. and it all looks

  988. so good.

  989. But what about

  990. when I go to the grocery store

  991. after I've already

  992. had a satisfying meal?

  993. Well,

  994. I usually come home

  995. with what's on my list.

  996. Do you see

  997. the spiritual truth here?

  998. When your heart

  999. is full

  1000. of the peace

  1001. and mercy

  1002. of Christ,

  1003. when you're able

  1004. to look back

  1005. and recite

  1006. the mercy of God

  1007. not just through

  1008. biblical history

1009. but on into your own history

  1010. and to the history

  1011. of those around you,

  1012. when your heart

  1013. is full of that

  1014. mercy and peace

  1015. and when you have

  1016. fellowship with God

  1017. your creator

  1018. and redeemer

  1019. and glorifier

  1020. and you know

1021. that he looks upon you

  1022. not with condemnation

  1023. but with favor,

  1024. when your heart

  1025. is full

  1026. with that satisfying

  1027. peace of forgiveness,

  1028. then your heart

  1029. doesn't need

  1030. the junk food anymore.

  1031. Now,

  1032. if that peace

  1033. seems elusive to you,

  1034. find an older,

  1035. more mature believer

  1036. or come talk

1037. to one of the pastors

  1038. or elders

1039. or maybe your small group leader

  1040. and open your heart

  1041. to them.

1042. That can be a very

  1043. vulnerable thing to do

1044. but in that safe place

  1045. of a trusted brother

  1046. or sister,

  1047. open your heart

  1048. to them

  1049. because sometimes

  1050. we need the word

  1051. of mercy

1052. to come from the outside

  1053. so we can really

  1054. get down deep

  1055. on the inside.

  1056. That's the beauty

  1057. of confessing

  1058. your sins

  1059. to one another

  1060. in the spiritual family

  1061. of the church.

  1062. Open up your heart

  1063. to another trusted friend

  1064. but that's often

  1065. the way

  1066. to experience

  1067. this mercy

  1068. and peace

  1069. in a fresh way,

  1070. the peace

  1071. that satisfies you.

  1072. second,

  1073. let's apply this mercy

  1074. to our neighbors.

  1075. If the word

  1076. to ourselves

  1077. was peace,

  1078. the word

  1079. toward our neighbors

  1080. is patience.

  1081. When we know

  1082. God has been merciful

  1083. to us,

  1084. when we've experienced

  1085. that over time,

  1086. we become much

  1087. more patient

  1088. towards others.

  1089. not perfectly,

  1090. but gradually.

  1091. Because let's be honest,

  1092. people sometimes

  1093. annoy us.

  1094. People sometimes

  1095. disappoint us.

  1096. People sometimes

  1097. hurt us.

  1098. And we wonder,

  1099. how long

  1100. do we really

  1101. have to put up

  1102. with them?

  1103. But in those moments,

  1104. it's good to pause

  1105. and consider

  1106. how long

  1107. God has put up

  1108. with us.

1109. How many of your sins

  1110. has God overlooked?

1111. How many of your failures

  1112. has He patiently endured?

  1113. How often

1114. has He taken you back

  1115. again and again

  1116. with no contempt

  1117. and no conditions

  1118. but with gentleness

  1119. and love?

  1120. Now,

  1121. this isn't saying

1122. we don't need to have

  1123. good boundaries

  1124. at times with people,

1125. but those who know mercy

  1126. become patient people.

  1127. Patient because God

  1128. has been so mercifully

  1129. patient with us.

  1130. But last,

  1131. this mercy applies

  1132. in our relationship

  1133. to the world.

  1134. Peace,

  1135. patience,

  1136. but the word here

  1137. when we look out

  1138. at the world

  1139. is hope.

  1140. You know,

1141. it's easy to look out

  1142. at the world

  1143. and get pretty discouraged.

  1144. Things like poverty

  1145. and racism

  1146. and violence

  1147. and corruption,

1148. they never seem to end.

  1149. And the longer

  1150. you care about

  1151. these things

  1152. as we should

  1153. as followers of Christ,

  1154. you know,

  1155. the longer you care

  1156. about these things,

1157. the harder it can be

  1158. because so often

  1159. good plans for change

  1160. don't often bring

  1161. change about.

  1162. But a people

1163. in touch with God's mercy

  1164. will always have hope.

  1165. Why?

  1166. Because hope,

  1167. you see,

  1168. is something much

  1169. different than a wish.

  1170. You wish for something,

1171. but you hope in someone.

1172. Do you see the difference?

1173. We often wish for something,

  1174. but hope,

  1175. real hope,

  1176. is hoping in someone.

  1177. Now, wishes aren't bad.

  1178. It's good to have

  1179. and good to desire

  1180. specific,

  1181. concrete changes

1182. that we'd like to see.

1183. It's good to work for them

  1184. and long for them.

  1185. But the reality is,

  1186. friends,

  1187. in a fallen world,

  1188. often these wishes

  1189. will not materialize.

  1190. But hope is different.

  1191. Even when things

1192. don't go as we planned,

  1193. hope in God

  1194. grows.

  1195. We may not know

  1196. how or when

  1197. God will come

1198. and make all things new.

  1199. We don't know

  1200. when His kingdom

  1201. will break forth

  1202. and give us signs

  1203. of the coming day.

  1204. But we know

  1205. that it will.

  1206. How do we know?

  1207. Because our Creator

  1208. and our Redeemer

  1209. and our Glorifier,

  1210. the Lord Jesus,

1211. is a God of mercy.

1212. He will bring to completion

1213. the good work He began.

  1214. Justice will roll down

  1215. like waters

  1216. and righteousness

  1217. will come

  1218. like an ever-flowing stream

1219. and that kind of hope

  1220. will sustain us

  1221. even when our wishes

  1222. don't materialize

  1223. the way we want.

1224. The people who know mercy,

  1225. in other words,

  1226. are a hopeful people.

  1227. So peace

  1228. and patience

  1229. and hope.

  1230. It is possible

1231. even in our great distress

  1232. to know these things,

  1233. to know peace

  1234. and patience

  1235. and hope.

  1236. Why?

  1237. Because our God

  1238. is a merciful God.

  1239. And the more

  1240. you know this God,

1241. the more you'll be able

1242. to say with the psalmist,

  1243. surely goodness

  1244. and mercy

  1245. shall follow me

1246. all the days of my life

  1247. and I shall dwell

1248. in the house of the Lord

  1249. forever.

  1250. Let's pray.

  1251. Why don't we take

  1252. just a moment

1253. and ask the Holy Spirit

  1254. to come

  1255. and show us

  1256. in our hearts

  1257. where we need

  1258. in particular

  1259. to feel

  1260. and to experience

  1261. God's mercy?

  1262. Perhaps it's sins

1263. that you've been wrestling with,

  1264. something in your past,

  1265. something even

  1266. in your present.

  1267. Perhaps it's a relationship

  1268. that's been bringing out

  1269. the worst in you.

  1270. Perhaps it's a weariness

  1271. because your labors

  1272. in the world

  1273. seem to be bearing

  1274. so little fruit.

  1275. Lord Jesus,

  1276. we praise you

1277. that you are a God

  1278. of mercy.

  1279. would you

  1280. equip us

  1281. and encourage us

  1282. this week

  1283. to go forth

  1284. from this place

  1285. to really live

  1286. into and press

  1287. into that mercy

  1288. in a way perhaps

  1289. that we've never

  1290. done before.

  1291. You must do

  1292. this work,

  1293. God.

  1294. You must do it

  1295. by your Spirit

1296. so we look to you.

  1297. We yield to you,

  1298. God,

1299. and ask you to come.

1300. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1301. Amen.

  1302. Well, church,

  1303. let's stand.
